Elburn police chief ready for next chapter ELBURN – After more than six years as Elburn’s police chief, Steve Smith said he is ready for the next chapter of his life.

The Elburn Village Board on Monday accepted the resignation of Smith, 65. He will be replaced on an interim basis by former Kane County Sheriff Pat Perez. Previously, Smith worked at the St. Charles Police Department for Steve Smith 23 years.

After the Village Board meeting Monday, Smith said there are several reasons for his retirement. He recently

Three St. Charles High School grads named distinguished alumni

By KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – A Kane County judge and St. Charles Park District commissioner are among the recipients of the 2016 Distinguished Alumni Award, the St. Charles School District 303 announced Monday in a release.

The recipients – Susan Clancy Boles, James Cooke and Melissa Hefferin Berquist – will be recognized at the St. Charles Education Foundation’s Night of Jazz event, which is set for Feb. 20 at the St. Charles Country Club, according to the release.

The Distinguished Alumni Award is given to District 303 graduates who have demonstrated a high level of achievement in their field of endeavor or in their contri-

butions to their community, the release states.

Boles graduated from St. Charles High School in 1983 and is the second woman to serve as chief judge for the 16th Judicial Circuit in Kane County. A graduate of Valparaiso University School of Law, Boles was appointed associate judge in March 2007 and became a circuit judge in January 2009, according to the release. She became chief judge this month.

Cooke, a 1972 St. Charles High School graduate, is an attorney specializing in real estate, business, estate and tax planning, according to the release. It stated he also has been involved with the Fox Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross, the Kane County Bar Association’s Real Estate Section, the St. Charles Parks Foundation and the Kane County

Elburn’s Village Board unanimously approved Smith’s resignation. According to the separation agreement and release, distributed to reporters after the meeting, Smith will remain a village employee until April 30, and will be paid for 176 hours of unused vacation time and 374 hours of unused sick time.

“He’s a gentleman, and he stepped in when he was needed,” Elburn Village President Dave Anderson said. Then, speaking to Smith, Anderson added, “We thank you.”

Perez’s appointment as the interim chief also was unanimously approved. Anderson said Perez started working in Elburn on Tuesday, so Perez Burge

can spend some time with Smith before Smith’s final shift. Perez will be paid $50 an hour for 40 hours a week, with no insurance or pension benefits. After Smith’s final shift, Perez takes over as the interim chief.

Anderson said Elburn will look to hire a consulting service to help with the search for the next police chief. In the meantime, he said Perez will oversee the department.

“I don’t think we could ask for a better individual to step in and help us with this,” Anderson said.

‘People are still good’ Geneva woman grateful for holiday season good deed

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Norma Stokes had just finished packing her trunk with groceries from Meijer in St. Charles when a young man asked her if she knew her tire was low.

“I got out and looked, and it was pretty low,” said Stokes, 84, of Geneva. “I asked him, ‘Would it be OK to drive to Kirk Road to get home?’ And he said, ‘We want to fill up your tire with air so you can get home OK.’ ” Stokes, who uses a cane and needed help from a store employee to put the groceries in her trunk, said she never filled a tire before and didn’t know how.

“I’m afraid to,” Stokes said.

“I’d be afraid I’d blow it up.”

So she drove to the Meijer gas station nearby with the young couple in a white van following, and the man filled her tire, Norma Stokes Stokes said.

“He said, ‘It feels like it’s just low on air,’ ” Stokes said the man told her. “I told them thank you and Merry Christmas.”

Stokes and the anonymous couple went their separate ways and that would have been the end of the story – except Stokes posted a short account on a Facebook group page – What’s

“They were in a white van and didn’t want me to have trouble on my way home. As a senior citizen needing help, it was a Blessing to me and I want to thank them.”

“I wanted to thank them again because they were so good,” Stokes said. “I wanted other people to know how good they were. I wanted everybody to know.”

In less than 24 hours, her post had 428 likes and many positive comments.

“In this day and age, where

all we hear is bad news lately – an awful lot of bad news in our Tri-Cities here – it’s nice to hear that people are still good,” Stokes said of all the positive reactions. “I think it’s great they all have something nice to say.”

Stokes’ daughter, Marlene Bradberry of St. Charles, said when her mother first told her what happened, her reaction was to worry that her mother could have been a crime victim.

But now she sees it as a wonderful deed.

“We like making people happy, and that was a good story.

It was such a good Christmas story,” Bradberry said. “Everybody has to remember to do stuff like that.”

COVER STORY ‘WONDERFUL FOR OUR ECONOMY’ Ham, turkey still among popular holiday meats

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com Jean Sorce on Tuesday picked up her order and happily stepped out of line at Josef’s Elegante Meats and Deli in Geneva.

“They cut everything for me today,” Sorce, a Geneva resident, said of the business.

“They told me, ‘You won’t be able to move around here [Dec. 23].”

Josef’s owner Pat Falcone said the shop will fulfill 500 orders over the next two days. It is one of several local businesses taking on the holiday food shopping rush.

With schools and some businesses closing for the holidays, people have time to visit stores, business owners said.

This means that the stores pull in all the help they can get to serve customers who are hosting family and throwing parties.

On today’s date, Dec. 23, the Blue Goose Market typically does the equivalent of four regular days of business, Blue Goose President Paul Lencioni said. The busiest hours will be between 11 a.m. and noon, or noon and 1 p.m. on Christmas Eve, Lencioni said.

“It goes from a background hum to deafening noise,” Lencioni said of the foot traffic in the store.

The demand builds throughout December as customers began to host families and throw parties, said Janelle Ream, who owns Ream’s Meat Market with husband Randy Ream. Although Ream’s stays busy during the Thanksgiving holiday, the week of Christmas is busier because there are many specialty items customers want through meat markets.

ELBURN – Amin Kanchwala is bringing Rosati’s Pizza back to Elburn.

Kanchwala, 24, is a St. Charles resident and a former student in the Kaneland school district. He owns another Rosati’s location in Coal City. His father owns Chicago Pizza in Batavia.

He said he has wanted to own a Rosati’s closer to home, and he had been watching the Elburn location, which is at 860 N. Main St., in the same shopping center that houses Jewel. The previous owners of the Elburn Rosati’s closed the restaurant during the summer. Kanchwala said he is eager to build up the Rosati’s brand in the village. The Elburn location opened under its new management Dec. 5.

“Our product here is going to be better than it was before,” Kanchwala said.

He said the establishment has been fully remodeled. The location features a dining area, as well as TVs and a Chicago sports theme.

“All of this is new,” Kanchwala said.

Eventually, he said, he would like to have a larger dining area, “a really nice one.”

“What I really want to do is have a sports pub in this town,” he said. “It would be very nice.”

A Democratic candidate for Kane County coroner has survived a challenge to his nominating petition, according to Kane County Clerk’s Office documents.

The three-member Kane County Electoral Board on Tuesday voted unanimously to overrule Aurora resident Sixto Ojeda’s objection to North Aurora resident John Shoemaker’s petition.

The board consisted of Kane County Director of Elections Suzanne Fahnestock, Kristy Sharpness, executive assistant to Kane County Circuit Clerk Tom Hartwell and Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon.

Shoemaker is the current Aurora Township highway commissioner. He will face Tao Martinez in the Democratic primary for Kane County coroner.

Bob Tiballi is running against incumbent Rob Russell in the Republican primary for coroner.

“I’m glad to move on from John these ridicuShoemaker lous petition objections,” Shoemaker said Tuesday in a phone interview. “Any way to slow down my campaign seems to be the only way to go at this point.”

Ojeda, though his attorney, Keri-Lyn Krafthefer, first objected to about 250 signatures on Shoemaker’s petition. The objection was later removed, and a request for the board to rule on the law of the petition itself was submitted.

8 Restaurant eyes former Starbucks site in downtown St. Charles

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A restaurant is in the works for the former Starbucks Coffee site in downtown St. Charles.

The St. Charles Liquor Control Commission on Monday recommended approval of granting a Class B liquor license to Title House Restaurant and Tavern, which is not requesting a late-night permit.

The City Council is expected to act on the request Jan. 19 following consideration by aldermen in committee on Jan. 4.

Police Chief Jim Keegan, along with members of the liquor commission, praised applicant Marianna Ridenour for her thorough business plan. He described it as a “very comprehensive business model” and “one of the best packets I’ve seen in quite some time.”

According to the business plan submitted to the city, Ti-

tle House, at 101 E. Main St., St. Charles, will feature “a variety of fresh, locally sourced, boldly flavored, made-to-order menu items” and will offer casual counter service, table-side full-service and takeout.

The business plan also indicates that Title House strives to be the premier sportsthemed restaurant in the Tri-Cities with an anticipated opening date of April 2016.

“This will be the finest, most comfortable sports bar in this region,” the business plan states. “At this sports bar, we want our customers to have a more exciting experience during their favorite sport and dining time.”

Commission member Robert Gehm said it’s nice to see the space being used.

“It’s great that it’s on the corner there,” Ridenour said.

Starbucks moved from the site in the Arcada Theatre building to First Street in August.

St. Charles police: Teenagers turned park facilities into ‘own destruction area’ 9 ST. CHARLES – Three teens accused of causing more than $32,000 in damage to park district facilities face felony charges out of St. Charles and have charges pending from multiple vandalism cases in Campton Hills, authorities said Tuesday.

Nicholas P. Zamecnik, 18, of the 41W000 block of Forest Lane, Elburn; Kyle J. Wandle, 19, of the 4N000 block of East Mary Drive, St. Charles; and William J. Donlevy, 18, of the 4N000 block of Chaffield Drive, St. Charles, are each charged with burglary and criminal damage to government property, St. Charles Deputy Police Chief David Kintz said.

Both charges are Class 2 felonies, he said.

They are accused of damag-

ing the concession building for James O. Breen Community Park and a building that houses offices at Otter Cove Aquatic Kyle Wandle Park about 3 a.m. Saturday, Kintz said.

Both of the St. Charles Park District facilities are at Peck and Campton Hills Nicholas roads in western Zamecnik St. Charles.

In a release, St. Charles police described the damage as “extensive” and included broken doors, broken windows, broken computer monitors and broken printers. The teens also broke refrigerators in the concession area, destroyed a lightning detection system, carved

into walls and discharged a fire extinguisher, according to the release.

“They just went on a rampage and turned William it into their own Donlevy destruction area,” Kintz said.

Dave Johnson, assistant superintendent of parks for the district, said he is “disappointed” that the youths “would take it upon themselves to cause that much vandalism.”

Because the damage happened in the offseason, the repairs shouldn’t disrupt operations, he said. However, he said, dealing with the wreckage has taken “considerable effort and time beyond our normal duties,” leading to “a lot of added burden on us for no reason.”

He said police do not know why the teens vandalized the area.

As of midday Tuesday, Kintz said, the park district was still working on assessing the total damage, but a preliminary esti-

mate placed the damage at more than $32,000. Kintz noted that the lightning detection system alone was valued at $8,000.

The damaged facilities host offices for the Campton United Soccer Club, Tri-City Soccer Association and Tri-City Football Association, which were also damaged and destroyed, according to the release. The release indicated officials will work with each of the groups to determine the value of the damage.

The Campton Hills Police Department also is pursuing charges against the teens, Chief Dan Hoffman said. He said they are connected to burglaries at Wasco Elementary School in November, Wasco Nursery in December and three concession stands from October and November.

Clinton shows why she is frontrunner during debate

By STEPHEN STROMBERG The Washington Post Hillary Clinton’s worst enemy is Hillary Clinton, and the first few minutes of Saturday night’s Democratic debate seemed to prove it.

Her early answers were meandering, and her delivery was flat.

She spent a useless paragraph on the Sanders campaign data breach when a simple “this shouldn’t be a big issue; let’s move on” would have sufficed. As she started describing her strategy for Iraq and Syria, she ran through bullet points as though she were describing a bland PowerPoint presentation only she could see. Comfortably ahead in the polls, she seemed to assume the result of the Democratic primaries by stressing her differences with Republicans rather than those on stage. Her early performance portended a return of the over-cautious, self-defeating Hillary Clinton whose campaign choked in 2008.

Then she woke up. As the moderators pressed the candidates on the specifics of their plans, Clinton, finally off script, spoke more forcefully and with the sort of detail one would expect from a former secretary of state.

As she defended American action in the world, she offered the best explanation to date for why she supported intervening in Libya, insisting that “if we had not joined with our European partners and our Arab partners to assist the people in Libya, you would be looking at Syria.”

Though U.S. intervention can lead to power vacuums in dangerous places, she argued that so can the lack of it.

She also was funny at times, signing off with, “May the Force be with you,” which was pretty much perfect.

Clinton opened herself to several substantive criticisms, too. She would not say what she would do

if her strategy for Iraq and Syria did not work. She focused on how Donald Trump’s odious anti-Muslim nonsense is outside the nation’s security interests, when it is at least as important that Trump’s proposals are intrinsically wrong.

She stressed that she did not understand the encryption technology at the center of a debate about privacy and law enforcement data access, which was not reassuring.

And Libya looks more and more like Syria every day.

But these flaws were small relative to those in the problem-riddled plans from her rivals, not to mention the magic-button-dependent foreign policy suggestions coming from the GOP side.

Former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley spoke up a lot on Saturday night, but often to promise everything to everyone. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vermont, stressed that he would build and rely on an Arab coalition to combat the Islamic State on the ground. And if Arab nations refuse? “My plan is to make it work, to tell Saudi Arabia that instead of going to war in Yemen, they, one of the wealthiest countries on Earth, are going to have to go to war against ISIS.” They are going to have to? Good luck making that order stick.

Moreover, even as Sanders stressed the importance of building an international coalition to defeat ISIS, he bragged about voting against the first Gulf War, a prime example of combining a relatively modest goal – defending Kuwait, not unseating Saddam Hussein – with a broad coalition, which is the sort of thing he claims to want.

Clinton’s slow start gave her rivals a chance to assert themselves.

But she rallied and won the night.

they are willing to accept thousands of gun deaths as “normal.” No other country tolerates mass murders. But they’re now practically a daily occurrence in the U.S. – more than 350 already this year, according to some reports!

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Americans need to vote against GOP politicians who take money from the NRA while refusing to enact common-sense gun laws that would reduce the slaughter.

“We know we’re swimming better,” Schalz said.

“I don’t know if I’d call it a rocky start, but we got a bit of a wake up call from a few good teams that could make their way to state in Fenwick and Sandburg. We had guys then swim significantly faster at our relays that following Saturday, and that carried over into today.”

Confidence will be a key moving forward for Marmion. With a group of young swimmers, Schalz expected a learning curve from the beginning, although high expectations always are present when the veteran Schalz is coach.

Kaneland responding well to new coach Conroy

It’s never a guarantee to know how high school athletes will react to having a new coach, but Kaneland has done so very smoothly.

The Knights won five of their first six games to start the season, taking their 5-1 record to the Plano Christmas tournament.

Coach Joe Conroy knew from the beginning that it would be “a work in progress,” but he is very happy and excited about the way his team has responded to his style and philosophy on the court.

“I’m a defensive-minded coach and always have been,” Conroy said. “The way the guys have asked questions shows they want to understand, they want to know and want to succeed.”

Kaneland will have a weeklong break after the Christmas tournament before heading to rival DeKalb on Jan. 8 in Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference East play.

Myhre has had another strong start to the season, placing first and second in his two individual races at Saturday’s Neuqua Valley Invite. ‘Lethargic’ start dooms Saints

By STEVE BOURBON editorial@kcchronicle.com WHEATON – For the second time in a month, the St. Charles East girls basketball team couldn’t overcome a slow start against Schaumburg.

The Saints tallied just eight points in the first half against the Saxons on Tuesday, which led to a 43-37 defeat Sara in the second Rosenfeldt round of the Falcon Holiday Classic at Wheaton North High School.

“That pretty much tells the game right there. Wow. That was bad,” East coach Lori Drumtra said. “Schaumburg looked like they wanted it more, we looked like we had weights in our shoes. We looked just lethargic.”

Lori Drumtra St. Charles East coach chipped in six points and nine boards. The Saints couldn’t avenge an earlier loss to the Saxons (8-5), a 51-42 defeat in the Schaumburg Thanksgiving tournament on Nov. 24.

“It kind of went the same way. We hit some shots early and then they fought back,” Schaumburg coach Curtis Goodwin said. “We knew when we were up that it wasn’t going to stay with that cushion. They’re a team that is very capable to make runs and we braced ourselves for that.”

Mallory Gerber had 17 points and 11 rebounds, and Maya Bowens nearly added a double-double of her own with nine points and 10 rebounds.

For the game, Schaumburg outrebounded East 36-21, including a 15-3 edge in the first quarter.

East trailed, 12-2, after the first period and 22-8 at halftime as Gerber was masterful in the midrange game, and was able to convert multiple second-chance opportunities off offensive rebounds.

“She’s a special player and can do a lot of different things,” Drumtra said. “We wanted to contain her a little more than we did. At times, it seemed like she had free rein out there.”

Schaumburg clogged East’s offensive sets in the first half by sagging off East’s shooters and flooding the paint. The Saints weren’t able to convert as the squad hit just two 3-pointers for the game.

The Saints made a push to end the third quarter and trimmed their deficit to eight points, capped by a buzz-

er-beating layup by Rosenfeldt.

The Saints picked up the tempo on offense and got easy looks in the paint, and junior guard Marissa Urso brought a solid effort off the bench by grabbing four rebounds, despite being the shortest player on the floor at 5-foot-4.

“I think Sam Munroe pushed the ball and gave me and Hannah Vitkus easy layups,” Rosenfeldt said. “I also thought Marissa’s intensity, getting on the ground a couple times to get some steals. They brought the intensity up.”

The Saints got to within six points in the fourth quarter, however, the Saxons held on for the victory.

East will get another crack at Schaumburg when the two teams collide again in the regular season finale Feb. 12 in St. Charles.

“Hopefully, we know them by then and we can play them better,” Rosenfeldt said.

East will face Wheaton North at 4:30 p.m. today in consolation play.

“I don’t know if ‘content’ is the right word, but we just didn’t make the right decisions against that press. … It just needs to be a little improved,” Meadows said.

An annual flu shot can help older adults avoid flu complications such as pneumonia. The flu shot is even more crucial for older adults who are at higher risk for serious complications because of existing health conditions.

Getting the shot each year can help prevent hospitalization or death from flu complications.

The study I discussed earlier does not tell us whether Fluzone reduces serious complications of flu. But it does suggest the higher dose helps the body mount a stronger defense.

One of the problems with any of the types of flu vaccine currently available is that different flu viruses circulate each year. Thus, the vaccine is a little different each year.

It takes months to make enough vaccine to be ready for flu season, and that means the vaccine makers need to guess correctly which flu strains will be circulating months in the future. Those guesses are not always perfect.

In recent years, medical research has identified what are called broadly neutralizing antibodies that attack most strains of the flu virus. Many research teams are pursuing ways that these antibodies might be exploited to give better protection against the flu than current, imperfect vaccines.

Though the high-dose flu shot may provide better protection, any flu shot is better than none. For best results, get the shot early in the flu season, which runs from October to May.

Dr, Wallace: I’m 12 years old and I guess you could call me a coward, because I’m not tough or aggressive. I don’t like disagreements and fights, and I’m sometimes told I don’t look very strong because I have a slight build. Because of all this, some guys started picking on me. They started by calling me names and then using me for a punching bag.

They don’t beat me up, but they punch me on the arm, slap me across the head and pull my ear. I’ve learned just to keep quiet because there are 10 of these guys and if I don’t keep my mouth shut, they only make things worse.

I’m also afraid they are in some kind of a gang.

Last week, a couple of these thugs asked me if I had any money and threatened to beat me up if I didn’t give it to them. So I didn’t get any lunch that day. Now I’m afraid that this week they are going to take my lunch money every day, and I don’t know what to do. I can’t hide from them, and they told me that if I told anyone they would “punch my lights out.”

Now I’m scared and don’t know what to do. I hate even going to school, but I don’t have a choice. What can I do?

Never, never, never should such behavior go unreported; it rips at the very fabric of the educational process. No student should ever have to go to school with this kind of fear that you are facing every day. Punks like these are petty criminals and require immediate humbling.

First of all, tell your parents what’s going on immediately! They need to know.

Next, make an appointment tomorrow to speak with your principal. Cut out your question and my answer and let your principal read it. Then fill in all the details and ask that this despicable behavior be stopped.

If for any reason you can’t get a meeting with your principal, have your parents call the school and set up a meeting with all of you present. I repeat: This should happen immediately. I’m certain the principal will take swift action to end the incidence of criminal extortion and threat-

ened violence on his campus.

However, if you continue to receive threats from any of those thugs or any other students, have your parents take the problem to the district superintendent of schools. Ninety-nine percent of all problems are effectively solved at this level.

The final step, if needed, is the local board of education, where your problem can and will be heard. Call the district office for the time and location of the next board meeting.

Just because you don’t like to fight and don’t consider yourself tough doesn’t mean that you are a coward.

Cowards run and hide, and that’s not you. You are going to speak up and ask for help, and that takes courage.

I have total faith that the bullying will stop when you alone, or with your parents, meet with your principal to discuss and eliminate the problem. I know the administrators in your school district detest bullying and act swiftly to eliminate it when it occurs.

I speak from experience as I used to be an administrator in the Garden Grove School District.

Dear Dr. K: I’ve heard that there is a high-dose flu shot. Does it protect better than a regular flu shot? Should I ask my doctor about it?

Dear Reader: The highdose flu vaccine, known as Fluzone, is approved for adults ages 65 and older.

It may provide better flu protection for older adults than the standard flu vaccine, which is less effective in older adults than in younger adults.

Both the high-dose and standard flu vaccines target three different strains of the flu virus, selected from the most common strains predicted to be circulating that year. In both vaccines, the viruses are inactivated, or killed, so they cannot cause the flu, even in people with weakened immune systems.

Both vaccines can cause mild symptoms of arm pain, redness, muscle aches or low-grade fever.

Most people have minimal to no symptoms. But the high-dose vaccine may slightly increase side effects.

The big difference is that the high-dose vaccine contains four times the dose of immune-stimulating antigens as the regular flu shot. This provokes the body to mount a greater immune (antibody) response.

A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine looked at the effectiveness of the highdose vaccine, compared to the regular flu vaccine, in older adults. Researchers randomly divided nearly 32,000 adults, ages 65 or older, into two groups.

One group received standard flu shots. The other group got high-dose flu shots.

Those who got the high-dose shots were 24 percent less likely to develop flu than those who got the standard shots.

The researchers estimate that the high-dose flu shot provides seniors with the same level of protection that younger adults

I left, and we are now being divorced.

With the bad trump break, South has five losers in his hand: one spade, one heart, two diamonds and one club.

But that will not be a problem if he can take 10 tricks.

How is that possible?

Declarer has four side-suit winners, so he needs six trump tricks, three tops and three ruffs.

He can get those if he is careful. At trick three, he should duck a spade, the key play.

Suppose the defenders shift to diamonds. South wins, plays a spade to dummy’s ace, ruffs a spade, cashes the club king, and ruffs his last club on the board. Then he leads another spade.

What does East do?

If he discards, South gets his third low ruff. If East ruffs in, South discards one of his diamond losers, effectively making the defense take two of its winners in one trick.
