By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles man charged in last week’s crash that killed a 65-year-old woman remained in jail Monday on $1 million bond, according to online records from the Kane County Sheriff’s Office.

Joshua E. Spudich, 23, of the 400 block of South Second Street, faces four counts of aggravated driving under the influence, a Class 2 felony; possession of a controlled substance, a Class 4 felony; driving u n d e r t h e Joshua influence of E. Spudich drugs, a Class A misdemeanor; driving with a revoked license, a Class A misdemeanor; and improper lane use, a petty offense.

He is expected in court Dec. 10.

Spudich suffered minor injuries in the crash, which happened about 2 p.m. Friday at North Second Street and Timbers Trail in St. Charles.

St. Charles police spokesperson Lisa Blackwell said a community service officer happened upon the headon collision and notified the city’s dispatch and patrol units. According to police, Spudich was driving a 2003 Hyundai Santa Fe south on Second Street when he drifted across the center median and struck a northbound 2004 Toyota Corolla driven by Susan Gorecki.

Blackwell said the 65-yearold St. Charles woman was wearing a seat belt. Blackwell did not have information about how fast the vehicles were traveling.

Gorecki was taken to Delnor Hospital in Geneva. Hospital staff later notified police, indicating she had died of her injuries, Blackwell said.

Kane County Coroner Rob Russell said Monday an autopsy confirmed the preliminary cause of death was directly related to the accident.

Toxicology samples also were collected and sent to a forensic lab for results.

Russell, who has taken heat from county officials about being over budget, said in a statement that this acci-

dent demonstrates why his office needs to perform a thorough investigation.

“This office speaks for Susan Gorecki and her family in definitively determining the cause and manner of her death,” he said. “Some would argue it an unnecessary expense, I call it due diligence and respect. We owe it to the Gorecki family to serve Susan and her family properly through this tough time. They and all Kane County families are worth the expense of a thorough ... death investigation based on the best current national standards.”

One of Gorecki’s neighbors reacted with shock Saturday about the fatal crash.

“It’s heartbreaking,” said Chandler Claps, who lives on Green Willow Lane a few doors down from Gorecki’s home. “Our hearts are with the family.”

St. Charles resident Julie Novak, who lives near the crash scene, said she doesn’t know those involved in the incident, but she reacted strongly to it.

“It’s just a tragedy all the way around,” she said, noting an acquaintance of hers was

injured by an impaired driver this year. “He lived; this lady didn’t.”

North Second Street remained closed to southbound traffic until about 6 p.m. Friday. The St. Charles Police Department and Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team investigated the crash.

The city’s last fatal accident happened in 2010, Blackwell said. In that case, police reported that a 69-year-old woman was pushing her bicycle across West Main Street at Route 31 when a dump truck turning onto Route 31 hit her.

This is not the first time Spudich has been charged in Kane County. His past charges include unlawful possession of alcohol in April 2010 in St. Charles and, in Geneva, driving under the influence of alcohol in August 2010.

In November 2010, he and three other teens were accused of robbing a group in a park in unincorporated St. Charles Township. He was charged with aggravated robbery in that incident.

STC City Council approves $21M levy

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles City Council on Monday unanimously approved an annual tax levy amount smaller than the 2013 levy.

St. Charles aldermen voted, 10-0, to approve an ordinance for a tax levy of $21,031,822, which is $332,770 less than the city’s actual 2013 levy.

A public hearing was held Monday specifically for the levy before the council’s vote, but no residents spoke at the hearing or sent any messages about the levy to the city.

Although the levy is slightly lower this year, the actual effect on taxpayers could vary based on the change in the city’s equalized assessed value, St. Charles Finance Direc-

City staff has estimated the 2014 EAV of property in St. Charles will decrease by about 3 percent compared to the 2013 EAV, Minick said at the public hearing.

Minick said he anticipates the EAV is going to slowly improve in a couple years.

“The market tends to recover quicker than the EAV does,” Minick said at the hearing.

More than half of the $21 million tax levy is devoted to operations in the amount of $12,055,117.

The $12 million operational portion has not changed since 2009, Minick said, giving the example of a six-year tax savings of about $282 for a home with a $300,000 market value.

“I solemnly, sincerely and truly declare,” he said, stating the oath of office in a crowded Kane County board room, “that I will faithfully discharge the duties of the office of sheriff of Kane County, Illinois, to the best of my ability, so help me God.” Brawka administered the oath of office to re-elected County Board members and newly elected members John Martin, R-Geneva; Bill Lenert, R-Sugar Grove; and Donald Ishmael, D-Aurora.

Kramer was elected Nov. 4, defeating his opponent, sheriff’s deputy Lt. Willie Mayes.

It was Kramer’s second time running for sheriff. He lost to Pat Perez in 2010.

Among those standing with Kramer were his wife, Kelly, his daughter, Holly, an eighth-grader at Geneva Middle School South, as well as his mother-in-law, Barbara Shannon, and his sister, Denise Bumbar, both of Batavia, and his father, George Kramer, currently of Corunna, Michigan. The elder Kramer was Kane County sheriff from 1978 to 1986.

“I’m very proud to have my son elected sheriff of Kane County,” George Kramer said. “I know he will do a good job. This is a great day for the county, for my family.

We’re all very proud of him.”

family and made it important for each one of us,” Donald Kramer said.

Also standing with him were Geneva police officer Eddie Jackson, retired Batavia police officer Dennis Harper and current Deputy Lt. Thomas Bumgarner, all of whom supported Donald Kramer’s campaign.

In one of his first acts as sheriff, he appointed Bumgarner as his chief deputy, as his second in command, a position formerly known as the undersheriff. Lt. Pat Gengler served as undersheriff under

Perez. Donald Kramer said Gengler would continue in his position as public information officer where “he’s done a very good job.”

Bumgarner said he was “blessed and honored for the promotion” to chief deputy.

“Don and I both started 35 years ago in the sheriff’s office on the same day,” Bumgarner said. “And we’ve been friends since the day we started.”

Donald Kramer would not confirm other positions in his administration for either Jackson or Harper, who was

his campaign manager.

“I’m so proud of Don,” Harper said. “He’s just been a leader all his life, and he made a promise that day at the courthouse [when Donald Kramer announced his candidacy] that he would serve and protect Kane County – all the people of Kane County – and here he is today. He’s going to complete that promise.”

Jackson said he has known the Kramer family for about 25 years. Donald Kramer’s brother, Duane Kramer, hired Jackson to work at the youth home and mentored

him as he became an officer in Geneva.

“Basically, I believe in him, and I think he’s going to do a great job,” Jackson said.

“And with his servant leadership heart and his love for the family and the people of Kane County, I think it’s going to be a great four years.”

Among other changes Donald Kramer said he would be making at the sheriff’s office would be choosing his own command staff of leadership. He said he would be choosing four directors who would be responsible for different divisions, such as administration, public safety, courthouse security and corrections.

“I want the most qualified people doing the work,” he said. “I am pretty driven to get this job right. I can’t do it all myself. I have to surround myself with competent people.”

He said he requested resumes from lieutenants who wanted to be considered for director positions, with about half showing interest. Another change will be requiring lieutenants to be out on patrol, he said.

“Those are lieutenants currently sitting behind a desk,” he said. “It’s hard to oversee people from behind a desk in an office ... a lieutenant should be in a squad car just like the current supervisors are.”

Donald Kramer acknowledged he was critical of how the sheriff’s office operated, and not having a lieutenant on duty from Friday night through Monday morning was a particular sore point.

“By the end of the week, the lieutenants will know what their assignments are, and by Saturday at midnight, we will have an administrator on 24/7,” he said. “I have a lot of work ahead of me, and I want to be sure we do this the right way. I’m going to interview all 311 employees – every single one of them. I’m going to take a while and see what they have to say.”

BATAVIA – A Batavia-based company that manufactures metal litter scoops is claiming that PetSmart breached a contract with the company.

Charles Firth, owner of DurAnimals and creator of the DuraScoop line of cat litter scoops, said PetSmart in May stopped selling his product after 10 years of brisk sales and replaced it with a knockoff.

“From 2004 to 2014, it was their number one-grossing litter scoop,” Firth said.

“They made a knockoff of our product.”

In response to the complaint, PetSmart corporate communications manager Erin Gray said as a standing

practice, PetSmart doesn’t comment on pending claims.

According to Firth, PetSmart was required to give his company a threemonth warning as part of a signed vendor agreement. He said he is stuck with tens of thousands of PetSmart-branded scoops and has filed a $346,981 claim with the American Arbitration Association.

“Had they told us, we would have stopped making them,” Firth said.

DuraScoop also sells products through websites, such as Amazon.com and wholesalepet.com. The company’s metal litter scoop also was used to clean tar balls from beaches in Alabama and Louisiana after the Deepwater Horizon oil rig spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010.

No plea deal yet in zoo cruelty case

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The attorney for the owner of a traveling zoo charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty and neglect said she hopes a plea offer will be made before the next court appearance, scheduled for Jan. 5.

Elgin resident Stacy Fiebelkorn was charged in March after the discovery of several dead and 94 sick and starving animals that were part of her now-defunct Mini Zoo Crew. The animals were removed from the Hampshire farm where they were being kept.

Fiebelkorn attorney Jamie Wombacher said no of-

fer had been made from the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office since the last court appearance in October. If an offer is acceptable to both sides, Fiebelkorn would not have a trial, officials said.

Assistant State’s Attorney Joseph Cullen said he would not discuss specific plea negotiations, but he said most of the office’s cases did result in plea agreements instead of trials.

All of Fiebelkorn’s animals were impounded, then forfeited, including horses, donkeys, ponies, goats, llamas, alpacas, chickens and rabbits. Most survived through veterinary care and eventually were rehabilitated enough to be adopted out.

asloboda@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – As Craig Foltos invited children to help him sing Christmas carols during Sunday evening’s Celebration of Lights Festival, he asked them to do one thing: be loud.

“Last year, we had a problem,” the local business owner said. “Last year, Santa Claus almost missed Batavia because we did not sing loud enough.”

Backed by the Batavia Community Band on the Peg Bond Center stage, Foltos and the children sang “Jingle Bells,” “Rudolph the RedNosed Reindeer,” “Frosty the Snowman,” “Silent Night” and “Here Comes Santa Claus.”

Soon enough, the jolly old elf himself could be seen, prompting excited cries of “I see him!” from children.

Kari Felkamp of the Batavia Park District said people began lining up to meet Santa at 5 p.m. – half an hour before the festival officially began.

With temperatures around freezing, Felkamp said the weather was “definitely on our side” this year.

The turnout was fantastic, she said, noting the event is one of the park district staff’s favorite to put on.

But, she noted, other community members contribute to the festivities – including the city, the police department, the Batavia Chamber of Commerce and Batavia MainStreet – so it’s more like a “community collaboration.”

Local organizations also decorated 25 trees, which competed for the People’s Choice Award.

Voting began on Facebook on Wednesday and ended at noon Sunday, Felkamp said.

Girl Scout Troop 4953 won with a tree decorated as Olaf from “Frozen.”

As a reward, troop members were invited onstage to be recognized and helped in the lighting of the community tree, Felkamp said.

Closed door limits spread of fire in Campton Hills home KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com CAMPTON HILLS – A laundry room fire caused $75,000 in damage Saturday to a Campton Hills home, according to a news release from the Fox River and Countryside Fire/Rescue District.

Firefighters arrived at 1:45 p.m. Saturday at the 7N300 block of Fox Bend Drive to find smoke coming from the rear of the single-family, two-story residence, the release states.

The fire reportedly was in the first-floor laundry room area, and the situation was under control by 2 p.m. According to the release, the fire had been burning “for some

time,” but the fire’s growth was limited by a closed door between the laundry room and kitchen.

“Melted items on shelving indicated extreme heat had been present during phases of fire growth,” the release states, noting “extensive overhaul” is required in the room.

Smoke damage also was present throughout the home.

Damage to property was estimated at $25,000, and damage to contents was estimated at $50,000. The homeowner told fire officials he left around 11 a.m. and returned about 1:30 p.m. to find light smoke in the home, according to the release.

No injuries were report-

ed. A dog reportedly was removed from the house before the fire department’s arrival.

Light Show won a contest on ABC-TV last year. That was turned on at 5 p.m., after a short proclamation by Elburn Village President Dave Anderson, who said he was pleased to be “given the opportunity to open a new chapter in the holiday observance here in Elburn.”

Much of the activity took place in the library’s youth services area. Dwayne Nelson, the library’s youth services and reference librarian, said he expected about 1,000 visitors to the library.

ELBURN – Marquis Hough walked along Route 47 on Saturday night in Elburn, wearing an outfit that included ornaments, holiday lights and artificial Christmas tree greenery.

Marquis Hough, whose mother, Liz, owns the Beautiful U Resale Shop, was getting into the spirit of the Elburn Chamber of Commerce’s annual Christmas Stroll. He smiled as a few people looked a couple of times after noticing Hough wasn’t a mere decoration.

“The first time they see it, they are just kind of shocked, ‘This is a moving tree,’ ” Marquis Hough said, adding he enjoyed the experience.

The Beautiful U store was among many Elburn businesses participating in the Christmas Stroll, which this year shifted to a Saturday afternoon that just happened to also be Small Business Saturday. Activities took place at the Town and Country Public Library, Lighthouse Academy and Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District.

Many businesses stayed open later than usual, and

crowds at each attraction. He said the library’s staff will work hard on the decorations, and it is gratifying to see a strong response. He also praised artist Val Pieroni, who decorates the library’s windows and many windows of businesses around town.

Elburn resident Anne Kuntz was at Beautiful U. She said she always goes to the Christmas Stroll, and she marked her calendar for the traditional date, which is the first Friday in December.

Batavia woman pleads guilty in robbery case

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com A 21-year-old Batavia woman accused of robbing an acquaintance has pleaded guilty to one of the felonies she faced, according to Kane County court records.

Desiree L. Smith initially faced felony charges of robbery and mob action and two counts of misdemeanor battery for the Oct. 7 incident in which she and a man were accused of robbing and attacking a 16-year-old former acquaintance in Batavia.

In a plea agreement Nov. 20, Smith pleaded guilty to

robbery, a Class 2 felony, and the remaining charges were dropped, records show.

According to court documents, Smith took oneeighth of an ounce of marijuana from the teen.

Batavia police have said the teen was not seriously in jured in the Desiree attack and L. Smith that issues regarding her possession of marijuana were being handled within the police department.

Records indicate Smith

was sentenced to 48 months of probation and 90 days in jail, for which she received 45 days of credit for time served.

Smith also must pay $1,915 in fines and costs, including a monthly probation fee of $20, according to records.

Tanner J. Smith – who faces the same charges as Desiree Smith did in the Oct. 7 incident – remains in custody and is expected in court Dec. 17, online records show.

The Smiths are not related but were in a romantic relationship, police said at the time of their arrest.

She was born July 25, 1937, in Neenah, Wisconsin. Marietta was the oldest of 4 children born to lifelong Wisconsin residents, Everal and Eleanor Pelton.

Marietta graduated Summa Cum

Laude from Wayland Academy in 1956. She went on to attend the University of Wisconsin where she met her husband of nearly 60 years, John Landwehr. They were married in 1958.

Soon after, Marietta (known affectionately as “Mert”) and John moved from Wisconsin to Geneva Illinois where they raised their family, Eric, Tom, and Barbara. The Landwehr’s spent nearly 35 years in Geneva where Marietta was an active member at the United Methodist Church. She also served on the Board of the Geneva Park District where she worked diligently to pass a referendum that helped fund what is now known as the Geneva Recreational Center.

During her time in Geneva, Marietta also participated in several social activities including numerous Book Clubs, Bridge Club, and Golf groups where she developed several life-long friends.

In 1985, Marietta and John retired to Egg Harbor Wisconsin and Palm Springs California. During this time they continued to participate in various activities including Horseshoe Bay Golf Club.

Most importantly, Marietta enjoyed her retirement years as time to develop new friendships, entertaining family, and giving back to those she loved.

Marietta enjoyed all life had to

offer. She took pride in giving 110% to everything she did. She would say, “If it is worth doing at all, it is worth doing right!” She strived for perfection as a Wife, Mother, Grandmother, and Friend. She had struggles later in life with various health issues. In spite of these challenges she always managed to smile. Her appearance was always impeccable, her smile was effusive, and her love unconditional.

The family will host a Memorial Service in Egg Harbor Wisconsin this Summer, 2015.

A Memorial has been established in Marietta’s name at Calvary United Methodist Church, PO Box 168, County Rd E, Egg Harbor, WI. 54209.

Kuntz, embracing the Christmas spirit with large snowman earmuffs, said her Christmas Stroll experience had been pleasant. She showed off a “retro Santa decoration” she would be buying at Beautiful U, and said she had enjoyed a visit to the Corner Grind. She was headed to more businesses and, eventually, the library.

“I love walking downtown here,” she said. “It’s one of the reasons I moved here.”

At Beautiful U, store owner Liz Hough said the shop had been busy all weekend.

She said it provided a great opportunity to share Beautiful U’s mission of providing a “Christ-centered, family-style intervention program for atrisk pregnant teens and teen mothers.” The business has been in its downtown Elburn location since April, and she said there have been so many donations that it’s been difficult to keep up.

“We’ve been very blessed,” she said.

Caitlin Hathaway, who volunteers at Beautiful U, said those who run the store were “incredibly inspirational.” She said she has been impressed with their graciousness and kindness, and that they help many who are in need. She smiled as she watched groups of people walk through the store, either to browse the merchandise or to sample cookies and refreshments.

At Schmidt’s Towne Tap in downtown Elburn, people were gathering for the post-Christmas Stroll raffle drawing. Westfall called the turnout for the festival “extraordinary.” He said organizers sold “way more raffle tickets” than they thought they might. He said the raffle raised $3,000. He said it went well, “the mayor gave a speech and the lights went on, it was perfect.”

“It’s what it’s supposed to be,” Westfall said.

The spirit of holiday giving We’ve got a great idea as to what you can do with the money you saved from all those Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday deals you likely snatched up during the past few days.

Giving Tuesday.

Giving Tuesday – which is today – falls on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving and is a designated day of giving to charity. The United Nations Foundation is given credit as one of the originators of Giving Tuesday, which was first held in 2012 and was created as a global day of giving back.

In Illinois, Donors Forum is coordinating this initiative, and it has a bold goal: $12 million raised by Illinois nonprofits from 100,000 individual donors – in one day.

More than 600 nonprofits in the state have signed up with Donors Forum to take part in Giving Tuesday.

You can visit its website, https://donorsforum.org, to find a charity you would like to donate to.

Of course, it doesn’t have to be on that list in order to donate. Maybe there a local nonprofit that has provided a service that benefited you, and you’re now in a position to give back.

Or maybe you want to start a new tradition of giving to those in need each holiday season. Giving Tuesday can be the day you annually bestow that gift.

Nonprofits provide much-needed services in our communities. From programs for children to providing food and shelter to helping veterans – and everything in-between – nonprofits are there to help some of our most vulnerable neighbors.

Most nonprofits have been hit hard by the state’s financial woes: They usually wait months for money owed to them by Illinois, and often are lucky if it comes at all. And at the same time, the needs of our neighbors increase, putting even more strain on our nonprofits.

The holidays should not be just about getting, but about giving as well.

This is a gift you don’t even need to wrap and top with a bow. You don’t need to give a lot to make a diference.

It just needs to come from the heart.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR WORTH YOUR ATTENTION To the Editor: What do ice buckets and veterans have in common?

The press did an excellent job of reporting about last summer’s ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, the wildly viral campaign during which millions of people doused themselves with buckets of ice water to raise awareness of ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease.

But how many people who accepted the challenge realize they also were supporting our nation’s military veterans? That part of the story was not

reported in the press.

Studies have shown military veterans are about twice as likely to die from ALS as people who have not served in the military, according to information at www.alsa.org.

It doesn’t matter when or where they served in the military – home or abroad, peace or war, from World War I to Afghanistan. Those who served are at greater risk.

So, as we recently honored our military heroes on Veterans Day, your readers should know that if they had a bucket of ice water dumped

on their heads this summer, they did their part not just to support ALS, but also to support our veterans.

I encourage your readers to visit the Wall of Honor at www.alsa.org/ wallofhonor.

There they will see the faces and read the stories of the military heroes who are fighting ALS and those who have been lost to the disease.

Their stories of courage are an inspiration and worth your attention.

PUTTING IT TOGETHER Rosary’s Yager uses past experience to shine at state

A

lexis Yager touched the Evanston pool wall before any other IHSA girls swimmer as last month’s 200-yard individual medley state final concluded.

It took Yager awhile to adorn her bedroom wall with the fruits of her Nov. 22 labor. She admittedly let that medal and the others she earned for Rosary sit on the kitchen counter of her Batavia home through the early stages of the following week.

Talk about a Thanksgiving centerpiece.

With the holiday now passed, Yager has moved on from the initial euphoria of the ultimate success at the state meet. For the Kane County Chronicle Girls Swimmer of the Year, much of that process hinges around preparing to do even better in 2015.

“I love tapering and getting really close to a meet and just everything, all the work

you put in all season and you swim your race and get a best time,” Yager said. “It’s the best feeling when your work pays off.”

Yager contributed to a pair of consolation final relays at the 2013 state meet at New Trier, completing the second legs of both the 200 medley relay (seventh) and 200 freestyle relay (10th).

She qualified individually in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke, but her preliminary times fell short of the consolation finals cut – by 1.23 seconds in the IM and 2.21 seconds in the breaststroke.

Freshmen have excelled at state meets before, but the legacy of Yager’s state debut amounted to something closer to osmosis. She embraced the experience and used it as fuel for training for National Club Swimming Association events during the high school offseason.

“It was just seeing how they went so fast in prelims and that all they wanted to do was go fast to get back to Saturday.

And Saturday, everyone wanted to win,” Yager said. “So just the different mindset of it all. Seeing that within my teammates

really helped. And seeing how different it was from a normal NCSA meet.”

Improving in a handful of events at the NCSA junior nationals n Marchin Orlando, Florida i and at summer nationals in August in Indianapolis, Yager built self-confidence while inspiring Rosary coach Bill Schalz, who also works with Yager on his Academy Bullets club team.

“Great girl,” Schalz said. “Very humble and modest and quiet, but she’s just a great racer and a great trainer.”

Although Yager did not accomplish her preseason time goals in either the 200 IM or 100 breaststroke, her finishes more than sufficed.

In the IM, her winning time of 2:02.15 was nearly 1.5 seconds faster than her nearest competitor, Gaby Serniute of Downers Grove North. Later in the afternoon, Yager placed second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:04.17, just .48 seconds off the pace of champion Noelle Peplowski of Metamora.

Yager’s first chance to earn a medal – and a new room decoration – came when she helped the 200 free relay take eighth in a consolation final.

Glenbrook South’s quartet edged the Beads for the title, but it wasn’t as if Yager needed the extra adrenaline.

That was a long time coming.

Marmion’s Hoeft gains PP&K glory QUICK READ Kevin Druley Marmion sophomore Connor Hoeft knows a few things about the unsung aspects of football.

Throughout the season, Hoeft played center on the sophomore team’s offensive line before remaining on the field to serve as the varsity kicker and punter.

Three weeks after the Cadets were eliminated from the first round of the IHSA Class 6A playoffs, Hoeft delivered once more under pressure, winning the 14-15 boys age division of the Bears’ NFL Punt, Pass and Kick competition. Hoeft registered a 51-yard kickoff and 35-yard punt at the Bears’ indoor practice facility in Lake Forest before throwing a 47-yard pass at Soldier Field ahead of the team’s Nov. 23 game against Tampa Bay. “It seems like not many people get recognition for being a kicker and punter,” said Hoeft, of Sugar Grove, “but the time that I put into it and everything, I just love how you’re called upon to make big kicks. … I think it’s just so much fun.”

Hoeft averaged 43.1 yards a kickoff and 34 yards a punt for the Cadets this season while converting each of his 25 extra-point attempts. He also made field goals of 32,36, 29 and 30 yards.

Bigger than most of his kicking brethren at 6-foot-2 and 205 pounds, Hoeft has increased his distance in tandem with his growing frame.

He first took up the kicking game as a seventh-grader at Kaneland Harter Middle School but made it a more serious endeavor as high school approached. That experience fueled his confidence throughout the Punt, Pass and Kick progression, which included winning a local competition in DeKalb and a sectional at Rockford before going for the Bears’ team championship.

Hoeft was one of the final four athletes in his age group.

Bounces or rolls were not part of his score, so Soldier Field’s notoriously shoddy surface did not play a factor.

“Oh, it was great,” Hoeft said. “They have a beautiful indoor facility. It was definitely awesome. It was so great to see where all these guys work out and train. … And then to show up on game day, to be there to see them and the Bucs, that was awesome.”

As a kicker and punter, Hoeft should be accustomed to his next course of action: waiting. By month’s end, he’ll learn whether his score registered

in the top four in his age group among all winners in the 32team NFL, a distinction that would send him to the national finals in January at the site of a playoff game.

Calcagno offers recruiting thoughts: St. Francis defensive end Quinn Calcagno is coming close to empathizing with opposing quarterbacks.

If not the pressure of a pass rush, the senior certainly has felt the recruiting heat in the days since the Spartans’ season ended with a loss to eventual Class 6A state champion Nazareth Academy in a state semifinal.

here, an email,” said Calcagno, a St. Charles resident. “But now that football’s over, you’ll get like, five calls at once. It’s kind of overwhelming.”

Calcagno caught coaches’ attention with a standout season that included 8½ sacks and a nod as the Chicago Catholic Green Defensive Player of the Year. He also contributed to the Spartans’ offensive line rotation, but said most college interest involved him as a defender.

Calcagno has offers from Miami (Ohio) and Southern Illinois-Carbondale and has been in frequent contact with North Dakota State. He also is receiving overtures

from a handful of Ivy League programs, including Brown, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard and Yale.

He’s set to visit Cornell later this month.

Acknowledging “I’m really good with numbers,” Calcagno plans to study something within the business or finance discipline.

He carries a 3.88 grade-point average on a 4.0 scale, he said, and scored a 27 on his ACT.

AURORA – A strong fourth quarter pushed the Aurora Christian girls basketball team past St. Francis, 51-37, on Monday.

Junior guard Kirsten Madsen led the way for the Eagles, converting on two 3-pointers in the third quarter and finishing with 19 points after recording five heading into halftime.

Natasha Brown finished one point shy of a double-double,

logging nine points and grabbing 16 rebounds for the Eagles (6-1).

The senior center now has more than 100 rebounds on the season in seven games.

“Prayer and determination have been key,” Brown said.

The Eagles were exploited by the Spartans help defense in the first half, but Madsen found open lanes and facilitated the play on offense.

“Really, I just looked at what the defense was giving us,” Madsen said. “We started

to take advantage of the opportunities they were giving us.”

Saint Francis led, 10-8, after the first quarter and extended the lead to 18-13 in the second after junior forward Reagan Sproat made a shot from the low post.

But Aurora Christian took advantage of some missed opportunities late in the quarter to erase the deficit altogether.

Sami Hultine hit a 3-pointer in the final minute of the second quarter to give the Eagles a 21-19 lead going into halftime.

NFL’s 2nd-ranked rushing attack visits Soldier Field

By ARTHUR ARKUSH aarkush@shawmedia.com LAKE FOREST – In four games since Marc Trestman during the bye listed achieving better offensive balance as one “clear indication of what the Bears must do better” in the second half of the season, the run-pass ratio has been 89:158, culminating with only seven rushing attempts on Thanksgiving Day, the fewest in franchise history.

Three of those games were within one possession in the second half.

The Bears’ sputtering offense enters a meeting with the Cowboys ranked 26th in rushing, averaging 4.0 yards a carry. Only three teams in the league have attempted fewer runs than the Bears’ 277 (23.1 a game).

In Jason Garrett’s first three full seasons in control in Dallas, his offenses ranked 24th, 31st and 31st in rushing attempts.

But, in a stunning transformation in 2014, the Cowboys visit Soldier Field with an 8-4 record and the NFL’s No. 2 ground attack led by runaway rushing champion DeMarco Murray, whose 288 attempts is 46 more than the league’s second busiest runner.

Trestman was asked for his impression of Dallas’ sea

change. “It’s had a big effect on Tony Romo,” said Trestman. “ … It’s helped their [play]-action.

He’s got a 100-plus rating, which is excellent. He’s throwing the ball less, which is helping this football team. I think that’s just the direction they decided to go, and it’s worked out. They’ve got more balance in their attack.”

The Cowboys’ revised approach protects not only Romo but their middling “D,” which permits nearly a touchdown less per game than the Bears.

Jay Cutler said all quarterbacks love slinging the football around, but even he knows the Bears’ unwillingness to run is a losing formula.

“You want to throw the ball. You want to throw touchdowns. You want to throw for big yards,” Cutler explained.

“But you definitely want to win football games and I think anyone who has been doing this for a while realizes that you’ve got to have the best of both worlds. … There’s no one out there who can drop back 40-50 times consistently and win football games.”

Yet in two of Cutler’s past three games, he’s dropped back at least 43 times.

The Cowboys are coming off their own Thanksgiving embarrassment, when Dallas surrendered a season-high 256 rushing yards in a 33-10 defeat to Philadelphia. It would appear to be a prime opportunity for The Bears to unleash their best offensive weapon, Matt Forte, who tied a career-low with five carries Thursday.

Taking the podium shortly after Bears offensive coordinator Aaron Kromer predicted his offense wouldn’t again abandon the run if it falls behind by 10 points in the second half, Trestman indicated he’s doing everything possible to correct the problem.

“I don’t think it has been the way we wanted it to be, but we’re still pushing for that.

We’re making every attempt to do that. This week gives us another opportunity to try to put it all together, and that’s what we’re focused on with this Dallas team.”

Tight hamstrings, gimpy left ankles, unable to play because of fatigue, table tennis tournaments, and then of course an attempted biting incident in Brooklyn, as Kevin Garnett tried attacking Joakim Noah’s hand as if it was a bucket of chum.

All that was missing was a clown car.

More importantly, however, it had a 4-3 winning record for the Bulls in what could have been a disastrous two weeks.

“You have to look at it in totality,” coach Tom Thibodeau said of the annual extended road trip. “There’s obviously a lot of good things we’re doing, but also some things we can improve on.

We don’t want to change our approach. If we’re doing the right things the rest will take care of itself.”

With an asterisk on staying healthy.

Players who missed games during the journey across the West Coast and back to the East included Derrick Rose (hamstring, fatigue), Kirk Hinrich (ribs), Taj Gibson (left ankle), Noah (left knee) and Pau Gasol (left calf).

Yet, they return home with only Gibson still on the shelf.

They can thank their depth partially for that, but enough can’t be said about Jimmy Butler and his emergence as an elite two-guard throughout the NBA. In past 10 games, Butler has averaged 23.1 points a

game, 5.5 rebounds, 1.4 steals, has locked down the opponents’ best scorer, while putting in 39.7 minutes a game.

“We hold him accountable,” Rose said of the new expectations now on Butler nightly. “We know how hard he works. He wants to play that way. However he wants to do it, whether it’s jump shots or driving to the lane or getting in the post, we’re going to find a way.”

Although Butler seems to have snuck up on the rest of the league, Rose also said he wasn’t surprised by his emergence.

“Nah, I know how good he is and how hard he’s been preparing for this,” Rose said.

“He has prepared for this since the offseason. It’s just paying off for him right now.”

While Butler remained the driving force behind the success this season, Rose remained the focus. The trip couldn’t have started off any worse for the point guard, sidelined with a left hamstring the first three games, playing in Utah, but then tapping out the second half of the game in Denver because of “fatigue.”

To Rose’s credit, he came back in Boston and then Brooklyn, played well, and for the first time this season finished back-to-back games on the schedule.

Baby steps, but steps.

“To me, it’s moving in the right direction,” Thibodeau said of Rose. “When you string some games together, you practice well, practices hard, he’s going to play well.

It’s really that simple. And it’s time to go.”

Is an old barber pole or carved cigar store Indian worth as much as an oil painting of the same age?

Some collectors today think so. One bidder paid $42,550 for a well-documented Indian maiden cigar store figure at a 2014 antiques auction.

The hand-carved figure was pictured in the 1970s book, “Treasury of American Design,” which discusses a 1935 WPA project. Jobs were scarce during the Depression and the project gave jobs to artists who created watercolors of important American folk art. These original pictures can be viewed at the National Gallery of Art. You can see them online at www.nga.gov (search for “Index of American Design”).

The wooden Indian was the accepted sign in front of a tobacco shop by the 1840s, but it was almost gone by 1900, replaced by flat signs with store names. The term “cigar store Indian” today includes all the wooden or metal figures used as store signs in the past. Most of them did represent American Indians and were dressed in traditional feathers and robes. Many held tobacco leaves. The record price for a Santa Claus figure, set at Sotheby’s in January 2014, is $875,000.

The Santa Claus figure was made in 1926 by Samuel A. Robb, who also carved American Indians. Even if a figure is a clown, dandy, Turk, soldier, young girl, Chinese man, Scotsman, Santa Claus or anyone else, all are referred to as “cigar store Indians.”

Q: I was given a platter with a painted turkey in the center and a pink and green flower border. The platter is round, 2 inches high and

15 1/2 inches in diameter. It’s marked with a green backstamp that reads “The Cowell & Hubbard Co., Cleveland, O” inside a shieldshaped cartouche. Can you tell me more about my platter and what it’s worth?

A: Your turkey platter was sold

by Cowell & Hubbard, but it wasn’t made by that company. The Cowell & Hubbard Co. was founded in Cleveland in 1861 and was once Cleveland’s oldest and most prestigious jewelry store. It sold a variety of luxury goods - jewelry, fine silver, china dishes, cut glass, clocks, lamps and engraved stationery.

Cowell & Hubbard contracted with some of the best American and European ceramics manufacturers, such as Lenox in the United States; Haviland and Ahrenfeldt in Limoges, France; Cauldon, Minton, Wedgwood and Royal Worcester in England; and Rosenthal of Germany to buy dinnerware and decorative items that were sold exclusively by the store. Factories often printed the names or marks of retailers as part of a backstamp with and without the maker’s own mark. It’s not clear who made your platter, but it was probably made in the 1930s and is worth about $75 to $100, thanks to the turkey and every family’s need for a Thanksgiving platter. *** Q: We have a copy of the Nov. 23, 1936, issue of Life magazine.

A: Your two-piece bedroom set was made by Franklin Shockey Co. of Lexington, N.C. The furniture company opened in 1941 and appears to have operated into the early 1960s. Shockey made a line of midcentury modern pine furniture that collectors hunt for today. If your set is in the mid-century modern style and in good condition, you might get as much as $1,000. *** Q: My husband and I knew the sculptor Edward Marshall Boehm and his wife when he was studying porcelain manufacturing in the 1950s. His earliest figurines were dogs and farm animals, made before he began creating the beautiful birds for which he became famous.

I have a black and white Boehm cocker spaniel. What is it worth?

A: Edward Marshall Boehm (1913-1969) was a veterinarian’s assistant from 1945 until 1949.

He made most of his dog figures between 1949 and the late 1950s.

He opened a porcelain studio in his home in Trenton, N.J., in 1950 and began experimenting with different glazes. His wife, Helen, promoted the business and marketed the figurines. Boehm made cocker spaniels in several colors and in two sizes.

My first reaction is to wonder if there has been parental alienation happening. My second is to suggest that you enlist the help of a licensed family therapist to find out why Stella acts this way every time she’s alone with you. If the problem is that she is immature, ride things out.

Hormone therapy can increase heart risk in women over 60 Dear Doctor K: I’m 68 years old and have been on low-dose estrogen therapy since I had a hysterectomy (and started menopause) at age 50. My doctor won’t prescribe it anymore because he says it increases my risk of heart problems.

Is that true?

Dear Reader: The effect of hormone therapy on the heart is a controversial area. Hormone therapy usually involves “combination therapy,” with both estrogens (the main female hormones) and progestins (other important female hormones). Estrogen helps reduce symptoms of menopause, such as hot flashes. Progestin reduces the risk of cancer of the uterus.

In my opinion, combination therapy or estrogen therapy alone probably reduces the risk of heart disease among women entering menopause, and for five to 10 years thereafter. But then, about 10 years after menopause, combination hormone therapy begins to increase the risk of heart disease.

So, your doctor has reason to be concerned.

How could it be that hormone therapy protects against heart disease in younger menopausal women, but increases the risk of heart disease in older menopausal women? Why should age matter? It

The most common type of heart disease is atherosclerosis of the arteries that supply blood to the heart. Atherosclerosis causes cholesterol-filled “plaques” in the walls of the arteries. As these plaques grow, they can block the flow of blood through the arteries.

When blood flow to a part of the heart muscle stops, the muscle dies. That’s what happens in a heart attack.

Some heart attacks are caused by plaques that slowly grow and finally become so large that they shut off the blood supply to a part of the heart. However, more heart attacks are caused by smaller plaques. These plaques are not large enough to block blood flow very much.

But each plaque has a cap of fibers that holds in the plaque’s pool of cholesterol. In some plaques, called “vulnerable plaques,” inflammation inside the plaque eats away at the fibrous cap. Suddenly, the fibers rupture, cholesterol

spills into the artery, a blood clot forms – and blood flow to a part of the heart stops.

Estrogen slows the development of plaques. By the time a woman reaches menopause, her own natural estrogen has helped protect her against developing plaques. The estrogen in hormone therapy continues to slow (but not stop) plaque development.

By 10 years after menopause, however, the average woman has vulnerable plaques that threaten to rupture. Estrogen increases inflammation inside the plaques, and it causes blood to clot more easily. So estrogen now increases the risk of heart attacks.

Most studies that show an increased risk of heart disease in women of your age involved the use of combination hormone therapy. You’re on just estrogen, and a low dose at that. Still, I think the safest assumption is that you are at a somewhat increased risk. You and your doctor have to balance the risk against any benefits you feel you get from estrogen.

Dr. Wallace: I’ve got a problem and need your advice. My girlfriend and I are both 14, and her parents will not allow us to date yet. So, we just decided to see each other at school as much as we can and stay “attached” until she is allowed to go out on dates.

My problem is that a very cute new student came to our school a couple of weeks ago, and she sits next to me in our geometry class. She’s a very intelligent girl, and all the guys rave about how beautiful she is. In today’s deal, South is in three no-trump. West leads the spade queen. How should declarer continue?

South has seven top tricks: two spades, three hearts and two clubs.

He could establish three diamond winners, but he does not have the time to work on that suit. He will lose two diamonds and three spades.

Instead, declarer must hope that he can take four club tricks.

But how should he play that suit?

If the five missing cards are dividing 3-2, as they rate to do, everything works. But what if they are 4-1?

There is only one winning position: East must have a singleton eight or nine. So, South should take the first trick with his spade ace and lead the club 10. If West plays low, declarer runs the 10. If it loses, he needs a 3-2 split. Here, though, if West does not cover the 10, South will take the trick and cruise home.

AN ORDINANCE providing for, and approving the budget for the calendar year 2015 * * * WHEREAS, the Board of Trustees (the "Board of Trustees") of the Mill Creek Water Reclamation District (the "District") has determined that, in connection with the operation of its water supply and wastewater facilities (the "Systems"), it is necessary and in the best interests of the District to establish a budget with respect to the operation and maintenance of the Systems and related items for the year 2015; and WHEREAS, the Board of Trustees reviewed and approved the proposed 2015 budget in the form attached hereto as Exhibit "A" (the "Budget"), which Budget estimates the revenues and expenses of the District for the calendar year 2015.

NOW, THEREFORE, Be It Ordained by the Board of Trustees of the Mill Creek Water Reclamation District, Kane County, Illinois, as follows: Section 1. Incorporation of Preambles. The Board of Trustees hereby finds that all of the recitals contained in the preambles to this Ordinance are true and correct and do hereby incorporate them into this Ordinance by this reference.

Section 2. Determination to Adopt Budget for 2015. It is necessary and in the best interests of the District, that the District adopt the attached Budget covering projected revenues, costs, expenses and capital expenditures, including operating and maintenance costs. The Budget contains an estimate of the revenues and expenses of the District for the calendar year 2015. Such Budget for 2015 is hereby approved and shall constitute the budget for the District for said year. The sums set forth in the Budget are hereby appropriated and budgeted for the corporate purposes of the District for the calendar year 2015.

Section 3. 2015 Budget Items. The Budget for 2015 has been prepared in conjunction with the District's operator, and has been reviewed by the Board of Trustees. The Board of Trustees has provided for the collection of real estate taxes levied against all taxable property with the territorial limits of the District in an amount set forth in the Budget and shall take such action as necessary to implement such tax levy. The District is authorized to make such payments or reimbursements or take such other action as is generally contemplated by the Budget without further action of or by the Board of Trustees. It is expressly and specifically agreed that the Trustees of the District shall have authority (and are hereby granted such authority) to sign checks or take other appropriate action to make payments, disbursements, or reimbursements of expenses in substantial accordance with the Budget. Any and all excess revenues or any savings in Budget items may be expended in making up any insufficiency in any other item or items in the Budget and for the general corporate purposes of the District.

Section 4. Severability. If any section, paragraph, clause or provision of this Ordinance shall be held invalid, the invalidity of such section, paragraph, clause or provisions shall not affect any of the other provisions of this Ordinance.

Section 5. Repealer. All ordinances, resolutions or orders, or parts thereof, in conflict with the provision of this Ordinance are to the extent of such conflict hereby repealed.
