LOCAL NEWS Sugar Grove man hurt in Sycamore accident SHAW MEDIA SYCAMORE – A 20-yearold Sugar Grove man was in serious condition Friday after a car crash that took place on Christmas Day. A 34-year-old Cortland man faces drunken driving charges in the crash after police said he disobeyed a stop sign and struck another vehicle.

Conar Dieckman, of the 100 block of West Christopher Avenue, Cortland, was driving a 2005 Ford E-250 east on Barber Greene Road around 9 p.m. Thursday when he disobeyed a stop sign at Airport Road, according to a news release from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department.

Dieckman struck a 2002 Pontiac Grand Am driven by Ashley A. Engelhart, 21, of Aurora.

Engelhart’s passenger, John L. Galvin Jr., 20, of Sugar Grove, was taken to Kishwaukee Hospital in DeKalb and later flown to OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford, where a nursing supervisor said he was in serious condition Friday.

At the time, Engelhart was turning west onto Barber Greene from Airport Road in rural Sycamore, police said.

Cortland emergency personnel removed Engelhart from the vehicle and took her to Kishwaukee Hospital, where officials said she was treated and released.

Dieckman was arrested and charged with DUI, driving with a blood-alcohol content of more than .08 percent and disobeying a stop sign.

‘He was always a gentleman’ John Gaines of Geneva dies at 74

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – John Gaines, 74, the husband of Geneva Chamber of Commerce President Jean Gaines, was identified as the man who was found dead Friday afternoon in a creek at Geneva Golf Club, police said.

John Gaines of Geneva was pronounced dead at 1:50 p.m., after a golfer saw him face down in the creek and called 911.

Geneva Mayor Kevin Burns said Gaines’ death “is an unspeakable tragedy and immeasurable loss.”

“I’ve known him for many, many years,” Burns said. “His talent was in office design work and consultation and how to maximize limited space.”

Geneva police stated in a news release that John Gaines currently nothing indicates foul play or criminal activity was involved, but police “will continue to investigate the circumstances of

Cab driver relishes his role in helping people get around

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com Steve Moline’s attempt to get his passenger down Randall Road on Monday was easier said than done.

Their destination was Delnor Hospital, but traffic was backed up by Crate and Barrel at the Geneva Commons. Eventually, motorists started weaving through the Commons to head south.

“When it gets colder, you get a little busier,” Moline said, sitting in a white Ford Crown Victoria with the words “Fox Cab” on the outside.

Moline, 61, is one of seven drivers who lease cabs from Fox Cab Inc., which has been serving the Tri-Cities area since 1986.

Moline has been a cab driver on and off for seven years.

He started his first year driving in the summer as something to do in the off months while he was a band director in Yorkville Community Unit School District 115. He retired from teaching in 2013.

“My wife is friends with [Fox Cab co-owner Charlie Mac Brayne’s] wife, that was the connection,” Moline said.

Moline typically works from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays. Usually, there is another taxi driver working the same shift, plus Mac Brayne.

The number of runs that Moline might go on in one day varies. One day’s pay might be $22, then he could make $100 the next.

Moline gets his assignments from Mac Brayne via cellphone and jots down the details on a small yellow legal pad in pencil. The company’s rides are usually to and from destinations within the Tri-Cities, but they will occasionally drop customers off in Elgin, Aurora, O’Hare and Midway airports.

There seem to be more cab companies out there in recent years, but Fox Cab has its regular customers like everyone else does, Moline said.

on a formula that includes the total mileage for the day. All drivers pay for their own gas, Moline said.

Moline said he does not advise people on what to tip. He has been completely stiffed on the entire fare before, but he said that’s a rare occurrence.

Moline welcomes the work commute from his home in Naperville because he grew up in Geneva. As he drives around the city, he said he can recognize the houses of friends he used to visit when he was a child.

“You’re helping people, that’s all, get from one point to the next,” Moline said.

Melinda Drake buckled her son, Asher, 19 months old, into his stroller as she and her husband, Isaac Drake, were headed into The Quad St. Charles, the day after Christmas.

“We’re cashing in some gift cards,” Melinda Drake said. “No returns, just doing a little shopping.”

Traditionally, the day after Christmas is the day for returns, exchanges and hitting the after-holiday sales.

But for Mary and William Collins of Elgin, it was a day to go to the movies at the former Charlestowne Mall.

“We’re going to see ‘Unbroken,’ ” William Collins said.

“I read the book, and now we’re seeing the movie.”

Larry was loved very much by his family and friends, and will be greatly missed. He spent most of his life in Florida enjoying the weather and spending time with friends. He was a computer graphics designer who was able to combine his creativity and his love for science and science fiction. Larry was honored by NASA for creating a logo patch which was to have been used for a shuttle mission. He had many talents, and loved sharing them with all who knew him.

His family has enjoyed the opportunity to spend more time with Larry after he moved to the Chicago area in 2012, enabling him to attend his grandchildren’s sporting events, plays and concerts, which he thoroughly enjoyed. Larry loved living by the ocean and watching the seagulls fly. He was inspired by the book Jonathan Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach, and frequently quoted lines from the story. “For there are no more limits to flight When one has achieved Love.” Larry experienced love with family and friends, and now he is living in love in heaven.

A private memorial service and interment will be in Florida.

Richard DeTamble, 76, of Sugar Grove, peacefully passed away Monday, December 22, 2014, at his home surrounded by family.

He was born July 28, 1938, in Detroit, MI. He was the son of the late Glenn and Della (Tanner) DeTamble. Richard served his country with the U.S. Air Force where he started his career as an Air Traffic Controller. He met and married his wife then moved Sugar Grove, IL to raise his family and continue his career with the F.A.A. as an Air Traffic Controller.

After his retirement he continued to instruct future Air Traffic Controllers.

He was also a volunteer for the Sugar Grove Fire Department. He was the happiest when he was able to spend time with his grandchildren, take long walks with his wife, garden, take care of his lawn and golf.

Richard is survived by his wife, Marcia DeTamble of Sugar Grove; his daughter, Dawn Indrisek of Batavia; his son, Richard DeTamble of Elgin; his seven grandchildren, Ryan DeTamble, Aly DeTamble, Kyle DeTamble, Kurtis (Zoe Hatzis) Nelson, Matthew (Sara Brandenburg) Nelson, Abbey Nelson and Elliott Indrisek; his great grandchildren, Savannah Moore, Della Nelson and Olive Nelson; his sister, Barbara DeTamble; and many other family and friends.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his grandchildren, Richard DeTamble Jr. and Joy DeTamble; and his brother, Thomas DeTamble.

Helen J. Peterson, age 83, of Geneva, passed away on Wednesday, December 24, 2014, at Delnor Hospital in Geneva. She was born October 31, 1931, in Chicago, the daughter of Gifford A. and Helen I. Johnson. She was united in marriage to Leighton S. Peterson on August 19, 1950, in Batavia.

Helen was a skillful artist and enjoyed painting, sew and many other crafts. While in college, she participated in synchronized swimming. Helen was a wonderful mother and was involved with many of the kids activities, including being the den mother for her daughter’s Brownie Group.

She spent time with her husband camping during the winter in Florida. She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Batavia and a longtime volunteer for the Salvation Army.

She is survived by her children, John (Laura) Peterson, of Batavia; Julie (Mike) Fulk of Sycamore, Joe (Elizabeth) Peterson of St. Charles; her four grandchildren, Katie, Carrie, Shelley and Mark; a great-grandson, Finley; a sister, Katherine (William) Armstrong, of Louisville, Kentucky; and many nieces, nephews and dear friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by beloved husband, Leighton S. Peterson; a son, James Peterson; and a brother, Donald Johnson.

Batavia races up in the air

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Ron Rechenmacher on Friday said he has not yet decided whether he will run for both the Batavia City Council and the Batavia School Board in the April 7 consolidated election.

Rechenmacher has filed nominating petitions to run both for the Batavia School Board and for the 6th Ward on the Batavia City Council. Michael Russotto also is running for the 6th Ward seat.

Rechenmacher said he met with Russotto earlier this week.

“I would like to give people a choice for alderman,” he said. “There’s only one other person on the ballot.”

Rechenmacher lost last year in a three-way race for the 6th Ward. So far, there is an ad-

ditional contested race for Batavia City Council. Incumbent 1st Ward Alderman Carl Fischer filed nominating petitions, as did Carl Dinwiddie.

In October, Fischer was appointed to fill an empty seat on the City Council following the resignation of 1st Ward Alderman Garran Sparks. Dinwiddie also applied for the post.

Rechenmacher is one of eight candidates running for three seats on the Batavia School Board in April. Other candidates include former Batavia High School social studies teacher John Dryden, Batavia School Board President Cathy Dremel, board member Melanie Impastato, William “Bill” Gabriel, Ellen Knautz, Christopher Lowe and Michelle Olache.

Monday was the last day for candidates to file nominating petitions.

Hundreds of European starlings, Sturnus vulgaris, have adopted it as a foraging spot and day roost, picking at the ground for food and then resting on utility wires, goal post crossbars and other convenient horizontal surfaces.

As quintessential “guests that wouldn’t leave,” the starlings have become a fixture in the park, causing those of us who work there to speculate on when, or even if, they are ever going to leave.

We are not alone.

European starlings actually wore out their welcome here in the United States several decades ago. “Invited” or, in ecology terms, introduced, in 1890 in New York’s Central Park, the first birds were part of a program initiated by a group known as the American Acclimatization Society. As Shakespeare aficionados, these folks thought it a fine goal to import examples of all bird species The Bard mentioned in his various works. Many of these attempts failed, but starlings (and, incidentally, house sparrows) eventually attained success. Aided by humans’ agriculture and development activities, the birds found ideal habitat at almost every turn.

By 1950, they had reached the West Coast and Mexico; today, their North American numbers are estimated at upward of 200 million.

(I know, their rapid colonization in many ways parallels that of other introduced species – namely the settlers so many of us are descended from.

While a wonderful discussion topic, there’s neither time nor space to take it on here. If you’d like, though, you could broach it with friends and family over a cup, or punchbowl, of eggnog.

You might even want to take it up with your own Thing That Wouldn’t Leave, in hopes that s/he just might.)

At any rate, today starlings present us with a mixed bag of habits that, at their best, help keep insect populations in check, but simultaneously have resulted in huge agricultural losses, as well as undue pressure on various native bird

European starlings molt in fall, replacing old feathers with new ones that have bright white tips. Over time, these ends wear off, and by spring the birds have attained a breeding plumage that is dark and iridescent. species.

Gifted with an unusual jaw musculature, which works to spring the starling’s bill open as opposed to clamping it shut, the birds are able to poke and pry into soil and remove all manner of invertebrate prey.

While they have been credited with helping to control both damaging crane fly and Japanese beetle larvae, they consume helpful species, too, including spiders.

Starlings have a taste for

berries, both wild and cultivated; they also avail themselves of free handouts at birdfeeders, eating seeds, as well as suet. On farms, the birds help themselves to grain fields and cattle feed, leaving excrement, bacteria and parasites in their wake; USDA statistics indicate that starling control measures combined with losses add up to an astounding $800 million annually. Whether they are helping or harming, the birds are certainly numerous – and

that’s what has me most concerned. The flock (or flocks, since I don’t know whether I’m seeing the same group or different ones each day) seem to consist of at least a couple hundred birds at a time. Any vertebrate present in that quantity certainly will put a strain on available resources – primarily, food and shelter. The more food the starlings consume, and the more territory these aggressive birds occupy, the less that will be available for native species.

At Hickory Knolls, our dedicated volunteer Mike Swanson has gone to great lengths to make sure starlings do not displace the purple martin colony he has worked to establish. His houses now include special crescent-shaped Starling Resistant Entrance Holes that keep S. vulgaris, which has longer legs and a thicker body than Progne subis, the purple martin, from entering the structures and attacking and killing adults and offspring.

Meanwhile, though, I can’t but wonder if the efforts of Mike and others like him are being offset by what I see as a design flaw in one of the most ubiquitous structures in our suburban landscape: the light pole. Each spring and summer,

I see starlings disappearing inside of poles that hold up both street lights and traffic lights.

Shoot, we even had a starling nest inside a pole in the parking lot of Hickory Knolls.

Whether this phenomenon is a result of caps that have blown off, or whether the caps are nonexistent, I don’t know.

But it does seem like starlings have found that the holes in these virtually predator-proof poles make excellent cavities for rearing young. If you figure an average clutch size of four eggs, and multiply that by the number of metal light poles in our area ... well, the figures become staggering in no time.

They might not be smoking cigars in our living rooms, nor raiding our refrigerators, but European starlings have found plenty of ways to make themselves at home. Try as we might to get them to move along, they are The Things That Wouldn’t Leave.

Oil prices shouldn’t cause deflation fear

By RAMESH PONNURU Bloomberg News Most Americans are happy that the price of oil has tumbled, helping consumers while hurting nasty regimes abroad. There are always worriers among us, though, and what has them alarmed today is that this decline will tip the U.S. into a damaging round of deflation.

There’s no need to join them in their gloom. Deflation isn’t something we should fear.

What matters is what’s causing prices to decline: an increase in productivity or a decline in economic activity. Only in the second case is there a serious danger that the Federal Reserve should try to respond to. Similarly, rising prices can be a sign that monetary policy is too loose, but also can reflect declines in productivity.

And so changes in the price level, or prospective changes in it, easily can lead central banks astray. A runup in oil prices, much of it caused by supply disruptions, made the Fed excessively concerned about inflation in 2008, which is one reason it was slow to react to the financial crisis. (When Lehman Brothers collapsed that year, the Fed was so concerned about inflation that it initially declined to cut interest rates.)

The current fall in the price of oil is creating a bias in the opposite direction. It’s stirring up fears of deflation and leading to calls for looser monetary policy. This reaction is less likely to prove catastrophic than the error of 2008. But it is still an error. If inflation expectations are falling because markets expect the Fed to run an excessively tight policy over the next decade, or predict a long depression, it’s a reason to loosen monetary policy.

If they’re falling because markets expect more abundant energy, on the other hand, it’s just a reason to celebrate.

There are, however, two wrinkles worth noting. One is that although the fall in the price of oil doesn’t appear to reflect any weakness in the U.S. economy, weakness abroad might be a factor. But that’s a reason to loosen money elsewhere, not in the U.S. A second is that there is a reasonable argument that monetary policy in the U.S. has been a little too tight even leaving aside this price decline.

If that’s correct, then some added pressure for loosening, even if that pressure is based on a mistaken worry, might not be such a bad thing.

If money has indeed been too tight, then it might not be a bad thing for fear of deflation to exercise a countervailing pressure on the central bank. That fear, however misguided, might make the Fed less likely to raise interest rates prematurely.

But these people who are 20 or 30 years old, working at McDonald’s and wanting to make $13 to $15 an hour. If they get $13 to $15 an hour, what about health care? The CNAs who help people who are homebound are more important. That

is a career that they chose. If they don’t like McDonald’s or Wendy’s, let them find a career that’s going to pay them more money. I can’t see making fries at $13 to $15 an hour. How about giving a much-needed raise to the nurses who come visit the homebound? They are the ones who need raises.

Don’t deny freedom of speech It’s a shame that Sony allowed an isolated country, such as North Korea, to trample on their freedom of speech. And to the caller who said Sony abused the freedom of speech, he is wrong.

He is the one denying Sony freedom of speech. Whether he likes the movie or not to be released on Christmas Day, Sony has the right to do so. And to deny them that right is wrong.

Why can’t we get along?

I hate to see anyone die, be it old age or accident or by the hand of any weapon. Some deaths by weapon are truly uncalled for, but a fatality of that action doesn’t really give one the right to loot, burn down someone’s business or to hold up ordinary citizens the right to get home. I felt so bad

when the two police officers were [shot] in their squad car.

They were just doing their job, protecting the community they were working in. There was no rioting, no looting, no burning and no sitting in the street. But these two men were laid to rest just before Christmas, a time to rejoice and celebrate the birth of our savior. Why can’t we all just get along?

I’m responding to “Learn our language.” How can you know that the immigrants will learn and speak our language after being here for three years?

Who is going to police them?

That makes no sense. If they are here illegally, they are here working. But I think they should organize to have them in a draft. When the men or women, after so much time, do that for the United States, join the Army, Navy, Air Force, then, when they come back, they can stay here. None of them are going to sign up to help the United States. … They should earn their keep. A lot of us have sons and daughters who are in the military. Yes, they enrolled. That’s what they wanted to do. But how many of the immigrants will do that? …

The junior forward’s 19-point performance highlighted the St. Charles North girls basketball team’s 63-41 win over Resurrection on Friday in the first round of Dundee-Crown’s Christmas tournament.

However, Jakaitis, along with the rest of the North Stars (9-3), was slowed by Resurrection’s zone defense in the opening quarter and fell victim to the Bandits’ strong 3-point shooting.

Resurrection (6-4) extended its 17-14 first-quarter lead to nine points after consecutive 3-point shots from junior guards Maddie Larsen and Jessica Pawula to open the second period. North responded by locking down on defense and orchestrating an 11-0 run, with all points coming from inside the paint or via free throws.

“They were lighting it up,” St. Charles North coach Sean Masoncup said of Resurrection’s initial scoring output.

“It felt like they didn’t miss.

But I think part of that had to do with our rotations, that we were doing a better job of closing out and rushing them.”

North’s adjustments on defense allowed it to get comfortable offensively. The North Stars were able to work the ball inside to Jakaitis (6-2) and fellow junior forward Morgan Rosencrants (6-1), who used their height advantage to get open looks near the basket.

Rosencrants had four points in the period, while Jakaitis exploded for 13 points.

“They gave her great passes, setting her up a lot,” Masoncup said. “Once we get the ball in to Claire and she scores a couple, that opens it up for everyone else.”

Jakaitis thought she was able to establish herself near the basket due to the sheer volume of times she was fed the ball in the paint.

“They kept passing me the

Masoncup was pleased with his team’s win despite its slow start.

“We weren’t sharing the basketball, someone was putting the ball on the floor and going to the rim and once we started sharing, it was a much different basketball game,” Masoncup said.

Also at Dundee-Crown, Burlington Central continued its early season dominance, as it topped Bartlett, 52-44, to push its record to 10-0.

The Rockets managed just a three-point lead at halftime, as the Hawks (7-5) were able to pierce Central’s full-court press to set up easy looks at the basket. In the third quarter, Central turned the game around, as its defense stiffened and allowed just 17 points the rest of the way.

“I thought the second half was much better, we just gave up too many points,” Central coach Mark Smith said. “Wellcoached team, they took advantage of our press and got a lot of easy baskets in the first half.”

Senior forward Alison Colby, who led the Rockets with 12 points, was pleased with her team’s ability to adjust to Bartlett’s high level of intensity on both ends of the court. She thought the Hawks’ aggressiveness eventually led to their demise.

“They were leaving the lanes pretty open, they were overplaying us,” Colby said.

“So once we started cutting in the middle, things started opening up.”

Vollbrecht, a multisport standout who takes occasional ballet lessons to improve his footwork, revved up the Vikings bench by nimbly weaving through traffic off a steal and finishing with an emphatic dunk.

“I surprise myself sometimes,” Vollbrecht said. “People don’t see a 300-pound kid really moving.”

Vollbrecht is arguably Geneva’s most-improved player this season, having spent much of his sophomore season hampered by foul trouble.

“A lot is my own mind,” Vollbrecht said. “Sometimes I’d get mad at myself and I’d show it a little more and I’d foul more but I realized it was kind of selfish for me, and it’d be easier to help out the team if I didn’t get those fouls called on me and I could

maintain my temper.”

Geneva led, 38-25, after a first half that included consecutive fast-break dunks for Bennett Fuzak and Navigato.

Thirteen Vikings scored on the day as several members of Geneva’s long bench took advantage of second-half playing time. Jack Dreyer and Ryan Ralston each were 2 for 2 from the floor, with both of Dreyer’s shots and one of Ralston’s coming from 3-point land.

ACC (3-5) was paced by 23 points from Brett Czerak and 11 for Evan Schuetz.

“We wanted to get out in transition and make them run and try to get up some 3s before they were back,” ACC coach Nate Drye said. “That was kind of the game plan.

We got that going. I thought early in the game we were able to do that … I thought it kind of broke down, though, when we had too many turnovers. Turnovers happen and you can’t really push the ball.”

Pool play at East Aurora continues today with Geneva facing Urban Prep and ACC battling Neuqua Valley.

“I’ve developed my 3-point shot throughout the high school years, but I’ve mostly been playing the 4 [in the past]. With the height that we have, it’s worked out that I’ve been able to play the guard position. If there are mismatches, I can post up against a smaller player or I can take a bigger [defender] out and shoot on the perimeter.”

By RUSSELL HODGES editorial@kcchronicle.com DeKALB – Three games into the St. Charles East boys basketball team’s first year in the Chuck Dayton Holiday Classic and the Saints still are searching for a challenge.

East advanced to the championship game of the Chuck Dayton Holiday Classic after defeating Glenbrook North, 7352, Friday night.

Senior point guard Cole Gentry scored 15 points in 18 minutes and gave the Saints a

big boost early in the first quarter.

“Gentry’s been our spark all season long,” East coach Pat Woods said. “I thought he set the tone, especially defensively.”

Senior center Jack Bronec dominated the low post, scoring 11 points, grabbing six rebounds and blocking one shot.

“He’s been close to double-doubles this whole tournament,” Woods said. “The better he gets, the better we get.”

East entered the game on an offensive tear. The top-seeded

Saints scored 102 points in their opening-round game Monday against Mundelein and scored 89 points against Sterling in Tuesday’s second round.

But it was the Saints’ defense that loomed largest against Glenbrook North. The Spartans scored just 13 firsthalf points, three in the second quarter. The Saints had nine steals in the game and forced 19 turnovers.

“It’s a focus we have this year,” Woods said. “We’ve been able to score points. …

The issue [in the past] has been

our defense. We’ve really dedicated ourselves to the concept of stops now.”

The Saints (11-1) have won nine consecutive games. They will face tournament host DeKalb for the championship at 8 p.m. tonight after the Barbs topped Moline in Friday’s first semifinal.

AURORA – Bennett Fuzak is living the big man’s dream.

Many a high school basketball player who stands 6-foot-7 craves the freedom to roam the perimeter and let a few fly from 3-point land. For Fuzak, it’s his job, and on Friday, he did it well.

Fuzak scored an efficient 18 points to help spark the Geneva boys basketball team to an 89-49 romp against Aurora Central Catholic in the first round of the East Aurora Holiday Tournament. With the Vikings blessed with ample size – including Bennett’s 6-10 brother, Chandler – Bennett Fuzak started as a guard Friday and canned a pair of 3-pointers while also showcasing his ability to score near the basket.

“I’ve developed my 3-point shot throughout the high school years, but I’ve mostly been playing the 4 [in the past],” said Fuzak, a Wheaton Academy transfer who accepted congratulations from a Warriors coach as his former team prepared to

take the floor after Geneva’s win. “With the height that we have, it’s worked out that I’ve been able to play the guard position. If there are mismatches, I can post up against a smaller player or I can take a bigger [defender] out and shoot on the perimeter.”

The Vikings (8-1) are comparatively thin in the backcourt but Bennett Fuzak can be part of the solution there if he plays like he did Friday.

“He’s kind of shown himself to be our No. 2 shooter behind Nate (Navigato),” Geneva coach Phil Ralston said.

“It’s nice when it’s a guy that has got some length because it’s, OK, pick your poison. If you’re going to put a small guy on him, he can post him up, too, so you like that aspect of what Bennett can bring.”

Navigato added 16 points and junior forward Loudon Vollbrecht had 14, 12 coming during a first half in which he muscled through contact to draw a trio of three-point play opportunities.

Batavia boys drop tournament opener Oswego pulls away in 2nd half of Bulldogs’ Jack Tosh debut

By IAN MATTHEWS editorial@kcchronicle.com ELMHURST – Batavia boys basketball coach Jim Nazos was unclear why the Bulldogs had issues in the effort department Friday afternoon after a 64-47 loss to Oswego in the first round of the Jack Tosh Holiday Classic at York.

While effort doesn’t show up in the stat sheet, rebounds and easy baskets do as Oswego more than doubled up Batavia on the boards (3617) while earning most of its points from 10 feet or closer.

Batavia (6-5) was able to hang around for the first half thanks to nine points from point guard Kamontez Thomas as the Bulldogs trailed, 31-25. But a 20-point Oswego third quarter put the Panthers up by 10 and they were never seriously threatened thereafter.

“Oswego is good, but I didn’t like our conversion defense and we got outrebounded,” Nazos said. “If we don’t get back and take care of the boards, it doesn’t matter what happens on the other side of the floor. They out-ran us and out-rebounded us and it showed up big on the final score.”

Batavia traded baskets with the Panthers (5-4) in the early minutes of the third quarter, pulling to within 3532 after a 3-pointer by Jacob Roberts (10 points) with 6:34 to go.

But Oswego went on a 14-4 run over the next 3-plus minutes to open up a double-digit advantage.

Five different players scored for the Panthers during the spurt that included four layups as Oswego led, 51-41, after three.

Thomas split a pair of free throws at the start of

the fourth quarter to cut Oswego’s lead to 51-42, but that would be as close as Batavia would come. Canaan Coffey’s 3-pointer with 5:21 to go was the only field goal of the quarter for the Bulldogs as Oswego pulled away.

“You look at their shot chart and the entire game’s in the paint – we can’t do that,” Coffey said. “If we’re going to have teams beat us, have them beat us from outside and not in the paint. That’s one of our biggest things. We didn’t bounce anyone out on drives, we were bad help-side – we just need to clean that up for tomorrow.”

Oswego’s Zachery West had a big fourth quarter, scoring seven of his 16 points in the stanza that included a run-out dunk and a traditional three-point play. The emphatic dunk gave the Panthers their biggest lead of the night at 62-47 and put a lid on any Batavia comeback chances.

“We have to pick it up for tomorrow and come out hard and intense,” Coffey said.

“That’s one of the things we

lack – we need to be intense coming out on the floor. Like coach says, we catch people not attack them and be aggressive. We just need to start out strong tomorrow.”

Thomas (13 points), Coffey (12) and Roberts (10) were all in double figures for Batavia, which play today at 11:30 a.m. in the consolation side of the bracket against Stagg, which fell to Lyons Township.

Brice Robinson led Oswego with a double-double, scoring 18 points and pulling down 10 rebounds.

The game marked the Bulldogs’ debut at the Jack Tosh tournament. Batavia previously played its Christmas tournament at Elgin but that tournament disbanded after last season.

By RYAN WOODEN editorial@kcchronicle.com PLANO – After a couple days off for Christmas, it would have been easy for the Burlington Central boys basketball team to get off to a slow start in its Plano Christmas Classic opener against Kaneland on Friday night.

What’s unexpected is for a team to come out after a holiday layoff as sharply as Burlington Central did.

The Rockets hit 11 of their 12 first-quarter field goal at-

tempts and built a 29-12 lead at the end of the period. And despite Kaneland’s best efforts to get back into the game, Burlington Central went on to win, 66-57.

“They just tore our defense up,” Kaneland coach Brian Johnson said. “They got wide open shot after wide open shot.

They’re not a bad team, so when you give a team like that open looks they’re gonna make shots.”

For Central, the catalyst for that blistering start was freshman guard Zach Schutta.

Schutta hit on all four of his field goal attempts in the first quarter, knocking down a pair of 3-pointers on his way to a 10-point period. It was his first start of the season after spending the majority of the season as the team’s sixth man, and the youngster capitalize finished with 23 points.

“I was coming off the bench and getting some minutes, but now since I started this game I feel like things are really falling into place,” Schutta said after his big night.

Battle of post stalwarts goes to Red Raiders over Bulldogs

By KEVIN BEESE editorial@kcchronicle.com LOMBARD – The Batavia girls basketball team held Huntley star forward Ali Andrews to six points in the second half.

Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, there also was a first half, which is primarily the reason Huntley (8-3) emerged victorious, 43-37, in both teams’ opening round game Friday in the Montini Christmas Tournament.

Andrews, a 6-foot-2 junior, scored 25 of Huntley’s 28 firsthalf points, including four 3-pointers.

“At one point I looked at our bench and said, ‘If that is the way she is going to beat us, I’ll take it,” Batavia coach Kevin Jensen said of Andrews’ long-range shooting.

Batavia (6-9), however, had its own 6-2 standout junior, Hannah Frazier, to go to throughout the contest. Frazier scored 19 points and had eight rebounds, a block and a steal.

Andrews’ 31 points were inside and outside against Frazier, her Midwest Elite club

teammate. Andrews, nearly singlehandedly, pushed the Huntley lead to as high as 13 points in the first half.

The Bulldogs, however, were able to chip away the rest of the way.

When Batavia guard Bethany Orman hit a 3-pointer with less than 3 minutes to go, the Huntley lead was down, 39-37.

But those would be the last points Batavia would score in the contest as missed opportunities foiled its comeback bid.

Despite Andrews’ impressive first half, Jensen thought his squad did a good job defensively.

“I thought it was our best defensive game in a long time,” Jensen said.

He said Friday’s battle against Andrews was Frazier’s first matchup against a “big-time player” this year and he gave Frazier kudos for the effort.

Frazier said battling her club teammate was a good test for her.

“You always have to have your guard up. You can’t relax against her,” Frazier said.

Andrews also enjoyed the matchup against Frazier.

“It’s fun to play against someone you practice with all the time,” Andrews said.

Andrews said she didn’t come out looking for a big first half, “but I kept getting open looks.”

Huntley coach Steve Raethz thought having sophomore Morgan Clausen able to guard Frazier for much of the contest helped Andrews in the contest.

“Morgan, as a sophomore, has done a wonderful job on defense for us,” Raethz said.

“It was nice to be able to put her on Frazier.”

He said Andrews, who was averaging 20.6 points a game heading into Friday’s contest, has continued to work on her outside shooting, becoming a more complete player.

Raethz was thankful for the first-half cushion the Red Raiders had built.

“Batavia kept coming at us,” Raethz said. “We knew they were going to be a formidable opponent.”

Next up in the Montini tournament, Batavia will take on DeKalb at 8 a.m. today and Huntley will face host Montini at 4:45 p.m.

A junior forward, David scored 18 of his 27 points in the first half and at times seemed to will Kaneland back into the game. Unfortunately for David and the Knights, Central managed to answer each run with a critical bucket.

None were bigger than a possession late in the fourth quarter after Kaneland had trimmed the deficit to nine.

The Rockets (7-4) wound more than 35 seconds off the clock and got a basket from Schutta

to extend the lead back to 11 with under a minute to play.

“Possessions like that are big when you start talking about trying to win games in tournaments as tough as this,” Central coach Brett Porto said. “(Schutta) has got a lot of confidence in himself to make plays like that, and he’s definitely a guy we look to score in crucial moments for us.”

The Rockets advance to a winner’s bracket matchup tonight against Morris while Kaneland will play Seneca in a morning consolation matchup.

East Aurora tournament: PLANO – In the eight days since Newark traveled to Aurora to take on Aurora Christian, Newark boys basketball coach Rick Tollefson hoped that a healthier roster might serve to change the earlier, 74-48 outcome. When the teams faced off Dec. 18, he didn’t have big man Jack Clausel in the center of his offense, and on Friday he was back.

Unfortunately for the Norsemen, Clausel’s 11 second-half points wouldn’t be enough as Aurora Christian defeated Newark again, 6852, to advance to the Round of 8 at the Plano Christmas Classic.

“The kids were all pumped up,” Aurora Christian coach Pat McNamara said of the Eagles’ late first-half run.

“They were all excited out there when [Zach Singer] hit a 3 from the corner over there and that really gave us a lot of momentum going into halftime.”

Aurora Christian opened the second half on a 12-3 run that extended the lead to 18.

Behind 14 points from Singer and 13 from Juwan Sisco, Aurora Christian improved to 7-1 on the season. Newark (5-7) was paced by 13 points

“We have reflected as a team on it, that today was the final practice for the 2014 Bears,” Trestman said from Halas Hall. “We wanted to put our energy and enthusiasm into it. We wanted to

have some fun out here today, which we did. Got some work done along the way.”

Trestman reiterated that he’s not thinking much about the uncertainty that lies ahead and remains focused on getting the team ready for Sunday’s game in Minnesota.

Without playoffs to play for, Trestman was asked what he told the team to play for in the finale.

“For each other. That’s what teams do,” he said.

What’s your early read on the season for you guys?

I think we’re starting off well. We really got to work on moving the ball around and getting into help defense, but if we play as a team, we should come out on top each game.

I’m sure you run up against Glasgow in practice from time to time. Can you just speak to his physicality and how hard that kids plays?

He’s a beast. I mean, he’s gi-normous. But he plays hard, and he plays really aggressive. If he takes it to the rack and just doesn’t hesitate much and just goes with the flow of the game, he’ll be a monster that no one can stop.

How about the way Esp is playing for you guys? That has to be fun to watch.

Knock-down shooter. He doesn’t miss. He’s really good in the paint and he can

I just try to come in off the bench and bring the energy on defense and hit the shots when I need to. When I get open looks, I’ll shoot it, and just try to play defense and limit the turnovers.

It’s good. I had him last year as sophomore coach so I’ve come to know him.

He’s a really good guy. He really works with the kids.

He knows us and works well with us.

Bears re-sign center Garza

By KEVIN FISHBAIN kfishbain@chicagofootball.com LAKE FOREST – It was a good Christmas in the Garza household, as the veteran Bears center received a oneyear contract extension.

Roberto Garza, who turns 36 in March, will start his 176th game and appear in his 206th career contest on Sunday when the Bears end their season in Minnesota, and he’ll be back in 2015. He has been with the Bears since 2005 and missed four games this season with a high ankle sprain.

Prior to that injury, Garza had not missed a game since 2010. Garza said he does think about retirement, but that injury and his offensive line teammates were part of the reason he wanted to return.

“When I got hurt, and those four weeks, watching the team practice, it was tough to sit on the sidelines and right there I knew I wanted to keep going,” he said.

“When I don’t enjoy doing the week in, week out thing then it’s going to be time to retire. Being a part of that offensive line group that we have here, Kyle (Long) and (Matt) Slauson and (Jordan Mills) and (Jermon Bushrod) and even and Taylor (Boggs) is a big part of the reason I want to keep playing.

“I love playing with those guys and obviously the rest of my teammates but I spend a lot of time with the offensive line, so those guys, it’s fun to go out there and try to battle every week.”

Garza said it was good to get this locked down prior to the end of the season, unlike last year, when he had to wait until late February to sign his extension.

“I know I can come back for my 15th year and continue to do the things that I love to do, go out there and play football and especially be a part of this organization and this team,” he said.

There is a lot of uncertainty for the Bears in the coming

days, but Garza knows he’ll be in Chicago next year, and anything outside that isn’t an issue for him.

“Whether it’s coach Trestman or whatever’s going to happen, I want to be a part of this team and this organization.”

According to multiple reports, Garza can earn up to $1.5 million on the contract next season.

“Extremely happy for Roberto, his family and the Chicago Bears that Roberto will remain with the team,” general manager Phil Emery said. “He has been a consistently good positive producer and key contributor to our offensive line for an extended time period along with being a leader and role model to everyone on our team and in the greater Chicago community.”

With the weekly captain rotation this season, Garza is second on the team, being named captain for five games, which is most among offensive players.

WEEKEND LIFE Sorting it all out during the hectic holidays I thought I had my act together.

Thought I was done. Days before Christmas, even a week before, I floated along on a happy cloud of doneness.

I’d made my list, checked it twice (well, 10 times), and had Nothing. Left.

To. Buy. Nothing! Not only that, the gifts for others elsewhere had been mailed, and everything for my own little crew was wrapped. This would be the first Christmas Eve, I realized, that I’d get to head to bed before losing my mind. Before midnight! And the first Christmas Day I’d feel truly well, not nauseous from exhaustion. Oh happy day!

But then someone edited THE LIST. Seems the clock radio with the CD player – you know, that was already wrapped, wouldn’t quite do.

“One with an iPod plug-in (a docking station to charge and play it) would be great,” Holly announced, one afternoon, as she breezed past me in the kitchen.” Well.

I might have ignored it. I tried. The one I’d bought was fine, after all. Days passed. We succumbed to tradition and made those festive snap thingies – you know, those evil little square pretzels with the Hershey kisses and green and red M&M’s on top? Yeah, addicting.

But thoughts about the No. 1 wish on her list kept percolating to the surface.

I know, first-world problem. But it’s Christmas, and I want this one thing to be perfect. It’s for my girl, who used to entertain her stuffed animals with her singing and dancing Santa, the one who sang “Have a Holly Jolly Christmas” every Christmas season. Until,

It’s apparent from their outgoing message that they’ve changed their name since creating their website, but that’s no matter, right? I could “Feel free to place orders on our website.” Right.

Anyhow, I decided that the CD player might be unnecessary if Holly had an iPod dock (she can download her CDs onto the iPod), and shifted gears.

But it seemed that every clock radio with an iPod dock – that also has a 30-pin connector for her vintage iPod – was sold out, nearly everywhere, three days before Christmas. I found two on Amazon, but didn’t feel like paying $30 for shipping to get it home in time, and watched, paralyzed with indecision, as two became one. In vain I called every local store – again. Finally, by some Christmas miracle, I found one.

The last one in Illinois! Could I get my hands on it? Would I catch that sleigh?

For more than 14 years GreenRoom has been performing family-friendly improv shows and will continue to have the First Fridays Improv show each month at the Hemmens’ lower level 200-seat Cabaret Theater in the Round.

Similar to “Whose Line is it Anyway?,” GreenRoom’s improvisers take audience suggestions

and true-life audience stories and turn them into hour-and-ahalf theater pieces on stage.

Dear Abby: Is nitpicking a poor trait to have? I see it as a positive thing as long as matters are brought up in a helpful way. If you want a healthy relationship with the person you live with, isn’t it best to tell her what you think should be done and how?

Two examples: My girlfriend likes to take her socks off when she’s lying on the couch. She rolls them off her feet with the opposite foot and they sometimes end up in the corner of the couch, but most of the time on the floor. Also, dishes never get rinsed off, washed or put away on time. The sock thing is gross, and the dishes end up stinking or the food gets stuck on them. Also, the dishes sit in the strainer, not the cupboard.

The body parts, systems and mechanics of balance Dear Doctor K: What are the body parts, or systems, that help us balance?

Dear Reader: You’re asking a very interesting question. I never even thought about it until I went to medical school. When I learned what I’m about to tell you, I thought it was interesting.

However, I didn’t appreciate how important problems with balance would be for my patients.

A lot of people begin to notice subtle problems with balance when they enter their 60s. Over the next two decades, their balance can become problematic enough that it affects their health.

Poor balance can cause falls that can lead to disability, and sometimes death. Good balance, by contrast, builds confidence and fosters independence.

Our daily balancing acts require intricate coordination between body systems. These include the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord), the vestibular system (brain and inner ear), the visual system (brain and eye), and a vast web of position-sensing nerves called proprioceptors.

• A part of the brain called the cerebellum oversees balance and movement. It receives sensory information, such as sight, sound and touch, from our nerves.

For example, when you face a balance challenge like a slippery sidewalk or rocky path, you have a memory of how you moved your body in the past to deal with such situations.

• The spinal cord serves as a bridge between brain and body.

Nerves along its length receive feedback from the peripheral nervous system, a lacework of nerve fibers that branch out from the central nervous system to the far reaches of the body. The spinal cord also initiates reflexes, such as the quick-stepping response to an unexpected push. It delivers commands to the muscles too, telling them to make voluntary movements.

• The body’s balance mechanism is called the vestibular system. It is housed in the inner ear structure and is made up of three semicircular tubes. These tubes consist of bone-encased membranes filled with fluid and lined with hair cells. As you move, fluid in the canals shifts and bends

the hair cells. This prods them to fire messages to the brain telling it how much you moved and in which direction.

• In the visual system, the eyes send visual information to the brain, continually logging where you are in relation to surrounding objects.

• The position-sensing nerves called proprioceptors are responsible for proprioception – the ability to perceive where your body is in space. Proprioception helps you stay balanced and move through your environment without stumbling or bumping into things.

Found primarily in muscles, tendons and joints, proprioceptors stream information to the brain.

The brain instructs muscles to contract in large or small ways as conditions change (when you’re on uneven ground, for example).

South Korean students face stress Dear Teens: Do you live a happy life, or are you so stressed out that happiness escapes you?

Recently, a study among developed countries found that South Korean students are the least happy. The reason South Korean students ranked at the bottom among 30 countries in terms of students’ satisfaction with their lives was the stress placed on them by their parents to succeed academically. The South Korean government blamed “the country’s educational pressure cooker” as the reason for winding up in last place. Romania and Poland ranked 28th and 29th. The survey only wanted to find out what countries had the least happy students and didn’t disclose the countries with the happiest students. Hopefully, the United States and Canada had students near the top.

According to Dr. Edward Taub at the University of Alabama at Birmingham who co-authored a study of musicians published in the Journal of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, if a person hasn’t started practicing in earnest by age 12, it’s probably too late to be a star.

However, this doesn’t mean that those over 12 shouldn’t start music lessons. If you throw yourself into learning to play the piano, you will enrich your life immeasurably. At this point, don’t worry about becoming a concert pianist; just focus on mastering the instrument and enjoying yourself. Maybe you’ll be the one to contradict all the research.

South has rounded-suit losers and seems to have nine top tricks: six spades, one heart and two diamonds. However, in case the play takes a nasty turn or two, declarer should play to ruff losers on the board.

He wins the first trick with his heart ace, cashes the diamond ace and returns a heart. West, who sees his partner play highlow to indicate a doubleton, wins and continues with the heart 10.

But since South has also noted East’s signal, he discards a club from the dummy. East pitches his second diamond. West now leads his diamond queen, East ruffs dummy’s king, and declarer overruffs. South then concedes a club trick to void the dummy of that suit.

Suppose East wins with his queen and returns a trump. Declarer wins and crossruffs home, trumping two clubs on the board and two diamonds in his hand.
