Elburn board OKs $824K tax levy KANELAND CONNECTION Al Lagattolla ELBURN – Members of the Elburn Village Board on Monday unanimously approved the village’s tax levy of $824,000.

Doug Elder, the village’s finance director, noted the levy now has been at $824,000 for each of the last four years. As details had been hammered out in previous meetings, there was little discussion from board members before the levy vote. And there was no public comment or discussion during a public hearing portion of the

meeting.

Most of the levy – $759,669 – will go toward the general operating fund.

Any discussion from board members focused on the six special-service areas, with Trustee Jeff Walter asking questions about funding for specific areas. Elder said that will be a good question for the budget process, which he said will begin next month, rather than the levy process.

Trustee Pat Schuberg asked about the sixth special-service area, which will include the recently approved Elburn Station development.

That development is connected to the extension

of Anderson Road and a bridge that will cross over the Union Pacific tracks near the village’s Metra station.

While signs promoting Elburn Station are up in the village, the development is in the early stages, with Anderson Road work continuing at least through next year.

at the water remediation technology building on First Street, after a 10-inch pipe separated at the building.

Nevenhoven said he didn’t know what caused the incident, but he said there was a loss of about 210,000 gallons of water in about 30 minutes before the situation was brought under control. He said the situation involved equipment that removes radium from water, and he said the water that leaked already had been treated. He said there is temporary power at the site.

Kane County Judicial Center repairs coming in under budget

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The hundreds of problems with the Kane County Judicial Center’s mechanical systems are on their way toward being fixed – and at a cost that is under budget.

Operations Staff Executive Don Biggs on Tuesday told the Committee of the Whole that of the 449 issues identified earlier this year, about 320 are repaired.

And, he said, it appears the total cost will be under an initial estimate of $1,173,000.

The county this year has spent about $392,066, Biggs said, and next year’s anticipated costs are about $348,000.

If the estimates hold, that would bring the total costs to $740,066, he said.

Biggs credited the “tremendous savings” to doing much of the work in-house.

Additionally, he said, the county bought equipment directly from the manufacturer and had staff trained in HVAC operations and equip-

ment maintenance.

Board Chairman Chris Lauzen noted the lessons learned from this project: proper staffing, training and preventative and scheduled maintenance.

Board member Drew Frasz, R-Elburn, complimented Biggs on his team and noted that Biggs is celebrating his one-year anniversary with the county.

In other news, Biggs provided an update on the 2014 capital projects, which included improvements at the morgue.

Morgue renovations are done with the exception of installing the new freezer and refrigerator, he said. The hope is to reopen the facility by Jan. 1, he said, but the county is waiting for a delivery date from the manufacturer.

The morgue was closed in June after mold was found in and around the cooler and refrigerator area. The county since has outsourced forensic operations to DuPage County.

Christmas in Kaneville set for Friday, Saturday

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com KANEVILLE – Residents are invited to get into the holiday spirit this weekend at the Christmas in Kaneville two-day event.

“It’s a lot of fun, and if the weather holds out, it’s even better,” Kaneville Village President Pat Hill said.

The festivities begin at 7 p.m. Friday with the lighting of an 8-foot tree outside Hill’s Country Store, the “Purple Store,” at 2S133 Harter Road, Kaneville. Those interested may bring a handmade ornament representing a family or business.

The ornaments will be donated after the holidays to the Kaneville Township Historical Society for preservation, Hill said.

The store on Friday will provide hot chocolate, apple cider and treats. Then, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, the store will have a customer appreciation event with free hors d’oeuvres, peppermint ice cream and hot chocolate.

There will be a raffle and prizes for children, Hill said.

Events continue with a Cookie Walk from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Kaneville United Methodist Church, 46W764 Main St., Kaneville.

Cookies will be sold by the pound, and Hill recommends people come early because cookies might sell out by 11 a.m. Saturday.

ELBURN – The shuttered Papa G’s restaurant has a new real estate company on board to try to sell the building and parking lot at 250 S. Main St., Elburn.

Sperry Van Ness/Landmark Commercial Real Estate in Geneva signed on as the listing agent for Papa G’s in October, managing director Neil Johnson said.

“The lender/owner felt that it was important to use a national brokerage firm with a strong local presence,” Johnson said. “Our Sperry Van Ness office in Geneva was recommended to them as a good fit.”

A longtime eatery in Elburn, Papa G’s shut down in September 2013 because of too much debt coupled with a turndown in the market, a spokesman for the previous real estate firm had said earlier this year.

St. Charles man faces burglary charges

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A 24-yearold man faces felony charges on accusations he stole from unlocked cars in St. Charles, according to a city police report.

Tyler T. Kelley, of the 1200 block of Indiana Avenue, St. Charles, was charged Nov. 24 with three counts of burglary, a Class 2 felony, as well as possession of drug paraphernalia, a misdemeanor.

According to the report, his arrest stemmed from a report of a suspicious person who was walking up and down driveways in Tyler T. Kelley the 1200 block of Indiana Avenue about 1:30 a.m. Nov. 24. Told that the man was last seen behind an address that matched Kelley’s, police confronted him at home, police reported.

Kelley had a flashlight attached to his front belt loop, and his room contained several items – including sunglasses, pens, gift cards, playing cards and a camera – he said he took from vehicles that night, according to the report.

Kelley said he didn’t break into cars; rather, he entered only those that were unlocked, police reported.

He was taken to the Kane County Jail, where he remained in custody Tuesday on $50,000 bond, according to Kane County Sheriff’s Office records.

He is expected in court today.

Kane County court records indicate Kelley pleaded guilty in May to burglary, for which he received 36 months of probation and 34 days in jail with credit for 17 days served.

RICHARD L. HOPPE Born: Dec. 21, 1930 Died: Nov. 30, 2014 Richard “Dick” L. Hoppe, 83, of Batavia passed away Sunday, November 30, 2014, at Michealsen Health Care. Richard was born December 21, 1930, in Geneva, IL the son of Leo and Joyce (Wenmoth) Hoppe and lived his entire life in Batavia Illinois.

Dick was a proud graduate of Batavia High School class of 1948. He continued his education at Walton School of Commerce in Chicago and obtained his CPA. He then enlisted in the United States Army where he honorably served out his tour in Japan from 1951 until 1954. Dick was employed at Podolack, Hooper and Kerr as an Auditor until 1989. He was a lifelong follower of Batavia High School athletics and most of all a passionate fan of Bulldog Basketball.

Dick could be found without fail at every home game sitting in the end stands behind the basket.

He was an active member of the Batavia Masonic Lodge where he served as the treasurer for many years. In addition he was a member of the Batavia VFW and Calvary Episcopal Church. In his spare time he enjoyed traveling the world with his group of lifelong friends.

He is survived by his cousins, Jane Peterson of Chelsea, MI, Marie Koehn of Geneva, William (Mary) Rosenfelder of Geneva, Gerald Schroyer of Warrenville, Dale Nelson of Batavia and Carol (Don) Wilson of Port Charlotte, FL; his adored and loved God children, Terry Koehn of Geneva, Scott Rosenfelder, Lisa Ritchason, Todd Nelson, Mary Kate Rosenfelder

Susan R. Gorecki R.N. M.S.N., was born in Chicago to Edward and Mabel (Jastrzemski) Schalk. She grew up in Oak Lawn, Illinois and graduated in 1967 from Luther South High School.

She earned her Bachelor and Master of Science Degrees in nursing from Northern Illinois University School of Nursing. After receiving her bachelor Degree, Susan began her nursing career in the Labor and Delivery Department at Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn. When she and her husband moved to St. Charles she became an instructor in the NIU School of Nursing for five years.

Later she worked as a school nurse at St. Patrick’s Elementary School in St. Charles. For the past 14 years she has been employed by the Mid Valley Special Education District working with special needs children of all ages whom she dearly loved and who provided her with joy and fulfillment. She truly loved going to work each day to help care for her students.

Susan is survived by her husband of 43 years, John “Jack” Gorecki; and her loving children, Elizabeth (Paul) Hanna of Fife, Washington, Bryan (Fiancée Karin Keifer) of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Bradley of Denver, Colorado. She adored being a grandmother and will be greatly missed by her grandchildren Claire, Erin, James and Jill Hanna. In addition, she is survived by her brother, Edward (Gloria) Schalk of Decatur, Illinois; father-in-law, Edward Gorecki of St. Charles.

Judge allows Mooseheart student to play basketball

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com A Kane County judge decided Monday that a Mooseheart student from Congo can play for the school’s boys basketball team, but his path to the court is not cleared just yet.

Kane County Circuit Judge David Akemann ruled in favor of an injunction filed on behalf of 18-year-old Rodrigue Ceda Makindu. The injunction was against the Illinois High School Association for not allowing Makindu to play basketball. Akemann has stayed his order until 4:30 p.m. Dec. 8 to give any involved parties a chance to review the ruling in the event of an appeal.

Separate spokesmen for both the IHSA and Moose International on Tuesday said each organization plans to issue its own statements today or later this week on Akemann’s deci-

sion.

Makindu was happy to hear the judge’s decision, said Aurora attorney Judd Lofchie, who worked with attorneys Tom Olp and John Hayden to argue Makindu’s case. “[Makindu] said if he gets a chance, he will work really hard and hopefully get an athletic scholarship,” Lofchie said. “But if you can’t play, there’s no way you will get one.”

The IHSA in January 2013 approved a bylaw stating that international students attending school in Illinois who are not participating in an approved student exchange program “will not be eligible with respect to residence or transfer for the duration of their high school attendance unless they meet the requirements of the applicable provisions of the residency and transfer bylaws, as determined in an official

ruling from the executive director.”

Akemann on Monday wrote in his ruling that the IHSA fails to define what exactly is an international student.

“There is no showing that the fact that a student is classified as the undefined ‘international’ does not mean that he or she would be necessarily a better basketball player or would necessarily negatively affect competition by his or her participation,” Akemann wrote.

Akemann’s decision might open the door for other Mooseheart students, such as 5-foot-7 Remy Migisha and 7-foot-3 Bol Riek, to become eligible to play on the team, as well.

Mooseheart basketball coach Ron Ahrens confirmed that none of the students played in the first game of the season on Tuesday and referred to the forthcoming statement.

Tom left his teaching position at Kaneland to obtain a Masters Degree, later finding work at IBM. After twenty-five years, Tom left as a Senior Systems Engineer to work at Great Lakes Aqua Store in St. Charles.

Tom was proud lifetime member of the The Boy Scouts of America. He rose through the ranks, eventually teaching and leading both Batavia and Elburn Troops for twenty-five years.

Tom was a bicycle enthusiast who also loved to travel.

Whether it was backpacking, biking, driving, or flying, every destination was an adventure, but his favorite were his trips to the Northwest where the mountains called his name. In later years, Tom and Georgia brought along his grandchildren to share in Mother Nature’s wonder. He loved his family dearly, but his three granddaughters, and most

recently a great-granddaughter, had him wrapped around their little fingers. There was nothing that Tom would do for his “girls”.

He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Georgia; two children, Stephanie (Jeffrey) Miller and Joel (Cindy) Spalding; three granddaughters, Gabby Miller, Icy Miller and Nicole (Dave) Winston and their daughter, Lola; three siblings, Stephan (Carol) Spalding, Suzy (Jerry) Collins and Linda (Ed) Shaw; brother-in-law, Dave and Karen Proctor; sisterin-law, Denise Hamblen; many nieces, nephews and a family of friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Walter Sr. and Grace Spalding.

Visitation will be from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., with a funeral service to follow, on Saturday, December 13, 2014, at Conley Funeral Home, 116 W. Pierce St., Elburn, IL. Private family burial will follow cremation at a later date.

Tom grew up in Moweaqua, IL, and attended local schools. After graduating from Moweaqua High School in 1960, Tom attended Illinois State Teaching College. Later he would receive a Masters Degree in Math and Science from I.I.T. in 1968.

Tom became a teacher at Mooseheart, teaching alongside his own high school football coach. In 1965 he began teaching at Kaneland High School where his students learned to study and Tom learned how to fall in love.

What really makes lefties different

By PETER ORSZAG Bloomberg News When our son was born two years ago, my right-handed wife prayed he would be a lefty because she believed lefties were disproportionately talented. It seems he is left-handed, as am I and my older son, but new research suggests that may not carry the benefit my wife thought it would.

About 12 percent of people globally are southpaws. You’re more likely to be one if you’re male than female and if your mother was left-handed. Lefties’ brain structure and use appear to differ from righties. For example, the neural fibers connecting the left and right sides of the brain (the corpus callosum) are larger in lefties. And lefties differ in how the brain responds to language. But does belonging to the 12 percent bring some IQ or other benefit?

Along comes Joshua Goodman, an economist at Harvard’s Kennedy School, whose new analysis suggests left-handedness may generally be a curse rather than a gift.

He found lefties on average score lower on cognitive tests than righties, even after taking into account factors, such as their health as infants and family background.

Goodman also shows lefties earn about 10 to 12 percent less than righties, which is about equal to the earnings gain from an extra year of schooling. That gap comes in large part because “lefties have more emotional and behavioral problems, have more learning disabilities such as dyslexia, complete less schooling and work in occupations requiring less cognitive skill.” These findings come from five databases, three from the U.S. and two from Britain. What is most surprising in the new research is the picture at the top end of the skills distribution. Previous studies have found lefties to be more likely among very high scorers on the SAT, and more likely to have an IQ above 131. Goodman, however, finds lefties in the U.S. are less likely to be in the top 10 percent of cognitive skills. And they are no more likely to be higher earners than righties. One of the most intriguing findings from Goodman’s research is that the lefty disadvantage applies only to those born to right-handed mothers. Lefties born to left-handed mothers have outcomes similar to righties. What could explain that? Here’s one clue: Right-handed children of left-handed mothers experience adverse effects that are similar to left-handed children of right-handed mothers, according to Goodman’s findings. It’s possible that learning to mimic one’s mother in early learning is more challenging when handedness differs between mother and child. (Women thus face two risks from being a southpaw: their own prospects may suffer, and their children are likely to be right-handed, with its own disadvantages.)

All of which suggests that expectant mothers shouldn’t wish for their children to be lefties. For the record, Goodman is a righty.

Drivers with the appropriate physical damage insurance coverage can share repair costs with an insurance company. A deer hit is a compre-

hensive claim, if there is actual contact with the animal. Without this, the loss is a collision claim. Vehicle owners should be familiar with their auto insurance policy coverages and deductibles.

The Illinois Insurance Association encourages drivers to be alert, know how to respond when deer are sighted along the roadway and prepare for the financial consequences of a crash.

Coach brings worldly experience to Tri-Cities

oco Wesseh internalized the principles of the give-and-go as a men’s soccer standout at Judson University, and now shares his own spin as a Tri-Cities Soccer Association coach.

Early in the journey, he learned the strategy was better suited for sports. His off-field ambitions are far more grounded.

Wesseh’s current endeavors hinge on his charitable vision for his native Liberia, but he assures his One Goal Foundation isn’t going anywhere. Fueled by fundraiser camps around the Tri-Cities, the third-year organization is building toward developing a school just outside the Liberian capital of Monrovia while providing education, food, supplies and soccer training to the region’s youth.

Much as in a match destined for extra time, Wesseh, 35, takes a long view of the work that’s been done and what is still to come in western Africa.

“When you talk about reward, I don’t see it as rewarding yet, because to me, I haven’t really achieved anything yet; I’m trying to achieve,” Wesseh said. “I’ll know if I achieve if I can get a kid into the school, learning free, and then having an opportunity to come here to go to school, too, and see what’s here, and then be able to go back to start the same thing I started in another neighborhood so other kids can have that kind of opportunity. If that happens, then that’s the reward I want.”

Volunteer Linda Pinto of West Chicago, who like many embraced the uplifting story of her children’s refugee soccer coach to aid in the effort, estimates the foundation will have raised about $100,000 in the past two years by the time 2014 ends.

IRS, making it a tax-exempt, nonprofit organization. Apart from independent giving, its biggest donations come via youth soccer camps, including winter sessions at Batavia’s HC Storm Elementary School gymnasium.

Wesseh operates four weekly camps – limited to 10 players a session to optimize athlete attention – on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays through March, in addition to a Saturday conditoning camp. Wesseh aims to keep costs affordable, knowing he “wouldn’t feel right” exploting the pasttime that helped him survive in his war-torn homeland during the tumultuous 1990s and early 2000s.

He spends much of the rest of the time coaching and instructing for St. Charlesbased TCSA, where he has worked for four years. Days off are few and far between for Wesseh, a reality he hardly laments. He passes much of his daily commutes from Morris communicating with those on One Goal’s Liberian front or planning his next moves

Tri-Cities hoops teams starting quick Early indications point to plenty of hoops success among Tri-Cities basketball teams this winter after both boys and girls teams mostly fattened up on Thanksgiving tournament week competition.

Much more will be known as soon as this weekend – Batavia and Geneva and St. Charles East and St. Charles North each play girls-boys doubleheaders Saturday – but we’ve already seen enough to confirm this should be a fun winter of hoops.

Geneva claimed girls and boys tournament titles, with the boys team securing double-digit victories in each of its four games at the Crystal Lake Central tournament.

Since Friday’s originally scheduled Geneva-St. Charles North boys game was pushed to February, the Vikings’ next test will be archrival Batavia on Saturday. Geneva’s 4-0 record is no surprise given the Vikings’ exceptional size and recent track record, but Batavia’s matching 4-0 record turns some heads.

PREP ZONE Jay Schwab The Windmill City Classic field isn’t exactly loaded but the Bulldogs had to go through some decent opposition – particularly St. Francis and Wheaton Warrenville South – to win its own tournament for the first time since 2009. The Bulldogs appear to have a deep bench that will give coach Jim Nazos options he hasn’t had in his first two seasons on the job.

With just one week to bounce back from Saturday’s 70-49 shellacking at the hands of East in the Ron Johnson tournament third-place game, it’ll be interesting to see how quickly North coach Tom Poulin can rally his team ahead of this weekend’s rematch.

While North (2-2) is the lone Tri-Cities boys team to have lost twice last week, a win against tournament runner-up Plainfield East reinforced that the North Stars

have plenty of upside, provided they can find ways to compensate for their lack of size. The Saints, meanwhile, have plenty to build on from their 3-1 tournament run, with their lone loss a competitive, six-point defeat against star-studded St. Joseph.

If Batavia was the Tri-Cities’ surprise boys team during the Thanksgiving tournaments, that designation goes to St. Charles East on the girls side. The high-scoring Saints were impressive at Schaumburg, with a loss against powerhouse Stevenson being East’s lone misstep.

The North girls brushed aside an opening loss to close strong at the Pontiac tournament, and with North’s size and experience, coach Sean Masoncup’s team is primed for a breakthrough season.

Despite the early success from the improving St. Charles girls squads, Geneva – a Class 4A state semifinalist last year – did nothing to alter its familiar, team-tobeat status after winning the Glenbard East tournament.

The Vikings are set in the

frontcourt with proven performers such as Grace Loberg, Janie McCloughan and Abby Novak, and it’ll be interesting to see how the Vikings’ retooling backcourt evolves.

Considering the quality of the aforementioned trio, Batavia will have difficulty defending its co-UEC River title, but the Bulldogs have another conference player of the year candidate on their hands in junior forward Hannah Frazier.

So far, Frazier is averaging 26.8 points to go with 12.8 rebounds. To graduate a player capable of scoring 30-plus points on any given night (Liza Fruendt) and have another waiting in the wings is quite the feat. But double and triple teams for Frazier will be the norm. How much help Frazier’s teammates can offer is the Bulldogs’ burning question.

By then, Wesseh had befriended a Christian missionary couple from St. Paul, Minnesota, which helped him get back in school and eventually earn a partial scholarship to Malone University in Canton, Ohio.

Wesseh left Malone, but soon joined the semipro Chicago Eagles, whose coach, Steve Burke, also leads the Judson program.

College life overwhelmed Wesseh in a positive way. He sometimes flashes back to the humbling sight of a dining hall bursting with food.

Another recollection: the day

“I’m very thankful and grateful that I’m here. I’m satisfied with what I’m getting. I mean, I struggle financially here and there, and I know everybody [does], but at least I can have here.”

Doco Wesseh, Tri-Cities Soccer Association coach he broke his shyness during a class to tell others about his background. Their attentiveness helped Wesseh realize he might use his background to benefit others.

“I would sit there in class and never say a word because I felt I didn’t have anything to offer,” Wesseh said. “So things changed a whole lot for the good.”

Years before One Goal grew to its current state, Wesseh asked Burke for any old Judson jerseys and equipment he could spare. There was no speculation; Burke knew his star forward’s background and intent.

Wesseh played in Thunder Bay, Ontario, for a top North American U23 amateur league in the mid-2000s before returning to Illinois.

He joined TCSA and soon rediscovered a yearning to help children not only in his new home, but his homeland, too.

The foundation recently purchased five acres of land about 10 miles outside Monrovia for the future site of the One Goal Academy. Wesseh returns home when he can, ideally once each during the summer and winter. His recent visit around Liberia’s July 26 independence day

came amid the outbreak of the Ebola virus in western Africa.

“I’m very thankful and grateful that I’m here,” Wesseh said. “I’m satisfied with what I’m getting. I mean, I struggle financially here and there, and I know everybody [does], but at least I can have here.”

TCSA president Bob Geiken, whose organization has sponsored One Goal from the start, calls Wesseh “incredibly genuine” and “absolutely a great guy.”

In Liberia, the approximately 1,500 children benefit from One Goal aid each year.

“I think that’s the most touching part, is to realize how much difference comes in the small things we do here,” Pinto said.

The gifts keep coming. As long as Wesseh is around, the goodwill is unlikely to leave.

What does the team take away from its finish at the tournament?

There were a lot of positives for us. We obviously went 3-1, but even in the loss we did some good things. It was a good team we lost to [eventual champion St. Joseph], and now we know what it’s going to take to beat those really good teams. We didn’t go 4-0, but we were able to take some positives from those games, break it down a little bit. … It’s always good to see some quality opponents before

conference play starts.

What did you see from your individual game?

There’ s always things from Coach [Pat] Woods and Coach [Craig] Wolf, our assistant. He’s really good with breaking down film with me and helping me with reads on my pick and rolls. … It’s good to have that game film to watch yourself and see what you’re doing right and doing wrong and what to do to help me improve.

Have you seen video of Austin’s half-court shot? [Note: East senior Austin Regelbrugge made a half-court shot for $200 during halftime of the season opener].

We were in the team room and all of a sudden there was this big [noise]. Everybody starts screaming … We were a little confused. … We walk out and somebody went right to the student section and asked who made the shot. ... It’s cool. There’s not a great chance to get picked anyway, and then to make it, it’s pretty impressive.

GIRLS GYMNASTICS SEASON PREVIEW

St. Charles team poised to reload

By KEVIN BEESE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – A young St. Charles co-op girls gymnastics team has its sights set on a third consecutive trip to the IHSA state meet.

With only two seniors, the squad will be looking for underclassmen to make an impact. Coach Amy Lill expects that to be exactly what happens as the season progresses.

“We have a lot of depth in each event,” Lill said of the 16-member squad. “Whatever event it is, I expect girls to step up.”

After losing seven graduated seniors from last year’s

team, it could be expected that the team would be in rebuilding mode, but Lill thinks the assembled co-op of St. Charles North and St. Charles East gymnasts should not fall short of making it to the state meet for a third straight time.

“I see no reason that we shouldn’t be able to perform and get there once again,” Lill said.

After back-to-back appearances in the state finals, the St. Charles team members are starting to become familiar faces at the state meet. Seniors Jordan McQuade and Raquel Favia don’t want to see that stop in their swan songs with the squad.

Neither gymnast expects to compete at the collegiate level next year. McQuade will likely be going to Bradley University and not participating in gymnastics. Favia is still undecided on colleges, but might be interested in doing club gymnastics at school.

Both senior vault specialists are impressed with the camaraderie shown with the squad so far.

“We have a lot of positivity,” Favia said of the squad’s chemistry even before the season begins.

McQuade said she and Favia have an easy job on their hands in leading the squad.

Each Tri-Cities team but Batavia promoted at least one freshman to the varsity this season. Chances are, opposing players and coaches were aware of that news shortly after rosters were finalized.

“It’s just sort of how basketball is, and that’s no different with the guys, either,” said second-year St. Charles North coach Sean Masoncup, a former assistant in the boys program. “That’s one similar thing I’ve noticed: that when somebody moves a level, it’s usually heard about pretty quick.”

Just a few days into preseason practice, there was Masoncup plotting for a St. Charles East frontcourt he had just heard would include 6-foot freshman forward Sara Rosenfeldt.

Also a teacher at Haines Middle School, Masoncup might be more in tune with the up-and-comers than many of his brethren.

His team features 6-2 freshman center Anna Davern, who could tangle in the paint with Rosenfeldt when the Saints

Lill, an English teacher at St. Charles North, forgets at times that the team is composed of girls from two different schools.

“They are all my girls,” Lill said of the squad.

Although deep talentwise,

the squad’s numbers are down from years past. After averaging 20 to 25 girls in years past, this year’s squad of 16 is more to Lill’s liking.

“There are teams with 40 girls. I don’t know how they do it,” Lill said. “Sixteen is a perfect number. I don’t have to worry about splitting the team. The girls get to do the events they want to do. It is good to have a small number.”

Root canal surgery does not deserve its bad reputation Dear Doctor K: I have to have a root canal. What will happen during this procedure?

Dear Reader: You brush your teeth twice a day, but you probably don’t know their inner workings.

Every tooth has roots that anchor it to the jawbone. Inside the body of the tooth and inside its roots is a hollow central chamber, or canal.

And inside that hollow chamber is an inner pulp containing a network of nerves, blood vessels and tissues. The pulp helps nourish your tooth. The nerves in the pulp are the reason that injury or damage near the pulp causes pain.

Pulp damage can cause a range of symptoms, including tooth sensitivity, pain, swelling or tenderness of the gums. Pulp damage can also cause cracked or discolored teeth, nerve death and infection.

Among the common causes of pulp damage are tooth decay and advanced gum disease, which can produce infection in and around the teeth. A bacterial infection in the pulp usually kills the nerves, and the infection can spread to the gum and mouth tissues and beyond.

Root canal therapy removes damaged or diseased pulp and seals off the inner chamber that

The process usually takes two to three office visits. During the first visit, the endodontist (a dentist who specializes in problems with dental pulp and nerves) will inject a local anesthetic. He or she will drill a hole in your tooth and remove the decayed or diseased pulp.

The endodontist will clean the root canal, removing bacteria, tooth fragments and tissue. An antiseptic (and sometimes also antibiotics) will be injected into the pulp chamber to kill remaining bacteria.

The root canal and pulp chamber will be dried, then filled with a permanent filling material.

This material replaces the pulp.

After the root canal treatment is complete, your dentist will place an amalgam (a filling) or composite restoration, a crown,

or both on your tooth. This will protect and strengthen your tooth and help maintain its structure. Premolars and molars in particular should be crowned after root canal therapy to prevent the tooth from breaking.

The best way to keep pulp damage at bay is to brush your teeth and floss twice a day. And don’t forget regular visits to your dentist for more thorough cleanings.

I’ve had several root canals.

Before my first one, I was very apprehensive. So many people (including plenty who’ve never had it) talk about root canal surgery as if it’s terribly painful.

They say things like, “Seeing the Red Sox end up at the bottom of the division hurt me less than a root canal!”

In my experience, a root canal doesn’t hurt any more than other dental procedures. But seeing the Red Sox go from first to worst in one year, on the other hand – that really hurt.

Student wants to stay put Dr. Wallace: I’m a senior in high school here in Orlando, and have gone to school here ever since I started in kindergarten. I really love my school and teachers, and I have a lot of friends here. I’m involved in lots of activities, too.

My problem is that my dad has told me that he has been promoted to a manager position and will be transferred to Miami in January. This is a great opportunity for my dad, and we have already put our house up for sale. But for me, it means I would have to leave everything that is familiar to me and start over at a new school in Miami.

My best friend’s parents have told me and my parents that I would be welcome to stay with them until I graduate with my class. That would be only about 20 weeks, and then I could join my parents for the summer. Then I will be going to the University of Florida in Gainesville next fall. It seems to be a good solution for me.

My parents are leaving this decision up to me, but they have indicated that they would prefer that I move to Miami with them in January. I had spent three and a half wonderful high school years with my friends and teachers when my mother informed me that my dad had been transferred and the family had to move.

Since I didn’t want to graduate from a new high school, I had a long chat with my mom. I told her that it was possible for me to live with a friend’s family for the four months it took to graduate. Reluctantly, Mom agreed. A week later, my parents met with my friend’s parents and together they set down the rules and regulations I had to abide by.

I was soon accepted by my “new family,” and I earned my keep. I helped with the chores, shopping, cooking, cleaning and even volunteered to help their young son with his school studies. His parents noticed an improvement in his grades and were deeply appreciative.

Naturally, I missed my family, but the four months went by rapidly.

We see suit combinations at the bridge table every day. Most we have met before, but even then a few are misplayed with a fair frequency. In today’s deal, South is in three no-trump. After West leads the heart queen and East plays the king, what should declarer do?

South has eight top tricks: one spade, one heart, three diamonds and three clubs. The ninth trick might come from hearts if they are splitting 3-2. So South should duck the first trick. Here, East will shift, presumably to a diamond.

Declarer wins and cashes his heart ace to get the bad news.

So he needs two spade tricks.

In isolation, what is the best play?

One should play first to the nine (hoping West has the jack and 10), then, if the nine loses to the 10 or jack, lead to the queen (hoping West has the king). This is exactly a 63 percent chance, but does not work here.

Instead, there is a much better play. South should cash a second high diamond and a couple of rounds of clubs. When everyone follows, declarer should take his third club and third diamond.

Then he plays a spade to dummy’s nine (or covers West’s 10 with dummy’s queen). East wins and cashes a winner or two, but then must lead away from the spade king (or jack) into dummy’s acequeen (or ace-nine).

Watch out for this endplay position with A-Q-10 or A-Q-9 opposite low cards.
