Long lines at Geneva brewery Saturday Penrose Brewery draws crowds with first bottle release

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Not everyone was running around Saturday trying to get their Christmas shopping done.

Those lining up outside Penrose Brewing Company in Geneva were rewarded with an early Christmas present in the form of the brewery’s first two barrel-aged wild ales. Among those in line was John Majestic, 26, of St. Charles.

“I know the beer is going to be good,” Majestic said.

“It’s a good brewery.”

Also in line was Bill Owens, 40, of Batavia. He is a regular customer at Penrose, which opened in March.

“I like that it is local,” Owens said. “It’s really close to my house, and the beer is very good.”

Although the brewery didn’t open its doors until 11 a.m., people started lining up at 7 a.m. to get ahold of the ales, said Penrose brewmas-

“It is more than we could have imagined,” said Korder, of Batavia, who opened Penrose with Geneva resident Eric Hobbs. “We knew the beers were good.”

The fact that the event was held the Saturday before Christmas was a coincidence, Korder said.

“The beer was ready,” he said. “We started putting the beers in barrels after we opened.”

Those standing in the chilly air were able to warm themselves with coffee from FreshGround Roasting, located a few doors down from Penrose. Nobel House in Geneva also provided food at the

event.

“We wanted to partner with other businesses,” Korder said. “We wanted people to enjoy themselves.”

Among those enjoying themselves was St. Charles Township resident and home brewer Lee Haggas, who said that Penrose has been a “great addition to the area.”

Korder said he appreciated the response Penrose has been receiving. The brewery’s tap room Saturday was bustling with activity.

“The local community has been getting on board with us,” he said.

Plans are to do another release in January of two more beers, Korder said.

Illinois attorney general warns of utility scam KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com The Illinois Commerce Commission and Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan have issued an alert to utility customers about a scam targeting residents in the Chicago area and Northern Illinois in which someone claiming to be a utility employee asks for immediate payment of a bill either at a customer’s door, over the telephone or by email, according to a news release.

The ICC and the Attorney General’s Office have received complaints from utility customers about scam artists claiming to be utility representatives, telling customers that their service will be disconnected unless payment is made directly to the scammers. The

scam artist may direct the consumer to purchase a prepaid credit card, a “cash card,” and to call them back with the personal identification number, the release stated.

The stories can vary, for example, with the scammer saying that the customer’s billing cycle has changed and payment must be made immediately, that the account is past due and payment can be made to them directly to avoid disconnection of the utility service, or the customer’s previous payment was rejected or never received.

Complaints have doubled in the past year, with victims paying up to $8,000, the release stated. Complaints indicate the scammers may be targeting small businesses and Latino residents in particular.

“Any time you are asked upfront for money in an unsolicited call or knock at your door, that is a universal red flag for a scam,” Madigan stated in the release. “Utility companies do not go door-to-door collecting payments. Instead utility customers should report any solicitation immediately to the Attorney General’s Office, the ICC or their utility company directly.”

ICC Chairman Doug Scott noted the significant increase in customer complaints about these scams and urged consumers to protect themselves by contacting their utility or the ICC. “We want all consumers and businesses who feel they are being pressured or scammed to end the conversation with potential scammers

and call their utility service provider or the ICC Consumer Services Division to check out the claims,” Scott stated in the release. “You do not have to sign anything or give personal information to anyone calling you on the phone, sending you an email or showing up at your door. If you feel something’s not quite right about the situation, get the utility’s phone number off your bill, call the utility and ask for help.”

Madigan and the ICC offer these reminders to utility customers: • Never provide personal information to anyone who comes to the door or calls you claiming to be a representative of the utility.

• Contact the utility at the phone number listed on your

bill to confirm the caller or the representative at your home is a verifiable employee of the utility. Do not call a different number suggested by the potential scammer and do not let them into your home.

• Utility field personnel in Illinois do not take payments from consumers. Be on guard with anyone who asks for your personal information, or says you must pay immediately and suggests a method to get the money quickly.

• If you suspect you have been scammed, have a suspicious incident to report or have questions, contact Madigan’s Consumer Fraud Hotline at 800-386-5438 or file a complaint at www.illinoisattorneygeneral.gov. Consumers can also file complaints with the ICC at 800-524-0795.

ST. CHARLES – As the overcast sky darkened Sunday evening, a fire in St. Charles Township burned brightly and a crowd of people gathered around it for warmth while celebrating the winter solstice.

“It’s a beautiful night to celebrate the first night of winter,” said Ben Katzen, a naturalist with the Kane County Forest Preserve District.

The crowd marked the change of seasons at LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve with a campfire, a hike and the singing of such holiday tunes as “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.”

But Katzen, along with assistant naturalist Josh Libman, made sure participants learned something, too.

“We are here to celebrate a timeless tradition,” Katzen said about 17 minutes before the 4:22 p.m. sunset and 58 minutes before winter would officially begin at 5:03 p.m.

The season’s trademark cold weather isn’t caused by Earth being farther from the sun, he said, noting the planet is actually 3 million miles closer to the sun now than in summer.

Rather, he said, the chill is due to the Earth’s 23.5-degree tilt. The Northern Hemisphere is tilted away from the sun, he said.

As participants set out on a hike that would take them along Ferson Creek and into an oak woodland, Katzen said they would return with something.

By JARED BIRCHFIELD editorial@kcchronicle.com MAPLE PARK – After two recuperating wrestlers came through, Geneva appeared to be in command at the halfway point of its meet with Kaneland on Saturday afternoon in a triangular hosted by Kaneland.

With six contests left, the Vikings led the Knights, 3012. But Kaneland rallied, won four of the next five matches and trailed by only three points, 36-33, at the start of the last contest – the 132-pound bout between Kaneland’s Jacob Shearer and the Vikings’ Colin Parsons.

Shearer battled into the third period, before Parsons pinned him with 1:39 to seal the victory for Geneva, 42-33.

The win also gave made the Vikings (9-6) the triangular victory as they defeated Rock Island, 43-31, earlier in the day.

“I thought we were a little sluggish especially in the second match. We just didn’t have the edge that we brought before,” Knights assistant coach Mike Thorgesen said. “Giving up four pins is tough to comeback from especially when you’re giving up two weights.

We had kids that fought hard for us and I’m proud of the effort but it just wasn’t enough today.”

The meet originally was scheduled as a quad but Belvidere North, the fourth school, canceled.

He stands by that philosophy, although doing so might have accelerated the rate at which the position wore on him. Crabel stepped down Thursday as the Rockets’ coach after four seasons on the job.

Crabel said he still loves coaching and would like to

continue somewhere as an assistant, but all the organizational trappings of the job became overbearing.

“The big push when I took that job was to make us more of community and more of what we call our football family,” Crabel said. “We have a father-son steak night, a mother-son banquet, and those aren’t things I ever regret doing.

I think they were great for our program … but when you put those things in place, you’re overseeing those things all the time along with all the other things you do.

“I think all of those things are important, and just on the education side there are new things we have to get done in dealing with Common Core and all new assessments we do are very time-consuming, as well.”

Crabel, a business teacher at Central, said the notion of stepping down has been on his mind from late this season on, and that he had ongoing dialogue with athletic director Steve Diversey about the possibility before finalizing his decision. He said Rockets players were not blindsided by

the news.

“The majority of them know I have been considering this,” Crabel said. “It was not a secret to them that I was considering doing this.”

The Rockets finished 6-4 this season, falling in the first round of the IHSA Class 5A playoffs against Sterling. Crabel went 22-16 in his four years with the Rockets.

Crabel has coached in various capacities since 1986 at Eureka College as well as Herscher, Genoa-Kingston, Byron and Burlington Central, taking only one year off.

Crabel, who has a strong, defensive background, said he’d be open to remaining on the next coaching staff at Central but isn’t married to the idea.

“I don’t know I’d say it’s a preference,” Crabel said. “The big thing when a new coach comes in, that’s who would have to be the most comfortable with that. A new coach is going to have to come in and establish it as his program, and not having any idea who that is, that may or may not be something they’re interested in.”

Frazier hits 1,000 points, but Bulldogs fade late in loss OSWEGO – Hannah Frazier had a milestone afternoon but a sluggish second half saw the Batavia girls basketball team drop the fifth-place game in the Hoops for the Troops Tournament on Saturday, a 47-42 loss to Rich South.

Frazier reached 1,000 career points on a turnaround jumper midway through the first quarter, getting fouled in the process and converting on the three-point play a moment later, helping Batavia to a 13-7 lead heading to the second quarter.

Frazier finished with another double-double, scoring 31 points and pulling down 11 boards in the contest.

Batavia led for almost the entirety of the game, but Rich South took the lead with just more than 4 minutes to play in the fourth quarter and costly turnovers plagued the Bulldogs down the stretch to spoil what had been a great defensive effort.

“Without a doubt it was,” Batavia coach Kevin Jensen said when asked if it was his team’s best defensive game of the season so far. “It was just a matter of them making a couple extra plays. They had a couple of offensive rebounds that if we snagged, that’s the difference.

Offensive rebounds and turnovers, those are like four-point swings. About three of those at the end was the difference.

Everything we worked on we did better today. I just wish we would have won the game.”

The Bulldogs built a steady 24-16 lead by halftime and were plus-13 with Frazier on the court. Forward Shea Bayram had three assists, while Frazier and Bethany Orman each had four rebounds.

The Stars out-rebounded Batavia heavily in the fourth quarter, particularly on the offensive glass, leading to costly second-chance opportunities.

It was a frustrating loss, given the overall execution the Bulldogs had on the defensive side of the ball throughout the game.

“We did a lot of the things that we wanted to do correctly,” Jensen said. “The passes we worked on, the shots that we took were good shots. The defensive rotations that we worked on were all correct so many times today so I was really proud of them but frustrated that we couldn’t hang on in the end. They had a player that came on really strong that I thought single-handedly put them on their back and got them the lead at the end.”

For a young team, closing out games will be another learning experience, Orman

said.

“I think we just mentally need to shut a team out,” Orman said. “We were within eight basically the whole game.

We just have to cut the gap and pull through at the end.”

The loss spoiled the celebration for Frazier, whose parents and grandparents were on hand to watch the junior become the fifth Bulldogs scorer to reach the 1,000 point plateau.

Per usual, Frazier spread the praise around, crediting her teammates with getting her the ball. Batavia finished with 12 assists in the contest.

“It’s not really a personal thing, it’s a team thing,” Frazier said. “You can’t score without your teammates passing you the ball. But it’s pretty exciting.”

Frazier reached the upper echelon that includes leading all-time Batavia scorer and 2014 graduate Liza Fruendt, who finished her career with 1,921 points.

“It’s fun to see,” Frazier said. “I know Liza’s broken the record and I saw the amount of work she put in, so that’s motivation for me. She’s set a great example to keep on working hard and not lose focus.”

The 6-foot-2-inch Frazier was among the tallest players in the tournament, a matchup nightmare, and was named to the all-tournament team follow-

ing the game.

“She’s a stud,” Jensen said.

“There’s no simple way around it. Probably other than the Marian Catholic game, she’s probably been the best player on the floor. I don’t think she gets treated that way but she is.

She’s usually the biggest, strongest and best player on the floor. It’s just a matter of what we can do around her to get her opportunities so she can continue to flourish because everyone is just going to put three (defenders) around her and say, ‘I’m going to stop her.’ ” Frazier, now sitting at 1,027, is on path to surpass Fruendt’s total, Jensen said.

We don’t score much; we score enough but as a team we need to focus on defense because that will be one of our main strengths.”

I feel 18 years isn’t long enough to figure all that out. I am an introvert, and I would really like to open up a cute little cafe in New York when I am older. But every time I tell someone this is what I’d like to do, they ask how I’m going to make money at it. They’re right – I can’t make a living off a coffee shop, especially with the high cost of living in New York.

I’m lost and don’t know what to do. I have less than a year to figure things out, and it’s starting to stress me.

Please give me some advice.

I need a friend. – Lost In Texas Dear Lost: You not only need a friend, you also need a counselor to help you find direction. If there isn’t one at your school, consider discussing this with a career counselor at a nearby university or community college. Some courses in business administration would be valuable for you so you can learn the nuts and bolts about running a business and avoid common mistakes that might cause yours to fail.

Some classes in commercial cooking would also be helpful. If there isn’t a trade school nearby that offers them, consider working for a year or two in the restaurant industry to see how it functions. Many of the best chefs in the world started out that way, and you will learn quickly if this is something you really want to pursue.

P.S. Being an introvert doesn’t have to stop you, if you partner with someone who’s a people person to work the front of the shop and teach you the art of “schmoozing.”

We work 24/7. No days off, no breaks. It’s not an easy life. You would not believe how nice it is to receive a message from family or friends.

Don’t get me wrong, I have a loving family who support me and everything I do. When I first got here, I’d get a message from them at least once a week. But now that I am seven months into a 12-month deployment, it has been almost two months since I have gotten anything.

Now, I know if I reach out and send a message – which I have done – I’ll get replies, but am I wrong for not wanting to have to do that? Is it wrong to wish that I could come in, relax, and find a message waiting for me? I know they love me and are busy with their lives, but sometimes it seems that I am forgotten.

It would be comforting to know someone is thinking about me. This was even more clear-cut with honors in all of the three-card suits. Four hearts can be made, but requires guessing spades.

South would have been able to win East’s diamond shift, drive out the club ace and cruise home.
