D-304 teachers get nearly $35K in grants Geneva Academic Foundation OKs 11 grant requests

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The Geneva Academic Foundation recently approved 11 grants of nearly $35,000 for requests by Geneva District 304 teachers.

The foundation is a nonprofit organization that raises money to pay for educational extras that are not included in the school district’s budget.

GAF President Laura Zuzuly said this year, teachers made 22 grant requests of more than $184,000.

“It was simply not possible

for GAF to fund everything,” Zuzuly wrote in an email.

“GAF is limited in the amount of grants that it can fund by the amount of money that it raises for the annual fund in the year prior to the awarding of the grants. ... Our fundraising is very, very important.”

Many of the grants not funded were large technology requests, and some were items the school district plans to purchase on its own, according to Zuzuly’s email.

Three of the 11 grants approved were for Geneva Middle School North and South.

They covered 20 hot plates for hands-on science activities and 24 ASUS Tab 8 tablets, which will allow students to see a video of a teacher solving example problems while

the teacher is giving personal attention to other students.

Also, there was a request for 16 Wacom Pen Tablets for Flipped to allow teachers to create presentations and videos to engage and inform students any time, anywhere.

For Geneva High School, one Wacom Cintiq Interactive Pen Display with Mac Mini will allow design students to try out technology that actually is being used in the visual arts world and media.

Also for the high school science classes, there will be 14 motorized carts to track couplers for lab experiments involving motion of objects and forces of motion.

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – With a lopper in hand, Geneva resident Allison Willman on Saturday was removing nonnative plants, such as honeysuckle and buckthorn, from Bliss Woods Forest Preserve.

Willman said she knows the importance of removing nonnative plants from an environment and letting native plants flourish.

“It’s important to have biodiversity,” she said.

Saturday’s event attracted several volunteers. Along with cutting and stacking invasive shrubs, they also applied herbicide to ensure that the shrubs wouldn’t grow back.

Mary Ochsenschlager, volunteer steward for the Bliss Woods Forest Preserve, has been leading habitat restoration work days at Bliss Woods for the past seven years. She was St. Charles Park District’s longtime naturalist before she retired.

“It is worth the effort to remove the nonnative plants and keep spots where native plants

ancestry among organisms for the biology and anatomy and physiology students. The skulls also will help students understand the relationship between structure and function in living organisms.

Another grant covered transforming the high school auditorium into a cabaret for a day for French and choral students to experience how music reflects the culture, economy and attitudes of a time.

Also, another GAF grant will pay for two sets of new camera studio equipment for the high school TV studio to update 10-year-old equipment.

Harrison Street Elementary School will get two standup desks and stools for students who have a hard time sitting for any length of time.

“It is real nice to come back and see the difference,” said Duy, who works for the St. Charles Park District.

Andrew Ochsenschlager said his mother passed to him a love and respect for nature.

“She instilled that in me,” he said.

And all elementary schools will get replacement tunnel mats for the Heart Adventure Course, which allows children to move through four chambers of the heart in a larger-than-life setting. The tunnel mats replace the original purchase by the foundation 17 years ago.

The foundation also provided a grant to cover support costs for the PRIDE volunteers, the senior volunteer program in the schools.

The foundation is seeking to increase its Viking Voyage to Excellence Endowment Campaign to $1 million to provide a more stable source of revenue for grants, Zuzuly’s email states. Information is available online at the foundation’s website, www.gafgeneva.org.

BATAVIA – Firefighters on Friday responded to a chimney fire at Suncast in Batavia, with crews arriving to find flames coming from a steel “chimney/ vent” pipe on the roof, according to a news release from the Batavia Fire Department.

Suncast is at 701 N. Kirk Road, Batavia.

No damage was done to the structure or interior of the building, the release stated.

According to its website, Suncast designs, develops and manufactures “stylish products with practical features for the whole home.”

It lists products for the patio and yard, home and garden, sheds and storage and snow tools, among other items.

The release indicated that firefighters were dis-

patched at 5:40 p.m., and the fire was under control by 6:05 p.m.

The first unit was on the scene at 5:44 p.m.

Firefighters determined that a fire had started in a vent stack from a furnace used to burn off powder coating from steel parts, the release stated.

Buildup in the vent pipe apparently ignited within the vent stack.

Crews were sent to the roof to extinguish the fire because there was a lack of access to the oven from the interior, the release stated, and, after applications of dry chemical agent, the fire was put out.

Suncast representatives remained at the scene to watch the oven, the release stated, and safety locks were unable to be opened because of high temperatures.

The release indicated that employees would repair and check the oven once temperatures were low enough for access.

No further problems were encountered, the release noted.

The foundation has accepted sick and elderly felines from local animal control agencies, most recently Chicago Animal Care and Control, Braun said.

That was about the only downside at the close of a glorious week for the Saints at the Chuck Dayton Holiday Tournament, culminating with Saturday night’s 76-52 win against host DeKalb in the championship game.

East (12-1) claimed its 10th straight victory and won its four tournament games by an average of 31 points in its debut season in the tradition-rich DeKalb event.

“It’s a blast,” East senior guard Jake Asquini said. “Winning’s always fun. Our team gets along so well, on and off the court, so when we’re winning, it just makes it even better.”

The Saints encountered precious little resistance throughout the tournament but some materialized during the second quarter with senior point guard and tournament MVP Cole Gentry sidelined with his second foul.

DeKalb (8-2) quickly slashed East’s lead from 31-20 to 31-28, prompting a Saints timeout.

But East steadied itself in a hurry, slapping the Barbs with a 15-2 run to close the second quarter, featuring a rimmed-in 3-pointer by James McQuillan to end the half with a 46-30 lead.

“I think that was really important,” McQuillan said.

“That was one of our first times in the tournament we faced some adversity so for us to step up and answer their run was huge, and I think is just a testament of how good we can be as a team.”

Asquini went 6 of 10 from 3-point land and led the Saints with 20 points. He accounted for half of the Saints’ 12 3-point makes on the night.

“My teammates always do an amazing job of finding me the ball,” Asquini said. “They created most of my shots so I can’t thank them enough. But I like this gym. I get a good feel for it once I see one or two go in.”

McQuillan added 18 points and took a leading role running the offense with Gentry out for the end of the second quarter and almost all of the third quarter with foul trouble.

“I thought we had a really good gameplan against Cole,” DeKalb coach Al Biancalana said. “We know that he’s going to make some shots but we really wanted to be dedicated to taking away his penetration.

We just did not do a good job on McQuillan. McQuillan continually drove the ball, straight-

line drives he got to the basket, and I thought that was the difference. … He got into the paint any time he wanted, and that really hurt us.”

Gentry was held to nine points but the Saints again flashed the depth that’s enabled them to rip off a double-digit win streak.

Center Jack Bronec and McQuillan joined Gentry on the all-tournament team while reserve guard Jake Clodi scored seven of his 10 points during the second quarter.

“I’ll be honest, I was kind of glad Cole was in foul trouble because we need to do things without him on the floor,” East coach Pat Woods said. “I just think the depth that we have, we got a little flustered for about 45 seconds, but we regrouped and went on a [big] run and hit some 3s.”

McQuillan’s defense impressed Woods throughout the tournament and his ability to lend ball-handling support to Gentry and backup point guard Jeremy Champine also caught

his coach’s eye.

“James is incredibly multi-faceted,” Woods said.

“He can play four positions on the floor, and that’s what makes him so versatile. He’s very smooth the way he does it, too.”

Moline won the tournament’s third-place game over Glenbrook North, while Marmion fell to Hampshire in the fifth-place game of the 16-team event, 58-52. The Cadets were led by 19 points from guard Jordan Glasgow.

Sour start too much to overcome

LOMBARD – The first minute of the Geneva girls basketball team’s matchup with Benet proved to be a microcosm of the things to come for the Vikings.

Benet senior forward Emily Schramek sank a 3-point shot on the Redwings’ first possession of the game, and then junior guard Kathleen Doyle snagged Geneva’s ensuing inbound pass and finished with an easy layup to put Benet up, 5-0, less than 60 seconds into the contest.

A sour start was too much for Geneva to overcome, as it fell, 69-52, to Benet on Saturday at the Montini Christmas Tournament. The Redwings (15-0) unleashed a furious fullcourt press that netted a flurry of turnovers for Geneva (11-1) that set Benet up with easy baskets in transition. Benet quickly built a 29-15 lead in the first quarter and refused to relinquish control.

Although both teams came into the game unbeaten, Geneva coach Sarah Meadows knew Benet would present an enormous challenge.

“We knew we were going to have turnovers,” Meadows said. “Would I have liked to win? Absolutely. I would have liked the margin to be a little less, but overall I’m glad with the heart we played with, we never stopped, we never quit, and I would like to play them again.”

Despite facing a 20-point deficit at halftime, Geneva continued to fight. Led by senior forward Abby Novak, who paced the Vikings with 21 points, Geneva outscored Benet in the second half, but still fell short. Novak thought that her team’s resilience was key despite the lopsided score.

It’s good for us to see where we are, see what we can improve on, so that helped us out.”

Geneva played without 6-foot-2-inch sophomore forward Grace Loberg, who had a volleyball conflict. Loberg’s absence required other players to step in to fill her void. Freshman guards Margaret Whitley (11 points) and Stephanie Hart (eight) provided steady scoring from the backcourt while Novak took care of business in the paint.

“Of course we miss Grace, no question about it,” Meadows said. “We’re not a team that’s just going to stalemate on that, we’re not going to think about it, we’ve got to move on.”

Meadows believes that Novak’s production will not slow

down in the foreseeable future.

“Abby has played two games back-to-back that are lights out,” Meadows said.

“Super proud of her. She’s capable of that honestly every game. She’s playing huge for us. That’s what we need.”

Benet senior guard Emily Eshoo led all scorers with 24 points, and she was complemented by contributions from Doyle (17) and Schramek (14).

Although it was disheartening to lose by such a wide margin, Meadows is confident that the Vikings will benefit from playing such a quality opponent.

“This is exactly what we wanted,” Meadows said. “We wanted to win the first game and go to the right (side of the tournament bracket). We wanted to play some competitive games. We want this experience, we want the experience out of this important game.”

The Vikings will continue tournament play today against Huntley.

Dear Abby: I’m a single mom.

In this deal, South is in four spades. West leads the heart ace and continues with the heart king.

What should declarer do?

West would normally have held an eight-card suit for his four-heart opening, but he hoped to silence his opponents. North had too many points to pass and nothing better to do than double.

If South had passed, the penalty would have been 500 for down two. But hoping that his partner had four-card spade support, he advanced with four spades.

South ruffed the second heart, cashed his spade ace, and led a spade to dummy’s queen. West’s discard caused declarer to deliberate for a few moments.

South eventually realized that he needed to take these 10 tricks: three clubs, two diamonds and five trumps.

Declarer cashed dummy’s diamond ace-king and club kingqueen, then played a club to his ace. When East had to follow suit, South ruffed a club with dummy’s spade king and called for the heart nine.

If East had ruffed high with his spade jack, declarer would have discarded; and when East threw his last diamond, South ruffed for his 10th trick via a coup en passant.
