OUT AND ABOUT ‘Winter Birds’ program set at Creek Bend ST. CHARLES – A “Winter Birds” program is set for 10 a.m. Sunday at Creek Bend Nature Center, 37W700 Dean St., St. Charles.

Forest Preserve District of Kane County naturalists will lead the 90-minute program at the center, which is within LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve.

The program is for ages 10 and above.

Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Winter Olympics at Hickory Knolls ST. CHARLES – The Hickory Knolls Discovery Center’s third annual Winter Olympics will take place from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Jan. 5, at the center, 3795 Campton Hills Road, St. Charles.

It is for those ages 6 and older, who will compete in snowshoe relays and other games, then toast the ‘closing ceremonies’ with hot chocolate.

If the weather does not permit outdoor activities, program will be held indoors with ice cubes, cotton balls and marshmallows substituting for nature’s snow and ice.

Children must be accompanied by an adult. The fee is $10 for residents and $15 for nonresidents. Advance registration is required at www.stcnature.org.

Salvation Army hosts annual holiday food, toy distribution

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Volunteers were hustling through the Salvation Army Tri-City Corps in St. Charles on Saturday, as more than 600 families were expected for the organization’s annual Christmas food, winter coat, toy and book distribution, an all-day event.

The parking lot was packed, and clients were lined up according to their scheduled times. Though the center was bustling with activity, it was quiet and orderly as each guest was shepherded along by a volunteer with a clipboard.

“We get them signed up and an appointment time, so everyone has slots so they’re not waiting all day,” said Angel Ayala, office administrator for the Salvation Army in St. Charles.

Organization is the key, she said, as staff and volunteers start meeting in September for the Christmas distribution.

“Lots of planning, lots of volunteers,” Ayala said.

New toys were everywhere, organized according to age and gender with Elmo and Super Grover for small children, plastic trucks for boys and makeup kits for teen girls.

Among the volunteers was Jim Womac of Elgin, who was in charge of sorting the books and helping people get a book in the right age group.

“I deal with a lot of disadvantaged people that I work with the Salvation Army,” Womac said. “And this is an extension of that in mind, in helping those who are less fortunate.”

In another area, volunteers Randolph and Bari Behnken of St. Charles were folding clothes and helping clients pick out the right sizes for their needs.

“I’m trying to just generally greet people and be helpful to them – and wish them Merry Christmas,” Randolph Behnken said. “As a believer in Jesus, I just feel this is what I need to be doing and I’m glad to be helping our community.”

Bari Behnken said they were new to St. Charles, having just moved back to Illinois after 43 years in Kentucky, and wanted to be involved in the community.

Among the donated items that so impressed Bari Behnken are handmade sweaters.

“I’m a knitter so I know … somebody has been really sweet with their knitting hours,” she said.

New coats are an important part of the Salvation Army’s distribution, Ayala said, which are sponsored by the St. Charles Breakfast Rotary.

Maj. Mary Hammerly, the toy shop coordinator, said the area is laid out like a store, marked for age and gender appropriateness. Each child gets two brand-new toys and a new coat, she said. And each family gets a new game, something every-

one can play.

“When our guests come, they just are so pleased and happy to see what’s here,” Hammerly said. “In fact, a lady asked specifically if we had a Dora [the Explorer] stove for her little girl. And I was able to give her one, and she was so excited.”

Many times clients ask for something specific, and Hammerly said they often have it because the community has been so generous in providing the toys.

Library holiday sing-along puts participants in Christmas mood

BATAVIA – Three-yearold Marie Hegele has been listening to the song “Jingle Bell Rock” a lot this Christmas season.

So it was no surprise to see her breaking out in dance as singer/guitarist Tom Malouf strapped on his guitar and started singing “Jingle Bell Rock” Sunday at Batavia Public Library’s holiday sing-along.

“We listen to ‘Jingle Bell Rock’ a lot at home and in the car,” said her mother, Rachel Hegele, of St. Charles. “This is a fun way to celebrate the holidays.”

Malouf treated the crowd to an hour full of holiday favorites. He also elicited the audience’s help in singing several songs, including “The Twelve Days of Christmas.”

He was joined on stage by his daughter, Beth, on several songs, and put on his best Elvis Presley impression for the song “Blue Christmas,” which the late singer recorded for a 1957 Christmas album.

The song “Silver Bells” took Bartlett resident Bob Burns down memory lane.

“I remember singing it when I was in elementary school,” he said.

A diverse attack eased any heavy lifting throughout the Saints’ 72-49 Upstate Eight Conference River Division win, boosting East’s confidence with seemingly every shot.

“We had a lot of penetration in their ‘D,’ and we just found a lot of open shots and kick-outs and we made our shots,” Saints senior guard Zach Manibog said.

East (5-4, 3-2 UEC River) led by as many as 28 points after halftime and finished 23 of 51 (45 percent) from the field.

The defense created 25 turnovers, as a deep core of small, quick guards persistently harrassed Batavia (27, 0-4), which suffered its sixth straight loss.

That combination added up to several flashy fast breaks.

One in the middle of the third quarter particularly stood out: Dom Adduci’s behind-theback feed to Cole Gentry, who drilled an open 3-pointer.

“It was just kind of an instinctual thing. I looked at Cole, he kind of looked at me, and I was like, ‘All right, might as well throw a behindthe-back pass,’ because I didn’t really want to give away that I was passing to him,” Adduci said.

Adduci scored a game-high 24 points to lead four Saints in double figures. Gentry added 12, while James McQuillan and reserve Jake Asquini tallied 10 apiece.

Batavia, which struggled to keep pace in a 70-49 loss Friday at St. Charles North, received its top production from reserve guard Tyler Lovestrand (13 points). Micah Coffey followed with 11.

The Bulldogs open holiday tournament play at Elgin today, a few hours after East tips off at Proviso West.

Alternating success from distance and on drives to the basket, East led by as many as 16 in the first quarter.

Asquini helped inflate the advantage with a pair of quick 3-pointers in the second quarter, but Lovestrand eventually equaled him. Lovestrand went a perfect 3 for 3 from the field before halftime, including a pair of treys. A Danny Pieczynski 3 with 36 seconds left in the half brought the Bulldogs within nine, but that’s when East displayed another wrinkle to its offense.

AJ Washington’s long jumper from just inside the arc was good from the right baseline, giving East a 33-22 halftime cushion.

Washington sent the crowd into a deeper frenzy just over a minute into the third quarter, unleashing a dunk that temporarily delayed the game because it bent the rim.

“The funny thing was, I had to shoot free throws right after that dunk, when he bent it

down. When they were fixing it, I was like, ‘Oh, Jeez. What the heck?’ ” Adduci said. “But, you know, that happens sometimes in practice, especially with AJ being the dunker that he is. So, I mean, we’re used to it, but that was a monster dunk that got our team going, and that was exactly what we needed.”

Batavia could have done without the play, but still showed flashes of coming untracked.

“We have to take care of the ball better, we have to rebound better, and those are team things that we can do,” Nazos said. “It’s not one individual, it’s all of us.”

Both coaches emptied their benches. Although the Saints’ student section chanted for him, coach Pat Woods did not oblige by summoning senior forward David Mason, a starter who still is mending from a broken foot.

“We were hoping to have him back tonight, but it’s just not ready yet. But he’ll be back soon. Just needs a little more time,” Woods said. “We plan to start the new year with him.”

North was the top qualifying girls team with a score of 4,509. East finished third with 4,115 points. Geneva (2,635) finished eighth in the 10-team field.

Both St. Charles boys teams just missed competing in the championship team round. East finished sixth among the 12 boys teams with a score of 4,634, while North came in seventh, tallying a 4,570. Geneva (4,395) took ninth place.

“I’m not disappointed,” East boys coach Steve Dessauer said. “We still have a lot of things to learn. We still have to work on our spares. We just got step up our game a little better.”

WEST CHICAGO – Appropriately, the team with the first two school colors matching those in the name of the Black and Blue and Orange Bowling Tournament competed in the team title games on Saturday.

St. Charles North, with team colors of black and blue, topped Neuqua Valley in a two-game series to take the first-place girls’ trophy at Bowling Green Sports Center.

“I’m very happy. We’ve been bowling very well this season,” North coach Lindsay Madej said. “It’s a testament to our season that we are still bowling this well. There’s no letdown even though (Christmas) break is on peoples’ mind. They were very focused.”

The St. Charles East girls finished fourth in the team competition.

Black, blue and orange were also well-represented in awards handed out for the morning’s individual competitions.

East’s Erin Heuer took

first place for individual high game with a score of 245. The junior also took second place for the individual series high with a total of 627.

“The support from my teammates really kept me going,” Heuer said.

“She was lower than her usual average the past couple of weeks,” added East girls coach Tom Cole. “We adjusted some things. It helped, so now she is doing really well.”

North’s Ashley England garnered second place for a single game (242) while teammate Bobbi Jo Buhlman finished third for high series (611).

England attributed her success to using a heavier bowling ball. The senior went from a 12- to a 14-pounder.

“I got a new ball which seems to be helping a lot,” England said. “I’m hitting my marks.”

Dean Mudlong of East tied for third with Curtis Majka of Elgin for boys’ high game with scores of 255.

Lyons’ Mike Kicmal took top honors for both individual (268) and series (711) scores.

Dear Abby: I am a woman in an exclusive, committed relationship with “Vince.”

We have talked about a future together and getting married.

My only issue is I can’t seem to keep him off of dating sites.

Even when I catch Vince red-handed, he’ll deny it or blame it on his friend “using his ID.” I have asked him over and over to delete the sites, but he won’t.

He continues to tell me he’s in love with me and wants only me. He says I’m the woman of his dreams.

Thomas Fuller, a prolific English writer who died in 1661, said, “Learning makes a man fit company for himself.”

Bridge learning makes a man or woman fit company for partner.

Bridge bidding also revolves around fit – fit is fantastic; misfit is miserable. For example, look only at the North hand. West opens one spade, North passes, East raises to two spades, South makes a takeout double, and West jumps to four spades. What should North do?

The North hand is good news and bad news. It has 10 high-card points when it might have had none. And all of those points are in the suits where partner has promised length. But the balanced nature of the hand and doubleton spade suggest that there might be three or four losers (although West’s jump to game with relatively few points suggests a lot of trumps).

However, bidding has two potential pluses: Five of a minor might make; and even if it would not, perhaps the opponents will misjudge and bid five spades, which surely will be too high.

So, North ought to bid – but what?

He should advance with four no-trump, showing at least two places to play and asking partner to select the trump suit. (It cannot be Blackwood; how could North be thinking about a slam?)

Here, South would bid five clubs. If left there, South will probably ruff the spade-king lead, draw trumps ending in his hand, play a diamond to dummy’s queen, and return a diamond to his 10. If so, he will make the contract.

And if West bids five spades, North can double and collect 500 for down two.
