••• On Wednesday, Batavia High School senior Matt Puttin completed his semester-long internship with the Kane County Chronicle.

District 304 amends levy to ensure special ed funds

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva District 304 board members met in a special meeting Friday to amend its 2013 tax levy in the categorical area of special education.

The board voted 5-0 with two absent to approve levying $1.9 million in transportation, which initially was approved in a levy for special education Dec. 16. Board members Leslie Juby and Mike McCormick were absent.

Officials said because of a lawsuit filed in another district in which the special ed levy

was requested after not being filed for a few years, it was better to move to another area of the levy.

Finance Director Donna Oberg said the action would not change the dollar amount of the district’s 1 percent levy increase request of nearly $80 million. In January, officials will move the $1.9 million levied for transportation to the special education fund in a permanent transfer, Oberg said.

“When a district has not levied for special ed for three years, then what’s in question is – and it’s a gray area in the law; it’s an interpretation

– then they may or may not be able to levy in special ed. Or it may have to go to public referendum,” Superintendent Kent Mutchler said. “That’s being challenged in court ... to be clarified. And actually, our school attorney is involved in a case like that.”

Mutchler said to be clear, officials are taking advice from their school attorneys and taking action so as not to risk the district being sued over it.

The district had not levied separately for special education for three years, because its cost was covered in the education fund, officials said. But with the reduction in equal-

ized assessed valuation in the district, its education levy reached a limit, board member Kelly Nowak said.

Board president Mark Grosso said the district spends more than $11 million on special education. Putting it in a separate levy allows the district to capture enough to meet the need, while not inviting a legal challenge or a referendum.

“It is not going to change the bottom line,” Grosso said.

“We will levy this in our transportation fund, and after next year, we will do an interfund transfer and put it back in special ed.”

Keeping an eye, and ear, out for chickadees GOOD NATURED Pam Otto Well, it happened again the other day, just as it does every year about this time: The realization that Christmas is less than a week away. A smattering of hours to accomplish all the tasks I’d vowed, last year at this time, to have finished by Thanksgiving “at the latest.” And yes, I really did say that.

Seriously, where does the time go?

While I may still have time to start making a list, I know right now I can’t be checking it twice; I’ve got to hit the ground running. Now, if only I could remember, which Geneva shop is it that has those cute spider earrings? Where in St. Charles did I spot that antique pin? And which aisle at Blue Goose has the fruitcake ingredients?

As I sit here pondering what my next move should be, one notion keeps rising above the swirl that is my holiday-addled brain: This mission would be so much easier, if only I were a chickadee.

Chickadees, those blackcapped, winged wonders so prevalent at this time of year, are experts when it comes to spatial relations. They might not care which local stores are open late, and I’m sure they don’t give two tweets over which ones offer complimentary gift wrapping, but they sure know how to find what they need to survive, even thrive, in our harsh winter weather.

Primary among those needs is food – the seeds, nuts and dormant arthropods that provide needed energy. To make sure they’ve got enough to eat, chickadees employ a strategy called scatter hoarding. That is, they cache thousands of food items across the tens of acres that is their foraging territory. Then, when supplies are scarce, all the birds have to do is retrace their steps (or shall we say flaps?) to find the bits and morsels they’ve stashed away.

Chickadees are master cachers, stashing as many as 100,000 food items over the course of the year. er than relying on chance to find a sunflower seed here or a peanut chip there, chickadees actually recall where they put them. It’s the avian equivalent of finding thousands of carefully placed needles in hundreds of haystacks. And to folks like me, who struggle to remember where we set down our gloves, the feat is truly astounding.

The key to the bird’s

success lies in a part of its brain called the hippocampus. In chickadees, as it is with most vertebrates, the hippocampus is responsible for keeping track of spatial organization and memory.

But unlike the hippocampi of most other creatures, that of the chickadee changes in size, growing by nearly 30 percent during the fall months to accommodate its increased

need for recall and navigation.

In spring, when food becomes more plentiful, this brain region returns to its previous dimensions.

Studies have shown that chickadees can cache as many as 100,000 food items over a year’s time and, during winter, can remember the locations of thousands of individual food items for a period of weeks and even

months. It’s also been proven that the birds are returning to their own caches, not simply pecking at whatever food they happen to come across.

Further, research indicates that chickadees know when their food has been pilfered (losses of up to 20 percent a day can occur when rodents or other bird species are factored in) and will learn to avoid such “high crime” areas.

One last thing that’s great about chickadees – they’re everywhere. North American scientists have found them to be ideal research subjects because they are year-round residents, their numbers are plentiful and they have little fear of humans.

You, too, can observe their captivating behaviors, and you don’t have to go far to do so. Look out a window that faces a bird feeder or, better yet, bundle up and take a walk in one of our area’s great natural areas. Chances are the chickadees will be out in force, feeding, foraging and caching for the future. Don’t forget to listen for their distinctive “chicka-dee-dee-dee” alarm call – a signal that, even if you have yet to spot them, they sure as heck have seen you.

I’ll be keeping an eye, and ear, out for chickadees today as I head out on my appointed rounds. I’m hopeful that the expedition will start shortly.

But first, I need to remember where I put the car keys ...

Batavia Teen Center Pre-Lit LED Artificial Christmas Trees Park district seeking student feedback KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com The Batavia Park District will be seeking feedback from local teenagers, with hopes to reinvent the Batavia Teen Center. The park district will host a series of focus groups with local middle and high school-aged students, according to a news release.

High school students are invited to attend a group session. Focus groups will meet from 7 to 8 p.m. Jan. 7 and Jan. 15, at the Peg Bond Center, 151 Island Ave., Batavia.

Middle school students are invited to attend sessions from 7 to 8 p.m. Jan. 8 and Jan. 14, also at the Peg Bond Center.

“We’re looking to revamp our program portfolio to meet the needs and wants of the teens in the community,” recreation supervisor Kristin Bykowski said in the release.

“I want to listen to their ideas and learn more about what they would like the teen cen-

ter to become.”

The park district said in the release that the teen center had been a destination for local teens, and that “The Hub” was held as an after school drop-in program.

During the summer months, teens could participate in Club Teen.

During school breaks, the teen center was the site for a variety of activities, including crafts, sports, contests and dances, but the release stated, “teen trends have greatly changed and evolved.”

“The Batavia Teen Center is hoping to roll with those changes and reinvent itself according to what local teens want,” the release stated, adding that “staff hopes to gain insight into the types of recreation opportunities teens would like to see.”

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com NORTH AURORA – A 25-year-old North Aurora man on Friday pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and agreed to an 11-year sentence in the Illinois Department of Corrections in the August 2012 stabbing death of his father.

Martrell Harris was given credit for at least 488 days served in the Kane Coun-

ty Jail, according to a news release issued by the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office. He has been held in the Kane County jail in lieu of $1.8 million bail. Bond was revoked upon conviction.

The incident took place at 10 a.m. Aug. 20, 2012, after a series of heated arguments between Martrell Harris, his father, Michael Harris, and several family members. Michael Harris and his wife began to argue in the upstairs

The argument turned physical, and Martrell Harris pulled the knife out of his back pocket and stabbed his father in the chest, killing him.

“After consulting with the family members of the victim, Michael Harris, we be-

lieve this is an appropriate outcome to this tragic case,” Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon said in the release. “I hope this guilty plea and sentence helps the Harris family find a sense of peace and justice.”

Kane County Circuit Judge John A. Barsanti accepted the plea.

The case was prosecuted by Kane County Assistant State’s Attorney David Belshan.

ST. CHARLES – St. Charles Police Chief Jim Lamkin doesn’t much care for the limelight.

But on Friday afternoon, such community leaders as Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon, St. Charles Fire Chief Joe Schelstreet and Lazarus House Executive Director Liz Eakins put him in the spotlight during a farewell reception in the City Council Chambers.

Lamkin is ending his 10year career with St. Charles on Dec. 27 to lead the Schaumburg Police Department.

Speakers recognized Lamkin for his leadership, professionalism, honesty and, among other qualities, his dedication and passion for the Cop on Top fundraiser for Special Olympics. Former St. Charles City Administrator Brian Townsend – now Schaumburg village manager – said many have accused him of stealing Lamkin from the city. Such characterization is unfair to Lamkin, he said.

“He had to convince a lot of people he was right for the

job,” said Townsend, who welcomed – and encouraged – boos from the crowd as he came forward to speak.

Deputy Chief of Administration Steve Huffman, who will serve as interim police chief, said he didn’t have the time to list everything Lamkin did for the department. His achievements include the department’s new full-service firing range, the community restitution program and, Huffman said, positive relationships with community organizations and the media.

Personally, Huffman said, he learned more from Lamkin than from anyone else.

He presented Lamkin with the department’s award of merit and described him as “one of the best leaders to ever come through our doors.”

Lamkin credited his staff for their contributions, noting he couldn’t have done any of it without them.

“To me, it’s all about the work that we do,” he said.

Mayor Ray Rogina kept his comments short.

“Your sage advice will always be rooted here in St. Charles,” he said.

Both Gengler and Passarelli suggested that residents monitor the weather and stay off the roads if possible.

“If the weather should deteriorate and the roadways become hazardous, I would recommend not traveling if you do not have to,” Passarelli said.

“If you do have to drive, leave plenty of time for travel.”

Said Gengler: “If you have to go out, stay on main roadways and be prepared to be in your vehicle for an extended period of time. In blizzard conditions, there is a very real possibility that help may be hours, not minutes [away] should your car become disabled.

A winter storm watch will be in effect tonight and will stretch into Sunday, and local police officials suggest that people check the weather before driving in what could be hazardous conditions.

Lt. Pat Gengler, a spokesman with the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, warned of the potential of a “worst-case scenario” of snow falling on frozen roads.

The advisory, issued by the National Weather Service, goes into effect at 6 p.m. today, and it will stretch through 6 p.m.

Sunday. A freezing rain advisory was in effect Friday, causing the Geneva Police Department to issue a news release, urging people to “drive slowly, allow extra time for travel and maintain a safe distance from vehicles in front of you.”

Geneva Police Cmdr. Eric Passarelli said Friday that there were minor accidents, with no injuries, spread throughout town.

He said hills on the east side

of town were icy, and that cars were getting stuck as they were traveling up the hills.

Gengler said Friday that conditions were icy, mostly from Route 64 to the north county line.

He said there were reports of cars sliding, but there were not many crashes as of Friday afternoon.

There is a greater potential for hazardous conditions during the winter storm watch period.

The forecast calls for snow and sleet accumulation, and weather officials have said that will change to all snow at some point. But they said it’s not clear when that will happen in Kane County, nor is it clear how much snow will fall in specific areas.

The storm watch does warn of “a possible mix with freezing rain, resulting in a glaze of ice,” which could occur this evening into early Sunday morning. That would create dangerous traffic conditions, the watch stated.

Closing time proposal requires closer look The latest proposal for how to curtail alcohol-fueled misbehavior in downtown St. Charles raises some concerns.

On Monday, the St. Charles Government Operations Committee approved a proposal that would make midnight the closing time for bars, with liquor license owners having the option to pay extra to remain open until 1 or 2 a.m.

The proposal stipulates that a licensee with a base license renewal fee of $1,200 would be charged an additional $2,300 to stay open until 2 a.m.

The plan still needs to be addressed by the City Council, which should give serious thought to whether this pro-

posal unfairly punishes establishments that have a low rate of late-night incidents.

It’s perfectly reasonable for the city to scrutinize an establishment’s track record during the permitting process, and potentially impose punishments for businesses that are not conscientious about adhering to safety measures.

But the model put forward

this week seems to paint with a broad – and punitive – brush.

Making midnight the default closing time unless an establishment is willing to pony up is an eyebrow-raiser. While bumping up the 2 a.m. closing time has been a talking point in St. Charles this year, going from 2 a.m. to midnight – as opposed to 1 a.m. – seems like

a radical step.

It’s been well-documented that the popularity of the downtown St. Charles bar scene has its drawbacks, all too often leading to poor decisions that end up cited in the police blotter.

But addressing those issues in a business-friendly way should remain the priority.

Standout Beebe has a lot to be proud of As notable athletes from this area go, Don Beebe ranks high on the list.

The Kaneland graduate rose from obscurity to enjoy a memorable NFL career as a lightning-fast receiver, complete with six appearances in Super Bowl games.

Upon his retirement, Beebe returned to the area and settled in as football coach at tiny Aurora Christian High School.

He certainly made a name for himself – again – during his decade guiding the Eagles before stepping down as head coach last week. Beebe is expected to remain on as an assistant coach under the Eagles’ new coach, his younger brother, Dave.

Beebe wanted to free up time for other pursuits, especially a movie project based on his underdog, life story and Christian values. He also wants to more closely support the college football career of his son, Chad Beebe, at Northern Illinois.

His 10 seasons at Aurora Christian made it clear that Beebe might be an even better coach than he was a player. The

Eagles went 97-26 under Beebe’s stewardship, winning IHSA Class 3A state championships in 2011 and 2012.

As impressive as Beebe’s win-loss ledger was, he frequently spoke about connecting with players on a spiritual level as his main priority, a natural fit at a school like Aurora Christian.

It would be difficult to overstate the importance of Beebe’s presence at Aurora Christian, especially as the school encountered major financial duress in recent years. Beebe’s name recognition and the positive publicity the football program generated undoubtedly helped the school remain viable by making Aurora Christian a more attractive destination for prospective students, athletes or otherwise.

Beebe won’t be a head coach anymore, but we have no doubt his leadership skills will continue to make a difference in the years to come. Kaneland, Aurora Christian and the surrounding area can be proud to call Don Beebe one of our own.

Praise for St. Charles East choir I went to the St. Charles East High School holiday choir concert, and it was just beautiful.

The music director is wonderful.

On Dec. 18, the Kane County Chronicle reported that the Batavia School District OK’d a higher levy. The law for tax levy changes needs to be changed, so any changes need to go through a referendum vote.

Then, the district would need to justify the changes. The citizens need an attorney that could make this happen. The district has attorneys that are paid for with our tax dollars. The district threatens to increase class sizes or reduce curriculums. Like politicians, there is no accountability for the board members. I’ve never seen any sign of the school district cutting costs. If they were cutting costs, they would let you know. People should be sick of rubber-stamp approvals.

Anyone with students in the district already knows there are student fees for everything. ’Tis the season for giving. The school board just gave it to us.

To the caller who thinks that Mr. Obama is our Mr. Mandela, I just don’t see that similarity, other than they have both been elected officials. Unlike Mr. Mandela, our president has not brought the nation together.

He has not been forgiving. He has been judgmental. He has not been compromising, and he doesn’t work well with others.

He demeans and denigrates those with a different view. He has been generally disingenuous. I fail to see the similarity between our president and Mr. Mandela.

Protest the insanity At school, if some students are going around bullying other students, they get reprimanded or suspended from school. It’s time to suspend the school board. They keep on bullying honest taxpayers by raising their property taxes every year.

It is getting way out of control.

Thousands of people are losing their homes, but the board doesn’t care. They keep raising the taxes. Enrollment is down.

Taxes have gone out of sight.

It’s time for everybody to protest this insanity. Please help.

Vote no I just found out about the property tax increase referendum, and I only ask, why do we have to do this now? Isn’t this a really bad time to be raising taxes on your citizens? People have fixed incomes and they are losing their homes. According to the Illinois Policy Institute, Illinois has the second-highest property taxes in the nation.

And yet, there is a group trying to raise our property taxes by $13 million. I ask people to vote no on the referendum on March 18.

We’re not all rich I’m calling about the raise in school taxes, especially St. Charles – 2.5 percent? Excuse me? People can’t afford to live on that. I know people who are still without jobs or working very few hours. So, St. Charles, start living like everyday people.

I had the pleasure Wednesday night, to attend the Kaneland High School holiday concert.

What a truly wonderful performance. From the opening trumpets, heralding the start of the show, to the Madrigal singers, the concert band, the choir, the mimes and the jazz band, it was truly a magical experience.

Imagine my shock and delight to hear songs with a religious theme, both Christian and Jewish. I thought such things were not allowed in public schools.

The end of the show featured a spine-tingling rendition of Handel’s “Messiah.” Congratulations and kudos to all the teachers and students who presented this magnificent holiday show. Take a bow for a job well done.

Building a workforce Manufacturers look at schools to replace retiring baby boomers

ometimes when talking with students, Jim Nelson of the Illinois Manufacturers’ Association asks them to name two things in the room that are not manufactured.

The question usually amazes them, he said, because they’ve never thought about it. He tells them that guesses such as the classroom’s walls are incorrect because somebody had to make the concrete.

“Finally somebody will say, ‘The air we’re breathing,’ ” he said, noting the other nonmanufactured item is the students themselves.

Educating students about careers in manufacturing has become a priority for manufacturers as they look to replace an aging workforce.

In Illinois, Nelson said, manufacturers are challenged with replacing 30,000 production workers per year for the next 15 years because baby boomers are retiring.

“That’s about 5 percent of our workforce per year,” he said, noting roughly 600,000 people statewide work in manufacturing.

And so, in the last three and a half years, the IMA Education Foundation has shifted its focus from addressing education policy and funding to dealing with remedies for the skills gap, Nelson said.

The entire education system – from preschool to post-baccalaureate – is of interest to the manufacturers, he said.

He, along with others from various organizations, recently visited the Gateway to Technology classes at Haines Middle School in St. Charles.

A precursor to the high schools’ Project Lead the Way program, the middle school courses include design and modeling and automation and robotics.

Eighth-graders Grace Sopha and Dmi Petrusha – students in the Magic of Electrons class – said they like to learn how electronics work. Their classmate Tom Pye agreed, using computers as an example.

“To know how they really turn on is very interesting,” the 13-year-old said.

St. Charles School District 303’s Project Lead the Way programs are supported by St. Charles-based Bison Gear & Engineering Corp. Company Chairman Ron Bullock said it is in businesses’ own interests to support such educational efforts, as they are building the pipelines for future workers.

Bullock – who has two grandsons in the district’s middle school programs – said such classes also give students a chance to test-drive career paths before they need to make a commitment.

“It’s important that people enjoy what they do as a career,” Nelson said. “Otherwise, it’s work.”

Kane County, along with other counties in the metropolitan area, is participating in Accelerated Training for Illinois Manufacturing, a program funded by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity through a U.S. Department of Labor Workforce Innovation grant.

ATIM aims to address the skills gap between job seekers’ skills and those required for today’s manufacturing by providing training for such positions as CNC operators, welders, industrial machinery mechanics and robotics technicians.

Kane County aims to have 35 participants, and 19 have signed up so far, said Renee Thompson, administrator of the Kane County Department of Employment & Education.

Of those, five have started their training, she said, noting partners include community colleges and schools that specialize in specific occupations.

ST. CHARLES – St. Charles School District 303 will now start posting Freedom of Information Act requests on its website.

The board approved the measure at its Dec. 9 meeting, becoming one of a few schools in the state to post FOIA requests online, according to board members. Although the move was approved following a committee recommendation, some board members expressed concerns.

“I don’t think we need to be like the second district in Illinois doing this,” board member Kathleen Hewell said at the meeting. “There’s no requirement by law to have it on your website, and very few districts in the state do this. Do we want to be the guinea pig on this?”

District spokesman Jim Blaney, who is one of two FOIA officers for the district, said the district doesn’t receive too many requests.

“I wouldn’t categorize it as a lot,” he said on Thursday.

“Most of them come from ven-

dors who maybe bid on something, and they want to see just want the bid that was awarded [was], or organizations looking for very specific information. That’s the bulk of them.”

Some board members at the Dec. 9 meeting were concerned that someone might misconstrue some information in a FOIA because there might not be much context. A few board members said some people request very specific information, and without knowing what a particular request was for, the FOIA requests might be confusing.

Board member Ed McNally said posting FOIA requests online would help make the district more transparent.

“We want to be the leading edge on a lot of things, and I think having the leading edge on transparency is a good start,” he said on Dec. 9.

Blaney said the district would start posting FOIA requests online beginning with the next one the district receives. He said he and the district’s other FOIA officer will continue to follow the laws regarding FOIA requests, which are very specific.

Dads living with their children are Shopper sues Target more active as parents, study finds over security breach

By NICOLE OSTROW Bloomberg News Most fathers who live with their children share mealtimes, change diapers and check homework, according to a U.S. study, and that is good for the kids.

While only 38 percent of fathers live with children – a number that’s been falling in the past five decades – those who do are more involved with their kids’ lives than in the past, according to a study by the National Center for Health Statistics.

The study builds on a 2002 U.S. survey to gather more data on fathers as research showed a positive link between a dad’s involvement and social outcomes for children.

The study found that 90 percent of dads who live with their children bathed, diapered or dressed them at least several times a week and that 88 percent of those men said they were doing a ‘’good’’ or ‘’very good’’ job.

“Many studies have found that the more involved dads

are, the better off the children are: Behavior, education attainment, academic achievement,” said lead study author Jo Jones, a statistician at the National Center for Health Statistics’ Reproductive Statistics Branch, in a Dec. 16 telephone interview. “Most dads think they’re doing a pretty good or great job at being a father, which is good. Men should feel good about their parental involvement.”

The researchers surveyed 10,403 fathers, using data from the 2006 to 2010 National Survey of Family Growth, a U.S. sample of women and men 15 to 44 years old that looks at different aspects of family.

During the study, 23.5 million men, or 38 percent, were living with one or more children and about 7.5 million, or 12 percent, were living apart. Some of the men fell into both categories.

Researchers surveyed fathers on areas of involvement such as joining kids at mealtime, playing, dressing, bathing, checking home-

work and talking to children about things that happened during the day.

Among the 12 percent of fathers who live apart from their children, 53 percent gave themselves ‘’good’’ or ‘’very good’’ ratings, and 24 percent said they were doing a ‘’bad’’ or ‘’not a very good’’ job. About 31 percent of the dads living separately helped with the bathing, diapering or dressing.

For dads of children ages 5 to 18 years old, 66 percent of those who lived with their kids ate meals with them every day in the previous four weeks compared with 2.9 percent of fathers who didn’t live with their school-aged children.

White and black fathers ate meals more often with their younger children than Hispanic dads, the report found.

About two-thirds of fathers who lived with their children talked to them every day about things that happened compared with 16 percent of dads who lived separately, the study found.

By JOEL ROSENBLATT Bloomberg News SAN FRANCISCO – Target, the second-largest U.S. discount chain, was sued by a Christmas shopper claiming she might have been exposed to identity theft from a data breach affecting 40 million debit and credit cards.

The lawsuit, filed Thursday in San Francisco in federal court, follows the Minneapolis-based company’s statement that the information was breached from Nov. 27 to Dec. 15, and that authorities and financial in-

stitutions were alerted immediately.

The lawsuit, based on allegations of invasion of privacy and negligence, claims the stolen data may permit the counterfeiting of cards by encoding the information onto any cards with a magnetic strip, and also may have reveal customers’ personal codes for debit cards.

“Target failed to implement and maintain reasonable security procedures and practices appropriate to the nature and scope of the information compromised in the data breach,” according to the complaint.

North thrives inside Callaghan notches double-double for physical North Stars

The North Stars’ big, burly bodies on the interior dissuaded the Bulldogs from attacking with any regularity, and Batavia’s outside game was not near enough as North ripped the Bulldogs, 70-49, for an Upstate Eight Conference River victory.

“You saw it tonight, they don’t really want to drive against Chase [Gianacakos], Garrett [Johnson] and [Camden Cotter] because they’re just huge,” said North junior forward Jack Callaghan, a rugged player himself. “If they go up, they’re going to get fouled, and it’s going to hurt. We like it when teams settle for jumpers. Every time someone takes a 3, we

consider that a W for us with that possession.”

Batavia made only five field goals in the first half, and three of those came from beyond the 3-point arc. North led, 31-16, at halftime, and was in control the entire night.

The North Stars (6-3, 3-1 Upstate Eight Conference River) are playing lots of zone defense this season, successfully for the most part.

“We tell these guys, if we can force a contested jumpshot, not give up the lane and hold them to one shot, go have fun on offense and do what you want to do,” North coach Tom Poulin said.

“We’ve got some ideas and some concepts of what we want to do offensively, but they play so well together, I would almost hold them back by making them do certain things.”

North’s muscle advantage also showed itself on

the glass, as the North Stars out-rebounded Batavia, 36-22.

Callaghan led the way with 13 rebounds to go with 14 points.

“When we’ve won a game, we’ve dominated the glass,” Poulin said. “When we’ve lost, it’s been really close, other than the North Lawndale game. That was the one game where we got out-rebounded but won. Every other game, it’s kind of gone hand-in-hand with the victory.”

In addition to being mindful of North’s daunting front line, Batavia also might have entered the gymnasium with a perimeter mindset based on making 13 3-pointers its last time out, a narrow loss to UEC River-leading Larkin.

The Bulldogs managed seven 3-point makes Friday but showed little offensive diversity.

proved virtually unstoppable from the floor in the first half en route to a game-high 20 points, going 5 for 6, including a perfect 3 for 3 from distance.

His running, pull-up 3 a few paces from the top of the key to beat the halftime buzzer provided a 31-24 lead and re-affirmed the Royals weren’t in Batavia anymore.

Six days removed from drilling no 3-pointers in a game they rallied to win against the Bulldogs, Larkin connected on eight treys Friday, including seven in the first half. An uneven performance in Thursday’s win at Elgin served as motivation for many players, namely Jones.

“We didn’t play well as a team, I didn’t play well at all individually, and I just wanted to redeem myself and just have a big game,” Jones said.

Geneva and Larkin needed some 27 minutes of real time to complete a first half in which referees whistled just eight combined personal fouls – none in the first quarter.

After the break, the Vikings still limited the Royals in penetration and under the basket. Trouble was, Larkin was on its way to shooting 50 percent (21 of 42) from the floor. Geneva actually was more efficient at 53 percent (23 for 43), but its struggles from long range (2 for 10) added up, too.

“We need to get a little bit more consistency out of some of our posts, but they’ve been doing a nice job, by and large,” Vikings coach Phil Ralston said. “I really didn’t feel like overall we played poorly. They just hit shots, and we had breakdowns.”

Larkin’s Brayden Royse snagged a key offensive rebound after freshman Christian Negron missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with Larkin holding a 54-52 lead with just less than a minute to play.

Boley hit four free throws in the final 26.3 seconds to finish with 13 points and join Jones in double figures.

Geneva’s Nate Navigato and Pace Temple tied for the team high with 13 points.

They and the rest of their teammates will aim to stay in the UEC River Race until the Vikings visit the Royals Feb. 14.

“We gave it all we had, but we know what we’ve got to work on for next time, and it’s going to be another great one at their place,” Parrilli said.

“So we’re excited. Just got to work on the little things.”

GENEVA – Chris Parrilli listed the handful of zone defenses the Geneva boys basketball team used against Larkin on Friday night.

Employing a base 1-2-2, the Vikings also rotated a 2-12 “buzz” and 1-3 “chase” in a bid to rattle the Upstate Eight Conference River Division leaders.

Parrilli’s assessment of how the Royals fared summarized Geneva’s 59-55 loss simply enough.

“We just wanted to throw some different things at them, catch them off-guard, see what they were ready for, and they handled everything pretty well,” the senior guard said.

“So you’ve got to give credit to them.”

Larkin (9-1, 5-0 UEC River) led by as many as 10 points in the first quarter and trailed only once, 2-0. Geneva (8-3, 3-2) threatened to pull ahead on several occasions down the stretch. Larkin seemingly had an answer each time.

Loudon Vollbrecht’s putback of an offensive rebound brought Geneva to within 4948 with 3:36 to play. The Vikings were down, 47-39 entering the final quarter.

Moments after the Vollbrecht play, Royals senior Taylor Boley flashed open on the right baseline and swished an open 3-pointer.

“We just knew that we could get almost every shot we wanted whenever we wanted because of the way that we rotate and we move the ball on offense,” Boley said.

Outlook: Batavia gained midyear traction last year at the Elgin Holiday Tournament, and second-year Bulldogs coach Jim Nazos hopes his team can make similar strides this year, beginning with Monday night’s late tipoff against F.W. Parker.

Unlike last year, the Bulldogs won’t have to worry about meeting up with UEC River heavyweight Larkin, which left the Elgin tournament this year to join the field at Jacobs.

Outlook: As you’d expect at a tournament of this caliber, both East and Wheaton Academy face formidable foes in Monday’s opening round, with the Saints facing heralded city foe Uplift and the Warriors taking on New Trier.

If East senior forward David Mason is able to return, it could give the Saints a boost against the 32-team Proviso West field that features powers such as Stevenson, Morgan Park and St. Joe (which the Saints took to overtime in their Thanksgiving tournament).

Holiday Tournament Local team in the field: St. Francis

Outlook: St. Francis plays the host Hilltoppers to open up Monday afternoon, and will face Willowbrook and Hoffman Estates later in the week.

The Spartans are capable of a better holiday showing than they gave at Batavia over Thanksgiving, when they finished 1-2.

Kaneland, Burlington Central, Aurora Christian Outlook: Aurora Christian opens play Monday morning against Lisle, while Burlington Central and Kaneland both have byes and won’t play until later in the week.

Central could eventually earn a shot at revenge against Genoa-Kingston, which pulled out a down-to-the-wire win over the Rockets on Thursday night. Kaneland tuned up for the small school-oriented tournament by blasting Hinckley-Big Rock on Tuesday.

Freshman Loberg answers call for shorthanded Vikings

By DENNIS D. JACOBS editorial@kcchronicle.com STREAMWOOD – What do you do when your point guard goes down with an injury? Call up a post player to take her place, of course.

Geneva freshman Grace Loberg stepped into the void left by the absence of Michaela Loebel on Friday night and scored 15 points to help the Vikings down Streamwood, 54-41, in Upstate Eight Conference River play.

“Tonight was her first game,” Geneva coach Sarah Meadows noted. “We just moved her up last week. She’s ready, played well tonight.

She’s just got to get used to the physicalness and the pace.”

Loebel missed most of last season with a torn ACL, but Meadows said this injury

doesn’t appear to be that serious.

“Loebel [on Monday] tweaked her knee a little bit,” Meadows said. “She had an MRI on Wednesday. It is not retorn, we’re just taking our time.”

Loebel’s quick hands made her dangerous in Geneva’s diamond press, while Loberg used her length to create problems for the Sabres (2-6, 1-2).

Streamwood committed 35 turnovers in the contest.

“The press looked nice tonight,” Meadows said. “It’s nice to have Grace so long up in the front of that now with Michaela not there. And the same with Janie [McCloughan]. Janie’s so athletic and so quick, she can go side to side real quick.”

McCloughan scored 12 points and nabbed four steals.

Her steal and layup gave the Vikings a 7-0 lead just 49 seconds into the game and it looked like Geneva (7-2, 2-1) would blow the Sabres out of the gym. But Streamwood took advantage of some cold shooting by the Vikings and numerous free-throw opportunities to creep back into the game.

Streamwood’s Holly Foret converted a pair of free throws after the officials called a technical foul on Meadows for being out of the coaching box.

“I hadn’t even said one thing to any of them all night,” Meadows said. “I can understand if I was yelling at them and they want to give me a technical. Fine. But I hadn’t even said one thing to them.”

The Sabres eventually pulled to within one at the end of the first quarter when a driving basket by Hannah

McGlone made the score 11-10.

McGlone scored 15 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, but was in foul trouble throughout the game and eventually fouled out midway through the fourth quarter.

Geneva took advantage of Streamwood turnovers to score eight straight points in the second quarter to open up a 21-12 lead.

“There were two sequences that I thought were the ballgame,” Streamwood coach George Rosner said. “One, when we turned it over three times in a row, and then another one where we turned it over. There were two sequences when the game was still on the line that they scored a bunch of points at once and got too far out ahead for us.”

The second sequence came with the Vikings leading 35-29

in the third quarter. Five Sabre turnovers helped Geneva score 11 unanswered points.

Abby Novak had 11 points and six rebounds for Geneva. She said the experience of playing without Loebel last season helped the Vikings adjust more quickly to her absence this time around.

“We played these roles before,” Novak said. “And then Grace Loberg the freshman stepped up this game and was amazing. … She helped a lot.

Sidney [Santos] stepped up and played point guard. Kate Rogers stepped up and played point guard. There were so many kids. Bella [Medina] stepped up and played point guard, so it was great.”

Santos was limited to five points, but secured seven rebounds and passed out nine assists.

Redshirt junior linebacker Bobby Winkel and the Northern Illinois football team are set to fly Sunday to San Diego ahead of Thursday’s Poinsettia Bowl against Utah State (8:30 p.m., ESPN). It will be a long way from home for Winkel, a Marmion alumnus from Batavia, but after missing most of the season with various injuries, he’s glad to be going anywhere.

Kane County Chronicle sports reporter Kevin Druley touched base with Winkel for the latest edition of the Weekend Chit-chat, in which Winkel addressed, among other subjects, his recovery and history of California travel. The following is an edited transcript:

I got hurt in spring ball, [hyperextended] my knee, was out for the last two weeks of spring ball. Came back in the summer and then about halfway through our summer, we started our 7-on-7s and I actually hurt my foot, so that was no good. ... He actually came with me to my brother Jake’s game out at [the University of Chicago] one day, so I still keep in touch with him and my other coaches from Marmion.

LAKE FOREST – Week after week, critics have ripped Bears running back Michael Bush for his struggles to score in short yardage this season.

Yet, after Bush rumbled 40 yards for a touchdown last week against Cleveland, he heard from fans who were unhappy that he scored instead of falling down to run out the clock.

Go figure.

“I can’t win this year,” Bush said with a smile and a sigh as he stood in front of his locker at Halas Hall. “It’s just the way it is. But it’s all good.”

It’s all good now, at least, as the Bears prepare to play the Philadelphia Eagles.

But it hasn’t always been that way.

This story begins about a month ago, when Bush was mired in one of the toughest stretches of his career. Bush never left the sideline Oct. 20 against the Washington Redskins, and in the four games that followed, he carried the ball 19 times for 25 yards.

Keep in mind that this was the same running back who tallied 1,395 yards from scrimmage and eight touchdowns in 2011 as a member of the Oakland Raiders.

It seemed like a good time to ask Bush about his season.

Bush shook his head, politely declining. He kept standing there, silently shaking his head. At that point, the moment summed up his season more than any words could have.

So when Bush agreed to talk this week, I wondered about his lowest point of the season.

“It’s not just one,” Bush said. “It’s collective.”

How did he cope?

“It was basically not taking my frustration home,” Bush said. “But, like I said, I’m over it.”

t’s a part of the game, and most NFL players have gone through it. It’s just a first for rookie Khaseem Greene.

Greene has filled in for Lance Briggs the past seven games, collecting 27 tackles and an interception. Now, he is set to return to his role on special teams with Briggs expected back Sunday.

“I don’t think it’ll be weird. It comes with the game,” he said. “Man, you’ve got a guy like Lance Briggs, seven-time Pro Bowler, in my opinion [he] is the best linebacker in his position.

“I’m just taking it all in, I’m learning from him. I get the best of both worlds. I was out there last week playing and now I get to watch somebody who I play behind, do what he does and take tips and pointers from him. For me, it’s a win-win situation.”

A reporter joked with Jay Cutler last week about his return to the starting role, asking if Josh McCown had given him back the keys to the car.

“No, I gave him a spare set,” Cutler quipped.

Remember in high school, when you got the keys to your parents’ car, just for a weekend, but then had to return it?

Sixth-year safety Craig Steltz has filled in to start eight times in his career. He had played a few snaps here or there on defense, but then Major Wright tweaked a hamstring before the Vikings game.

Steltz started, led the team in tackles, got praise from Marc Trestman, and then returned the keys and went back to his role on special teams when Wright got healthy as if nothing changed.

“You’ve got to adapt.

We’re professionals in here, that’s part of the game,” he said. “Nothing crazy about it.”

Greene should still see

some snaps Sunday, even if Briggs is starting, and he knows to be prepared for that.

“I’m preparing to be on special teams and be backing up Lance and see where it goes from there,” he said.

“Obviously, I have to prepare if the worst-case scenario happens. … I’m preparing as a backup, at the same time, at any given time something can happen and I will be the next linebacker in if anybody got hurt.”

While backups fill in for injured players and then return to their previous roles every week in the NFL, McCown’s situation drew national attention, and the way he handled it represented an almost “too good to be true” type of humility.

“Certainly, I hope every man in this locker room takes pride in his work and wants to do well and you know, I don’t think I’d be here if I didn’t want to play. I mean, you want guys on your team that want to be on the field,” he said last week. “But also, you want guys on your team that know their roles and understand that. And so, for me, I understand my role on this team. It’s the backup quarterback.”

The situation is much different in terms of how Greene and McCown played, but it can still be an awkward scenario – no one truly wants to give back the keys to the car. Greene did take note, though, of how McCown went from NFC Offensive Player of the Week to cheerleader and coach on the sideline.

“Josh never complained once, he never got down, you never saw Josh pouting about what happened with Jay coming in. He knew, just as well as Josh knew, and I know that,” Greene said. “My job is to do as best as I could while Lance wasn’t here and not mess up anything. It’s not going to be a surprise or shock, just me being in a really good situation because I get to watch him again.”

Hoops for Hope event at St. Charles East ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles East boys basketball team is hosting its second annual Hoops for Hope fundraiser today at the freshman, sophomore and varsity basketball games against Batavia High School.

The majority of this year’s proceeds will support The Jimmy V Foundation for Cancer Research, an organization named after Jim Valvano, a college basketball coach who died at age 46 of cancer. There are several activities planned for the event including showing a short video on Jimmy V and how cancer has touched several people at St. Charles East.

Students are seeking donations for community service hours, selling “Hoops for Hope” T-shirts, raffling prizes and selling tribute basketballs to raise funds for cancer research. Last year the event raised more than $10,000.

Christmas chaos Holy holidays, Batman. We forget that the time and energy it takes to prepare for them means that other things will have to slide, and then there are the nonsense days that throw us completely off-kilter.

For example, the other day, while fielding calls from my former plumber’s insurance company on my cell phone, I juggled texts from a neighbor concerned about recent burglaries in our neighborhood, along with others from my dear teenager, annoyed about why I wouldn’t be bringing his lunch to school. Again. (It pained me to set this limit, but I digress.)

All while hanging out onhold (on my land-line) with a company that did not have permission to draft funds from my account – but did (oh yes, joy to the world), and sifting through Internet headlines about an apparent kerfluffle involving every Target store in the nation

TALES FROM THE MOTHERHOOD Jennifer DuBose and their customers’ compromised credit cards. Shoot. I did shop there, once, during the period in question. Ugh. No wonder I fantasize about living mostly off the grid in a teeny, tiny, pond-side cottage in the woods, with nothing but books and a cat for company. I go there in my head a lot.

But this other, oftentimes lovely – though occasionally crazy-making – life beckons.

Substitute mere details and I’m sure mine resembles yours in some pretty basic ways. It all gets to be too much, sometimes.

Am I right?

Early one morning this week I awoke with a determination

to reconnect with those things that help to keep me on my feet, in spite of it all. I decided to keep it simple. I will do these few things each and every day just for me, simply because they feel good.

For one thing, I’m re-committing to exercise. Not just because holiday visits with family I see maybe once a year are imminent and I wanna look cute in my jeans, but because it just feels good to work up a sweat. I’m happier. I just am.

So, exercise is non-negotiable (20 minutes on the Stairmaster and a few stretches, people, not a 10-mile run, for Pete’s sake – this is me we’re talking about; and no, I’m not giving up chocolate). Does it happen every single day? Nope, but that’s my intention. Making it so makes it ever more likely, however.

I’m also reading, even if it’s just for 10 minutes, every day.

According to a news release, Beckman is an expert in high-end computing systems, and he has designed and built software and architectures for large-scale parallel and distributed computing systems.

and computer science fueling a new breed of massive, powerful and smart computers.

at bedtime, while I’m waiting to pick up my kids, wherever.

Having a go-to book I’m into is like having a reliable friend to hang out with. Doesn’t it feel great to have a good book to curl up with? At the moment I’m working on three. Three!

That’s weird. Never done that before, but hey, it’s what happened.

In no particular order, I’m reading “Early One Evening at the Rainbow Bar & Grille,” a funny, thought-provoking play by Bruce Graham; “Little Bee,” a work of fiction by Chris Cleave (oh, the writing!); and “True Refuge” by Tara Brach, a fabulous book about mindfulness and meditation. I’ve been a student of such practices for a while now, and find recommitting to them to be a true balm in what can otherwise become, if left unchecked, too-harried a life.

All of this must be work-

ing. Wednesday morning I returned home from yoga class with the plan to dive into my work. But as I pulled into my driveway I noticed that the sun was shining. Really shining. I turned off the car, rolled down the window and turned my face toward the sun, soaking it up.

Cold as it was I was comfortable. In fact, my face felt warm.

Really warm.

I ran inside, grabbed my laptop and a cup of tea, and sat there in my sunny driver’s seat for three hours getting my work done until it was time to pick Noah up from school. Maybe this makes me eccentric, but who gives a hoot? It felt great.

Crazy life? Holidays? Relatives? Bring ’em on.

Book Notes: Deborah Solomon holds up ‘Mirror’ on life, work of Norman Rockwell

By RAE PADILLA FRANCOEUR More Content Now Norman Rockwell, writes Deborah Solomon in the introduction to her new biography, “American Mirror: The Life and Art of Norman Rockwell,” is a “prime candidate for revisionist therapy,” something akin to “an art-world hug.”

In her witty, detailed, readable and, now, controversial account of the many parts that make up this iconic illustrator, she has done just that. Solomon gives us Rockwell in context, bringing to bear the relevant history, psychology, politics, sexuality, family life, and artistic temperament. Rockwell performed extraordinary artistic feats amid a host of daunting tensions.

His wildly popular Saturday Evening Post covers – a total of 323 – depicting an American way of life we aspire to, value and sometimes even see first-hand also subjected him to “scathing condescension.” Daring to portray people at the height of vulnerability – in love, at prayer, running away from home – incites a hostile reaction among some. To make matters worse, at the very time that Rockwell developed his highly detailed, narrative and affecting painting style, the Armory Show of 1913 introduced America to abstract expressionist art that many culturally elite hailed as the superior tract.

In order to give Rockwell his due, Solomon takes up the essential questions. Is an illustrator an artist? If it’s Rockwell we’re talking about, then the answer is yes, though reading the book is the way to get the more comprehensive and nuanced answer. His talent was precocious, prodigious and unrelenting. Rockwell established himself in New York City in his late teens. He made himself call on editors and art directors until they relented and gave him assignments.

Rockwell served his art at the expense of family, friends and peace of mind. Was Rockwell always trying to do more with his art, to move beyond or deeper? Yes. Yet his ambivalence is obvious. He was the first to call himself an illustrator, all the while desperately wanting more. He spent months

Despite ambivalence and the well-documented insecurities he experienced with his work, Rockwell knew and understood who he was as an artist and what he needed to do to produce his art. He amassed photographs of his models from all angles, he maintained a sizable collection of costumes and clothing in which to dress his models, he sketched and painted and repainted, he took weeks and months to complete a painting/magazine cover, he abandoned one favorite model for another as needed. He did not waiver in his approach, methods and execution.

Rockwell, we learn, was seen close

up by his neighbors in the small towns in New York, Vermont and Massachusetts in which he lived most of his productive years. He walked among his neighbors, using them as models and clerical staff and, sometimes, befriending them. People described him as obsessive-compulsive because he swept his studio and cleaned his brushes a number of times each day. On the other hand, he said he liked to walk away from the painting, take a break. Sweeping gave him that rhythmic, meditative activity that kept his brain in the work but gave his body ways to relieve the tension that naturally builds in focused concentration.

Others, including the author, use the word “repressed” in conjunction with Rockwell. He had three passionless marriages. He needed the company of a wife but not the intimacy. He seemed to lack deep attachments to his children, as well. Yet he enjoyed his time with men, with whom he was more comfortable. Could it be as simple as that? One of his closest friends and his psychology counselor, as well, was Erik Erikson. Who knows if sexuality was one of the issues they explored.

Early in his career Rockwell became commonly known (without derision) as the painter of boys because he often depicted boys. Girls, mothers and women were less often the subjects of his narratives. How he was repressed, whether there were sexuality issues and whether there is room for homoerotic interpretations is up to the readers/viewers. But Rockwell worked for a major mainstream national magazine and had a certain image to uphold. If he were working today, this discussion needn’t even hold relevance. But it is relevant with regard to Rockwell because it’s one more tension he had to bear, if he had to bear it.

Rockwell, we find, is a fascinating mix of self-possessed and insecure, confident and driven, lonely and yet detached, Republican turned liberal thinker firmly on the side of racial integration.

Ultimately, few painters have helped define American ideals with such universal resonance. Solomon gives Rockwell the hug he so deserves.

Strengthening, stretching program can heal back pain Dear Doctor K: My lower back has been giving me trouble.

Could you describe some exercises to strengthen it?

Dear Reader: If misery loves company, you’ll be glad to hear that there are many people who have back problems. One large survey conducted by the government found that about one out of every four adults had suffered from back pain lasting at least a whole day in the previous three months.

The good news is that an exercise program designed to stretch and strengthen your back and core muscles can help you heal from back pain and help prevent a repeat episode.

Both strengthening exercises and stretching are essential. The bones of your spine (the vertebrae) hold you upright. They are stacked on top of each other like a roll of dimes. That stack is like a column, but the bones in that stack stay on top of each other only because the muscles attached to those bones keep them in proper position.

When those muscles are weak, changes in the position of the bones can cause pain. Nerves that run between the bones can be pinched, and ligaments that

Stretching is important because sometimes the pain comes from the muscles themselves.

As we get older, our muscles tend to stiffen up more. When a stiff muscle is suddenly asked to work, it can cause pain. If the muscle is gently stretched, it becomes more ready to work.

Supple, well-stretched muscles are less prone to injury. Stretch gently, without bouncing. If you aren’t used to stretching, start by holding a stretch for a short time.

Gradually build up to roughly 30-second stretches.

It’s not just your back muscles that need strengthening and stretching; other muscles also are important in keeping your back straight. Specifically, a stretching and strengthening regimen should target your back, abdominal and buttock muscles.

Together, these muscles help maintain an upright posture and support the back during walking, standing and sitting.

The muscles of the upper legs also need to be strong and flexible. When they are weak and tight, they can strain the supporting structures of the back.

If you were exercising before your back pain and had to slow down or stop because of it, don’t resume exercising at the same level as before the episode. If you try to pick up where you left off, you might hurt your back again.

Gradually build back up to where you were before.

I advise working with an expert to develop a suitable exercise program. Ask your doctor to recommend a physiatrist (a doctor who specializes in physical medicine), a physical therapist or a reputable personal trainer.

The right exercise program will help you build strong, flexible muscles that will be less prone to injury.

$7 weekly allowance Dr. Wallace: I’m 13 and my parents give me an allowance of $7 a week.

Well, they might as well not give me any money.

Of the $7, I must put $5 in the bank, and then I must turn in a paper each Saturday at noon listing how I spent every penny of the $2 that I’m allowed to spend. Maybe when they were young they could buy a few things for $2 and still have a little left, but I couldn’t even buy myself a hamburger unless it was at a special price.

Please think about this, too. If I want to buy something for $10, I have to wait over a month to buy it, and during this time I can’t spend one penny. When I ask why I can’t spend more than $2 a week, I’m told that I’m learning the value of money.

Well, Dr. Wallace, as you can see, I’m not learning very much.

If supervised properly by parents, the child learns how to budget, save and spend wisely.

Your parents are a bit rigid with the way they want your allowance used, but they may have a learning plan that I’m not familiar with.

Is it possible to earn a little money by volunteering to do extra jobs around the house?

If the answer is yes, make sure you can earn enough to add a glass of milk when you buy that hamburger on special.

But remember, many teens are not fortunate enough to receive an allowance of any kind.

Dr. Wallace: School is almost out for Christmas break and my friends and I had plans to spend some free time touring our local mall. All that has changed because the

’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace mall has made a new rule that requires teens to be accompanied by an adult, or they can’t enter the mall. During the summer, a few gangbangers caused a huge disturbance, and even the police had a difficult time restoring the peace. The stores in the mall complex voted to ban unchaperoned teens from shopping.

I think this is a stupid rule. Why punish many for the sins of a few? Aren’t the storeowners aware that teens have a lot of purchasing power? Six of my friends and I wrote protest letters to the mall manager, but we didn’t receive a reply. This is just another example of teens being harassed for no other reason except that they are not yet 18. Hassling teens is a good way to cause us to become militant! – Jennifer, New York, N.Y. Dear Jennifer: Mall cruising has become a favorite teen pastime and, as you mention, most teens who visit malls behave themselves. I understand the storeowners’ concern.

Customers want to shop in safety and will stay away if disturbances are common. Most laws that affect the many are enacted because of the irresponsible behavior of a few.

I’m not in favor of banning unchaperoned teens from the mall.

Increased security is a better answer. This extra expense can be paid out of the increased revenue the teens would bring in.

At the bridge table, we must decide how high we wish to reach. In this deal, North opens one diamond, South responds one spade, and North raises to three spades (yes, he might bid four spades). Now South normally has three choices. He can pass with no interest in game. He can raise to four spades. Any other suit bid shows interest in a slam.

Here, four diamonds is a control-bid (cue-bid), usually indicating the ace. However, since it is partner’s first-bid suit, South might have only the diamond king when he does not have the club ace. (Do not make your first control-bid with a shortage – void or singleton – in partner’s second suit.)

North then control-bid four hearts. (If North-South had been using Roman Key-Card Blackwood, North would have bid four no-trump.) This allowed South to use Blackwood twice before jumping to seven spades. (Yes, South might have bid seven no-trump.)

West leads the club queen.

After winning trick one with his king, South cashes the spade ace, getting the bad news. Now he crosses to dummy’s club ace and plays the spade nine, capturing East’s 10 with his king. Back to the board with a heart, another spade through East picks up his trumps and allows declarer to claim.
