had the good fortune of witnessing a miracle of sorts last week when Jacqueline Helton-Briggs saw what she believes to be her childhood pony for the first time in almost three decades. Helton-Briggs hopped out of her pickup truck after traveling all day from Kentucky and immediately turned to Casey’s Safe Haven President

Sue Balla and said, “Where is she?”

Helton-Briggs’ pony, Knickers, was sold by her family when she was in college and she had been heartbroken ever since. In a short Internet search, she came across the pony now known as Autumn at Casey’s in Elburn. She knew it was her pony.

After walking through a muddy

field, Helton-Briggs turned and saw Autumn and ran the approximately 200 feet to her waiting friend.

I didn’t expect to see this happen.

Originally, after hearing this story from several sources, we thought we weren’t going to be able to be there for the reunion because of a schedule conflict. So I decided to make an appointment with Sue

to get photos of Autumn going through her daily routine on a different day. But when I arrived at Casey’s, Sue told me, “She’ll be here in 15 minutes.”

And sometimes, I do believe in miracles.

Third Street fireplace adds to Geneva’s downtown amenities

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Shoppers who hunted for bargains on Geneva’s Third Street during the holiday season were greeted with an outdoor gas fireplace between the Geneva History Museum, at 113 S. Third St., and Crystal Life Technology, 121 S. Third St. The fireplace was part of a pedestrian mall project to link the city’s Campbell Street parking lot’s public spaces to the Third Street shopping district, city officials stated in a news release.

The mall project was paid through a $200,000 state capital grant secured by now former State Rep. Tim Schmitz, R-Batavia, as the city did not incur any expenses for the

project, officials said in a statement.

The pedestrian mall was constructed last spring and opened in June for Swedish Days. The fireplace was finished in July and officially turned on a few days before the Christmas Walk earlier this month, officials said.

The walkway is a decorative sidewalk bordered with brick pavers and inlaid with etched granite memorial tiles.

The Geneva History Museum sold the granite memorial tiles as part of the project, with the proceeds of the sale to go into a building maintenance fund, officials said.

The fireplace also has benches allowing the area to serve as a community gathering point during festivals and events, officials said.

The gas fireplace on Third Street in Geneva was part of a pedestrian mall project paid for with a $200,000 state grant. The pedestrian mall connects the Campbell Street city parking lot to Third Street, between the Geneva History Museum and Crystal Life Technology, creating a more attractive walkway to the city’s downtown shopping district.

Jesse White offers Rules of the Road review course

ST. CHARLES – A tree-thinning project will get underway during the week of Jan. 5 at LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve near the Great Western Trail. LeRoy Oakes is at 37W700 Dean St., St. Charles.

This project is part of a two-phase effort to reduce invasive trees and brush and improve the ecological health of the Illinois State Nature Preserve area at the preserve.

Initial tree cutting will be done south of Dean Street, near the Great Western Trail. Other invasive and nonnative trees north of Dean Street will be cut at a later date. The project may prompt brief, temporary closures of the Great Western Trail. Signs are in place to notify preserve and trail users on both sides of the project area. A sign has been placed in the preserve kiosk. LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve will be open during the project, however, preserve and trail users are asked to be mindful of contractors and machinery in the preserve. BATAVIA – Secretary of State Jesse White, in cooperation with the Batavia Park District, is offering a Rules of the Road review course for all citizens in the Batavia area. The course will take place from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Jan. 7 at Eastside Community Center, 14 N. Van Buren St., Batavia. The course is free to anyone who wishes to attend. The purpose of the course is to help participants

pass the Illinois driver’s license renewal examination. The course prepares applicants for the general written and road examinations, and also provides information on the vision screening. For information, contact the Driver Services Department at 312-814-3676.

Secretary of State warns of solicitation targeting Secretary of State Jesse White is warning businesses to beware of a solicitation letter targeting

Illinois corporations. A firm called Annual Business Services is contacting Illinois businesses in an attempt to collect a $125 fee to fill out a corporation’s “corporate minutes,” according to a news release. The fake notice states that the fee must be paid by Jan. 9, the release states. White recommends that corporations do not reply to the solicitation, the release states. The Illinois Business Corporation Act does not require corporations to file an “Annual

Minutes Form” or pay such a fee with the state or any private entity. The only fee that corporations must pay is the fee that is paid with their annual report. Illinois corporations should be on the alert for this and similar attempts to collect fictitious fees. Those who would like to file a complaint in regard to the solicitation can contact the Illinois Attorney General’s Consumer Fraud Division at 800-243-0618.

THE NATIONAL STAGE Orange Bowl to feature St. Charles North Drill Team

CHARLES – With all of the other activities demanding the St. Charles North Drill Team’s attention this month – such as competitions and basketball games – it’s unlikely that the casual observer would guess that an early December practice was for the national stage.

But that’s where the teenagers will be on New Year’s Eve. They, along with other teams from across the country, will perform at Sun Life Stadium in Miami during the Orange Bowl halftime show featuring country quartet Little Big Town.

The 7 p.m. game pits the Mississippi State Bulldogs from the Southeastern Conference against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets from the Atlantic Coast Conference.

This is the North Stars’ second consecutive year performing at a bowl game. In fact, coach Nancy Prentiss said it was the girls’ performance at the Liberty Bowl in Memphis, Tennessee, that led to their invitation to Miami.

“I was really proud they wanted us to come back,” Prentiss said.

Seniors on the team – Eleisse Pettigrew, 18; Isabel Miller, 17; Quinn Samanic, 18, and Bailey Moberly, 17 – said they appreciate the once-in-alifetime opportunity that not all dance teams get.

“It’s an experience we’ll be able to share throughout our lifetime,” Miller said.

Although the team has known about the gig since early January, Prentiss said members couldn’t start practicing for the halftime performance until this month, when they finally got a video of the dances they must learn.

“They’ve already got it down pretty well,” she said, watching their second day of practicing together. “These girls are pretty quick to learn things.”

That’s a good quality to

have, especially since Prentiss said the routines likely will be tweaked once the girls report to rehearsals in Miami.

But their days won’t be all about prepping for halftime.

Prentiss said the teens also will participate in master dance classes taught by choreographers who have worked on Broadway and with such performers as Alicia Keys, Janet Jackson and the dancers on the TV show “So You Think You Can Dance.”

The team is expected to travel to Miami on Sunday and plans to return on New Year’s Day.

“I’m just super excited,” Moberly said, noting that traveling as a team is always fun.

Organizing the trip required more planning than last year’s bus ride to Tennessee, Prentiss said. For Miami, she said, participants are traveling by plane, and the expense – including airfare, hotels and food – cost about $1,000 for each girl; 24 are going.

Fortunately, Prentiss said, the team had money saved from its summer kids camp and received donations from the athletic department and athletic boosters. Prentiss

also credited the teens’ parents for their support, noting how the trip isn’t only costly, but it takes place during the holidays.

“It’s a great opportunity, but at the same time it’s a big responsibility,” Prentiss said.

Is a third bowl game performance in the drill team’s future? Prentiss doesn’t think so, even though she said watching the girls perform at last year’s Liberty Bowl was “such a great thrill.”

Unless the team is invited to the Rose Bowl, Hula Bowl or Super Bowl, she said, “We’re done.”

The Illinois Supreme Court issued a security bulletin Dec. 10 regarding the scam, which involves a phone call to residents claiming that they have missed scheduled jury duty.

In the Kendall County incident, the caller identified himself as Captain David Allen from the “Federal Warrant Division,” according to the bulletin. The caller also provided the name of a sitting 23rd Circuit Court judge as the jurist who issued the arrest warrant.

The caller then advises residents that they can avoid arrest if they pay the “fine” immediately. The caller instructs the victim to obtain a “MoneyPak” – a type of prepaid credit card available at

The caller asks residents to read the numbers from the MoneyPak, and the matter then will be settled, according to the bulletin.

The Kane County Jury Commission does not directly contact citizens by telephone, and it does not issue arrest warrants for failure to appear for jury duty, according to a separate Kane County news release on the scam.

“By state law all initial contact with citizens, by the Jury Commission, is by U.S. Postal First Class Mail,” the news release states.

The Kane County Sheriff’s Office never demands payments of any warrant fine over the phone, according to the release. All payments are made in person inside the sheriff’s office or Circuit Clerk’s Office, and numbered receipts are issued on payment.

ST. CHARLES – St. Charles Free Methodist Church will continue its “Christmas Village and Train” display featuring a Christmas village and electric trains, both modern and antique.

OBITUARIES RICHARD DeTAMBLE Born: July 28, 1938 Died: Dec. 22, 2014 Richard DeTamble, 76, of Sugar Grove, peacefully passed away Monday, December 22, 2014, at his home surrounded by family.

He was born July 28, 1938, in Detroit, MI. He was the son of the late Glenn and Della (Tanner) DeTamble.

Richard served his country with the U.S. Air Force where he started his career as an Air Traffic Controller. He met and married his wife then moved Sugar Grove, IL to raise his family and continue his career with the F.A.A. as an Air Traffic Controller. After his retirement he continued to instruct future Air Traffic Controllers. He was also a volunteer for the Sugar Grove Fire Department. He was the happiest when he was able to spend time with his grandchildren, take long walks with his wife, garden, take care of his lawn and golf.

The Forest Preserve District of Kane County was honored this month with two conservation awards presented by the Chicago Wilderness alliance, according to a news release.

Johnson’s Mound Forest Preserve in Elburn was recognized for achieving the Excellence in Ecological Restoration accreditation. The preserve was one of 10 sites to receive the award in the Chicago region. Additionally, Pingree Grove Forest Preserve earned the Conservation in Native Landscaping Award – one of 13 sites honored with that recognition.

The Chicago Wilderness Excellence in Ecological Restoration program showcases excellence in conservation leadership and site-based restoration by recognizing high-quality natural areas and the organizations that manage them, the release stated.

Through the program, organizations conduct comprehensive self-assessments of their restoration programs and the quality of the natural areas being accredited.

The assessments are based on a set of rigorous, science-based standards that recognize best practices in natural resource management.

Conservation experts from across the region review the assessments to determine if the site meets one of the accreditation levels: Platinum, Gold, Silver or Bronze. The Forest Preserve District received a Platinum accreditation for Johnson’s Mound Forest Preserve.

“This preserve is a favorite of local residents who venture out each spring for a spectacular display of woodland wildflowers,” Drew Ullberg, the county’s director of natural resources, stated in the release.

“Birders know the preserve as a warbler stopover point, with more than 100 different birds documented here.”

The site features a glacial kame cloaked by an oak-hickory woodland. Johnson’s Mound was Kane County’s first forest preserve, the release stated.

The Conservation and Native Landscaping Award recognizes sites within the greater Chicago region that demonstrate excellence in site-based restoration, native landscaping and conservation design. These practices create and protect habitat for a variety of native plant and animal species, and result in important environmental benefits for

Will selling marijuana truly help Indian tribes?

BLOOMBERG NEWS The Justice Department is attempting to solve a problem that almost no one knew about with a solution that almost no one asked for. The results – so far, confusion and uncertainty – have been entirely predictable.

The department announced this month that it would permit marijuana legalization on 300 or so Indian reservations in 30 states. The decision has perplexed American-Indian leaders, who say that the last thing many tribes want is more lax federal law enforcement.

Whatever one may think of legalizing marijuana – and there are plenty of causes for concern, especially regarding its health effects – the way to do it is not to let Attorney General Eric Holder simply pick and choose which federal drug laws he will enforce. Yes, prosecutors have discretion, and it may make sense to use it when a state’s voters decide to legalize pot. It makes less sense when local officials not only haven’t asked, but also rely on the federal government for law enforcement, as is the case with Indian reservations.

It’s not a matter of autonomy – tribal rights are protected by treaty – so much as public health. American Indians have rates of alcohol dependency well above the national average. Ditto for tobacco and illegal drug use.

Mortality rates, too. Keep in mind that regular marijuana use causes respiratory problems and impairments in thinking and memory (especially in young people), and that for many it leads to addiction.

Meanwhile, poverty rates on reservations and labor force participation rates are low. On the long list of things the U.S. government could do to improve life on Indian reservations, making it easier to get marijuana does not make an appearance.

That said, Holder’s directive is problematic from a legal standpoint as well. It doesn’t automatically legalize pot on reservations. Rather, it allows tribes to petition U.S. attorneys to adopt the same look-the-other-way policy that now governs Colorado and Washington. The Justice Department says permission won’t be granted unless the tribes adopt strong regulatory and enforcement frameworks, but that leaves local (and unelected) U.S. attorneys with the power to decide whether tribal rules are adequate to protect people from marijuana’s dangers.

Legalizing marijuana on reservations in this way will create needless conflict and confusion within and among the states. The Mohegan Tribal Council in Connecticut, a state where marijuana is illegal, is interested in the possibility of connecting its struggling casino to a marijuana shop. Allowing the public to buy pot on reservations but not to go home with it will lead to chronic law-breaking – or a surge in driving under the influence. Or both.

Obama’s nominee to succeed Holder as attorney general, Loretta Lynch, is no stranger to enforcing drug laws, having served as the U.S. attorney for parts of New York City. At her confirmation hearing next year, senators should ask her to send this policy up in smoke.

The absolutely essential funding bill of the government just narrowly passed, avoiding a default by the government that would assuredly have caused panic on Wall Street and downgrading of government securities. We should be thankful for that.

However, Republicans in the House attached several amendments, which they knew would not pass under normal proceedings. One of these weakened the Dodd-Frank Act that was designed to avoid another near collapse of the economy brought on by reckless trading in derivatives by major banks.

This amendment weakened the provisions of Dodd-Frank that avoided government bailouts of these banks if they went under.

trading had been unregulated and secretive. Now, it once again becomes possible for a major bank to recklessly trade in highly profitable derivatives with the assurance that the government will bail them out if they fail, as happened after the near collapse of the economy in 2008. Millions of jobs were eliminated, and the stock market tanked when some of these banks failed.

It is reliably reported that Citigroup was behind some of these shenanigans knowing that the opposition and the president would be forced to go along because of the necessity of government funding. In fact, lobbyists for Citigroup practi-

cally wrote the wording of one of the proposed measures. You may recall that a few years ago JPMorgan had a multi-billion loss on derivative trading that apparently the government regulators did not know about until after the fact.

The only major senator who spoke out on this atrocity was Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts. She agreed with the opposition that Dodd-Frank was not strong enough. She said that banks that are too big to fail are too big – they should be broken up.

“I don’t think anybody’s seen the real James McQuillan yet,” Gentry said. “I’m good friends with him and I played with him all summer and we worked out together. I think he’s just going to have a huge year when he gets back.”

McQuillan is back now, providing the surging Saints with another versatile component in what is shaping up as a memorable season. East (101) will go for its ninth straight win in tonight’s Chuck Dayton Holiday Tournament semifinal against Glenbrook North.

McQuillan, a 6-foot-4 junior forward and three-year varsity player, missed four-plus games after a concussion suffered during the first quarter of a Thanksgiving tournament game against St. Joseph, the Saints’ lone loss. He returned in limited duty Dec. 13 against Geneva but only recently has scraped off the rust from his time away.

Two friends vie for one spot Rundblad, Erixon competing to be No. 6 defenseman

By MARK LAZERUS mlazerus@suntimes.com David Rundblad already was out of his gear and skates, had toweled off and had given a few interviews by the time Tim Erixon trudged into the room, sweaty and still trying to catch his breath after the second half of the morning skate, reserved for the Blackhawks’ game-night scratches.

Erixon plopped down on the bench at his locker stall, just a few feet away from Rundblad’s, and the two started conversing in Swedish, smiling and laughing almost immediately. Rundblad was in and Erixon out for the game Tuesday against the Winnipeg Jets that night; the No. 6 defen-

seman spot basically is down to the two of them most nights.

But there was no animosity, no bitterness.

They’re new teammates, but they’re old friends.

“I don’t feel like it’s awkward or anything,” Rundblad said. “He’s a good friend of mine, and I’m just happy to have him here. Hockeywise, we’re competing for the same spot, pretty much. But that’s just natural for a hockey player. That’s just part of the job.”

Rundblad and Erixon, who was acquired this month in the trade that sent Jeremy Morin to the Columbus Blue Jackets, go way back. Rundblad moved to Erixon’s hometown of Skelleftea when he was 15.

They played on the same junior team for three years, then the same Elite League team for three more.

They both were selected in the first round of the 2009 NHL Draft, just six picks apart – Rundblad 17th to the

St. Louis Blues, Erixon 23rd to the Calgary Flames. They both have bounced around the league, struggling to become every-day players in the NHL. And now they’re both on their third line with the Hawks, two friends battling for one spot while Trevor van Riemsdyk recovers from a fractured kneecap.

For Erixon, the sixth Swede on the Hawks’ roster, it has been nice to have a familiar face – and a familiar language.

He even carpools to work with Rundblad.

“There are quite a few Swedes here; it’s different,” said Erixon, who was born in New York while his father, Jan, played for the Rangers but moved back to Sweden when he was 2. “I’ve never really had any other Swedes around, so that’s kind of nice.”

But it still is a business, and Rundblad and Erixon are hoping to win the job permanently.

NOTEWORTHY BC’s Macias making waves Austin Macias registered on Burlington Central coach Vince Govea’s radar well before the season started last month.

Macias made significant offseason waves nationally, for that matter.

The 106-pound freshman was third at preseason nationals and came within one match from placing at Fargo Nationals in North Dakota as a representative of Team Illinois.

Thus far, the reputation Austin Macias that preceded him hasn’t slowed down – much like Macias.

“He’s pretty much been a model of what we’re trying to get our guys to do: our big push in the offseason,” Govea said. “He fits right in.”

Jockeying for the top spot among Class 2A 106-pounders on Illinois Matmen’s rankings, Macias already boasts dominating victories against some of the state’s highest-regarded upperclassmen.

He has defeated seniors Austin Anderson (Freeport) and Corey Muniz (Fenton) by technical fall and remains a force in every

weekend tournament he enters.

“The kid’s just a hard worker. He’s got goals in mind,” Govea said. “His goal is to be state champ. He’s just going to keep working until he achieves his goals.

That’s just the mentality he has.”

Even in a BC mat room already teeming with optimism – the Rockets returned their entire starting lineup, including sectional qualifier Nick Maldonado at 126 – Macias’ focus is contagious.

“He brings a lot to our program,” Govea said. “He’s a hard worker and it’s starting to reflect on everybody else. Even though he’s just a freshman, he’s one of the hardest workers in the room and that just rubs off on everyone else.”

An Aurora police officer, Orosco coached many of the Knights’ freshmen with the Kaneland Knights Wrestling Club. His son, Nathan, is an eighth-grader at Harter Middle School.

Orosco has benefited from familiarity in other areas, too. His staff includes former Knights Mike Thorgesen and Jimmy Boyle.

“They’re familiar with the day-to-day stuff, so they’ve helped me out a lot,” Orosco said.

Defensive ends aim to make most of time in finale

Bass’ most memorable NFL play came in his rookie season, when in Week 11 he flattened Ray Rice in pass protection, timed his leap perfectly at the line of scrimmage and intercepted Joe Flacco before racing 24 yards for the pick-six.

Although they’ve been rare because of his lack of opportunities, flashes like those seem to always come from Bass when he’s on the field.

To what does Bass attribute those types of splash plays?

“Paying attention in meetings and just watching the guys ahead of me,” said Bass, adding that learning from Julius Peppers, Jeremiah Ratliff and Jared Allen have been invaluable. “Obviously watching them, taking notes throughout the offseason and then getting out there and being in the right position at the right time … if I do that then the plays will come to me.”

Drafted one round earlier in the same class, Washington has become a core special teams player in his second season, after what was essentially a redshirt rookie year. At 6-foot-4 and 265 pounds, he has dominant physical tools but came into the NFL with ques-

tions about his work ethic.

Washington admits that becoming a frequent special teams contributor after being active in only two games as a rookie has helped immensely with his development.

“Probably just in my preparation, to be honest with you,” said Washington when asked where he’s made his biggest strides in Year Two. “Kind of knowing you’re not really going to play much to playing a whole lot more this year, you put more into it.

“So I would say my special teams play, just having the opportunity to contribute there, has made my overall game go up a few notches.”

LAKE FOREST – The Bears have swung and missed repeatedly in recent years when investing heavily to rebuild their defensive end group.

General manager Phil Emery over-drafted Shea McClellin, overpaid Jared Allen and appears to have overestimated Lamarr Houston.

The shrewd signing of Willie Young was Emery’s best offseason acquisition, but Young’s breakthrough campaign ended in heartbreaking fashion with a torn Achilles that sometimes take two seasons for players to regain their previous form, if at all.

Allen has a career-low 5.5 sacks and is no guarantee to be back. The same is true for freeagent Stephen Cornelius Paea. Houston is Washington rehabbing from reconstructive knee surgery and provides his biggest impact when sliding inside.

Thus, the Bears will enter this offseason with virtually as many questions as they had before making bolstering the position a focal point mere months ago.

David Bass and Cornelius Washington, the first two in line to replace Young in the season finale Sunday at the Vikings, hope to make compelling arguments that they’re part of the answer.

“I’ve been training this whole offseason and then going into camp and this season for a moment like this. Now I’ve got the moment and I’ve got to make the most of it,” said Bass, who has provided encouraging glimpses in limited opportunities with the Bears since being claimed off waivers from Oakland last summer.

Like Young, Bass is a former seventh-round pick with the length and get-off to pose

on the Bears in special teams tackles (seven), and had his first career sack in Week 12, when he bent the edge against Tampa left tackle Anthony Collins and chased down Josh McCown from behind.

Going up against Bass and Washington every day in practice, Jermon Bushrod offered scouting reports of what Bears fans and the Vikings can expect to see Sunday.

“Bass is really good on his feet; he has great balance and he knows how to use his leverage and use your leverage against you,” said Bushrod on Tuesday. “His hands have gotten really good since last year; he’s just found a way to continue getting better.

“If you look at some of the plays Washington has made on special teams, they’re explosive. The kid is 6-4, 260, 270 pounds, whatever he weighs, he’s a powerful player. He can bend the edge and use his quickness for inside moves. …

I’ve seen him grow in all different aspects.”

From Bushrod to Jordan Mills to Michael Ola, Bears offensive linemen who’ve battled Bass and Washington in practice daily expressed their excitement to see what the pair can do with increased snaps Sunday.

“When you’ve fought against someone and you know how good they are, but another team has no earthly idea, it’s kind of like I’m ready to see the knockout punch,” Ola said.

Short on knockout artists for the present and future, the Bears would like nothing more than to head into the offseason feeling confident about this pair. A strong showing against the Vikings can only help.

Rising to the challenge by the Jeffris Family Foundation to raise $230,000, the friends of Garfield Farm Museum have won a $115,000 challenge grant from the Wisconsin-based foundation to fully restore the museum’s 1842 hay and grain barn, according to a news release. In 15 months, the supporters of the museum contributed sufficient funds to win the grant. Restoration has begun as Trillium Dell Timber Works of Knoxville has lifted the barn four feet with hydraulic jacks so a new foundation can be built. The Jeffris Family Foundation is one of two foundations nationwide that fund exclusively historic preservation activities. Helping to complete the campaign, the Kane County Riverboat Fund made a $28,750 grant this past fall. Overall, more than 400 donors contributed toward the effort. This is the second barn that is being restored at Garfield Farm Museum. Garfield Farm and Tavern Museum is a 375-acre, historically-intact, former Illinois prairie farmstead and teamster inn being restored as an 1840s working farm and inn museum. SUGAR GROVE – Seven local nursing candidates became eligible to join the ranks of health care professionals after graduating from Waubonsee Community College’s nursing program during a pinning ceremony Dec. 18.

The December pinning was one of four such ceremonies in 2014 at Waubonsee, recognizing nursing candidates who graduated at various points in the past year.

December graduates included Elizabeth Hernandez, Jamie Minott and Melissa Sheppard, all of Aurora; Rebecca Greenlee-Lambesis, Kristen Hubbard and Hillary Smith, all of Batavia; and Scott Dixon of Geneva.

He is in the military and fears losing his job if he seeks help. I don’t want to pressure him into seeing a professional, since part of what’s causing his anxiety is being ordered around constantly, but I don’t want him

There are many applications for botox injections Dear Doctor K: I thought Botox was just a wrinkle remedy. But a friend told me she uses it to treat overactive bladder. Then someone else said he had a Botox injection for tennis elbow.

What exactly is Botox? What else does it treat?

Dear Reader: It’s true, Botox’s applications are more than skin-deep. Botox is one brand of botulinum toxin A. This is a substance made by the bacteria responsible for botulism, a foodborne illness that causes paralysis and sometimes death.

When purified and diluted, however, botulinum toxin is a safe and useful drug.

Botulinum toxin is a muscle relaxant. In 1989 the FDA approved it for treating crossed eyes. Next came approval for smoothing facial lines, or wrinkles. Since then, Botox and newer brands of botulinum toxin have been used to treat a growing number of conditions.

Some conditions that injections of botulinum toxin are currently used for include: • Overactive bladder and urge incontinence. Botox reduces episodes of incontinence in people for whom incontinence drugs taken by mouth don’t work.

• Chronic migraine headache.

Botox is approved for treating people with severe, frequent migraines. It doesn’t prevent

• Upper limb spasticity.

Elbows, wrists or fingers often contract uncontrollably as a result of cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, stroke, brain trauma or spinal cord injury. Botox may relax muscles enough to allow people to perform basic activities like washing and dressing.

• Cervical dystonia. Uncontrollable contractions in neck muscles can force the head into awkward and uncomfortable positions. Botulinum toxin is approved for treating cervical dystonia. It relaxes the neck muscles enough to return the head to a more normal position.

• Excessive underarm perspiration. When even the strongest antiperspirants don’t work, Botox can lessen heavy sweating. It does so by blocking the nerve signals that stimulate sweat glands.

• Blepharospasm. Botulinum toxin may treat uncontrolled contractions of eyelid muscles that cause rapid blinking and may even clamp the eyes shut.

• Spasmodic dysphonia.

This unusual disorder affects

about 50,000 people in the U.S. Its cause is unknown. They have trouble speaking smoothly. The words come out in a hesitant and sometimes explosive fashion. Well-known radio commentator Diane Rehm has made public the fact that she suffers from this condition – and has continued her remarkable career with proper treatment.

Once a drug is approved by the FDA, doctors can prescribe it for almost any purpose. This is called “off-label” use. Botulinum toxin is used off label to treat conditions as varied as teeth grinding, tennis elbow and pelvic pain.

It is remarkable that a toxin first known because of the terrible illness it causes, botulism, actually can be an effective treatment for many conditions – if used properly.

Always ride with traffic flow Dr. Wallace: When you wrote about bicycle riders, you said they should always ride with the direction of traffic when riding in the street. My grandpa said that when he learned to ride a bicycle that he was told to ride facing the flow of traffic. Who is wrong here?

Also, if a bicycle rider does not obey traffic laws, does the rider get a ticket? – Nick, Gary, Indiana Dear Nick: Grandpa is mistaken. Riding a bicycle against the traffic flow is a serious mistake. Bicycle riders must always ride with the flow of traffic, and they must also abide by most all of the same traffic laws as automobile drivers. They must stop at all stop signs and signal lights, signal when turning, and ride their bicycle in a safe manner.

When a bicycle rider is observed violating traffic laws, a ticket is in order. However, most police officers would prefer to explain the violation rather than issue a ticket, so the rider understands the mistake and does not do it again. This is especially true if the rider is a minor.

Bridge players need to exercise self-control, especially when there is a trump suit. The urge to remove those held by the opponents can be overwhelming, but might not be best.

In today’s deal, South is in four spades. What should he do after West leads the heart ace?

East’s two-diamond response was a transfer, showing at least five hearts and zero or more points.

South’s two-spade overcall was dangerous, but his heart length suggested that his partner would be short in that suit and have some spades. West rebid three hearts to indicate four-card support, and North jumped to game because he had a void and expected partner to hold a six-card suit.

After ruffing the lead in the dummy, if South plays three rounds of trumps, he draws them all, but then the defenders can cash three hearts and two clubs for down three. (True, they are unlikely to get it right and will allow declarer to escape for down two, but that is still expensive.)

South must keep the trump and heart suits under control. At trick two, he should run the spade seven. West takes the trick but has no defense. He does best to lead another high heart, in the hope that East has the diamond queen.

Here, though, declarer will ruff in the dummy, play a diamond to his hand, draw trumps, and claim an overtrick.

Watch for this play of losing an inevitable trump trick as soon as possible.
