Ringing bells to brighten the holiday season KANELAND CONNECTION Al Lagattolla ELBURN – The woman was leaving Jewel in Elburn, smiling and wishing me a merry Christmas. I was wearing a red smock identifying me as collecting for The Salvation Army, manning a Christmas kettle and ringing a bell.

She took a few steps and stopped. She looked back and saw a man put some money in the kettle, and then she walked toward the red kettle, dollar in hand.

“OK, you got me,” she said before dropping the dollar into the kettle.

It was one of many special moments that I’ve been able

to enjoy so far this year during my experience as a bell ringer for The Salvation Army. It’s something I’m able to do a few times each year in Elburn, and I’ll have one more opportunity, from 9 a.m. to noon today in front of Ream’s Elburn Market, 128 N. Main St., Elburn.

It’s become a Christmas tradition for me each year, and at this point it wouldn’t feel like the holiday season if I wasn’t able to spend a few hours in front of Ream’s on Christmas Eve. The generosity of shoppers on that day is amazing, and there always is a kind of happiness surrounding the task.

At the beginning of this year’s campaign, Alfrey told us the kettles produced a record $7,700 last year. That’s a big deal because she said that allows the organization to help needy local families pay for rent, heat, food, clothing and other necessities.

At every shift, at least one person stops to just say thanks for doing it. That is a nice gesture. I’m also appreciative of the families, in which several kids line up, each with a donation. It’s good to get the family into the spirit.

Christmas Eve snowstorm expected in Kane County

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch that is in effect from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Christmas Eve. According to the latest forecast, snow, possi-

bly mixed with rain, will become all snow after 3 p.m., with the potential for heavy snow at times.

Kane County could receive 3 to 7 inches of snow, National Weather Service meteorologist Bill Nelson said.

“It will be in a relatively short period, but intense,” Nelson said. “It is just bad

Illness prompts SG trustee’s resignation

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Bob Bohler has made the difficult decision to resign from the Sugar Grove Village Board.

Bohler first won a seat on the board 17 years ago.

Bohler, 64, is terminally ill with cancer. Although he said he felt fine Monday, he said, “I don’t want to leave the board hanging.”

Village President Sean Michels said he understands why Bohler is resigning, and he said thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.

“It’s sad all the way around,” Michels said. “Bob’s health is failing, so that’s no good, and he’s served the village with a lot of passion over the last 17 years. We’ll miss

his opinions and insight into the village.”

Voters first elected Bohler to the board in 1997 after he lost the previous election by only a few votes. Michels commended him for his perseverance.

“He worked hard, and he didn’t let a little setback of losing the first election to throw him off,” Michels said.

Bohler said he feels honored to have been elected to five terms.

“I think I’ve had a successful career,” he said, noting the new businesses and developments Sugar Grove has welcomed in that time. “We’ve come so far in the village.”

Bohler was last elected in 2013. Michels said he will appoint someone to serve the remainder of the term.

Elburn announces 24/7 payment option

The village on Dec. 16 began using GovPayNet, a private company that serves government agencies and its residents by processing credit and debit card payments, according to the company’s website.

Customers for the first time can pay for their village bills online, said Doug Elder, the village’s finance director. GovPayNet processed about 20 payments during its first few days of use in the village, Elder said.

Customers take note: A service charge is applied for all credit card transactions, Elder said.

The charges are tiered and under two different categories – online and in person is one, and the other is through the toll-free number, Elder said.

To avoid service fees, customers can make cash and check payments when the village hall is open, Elder said.

The material items themselves would not be considered bad, the Rev. Bob Jones, pastor of St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Church in Sugar Grove, said. After all, Jones said, everything that God created is good. But it is the materialism, the thought that material possessions would be more important than spiritual values, that would be discouraged.

That is part of Jones’ Christmas message. It is a significant day for churches throughout the area, and several pastors shared a portion of what they intend to say to their parishioners during the season.

Jones added he will talk about how Jesus was born into poverty, a contrast compared to powerful and rich kings of the time. However, he said the world during this time of year will remember “Christ the king.”

“He is the one who has endured through time,” Jones said, adding “that is why we call him the king of kings.”

Jones also said he will talk about how “God is with us.”

“God does love us,” Jones said. “In the midst of all of the pain and uncertainty in the world, when it might seem that he is far away. … He suffers with us.”

Paul Sommerfeld, the lead pastor at Riverside Community Church in St. Charles, said he will speak about the historical account of Christmas, as a rescue mission. He

He talked of two great rescues in the Bible. The first, he said, was in the Old Testament, in which God rescues his people from oppression and slavery in Egypt, citing Exodus 3:8. He said that is prophetic and looking forward to the second great rescue, from the bondage through sin, citing Colossians 1:13, on a rescue “from the dominion of darkness” to be brought “into the kingdom of the son he loves.”

“Christmas is this amaz-

ing story of God coming down to rescue mankind from the power of sin,” Sommerfeld said.

At St. Charles Episcopal Church, the Rev. William Nesbit said he plans to talk about how 2014 has been “a year of anger.”

He mentioned recent events, including the shooting of two police officers in New York “who had nothing to do” with other police actions that have caused protests throughout the nation.

“We just need to take a step back and to remember we are all in need of God’s love and all need to treat each other with a little respect and love and forgiveness,” Nesbit said.

He also spoke of the song, “O Little Town of Bethlehem,” and its final verse, which includes “descend to us, we pray. Cast out our sins and enter in. Be born to us today.”

“I think that’s the core of the Christmas story,” Nesbit said, adding that “we need to be open to God growing in us … to be able to say, God, what will you have me do this day?”

Pastor Dave Mann of St. Charles Free Methodist Church said that on Christmas, he will focus on the Easter story, to remind people that “there is a purpose to the coming of the Christ and the Messiah.”

St. Charles hotels, nonprofits partner for Year of the Scarecrow campaign KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – Fifteen organizations – including five nonprofits and nine hotels – have partnered to celebrate the Year of the Scarecrow, the Greater St. Charles Convention and Visitors Bureau announced in a news release.

Launched at this year’s Scarecrow Fest, the yearlong marketing campaign aims to promote St. Charles to visitors regionally and nationally as the festival prepares to celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2015.

The festival is set for the weekend of Oct. 9.

The visitor bureau’s nonprofit partners are the Downtown St. Charles Partnership, Camp Kane Heritage Foundation, Festival of the Horse and Drum, Fine Line Creative Arts Center and the St. Charles Park District.

According to the release, programming offered by the organizations include a scarecrow-centric entry in the Downtown St. Charles Partnership’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade and a custom-created scarecrow quilt that will be auctioned to benefit Lurie

Children’s Hospital of Chicago, which is part of the Children’s Miracle Network.

The participating hotels – Country Inn & Suites, Courtyard by Marriott, Fairfield Inn & Suites, Geneva Motel Inn, Hampton Inn & Suites, Hilton Garden Inn, Hotel Baker, Pheasant Run Resort and Quality Inn & Suites – will offer special Year of the Scarecrow rates for guests calling for reservations, the release states.

One dollar from each hotel room used by a Year of the Scarecrow guest will be donated to Lurie Children’s

Hospital, according to the release.

“We integrated a charity component into this yearlong campaign as another way to celebrate the family-friendly brand of Scarecrow Fest,” Amy Egolf, visitors bureau executive director, stated in the release.

“Over the last 30 years, the fest has touched thousands of children and become an autumn tradition for families across the Midwest. We are proud to have a ‘give back’ opportunity to help support a nationally recognized charity, such as the Children’s

The Batavia Park District has been recognized as an Illinois Distinguished Accredited Agency by the Illinois Association of Park Districts and the Illinois Park and Recreation Association. The goal of distinguished accreditation is to improve park and recreation services in the state of Illinois.

The program provides an opportunity for agencies across the state to go through a comprehensive evaluation process in an effort to show how they are meeting state guidelines and providing exceptional services within their community.

“Illinois has a reputation for the best park districts, forest preserves, conservation and special recreation agencies in the nation,” said Peter Murphy, IAPD president and CEO. “The Illinois distinguished accreditation program provides an opportunity for these agencies to undergo a voluntary, comprehensive evaluation process with the end result being to improve the quality of life for Illinois residents.”

The distinguished accreditation review is a lengthy, detailed process. A Joint Distinguished Park and Recreation Accreditation Committee – or JDPRAC – comprised of members from the IAPD and IPRA coordinates the process. Agencies then submit a

self-evaluation and a request letter to begin the process. The committee then determines eligibility and sets an evaluation date. The committee held the Batavia Park District’s evaluation Oct. 22, which included a review of all documented information and a tour of the district’s parks and facilities.

“This program gives recognition to park and recreation agencies that go above and beyond in dedicating themselves to offering quality programs and services designed to fulfill their community’s needs,” said Debbie Trueblood, IPRA executive director. The committee reviews general management procedures, finance and business operations, facilities and parks, personnel, recreation services, legal documentation and other materials, including mission statements, goals and safety manuals.

Upon completion of the evaluation, the agency is notified in writing of the official results.

Agencies that have achieved “Distinguished Accredited” status are recognized in front of nearly 4,000 colleagues at the IAPD/IPRA annual conference awards luncheon in January.

“There are tremendous benefits for an agency that achieves ‘Distinguished Accredited’ status,” said Bill McAdam, IPRA co-chair of the JDPRAC. “The agency’s application and review process is an excellent self-evaluation, and agencies that apply realize increased operational efficiency and effectiveness. Kane County Sheriff’s Office warns 9 against ‘playing along’ with scammers

Gengler wrote that scammers usually will get what they can up front and will never make an in-person meeting, especially at a place where there is high-quality video surveillance.

“These scammers are very good at what they do and normally do it from the comfort of their own homes, which lessens their exposure to being caught,” Gengler wrote.

The resident reportedly received subsequent phone calls about winning a BMW but was told he needed to provide $300 for delivery. The man reportedly told the caller no, but the caller persisted and called about eight to 10 times on Dec. 18. The man told police he didn’t pick up.

ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – Four teenagers in custody at the Juvenile Justice Center face additional charges after a fight that broke out in the gym, according to a Kane County Sheriff’s Office report.

The gang-related fight reportedly happened about 6:30 p.m. Dec. 14 during a recreation session. The fight, which involved several juveniles, started when one teen punched another in the face, police reported.

Lt. Pat Gengler wrote in an email that such fights aren’t that common at the

center, which is at 37W655 Route 38 in St. Charles Township.

“It is more common for one-on-one altercations,” he wrote. “This is definitely out of the ordinary.”

The juveniles – two 17-year-olds and two 18-year-olds – were charged with mob action and aggravated battery, Gengler wrote.

One of the 18-year-olds also was charged with aggravated battery to a staff member, he wrote.

He wrote that the youth home employee did not need medical attention, but two other juveniles received treatment at Delnor Hospital in Geneva.

ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – A St. Charles Township resident recently “played along” with a scam intending to prevent others from being victims – something authorities warn against, according to the Kane County Sheriff’s Office.

“While admirable, he could be potentially opening himself up for some sort of additional identity theft situation,” Lt. Pat Gengler wrote in an email.

According to a sheriff’s office report, a resident of the 5N900 block of Westwood Lane received a call Dec. 16 from someone purporting to be affiliated with the publication “Consumer Reports.”

St. Charles mulls rules for BYOB businesses

CHARLES – The St. Charles Liquor Commission in January will continue discussions about increasing regulations for businesses that allow customers to bring their own beer or alcohol through their doors, St. Charles Police Chief James Keegan wrote Tuesday in an email.

Keegan first presented the proposed regulations for businesses that offer BYOB – bring your own beer – to the Liquor Commission on Dec. 15.

The proposed rules include two new annual liquor licenses – a $100 license for BYOB establishments that only allow beer and wine only, and a $250 license for establishments that would allow spirits

in addition to beer and wine.

The proposal also lists specific guidelines, such as securing open alcohol, in tamper proof bags before leaving a BYOB restaurant.

The St. Charles Police Department and city staff developed the revisions to address scenarios – such as BYOB – that are not already specifically addressed by the city and state.

“This is an ongoing effort to revise and improve our ordinances and liquor provisions/regulations,” Keegan wrote in the email.

E&S Fish Company, 311 N. 2nd St., and Liu Brothers Bistro, 1554 E. Main St., both in St. Charles, are two restaurants in St. Charles that allow customers to bring their own wine and beer to dinner.

Businesses that currently offer BYOB and have no other liquor licenses are not required to have staff with BASSET certification, but it would be required under the current proposal, Keegan wrote.

Basset stands for Beverage Alcohol Sellers and Servers Education and Training that employees take to learn how to serve alcohol responsibly.

Keegan wrote that the regulations are still in the discussion phase at this time. The proposal next has to advance to a city council committee before a final vote by all 10 aldermen.

“There might be a couple of modifications and recommendations moving forward,” Keegan wrote in the email.

“We have yet to have our legal team work on this.”

Seniors, disabled residents can sign up for rides for medical appointments

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Seniors and disabled residents in Sugar Grove Township who need a ride to the doctor’s office now can take advantage of a new transportation service.

The new program allows seniors age 65 and older, along with those residents with disabilities, to schedule rides for medical appointments be-

tween 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Sugar Grove Township and Aurora Township recently approved an intergovernmental agreement, paving the way for the program.

The program already had been in place in Aurora Township as part of Pace Suburban Bus Service’s Ride in Kane program. Sugar Grove Township Supervisor Tom Rowe said the new agreement extends transportation services

for seniors and disabled residents in Sugar Grove Township to all area hospitals and medical clinics.

So far, the response to the new program has been slow.

“Only four Sugar Grove Township residents have registered for the service,” Rowe said Monday. “We’re trying to get the word out. We’re hoping things will pick up next year.”

Residents who want to participate in the program must

first call the Aurora Township office at 630-892-1999.

Rowe said he is encouraging people to register right away, even though they might not be using the program for a while.

The cost is $4 a ride within a 10-mile radius and $1.50 per additional mile.

A companion may ride along for free.

“It’s curb-to-curb service,” Rowe said. “They come right to your home and pick you up at the edge of your driveway.”

Why Obama was smiling before his holiday break

By MARGARET CARLSON Bloomberg News The headline out of Friday’s news conference was the president was happy.

Barack Obama’s post-midterm-election scowl was gone, replaced by the wide smile that once charmed the country. Emerging from his bunker, he blithely engaged reporters (all of them women), calling out a “bless you,” when he heard a sneeze.

The news conference took place after some real and surprising post-election gains: a climate deal with China, an executive order protecting five million undocumented immigrants, a ruling on ozone emissions from the Environmental Protection Agency,

a budget deal that kept the government open and the historic restoration of diplomatic relations with Cuba. He sent Sony Pictures a stern message that it was wrong to pull “The Interview” because a North Korean dictator, who dresses like Johnny Cash and wears a porcupine on his head, had made some empty threats.

Maybe Obama was just in a holiday mood knowing he’d soon be winging it home to Hawaii for a Christmas vacation with the family, whose company he prefers to all others’. Each year, we swear Scrooge’s oath to keep the holiday in our hearts year round. That’s hard enough for anyone, let alone a guy with Obama’s headaches, but perhaps Friday

was a dress rehearsal for the months ahead. In the midst of responding to the reporters’ questions there was a quiet moment when he stopped to acknowledge to reporters in the room that neither he nor they spend enough time with loved ones. That’s an Obama you wouldn’t mind seeing more of.

There’s no guide to presidential happiness, although bookshelves groan with advice for the rest of us. Stay close to siblings; have a best friend; spend money on activities not things; get a dog.

Americans don’t much care if their presidents are happy except when they’re running for office, when surveys show we prefer the candidate we’d like to have a beer with. We might

even be suspicious of a cheerful chief executive. What’s so funny? We sleep better at night knowing your hair is turning gray with worry.

On the other hand, we know that happy’s close cousins, optimism and resilience, are essential to getting things done. Obama allowed that there had been problems such as Ebola and children crossing the border that “may not get fixed in the time frame of the news cycle,” but that eventually do get fixed.

“When we work together, we can’t be stopped.”

That’s a better approach than pounding your fist on a table or your head against a wall. Presidents have suffered from polarized capitals since before Obama arrived,

indeed, since before he was born. Ronald Reagan, both Bushes and Bill Clinton were all backslappers to varying degrees – all reached across the aisle and all ended up relying on their own parties to get things done. Modern presidents have to accept going it alone.

On Friday, there was a glimpse of the genial charisma that charmed the country (enough of it anyway) to elect a first-term senator to the presidency. If Obama could get back in touch with that, his remaining two years in office could be a gift to all. As Scrooge reminds us, it’s never too late to change.

But this baby would get more attention than horses, knights, bands and kings. He was the King of kings and Lord of lords. He was the Creator and the God-human who comes incognito as Savior of us all.

This Christmas why not consider being your own “personal Bethlehem,” where Jesus is spiritually born within you?

Looking to turn around their recent six-game-losing-streak, the Knights tipped off their tournament run at the 52nd annual Plano Christmas Classic on Tuesday with a 67-53 win against Indian Creek.

Kaneland advances to face third-seeded Burlington Central on Friday while Indian Creek will face Seneca in consolation play.

Indian Creek (6-5) got off to a strong start because of senior guard Drew Winterton, who scored seven straight points.

The Knights didn’t crack the scoreboard until the 4:15 mark in the first quarter after a Ryan David jumper.

But Kaneland (2-6) fought to a 15-12 first-quarter lead and continued building momentum as the game unfolded.

“I thought besides the first few possessions to start off the game, we really upped our energy,” Knights coach Brian Johnson said. “We’ve got to be a high-energy team, otherwise we struggle to score.”

A host of Knights helped build their lead, and point guard Mark Lilly earned a few “oohs and ahhs” from the crowd with his crisp passes and ball-handling skills.

“Mark Lilly did a nice job creating for his teammates, and getting them in positions so they could score. I thought that was huge for us,” Johnson said.

But Indian Creek’s shooting, especially from Winterton, helped the Timberwolves keep it a two-point difference heading into the locker room at the half, 31-29. Winterton shot 6 of 8 in the first half to lead all scorers with 16 points. Winterton finished with a game-high 25.

“The first shot went down, and after that, I was open; my teammates gave me the ball. The defense was good to start the game, so it led to good offense,” Winterton said.

Winterton continued to flash the hot hand, drilling a 3-pointer on the first possession of the third quarter, but a combination of forced turnovers and Kaneland’s David and Jacob Gomes collaborated for 14 points in the quarter to build the Knights’ lead to 56-44 heading into the final period.

“I thought we had a good effort. We had too many lapses in the third quarter where we weren’t challenging many shots in the defensive end, and then had some costly turnovers,” Indian Creek coach Joe Piekarz said. “We settled in a little bit, but at that point, [the lead] got up to 15 points or so.”

Indian Creek clawed within nine with 2:28 remaining but Kaneland’s continued defensive prowess ultimately sealed the deal.

David Gomes (19 points), Jacob Gomes (13) and Connor Fedderly (13) paced the Knights’ offense.

While both Kaneland and Indian Creek can enjoy the upcoming holiday, they’ll be right back to work Friday as tournament play continues.

“We still have a lot of work to do,” Johnson said. “We’re going to have to guard their shooters, and match their intensity in the paint. We’ll need to handle [Central’s] aggressiveness.”

As for Indian Creek, Piekarz preached playing a full 32 minutes of basketball.

“Any team you play in this tournament, it’s so important you play that because they’ll expose you if you don’t,” he said.

“The better he gets is the better we get is the bottom line,” Woods said. “He’s gaining confidence. It’s a great opportunity for him, and he’s worked very hard.”

Joining Clodi, McQuillan and Bronec in double figures were point guard Cole Gentry (15 points) and forward Mick Vyzral (12). Gentry and Vyzral combined on a crowd-pleasing play in which Gentry saved an East steal from going out of bounds in style, with a behindthe-back pass to Vyzral, who finished for a fast-break layup.

Woods is having to reach for areas to fret over with the Saints playing so well, and for

now, that includes defense once the outcome is decided.

“The fourth quarter’s when we seem to be giving up our most points, and we’re kind of calling out the reserves on that,” Woods said. “We want to keep that defensive [points against average]. … It’s got to be a mentality that we have team-wide.”

Clodi said the Saints are prepared to close the week strong as favorites to win the tournament.

“There’s definitely some teams that have got their eye on us but we’re just going to play our game,” Clodi said. “Whoever’s next, we’ll step up and play them.”

That’ll be Glenbrook North after the Spartans owned the last 10-plus minutes of their 11-point win against Marmion.

The Cadets (5-4) led, 41-35, with about 3:30 to go in the third quarter following a Jordan Glasgow jumper.

But Glenbrook North closed the quarter on a 10-0 run to take the lead, and the Cadets came

no closer than three points during the fourth quarter.

Marmion forward Jake Esp followed up Monday’s 39-point outburst against Eisenhower in the first round with 23 more against the Spartans, 15 in the first half to help the Cadets lead, 34-29, at the break.

Esp thought the Cadets became preoccupied defensively with Glenbrook North’s Pat Hamilton (25 points).

“We were trying to help on [Hamilton] too much, and it would leave people open, and they would just find them,” Esp said.

Glasgow scored 11 for Marmion and junior guard Josh Ruddy added 10 points off the bench.

“We’re making strides,” Cadets coach Joe Currie said.

“Our chemistry’s starting to get a little more fine-tined, and that’s what we’re looking for so that come February, we’re ready to go.”

Marmion will meet Sterling (5-2) in consolation action Friday.

Saints hand Lyons first loss behind dominant 2nd-half showing WHEATON – The St. Charles East girls basketball team continues to impress in the Bill Neibch Holiday Classic at Wheaton North.

One day after blowing out host Wheaton North, the Saints topped previously unbeaten Lyons Township, 67-58, on Tuesday behind a dominant second-half showing.

The Saints (11-2) jumped out to a 22-15 lead in the first quarter, but the Lions (9-1) fought back to cut East’s lead to 36-32 going into the halftime break.

East tightening up on defense and pushing the ball in transition to negate Lyons’ stingy zone defense.

“I think we just scored quickly and I think that was key,” East coach Lori Drumtra said. “A couple things we talked about, they did a nice job of switching up defenses a lot in the first half and that slowed us down a bit. We talked about not

allowing that to slow us down, to continue to look for transition.”

This fast-paced approach quickly paid dividends. Senior point guard Katie Claussner, who finished with 17 points, cranked up the offensive tempo and consistently pressured the Lions’ defense in transition.

Claussner scored East’s first points of the quarter after snagging an offensive rebound, and she followed up on the next possession with a defensive rebound and a coast-to-coast drive that resulted in a shooting foul. Claussner split the two free throws, but the intensity that she established benefited the Saints both on offense and defensively.

While Claussner led the Saints in the third quarter with five points, she also spearheaded a defensive effort that held Lyons senior guard Gaby Galassini, who had a game-high 20 points, to just two points in the period.

“I think we switched some

people around, we stopped letting (Galassini) drive in to the basket a little bit more, Claussner said. “We stopped their 3-point shooting, they’re great 3-point shooters, but I think we shut them down in that third quarter.”

East’s adjustments on defense culminated in a 46-37 lead with one minute remaining in the third. At that point, freshman forward Sara Rosenfeldt hauled in a pair of consecutive offensive rebounds that extended the Saints’ final possession of the quarter and set up senior guard Kyra Washington’s wide-open 3-point shot to give East its first double digit lead of the game.

Lyons never threatened in the fourth quarter despite strong final efforts from Galassini and senior guard Vicki Swift, who had 18 points.

Washington (18) and Claussner (17) provided the majority of the Saints’ offensive firepower, but sophomore guard Samantha Munroe and senior

forward Chloe John each added nine points off the bench to supplement the starters.

“We’ve got a lot of options, that’s been nice,” Drumtra said. “Obviously they were keying Kyra a lot. Last night

[Wheaton North was] keying on Katie Claussner. And it’s forced a lot of players to step up.”

East will look to continue its tournament run against Glenbrook South at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

DeKALB – Having pumped in 102 points the day before, it would have been understandable for the St. Charles East boys basketball team to come out a bit lethargic in Tuesday’s Chuck Dayton Classic second-round matchup with Sterling.

And that was the case – for all of about 2 minutes.

The Saints quickly rediscovered their shooting touch and transition legs, blowing past Sterling, 89-46, for their eighth consecutive win.

“The great thing about this team is we’ve been ready to play every game,” East coach Pat Woods said. “No matter how good or bad we played in the previous game, the next game is just a clean slate and we’ve been ready to play, and that’s the key.

We won’t allow them, as coaches, to start buying into any kind of the hype.”

But make no mistake, the

hype is beginning to spread for East (10-1), the No. 1 seed in the tournament. The Saints advance to a semifinal at 8 p.m. Friday against Glenbrook North, which surged past Marmion, 67-56, in the game that followed East-Sterling.

The Saints drained nine of their 11 3-point makes for the day during the first half, when reserve guard Jake Clodi scored 16 of his game-high 18 points, including four 3-pointers.

Five Saints hit double figures scoring, not an uncommon occurrence for East’s humming offense.

“Everybody can shoot on our team, everyone can get to the basket,” said forward James McQuillan, who added 11 points. “We’re tough to stop when we’re in a rhythm. It’s fun. It’s a lot of fun out there.”

The Huskies came into Tuesday’s Boca Raton Bowl riding a seven-game winning streak and coming off their third MAC title in four years.

On Tuesday, however, NIU didn’t have what it takes to beat another one of the nation’s top Group of Five programs, as Marshall topped NIU, 52-23.

The Huskies (11-3) couldn’t keep up with the Thundering Herd’s (13-1) fast-paced attack led by quarterback Rakeem Cato.

Cato threw for 281 yards and three touchdowns. Marshall wideout Tommy Shuler had 18 catches for 185 yards and a score. Tailback Devon Johnson had 15 carries for 131 yards.

“They’re good. Like I said, I think we had the things in to stop them, I don’t think we executed to stop them,” NIU coach Rod Carey said. “They’re good players. As bad as we played in my estimation, I’m not going to sit here and make an excuse because they played well. I think they probably had one of their better nights of the season, so you give them credit on that.”

NIU quarterback Drew Hare went 15 of 27 for 225 yards and a touchdown.

Joel Bouagnon had 13 carries for 84 yards. NIU has done a great job protecting Hare all season, but Tuesday the Herd pressured him and sacked the Huskies’ QB three times.

The loss to Marshall was NIU’s third straight loss in a bowl game after defeats against Florida State in Orange Bowl two seasons ago and Utah State in last year’s Poinsettia Bowl.

Carey is now 0-3 in bowl games.

Tuesday’s bowl was the final game for NIU’s seniors, a class that won three MAC titles. Carey said he told the team after the game that one game isn’t going to take away what the program accomplished this season.

“We just won the fourth MAC championship in school history, third in four years. And they can’t take that away from this senior class, and this senior class, along with last year’s, is the winningest two senior classes ever to come through here,” Carey said.

“None of that has changed. There were a lot of tears, there was a lot of heartache (in the locker room). That was because these guys care and they poured their whole selves into this thing.

“But when the dust settles, first thing they’re going to think of is MAC championships and things like that that they’ve been a part of.”

Blowout shows Huskies still have room to grow BOCA RATON, Fla. – Northern Illinois’ program has had unparalleled success over the past few seasons.

But Tuesday’s 52-23 loss to Marshall in the Boca Raton Bowl proved there’s still plenty of room to grow if the Huskies want to take their program to the next level and be in contention for the Group of Five major bowl berth year in and year out.

Tuesday was a chance for NIU to prove itself against one of the nation’s elite programs, a team that just suffered one loss all season and was in contention for a New Year’s Six bowl, which eventually went to Boise State.

NIU has strived to be the next Boise, who will compete it its third major bowl game Dec. 31 in the Fiesta Bowl against Arizona.

The Huskies have come a long way.

The résumé includes three conference championships in four years, as well as a BCS bowl berth.

Fans do, and should, want more.

VIEWS Steve Nitz back Drew Hare will be a fun player to watch these next two years, and there’s plenty of offensive talent returning, although replacing the offensive line will be key.

Defensively, players such as defensive end Perez Ford, cornerback Paris Logan and safety Marlon Moore are back.

Looking at a more broad scale, NIU athletic director Sean Frazier has done a great job putting the football program in a good spot.

He put forth his facilities master plan back in November, which calls for numerous upgrades to Huskie Stadium. He’s done wonders when it comes to the schedule.

Upcoming games on the Huskies’ slate include games against fellow

Group of Five programs like BYU, San Diego State, South Florida and Wyoming, teams which NIU will be judged against. For only the second time since 2003, a BCS team will come to Huskie Stadium during the next three years, as Boston College will visit NIU in either 2016 or 2017.

For now, Tuesday night was a great chance for NIU to really prove itself against a good program. There would have been some added national respect. But the Huskies were outperformed and overmatched by the better team. The Huskies couldn’t slow down the high-powered Thundering Herd offense.

The future is good, and the goal for NIU should always be to be the next Boise State.

The program has done a good job of coming close.

NIU isn’t quite at that level yet.

Confidence growing after beating Wizards

Simple, but very deliberate.

“Yeah, it’s real,” Noah said.

“Chicago Bulls are getting healthy. ... It’s very real. And we know that we’re still not where we want to be. We know the sky is the limit for our team.

Our confidence is just getting better, and we’re going to just keep working. And we feel we can get even better defensively, but it’s all coming. And it’s going to be a special year.”

It’s definitely been a special three games.

First beating the physical Grizzlies in Memphis on Friday, then running with Toronto’s version of “Showtime’’ over the weekend, and now handing the up-and-coming Wizards (198) just their fourth home loss, all the while getting serious production from Derrick Rose in back-to-back games?

No wonder the usually stoic Rose broke out into a swag stroll after hitting a late jumper in the fourth quarter.

“No, it was just what I feel at the time,” Rose said of the half-skipping, half-swagging walk he did back to the bench with the Wizards on the ropes.

“I never celebrate, but it was just something I felt. It just came out that way.”

It was as if the aging, injured lion was reminding the wouldbe king that he’s not there yet, and definitely happening on Rose’s watch.

“He’s been through a lot,” Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said, when asked about Rose’s emotional moment. “He’s worked his way through it. He’s playing better and better, and gaining confidence from that.”

It was definitely a positive night for Rose, but the big picture was great performances from the guard in back-to-backs for the first time this season.

Sure, he had both knees iced up and was walking like a senior citizen after the game, but he got through it, and did so with great results.

Marmion senior forward Jake Esp unloaded for 39 points in Monday’s win against Eisenhower at the Chuck Dayton Classic, then followed up with 23 more in Tuesday’s secondround loss to Glenbrook North.

Esp, who has committed to play college baseball at Villanova, is the Kane County Chronicle-St. Charles Bank & Trust Athlete of the Week. He spoke with Chronicle sports editor Jay Schwab after the Glenbrook North game. The following is an edited transcript:

GLEN ELLYN – The St. Francis boys basketball team struggled offensively Tuesday, losing a pool-play game at Glenbard West’s tournament to Willowbrook, 53-45.

“I thought the kids played hard enough but we were not efficient offensively at all, and [Monday night] I thought we were very efficient offensively against a real good zone team in Northridge Prep,” said St. Francis coach Bob Ward, referring to the Spartans’ tournament-opening win. “I

just didn’t think we took advantage of some good scoring opportunities, but Willowbrook’s a good team.”

The Spartans, who closed to within 45-41 at one point, had trouble finding secondary scorers to supplement perimeter threat Jason Sullivan.

Healthy lifestyle choices important for aging successfully Dear Doctor K: Can you boil down all of the health advice out there? What do I need to do to age successfully?

Dear Reader: Wow, that’s a tall order. Thirty years ago, when I heard people talk about “successful aging,” they were talking about avoiding disease and living longer.

These days, we want more.

Of course we want to live long, disease-free lives. But we also want to be physically fit and functional. We want to stay emotionally healthy. And we want our minds and memories to remain sharp.

In fact, a growing number of my patients, and my friends, tell me they want to have a long life only if the extra years fit this description. As one patient said to me, “I want to prolong my life, so long as I don’t also prolong my decrepitude.”

Researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health set out to determine the impact a healthy lifestyle could have on aging. They analyzed data collected from the Nurses’ Health Study of more than 100,000 women to estimate how a healthy lifestyle at midlife influenced aging decades later.

They defined successful aging as reaching age 70 while meeting these four criteria: • No major chronic diseases, such as heart disease, stroke,

Komaroff diabetes or cancer; • No cognitive impairment, meaning memory loss or worsening of basic thinking skills; • No major disabilities that limit the ability to walk around freely and conduct normal daily activities; • No major problems with mental health, such as anxiety or depression.

Here’s what they found: • High-quality diet. Women who stuck closest to a healthy diet boosted their odds of successful aging by 34 percent. A healthy diet emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains and fish. It minimizes processed and red meat, sugar-sweetened drinks, trans fats and sodium.

• Regular exercise. This includes all forms of daily physical activity, including walking.

Women who were the most active nearly doubled their odds of successful aging, compared with the most sedentary nurses.

• Healthy body weight. Having a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or above (a level defined as obesity) lowered the odds of successful

aging by about 80 percent.

• Moderate alcohol consumption. In the Nurses’ Health Study, light to moderate alcohol use (one or two drinks a day, on three to four days of the week) increased the odds of good long-term health by about 20 to 30 percent.

Since many of you ask questions about healthy lifestyle, we discuss it frequently in this column. Therefore, I doubt it will surprise anyone that the factors I’ve listed above are good for your health.

But the point made by the Harvard School of Public Health study is just how good for you these lifestyle practices are. For example, there are no medicines yet invented that can double your chance of successful aging, as we’ve defined it. Yet regular exercise can do that.

Studies of hundreds of thousands of people over their adult lifetimes prove that a healthy lifestyle can do more for successful aging than any medical technology. And even though this study involved women, other studies find that healthy lifestyle is just as beneficial for men.

Boyfriend is Jekyll and Hyde Dr. Wallace: I was just positive that I had finally found my “perfect” boyfriend that I could be with forever. He is everything a girl could want. He is kind, intelligent, handsome, considerate, caring and he also has a wonderful sense of humor. All of these desirable characteristics are evident when we are alone. South’s sequence shows a balanced 25-27 points. It is a bad auction for standard bidders, because if North has a very weak hand with a four- or five-card major, he does not know whether it is safe to use Stayman or a transfer.

There is a solution, called Kokish, but it isn’t perfect and has some complexity. You can find details on the Internet.

South seems to have nine top tricks: one spade, one heart, four diamonds and three clubs. However, he cannot get that third club trick, because the suit is blocked and he does not have a dummy entry. How can he get around the problem?

He needs to call on West’s assistance.

Declarer ducks the first trick, takes East’s heart return with his ace and cashes his six minor-suit winners. Then he leads his heart jack. West can cash three heart winners, but then must either lead a club to dummy’s ace or a spade into South’s ace-queen, each allowing the contract to make.

Yes, here South could have taken the first trick, but that might have required some good card reading if hearts were 4-3, not 5-2.
