BATAVIA – Anger over the city’s investment in the downstate Prairie State Energy Campus sparked a Batavia businessman to file a class-action lawsuit in August.

Batavia businessman Joe Marconi, who died earlier this month, filed the suit in Kane County Circuit Court.

“We filed it because the electric rates in this town are so high,” Marconi said at the time. “Our main objective is to get Batavia out of the contract they signed with Prairie State.”

Named in the lawsuit are Indiana Municipal Power Agency; IMPA Service Corp., the consulting division of Indiana Municipal Power Agency hired by the city of Batavia to study the Prairie State Energy Campus project; Raj Rao, president and chief executive officer of IMPA Service Corp. and chairman of the Prairie State Generating Company Management Committee; Chicago-based consulting company Sargent and Lun-

Last year’s winter marked by snow, record cold A winter season that saw stretches of record cold and dozens of inches of snow brought school closings and difficult driving conditions.

The Kane County Sheriff’s Office spokesman warned several times that drivers would be taking a significant risk if they braved roads covered by snow, with drifts piled higher than cars. Municipalities ran short on salt.

The cold conditions extended well into the spring.

More than an inch of snow fell on April 14, bringing the Chicago official snowfall to 82 inches, making it the third snowiest season on record.

Temperature figures left their mark, as well. According to Kane and DuPage county information posted at Weather Underground website’s, www.wunderground. com, there were 14 days featuring lows below zero in January. Seven of those days established record low

Two more days of below-zero cold were recorded in March, both of them records, and there were seven record lows reached in that month. There also were two more days of record lows in April.

The cold really started in November and December 2013, when – according to figures posted at Weather Underground – five record lows were established in November. In December 2013, there were seven days in which lows below zero were recorded, four of them records.

After one of the many significant snow events, in February, a National Weather Service meteorologist described the season’s weather pattern – snowy weather, followed by low temperatures.

The cities of Batavia, Geneva and Rochelle are named respondents in the suit. In 2005, the Northern Illinois Municipal Power Agency, of which Batavia is a member, agreed to a long-term power contract to buy electricity from Prairie State.

Geneva and Rochelle are other members. Batavia aldermen in March voted, 113, to approve an electric rate hike to address the electric utility’s increased purchase power costs and the need for additional revenues. The hike raises electric rates in 2014 and 2015 in combination with a half-cent increase to the city’s home-rule sales tax.

St. Charles Park District to offer outdoor skating

WHAT: The district needs three consecutive days of weather at 15 degrees or lower to begin freezing these outdoor rinks. Then this cold must be followed by at least five days of weather below 32 degrees before ice can be used.

County morgue problems continuing into new year GENEVA – The problems with the morgue at the Kane County Coroner’s Office will be continuing into the new year.

The morgue has been closed since June, when mold was found in and around the cooler and refrigerator area. Since then, Kane County Coroner Rob Russell has been outsourcing forensic operations to DuPage County.

Rob Russell Russell recently told the Kane County Board’s Judicial and Public Safety Committee the morgue will not be able to reopen as hoped on Jan. 1 because the earliest delivery date for the freezer and refrigerator is Jan. 6.

Now, he said, the goal is to reopen the facility by Jan.

15. The cost of outsourcing operations to DuPage County has contributed to the coroner’s office going over budget, officials have said.

Russell has said it can cost $5,000 to $7,000 a month, depending on the activity level.

County officials later determined that the black mold around the cooler and refrigerator area was not toxic. Russell has said he didn’t know whether the mold was toxic when it was discovered. Even though it’s not, he said, the allergenic substance still needs to be remediated.

The morgue has had a history of problems. Last year, a broken compressor in the morgue freezer at the Kane County Coroners building caused two bodies stored there to decompose and leak over the Thanksgiving holiday.

Celebrity wedding creates stir at Hotel Baker ST. CHARLES – During the afternoon of Aug. 29, celebrities Jenny McCarthy and Donnie Wahlberg were spotted entering the Hotel Baker in St. Charles. At the time, news reports were suggesting they were supposed to have been in New York for their wedding.

By the afternoon of Aug. 30, word was spreading that the wedding was, in fact, taking place during the Labor Day weekend in St. Charles. And crowds started to gather in front of the hotel on Route 64.

McCarthy previously was a co-host on the ABC-TV show “The View,” as well as a model and actress. Wahlberg was in the music group New Kids on the Block and also is a prominent actor.

Throughout the weekend, people were finding reasons to visit downtown St. Charles.

Some were standing across the street from Hotel Baker, aiming their cameras at the scene.

The outside dining area at Zaza’s Italian Steakhouse, which sits across the street from the hotel, was full.

Those who gathered spoke of celebrity sightings throughout the weekend. Some said they could see McCarthy at the

Kane County elects Don Kramer as new sheriff For the first time in eight years, Kane County elected a new sheriff – retired lieutenant Don Kramer.

The Geneva resident secured the Republican nomination for sheriff in March in a neck-and-neck race against Kane County Lt. Kevin Williams. In November, Kramer went on to defeat Democrat Willie Mayes Sr., a Kane County deputy sergeant.

“To those of you who have worked so hard – knocking on doors, passing out literature, calling friends, visiting neighbors and supporting our fundraisers – I can’t thank you enough,” Kramer said in his victory speech.

“You’re the team.”

In one of his first acts as sheriff, Kramer appointed Deputy Lt. Thomas Bumgarner, who supported his campaign, as his chief deputy or second in command – a position formerly known as the undersheriff.

The following week, in his first report to County Board members, Kramer briefly outlined some organizational changes he made, such as having lieutenants scheduled on all three shifts.

He also named James Lewis as his acting director of corrections.

Lewis previously served as administrative lieutenant.

Geneva man charged with murder of wife The July 6 discovery of a woman on some railroad tracks became Geneva’s first homicide since 1975, according to Geneva police.

Shadwick King, 47, was indicted on two counts of first-degree murder in the July 6 death of his wife, Kathleen, 32.

Her cause of death was ruled to be asphyxiation, said Greg Sams, a Kane County Assistant State’s Att o r n e y , Shadwick King d u r i n g King’s July 11 bond hearing.

King is accused of killing his wife and then p l a c i n g Kathleen King her body on Union Pacific railroad tracks less than a half-mile from their Geneva home.

King first was questioned about his wife’s death on the evening of July 6, then re-interviewed and taken into custody on July 8, Sams said.

He has remained in the Kane County Jail since then, on a $1.5 million bond, according to online records.

Evidence and information related to the case has continued to emerge from nearly six months of court hearings and related documents. Attorneys in the case have subpoenaed items such as Kings’ cellphone records, Union Pacific Railroad video, police reports and more.

King’s trial originally was scheduled to begin Dec. 8, but was assigned a new date of Feb. 2 because of ongoing state crime lab testing, according to court records.

King’s case is next due in court on Jan. 7.

It auctioned recently for $13,743 at Neal Auction Co. in New Orleans.

Each piece is elaborately decorated, and each lid is topped by a pheasant finial. My aunt said she bought the set, which she thought was sterling, from an antiques dealer. The hallmark on the bottom is a circle surrounding the words “Meriden B Company.” Also inside the circle is an image of a balance scale between two stars. Who is the maker, and what is the set worth?

A: Meriden Britannia Co. was organized in 1852 in Meriden, Connecticut, by brothers Horace (18241890) and Dennis (1828-1886) Wilcox and several other partners.

Although its first products were made of Britannia metal (pewter), the company was making silverplated hollowware by 1855. Your silver-plated (not sterling) set probably dates from the 1860s or ‘70s. In excellent condition, it could sell for over $1,000.

*** Q: I have a plastic clown bank in its original box. It must be at least 25 years old. The clown is 11 1/2 inches tall and is wearing a red-and-white polka-dot cloth shirt, yellow pants and orange shoes and hat. When you put a coin in his right hand and lift his left arm, the coin falls into his mouth. The box reads, “The more coins he eats, the bigger his belly gets.” It’s marked “J.S.N.Y.” How much is it worth?

A: The initials stand for “Jeffrey Snyder New York,” a company that made and imported giftware, housewares and toys. It was founded in New York in 1975, but its products were made in several Asian countries. It was part of Etna Products Co., a New York firm founded in 1945. The clown bank shows up online for about $15 without the box and for $30 with the original box. *** Q: I have two souvenir paper needle books in fairly decent shape with all the needles still inside. One is from the 1939 New York World’s Fair and pictures the Trylon and Perisphere. The other needle book reads “Ambassador of Good Will” on one

side and pictures flags from several countries. It says “Lone Eagle” on the other side and pictures a plane flying over the globe, a ship and a train. Are they worth anything?

A: “The Lone Eagle” was a nickname for Charles Lindbergh, who flew a goodwill tour of Latin America in 1927 and 1928. Vintage needle books usually sell for $5 to $10.

The sound of chimes ringing 12 times at midnight blends with the “10, 9, 8 ...” chant that ushers in the new year on Jan. 1. Today we may watch the year change on a television screen, but in years past the celebration was timed by a chiming grandfather clock. Even earlier, New Year’s were timed by a clock in the church steeple or the city hall tower.

Before that, time was judged by daylight and darkness, and summer and winter climates. Today the cell phone is always handy to let you know exactly what time it is. The grandfather clock was originally known as a tall case, longcase or floor clock. The 6- to 8-foot-tall clock has a weightdriven pendulum. It was invented in 1670 or so. In the early 20th century, it was the most accurate timepiece available. There are two types: the expensive eight-day clock that has to be wound once a week, and the lessexpensive 30-hour clock that has to be wound once a day. An unusually large 1880 carved mahogany clock, 107 inches high and made by J.J. Elliott of London, sold in September 2014 at Neal Auction Co. in New Orleans. The clock has elaborate carving, fretwork, rosewood panels with inlay, chimes, and a brass-andsilvered dial. It brought $13,743. To tell the accurate time for New Year’s Eve, it must be placed in a room with a high ceiling (over 9 feet) and leveled. *** Q: My four-piece bedroom suite includes a headboard, dresser, chest

of drawers and nightstand. Each piece is marked with a triangle, a large letter “K” and “Korn Industries, Incorporated, Sumter Cabinet Company.” It’s solid oak and in excellent condition. What price could I ask for this set?

A: Sumter Cabinet Co. was a division of Korn Industries. Chester Korn started a timber company and sawmill in Cincinnati in 1889 to make buggy parts and other wood products. The company moved to Sumter, S.C., in 1921. Bedroom furniture was first made in the 1930s and dining room furniture in 1989.

The company was sold in 2000 to Chromecraft Revington, which continued to use the Sumter brand name until late 2006. The price of used bedroom furniture depends on style, quality, condition and age.

It probably can only be sold locally, because shipping is expensive. It should be priced as a bargain, about half the cost of a new set. *** Q: How much is a bottle of Dom Perignon vintage champagne worth? I have a 1995 bottle, 750 ml, in its original box.

A: An unopened bottle of Dom Perignon vintage 1995 in its box is worth about $175 to $200. Empty, the bottle could sell for about $12 and the box for less than $10. Remember that in some states, you need a special license to sell bottled alcohol. *** Q: Every time I used to visit my aunt, she asked me to polish her fancy silver tea-and-coffee service.

In March, Kane County Sheriff’s deputies and Kane County Animal Control officials responded to a report that animals in a traveling zoo were being mistreated.

Stacy Fiebelkorn, an Elgin resident, was charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty and neglect in connection with the 94 animals in her Mini Zoo Crew, including 11 animals and a fetus that were found dead.

Surviving animals were found sick and starving and in need of not only food and water, but medical attention, officials said. Most of the animals were on a farm in Hampshire Township, but a dead mare and fetus were found in Maple Park.

Fiebelkorn’s animals in-

cluded horses, mini-horses and donkeys, alpacas, llamas, goats, chickens and rabbits.

The animals were impounded, and a group of volunteers moved them from the Hampshire farm to other locations for care and treatment.

Although she initially fought to get her animals returned, Fiebelkorn eventually agreed to give them up.

Volunteers took over the animals’ feeding and care.

Though some died or were euthanized because of their condition, eventually all survivors were adopted out to new homes.

Fiebelkorn’s attorney has sought a plea deal with prosecutors. Her next court appearance is scheduled for Monday.

Bloomington man dies in Fox River drowning GENEVA – A 26-year-old Bloomington man who rode in a two-person kayak April 19 on the Fox River died after he went over a dam near State Street, the Kane County Coroner’s office said.

Dinesh Sudhakar-Uckoo’s preliminary cause of death was drowning, according to the coroner’s office. Sudhakar-Uckoo became caught in the boil in front of the dam, Geneva fire officials said.

The other man in the kayak was thrown out of the boil and rescued by two bystanders and responding Geneva firefighters, according to the Geneva Fire Department. Investigators said the men in the kayak were from a group of six friends from the Bloomington area who had rented three kayaks for a trip on

the river. The last fatality at the Geneva dam was Aug. 5, 2011, when Randy Suchy, 57, of Bolingbrook drowned after he jumped into the Fox River to save a 12-year-old boy near the dam. Sudhakar-Uckoo’s drowning in the Fox River renewed concerns about eliminating low head dams in the area in Geneva and Batavia, which also has a dam in its downtown area.

“How many deaths does it take ... to spur on action to do something about these dams?” said Ryan Rushton, owner of the Geneva Kayak Center.

The center moved in 2010 from a location in Geneva near the dam to Yorkville, which replaced its dams with whitewater rapids after several fatalities.

Animal Control leader resigns amid investigation After being named Kane County Animal Control interim administrator late last year, Robert Sauceda abruptly resigned in May. A statement issued by the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office offered little insight to the reasons why – it simply stated the resignation’s e f f e c t i v e Robert date – but it Sauceda did happen amid a personnel investigation.

Sauceda submitted his resignation hours after a County Board committee meeting that included closed-session discussion, in which the county’s human resources executive director, health department executive director and state’s attorney were present.

After the meeting, Coun-

ty Board Chairman Chris Lauzen said the board would take action on the personnel matter the next week.

Sauceda – whose tenure included the removal of almost 100 sick and starved animals from a petting zoo – didn’t comment on the situation.

Health department staff assumed Sauceda’s duties until Brett Youngsteadt began as administrator Sept.

2. His appointment was unanimous.

County Board members have had nothing but praise for Youngsteadt, who has provided updates about his first days as administrator to the Public Health Committee.

He has said his goals include launching a volunteer program, changing the agency’s Web address to something easier to remember and updating Animal Control’s mission statement.

In November, Kane County Clerk Jack Cunningham pleaded guilty to violating the county’s ethics ordinance by using county-related computer equipment to conduct prohibited political activities, a misdemeanor. He paid the maximum fine, $500 and $45 in court costs.

The charge arose in March when a deputy clerk, Jeff Ward of Geneva, who was working on Cunningham’s primary campaign for the Republican nomination, used his county email account to send corrected campaign financial information to the Illinois State Board of Elections.

Ward first was suspended without pay for five days, then later res i g n e d a n d Jack received more Cunningham than $11,000 in a separation agreement with Cunningham.

State election law and the county’s own ethics ordinance do not allow the use of taxpayer-supported materials for political purposes, officials said.

Ward was not charged because the law did not apply to him as an employee of an elected county official. Cunningham’s opponent in the primary, Kane County Board member Mark Davoust, R-St. Charles, reported the ethics breach.

“I am grateful that our ethics ordinance has received some vindication,” Davoust said after Cunningham’s guilty plea.

“This went through the system, and a conclusion was reached that this was not ethical behavior. It had its day in court, and we got a decision.”

Cunningham apologized and said he has taken steps to separate his work as the county clerk from his re-election efforts and Republican Party work.

“I’m not perfect,” Cunningham said. “I have a separate mobile campaign office now – a Winnebago RV being set up with wireless email, equipped with a printer, Wi-Fi and only my email, cunningham.john@ aol.com.”

Friday responded to a chimney fire at Suncast, at 701 N. Kirk Road in Batavia.

No damage was done to the structure or interior of the building, the release states. According to its website, Suncast designs, develops and manufactures “stylish products with prac-

tical features for the whole home.” It lists products for the patio and yard, home and garden, sheds and storage, and snow tools, among other items.

Brad enjoyed every minute of his life. He loved his family and they enjoyed getting together at home and in many beautiful parts of the world. GENEVA – Police continue to investigate the circumstances behind the death of Geneva resident John Gaines, who was found dead Friday afternoon in a creek at Geneva Golf Club.

The Kane County Coroner’s Office on Monday conducted an autopsy on Gaines, 74, the husband of Geneva Chamber of Commerce President Jean Gaines. Toxicology samples were sent to the forensic laboratory for analysis, according to a news release from the Kane County Coroner’s Office.

“The Kane County Coroner’s Office is cooperating with all police and fire agencies in their ongoing investigation of the incident,” the Kane County Coroner’s Office stated in the release.

John Gaines Geneva police previously stated, in a news release, that nothing indicated foul play or criminal activity was involved, but police “will continue to investigate the circumstances of this case until a cause of death has been determined by the Kane County Coroner’s Office.”

“Clearly something happened very quickly,” said John Gaines’ daughter, Kristine Holtz, on Monday.

ST. CHARLES – A Malta man has been charged with drunken driving and other traffic offenses after he caused accidents in Batavia and St. Charles last weekend, police said Monday.

Frederick A. Harbecke was driving a full-sized Chevrolet van in the northbound inside lane of Randall Road in Batavia about 1:40 p . m . S a t u r - Frederick day when he A. Harbecke rear-ended a 2001 Ford Escape that was stopped in traffic at Fabyan Parkway, Batavia Detective Kevin Bretz said.

The Ford’s driver got out and approached Harbecke, who “looked out of it,” Bretz said.

He said Harbecke then

backed up, pulled into the outside lane and took off north.

In St. Charles, the van hit multiple vehicles on Randall Road between Route 64 and Red Haw Lane, where it came to a rest after hitting a tree and going into an embankment, St. Charles Police Department spokesperson Lisa Blackwell said.

Harbecke, the sole occupant, was taken to the hospital, she said, noting he was released into police custody Sunday morning.

Harbecke, 40, of the 200 block of North Third Street, was charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and failure to give aid and/or information in Batavia, Bretz said.

He was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless driving, driving without insurance and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident in St. Charles, Blackwell said.

International Criminal Court on shaky ground THE WASHINGTON POST A dozen years after its creation, the International Criminal Court is foundering.

So far it has brought just 21 cases in eight countries, all of them in Africa. Only two have resulted in convictions – of relatively obscure Congolese rebel leaders. Although 139 countries signed the founding treaty, the United States, Russia, China, India, Israel and every Arab nation but Jordan have declined to join. The most horrific crimes against humanity perpetrated in the world in the past decade – in North Korea, Syria and Sri Lanka, among other places – remain outside the ICC’s reach.

Worse, in two big cases the court bet that it could bring current heads of national gov-

ernments to trial – and lost.

This month the court’s chief prosecutor was forced to abandon a case against Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, who had been charged with orchestrating a 2007 campaign of ethnic violence.

Although Kenya is a member of the court, the government refused to cooperate with the prosecution, making it impossible to gather sufficient evidence.

That embarrassment is matched by the court’s failed 2008 indictment of Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity.

An ICC warrant for Bashir’s arrest was issued in 2009, but not only does he remain president of Sudan but he also has traveled to Egypt and Qatar with impunity. A week

after the Kenya decision, the ICC prosecutor suspended evidence-gathering in the Darfur region where the crimes occurred.

The court’s purpose was to prevent the world’s worst war and human rights crimes from going unpunished, both for the sake of justice and to deter future atrocities. But the guilty escaped sanction, and the court’s deterrence effect is looking weak. Even Congo’s warring factions continue to commit horrific crimes.

The record suggests the court lacks the clout to pursue cases in places where regimes remain in place and conflicts are unresolved.

Its jurisdiction began only in 2002, so it cannot pursue crimes committed long ago.

What remains to be seen is

whether it could be more successful in helping to prosecute offenses after wars end and political transitions are completed.

An international settlement on Syria following the departure of the Assad regime, for example, could and should include a referral of crimes to the ICC. Pending such opportunities, the court may be tempted to pursue more quixotic initiatives. This month chief prosecutor Fatou Bensouda reported that she was “assessing available information” on “enhanced interrogation techniques” by U.S. forces in Afghanistan, which is an ICC member. This month’s Senate Intelligence Committee report on cases of torture may increase the impetus behind that probe. But the alleged

crimes committed by U.S. personnel, although shocking, are not grave enough to meet the ICC’s high bar for prosecution – and it would be politically foolish for the court to pursue U.S. targets.

Similarly, Bensouda will be put on the spot if the Palestinian Authority elects to accede to the ICC treaty and bring charges against Israel for its actions in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

In that case, the court would be theoretically obligated to simultaneously investigate crimes by Hamas and other Palestinian groups, but might find it practically – as well as politically – easier to zero in on Israel.

That, too, would be an error that could destroy the ICC’s chances of gaining international credibility.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR THE VIOLENCE IS REAL To the Editor: I wonder how many people remember all the movies that have taught the lesson about living a life of lawlessness usually leading to prison or an early grave? The news has become an almost endless litany of people dying in the streets. Sometimes these deaths are at the hands of duly sworn police officers. I believe some people should learn the lesson that living the life of a thug is not a role in Hollywood, and the violence is real and irreversible in a lot of cases. Being a member of a racial minority and/or financially disadvantaged is not, nor has ever been, an excuse to break the law.

For the most part, our police and courts do an outstanding job and should not be second-guessed. Without them, anarchy would be the law of the land.

Editor’s note: 2014 offered heaping doses of glory and heartbreak on the local sports scene, with both of those descriptors especially resonant during a wild September for the Kane County Cougars. Here is a look at 10 of the most impactful stories from the local sports scene in 2014:

The Ramblers were dominant in Peoria, completing their title run with a 63-47 win against Heyworth.

1. Cubs cut ties with Cougars, who then link up with D-Backs Less than a week after winning the Midwest League championship, the mood around the Kane County Cougars’ front office darkened considerably.

The Cubs announced Sept.

18 that they were bolting Kane County to partner with South Bend (Indiana) as their new Midwest League affiliate.

The move came after only two years of a Cubs-Cougars partnership that many anticipated would be a long-term arrangement.

With few options to choose from, the Cougars responded by inking a two-year player development agreement to become an Arizona Diamondbacks affiliate. Arizona becomes the Cougars’ sixth parent team in franchise history, joining the Orioles, Marlins, Athletics, Royals and Cubs.

2. Cougars win Midwest League championship Most of 2014 was far rosier for the Cougars, who enjoyed the best season in franchise history, capped by winning the 2014 Midwest League championship.

ball team had a roster unlike any other in the state, and the Red Ramblers capitalized on it by winning the IHSA Class 1A state championship in March for the first boys basketball state title in school history.

The Batavia football team didn’t win another state championship in 2014 but the Bulldogs enjoyed the next best thing – another win over archrival Geneva to cement a fourth straight Upstate Eight Conference River title.

The Bulldogs’ defense took center stage in the season’s most-anticipated showdown, collecting five interceptions to help host Batavia hold off Geneva, 26-20, in the secondto-last game of the regular season.

A measure of revenge for Geneva arrived in the playoffs, when the Vikings advanced to the Class 7A quarterfinals, while the Bulldogs – who drew a difficult first-round assignment in Mt. Carmel – were ousted in the first round.

7. Fox Valley marathon winner Charles Wysong struggles at finish line The first marathon Indiana man Charles Wysong ever attempted was a mixture of misery and euphoria.

Wysong won the St. Charlesbased Fox Valley Marathon in September, but the 26-year-old was unable to celebrate immediately afterward, requiring medical attention for dehydration.

“I rebounded pretty fast,” said Wysong, who finished in 2:44.58. “I was on the edge. If I would have been just a little more dehydrated, it would have been bad.”

8. St. Francis girls volleyball three-peats in Class 3A Even by St. Francis girls

The Spartans won their third straight IHSA Class 3A girls volleyball state championship in November, defeating Joliet Catholic, 25-18, 25-23, at Redbird Arena for the title.

Longtime Spartans coach Peg Kopec claimed her 11th state championship for St. Francis.

Charles and took great pride in the annual St. Charles Men’s Tournament each summer at Pottawatomie, where he worked for more than three decades.

BOYS BASKETBALL: EAST AURORA HOLIDAY TOURNAMENT – NEUQUA VALLEY 62, GENEVA 58

Vikings falter late in loss to Wildcats

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com AURORA – The Geneva boys basketball team’s first loss of the season to St. Charles East stung in the conference race and when it comes to Tri-Cities bragging rights.

None of those factors were in play in the Vikings’ second defeat – a 62-58 loss to Neuqua Valley on Monday at the East Aurora Holiday Tournament – but Geneva senior forward Nate Navigato wasn’t about to brush it off.

Recurring sore spots for the Vikings resurfaced against Neuqua, and the Vikings’ top player is beginning to bristle.

“I’m pretty ticked off about this one, too,” Navigato said.

“I think it’s the same reasons we lost to East. Defensively, we’ve got to get better, and the turnovers need to stop. We’re not going to win any sectional or regional like this. We’ve just got to get better than this.”

Unlike the St. Charles East loss, Geneva (9-2) was in great position early in the fourth quarter on Monday, leading the Wildcats, 47-39, after a pair of Navigato free throws.

But suspect perimeter defense by the Vikings and

turnovers leading directly to Neuqua points allowed the Wildcats (12-1) to play their way into tonight’s championship game against East Aurora. Geneva will settle for a spot in the third place game against Wheaton Academy, which fell to the host Tomcats in the nightcap, 61-47.

“We looked tired in the fourth quarter,” Geneva coach Phil Ralston said. “We looked like we were uncertain of what we needed to do, collectively as a team, and I think that’s part of why it gets away from us.

We lost to a better team. They played as a team down the stretch and we couldn’t seem to be able to execute anything down the stretch.”

Speedy Neuqua point guard Demond George was a major pest at both ends. He scored 11 of his 18 points during the fourth quarter and hit all six of his free throws in the quarter to seal the win.

The Vikings had the ball out of a timeout with 39 seconds left, down 56-55, and naturally drew up a play for Navigato (game-high 29 points), who was in the midst of one of his best games of the season.

But the Buffalo recruit’s look on a jumper wasn’t as clean as

most of his others on the night, and poor floor balance by Geneva allowed the Wildcats to convert the rebound into a Connor Raridon layup for a 5855 lead with 28 seconds left.

“I came off [a screen], and at first when I caught it I didn’t see anybody, but I thought I could have gotten maybe a better shot maybe if I kind of pump faked, created space a little bit more,” Navigato said.

“That’s my fault. I should have gotten open better. It was a tough shot. I still should have made it.”

Navigato and George then traded free throws to bring the score to 60-57. After a pair of timeouts, Neuqua fouled Geneva guard Sean Chambers to prevent a potential game-tying 3 with 4.7 seconds left. Chambers made the first but the Vikings were called for a lane violation on his second try, and George hit two more free throws for the final margin.

While the Vikings squandered a fourth quarter lead, their first half performance also loomed large. The Vikings trailed, 25-22, at halftime after committing 12 of their 19 turnovers for the night during the opening half against the ball-hawking George and his

Neuqua teammates.

“That was the emphasis of the game,” George said.

“Coach told me to get after the point guard, make them throw some errant passes. I anticipate all the time, so just try to pick up some steals, and then in the half court also not give them any easy lobs.”

Geneva big man Loudon Vollbrecht scored 16 points and Chambers contributed seven rebounds to go with his five points.

While the Vikings anticipate senior guard Pace Temple’s return from injury in January will help them troubleshoot their ball-handling woes, the Vikings – who have high expectations coming off a breakthrough 2013-14 season – hold themselves to high standards, and expect to play sharper basketball.

“The shame of it is we won’t be playing for a championship [tonight],” Ralston said. “The nice thing about it is maybe our guys learn and become a better basketball team because of it. Sometimes it takes a loss for you to learn. I would have thought maybe we’d learn from the St. Charles East mistakes that we made but we’re still not there yet.”

By RYAN WOODEN editorial@kcchronicle.com PLANO – Playing the No. 1 seed in the Plano Christmas Classic with their depth and a Nebraska basketball recruit on the wing, Aurora Christian boys basketball coach Pat McNamara knew he’d have his work cut out for him against Dixon on Monday.

The Dukes entered the contest undefeated and they exited that way, handing Aurora Christian its first loss of the tournament, 66-48.

Led by 6-foot-8 Dixon junior Isaiah Roby, Dixon jumped out to a 17 point lead and held the Eagles at bay in

an intense second half before winning comfortably by 18.

“They’re good team,” Pat McNamara said after the loss relegated them to the thirdplace game at 6:30 p.m. today against Morris. “They’ve got a good coach out there (Jason Mead) and they’ve got five good players of varying skills and they really fit like a glove.”

In the first half, Aurora Christian struggled to find their rhythm offensively with Roby (a Nebraska verbal commit) protecting the rim.

The Dukes led 19-12 at the end of one and would have carried a 20-point lead into the break if not for a half-

court buzzer-beater by coach McNamara’s son, Pat. McNamara would lead Aurora Christian with 13 points on the night to go with three assists and three steals.

However, for the Eagles, two nights after placing five players in double-figures, only Wes Wolfe would join McNamara with 11 points.

In the second half, Aurora Christian came out with a lot of intensity and made several attempts to cut into Dixon’s sizable advantage.

“I was happy with the effort (in the second half), but we just couldn’t seem to get it going. We just couldn’t seem to get a run going, but I think the guys knew after

that first half that they’d have to play harder and they did,” McNamara said.

The loss dropped Aurora Christian to 8-2 on the season.

The atmosphere in the Huntley locker room at halftime was subdued. Geneva (11-2) led, 26-16, before the Red Raiders scored the last four points of the half.

But Huntley outscored the Vikings, 19-8, in the third quarter as Barreto sank all

three of her shots, including two 3-pointers, plus two free throws, while 6-2 forward Ali Andrews added six points and two assists.

“Obviously, we’re disappointed that we lost, but it gives us things to look at to improve and get better at,” Novak said.

“There’s not positives coming out of this but I was happy with how we bounced back [from the loss to Benet]. I thought everybody played hard, everybody left their heart out on the court.”

Rockets dominate 4th quarter, beat North Stars

By JAKE POWERS editorial@kcchronicle.com CARPENTERSVILLE – Something had to give after three hard-fought quarters yielded 10 lead changes and was tied at 36 going in to the final quarter Monday.

Behind a dominant fourth-quarter performance, the Burlington Central girls basketball team topped St. Charles North, 48-38, in the consolation bracket of the Dundee-Crown Charger Classic Holiday Tournament.

Before the start of the final quarter, the Rockets knew that they needed one final push to come out on top.

They held the North Stars to two points and hit key shots when the opportunity arose.

“It had to be our quarter,” Central junior guard Shelby Holt, who lead all scorers with 23 points, said. “We knew that sitting on the bench [after the third quarter]. That’s all we could think of, it’s a tied game, this has to be our quarter.”

The determination displayed by Holt and the rest of her teammates was not lost on coach Mark Smith.

“I think the girls’ resolve sitting on the bench is like ‘Hey, we’ve got to win this quarter, this game’s ours.’ I got a good feeling sitting on the bench saying that.”

After two-and-a-half scoreless minutes in the fourth quarter, Holt hit a baseline jumper and junior forward Rebecca Gerke, on the next possession, made a strong drive

to the basket that resulted in a lay-in.

North’s junior forward Claire Jakaitis answered with a layup of her own, but that was all the scoring Central would allow.

Smith did not make any drastic changes defensively, but he did feel that his team’s adjustments on offense helped them win the final quarter.

“I don’t think anything real special,” Smith said. “Going in we had them well-scouted, the girls have played against them before. The thing that helped us really in the fourth quarter was we made an adjustment against their zone defense.”

While North’s defense held strong for the entire game, it

was its slow start offensively that especially stood out to coach Sean Masoncup.

“We didn’t start the game off like we’ve been doing the last two weeks when we went inside, we allowed that little token pressure to get us going and we didn’t get in to our game,” Masoncup said. “Our game is going inside with our three girls that are six foot and we didn’t do it. You’ve got to give credit to that team.”

Despite their offensive struggles, the North Stars did generate a spark in the third quarter.

Central jumped out to a 3627 lead after going in to halftime up one point, but North struck back with seven unanswered points to force the tie at the end of the third quarter.

Jakaitis scored seven of her fourteen points in the third period, and senior forward Nichole Davidson, who also finished with 14 points, added four of her own.

Masoncup stressed that his team must focus on working the ball into the paint regularly, but he’s confident that the North Stars will smooth out their game.

“We’ll get there, we’re still trying to play with different pieces. It’s still a young season,” Masoncup said.

Burlington Central (11-1) moves on to play Stevenson at 5 p.m. today for fifth place in the tournament, with St. Charles North (9-5) with play for seventh place against Rockton Hononegah at 3:30 p.m. today.

LOMBARD – Huntley guard Kayla Barreto was the smallest player on the court Monday and if she didn’t have the biggest impact on the game, she at least made the most important contribution.

The 5-foot-3 junior point guard scored 10 of her 14 points in the third quarter as the Red Raiders erased a 10-point deficit and went on to edge Geneva, 66-63, in double overtime at the Montini Christmas Tournament.

The win advanced Huntley (9-4) into today’s fifth-place game against Neuqua Valley.

Geneva plays Kenwood in the seventh-place game at 1:15 p.m.

Perhaps more importantly, it gave the Red Raiders confidence they can win tight games, especially in the postseason.

“It was very important because this tournament is one of the biggest in Illinois and this is a good test for us because this is what’s going to happen in postseason,” Barreto said. “So it’s good to see this stuff now so we’re ready for it later. The

Geneva led once in the first overtime, which ended at 54-all and once in the second overtime when Courtney Reynolds sank a 3 to give her team a 57-56 lead with 1:54 to go.

But Huntley scored its last 10 points at the free-throw line, with Morgan Clausen making a pair with 4.2 seconds left to put the game out of reach before Janie McCloughan scored at the buzzer for Geneva.

Huntley was 13 for 14 from the free-throw line in overtime and 26 for 29 overall, while the

Batavia’s Pieczynski drops buzzer-beater KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE ELMHURST – Batavia forward Danny Pieczynski used a shot fake to free himself for a buzzer-beating 3-pointer Monday, lifting the Bulldogs boys basketball team to a thrilling, 41-40 win against Downers Grove South in consolation play at the Jack Tosh Holiday Tournament.

“It’s not something too many people get to experience,” Batavia coach Jim Nazos said of Pieczynski’s buzzer-beater. “I thought we did a pretty good job up to that point. It was a back-and-forth game the whole way. The fourth quarter, I thought both teams did a pretty good job guarding.”

Canaan Coffey assisted on Pieczynski’s winning shot and also had a steal to help Batavia recover from a pair of missed scoring chances, down two points, in the late stages. A missed front end of a one-and-one by the Mustangs gave the Bulldogs their final crack.

Chasen Peez scored 23 points for Batavia while Pieczynski had nine points, all on 3-pointers. Kamontez Thomas sparked Batavia’s defense with five steals.

Batavia (8-5), now 2-1 at the tourna-

ment, advances to a 7:30 p.m. matchup tonight against Sandburg, with the winner advancing to Wednesday’s consolation final.

Monday marked the Bulldogs’ second straight tight win in consolation play after Saturday’s narrow victory against Stagg.

“It was a great moment for the boys there,” Nazos said.

Pontiac Holiday Tournament: St. Charles North’s defense took center stage in the opening matchup of the tournament as North stymied Warren for a 41-25 win.

North (7-4) limited Warren (4-7) to only nine field goals in the morning matchup and set the tone by outscoring the Blue Devils, 11-5, during the first quarter. North led by seven entering the fourth quarter but pulled away with a 16-7 advantage down the stretch.

Junior guard Armon Osborne scored 15 points off the bench, all on 3-pointers. Jake Ludwig added nine points and five steals for North, which will face Plainfield North at 1 p.m. today in the second round.

“This pushes us in the right direction,” Kaneland coach Brian Johnson said. “We definitely need to build up our confidence and obviously when you get some wins that helps.

“The goal is to leave here on a high note and we’re gonna have a tough game tomorrow against [Yorkville], so the win today was big for us because they’re a load to guard. They’ve got a ton of shooters.”

Kaneland started the game with a quick 7-0 run, but it was all Genoa-Kingston during the middle portion of the game. The Cogs carried a 37-31 lead into the fourth quarter before Dylan Vaca and the Knights took control.

Vaca poured in 17 of his 21 points during the second half and had 10 of those points come in the fourth quar-

Saints cruise past Barbs for tourney championship

That was about the only downside at the close of a glorious week for the Saints at the Chuck Dayton Holiday Tournament, culminating with Saturday night’s 76-52 win against host DeKalb in the championship game.

East (12-1) claimed its 10th straight victory and won its four tournament games by an average of 31 points in its debut season in the tradition-rich DeKalb event.

“It’s a blast,” East senior guard Jake Asquini said. “Winning’s always fun. Our team gets along so well, on and off the court, so when we’re winning, it just makes it even better.”

The Saints encountered little resistance throughout the tournament but some materialized during the second quarter with senior point guard and tournament MVP Cole Gentry sidelined with his second foul.

“I think that was really important,” McQuillan said. “That was one

of our first times in the tournament we faced some adversity so for us to step up and answer their run was huge, and I think is just a testament of how good we can be as a team.”

Asquini went 6 of 10 from the 3-point line and led the Saints with 20 points. He accounted for half of the Saints’ 12 3-pointers on the night.

“My teammates always do an amazing job of finding me the ball,” Asquini said. “They created most of my shots so I can’t thank them enough. But I like this gym. I get a good feel for it once I see one or two go in.”

McQuillan added 18 points and took a leading role running the offense with Gentry out for the end of the second quarter and almost all of the third quarter with foul trouble.

“I thought we had a really good gameplan against Cole,” DeKalb coach Al Biancalana said. “We know that he’s going to make some shots but we really wanted to be dedicated to taking away his penetration. We just did not do a good job on McQuillan. McQuillan continually drove the

ball, straight-line drives he got to the basket, and I thought that was the difference. … He got into the paint any time he wanted, and that really hurt us.”

Gentry was held to nine points but the Saints again flashed the depth that’s enabled them to rip off a double-digit win streak.

Center Jack Bronec and McQuillan joined Gentry on the all-tournament team while reserve guard Jake Clodi scored seven of his 10 points during the second quarter.

“I’ll be honest, I was kind of glad Cole was in foul trouble because we need to do things without him on the floor,” East coach Pat Woods said. “I just think the depth that we have, we got a little flustered for about 45 seconds, but we regrouped and went on a [big] run and hit some 3s.”

Moline won the tournament’s third-place game over Glenbrook North, while Marmion fell to Hampshire in the fifth-place game of the 16team event, 58-52.

The Cadets were led by 19 points from guard Jordan Glasgow.

But he echoed Bennett’s sentiments not only regarding the universal failure on offense, but also the optimism that lies ahead after Trestman’s final meeting with the team helped provide closure and, in turn, optimism for what’s next.

Yet, unlike Bennett, Long was very specific regarding the type of coach he’s anxious to see come in to oversee what he deemed a “rebuilding process.”

“The right coach for Chicago is one that wants to instill an identity, demands a team that has an identity, and when we play opponents, they should say, ‘We don’t want to play those guys,’ ” Long said. “There’s a handful of teams in the NFL that are like that and I feel like we have the nucleus to be able to do that. We haven’t done that, and that’s something that we need to do.”

LAKE FOREST – Kyle Long received his first shot in the NFL because of Marc Trestman and Phil Emery. Martellus Bennett’s two most productive seasons were overseen by the now-former Bears regime.

Thus, while neither appeared surprised when talking with the media at Halas Hall after learning their former bosses received pink slips on “Black Monday,” both expressed gratitude for the role both the former Bears coach and general manager played in their respective success.

“Obviously, I have the utmost respect for Trestman and Phil Emery – those are the guys that stood on the table for me prior to the draft last year,” said Long, who has been to two Pro Bowls since many NFL observers thought selecting him with the 20th overall pick in 2013 was a reach by Emery. “There weren’t many people that did that around the league, so I’m

Bears online The firings of Phil Emery and Marc Trestman are regrettable mostly because neither one ever really had a chance.

While the world knows the story now of how Emery basically chased Bruce Arians away while casting his lot with Trestman, thus sealing his fate, the truth is he’s a very good scout who wasn’t close to ready for a GM job.

When the Bears were searching for a GM three years ago, other clubs were looking too. Emery wasn’t on any other clubs’ lists.

As much as Emery prided himself on the thoroughness of his head coaching search, it shouldn’t have taken him more than an hour or two to know Trestman shouldn’t have been an option.

The last straw for Emery, of course, was the bizarre decision to reward Cutler with a franchise quarterback’s contract when he had done nothing on the field to earn it. The availability of the franchise tag left the Bears with no risk at all of losing him, and for the same or less money than they gave him without guaranteeing any of it more than 1/3 of the total per year.

The still open questions about his drafting and ridiculous stubbornness in forcing Shea McClellin on to the field are footnotes to his two main failings.

When Emery hired Trestman, I couldn’t find a single NFL source, insider or analyst who didn’t question his ability to handle a locker room.

So how did that work out?

There was never a moment to believe Trestman and Cutler were a good match personality wise, and minimal research proved Trestman was a knowledgeable offensive mind but far, far from a master.

Equally disturbing about the Trestman hire was the

way he divorced himself from the defense. He actually convinced segments of Bears Nation that it could win with mediocre defense at best.

Under Trestman, the Bears have fielded one of the worst defenses in the league in successive seasons, an affront to any savvy NFL watcher.

Between them, Emery and Trestman inherited a 10-6 team, turned it into one of the worst in the league, and made the NFL’s most storied franchise a laughing stock.

Congratulations to the McCaskey family for acknowledging its mistake and not insisting on wasting another season. Sticking with Emery and Trestman would have made the situation worse.

The problem now is twofold. First, it is critical that Ted Phillips, the principal architect of this mess, be kept completely out of the football side of the operation, specifically the hiring of the new GM and coach.

Most importantly, the new general manager should not come from within the organization or have any ties to the Bears last 25-plus years of dysfunction.

Rewarding their familiarity with Emery is what got the Bears into this mess in the first place.

There is a ton of bright young talent out there ready and dying to take on the challenge of the Bears. Bears fans have to hope George McCaskey knows how to find it.

Dear Abby: “Left Out in Florida” (Sept. 2) feels it is inconsiderate of her daughter-in-law to speak only her native language (not English) with her children in front of their grandparents. You advised that the mother should speak English in this situation.

My son attends a bilingual immersion school, and I have experience with this issue. I have attended lectures about raising bilingual children.

It is extremely difficult to pass on a language other than English to kids living in America. As the children grow, they will be increasingly drawn to English.

The most successful families are those who do exactly what the mom in the letter is doing. They speak only their native language with their children and are very persistent about it. This is the recommendation of the experts in the field.

What should also be happening

Grandparents don’t need to understand everything that is said, and their job is to speak English with the youngsters so they become truly bilingual.

It broadens mental development, thought patterns and world perspective. It must be done during childhood while the brain is still pliable, and continue until adulthood or the language will be lost.

Getting second pneumonia vaccine is now recommended Dear Doctor K: I’m 70 years old. I already had a pneumonia vaccine, back when I was 65.

At my checkup last week, my doctor said I need to get another one. Why? Dear Reader: I always like to hear that adults are staying up to date with their vaccinations, as you did when you received a dose of the PPSV23 (Pneumovax) vaccine at age 65. Pneumovax helps protect against pneumonia caused by one common type of bacteria, called pneumococcus.

Pneumonia caused by pneumococcus bacteria can make people very sick, very fast. I know: It happened to me.

Without treatment, the pneumonia can become severe. The bacteria can also spread into the bloodstream or can cause meningitis, a serious infection of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord.

Now, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is advising adults age 65 and older to get a second vaccine to prevent bacterial pneumonia. The second vaccine, PCV13 (Prevnar 13), is expected to prevent many additional cases of pneumonia.

The PCV13 vaccine is not “new.” It has been included

The CDC recommends a single dose of PCV13 for anyone who is older than 65. If you have the option, the CDC says it is best to get the PCV13 before the PPSV23. If you are getting the PCV13 first, wait a year between the two vaccines. If, as in your case, you have already received the PPSV23 vaccine, you can still get the PCV13 vaccine.

Vaccines are important for avoiding infection. But these vaccines protect only against specific bacteria. There are many other things you can, and should, do to reduce your risk of catching pneumonia caused by other bacteria and viruses.

These measures will also protect you against a cold, the flu and many other infections.

The best way to protect yourself from infection is to wash your hands often with soap and warm water. Rub your hands together for a full 20 seconds. If

you don’t have access to soap and water, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Stay away from people you know are sick. If you are sick, stay home to avoid infecting others. At home, avoid kissing, hugging and sharing utensils with someone who is unwell.

When I caught pneumonia due to pneumococcus, I hadn’t received the vaccine – because I was not old enough. I was feeling great when I went to bed.

When I got up the next morning, however, I felt very tired. When I looked in the mirror, I looked white as a ghost. I felt hot and had a high fever. I took myself to the emergency room and my blood pressure was very low: I was in shock.

Fortunately, prompt treatment turned me around and I was back in action a few days later. But I came close to dying.

When it came time for me to get the vaccine, I surely did. I don’t want that to happen ever again.

Kim had planned a holiday party and invited 10 girls to attend. My family changed our plans for the day of the party so I could attend.

Then two days before the party Kim called everybody and told us the party was cancelled. When I asked her why, she said her party was cancelled because she was being punished for not cleaning her room.

I think her parents should have found another way to punish her and that they were also punishing us girls. My mom agrees with me, but my dad agrees with Kim’s parents. Dr. Wallace: I read the letter from the 16-year-old girl who decided to give up her baby for adoption and wanted to feel better about doing so afterward, and I fully understand her situation.

I was in the same situation. A week after I turned 16 years old, I gave birth to a baby girl.

I had no money and I was very young and very confused and left to make it by myself.

I decided the best thing to do was to give my baby up for adoption.

I have regretted it many times, but I know that giving her up for adoption gave her a real chance at happiness and fulfillment. I did what was best for her, not for me. The adoptive fam-

If he had asked himself which 12 tricks he could have won, he would have seen four top spades (he needed trumps 3-3), two hearts, two diamonds, three clubs and a club ruff in the dummy.

South takes the first trick with his diamond ace, leads a spade to dummy’s queen, returns a club to his jack, ruffs his low club in the dummy, cashes the spade ace, plays a heart to his king, cashes the spade king (drawing trumps), and leads a diamond toward dummy’s jack. Whew!
