Kaneland teachers voice frustration over negotiations KANELAND CONNECTION Al Lagattolla SUGAR GROVE – Using words, such as disappointed, disheartened and hurtful, dozens of teachers spoke Monday at Kaneland’s school board meeting, urging the board to work to come to an agreement with the Kaneland Education Association.

The teachers spoke during the public comment portions of the meeting. As a matter of policy, school board members don’t respond to public comments, the first of which came at the beginning of the meeting. But after the board tackled the issues on its agenda – including a refunding of bonds and a review of an energy conservation program – Lori Shroka, the KEA’s president, spoke during the final public comment opportunity.

Shroka pointed out how administrators stressed the money saved with the bond refunding, and how board members fought for savings promised but not yet delivered on the energy conservation program. She asked, “When is it going to be important?” to address the KEA’s quest to retain teachers in the district with salaries it believes would be more competitive with other nearby districts.

Shroka said it was “hurtful to know we are so close” and to “listen to all of this money we will save. …

Where is this extra money going? It’s going back into your savings account.” At a public forum last month, KEA leaders stated the sides were about $500,000 apart, with the KEA suggesting the

Negotiations are set to resume this week.

The school district has added a “BOE/KEA Negotiations” area on its website. According to that information, the board stated its most recent offer would add about $3 million of additional money to the teachers’ salary schedule over the next three years. It added that represents – on average – about a 5 percent increase each year during that period.

Javier Martinez, a high school social studies teacher, identified himself as one of the few teachers who voted against a strike. He said he would consider a strike to be a failure, but he said he believed the district was “crying wolf” and “squirreling away the excess” instead of working to find solutions.

Autumn Gilchrist, a kindergarten teacher, said several former members of her team had left for Geneva School

District 304. Others talked about why they enjoyed their job and didn’t want to leave, such as Janelle McCornack, who read a letter describing her role as “a dream job.”

There was some discussion of the education fund during the meeting.

Board President Teresa Witt, speaking on the bond refunding that promises to save the district more than $7 million over the next 10 years, asked Bob Lewis of PMA Securities whether the district’s reserves had an impact on the district’s success. Lewis said the financial situation is among the “four pillars” that are considered.

Kane County no-refusal operation nets 7 DUI arrests

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – Residents from St. Charles and Geneva were among the seven individuals charged last week as part of the no-refusal operation held by the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office.

State’s Attorney Joe McMahon shared the results of the operation, which was held Wednesday night into early Thursday, during his monthly meeting with reporters Tuesday.

Fourteen police agencies – including Geneva, St. Charles and the Kane County Sheriff’s Office – participated in the event, which McMahon said was the office’s 19th no-refusal operation and fourth held the night before Thanksgiving.

McMahon stressed that “a no-refusal is not a roadblock.”

Rather, he said, suspicious driving prompts a traffic stop, and police work with an assistant state’s attorney to quickly obtain a search warrant to compel a suspected impaired driver to submit to a blood-al-

cohol level test.

He described it as a “way to gather additional evidence.”

The process has gotten quicker with practice, McMahon said. But, he said, quality isn’t being sacrificed.

“It’s critical that it’s done accurately,” he said.

Seven drivers were charged with driving under the influence, McMahon said, describing that as “about average.” He noted a warrant was issued in one case. The motorists’ blood-alcohol levels ranged from 0.20 percent to 0.168 percent, according to the

state’s attorney’s office.

According to the state’s attorney’s office, two drivers from the Tri-Cities were charged: Theodore J. Homewood, 46, of the 1400 block of Sherwood Lane, Geneva, was charged with two counts of misdemeanor DUI. Jordan R. Poole, 30, of the 100 block of Fourth Avenue, St. Charles, was charged with four counts of felony aggravated DUI, two counts of misdemeanor DUI and one count of driving with a revoked license, a misdemeanor.

The date of the no-refusal was selected with input from the DUI Task Force, McMahon said, noting the night before Thanksgiving is historically a time when people go out to socialize.

McMahon encourages people to do that but wants them to do so safely, which is why he announces the no-refusal dates in advance, he said.

“We’re not trying to surprise anybody,” he said.

The date of the next no-refusal operation has not yet been set, he said.

Former 1840s prairie farmstead open to public in Campton Hills

cmenchaca@shawmedia.com CAMPTON HILLS – Sue Lloyd can see the impact Garfield Farm Museum has on its young visitors by their expressions.

The student groups take in everything, from learning what a chamberpot is to throwing corn to the chickens on the property, said Lloyd, the farm board’s vice president.

“You can tell by the look on their faces, they are kind of going ‘Wow,’ ” Lloyd said.

“There are aspects that adults love and aspects that children love.”

Garfield Farm Museum is a historically intact former 1840s prairie farmstead on 281 acres, with livestock and a preserved teamster inn. The museum is on Garfield Road north of Route 38 in Campton Hills.

“That’s basically our three things – history, nature and farming – and showing how they are all interconnected, too,” Garfield Farm Museum Executive Director Jerome Johnson said.

Johnson is a founding farm board member and has served as executive director since 1981. Elva Ruth Garfield, the last family owner, founded the museum in 1977 to teach about America’s prairie farm heritage, according to the farm’s website, www.garfieldfarm.org.

The museum hosts school field trips, seminars and a variety of annual events, including a Candlelight Reception from 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the farm’s 1846 inn.

Several volunteers, including Lloyd, will be dressed in period costumes while live performances take place and light refreshments are served.

The farm’s four full-time staff members rely on volunteer help year-round from up to 180 households in the area.

Continued from page 6 Harmon has been volunteering at the farm for about 18 years. Harmon tries to be at the property every Tuesday and Thursday to help with the animals, make repairs and do whatever else the staff needs.

A retired neighbor who volunteered at the farm had Harmon follow suit after Harmon retired from telephone repair. Harmon said he usually volunteers with Chuck Bauer and enjoys the camaraderie of working on the farm.

The farm is home to two oxen, sheep, geese and many chickens, Lloyd said.

The farm also benefits from various service projects completed on the property. The farm has hosted more than 125 Eagle Scout projects alone since 1983, Johnson said.

There is an ongoing balance between the restoration and preservation so that the farm can continue to host visitors and offer more programming, Johnson said.

Parents should continue to bring children back to the farm so they can not only experience the farm in different seasons, but so the children can see the farm with a mature set of eyes as they grow older, Johnson said.

Students can learn about conservation and how the population depends on a clean environment, he said.

“These are things that are vital to our survival – our knowledge of these things are critical,” Johnson said.

GENEVA – The annual Geneva Christmas Walk begins at 6 p.m. Friday, featuring Santa Lucia, Graham’s candy cane parade, the Great Tree lighting and the welcoming of Santa Claus.

Third Street will be closed to traffic as festivities get underway. Events include a live Nativity scene at Geneva Lutheran Church, at 301 S. Third St.; marshmallow toasting at Country Naturals, at 316 Campbell St.; and carols performed at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 320 Franklin St. Geneva Chamber of Commerce spokeswoman Laura Rush said the balmy forecast for Friday, with highs expected to be in the upper 40s, will set the stage for a lot of people to turn out for the three-day event.

“The phone is ringing off the hook and has not stopped,” Rush said. “They see how nice it’s going to be, and they want to go on the house tour.

Sales are good. We’re getting a lot of first-timers.”

Jeffery Austin, who graduated from St. Charles North High School in 2009, was the third artist announced on the show’s Tuesday broadcast with enough votes to make the semifinals.

Korin Bukowski, one of Austin’s teammates, was eliminated Tuesday. A total of nine singers remain in the competition, including Austin.

“YOU guys did this for me and I’m so grateful,” Austin, 24, tweeted after the results were announced during the first half of the one-hour Tuesday show. “Ready to keep earning your love in the semifinals!”

Austin performed singer Labrinth’s song “Jealous” for his latest performance, which aired Monday.

Each week the contestants who receive the lowest number of votes will be eliminated from the show. Country music star Dolly Parton will mentor the contestants during

LOCAL BRIEFS Secretary of State and state librarian Jesse White is urging students in fourth through 12th grade to enter the 2016 “Letters About Literature” contest – a national reading and writing competition sponsored by the Illinois Center for the Book.

“Letters About Literature” invites students to read a book, poem or play of their choice and write a letter to the author about how the work changed their life or view of the world.

Students can enter on their own or through their schools, libraries or other youth organizations.

There are three levels of

participation: Level I for fourth through sixth grade, Level II for seventh and eighth grade, and Level III for high school.

One Illinois winner will be selected for each level and will receive a $200 cash award.

Teachers of the winning students will receive a $100 cash award to buy materials for their school library.

Winners and teachers will be invited to an awards ceremony in Springfield.

The state winners’ letters will be forwarded for national judging.

ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – A South Elgin teen faces drug-related criminal charges after he was found at a St. Charles Park District property with nearly 18 grams of marijuana, according to a Kane County Sheriff’s Office report.

Police were called to Primrose Farm Park at 5N726 Crane Road in St. Charles Township, just after midnight Thursday after park district personnel saw a silver Nissan Sentra parked there with its engine running, police reported.

According to the report, James Thomas Bletz, 18, told police he smoked marijuana before driving and was high.

KishHealth joins Northwestern Memorial 11

By BRETT ROWLAND browland@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Northwestern Memorial HealthCare announced Tuesday that it had finalized its acquisition of KishHealth System, making it the newest member of Northwestern Medicine. Geneva-based Delnor Hospital also is a member of Northwestern Medicine.

The deal to expand the Chicago-based health system to include six hospitals and 90 facilities across eight Illinois counties had no acquisition price, according to documents filed with the state. Funds belonging to KishHealth at the time of the acquisition will be designated for local use. Just how much money will go into the fund remains to be calculated, officials said.

“We are excited to welcome KishHealth to Northwestern Medicine,” Northwestern Memorial HealthCare President and CEO Dean M. Harrison said in a statement. “The addition of KishHealth to our growing integrated academic health system will allow patients in DeKalb County and northern Illinois even greater access to high-quality care, closer to where they live and work.”

The DeKalb-based health system, which was valued

at more than $329 million, is the largest private employer in DeKalb County. It has two hospitals – 98-bed Kishwaukee Hospital in DeKalb and 25-bed Valley West Hospital in Sandwich – and more than a dozen area clinics and health facilities. This fall, KishHealth also acquired nonprofit behavioral health provider Ben Gordon Center.

The Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board unanimously approved the deal Nov. 17, despite concerns from some residents and law enforcement officials about how it would affect mental health services in DeKalb County.

Officials from KishHealth told the review board that the health system’s commitment to providing mental health services wouldn’t change, but said inpatient mental health facilities weren’t needed in DeKalb County.

Northwestern’s acquisition of KishHealth grew out of talks that started in May. Industry experts have said the deal will benefit both systems. Northwestern Memorial stands to gain market share and a new pipeline for patient referrals to its specialists. In return, KishHealth would have better access to advanced specialists.

“Following a diligent pro-

cess of research and evaluation, we believe the best partnership for our community and for our patients is Northwestern Medicine,” Kevin Poorten, president and CEO KishHealth System, said in a statement. “As a member of Northwestern Medicine, we will be able to address existing clinical gaps and drastically enhance the patient experience, quality of care, and safety for the communities we serve.”

Poorten will remain president of KishHealth.

Officials from the two systems have held preliminary discussions about how to fill health care gaps in DeKalb County, including “the growth of clinical areas such as neurology, pulmonology, cardiology and behavioral health services,” according to a news release.

While the deal was completed Tuesday, patients won’t notice changes immediately, said Christopher King, a spokesman for Northwestern Medicine.

The Northwestern Medicine brand and logo will eventually replace the KishHealth signage, but even that will take time. King said officials would work to make sure patients are made aware of additional changes as KishHealth System is integrated into Northwestern Medicine.

Raise the legal age for purchasing tobacco to 21 BLOOMBERG VIEW Public health in the U.S. has come a long way from the 1960s, when almost half of adults were still smoking. Today that rate is 14.9 percent. The problem is, that’s still far too high. Bolder steps to prevent and reduce tobacco addiction are needed – such as the one Hawaii took last summer when it raised the legal age for tobacco purchases to 21.

Hawaii became the first state to make this change after observing the success of the first such local law, in Needham, Massachusetts.

Since Needham’s ordinance was adopted in 2005, youth smoking there has fallen by more than half. In 2013, New York became the first big city to follow suit (under then-Mayor Michael Bloomberg, the founder and majority owner of Bloomberg LP).

Today, nearly 100 localities in eight states have done so, and more are considering it.

States have been slower to act: the California Senate passed such a bill this summer, and the Massachusetts legislature also is weighing the change.

A higher age limit is a good strategy, because the best way to reduce tobacco addiction is to prevent it. Young people are especially prone to falling into the smoking habit, the evidence shows. Four out of five adult smokers became daily users before they turned 21. No wonder a Philip Morris memo from the 1980s warned, “Raising the legal minimum age for cigarette purchaser to 21 could gut our key young adult market (17-20).”

If not just individual states but the federal government were to raise the smoking age to 21, it could cut future smoking among today’s teenagers by 12 percent, according to the National Academy of Sciences. It would also prevent about 223,000 premature deaths among people born between 2000 and 2019.

Critics make a familiar counterargument: If 18-year-olds can vote and serve in the military, why can’t they light up? It’s a fair point.

This age group also can’t drink alcohol, however, and the case for limiting access to tobacco is stronger, because there’s no safe level of tobacco use.

Moreover, society pays a heavy cost for smoking, in both medical bills and lost productivity. Cities, states and the federal government share a compelling interest in avoiding those costs and helping young adults live longer, healthier lives.

Early loss fuels Vikings in win over Hawks

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com GENEVA – After not losing in their first 11 games of last season, the Geneva girls basketball team was faced with a different test last week.

The Vikings lost the championship of the Glenbard East Tournament to Glenbard North, just four games into the season.

The next test for coach Sarah Meadows’ team? An Upstate Eight Conference crossover game Tuesday night against visiting Bart-

lett.

It was hard to believe the game was tied late in the first half by looking at the final score, but Geneva rebounded in more than one way to pick up the 54-31 victory over the Hawks.

“We just weren’t happy (after the loss),” Meadows said.

“We didn’t come out ready or with any intensity. We talked about what our response was going to be, and my answer was that we have to have a good win tonight. Bartlett is a good team, and we knew that coming in, so I’m super proud

of how we played tonight, especially in the second half.”

After blowing the game open in the second half, Geneva (4-1) cruised to the win, but it wasn’t all smooth sailing as Meadows mentioned.

Tied at 18 with a couple of minutes to go in the first half, the Vikings went to the break on a 9-2 run, capped off by a basket and the foul just before the buzzer by Stephanie Hart. The sophomore made the free throw to give Geneva a seven-point advantage.

But the second half was a completely different game

as the Vikings scored early and often, thanks in large part to 6-foot-2 forward Grace Loberg.

The junior scored 15 points, but more importantly grabbed 11 rebounds.

It wasn’t just rebounding from the 60-57 loss to Glenbard North, but actually getting outworked for rebounds during the first half Tuesday that Meadows felt kept Bartlett (3-3) in the game for a while.

“Boards were the difference,” Meadows said. “We were letting them get up to

four and five chances down there in the first half. Thankfully, they didn’t all go in, or we would have been down at half. We talked at halftime about committing to rebounding and giving them one, maybe two, chances, but not those third, fourth and fifth opportunities.”

Loberg scored 11 of her 15 points in the first half, but Meadows was able to rest the junior once the lead grew to double digits, where it stayed for most of the second half.

A fourth-quarter sequence involving Bair turned the tide for good. Bair was outside the paint when he threw up a wild bank shot that went in. As he hit the floor, the referee called a foul.

“We played hard. We’re just not playing smart right now,” Currie said.

“We knew we had to keep fighting no matter how much we got up by because Bartlett wasn’t going to give up,” Loberg said. “The loss the other day was really a bummer, but it just showed us that we have to come out and work hard every game or practice.

Once we picked up the rebounding and kept at it, we played well.”

Hart and senior Colleen Grady each finished with eight points, while Margaret Whitley added seven. Another contributor was senior Taylor Williams, who may have only had four points, but her defensive effort rallied the Vikings in allowing just 11 points in the second half.

Williams, who had the task of guarding the Hawks’ go-to scoring option in senior Kaitlin Brohan (eight points), was in agreement that the effort wasn’t there in last week’s

loss, and lacked at times in the first half Tuesday, but after Meadows talked to the group at halftime, it was all systems go after that.

“We gave them way too many chances in the first half,” Williams said. “We know we’re better than that, and the rebounding was much better in the second half. It was a good way to come back from a loss to pick up this win tonight and propel us into Friday against Streamwood.”

Friday’s game against the Sabres will open up UEC River play for the Vikings, who feel they will be able to look at the early-season defeat as something that motivated the group into conference play and beyond.

“If I’m being honest, I think the loss was a good thing,” Meadows said. “It was a teaching point not only for the girls, but for myself. It was an eye-opener, and the girls know the effort needed to be better and responded very well tonight.”

Counterpart Austin Macias of Burlington Central won more matches at 106 and also captured regional and sectional titles, which contributed to the fantasy lineup shift.

The climb, it turns out, was only the beginning for the returning Class 3A state tournament qualifier. The lanky O’Brien will wrestle at 126 as a junior after continuing to grow and developing throughout a rigorous offseason.

“For him, I think it’s just growing into his body a little bit,” North Stars coach Ben Hummel said. “He lost a lot of weight last year to get down to 106, and now he’s kind of filled out a little bit. He’s just got a good, natural feel.”

O’Brien finished 31-11 as a sophomore after winning 35 bouts as a freshman.

He has opened his third varsity season with promise, advancing to the finals of the Conant Invitational this past weekend before falling to St. Charles East senior Anthony Rubino by a 4-2 decision.

“It was big for Kolbe to have a solid first tournament,” Hummel said. “He’s up three weight classes from where he was last year, and to wrestle how he did just shows he’s right there with the top guys even moving up three weights.”

Rubino, a Northern Illinois recruit who won 43 matches last season en route to a fifthplace state finish, figures to be a frequent barometer during tournaments and the schools’ Jan. 29 dual at North.

Caged ‘Dogs: Further UEC shuffling entering the school year created a handful of scheduling quirks for River duals. Batavia again will host Geneva, and also will travel to East for the second successive season.

erally occupied center stage, as the Bulldogs entertained their longtime rivals at the Batavia Fine Arts Center before a vibrant capacity crowd.

Although there won’t be an encore at the BFAC this time around, Batavia coach Scott Bayer still promises big-ticket treatment for the Dec. 17 event in the school gym.

“Kind of a cage fight atmosphere with some sound and lighting,” Bayer said.

“We’re hoping to get hundreds and hundreds of people here, so that should be good.”

Following its usual protocol, Batavia is testing itself against a collection of traditional powers in the early season. The schedule already has included meetings with Glenbard North, Lincoln-Way Central and Minooka.

“It definitely lets them know where they’re at, and they don’t lose sight of what they’re trying to be,” Bayer said. “When you open the season with Glenbard North, which is perennially one of the better teams in the state, you definitely know who is capable of stepping up, and you get an idea of that.”

Brand new Saints: East welcomes three accomplished freshmen to its lineup this season in Justin Benjamin (113), Ben Anderson (120) and Darrell Gregg (195).

Each of the three enjoyed Illinois Kids Wrestling Federation success before high school and is accumulating valuable varsity bouts to open the season. Gregg (sixth), Benjamin (seventh) and Anderson (eighth) reached place matches at the Conant Invitational.

“You can practice all you want and train all you want, but until you actually go out there and get that experience, it’s something that is really vital,” Saints coach Jason Potter said.

Naturally, Potter noticed his younger wrestlers “kind of made some freshmen mistakes” during the course of the tournament. Their attentiveness in Monday’s practice, however, was reassuring for the group’s growth.

“They competed hard, and that makes me confident going forward,” Potter said. “We made some mistakes, but then we watched film and learned from them.”

The St. Louis recruit, the Kane County Chronicle-St. Charles Bank & Trust Athlete of the Week, is eager to maintain her success as Upstate Eight Conference River Division play starts this week. Chronicle sports editor Kevin Druley spoke with Frazier about her efforts. Here’s an edited transcript: How important was it to simply get out there and compete in the tournament?

We learned a lot about ourselves this weekend and this past week. The win against Trinity was huge for our con-

fidence going into conference play this week. … We’re still working out some kinks, but I’m really excited for the season.

What made the difference in the Trinity game?

The biggest thing was we just didn’t take anything for granted. We said that we were going to hang with one of the top teams in the state. We were going to frustrate them with our pressure on defense and then turn that into points on offense. That is a big part of what we did.

Did you see that St. Louis changed its Billiken logo?

That was exciting, and apparently it’s working. Because, you know, they’re 6-0 (through Tuesday).

LAKE FOREST — The Bears are entering new territory this week – they’re favorites, and in the hunt for an NFC wild-card spot with five games to go.

Coach John Fox’s bunch returned from a weekend off after its biggest win of the season on Thanksgiving night and will host the 3-8 49ers, who are 0-5 on the road this season, at noon Sunday.

“Just keeping focus on being the same guy, not looking at the scoreboard, whether in the course of the game, or whether you won last week or lost last week, just preparing,” Fox said about avoiding any overconfidence. “We have a slogan in there, ‘You fail to prepare, you prepare to fail.’ ” Fox acknowledged the desire to play in relevant games down the stretch, but of course cautioned any looking ahead by his players.

“I think the whole thing is having meaningful or relevant games. You want to put yourself in that position, but you definitely want to keep the focus small,” he said. “All our focus right now is on the San Francisco 49ers.”

Tracy Porter said the attitude is slightly different after Thursday’s win, knowing that playoffs are more than just a pipe dream at this point.

“It’s a little bit different knowing that we’re coming

“We just want to take each game to heart like it’s a playoff game, and at the same time we never put playoffs out of the question for us.”

Right place, right time, right habits: Porter has a knack

for making interceptions at clutch times in his career, certainly none more important than his pick-six in Super Bowl XLIV. Against the Packers, Porter had a fourth-quarter pick and another pass defensed on third-and-goal. How much of it is luck?

“Luck maybe comes around once or twice, but if it starts to happen repetitively, you just say you have a knack for it,” he said. “I kind of have a pretty good feel for the game, I know what’s going to

happen in certain situations, I have a feel for it. I’m not going to say I know what’s going to happen, although it may look like that, I don’t know what’s going to happen.

I just have a good feel for it, reading my keys, trusting my abilities and trusting that front seven that they’re going to force the quarterback to make an errant pass.”

Long snapper switch: The Bears cut Thomas Gafford on Saturday and signed Patrick Scales to be the new snapper.

Fox addressed the move Monday, citing some issues in the kicking operation of late.

“Thomas Gafford did a lot of great things for us. He was a good man, the kind of guy [you want] in this building,” he said. “We struggled over the last three weeks a little bit in our consistency, in particular our short snaps. We had one go a little bit haywire in the Green Bay game.”

Injury update: There was no injury report, but Antrel Rolle, Eddie Royal and Ka’Deem Carey were not at practice. Martellus Bennett, who missed Thursday’s game, was participating in the portion open to the media.

Note to readers: This column is an update of one that originally appeared in October 2011.

Then, your pharmacist labels your bottle with an expiration date that’s usually one year from the day your prescription is filled.

So the expiration date you see on your pill bottle is usually sooner than the expiration date the drug company has assigned your pills.

Expiration dates shouldn’t really matter with a medicine to treat a temporary problem – like taking an antibiotic for strep throat, for example.

You should have swallowed the last medicine long before its expiration date.

And expiration dates shouldn’t matter for a medicine that you are supposed to take regularly for a chronic problem, such as to keep your blood pressure normal. If you are taking the medicine as prescribed, it should never have an expiration date that already has passed.

In fact, expiration dates should be an issue only when you have a medicine for a recurring temporary problem. I’m thinking of a strong pain pill for back pain that flares up from time to time, for example, or an antibiotic for a recurrent urinary tract infection.

Remember that the favorable results I mentioned apply to medications that have been stored properly. Always keep your drugs in a cool, dry place in their original containers. And toss out medicines you no longer need. Their presence in your medicine cabinet can be confusing and could cause you accidentally to take the wrong pill.

Dr. Wallace: I’m 16 and have been going with a guy for over a year, and I love him very much. And when I dream about him, we are married and have three children and live in a nice house with blue shutters near a lake.

My parents and I are very religious and we attend church regularly. I do believe that sex should be saved until after marriage. My problem is that my boyfriend is sexually aggressive and nearly every time we are together he tries to convince me to have sex with him because we are in love.

’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace When I was 16, I met my hero. He was 17, very cute, had a great sense of humor and was an excellent student.

I fell head-over-heels in love with him. Two months after I accepted his “going steady” ring, he started getting frisky.

I told him that I was a virgin and wanted to stay that way, but he wouldn’t take no for an answer. Finally, one night I gave in because he threatened to leave me if I wouldn’t “prove my love” for him.

For the next three months, we had sex almost every time we went out. I thought we were pregnant-safe because he used protection. But I still got pregnant and I was devastated when I told my boyfriend and all he said was that he was sorry, but he did not know how to help me.

By this time I knew his mom pretty well, so I spoke to her and she was sympathetic but not very helpful. Then a month later, his family said they had been transferred to Canada, and that’s the last I saw of them. His mother’s parents also lived in Canada.

Finally, I could not wait

any longer and had to tell my parents. It was the worst day of my entire life and they were terribly disappointed but did all they could to help me. I had my baby and gave him up for adoption.

I’m now 18 and living at home with my parents, but I feel like a lonely old woman at times. I often wonder about my son and feel cheated that his father got off without a hassle and my son is denied a father and support. I feel used and abused, physically and emotionally. I also feel really stupid for allowing my boyfriend to convince me that sex is love.

I guess I knew all along that it wasn’t, but I didn’t want to lose my boyfriend. Sometimes I wonder if I had continued to say no we would still be together.

Dr. Wallace, I’m writing this letter to all the girls who are being pressured into having sex with their boyfriends.

Please, girls, don’t fall for the “if you really love me, you’d do it” line. Take it from someone who paid a heavy price for the learning experience. Whenever a guy is trying to convince you that sex is love, just substitute the word “lust” for “love.” –

Dear Dr. K: Sometimes the pills in my medicine cabinet reach the expiration date. Do I really need to throw them out? They can be expensive.

Dear Reader: The two questions to ask about pills that are past their expiration date are: Do they lose their strength, and do they become toxic or harmful?

There is little evidence that outdated medications become toxic or harmful.

However, some drugs do lose their potency, or effectiveness, over time.

The most notable is nitroglycerin, which should be replaced every six months.

The epinephrine in EpiPens also loses its potency past its expiration date.

You absolutely do not want to take the risk of needing a nitroglycerin pill to treat sudden heart pain – and having the pill not work.

Likewise with EpiPens to stop a severe allergic reaction.

In addition, liquid drugs are less stable than tablets or powders. Liquid drugs include oral suspensions and solutions and injectable products. As a general rule, I would get a fresh refill of liquid drugs when they pass their expiration date.

Most drugs, however, retain their strength past their expiration dates. In one study, for example, researchers tested 96 different drugs stored in their original containers.

They found that more than three-quarters of these drugs would remain stable for nearly five years beyond their expiration dates. And a study of two anti-influenza drugs found that these drugs remained fully active after 25 years of storage!

Drug companies generally give their products an expiration date two to three years from the date they’re manufactured.

Every one of them, except my current live-in, “Amanda,” would dress up in lingerie when I asked them to.

Two no-trump will at least find your side’s better minor-suit fit, but is aggressive with such unimpressive suits.

Also, if they win the auction, you will have given their declarer a complete map of the deal.

One columnist recommended pass, but said two diamonds was acceptable.

I think two diamonds is the worst choice. Either stay out or make sure you find the right fit and potentially frustrate the opponents.

Here, over two diamonds, partner might well pass, and the contract will fail. But over two no-trump, he will bid three clubs, and that can be made, for example, by establishing the diamonds.
