Choir group to perform Christmas concert in Dec. ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Singers will present a Christmas concert, “Candlelight Carols: Carols and Anthems of the Season,” at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Fourth Presbyterian Church, North Michigan Avenue at East Delaware Place, Chicago; at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Baker Memorial United Methodist Church, 307 Cedar Ave., St. Charles; and at 3 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 8, at Baker Memorial in St. Charles.

The program will include four songs arranged for choir and guitar, the first time that instrument has made an appearance at a St. Charles Singers Christmas concert. Guest artist will be classical guitarist Goran Ivanovic.

Subway suspect charged in North Aurora robbery KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com NORTH AURORA – A man who was charged last month in connection with several area robberies, including one at Subway in St. Charles, has been charged in connection with a robbery in North Aurora, according to police.

The North Aurora Police Department on Monday issued a news release stating that charges are pending against Rodney W. Boyette, 50, of the 400 block of Standish Street, Elgin, in relation to an aggravated robbery Oct. 31 at Jun’s Mobil, 329 S. Lincolnway, North Aurora.

Police said patrol officers

were called to the gas station at 6:48 p.m. for a report of a robbery.

The suspect handed the clerk a note that said, “have gun hand over cash,” and the clerk complied, police said. Police are not releasing the amount of cash handed Rodney W. over.

Boyette Following the robbery, police became aware of other similar incidents in South Elgin, St. Charles, Cary and Carpentersville, and the suspect in each case was described similarly to the suspect in the North Aurora

crime, police said.

After police consulted with the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office, Boyette was charged with aggravated robbery, a Class 1 felony; robbery, a Class 2 felony; and theft, a Class A misdemeanor in connection with the North Aurora incident.

Boyette faces similar charges in connection to a robbery at Subway in the 500 block of Randall Road, St. Charles, police said in late November.

Police responded to the restaurant Nov. 3 when a subject entered Subway, implied he had a weapon, demanded money and fled on foot with an undetermined amount of cash, police said.

Driver in fatal crash sued

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com The man who admitted last month to having heroin in his system during a fatal February car crash is being sued by the brother of the boy he killed, according to court documents filed with the Kane County Circuit Clerk’s Office.

A case management conference is set for 9 a.m. Feb. 6, at the Kane County Courthouse in Geneva. Judge James Murphy is assigned to the case.

On Feb. 27, Benjamin Black, now 29, was driving a Ford Expedition on Route 64 in Virgil Township when he smashed into the back of a Chevrolet Cavalier that was stopped because of another crash more than a mile away.

Eleven-year-old Matthew Ranken, a passenger in the Cavalier, died from his injuries. His brother Nick Weber, now 22, was driving.

On Nov. 21 – a week after Black pleaded guilty to charges from the fatal crash –

Weber filed a lawsuit against him. The lawsuit accuses Black of failing to keep proper lookout, failing to decrease his speed to avoid an accident, driving too fast for conditions and, among other infractions, driving while impaired.

Weber is Benjamin seeking damBlack ages in excess of $50,000, according to the lawsuit. It cites his medical expenses; physical and emotional pain and suffering and distress; loss of income; and loss of a normal life.

The lawsuit notes Matthew also was survived by his parents and two other brothers, ages 18 and 14. As a result of the boy’s death, the lawsuit states, “his next of kin have and will continue to suffer extreme grief, mental suffering and will suffer the loss of consortium, society, love, affection, guidance, companionship, felicity,

among other losses.”

For that, Weber is seeking “in excess of the minimum jurisdictional limit of the law division of Kane County, Illinois, plus costs,” according to the lawsuit.

A sentencing hearing for Black’s criminal charges is set for March 20. Kane County Circuit Judge James Hallock could sentence Black to between three and 14 years in prison for aggravated driving under the influence.

Probation would be an option only if Hallock found extraordinary circumstances existed.

Celebration of Lights Festival highlighted by visit from Batavia’s football team

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Despite the chilly weather, the Batavia Bulldogs football team received a warm welcome Sunday evening as a short parade ushered them into the Celebration of Lights Festival.

Crowds cheered on the Bulldogs amid emergency vehicle sirens, shouting their congratulations for winning the Class 6A state championship Saturday in DeKalb.

Before the lighting ceremony, Mayor Jeff Schielke commended the team – many of whom were wearing Santa hats – saying he was honored and proud that they attended the festival. Schielke also applauded the coaching staff.

“You bore some very productive fruit,” he said.

Batavia coach Dennis Piron thanked everyone for Saturday’s “incredible turnout” at Huskie Stadium at Northern Illinois University, where Batavia beat Richards, 34-14.

“These are very good boys.

They worked very hard,” Piron said. “They played with passion, energy and enthusiasm.”

Sunday night’s festival also marked the debut of the newly formed Batavia Communi-

ty Band, which Schielke said is made up of many Batavia High School graduates. Gary and Sharon Goeden of Batavia said the new band was one of the reasons they decided to attend the Celebration of Lights Festival.

“Our son would have loved to be in it,” said Sharon Goeden, who noted that her son plays trumpet and is away from home attending college.

“We think it’s a great idea to have a community band.”

Other festival attendees,

such as the Petersen family, were looking forward to seeing Santa Claus.

Ryan and Amy Petersen attended the festival for the first time with their children, Luke, 7, who planned to ask Santa for a Kindle Fire; and Abbey, 4, who said she would be asking Santa for a Barbie camper.

“This is actually our second year in Batavia,” Ryan Petersen said. “Part of [attending the festival] is just to enjoy both the football rally and the holiday cheer.”

Parade electrifies St. Charles Families crowd streets to see annual Electric Christmas event

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Long before the street lights went out and the tree lights came on, before the first flashing lights of a police car, parade-goers staked out their territory for the St. Charles Electric Christmas Parade.

Saturday night saw both sides of Main Street packed with children and adults of all ages, from babies to toddlers on their daddy’s shoulders to grandmothers in motorized wheelchairs.

Also filing in a contest for the Republican nomination for Michael Donahue’s District 11 seat are John Martin and Thomas Matson, both of Geneva. Donahue said he would not seek another term.

Republicans Mark Davoust and incumbent Jack Cunningham filed for county clerk and Kevin Williams and Donald Kramer filed for sheriff as Sheriff Pat Perez is not seeking another term.

District 303 to conduct parent satisfaction survey KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – St. Charles School District 303 is encouraging parents to participate in its parent satisfaction survey, which will take place from Dec. 10 through Dec. 17.

The anonymous survey takes about 10 to 15 minutes to complete and will be available at district.d303.org beginning on Dec. 10, according to a news release from the district.

Parents are asked to complete one survey for each one

of their children who attends a District 303 school, and the survey differs based on whether a student is attending elementary, middle or high school. All versions of the survey will be available in English and Spanish.

The annual survey will feature a range of topics, including teachers, curriculum, instruction, principals, administration, buildings and food service.

“The parent satisfaction survey gives parents the opportunity to evaluate the range of services District 303 provides and also gives

district administration valuable feedback on our efforts to meet the needs of our students and our community,” said Mark Pomplun, District 303 executive director of assessment, in a news release.

“We have had record levels of participation by parents in the survey each of the last two years and would like to set another record this year.

As the participation numbers increase, so does the accuracy of the data gathered.”

NAPLES, Fla. – Mary Ellen (Corrigan) Gaffney, 87, of Naples, Fla., passed away Sunday evening, Nov. 17, 2013 surrounded by the love and prayers of her family. She passed away peacefully at her home after several years of battling cancer.

Mary Ellen was born in Aurora to Frank J. and Dora L. Corrigan. She had three brothers, James, Jerome and Joseph. She and her family attended Holy Angels Catholic Church in Aurora; and Mary Ellen later attended Madonna Catholic High School in Aurora, graduating in 1944.

Mary Ellen met Charles J. Gaffney of St. Charles during high school and they later married in 1948. Charles and Mary quickly settled in St. Charles and began raising a family. Mary Ellen thoroughly enjoyed her role as wife and mother, as well as assisting her husband’s endeavors in the business world. She was always quick to love, listen and provide encouragement to all of her children and friends. She thoroughly loved St. Charles, her involvement with Legion Post 342, the Woman’s Club of St. Charles and also serving as a Boy Scout den mother.

She was involved daily with all of her children’s school activities, attending nearly all musical, theater and sporting events. She was employed for several years at Frazier, Raftery, Orr & Fairbank Architects in Geneva, and also with the Trust Department, Barnett Bank of Naples.

She loved all of the Chicago sports teams, especially the Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears, and often traveled to attend games with her children.

Mary Ellen is survived by her loving children, Susan (Drew Ely) of Temple Terrace, Fla., Judy Malecot, of Naples, Fla., Kevin J. (Jane) Gaffney of St. Charles and Tricia

(Cory) of Cape Coral, Fla. She leaves behind 14 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Jerome; her former husband, Charles J. Gaffney of Naples, Fla.; a daughter who died in birth; and most recently, a son, Charles J. Gaffney III, who died in October 2013.

A memorial service was held Nov. 22 at Hodges Funeral Home, Memorial Gardens, Naples, Fla. Cremation and burial will be in December. Another memorial for her friends and relatives will be Thursday, July 31, 2014 at Pottawatomie Park (Gaffney Field) in St. Charles, a place she loved and also considered home. Her family encourages all who loved and enjoyed being with Mary Ellen to attend and share their memories.

Both Mary Ellen and her son, Charles J. Gaffney, will be honored and remembered Thursday, July 31, 2014. A Mass for both will be celebrated July 31 at St. Patrick’s Church in St. Charles.

8POLICE REPORTS Kane County • A paver brick was reportedly thrown through a garage window in the 39W300 block of Woodgate Road, Campton Hills, between 6 p.m. Nov. 22 and 2 p.m. Nov. 23.

Replacement costs were estimated at $200.

• A homeowner in the 1200 block of Woodland Avenue, Batavia Township, reported Nov. 26 that several items were missing from her house after a rent-to-own situation ended after the renter told her he wouldn’t be buying the home. The missing items were a $1,000 invisible fence control panel, a $450 electronic circuit board for outdoor lighting, an $800 washer and dryer, three storage shelving units valued at $125 and 12 drape rods valued at $200.

• A residential burglary was reported Nov. 27 in the 4N200 block of Pioneer Court, Campton Hills. Someone apparently forced the front door open between 8:15 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. that day, damaging the door and deadbolt.

Nothing was reported missing.

It was believed the offender was scared off by a door chime and voice recording.

• Comcast utility wires were reported damaged Nov. 30 in the 6N600 block of Foley Lane, St. Charles Township. Replacement costs were estimated at $800.

• A brick mailbox was reported damaged Dec. 1 in the 36W800 block of Red Gate Court, St.

• Lloyd M. Da Mask Sr., 82, of the 7N700 block of Route 47, Maple Park, was charged Nov. 20 with domestic battery and interfering with the reporting of domestic violence.

• Two trash cans were reported stolen Nov. 26 from the 7N300 block of Whispering Trail, St. Charles Township.

• A glass window on the main floor of a house in the 4S300 block of Harter Road, Sugar Grove, was reportedly shot out Nov. 26 by a BB gun pellet. The window was valued at $279.

• A home in the 39W500 block of Longmeadow Lane, Campton Hills, received two phone calls Nov. 27 from someone claiming to be a police officer. The caller claimed there was an arrest warrant for the resident, who hung up. When the caller called back, the resident asked for the caller’s name, badge number and police department.

The caller didn’t provide the information.

• A resident of the 38W300 block of Henricksen Road, St. Charles Township, reported Nov. 23 that a vehicle drove through his front yard, causing $400 in damage to his sod.

• A Maple Park resident reported Nov. 20 that someone had stolen $1,500 and a book of checks from him somewhere between his home and South Dakota, where he recently traveled.

The open house will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday in the Carnegie Community Room at the St. Charles Public Library, 1 S. Sixth Ave., St. Charles. The public is invited to attend.

Brown has been with the library for 39 years and will retire at the end of this year. During the open house, Mayor Ray Rogina will read a proclamation to note Brown’s dedication and leadership to the community.

Efforts to support dark skies initiatives at night have helped somewhat, he said, as the lights on Randall Road are equipped with zero or full cutoff fixtures.

“Zero cutoff fixtures cut off the light that goes up into the sky,” Christensen said. “Any light that goes up is pollution and wasted. ... Zero cutoff fixtures put the light on the ground, where it is supposed to be.”

“Learn from the Experts” programs are co-presented by the Forest Preserve District of Kane County along with the St. Charles and Geneva park districts.

The Fox Valley Astronomical Society also will host a free, public star party at 7 p.m. Saturday, also at Peck Farm Park, on “Asteroid Hunters.”

District 304 financial plan stirs levy discussion

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – As Geneva District 304 officials consider the district’s finances, financial planner Stephen Miller of PMA Financial Network presented a five-year financial plan at a recent school board meeting.

Miller’s presentation included a projection that the consumer price index for 2014 would rise to 2 percent and then to 2.5 percent for future years.

The consumer price index for the 2013 levy is 1.7 percent, but at an earlier meeting, the board majority voted for a recommended levy increase of 1 percent. Board member Mike McCormick voted against it, saying he favored a 0 percent increase on the levy.

Miller said other school districts PMA works with are talking about levying less than the consumer price index.

Board member Leslie Juby said if they levy enough money, officials can give it back to taxpayers through abatements on debt.

“If we don’t levy, we have less to abate back and we probably have less money in the future, [which will] push us to make more difficult decisions,” Juby said.

“By reducing the operating levy, it reduces your future ability to reach your operating levels, because it always builds on the prior year,” Miller said.

“If we levy less, we never get it back – it’s gone,” Assistant Superintendent for Business Donna Oberg said. “If you lose $2 million the first

year, in five years you lose $10 million ... you lose your whole levying power to run the district.”

McCormick said he was talking about a levy reduction in the short term.

Miller also projected the equalized assessed value of the district’s taxable property would go down 3.47 percent for 2013, down again 2 percent for 2014 and be at 0 percent for 2015.

The district’s EAV is projected to increase again by 2016 to 2 percent, and then 3 percent in 2017 and 2018, Miller said.

New growth is projected to be at $12 million for 2014 and 2015, which is significant because it is not restricted by the tax cap. Miller projected new growth will continue to $15 million in each year for 2016, 2017 and 2018.

Forum’s focus: All-day kindergarten, common core

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Apparently, all-day kindergarten in Geneva District 304 will be a foregone conclusion, officials said, as Illinois lawmakers are expected to make it mandatory by 2016.

Still, parents Jennifer and Matthew Cox told school board members at a forum Monday they supported allday kindergarten.

“We have a kindergartner there right now at Heartland now and a son who will be going there in a few years,” Jennifer Cox said. “We have found that it’s such a rigorous program. It’s only 2 ∏ hours ... and there’s so much to learn.”

Officials scheduled the forum to allow parents to talk about all-day kindergarten, common core curriculum, communication and anything else they wanted.

Resident Sandra Ellis questioned why there was a discussion when it seemed to be “almost a done deal.”

“It is premature to have a forum if you do not know the cost of it,” said Ellis, a member of TaxFACTS, a local property tax watchdog group. “We’re in trouble with our debt and to add this on now, an additional imposition on the taxpayers.”

Board member Leslie Juby said legislation is expected in the January session to implement all-day kindergarten statewide by 2016.

As to the state-mandated Common Core State Standards, Superintendent Kent Mutchler said it was “to learn things in greater depth.”

“In the past, our curriculum was wide but shallow,” Mutchler said. “Common Core makes it more narrow but deeper.”

Mayor congratulates Batavia St . Charles aims to keep tax levy flat Bulldogs at City Council meeting

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – For the fifth year in a row, the city of St. Charles plans to hold its operational tax levy flat.

At a public hearing Monday, Finance Director Chris Minick said he expects the city’s estimated equalized assessed value to decrease by 4.5 percent in 2013 compared with 2012. Taxpayers whose property values also decline by that amount will pay the same amount for the 2013 levy as they paid for the 2012 levy. Bills will go up for taxpayers whose valuation goes up or stays the same.

The levy, which has been frozen since 2009, would be at an estimated $21.8 million for 2013, with the operational portion held at about $12 million. In 2012, the levy was about $23.3 million. The actual levy request is 6.4 percent

less than 2012.

Minick said over the fiveyear period, the owner of a home valued at $300,000 in 2009 would see a tax savings of $112.

Minick said the amount of a homeowner’s taxes depends on the valuation of taxpayers’ property as it relates to the change in the city’s equalized assessed value.

He said if the value of a property declines by more than the city-wide average of 4.5 percent, the property tax bill would remain the same.

For example, the owner of a home worth $200,000 in 2012 paid $585 in taxes. If that same property is valued at $191,000 in 2013, the homeowner would still pay $585. But that doesn’t mean all homeowners will see a flat tax rate in 2013.

The City Council is expected to vote on the proposed tax levy at its Dec. 16 meeting.

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – With a signed game ball next to him during the Batavia City Council meeting Monday night, Mayor Jeff Schielke again congratulated the Batavia Bulldogs football team for winning the Class 6A state championship in DeKalb on Saturday.

He detailed the team’s return to Batavia Saturday night, recalling how emergency personnel escorted the buses through town and that crowds of people stood alongside the route – even those who had no connection to the team.

“The emotions were flowing so strongly,” Schielke said. “It spoke to the heart of what this town is all about.”

The signed game ball, which the Bulldogs gave Schielke during the Celebration of Lights Festival on Sunday, will be donated to the De-

pot Museum, the mayor said.

“This really belongs to the people of Batavia,” he said.

He suspects the city might gain some residents because of the state title, he said. After the team came in second in 2006, he said, a number of people stopped by City Hall expressing interest in moving to Batavia because of the successful football season.

“Now [that] we have won … it wouldn’t surprise me that this has some impact on the housing market of Batavia,” Schielke said.

In other news, the City Council unanimously approved a six-month moratorium on accepting applications for certain nonretail uses in commercial districts such as Randall and Kirk roads. Those uses would include banks and health care facilities.

Also unanimously, the City Council approved the 2014 budget, which anticipates $95.4 million in expenses and

$92.1 million in revenue.

With the exception of a loan that wasn’t included in last year’s levy, City Administrator Bill McGrath said the 2014 levy is equal to 2013’s levy.

“In terms of the number of dollars sought,” he said, “[it is] basically the same as it was last year.”

Addressing public comments that were concerned about the tax rate, McGrath explained the city has no control over the tax rate.

“The tax rate is totally dependent on the [equalized assessed value] of the community,” he said.

For example, he said, if the same amount is levied but the EAV has increased, the tax rate will go down. If the EAV decreases, he said, the tax rate will go up.

HealthCare.gov – better, but not great THE WASHINGTON POST These days, the message of President Obama’s administration is that HealthCare.gov is a lot better than it was on its disastrous inauguration two months ago.

Well, sure. Using HealthCare. gov is a more pleasant experience than it used to be. Registering is much easier. The site doesn’t freeze repeatedly. But it still is not where it should have been on Oct. 1 – and the early success of the policy still hangs in the balance.

Leading up to its weekend deadline to get the site working, Obama administration officials assured the public that the “vast majority of users” would be able to use it. To them, “vast majority” means 80 percent of users — which is still too low. Officials boast the site is able to handle 50,000 simultaneous users. Yet that was the goal for Oct. 1, a day on which five times that many tried to access the site at once.

Then there are less-visible issues. Officials admit they are still having trouble with the files that transfer enrollment information to insurers. Other parts of the site’s back end still aren’t built. It was right – but not encouraging – that the Obama administration extended the date by which people have to apply to get coverage that starts on Jan. 1. Even that, though, is risky. Insurers will have only eight days to work out the logistics of enrolling those signing up late this month.

Timing has become the most urgent implementation issue.

Late last month the Commonwealth Fund estimated that the country is roughly 3 percent of the way to its goal of enrolling 7 million people through new marketplaces by the end of March, when 2014’s enrollment period

ends for good. The program must reach people who are very far from policy debates; a recent Kaiser Family Foundation poll found that 38 percent of the uninsured had heard “nothing at all about” the new health-insurance marketplaces the law is setting up for them.

The challenge is evident even in states where implementation is going well. California, which set up its own health care marketplace site, led the nation with 80,000 enrollments in private insurance plans as of late last month. The profile of those signing up also appeared balanced between young and old, a balance the policy needs to work. Yet the task is still huge. The Golden State has only four more months to sign up the remaining 500,000 to 700,000 people it expects to enroll and obtain subsidies through its marketplace by March 31.

Numbers everywhere will pick up as deadlines approach. The extent to which they do, however, depends on – among other things – the length and quality of the delayed enrollment campaign, and the extent to which people respond to the threat of charges from the Internal Revenue Service – assuming that understaffed agency can pull off its part of the rollout.

In Washington, where shortterm thinking is the only type, it’s easy to look at the many challenges that remain, condemn the whole reform as unworkable and propose some counter-productive “solution.” That would be a terrible mistake. Though elements of the rollout have flopped, the policy itself has not proven a disaster. It is still one President Obama, nervous Democrats, uncooperative Republicans and others at all levels of government can get to work. It’s about time they all tried their hardest.

Batavia wins Class 6A state championship

By Thanksgiving weekend, in the IHSA Class 6A state championship game, that was mighty bad news for Richards.

The enormous momentum the Bulldogs generated in recent weeks bubbled over Saturday at Huskie Stadium, overwhelming Richards as Batavia won its first football state championship in program history, 34-14, in front of thousands of delirious B-Town backers.

Batavia’s leaders rose to the occasion in the championship game, and the rest of the team followed suit, burying Richards early and never letting up.

“I’m so proud of everyone who took it upon themselves and took such great pride in this community,” Batavia senior quarterback Micah Coffey said. “You know, we wanted to bring this championship home. It’s an amazing feeling to know that we did.”

“We’re just a really good team,” Batavia coach Dennis Piron said. “We’re a lot better than everybody realized, I guess. Even maybe us coaches at times, too. These guys, when they got to this level, they had another level to their game. This group of kids could raise their level above where they were week by week, minute by minute.

“I will tell you, when they could taste it, which was [last week at Rockford Boylan], they were going to get it. They knew it. They could feel it.

You could see it in their eyes.”

Any championship-game butterflies for Batavia vanished swiftly thanks to a sizzling start.

Richards’ first drive ended with an interception from Batavia all-state cornerback Michael Moffatt on a deep ball by Richards quarterback Hasan Muhammad Rogers.

Batavia then rode its other all-stater, fellow senior Anthony Scaccia, extensively during a 79-yard drive that ended with a 1-yard Scaccia touchdown plunge, one of his three rushing TDs. Scaccia ran it 33 times for 189 yards and did not fumble against Richards’ vaunted defense.

Bulldogs’ backers on their game QUICK READ Kevin Druley Batavia sports fans saluted the boys in long-sleeved basketball jerseys and crimson and white striped warmup pants as their final collective act of a stupendous Saturday.

Compared with the Bulldogs’ IHSA Class 6A state football championship victory against Richards a few hours earlier, a double-overtime boys basketball win to cap the Ken Peddy Windmill Classic certainly paled.

In the interest of the recency effect, however, closing the day with some roundball revelry didn’t hurt. Several gridders were calling The City of Energy a football town around 4:45 p.m.

Saturday, when Batavia’s newest favorite sons descended the medal stand at NIU’s Huskie Stadium with the program’s first championship trophy.

Does a sports-mad community have a debate on its hands?

That’s no pot for us to stir. Still, the volume of Bulldogs backers who trekked to DeKalb spoke for itself, cheering and chanting for the better part of Saturday afternoon.

“That was amazing,” Bulldogs senior wide receiver/ defensive back Rourke Mullins said. “It sounded like being at a college game. Touchdowns, picks, big hits, it was like a roar. You couldn’t hear anything.”

Several in Batavia’s impressive turnout – which filled most of the west side of Huskie Stadium – coped with much more serene windshield time before arriving in DeKalb.

The Batavia girls basketball team left its Thanksgiving tournament in downstate Morton after thumping Normal Community in a game that tipped off at 8:30 a.m. The Bulldogs had another game rescheduled for 10 a.m., but elected to get a jump on traveling.

If they only knew the Class 5A championship between Montini and Sacred Heart-Griffin would last three hours and 11 minutes as Montini finished 25-for-60 passing.

The parents of Batavia coach Kevin Jensen, who doubles as a football assistant, scored an important assist after Jensen forgot the team’s title game tickets at BHS. The group arrived in DeKalb around 12:15 p.m., 45 minutes before the scheduled kickoff but one hour and 41 minutes ahead of the actual start.

“It was quite a weekend,”

Jensen wrote in an email.

By the time the Bulldogs took the field, charging toward midfield and emphatically planting their spirit flag there, their posse was in full throat.

“Everyone knew everyone was going to come to this game,” senior running back Anthony Scaccia said. “I mean, state championship, everyone is going to be there. It’s just great to know that in Batavia, that’s what people do. They come to football games, they support the Bulldogs.”

As it does each season, Batavia’s push toward the playoffs began with much less spectator-friendly summer workouts. Part of the offseason docket included working with youngsters at the Junior Bulldog camp at Rotolo Middle School.

Naturally, the week brought its share of football, but there

typically are outings to swim and take in a movie.

“The kids look up to us, and we have to carry ourselves with a different demeanor than other teenagers do, but we love that,” Mullins said. “We love being role models.”

The Bulldogs experienced another taste of their relationship with the community during halftime of the Windmill Classic finale. Again, a crowd rose rowdily to its feet, albeit in fewer numbers and indoors.

Basketball town, football town or tiddlywinks town, this was B-Town.

There’s no arguing citizens celebrated a landmark day.

Coffey and Moffatt made history of their own late in the first quarter. Batavia started its second possession at its own 2-yard line, and faced a thirdand-8 from the 4.

That’s when Coffey connected with Moffatt on a flag route for a 96-yard touchdown connection, the longest TD pass in 6A title game history. After Howie Morgano’s extra point, it was 14-0 Batavia with 48 seconds left in the first quarter.

“I saw that Moffatt had a little bit of separation, and I knew that I wasn’t going to have a whole lot more time in the pocket because obviously being down in our goal line, you don’t have a whole ton of time, and those [linebackers] are really good, they were getting to me,” Coffey said. “So I took a chance, and their safety made a bad decision. For Moffatt to be able to pull that in and then kick it into high gear and take it into the end zone was something really special.”

“I was hoping I could keep my feet because I knew if I did, then we could turn it into big yardage,” Moffatt said.

Richards (12-2) came within 14-7 after a 9-yard TD pass from Rogers to Dedrick Shannon early in the second quarter, but Batavia added two more TDs – a 25-yard pass from Coffey to a wide-open Rourke Mullins, and another 1-yard Scaccia run – to go ahead 28-7.

Batavia’s lead swelled to 34-7 at the 8:16 mark of the third quarter on Scaccia’s final TD run – giving him 28 on the season – and Batavia mostly was in clock-milking mode throughout a workmanlike, bruising second half.

Coffey finished 15 for 18 for 229 yards passing with one interception.

Batavia picked off Rogers three times, with senior linebacker Anthony Thielk and Mullins following Moffatt’s early interception.

Piron said the main difference between Batavia now and in the 31-25, Week 2 loss to Richards was a healthier defense and a team that embraced the need to improve as the season unfolded. In its season-closing 12-game winning streak, 11 of the wins came by 20 points or more.

“We really got better every week so I think what you saw near the end of the season, kind of what we did here in the playoffs, was a testament to the whole program, all those kids, coaches, and then these guys for every single week trying to raise their game and get better,” Piron said.

Saturday marked Batavia’s second state championship game appearance; the Bulldogs lost to Normal, 30-20, in the 2006 6A final, contested in Champaign. Batavia’s championship is the first football state title for a Tri-Cities school and first for an area public school since Kaneland claimed consecutive titles in the late 1990s.

Batavia planned a host of celebratory gatherings throughout the weekend, including being hailed at halftime of the Batavia boys basketball team’s home game Saturday night. Players relished the chance to bask with the community, though hugging and laughing with one another was gratifying in its own right.

“Just sharing this with them, the guys that I grew up, is just so special,” Coffey said.

DeKALB – Plenty of teams roll into state football championship games fronted by present and future Division I recruits.

Richards is one of those teams with a few elite athletes on its side.

The Class 6A state champion Batavia football team might not end up producing any marquee, Football Bowl Subdivison football players, so Batavia’s 34-14 thumping of Richards in Saturday’s state championship game makes a compelling case for football being the ultimate team sport.

“This team has heart and a work ethic that demonstrates what it takes to win state,” Batavia senior receiver/cornerback Rourke Mullins said. “It shows you don’t need a bunch of D-I talent on your team to win a state title. If you all work as hard as you can and you all put the work in, you’re going to be rewarded.”

Batavia won its first state championship in program history with a whole bunch of very good high school football players.

Yes, senior linebacker Anthony Thielk has received some D-I attention, and the Bulldogs have numerous players that will compete collegiately at some level.

But there are no four or five-star recruits being bombarded by recruiting pitches from colleges in prestigious conferences.

Batavia had two all-staters, Anthony Scaccia and Michael Moffatt. The 150-pound Scaccia has received most of his looks from smaller programs such as Butler and Drake, while Moffatt, who has battled Crohn’s disease, is unlikely to play college football.

With a roster off the radars of big-time colleges, coach Dennis Piron and his coaching staff nonetheless managed to mold a true juggernaut, a team that closed the season winning 11 of its past 12 games by 20 points or more, with several high-caliber opponents among those victims.

Preparing a game plan against Batavia must have been exasperating for coaches hardwired to identify and exploit weakness in the opposition. The Bulldogs were stout across the

board, and had quality backups to boot.

“You could win a lot of football with a lot of really good players, and that’s what we have,” Piron said. “We’ve got a lot of good players. We don’t really have a position where we don’t have a good player. What I will tell you is we’ve got a lot of college football players. There are a lot of guys in this program that can play college football. I mean we might have as many as 10, 11, 12 guys who could leave here this year and go play college football.

“They love football. These guys love the game of football, and that’s something special.

They don’t just play and they’re done. They think about it, they live, taste, breathe it. I mean, it’s a big, big thing for them.”

Batavia has more than its share of talent, but that was only going to take the Bulldogs so far. Factor in the deep playbook employed by offensive coordinator Mike Gaspari and executed so crisply by the offense, and a healthier defense that tackled dramatically better than in the Week 2 loss to Richards, and you had a team that proved to be head-and-shoulders above the rest of the 6A field.

“I think it’s hard for defenses to exploit us just because we have so many formations and sets, and we can run so many different things out of it,” Moffatt said. “And then on the defensive side of the ball, we’re always around to tackle – if there’s a broken tackle, we’re there.”

Scaccia called the Bulldogs more brotherhood than team, and now this bunch will have the program’s first state championship to bind them together even tighter for decades to come.

“Truthfully, I think we just have more heart than anyone, more ambition than anyone, any other team in the state,” Scaccia said. “I think that’s what separates us from everyone else.”

Batavia doesn’t have a bunch of guys who will be playing football on TV in the years to come.

But the Bulldogs were on TV Saturday in DeKalb, playing together one last time.

Man, did they put on a show.

Piron relishes having son along for ride to the title

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The first state championship season in Batavia football history was made all the sweeter for Batavia coach Dennis Piron by sharing it with his son, Peyton.

Peyton Piron was a junior receiver for the Bulldogs, and his prophecy from 2006 rang true Saturday after Batavia beat Richards, 34-14, for the IHSA Class 6A state title.

Coach Piron said Peyton helped lift his spirits after Batavia’s 2006 championship game loss to Normal, where Piron was an assistant coach under Mike Gaspari.

“I remember my son saying ‘Dad, that just means my class, my guys, when we’re playing, we get a chance Dennis Piron to be the first class to win a state title,’ “ Piron said. “I never forgot that.

And to have him on the first state championship football team, first one in our history of Batavia, to carry water or hold snaps or do whatever he does, it’s truly an honor for him and our family. He’s a Bulldog. From the day he was born, the kid’s a Bulldog.”

Peyton Piron played sparingly in varsity games this year, but should be in line for more time as a senior.

“Peyton’s a great guy,” Batavia senior receiver/cornerback Rourke Mullins said.

“He’s a hard-worker, and he’s going to have a big year for himself next year.”

Piron is trying not to take Peyton’s presence around the team for granted.

“I’m not away from him every day like I have been for the last 25 years,” Piron said.

“I better pay attention to him better, quit yelling at him so much, because he’ll be gone

pretty quick.”

Piron became emotional when discussing the close family ties within the program.

“Mike Gaspari is Peyton’s godfather,” Piron said.

“That’s Batavia, guys. There you go.”

Grind it out: Batavia scored 28 points in the first half Saturday compared to six in the second half, but the Bulldogs did what they needed to keep Richards at bay.

“There was a lot of cramps again, a lot of kids limping off the field – it became a really, really tough second half … that was a heck of a physical football game,” Piron said.

“There were some hits in that game that were tremendous on both sides of the ball.”

“The hits kept coming, and it got tougher and tougher to get yards on both sides.”

THE BEST PLAY BY PLAY.

Leonhard injured in win: About the only downside for Batavia on Saturday was an injury to defensive end Josh Leonhard, the team’s sacks leader.

“I don’t think it’s too good,” Piron said. “It’s kind of a shame, he’s an awful dynamic football player, but he’ll bounce back.”

Leonhard hit Richards quarterback Hasan Muhammad Rogers as he threw on fourth-and-goal at the end of the first half to cap a key stand for the Bulldogs’ defense, but Leonhard then hobbled off the field.

Seldom-used backup Joey Gross saw some time in the game in Leonhard’s absence, and Piron praised the junior’s contributions.

“He had been looking great against our No. 1 offense, he was playing scout … He got his number called, boom, went in there, and really put some nice pressure on the quarterback,” Piron said.

end. And to have him now up in the press box helping us, calling our offense, it’s literally unfair to other teams that we play.”

Batavia outscored opponents 594-200 this season, winning four of its five playoff games by at Mike Gaspari least 20 points.

Since his retirement, players routinely have called Gaspari a “guru” or “mad scientist,” finding his new schedule allowed him additional time to pore over film and game plans, prompting even more meticulous insight and analysis.

“For how much work he puts in, it definitely pays off for us,” senior running back Anthony Scaccia said. “He makes it easy for us. He’s up there working hard and it definitely helps us out.”

The tutelage always comes in polite, constructive tones.

“He’s not like Piron with the screaming, but he gives us advice at the right moments,” senior wide receiver/defensive back Rourke Mullins said, “and it’s always good.”

Gaspari compares his current role to his head coaching days. While he provided input to defensive and special teams coaches then, his primary duties still involved overseeing the offense and play calling.

Batavia finished as Class 6A runners up in 2006 and was a 6A semifinalist in 2011, Gaspari’s first season as offensive coordinator.

“We’ve had so many special groups that just haven’t quite achieved this, so this is kind of for a lot of teams that came before them – and I think these kids realize that,” Gaspari said. “We try to emphasize history at times with the program, and I think they appreciate that, but it’s just a fantastic group of kids who’ve worked extremely hard. And

I’m just fortunate enough to get to coach them.”

Take away what Gaspari called “70- to 80-hour weeks” as Batavia’s AD, and naturally, he’ll have a clearer head.

During retirement, he enjoys working out and golfs once or twice a week when the weather allows.

Gaspari casually remarks about the favorable senior rates at Fox Valley golf courses, a segue of sorts into his future beyond football.

“For me, it’s just a matter of being selfish that I continue to do it,” Gaspari said. “I keep telling [Piron] it’s about time for me to wrap it up because you’ve got younger guys that aren’t going to get what I’m doing until I step away.”

Gaspari admits an end date to his coaching career “has to” be part of his thought process, but did not suggest that time is imminent.

From where he’s sitting, this euphoria could last awhile.

DeKALB – Mike Gaspari munched on a postgame snack Saturday night from a relatively familiar perch.

Seated just behind the driver’s seat of the Batavia football team’s charter bus, he again observed the action from higher ground.

As Bulldogs players reveled on their way toward the bus and up the stairs, Gaspari grinned in kind. He had just directed many of them from the press box as the offensive coordinator during Batavia’s first state championship season, his third year enjoying the so-called penthouse view after a lengthy run as head coach.

“When I look back on some of the dark years back in the [1980s] and how tough it was to get things going, get people believing, it wasn’t just kids,” Gaspari said. “You had to get adults believing. To be at this

point is very, very special from where I sit.”

Gaspari went 135-122 in 26 seasons as Batavia head coach. He qualified for the playoffs 14 times in his final 20 seasons after a 12-42 run from 1985 to 1990.

He retired after the 2010 season, stepping down from his athletic director post the next spring.

At the time, Gaspari often reiterated that it simply was time for him to cede control of the program to longtime assistant Dennis Piron, a close friend who graduated just before Gaspari’s first season as head coach. Both men also are North Central College products and godfathers to the other’s sons.

Those ties made extending Gaspari an offer to remain on staff a no-brainer for Piron.

“It’s father-son, brothers.

Whatever you want to call it,” Piron said. “These guys know what the relationship is like.

After an injury-plagued 2012-13 season for St. Charles East, the Saints absorbed a significant injury blow again before this season even tipped.

David Mason, a 6-foot-7, 205-pound post player entering his third full varsity season, had a lingering stress fracture from football season that was worsened during an open gym workout before the season.

The result was what is called a “Jones fracture” of the fifth metatarsal of his right foot. He had surgery to insert a screw Nov. 15, and the Saints hope Mason can return around Christmas.

“I’m thankful it wasn’t the entire season,” Mason said.

“I’ll be ready to go and have fresh legs to jump in.”

Without Mason, 6-5 junior Mick Vyzral was put into East’s starting lineup, and Vyzral earned favorable reviews as the Saints went 2-2 during last week’s home Thanksgiving tournament.

BY TERRY KOVEL KOVELS.COM The ancient Greeks collected bottles, but only a few wealthy American collectors were buying bottles in the early 1900s.

At the time, only commercial flasks that held whiskey and a few other hand-blown bottles were considered important. Probably the earliest book for bottle collectors was written in 1921 by Stephen Van Rensselaer. In 1941, George and Helen McKearin wrote “American Bottles” and created a system of identification that listed, numbered, described and sketched all known historic American flasks. Bottle collecting became a hobby of the middle class in the 1950s. Valuable bottles were dug from backyards and river banks or found at resale shops or yard sales. The first collectors club, the Antique Bottle Collectors Association of California, started in 1959. By the 1960s, articles on old bottles were being published in magazines and books. Kovels’ “Bottles Price List,” written in 1971, was the first of 13 editions. We wrote the last in 2006.

Interest in bottles has gone up and down during the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s, but clubs, shows and collections remain.

Prices of historic flasks have gone from less than $100 to thousands of dollars.

Fruit jars, soda bottles, commemorative bottles, perfumes, poisons and inks attracted new collectors. But who would have guessed that old bottles could become part of modern art? Amateurs could buy kits that helped them take old bottles and stretch them into elongated modern shapes. Early 1900s bottles were turned purple by exposure to the sun or radiation. Claire Falkenstein became famous for sculptures made from iron rods and drooping bottles. An English artist, Barry McGee, made modern art from bottles he painted with pictures of heads. He chose empty whiskey bottles to picture street people. His bottle art sells for thousands of dollars. Still, the most expensive commercial bottles today remain the historic flasks. Rarities can sell for more than $40,000. *** Q: A few months ago, my husband and I bought a mahogany bookcase with four leaded glass doors at an estate sale.

It’s about 54 inches high, 66 inches wide and 12 inches deep. There is a small brass plaque on one of the shelves that reads “Library Bureau Sole Makers.” Can you give us the history of this bookcase?

A: Library Bureau was founded by

Melvil Dewey (1851-1931), a librarian and the inventor of the Dewey Decimal Classification System used by many libraries today. He published his system in 1876, the same year he founded a company that sold library supplies.

The company operated under different names until it became Library Bureau in 1881. It made a bookcase that could be joined with others to create a long wall of bookcases. The company was bought

by Remington Rand in 1927 and became part of Midwest Library Systems in 1976.

Library Bureau products still are being sold. *** Q: I have a ceramic vase marked “Mougin Nancy” and “J. Mougin.dc.” It has been in our family for more than 60 years. I would like to know who made it.

A: The marks on your vase were used

by Joseph Mougin (1876-1961). Joseph and his brother, Pierre, were French sculptors and ceramists known for their Art Nouveau and Art Deco designs. They worked in Nancy, a town in France, from 1906 until 1916, producing their own designs as well as works by other artists.

In 1916 they moved to nearby Luneville.

Your vase, marked “Mougin Nancy,” was made between 1906 and 1916. *** Q: I have a 9 1/2-inch Orrefors decanter decorated with an etching called “Susanna bathing with the old men watching her.” I can’t find any information about it. Do you know what it’s worth?

A: Orrefors, a Swedish glassworks, has been in business since 1898. It has made many styles of decorative and useful glass. The story of Susanna bathing is an apocryphal chapter in the Bible’s book of Daniel. The story, about

made by Homer Laughlin, Royal China and Taylor, Smith & Taylor were included as premiums from the 1920s until the 1960s. Tea Rose is the name of a Homer Laughlin shape. Plates have a scalloped edge and a six-panel border. The shape was decorated with different decals, many of flowers, and also was made in solid colors. Tea Rose was introduced in about 1937, but it is not known when it was used as a Quaker Oats premium.

Three empty whisky bottles and three metal wall brackets plus the imagination of a modern artist made this artwork by Barry McGee. The untitled piece sold for $6,875 in October 2013 at Los Angeles Modern Auctions. a pair of old men trying to blackmail a virtuous young woman, has been the basis of many pieces of artwork throughout the centuries. It is likely your decanter isn’t yet an antique (100 years old), but in 1993 one like it auctioned at Christie’s for $690. *** Q: I’m trying to identify a plate that was given to the Point Cabrillo Light House Museum. It has a white background with roses in the center and on the border. There is no mark. A couple of people have told me it was a Quaker Oats premium. I found that Quaker Oats gave Homer Laughlin’s Tea Rose pattern plates as premiums. Our plate has similar flowers but in a different arrangement. The interior of the museum is being restored to the way it would have been in 1935 and we want to know if the plate is from that period.

‘Out of the Furnace’ comes up short in gritty take on vengeance

By ED SYMKUS More Content Now First-time scripter Brad Ingelsby and second-time writer-director Scott Cooper (“Crazy Heart”), along with a cast full of actors giving it their best, try hard to reach Shakespearian depths and heights in this gritty take on vengeance, but ultimately they come up short.

Set in 2008 in a sad little Pennsylvania town where locals’ aspirations usually stop when they land a lifetime job at the local mill, “Out of the Furnace” introduces two brothers, each with startlingly different temperaments. Russell (Christian Bale) dutifully, if unhappily, works at the mill, just like his father, who is slowly dying of some mill-related sickness; he goes home each night to his loving girlfriend, Lena (Zoe Saldana); he keeps a protective eye out for his troubled younger brother Rodney (Casey Affleck).

Rodney, a true piece of work, is recently back home from the war in Iraq, but it’s never made clear if it’s because he fulfilled his duty or he was asked to leave. What’s very clear is that he’s got a drinking problem and a gambling problem, and that he keeps losing borrowed money to play the ponies.

When Russell spots Rodney, in brooding mode, at an off track betting locale, it’s quickly establishes that Rodney is a lost soul, and that he and Russell share a combination tentative and close relationship.

But even before all of this familial business, the film presents its villain – the heartless, fearless, violence-prone, and purely evil Harlan DeGroat (Woody Harrelson), who not only takes his girlfriend to the drivein to see “Midnight Meat Train,” but he also beats her and the Samaritan who tries to help her.

Harlan is a small-time but powerful thug who runs illegal bare-knuckle street fights. So does the less powerful but sketchy John Petty (Willem Dafoe), who is the “manager”

So, maybe John can loan the hot-headed Rodney to Harlan, have Harlan bet his wad on the opponent, then have Rodney take a fall. Score settled, debt paid. That’s if, improbably, Rodney will go through with taking the fall, since he so enjoys beating up other people.

There’s probably story enough there to easily fill the film’s twohour running time. But the scripters have other plans. They want to make things even more difficult for the nice people, get the problematic ones even deeper into crises and turn the bad guys into absolute monsters.

All of that could have worked, if not for some overkill in plotting.

Drunk driving and a fatal car crash begets some prison time (the length of which is never revealed, but can sort of be followed by ever-changing beard lengths).

Post-prison predicaments lead up to a cliché about how people can nev-

er really change, a side story of lost love, and then to some dire situations that end up in back-stabbing and ensuing repercussions, along with a couple of brutal deaths and, unsurprisingly, planned retribution.

As mentioned up top, performances, notably those of Bale, Affleck and Harrelson, hit high marks, and the choreography of the fight scenes make them frighteningly realistic.

But the movie’s heart has a sort of slow beat, and at times seems lost or just misplaced. We know who to root for and who to wish dead, but things get dragged out to the point of caring less about it all.

And when the abrupt ending comes swooping in, it leaves us wondering what the last few minutes were about and what the final standalone scene even means.

High- and low-tech treatments help Parkinson’s sufferers Dear Doctor K: I’ve been taking levodopa for years to treat my Parkinson’s disease. Lately, though, it hasn’t been as effective. Are there any other treatment options?

Dear Reader: It is quite common for the effectiveness of levodopa to change over time.

Fortunately, there are other treatments available. Some are very high-tech, reflecting the latest scientific knowledge. Others are very low-tech, reflecting the wisdom of the past.

Parkinson’s disease occurs when a certain part of the brain does not make enough of the chemical signal dopamine. Dopamine is one of the natural “neurotransmitter” chemicals that one brain cell uses to send a signal to another cell. It has many effects, one of which is to help coordinate movement. Without dopamine, hands tremble, arms and legs become stiff, movement slows, and balance and coordination fail. You may have trouble walking, talking, swallowing and doing everyday tasks.

Drugs such as levodopa can fill in for natural dopamine and ease symptoms. If the drug has become less effective, your doctor can try adjusting the dose or schedule of your medication.

That often restores effectiveness.

A non-drug type of treatment that has been used for more than a decade to help control Parkinson’s symptoms is known as deep-brain stimulation (DBS).

It involves placing a tiny wire called a lead in the part of the brain that controls movement.

A matchbook-sized stimulator is implanted under the skin below the collarbone. The lead and stimulator are connected to each other by a second wire. This wire runs under the skin of the shoulder, neck and head. The device emits small pulses of electricity that are received by the wire in the brain and help to coordinate movement. DBS – either alone or in combination with levodopa – might help control your symptoms.

Another, much lower-tech option is tai chi. Tai chi is an ancient Chinese practice that we’ve talked about several times before in this column. It involves slow, graceful movements that flow smoothly from one challenging pose to the next.

Tai chi enhances balance and

muscle strength. It helps prevent falls and girds against physical decline. People with Parkinson’s can also reap these benefits of tai chi. An excellent book about tai chi, “The Harvard Medical School Guide to Tai Chi,” by my faculty colleague Dr. Peter Wayne, is described on my website, AskDoctorK.com.

The benefits of tai chi in people with Parkinson’s disease were demonstrated in a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine. Researchers randomly assigned study participants with mild to moderate Parkinson’s disease to twice-weekly sessions of tai chi, strength-building exercises or stretching. After six months, Parkinson’s patients who did tai chi were stronger and had much better balance than patients in the other groups. The tai chi group also had significantly fewer falls and slower rates of decline in overall motor control.

When I was a medical student, there were few treatments for Parkinson’s disease. That has changed dramatically, due not only to scientific progress but also to the scientific study of ancient practices.

Some adults only drink on special occasions Dr. Wallace: You said that there is a high correlation between college students’ grades and the amount of alcohol they drink. You said that those who don’t drink or drink only small amounts of alcohol earn better grades than those who drink a lot of alcohol. Where did you get your data?

My fraternity roommate and I consume a lot of liquor weekly, but we both are excellent students. If alcohol is so destructive, why do college bigwigs host cocktail parties? The human race has been consuming alcohol since the Garden of Eden, and that wonderful tradition will last forever!

Dear Student: The Center for Addiction and Substance Abuse compiled data from more than 3,000 four-year colleges and universities and found that students were split into two groups when it came to alcohol consumption: those who rarely drank or never drank, and those who drank often and to excess. To nobody’s surprise, the heavy drinkers were the poorest students.

In a study at Southern Illinois University, it was determined that students with poor grade-point averages consumed more than 11 alcoholic drinks per week while, on average, students with the highest grade-point averages had four drinks per week or less.

This is a general picture. Students can crash and burn in college for reasons other than overdrinking. And, yes, some heavy drinkers still manage to pull off decent grades – postponing the collapse of their lives from alcohol abuse till middle age, perhaps. And while

’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace there’s still hypocrisy on campus – with teachers and administrators hosting cocktail parties while condemning student drinking – there’s a growing trend in academia to make school-related functions alcohol-free.

I’m passionate in my belief that society would benefit at every level – the family, the community, the state and the nation – if alcohol were suddenly to disappear from our lives.

Alcohol is a powerfully addictive drug, and once a person is addicted, his life and the lives of loved ones are dramatically impaired.

Addicts can become alcohol-free, but will remain alcoholics the rest of their lives.

Dr. Wallace: My boyfriend has been arrested and convicted for selling cocaine and is serving a six-month sentence. I am holding some of his cocaine in my garage, but I’m very nervous about it. I weighed it and it weighs about 2 ounces.

Dear Nameless: Flush it down the toilet. If your boyfriend is worth waiting for, he’ll be fully rehabilitated by the time he gets out of prison and convinced that crime doesn’t pay. In that case, he’ll be glad the cocaine is gone.

If he wants the cocaine when he gets out, tell him that you disposed of it and then dump him, too. A life with him would be miserable.

Hosea Ballou, a clergyman and theological writer who died in 1852, said, “Education commences at the mother’s knee, and every word spoken within the hearing of little children tends towards the formation of character.”

We bridge players were all weaned on our mother’s or grandmother’s knee to count losers in a suit contract. If she was a taskmaster, she would have told us also to count winners.

Sometimes, the right direction is clearer when we check winners.

In this deal, for example, South is in four spades. West cashes two top diamonds, then shifts to the heart king. How should declarer proceed?

North’s redouble promised at least 10 points and denied four or more spades. East, with a definite preference among the unbid suits, was allowed to advance with two diamonds, even holding no points. From the logic of the auction, his hand had to be weak. Then, when North rebid three spades, South bid game, hoping for the best.

Declarer has four losers: two hearts and two diamonds.

He has only seven top tricks: five spades, one heart and one club. To make his contract, he must win four club tricks. But that might require taking three club finesses. And to do that, South needs three hand entries.

After taking the third trick with his heart ace, he must take an immediate club finesse – there is no time to lose.

When the finesse wins, declarer cashes dummy’s spade queen, plays a spade to his king, and takes a second club finesse.

After a spade to the ace, South takes the third club finesse and claims.
