eschelkopf@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Not everyone was running around Saturday trying to get their Christmas shopping done.

Those lining up outside Penrose Brewing Co. in Geneva were rewarded with an early Christmas present in the form of the brewery’s first two barrel-aged wild ales. Among those in line was John Majestic, 26, of St. Charles.

“I know the beer is going to be good,” Majestic said.

“It’s a good brewery.”

Also in line was Bill Owens, 40, of Batavia. He is a regular customer at Penrose, which opened in March.

“I like that it is local,” Owens said. “It’s really close to my house, and the beer is very good.”

Although the brewery didn’t open its doors until 11 a.m., people started lining up at 7 a.m. to get a hold of the ales, said Penrose brewmaster Tom Korder.

“It is more than we could have imagined,” said Korder of Batavia, who opened Penrose with Geneva resident Eric Hobbs. “We knew the beers were good.”

The fact that the event was on the Saturday before Christmas was a coincidence, Korder said.

“The beer was ready,” he said. “We started putting the beer in barrels after we

opened.”

Those standing in the chilly air were able to warm up with coffee from FreshGround Roasting, locat ed a few doors down from Penrose. Nobel House in Geneva also provided food at the event.

“We wanted to partner with other businesses,” Korder said. “We wanted people to enjoy themselves.”

Among those enjoying themselves was St. Charles

Township resident and home brewer Lee Haggas, who said Penrose has been a “great addition to the area.”

Korder said he appreciated the response Penrose has been receiving. The brewery’s tap room Saturday was bustling with activity.

“The local community has been getting on board with us,” he said.

Plans are to do additional releases in January, Korder said.

LOCAL NEWS Eight candidates each in St. Charles City Council, D-303 school board races

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com There are eight candidates each in the St. Charles City Council and St. Charles School District 303 Board races in the April 7 consolidated election, according to paperwork filed by Monday afternoon in various offices.

The St. Charles Park Board and St. Charles Library District Board also have contested races, each with four candidates for three open seats with four-year terms. The deadline to file election nomination packets for the spring election was 5 p.m. Monday.

The three incumbents on the school board – Vice President Kathy Hewell, Secretary Nick Manheim and board member Judith McConnell – filed for re-election. Their five challengers are Rick Leidig, Lowell Yarusso, Michael A. Vyzral, Jennifer Ann Reeder and Lori Linkimer.

The contested City Council races are Ward 2 incumbent Rita Payleitner and challenger Jake Wayne Wyatt; Ward 3 incumbent Todd Bancroft and Naomi Bosko; current Plan Commission member Steve Gaugel and Matthew Dowling.

Aldermen Dan Stellato

of Ward 1 and Ed Bessner of Ward 5 are running unopposed. Ward 4 Alderman Jim Martin is not seeking re-election.

Former aldermanic candidate Vanessa A. Bell-LaSota joins fellow St. Charles resident Trish Beckjord as the two challengers in the St. Charles Park Board race.

Board President Bob Thomson and Treasurer Jim Cooke filed to run for re-election; Secretary Nancy Cox did not.

St. Charles Library District resident Anne Francissen is the sole challenger in the district’s library board race, which includes Treasurer Norman Huntley and Trustees Michael Hill and Daniel Prath running for re-election.

There were no candidate submissions between Dec. 15 and 22 in Campton Hills, interim village clerk John Strauss said. Three candidates who filed on Nov. 21 to run for trustee seats and one who filed to run for village president were challenged

by Village President Patsy Smith.

A hearing on the candidate petition objections is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. today at the Congregational United Church of Christ, 40W451 Fox Mill Blvd., Campton Hills.

Two contested races for Batavia City Council

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – There will be two contested races for Batavia City Council in April.

Monday was the last day for candidates to file nominating petitions for the April 7 consolidated election. Incumbent 1st Ward alderman Carl Fischer filed nominating petitions, along with Carl Dinwiddie.

In October, Fischer was appointed to fill an empty seat on the City Council following the resignation of 1st Ward Alderman Garran Sparks. Dinwiddie also applied for the post.

Michael Russotto and Ron Rechenmacher have filed to run in the 6th Ward. Sixth Ward Alderman Lisa Clark is not running for re-election.

Rechenmacher also is running for the Batavia School District 101 Board. Rechenmacher has said he will decide later this week if he will drop out of the City Council race. In addition, 2nd Ward Alderman Alan Wolff, 3rd Ward Alderman Dan Chanzit, 4th Ward Alderman Susan Stark, 5th Ward Alderman Lucy Thelin Atac and 7th Ward Aldermen Dave Brown filed for re-election.

On the Batavia Park Board, Batavia Park Board Commissioner John Tilmon filed for re-election. He faces opposition from Mark Allen.

Former Batavia High School social studies teacher John Dryden is among eight candidates running for three seats on the Batavia school board in April.

Dryden recently retired from District 101. He made local and national headlines last year when he instructed his students that they had the Fifth Amendment right not to incriminate themselves before answering an in-class survey about emotional and at-risk behavior.

In addition, Batavia School Board President Cathy Dremel filed to run for re-election, along with board member Melanie Impastato, who was appointed to the board in June 2013 after the resignation of school board member Kathleen Roberts.

Monday was the last day for candidates to file nominating petitions. Incumbent board members Mary Stith, Kelly Nowak and Mike McCormick have filed to run in the April 7 consolidated election, along

with newcomers Taylor Egan, Evelyn Schneider, Tina Yagla and Ann Murtaugh.

On the Geneva City Council, there will be two contested races. Pat Lenski and Tara Burghart filed for the open 1st Ward seat. First Ward Alderman Chuck Brown, who was first elected to the City Council in 1987, is not running for re-election.

In addition, James Radecki and Eleanor Hamilton are running for the 4th Ward seat. Ra-

decki had previously served as alderman.

Fourth Ward Alderman Dorothy Flanagan, first elected to the City Council in 1993, is not running for re-election.

In addition, incumbent 5th Ward Alderman Tom Simonian is seeking a two-year term. Incumbent 2nd Ward Alderman Donald Cummings Jr. also filed for re-election, along with 3rd Ward Aldermen Dean Kilburg and Mary Seno and 5th Ward Alderman Craig Maladra.

Messenger Library Board in North Aurora Nine people are running for five open seats on the Messenger Library Board. Library Trustees Mary Beth Hutches, Justin Kline and Mark Saperston filed nominating petitions for four-year-terms, along with Corinn Sparks, Paul Rodenback and Eric Brumbaugh.

Trustees William Middleton and Dominick Leo filed nominating petitions for two-year terms, along with James Hicks.

North Aurora Village Board candidates previously filed nominating petitions.

Time’s ticking to complete Christmas preparations

asloboda@shawmedia.com Neither Frank Martin nor his son held any bags as they sat on a bench outside of Carson Pirie Scott in Charlestowne Mall on Monday afternoon, but that didn’t mean the Geneva residents hadn’t done any shopping that day.

Martin held a ticket in his hand, explaining they were waiting for a gift for his wife – his son’s mother – to be wrapped at Von Maur.

He said he had one reason for waiting to shop three days before Christmas.

“I have time now,” Martin said.

In a survey about holiday consumer spending, the National Retail Federation found that the average holiday shopper had completed about 53 percent of their shopping as of Dec. 10.

Of those with less than half of their shopping done, the survey found that 46.8 percent still were trying to decide what to buy; 28.4 percent were waiting for input from family and friends; 28.4 percent had other financial priorities before December; 21.7 percent admitted to being a procrastinator; and 23.4 percent were waiting for the best deals.

Whatever the reason, many national chains are giving last-minute shoppers time to get their buying in with latenight closings and, in some cases, around-the-clock hours until Christmas Eve. Independent shops also are adjusting for the holiday rush.

In Geneva, Third Street shop owner Christina Lambert has kept Circa open later than usual and even opened Monday – the day it’s usually closed.

“I’ve been busy,” she said, noting no parking was available on Third Street when she arrived that morning. “That’s always a good sign.”

At this time of year, he said, the store constantly runs out of items and continually reorders inventory. People generally un-

derstand that they waited too long if something is out of stock this close before Christmas, he said.

The National Retail Federation survey found most shoppers should be finished by now.

Nearly one-third planned to buy their last gift before Dec. 18, and 14.5 percent planned to check off their lists by last Saturday, which also was known as Super Saturday. Only 9.1 percent of shoppers expected to finish their shopping on Christmas Eve, the survey found.

But those wanting to mail gifts can’t wait much longer.

According to the U.S. Postal Service’s holiday deadlines, today is the deadline for priority mail express.

While holiday shopping kept such centers as Geneva Commons and the department stores of Charlestowne Mall busy Monday, they didn’t always take priority.

LeRoy Oakes hosts celebration of ‘timeless tradition’

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – As the overcast sky darkened Sunday evening, a fire in St. Charles Township burned brightly and a crowd of people gathered around it for warmth while celebrating the winter solstice.

“It’s a beautiful night to celebrate the first night of winter,” Ben Katzen, a naturalist with the Kane County Forest Preserve District, said.

The crowd marked the change of seasons at LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve with a campfire, a hike and the singing of such holiday tunes as “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.”

But Katzen, along with assistant naturalist Josh Libman, made sure participants learned something, too.

“We are here to celebrate a timeless tradition,” Katzen said about 17 minutes before the 4:22 p.m. sunset and 58 minutes before winter would officially begin at 5:03 p.m.

Rather, he said, the chill is because of the Earth’s 23.5-degree tilt. The Northern Hemi-

sphere is tilted away from the sun, he said.

As participants set out on a hike that would take them

along Ferson Creek and into an oak woodland, Katzen said they would return with something.

“We’re going to be on a search for a yule log to add to the fire,” he said.

Nobody knows exactly how the yule log tradition started because it’s so old, Katzen said, but it is considered to bring good fortune and good luck into the next year. Some would even save pieces of the charred wood to start the following winter’s fire, he said.

After dismissing a potential yule log for its large size, Katzen paused a group of hikers at the edge of the woods for their search. There, children spotted an eligible – albeit store-bought and purposefully placed – log.

“Hey, Josh, everyone – we found the yule log,” Katzen said, approaching Libman’s group of hikers, who had gathered around the fire.

After the log was added to the blaze, the crowd quieted as Libman read a winter solstice poem he found in the office.

“Let the warmth of the yule log fill our hearts,” he read.

STC seeks public participation at Seventh Avenue Creek meeting 9 ST. CHARLES – Residents along the Seventh Avenue Creek, along with those who were affected by the flooding of September 2008 or April 2013, are encouraged to attend an informational meeting about activities concerning that area, the city announced in a news release Monday.

The meeting is set for 7 p.m. Jan. 21 in the City Council Chambers at 2 E. Main St. in St. Charles.

“Even if a resident was

not affected by the flooding events, but lives near or adjacent to the properties impacted, their input will be very valuable to the creek study project and is invited to attend,” the release states.

The need for the meeting stems from the major rainfall events of 2008 and 2013, which flooded and affected many residents and businesses along the Seventh Avenue Creek, making roads impassable and damaging structures, according to the release.

Because the limits of the flooding far exceeded the lim-

its depicted on current flood insurance maps, the release states, the Federal Emergency Management Agency completed a draft study that will result in the issuance of new flood insurance maps.

The new maps will more accurately depict the flood risk to properties along the creek and may change limits of the current flood boundaries, according to the release.

The release indicates FEMA will schedule informational meetings and issue the draft maps for public comment before any new maps be-

come effective.

Meanwhile, the release states, the city is undertaking a study to evaluate the impacts of the revised maps and developing options for mitigating the impacts. St. Charles also will develop concepts for stream restoration, including improving eroded stream banks.

January’s meeting will feature preliminary results of the FEMA study and the maps. Information also will be shared about how the maps might impact property owners, including potential changes to flood

Evamarie “Re” Matalonis, of Dousman, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully in the comfort of her own home, surrounded by family and friends after a long and challenging journey but as expected, she was strong and fought till the end on Saturday, December 20, 2014, at the age of 54.

Re was born on September 15, 1960, in Buffalo, NY, the daughter of Paul and Nancy Matalonis.

In 1978, she graduated from St. Charles High School in St. Charles, Illinois and from Western Illinois University in Macomb in 1983. Re worked at Aldi in management for many years and loved her job and Aldi family dearly. She was an avid Chicago Bears and Cubs fan and was a passionate reader, athlete and outdoorswoman. Re loved Christmas, camping, traveling, great food, good wine, and lively conversation. Family and friends were absolutely everything to her and she adored her two dogs, Emma and Jessie.

She is survived by her husband.

Perfect Bar & Co. is recalling three lot numbers – 2814V, 2914V and 3714V – of the peanut butter and cranberry crunch flavors. The numbers can be found near the UPC code on the back or side of the product. As of Monday morning, no illnesses had been immediately associated with any of the recalled products.

Salmonella bacteria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems. In healthy persons, it can cause fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal cramps.

Each year, the Batavia Chamber of Commerce hosts an awards ceremony to honor the Citizen of the Year and recognize many local businesses for their contribution to our community, through the Ole Awards. This annual event, Inspire, is the premier event for the chamber.

Last month, I wrote about one of the businesses that I visited as part of the Ole Award nomination process.

This time, I am going to share with you a meeting I had in preparation for the selection of the Citizen of the Year.

When selecting the Citizen of the Year, a group of past Citizen’s of the Year is assembled to discuss the merits of each nominee.

Then after a short debate in the mayor’s office, a name rises to the top, and the committee votes on the winner.

This year, Ruth Burnham, a regular participant in the committee, was not able to attend, so we met up for a chat to discuss this year’s nominees. Ruth is the 1992 Citizen of the Year, and I had the pleasure of a fireside chat with her at The Holmstad Town Center.

Ruth couldn’t be any sweeter. She is beautiful, poised and a pure delight. I was enchanted by her. From her perfectly set hair, to her beautiful jewelry, Ruth Burnham is a sight for sore eyes.

I began by asking her, why she thought she was selected as Citizen of the Year in 1992. She said, “There weren’t that many to choose from back then. Batavia was a smaller town.”

In typical “Citizen” fashion, she didn’t think she was deserving of the award.

I then asked what was her favorite organization, and why did she devote so much time to it. She said, her church, the Congregational Church of Batavia. She likes being on committees and having a voice in what is being done, and then she feels proud when they accomplish something.

Ruth liked talking about her family and was somewhat shy about her own personal accomplishments.

So she began speaking about her former husband, Joseph Burnham. They met when they were both stationed in Kansas City, Missouri. Ruth was one of the first women to enlist in the Navy and serve in the Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service during World War II. She didn’t go into much detail about her time in the service; she wanted to focus on her life with Joe. She recalled the time when they went to downtown Chicago to pick up their marriage license. Since they were nearby and Joe had never been to Marshall Fields & Company, they decided to go in to have a look.

Once inside, Joe was in awe of the splendor of the sight, and proclaimed to Ruth, “I am going to work here someday!” And, someday, he did. Joe worked in every department, with greater responsibility along the way, and he eventually became president and CEO of Marshall Fields. Ruth was so proud of her husband, and you can still feel the love she had for him when she recalls that accomplishment.

St. Charles business offering free toys to families in need

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A downtown St. Charles business has a large collection of new and used toys to give away to families in need for Christmas, its owner said.

Anderson’s Coins and Collectibles, 221 W. Main St., St. Charles, has free toys for boys and girls ages 1 and older, said Rob Anderson, the shop’s owner.

Anderson invites any

family in need to come to his store while the store is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m today or from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Wednesday. He will work with each family to make sure each child receives a gift.

“If they’re in need, I’m more than willing to help,” Anderson said.

Anderson started giving away gifts on Dec. 14, and – as of Monday afternoon – he had given away gifts for 203 children.

This is the first year Anderson has offered a gift program out of his store. He wanted to help families because of hardships his own family endured when he was younger, and also because he sees people from all walks of life coming in to sell items at his store.

Families choose from Anderson’s current store selection, as well as donated toys that people brought to the store. At first Anderson thought he was going to con-

duct the program himself, but then his social media postings led to multiple volunteers and donated gifts.

Anderson said there are families that might have missed out on other toy drives earlier this year, so he hopes his efforts will prevent any children from going without gifts on Christmas.

“To be able to help so many, I’m so happy I [and the volunteers have] been able to make a difference,” Anderson said.

Salute to graceful silence of George W. Bush

SUNSTEIN Bloomberg News In the domain of foreign affairs, 2014 has brought heated national debates on an impressive range of subjects: Russia, Ukraine, Iran, Syria, Ebola, immigration policy and, most recently, torture, North Korea and Cuba. One of the more remarkable features of all these discussions has been the consistent grace of President George W. Bush.

This month, Bush offered a rare comment on a public debate.

Responding to the Senate’s release of the CIA torture report, he said: “We’re fortunate to have men and women who work hard at the CIA serving on our behalf. These are patriots and whatever the report says, if it diminishes their contributions to our country, it is way off base.” Note that Bush paid tribute to the employees of the CIA – and pointedly declined to take a shot at the Barack Obama administration.

No one doubts that, on some important questions, Bush is in profound disagreement with his successor. Nonetheless, he has maintained silence. In March, he explained, “I don’t think it’s good for the country to have a former president undermine a current president; I think it’s bad for the presidency for that matter.”

To many Republicans, that crisp explanation is not convincing. But Bush has made an honorable calculation.

He was president for eight years, and the substance of his own views is hardly absent from public debate today – whether or not he raises a personal objection while out of office. He’s aware that whenever a former president speaks out against the current one, the criticism gets amplified beyond its merits.

Bush doesn’t want to exploit his past role in that way. “I really don’t long for publicity,” he said.

Contrast that statement with the case of Leon Panetta, Obama’s former CIA director and secretary of defense. In his book “Worthy Fights,” he discloses internal debates that officials expected to remain private, and complains the White House was “so eager to rid itself of Iraq that it was willing to withdraw rather than lock in arrangements that would preserve our influence and interests.”

Similarly, in his book, “Duty,” Robert Gates, who was secretary of defense under both Bush and Obama, writes that, in 2010, he concluded that, with respect to Afghanistan, Obama “doesn’t believe in his own strategy, and doesn’t consider the war to be his.

For him, it’s all about getting out.”

It should go without saying that if Panetta and Gates had not had the privilege of working in the Obama administration, few people would pay attention to their books. The contrast with Bush could not be greater: Panetta and Gates have exploited their own roles.

Sure, confidentiality and loyalty have limits. If a former official was exposed to genuine wrongdoing – for example, in the form of illegality, as opposed to policy disagreements – he or she may have a duty to speak out. But neither Panetta nor Gates points to such wrongdoing.

For his understated remarks about the CIA and his continued silence about his successor, a salute to George W. Bush – along with hope that, when he leaves office, Obama will follow the example.

The Saints ultimately joined DeKalb’s Chuck Dayton tournament, and their debut there Monday went a long way toward soothing the chip on the shoulder East coach Pat Woods described.

Of course, exceeding triple digits can be a salve for many things.

Top-seeded East routed Mundelein, 102-66, sending Woods and his staff on anoth-

er impromptu hunt. When was the last time the Saints (9-1) reached the century mark?

“Believe me, we were not trying to score 100,” Woods said, citing a self-imposed, second-half rule that prevented the team from embarking on any fast breaks.

“Although it happened, I mean, I’m not going to fight it. We didn’t try to embarrass anyone, you know. We didn’t press. … I mean, Cole (Gentry) played half the game. So did most of our other starters, played half the game. So at that point, you’ve just got to play, and that’s what we did, I thought.”

Esp scores career-high 39 points in Marmion win

Rich Crabel intended to bring a more community-minded approach to the Burlington Central football program.

He stands by that philosophy, although doing so might have accelerated the rate at which the position wore on him.

Crabel stepped down Thursday as the Rockets’ coach after four seasons on the job.

Crabel said he still loves coaching and would like to continue somewhere as an assistant, but all the organizational trappings of the job became overbearing.

“The big push when I took that job was to make us more of community and more of what we call our football family,” Crabel said.

“We have a father-son steak night, a mother-son banquet, and those aren’t things I ever regret doing. I think they were great for our program … but when you put those things in place, you’re overseeing those things all the time along with all the other

things you do.

“I think all of those things are important, and just on the education side there are new things we have to get done in dealing with Common Core and all new assessments we do are very time-consuming, as well.”

Crabel, a business teacher at Central, said the notion of stepping down has been on his mind from late this season on, and that he had ongoing dialogue with athletic director Steve Diversey about the possibility before finalizing his decision. He said Rockets players were not blindsided by the news.

“The majority of them know I have been considering this,” Crabel said. “It was not a secret to them that I was considering doing this.”

The Rockets finished 6-4 this season, falling in the first round of the IHSA Class 5A playoffs against Sterling.

Crabel went 22-16 in his four years with the Rockets.

Crabel has coached in various capacities since 1986 at Eureka College as well as Herscher, Genoa-Kingston, Byron and Burlington Central, taking only one year off.

‘Santa’ waits to size up Huskies career

D

eKALB – Michael Santacaterina received a summons from linebackers coach Tom Matukewicz midway through his first Northern Illinois football training camp in 2010.

Matukewicz left the program three seasons ago, but his words hardly have escaped Santacaterina’s psyche. “ ‘Your safety playing days are over. You’re going down to the box,’ ” Santacaterina said, channeling his former position coach. “That was probably the best thing for my career.”

A redshirt senior from Geneva, Santacaterina still enters his collegiate swan song more inclined to blaze forward through the line one last time than look back. Today’s Boca Raton Bowl against Marshall (5 p.m., ESPN) affords him that chance in favorable weather.

Enduring chatter about his 5-foot10, 205-pound stature early during his run on campus, Santacaterina quickly deflected concerns and developed into a sturdy defender.

In 50 career games, he has collected 174 total tackles, 13½ tackles for loss, three sacks and three interceptions.

None of those figures, he insists, will completely compute until the Huskies are weeks removed from today’s matchup.

“I haven’t done much reflecting; I think I’ll do all that after that game,” Santacaterina said. “This game has gone so fast and there’s so many memories that have been made, so when the time comes and after all is said and done, I’ll look back on it and reflect.”

When he does pause, Santacaterina can do so from his share of vantage points. He served as a weakside linebacker in 2011 but moved all around the outside in other seasons.

In 2014, he has spent most of his snaps in the tackle box unless the opponent uses a four wide receiver set.

Patrolling the boundary position has “been a good home for him,” Huskies defensive coordinator Jay Niemann said. “It fits his skill set very, very well, and he’s performed well there.”

Added Santacaterina: “With our scheme, it’s more of a kind of let the safeties make the plays type thing.

We’re spilling to them. I think being in the box more has benefited me because I’m more low to the ground. I can use my leverage to my advantage.

So I like that a lot.”

Although coaches and teammates will miss Santacaterina – “He’s not the biggest guy in stature, but ... he’s a very, very smart football player and understands his role and his responbility within the scheme,” Niemann said – the family name will return to campus soon enough.

Santacaterina’s younger brother, Daniel, a quarterback who helped Geneva to a Class 7A state quarterfinal

in his senior season, is an NIU recruit.

“He’s been to a lot of the games.

These coaches are always calling him and talking to him and making sure he’s on the right track,” Michael Santacaterina said. “He’s so excited to come out here and have a great career.”

To be sure, the younger Santacaterina will benefit from his brother’s blueprint.

Heard about the Herd: Huskies right tackle Ryan Brown was a St. Charles North freshman when “We Are Marshall” hit theaters in December 2006.

Brown recalls seeing the film adaptation of Marshall’s recovery from a 1970 plane crash that killed most of

the football team, but that’s not all he knows about the Huntington, West Virginia school.

“It’s a real sad story. They did an awesome job turning the program around, you know,” Brown said. “To have great players go through like Chad Pennington and Randy Moss, stuff like that. So it’s a really good program, real historic.”

Marshall finished the regular season 12-1, winning the Conference USA championship. The Thundering Herd’s lone loss – 67-66 to Western Kentucky in overtime – marked one of the more entertaining college games this season.

Senior quarterback Rakeem Cato leads a Marshall spread attack that topped 40 points 10 times this season.

He holds each of the school’s career passing records, including touchdowns (128) and yards (13,798).

Cato would tie an NCAA record if he throws a touchdown pass against the Huskies, having accomplished that feat in 45 consecutive games.

“They’re not super complicated, but they’re very talented, and so they don’t have to be complicated,” Niemann said.

Added Santacaterina: “They’re a great team. Very high-potent offense.

Great quarterback, great long ball. A lot of athletes out on the outside. …

We’re just going to have to do our job, everyone stay in their gap, read our keys. We’ll be fine.”

NIU and Marshall have not met since 2001. Marshall leads the all-time series, 4-3.

Et cetera: Santacaterina began his Huskies career wearing No. 52, but closes it with No. 7, a significant family number. His older sister, Jackie, a recently retired women’s soccer player, has used No. 7 in the past. His cousin, Chicago Fire star Mike Magee, wore the number in his earlier days. In addition, Daniel Santacaterina wore No. 7 at Geneva.

“I think it was my sophomore year, my uncle told me 52 made me look slow,” Michael Santacaterina said.

“So it’s like, I’ve got to get a single digit and it turned out to be seven.” … Santacaterina said he watched Vikings games on High School Cube when he could this fall, and attended a handful in person, including Geneva’s second-round playoff win against Rockton Hononegah. Brown has heard North coach Rob Pomazak, who was not in the program when Brown graduated, would like him to address the team in the offseason. “Next summer, you know, I’ll be free maybe and help out if I can if he wants me to,” Brown said.

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE OTTAWA – Lincoln-Way West girls basketball coach Ryan White hasn’t particularly liked the way that his squad has played in Monday games.

And while a flat performance didn’t prove costly to the unbeaten Warriors in the semifinals of the Ottawa Holiday Tournament, White re-

alizes that a similar effort in today’s gold bracket title game could definitely be problematic.

West used 12-0 runs in each half to remove any late drama in a 59-42 semifinal win against Kaneland. The Warriors (11-0) meet Yorkville in today’s finals.

“We’ve struggled in Monday games and I don’t know

what it is,” White said. “But I’d rather play bad and win than coming out of here with a loss.

I told the girls at the beginning of the year that good teams can win when they play bad and through 26 games, they’re not all going to be perfect. But can you figure out a way to get it done, which we did tonight.”

By JARED BIRCHFIELD editorial@kcchronicle.com MAPLE PARK – After two recuperating wrestlers came through, Geneva appeared to be in command at the halfway point of its meet with Kaneland on Saturday afternoon in a triangular hosted by Kaneland.

With six contests left, the Vikings led the Knights, 30-12.

But Kaneland rallied, won four of the next five matches and trailed by only three points, 3633, at the start of the last contest – the 132-pound bout between Kaneland’s Jacob Shearer and the Vikings’ Colin Parsons.

Shearer battled into the third period, before Parsons pinned him with 1:39 to seal the victory for Geneva, 42-33.

The win also gave the Vikings (9-6) the triangular victory as they defeated Rock Island, 43-31, earlier in the day.

Contributing to the Vikings’ early lead were pins by Mitch Bradberry (170 pounds) and Austin Chaon (195), who both were battling lingering effects of illness.

The fall was Chaon’s second of the day.

The senior also pinned Rock Island’s Josh Davis. Bradberry also won his Rock Island match by a fall.

Two Kaneland forfeits at 225 and 113 weight classes contributed to Geneva’s lead.

“Mitch Bradberry just got over the flu and he’s really hurting, but he came through with two pins for us,” Geneva coach Tom Chernich said.

“Mitch, even though he pinned the Rock Island guy, was in bad shape after the match but

went on its initial 12-0 run, which stretched into the second period. Kaneland managed to close the gap to 22-18 in the second quarter, but the Warriors were able to stretch their lead back to 33-21 at halftime.

Adam Mish, wrestling in only his third match after a shoulder injury, contributed to Kaneland’s comeback, winning the 120-pound match with a pin.

He lost his bout with Rock Island’s Robe McCorkie by a fall.

“It was pretty hard getting over the first one,” Mish said.

“But I ended up getting back up

and pinning the second guy.”

Nine of the 14 bouts in the match were won by pins.

In addition to Bradberry, Chaon and Parson, Brock Perry (152) won by a fall for Geneva.

Kaneland’s Riley Vanik (160), Zac Park (182), Zack Thielk (285) and Austin Kedzie (106) took decisions by pins.

The Knights (9-5) also beat Rock Island, 36-22.

“I thought we were a little sluggish especially in the second match. We just didn’t have the edge that we brought before,” Knights assistant coach Mike Thorgesen said. “Giving up four pins is tough to comeback from especially when you’re giving up two weights.

We had kids that fought hard for us and I’m proud of the effort but it just wasn’t enough today.”

The meet originally was scheduled as a quad but Belvidere North, the fourth school, canceled.

Batavia led for almost the whole game, but Rich South took the lead with just more than 4 minutes to play in the fourth quarter, and costly turnovers plagued the Bulldogs down the stretch to spoil what had been a great defensive effort.

“Without a doubt it was,” Batavia coach Kevin Jensen said when asked if it was his team’s best defensive game of the season so far. “It was just a matter of them making

a couple extra plays. They had a couple of offensive rebounds that if we snagged, that’s the difference. Offensive rebounds and turnovers, those are like four-point swings. About three of those at the end was the difference. Everything we worked on we did better today. I just wish we would have won the game.”

The Bulldogs built a steady 24-16 lead by halftime and were plus-13 with Frazier on the court. Forward Shea Bayram had three assists, while Frazier and Bethany Orman each had four rebounds.

The Stars out-rebounded Batavia heavily in the fourth quarter, particularly on the offensive glass, leading to costly second-chance opportunities.

It was a frustrating loss, given the overall execution the Bulldogs had on the defensive side of the ball throughout the game.

“We did a lot of the things that we wanted to do correctly,” Jensen said. “The passes we worked on, the shots that we took were good shots. The defensive rotations that we worked on were all correct so many times today so I was really proud of them but frustrated that we couldn’t hang on in the end. They had a player that came on really strong that I thought single-handedly put them on their back and got them the lead at the end.”

family for years. It consists of a bed, dresser, dressing table, rocking chair and straight-back chair. There is a sticker on the back of the dresser that reads, “The Upham Mfg. Co., Marshfield, Wisconsin, Manufacturers of Chamber Suits [sic] and Side Boards.”

The drawers to the dresser have little locks and we have the keys. Can you tell us anything about this furniture?

A: William H. Upham and his brother, C.M. Upham, built a sawmill in Marshfield in 1879. In 1881 they opened a furniture factory and veneer mill. Upham Manufacturing Co. was incorporated in 1883. By 1890 the company included a flour mill, grain elevator, general store, railway, waterworks and electric light plant. The 1904 Furniture Journal said the company sold “cheap, medium and high grade chamber suits, odd dressers, chiffoniers, sideboards and buffets.”

Upham Manufacturing was in business until 1927. Your furniture was probably made in the late 1890s or early 1900s. ***

Santa Claus traditionally arrives in his sleigh, but children born in the past 100 years or so have wondered why Santa doesn’t use faster, newer ways to make his Christmas Eve journey.

Writers and toymakers have modernized the Christmas story in several ways - with a train to the North Pole, an airplane, an early car, modern cars and even Santa in a rocket or spaceship. Of course, some still wonder how he can go around the world in one night while stopping to deliver gifts. One rare toy made in prewar Japan has Santa in an open car that’s decorated with pictures of toys, children and a Christmas tree.

The car has a clockwork drive wound with a key. It can zoom across the floor. The 7-inch-long toy sold for $37,760 at a 2013 Bertoia auction. *** Q: Our family has complete collections of both Bing & Grondahl and Royal Copenhagen Christmas plates.

We understand only a limited number of these plates have much value, but we would like to know the value of the collection as a whole. Is it greater than the sum of its parts?

A: Bing & Grondahl, a Danish porcelain factory, began making annual Christmas plates in 1895. The company became part of Royal Copenhagen in 1987. Royal Copenhagen, another Danish porcelain factory, had introduced its own series of Christmas plates in 1908. Many of the old plates can be found on the resale market. The first Bing & Grondahl Christmas plate, “Behind the Frozen Window, 1895,” sold at auction for $2,320 in 2012.

The first Royal Copenhagen Christmas plate, “Madonna & Child, 1908,” sold for $2,722 in 2011. But most Christmas plates sell for about $20. Only the very earliest plates and those made during World War II are rare and sell for more. We have never seen a complete set of either company’s plates offered for sale. ** * Q: I have a Bols Ballerina liquor bottle with a figural windup ballerina inside. When it’s wound up, it plays music and the ballerina spins and moves her legs. A label on the bottom says “Le Bleu Danube” and “Bottle and Unit Made in France.” The liquor has evaporated a little, but the ballerina works perfectly. The label says “Sale Distributors for the USA, Brown Forman Import Company, New York 16, New York.” Does this bottle have any value?

A: Bols Ballerina bottles were made between 1957 and 1978. They came filled with different kinds of liquor made by Lucas Bols, a Dutch distillery. Two versions were made, with the ballerina wearing either a red skirt or a white skirt. The Bols family opened a distillery in Amsterdam in 1575, making Lucas Bols the world’s oldest distillery brand. There have been several changes in ownership, but the company is still in business. BrownForman offered the Bols Ballerina bottle as a Christmas item in 1959. It was produced in limited quantities at that time but proved so popular that thousands more were made. Collectors like unique bottles. A full bottle in its original box sells for the highest price.

Having a vasectomy reversal is a possibility Dear Doctor K: I had a vasectomy many years ago. I’ve since remarried, and my new wife wants to have children.

Can my vasectomy be reversed?

Dear Reader: A vasectomy is a minor surgical procedure that is done to make a man sterile (unable to father children).

Normally, sperm – the male reproductive cells that fertilize a woman’s egg – are made in the testicle. Sperm travel away from the testicle through a tube called the vas deferens. There are two vas deferens, one for each testicle on each side. The vas deferens connect with a reservoir where the sperm is held, ready to be ejaculated during sex. The sperm also mixes with secretions from the prostate gland that keep the sperm alive. When the sperm is ejaculated, it travels through another tube, the urethra, inside the penis.

A vasectomy cuts or blocks the vas deferens. Once the vas deferens are cut or blocked, sperm cannot pass from the testicle to the reservoir where semen and secretions from the prostate gland are stored.

During ejaculation, this sperm-containing fluid is ejected through the penis during

In a traditional vasectomy, the surgeon uses a scalpel to make small incisions in the skin of the scrotum near the base of the penis. (The scrotum is the fleshy sac that contains the testicles.) The incisions allow the surgeon to reach the vas deferens in each testicle.

The vas deferens are cut or blocked to prevent sperm from traveling. The surgeon may cut the vas deferens and tie the ends, burn the tubes with a hot tool, or block them with surgical clips. The incisions in the scrotum are then closed with two or three small stitches.

The other surgical option, no-scalpel vasectomy, is less invasive. Only tiny incisions are needed. The surgeon makes one or two punctures to access

the vas deferens. The puncture is widened slightly, then the surgeon cuts or blocks each vas deferens. The puncture site can be covered with a tiny dressing. No stitches are needed.

A vasectomy is intended to produce permanent sterilization. Special microsurgery can reverse a vasectomy and restore fertility in some cases.

But there are no guarantees that fertility or vasectomy reversal will be successful. Vasectomy reversal is a delicate, expensive procedure. And it is only successful in about 60 to 70 percent of cases.

Why would a man want to reverse a vasectomy? Often, a man and woman have fathered all the children they want to have, but want to continue to have sex. So, a vasectomy is performed. But then the situation changes. The couple separates, for whatever reason, and the man’s new partner wants to have children. Fortunately, most of the time, the new couple can get their wish.

Father lacks parenting skills Dr. Wallace: My 15-year-old brother is always getting into trouble at school and even with the law. He has already been suspended four times from school. My dad had to talk a store owner out of pressing charges once when he shoplifted some stuff from a local store.

Now my brother has been suspended from school for bullying a boy and taking his lunch money. If he wouldn’t give it to him, my brother was pushing him around and threatening to beat him up on his way home from school.

Even though he is my brother, I dislike him because he is a despicable person and will probably wind up in jail even before he is an adult. I’ve told my dad that he should be more strict with him, but my dad said he hated his own dad because he was too strict and beat him when he got in trouble.

He doesn’t want his own son to fear and hate him.

I’m totally embarrassed at school to be known as his sister.

I’ve told my mother I’m sorry over and over, but she keeps giving me lectures on the evils of smoking, and now I try to avoid being in the same room with her whenever I can.

In this deal, South is in four spades. West leads a low diamond.

What should East do after winning the trick with his queen?

In the auction, North’s four-diamond rebid was a splinter, showing four spades, game-going values and a singleton (or void) in diamonds.

At trick two, East did not like the idea of leading a club away from his king, or a heart into dummy’s ace-queen, or his singleton trump; so he played the diamond king.

Now, though, South ruffed in the dummy, played a spade to his ace (the right play to allow for either opponent holding all four trumps) and ran the club eight. The defenders had no answer. Declarer lost one spade, one diamond and one club.

West was not amused. He pointed out that East could see two minor-suit tricks, so had to hope that West had a spade trick and that they could gain a heart trick. With that in mind, East had to lead a low heart at trick two. West would have covered South’s card as cheaply as possible, and the defenders would have been ahead in the race.

Declarer probably would have won with dummy’s heart queen, played a spade to his ace, and taken the club finesse.

But East could have won and led another heart, driving out dummy’s ace. South would have cashed dummy’s spade king and turned to clubs, but West would have ruffed the third round and played a heart to defeat the contract.
