DIXON – Shaw Media’s Board of Directors elected three executives to serve as vice presidents and officers of the company.

At its Dec. 12 meeting, the company elected Don T. Bricker as vice president of suburban publishing, J. Tom Shaw as vice president of digital media and Ben Shaw as vice president of technology.

Shaw Media is the parent company of the Kane County Chronicle.

‘Green Resolution’ program set for Dec. 29

Aurora prevails with best drinking water

ST. CHARLES – Learn how to live more lightly on the earth during a Dec. 29 nature program by the Forest Preserve District of Kane County.

“The Nature Network: Make a Green Resolution” is from 10 to 11 a.m. Dec. 29 at Creek Bend Nature Center, located within LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve at 37W700 Dean St., St. Charles. Ages 18 and older are welcome.

The program is free, but advance registration is required. Call 630-444-3190 or email programs@kaneforest. com to register. “The Nature Network” program series is designed for active adults who are interested in nature and want to meet others who share this interest.

Each monthly gathering will feature a nature-themed discussion or activity. Decem-

Hickory Knolls to host Winter Olympics ST. CHARLES – The Hickory Knolls Discovery Center’s third annual Winter Olympics will be from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Jan. 5 at the center, 3795 Campton Hills Road, St. Charles.

It is for those ages 6 and older, who will compete in snowshoe relays and other games, then toast the “closing ceremonies” with hot chocolate. If the weather does not permit outdoor activities, program will be held indoors with ice cubes, cotton balls and marshmallows substituting for nature’s snow and ice.

Children must be accompanied by an adult. The fee is $10 for residents and $15 for nonresidents. Registration is required at www.stcnature.org.

A panel of three judges decided that Aurora had the best drinking water based on taste, odor and clarity during the Kane County Water Association’s annual water-tasting contest Thursday at Lincoln Inn Banquets in Batavia.

This is the fifth time Aurora has won the contest, the most of any community in Kane County. Montgomery won last year.

The award has been presented since 1997.

Those in charge of the city’s water production did not take the honor lightly. Aurora’s drinking water is a blend of well water and Fox River water.

“We have a well-run plan and an excellent staff,” said Bob Leible, assistant superintendent of water production for Aurora. “You certainly don’t want your customers to be disappointed with the water that comes out of the tap.”

Before Thursday’s win, the last time Aurora had taken the award was in 2008. Aurora now will compete in the state competition next year.

“It is a little bit of bragging rights between the communities,” Leible said. Aurora, along with Batavia, Geneva, St. Charles, North Aurora, Sugar Grove, Montgomery, Yorkville and Elgin, participated in this year’s contest.

Kane County Sheriff Pat Perez. The samples from each community were submitted in unmarked beakers so judges did not know whose water they were drinking. Perez said he found the task difficult as he sniffed and carefully eyed the beakers of water.

“It was difficult to choose,” he said. “The majority of them were very good. Some were so close, I had to give them the same score.”

Ice, snow, then a white Christmas

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com First, there will be a chance for icy roads today. Then, on Sunday, there is a possibility of accumulating snow.

After that, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service said, there is a “pretty decent” chance for a white Christmas, which is defined as at least an inch of snow on the ground on Christmas Day. The immediate concern will be the potential for hazardous driving today. The weather service issued a special weather statement for the region that warns of “the possibility for drizzle to freeze to the surface, forming a glaze of ice.” Meteorologist Richard Castro said the morning commute is the main concern, as freezing rain is expected to fall north of Kane County, but that might extend to the area.

The weather service issued a hazardous weather outlook report for later in the weekend, warning that “a major storm system is expected to affect the area.” A winter storm watch has been issued, and it will run from Saturday evening through Sunday afternoon. What that means for Kane County is uncertain.

Castro said he expects at

least a minor accumulation of snow, which he defined as a couple of inches, but there could be more depending on when rain changes into snow.

There might be mainly rain on Saturday night, with periods of sleet or freezing rain.

By Sunday morning, he said, a “period of accumulating snow” might take place, and that might remain into Sunday afternoon.

He said northwest Illinois might receive a substantial snowfall, “but it wouldn’t take much for it to go south into areas of Kane County.” But even the heaviest snow wouldn’t be more than 8 inches, he said, adding that “it’s just not lining up to be really a major, major amount of snow.”

Castro notes that temperatures then are expected to plunge, with a low of 9 Sunday night, then highs of 16 and 23 forecast for Monday and Tuesday, respectively. And there is a slight chance of snow for Wednesday, which is Christmas Day, with a high near 31. So, he said, it’s likely that there will be at least an inch of snow on the ground, enough to call it a white Christmas.

“Chances are at least fairly good of this happening,” he said. “Chances are pretty decent.”

BATAVIA – After almost 10 years of heading the Batavia Chamber of Commerce, Roger Breisch said he is ready for a new direction in his life.

Breisch on Thursday announced his resignation as executive director. His resignation is effective Jan. 31, the same day the Batavia Chamber of Commerce will present its annual Batavia Citizen of the Year award and Ole business awards.

Breisch has been with the chamber since July 2004.

“It’s just time,” he said.

“For a whole lot of reasons.

Chambers constantly need to be reinvented, and I’m not sure I’m the right guy for that.

So I’m giving the board the opportunity to cast the net, and see who is out there that might have a new vision.”

Breisch said chambers of commerce need to constantly ask the question, “what does it mean to be the voice of business?”

“I think we’ve reinvented the chamber here over the

“Owners of very large businesses and owners in general now regularly participate in the chamber,” Breisch said. “And from the industrial park, we have very senior business leaders now who give credence and credibility to the Batavia Chamber of Commerce. It is an organization that does have a strong voice in the community.”

The chamber currently has about 300 members, he said.

Breisch has been getting involved in Batavia ever since he moved to the city in 1989. His other activities have included being the chairman of the Batavia Fireworks Committee for 17 years.

Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke lauded Breisch’s contributions to the city.

“He’s brought a visionary drive to the job,” Schielke said. “He has been a driving force on the whole idea of downtown redevelopment and strengthening the city’s industrial base. He has helped us see wider horizons.”

St. Charles • A 33-year-old St. Charles man reported Saturday, Dec. 14, that a company named General Home Remodeling was using his name and Social Security number on loan applications. He was alerted to the fraud Friday, Dec. 6, when a Colorado company called him about such an application.

• A resident of the 1700 block of Lucylle Avenue in St. Charles reported Friday, Dec. 13, that a license plate bolted to his garage wall apparently had been stolen.

He noticed the theft after receiving a notice from the city of Chicago about a fine for an expired registration.

• An iPod and packing slip were reported stolen Friday, Dec. 13,

from a package delivered to a residence in the 2900 block of Black Walnut Lane in St. Charles. The residents reported the shipping tape on the package was not intact.

• Several tools were reported stolen Tuesday, Dec. 17, in the 100 block of South 13th Street in St. Charles: a $200 cordless drill and battery charger, a $150 3-inch belt sander, a $600 router and a $200 appliance dolly.

• A red tailgate for a 1995 Ford F150 was reported stolen Tuesday, Dec. 17, in the 200 block of Walnut Drive, St. Charles.

• Linda Oralia Bedolla, 27, of the 0-100 block of Longwood Place, Elgin, was charged Tuesday, Dec. 17, with driving without a license after an accident at North Fifth and Cedar streets in St. Charles.

Dar Johnson, home suffering from a lengthy illness, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2013. He was born July 7, 1941, in Muskegon, Mich., to Elizabeth (Ade) and Edwin Johnson, went to Trinity Lutheran School and later graduated from Muskegon High School.

Dar earned a B.A. in education from Concordia Teachers College, River Forest and an M.S. and Ed.D. in education from Northern Illinois University. In 1962, he married Dorothy (Dotty) Homan. They had two children, Todd and Britt.

Dr. Johnson taught at Immanuel Lutheran School, Dundee, before moving to District U-46 in Elgin. He was principal of Hillcrest Elementary and Udina Special Education School for 12 years before holding several administrative positions in U-46 and then becoming superintendent of schools in both Jackson,

Michigan and Evanston. During this time, he also was an adjunct professor for Roosevelt University in Chicago.

Dar and Dotty took an early retirement and worked for the Evangelical Church of America as lay mission developers. After knocking on many doors in the community of Newaygo, Mich., they opened the doors of Body of Christ Lutheran Church where they served as pastors for two years.

They then moved to Batavia to be close to grandsons.

For many years Dar taught adult Bible study. He was an avid reader, cross country skier, cyclist, jogger, tennis player and arrowhead hunter. He loved history and visiting historical sites in the United States. He was a gifted educator who loved children and being with them. But most of all Dar loved the Lord and his family and enjoyed spending time with them. His five grandsons were very precious to him.

Dar was preceded in death by his parents, Elizabeth and Edwin Johnson. He is survived by his wife, Dotty; son, Todd (Sally); grandsons, Blair and Dylan; daughter, Britt (Joe) Hawkins; grandsons, Cooper, Keegan and Cade; brother, Wayne (Marlene); sister, Wanda Denton; brother, Dennis (Jan); and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec, 21, at St. Marks Lutheran Church, 27 South Edgelawn Drive, Aurora, with visitation an hour before the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Book, an organization that provides books to underprivileged children. She is survived by three nieces and nephews, Connie Mengler, George (Joanne) Neville and Sue (Henry) Warfel; seven great-nieces and nephews; and many great-great-nieces and nephews, and too many beloved friends to count.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Cena Neville; one sister, Elsie Bjork; a brother, George Neville; both her husbands, Arthur Sloggett and Victor Rudolf; one niece, Gwen Vodnaski; and one nephew, Gary Neville.

GENEVA – Wayne Harvey Giese, 74, of Geneva, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2013, at Hines Veteran Administration Facility in Maywood.

He was born Jan. 24, 1939, in Aurora, the son of Harvey and Vera (Gladding) Giese.

Wayne was a graduate of Geneva High School and was a three-sport athlete. He played football, basketball and ran track. He was recently nominated for the Geneva high school Hall of Fame. Wayne was an excellent runner and ran the Grandma’s Marathon in 3:08. He was one of the founders of the Fox River Trail Runners Club. Wayne was an MP in the Army stationed in Germany. He loved snowmobiling, family camping trips and road races at Elkhart. He was an avid Cubs and Bears fan. Wayne’s parents were the former owners of Y’s Owl, a favorite meeting place for Wayne and friends. He was a longtime member of the St. Charles Moose Lodge. Wayne will be greatly and sadly missed. He reached the finish line with dignity, strength, and with family.

Wayne is survived by his children, Katherine and Bradley, both of Minnesota; their mother, Dorothy Giese of Florida; siblings, John “Jack” (Rosemary “Raz”) of Florida, David of Batavia, Janet Verhaeghe of Florida and Jim of Elburn; and many dear cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. He also is survived by a very special friend, Mary Maltby of Geneva.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents; sister-in-law, Signe; brother-in-law, Jerry Verhaeghe; and nephew, Peter.

The funeral service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 21, at Malone

Funeral Home, 324 E. State St. (Route 38), Geneva, with the Rev. Neil Miller officiating.

The visitation will be from noon until the funeral service at 3 p.m.

Christmas shopping – Salvation Army style Organization seeking help for toy distribution

alagattolla@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The Salvation Army will offer a special kind of Christmas shopping experience, and the Tri-Cities branch of the organization is seeking volunteers to help the process run smoothly.

The Salvation Army Tri-City Corps is seeking volunteers to serve as toy shop escorts for its distribution event, which is set for Saturday. Hundreds of guests, who are in need during the holiday season, will head to The Salvation Army’s location at 1710 S. Seventh Ave. in St. Charles to pick up gifts for their children.

The organization’s gymnasium will be filled with donated gifts. Volunteers will greet guests and help them choose the gifts. They also will keep a tally. Angel Ayala, the volunteer coordinator for The Salvation Army, said the event will take place from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., but volunteers are especially needed for shifts that run from noon to 3 p.m. and 3 to 6 p.m.

Volunteers will help guests select toys for their children.

Ayala said it is a good opportunity for those who want to help The Salvation Army, but perhaps “being outside bell ringing is a little too cold for you.”

The organization is seeking those age 18 and older, though Ayala said 16- and 17-year-olds could participate.

This year, for the first time ever, my family went to Geneva’s Christmas Walk.

Despite the cold, it was an awesome night. The blocked-off streets were brightened by holiday lights, with stores welcoming us in through the lure of sales and hot chocolate. There were carolers and brass bands that stuck out the chill to add to the holiday cheer. It was an enjoyable way to welcome in the holiday season.

I was surprised to hear so many kids talk about it at St. Charles East High School that Friday; I saw even more people I knew when we were walking around. They all seemed to have adopted the event as if Geneva was their own town.

I wish St. Charles had a holiday celebration more like Geneva’s. The only events we have are the tree lighting and Electric Christmas Parade.

LIFE AT EAST Brigid Ackerman Sure, people come downtown and walk around – some stores even put on special sales – but it just doesn’t feel the same.

I have hope that St. Charles can establish some new holiday festivities.

Perhaps the Downtown St. Charles Partnership can create our very own Christkindlmarket, like the one that is in downtown Chicago. Or maybe the public works department could create a public skating rink in Mount St. Mary Park. These attractions could put St. Charles on the map as a place that guarantees a good time for the whole family.

What’s an ideal way to celebrate the holiday season? Spending a day with friends and family while connecting to our great hometown!

The lengths a father will go for his son There are two kinds of people: those who bellyache, and those who accommodate.

A week before Christmas in a large sports store, I’m waiting to check out when, in another line, someone cuts, and the cashier begins ringing up the reprobate.

“You can keep your [items]!” The offended woman throws what looks like a bag of cotton balls on the counter. “I’m leaving!”

Minutes later, elsewhere, I approach the one feeder checkout line while holding a small container of “30 BIG REDWORMS.” A woman bearing an armful of Bears jerseys who easily could have beaten me to the line says, “Go ahead. I hate it when people don’t let someone with only one thing go ahead of ’em.”

See? Some bellyache, some accommodate. Same thing holds true for parenting. Last weekend, my son, Jay, walked up to my desk, hands behind his back. “I’ve got some early Christmas presents for you.”

Since spending a semester in Colorado (at what I call Winter Camp College) spawned a passion for ice fishing, Jay has tried to share his enthusiasm with me, analogous to a spelling bee champ coercing a dyslexic to play Scrabble.

“Great,” I said, dreading the gifts.

“This can save your life if the ice breaks and you fall in.”

I unwrapped a coiled cord with plastic orange handles at either end where two spikes protruded.

crush my son’s excitement, I volunteered to go. He’d spent big money on a foldout tent, gas-powered auger, sonar fish finder, butane heater, and two or three different kinds of state-of-the-art fishing apparatus.

We went; he augured; I froze. After two hours, Jay caught a good-sized bass and huge sunfish. Ecstatic, on the way home he exclaimed, “I don’t have to go fishing again this year.”

Making me ecstatic – until at dinner he allowed, “Next weekend I want to try Oakhurst Lake or Blackwell’s.”

“You taught him how to fish,” Tia, my wife, reminded me later.

“On water. Not on something that better belongs chopped up and cooling a Big

Gulp.”

“There are limits,” a school colleague advised after hearing how I accommodated my son’s interest by going on an expedition that would have given Byrd and Shackleton pause.

“He gave me gifts I couldn’t refuse.”

Earlier that weekend, walking out of a store with $40 worth of lures the size of bedbugs, Jay said, “I love you, Dad. Thanks for going ice fishing with me.”

Oh, for all the frozen hours I’d spend on the ice, that moment melted them all.

GENEVA – The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary has planned boater education classes at Gander Mountain, 2100 S. Randall Road, Geneva.

Flotilla 41-7 9WR of St. Charles will have the classes on Feb. 2, March 1 and March 30.

The class is eight hours long consisting of classroom instruction, reviews, stories, videos and a final exam covering federal, state and local boating laws; required safety equipment; safe boating; basic navigation; boating problems; and moving and storage of boats.

Upon completion of the class, students are awarded a certificate of completion and a wallet card.

The certificate of completion is accepted by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources under the Illinois Boat Registration and Safety Act of 1978, which requires those age 18 and younger to carry the certificate to operate a personal water-

craft or a motorboat on any public body of water in Illinois.

‘The need is profound’ Former St. Charles mayor champions disabled tax for Kane

he oldest daughter of former St. Charles Mayor Fred Norris, Lynda Lee Norris, 53, lives in a group home for developmentally disabled adults and has a part-time job with Portillo’s catering in Batavia.

Fred Norris, 77, St. Charles’ mayor from 1977 to 1997, is on the Community Leadership Team of Show You Care Kane, pushing voter support for a referendum on the March 18 primary ballot that seeks a 0.1 percent property tax levy increase. Show You Care Kane’s successful petition drive, in which the group collected 34,260 signatures, put the question on the ballot.

The money would pay for services for people like Lynda, who have developmental disabilities, such as with Down syndrome, autism or intellectual disability, defined as those with an IQ of less than 70.

The money raised, about $12 million, would be administered by a Developmental Disabilities Services Board appointed by the County Board.

The board would use the funds to provide housing, job coaching, therapy, transportation and other services for more than 1,300 other Kane County residents who are developmentally disabled and on a waiting list for services.

••• Chuck Miles of Geneva is chairman of the board of directors of AID. His developmentally disabled daughter, Emma, will turn 22 on March 3. At that point, Emma will “age out” of a school-based program run by Mid-Valley Special Education Cooperative.

“She’s on a waiting list,” Miles said. “There are 22,000 people with developmental disabilities in the state waiting for services. Because there’s nothing once you’re 22. We’re trying to find out what we do now.”

Miles said the family has been diligent in trying to see whether there are opportunities to keep Emma engaged in the community and maintain the skills she developed working with therapists over the years.

“We’re trying to find something that is a good fit for her, a real paid job or volunteer,” Miles said. “It’s important that she stay active in the community.”

Miles said if the referendum is approved, and if county officials levy to the full amount allowed, it would bring an estimated 200 more jobs to Kane County, such as additional therapists and construction trades rehab-

bing houses for more group homes.

“Once people begin to understand the magnitude of the need and the relatively small cost of this,” Miles said. “The additional tax on a $300,000 home would be less than $100. This is a local election where residents have an opportunity to make such a huge difference in the lives of so many in Kane County.”

••• But there is opposition.

Allen Skillicorn, an East Dundee trustee and anti-tax activist, filed a complaint with the Illinois State Board of Elections against Show You Care Kane, alleging violations.

Andy Nauman, deputy director of campaign disclosure for the board of elections, said a closed-door prelimi-

nary hearing was to be held Thursday on the complaint.

“I cannot go into details because it is closed,” Nauman said.

A hearing officer will make a recommendation as to whether Skillicorn’s complaint was justifiably filed, whether there should be a public hearing or if corrective action will resolve the issue, Nauman said.

“Whatever the hearing officer writes up, the board decides the next step,” Nauman said.

The state already cited AID for being late with quarterly reports of donations and expenditures.

The agency won an appeal of the $2,150 fine and did not have to pay it, a state hearing officer said.

record,” Skillicorn said.

“There are eight specific violations, most with finances.”

Lynn O’Shea, AID executive director, said none of Skillicorn’s allegations have merit.

“Anyone can make accusations – there is nothing we can do about it ,” O’Shea said.

“None of the allegations have any merit. That is our position.”

Another wrinkle for the disabilities referendum is the county board itself.

The enabling legislation gives the County Board the power to levy to the maximum – 0.1 percent – but the county board can levy less than that.

Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen would not say whether he would support a lower levy if voters approve the referendum.

“In just my personal opinion, the first issue is will this pass or not,” Lauzen said.

“There are few people who are insensitive to the enormous needs our neighbors with developmental disabilities suffer. However, I am also sensitive to people … who tell me they are being taxed out of their homes.”

“This is strictly a local situation,” Fred Norris said.

“The need is profound – how important it is to help people with developmental disabilities find proper housing and activities. With a little bit of aid, we can make them citizens of our community.”

Lynda became a client of the Association for Individual Development in 2004, Norris said, after the death of her mother.

“She worked in the catering department at Arthur Andersen for years,” Norris said. “She always had an activity and spending money.

She was productive. Then Andersen imploded, and they did not have a position for her. Then her mother passed away. I went to AID to ask for activities for her.”

AID, which formed Show You Care Kane to advocate for the referendum, provided a sheltered workshop for Lynda in Aurora. Then she went on a waiting list for housing, eventually getting a spot at a group home for four in St. Charles Township.

AID operates 35 group homes throughout its service area including the one where Lynda lives, Norris said. In addition to Kane, the service area covers DuPage, Kendall, suburban Cook and Will counties. The 50-year-old agency offers 20 programs to serve 5,000 clients in 45 communities, according to its website.

“As I get older, somebody has to be there to take care of her,” Norris said. “This is giving me a degree of comfort that she is in a secure facility, has a sense of purpose and quality of life. That is why

Batavia native gets recognition for helping save the life of fellow soldier BATAVIA – Mary Kay Longwell was not surprised to hear about U.S. Air Force Capt. David Bergeron helping save the life of a soldier who was suffering from respiratory failure.

Longwell knew the Batavia native when he was a member of Boy Scout Troop 21 with her two sons, who were younger than Bergeron. At the time, Longwell was an assistant scoutmaster with Troop 21.

“He was a real good role model,” Longwell said. “My own son is a captain in the

Army as well.”

Earlier this month, Bergeron, a 379th Expeditionary Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron flight nurse, was part of an eight-man team that saved the life of a soldier who was suffering from respiratory failure. The mission took place in southwest Asia.

He is based out of Pope Army Airfield in North Carolina, and his unit is regularly called on to perform such missions.

His mother, Rita Bergeron, is proud of her son. She read about his latest mission and saw his photo in a story published by the military.

“My son works very hard and is very committed to his mission there,” she said. “We are glad that he and his team do such a good job.”

David Bergeron, 28, is a 2003 graduate of Marmion Academy in Aurora.

“He has always loved the military,” Rita Bergeron said.

“It’s been a nice fit for him.”

Because he is often away on missions, he doesn’t get home on a regular basis. But he keeps in contact with his family.

“We Skyped on Thanksgiving,” Bergeron said. “He will probably be home in February.”

Food should arrive between 11:15 and 11:45 a.m. in a disposable container, ready to serve at noon.

Data breach might affect 40M cards

Bloomberg News NEW YORK – Target Corp., the second-largest U.S. discount chain, said Thursday that data for about 40 million debit and credit cards may have been wrongfully accessed in recent weeks and that law enforcement is investigating the matter.

The data was breached between Nov. 27 and Dec. 15, the Minneapolis-based company said in statement.

Target said it alerted authorities and financial institutions immediately and has now identified and resolved the issue.

The Secret Service said Wednesday that it was probing the incident, and the company said it’s working closely with law enforcement to bring those responsible to justice.

Target has locations in Batavia, St. Charles and South Elgin.

Target’s challenges come as U.S. retailers gear up for

the end of the holiday shopping season, which ShopperTrak predicts will be the slowest since 2009.

The last thing Target needs right now as rivals pour on the discounts in a last-ditch grab for market share is for its customers to wonder if they should use their cards, said Ken Perkins, an analyst for Morningstar Inc. in Chicago.

“The timing could be a concern, especially only a few days before Christmas,” he said in an interview.

The breach came after the chain had already cut its annual forecast for same-store sales growth to 1 percent from as much as 2.5 percent in August.

Doubts about its security could reduce purchases and the number of people signing up for a REDcard, its inhouse credit and debit cards, Perkins said.

Those card holders are the retailer’s biggest spenders,

he said.

“The longer-term risk is that people remember this who were going to sign up for a REDcard and don’t,” Perkins said.

Online shoppers at Target. com might be spooked too, given that a link across the top of the site Thursday read: “important notice: unauthorized access to payment card data in U.S. stores.”

“Target’s first priority is preserving the trust of our guests and we have moved swiftly to address this issue, so guests can shop with confidence,” Gregg Steinhafel, chief executive officer of Target, said in the statement.

Brian Leary, a spokesman for the Secret Service in Washington, confirmed the agency is probing the matter while declining to comment further because the investigation is underway.

While the agency is best known for protecting the president, it was created in

That role was expanded over the years to include certain kinds of fraud, including identity theft, electronic crime and computer intrusion.

The service was part of the U.S. Treasury until 2003, when it was one of the agencies brought into the newly-created Department of Homeland Security.

Data breaches have hit other retailers. TJX Cos., owner of the T.J. Maxx and HomeGoods chains, reported in 2007 that hackers broke into its computer system and stole about 45.7 million credit- and debit-card numbers.

The theft set a record at the time for such breaches.

In July, four Russians and

a Ukrainian were charged in what prosecutors called the largest hacking scheme in U.S. history, a break-in to computers of retail chains that included 7-Eleven, Carrefour and Wet Seal.

KrebsOnSecurity, a blog written by Brian Krebs, a former Washington Post reporter, first reported that Target was investigating a breach potentially involving millions of customer card records, citing sources at two credit-card issuers.

The site also reported that Target customers had already been victimized.

Molly Snyder, a spokeswoman for Target, declined to comment, citing the investigation.

She also wouldn’t comment on when Target first learned of the breach and where it took place in the transaction process.

kdruley@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Batavia junior 160-pound wrestler Jake Birkhaug earned a technical fall to close Thursday’s dual against St. Charles North, a springboard for any last-minute studying for today’s pre-calculus final.

Standing on the other side of the gym, North freshman 106-pounder Kolbe O’Brien unveiled a brand of mathematics that’s not in the book.

“I like to take away the forfeits,” O’Brien said, “to see if the guys that we had wrestle did well.”

North won four of nine contested bouts, and was in position for majority rule until Birkhaug’s bout sealed a 57-18 win in the Upstate Eight Conference River Division.

For a team scrambling just to fill its varsity lineup, the North Stars (1-4 UEC River) certainly made the Bulldogs (1-1) sweat in spots.

“Not only do you want to win by points, but you want to win as a team,” Birkhaug said. “Just for morale – and, you know, it’s a real victory when you get more matches than the other team.”

Batavia accepted five forfeits, beginning with Nate Kearney at 170 to start the night.

Once the Bulldogs had opponents to shake hands with, first-year North coach Ben Hummel watched his athletes respond to a recent challenge to amp up their aggressiveness.

There was O’Brien, an upand-coming talent, earning three near-falls in the first period. Thirteen seconds into the second, he figured out

what his holds were lacking and pinned Andrew Esch.

“I think it was just settling in, the turn that I already had,” O’Brien said. “I kind of learned that I maybe need to take things slower and work on technique more when I’m getting my moves.”

After Batavia’s Michael Doranski responded with a major decision at 113 and the Bulldogs took another forfeit, North compiled three consecutive victories.

Working back from a broken leg, Conrad Noverini won a decision at 126. Steve Collins took another decision at 132, and Jake Chantos got a second-period fall at 138.

The North Stars forfeit four of the five heaviest weight classes – freshman Gavin Thatcher lost by technical fall to Nick Offutt at 182 – but remain enthused that their cohesiveness can help accommodate.

“We’re pretty close, the team,” Chantos said. “We

hang out a lot. We interact well.”

Batavia can attest. After meeting for a post-dual huddle and loading up the mat, the Bulldogs retreated to their wrestling room as coach Scott Bayer and Co. distributed T-shirts and other team apparel.

Whether it was practice or equipment pick-up, Birkhaug recalls a room of 23 wrestlers over all levels as a freshman.

This season – Bayer’s second after a lengthy stint as an assistant in the program – nearly 60 Bulldogs are participating in the sport, Birkhaug said.

“He’s tripled the rate of the program. I mean, it’s pretty incredible,” Birkhaug said.

Well, almost tripled, if you want to be technical.

Birkhaug wasn’t yet in test mode, but at that moment, he knew one thing.

“Greatest stress-reliever in the world is wrestling,” he said. “Nothing better.”

Vollbrecht, just a sophomore, had 12 points and eight rebounds.

The Vikings led, 30-21, at the half and scored the first eight points of the third quarter to open up a commanding lead. Geneva’s first 22 points of the second half were scored exclusively by Navigato, Vollbrecht, and Landi, including a slam by Navigato off a nice

feed from Justin Durante.

“I think this is the first game we’ve really, really got it going inside,” Navigato said.

The big guys showed they could shoot a little away from the basket, as well. Landi (15 points) connected on a 3-pointer from the top of the key in the third quarter and Navigato hit one a short time later from the right side.

“They were switching between man and zone and I thought, by and large, it did not disrupt our flow very much, especially after the first quarter,” Ralston said.

“We were getting the kind of shots we wanted and not the kind of shots they wanted us

to take.”

Cole Seger scored 18 points to lead Streamwood.

“I thought our guys came out and they played hard,” Streamwood coach Paul Kowalyszyn said. “They stuck to our game plan. They knew what they were supposed to do and I know the scoreboard and people who haven’t been watching us might say, ‘Oh, they lost again. They lost by 19,’ but to me, they improved today. We took a step in the right direction.”

Chris Parrilli scored 8 points and had six rebounds for the Vikings, who host Larkin tonight in an important conference contest.

STREAMWOOD – The Geneva boys basketball team’s big guys took awhile to get going, but they eventually took command Thursday for the Vikings in a 66-47 Upstate Eight Conference River Division victory over Streamwood.

Geneva’s trio of 6-foot-7 players – Nate Navigato, Mike Landi, and Loudon Vollbrecht – all scored in double figures against the Sabres, whose tallest player in the starting lineup was 6-3.

“We knew we had a size advantage coming into this

game,” said Navigato, who scored 16 points and pulled down seven rebounds. “We’re a big team. We’ve got three 6-7 players. We have Loudon, who’s like 270 [pounds], and Mike and if we didn’t pound it inside, it would have just been a waste of a game here.”

The Vikings (8-2, 3-1) dominated the glass, securing 37 rebounds, 20 more than Streamwood. The Sabres (1-8, 0-4) held an early 6-3 rebounding edge and were up 9-4 before Vollbrecht came off the bench to help give Geneva a spark.

Tri-Cities crew plentiful for bowl-bound Huskies QUICK READ Kevin Druley DeKALB – Much of the Northern Illinois football team’s Tri-Cities contingent remained after practice Thursday, and not just because they’d been summoned by a certain reporter.

Offensive tackle Ryan Brown and linebacker Michael Santacaterina honed their conditioning as wide receiver Matt Williams, a converted quarterback, threw to a teammate wanting extra reps.

While pundits and TV scheduling suggest the Huskies’ Dec. 6 loss to Bowling Green in the Mid-American Conference championship game prompted a sizable plummet, the Huskies are of an optimistic mind. No, Thursday’s Poinsettia Bowl against Utah State in San Diego isn’t the Bowl Championship Series, just the next chance to showcase the program to a national audience.

“The best way to get that taste out of your mouth is to get back on the field and get a win, you know,” Brown said.

“That loss stays for a while, so the only way to get rid of it is win again.”

NIU seeks the school’s first 13-win season after earning a landmark Orange Bowl berth in 2012. Brown (St. Charles North) and former Geneva athletes Santacaterina and Williams are among those who have helped the cause.

Marmion product Bobby Winkel of Batavia has rebounded from knee and foot injuries to resume his role as a key special-teamer.

Northern Illinois linebacker Michael Santacaterina, a Geneva alumnus, switched his number from 52 to 7. Shown during spring practice, Santacaterina and the Huskies are preparing for the Poinsettia Bowl on Dec. 26 against Utah State in San Diego, Calif. and ballcarriers, it’s because he switched jersey numbers from 52 to 7 this season.

Santacaterina shifted to No. 7 because he “wanted to keep it in the family.” Younger brother Daniel wears the number as Geneva’s quarterback, older sister Jackie wore it as a collegiate soccer player and cousin Mike Magee had it earlier in his soccer career.

Magee, a Chicago Fire forward, was selected as most valuable player of Major League Soccer earlier this month.

• Listed at 6-foot-6 and 283 pounds, Brown is playing closer to 290 as he primarily gets snaps at left tackle.

“Definitely a lot bigger,” Brown said. “We had a big year in the weight room because we felt we got pushed around last year in the bowl game, so that was really something we wanted to emphasize. Just getting stronger and everything.”

NIU trailed Florida State, 17-10, after three quarters in the Orange Bowl before the Seminoles pulled away for a 31-10 victory. These days, Florida State is ranked No. 1 and preparing to play Auburn for the national title.

The Seminoles re-entered the Huskies’ stratosphere last week when freshman quarterback Jameis Winston became the youngest Heisman Trophy winner in history, topping a field that included NIU quarterback Jordan Lynch.

“It’s kind of cool that they’re the No. 1 team right now, knowing that we’re … one of the only teams that has come close to them [in a while],” Santacaterina said.

“I know it’s a new quarterback and everything, new team, but it’s just kind of cool to look back, watching them on TV and stuff, knowing that they’ve got some good players on the team.”

• Brown’s older brother, Patrick, recently began work in the private sector after retiring from the NFL as an offensive lineman. Patrick Brown went to training camp with the Carolina Panthers last summer but decided to move on from football after suffering a torn rotator cuff.

• Winkel watched Marmion play twice at Fichtel Field this season. Williams saw Geneva play a regular-season home game (Wheaton North) and also was on hand when the Vikings lost a Class 7A

first-round playoff game to St. Patrick.

“It’s cool going back and watching them play. They’re hooked up now with some pretty cool unis and helmet stickers,” Williams said.

“They’ve got the hook-up now. I’m just glad that they got back on track this year after a tough season a couple years ago. Hopefully, they’ll do even better next year. I’m excited to watch them play.”

• Ryan Brown has not been farther west than Las Vegas, so he happily absorbed a San Diego scouting report from Peter Nelson, a North alumnus who started at both offensive tackle positions for San Diego State.

“He’s told me all the good spots and places to go,” Brown said.

Santacaterina visited the city as a child for one of his sister’s soccer tournaments.

Renown for another Brown: The Illinois Youth Soccer Association recently honored Campton United director of girls coaching Chris Brown as its 2013 girls coach of the year.

Brown was recognized for overseeing the U10, U13, U14, U16 and U17 teams. The U16

girls and boys were especially successful, earning separate President’s Cup state championships.

Brown, who played collegiately at NIU, rejoined Campton United three years ago and boasts more than a decade of coaching experience.

Old teammates, new horizons: Former NFL quarterback Brett Favre linked up with Don Beebe on 41 passes – including four touchdowns – during their time as Green Bay Packers teammates from 1996 to 1997.

Beebe’s recent decision to step down as Aurora Christian football coach but likely remain as offensive coordinator connected the men once more.

Favre recently completed his second season as offensive coordinator at Oak Grove High in Hattiesburg, Miss.

The Warriors won the Class 6A Mississippi state championship Dec. 6.

AURORA – St. Charles East girls basketball players Amanda Hilton and Kyra Washington stayed on the floor throughout Thursday’s game at Metea Valley.

Fortunately for East, the duo still had the energy and the poise to swing the game’s final moments in the Saints’ favor.

Washington scored the night’s last six points in exhilarating fashion, canning a 3-pointer to tie the game with about 50 seconds to play, then converting the decisive threepoint play off a Hilton feed in the lane with 7.1 seconds to go for a 62-59 East victory.

“I was hoping [Hilton] saw it, and she did, so I was pretty excited once I made the layup and got the and-one,” Washington said of the game-winning play.

Hilton, a four-year varsity player, played like the savvy,

senior point guard that the Saints expect her to be, knifing into the lane and recognizing the precise moment to set up Washington for a pointblank shot. The 6-foot-1 junior flipped it in and drew a foul on Metea’s Taseandra Parker, making the free throw.

“It’s basically just a screenand-roll, see if I can go all the way to the basket, but the girl guarding Kyra jumped on me, so I tried to get as far as I could and she rolled and had a defender on her back, and it played out perfect,” Hilton said. “She was wide open, I got it to her and that girl didn’t know what to do, so she fouled, and it was an and-one, so it was great.”

Trestman’s intentions are good, and by no means was he carelessly looking forward or disrespecting the Eagles.

He was offering an honest answer to a timely question, one that may or may not prove to be prophetic as darkness falls Sunday.

If recent NFL history has shown anything, it’s that teams do not help themselves by playing it safe late in the season. Remember the 2009 Indianapolis Colts? They won their first 14 games and decided to take their foot off of the gas to stay healthy for the playoffs. Remember that season? The champion New Orleans Saints sure do.

It’s a high-profile example, but not the only one.

As Trestman said, the

A win could clear the path to a No. 3 playoff seed, which as of now would mean a home game against the San Francisco 49ers. A loss could push the Bears toward a No. 4 seed, which as of now would mean a home game against the Carolina Panthers.

Will those scenarios change? Probably. That’s what makes the NFL great.

So forget the math, coach.

It’s important to note Trestman’s coaching strengths because he clearly has many.

It’s also important to scrutinize Trestman’s decisions as the playoffs approach.

On Sunday night, the Bears (8-6) will visit the Philadelphia Eagles (8-6) in a game that could mean very much or very little depending on the day’s events. Everything is hypothetical at this point, but it doesn’t mean we cannot consider the possibilities.

Long story short, part I: If the Detroit Lions lose to the New York Giants and the Green Bay Packers beat the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday afternoon, then the Bears’ game in Philadelphia will not affect the NFC North race. In this scenario, the winner of the regular-season finale Dec. 29 between the Bears and Packers at Soldier Field would win the division.

LAKE FOREST – After an agonizing, palm-to-forehead type of loss against the Minnesota Vikings three weeks ago, the Bears could have gone into hibernation.

First-year coach Marc Trestman could have let an overtime blunder spoil his season. The atmosphere in the locker room could have turned sour.

None of this happened.

Give Trestman credit for calmly providing stability.

“That’s just the type of coach he is,” running back Matt Forte said Thursday in a jubilant locker room at Halas Hall, where rap music blared and players sang along. “At this level of football, you don’t really see too many coaches who are screaming in guys’ faces or anything like that. They really do treat you like a grown man, and you respond to that better than somebody screaming in your face.”

Check.

Allow less than one sack a game.

Check.

Those were two goals Northern Illinois’ offensive line had at the beginning of the season.

Tailback Cameron Stingily is the first NIU running back since Chad Spann in 2010 to go pass the 1,000-yard mark. He’s at 1,081 heading into Thursday’s Poinsettia Bowl.

Although Stingily was the first running back since Spann to rush for the milestone, the Huskies continue an impressive stretch on the ground and have boasted a 1,000-yard rusher – quarterbacks Chandler Harnish and Jordan Lynch hit the 1,000-yard plateau from

2011 to 2013 – every year since 1999 except for 2008.

The offensive line’s dominance doesn’t end there, as the group allowed just nine sacks on the season, a total tied for fourth in the country.

“At this point in time, [the offensive line has] exceeded our expectations. If you would have told me at the beginning of the season we were going to average 300 yards rushing a game, I’d have told you you’re crazy,” NIU offensive coordinator Bob Cole said. “So they’ve done an outstanding job of opening the holes for these guys. That includes the running backs, that includes the tight ends and fullbacks.

All of them collectively have done a great job.”

The Huskies average 312.5 rushing yards a game, which also ranks fourth in the country behind Auburn (335.7 ypg), triple-option Navy (322) and Ohio State (317.5).

The group was dealt a big blow when starting tackle Tyler Loos, who suffered a broken leg and dislocated ankle Nov. 2 against UMass, was lost for the season. Loos was named a first-team All-Mid-American Conference selection, and the offensive line has continued to play well in his absence.

Loos, Ryan Brown and Matt Krempel had been rotating at the tackle spots, with Brown now at left tackle and Krempel stationed on the right side. NIU also has been able to get redshirt freshmen tackles Josh Ruka and Levon Myers some action, as well as junior guard Tyler Pitt.

“Getting that depth,” Brown said. “Getting those young guys in, that’s the biggest thing is getting guys experience in games, that helps us for retooling the line next year.”

Last season, the group was sort of an unknown. It was

replacing a line of Trevor Olson, Keith Otis, Scott Wedige and Joe Pawlak. The Huskies then had to replace five starters when guard Logan Pegram suffered a broken leg during 2012 fall camp and didn’t miss a beat.

Next season, Volk and Krempel will be gone, but the road already is being paved for the next group of offensive linemen, a unit that seems to be consistently strong at NIU. “I’d say that’s one thing that the older guys do every year. Like through those guys, Wedige and Keith and Joe Pawlak, those guys really take the young guys under their wing and teach the little things that they know and [the young players] can learn those things earlier so they can progress to get better and better every year,” Volk said.

“So that’s something that the old guys tend to do that we’re trying to do with the young guys.”

This nonprofit agency was established 40 years ago as a federal program. The charge was to determine how much help was needed to keep a senior at home, independent and safe.

Involvement in all of the networking on the job could be exhausting, yet Betty keeps up a steady stream of leadership and service to others.

The United Methodist Women group is widely known for mission work locally and throughout the world. Betty serves at the regional level as vice president.

There’s Betty in action when she and other women visited India to celebrate the anniversary of Isabella Thoburn College. She recently returned from Zimbabwe after working to build better relationships among women and keeps up her volunteering with prison ministry.

Betty does have some spare time.

I hear she is in a bowling league, and I know for sure that for each UMW bake sale I have a standing order for one of her world-famous pecan pies.

Mechanical beast turns into road beauty Fuel economy or financial frugality are not reasons to buy a 2014 Lexus LX570.

Priced from $81,780, the full-sized sport utility vehicle averaged 15.6 miles per gallon during a recent test week.

This abundant usage of gasoline is offset by one huge virtue.

One can live like royalty in it.

The LX570 is loaded with power, off-roading and comfort mechanicals and amenities.

Imagine a Toyota Land Cruiser sport utility vehicle on steroids and you have the Lexus LX570.

Lexus, the luxury division of Toyota, has put more power, luxury and room into the LX570 compared to the Land Cruiser, but not by much.

The 5.7-liter, 383-horsepower, dual overhead cam V8 engine can tow a 7,000-pound trailer while carrying a payload of 1,280 pounds. The engine is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.

It is a versatile engine and easily carries the 6,000-pound LX570 along the highway. The engine is a veritable workhorse in fields and rough off-roading terrain.

A transfer case automatically lowers the vehicle when in low range. On the highway, the electronics raise the vehicle to its normal ground clearance of eight inches.

The Environmental Protection Agency rates the LX570’s fuel usage at 12 mpg in the city and 17 mpg on the highway. Gasoline is pumped into a 24.6-gallon tank.

Buyers get a luxurious eight-passenger vehicle including power folding split third row seat (folds and then flips to the sides), power (forward and backward) second row seat, and power (forward or backward, up and down) front leather (heated with memory for three) bucket seats, plus power tilt and telescoping steering wheel.

A six-speed shiftable automatic transmission is mated to a 383-horsepower, 5.7-liter V8 engine in the 2014 Lexus LX570 sport utility vehicle.

BEHIND THE WHEEL Jerry Kuyper (open, close, tilt) also are operated by power. Interior trim includes leather, metal alloys and real wood (not a plastic laminate lookalike).

Storage capacity measures 83.1 cubic feet when the rear two rows of seats have been adjusted properly. When the third row is folded against the walls, the storage width is slightly more than 38 inches.

Running boards on the sides are illuminated and so is the tow hitch and ball mount area in the rear. Puddle lamps guide feet into the front and second rows of seats.

Cruise control and redundant audio controls are mounted

on the power tilt and telescope leather-wrapped steering wheel.

One touch is required for the power open and close, tilt and slide, moonroof.

The four power windows are express up and down and come with anti-pinch protection.

Wide 285 all-terrain Dunlop tires are mounted on 20-inch, five-spoke alloy wheels with a full-size spare stored underneath. The 12- to 13-inch brakes control the wheels well. Other safety equipment includes traction and stability controls, front airbags, side airbags for two rows and (rollover sensing) curtains for three rows, pretensioners and headrests complementing seat belts, rain-sensing variable intermittent wipers, intermittent rear wiper with washer, daytime running lights, a rearview camera, and adaptive

halogen headlamps.

The adaptive front double wishbone suspension is complemented by shocks, arms, coil springs and stabilizer bars.

During the test week, the LX570 traveled several rugged roads and the suspension kept this heavy SUV on an even keel.

Off-roading equipment, besides a transfer case and huge tires, includes auxiliary transmission cooler, differential center lock, limited slip differential (center), tow hooks front and rear, recessed fog lamps, four mud flaps, overhead roof rails and undercarriage protection.

Luxuries are many and include navigation system with voice command, parking sensor, remote keyless entry (doors and liftgate) and smart start, cruise control, air conditioning, zoned climate controls, lighted vanity mirrors, electric foldable and

heated exterior mirrors (reverse tilt to see curb when parking), entertainment system (AM, FM, XM radio, compact disc and MP3 players), clock, compass, outside temperature display, courtesy and reading lights.

A $2,005 option is a DVD rear seating entertainment system that comes with screens and wireless headphones.

Standard inclusions are three power outlets (two 12 volt and one 120 volt), rear vent ducts and reading lights, four-zone climate control, and memory for three drivers (mirrors, steering wheel, audio).

Warranty coverage is four years or 50,000 miles with 24hour roadside assistance, free first maintenance and free lodging if there is a breakdown more than 100 miles from home.

The powertrain has a six-year or 70,000-mile warranty.

By ED SYMKUS More Content Now I’m still not over the hullabaloo that surrounded David O. Russell’s 2012 film, “Silver Linings Playbook.”

Pretty good film, I’ll give it that.

But all that praise, all those tickets sold, all those Oscars? Did I miss something? Why did I like his earlier films, “The Fighter” and especially the brilliant “Flirting with Disaster” so much more?

It really doesn’t matter, now that he’s made this one (though “Flirting” remains my personal favorite).

“American Hustle” takes the Russell formula of making the story’s characters more interesting than the (usually quite interesting) story, and moves it up a couple of notches. This dramatic romantic comedy places its characters – many of them based on real people, but highly tweaked for entertainment purposes – within the context of an equally tweaked true story. The film opens with the snarky disclaimer “Some of this actually happened.”

If you’re old enough, and your memory hasn’t fogged, you’ll recall the FBI’s Abscam sting operation of the late 1970s. If you don’t know what Abscam was, a quick Google check will provide some enhancement to further enjoy the film.

But again, the things going on in the background here don’t come even close in importance to what the characters – every one of them a hustler at some level – are doing.

We’ve got the slick, smooth-talking con man Irving Rosenfeld, based on real-life con man Mel Weinberg (he’ll be in your Google search), played, at the top of his game, by Christian Bale, who put on a pot belly and shaved his head for the role. Then there’s his new business partner Sydney Prosser (Amy Adams, and trust me, this is her breakout role), who knows how to make slinky outfits and a fake accent work in her favor. They do just fine together, after meeting over and realizing they share a passion for the music of Duke Ellington. Their business involves bilking desperate schnooks out of chunks of cash in a bogus loan operation. But they’re caught by ambitious FBI agent Richie DiMaso (Brad-

Bradley Cooper (left) and Christian Bale star in the film “American Hustle.” ley Cooper), who – here comes some of that interesting character business – lives at home with his mom and, this being the late ’70s, wants to look hip, so curls his own hair because curly hair is his idea of hip. This guy is so ambitious, he decides to use the crooked couple to catch other hustlers, making himself look good in the eyes of his hapless boss (Louis C.K.) in the process.

But there’s still room for romance in this movie. Sydney and Irving fall hard for each other, but Richie also falls for Sydney. Hold on, Irving is already married to Rosalyn (Jennifer Lawrence), who appears to be a blithering idiot, but might not be.

And in a plotline that has nothing to do with romance, but everything to do with a budding friendship (and provides a direct link to Abscam), there’s the New Jersey Mayor Carmine Polito (Jeremy Renner), who always wants to do the right thing for his city and its people, and doesn’t give a hoot if it’s exactly legal.

Russell and his co-scripter Eric Singer mash these people and situations together, then add some extra layers to it all. Some voice-over narration by different characters tells us a little more about them, but the filmmakers give that narration a boost by

having it also include plenty of information about the people around them.

They fascinate each other as much as they do us.

While the complications build, and the tale gets a little more sordid, and at the same time becoming funnier, Russell and whoever he teams with about what music should spin through the film, load up the soundtrack with pop tunes as character motifs. Some of the actors even get to lip sync along with Paul McCartney on “Live and Let Die” and with Tom Jones on “Delilah.” Connoisseurs of late ’70s/early ’80s pop music will flip over the inclusion of some prime, previously unreleased ELO material.

The film sure tells a seedy story, but it’s full of heart. Even though one character is spiteful and another is probably quite dangerous (he’s a gangster, and it’s a cool cameo), you like them all. wife and me. We both get along with our in-laws and do many things with both sides of our families. But for some reason, my wife makes arrangements for the holidays without discussing them with me first. This year, she told her mom we would host Thanksgiving and that I would have to tell my family we wouldn’t be coming to them.

My wife’s sisters are not close to their in-laws. Am I wrong to think she should have discussed the matter with me before deciding unilaterally what we’re doing for the holidays? Our kids need to see ALL their grandparents.

Advance medical directives should be readily available Dear Doctor K: This isn’t really a medical question, but I hope you’ll answer it anyway. Where should I keep my advance medical directive?

Dear Reader: You raise an important issue, and I’m happy to address it. In fact, your question is timely, because I have just discussed with my lawyer where to store my advance medical directive. Let me tell you what I’ve learned.

For readers who are not familiar with the term, advance directives are documents that allow you to describe what kind of medical care you hope to receive if an accident or illness renders you unable to communicate. The health-care power of attorney, living will and do-not-resuscitate order (DNR) are all advance directives.

Some people worry that advance directives mean giving up control over their medical treatment. But as long as you are able to communicate decisions, your word overrides anything you’ve written. In fact, I think of my advance directives as my way of maintaining control over how I am treated,

Advance directives enable you to choose the person (your agent) who will make medical decisions for you when you are unable to do so. Using directives, you may offer as much or as little guidance as you like.

Many people understandably want to keep their advance directives in a secure place. But if these documents are locked away in a safe-deposit box, they won’t be much help if you’re unexpectedly hospitalized.

Here are some people who should have copies of your advance directives and other places they should be filed: • Your health care agent.

• Your doctor. A copy of your advance directives should be in your file and medical record.

• Your hospital chart. If there is one hospital where your doctor is likely to hospitalize you, ask to have a copy of your advance directives put in

your chart.

• A safe spot in your home.

File the original documents in a secure place in your home.

Tell your agent, family and friends where you put them.

• Carry it with you. Put a card with your health care agent’s name and contact information and where you’ve put the original copy of your directives in your wallet or purse.

• In the glove compartment of your car. A colleague of mine recommended this, and it seems like a good idea to me.

When I completed my first advanced medical directive, I was a healthy adult in midlife. I had a very small risk of becoming seriously ill. But I wondered why it had taken me so long. At any age, and in any state of health, bad things can happen. Hopefully, that time will never come for me. But if it does, I want to control how I’m treated.

Those who date on a regular basis worry about what to do on their dates, while those who don’t date yet worry about getting dates. But the primary problem for most teens is when to start dating. In fact, maturity, not age, should be the guideline. Some 17-year-olds are not as socially mature as some teens who are 15.

I feel that teens should delay dating until they feel comfortable and self-confident and can take responsibility for their actions. For girls, the 15- to 16-yearold range is about right, and for the boys, who mature a little later, the range is between 16 and 17. But parents will have the final say concerning when you will begin to date.

Don’t allow yourself to be rushed into something you do not feel comfortable with.

• Be ready to go on time. It’s uncomfortable for your date to sit and wait for you.

• Be properly dressed for the occasion. Overdressing, or too much makeup, is as bad as underdressing.

• Always invite your date in and introduce him to your parents.

• Be yourself. Don’t

• Never gossip or run down common friends.

• At the end of the date, if you want to see the boy again, feel free to ask him to call you again.

• Find out what time your date should be home and see that she is home on time.

• If you are driving, obey all traffic laws, don’t speed and never drink and drive.

• Be a gentleman.

Open doors, help her with her coat and pull out her chair.

• Be prepared to pay for all your date’s expenses unless it has been previously discussed with her.

• Ask your date questions. Discover her interests and share yours. Be humble – no bragging.

• Have a good sense of humor.

• If you enjoyed the evening, go for a quick goodnight kiss, but don’t push the issue. “No,” means no.

I’m well aware that many “progressive” teens will find these first date suggestions “old-fashioned” or “out of date,” but common decency and manners are never out of date!

Dear Abby: I have been married to my wife for a year and a half, and we have an infant child. I work while my wife stays home.

My problem is she doesn’t like me playing sports and hanging out with friends.

I have tried to make concessions and cut down playing sports to once a week. (I used to play two or three times a week, but that’s not good enough for my wife.) On game night, when I get home she gives me the silent treatment. She used to come to my games but won’t now, even though she has girlfriends who attend them.

As for hanging out with my friends, I barely see them anymore – and when I do, they come here. If they stay any longer than 30 minutes, it causes a problem and my wife again won’t talk to me for the rest of the night.

I have tried to compromise, but she feels as though any time I spend away from her and the baby is a no-no. Am I wrong to want to play sports and see my guy friends? Except for the occasional passout, every bridge deal begins with the bidding. It is intended primarily to help the side with the balance of power, but each call gives information to the opponents.

In this deal, South opened one spade in the second seat, and North responded three spades, a game-invitational limit raise.

Now South should have raised to four spades because it was unlikely that North could cover all of South’s losers. However, South control-bid four clubs, hoping North had the spade king-queen, diamond ace and a singleton heart. North control-bid four diamonds. And South signed off in four spades, telling the world that he did not have a heart control. Then North, since he did not have one either, passed.

Now it was easy for West to lead the heart nine. East won with his jack, cashed the heart ace and heart king, then led his last heart. Should South have ruffed high or low?

The auction told West what to lead. But it also told South, who almost certainly held the spade queen. East passed as dealer, but had already produced 10 high-card points in hearts. If he had held the spade queen too, he surely would have opened the bidding. So, South ruffed with his spade ace, ran the spade jack through West, and made his contract.
