New award aims to honor youths’ musical contributions

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Beginning next year, St. Charles will have its version of the Stanley Cup, but instead of honoring hockey champs, it will recognize a youth’s contributions to the musical arts.

Although it’s spearheaded

by The Jank Guitar Store in downtown St. Charles, shop owner Scott Corbin said the initiative has received support from the St. Charles Park District, the city of St. Charles and several businesses – Hotel Baker, Blue Goose Market,

Colonial Cafe, the Arcada Theatre, The Finery and Blacksmith Bar, Zimmerman Ford and the Kane County Chronicle.

Corbin, 31, described the varied sponsorship as a “nice representation” of the city, which he said aligns with the intent that the Guitar of St. Charles Jank Award comes from not one entity but from the community.

“The community is the one doing the recognizing,” he said.

The award – which will be a guitar passed to recipients year after year – aims to rec-

ognize 10- to 18-year-olds who have made a series of achievements in the musical arts, Corbin said.

He noted the winners don’t need to be musical.

“They could just love music,” he said.

The award ceremony will be held in Lincoln Park, where the Official Guitar of St. Charles statue is set for installation, Corbin said. He called it a “huge honor” to have the monument there. “[Lincoln Park is] kind of like our town square,” he said.

In addition to approving the statue’s location, the St.

Charles Park District also made a $2,500 contribution toward the project. The St. Charles City Council unanimously approved a $2,500 funding request on Monday.

Corbin said the bronze artwork is being made by sculptor Ray Kobald, who created the downtown statues of Colonel Baker and Delora Norris.

The first ceremony for the Guitar of St. Charles Jank Award is set for June 12, 2016 – exactly a year since Corbin opened The Jank Guitar Store at 217 W. Main St., he said.

“I couldn’t ask for more support,” Corbin said.

St. Charles police share crime prevention tips KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – St. Charles police hope some crime prevention tips can help lower the amount of burglaries and theft in the city, according to a news release.

Police recommend keeping the doors and windows of

homes and cars locked at all times. Residents can use additional security measures, such as a deadbolt at their home or an alarm for their vehicle, the release states.

The exterior of each home should be lit around the doors, windows and driveway, according to the release.

To make it difficult for crim-

inals to break in undetected, trim hedges, bushes and trees around home doors and windows, the release states.

Always place packages, purses and other valuables out of sight, according to the release. Schedule package deliveries for when someone is home, or have a trusted neighbor accept them.

When going out of town on vacation, put one or two lights on timers and stop mail and newspaper deliveries, the release states.

“It’s always a good idea to let your neighbors know when you will be gone or are expecting a package,” St. Charles Police Chief Jim Keegan stated in the release. “We rely on

residents to be additional ‘eyes and ears’ for us. If you see something out of the ordinary, call 911 immediately. Our officers also can perform a check on your home if you will be away for an extended period.”

Safety concerns emerge at Anderson Road in Elburn

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – Village officials said the extension of Anderson Road, including the bridge over the Union Pacific train tracks, generated a great deal of interest from residents almost immediately after opening.

Trustees and officials at Monday’s Elburn Village Board meeting reported that people were pleased that the road is open, but there were questions and concerns about safety.

They wanted to know why guard rails are in place at the top of the bridge, but not in the area leading up to the bridge on either side. They asked about the lack of street lights. Could there be signage to alert drivers that there no longer is a stop sign at the intersection of Prairie Valley Street, since Kaneland John Stewart Elementary School sits at that intersection?

The Anderson Road extension opened recently in Elburn.

Elburn Trustee Pat Schuberg said of the project. “We are all hearing about it.”

“I am just amazed at how many people reached out to me with comments,” Trustee Bill Grabarek said.

Trustees and village officials pointed out that the road, for the first year, is under the control of Kane County. After the first year, Anderson Road will come under Elburn’s control. However, Elburn officials said they are collecting concerns and having discussions with those who can provide answers.

“It’s a beautiful road,” said John Nevenhoven, the vil-

lage’s public works director.

“But it’s not our road for a year.”

Elburn Village Administrator Erin Willrett said the road was designed to specifications and meets standards.

She acknowledged the safety questions and said, “We are working together to express concerns.”

Village President Dave Anderson said he was asked about why there isn’t a fourway stop sign at the intersection of Anderson and Route 38.

“It was not funded because it was not a required part of the project,” Willrett said.

Steve Coffinbarger, the Kane County assistant director of transportation, said Wednesday that the county’s department of transportation has been working with the village for many years on the improvement.

“Our staff is aware of many of the concerns,” Coffinbarger said.

Coffinbarger said there would be an additional cost for items not already included in the contract plans. As to who would pay for any changes, he said it “depends on what the item is and who is requesting it, those sorts of things.” He added that “it’s yet to be determined if anything is going to be added to the plan.”

Some questions can be answered. Willrett said there are street lights that are not yet active because they are not connected to electricity yet. She said the electricity will be connected in time, as the Shodeen company begins construction on its development set in the area.

proaching the bridge, Coffinbarger said there is a curb along the side of the road, and “if cars were to encounter that, they would be directed back to the pavement.”

“Since it’s a concern, it’s something we’ll consider,” Coffinbarger said of the potential of extending guard rails at some point.

Anderson said for many, it will be a matter of becoming familiar with the road.

“It’s a change of something that people aren’t used to,” he said, adding “all of us hate changes until we get used to them.”

TREATING YOUR CONTACTS RIGHT While many people manhandle their eyeglasses without compromising their visual health, mistreating contact lenses poses some real health risks. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported that 40%-90% of contact lens wearers do not properly follow their contact lens care instructions, which may help explain why, every year, one in 500 contact lens wearers gets a serious eye infection. One of the best ways to avert infection is to avoid exposing contacts to tap water, which can contain bacteria and other microbes. One germ in particular, an amoeba called Acanthamoeba, which is typically found in tap water and other sources, causes an infection (Acanthamoebea keratitis) that can require a year’s worth of treatment and, possibly, a corneal transplant.

P.S. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that if all contact lens wearers regularly and properly cleaned their contact lens cases, the number of occurrences of moderate to severe lens-related infections could be cut in half.

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com Santa Claus sat before a fireplace as shy children sidled up to the white-bearded man clad in the bright red suit, their secret Christmas wishes shared in breathy whispers right into his ear.

The line formed to the left at the Sugar Grove Community Building during its Holiday in the Grove event earlier this month, where Santa heard requests from more than 100 children.

“Bubbles,” said James Linneman, 5, of Sugar Grove.

The Santa and the Christmas experience includes not only the children’s requests for gifts and a photo with St. Nicholas himself, but also the joy and excitement of parents for their children.

“I’m looking forward to some quiet time with Mrs. Claus,” Santa said. “I want everybody to be happy this year at Christmas, with a lot of love in the world. That is what Santa wants.”

The enforcement assignments began Wednesday and will be scheduled during unspecified “key times” through the holidays, the news release states.

Due to the increase in

drunken driving-related fatalities around the holidays each year, law enforcement agencies across the country will actively search for and arrest drunken drivers for the rest of the month, according to the release.

St. Charles police join the Illinois Department of Transportation, Illinois State Police and other law enforcement agencies nationwide to spread the message of “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.”

Officers also will focus on seat belt violations to empha-

size the importance of buckling up to save lives, the release states.

The St. Charles Police Department reminds residents to celebrate responsibly during the holidays. Those who plan to drink alcohol at holiday parties or at restaurants should hand their car keys over to a sober friend, take a taxi or use public transportation, according to the release.

Joanne was involved with the parent-teacher organizations at Louise White and Hoover Wood schools while her daughter, Samantha, and her sons, Tyler and Blake, were of elementary-school age.

Joanne Spitz was named the 2015 Batavia Citizen of the Year. The Batavia Chamber of Commerce will honor Spitz on Jan. 29 at the Inspire 2016: A Celebration of Those Who Inspire Us! awards event.

Once they became older, Spitz looked for other volunteer opportunities. This led her to the Batavia Foundation for Educational Excellence, which she joined as a board member in 2007.

Spitz currently is the foundation’s vice chairman and is in her third and final threeyear board term. She served as foundation chairman for three other years and co-

chaired the popular Bulldogs Unleashed program that benefited the education foundation as well as the Batavia Library and Batavia Park District foundations.

Spitz is a founder of the Batavia Bicycle Commission, the Batavia Public School Hall of Honor and a co-founder of CHIP IN Batavia, or Community Helpers Impacting People in Need, with Me-

linda Kintz, the current executive director for Batavia United Way. “In the past three years, Joanne has built CHIP IN into an organization that is envied by other area school districts,” Kintz stated in the release. “She is willing to drop everything when she learns of a need.”

Spitz credits her parents for teaching her how to volunteer.

“I am the youngest of three, and my mom was a stay-athome mom and volunteered a lot,” Spitz stated in the release. “She is 85 and still goes to her granddaughter’s school to read to the students.”

Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke said Spitz was an excellent choice for the Citizen of the Year honor.

“She isn’t one to merely talk about a problem, she jumps in and helps where she sees the need, which I think sets her apart from a lot of other folks,” Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke stated in the release.

BATAVIA – A woman who has made a career of volunteering has been named the 2015 Batavia Citizen of the Year, according to a news release.

The Batavia Chamber of Commerce will honor Joanne Spitz on Jan. 29 at the chamber’s Inspire 2016: A Celebration of Those Who Inspire Us! annual awards event.

Spitz described the news that she had been selected as overwhelming, the release states. “[This means] the most to me because everything I’ve done is for Batavia,” Spitz stated in the release. “This is where I really do belong.”

As a resident of Batavia since the early 1990s, Spitz began her active volunteer career with Batavia Public School District 101 at Louise White Elementary School when her daughter, Samantha, was a student there.

‘Twas the night before Christmas There’s something about Christmas Eve that can be described only as magical. It makes the day before Christmas just as special as the holiday itself, and builds anticipation for all the joy of the following morning. Children set out cookies for Santa Claus and listen for the telltale clip-clop of reindeer hooves on the roof. Families gather together to eat a delicious meal and exchange some early gifts around the tree. If we’re lucky, snow gently falls and coats everything in a pristine blanket of white, contributing to the idyllic feel of the evening. And as twinkling lights illuminate the darkness, I’m reminded of the incredible hope and peace that come with the Christmas season.

There’s so much commotion in the months surrounding Christmas that the holidays can become more chaotic than calming. We rush around to find that perfect gift for a loved one, devote hours to decorating and stress about coordinating holiday plans with friends and family. Christmas Eve is the point where all the hustle and bustle evaporates, leaving the peace of one of the most special nights of the year.

We’re able to put consumerism and chaos aside and take time to reflect on the true meaning of the holiday season. There’s something about being surrounded by those we love and participating in beloved traditions that puts any worries to rest, hopefully leaving only beauty and tranquility.

For me, nothing proves this more than sitting in my church’s Christmas Eve service with my family. The music is worshipful; the message is impactful; and as I sit at First Baptist Church of Geneva, I’m reminded of how my faith gives a deeper meaning to the holiday season. It’s a chance for me to spend some valuable time with my parents and sisters

And what does Christmas mean to me? It’s a difficult question to answer, because my perspective of the meaning of Christmas has changed and developed from year to year. When I was younger, I was unable to see past its concrete aspects; Christmas was solely a time for presents and decorations. But as I’ve grown older, I’ve started to understand the abstract side of the holiday, discovering the emotions and community connected to Christmas. Now, Christmas is more than a pretty package or an elaborate lights display. For me, personally, it represents a baby born in a manger over 2,000 years ago, the very embodiment of hope and peace. And I think we can all agree that the Christmas season shows the power of love to unite people and inspire generosity.

So, perhaps tonight – Christmas Eve 2015 – instead of rushing headlong toward the gifts and food, I’ll try to hold onto the magic for a little longer. No other day expresses the beauty of the holiday season – or its true meaning – quite like Christmas Eve does. And, for that, I will always look forward to the day before Christmas just as much as the holiday itself.

Congress should care more about reforming the IMF BLOOMBERG VIEW The elephantine spending bill just passed by the U.S. Congress includes, among its numberless provisions, a measure that’s shamefully overdue.

Since 2010, Washington’s paralysis has blocked badly needed changes at the International Monetary Fund. The bill will let them go forward.

This is good news. It serves U.S. – as well as global – interests. But the protracted delay draws attention to a deeper problem, still unresolved: Rather than lead the IMF in its vital work, the U.S. continues to settle for the role of glum bystander.

Five years ago, IMF members agreed, among other things, to increase the fund’s financial resources and rebalance countries’ voting power – mainly shifting votes

from Europe and giving more say to big emerging economies, notably China.

Congressional approval was needed, and this is only now being granted.

(A further review of quotas was due in 2014, by the way. That’s still stalled.)

An effective IMF is an essential tool in promoting global economic stability. It can support governments that lose access to financial markets, demanding fiscal and other reforms in return. It’s also a forum for international policy coordination and analysis. These roles assume enormous importance in times of global systemic stress. Its record isn’t flawless, and further changes are needed, but nobody who’s given it a moment’s thought questions the fund’s necessity.

The U.S., out of negligence rather than calculation, has said it isn’t much

interested in having an up-to-date IMF and can’t be bothered to recognize the new standing of China and other big, emerging economies. The sum of Washington’s thinking on the IMF is, in effect: “Who cares?”

Doesn’t the spending bill put this right, finally?

Better late than never?

That would be generous.

Buried along with who knows what else in the mammoth bill, the IMF provisions have not been properly debated or explained to voters. The case for an effective, adequately resourced and well-run IMF is compelling – and the U.S. government should be making it.

Reforming the IMF by stealth, after prolonged delay, is better than not doing it all. For its own sake, and everybody else’s, the U.S. should aim a bit higher than that.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Geneva couple launches Bright Angel Wines

Five years ago, Patrick and Robbin Pipp of Geneva went to celebrate not just Patrick Pipp’s 50th birthday, but also the couple’s 25th anniversary.

After visiting and falling in love with Napa Valley, Calif. – particularly the wineries and vineyards – they continued to go back. Eventually, the couple thought of a way they could do more with wine.

Before they knew it, Bright Angel Wines was born. On Sept. 15, their wine was available for purchase.

“We’ve had so much support from the local community and are just really proud of what this has grown into,” Patrick Pipp said. “Twenty-two years ago, when we moved here, we were the only house on our street, so we’ve had great relationships with the community before this.”

“We had always loved wine, attending tastings and things,” Robbin Pipp said.

“But going to Napa together to celebrate, everything that we did really sparked our wanting to go into a business to further our love for it.”

In terms of the how the business works, the Pipps did research and found a “custom crush” facility. Such a facility works to help others with the wine production process.

The Pipps found the Wine Foundry in Napa Valley.

“The reason we selected the Wine Foundry is because they have great relationships with some of best farmers in California,” Patrick Pipp said. “We felt like – if we wanted to make wine – we wanted to make really good wine. And really good wine starts with really good grapes. So, we wanted to work with someone who works with farmers that harvest really good

grapes. That was the Wine Foundry.”

Once they select grapes, the wine is stored to age, and is eventually blended.

Patrick Pipp said the wine can take up to four hours to blend, but once they get the wine they like, it is bottled and eventually stored – or shipped to Geneva.

Currently, there are two wines available for purchase – the 2013 Santa Rita Hills Chardonnay and 2013 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon – both of which the Pipps market through their brightangelwines.com website and through business events and home parties at their Geneva house. As of last week, SavWay Fine Wines and Spirits in Geneva started carry-

ing its first bottles of Bright Angel wines.

The two Bright Angel wines currently available for purchase each have particular tastes, but Patrick Pipp said he feels that both really stretch to cover a broad palette, noting that a wide range of people will enjoy the wines.

The company’s name, Bright Angel Wines, comes from the Grand Canyon’s Bright Angel Trail, which the Pipp family has hiked, calling it their favorite family vacation.

Patrick Pipp also said he felt the name resonated with people, as the words “bright” and “angel” have positive meanings. Speaking of words, Patrick Pipp said the business prides itself not only on having “the best of the best” when it comes to choosing grapes for wines, but also the company motto.

“Our motto is, ‘Be Inspired. Celebrate Success.’” Patrick Pipp said. “Throughout

our lives, we have been inspired by people around us that have helped us or our family, and so we wanted our wine to kind of be celebrations of those things. We felt we produced a good, quality wine that people would enjoy when they are celebrating those successes.”

Each Bright Angel wine label incorporates a map of the Bright Angel Trail and has an inspirational message on it, which the couple felt was a unique trait that most wines do not have. For their future wines, they have found that interaction through social media and events has been positive, so customers will be able to submit inspirational messages for future wine bottles.

There’s a lot that goes into the business behind the scenes for Patrick and Robbin Pipp, but the two could not be more excited to continue taking visits to make wine and to grow their business.

By STEVE BOURBON editorial@kcchronicle.com AURORA – “You can’t win ’em all” is a classic sports cliché that manages to stick around, but don’t spread the message to the Marmion wrestling team.

The host Cadets compiled a 3-1 record Wednesday during a quadrangular meet, yet athletes and coaches alike weren’t pleased with the outcome.

While Marmion looked invulnerable in victories against Metea Valley (62-9), Batavia (70-6) and West Aurora (63-15), the Cadets couldn’t string together any momentum against Washington and dropped the dual, 31-24.

“We let a couple get away from us against Washington, but other than that, we wrestled pretty well,” Marmion coach Donny Reynolds said.

“Obviously give them credit.

They were the better team today, with the lineup today. I don’t like making excuses; we didn’t get the job done.”

In what was easily the most intense dual of the day, seemingly every individual match came down to the final buzzer, with the Panthers clinching the match in a 5-4 victory at 152 pounds.

Both benches were on their feet during critical points in the match, and shouts and cheers echoed around Marmion’s Alumni Hall gymnasium.

“I thought we underperformed, which is a terrible feeling. We’ve got a lot of work to do,” Cadets 132-pounder AJ Jaffe said. “We came in thinking that we could beat them and they proved us wrong today. It was a heated battle, but we gave up a lot of matches that we should have won and lost a lot of positions that we should’ve won.”

Against the Bulldogs, who defeated West Aurora (48-27) and Metea Valley (39-38) to go 2-1, Marmion’s grapplers were nearly perfect. The Cadets recorded pins in 10 of the 14 bouts while cruising to victory.

It was a long day for everyone involved, and maintaining endurance throughout the five-hour event was key to success. Just two days before Christmas and well into winter break from school, both Bayer and Reynolds said their squads were banged up as the teams are in the grind of the

season.

“It’s easy to get checked out. We’re definitely a wounded animal right now,” Bayer said.

While the holidays are nearing on the calendar, there will be no rest for these wrestlers. The Cadets have another dual on Monday before heading to Rochester, Minnesota, for a two-day tournament to kick off 2016.

Needless to say, the squad is eager to get back on the mat to improve on Wednesday’s performance.

“You obviously can’t win them all, but we should’ve won this one today,” Marmion’s Trace Carello said. “It was just a poor effort. I think we wrestled well in the other duals, but we didn’t wrestle well when we needed to. That’s something we need to work on.”

The Knights (11-1) not only held Yorkville (11-1) to a season-low 33 points, but they put a stop to the Foxes’ 11game winning streak by holding them scoreless in the final 4:49 of the contest.

“I’m really proud of the way the kids played. We really got to their shooters,” Kaneland coach Ernie Colombe said. “Yorkville can hit 3s in bunches – we’ve seen that all year from them when we’ve scouted them. I’m sure a little of that was our defense and a little bit of that was catching them on an off night.

We’ll take it.”

Another big highlight for the Knights came when senior Camri Conley was named MVP of the tournament. She finished with 12 points against Yorkville. Senior Bailey Crimmins was also named to the all-tournament team.

The fourth and final tie of the game was after Yorkville’s Erica Cyko scored a basket that knotted the contest at 33-all. After that, Kaneland closed it out on a 9-0 run led by free throws from Vanessa Gould, Conley and Jenni Weber.

Steel’s Parsells hails from Cougars’ homeland

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com As the Cougars hailed their 25th anniversary season in Geneva in 2015, Wausau, Wisconsin, not so triumphantly observed a quarter century without Midwest League baseball.

Steel defenseman Adam Parsells was born in Wausau about six years after his hometown Timbers Adam p l a y e d t h e i r Parsells final game before moving to the Fox Valley.

Another relocation has placed Parsells that much closer to his would-be boyhood ballclub.

The Steel’s shift from The Edge Ice Arena in Bensenville to Fox Valley Ice Arena in Geneva this past summer gave the Cougars a new neighbor along the Kirk Road corridor.

“I’ve seen the stadium,” Parsells said. “It looks really nice. … If I get a chance, I’d like to go watch them. I love baseball.”

Logistically, that’s doable.

The Cougars are set to open the 2016 season against visiting Clinton at 6:30 p.m. April 7, one night before the Steel host Muskegon.

With the USHL regular season concluding April 10, that might be Parsells’ best chance to see a game at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark, unless the Steel make the playoffs or he elects to stay in town. The Cougars welcome Cedar Rapids, which also has a USHL franchise, for a three-game series from April 11 to 13.

Two of those games are midweek Ozzie’s Reading Club Day matinées. Parsells could feasibly be back in Wausau for a late dinner if there were no extra innings and he avoided gridlock.

Catching a game in the summer figures to be a dicier proposition for Parsells, 18. For one, the 6-foot-6, 192-pounder is a self-described homebody.

For another, he is under control of the San Jose Sharks, who selected him in the sixth round of the NHL Entry Draft

in June, and a camp or workout could come calling.

“I try not to think about being drafted or going to college or anything like that,” said Parsells, also a Wisconsin commit. “I try to just focus on playing for the Steel and doing anything I can for them.”

Those latter thoughts – at least during pregame – frequently feature Parsells’ parents, who have traveled to see a majority of his games since he arrived in a trade from Green Bay in mid-October.

Parsells, who played baseball at Wausau West High School in addition to shining on the ice, often nods to his father, Greg, who aspired to a professional baseball career growing up.

“My dad will usually whistle to me,” Parsells said. “I’ll look for him in the stands. But once it’s game time, I try to keep my head inside the glass.”

‘Rosie’ returns: Class-A Cubs prospects called Geneva home during a two-year player-development contract from 2013 to 2014, and were frequent Cougars foes as Western Division rivals with Peoria for several seasons before that.

When the Cubs left the Cougars for South Bend of the Eastern Division in September 2014, however, it meant wouldbe North Siders only would travel to Fifth Third Bank Ballpark every other season.

The first occurrence since the switch comes from July 16 to 18, when the re-nicknamed South Bend Cubs visit.

It’s too soon to tell whether any former Cougars will suit up for South Bend during that series, but the Cubs will bring a familiar face on their field staff. Pitching coach David Rosario served the Cougars in the same capacity during the 2014 MWL championship season and carries 11 years of coaching experience in the Cubs system.

Last week, Cougars general manager Curtis Haug said the club expected the parent Arizona Diamondbacks to finalize their 2016 minor league field staffs soon. Haug said it was unlikely 2015 manager Mark Grudzielanek would return.

Dear Dr. K: I have osteoarthritis that’s gotten worse over the past few years. My doctor has explained the pros and cons of knee replacement, but it seems like the timing is up to me. How will I know when the time is right to replace my joint?

Dear Reader: If your experience with a knee replacement is like that of most of my patients, you’ll know when the time is right only after the time has passed. I’ve rarely met a person who had a knee or a hip replacement who did not say, after the surgery, “I should have had the surgery long before I finally did.”

That surely was my experience with hip replacement due to osteoarthritis.

Looking back, I should have had the surgery at least two years before I did.

It’s a simple question to ask yourself: Are other, non-surgical treatments giving you enough relief?

Or despite the treatments, are you having to restrict your life in ways that make you unhappy? No one likes to face surgery, so you can kid yourself that your life is not restricted that badly and postpone considering surgery.

For me, it suddenly became clear after years of denial. I was on a vacation in a wonderful city, and I wanted to spend several hours walking. But after a few blocks, my hip hurt so much that I just couldn’t.

That was the moment I said to myself: Enough is enough.

Dear Abby: My 7-year-old daughter, “Rosie,” recently came home in tears because a classmate, “Emily,” told her I was a liar and she was an idiot for believing my lies.

Then Rosie asked me if I had been the one putting money under her pillow and presents under the tree all along.

Ultimately, I told her that, yes, I had. But I stressed how important it was that she not ruin other kids’ belief in the tooth fairy, etc.

The cat is out of the bag for my child, but do you think I should mention this to Emily’s mother?

We are friendly, but not close. She lives near me, so I run into her often. I’m not just upset that Emily told Rosie, but also that she was so rude. I don’t want that girl to do this to more kids.

South is in three no-trump, and West leads his fourth-highest heart. If you were declarer, how would you plan the play?

In the auction, South’s redouble promised at least 10 high-card points.

Next, note West’s one-heart advance.

From the logic of the auction, he was known to hold a very weak hand. He was right to bid because he had a definite preference among the three unbid suits.

South’s one-no-trump rebid showed 10-12 points. North, adding one point for his good five-card suit, jumped to game.

South starts with only three top tricks: one heart and two clubs. He can establish four winners in diamonds and three in spades, but that involves losing the lead twice, and he might concede those two aces and three hearts.

The key decision is this: How many hearts did West start with? If four, South must win the first trick and go about his business. If five, declarer must duck the first trick and duck the second heart trick before driving out those aces, which must be held by East.

It is a guess, but West is more likely to have five than four because he bid the suit. With only four, he might have passed over the redouble to let his partner choose a suit. But it is close.

Company’s coming. So are spills, stains and other minor entertaining disasters of the season. So we consulted with a cleaning expert on five common stains of the holiday hosting season.

Bridget Bodoano, author of the new book “A Spotless Home,” seemed like the perfect person to dish on the topic. Her book promises “the lowdown on all those useful cheats and tricks” that make cleaning less of a timeconsuming chore. Bodoano, who is also a designer and illustrator, said she wanted to provide simple, timeproven solutions for the well-being and cleanliness of homes. “Some young people have never learned much about keeping house or cleaning,” Bodoano said. “There’s a lot to learn about loving your home and looking after it.”

Here’s one tip from her

book: Invest in some good cloths. Many cleaning chores require a clean cloth that can stand up to rubbing and give a bit of friction. She suggests absorbent cloths with natural fibers. You can create a stack of these yourself by cutting up old towels, sheets or T-shirts.

These can live on as “good, general wipers-down and moppers-up.”

So get your cloths ready and read about some scenarios that could happen in your home as you toast to Christmas or the new year. Bodoano recently spoke with us from her very clean one-bedroom flat in London.
