‘Very dangerous driving conditions’ Mix of slush, sleet affecting travel in Kane County

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com After northern Illinois enjoyed balmy weather for most of December, true winter arrived Monday, with a windy, icy, sleeting, slushy slap.

National Weather Service meteorologist Andrew Krein said the wintry mix occurred because of freezing temperatures near the surfaces with a wedge or layer of warmer air aloft. A winter storm warning eventually was extended until 9 p.m. Monday.

“It’s causing what is frozen to melt and then refreeze,” Krein said Monday. “And you get freezing rain or sleet – or like today, you get everything.”

Roadways were especially hazardous throughout the state, according to a press release from the Illinois State Police, because of icing on bridges and flooding in low areas.

A rain and snow mix is possible for Tuesday, but mainly before 9 a.m., acording to the National Weather Service.

Monday’s storm caused power outages for 30,000 ComEd customers throughout the area as of 2 p.m., spokeswoman Linsey Godbey said.

ComEd crews restored power to 14,000 customers, but 16,000 remained without power as of Monday afternoon, Godbey added.

“We have more than 300 crews working to restore those outages,” Godbey said. “This is a wide-reaching storm across northern Illinois.”

The severe weather prompted the closure of Route 47 between Routes 38 and 64 because of ice buildup on the roadway, officials said. It also caused the Sugar Grove Public Library and Elburn’s Town and Country Public Library to close early Monday.

“All 24 trucks have been out since 5 a.m.” Edwards said.

“We have three sections of Randall Road, and it takes two trucks per section and an hour and a half to get it done.”

Despite the reports of plowing and salting, Geneva resident Marie Lee said she “saw no evidence of roads plowed or salted.”

“It was very dangerous driving conditions,” Lee said.

“I traveled Randall Road from Geneva to Orchard to go to [Interstate] 88 at about 11:15 a.m. to noon.”

Stahr wrote in his email that even with public works “out and about in the community, the constant freezing rain can change road conditions quite quickly. People still need to exercise extreme caution if they have to be driving.”

Officials re-think plans for Charlestowne Mall ST. CHARLES – The officials behind the redevelopment of Charlestowne Mall this year remained committed to the property, although their initial plans have changed.

The Krausz Companies Inc. bought the 1.1 million-squarefoot enclosed shopping center in November 2013 with plans to give it a new look and a new name, The Quad St. Charles.

Completion initially was targeted for fall 2015.

Instead this year, Quad officials continued to search for tenants and said in October that they are exploring other ways to get businesses on the property.

“We’re having to re-think some of our early drawings,” project director Chuck May said at that time.

Additionally, he said then, he hoped to announce a development on one of the outlots along the perimeter of the mall site.

Dependent on the ongoing efforts to secure tenants, mall officials have said they still hope for a redevelopment opening sometime in 2016.

May has said the mall site might evolve into a hybrid or mixed-use development that could include the anchor tenants, restaurants and medical offices.

Geneva man gets 30 years for wife’s murder A Geneva man was put on trial in March and eventually sent to prison for murdering his wife.

Shadwick King, 48, on March 16 was convicted of first-degree murder in the July 6, 2014, death of his wife, Kathleen King, 32.

Kathleen King’s body was found partially on railroad tracks less than a half-mile from the King family home in Geneva. It was the city’s

first homicide since 1975.

King’s trial began on March 2 and continued for two weeks. King took the stand in his own defense near the end of the trial, denying that he would ever harm his wife.

Prosecutors disagreed, making the argument that King was angry at his wife for becoming close to another man. They said King strangled his wife, changed

her clothes and moved her body to railroad tracks near their home.

After an unsuccessful attempt by King’s defense team to get another trial, King on July 31 was sentenced to 30 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Kane County Judge James Hallock in October denied a motion to reconsider King’s sentence.

District 303 sparks outcry with announcement of potential school closures ST. CHARLES – The September announcement that St. Charles School District 303 might close schools sparked outcry among parents and other community members.

The district – which is facing declining enrollment – is looking at options to cut costs

in anticipation of getting less state funding, having the cost of teacher pensions shifted from the state to the district and the possibility of a property tax freeze.

Officials presented four options – the choices are maintaining the status quo and three

scenarios involving the closure of Haines Middle School and Lincoln and Wasco elementary schools – and sought feedback online and through a series of community meetings.

Community members have rallied against certain options through various means.

Supporters of Lincoln Elementary School have been particularly vocal, having made “Save Lincoln” T-shirts and creating a “Save Lincoln Elementary School” float in the Electric Christmas Parade.

Meanwhile, those against the option that would put

sixth grade in the elementary schools have signed an online petition at Change.org. The petition has garnered more than 700 supporters.

The school board is expected to make a decision in January.

Hastert pleads guilty to bank fraud Former Republican House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert, of Plano, who served as the U.S. representative of the 14th Congressional District for 20 years, pleaded guilty in October to bank fraud charges connected to $1.7 million he paid to cover up what federal officials said was sexual misconduct dating to his years as a high school teacher and coach.

Hastert’s district office had been in Batavia. Hastert, 73, is scheduled to be sentenced in 2016, and prosecutors were recommending up to a six-month prison sentence.

Anderson Road opens in Elburn ELBURN – For years, drivers in Elburn had little choice but to spend significant time waiting for trains to cross as they traveled north and south through the village.

That changed this month, with the opening of the long-anticipated Anderson Road extension, which includes a bridge to cross over the Union Pacific tracks on the south side of town. Before the road’s extension, there were no bridge crossings over the tracks in Elburn.

Officials had pointed to studies that showed 105 trains a day passed through the village. During the grand opening of the extension, officials talked about the 20

years of effort needed for the project’s completion. It also was tied into Shodeen Inc.’s Elburn Station development, and – now that the road has opened – construction for that project can begin.

After the road’s opening, safety concerns emerged. Village officials said residents wanted to know why guard rails were in place at the top of the bridge but not in the area leading up to the bridge on either side. Officials said residents also asked about the possibility of adding street lights.

The road is under Kane County control for the first year, and a county official said the concerns would be considered.

Tentative agreement avoids strike at Kaneland MAPLE PARK – After months of negotiations, Kaneland’s school board and the organization that represents Kaneland School District 302’s teachers announced a tentative agreement, which avoided a strike.

After a Dec. 17 negotiating session, the school board and the Kaneland Education Association sent out a joint release that announced the agreement.

The announcement stated that it would be a four-year deal. Teachers ratified the contract, and school board members are to vote on the contract this week. Details could be released after the school board vote.

During the weeks leading up to the agreement, teachers formed long lines to speak during public comment periods at board meetings. They said they were fighting to improve teacher retention by boosting the base salary.

The board’s position was that teachers had been offered a fair raise, including a salary increase of between 15 percent to 18 percent over three years.

The Kaneland Education Association hosted a public forum during the fall as negotiations continued on a new contract with the Kaneland School District 302 Board.

The previous contract expired June 30. The sides had been working on a deal, but – by early November – KEA members voted in favor of moving forward with an intent to strike.

“both the board of education and KEA worked hard to develop an agreement that meets the needs of our teachers, students and community without a disruption to the school year. We look forward to working together moving forward.”

Elburn police work through challenging year ELBURN – The Elburn Police Department faced challenges throughout the year.

In the first few months, there was talk of having the Kane County Sheriff’s Office provide police service to the village as a potential answer to Elburn’s police pension issue, with officials saying that cost was preventing other work from getting done in town. Instead, the village will seek a sales tax increase.

In April, an Elburn police officer, David Wright, was facing sex assault charges. He first was placed on paid leave, then was fired. He has pleaded not guilty.

In June, police were criticized for writing tickets at the Metra train station in the village after Blackhawks fans packed the parking lot to travel to Chicago to celebrate the team’s Stanley Cup championship. Some who were ticketed

said there was nowhere else to park and no plan in place to accommodate those who were taking the train.

In addition, Elburn soon will be searching for a new police chief, after the current chief, Steve Smith, announced that he will be retiring at the end of the year. Former Kane County Sheriff Pat Perez will serve as the interim chief.

Missing Campton Hills teen found safe A Campton Hills teen who went missing for five days eventually was found safe at a friend’s house in St. Charles.

Word began to spread via social media on July 23 that Emily Czajkowski last had been seen July 22 in St. Charles.

The teen had walked away from the Pottawatomie Community Center after she was dropped off for a dance class at July 22, according to police.

She never attended the class, could not be located in the immediate area and was no longer answering her cellphone.

BATAVIA – A man’s initial refusal to leave a Batavia home on Nov. 10 resulted in a large police presence and the soft lockdown of two schools.

Police were first dis patched at 11:48 a.m. Nov. 10 to a home in the 800 block of Roberts Lane in Batavia for a report of a despondent male who was reportedly threatening to harm himself.

Police formed a security perimeter around the home, based on information that the man had access to a number of firearms.

Police continue home invasion investigation KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Police Department is continuing to investigate a home invasion reported last week on the city’s west side, police said Monday.

A resident of the 2000 block of Wessel Court reported that he heard knocking on his second-floor patio door, which

leads to a balcony, at about 10:14 p.m. Dec. 22 and found a man holding a black handgun, according to police.

After ordering the resident to let him inside the apartment, the man reportedly searched different areas of the apartment and demanded property from the resident.

The man then left the residence and was last seen leaving in a dark, small four-door

vehicle in “beater” condition, according to police.

Police have reported that the man was described as black, about 5-foot-8, 180 pounds and wearing a red warmup jacket and baggy jeans.

Marvin D. Dunn, 85, of Batavia passed away Saturday, December 26, 2015, at The Tillers in Oswego. He was born June 4, 1930, in Normal, Illinois, the son of Ollie E. Dunn and Ruby (Bradley) Dunn.

Marv graduated from Normal Community High in 1948, attended Illinois State University graduated from the University Of Illinois School Of Business in 1954 and received his Law degree from the University of Illinois in 1957. He joined the Sears and Streit Law firm of Aurora as an associate in 1957, then joined Arthur Puklin and Jerome Nelson in 1964 forming Puklin Nelson and Dunn, Attorneys at Law, Aurora Illinois. He served as an Assistant States Attorney of Kane County representing the Kane County Board and The Kane County Forest Preserve. He was elected Circuit Court Judge, 16th Judicial Circuit in 1976-1986, serving as Chief Judge from 19811983 and again in 1985-1986. Marv became an Appellate Court Justice in 1986, serving until his retirement in 1992.

Club Arcada planned for St. Charles ‘gem’

Ron Onesti of Onesti Entertainment Corp. – which took over management of the Arcada Theatre in 2005 – is seeking a Class B liquor license from St. Charles for a new business called Club Arcada.

It will be on the theater’s third floor.

Plans submitted to the city indicate an establishment of the same name opened in 1926 – the year the theater was built – and served as a pre-show holding room in addition to providing patrons with soft drinks. It also operated as a speakeasy during Prohibition, the plans state.

“We are looking to bring back that original feel of the Roaring ’20s by reopening Club Arcada,” according to the plans. “It would feature Prohibition-era drinks, flapper-girl floor shows, period music, comedy, jazz and blues.”

Next moves by Fed should not be according to plan BLOOMBERG VIEW For most of the past year, investors were asking when the U.S. Federal Reserve would start raising interest rates.

With that question answered, attention has turned to the likely pattern of increases over the coming months and years: How high will rates rise, and how quickly?

The answer, one hopes, is that the Fed doesn’t know – because the policy should depend on how the economy behaves over the coming months, which is itself uncertain.

Communicating this policy, however, is a problem.

So much is riding on the profile of future interest-rate changes that analysts examine every utterance of Fed Chair Janet Yellen and her colleagues for hidden meanings, accidental disclosures and preformed intentions that the Fed is (for some reason) keeping to itself. To cope with this, the Fed should keep the emphasis on developments in the economy and dispel any notion of a schedule.

At the moment, keeping an open mind matters even more than usual. Aspects of this expansion are troubling, and the causes aren’t yet clear.

Growth is steady but slow. The economy is back at full employment, as conventionally measured, yet there’s little sign of inflation in wages or prices.

Broader measures, such as the number of people working part-time who’d prefer fulltime jobs, point to continuing slack in the labor market.

The Fed was right to start tightening monetary policy before inflation has begun to rise, because the policy works with a lag. Waiting too long is risky, because it would call for bigger and more abrupt in-

creases in interest rates later.

Nonetheless, the Fed should be careful not to get too far ahead of what’s happening to prices.

A main factor in deciding what “too far” means is how willing the Fed would be to let inflation rise temporarily above its 2 percent target. The more relaxed it is about a brief overshoot, the more patient it can afford to be about the profile of interest-rate increases.

Yellen has said the Fed’s target is just that, not a ceiling – implying that brief overshoots will be tolerated, just as persistent undershoots have been. But the inflation projections bundled with the Fed’s policy announcements don’t appear to back that up. Inflation comes very slowly back up to target, but not beyond.

Mixed messages of this kind aren’t helpful. And the signaling of the Fed’s inflation expectations isn’t the only such case. Yellen often has said that interest-rate policy will be “data-dependent,” rather than following a pre-determined schedule.

Yet Dennis Lockhart, president of the Atlanta Fed, just told an interviewer something else. “Moving up gradually means not every meeting, in all likelihood,” he said. “The rate of rising interest rates will be more like every other meeting.”

“Every other meeting” isn’t data-dependent.

Falling unemployment justified the Fed’s move Dec. 16. Yet here, too, the calendar clearly played a role: The Fed had long hinted at a rise by the year’s end, leaving investors almost certain it was coming.

From now on, data, not dates, should guide the policy – and comments suggesting anything else would be better left unsaid.

For Burlington Central, entering the Dundee-Crown Charger Classic with an 8-0 record was nice, but the fashion in which it got there was even more impressive.

The Rockets had not played a game in which their margin of victory finished within less than 14 points – two of which one would have to do a double take to actually believe, A 111-38 win over Crystal Lake Central in its season opener and a 76-5 win over Rockford Christian for its eighth win of the season.

But that changed Saturday.

Crystal Lake South did not let Burlington Central hold a lead and the Rockets were forced to put a tally in their loss column for the first time this year with a 42-39 loss.

Coach Mark Smith was clearly frustrated with the effort, but hopes this is a wakeup call for his group.

“I’ll put it this way. Hopefully when we get to the postseason, we look back on this as a learning lesson,” Smith said.

“We hadn’t really had any close games before this and we weren’t able to execute. There’s no doubt the effort needs to be better, but, like I said, I hope we can use this in a good way.”

The confidence level of the Rockets still seemed to be extremely high after the loss, despite not having a lead at any point.

Senior Kayla Ross had been through struggles before in the very same gym. Last season, the Rockets also lost their first game of the season at the Charger Classic. In fact, they left Carpentersville with two blemishes in the loss column, but went on an 16-game winning streak from that point.

Needless to say, Ross would like the team to build a similar streak after the program’s latest defeat.

We know we’re better than we played (Saturday) and we know one loss now doesn’t end of season like it would in March.”

Rather than continue to blow teams out – in a somewhat

down year for the Big Northern Conference – Ross added that tough conference games, in hostile environments, could be exactly what the Rockets need to see.

She noted that there was never any worry, despite knowing that a close game would eventually come.

“We have girls on this team that are experienced and don’t get flustered in important

games,” Ross said. “We are still very confident that this is a team that has what it takes to do some special things. It’s one loss. It’s really not the end of the world.

“To be honest, it doesn’t help when you don’t have close games often. We’re looking forward to playing some of the good teams in our conference and could be used as motivation to not feel this way any-

more.”

As disappointed and off its game as Burlington Central was Saturday – and it was quite off key for a team that put up 111 points in its first game playing together – Smith, Ross and everyone associated with the Rockets girls basketball program would much rather have had that first loss now then in those oh so fun elimination games come March.

MONTINI CHRISTMAS TOURNAMENT: MONTINI 57, BATAVIA 52

Senior forward puts up double-double, but Batavia struggles late LOMBARD – No one gave Batavia a chance.

The Bulldogs were not only playing the top seed of the Montini Christmas Tournament, but it was the host Broncos. It was essentially a road game for the Bulldogs, but Hannah Frazier wasn’t going to back down.

Frazier and her Batavia teammates went toe-to-toe with unbeaten Montini, but the Broncos did just enough down the stretch, adding late free throws to send the Bulldogs to the 57-52 loss Monday night.

Despite the loss, Batavia (13-3) still can salvage fifth place in the tournament, as they take on another tough opponent today with University of Illinois-bound Ali Andrews and Huntley waiting.

Bulldogs coach Kevin Jensen couldn’t ask for much more from the St. Louis commit Frazier. Her 27 points and 11 rebounds were both gamehighs. Her final bucket of the evening tied the game at 49 with just under two minutes to play.

“Our effort was really top notch tonight,” Jensen said.

“I don’t think there are many teams that play harder than us. We did a lot of really, really good things tonight and had some things slip away.

I’m sure there were a lot of people watching in that gym thinking Montini was going to run away with it in the third quarter. We wouldn’t let that happen and I give the girls so much credit for the way they grew as a team tonight.”

That third quarter Jensen spoke of saw his team score just one point in the first 6:48 of the frame after Hailey Orman banked in a 3-pointer just before the first half buzzer.

Frazier made a free throw to open the half, but a 7-0 Montini run stretched the Broncos’ lead to its biggest of the game at that point, 40-33.

“We have big dreams and big goals with this team and playing that way against a team like that only does good things for us,” Frazier said.

“A result like this may sting at first because we were right there, but it also shows that those big goals we have aren’t unrealistic at all.”

The biggest basket of the game came after Frazier tied

the game at 49. Montini coach Jason Nichols called a timeout and ran his best 3-point shooter, Lea Kerstein, off a couple off screens.

Kerstein knocked down the long-range basket with 1:25 left and Batavia never got the game back tied or led after that shot. Kerstein finished with a team-high 19 points on five 3-pointers.

Batavia also had trouble, at times, defending 6-foot-5 center Lindsay Jarosinski.

The sophomore finished with 15 points, grabbed nine rebounds, had six blocks and altered at least three or four more shots.

Unlike Chevy Chase’s “Fletch,” however, Matt Fletcher didn’t have to dream of being a star, because he was one Tuesday afternoon.

Fletcher scored a career-best 21 points to lead Marmion to a 59-50 victory over Glenbrook North in a second-round game in the 88th annual Chuck Dayton Holiday Tournament.

“They were flying at the ball and trapping hard and I went to the open spots,” Fletcher said. “When the traps came I was the next one in the rotation so it was one quick dribble and then right to the hole, and going up strong is something I’ve been working on lately.”

Marmion (7-4) looked like it was going to blow out the Spartans as the Cadets took a 26-11 lead after a Hunter Weber 3-pointer midway through the second quarter.

Victory wouldn’t come easily, however, as the defensive pressure applied by the Spartans caused fits, forcing 19 turnovers while allowing them to rally all the way back to within 44-43 early in the fourth quarter.

“They had three possessions with a chance to take the lead, but our guys just dug down deep and played defense,” Marmion coach Joe Currie said. “I was very proud of what they did. Some people wonder how they do it, but it’s just the will they have. They play possession by possession.”

Glenbrook North (7-3) trailed 30-20 at halftime, but scored the first eight points of the second half to pull within 30-28 before the Cadets closed the third quarter on an 11-4 run to take a 44-34 lead.

The Spartans then needed just 87 seconds to score the first nine points of the fourth quarter to pull within 44-43, but the Cadets never allowed them to take the lead.

“We took a hit, but we weathered the storm,” Fletcher said. “One of our biggest strengths is we never get down

on ourselves. They came at us, but we settled down, regrouped and went back to the stuff we knew how to do.”

The Cadets answered with a 12-0 run to take a commanding 56-43 lead with 1:47 left in the game.

Weber added 14 points, Jon Young had 14 rebounds and seven assists, Myles Schoonover scored eight points off the bench and Mick Sullivan had six points and nine rebounds for the Cadets.

Marmion will play Geneva, which beat Ridgewood, 44-37, in a semifinal today.

The Vikings had a difficult time putting away the Rebels, but used a stingy defense to earn the victory.

The Ridgewood duo of Zac Rzewnicki and Keith Kerrigan combined for 34 points in a win against Eisenhower on Saturday, but the Vikings limited the two players to a combined 7-for-31 shooting, including just 4-of-19 beyond the arc.

“We told our guys that if they’re going to be beat us, it’s going to be by taking contested threes,” Geneva coach Phil Ralston said. “Other than a few times, they shot contested shots period.”

Ridgewood (5-6) only shot 25 percent (13-of-52) from the field but was able to hang with the Vikings for most of the game by forcing 16 turnovers.

Geneva (9-2) saw its lead dwindle to 30-27 after a Rzewnicki 3-pointer midway through the third quarter, but the Vikings held the Spartans scoreless the remainder of the quarter while increasing their lead to 36-27.

The Rebels pulled to within 36-32 after a couple of baskets early in the fourth quarter, but the Vikings attacked the basket, going on an 8-0 run sparked by back-to-back layups by Matt Johnston.

Johnston was the lone Geneva player in double figures.

He led the team with 15 points while Sean Chambers scored eight as the Vikings shot a sizzling 56 percent (18-of-32) from the field.

Drew Klaus and Dom Navigato both collected seven rebounds to help the Vikings out rebound the Rebels, 35-21.

PLANO – The Kaneland boys basketball team – the No. 5 seed at the Plano Christmas Classic – let an 11-point lead halfway through the third quarter slip away against No. 4 Newark.

The foul-plagued Norsemen then produced a huge fourth quarter and ended up beating the Knights, 66-62, on Monday – Day 3 of the tournament.

Kaneland dropped to 6-2 and will play No. 9 Genoa-Kingston today. With the win, Newark, which is on an 11-game winning streak, improved to 11-1 and will play No. 1 LaSalle-Peru today, as well.

“That was a great high school basketball game,” Kaneland coach Joe Conroy said. “I thought we were doing all the things we wanted to. We talked about how they are a really, really good basketball team and how they were going to play right until the end. I think we took some bad shots, and defensively, our rotations weren’t where

they needed to be ... (but) I’m super impressed with how they played.”

Kaneland’s largest lead of the game was 42-31 after a conventional three-point play from Dylan Vaca with 4:11 left in the third quarter. Newark then closed the quarter on an 8-2 run, led by two 3-pointers from Steve McGrath. He finished with a season-high 18 points.

Kaneland led 44-39 entering the final frame before the Norsemen outscored the Knights 27-18 in the fourth quarter.

Back-to-back buckets from Evan Schomer (17 points) gave Newark the 51-50 lead. It was the first time it led since the middle of the second quarter.

The game was tied three more times after that, but McGrath, Dylan Patrick and Mitch Schmidt hit free throws in the closing minute of the contest.

Vaca led Kaneland with 23 points and Ryan David finished with 11 points.

“Defensively, (Kaneland is) pretty tough ... they guard

everything,” Newark coach Rick Tollefson said. “Things started working for us and we put the ball into play.”

Pontiac Tournament: Curie 75, St. Charles North 47: At Pontiac, St. Charles North was one of just two games that were played at the tournament Monday – the rest were canceled due to power outages because of inclement weather. Mikey Schroeder scored 13 points in the loss.

Coach Tom Poulin confirmed that the tournament schedule has been rearranged due to the canceled games and the North Stars (2-6) will take on Lockport at 2:30 p.m. today.

It looked like the Bulldogs would’ve rather been in bed.

Batavia was overwhelmed from the opening tip by De La Salle as the Meteors cruised to a 63-45 victory Monday in the second round of the Jack Tosh Holiday Classic at York High School.

“I thought we got beat in all

facets of the game,” Batavia head coach Jim Nazos said.

“We turned it over, we gave up offensive rebounds, we got beat in transition. We have to get better or we’ll never be we want to be.”

The Bulldogs (6-5) couldn’t get any traction as the Meteors (7-4) opened the second quarter on a 7-0 run and pushed the lead to 15 at halftime. Batavia settled into a full-court trapping press in the second half, but couldn’t string together consistent defensive stops to get back into the game.

“We just didn’t play tough today. They jumped us early,” said Coffey, who was a member of the Jack Tosh Classic All-Tournament team last season. “I think we’re usually ready no matter what the circumstances are. I just think today we came out a little bit lazy and that hurt us.”

One positive of the tournament structure is that Batavia has the chance to get right back on the floor as the Bulldogs will face Lane Tech today in another early morning tilt at 9 a.m.

Saints build lead off big third quarter, hold on for win

By JARED BIRCHFIELD editorial@kcchronicle.com HINSDALE – The St. Charles East boys basketball team’s strong offensive effort in the middle quarters of its Hinsdale Central Holiday Classic game against Chicago Urban Prep Monday gave them a comfortable 17-point lead at the start of the fourth quarter.

But the Saints had to hold off a furious comeback attempt by the Lions to preserve their 74-58 victory.

Two Ben Talarczyk free throws a minute into the final period pushed the Saints margin to 63-42. Urban Prep’s Jayden Gatsby’s back-to-back layups ignited a 14-2 run. The sophomore guard scored eight of his 14 points during the Lions’ comeback attempt.

With 2:28 left in the game, Arron Boyd connected on a free throw to pull Urban Prep within nine, 65-56. But the Lions were unable to sustain the run, scoring only two more points the rest of the way.

“Their pressure late really bothered us. They did a good job of hanging around,” East coach Pat Woods said.

Urban Prep (3-7) led the Saints, 13-12, at the end of the first quarter. A Zach Hondlik trey at the 6:03 mark of the second quarter put East back on top, 17-16, and it never lost that lead. Talarczyk followed with a 3-pointer of his own.

The Saints (8-3) then start-

ed working the ball inside and steadily widened the lead to 3224 at halftime.

“We got off to a slow start.

But in the second and third quarters, I thought we really played well.” Woods said. ”We got 27 points in the third quarter, which is nice. We shot the ball real well from the field.

Overall, we were 65-percent from the field. I thought we

were taking good percentage shots.

“We were trying to get the ball inside a little more because the way they were playing the ball screens, it opened up the middle for us and that’s what we were looking for.”

Woods lauded his team’s accurate free throw shooting.

East connected on 12 of 15 attempts from the charity stripe

while Urban Prep converted only 7 of 17.

Fred Cleveland was the biggest thorn in the Saints’ side, leading all scorers with 18 points.

East’s Evan DiLeonardi chipped in 16, while sophomore Justin Hardy led with 18 and J.T. Ford added 14. East plays Crete Monee at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the second consolation bracket semifinal.

New Years Eve is the holiday that is represented by a clock. Some say a ticking clock is the heart of the home. Since modern digital clocks don’t click, every home should have an old clock. The tall case or grandfather clock can be found in antique and new versions. But check to be sure the clock case is not more than 8 feet high unless you have a room with an extra high ceiling. There are many other types of antique clocks that might be your favorite. Look for the banjo clock, named for its shape, first made about 1800, or the rectangular carriage clock found after the 1820s. Children like Germancarved wooden cuckoo clocks made since the 1700s or even more modern plastic versions. A late Victorian home probably had a black mantel clock placed above the fireplace or an octagonal schoolhouse clock with a “drop” section hanging below the face. The round alarm clock didn’t appear until the 1880s, but there still are some being made. And 20th-century styles include plain wooden Mission or simple Art Deco clocks. Today clocks come in many strange shapes and sizes. There even is an alarm clock that rolls off the table to the floor so you have to get out of bed to turn it off. But these clocks only tell time - they don’t tick. *** Q: I’d like information about a treadle sewing machine I’ve had for several years. It has a metal plaque attached that says “Manufacd by the American Button-Hole Overseaming and Sewing Machine Co., Phila. Pa.” Patent dates of 1850, 1865, 1866, and 1868 are listed. The machine is missing the bobbin but is otherwise complete. What can you tell me about it?

A: The American Button Hole & Overseaming Company was founded in Philadelphia in 1863. Later the name became the American B-H O & Sewing Machine Co. and still later it was called the American Sewing Machine Co. The company

patented several improvements to sewing machines in the 1870s and 1880s. Its early machines included improvements patented by others.

The company was in business until about 1896. *** Q: I have a three-piece casserole set marked “Vertex.” Can you identify the maker and age?

A: Your casserole was made by Vertex China of Pomona, California.

The company was founded in 1989 and is still in business. It makes china for restaurants, hotels, caterers, cruise lines and other industries. *** Q: Does an engraved name on a pewter trophy decrease the value of the trophy? We have tennis trophies from the ‘50s and ‘60s that were my aunt’s from the Bay Head Yacht Club in New Jersey.

A: The trophies have little value if they are pewter. The value depends on what’s engraved on it. If it lists former winners, the name of someone famous adds value. If the trophies are silver or silver plate, they would be more desirable. Even when engraved, a sterling-silver trophy can sell for meltdown weight, or the inscription can be buffed off. *** Q: I bought a child’s two-piece flatware set at a garage sale. Pictures of Bambi are on the handles.

Does my radio have any value? *** A: Coca-Cola advertising memorabilia and collectibles are almost as old as the beverage itself. Since 1886, the year John Pemberton’s Coca-Cola syrup was first served in an Atlanta soda fountain, Coca-Cola

has been advertised through signs, newspaper ads, coupons, bottles, trays, calendars, lamps and clocks.

The company first used radios in the 1930s. They were shaped like bottles and are worth lots of money today. Cooler-shaped radios were made in the 1950s and vending machine transistor radios appeared in the 1960s. The first can-shaped radio was a 1971-’72 special offer. It was a transistor radio made

by General Electric that cost $5.95 with a proof-of-purchase. The radio had a 2 1/4-inch magnetic speaker, used a nine-volt battery and picked up local AM radio stations. Many versions of can radios, including FM versions, were made until the ‘80s.

They are popular but common and worth $5 to $25. Examples with the original box fall in the higher end of the range. *** Tip: A grandfather clock should be cleaned, oiled and adjusted every five years. 18 Children older than 6 months should get a flu shot annually

• Note to readers : This column is an update of one that originally appeared in October 2012.

Dear Dr. K: I know my child is supposed to get a flu shot each year. But how much good does it really do, and is it safe?

Dear Reader: Every fall and winter, parents face the question: Should my child get an influenza (flu) shot?

There are several important reasons why children older than 6 months should get a flu shot every year: • Influenza can be dangerous, even for healthy children. Flu can

be dangerous for children, particularly those with asthma, diabetes or other chronic health problems. But even healthy children can get very sick – and possibly die – from influenza. The H1N1 “swine flu” virus that has been circulating since the epidemic of 2009-10 is particularly dangerous for children.

• You can’t catch the flu from a flu shot. The flu shot, given by needle, contains virus that has been killed. Despite misconceptions some parents have, the flu shot cannot infect your child and cause the flu.

There now is a nasal spray flu vaccine made with weakened (but still alive) flu virus, for children who hate shots.

While nasal congestion and a low-grade fever can occur (in about one in 20 children), the illness is milder and briefer than the flu. If your child is between 6 months and 2 years or has a weakened immune system, however, he or she should get the flu shot, not the nasal spray vaccine.

Some children (and adults) who get the flu shot also get a mild fever, an aching muscle where the flu shot was given and feel tired for a day or so.

That’s not because the

That’s good news, because that’s what we want the immune system to do.

• The flu shot is safe .

Years of experience have shown the flu vaccine is very safe. There is no evidence thimerosal, a common vaccine preservative, is dangerous for children. But preservative-free preparations are available.

A particular flu vaccine used in 1976 did seem to cause a few cases of the neurological condition called Guillain-Barre syndrome.

But this same condition can follow getting the flu itself. Indeed, it happens more often after the flu than after getting a flu shot. Since the flu shot protects against the flu, your child is less likely to get this rare condition if they get the flu vaccine.

• The flu shot protects more than your child.

Children are germ-producing machines. Your child may weather the flu fine – but what about others who could catch the flu from your child?

Although there are a few unusual circumstances in which your pediatrician might recommend against a flu shot, the flu shot almost always is a safe treatment.

It is not too late to get the shot: Flu season will continue for another three months. And the shot can make all the difference in your child’s health.

‘Wild’ teen must seek honest communication with mother Dr. Wallace : My problem is my mom is trying to totally run my life.

Her reason is probably my older sister was no angel.

She was into everything from staying out late at wild parties, to sex, booze and smoking pot. So now my mom is really trying to prevent me from having any fun at all, and I’m tired of being a goody-goody.

I do have a couple of friends who are thought of as a bit wild, but we are all popular and have fun.

Sometimes we go to parties (my mom thinks I’m just over at a friend’s house) and once in a while I drink a little, but I know when to stop and pop a couple of peppermints.

I’m only 15, and my mother is all hyped up because she saw me kissing this guy who is 16, but looks a bit older. Now I’m grounded for two weeks, and she wants me to promise I won’t see this guy again. I really like this guy and even though I promised, I will see him again because he throws great parties.

My mom also doesn’t like me to hang around the teen hangout (no drinks are allowed there) because there are too many boys there.

loves you and wants only what is best for you, and would prefer you were not a “wild child” like your older sister.

I can see extracting promises from you would have no effect because you would have no intention of keeping them. Nor would grounding work for you. This will only cause your relationship with your mother to deteriorate further.

If your mother had written for advice regarding your behavior, I would have recommended she do everything in her power to improve communication with you, including seeing a family counselor or therapist with you. This person could help her set reasonable limits for you that you will honor and respect.

However, since you’re the

one who wrote the letter, I only can ask you to take the initiative to improve your relationship with your mom.

She is right (and deep in your heart, you know it) to want to rein you in and control your “little wildness,” which is a bit much for a 15-year-old. You did not mention how your older sister’s life has turned out, but it probably is not as successful and happy as it should have been.

My hope for you and your mother is an honest “mother-daughter communication” can be established. This is the foundation of a successful family. You should not make any promise you do not intend to keep. Instead, have an honest discussion in order to reach a reasonable compromise with Mom: Some partying is OK, but sex, drinking and drugs are off limits. And homework should be completed on a regular basis.

You are heading for a life full of trouble and misery if you do not have limits on your behavior. I feel if you didn’t understand this instinctively, you wouldn’t have contacted me.

How do you decide?

First, work out what holdings partner needs to make each choice the winner, and consider whether either is consistent with the auction and play so far.

In this deal, for example, East has to choose a play at trick four. South is in four hearts. West leads the diamond king, under which East encourages with his 10. West continues with the diamond jack and diamond queen. East overtakes the queen with his ace and, when declarer follows throughout, what should East do next?

North used Stayman. He planned, if South had rebid two diamonds, to jump to three hearts, employing the Smolen convention, to show five spades, four hearts and game-forcing values. But when South indicated four hearts, North jumped to game in that suit.

East could shift to his singleton spade, hoping partner could win with the ace and give him a ruff for down two. Or East could lead his last diamond, hoping to generate a trump trick.

As always, check the points. The dummy holds 11, East has five, and West has already produced six. That leaves 18 unaccounted for, but South showed 15-17 with his opening bid.

So, West has only 1-3 more points. As he cannot have the spade ace, East should lead his fourth diamond. When West ruffs with his heart king, and dummy overruffs with the ace, East takes a trump trick.

Dear Abby : All children are beautiful to their parents. My three children are of mixed race and get a lot of attention because of it.

The boys are aloof about random compliments they receive from strangers. However, I’m worried about the pressure it may put on my daughter to be “pretty.”

I care more about my daughter’s character than her looks, but I’m concerned if I say that to these people, it will come off as rude.

Also, I don’t want her to think I don’t think she’s pretty. How can I respond in a way that isn’t rude to well-intentioned strangers, but at the same time allows me to make a statement about the importance of character over beauty?
