‘Real giver’ named 2014 Batavia Citizen of the Year “It was brought up a lot about how he is the father of the Rotary Club in Batavia.”

Von Lunen, 68, will receive the award at the Batavia Chamber of Commerce’s annual recognition event in January.

He said he was “floored” when he got the news, which he wasn’t expecting. In fact, he said, when Deitchman made an announcement for last-minute nominations at a Rotary meeting, he began thinking of those he felt were deserving of the recognition.

“It’s a great honor to be recognized by your peers,” he said.

A committee of previous Citizen of the Year recipients selected Von Lunen for the award, which recognizes extraordinary contributions to the community over the course of the recipient’s life-

time.

Batavia Public Library Director George Scheetz said he was inspired to nominate Von Lunen because he doesn’t seek the limelight, and a lot of people likely don’t realize how much he’s done for the community.

Scheetz said he has come to greatly admire Von Lunen in the 10 years he has known him through Rotary and the library, where Von Lunen has served as trustee for nearly eight years.

Von Lunen exemplifies the Rotary’s motto “service above self,” Scheetz said, describing him as selfless and “a real giver.”

According to a news release, Von Lunen’s leadership in fundraising with the Rotary Club has helped support numerous local projects and initiatives. The list

includes the Peg Bond Center pavilion, Bulldogs Unleashed, the Batavia Riverwalk boardwalk and gazebo, Batavia High School’s Interact Club and an annual scholarship program for graduating seniors at the school.

His community involvement also has included work with Hesed House, bell ringing for The Salvation Army, serving as an usher at Holy Cross Catholic Church, volunteering at Lazarus House and, among acts, helping neighbors clear their driveways in the winter and remove broken tree branches after a storm, according to the release.

Deitchman said Von Lunen’s volunteer efforts are genuine.

“All of this is given straight from his heart,” she said.

Rosary entrance exam set for Jan. 10

Holly Deitchman, executive director of the Batavia Chamber of Commerce, said the selection committee was unanimous when J. Thomas choosing J. Von Lunen Thomas Von Lunen for the honor.

“Tom really stood out from the crowd,” she said, noting there were seven nominees, three of whom had previously been nominated.

Team surprises Geneva girl with adaptive bike

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A group of kids this week saw the impact they can make with a lemonade stand and water bottles.

Members of the Multisport Madness Triathlon Team raised $4,010 this year by selling water bottles, lemonade and cookies, and then they reached out to Tammy Simmons of Project Mobility to make sure their fundraising would help a child get a bike, Simmons said.

“They see what we do here all the time,” said Simmons, who also is affiliated with the Bike Rack, where the team trains.

Project Mobility is a St. Charles-based nonprofit that aims to provide adaptive bikes to disabled children and adults.

Although individuals have donated to Project Mobility, Simmons and her brother, Project Mobility Executive Director Hal Honeyman, said such a team effort was a first.

“They thought beyond themselves and made a difference in someone’s life,” Honeyman said.

Simmons said she used her contacts to find a Geneva girl in need – 6-year-old Kayla Juan, who was diagnosed with a brain tumor in June 2013. Kayla and her family came to the Bike Rack on Monday night on the pretense that the girl needed to be fitted for equipment for school, Simmons said.

Instead, she said, Multisport Madness Triathlon Team members and others surprised Kayla with an adaptive bike.

“Her reaction was pure joy,” Honeyman said, adding her parents were “totally blindsided.”

Two file as write-in candidates in Campton Hills races

CAMPTON HILLS – Four candidates whose spring election petitions were challenged will have to wait until next year to find out whether they’ll be on the ballot.

The Campton Hills Electoral Board on Tuesday decided to begin deliberations on Jan. 2 regarding village President Patsy Smith’s objections to the four candidacies.

This is the second time the electoral board has recessed its meeting, which was first called to order on Dec. 9.

The three-member board on Tuesday did hear arguments on a motion to dismiss the objections, testimony from Interim Village Clerk John Strauss and proposed findings of fact from village attorney Bill Braithwaite.

As the village attorney, Braithwaite automatically is designated as the electoral board’s attorney.

Electoral board member Jim Kopec said he wanted a chance to digest the presented findings and board Chairman Mike Millette said he wasn’t comfortable starting deliberations on Tuesday.

“I don’t think a rushed decision is a good decision for anybody,” Millette said.

CAMPTON HILLS – Two Campton Hills residents on Wednesday filed to run as write-in candidates in the spring election, interim village clerk John Strauss said.

As of 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nicholas G. Girka filed to run for village clerk, and Steven Galloway filed to run as a trustee, Strauss said.

There were no regular candidate submissions between Dec. 15 and 22 in Campton Hills, Strauss said. Three candidates who filed on Nov. 24 to run for trustee seats and one who filed to run for village president were challenged by village President Patsy Smith.

The Campton Hills Village Board plan to deliberate on Jan. 2 about the objections.

A key argument in the challenge is whether the village will have a primary election, something that is asserted by the challenged candidates but not Smith.

Smith, who did not file to run for re-election by the Dec. 22 deadline, declined to comment Tuesday on whether she will run as a write-in candidate.

Consensus on the exact deadline for write-in candidates in a primary was unclear after Tuesday’s Campton Hills Electoral Board meeting, but Matthew Welch, the candidates’ attorney at the meeting, said the deadline for write-in candidates in a primary was Wednesday.

In an effort to isolate the causes of eye strain, which is one of several major symptoms of “dry eye” disease, researchers analyzed the tear fluid of office workers who spend long periods of time peering at computer screens. They found that those who spent the most time looking at their monitors had the least amount of the protein (known as MUC5AC) that is secreted by cells in the upper eyelid to create the mucus layer in tears (“tear film”) that keeps the eye moist. In fact, the workers who spent the most time watching their computer screens had MUC5AC levels that approached the levels seen with individuals diagnosed with dry eye. Treatment with artificial tears can help.

P.S. Because they tend to blink less often than usual and open their eyes wider, people in front of computer screens are likely to be more susceptible to ocular fatigue and dry eye symptoms.

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – When her friend’s baby developed a genetic liver disorder, Holly Schlesser of St. Charles said she did not hesitate to become a living donor to save the child’s life.

Others stepped up, but none were a proper match. Schlesser, who is the same blood type as the baby, turned out to be the best match.

So, during this season of giving, Tanya and Erik Casey of South Elgin received an unquantifiable gift from Schlesser, a 36-year-old mother of three who donated a lobe of her liver for transplant to their then 9-month-old baby, Madison.

“In essence, my daughter has a chance at a life because of Holly,” Tanya Casey said. “It is something we can never repay.”

But Schlesser insisted it was she who received the larger gift.

“I get to see Madison live the rest of her life and know I played a part in it,” Schlesser said. “I want to see her take her first steps … . I want to watch her get married and start a family … . Yes, it was uncomfortable to have major surgery, but I gave a little girl her life. What is being uncomfortable from a surgery? Nothing.”

Schlesser said she did what anyone would do.

“I believe in my heart that anyone put in this situation would do the same thing,” Schlesser said. “I don’t believe anyone qualified to donate would not donate.”

Her husband, Jay, gives her credit.

“My wife is a true inspiration as to the person I would like to be,” he said. “And I could not be more proud of her for doing this.”

In 2013, 28,953 people received organ transplants, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Each day, an average of 79 people receive organ transplants, but about 18 people die each day waiting for transplants because of the shortage of donated organs.

Dr. Talia Baker, director of Northwestern Memorial Hospital’s living donor liver transplant program and one of the surgeons involved in Madison’s transplant, praised Schlesser’s decision to donate a portion of her liver.

“Organ donation is the greatest gift anyone can give another person,” Baker said. “It really is the gift of life. I am always in awe of the men and women that step forward to save someone else’s life, and Holly’s liver donation is a perfect example of this beautiful gift.”

seys were brought together by their sons four years ago, when Trenton Schlesser and Michael Casey became best friends at the Potawatomi preschool in St. Charles when they were both 2, Holly Schlesser said.

“They became instant buddies,” she said.

The families discovered they had a lot in common: Erik Casey and Jay Schlesser are both firefighters, and Tanya Casey and Holly Schlesser are both teachers, although both are staying at home for now.

The Schlessers were joyful for their friends, when twins Matthew and Madison Casey were born Jan. 28.

But Madison’s color was dark and after some testing, alpha 1 antitrypsin deficiency liver disease was confirmed, Holly Schlesser said.

That type of genetic liver disorder usually presents itself when a person is age 20 to 50, according to the Genetics Home

Reference of the National Institutes of Health. But 10 percent will develop liver failure as infants, as Madison did.

In the simplest terms, Erik Casey said, the disorder causes the liver to make the antitrypsin protein in the wrong shape.

The protein then becomes trapped in the liver, causing problems, including liver failure.

“The protein is supposed to escape the liver and make its way to the lungs,” Erik Casey said. “It protects the lungs and liver from damage from everyday use.”

The disease was identified in 1974 by Swedish doctor Carl-Bertil Laurell, according to the National Institutes of Health.

In the past, those born with the disorder often developed asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease but didn’t realize the true source of their illness, Erik Casey said. The

disease is now more understood.

“Most people do not have a severely affected liver like my daughter.” Erik Casey said.

When Madison became ill at 6 months old with a distended belly, the Caseys took her to Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago where tests confirmed that her liver was failing.

The search for a donor began immediately.

“My brother was tested, but his liver was slightly too big and had too many veins for a match,” Tanya Casey said.

“Some teachers I work with said, ‘OK, give us the paperwork.’ ” Doctors did not want the girl’s parents as donors – except as a last resort – because they carried the genetic disease, Tanya Casey said.

Schlesser said.

“It went very fast. She was very, very yellow and distended like she swallowed a soccer ball,” Holly Schlesser said.

“Even her eyes were yellow.”

Then Holly Schlesser found out she was the best match.

“They checked my liver enzymes and did an MRI of my blood vessels,” Holly Schlesser said. “And a CT scan to make sure that my artery was branching and a biopsy to see if I had any fat in my liver.”

It took two weeks for all the tests and results, Holly Schlesser said.

“My last test was on a Wednesday,” Holly Schlesser said. “On Thursday, they said, ‘You’re a match.’ And surgery was scheduled for Monday, Nov. 10.”

••• Holly Schlesser was at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Madison was at Lurie, with the two hospitals connected by an underground tunnel.

“There was a huge transplant team for each surgery,” Holly Schlesser said. “My team removed half to ⅔ of the left segment of my liver, about 30 percent. Then two of my doctors, who were also on her team, walked it through the tunnel and started her surgery.”

Holly Schlesser’s surgery took three hours and Madison’s took about eight hours.

“My liver will regenerate about 90 percent in about a month, taking another two months to grow that last 10 percent,” Holly Schlesser said. “In theory, Madison is cured. My liver will make proteins the way it’s supposed to.”

Holly Schlesser said she will train for a marathon once her surgery is totally healed.

In fact, she ran a 15K the day before the surgery.

“The ramifications for my life will be an increased risk of hernia because of the scar from my sternum to the rib just above my belly button – but the rest should be fine,” Holly Schlesser said.

Madison came home from the hospital last Thursday, well in time for Christmas. She will have to take anti-rejection medication the rest of her life, her parents said.

••• The logistics of the transplant surgeries and after-care required that both husbands be off work, Holly Schlesser said, so their respective departments either had co-workers donate their days off or traded them.

In addition to Trenton Schlesser, that family also has a daughter, Ainsley, 4 and another son, Declan, 2. During her six weeks of recovery, Holly Schlesser could not lift more than 10 pounds, so she needed her husband home to care for her, as well as for their children.

Though insurance covers most of the surgeries, the Caseys still face some formidable expenses, Holly Schlesser said.

Those include keeping health insurance coverage while Tanya Casey is off of work, loss of wages, the cost of traveling back and forth to the hospital and some prescriptions that are not fully covered, she said.

The Caseys have fundraising pages on social media, and friends have set up a fundraiser for next year. Madhouse for Madison will be from 5:30 to 10 p.m. Jan. 16, at Old Crow Smokehouse, 1100 American Lane, Schaumburg. Tickets are $20 at the door, and the event will feature food and bands, a 50/50 raffle, a silent auction and signed Blackhawks memorabilia.

Although she always supported organ donation, Holly Schlesser said she was oblivious to what was involved.

“There’s all these kids waiting for hearts and livers,” Holly Schlesser said. “You don’t realize how much impact a donation can make until you see somebody going through that. When we visited Madison at Ronald McDonald House, I talked to a mom whose son was in the hospital for a year waiting for a heart. He’s 7. You don’t realize you can save a life.”

The candidates filed in November because it was their understanding that all nonpartisan candidates must file nominating papers by that time for the February consolidated primary election, Attorney Matthew Welch wrote in his motions to strike and dismiss Smith’s objections. “[Specific sections of the Illinois Municipal Code] govern whether a primary actually must be held, or whether the candidates merely advance to the April consolidated general election,” Welch wrote in the motions.

In other arguments, attorney Ken Shepro, representing Smith in the election challenge, said Strauss clearly listed a December filing period in an open memo to the election candidates with no reference

made to a primary or a November filing date.

Welch responded that the same memo has a disclaimer in bold type that said the memo was strictly informational and candidates should seek independent legal advice on election code requirements.

Welch, Shepro and Braithewaite also referenced an Aug. 29, 2007, court order that was part of the village’s incorporation. Braithewaite wrote in his proposed findings that the order made no provision for a primary election.

“Again, the parties have operated under this system and cannot now complain,” Braithewaite wrote. “To claim otherwise is to draw every election, every officer and every act of the corporate authorities of the village of Campton Hills into question.”

The electoral board meeting is scheduled to resume at 2 p.m. Jan. 2 at the Congregational United Church of Christ, 40W451 Fox Mill Blvd., Campton Hills, pending availability of the building, Millette said.

Geneva library makes counter-offer on Sixth Street property

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The Geneva Public Library Board recently voted to direct its president to propose a counteroffer to Kane County in connection with a real estate contract for the purchase of the Sixth Street School property.

The vote followed a closed-session meeting, after the board’s monthly meeting, last week, officials said.

Subject to consultation with its legal counsel, the board voted 5-0 to have board President Robert Shiffler make a counteroffer of contract modifications to change language in two areas, officials said.

“Striking the language in parenthetical in paragraph 2e that says ‘but subject to a use restriction requiring use by a public entity for public use purposes,’” notes a statement released by library di-

rector Christine Lazaris.

“And also striking the footnote on page 4 that deals with the ALTA [American Land Title Association] survey not depicting the location and dimensions of the building and that we ask to have it also include the height of the building,” notes the statement.

Library board member Pat Lord said no final action has been taken toward buying the Sixth Street School property.

“It is fair to say we are discussing language for a proposed agreement,” Lord said.

“It’s a counteroffer in terms of the language of the agreement. They proposed some language, and we proposed some different language … .

We have steps to take yet.”

Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen could not be reached for comment.

She peacefully left this earthly world while sur-

rounded by the love and prayers of her family, Tuesday, December 23, 2014, at The Grand Victorian of Sycamore, an assisted living facility, where she had recently made her home.

She was born December 22, 1924, in Virgil, IL, the daughter of Frank and Barbara (Hardt) Turk.

Evelyn attended local schools in Maple Park, where she lived most of her life. She was united in marriage to John “Bud” “Sully” Yagen on September 22, 1956 at St. Mary’s of Maple Park.

Prior to her marriage, Evelyn was employed in the office of the Elgin Watch Factory. Before her retirement, she was secretary at the Maple Park Elementary School for eighteen years. Evelyn was a clerk in the Virgil Post Office and was Treasurer of the Village of Virgil when it incorporated in 1990. Evelyn was a long time faithful member of S.S. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Virgil.

The joys in her life were the vacations she and Sully took in the fall to the New England States as well as their many trips to Wisconsin for fishing, not to mention all the fun times spent with dear friends. Evelyn also had so many good times shopping and having lunch with her nieces. She also enjoyed attending sporting events and playing in several local card clubs. Evelyn always kept up on current events by reading the local newspapers, but indulged herself in novels as well. Cards and letters that came in the mail made each day special and Evelyn treasured each and everyone.

She is survived by her brother, Joseph Turk; sisters-in-law, Mary Anne Schramer and Guyla Yagen; over fifty nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, greatgreat nieces and nephews; as well as a close circle of friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband and their two still born sons; two sisters, Dolores “Sis” Turk and Rosalie (Jerry) Berkes; two brothers, Peter and Francis Turk; sisters-inlaw, Marge Turk and Dolores Hart Turk; her nephew, Thomas Berkes; and the many beloved Yagen inlaws whom she held dear.

2 resignation letters detail reasons for leaving Geneva library board 11 GENEVA – In one week, the Geneva Public Library Board lost two of its members because of resignations: one from its board president, Esther Steel, and the other from Trustee Susan Shivers.

Library officials released both resignation letters. Steel cited moving out of the district as her reason to resign.

Shivers, a local attorney, gave an increasing workload as her reason.

Steel did not respond to requests for comment, and Shivers responded “no comment” in an email.

Steel, who was on the board for 12 years, 10 of them as president, moved to Elburn because of an opportunity to buy a property where she

could keep her horses close by, “a goal I have had for several years,” she wrote in her Dec. 12 letter.

“This was an extremely difficult decision for me,” Steel’s letter stated. “The library has been a major part of my life.”

Steel also wrote that the library board “made an excellent choice” in Christine Lazaris as the new director.

She praised fellow board members for their commitment to the library and the library staff for its professionalism.

Shivers’ resignation letter – sent in a Dec. 18 email – cites her law practice’s increasing work schedule, coupled with the belief that more or longer board meetings would be required, as her reason to resign.

“I am not in a position to

continue to devote the time to the library that it deserves,” Shivers wrote.

Library officials redacted a portion of Shivers’ letter, citing three exemptions under

the Freedom of Information Act. Two exemptions regarded personal information, and the third exemption was for “preliminary drafts, notes, recommendations, memoran-

da and other records in which opinions are expressed.”

Shivers was elected in 2011.

Previously, she had served on the Geneva School District 304 Board.

‘True meaning of Christmas’ Christmas Day. It’s the day that children look forward to all year round, eagerly making lists for Santa Claus and hanging ornaments on the tree. It’s the day that families cherish as a time to be together, giving gifts and enjoying a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. It’s the day that I find to be one of the most special of the year. Is it because of Christmas magic?

Perhaps. But I think there’s a deeper meaning to this special season than the one that society has attached to it.

We hear it a lot, don’t we? “The true meaning of Christmas.” It’s the basis of nearly every holiday movie, the phrase found in Hallmark Christmas cards and something parents constantly remind their kids of in hopes of quelling pre-Christmas consumerism. But what exactly is the “true meaning of Christmas”? We hear these words so often that perhaps they’ve lost their effectiveness. However, when we look deep down, we can find the essence of what makes this time of year so special.

These days, Christmas is more of a societal, consumeristic norm than anything else. We spend money on lavish gifts for those we love.

We spend hours decorating both inside and outside our houses with everything from flashing lights to festive garlands. We stress out about holiday plans and who’s going where for Christmas dinner. But, when we think about it, is this what Christmas is supposed to be? A stressful, extravagant, showy occasion that’s almost a relief to be through with? Not at all.

There’s a reason people get time off work and school to celebrate. It’s supposed to be a break from the craziness of life and provide a chance for us to reflect on what’s truly important.

And what is truly important? Some people may say the presents. Others may say the festive activities around town. While these are all good

THE WRITE PLACE Emma Chrusciel things that help make Christmas a special time of year, they don’t provide an answer as to why we celebrate. Instead, it’s the simpler things that matter – the things that can’t be found in the bargain aisle at Wal-Mart or blinking in light displays. It’s the joy of a family, sitting around the Christmas tree on Dec. 25, with their gifts to each other serving as an expression of their love. It’s the camaraderie between those in a church on Christmas Eve, who believe that the birth of their Savior is the reason for the season. It’s the happiness of a needy person who receives the help of volunteers on Christmas, making their holiday season infinitely better.

See the difference here? Society’s all about the outside, with the gifts and lights and shopping. The true meaning of Christmas is found on the inside, where the gladness of togetherness, faith and service makes Christmastime a truly special time of year.

So, this Christmas, feel free to enjoy the pleasures of the season. I know that I never turn down a delicious cookie or a charming movie!

But, also, I hope you’ll look a little deeper this year.

Instead of seeing just the gift, see the person who gave it to you with love in their heart. Instead of focusing on overspending, focus on giving something thoughtful to someone you care about.

There’s more to the holidays than what meets the eye – because the true meaning of Christmas is what’s found in the heart.

VIRGINIA: Your little friends are wrong.

They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except [what] they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds.

All minds, Virginia, whether they be men’s or children’s, are little.

In this great universe of ours, man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they

abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas!

How dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus. It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.

No Santa Claus! Thank God! He lives, and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

Top Table aims to provide excellent food, service

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – In choosing a name for their first restaurant, Hampshire couple Nathan and Amanda Drafall tried to come up with something that reflected the excellent food and service the establishment aims to provide.

Top Table restaurant opened in September at 1 W. Illinois Ave., Suite 170, St. Charles, in the Fox Island Square center.

Bistro One West, which closed in November 2012, formerly occupied the space.

“It is something that rises above – the best of the best,” Amanda Drafall said of the restaurant’s name.

The couple runs the restaurant along with Amanda Drafall’s mother-in-law, Cynthia Drafall. For the couple, opening the restaurant truly is a dream come true.

“We dated in high school, and he used to wine and dine me and take me out to really nice restaurants when we were younger,” Amanda Drafall said. “He would always say, ‘Wouldn’t it be funny if when we were older one day we could own a restaurant. And here we are.’”

They spent a lot of time renovating the space to make it their own, including installing booths to provide additional privacy.

“We added our own personal touch to it to give it the warmth and feeling that we would want if we went to a restaurant, if my husband was taking me out to dinner,” she said.

Top Table serves such fare as steaks, seafood, chops, burgers and ribs. In planning the restaurant’s menu, the couple thought about the items they would like to see if they were going out for a night on the town.

That includes baked french onion soup, which is one of the soups featured on Top Table’s menu.

“Before Top Table opened, we went to every other restaurant to try and find out who had the best one,” Amanda Drafall said. “My husband is a big meat-and-potatoes guy. I love fish, and I really love pasta dishes. We don’t offer too many pastas, but there is a chicken ziti dish that the chef makes that is outstanding.”

The restaurant’s executive chef, Josef Yurisich, is a familiar face in the area as he previously worked at Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles for almost 23 years.

“He was used to running and managing four kitchens at the same time and not just one,” Amanda Drafall said. “He definitely has the experience. His presentation and passion alone are outstanding. We are very thankful every day that he is here, because of the magnificent dishes that he creates.”

Top Table is open for dinner and recently started serving lunches. In the new year, Top Table will be serving lunch on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, Amanda Drafall said.

Among the dishes Top Table in St. Charles serves are fresh seared scallops (above) with sautéed arugula, white bean and fennel, served with orzo and a bacon vinaigrette; and pepper crusted filet mignon skewers (below) on a bed of sweet tomato salad with blue cheese bacon fondue dipping sauce.

The restaurant’s most popular items include such dishes as a crowned filet, Mediterranean mahi-mahi, chicken ziti and a dry aged Tomahawk steak.

“People who appreciate good steaks, they said they really do appreciate our restaurant,” Amanda Drafall said. “They appreciate what we have brought to the table.”

Her favorite item on the menu is Amanda’s slow roasted prime rib.

“It has nothing to do with it being named after me,” she said. “I love it because I just love how tender the meat is and the flavor.”

All of the food is prepared inhouse, she said. For some of its desserts, Top Table works with

Kimmer’s Ice Cream, which also is located in the Fox Island Square center.

“That’s probably the only thing we don’t make in-house,” Amanda Drafall said. “Everything else the chef makes from scratch.”

The word is starting to get out about Top Table, and the restaurant has been seeing repeat customers.

“It’s all by word-of-mouth,” Amanda Drafall said. “We have quite a few repeat customers, which is nice and heartfelt.”

Top Table will ring in the new year with a New Year’s Eve party that will feature live entertainment. For the convenience of its customers, www. opentable.com takes all of Top Table’s reservations.

‘Real’ deal ‘Modern Family’ producer buys film rights to local author’s book, ‘Real Santa’ Obviously, see the movies produced – seeing both movies out would be great.

I try not to get too far ahead of myself because it’s a brickby-brick career.

[Right now,] I have books waiting to be written that I’ve already signed for, and that’s great because it allows you to have focus as a writer. For [a] long time, I’d write books and think, “I don’t know if this will ever get published.”

by Booklist states, “If somebody doesn’t make a movie out of this book, there’s something wrong with the world.”

Well, someone has decided to do just that.

“Modern Family” producer Vicki Rocco recently bought the film rights to “Real Santa” for her production company – Small But Mighty Productions – with an eye for a feature or made-for-television movie. This news comes on the back of Hazelgrove’s summer announcement that he sold the rights to his fifth book, “The Pitcher,” to producer Ed Bates, who currently is adapting the screenplay.

Kane County Chronicle Features Editor Kara Silva got to chat with the Campton Hills resident about his recent successes and living the literary dream.

Kara Silva: Can you briefly explain what “Real Santa” is all about?

William Hazelgrove: It all started when my daughter started to doubt Santa Claus.

We live in this sort of Victorian farmhouse. [It has] three chimneys … and kind of a flat roof. I [was] looking out the window, thinking about Santa, and then I’m like, “You know, you could land reindeer on the roof, and going down the chimney wouldn’t be that hard.” What if there was this crazy mechanical engineer, and he decides to do it; to do the physics of it – to be the real Santa. How would you do it?

So, I started researching and trying to figure out how to put reindeer on the roof; how to actually create the illusion of flying, and from there it just snowballed, so to speak. It’s all [about] what would you do for your kid? How far would you go?

Silva: How long did it take to write?

Hazelgrove: First draft was less than six months.

That’s such a different medium.

I will say this, most movies fail because they have [bad] stories at their core. They’re flimsy. It’s not thought out. My novels are good stories at their core.

Hazelgrove: Good question.

Here’s what I do. At Barnes and Noble, the books are all on tables, so what people don’t know is that publishers pay to get their bestsellers on those tables. The rest of the authors have to fight for shelf space.

So, my book, “Real Santa,” is [organized] really neat.

[Barnes and Noble] put it face out instead of spine out. But it’s not on the tables.

So, I [find] my book; I pick it up. I walk over to the table, shove a few [books] over and then plop – I put it on the holiday table.

When people walk in Barnes and Noble, they look at the tables. I probably have been to 20 Barnes and Nobles in the Chicago area.

Silva: Ever think about moving to Hollywood and becoming a screenplay writer?

Hazelgrove: Never say never.

The only way that would happen is if I continue to publish pretty high-concept books in the future. And they continue to get bought and made [into movies].

Silva: So, what’s next for you?

Are you writing anything at the moment?

Hazelgrove: Yeah, there’s a book coming out in the spring called “Jack Pine.” It’s a big Northwoods epoch about loggers and environmentalists. It’s sweeping, and it’s in a location that I think is pretty interesting to people.

It’s a safe bet her dad knows.

Now that his three children are immersed – and excelling in – his favorite sport, Matt Ronzone finds himself fully invested, too, making up for lost time when Madison, Michael and Megan were growing up in Batavia.

Oh, Matt Ronzone was around then, he just wasn’t hovering. He tries not to hover now, although he can’t help beaming or asking his kids about their mileage every night at dinner.

“He definitely never pushed us into it,” said Michael Ronzone, a Marmion freshman.

“He’d bring it up. ‘You guys could be really good at this.’

But he never made us. And then once we got into it, he’s just been so passionate. A lot of support from him, too.”

Matt Ronzone met his wife, Liz, through a mutual friend while both competed as Notre Dame track and field athletes in the late 1980s. Their relationship started thanks to running; their sense of family has grown because of it.

Ask any Ronzone sibling about his or her top cross country or track achievement to date, and a corresponding brother or sister seems to recall the events just as vividly.

With both parents also no strangers to the neighborhood pavement, the Ronzones enjoy a built-in pastime, if not conversation piece.

“I think it’s nice that we all have something in common,” said Madison Ronzone, an allstate finisher at November’s Class 2A state cross country meet in Peoria. “It’s kind of really easy to talk about it and share how we’re improving, just common success and having the same enjoyment from

Fittingly, all three Ronzone children will attend the brother-and-sister schools Marmion and Rosary next school year.

Megan Ronzone, an eighth-grader who helped Rotolo Middle School to an IESA Class 3A state title in October, will enroll at Rosary in the fall.

She’s looking forward to developing the same fellowship she found in middle school.

And, ideally, similar elation.

“My teammates and my coaches’ reaction to us getting first place, I don’t think we expected it as much,” Megan Ronzone said. “We went in there with a lot of different thoughts and we were nervous. When they called our names, we were shocked and crying. It was a great season. A lot of emotion and a lot of fun.”

Like many runners before and since, Matt Ronzone embraced that atmosphere in cross country and track, in his native Indiana and at Notre Dame.

He cherished a sport that not only hailed individual

strides and success, but somehow made it contagious to want the same for the runners moving along at either side each day.

He met his future wife, and soon after, they were married and started a family. While there’s no revelation story for Matt Ronzone to tell – such as wanting three children to round out a five-member team cross country score with he and his wife – it’s no secret which direction he wanted

them to go.

“If I was somebody on the outside looking in, it might be, ‘Oh, you’re just going to make your kids run,’ ” Matt Ronzone said. “I didn’t want to be like that. I really wanted them to fall in love with the sports like I did. When I hear my kids talk about running, it’s not, ‘Oh, I beat so and so.’ It’s the camaraderie they developed with their teammates.”

that everything good kind of stems from having fun. I can definitely say I had a lot of fun this year, and it was my favorite season of volleyball, I’d have to say, even though we didn’t end on a high note like I wanted to.”

Despite an impressive 31-9 record, the season didn’t end the way Szarmach and her teammates had hoped, with a loss in their second round of the Division III NCAA tournament. But it was her role on the team that produced this season she’ll never forget.

“I had to be a leader for my teammates. I was the only player on the court who had a lot of experience starting,” she said. “So obviously they were going to look to me to keep them level-headed. So I had to be calm myself, and the way that I do that is just by having

Having fun on the volleyball court was important for someone who works as hard as Szarmach in the classroom.

As with any student-athlete, the balance between athletics and academics are important.

When you have three majors and good enough grades to become an Academic All-America, it’s even more important, and Szarmach admits the balance has been tough, though she enjoys both sides of that coin.

She said she’s fortunate she

has those who help her with that balancing act.

“I take a lot of pride in what I do, so I put a lot of pressure on myself to try and do the best work that I can,” said Szarmach, who is studying economics, international business and supply chain. “It is hard during the season. I tried to stay away from taking some of toughest classes during fall because I want to put a lot of time into them. If I can’t then I know I won’t get the results I want. “ … We have really great professors at Elmhurst, and they’re willing to work with you. This semester I had to do an independent study with one of my professors just because I wouldn’t have been able to make the class due to practice and games. So they’re really accommodating, they want

you to succeed, and I really appreciate everything they’ve done for me and continue to do for me.”

Szarmach is planning on doing some more balancing between work and fun in the future, applying to a program that pairs former NCAA athletes with universities in England that are trying to build athletics programs. She’d be playing volleyball while studying to earn her master’s degree in the United Kingdom.

That sure does sound fun.

“I think I’ll regret it if I don’t do it,” she said.

Megan also is a legacy at Annunciation School in Aurora, where she and both siblings have competed in track.

Because Annunciation does not offer cross country, however, Michael and Megan ran cross country at Rotolo.

Madison did not take up cross country until arriving at Rosary in 2012, but that experience influenced her sister.

“Megan wanted to start running earlier than Madison did because she watched Madison [in high school],” Liz Ronzone said. “It’s been a good road for Megan.”

Meantime, Michael felt influential pulls from a variety of sources.

“Knowing that my dad had run in college, that’s what really drove me,” he said.

In July, the Ronzones traveled to Mackinac Island, Michigan, as part of their vacation. Naturally, they could not stomach a respite from running. Some vacation days were planned around a daily

workout.

In Michigan, each family member took aim at the task of running around the island’s perimeter, approximately eight miles, they said.

Following the recent norm – Madison estimates Michael surpassed her as the fastest

Ronzone a couple years ago – everyone ran at a different pace.

Some even went in different directions.

“We’d come face-to-face with each other as we were running,” Madison said, “so it was nice to see a familiar

face.”

Next school year promises perhaps the biggest dose of deja vú for the family’s sisters yet.

Rosary’s season opener still won’t be the first time the siblings have been at the same meet site. Repaying Megan for the youngest-child factor she couldn’t exactly control, Madison and Michael rooted for their sister at several Rotolo meets.

Conversely, Megan will already be well-versed with Peoria’s Detweiller Park whenever she lines up in the starter’s box for her first IHSA state meet. She has supported her sister there before, and hoped to do the same for Michael before he narrowly missed the cut at sectionals in November.

“It was a bummer, being two tenths of a second away and one point as a team,” Michael said. “But I definitely learned that I have a lot more to improve. … I’m taking it for what it’s worth and I’m seeing it as a motivator for next year.”

If he ever should lose sight of that goal, Michael need only leave his room. Even if it isn’t dinnertime, it’s likely at least one family member has running on the brain.

It hit Sam Szarmach before this season: She needed to have some fun.

Szarmach’s been working hard for the past four years at Elmhurst College. Really hard.

The St. Charles East alumna has endured the rigors of four seasons of college volleyball and has been working even harder on the academic side of things. She’ll graduate with three majors.

Oh, and she was just named an Academic All-America.

So Szarmach, the eternal hard-worker, needed to have some fun this year.

“Going into my senior season, I just really wanted to have fun, and I kind of made that my goal this year,” she said. “As I’ve gone through the program, I’ve learned a lot, and I’ve realized that’s the most important thing,

East coach Woods is giving a varsity shot to forward Justin Hardy, who has seen minutes off the bench this week at the Chuck Dayton Classic in DeKalb.

While East’s commanding leads have made it easier for Woods to slot in Hardy, the Saints’ coach suggests Hardy will – at some point – play a major role for the program.

“He’s a big, strong kid,” Woods said.

“We’re just kind of giving him some looks right now. We figured now’s the best time to do that over Christmas, but he will be a future star in our program. He’s 6-foot-4 and 200-plus pounds, and he can dunk the ball and shoot it really well, too.

“He had a torn meniscus back in July, otherwise he probably would have been up sooner. He rehabbed it, it was kind of like a Derrick Rose situation where he needed six months, came back real slow. He played like three or four games at the freshman level and pretty much had his way down there. We’re just going to kind of see where he fits in, but you’ll be hearing that name a lot in the future.”

The reality – again typifying a difficult Bears season – is that more bad than good can come out of this game, where Cutler is concerned. If he’s good, the Bears finish 6-9 and

move down as many a four slots in the draft order. But if Cutler gets injured, it could impact his value in a potential trade.

Trestman wasn’t making more of Cutler’s start in the finale than what it is – he’s got enough to worry about, actually.

“We’re playing the game as an independent entity,” Trestman said. “Jay’s got to go out – as do the rest of us and his teammates go – and play at their best. I don’t look at it as any more than that. We’ve got to play well enough to win and we’ve got to play well at quarterback to win, too.”

LAKE FOREST – Jay Cutler is a realist. No matter what he does Sunday against the Vikings, Monday will be an interesting day at Halas Hall.

“I think you’ve just got to prepare yourself that anything can happen – that’s kind of what I’m prepared for,” Cutler said Wednesday. “I mean, everyone could stay. Everyone could get axed. You just never know what direction it’s going to go. You have to stay open-minded and know that things happen for a reason.”

The fate of Marc Trestman and his coaching staff and general manager Phil Emery is all that’s left of one of the most dreadful seasons in Bears history – the 5-10 Bears play the 6-9 Vikings in the season finale Sunday at TCF Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. And Cutler knows that his future with the Bears will be impacted by the decisions that are made Monday.

It could be a rough day all around.

“Coaches could leave. Players could leave. I could leave,” Cutler said. “That’s part of it.”

But Sunday’s game against the Vikings is just a game. A meaningless game for pride and little else. It is unlikely to impact Cutler’s future with the Bears one way or the other.

“I don’t know. I’m not the one to answer that question,” Cutler said. “All I know is we’ve got a good game plan.

Cutler’s return as the Bears’ starter Sunday typifies a season of wild twists and turns.

He figured his season was over when he was benched in favor of Jimmy Clausen last week against the Lions. But Clausen suffered a concussion – that wasn’t diagnosed until Monday because of “delayed symptoms” – and Trestman named Cutler the starter against the Vikings on Monday.

“I knew [Clausen] took a shot,” Cutler said, referring to the direct helmet-to-helmet hit from Lions defensive end Ziggy Ansah. “But he did his postgame press conference. He said he was cool. I went home thinking, ‘I was gonna watch another game.’ But it’s been one of those years where you never know what’s gonna happen.”

One of those years, indeed.

“You’ve got to expect the least expected,” said Cutler, whose 28 touchdown passes and 89.5 passer rating this season are career-high marks.

“Hopefully, we make it through the next couple days without something else happening.

You never know, though.”

Cutler said he has not had time to reflect on this wretched season – what went wrong and what could be learned from it.

All he knows is that it’s been unlike any other season in his nine-year NFL career.

“Yeah, it’s a different season. It’s a weird season,” he said. “A lot of things have happened. A lot of things haven’t gone our way for numerous reasons.”

Fibroid treatment often depends on symptoms Dear Doctor K: I saw my doctor because of pain in my pelvis and heavy menstrual bleeding. Tests showed that I have fibroids. What are fibroids and how are they treated?

Dear Reader: A fibroid is a lump or growth in the uterus that is not cancerous. Fibroids can be as small as a pea or as large as a basketball. They are usually round and pinkish in color, and they can grow anywhere inside or on the uterus.

The number of fibroids, their size and how fast they grow varies from one woman to another. (I’ve put an illustration of fibroids on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

Female hormones encourage fibroids to grow. Fibroids continue growing until menopause, when production of female hormones drops off.

Often, fibroids cause no symptoms. A woman may not realize that she has a fibroid until her gynecologist feels it during a pelvic exam. When symptoms do occur, they can include pain and heavy menstrual bleeding, abdominal swelling, infertility and repeated miscarriages.

If fibroids are small and are not causing any symptoms, they do not need to be treated. You may need regular pelvic exams

If your doctor thinks a fibroid is growing so rapidly that it may soon cause symptoms, he or she may prescribe medications to temporarily shrink it. In addition, in rare cases, about one woman in every 50,000 will have a cancer in the uterus that at first is diagnosed as a fibroid.

Your fibroids may need to be removed if they cause significant symptoms, interfere with your fertility or if your doctor cannot determine whether they are fibroids or cancer. There are several options for removing fibroids: • Myomectomy. In this surgical procedure, fibroids are cut out of the uterine wall. This surgery may be done through small incisions or a larger incision in the lower abdomen, depending on the number and size of the fibroids. Myomectomy allows a woman to keep her uterus in case she wants to have children.

• Hysteroscopic resection.

A viewing instrument called a hysteroscope is inserted into the uterus through the vagina.

Surgical instruments attached to the hysteroscope remove fibroids from the uterus.

• Uterine artery embolization. Material is injected into specific blood vessels to stop blood flow to a fibroid or fibroids. Without blood, the fibroids shrink.

New fibroids can appear any time before you enter menopause after any of these procedures.

• Hysterectomy. The uterus is removed, along with the fibroids within it. This procedure may be the best option if fibroids are numerous or large, and causing bothersome symptoms that are not responding to treatment. Obviously, a woman who still wants to be able to have children should not have a hysterectomy. Fibroids cannot grow back after a hysterectomy.

Fibroids are more likely to occur in women who are African-American; started menstruating before the age of 10; have had fewer than two pregnancies; eat lots of red meat; or who have vitamin D deficiency (as indicated by a blood test).

Dr. Wallace: I met Nate at a wedding we both attended about a year ago. Both of us had just ended steady relationships and were on the rebound. PUBLIC WATER SUPPLY LOAN PROGRAM ORDINANCE AUTHORIZING LOAN AGREEMENT ORDINANCE NUMBER 2014-04 AN ORDINANCE authorizing the WASCO SANITARY DISTRICT of Campton Hills, Kane County, Illinois to borrow funds from the Public Water Supply Loan Program WHEREAS, the Wasco Sanitary District of Campton Hills, Kane County, Illinois operates its public water supply system (the "System) in accordance with the provisions of the Sanitary District Act of 1936, 70 ILCS 2805/1, et. seq. and the Local Government Debt Reform Act, 30 ILCS 350/1 (collectively the "Act"), and WHEREAS, the Board of Trustees of the Wasco Sanitary District (''the Corporate Authorities") has determined that it is advisable, necessary and in the best interests of public health, safety and welfare to improve the System, including the following: REHABILITATION OF WATER TOWER together with any land or rights in land and all electrical, mechanical or other services necessary, useful or advisable to the construction and installation ("the Project"), all in accordance with the plans and specifications prepared by consulting engineers of the Wasco Sanitary District; which Project has a useful life of 25 years; and WHEREAS, the estimated cost of construction and installation of the Project, including engineering, legal, financial and other related expenses is $558,945.00, and there are insufficient funds on hand and lawfully available to pay these costs; and WHEREAS, the loan shall bear an interest rate as defined by 35 Ill. Adm. Code 662, which does not exceed the maximum rate authorized by the Bond Authorization Act, as amended, 30 ILCS 305/0.01 et seq., at the time of the issuance of the loan; and WHEREAS, the principal and interest payment shall be payable semi-annually, and the loan shall mature in 20 years, which is within the period of useful life of the Project; and WHEREAS, the costs are expected to be paid for with a loan to the Wasco Sanitary District from the Public Water Supply Loan Program through the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, the loan to be repaid from revenues of the System and the loan is authorized to be accepted at this time pursuant to the Act; and WHEREAS, in accordance with the provisions of the Act, the Wasco Sanitary District is authorized to borrow funds from the Public Water Supply Loan Program in the aggregate principal amount of $558,945.00 to provide funds to pay the costs of the Project; WHEREAS, the loan to the Wasco Sanitary District shall be made pursuant to a Loan Agreement, including certain terms and conditions, between the Wasco Sanitary District and the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency; NOW THEREFORE, be it ordained by the Corporate Authorities of the Wasco Sanitary District of Campton Hills, Kane County, Illinois, as follows: SECTION 1 INCORPORATION OF PREAMBLES The Corporate Authorities hereby find that the recitals contained in the preambles are true and correct, and incorporate them into this Ordinance by this reference.

SECTION 2 DETERMINATION TO BORROW FUNDS It is necessary and in the best interests of the Wasco Sanitary District to construct the Project for the public health, safety and welfare, in accordance with the plans and specifications, as described; that the System continues to be operated in accordance with the provision of the Act; and that for the purpose of constructing the Project, it is hereby authorized that funds be borrowed by the Wasco Sanitary District in an aggregate principal amount (which can include construction period interest financed over the term of the loan) not to exceed $558,945.00.

SECTION 3 PUBLICATION This Ordinance, together with a Notice in the statutory form (attached hereto as Exhibit A), shall be published once within ten days after passage in the Kane County Chronicle, a newspaper published and of general circulation in the Wasco Sanitary District, and if no petition, signed by electors numbering 10% or more of the registered voters in the Wasco Sanitary District (i.e., 202) asking that the question of improving the System as provided in this Ordinance and entering into the Loan Agreement therefore be submitted to the electors of the Wasco Sanitary District, is filed with the Wasco Sanitary District Clerk within 30 days after the date of publication of this Ordinance and notice, then this Ordinance shall be in full force and effect. A petition form shall be provided by the Wasco Sanitary District Clerk to any individual requesting one.

SECTION 4 ADDITIONAL ORDINANCES If no petition meeting the requirements of the Act and other applicable laws is filed during the 30-day petition period, then the Corporate Authorities may adopt additional ordinances or proceedings supplementing or amending this Ordinance providing for entering into the Loan Agreement with the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, prescribing all the details of the Loan Agreement, and providing for the collection, segregation and distribution of the, so long as the maximum amount of the Loan Agreement as set forth in this Ordinance is not exceeded and there is no material change in the Project or purposes described herein. Any additional ordinances or proceedings shall in all instances become effective in accordance with the Act or other applicable law. This Ordinance, together with such additional ordinances or proceedings, shall constitute complete authority for entering into the Loan Agreement under applicable law.

However, notwithstanding the above, the Wasco Sanitary District may not adopt additional ordinances or amendments which provide for any substantive or material change in the scope and intent of this Ordinance, including but not limited to interest rate, preference, or priority of any other ordinance with this Ordinance, parity of any other ordinance with this Ordinance, or otherwise alter or impair the obligation of the Wasco Sanitary District to pay the principal and interest due to the Public Water Supply Loan Program without the written consent of the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency.

SECTION 5 LOAN NOT INDEBTEDNESS OF WASCO SANITARY DISTRICT Repayment of the loan to the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency by the Wasco Sanitary District pursuant to this Ordinance is to be solely from the revenue derived from revenues of the System, and the loan does not constitute an indebtedness of the Wasco Sanitary District within the meaning of any constitutional or statutory limitation.

SECTION 6 APPLICATION FOR LOAN The Clerk is hereby authorized to make application to the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency for a loan through the Public Water Supply Loan Program, in accordance with the loan requirements set out in 35 Ill. Adm. Code 662.

SECTION 7 ACCEPTANCE OF LOAN AGREEMENT The Corporate Authorities hereby authorize acceptance of the offer of a loan through the Public Water Supply Loan Program, including all terms and conditions of the Loan Agreement as well as all special conditions contained therein and made a part thereof by reference. The Corporate Authorities further agree that the loan funds awarded shall be used solely for the purposes of the project as approved by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency in accordance with the terms and conditions of the Loan Agreement.

SECTION 8 AUTHORIZATION OF PRESIDENT TO EXECUTE LOAN AGREEMENT The President is hereby authorized and directed to execute the Loan Agreement with the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency. The Corporate Authorities may authorize by resolution a person other than the President for the sole purpose of authorizing or executing any documents associated with payment requests or reimbursements from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency in connection with this loan.

SECTION 9 SEVERABILITY If any section, paragraph, clause or provision of this Ordinance is held invalid, the invalidity of such section, paragraph, clause or provision shall not affect any of the other provisions of this Ordinance.

SECTION 10 REPEALER All ordinances, resolutions or orders, or parts thereof, which conflict with the provisions of this Ordinance are, to the extent of such conflict, hereby repealed.

A Victorian house gets hip for the holidays

hen Hallie and Mark Burrier first saw the Victorian rowhouse in Frederick, Maryland, dusted with snow in January 2010, their thoughts turned to Christmas.

“This was a Christmas house,” says Hallie, who was house-hunting at the time. “I could picture our family and friends gathered in the formal dining room for dinner and our tree in the bay window. It felt good and right.”

Now the Burriers are on their fifth holiday in this 1890 home, and Mark, 35, and Hallie, 37, have established traditions that they look forward to all year. Using a mix of modern materials and traditional trimmings, the Burriers bring the holiday to every

room in the house. Silver balls fill the apothecary jar in the master bathroom, and above their bed, a wreath adorns a cardboard deer head from Target. Garlands are wrapped around the staircase, and a festive bar is set in the living room on West Elm’s Sculpted Geo Console table.

“My family has always been big on traditions,” says Mark, who grew up in the town of Myersville, about 15 minutes away. “I’m glad Hallie and I are creating our own.”

The Burriers own two local shops within a few blocks of their home: Relish Decor and Treaty General Store. Like many other shop owners, the Burriers work seven days a week from Black Friday to Christmas Eve. Hallie used to be in visual merchandising at Bloomingdale’s, Britches

and Urban Outfitters, and she works at the Burriers’ two businesses full time. Mark has a job at Enforme Interactive doing graphic and Web design in an office around the corner from their house, and he pitches in on evenings and weekends. Each year, the Burriers go into marathon mode trying to produce the perfect holiday for their customers, so they must do their own decorating very early.

“On Thanksgiving, we have a traditional homemade dinner at noon at Mark’s grandmother’s house in Myersville, and we hang out,” Hallie says. “We come home just as it’s getting dark and start decorating.” First, they pull the tree from a red storage bag, a narrow, 9-foot-tall, pre-lighted Martha Stewart tree from Home De-

pot. It’s the best choice for their limited free time and space. To replicate the missing fresh fir scent, Hallie uses lots of fresh greens around the house and burns spruce-scented candles.

They don’t play Christmas carols.

“Holiday music is on the banned list, due to too much mall retail,” Hallie says. So it’s likely to be some New Order or the Cure. Lucy, their wheaten terrier, watches them decorate while curled up on the sofa next to a red pillow that spells out “Cheers” (from T.J. Maxx) that has just been unpacked for the season.

Hallie and Mark met on a train going from Washington to New York.

They were married in 2008 and first lived in an apartment in Virginia.

Decorating is a pleasure for Hallie, who has an eye for creating vignettes and unexpected combinations.

Each year, she comes up with a different look for her mantels, centerpieces and tablescapes.

“I decided to go natural on the mantel this year to balance the fake tree,” she said. “I wanted a bit of sparkle and glamour and a collected feeling.”

She put up cedar garland and pine cone balls from Target. The sparkly

reindeer with a fur collar, a gift from her mom, added the glitz. On the dining room she created a low centerpiece on a linen runner from Relish Decor using magnolia clusters, bay leaves and clementines. This year for their holiday dinner parties and on Christmas day, Hallie will be staging a hot chocolate bar, with her Wedgwood Barbara Barry china tea cups and stirring sticks of dark chocolate with marshmallows or peppermint.

having that hot chocolate on Christmas morning. The retail crush will be over, and Frederick is calm and peaceful. The Burriers spend the day at home with Hallie’s parents, who are usually visiting from Virginia Beach, and other family and friends.

“It’s just perfect,” Hallie said. “The church bells ring, the shoppers are gone and the streets are quiet. We eat a lot of food, play Monopoly and stay in our pajamas all day.”

They moved to Frederick for the wonderful architecture, affordable prices and charming village atmosphere, and to be close to Mark’s work and family. The 15-foot-wide brick house with its original oak floors and long back yard is in the Frederick Historic District, just steps from shops and restaurants.

“The home was very pretty when we bought it, but it didn’t feel like young people lived here,” Hallie recalls. “I wanted to cut the elegant part with some modern and whimsical.”

They repainted every room, added some wallpaper, bolstered the existing crown molding, added window benches and renovated the master bathroom.

They made the first floor more dramatic, painting the dining room Benjamin Moore Black and the living room Seal Grey by Glidden. They added Kelly Wearstler’s Imperial Trellis black-onblack wallpaper above the living room mantel.

While renovating, Hallie began selling contemporary and vintage accessories for entertaining. In 2013, the couple opened Relish Decor, a shop that specializes in entertaining and kitchen items.

In October, they opened Treaty General Store, a mix of well-designed utilitarian items such as terrariums, wool camp blankets and canvas laundry bags.
