By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com Two of Illinois’ biggest and most controversial laws passed in 2013 – concealed-carry permits and medicinal marijuana – officially take effect Jan. 1.

However, their impact won’t be seen for months, according to government agencies.

Illinois State Police will accept online applications to carry a concealed handgun starting Jan. 5 and recently announced the acceptance of paper applications beginning July 1.

More than 2,000 registered concealed carry instructors already are listed on the State Police website, spokeswoman Monique Bond said, but the first permits won’t be issued until early April.

“It could be sooner, but we are going to use the full 90 days to give us enough time to make sure we do it right,” Bond said.

In order to obtain a standard five-year concealed-carry permit, Illinois residents must already have a Firearm Owner Identification (FOID) card, pay a $150 fee, submit to a background check and undergo 16 hours of firearm training with a certified instructor.

Applications will be processed by State Police, which will issue or deny the card within 90 days. Denied applications will be reviewed by the governor-appointed Concealed Carry Licensing Board, whose members have

yet to be named.

For similar reasons, medicinal marijuana will not be accessible until well past Jan. 1.

Not only will there be a time lapse to process applications for distribution and cultivation centers, said Illinois Department of Public Health spokesperson Melaney Arnold, but government agencies still are determining the specifics of the law’s implementation.

“I would like to give a time frame, but there are so many moving pieces,” Arnold said.

“We’re working as quickly as we can to get it out.”

The Department of Public Health is in charge of the certification process for doctors and patients, but several other departments and agencies are overseeing different aspects of the law.

But progress is slow, Arnold said. Even key elements of the law, such as how to approve dispensaries and certification requirements, remain undecided.

“It’s not going to happen overnight,” she said. “[The delay] really is because of the enormity of it and making sure we are responsible and do it in a responsible way.”

While still a long way off, the eventual effects of both concealed carry and medicinal marijuana will be significant, according to the laws’ proponents and opponents.

2nd attempt set at paper airplane feat Group will launch aircraft Saturday in hopes of breaking Guinness World Record KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com WEST CHICAGO – After falling short of breaking a Guinness World Record earlier this month, the Fox Valley Composite Squadron will again try to set a new record for the highest paper airplane flight from a high-altitude balloon.

The launch will take place about 11 a.m. Saturday at Kankakee Airport, 1520 S. State Route 115, Kankakee, but members of the public can also view the attempt at Civil Air Patrol’s Illinois Wing Headquarters at DuPage Airport, 32W581 Tower Road, West Chicago. Fox Valley Composite Squadron is the local unit of the Civil Air Patrol.

“Mission Control” at DuPage Airport will have full aircraft-tracking abilities and live radio and video feeds from the Kankakee launch site.

Activities at both locations will begin at 10 a.m.

During the Fox Valley Composite Squadron’s last attempt, the paper aircraft and the weather balloon carrying it into the sky encountered vi-

olent jet stream winds at 51,585 feet, causing the aircraft to collide with the balloon and rupture it in three places.

The project was part of a STEM – science, technology, engineering and math – learning experience for the squadron’s cadet program for children ages 12 to 17.

Firefighter faces battery charges

Elgin Genealogical Society to meet Jan. 7

By CHELSEA McDOUGALL cmcdougall@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A part-time Carpentersville Fire Department firefighter and paramedic has pending misdemeanor battery charges in Kane County stemming from a physical altercation with an unnamed woman.

Jason S. Elders, 39, was arrested about 12:30 a.m. on Sunday in St. Charles Township.

Witnesses told police Elders got on top of the 37-yearold woman and punched her in the face several times,

The incident is alleged to have occurred in the driveway of a home near where Elders had been attending a Christmas party earlier that night.

The woman was transported to Delnor Hospital in Geneva for injuries that were not life threatening.

The battalion chief on duty at the fire department late Monday afternoon said he could not comment on the matter, and both the Carpentersville fire chief and deputy chief were unavailable.

Dr. Eldon Trame, president of the Illinois State Medical Society, said many of the more than 12,000 current and retired doctors in his organization were taking a “wait and see” attitude toward medicinal marijuana and that members were neither encouraged nor discouraged from prescribing it.

“Some physicians are very much in favor of the law and some are very much not in favor of the law,” he said. “But I, at least, will certainly have an open eye and open mind to this.”

GENEVA – The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary has planned boater education classes at Gander Mountain, 2100 S. Randall Road, Geneva.

Flotilla 41-7 9WR of St. Charles will have the classes on Feb. 2, March 1 and March 30.

The class is eight hours in length consisting of classroom instruction, reviews, stories, videos and final exam covering federal, state and local boating laws; required safety equipment; safe boating; basic navigation; boating problems; moving and storage of boats.

Upon completion of the class students are awarded a certificate of completion and wallet card.

The certificate of completion is accepted by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources under the Illinois Boat Registration and Safety Act of 1978, which requires those 18 and younger to carry to operate a personal watercraft or a motorboat on any public body of water in Illinois.

In The Post interview, Snowden said he had succeeded in spawning the debate he sought by bringing the extent of surveillance by the U.S. and British governments to light.

“The mission’s already accomplished,” he said. “I already won. As soon as the journalists were able to work, everything

that I had been trying to do was validated. Because, remember, I didn’t want to change society. I wanted to give society a chance to determine if it should change itself.”

Snowden echoed those sentiments Wednesday, saying he sees an opportunity to “find a better balance, end mass surveillance and remind the government that if it really wants to know how we feel, asking is always cheaper than spying.”

Snowden, a 30-year-old former NSA contractor, has been

condemned by authorities in the United States and Britain for jeopardizing security on both sides of the Atlantic by divulging vital information about programs used to spy on hostile governments and would-be terrorists.

But Snowden’s documents also revealed a vast web of surveillance that targets close allies and sweeps up massive quantities of telephone, Internet and location data about ordinary citizens.

A federal judge ruled this

month that NSA collection methods are probably unconstitutional, describing them as “almost Orwellian.”

In June, federal prosecutors charged Snowden with theft, unauthorized communication of national defense information and “willful communication of classified communications intelligence information to an unauthorized person.”

Snowden, who is living under temporary asylum in Russia, had kept a low profile there until this week.

Snowden’s video was recorded for Britain’s Channel 4, which for two decades has been broadcasting the Alternative Christmas Message – an attimes irreverent counterpoint to the queen’s traditional holiday greeting.

Previous alternative messages have been delivered by then-Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and the cast of “The Simpsons.”

Target faces almost two dozen suits after breach

By CHRIS DOLMETSCH Bloomberg News NEW YORK – Target, the second-largest U.S. discount chain, faces almost two dozen lawsuits filed by customers after a computer security breach exposed data on 40 million debit and credit cards.

Customers have filed complaints seeking group, or class-action, status for their suits in state and federal courts from the company’s home state of Minnesota to California and New York.

Most accuse Target of failing to protect their private information.

The information obtained during the breach “is a treasure trove for identity theft criminals who could use it to gain access to credit card and other private and valuable information about customers,” one of the plaintiffs, Alfonso E. Alonso III of San Francisco, said in a complaint.

Target said Dec. 19 that security for the cards may have been breached between Nov. 27 and Dec. 15 during purchases in stores. While the chain said it had identified and resolved the issue, the compromise occurred during the most important period of the year for retailers, with shoppers

already showing reluctance to spend.

In a statement on Tuesday, Target said it’s unveiling a special website to communicate with customers. The retailer said “limited incidents” of fake communications claiming to be from the company prompted it to set up the dedicated channel for posting information about the breach.

Alonso said in a complaint filed Monday in federal court in Minneapolis that Target didn’t notify consumers its computers’ security was compromised until after the incident was reported in the media. That prevented cus-

tomers from taking the necessary steps to protect against identity theft and fraud, he claimed.

He said he’s a regular Target customer and bought items at the store during the breach period, including a scooter and a helmet he bought for $60.98 on Dec. 2 to donate to a children’s charity.

Since disclosing the breakdown, the Minneapolis-based company has agreed to give some shoppers free credit reporting, assured them they wouldn’t be responsible for fraudulent charges and offered a 10 percent discount on purchases last weekend to regain

their trust.

The company said General Counsel Tim Baer hosted a call for state attorneys general Monday to discuss the breach to “provide them with information about the issue and answer their questions as well as those of their constituents.”

Massachusetts is among states probing the security breakdown.

The company also said it is “actively partnering” with the U.S. Department of Justice and the Secret Service on a continuing forensic and criminal probe. Neither entity is investigating Target, according to the statement.

LONDON – National Security Agency whistleblower Edward Snowden invoked George Orwell and warned of the dangers of unchecked government surveillance Wednesday in a televised Christmas message to the British people that reflected his growing willingness to take a public role in the debate he ignited.

Speaking directly into the camera from Moscow where he took refuge after leaking vast troves of information on NSA spying, Snowden said government surveillance methods far surpass those described in Orwell’s novel “1984.”

“The types of collection in the book – microphones and video cameras, TVs that watch us – are nothing compared to what we have available. We have sensors in our pockets that track us everywhere we go,” he said. “Think about what this means for the privacy of the average person.”

The brief video marked Snowden’s first television appearance since he fled possible prosecution in the United States and arrived in Moscow in June. It came days after The Washington Post published an extensive account of Snowden’s comments during more than 14 hours of interviews.

OPINIONS Sweating the holidays? Just wait With gifts for everybody and their cousins, reunions with “darling” in-laws and rather invasive security searches at airports, the holiday season can become a stressful time. That’s why I always try to think ahead.

Fifty years ahead, that is.

Welcome to the year 2063! Flying cars are still in development, but Apple has started rolling out iDrones – personal unmanned air assault vehicles that deliver precision destruction while jamming out to Abba’s “Greatest Hits.”

Unfortunately, due to global warming, much of the planet’s glaciers have melted and left 90 percent of the surface covered in ocean water.

Besides Al Gore floating around in his eco-friendly yacht (christened I Told You So), humanity’s way of living has remained, for the most part, unchanged. The holidays, however, made some pretty big changes.

Seeing as the North Pole no longer exists, Santa Claus has moved operations to the high elevations of Chile where he has blended in quite well. Sources report that he spends nearly $2,000 every week on spray tanning and extra large speedos.

The northern elves, taking a liking to the warm weather, became expert surfers. Interestingly enough, the local shark population has developed an acute taste for elf meat.

Rudolph and Santa encountered a rough patch in their relationship after Santa traded his reindeer for magical Chilean mountain goats. Rudolph, distraught after the breakup, told reporters: “That ungrateful snot and I are done indefinitely. It’s me or the goats!”

An animal rights group filed a suit against Santa when a police report involving a “jolly red-suited figure” leaked to the press. On

The holiday business sector adapted quickly to the climate change. Coca-Cola experienced an advertising crisis after consumers found the polar bear mascot a bit controversial. Their new mascot, the Coca-Cola Koala, has done well with focus groups and will be taking over the polar bear’s spot.

SkyMall, deciding to take advantage of all the flooded American malls, actually became a sky mall. Now, customers can select from a variety of perfectly useless trinkets on a hovering barge of insane prices.

The Christmas tree sector took a loss when planters found most of their product submerged under 500 feet of water. Thankfully, the tree planters found a solution; serving as a replacement, Christmas coral has shot off SkyMall shelves.

The holiday season of 2063 may seem more busy and stressed than ever, but by preparing 50 years in advance, one can have a relaxed future celebration. Here’s a few stocking stuffers to give to future friends and family: SPF 100 sun tan lotion, “The Beginners Guide to Boating” and toilet paper. Trust me, coral paper is a little rough.

Insufficient mercy THE WASHINGTON POST Last week, President Barack Obama granted clemency to eight people serving long sentences on crack-cocaine convictions.

One person on Obama’s list, Clarence Aaron, was serving three life sentences for participating in a drug deal. Another, Stephanie George, was handed a life sentence for stashing her boyfriend’s drugs. These are just a couple of the nearly 9,000 people convicted under harsh anti-crack policies that Congress established in 1986 and then revised in 2010. By that point, the old standards were widely considered unfair, as well as needlessly expensive.

ognized as unjust,” Obama said last week, “they remain in prison, separated from their families and their communities, at a cost of millions of taxpayer dollars each year.”

Congress and the president agree that the old rules were unwise, yet many others sitting in prison deserve a chance to show that their sentences did not fit their crimes. The fairest and most comprehensive way to give them that chance would come from Congress, which could impose a broad solution and enlist federal judges to apply it. Lawmakers are considering various ways to ease sentences – and the strain on the prison system – by applying new sentencing standards to old convictions. A bill

sponsored by Sens. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., and Mike Lee, R-Utah, would require inmates seeking relaxed punishments to apply to federal judges, who would have leeway to reduce sentences or leave them in place, if appropriate.

But the president has the unrestricted authority to grant clemency to federal convicts. Thousands of people were sentenced under an unjust system the president has condemned.

Why should he stop with granting clemency to only eight of them? If it makes sense for lawmakers to establish a new pathway for relief, it makes sense for the executive branch to apply the same logic with the powers and resources it already has.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Rosati’s to celebrate 50th anniversary

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com Fifty years ago, Rosati’s Pizza found its niche in delivering pizzas when that concept still seemed foreign to many restaurants, said Marla Topliff, president of the restaurant franchise.

In 2014, Rosati’s Pizza will celebrate a half-century since opening its first restaurant in a Chicago suburb in 1964.

But the restaurant’s roots actually go back to 1927, when Ferdinand Rosati traveled to the United States from Naples, Italy.

He opened a restaurant on Taylor Street in Chicago called Rosati’s Restaurant, Topliff said.

She said the restaurant became known for serving flatbread with garlic and olive oil, which is how the pizza restaurant got started.

“He started expanding and started making more and more pizza pies,” Topliff said. “Sam [his son] came into the business with him as the chief cook and bottle washer, and took over when Ferdinand decided to go back to Italy.”

Sam Rosati had 11 children, four of whom opened a Rosati’s Pizza restaurant in 1964, Topliff said. However, all 11 siblings and their spouses worked in the restaurant at some point, she said.

“They had such a passion for the business, and they loved it,” Topliff said. “That passion has been passed down to the kids.”

Back when the restaurant first opened in 1964, Rosati’s was delivering pizzas when few, if any, other restaurants were at the time, Topliff said.

“That’s what we’re famous for,” she said. “It was such a new idea when they started delivering, people had a hard time wrapping their heads around that. We were one of the pio-

neers in that field. Pizza was actually the father of it all.”

Five decades later, almost 200 Rosati’s Pizza restaurants now stand in 14 states. Several Rosati’s Pizza restaurants are located in the Kane County area, including Batavia, St. Charles, Elburn, Aurora and Elgin.

Imran Kanchwala, manager of the Rosati’s Pizza on Kirk Road in St. Charles, said even though the restaurant is a fran-

chise, it still has a mom-and-pop feel.

“My dad’s been with the franchise for 30 years, and my dad’s been in St. Charles for more than 30 years. We’re definitely part of the community,” Kanchwala said. “We’re still family-owned.

My sister works here.”

He said the restaurant often does fundraising and offers discounts to area schools. He said what sets Rosati’s apart from some other restaurant is the fact that the franchise owners and managers actually work on site and see their customers every day.

“We get a lot of customer interaction,” he said. “Plus, it’s a

great product. It’s a great pizza, and that’s really what has gotten us so popular in this area.”

Topliff said the Rosati family’s pizza recipe dates back about 100 years. She said the restaurant’s tomato sauce is blended specifically for them; they only purchase their flour from Winona, Minn.; their cheese all comes from one dairy farm in Wisconsin; and their sausage is made specifically for the restaurant.

“Our pies have great flavor, and our customer service is great,” Topliff said. “People want a pizza place to call their own, and we want it to be Rosati’s.”

The restaurant continues to expand with its latest concept – pizza pub additions that are styled more like a family dine-in with televisions, a bar and family-friendly menu items. Two of those restaurants are located in Montgomery and Yorkville.

Topliff said the franchise will likely be offering several specials throughout the next year, many of which will likely have to do with the number 50.

“Rosati’s is very excited to be hitting this milestone,” Topliff said of the 50th anniversary.

“We’re looking forward to having our children’s children’s children carrying it on another 100 years.”

GENEVA – In 2014, diners will be able to order off the same menu in two different local Mexican eateries.

Bien Trucha’s entire food and drink menu will be available at its neighboring sister restaurant, A Toda Madre.

Bien Trucha specializes in Mexico City street food and has a margarita and tequila bar.

The mimicking menu will take effect in January, but A Toda Madre’s seasonal menu – along with its full bar – will still be available.

“It’s incredible how many times people tell us that they haven’t tried Bien Trucha because of the long waiting list, because they don’t have the time during lunch to wait for a table or simply because we don’t take reservations,” said owner Ricardo Garcia-Rubio in a news release. “ ... Many of them don’t even know the name of the restaurant and just referred to us as the place in Geneva with the long lines.”

In the release, Garcia-Rubio said that both concepts have been successful, but they needed a way to accommodate the people who are discouraged by the long wait at Bien Trucha.

Fine Line’s ‘Molten’ exhibit attracts artist throughout country PLANIT KANE planitkanenews@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The Fine Line Creative Arts Center’s upcoming art exhibition, “Molten,” will be a nationally juried glass and metals show running from Saturday, Jan. 11, through Saturday, Feb. 15.

“Molten” will take place in the Kavanagh Gallery on the Fine Line campus, and will feature wearable, decorative and functional creations formed of glass and/or metals.

Featured artists will include Kansas-based Sara Sally LaGrand, as well as Kim Edwards of West Virginia, Amber Harrison of Michigan and Barry Ferich of Nevada.

All “Molten” works will be available for purchase.

There also will be an artist’s opening reception from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, when attendees will have the opportunity to meet with several of the participating local artists, including Jackie Truty of Oak Lawn, TR Biddle of St. Charles, Ellen and Don Ljung of Geneva, Amanda Schleede

Bellaver will present the Best of Show Award during the opening reception and speak about the jurying of “Molten.” Those who attend the exhibit during the first half of its run can vote for the People’s Choice Award.

Family atmosphere bolsters Geneva

By IAN MATTHEWS editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – In a sport like gymnastics, team accomplishments can be easily overshadowed by individual performances. At high school meets, each athlete represents her school, but it’s individual results – and those only – that determine final team standings.

That makes it all the more impressive what Geneva girls gymnastics coach Kim Hostman has done in her 13-year tenure with the Vikings. With a teamfirst mentality, Geneva celebrat-

ed a fifth-place finish at the 2013 IHSA State meet without an individual athlete scoring among the top finalists.

Hostman took over a program with minimal expectations and morphed it into one that aspires to annually compete and place well at the IHSA State meet. The veteran coach attributes much of the program’s success to doing things together as a team, whether it’s training, working out or just hanging out.

“The girls are very close. We have two seniors, two juniors a sophomore and a freshman, and the freshman [Claire Rose Gins-

berg] happens to be the sister of one of them [Grace] so that’s really nice because she fits right in,” Hostman said. “They are a really close, dynamic group and they’re really focused on what our goals are.”

The Vikings’ family atmosphere has had added meaning the last couple of years with the Ginsbergs – junior Grace, freshman Claire and recently graduated Jenna – adding to the closeknit environment. The current Ginsberg tandem has helped Geneva light up the scoreboard as the Vikings recently won the prestigious Red Devil Invite

along with taking first at Glenbard East.

At the Red Devil Invite, Claire Ginsburg won the vault (9.6), beam (9.45) and floor (9.4) while taking second (9.0) to Geneva’s Dominique Brognia (9.150) in the bars to earn the all around win with a 37.50. Brognia’s 35.775 was good for second overall as Geneva won the overall Invite title with a 141.925, eclipsing the 140.0 goal that Hostman hoped for.

“We’re definitely pushing each other each week and at each meet; we started off really well, which is a good thing and

our scores are getting higher and higher with each meet,” Brognia said. “The team is really close; outside of practice we’ll have team bonding things like sleepovers or we’ll go out to get frozen yogurt as a team to get closer.”

Brognia was close with the eldest Ginsberg sister, Jenna, who is now a track athlete at Saint Louis University. The wisdom imparted by Jenna along with 2013 graduate and team captain Ashley Puff has helped Brognia lead the talented Vikings.

Witkowski thriving on the pitch for NIU A soccer field is often called a pitch, but for Cody Witkowski of Batavia, a better word might be sanctuary.

“I just love every second of playing soccer,” Witkowski said. “To me, it’s like an escape. You can be having a bad day and you go over the touchline and you can forget about things.”

Witkowski, a freshman at Northern Illinois, had a lot of good days this season on the pitch for the Huskies. He played in all 18 matches, starting 10, and displayed a great deal of versatility. Witkowski said he appeared at five or six different positions across the backline and in midfield.

“I’m comfortable playing anywhere,” he said. “My favorite position is probably center back.”

While he prefers to work at stopping the other team from scoring, Witkowski can step into the attack, as well.

He put three shots on goal in an early-season match against Evansville and scored on one of them. He also picked up an assist in the early going.

“It was great to start off with some points,” Witkowski said.

“We didn’t have the greatest record, but I played in every

ON CAMPUS Dennis D. Jacobs game, so I was happy with it.”

The Huskies finished 4-13-1 overall, including a 0-5-1 mark in the Mid-American Conference. Witkowski said he expects major improvement from the team next season.

Witkowski is working to improve his own game even over Christmas break. Last week, he spent several days working out with other college players, and starting Jan. 6 he’ll take part in several training sessions with the Chicago Fire’s Premier Development League (PDL) team. Witkowski played for the Chicago Fire Academy club team and the MSL team holds his professional rights for the time being.

“I’m looking forward to PDL over the summer, just to get back playing with them,” he says. “I’m young enough I can play with the Super 20s, but I want to play with the PDL team. It’s like the next step toward professional soccer, so I hope to have a great season and get my name out there with the professional coaches.”

Witkowski said he started playing soccer around the age of 6. He also played basketball and baseball in his early years, but it didn’t take him long to decide to focus on soccer.

“I probably realized that in middle school, like when all the kids are playing basketball or cutting down to one sport.”

He spent some time playing for the Fox Valley Strikers and the Eclipse Select Soccer Club before joining the Chicago Fire Academy in high school.

What attracted him to the Fire Academy?

“It’s the environment, like being around the professional players,” Witkowski said. “I got an opportunity to play in South Carolina with the [Fire] reserve team.”

At Batavia High School, Witkowski was a three-time all-conference selection in the Upstate Eight Conference and he earned all-state recognition his senior year. His older brother, Tyler, was a goalkeeper for the Bulldogs.

“I played with him for two years,“ Cody said. “That was a lot of fun.”

The younger Witkowski received scholarship offers from Louisville, St. Louis, and Illinois-Chicago, but chose to at-

tend college in nearby DeKalb.

“Northern is just the best fit for me,” he said. “It’s 30 minutes from my home. It’s perfect. I’m very happy with the decision I made.”

Witkowski said he also liked the coaching staff and facilities and had played with some of the players on the team, like Charlie Oliver, a sophomore from Crystal Lake.

When he has free time, Witkowski said he enjoys typical teenager activities like hanging out with friends and watching TV. “I’m a big advocate of watching sports,” he said, noting that in addition to soccer matches, he enjoys NBA and NFL telecasts.

TV can provide a welcome respite from the worries of the day, but for Witkowski, it’s primarily a means of killing time until he can return to his real sanctuary – the soccer field.

Hostman’s goal setting for each meet has given the Vikings a yardstick to try and hit, and they’ve done so successfully at every turn.

“We kind of hit the standards for this season at that meet, so, hopefully, we can eventually do better than that. It’s a good feeling when you can win a meet

[individually] but nothing feels as good as winning as a team.”

While sleepovers and frozen yogurt undoubtedly bring a team closer, it’s the work the team puts in during practice and events that matters most.

Hostman puts an enormous

emphasis throughout the year on physical conditioning, with a lot of time spent at practice working on cardio, stretching, abs and overall strength.

Hostman believes the focus on training throughout the grueling year will help when it matters most – the postseason.

“In the summer we have a camp we do and then we get back at it in the fall. During season, we work out everyday from 3-6 p.m.; we do cardio and stretch together and do a lot of conditioning to keep their bodies strong,” Hostman said. “We do a lot of running and weightlifting – and they strive to get better in it, and it shows in the girls. If we can keep them healthy, that’s key to going deep into the postseason.”

If Geneva continues eclipsing Hostman’s goals, the Vikings could achieve the ultimate team goal – winning state.

No matter what happens, the Vikings will do it as a family.

“I feel like we’re getting more aggressive and more physical, which is what we’ve been stressing,” North Stars coach Ben Hummel said, “and I feel like we took a step forward as far as being more physical with guys.”

While North again is lacking numbers at the upper weights, the top half of its lineup made the most hay against the Bulldogs.

Here’s his take on just how conditioning for the two sports differs: “It’s not comparable to wrestling. No. Nope. Nope.

It’s not,” McKeehan said.

“Football just doesn’t even come close to comparing.

Football’s fun and all, but it’s like wrestling’s a whole new level of conditioning.”

There’s often lots of downtime at wrestling tournaments, even when the itinerary doesn’t call for rooting for another teammate between bouts.

That’s liable to change at Dvorak, which many coaches compare to a state tournament prelude that combines top talent from classes 1A, 2A and 3A.

Here’s hoping a handful of Saints and Cadets lock horns during the weekend. Several of them likely will be vying for 3A titles during the real state tournament in February.

A 10-1 start in duals fueled by several standout individual performances suggests St. Charles East’s aspirations for a special season aren’t farfetched.

This weekend, the Saints will do themselves one better by participating in the traditionally daunting Dvorak Tournament at Machesney Park Harlem. It’s an investment for the present and the future.

Typically entrants in Palatine’s Berman tournament – no slouch of an event itself – during this time of year, the Saints are traveling west in part thanks to coach Jason Potter’s connections. A former collegiate teammate who coaches at Harlem helped facilitate communication with Huskies athletic officials.

Excitement swirled as soon as East joined the field.

“Every one of your matches, there’s going to be a state series feel to it,” Potter said.

“There’s no weight class at that tournament that doesn’t have at least five or six elite kids.”

East returned 10 wrestlers who had at least 10 matches of experience last season. At Dvorak, whose field includes state power Marmion, each Saint is sure to receive several tests.

The Saints will have had eight days off between a dual victory against Metea Valley and Friday’s opening tournament bouts.

“Get rid of all of our bangs and bruises going into this thing and see what we do,” Potter said.

Will it be Rodgers or Flynn behind center?

This week, we have two matchups to preview: The Bears versus the Packers with Aaron Rodgers at quarterback, and the Bears versus the Pack with Matt Flynn behind the wheel.

My best guess is it will be Flynn irrespective of what’s at stake.

Reports from late last week are that Rodgers never was close to being medically cleared, so it’s hard to imagine he will make that much progress for the Bears game. The only thing that’s certain is we won’t know until late in the week, if before Sunday at all.

With Rodgers, you’re talking about the best quarterback in the game, and one of the best ever. The Packers are capable of beating you with the pass

or the run, and Jordy Nelson, James Jones, Jarrett Boykin and, perhaps, even Aaron Quarless all become weapons you have to scheme for.

If it’s Flynn at quarterback, the Bears will focus their attention on stopping Eddie Lacy, James Starks and Nelson, and then trust individual defenders to make plays against the rest while the defense tries to force Flynn to make a play to beat them.

Don’t think for a minute that Flynn can’t beat you. He’s very comfortable in Mike McCarthy’s offense and just fine reading defenses, going through his progressions and knowing when to quit on a play to fight another day.

But he has nowhere near the cannon Rodgers does nor can he command that kind of accuracy. Keep Flynn in third-and-long, and he’s unlikely to beat you.

The Packers are top five or top 10 in almost every offensive category, regardless of the quarterback, except avoiding interceptions and allowing

quarterback sacks. There, it makes a difference who’s under center.

Rodgers has thrown four interceptions and has been sacked 18 times in 251 attempts. Flynn, Scott Tolzein and Seneca Wallace have thrown 10 interceptions and have been sacked 24 times in 280 attempts. Flynn has seven of those picks and 17 sacks in 166 attempts.

Regardless of which quarterback it is, the story of this game for the Bears’ defense figures to be their 32nd-ranked run defense versus Lacy and Starks.

With Flynn at quarterback, the Bears will pack seven, eight or even nine in the box on most plays. Lacy is dynamic at getting to the second level, but not a huge threat to outrun anyone in the secondary or go all the way.

Defensively, the Packers have been a huge disappointment this year and are more likely to be the reason whether the Bears win the NFC North than Rodgers’ injury. After their best

outing of the year versus Atlanta in Lambeau three weeks ago, Dallas and Pittsburgh have scorched them the past two weeks. They had no answers for the Steelers’ Le’Veon Bell last week, and Matt Forte should have a big day.

After a fast start to the season, B.J. Raji and Ryan Pickett have been ineffective up front, and the loss of Johnny Jolly for the season with a neck injury has been huge as he was playing the best football of his career.

Clay Matthews and Nick Perry are back from injury at the outside linebacker spots, but neither is rushing the quarterback the way they are capable, and A.J. Hawk and Brad Jones inside are not as stout as they need to be against the run.

Tramon Williams and Sam Shields have been inconsistent, at best, on the corners, making the occasional big play but struggling in coverage often.

That matchup with Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery is potentially another big edge for the Bears.

In a perfect world, you have been crowned as your league’s fantasy football champion.

More likely, however, it’s wait until next year.

In either event, I hope you had fun playing fantasy football this year. I also hope that this column, perhaps, provided you some not-terrible advice, at least once in a while.

If nothing else, there were quite a few fantasy surprises in 2013. Ray Rice was a consensus first-rounder, as was CJ Spiller. No one expected Peyton Manning to be a bum, but I don’t recall much talk about him shattering the single-season touchdown passes record, either. It was a wild season.

In a palatial mansion on Long Island, a lone, welldressed millionaire played in an all-out performance by Leonardo DiCaprio, presides virtually unseen over a bacchanal of benumbed excess, the avatar of an age of heedless self-indulgence and greed.

Ah, so the 3-D version of “The Great Gatsby” is being re-released? Not quite.

In “The Wolf of Wall Street,” Martin Scorsese’s big, bravura, maddeningly uneven indictment of the extreme financial depredations that characterized the 1990s, DiCaprio plays Jordan Belfort, a real-life swindler and penny-stock con man who made more than $100 million off of unwitting investors.

The Queens-born Belfort may embody the same ambition and shadowy ruthlessness as F. Scott Fitzgerald’s self-made anti-hero, but he has none of his subtlety or allegorical heft. There’s no enigmatic green light goading Belfort on in “The Wolf of Wall Street,” other than the unseen internal one telling him to go, go, go and get more, more, more.

More, in this case, doesn’t just mean money – although in one of Belfort’s several speeches to his employees, delivered in a style suggesting Henry V combined with a touch of Catskills tummler – he suggests that whatever problems they may have, they should solve them by getting rich.

As “The Wolf of Wall Street” makes clear from its first aggressive, whipsawing moments, Belfort is the ultimate empty vessel, a man who can never get enough of anything, whether it’s sex or drugs or validation from the audience he addresses by way of near-constant narration,

Belfort is such a thoroughly loathsome character that it makes “The Wolf of Wall Street” difficult to process as art, much less entertainment. There’s no doubt that Scorsese – working with screenwriter Terence Winter, cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto and longtime editor Thelma Schoonmaker – is still working at the top of his game, his sheer technical chops and exuberant commitment exerting an insistent, sleeve-tugging pull. Juxtaposing blues and Afro-pop riffs with shiny nouveau-riche settings and at least two astonishing set pieces, Scorsese evinces the same canny eye and ear that make his movies compulsively watchable, regardless of who or what they’re about.

But in “The Wolf of Wall Street,” the film’s nominal subjects – Belfort’s ignominious rise (did he ever really fall?) and the gluttonous underbelly of capitalism he represents – aren’t particularly interesting, or new. When

Belfort joins with his future partner Donnie Azoff (Jonah Hill), when he marries his stunning second wife Naomi (the angel-faced, fiery-eyed Margot Robbie), when he finally comes under the scrutiny of Patrick Denham (Kyle Chandler) an even-keel FBI agent, none of those relationships ever manages to be fully realized. Like DiCaprio’s, they’re superb, even brave performances in search of somewhere to go, go, go.

Instead, “The Wolf of Wall Street” remains one-note even at is most outre, an episodic portrait of rapaciousness in which decadence escalates into debauchery escalates into depravity – but, miraculously, not death.

“The Wolf of Wall Street” doesn’t implicate the audience in Belfort’s desires, the way “Goodfellas” seduced viewers with its intimate, textured vignettes of Henry Hill’s life in the mafia. Belfort is too scuzzy, the material culture he inhabits too bland and superficial, to create that kind of vicarious sympathy.

But nor does the film ever empower its saner voices to give Belfort an adequate

dramatic foil.

That meaningful, eloquent moment notwithstanding, “The Wolf of Wall Street” maintains an oddly equivocating ethical stance throughout its vertiginous slide through the muck. On one hand, the filmmakers suggest that Belfort’s most dehumanizing behavior is what undergirds every Wall Street firm, that behind those stentorian ads and Forbes profiles are just a bunch of tacky, boiler-room bros with their snouts in the trough.

But in the final analysis, they pull their punches on Belfort – who actually appears in the final scene of the movie, wielding, what else, a microphone (reportedly, he has yet to pay up fully on the $110 million he owes in restitution to his victims).

In “Goodfellas,” which still reigns supreme as Scorsese’s finest plunge into the low life, the film ends on that teasingly ambiguous shot of Ray Liotta’s Mona Lisa smile.

In “The Wolf of Wall Street,” Scorsese turns his gaze on the audience itself, suggesting that it’s our own avarice – or at least fatal naivete – that creates monsters like Belfort.

OK, but ... really?

Belfort and his more wellheeled but equally crooked colleagues at white-shoe firms cooked up what may be the largest transfer of wealth in human history.

And it’s schmoes like us that “The Wolf of Wall Street” holds accountable? That laughing sound you hear just out of eye-shot may well be Belfort, having the last howl.

• “The Wolf of Wall Street” received two-and-a-half stars out of four. The film is rated R, containing sequences of strong sexual content, graphic nudity, drug use and profanity throughout and some violence. It runs 179 minutes.

Rest, ice and compression will help heal ‘tennis elbow’ Dear Doctor K: I’ve been playing tennis for years, but lately I’ve been sidelined by elbow pain.

What can I do?

Dear Reader: Elbow pain is the bane of tennis players. It has kept me off the courts for several months at a time. Let’s talk about how to get you back on the court – and prevent a repeat injury.

Elbow pain associated with racquet sports is a form of tendonitis called epicondylitis. It affects anchor points on either side of the elbow joint (the epicondyles). Hold your arm out straight, with the palm up. Then, starting at the wrist of your outstretched arm, run your thumb up the inner side of the arm and your middle finger up the outer side. When you get to the elbow, you’ll feel two hard bumps on either side of it. Those are the epicondyles.

Muscles in the forearm that flex the wrist attach to the epicondyles with a fibrous tendon. Over time, repeating the same body motion damages the tendon. Hitting a tennis ball requires a firm grip on the racquet, and when you strike the ball the tendon tugs at the epicondyles. That’s particularly true of the one on the outer side of your elbow when you hold the

When trouble develops in the tendon that attaches on the outer side of the elbow, it’s called lateral epicondylitis. It’s more commonly known as “tennis elbow.” (I’ve put an illustration on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

Right after injury, focus on relieving pain and inflammation and resting the affected area: • Rest: Stop playing for a few weeks or months to give the tendon time to heal.

• Ice: Ice the joint for up to 20 minutes several times a day to combat inflammation.

• Compression: A counterforce brace wraps snugly around the forearm, reducing tension on the tendon. It can help relieve symptoms.

• Anti-inflammatory medications: These drugs (such as ibuprofen and naproxen) can help relieve pain and inflammation.

• Corticosteroid injection: Your doctor may consider a limited number of corticosteroid injections to provide symptom relief.

In my experience, these measures almost always do the trick, but it takes time to heal. If you have severe, unrelenting pain that does not respond to the above treatments, you and your doctor may consider: • Platelet-rich plasma therapy (PRPT): Platelets and other substances from your own blood are injected into the injury site.

PRPT may help stimulate a healing response in the damaged tissues, although this treatment is unproven and controversial.

• Surgery removes damaged, non-healing tissues and may stimulate healing.

Once you’re back on the court, do the following to prevent further injury: • After you play, ice your elbow, even if it doesn’t hurt.

• Make sure the size, weight and grip of your racquet are right for you.

• Warm up before playing.

Stretch, put your joints through their full range of motion and increase activity gradually.

Why is it that men drink the beer and get drunk and not the women? Why do men drink more than women? Is it a macho thing? – Nameless, McComb, Miss.

Dear Nameless: Your family is from the old school, at least in terms of drinking. There was a time when beer was considered a macho drink and it was crude for a woman to be seen with a bottle in her hand. Polite society could accept a man who was drunk, but would have been aghast at the idea of an inebriated female.

For better or for worse, the women’s movement helped alter these images. Now women can do what they want, including indulge in the same vices that men enjoy.

Beer is no longer strictly macho. Beer companies are well aware that many women now like to join the men in having a cold one, so a portion of their advertising budget is aimed specifically at females.

One problem with this is that alcohol affects men differently than it does women, who tend to get drunk quicker because women have more body fat.

This means a woman’s body has a lesser ability to dilute the alcohol because it is absorbed in the fat.

The women in your family are smart to avoid competing with the men in beer chugging.

3. Disruption within the family; divorce or threat of divorce, death or serious illness within the family.

4. Wage earner’s loss of a job.

5. Rejection, abandonment or threat of abandonment by parents.

6. Peer pressure (that is, joining a friend who has decided to run away from home.)

The best remedy for removing the threat of running away is open and honest communication between parent and teen, and lots of kind words, hugs and love.

At the bridge table, you hope that everything you need to count accurately can be. In today’s deal, it is East who needs to count, aided and abetted by West.

South is in four hearts.

West leads his fourth-highest club. How should East plan the defense?

South had a minimum twoheart response. He planned to rebid three hearts to invite game, but when North supported hearts, this increased the value of South’s hand, so he bid game.

Why did West lead a club instead of a diamond? Because it was his stronger suit – and because I peeked at the full deal and saw that a diamond lead would kill the defense!

East should realize that almost certainly his side has to take either three clubs and one diamond or two clubs and two diamonds – but which?

First, East must find out whether South started with two clubs or three. East wins the first trick with his club king and cashes the club ace. Here, West follows with his two, showing that he began with five clubs.

Now East must try for two diamond tricks – how?

If West has the diamond king, it does not matter; but in case South has the king and West the queen, East must shift to a low diamond. Now the only question is: Will South guess correctly?

Note that if West had started with only four clubs, his second card would have been higher than the three. Then East would have cashed the diamond ace before leading a third club.

In order to prevent returning home to a household emergency, there are several simple tasks that should be completed before traveling during winter.

• Turn off the main water supply. The main water supply controls all of the water in the house and is one of the best protections against needing to repair water damage and prevent flooding.

• Winterize the drainage systems. Drain the water out of the toilet and add non toxic antifreeze. Also, pour one-half cup of anti- freeze down the bathroom sink and the bath tub.

• Test the sump pump. In case there is an emergency, make sure the sump pump is working before leaving town. To test the sump pump, fill it with water and wait for the float to rise to the top. Once the float rises, the sump pump should start running.

• Leave the thermostat turned on. Make sure the thermostat is set no lower than 60 degrees F. This can prevent pipes from freezing.

• Unplug the electronics. Before leaving, unplug all of the electronics, including the television, computers, stereos, lamps and any additional item plugged directly into the wall.

Gardener’s Journal: Winter’s weeping trees

upright form, spreading their branches upward and outward to capture sunlight. So, in some respects weeping trees are “freaks” of nature because their branches grow downward.

Weeping trees are unusual in nature, but so many species offer weeping cultivars to add variety to the “ordinary.” You’ll see that most weeping cultivars carry the word “Pendula” in their botanical (Latin) names or “Weeping ...” as their cultivar (English) name.

We’re all familiar with the Weeping Willow (Salix), so dominant where it appears in the landscape; few trees rival its grace and form. Other larger-growing deciduous types are Weeping Beech (Fagus), Weeping Katsura (Cercidiphyllum) and Weeping Cherry (Prunus).

Large weeping evergreens include Weeping White Pine (Pinus), Weeping Alaskan Cedar (Chamaecyparis) and Weeping Spruces (Picea) and Fir (Abies).

All of these need ample space to grow, enabling their form and stature to be properly

Winter is upon us and nature’s gift to us is now on display. Her decorative autumn giftwrap of colorful foliage has fallen away, revealing for our seasonal enjoyment, her present to us – the opportunity to view the shapes of her trees unimpeded by their summer foliage.

Now leafless, the trees of the winter garden appeal in new and inspiring ways.

Few shapes in the landscape are more engaging than a weeping tree; appearing so different from what we consider a “normal” shape, they tend to draw our eye.

For the larger-growing types, the form of their profile against the sky, starkly evident in winter, creates a great focal point in the garden. Others are smaller and slower-growing. Some present an undulating effect, some tend to spread broadly, others hug the ground to follow contours like a groundcover.

With no foliage to disrupt the view, winter is the best time to appreciate variability of form in deciduous trees. appreciated as they mature.

And there are lots of other choices, many of which are more refined in growth, well suited even to smaller gardens. Some of my favorite deciduous types for more limited spaces are the Weeping Japanese Maples (Acer), Weeping Redbuds (Cercis),

Weeping Dogwoods (Cornus), Weeping Larch (Larix) and Weeping Hornbeam (Carpinus). Some smaller types like Weeping Peashrub (Caragana) and Weeping Dwarf Willows (Salix) are available grafted on top of upright stems to make an attractive patio tree in a container or intimate garden.

Even though they can become large after years of growing, the coniferous Weeping Hemlock (Tsuga) and Weeping Atlas Cedar (Cedrus) are readily manageable trees to be a part of most any garden.

With no foliage to disrupt our view of their shapes, winter is the best time to appreciate the variability of form in the deciduous trees in your yard and surrounding landscapes. And even though they retain their foliage all year, the conifers and evergreens are also striking now, standing in contrast to surrounding bare trunks and stems of dormant trees. Winter is certainly a time of rest. But it’s also a season to appreciate all this exceptional beauty of forms that nature offers us.
