Tree-lighting event set in Kaneville

WHAT: The village of Kaneville will host its tree lighting. Residents are encouraged to bring an ornament to help decorate. Ornaments will be donated to the Kaneville Historical Society. Batavia aldermen back liquor tax for Dec. 7 vote BATAVIA – The majority of Batavia aldermen on Wednesday were in a favor of introducing a 2 percent liquor tax in the city.

Batavia aldermen at their Committee of the Whole meeting voted, 9-1, to recommend the proposed liquor tax for

approval to the Batavia City Council. Ward 4 Alderman Susan Stark voted against the motion.

Under the proposal, anyone required to retain a liquor license in Batavia would be subject to a 2 percent tax effective Feb. 1.

Five retailers pass tobacco compliance checks in Elburn

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ELBURN – Five Elburn retailers recently passed a test to see whether they would sell tobacco products to minors, according to an Elburn Police Department news release.

The release indicated the Nov. 13 check was required as part of the Illinois Liquor Control Commission’s “Kids Can’t Buy ’Em Here” tobacco control grant.

Elburn conducts three compliance checks a year, the release stated.

According to the release, police sent a 17-year-old decoy agent to all six of the licensed tobacco retail establishments in the village.

A 19-year-old sales clerk

at BP Amoco, 940 N. Main St., reportedly sold a pack of Camel Blue cigarettes to the teen after checking his or her identification, the release stated.

Hassan Imran, of the 1300 block of Hall Street, Sugar Grove, was issued a notice to appear on a charge of selling tobacco to a minor.

Imran is expected at 9 a.m.

Dec. 18 in Kane County Branch Court in St. Charles, according to the release.

These retailers were expected to receive written confirmation about successfully passing the check: Elburn Mobil, 213 S. Main St.; Elburn Liquors, 319 S. Main St.; Valley Liquors, 151 E. Route 38; Jewel-Osco, 800 N. Main St.; and Walgreens, 1001 N. Main St.

Pal Joey’s owner John Hamel on Wednesday said having to pay the tax will cost him an additional $6,000 a year.

“For a business like mine, it’s hard to pass this increase to customers,” Hamel said at

The aldermen on Nov. 24 voted, 12-2, to table the issue so they could further consider the tax.

Most of them decided it was an opportunity they should implement.

Ward 2 Alderman Marty Callahan said he was sympathetic to Hamel. Callahan said he would not be opposed to re-

considering the liquor tax in a year, but currently was in favor of it.

“We’re trying to do this to avoid a property tax increase,” he said.

Aldermen Carl Fischer of Ward 1, Dan Chanzit of Ward 3, Mike Russotto of Ward 6 and Drew McFadden of Ward 7 were absent from Wednesday’s meeting.

The performances will be at 6:30 p.m. today, Monday and Tuesday, and at noon Saturday at the Baker Community Center, 101 S. Second St., St. Charles.

More than 200 boys and girls, ranging in age from 2 to 18, will perform a variety of dances including ballet, jazz, hip-hop, point, tap and creative movement.

THE MYOPIA EPIDEMIC

With rates of “myopia” (nearsightedness) increasing worldwide, many are labeling it a “myopia epidemic.” When trying to attach a specific cause to this pervasive problem, cell-phone use comes to mind. It may seem to make sense that spending more time squinting into the screen of a handheld digital device may make users more prone to nearsightedness, but there is another, more likely cause. Research indicates that, as children spend less time outdoors than peering into computer screens, they are depriving themselves of the sunlight needed to preserve good eyesight. Scientists speculate that natural light stimulates the normal release of dopamine (a major neurotransmitter in the retina) that guards against nearsightedness. If so, more time spent outdoors may help avert myopia.

P.S. In the United States and Europe, about onehalf of children and young adults are thought to be nearsighted, which is double the prevalence of myopia a half century ago.

Negotiations continue in Kaneland Superintendent says ‘progress was made’ in latest session

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – Kaneland’s superintendent said Wednesday that “progress was made” Tuesday during the latest negotiating session between School District 302 officials and the union that represents its teachers.

The latest contract for teachers represented by the Kaneland Education Association expired July 1, and negotiations have been ongoing for a new contract. Last month, the KEA announced teachers had voted in favor of moving forward with an intent to strike.

Since then, the KEA hosted a public forum, and teachers have spoken during the public comment portion of recent meetings of Kaneland’s school board.

Both sides had stated salary and salary structure are the issues needing to be settled. Teachers at the forum last month stated they were about $500,000 apart on an agreement. The school board previously revealed teachers had been offered a deal that would add, on Todd Leden average, about a 5 percent increase each year over the next three years. The next negotiating session is set for Dec. 17.

Superintendent Todd Leden would not offer specifics on the progress that was made. Asked whether he believed the sides were closer than the $500,000 figure the teachers cited last month, Leden said the sides

were closer dollar-wise when that figure was first cited. He added, “We are making progress.”

Susan Acksel, the KEA’s chief negotiator, stated in an email Wednesday that the KEA “is not willing to release any details” about the most recent negotiation session, “except for the fact we were not able to reach an agreement, and our next session is scheduled for December 17.”

Dozens of teachers spoke during the public comment portion of Monday’s meeting, with several saying the district has enough money in its reserves to cover the cost of what teachers are requesting. Teachers have stated the district has more than $13.39 million available. On Wednesday, the school board’s president, Teresa Witt, said that only a portion

of the fund balance is in the education fund, which is the fund that pays teacher salaries.

“The fund balance is not one large fund that we can draw from for any purpose,” Witt said.

She said the education fund is projected to have $2.4 million, including $1.5 million she said can’t be accessed because it has to do with health care.

Some money in the reserves, about $4.7 million, is projected for the transportation fund, and Witt said the district has an aging bus fleet. Also, she said, there are concerns about whether school districts will have to help shoulder the cost of pensions in the future, as well as a potential property-tax freeze and payments from the state that have been withheld.

“If we spend the reserves, when the changes do come

from the state, and if we didn’t have the money in reserves to pay them, we would have to cut staff and programs,” Witt said.

Witt said the district has been fortunate to come in under budget in recent years, so the fund balance has increased.

But, she said, “if you spend the reserve money on things that are recurring costs, eventually, when the reserves are depleted, or if they’re depleted, you can’t continue to make those payments.”

Witt said the board “does have an interest in attracting and retaining quality teachers.

We do value all of our teachers, and we do want them to make a competitive wage, but we do also have to consider the financial health of the district.”

Of the negotiations, Witt said she was “pleased that we are still at the table and still negotiating, and I’m optimistic that we can reach an agreement.”

SUGAR GROVE – Officials from the energy conservation company Cenergistic provided Kaneland’s school board members with an update Monday, showing the company had saved School District 302 nearly $94,000 in the first year of a five-year program.

However, board member Ryan Kerry pointed out the district spent about $114,000 with Cenergistic and had a guarantee the district would save at least as much as it spent.

“Are we getting a check for $20,000?” Kerry asked.

Bob Davis, a regional president with Cenergistic, said the company would offer a deferment for three months. He said with the district’s cost of $9,000 a month, that adds up to more than $20,000. Kerry pointed out that deferment would happen at the end of the contract, adding, “that is not the same as providing a refund.”

“So you didn’t bring the check?” Kerry asked. Davis responded he did not, but he added there were some suggestions not taken by the district that could have helped. Other board members expressed their disappointment, and the topic will be revisited again at a future board meeting.

Board members approved the contract in April 2014, with Pedro Rivas voting against the deal. Kerry had not yet joined the board at that point.

On Monday, Davis appeared with other Cenergistic officials, including Jacob Keene, the district’s energy specialist.

Keene recently started in the part-time position, as the previous specialist resigned, and the district went through a period of 10 weeks without a specialist, officials said. During that time, officials said, Cenergistic continued to work with the district, just without a specialist in place.

Rivas asked whether the district was required to pay

Cenergistic full fees for that period of time.

“Yes, and we did,” Associate Superintendent Julie-Ann Fuchs said.

Cenergistic pointed out ways in which the energy specialist works to help the district save money, including weekly audits, training, working with the maintenance team and working to promote an “energy conservation culture.” However, board members said there hadn’t been any significant culture change. Board President Teresa Witt said the understanding was students would play a role, and she said that has not happened.

Witt said during Cenergistic’s original presentation, “we saw huge numbers from other districts [in savings], and we didn’t see that.” She added “What we hung our hats on was that guarantee,” and she pointed out it was a campaign issue.

“What you are hearing is our disappointment,” Witt said.

Project reveals tidbits on past county state’s attorneys On the Web

ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – Joe McMahon’s path to becoming the Kane County state’s attorney certainly is different from that of his early predecessors.

His staff recently researched the 41 people who held the post before him and shared highlights of the findings during McMahon’s monthly meeting with reporters Tuesday.

McMahon wanted to get a better understanding of the

office’s history and the challenges it has faced, he said.

He not only wanted the information available to his staff but also to the public, he said, noting that biographies of every Kane County state’s attorney are online at saopublic. co.kane.il.us.

He said he is “very appreciative” of those who shared information with his staff for this project.

According to the research, the first state’s attorney, Alonzo Huntington, served from 1837 to 1839 and was present when the first day of court was held at a log home in Geneva on June 19, 1837.

Public service was a theme throughout the officeholders, as they included veterans from the Civil War and World War II and those who served in the U.S. Senate and House, according to the research.

The staff also noticed other trends, such as how people once served as state’s attorney early in their law careers rather than seeking it as a destination job.

Two state’s attorneys were born outside the United States – Germany and Ireland – and many others came from New England, the research revealed. Additionally, many didn’t live in Kane County and served multiple counties.

Other highlights included the following: • Burton C. Cook, who held office from 1847 to 1851,

nominated Abraham Lincoln for the presidency at the 1860 and 1864 Republican National Conventions.

• Charles J. Metzner – who served from 1861 to 1865 and from 1869 to 1872 – initially set out to become a blacksmith but was forced to give it up because of an eye injury from a spark.

• Henry B. Willis, whose tenure was from 1876 to 1880, was married to Marie Glidden Hunter, the town attorney for Elburn and the only female lawyer in Kane County at that time.

St. Charles officer injured in traffic stop ST. CHARLES – An Elgin woman injured a St. Charles police officer during an exchange Tuesday, underscoring the dangers that a simple traffic stop can lead to, Deputy Chief David Kintz said.

He said a suspended vehicle registration prompted the officer to stop a red 2000 Volkswagen Jetta at 10:55 a.m. on Kirk Road at Fox Chase Drive in St. Charles.

The driver – Cheryl Wylde, 24, of the 300 block of McClure Avenue – had an active Kane County w a r r a n t f o r Cheryl Wylde failure to appear in court on a burglary charge, Kintz said. Her driver’s license also was suspended.

The officer told her to turn the car off – its loud exhaust made conversation difficult, and she had the vehicle in gear – but she turned it back on and started to drive away, Kintz said.

As she started the car, he said, the officer reached through the open window to unlock and open the door. Wylde, however, pulled on the door and quickly drove away,

The officer suffered an injury to his elbow and wrist but didn’t require medical attention, Kintz said.

“He didn’t miss any [work] time at all,” he said.

In an attempt to evade arrest, Wylde tried to turn onto Majestic Oaks Drive but went too fast and crashed into a median, Kintz said. He said that prevented her from entering a residential area.

Wylde, who was taken into custody, was charged with aggravated battery to a police officer, a Class 2 felony, and three misdemeanors: resisting or obstructing a police officer, fleeing or eluding a police officer and driving with a suspended license.

She also was charged with having a suspended registration, driving without insurance and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Online records indicated Wylde was being held in the Kane County Jail on Wednesday afternoon on $150,750 bond.

SUGAR GROVE – A woman had her vehicle stolen when she left it unlocked and running while getting a carryout order in Sugar Grove, according to a Sugar Grove police report.

The incident reportedly happened about 7:08 p.m. Nov. 14 at King Wok, which is in a shopping center at 495 N. Route 47 just north of Galena Boulevard.

She also left her cellphone in the white 2005 Ford Explorer, police reported, noting an app traced the Motorola Razr on Interstate 88 about a halfmile east of Eola Road in Aurora.

A police officer later recovered the phone on the interstate’s south shoulder just west of Route 59, police reported. The phone reportedly had a cracked screen and appeared to have been thrown out of a moving car and/or run over.

By the next day, the woman had obtained the I-Pass activity associated with the vehicle’s transponder and reported that transponder as stolen, police reported.

Police Chief Pat Rollins wrote in an email the Ford was recovered two days later along the side of a road in Aurora.

“No suspect has been identified yet to charge, as it was found unoccupied,” he wrote.

Nicholas S. Castiglia, 29, was under surveillance by Downers Grove police about 6:45 p.m. when he began looking into vehicles parked at XSport Fitness, 238 N. Randall Road, St. Charles Deputy Chief David Kintz said.

Detectives watched as Castiglia broke a window on a Pontiac Vibe and took a bag from inside the vehicle, Kintz said.

Castiglia fled in a red Chevrolet Express Nicholas S. at a high rate Castiglia of speed when officers converged on him, Kintz said.

Not wanting to escalate into a pursuit, officers followed Castiglia with their emergency lights off, Kintz

said.

St. Charles detectives took Castiglia into custody when he stopped at the McDonald’s at 453 Redington Drive in South Elgin, Kintz said, explaining Castiglia was unaware he was under surveillance.

Castiglia, of the 800 block of Woodhill Drive, Carol Stream, was charged with burglary, a Class 2 felony; possession of burglary tools, a Class 4 felony; and criminal damage to property, a Class A misdemeanor.

For members of the St. Charles Park District’s Adult Activity Center, the annual Winter Wonderland Dinner Party is a much-anticipated time to reflect on the wonders of the season and celebrate another year of sharing the special programs, trips and daily activities that make the AAC a significant and special part of the lives for those older than 50 years old.

tion put on by the Adult Activity Center. Held at the Q Center and sponsored by Monarch Landing, the event will be from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and includes round-trip transportation from the Pottawatomie Community Center, 8 North Ave., St. Charles, for anyone who needs it.

Guests will enjoy a threecourse, plated meal, beginning with a salad of mixed greens with spinach, hearts of palm, roasted red pepper, goat cheese crostini and walnut vinaigrette. Diners can choose between two entrées: smoked spice crusted salmon with roasted yellow pepper coulis and Yukon gold potatoes with asparagus and chives; or French chicken breast in a Madeira wine reduction with garlic and herb fingerling potatoes and haricots verts. Residents prepare for Christmas in Kaneville this weekend If you go

“It looks beautiful,” Kaneville Village President Pat Hill said.

The lighting of the tree at 7 p.m. Friday outside the store, also known as the “Purple Store,” at 2S133 Harter Road, Kaneville, kicks off the Christmas in Kaneville twoday event.

Those attending the lighting may bring a handmade ornament representing a family or business.

The store on Friday will provide hot chocolate, apple cider and treats. Then from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, the store will have a customer appreciation event with free hot hors d’oeuvres, peppermint ice cream and hot chocolate.

Catching up during holiday breaks As I have mentioned before, college – for the most part – is great. There’s more independence; the lectures professors preach are usually entertaining; people of all backgrounds are more accepting of others; and the campuses are more pleasing to look at than, say, a high school.

There’s really only one downside to going to college, or in my case specifically, community college: I get separated from my close friends.

A couple of my friends go to universities in Wisconsin and Missouri, and another settled down in a place where it’s a perfect 60 degrees all year round. Yet, here I am, staying put in Illinois.

While I have a few friends who go to Waubonsee Community College, too, my old high school group of friends is not all quite together during the school year, and it can be quite upsetting. However, I do not fret, because holiday breaks exist. Thanksgiving break, winter break, spring break – they’re all perfect for one thing: reuniting with friends who I otherwise do not see on a regular basis anymore.

A couple years back, I remember my eldest brother used to jump whenever some of his buddies would come back home for the weekend or for a long school break. He would hang out with his pals every day it seemed, or simply, every second he could. I always thought it was excessive how much he’d hang out with them, and I’d often ask myself, “Doesn’t he get sick of being with his friends all the time within a seven-day time span?”

Now, I understand. For Thanksgiving break, a couple of my friends came back in town, and I wanted nothing more but to be with them while they were in Batavia. No

BEFORE THE DIPLOMA Denise Cartina matter if it was just watching TV in my basement, going shopping or grabbing milkshakes, I solely wanted to be by my friends’ sides every chance I could over the break. We all had so many stories to share and so much information to catch up on, that it seemed like there was never enough time to pack in everything we wanted to do and say. I, like many other college students, pack in a year’s worth of fun with my pals into just a few school breaks throughout the year because that’s all we get.

Although it can be several straight months without seeing my friends during the school year, it always surprises me that it feels as if nothing has changed since they have left for college. Time freezes once my friends leave and then melts and continues once they arrive home again.

With Thanksgiving break behind us, I’m yearning to just fast-forward a few weeks from now when winter break begins. This is my first year where I’ll be getting an entire month off from anything school related, so you can imagine all the Netflix I will be watching in my spare time. A whole month of being surrounded by my closest pals definitely is something I’m looking forward to, to say the least.

Ducking and dodging in Chicago THE WASHINGTON POST It didn’t take long for Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s rickety one-bad-apple narrative to implode. As an explanation for a white police officer firing his gun 16 times into the body of black teenager Laquan McDonald in October of last year, it was a flimsy story from the outset given the systemic wrongdoing that allegedly followed the killing, and it quickly collapsed under the weight of popular outrage in the Windy City and across the country.

On Tuesday, Emanuel, facing irate questions from the public, the media and some of his political allies, beat a tactical retreat by firing Police Superintendent Garry F. McCarthy, naming a task force to address the police department’s obvious lack of accountability and acknowledging in a City Hall news conference what he called “the undeniable fact that the public trust in the leadership of the [police] department has been shaken

and eroded.” Much the same is true about the mayor’s own leadership, as he also admitted.

A task force is well and good, but Emanuel, forced into a runoff and re-elected in April, has more explaining to do.

The video, made public last week by order of a Cook County judge, shows Officer Jason Van Dyke opening fire even as the 17-year-old McDonald, who was carrying a small folding knife, veered away from police. The officer continued to shoot even after McDonald was on the ground, hitting him repeatedly in the back.

At Tuesday’s news conference, Emanuel defended the city’s efforts to keep the video secret as an effort not to taint the case – a case that showed no sign of life before the video was ordered released, at which point the Cook County prosecutor, Anita Alvarez, suddenly swung into action and, 13 months after the fact, charged Van

Dyke with murder. (He has said he is innocent and will fight the charges.) In the face of the mayor’s dodging and weaving, Chicago reporters wanted to know, with good reason, whether he had fought the video’s release and delayed approval of a $5 million settlement with the McDonald family to protect his prospects in a tough re-election year.

A task force on police accountability cannot be the end of the McDonald case.

At least seven other officers were standing there when Van Dyke opened fire; if they lied about it, they should be prosecuted, too. Alvarez, the prosecutor, needs to explain her own inertia more convincingly than she has; if she cannot, she also should resign.

And what about the feds?

FBI and Justice Department officials began investigating the McDonald killing just weeks after the fact. If Alvarez wouldn’t move to bring Van Dyke to justice, why couldn’t they?

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

‘A Christmas Story’ goes musical Director: Production equally fun for children and adults alike

usicals can bring a whole new element to iconic motion pictures. You have your “Lion King” and “Finding Neverland” musicals on Broadway, and now the Paramount Theatre in Aurora has the classic holiday favorite, “A Christmas Story: The Musical.”

Director Nick Bowling of Chicago was approached by the Paramount a little more than a year ago, and, while he was familiar with the classic movie, he was not as familiar with the musical version.

For those not familiar with the movie, it is centered around a 9-year-old boy named Ralphie (played by Michael Harp in the Paramount production) who grows up in the 1940s and wants a BB gun for Christmas.

Bowling, 47 – with the help of others – turned the family fun movie into what he called “probably the funniest show I’ve ever been a part of working on.”

“A Christmas Story: The Musical” performances will run through Sunday, Jan. 3, with tickets starting at $41. The Paramount Theatre is located at 23 E. Galena Blvd. in Aurora.

Kane County Chronicle reporter Chris Casey caught up with Bowling to talk about what makes the musical different from the movie, and, well, why it’s worth going to see. Here’s what he had to say: Chris Casey: What are the main differences between the movie and musical?

Nick Bowling: Well, first off, we wanted to figure out how to make each of the dream sequences come to life. They are shown in small bits and pieces in the

movie, but in the musical, the dream sequences are the production numbers.

So, what we realized was that we wanted each dream sequence to be a certain reference that a boy who is 9 years old in 1940 would understand. There is one with a gangster movie, a comic book, a horror movie and more, so that really helped us understand what it was going to be like and helped create the musical.

Casey: What’s your favorite part of putting a show like this on?

Bowling: It’s definitely the biggest show and in the biggest theater that I’ve directed in. But I like that because, in the Paramount, I can kind of get lost and sneak in with the audience and hear what they honestly think about it without them knowing I’m the director. In a small theater, it’s strange to watch it amongst people because everyone knows you’re the director.

The rest of it is very true to the movie. It’s the addition of music and the wild fantasies that Ralphie gets that really separate it from the movie and actually take it to a new level.

Casey: So, is this musical something that children would enjoy much more than adults?

Bowling: The fact that it’s so funny and heartbreaking, with the heartbreaking aspect being the audience really reminiscing from their own childhood, it makes it equally fun for children and adults.

It’s funny because a lot of the humor meant for adults goes right over the children’s heads. But there’s that great aspect that makes it so funny for children to enjoy that I truly believe it’s a show that has it all and is the best of both worlds.

Casey: If people have seen the movie so many times, why come see the show?

Bowling: I’m glad you asked that. We hear that, and, well, why do you watch it every year? Because it’s a fun story, but now you have that same fun story with a few twists to it. It’s funny at times because the audience is so far ahead of us, thinking they know exactly where the show is going to go next, but the musical throws in a twist or turn that they are not expecting. That’s one big thing that makes it worth going to see,

Disappointment fuels excitement at East

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – John Tarpey had to do a double take when realizing that no St. Charles East athlete made it to the second day of last season’s IHSA Boys Swimming and Diving State Meet.

There was no doubt a fair amount of disappointment present at first, but Tarpey now realizes that it only added fuel to the fire for his senior year.

“We are really excited as a group this year,” Tarpey said.

“I think that’s the general theme with team coming in.

We were pretty disappointed with our finish at state, and I think this year it’s more about getting guys in the top six instead of just placing.

“Our relay teams were really looking to do big things last year at state and when we didn’t, we had to take a step back and say, ‘Oh, well now we want it even more. We want to get back there even worse than before.’ “ Tarpey did not qualify for his individual race at state, the 100-yard backstroke, and vows that a core group is on the same page and holding high expectations for themselves heading into this season.

East coach Joe Cabel also coaches the Saints’ girls swim team and said he’s always called the coaching transition similar to that of “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,” knowing that dealing with each team differently is effective in its own way. For this group of experienced swimmers returning, he feels there is certainly potential to do some strong things this season.

“We’re a well-rounded team,” Cabel said. “We have a good group of seasoned vets and some guys that have been to the show, so we’re hoping that middle class of juniors and sophomores and younger freshmen follow suit. There

One other piece of the team that Cabel is quite excited about takes off in his competition from a slightly larger platform.

Senior Andrew Lewarchick, who recently committed to the Illinois-Chicago diving team, not only has lofty goals for himself, but Cabel

said is as focused a member of the team as he’s ever had in a venerable career.

“The word that comes to mind with Andrew is focus,” Cabel said. “He’s worked extremely hard this offseason and will be one of our leaders this year. He drove around to different places this offseason, all across the state, to work on his diving, and I don’t see anyone who can get in the way of how focused he is coming into this season. He’s looked very,

very strong thus far.”

Lewarchick, a gymnast by trade as a child, thought the transition to diving would take a lot of the same traits as a gymnast.

Since his first days taking part in any sport, Lewarchick said he’s been very competitive, and that has fueled his passion for diving.

“I’m trying to do my best to make this as tight-knit of a group as I can,” Tarpey said. “You have your divisions among teammates sometimes and – knock on wood – it hasn’t happened with us so far. We spend a lot of time together in the pool and I think it’s

really important to be close. Whether it’s cheering guys on at poolside or finding particular ways to motivate each other, we need to make sure we’re making an effort to do that.”

After scoring zero points at the boys state meet for the first time in school history, the climb has only motivated the Saints to bring the program back to where they want to be.

ST. CHARLES – Although it might be a bit of a lofty goal for coach Rob Rooney to expect his boys swimming and diving team to take home a trophy after his girls brought the first piece of swimming hardware back to St. Charles North last month, the goals are still high.

Rooney, who swam at St. Charles High, said the boys have been very close to earning a trophy a few times, and with all-around depth struggling not only for the North Stars, but what Rooney feels as a whole in the state, it is hard to judge what could be once the state meet hits in late February.

“There’s a few teams like Peoria Notre Dame and Naperville Central that are really good, but after that, there’s a ton of quality teams,” Rooney said. “I’d like to think we’re included in that group of eight or nine teams that are separated by a point here or there.”

But it’s early in the season and Rooney is well aware of that. Although Iowa-bound senior captain Joe Myhre returns after two top-six finishes at state last year in his 50-yard and 100 freestyle races and jokingly said “we don’t want (the girls team) to one-up us,” he is aware it’s going to take hard work, regardless.

“I just want them to take another step this year,” Rooney said on the heels of North’s 10th-place overall at state last season (41 points). “I have a big place for St. Charles boys swimming in my heart, having swam here, and what it meant to be a boys swimmer here. If a guy like Joe Myhre can get a few guys to run with him, then we’ll see what could happen.”

Rooney said he’s seen Myhre take on a much more vocal leadership role in the early going, and expects to see that continue. For Myhre, that active leadership

role has grown because he knows North is on the verge of cracking the top six teams, but more importantly, he truly believes that a trophy is a realistic goal for the team this year.

“One of the most important things is all being on board together,” Myhre said.

“It can’t be a handful of guys. Each and every one of us needs to believe and be all in here from the start. I think if we do that, we should like where we finish once state rolls around.”

Cadets go as Kamps goes: Fresh off his state title with the Rosary girls team, Marmion coach Bill Schalz has much more of a test to bring home hardware with the boys.

Sophomore Will Kamps will be largely relied upon to bring Marmion some points throughout the entire season, after finishing 12th in the 500 free and qualifying for state in the 200 Individual medley a season ago.

“He is one of the guys that we feel right now can legitimately be a top-six guy in state,” Schalz said. “He’s put in the time and work and we really feel his best swims are ahead of him.”

Schalz also mentioned brothers Anthony Bliss (seniors) and Henry Bliss (freshman) as two athletes he expects to contribute, as well as Joel Bottarini, Joey Reiter, Sam Wehrli and Nathan Kuszynski. Joining Henry Bliss as a freshman on the Cadets team is Nolan Fergus.

Schalz isn’t exactly sure what he has with this group, but as time usually does, it will tell him quite a bit about the future and what this team is capable of come February.

“It’s one of those things where we could get 30th, or if we swim really well, crack the top 10 or 15,” Schalz said. “We’ll have to wait and see, but I always expect strong performances from the groups that I coach.”

DeKALB – Kaneland junior Grace Lindgren’s series of 463 led the Knights girls bowling team to 2,403 to 2,276 victory against Lisle Wednesday night at Mardi Gras Lanes.

Other top scorers for Kaneland were seniors Marissa Michi (424), Melissa Endrenal (410) and Anu Kadampelil (405).

Kaneland is back in action on Saturday, as it heads to Carpentersville for the Dundee-Crown Charger Scramble.

‘Every week, we’re in a better place’ Club jells at FVIA during streak

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Steel defenseman Billy Sweezey suppressed any hard-earned bragging rights over his former Dubuque Fighting Saints teammates during a homeand-home sweep this past weekend.

“I know a good amount of the guys,” Sweezey said. “I try not to say anything to them during the game. Just try to play hard and focus on the game.”

To a man, the surging Steel have followed similar protocol in recent weeks, although it hasn’t exactly stuck with fans and other USHL onlookers.

When a once-struggling club wins four straight and collects points in nine of 10 games, enthusiasm can’t hide under a bushel for long.

After playing seven of its nine November games at Fox Valley Ice Arena, the Steel will spend the majority of December away from home, beginning with a Friday-Saturday trip to Lincoln, Nebraska and Sioux Falls, S.D., respectively.

Lately, however, it’s not so much the locale as an evergreen mindset.

“Every week, we’re in a better place, I think, in terms of our mentality and how we approach each game,” coach Dan Muse said.

“If we get scored on, we can’t put our heads down. If we have a bad shift, we’ve got to go out there and get back to the winning details.”

Over the weekend, 18-yearold Czech goaltender Daniel Vladar provided the greatest constant in that formula, stopping 68 of 69 Fighting Saints shots, punctuating the run with Saturday’s shutout at Mystique Ice Center in Dubuque.

His teammates swarmed him at the end of both games, but the truth was, Vladar felt equally empowered – if not engulfed – simply by stepping on the ice with them again.

“I got rested, so I was so much better than before,” Vladar said. “The guys help me out. They knock out the shots.”

John Lethemon, a Michigan State recruit who is one year and five days Vladar’s senior, filled in capably. His first start during the stretch, a 3-2 overtime loss to visiting Bloomington, foreshadowed his own resilience, and that of the team.

Five days later, Lethemon limited the Thunder in a 3-1 victory that saw the defense allow 20 fewer shots than the earlier meeting.

“I know that we are a great team. I know that we haven’t had some luck from the beginning of the season, but right now, we are going and we are

getting better and better, and that’s important,” Vladar said.

The Steel credit the season’s natural progression and the steady influence of Muse, a 33-year-old who spent six seasons as a Yale assistant before joining the organization this summer.

Not everyone on the roster boasts USHL experience, but a young group has worked well to gain seasoning and acclimate to game speed.

“Obviously, it comes with time, you know. They’re jumping into new things,” said forward Marcel Godbout, the team captain. “Especially with some of the rookies who are in (high) school; they have to get acquainted to all that, and it can be hard at times.

But I think our guys are doing a good job of getting adjusted to the league, and they’re figuring out what it’s about.”

For the Steel, that includes making like Sweezey and acting like they’ve been here before.

When the NIU football team takes on Bowling Green in the Mid-American Conference Championship game at 7 p.m. Friday, the linemen will break the school record for most starts, surpassing former offensive lineman Trevor Olson’s 54.

“First off, you have to be really, really good players to start as redshirt freshmen, and they were,” NIU coach Rod Carey said. “Second thing, as they’ve grown and matured, they’ve learned how to keep care of their bodies in the offseason. They have to in order to take a beating in there. Also, being smart – I think when you’re a smart offensive lineman and you can anticipate what’s coming, I don’t think

you get yourself into as many bad positions where injuries can occur.”

Barring an injury, if Ness and Conlon start in the Huskies’ bowl game, that will make the record 56 – four consecutive years playing in 14 games.

“It’s been a fun ride with Andrew,” Conlon said. “And, honestly, I couldn’t tell you 10 games that I’ve started in because there’s been so many, but it’s easier with Andrew because he’s playing next to me, we’re in the same room, we’re watching film together. We’ve built up a routine.”

On Tuesday, Ness was named firstteam all-MAC for the second straight season, and joining him on the conference’s top squad was his brother-inarms Conlon. For Ness, knowing Conlon was matching him start-for-start helped him answer the bell each week.

“It’s a safety blanket,” Ness said.

“You know he’s thinking the same thing as you because we’ve been playing together for so long. We were room-

Offensive line coach Joe Tripodi said the two don’t focus on the gaudy number of consecutive starts. However, they take pride in the longevity and durability that comes with a streak

that they’re on.

“Especially O-linemen, we don’t have stats. We don’t have any of that,” Tripodi said. “The one thing they’re probably most proud of is they did it together. There’s an element of accountability there. They see the other and think, ‘He ain’t missing practice.’ It’s tough but they’re the toughest kids I’ve been around. To play that many games and have that streak, it’s awesome, but it’s testament to their toughness and their mental toughness. That’s what it becomes. You have to be mentally tough.”

Tripodi partially credits the athleticism and strong balance of the pair – the 6-foot-3, 314-pound Ness and the 6-3, 305-pound Conlon – for them staying relatively healthy in the four years.

But Ness boils down the secret for his longevity in simpler terms.

“Knock on wood a lot,” he laughed.

The first guy asked me for my phone number and asked if he could call me to set up a date. I politely told him I was seeing someone and not to call me. The other guy had also asked my friend for her phone number and she gave it to him.

Now my best friend has gone out with this guy more than half a dozen times and I hardly ever get time to talk to her because she doesn’t want to tie up her phone in case “Ken might call.” I only get to talk to her between classes at school because we have different lunch breaks. When we do talk, it’s all “Ken this, Ken that.”

Instead of feeling abandoned, get involved in school activities and seek the company of other students who might also become friends.

I knew about her reputation before I started dating her. I had gotten to know her because we had two classes together and she did not seem to match her “reputation.” On our first date, she brought it up and said she had a bit of a rocky past, but that she has changed and didn’t want to discuss her past. I told her I understood, and we had a great time on our date. She has a nice personality and I’m positive she has changed for the better because she acts like the

perfect lady when she is with me.

My problem is that some of the guys I know have taken her out and give me a bad time about going out with her. They think I’m only seeing her for one reason, but that is not true.

The reason I’m going out with her is that I find her to be an attractive and intelligent young lady and I’ve grown to care for her very much.

I can’t continue to be silent.

The way I look at it, I can do one of three things to satisfy my friends who keep asking me, “Why are you dating this girl?” or saying “I know why you are dating her!” First, I can tell them that I really care for her. Second, I can lie and tell them we’re sexually active and that I’ll drop her after a while.

65-year-old woman. My doctor says my bones are strong, and he wants to keep them that way. So, for years I’ve been taking a daily 1,200 milligram calcium supplement. Now I hear that might be too much. How much calcium do I really need?

Dear Reader: I’ve gotten this question from so many patients. As I assume is true for you, their bones have normal amounts of calcium.

That is, they do not have osteoporosis (or “thin bones”). To prevent osteoporosis, they have been taking the recommended amount of calcium -- 1,000 milligrams (mg) a day for women ages 50 and younger and 1,200 mg for women over 50 -- in an effort to preserve their bones.

It is true that the majority of studies show that a combination of calcium and vitamin D supplements reduce the risk of developing osteoporosis. So far, so good.

But the main reason to prevent osteoporosis is to reduce the risk of bone fractures. And most studies find that calcium supplements (or even calcium plus vitamin D) do not reduce that risk.

Worse, calcium supplements may even increase other health risks.

One study involved postmenopausal women enrolled in the Women’s Health Initiative trial.

Some 18,000 women were randomly assigned to take 1,000 mg of calcium and 400 international units (IU) of vitamin D each day. (Vitamin D works with calcium to build healthy bones.)

Another 18,000 women got placebo pills. After seven years, women who took calcium and vitamin D were no less likely to break their hips than the women who took a placebo pill.

Another study analyzed the results of more than a dozen studies. It found that women (and

Dear Abby: When I was 19 and played bass in a rock band, I fell in love with a guy I’ll call “Brian.” He was three years older and also a musician. We had the best times together – we were young and wild without a care in the world.

But the years rolled on and we got older. After six years together, I got pregnant.

I thought Brian would be thrilled, but he wasn’t.

It changed how I felt about him. I was heartbroken and lost respect for him.

I grew up fast, and put our son, “Ricky,” first. Brian, on the other hand, has refused to give up his rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle. He shows up to see Ricky two or three times a month, but doesn’t even look at him. I can’t stand the way he ignores our son. Brian says I can’t alter who and how he is. I say, if we mattered to him, he would change on his own.

This leads to arguments.

Which is worse – having my son grow up with an absent father who’s not “present” even when he’s here?

At the bridge table, you might have the choice of bidding a four-card or a five-card suit. Look at today’s North hand. After partner opens one club, would you respond one diamond or one spade?

In the old days, responder always bid the longest suit first. If partner had a four-card major, he would show it and a 4-4 fit would not be missed.

These days, showing the major first is in vogue. A columnist recommended bidding one spade, not one diamond, with that North hand. As you can guess, I disagree. I think bidding the major first is right if two criteria are satisfied: The responder has below game-invitational values and a good-quality major. This hand, with 10 points, two aces and a five-card suit, is worth a game-invitation. And that is not such a great spade suit. In this admittedly constructed deal, if North responds one spade, South will raise to two spades (which might be with only three-card support and a singleton somewhere), and what would North do then? Probably three diamonds, but it isn’t clear-cut with only four spades.

If North bids one diamond, South will rebid one spade, and four spades will be reached. Note that four spades

by North fails after East leads the heart queen. The defenders take one spade, two hearts and one club. But four spades by South is makable. West’s best lead is the club queen. Declarer wins with dummy’s ace, takes the two top trumps, then plays on diamonds, discarding a heart on the fourth round.

4 Catering to family dining room’s full plate

By ELIZABETH MAYHEW The Washington Post Fifteen years ago, when my husband and I moved into our apartment, I insisted on having a proper dining room. I had grandiose ideas of weeknight family meals with cloth napkins and china, followed on the weekends by candlelit dinner parties and festive holiday get-togethers. I was naive. I did not understand the changing needs of our growing family.

Seemingly overnight, our toddlers needed a place to do craft projects, then as grade-schoolers they needed a place to do homework, and now as teenagers, they need a place to hang out.

My life plan was unrealistic; my dining room design impractical.

That’s not to say I got everything wrong. And for the mistakes I made, well, like all decorating disasters, I will correct them over time. Plus,

I now have experience and hindsight I can share.

Here is my advice on getting a dining room you love, right from the beginning.

Paint

I painted our dining room a dark chocolate brown with white woodwork and have never felt the need to update or change it. The color is cozy, looks good with just about everything (flowers, china, linens) and wears well (you can just barely see the pen marks that my then-4year-old son made). Other tried-and-true paint colors for livable dining rooms are reds and corals because they complement most skin tones; people look good just sitting in them. Some of my favorite dining room colors: • Benjamin Moore’s Wood Grain Brown.

Lighting

Most rooms look best with several sources of ambient light, and nowhere is this more important than in the dining room. (You want yourself and your guests to look their best.)

In our dining room, I installed two pairs of sconces that provide pockets of light without overpowering the room. In general you should mount sconces so that the bulbs are about 5 1/2 to 6 feet high. Most sconce sockets won’t accept bulbs more than 40 watts, so the light will be less harsh. I prefer sconces with clip-on shades to soften the bulb’s glow.

From the beginning, I installed an overhead light, but I never got around to buying a chandelier. Instead, I have a flush-mounted fixture. This has worked to my benefit: A chandelier or a low-hanging fixture would have limited the flexibility of the room because

Transforming basements into wine cellars

By MICHELE LERNER Special to The Washington Post When Madelyn Smith moved to her newly built house in McLean, Va., she knew she couldn’t replicate the antique all-brick wine cellar tucked under a staircase in her previous home, but she needed specialized storage for the about 50 cases of wine she and her husband have bought.

“We buy in bulk for entertaining, and we had gotten used to having a special place to keep it,” she said.

Like most people who want a wine cellar, Smith opted to convert a storage room on the lower level to accommodate their wine.

Smith and her interior designer, Marika Meyer, owner of Marika Meyer Interiors in Bethesda, Md., wanted to incorporate a wood storage cabinet with interior lighting that Smith already owned into the wine cellar.

“We have an open-floorplan home now and that means there’s not a lot of solid wall space for things like our wood storage cabinet, so it was a great solution to put it in the bonus room as the starting point for the wine cellar,” Smith said.

Meyer said the rest of the house has bluestone on the exterior and on the fireplace hearths and mantels, so they brought that material into the wine room in the form of stone pillars to connect it to the rest of the house.

“We had a wall of glass custom-built at the front of the room to expand the sense of space and to make it visible off the billiards room,” Meyer said.

Whether you are a wine connoisseur who buys wine to store for years or entertain often and just need space to keep a few cases for a year or two, the most cost-effective place for wine storage is a basement.

“The best place for a wine cellar is not only in the basement but at the front of the house, which is usually the area of the basement that’s the deepest underground,” said Jim Rill, principal of Rill Architects in Bethesda. “You need a cool, insulated space with its own cooling system and ventilation system, almost like a heat pump that only cools the air.”

Rill said the cooling system doesn’t need to be used as often and doesn’t have to work as hard if the wine cellar is in

“The ideal temperature is 55 to 58 degrees, so the closer you can get to that, the less you have to spend for cooling,” said Doug Roberts, an architect with GTM Architects in Bethesda.

Wine cellars can be retrofitted into an existing home, but it’s easiest to design one for a custom home or newly built home, Roberts said.

“We start by asking the buyers how serious they are about wine collecting,” Roberts said.

“Someone who’s more of an amateur and not a hard-core collector may be satisfied with a wine refrigerator someplace or a basement bar. The more serious collectors want a walk-in cellar with wall-mounted wine racks and climate and humidity controls to protect the wine.”

Roberts said you can either connect the cellar to the home’s air handling system or buy a self-contained system. According to Wine Enthusiast.com, cooling units range from $1,000 to nearly $5,000, depending on the method of installation and the size of the room. Roberts recommends putting the wine cellar near a mechanical closet if possible in case the cooling system needs to run through the wall or needs a drainage area.

Meyer said buyers who don’t plan to store their wine for more

than a couple of years can opt for less costly storage systems.

“I’m working with one client to redo a butler’s pantry so he can store 1,000 bottles of wine underneath a counter,” Meyer said. “We’ve turned the counter into a wine tasting space.”

In addition to climate control, wine cellars need appropriate storage racks, which can range from costly custom-designed racks to mass market racks.

“We opted to order inexpensive wine racks online so we could spend more money on the masonry and stone in our wine cellar,” Smith said.

Mike Johnson, senior designer with Lori Graham Designs in Washington, worked with Spence and Renata Patterson, homeowners in Chevy Chase, Md., on their $27,700 wine cellar, which holds about 1,000 bottles.

“We never thought of ourselves as ‘wine cellar people,’ but when we renovated our home, we had the opportunity to outfit one of the basement rooms that at the time looked like a medieval dungeon into a fantastic wine storage and entertainment space,” Spence said. “One of the more interesting challenges of renovating a home built in 1916 is that you get to renovate around

some amazing thick and indestructible foundation walls.”

The 100-year-old massive rock walls provided the backdrop for the Pattersons’ cellar. The wine racks were custom-designed from old wine barrels with visible labels.

“You can actually feel the curve of the barrels if you run your hand over it,” Spence said.

Meyer worked with Smith to design her wine cellar so her inexpensive storage looks custom-designed.

“If you start with prefabricated storage shelves and then build around them, it feels as if the storage was designed just for that space,” Meyer said.

Smith opted to keep her wine room large so when her children are older she can add a table and chairs in the wine room for entertaining.

“Right now the billiards room is a playroom with space for building forts and for Thomas the Tank Engine, but someday we’ll formalize the whole area and the wine room will be ready for that phase,” Smith said.

Johnson’s design for the Pattersons included retaining the stone wall on one side of their basement and putting in a slate floor to help keep the space cool.

“We love to entertain in the wine room, especially since it’s a bit hidden,” Spence said.

“We like the space during extremes. On a hot August day, we can retreat down to the cellar and you’d never know it’s 100 degrees outside. In the winter, it’s a cozy place to open a big bottle of red with friends.”

One of Rill’s clients opted to convert a home theater room to a wine room designed for entertaining and storage.

“It’s designed to look like it was carved out of a mountain with stone walls, stone floors and stone niches,” Rill said. “The center island was built out of a couple of pieces of wood with the bark still on it for a rustic look.”

The wine room holds about 4,000 bottles of wine on custom-designed angled shelves so the labels can be displayed but the cork never gets dry, Rill said.

“The room curves like a bay window and has decorative doors that make you feel like you’re going into a castle,” Rill said.

“There’s room to sit and taste wine in the room or you can take bottles to the bar that’s nearby.”

Rill estimates the cost of the wine room was more than $100,000 because of the quality of the materials used along with the installation of climate and humidity control systems.

Homeowners who opt for a wine room and have traditional tastes tend to want a room with primarily stone and wood, Roberts said, while those who want something a little more modern add glass and metal to the space.

“One way to make the wine cellar the focal point of your lower level is to put it behind a bar with panels of glass and a glass door so you and your guests can see inside to the stone walls and wine racks even when the door is closed,” Roberts said.

More and more customers are requesting a wine room, particularly in larger homes with 5,000 to 7,000 finished square feet since those homes have an abundance of storage, Roberts said.

“In smaller homes, it works well to tuck a wine storage space under the stairs with racks and an interesting light fixture,” Roberts said. “Most customers want wine storage above all, and they aren’t necessarily looking for a wine tasting space.”

I love our dining table (Jasper Morrison’s Gamma Table for Cappellini). It’s perfectly proportioned for the room, but its white lacquer finish is too fragile for the daily wear and tear that it has received. The edges are chipped, and there are plenty of pen and pencil scratches on its surface. Someday I will replace it, most likely with a table that has a sealed-stone top. When choosing a table material, think about personal taste, but make sure you temper your decision with practicality.

But because we use the room for so many other activities besides eating, I felt the need to make the room cozier and more comfortable underfoot. I chose a Moroccan wool Berber area rug. It’s easy to clean, and the pattern disguises spills and crumbs.

Mirrors are especially appealing in dining rooms because they reflect candlelight and add to the overall ambiance, but mirrors also double your view. For example, we have only one window in our dining room, which isn’t really an issue if you’re primarily using your dining room at night, but we now use the room all day long, so sunlight is a luxury. I devoted one wall of our dining room to storage. Most dining rooms have too much space to not have some sort of storage unit. Look for a piece that is roomy but not gargantuan.

As for table shape, square and rectangular tables are well suited for the shape of most rooms (which is to say boxy), allowing the most table for the space, though circular models are more conductive to conversation.

By far the smartest lighting choice I made was to install dimmers on all light sources. I tend to do this in every room, but they’re essential in the dining room, where different purposes (kids doing their homework vs. eating Thanksgiving dinner) require varying amounts of light.
