In Wednesday’s paper, we’ll look ahead to the new year and highlight what area residents can expect to happen in their respective towns.

Of course, those stories alone won’t encompass all of what will happen – or that we’ll write about – in 2014. And that’s where you, the reader, comes in.

Geneva resident Sam Hill found an envelope outside of his home on South Hampton Court on Thursday morning.

Inside the envelope was an iTunes gift card to “Samantha” from “Uncle Jimmy.”

Sam has been trying to find the owner of the gift card so the item could be returned to whom it belongs.

Concealed Carry Act signs to be posted at City Hall KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – New signs will be posted at St. Charles City Hall starting Jan. 1 to remind visitors that firearms are prohibited on city property.

By posting the signs, the city will be in compliance with Public Act 93-63, also called the Firearm Concealed Carry Act, which became state law July 9.

The law, among other provisions, bars guns from government buildings and re-

quires municipalities to post standardized signs that have been approved by the Illinois State Police.

The signs depict a gun circled in red with a slash through the center, similar to a no-smoking sign.

Woman agrees to community service

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com A 22-year-old woman has agreed to do community service for her involvement in residential burglaries that occurred last summer in Batavia, according to Kane County court records.

Sharonda Y. Moore was one of four people charged in connection with the burglaries, which happened in August on the city’s far southeast side.

The affected residences were in

the 900 to 1200 blocks of Woodland Hills Road and in the 1600 block of Wagner Road, police have said.

Moore faced one count of possession of stolen property, a laptop.

Court records show she entered into a deferred prosecution agreement with the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office this month.

The agreement ends Dec. 16, 2014.

According to the document, Moore must live in Illinois

through the agreement, cannot use illegal drugs or other mood-altering substances, must submit to drug testing and – among other conditions – not violate criminal statutes.

Additionally, she must complete 100 hours of community service, enroll in the Theft Awareness Program and enroll in college, the agreement states.

She is expected in court Dec. 16, 2014, at which time her compliance with the agreement will be determined.

STORIES OF THE YEAR CONSTRUCTION ARCH STIRS CONTROVERSY DONE ON RT. 64 TRAFFIC SLOWED FOR MONTHS ST. CHARLES – A road-widening project along Route 64 in St. Charles that lasted more than a year concluded in the fall.

The Illinois Department of Transportation began a reconstruction and widening project on Route 64 between Seventh Avenue in St. Charles to Route 59 in West Chicago in April 2012.

Business owners and city officials celebrated a ribbon-cutting event in September to mark the completion of construction from Seventh Avenue in St. Charles to Kirk Road.

The second phase of con-

struction from 38th Avenue to Route 59 in West Chicago was completed around Oct. 1. Lanes were widened from four to six in that area.

The construction project caused traffic delays, with occasional lane closures. Several business owners stated that the construction project disrupted their businesses.

Many business owners were present at two ribbon-cutting ceremonies that took place to celebrate the re-opening of portions of Route 64.

BATAVIA – City officials created controversy after approving a $116,000 arch that was installed on North River Street in downtown Batavia as part of that street’s newly completed streetscape project.

Some residents and aldermen criticized the project for its cost, as well as the project’s design.

The arch was installed in June at the intersection of River and Wilson streets at the entrance to North River Street, which in 2012 was transformed into a curbless street where pedestrians have priority over cars. Aldermen voted in April to approve the arch, prior to an election that ousted three incumbent aldermen from office.

“It looks pretty much the way I thought it would be,” said 4th Ward Alderman Jamie Saam, who was elected in April. “For me, it was more the cost, not the design. It

will be something that draws attention, that’s for sure. The original amount of $55,000 sounded more reasonable.”

Originally, $55,000 was allocated toward the project’s cost, Batavia city engineer Noel Basquin said. That number was not meant to be an estimate of the project’s cost, he said.

Basquin said the arch’s cost – including lights – was

$116,000.

The arch features a metal halo on top of wooden supports. Batavia resident Sylvia Keppel, who helped stage a protest in April against the installation of the arch, said the arch looked worse than the proposed rendering, noting she was concerned about the arch’s price tag.

“It’s hideous,” she had said.

ELBURN STATION CAMERAS IN THE COURTROOM GETS GREEN LIGHT

STORIES OF THE YEAR GENEVA – For the first time, news cameras were allowed inside Kane County courtrooms in 2013.

The Kane County Chronicle was granted access for the first such event in the county.

Photo editor Sandy Bressner was allowed to take still photos in July at a status hearing for a civil case between the city of St. Charles and Clifford McIlvaine.

The process requires media organizations wishing to provide such coverage to follow a process so that several parties, including the judge, can grant the organization extended media coverage. Kane County became the 29th county in the state to permit cameras in courtrooms.

During the hearing involving McIlvaine, Bressner was allowed to take a position in the back corner of the courtroom, using equipment wrapped around her digital camera to muffle the sound of the shutter click. The Illi-

nois Supreme Court cleared the way for the moment after approving policies in May that allowed the use of cameras – including video cameras – in the 16th Judicial Circuit.

ELBURN – After months of discussion, Elburn Village Board members in March approved a project that will help shape the future of the village.

Elburn Station, a ShoDeen development, is slated to bring 2,215 new homes to the village over a 20-year period, in the area near the Elburn Metra station.

The green light for the project also removed an obstacle for the extension of Anderson Road, which will lead to the creation of a bridge to provide a crossing of the train tracks that divide the village.

Some officials feared that millions of dollars in federal, state and local funding could

have been put in jeopardy if the debate were to have gone on through the summer.

The groundbreaking for the Anderson Road project has taken place. No development will take place in Elburn Station until the road extension and bridge work are completed.

Trustees debated the plan, with board member Bill Grabarek leading the charge to hammer out items and raise questions to go over every detail possible.

There are restrictions – the number of multifamily units will be restricted to 600, and, of that total, 200 must be designated as senior housing.

Hobby Lobby employee loses battle with cancer

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Hobby Lobby employee Sue Jacobsen has lost her battle with cancer.

Jacobsen died Monday after being diagnosed in August with Stage 4 ovarian cancer. She was 42 when she died.

“Though we will all miss her terribly, we are thankful for the time we had with her,” said Hobby Lobby co-worker Patty Smith.

Jacobsen had worked at the Batavia Hobby Lobby store for 11 years and was on leave from her job because of the cancer. Smith in October had her head shaved in support of Jacobsen, who had been losing her hair because of the chemotherapy she had been receiving to treat the cancer.

Smith and other Hobby Lobby employees also had organized a benefit for Jacobsen to help with her medical bills.

“It amazes me what everybody has been doing,” Jacobsen said at the time. “I have good co-workers.”

VIRTUAL SCHOOLS REJECTED IN AREA

Two of Kane County’s newest elected officials made headlines this year over budget battles.

Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen balked at Coroner Rob Russell’s initial budget request in August, which called for more than $900,000. That represented about a 24 percent increase from last year’s allocation of $757,000.

Two months later, Russell asked for more money – about $88,000 – to pay for the work his office already had conducted in 2013, including death investigations, autopsies and toxicology

The word “virtual” means “very close to being something without actually being it.” In other words, “not really.”

This year, Virtual Learning Solutions applied to open an online-only charter school in the Fox Valley that would have spanned 18 districts. All 18 rejected the application – among them were Geneva School District 304, Batavia School District 101, St. Charles School District 303 and Kaneland

School District 302.

School officials were concerned because charter schools receive state and federal money and siphon local tax dollars to support their education program.

They also were concerned that the applicant was not providing answers to questions and concerns.

State lawmakers then put a hold on the creation of virtual schools until they could craft real regulations and guidelines to govern them.

Lauzen – who campaigned last year with the goal of freezing the property tax levy – wanted justification for the requests.

Ultimately, Russell agreed to keep his budget at $843,000 for the next three years, barring forces outside his control.

This gives the coroner about $86,000 more to work with than was previously allocated for his office.

Soon before the Kane County Board was set to act on Russell’s $88,000 supplemental budget request, a morgue freezer broke and required a $3,500 fix.

The board approved the additional funds for 2013, but only after Lauzen criticized Russell for the freezer mishap, asserting the coroner had a year to inventory equipment and perform maintenance.

Going forward, Lauzen suggested several proposals for the coroner’s office, including reevaluating the cost of autopsies, reviewing autopsies and defining the coroner’s investigation role with law enforcement.

Russell has said he intends to use 2014 to educate people about the coroner’s office.

Let’s plan for bicentennial Earlier this month, Illinois observed its 195th birthday. It was officially admitted to the union Dec. 3, 1818.

How will Illinois celebrate the big 2-0-0?

It’s certainly time to start thinking about it.

We encourage state government, historical groups and county governments to consider ideas and pursue plans now to ensure a successful Illinois Bicentennial in 2018.

In 1968, the 24-member Illinois Sesquicentennial Commission, established by the Illinois General Assembly, rode herd on the state’s various observances of its 150th birthday.

An official logo was created, as was a sesquicentennial flag. A commemorative medallion was designed, struck and sold, with profits designated toward paying for sesquicentennial expenses.

Books and pamphlets about the state’s history were written. Counties were encouraged to write and publish their own histories, and many did.

Various special events were planned in honor of Illinois’ 150 years as a state.

Since 1968, Ronald Reagan, who was born in Tampico, and Barack Obama, a Chicagoan, were elected president.

The state’s industrial and agricultural economies have changed dramatically.

Chicago has exerted greater economic and political influence, even

as population has shifted to the suburbs. Rural growth has stalled. State government’s finances, unfortunately, are anything but strong.

With former Governors Otto Kerner (1961 through ’68), Dan Walker (1977 to ’81), George Ryan (1999 to 2003), and Rod Blagojevich (2003 through ’09) sentenced to prison for various misdeeds, Illinois is saddled with a legacy of political corruption that will take years to live down.

But if we can learn from our history, perhaps we won’t be doomed to repeat it. And, perhaps, the state’s 200th birthday could be the impetus to create a statewide blueprint for growth.

Gov. Frank Lowden was in office when Illinois observed its centennial in 1918.

The governor whom Illinoisans elect next year will be in office during bicentennial year.

The powers that be should not drag their feet on bicentennial planning.

We encourage them to come up with a dependable funding formula. We recall that in 2009, Illinois’ celebration of the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial was partially muted because of budget cuts by Gov. Blagojevich.

We encourage area and county officials to start thinking about their roles.

Done well, a bicentennial celebration could be a welcome shot in the arm as Illinois enters its third century.

Changes needed to keep Highway Trust Fund working THE WASHINGTON POST A major federal program is on desperate financial footing.

It’s too important and popular to cut drastically. But a combination of changing social patterns, technological innovation and bad policy design has thrown its accounts far out of balance, and it has begun to eat into general spending that should go to other national priorities.

The program is the federal Highway Trust Fund, which pays about half the yearly tab to build and maintain the nation’s roads, bridges and rails. At the moment, the loudest advocate for fixing it responsibly is a liberal Democrat, Rep. Earl Blumenauer of Oregon.

This month, Blumenauer proposed two bills meant to refill the fund based on the simple, unassailable principle that those who use the roads should pay for them. The measures are backed by a broad coalition of

business and labor groups, and they are sensible.

Traditionally, Congress filled the fund with revenue from the federal gasoline tax. Because the amount of gasoline used generally corresponded with wear and tear of the roads, lawmakers saw a natural fit, and Republicans and Democrats repeatedly raised the tax as needs arose.

Until 1993, that is – the last time Congress raised the 18.4 centper-gallon tax.

Since then, inflation has cut away about a third of the value of the revenue that the gas tax generates. Americans also are driving more fuel-efficient cars.

The combination of congressional inaction and changing consumer habits has depleted the fund, which will be broke in a couple of years.

Lawmakers will have to address that problem when they reauthorize transportation policy next year.

One of Blumenauer’s bills

would raise the tax by a modest 15 cents over the next three years, and then index it to inflation, which Congress should have done in the first place. That would raise about $170 billion over a decade, he reckons.

Still, in the era of the hybrid vehicle, a gas tax will become decreasingly useful. It remains the best existing template to shore up the trust fund. But some frequent drivers don’t buy much gas. So, Blumenauer’s second bill would cautiously promote a better but more controversial way to pay for transportation infrastructure – taxes on the number of miles people drive.

A spokesman for the House Transportation Committee told us that lawmakers “will look at all options for addressing our surface transportation infrastructure” in the coming months. Blumenauer has provided two that should top their list.

As for the school, yes the kids need education. But they don’t need band. Let the parents pay for that. There are other things.

Computer rooms? I bet they have that in their house. School board, wake up. I think the school board should be average people, not someone with a doctorate degree or a master’s degree.

They make so much money. If taxes go up, they just write out a check. St. Charles, start thinking of the everyday people who live here. When the prices go up here, and they will, a lot of us are going to be selling.

but what will it be next year? This is for the mentally disabled, and while the people who are pushing for this referendum might want to make those of us who would oppose this referendum look like Scrooge, I would contend that charity is supposed to be voluntary, not mandatory. Charity should not be taxed. We should not have to pay taxes for the charity. I would like to have some investigation into whether AID is tax-exempt. And why is it that we need to have our tax dollars going to those people instead of letting us contribute like we do with The Salvation Army or others. We’re being taxed out of our homes. It’s time to stop with all this taxation.

It might be a noble cause, but there are a lot of people who are starving and don’t have enough for prescriptions, let alone paying an additional amount of money to help those who are developmentally disabled. People should have been providing for their developmentally disabled children through special insurance policies or annuities or other types of things, not depending on the taxpayers.

Wonderful at Mr. Marco Don’t take it out on developmentally disabled If you are worried about being taxed out of your home, don’t take it out on the developmentally disabled. Look elsewhere.

Charity should not be mandatory I guess the push is on to give the people in Kane County another tax. This year, it’s supposed to be $100 on a $300,000 home,

Government spends and spends I’m responding to “Very angry about taxes.” The government spends and spends. The public schools do the same thing. I’m a baby boomer. I never had texting.

I didn’t have any of that stuff, but all of us have lost our jobs.

We have health insurance of our own that we are paying. We don’t buy Christmas gifts. We don’t celebrate birthdays like we used to. If we all have to pay for the real estate taxes for the schools, then the parents who have children in the schools should pay more. We never had kids in school, but we are paying for that. The teachers are overpaid.

They’re off three months of the year, plus Christmas and all the other vacations that they have.

They are union, and they get good pay. If they don’t like their jobs, they should work at Walmart. I believe they are hiring. I’m tiring of spending and spending because the average person has to cut back. Parents who have kids should do their share. The kids are there to learn, not to learn how to do a text.

Not parked in handicap spot I just read my Sound Off in the paper, and I left out something important. It was about pulling into a handicap spot temporarily at a fast-food restaurant to let my mother out with her walker.

Then I said my husband parks the car … it should have been he parks the car in a regular parking spot. He doesn’t park in a handicap spot. He moves to a regular spot, once she has been let out.

Examine their heart In response to “How do you know,” how do we not know? A lot of people who are not handicapped are using the placards.

They can walk. They have no heart problems. They have no leg problems. A lot of them need exercise, but yet they park in the handicap parking spot, or they

let somebody else use them.

That’s what we want to prevent.

People who need them, should have them. But people who don’t need them and are able to walk and get along without using somebody else’s placard, that’s what we need to crack down on.

How do we do that? Maybe they need to examine people’s hearts, that they’re taking somebody else’s spot.

Who is this bike rider?

I drive to work south on Kirk Road in St. Charles. I drive to work most weekdays at 6 a.m.

I’ve often observed a man riding his bike. He rides all year, snow or rain, below zero or not. He dresses in work clothes. He passes very affluent neighborhoods.

Can we reach out to help him?

Does anyone know who he is?

A tragedy waiting to happen Not just teenagers, but all ages should be focused at all times on their driving. But haven’t we all been distracted at one time or another? That is exactly why we don’t need obstacles of distraction on our city streets, such as bumpouts. I wouldn’t call that no big deal. I’d call it a senseless tragedy waiting to happen. It could cause your car to swerve into oncoming traffic or hit a walking pedestrian. I would call that a tragedy. I’m still waiting to hear why there are bumpouts in downtown Batavia.

Don’t discount us On Friday the 13th, I went to Jewel to buy my weekly groceries. I’m handicapped, so I use an electric cart. On this day, I had to wait more than 45 minutes for one to be available. One was stolen, and only two were available. With all the handicap parking Jewel has, are two carts really enough, or even three? My next stop was Walmart. They had a cart, but that cart died at the checkout. On Wednesday evening at Batavia High School, I used my wheelchair to enter the school. Why are the handicap doors never operational? Please don’t discount us. Just because we are handicapped doesn’t mean we don’t have money to spend.

When you think about it, and you know the Secret Service is involved in investigating this Target business, you have to ask yourself, is the NSA hacking into these systems so that now they can keep track of all the purchases made by the citizens of the United States? Is that another part of the NSA spying tactic? Thank you so much, Mr. Snowden, for exposing these people. Thank you so much for proving that our government is the nastiest government on the face of the Earth when it comes to taking away our right to privacy and our national rights. We, the people of the United States, who are supposed to be free, should not trust the government in any way, shape or form.

FLOODING HIT KANE IN APRIL Kane County was hard hit by flooding in April.

Island Park in Geneva was left underwater after the flooding, and heavy rains filled Quarry Beach in Batavia to within a foot of its capacity. Hall Quarry Beach occupies a former stone quarry and features a sand bottom swimming area.

In addition, flooding caused North Aurora Village Hall, which is located along the Fox River, to close.

One of the hardest hit areas was the Valley View area of St. Charles Township, where resident Antonio Gualtieri lives. He estimated 6 inches of water entered his house as heavy rains fell April 18, representing the worst flooding Gualtieri had seen since he had lived there for the past six or seven years.

“The water’s been up before, but it never got into the house,” he had said. “It never got this bad.”

Those living near the river face the risk of such flooding during heavy rain. And the area took a hard hit in

April, with some suffering damage to their property.

Despite that, some residents say they still enjoy the benefits of living near the river, and that they can live

with the downside. Gualtieri doesn’t plan to move. He loves the area too much.

“The sunsets are unbelievable,” he said. “Nobody bothers you out here. It is

real quiet.”

One of his neighbors, Gina Settipani, also has memories of flooding in the neighborhood. But she wouldn’t trade the quiet

beauty her neighborhood provides.

“It’s pretty peaceful out here for the most part,” Settipani had said.

JUDGE RULES ON RICHMOND-DAVIS LAWSUIT ST. CHARLES – A judge ruled on a case this year that had been brought in 2011 by a group of 17 parents of Davis Elementary students against St. Charles School District 303.

The parents alleged that District 303 had acted contrary to the Illinois School Code when it converted Davis to a school for students in

kindergarten to second grade, and Richmond into a campus for students in the third to fifth grades.

The parents argued that under No Child Left Behind, the district should have created a school improvement plan specifically to bolster academic performance of the students at Richmond – which included a significant

number of Hispanic students – rather than simply merge the student populations of the two schools.

In September, Kane County Circuit Judge David R. Akemann refused to undo the decision by District 303 to effectively merge Richmond and Davis elementary schools. He rejected a request from parents of students who

formerly attended St. Charles’ Davis Elementary School to step in and redraw attendance zone boundaries within District 303.

Akemann did reiterate his findings that District 303 had skirted the requirements of the federal No Child Left Behind Act in combining the two schools.

In October, the parents who

sued the school district over the reconfiguration of the two elementary schools filed a class-action suit against the school system.

The parents are bringing the action on behalf of themselves and the families affected by the district’s decision in 2011 to restructure Richmond and Davis elementary schools.

ST. CHARLES – After years of empty promises from one set of owners, Charlestowne Mall this year was sold to another company that has unveiled plans to revitalize the shopping center with a new name and a new look.

Representatives from The Krausz Companies Inc. shared their vision for the St. Charles mall in September, two months before the California-based company purchased the property at Kirk Road and Main Street for more than $9.5 million.

“Have you seen me?” Kane County birders and non-birders alike are on the lookout for snowy owls, a northern species in the midst of a massive southward migration. birds is called an irruption.

These ups and downs, in the past, have followed a general pattern repeating about every four years. The last major snowy owl irruption in our area was in the winter of 201112, so, technically, we wouldn’t be “due” for a visit for another couple of years.

However, as every naturalist knows, animals – even wise old owls – never pay attention to scientific literature. But for those of us who do, reports from the field are indicating that the eastern half of the United States is in the midst of a massive, possibly record-breaking, irruption.

I first found out something was up with B. scandiacus in early December, when a Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources news release reported a large number of snowies in the northern half of the state. It was only a matter of time before the birds dispersed

Not only do I remember where I saw my first white owl, I also remember when. I was 4 years old, poking around my grandmother’s basement, when I spotted it – a serious-looking bird, staring out at me from the label on the inside lid of a cigar box.

I was more than a little surprised to see it there, since all the other boxes on the workbench were Dutch Masters and Muriel—brands I felt I knew.

(Let’s just say, even at that tender age, I’d had more than a few puffs on my uncles’ cigars.

But that’s another story for another time.) Suffice it to say, that white owl really threw me for a loop.

Little did I know that, a scant 47 years later, I’d again be loopy over a white owl. But this one’s not on a box. It’s Bubo scandiacus, the snowy owl.

Besides cigar boxes, snowy owls were popularized by the Harry Potter franchise.

A bird whose summer – or breeding – territory stretches north of the Arctic Circle, snowies are occasional winter visitors to the United States.

Up north, their populations fluctuate with the availability of prey, which consists mainly of lemmings and ptarmigans but also includes other small mammals, ducks, geese and the occasional seabird.

When prey is plentiful, snowy owl numbers go up.

When prey animals diminish, either through pressure from predators or due to severe weather, snowies need to disperse. A movement, or migration, of great numbers of

Look out for snowy owls • OWLS Continued from page 19 farther south and showed up here in Illinois.

On Dec. 14, when a group of Kane County Audubon members stopped by Hickory Knolls during their Christmas Bird Count rounds, the conversation quickly turned to snowies. Besides talk of recent sightings – including a snowy at the Jewel on the east side of St. Charles – Chris Madsen and I reminisced about how White Sox announcer Bob Elson would call a home run a white owl wallop.

How cool would it be to feel the wallop of seeing a bona fide, snowy-white owl in Kane County?

Now, two weeks later, dozens of snowy owl sightings have been reported in Illinois, with the majority showing up in areas that offer habitat similar to the birds’ northern homeland – coastal areas, as well as flat or rolling tundra-like expanses.

The Lake Michigan shoreline, particularly near Montrose Harbor, is a popular place to spot a snowy. And with the spate of cold weather we endured, and are expecting more of, the list of “tundra-like expanses” is lengthy and expected to grow – cornfields; airport landing fields; actually open fields of just about any type, provided prey animals are present.

Other than the Jewel sighting in early December, and another one at the Walmart in Huntley, reports of snowies in Kane County have been

concentrated in the southern sectors, near Sugar Grove and the Aurora airport.

If you’d like to see a snowy of your own, go for it! But please be respectful of these birds, many of which are stressed and hungry. If luck is with you and you spot one, don’t make any sudden moves or loud noises. Take a picture if you’d like, but use your biggest telephoto lens or maximum zoom so you can keep your distance. Junior guard Jake Ludwig scored 21 points; together Goetz and Ludwig scored 28 of North’s 30 first-half points as the North Stars led, 30-27, at the break.

Striking praise came from veteran Simeon coach Robert Smith.

“I haven’t played everybody yet [this year] but I probably haven’t seen two guards that good yet,” Smith said.

North’s bench could hardly con-

tain its enthusiasm as the North Stars led most of the game. Players stood and cheered with incredulous body language, and their joy soon spread to the crowd, which showered the upset-hunting North Stars with healthy ovations.

Turns out, though, the nationally regarded Wolverines don’t mind playing the villain.

With the gymnasium at rapt attention, Simeon inbounded the ball after a timeout with 7.5 seconds left in regulation and North leading, 5855.

Poulin said he considered instructing his team to foul to prevent a 3-point attempt but he feared the Wolverines’ elite athleticism could lead to an offensive rebound and putback. Plus, the Wolverines had not made a 3-pointer all game.

That changed when Simeon (81) urgently needed one, as Wolverines forward Jaycee Hillsman was mistakenly left open by a collapsing defender in the corner, and he pocketed the tying 3-pointer before time expired.

As demoralizing as the buzzer-beating 3 was, North did not succumb to the momentum swing.

Ludwig split a pair of free throws – as he did at the end of regulation before Hillsman’s huge 3 – tying the score at 64 with 1:29 left in the first overtime. Both teams had prime scoring chances in the final minute that yielded nothing, prompting double OT. The Wolverines led, 69-66, in the second overtime until Goetz buried a corner 3-pointer, falling to the ground upon his release, to tie the score with 1:12 remaining.

Goetz then answered a dunk by Simeon forward Edward Morrow (team-highs of 31 points and 14 rebounds) with a pair of free throws to make it 71-all with 26 seconds left, and it stayed that way until the third overtime.

The Wolverines finally wrestled control in triple overtime, although Goetz’s final 3-pointer of the game – another deep one – brought North within 77-74 at the 2:01 mark. That would be the final basket for North, which bravely navigated the Wolverines’ vaunted defense for most of the game.

PONTIAC – What arguably would have been the greatest win in school history slipped from the St. Charles North boys basketball team’s grasp, so the North Stars settled for one of the program’s finest performances.

A tinge of melancholy mingled with the enormous pride the North Stars felt Friday after taking fourtime defending IHSA Class 4A state champion Simeon to triple overtime at the Pontiac Holiday Tournament, falling to the Wolverines, 82-74.

Simeon needed a tying 3-pointer in the final seconds of regAlec Goetz ulation to send the game to overtime.

“It’s wild to say we feel like we let one slip away against Simeon, but we feel like we did,” North Stars coach Tom Poulin said. “But I haven’t been more proud of any team I’ve ever coached in my life.”

Simeon’s roster is perennially chock-full of future Division I talent, but nobody mesmerized the Pontiac faithful like North senior Alec Goetz.

The 160-pound combo guard stood up to Simeon’s invasive ball pressure and swarm of long-armed defenders to score a game-high 36 points and set a holiday tournament record with eight 3-pointers in the game.

“I know Alec is probably one of the best scorers in our conference, one of the best scorers in the state, but I think just how tough he was [was most impressive],” North junior Jack Callaghan said. “I mean, he was getting hammered but he kept going to the lane. He wasn’t missing anything. I think he’s even more of a competitor than I thought he was.”

Goetz went 8 for 11 from the 3-point line, several of them hoisted well beyond the arc. As Goetz continued rippling the nets, North’s belief that it could pull the whopping upset mounted.

The Bulldogs football team won the first state championship in program history, ripping Richards, 34-14, on Nov. 30 at Huskie Stadium in DeKalb for the IHSA Class 6A state championship team.

Richards had defeated Batavia early in the regular season. That ended up being the only loss of the season for Batavia, which finished with a 13-1 record.

2. COUGARS COMPLETE 1ST SEASON AS CUBS AFFILIATE The Kane County Cougars enjoyed a successful debut year with the Cubs in many ways.

On-the-field success was not one of them.

Inviting plenty of punch lines from Cubs-bashers, the Cougars’ first season as a Cubs affiliate turned out to be their worst in franchise history from a wins and losses standpoint

(55-80).

The Cougars, however, drew more than 15,000 additional fans to Fifth Third Bank Ballpark compared to 2012 despite having four fewer home dates, and showcased some of the Cubs’ top young prospects, including center fielder Albert Almora, pitcher Pierce Johnson and first baseman Dan Vogelbach.

Don Beebe’s wildly successful 10-year run as coach of the Aurora Christian football program came to a close.

Beebe, who plans to stay on as an assistant to his younger brother, Dave Beebe, stepped down earlier this month after compiling a 97-26 record in 10 years as head coach, including a pair of Class 3A state championships.

Beebe’s final Eagles team battled a rash of key injuries and still managed to qualify for the 3A playoffs, dropping a heartbreaker to Stillman Valley in the semifinals.

4. EVEN MORE CONFERENCE TURBULENCE Area high school sports fans might have an increasingly difficult time staying up to date with the local conference landscape. That holds especially true around the Upstate Eight Conference, which houses all four Tri-Cities schools.

The Indian Prairie schools – Metea Valley, Neuqua Valley

and Waubonsie Valley – announced they will leave the Upstate Eight Conference effective 2015-16, one year after West Aurora and Glenbard East arrive in the UEC. West Chicago made its debut in the UEC this school year.

Elsewhere, the Suburban Christian Conference unraveled

as a large faction of the conference – including Aurora Central Catholic and Wheaton Academy – opted to join the Metro Suburban Conference next school year, leaving remaining schools such as Marmion, St. Francis and Aurora Christian to join the Chicago Catholic League for some sports, including football.

6. JEFF KELLY WINS FOX VALLEY MARATHON After 20 years of running marathons, Jeff Kelly finally broke through.

The 39-year-old was triumphant at the fourth annual Fox Valley Marathon, winning the St. Charles event Sept. 22 in a time of 2:40.01 for his first career win.

“It’s very exciting to me. It

means a lot to get a win because I don’t know how much longer I’ll be able to run hard,” the Urbana man said after the race. “I’m almost 40, so this is a huge thing for me.”

The women’s marathon was won by Wisconsin resident Lindsey Kong in 3:01.23.

7. STATE WRESTLING TITLES A trio of area wrestlers won state championships at Assembly Hall in Champaign.

Kaneland’s Dan Goress and Marmion’s Johnny Jimenez and George Fisher – both of St. Charles – clawed to the very top of their respective weight classes, winning state wrestling titles in February.

Jimenez capped his 48-2 season by winning the 3A title at 120 pounds, Fisher prevailed at 132 pounds in Class 3A and Goress won at 145 pounds in Class 2A, becoming the first

Batavia surges past Geneva wins, Batavia falls Walther Christian

By JAKE POWERS jpowers@shawmedia.com ELGIN – Although Batavia boys basketball coach Jim Nazos did not like that the Bulldogs had to compete in the consolation bracket of the Elgin Boys Holiday Basketball Tournament, he thought his team’s win over Walther Christian was indicative of his players’ mental toughness.

Batavia defeated Walther Christian, 5637, on Friday in what Nazos saw as a gutcheck win for his team.

“We kind of wanted to be in the semi- Canaan Coffey finals, but I think that a mature team knows that you’re playing, no matter when you play, who you play, where Micah Coffey you play, you want to play well,” Nazos said. “Overall, I think it was a good team effort.”

Walther Chasen Peez Christian (28) jumped out to an early 9-2 lead at the beginning of the game. The Broncos employed a strong full-court press that limited Batavia’s ability to get anything going offensively.

Walther Christian guard Lee Hardrick scored five early points for the Broncos.

The Bulldogs (4-8) were able to figure out the press about halfway through the quarter, which allowed them to settle into their half-court offense and get the ball to the basket.

Batavia senior guard Micah Coffey cut through the Broncos defense and finished at the hoop on two separate possessions to bring the Bulldogs within three at the end

of the quarter, down 13-10.

Batavia sophomore guard Canaan Coffey drilled a 3-pointer at the beginning of the second quarter to launch the Bulldogs into a 14-3 run that put them up for good.

Micah Coffey also heated up from the perimeter during the surge.

“Obviously they have to be good shots, but if I’m open then I have the green light to pull,” Coffey said.

Batavia went on to outscore the Broncos, 18-9, in the second quarter and refused to let up from there. Forward Chasen Peez established his presence in the paint within Batavia’s offense, scoring nine points in the second half.

Walther Christian was hard-pressed to find an uncontested shot in the second half. The Broncos only managed 15 points in the final two periods.

“We don’t have to have steals to play good defense,” Nazos said. “I think we were a little bit more disciplined defensively.”

Micah Coffey lead all scorers with 19 points. Peez (11), Canaan Coffey (8) and Tucker Knox (8) rounded out the leading scorers for the Bulldogs.

Nazos established that his team should be able to build some momentum after the solid performance. The Bulldogs move on to play Rockford East at 5 p.m. today.

“I thought that there were a lot of things that we can take out of that game,” Nazos said. “Move on tomorrow, try to go 3-1 (in the tournament).”

Micah Coffey said it was a big mental lift for the Bulldogs coming off a loss Thursday night to Phillips.

“It feels good to come together as a team,” he said.

“Sometimes in the second half we didn’t get the shots we wanted. Gotta work on a couple things, rebounding-wise and stuff like that, but it’s good to come out and get a win.”

LOMBARD – Different players stepped up at different times for the Geneva girls basketball team Friday to help the Vikings claim a 58-45 victory over South Elgin in the Montini Christmas Tournament.

Early on, Geneva turned to 6-foot-2 freshman Grace Loberg, who has become a major force in the middle for the Vikings since being called up from the sophomore squad two weeks ago. She scored 12 of Geneva’s first 14 points in the first quarter as the Vikings (10-3) jumped out to a five-point lead, benefiting from interior passing by Sidney Santos and Abby Novak.

“We knew we had to attack and get in to the basket,” Loberg said. “Sidney passes the ball amazing every time, so it makes my job five times easier.”

Loberg finished with 19 points, seven rebounds and seven blocked shots. She had led the team in scoring in each of her five games on varsity.

“She’s so much stronger than I originally gave her credit for,” Geneva coach Sarah Meadows said. “There’s three kids on her and she’s still ripping that ball out and being able to finish.”

Junior guard Kate Rogers hit a 3-pointer late in the first quarter to put Geneva up, 21-12, but the Storm (8-6) closed the gap to 23-19 midway through the second quarter. That’s when Santos stepped up, converting an old-fashioned 3-point play on a baseline drive and hitting a pair of free throws to push the lead back to nine. She scored six of her 10 points in the second quarter as the Vikings took a 3425 lead into the half.

Loberg hit a short jumper in the paint to give Geneva a 44-27 lead in the third quarter, but South Elgin scored the next six points to cut the deficit to 11.

It was then Morgan Seberger’s turn to shine. The senior guard hit a 3 from the left wing at the end of the quarter, then was fouled on a drive to the bucket at the start of the fourth. She hit the ensuing free throw to restore the 17-point lead.

Those were the only six points Seberger scored, in part because she was the focus of the Storm’s defensive game plan.

“We were going to try and box-and-one Seberger and not let her get any shots off,” South Elgin coach Tim Prendergast said. “But they were doing a good job of getting the ball into the middle. Then we had to go man and there were a lot of mismatches out there.”

Geneva junior forward Janie McCloughan made her presence felt in the fourth quarter, scoring four points and grabbing three rebounds in a span of two minutes as the Vikings pushed the lead to 20. McCloughan finished with nine points and seven rebounds while Novak ended with 10 points and five boards.

It was a more convincing victory than the first time the two teams played this season, when the Storm took the Vikings to overtime before losing at South Elgin.

“We’ve gotten so much better in the half-court offense,” Meadows said. “We were throwing the ball all over the place the first time we played them. And we did a different defense. We tried to play them in man last time. We played a 1-2-2 [this time].”

The victory sends Geneva into today’s 1:15 p.m. consolation bracket championship against Zion-Benton.

In their predominantly yellow uniforms with dark navy numerals, the quicker Wildcats resembled buzzing bees, harassing the Bulldogs into 29 turnovers and drawing frequent fouls. Neuqua Valley (124) made 29 of 32 free throws (91 percent).

It was a tight, back-and-forth game early. Erin Bayram (15 points, 10 rebounds) scored on an offensive rebound to put the Bulldogs up early, 14-10. That was their largest lead of the game. Their last came on a putback by freshman Mackenzie Foster 1:50 before halftime.

The Wildcats led by three at the half and maintained a slim lead throughout the third quarter. Liza Fruendt (19 points) scored from beyond the arc with seven minutes to play to cut Batavia’s deficit to 55-51, but the Bulldogs (11-4) could get no closer.

Sophomore Hannah Frazier had another solid game for the Bulldogs in the low post, scoring 15 points and securing 12 rebounds. Jensen said Batavia did a good job much of the game reversing the ball and getting it inside for easy shots.

“Again, same thing as last night [against Trinity], there’s just not a lot of room for error,” he said. “I told the girls, I like where we’re at. I don’t want to give the same speech two nights in a row, but we’re playing really good teams.”

AURORA – As the Hubbard boys basketball team was reminded Friday against Geneva, it is important to pay attention to the details.

The Greyhounds were assessed a team technical in the first quarter when it was discovered that a player had an incorrect number listed in the official score book.

Geneva executed the basics well enough to soundly defeat Hubbard, 63-35, in the second round of pool play at the East Aurora Holiday Tournament.

But the Vikings will need to fine-tune their play today when they take on Neuqua Valley in the final round of pool play.

A victory over the Wildcats would put Geneva in the championship game Monday.

“There were a lot of bright spots today, but we just didn’t show some discipline at times.

We had a chance to blow the doors open on the game,” Geneva coach Phil Ralston said.

“When you jump out to a big lead, sometime it’s kind of hard to sustain that level of effort.”

“We just got to be a little bit better and crisper at what we are doing, especially when we play Neuqua tomorrow,” Ralston continued. “Those little things are the ones that separate the teams with good records from teams that can be great.”

row, Geneva (10-3) charged out to an early lead, scoring the first 11 points of the game.

Hubbard (2-8) didn’t score until a Luther Driver layup at the 4:27 mark. The Vikings led, 16-7, at the end of the first quarter.

“We just tried to use our athleticism [to counter Geneva’s height]. We used our speed and that helped us out a lot to try and keep the game close,” Hubbard coach Matt Flavin said. “This was one of our best games I think we played.”

The Vikings extended their lead to 34-17 at the half.

Geneva came out flat in the second half and was outscored by the Greyhounds, 9-7, in the third quarter.

“Yeah, we got sloppy at some points. We had about a five-minute run in the third quarter that was just like run and gun – no real offense or defense,” Geneva senior guard Justin Durante said. “We re-

Big second half helps Kaneland St. Charles East crushes Gage Park to bounce-back victory over G-K

By IAN MATTHEWS editorial@kcchronicle.com HILLSIDE – Business suits were the only thing the St. Charles East boys basketball team lacked during a 77-26 rout of Gage Park at the Proviso West Holiday Tournament on Friday morning.

The 8:30 a.m. weekday tipoff, an overmatched opponent and the results made the trip to Hillside a glorified business trip, as nearly the entire Saints squad pitched in to help East advance in the workman-like effort.

Starters Dom Adduci and Cole Gentry each played about a quarter and a half for the Saints but still managed 16 points apiece. Saints coach Pat Woods gave his bench plenty of minutes as 10 of East’s 12 players scored.

“We talked more about working on things and getting better so we tried to emphasize rebounding and feeding the post,” Woods said. “[The Saints’ bench players] work a lot in practice, so it’s good to get them an opportunity. They were missing their two best players, so that might have made a difference.”

With a 27-2 lead after the first quarter, Woods sat his starters the entire second quarter. The Saints’ bench responded with 6-foot-8 big man Jack Bronec and 3-point ace Jake Asquini leading the way. Bronec made

life difficult inside for an under-sized Gage Park team while Asquini hit a pair of 3s at the end of the first half to help East lead 45-12 at the break.

Adduci, Gentry and A.J. Washington scored the first 15 points of the third quarter to push East’s lead to 60-12 before Woods called off the dogs.

Bronec scored six of his 11 points in fourth quarter to aid in the rout.

Bronec’s development could loom large for East down the line. While injured 6-foot-7 big man David Mason is expected to return soon, Bronec’s size could become a factor for the Saints.

Depth is always important, too, and East showed it had it Friday as Jake Clodi knocked down a pair of 3-pointers while Jeremy Champine added one.

If East is ever in a pinch and needs to lean on a bench player, Friday’s game could be big for players’ confidence, like Clodi.

“It means a lot for my confidence. No matter the team you have to come out and play hard,” Clodi said. “This boosted my confidence to know that I can knock it down when my name gets called. It helps our team come together to know that you can trust your guys who are coming in.”

Washington led East with nine rebounds and also helped hold the Owls to 22 percent shooting from the floor.

editorial@kcchronicle.com PLANO – After dropping its first game of the Plano Christmas Classic, Kaneland looked to bounce back against Genoa-Kingston on Friday afternoon.

Trailing by three at halftime, the Knights jumped out to a 7-0 run to start the third quarter and never relinquished the lead in a 52-40 victory over the Cogs.

“I thought we came out flat in the first half but in the second half, I thought we picked it up,” Kaneland’s Tyler Carlson said. “Every game, we are trying to get out to fast starts and try and put ourselves in a good position to win the game.”

Carlson led the Knights (5-3) with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Eleven of Carlson’s 15 points came in the second half, with nine coming in the

fourth quarter.

Kaneland coach Brian Johnson was pleased with how his team came out Friday after its loss to Newark on Thursday.

“I am really happy with how we responded after yesterday,” Johnson said. “[Thursday] was a tough loss for us so we wanted to do some big things here but we needed to come back and play strong, and the boys responded really well.”

G-K (8-3) struggled offensively after halftime, going 4 for 22 from the field, with its first field goal not coming until 1:25 left in the third quarter. The Cogs also turned the ball over nine times in the second half.

“We are not valuing the possession at all right now, so we are struggling offensively,” G-K coach Corey Jenkins said. “The last two games here, it has just been turnover

city. We are just not valuing the possession. We were getting good looks early in the season and right now, we are not getting good looks. Your percentage isn’t going to be high with the quality of shots that we are getting.”

Kaneland dominated the glass, outrebounding the Cogs, 40-22. Johnson said it was a team effort on defense.

“We contested shots and we wanted to make sure that we got a hand in the shooter’s face,” Carlson said.

John Pruett also finished with a double-double for the Knights with 12 points and 13 rebounds.

Drew David was also in double figures with 12 points, including three 3-pointers.

Kaneland will play Mendota at 2 p.m. today.

For G-K, Tommy Lucca led the way with 13 points. Griffin McNeal chipped in with 10 points and seven rebounds.

They were long. They’ve got long guys, fast guys. I think we matched up pretty well with them. Obviously, their center was pretty long and tall and could jump.

I know you didn’t log as

many minutes as some of these guys, but how crazy is it to think you guys still have another basketball game to play tonight?

Yeah, I’ve got to say, I feel bad for some of the guys, like Alec Goetz, our point guard.

He’s got to be tired. But I know him, he’ll bounce right back.

Can you tell me a little bit about this (football) all-star game you were selected for.

How excited are you about that?

I’m excited. It’s next week.

I leave on Monday to go to it. It’s the Offense-Defense All-American Game, so it should be really fun. I’m playing with Gerald Owens who’s also going to Michigan State, he’s committed as a running back, so that should be really fun, just to hang out with him and get to know him a little better. He lives in New Jersey so obviously I haven’t met him that much. I met

him one time. And just to be able to go out there and play against guys who are playing Division I football like I am, it should be great experience for me to see that.

How tricky is it to alternate between basketball and football right in the heart of basketball season?

A little bit, but all my coaches that I train with say football, playing offensive line, is like being a boxer and being a basketball player at the same time. You’ve got to use your hands but you’ve got to move your feet.

I love basketball because it helps me with my footwork and makes me a lot faster.

So I don’t think it’ll be too difficult, just knocking off a little bit of rust. We have two-a-days next week. It’s in Orlando, so they fly me down, and we’ll knock the rust off then.

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE DeKALB – The third-place game at the Chuck Dayton Holiday Tournament on Friday night featured a rematch between the Marmion and West Chicago boys basketball teams.

Earlier in the season, the teams met at the West Chicago Thanksgiving tournament with the Wildcats winning, 80-68.

On Friday night, history repeated itself as the Wildcats once again wound up victorious, 92-73, despite 23 points from Marmion junior guard Jordan Glasgow.

With the exception of a 19-18 lead in the first quarter, Marmion trailed the entire game, including a 19-point deficit at halftime.

The play of Glasgow (who scored 20 of his points in the second half) kept the Cadets within striking distance, trimming West Chicago’s lead to 12 several times in the fourth quarter.

However, each time it appeared Marmion was fighting its way back into the game, West Chicago was able to respond with a basket of its own on the other end.

A main reason West Chicago was able to withstand Glasgow’s barrage was the play of senior John Konchar. Konchar, who scored a school-record 49 points last week against South Elgin, was able to shake off a slow start to the game, with only two points in the first

quarter, to finish with 30 to lead all scorers.

“Early in the game, we wanted to force the ball out of his hands and we did, but to his credit he was able to effectively involve his teammates,” Marmion coach Ryan Paradise said.

“He is a fantastic passer and he was finding the open guy for layups, so even though he wasn’t scoring, they still were.”

Mike Bibbs added 29 points for West Chicago.

The loss drops Marmion to 4-8 while West Chicago improved to 9-6.

Plano tournament: Aurora Christian downed Newark, 62-53, to earn a spot in a semifinal tonight against top-seeded Ottawa. R.D. Lutze scored 25 points and had nine rebounds and Zach Singer added 16 points for the Eagles.

In other Plano action, Burlington Central topped Yorkville, 75-64, to advance to the other semifinal against Morris.

Proviso West tournament: Wheaton Academy dropped a consolation matchup against Urban Prep West, 59-50. Wheaton Academy (8-4) was led by 20 points and 14 rebounds from Gordon Behr and 12 points by Josh Ruggles. Urban Prep led by as many as 22 points.

East Aurora tournament: Aurora Central Catholic dropped a poolplay matchup against Prosser, 7971, despite Sean Harreld’s 25 points.

Andy Czerak added 18 points for ACC.

GIRLS BASKETBALL Wheaton North tournament: St. Charles East edged Schaumburg, 51-49, as the Saints regrouped down the stretch after squandering a 34-18 halftime lead.

Amanda Hilton (16 points) and Kyra Washington and Katelyn Claussner (14 points each) paved the way to victory for East (7-7), which will face Willowbrook in today’s consolation final.

Dundee-Crown tournament: Burlington Central and St. Charles North were both winners in consolation play, earning a meeting with one another today.

Central (10-1) topped host Dundee-Crown, 56-44, behind 14 points apiece from Samantha Pryor and Alison Colby.

St. Charles North got 25 points from Nichole Davidson as the North Stars (7-8) upended Resurrection, 56-41.

Dixon tournament: Kaneland blew past Freeport Aquin, 45-28, as Camri Conley, Kelly Wallner and Amber Winquist Bailey each scored nine points for the Knights (7-7).

Elsewhere in play at Dixon, Aurora Christian handled Rochelle, 52-39, as Alyssa Andersen reached the 1,000 point mark for her Eagles career. Aurora Christian and Kaneland will meet today in a consolation semifinal.

against a team like Simeon that’s won [four] straight state championships. It was just a great experience for me to be in that kind of environment. The guys played their hearts out today. We all did.

It was a great game to be a part of. It was a great game to look back on and say I played in a game like that.

St. Charles North reserve center Chase Gianacakos is lending his bulk to the North Stars boys basketball team after spending the fall as a standout offensive tackle in football. Gianacakos, a Michigan State football recruit, was selected to the Offense-Defense All-American Bowl football showcase Friday at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando. Offensively, it’s tough, and then you’ve got to box out, because if you’re in front of them, it’s not enough because they’re going to go vertical [to get the rebound]. It’s extra work. You’ve got to work a lot harder to get rebounds, points, assists. It takes a toll on your body, but if you’re mentally tough, you can get through it.”

Callaghan led North with 13 rebounds but the North Stars were outrebounded by Simeon by a whopping 30 caroms (63-33).

Simeon’s rebounding prowess, though, was counteracted by woeful shooting from the 3-point line (1 of 14) and foul line (25 for 44 and 7 for 15 in the first half).

After the severe physical and emotional toll exacted by the three-overtime rumble, North had about eight hours to regroup before a consolation showdown with Bloom that didn’t tip until after 9 p.m. Bloom edged North, 59-58, as Callaghan (17 points), Goetz (16) and Ludwig (14) paced the North Stars in their tournament swan song.

“Three [overtimes] against Simeon, and then you get either Bloom or Oak Park-River Forest,” Poulin said before

A showing like North gave Friday is all the more remarkable considering the North Stars returned only one starter this season and were largely considered an afterthought in the Upstate Eight Conference River.

Plus, one of the North’s top athletes, starting forward Erik Miller, is sidelined with a shoulder injury.

“I learned an awful lot about what type of people I have wearing our uniform and representing our school,” Poulin said.

The gift of gab: Mom swaps cards for calls I’m always grateful to be remembered by those who send greeting cards at holiday time, but I never got around to sending them out myself this year.

Again. I knew that once I got started I’d end up writing volumes, my hand would cramp up and by the time I reached the letter “K” in my address book I’d resent the chore altogether.

No fun. Who wants a card written under duress? Not me, thank you. But not writing them meant I wasn’t reaching out at all to the people I miss who live far away, and that didn’t fly with me.

So, this year I’m making phone calls, instead.

Among others I called a dear friend whose voice I haven’t

Instead of merely wishing happy holidays – and maybe reporting a few highlights of my family’s year (yadda, yadda, yadda), I got to enjoy actual conversations.

I received immediate feedback and instant answers to my questions about how my loved ones were doing. You’d think I discovered the telephone, as

excited as I was to be making these connections. So liberating!

As valuable and useful as texting and Facebook really can be, I hadn’t realized how dependent I’d become on these methods of communication for keeping in touch – or how they’d begun to substitute for live conversation, where so much more can be communicated and learned.

I really appreciate that telephones allow us to hear an inflection here or pick up on a tone of voice there and to follow up to learn more about whatever concern may have inspired them. And because most of us are fortunate enough to have flat-rate local and long-distance calling plans, picking up the phone to make those extra calls

costs us nothing more. Nothing but our time.

I haven’t gotten very far with my calls yet, but that’s OK. There’s no statute of limitations on reaching out to connect with those who matter to us. That’s not to say that there isn’t a lot to be gained from connecting via texting and Facebook, but it seems that so much more can be gleaned from a phone call.

For example, when I spoke to my aunt, she relayed news of several losses she suffered this year, including the death of her dear brother-in-law.

When I asked if he’d been in a lot of pain, she volunteered that in spite of it he’d apparently refused heavy medication as his death grew more imminent.

Why, I asked? “[I] don’t want to miss this,” he’d apparently said, as he lay dying.

His approach to death isn’t for everyone, but I’m so glad he got his wish. Because he missed nothing.

“Beautiful. It’s so beautiful,” he’d whispered, as he slipped away.

I doubt the sending and receiving of cards alone would have yielded such a lovely message.

I’m so glad I didn’t miss it.

Albright Theatre hosting auditions for drama ‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?’

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – The Albright Theatre in Batavia will host auditions for an upcoming production of “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” by Edward Albee.

Auditions will take place at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 5 and 6 at the theater, located on the third floor of the Batavia government building, 100 N. Island Ave., Batavia.

Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script. Callbacks are optional and may take place at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7 (by invitation only).

Casting will include two men (20s to late-50s) and two women (20s to early-60s).

The character descriptions are:

• Martha – A boisterous, vicious-tongued, domineering woman who is angry, frustrated and unfulfilled. She is at once a vixen and a shrew (for actors in their 40s to early 60s).

• George – Martha’s husband, slightly younger than her, a middle-aged history professor whose life and career have been full of disappointments. It’s because of his sharp wit and intelligence that he can ward off Martha’s attacks (for actors in their 30s to late 50s).

• Honey – The submissive, doll-like wife of Nick. Her naïve child-like talk induces other characters to recount their stories, yet she remains unaffected by the verbal dueling (for actors in their 20s to early 30s).

• Nick – A competitive and ambitious new professor of

biology. Although he seems to be well intentioned, he is also ruthlessly deceptive (for actors in their late 20s and 30s).

Audubon group to host new-year bird walks Participants can start 2014 bird-sighting lists during two January events

By NATALIE WICKMAN editorial@kcchronicle.com Bird watchers will begin compiling their 2014 bird-sighting lists during the Kane County Audubon’s three-mile bird walks on Jan. 1 – New Year’s Day – and Jan. 4.

The two walks start at 8 a.m. and will take place at Dick Young Forest Preserve, 39W115 Main St., Batavia.

Participants should meet in the parking lot by the silo on Nelson Lake Road and are strongly advised to bring

binoculars, food and water, in addition to dressing in layers.

Attendees of any age or skill level will be admitted to the walks, though the Audubon group advises parents to consider the cold weather and quiet forest environment when determining whether to bring their young children.

“Our group is really good at helping newcomers see things and explaining to them why a particular bird is what it is,” said Rhonda Nelson, a Batavia resident and leader of the traditional New

Year’s Day bird walk.

Terry Murray, an Aurora resident and the leader of the Jan. 4 walk, has lead the monthly bird walk for three years. He said the walk will take participants around Dick Young’s lake at a pace of 1 mile an hour. During the walk, participants can chat quietly and record the bird sightings. Then attendees will come back and enter their findings into eBird, an online database used to keep track of bird sightings. “[Bird walk participants] will see their first birds of the

year – they’re the ones that count because they go online and everyone can see what’s out there and expand what they’re looking for,” Murray said.

Walk participants should expect to see or hear 10 to 20 bird species, including blue jays, cardinals and robins, during the walk, Murray added.

The walks will be canceled only in the case of severe weather or a blizzard. Participants are strongly advised not to bring unleashed pets.

Teen won’t leave abusive home despite pleas Dear Abby: Last week, my best friend, “Lana,” tried to kill herself. I’m not sure anyone else knows. Her brother beats her, and her mom yells at her for being “ungrateful” when she asks to spend a night elsewhere. My family has offered several times to let Lana live with us, as have her grandparents. After this week, I have begged her to. She still refuses.

Her plan is to move in with her boyfriend when she turns 18 in a few months. He’s a good guy, but I don’t think it will be good for her. I know they always say to tell an adult about a situation like this one, but Lana claims she’s not strong enough to actually leave before then – and she kept a secret of mine almost as big.

I’m scared and don’t know what to do. I love Lana and I know doing the wrong thing could end up with her dead. – Terrified BFF In Tennessee Dear Terrified: If Lana tried to kill herself because of what’s happening at home, she can no longer remain there. Talk to

Home treatments can help heal ‘pink eye’ Dear Doctor K: My daughter’s eye is red. Does she have conjunctivitis? If so, what’s the best way to treat it? Is there any way to prevent it?

Dear Reader: It could be conjunctivitis, but it also could be several other conditions. If her eye has one bright red area, but she doesn’t have discomfort, it could be that a tiny blood vessel has burst. It may sound bad, but it’s a simple and common condition that will slowly go away. But if the eye is extremely painful, it could be conditions that actually threaten her vision, including iritis and glaucoma. She should seek immediate medical care.

And it could well be conjunctivitis. Also known as “pink eye,” it is redness and swelling of the conjunctiva, the tissue covering the “whites” of the eyes and the inside of the eyelids.

Conjunctivitis usually causes a thick, green-yellow discharge that makes the eyelashes stick together, particularly at night. It may also be accompanied by pain, discomfort, itchy, watery eyes and sensitivity to light.

Pink eye is usually caused by a bacterial or viral infection.

Whichever it is, it is highly contagious.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff If you suspect your daughter has conjunctivitis, make an appointment with her pediatrician.

If your daughter has conjunctivitis caused by a bacterial infection, the doctor will prescribe an antibiotic ointment or eye drops.

If no bacterial infection is present, he or she may also prescribe antibiotics to prevent one from occurring.

If the conjunctivitis is caused by a virus, it probably is a virus called adenovirus, for which antiviral treatment does not yet exist.

So treatment will be drops that help relieve the symptoms. Your doctor probably will recommend that you follow up with an eye doctor (ophthalmologist).

You can do several things at home to help your daughter feel better. For example: • Use an over-the-counter saline solution to wash discharge and irritants out of the eye.

• Apply cool or warm compresses several times a day. You can do this by holding a wet washcloth over the closed eye for

five to 10 minutes. Make sure you clean the washcloth in hot, soapy water before using it again.

• Clean the eye carefully with warm water and cotton balls to remove any discharge.

• Try to keep her from scratching or rubbing the eye.

While caring for your child, make sure that you wash your hands before and after applying any medication or touching your child’s eyes. And wash all towels, washcloths, sheets and pillowcases that your child has used in hot, soapy water.

You can help prevent future episodes of conjunctivitis by teaching your child to wash her hands regularly and to not touch her eyes.

What about school? Because conjunctivitis is so contagious, you should keep your child out of school until at least 24 hours after treatment has started. The school may have its own rules on this, so check with the school nurse before sending your child back to class.

Former unpopular student concerned about reunion Dr. Wallace: I was not popular as a high school student. I was rather frumpy, a bit overweight and had complexion problems. My only saving grace was that I was intelligent. Actually, this didn’t help my popularity – my fellow students didn’t want me in their classes because I raised the grading curve. I was the valedictorian of my graduating class and spoke at the ceremony, but I only got a smattering of applause from my peers. Only my family made noise when I walked across the stage to receive my diploma from our assistant principal.

Many other students had loud roars when their names were called.

I have now graduated from college and am working full time on my master’s degree.

I eventually will earn a Ph.D. and teach in a college or university.

I have slimmed down since my high school days, and my complexion is perfect. I’ve had a full and enjoyable social life at the University of Arizona.

I joined various clubs and organizations and wound up as president of my sorority. I guess you could say that I was a popular university student. I will always return to the U of A come reunion time because of the wonderful time I had on campus.

Now comes the problem! My high school is having a five-year reunion soon. The only friend I had in high school is encouraging me to go.

I really don’t want to because I’m not sure I want to be reminded of the unhappy four years I spent being

I know that if I asked you if I should attend my high school reunion your answer would be, “Yes, go to your reunion and enjoy yourself.” I’m not so sure I can do that. Dear Nameless: You’re right that I’m a big fan of reunions.

Whenever possible, I attend not one, but three of them: my Emerson High School reunion in Gary, Ind.; the Knox College reunion in Galesburg, Ill.; and the USS Yancey reunion in Norfolk, Va. I enjoy them all very much.

(It’s interesting to see how my classmates and shipmates have all aged, while I have somehow managed to stay young!)

So yes, I would encourage you, by all means, to attend your high school reunion.

The fact that you have a friend urging you to go should be enough stimulus to do so. Go with a positive attitude and a smile on your face. I’m almost certain you will be pleasantly surprised.

You have far more self-confidence than you did when you were younger. That will make all the difference. A high school reunion is also an excellent place to display the new you.

Bridge contracts have a goal for both sides. If you don’t know where you are aiming, your side is in trouble. And most deals have a theme. Today’s is common in no-trump, but much less so in a suit contract. That makes it harder to spot.

West leads the spade nine against four hearts. How should South continue after winning the first trick with dummy’s ace?

South’s two-heart rebid showed at least a six-card suit and 6-9 high-card points. North, knowing of an eight-card fit and having a promising number of winners, took a shot at game.

South has four losers in his hand: one heart (if trumps are 4-1, the contract is surely failing) and three diamonds.

However, he has 11 winners: one spade, five hearts and five clubs. His goal is to get to 10 tricks before the opponents can reach four – but how?

Suppose declarer immediately draws two rounds of trumps, then plays on clubs.

East trumps the third club and shifts to the diamond king. The defenders take three tricks in that suit for down one.

Instead, South should play a low trump from both hands at trick two. If the defenders then play three rounds of diamonds, the last can be ruffed on the board. If they take two diamonds ending with West and he leads another spade, declarer ruffs, draws trumps, and runs dummy’s clubs.
