Celebrating 10 years with Shaw Media This month, Kane County Chronicle photo editor Sandy Bressner and I are celebrating 10 years of working for Shaw Media, the company that owns the Chronicle.

Both Sandy and I started working for Shaw Media at the same time – after the weekly newspaper company that we previously worked for, Lakeland Media, was acquired by Shaw.

In celebration of our milestone work anniversaries, Sandy and I sat down for a Q-and-A interview with each other. An edited version of our conversation follows.

EDITOR’S NOTEBOOK Kathy Balcazar newspaper business during the past 10 years?

Bressner: Obviously a lot more toward digital and mobile and video. I think one of the best things I did as soon as joining Shaw was I participated in a video workshop at the University of Illinois, and I think that really, really helped my understanding of where newspapers were going. Kathy, what do you think has changed the most?

Balcazar: I think you’re right. I think it’s digital – making sure we’re constantly updating the website, putting information out on social media, using our breaking news text alert and email systems to get news out to readers faster. That’s markedly different from when I started in journalism ... . Sandy, any certain types of photos that stand out to you from the past decade?

Bressner: Oh, my gosh.

professional sports in Chicago. The Bulls’ playoff games against the Miami Heat four years ago were probably a huge highlight. But, at the same time, I relish all the local sports and the local stories that we get to do, as much – if not more – because those kids are putting their heart and soul into everything that they do. ... Did you ever think you’d be the editor of the Kane County Chronicle when you started at Shaw?

Balcazar: I would not have guessed that I would be in this position at this point in my life. My goal coming out of college was to work at a weekly or a daily. Once I got to Lakeland Media, at the weeklies, I wanted to work for a daily. The first daily I worked at was the Northwest Herald (also owned by Shaw Media), and I was very lucky to then get an opportunity to be the managing editor of the Lake County weeklies and that prepared me for this job ... . What has kept you in this business?

Bressner: People. The people I meet every day, absolutely. And the people who are part of the communities

we cover, it’s just amazing.

No one will ever believe that I was shy ever, and that I still consider myself shy and I still have to give myself a little pep talk every time I talk to a stranger, but I’m always glad I did. And what about you? What do you think is the thing that you’ll take from the past 10 years?

Balcazar: I’m real fortunate to have a job that does make a difference to the community members who our paper serves. And I think at the end of the day that’s a major reason why I’m still in this business and a major reason I got into it because I wanted to do something that would make a difference. Community journalism is something that I think will be around for a really long time, no matter what changes take place in the newspaper industry.

Cuts planned for next year instead of referendum

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com The Fox River and Countryside Fire/Rescue District Board has taken steps to cut the district’s expenses without going to referendum at this time.

The board of trustees present at a Monday meeting voted, 3-0, in favor of terminating the district’s agreement with Public Safety Systems Inc., its provider of firefighter and rescue personnel.

Trustee John Gamboa was absent, as he was helping to investigate the death of Chicago firefighter Daniel Capuano, board President Bob Handley said. Most of the personnel employed under Public Safety Systems have indicated they are willing to

remain with the district on a part-time basis, Handley said.

Carl DeLeo, the district’s fire chief, will organize the staffing to ensure there are firefighters available for all shifts, Handley said.

The district will continue to refine the new staffing model during the next 90 days, which serves as a transition period until the agree-

ment officially ends.

There are other fire districts in northern Illinois that use a part-time staffing model, including those in Pingree Grove and McHenry, Handley said.

“There’s certainly going to be savings, which we need,” Handley said in an interview on Wednesday.

The trustees looked to cut operational costs after they figured district voters would not approve a referendum during the March 2016 general primary to increase the current district tax rate.

The district began to take steps toward a referendum for the primary even after voters defeated its previous rate hike request by a 3-to-1 margin in April, according to election records.

The district expects to save between $200,000 to $300,000 by ending the current agreement, Handley said. Former board president and trustee Jim Gaffney is not fully convinced the district will realize the savings they projected.

COVER STORY DEVELOPING LEADERS Fourth-graders start on path with Project KC in Kaneland

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – It has been a little more than two years since Renee Dee helped create a movement to fight the effects of bullying in Kaneland School District 302 by spreading kindness.

The Kindness Campaign, P.E.A.K. for Kids and Project KC helped build the awareness. Since then, the Kaneland district has added Project KC as an after-school program for fourth- and fifth-graders, though Dee no longer is involved. It’s something she described as “bittersweet.”

At the fourth- and fifthgrade level, Kaneland offers Project KC, with a focus on peer leadership. It helps lead into a middle school effort, Operation Snowflake, described as a group that “focuses on attitude, feelings and personal growth.” Sarah Mumm, the district’s director of educational services for those in kindergarten through fifth grade, said the district has “really established some good community partnerships, especially with Renee, and expanded our resources.”

Project KC meets once a month at three of the district’s elementary schools – Blackberry Creek, McDole and Shields.

“It’s a lot of problem-solving skills, more or less,” Christiansen said, adding that acquiring such knowledge can help students who find themselves in a situation when they are bullied, or if they see someone being bullied.

Mumm said fourth grade is an ideal starting point because many social issues start to

emerge during that age group.

“The ideal long-term goal is to see this be a continuum,” Mumm said, adding that students can go through Project KC, then work through Snowflake and ultimately Operation Snowball, which is a group focused on leadership development that aims to prevent alcohol and drug use.

Dee said she is “happier than happy” that Project KC can play a role to help that.

“We made a difference,” Dee said. “We formed a support system. All we needed in Kaneland was the freedom of communication and creativity. … We created that freedom, and one of those freedoms is Project KC, in my opinion.”

The new main building will feature a much larger area. Ream said it will be about three times bigger than the current location. With the second building, there will be more room for meat processing, for sausage making and for the smoke house. The new market also will feature a liquor license.

As far as the existing location, Ream said there are some possibilities. Also, the Reams still will own the parking lot that sits on the northeast portion of Elburn’s downtown area.

“The kitchen is still here,” Ream said of the current location. “I don’t know. I would like to do a restaurant. … We don’t know yet. We’re going to do something.”

Bernice was born June 1, 1916, in Batavia, IL. She was the daughter of Henry and Selma (Johnson) Wenberg. She was a member of

the Mission Covenant Church now the Evangelical Covenant Church, in Batavia her entire life. Bernice was a gifted musician who played the pipe organ and piano at the Mission Covenant Church for many years. She worked at the Alexander Lumber Company of Batavia as a secretary and bookkeeper. Following the closing of Alexander Lumber Company she worked for Avenue Motors of Batavia as receptionist and bookkeeper.

Bernice retired and lived at The

Holmstad. She enjoyed all the activities and especially the music concerts the Holmstad had for their residents. She enjoyed old friends and met many new residents that became good friends over the years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters, Louise (Wenberg) Malstrom, Miriam and Marguerite Wenberg; and her brothers, Harold and Roger Wenberg.

ST. CHARLES – Another special St. Charles District 303 school board meeting has been scheduled on the facilities options.

The meeting is set for 6 p.m.

Jan. 4 at the Thompson Middle School Library, 705 W. Main St., St. Charles, according to a news release.

The primary purpose of the meeting is for board members to discuss the four facilities options proposed by district officials, the release states.

Citizen comments will be limited to three minutes per speaker for a total of 30 minutes at the Jan. 4 meeting, according to the release.

The complete agenda for this meeting will be posted in accordance with the Open Meetings Act in the days leading up to the meeting, the release states. There will be no action taken on the facilities options at the meeting, according to the release.

District officials have asked the school board to make a decision on the facilities options at its regular monthly meeting scheduled for 7 p.m. Jan. 11 at Wredling Middle School cafeteria, 1200 Dunham Road, St. Charles, the release states.

Superintendent Don Schlomann presented the options in a series of 15 meetings, which began in October. According to the release, the options seek to capture opportunities for operating efficiencies based on declining student enrollment.

Enrollment is 12,500 students, down from a peak of 13,900 in 2008-09, the release states.

The options are as follows: • Maintain status quo – This has no cost savings and does not address middle school issues such as lack of air conditioning, needs in science labs and small food services areas.

• Close Lincoln and Wasco elementary schools – This

would save $1.7 million annually, elementary schools would remain kindergarten to fifth grade, and it does not address middle school issues.

• Close Haines Middle School – This would save $2.8 million annually, elementary schools would become kindergarten to sixth grade, and there would be a $20 million renovation to Thompson Middle School, no referendum necessary.

• Close Lincoln, Wasco and Haines – This would save $4.5 million annually, elementary schools remain kindergarten to fifth grade and include a $45 million renovation to Thompson Middle School, which would require a referendum.

Geneva man faces felony charges

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A Geneva man was charged with growing and selling marijuana, as well as felony criminal sexual abuse of a woman he knew, court and police records show.

Jose M. Delatorre, 35, of the 300 block of North First Street, Geneva, was charged Sunday with felony manufacture/delivery and possession of more than 30 grams, but less than 500 grams of marijuana, court records show. He also w a s c h a r g e d Jose M. with two counts Delatorre of domestic battery and possession of not more than five marijuana plants, all misdemeanors.

According to police reports, a woman he knew told police she observed a “grow operation” in the basement. Police also observed a water filtration system, vent and lighting consistent with growing marijuana, according to police reports.

The woman also directed police to a mason jar on the kitchen counter containing

marijuana packed in plastic bags, along with rubber gloves, small shears and a digital scale, according to police reports.

The woman had located these items in a shoebox lid on the top shelf of Delatorre’s closet, according to police reports. After police secured the home and waited for a search warrant, Delatorre arrived and was arrested, according to police reports.

The woman called police to tell them that after they executed the search warrant, Delatorre waited for her after work, threatened her, grabbed her arm and pulled her to his vehicle, bruising her arm, resulting in domestic battery and criminal sexual abuse charges, court and police records show.

The drug-related felonies are punishable by two to five years in prison and fines of up to $25,000. The felony criminal sexual abuse charges are punishable by one to three years in prison and fines of up to $25,000.

Delatorre was released after posting $2,500 bond, 10 percent of the $25,000 bail that was set, court records show. He is scheduled to appear in court Jan. 7.

And to all a good night … crawler Have you ever had one of those moments that was so unexpected, so incongruous, that you had a hard time believing it really happened?

I did, just last weekend.

You may remember those recent days, when temperatures topped out in the 60s.

That in itself was notable – it was, after all, almost mid-December. But when the rain started to fall on Sunday, the scene progressed from unusual to absolutely uncanny.

I’d spent the day doing housework and errands, and had anticipated a quiet evening of folding laundry. But then the phone rang. It was my friend Tricia calling, and with excitement in her voice she delivered her one-word message: “Worms!”

If you’ve been to Hickory Knolls before, you know that we have quite a number of live animals—our education “team,” so to speak. Several of these critters consume a diet heavy on invertebrates, including insects and, yes, worms.

Over the years we’ve found that bait shop nightcrawlers are not only expensive, but also of varying quality. Besides, I don’t know if you’ve noticed the way we have, but bait shops themselves are today much harder to find than they once were.

At any rate, when you get a magical combination of weather that is not only warm, but also wet, it means easy pickin’s – at least as far as worms are concerned.

Tricia and I hastily made a plan to head to Davis Park, where worms crowd the paved paths like holiday travelers clog O’Hare. And almost for the same reason …

When our airports fill up at Thanksgiving and Christmas, it’s because people have a specific destination in mind. They’re heading out to see friends and/or family, and given the distance they need to cover and the time in which they need to complete it, air travel make the most sense.

Earthworms and Christmas lights? Normally these two phenomena don’t occur at the same time. But our recent warm weather caused an incongruous confluence.

Finally, some scientists assert that worms emerging during rains are reacting to the vibrations they sense when the raindrops hit the ground. It has been shown that earthworms will crawl up and out of the way when they perceive the movement of a nearby predator, like a mole. Rain may create similar vibrations and result in similar movements. (Ever hear of “drumming” for

worms? It operates on the same principle. Rubbing a ribbed piece of wood against a stake in the ground produces tiny tremors, resulting in worms vacating their burrows to escape what they feel might be danger.)

16 Geneva officer injured after Batavia man resists arrest

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A Batavia man was charged with felony obstruction of a police officer, which resulted in the officer’s hand being injured, according to police reports.

Matthew J. Fligelman, 32, of the 300 block of North Batavia Avenue, Batavia, was charged Dec. 10 after police were called to a fight in progress about 11:30 Matthew J. p.m. in the 100 Fligelman block of West State Street, Geneva, according to police reports.

Fligelman was seen walking away, and despite police calling for him to stop three times, he ignored them and kept walking, according to the report. The officer intercepted him at the northwest corner of West State and First streets and saw that his nose was injured and a cut near his nose was bleeding, the report states.

Fligelman began a profane tirade and became increasingly

belligerent towards the officer, the report states.

Based on Fligelman’s behavior, the officer believed him to be drunk and went to arrest him for public intoxication, but Fligelman continued to resist, and when officers searched him on his left side, he attempted to pull away. When an officer pulled Fligelman back toward him, they both fell on the sidewalk.

Later, two officers tried to put him in their squad car, but Fligelman continued to resist.

A third officer opened the opposite side of the police car and pulled Fligelman across the seat so his legs were all in, which resulted in the officer’s right hand getting cut and bleeding, according to the report.

Fligelman also was charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana and received a local ordinance ticket for public intoxication. The felony charge carries a penalty of one to three years in prison and fines of up to $25,000.

Fligelman was released after posting $750 bail, or 10 percent of a $7,500 bond that was set. He is to appear in court Jan. 6.

District 1 – which includes Kane, DeKalb, Lake and McHenry counties – will be represented by Michele Aavang of McHenry County.

Meanwhile, District 5 – which includes Cook, DuPage, Grundy, Kendall and Will counties – will be represented

by Tamara Halterman of rural Mazon.

“I think it’s important for a woman to be on the board because women are just as involved in farming operations as men are,” Halterman said. “It’s time we have a woman on the board.”

Halterman comes from a family of farmers. She was raised on her parents’ farm just up the road from where she and her husband, Kevin, and sons, Sam and Luke, live.

She farms corn and soybeans, and raises cattle, noting

she says she can bring a different perspective to the board and have an opportunity to reach consumers on a different level.

“A suburban mom is more apt to listen to me because I can speak to them as a woman and a mom,” Halterman said.

She was elected during the Illinois Farm Bureau annual meeting in Chicago.

Two other new faces were elected to the board, as well. Jeff Kirwan of Mercer County was elected to represent District 3, which includes Whiteside, Rock Island, Mercer and Henry counties. And Troy Uphoff of Shelby County was elected to represent District 11, which includes DeWitt, Macon, Piatt, Moutrie, Christian and Shelby counties.

According to an Illinois Farm Bureau news release, the Illinois Farm Bureau is a member of the American Farm Bureau Federation, a national organization of farmers and ranchers. It has a total membership of more than 400,000 and a voting membership of more than 82,000.

Evan is a senior guard on the St Charles East basketball team. Evan led the Saints to a 3-1 record at the the STCE Ron Johnson Thanksgiving Basketball Tournament where he was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Bennett averaged 20 points a game and was named all-tournament in the Crystal Lake Central Thanksgiving tournament helping the Vikings to a tournament championship and a 4-0 start to the season.

As a captain of the girls swim team, Myanna qualified for the IHSA State Meet for the third year in a row. This year she made the All-State Team, placed 10th in the 200 Freestyle, and 6th in the 100 Butterfly. She also took down her old record in the 100 Butterfly this year.

Myanna is an outstanding student and building leader and has a great work ethic.

Dylan, a Junior on the boys bowling team, continues to be a leader. He recently finished 10th individually, averaging 222 for 6 games, in the 48 team Plainfield North Tournament on November 21st.

Ryan Fitzgerald helped the Rockets capture the Leland G. Strombom Thanksgiving tournament at Sycamore.

Central went 4-0 to win the Championship, beating Sandwich, Dundee Crown, Sycamore, and Rockford Jefferson. Ryan Fitzgerald averaged 15 p.p.g and 8 r.p.g. In the championship game, Ryan had a double double which was his second of the tournament.

He also earned all tournament team honors.

Morgan Rosencrants helped St. Charles North get off to a stellar 3-0 start at the Pontiac Thanksgiving Tournament, averaging 15 points a game, 15 rebounds, and 15 steals.

Her consistent good play and hard work were the key to victories against LaSalle-Peru and Pontiac as she scored 20 and 19 points respectively. Morgan’s leadership has played just as big a part as her skills on the court, and is why she is the Stars Player of the Month.

Ryan, an all-tournament selection at Batavia’s annual Ken Peddy Windmill Classic Thanksgiving tournament, looks to lead the Knights with his poise, easing the team into the coach Joe Conroy era. Paced Friday’s home rout of Morris with 18 points.

Austin’s ‘Voice’ resonates nationally Jeffery Austin – of Haines Middle School and St. Charles North heritage and recently of Team Gwen Stefani – performed the song “Dancing on My Own” during his landmark journey on season nine of NBC’s “The Voice.”

Although that might have been true for the 2 minutes, 35 seconds Austin spent on stage covering the Robyn song, it hardly encapsulated the feelings of his ardent backers at home. Austin finished fourth in the national reality competition, whose finals aired Tuesday, but support hardly wavered as he advanced through the early rounds and subsequent knockout stages.

“I’m definitely still feeling the St. Charles love,” Austin, whose given surname is McClelland, recently told the Kane County Chronicle.

Why wouldn’t he? Ours is a community that long has hailed favorite sons and daughters through exploits great and small.

Austin’s rise seemed to maintain an even keel throughout.

The same man seen singing alongside Stefani on a duet of the Stevie Nicks/Don Henley song “Leather and Lace” Tuesday had a concert for Haines students this fall.

If the Chronicle had a collective “Voice” chair, we’d have turned it toward Austin long ago. Congrats to a lifelong member of Team St. Charles.

Eases escape, ‘Star Wars’ does There forever will be something about holding a newspaper in one’s hands, but it seems as if this item should be more interactive.

If only newsprint could crawl up a page in the tradition of “Star Wars” film openings.

Then again, perhaps some seminal experiences are best left indigenous to the multiplex.

Partying like it was 1977 – or 1980, 1983, 1999, 2002 or 2005, when the “Star Wars” saga’s other entries were released – movie-goers nationwide flocked to see the initial screenings of “Episode VII: The Force Awakens” Thursday and Friday. Expect more of the same throughout the holiday season and into the new year. Expect the sentiments of Geneva’s Joe Karpierz to channel the driving, uh, force for many to leave their homes.

“I just enjoy the spectacle of space movies,” Karpierz told the Kane County Chronicle before a screening Thursday at Randall 15 IMAX in Batavia. “[This] is going to bring a lot of memories back.”

Movies provide an escape until their running times expire.

“Star Wars” movies do one better, considering how they’re set in “a galaxy far, far away,” per the intro before the iconic screen crawl.

In the week before this installment’s release, we saw Darth Vader shooting the puck between periods of a Chicago Steel hockey game at Fox Valley Ice Arena. St. Charles North students sported Imperial stormtrooper masks as part of cheering-section theme night for a basketball game.

As “The Force Awakens” in theaters, imagination runs rampant in many points in between. May the latter power be with you always, no matter which movie you see.

How to run next GOP debate

By JENNIFER RUBIN The Washington Post On Tuesday night, CNN drew 18 million viewers for the main GOP presidential debate. As currently scheduled, the GOP will have debates on Jan. 14 and Jan. 28, with the Iowa caucuses to be held Feb 1.

Here are some suggestions to improve the discussion, sharpen the race and prepare the GOP electorate to make its final decision: 1. Only one debate.

There is no need for two in two weeks (each on a Fox station). We are approaching 2012-style debate overload.

If the Republican National Committee won’t do its job to control the number of debates, the candidates should collectively decide one is enough.

2. No undercard debate.

Everyone has had a chance to make his or her case over and over again. If by now they don’t have enough support to face the other leaders, they do not deserve airtime.

3. No national polls. It has

been ridiculous from the getgo to use these notoriously useless polls. The variation in methodology and the simple fact that we do not have a national primary weigh strongly in favor of ignoring them, especially as the gap grows between national polls and the state polls that matter.

4. Top five candidates.

Since candidates with no real shot refuse to get out of the race, the field is still large. If the point is to give the viewers the most informative debate among the people with a shot to win, the stage needs to shrink. Only then can there be prolonged interaction among the people in actual contention. Choosing candidates who are in the top five in either Iowa or New Hampshire will do this.

5. Get specific. “Destroy the Islamic State” is not a policy; it’s an aspiration. The moderators have a responsibility to zero in on what specifically the candidates intend to do and how they are going to accomplish it.

It’s not as though the candidates lack proposals on

entitlements, taxes, spending and health care. There has, however, been too little interest in getting the debate participants to defend their ideas and critique one another’s. (You have to go back months to recall a smidgen of a debate between Ben Carson and Donald Trump on the relative merits of a flat tax and a progressive tax code.)

6. No over-produced video openings. Enough said.

All that would give us a single debate within a week or so of the Iowa caucuses with Donald Trump, Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., Ben Carson, Jeb Bush, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Ohio Gov. John Kasich. ... Knowing things matters, as does the ability to convince skeptics of the rightness of your position. It’s time to get down to evaluating who can actually do the job of president.

“It is wrong to steal.” Tell them over and over. You will truly have a merry Christmas each year of your life if you teach your child or your neighbor’s child to be good. I remember well our neighbor, Mr. Weber, talking to kids in the neighborhood in his driveway. He lectured us on how important it is to be good. We all listened.

I am a senior citizen and still remember that man and his words of wisdom. He told us to feed our brains with goodness, not evil. Merry Christmas to Mr. Weber in heaven and everyone in Kane County.

‘HUGE WIN’ FOR ’DOGS Batavia tops Geneva for first time since 2012-13

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Canaan Coffey was a freshman the last time the Batavia boys basketball team beat Geneva.

Now a senior guard, Coffey did not let a poor shooting night affect his final shot of Friday’s contest. He drained a deep, go-ahead 3-pointer – with a foot on the volleyball line – with less than a minute to play to propel the Bulldogs to a 4843 victory over the Vikings.

Although Coffey was not on varsity during the last victory in the 2012-13 season, his brother, Micah, was, and Canaan Coffey was glad to get a win over the Vikings in his final time playing them at home.

“It’s a huge win for us,” Coffey said. “So many guys made plays that helped us get this win. It’s a great team win for us. We played hard for four quarters, and that’s what you have to do against a team like that. The work ethic was great, and I’m so proud of these guys.

“When you’re not hitting shots, you have to find ways to try and get in a rhythm. I missed a bunch, but I always have confidence to make the next one.”

Before knocking down what turned out to be the game-winning 3-pointer, Coffey was just 1 for 10 from the field in the Upstate Eight Conference River Division game.

Batavia coach Jim Nazos said a player like Coffey isn’t someone he expects to stop shooting because he’s having an off night, and if given space, is a player that he wants firing when he gets the chance.

“When shooters are open, they take the next shot,” Nazos said. “Whenever he has an open shot, he has the green light to shoot it. That last possession, the team as a whole did a really good job of not forcing anything. We were patient for a look and it found the hands of a guy that we trust with the ball in that situation.”

After the starter at his position, Michael Fee, got into foul trouble in the first half, Cheaney stepped in and made his presence felt immediately.

The junior forward knocked down three 3-pointers in the first half, scoring all 13 of his points before halftime to help keep Batavia in the game.

“He was big for us tonight.

He’s been building up to something like this,” Nazos said.

“You want to get a really good win against a really good team, well, you need a team effort. We really didn’t miss

a beat with Colin coming in and that’s what you need from guys off the bench.”

Senior Johnny Fitch joined Cheaney in double figures, and led Batavia in scoring with his 15 points.

If you told Geneva coach Phil Ralston that Coffey would be 1 for 10 before the last minute, or 2 of 11 for the whole game, he would have thought his team was walking away with its fifth straight victory over its Tri-Cities rival.

Ralston commended both Sean Chambers and Matt Johnston for their defensive effort on Coffey, but knows that against a player of his caliber, one mental lapse in a close game can make all the difference.

“We didn’t have it at the end there,” Ralston said. “If we had won this game, our MVPs were Chambers and Johnston. They did a phenomenal job guarding Coffey tonight. But it just shows that one mental error going under a screen shows you how good Coffey is.”

Geneva (7-2, 1-2) was playing its second game without senior leading scorer Bennett Fuzak, who Ralston said Tuesday was “out indefinitely” after an injury against Larkin last week.

But neither Ralston nor any Vikings player suited up was going to make that an excuse.

In fact, many of them probably felt they should have won after Chambers – playing his first game of the season after an

injury in Geneva’s final football game – teamed with Jordan Vedder and Dom Navigato to help Geneva to a 43-38 lead with 4:17 remaining.

After not scoring until the 3:58 mark of the fourth quarter, Batavia did not let Geneva score another point after that surge.

“Our resilience on defense really showed up,” Cheaney said. “In those last few minutes, we played very poised.

You could see that the pressure wasn’t flustering most of us. We made good decisions on offense and locked in on defense. We have beaten a couple good teams here and want to keep building on that.”

Vedder (11 points) and Navigato (10) led Geneva in scoring.

Vikings compile ‘great game’ in road rout

Both Upstate Eight Conference River Division contenders fuse athleticism with experience, creating a slick combo on the court.

Something sure gave when the teams met Friday. The Vikings blitzed the Bulldogs in a key second quarter, cruising to a 59-39 win.

“It was because of our teamwork,” Vikings sophomore guard Stephanie Hart said. “We were really confident when we came in and just played a great

game.”

Sparked by reserve sophomore guard Bri Borkowicz, Geneva (7-1, 3-0 UEC River) outscored Batavia, 26-10, in a tide-turning second quarter.

Borkowicz scored eight points in the first 1:14 of the quarter, capitalizing on her first varsity minutes of the season after missing the first four weeks with a hairline fracture in her kneecap.

She dazzled from long distance during the early stretch before showing another element to her game midway through the quarter, slashing to the basket for a layup and converting the subsequent free throw for a three-point play.

“I was really nervous before, but once I started playing,

my head was in the game,” Borkowicz said. “I just played.”

Bulldogs coach Kevin Jensen wished his team could attest to that last part.

The Batavia gym had just gone dim for boys player introductions when Jensen delivered a fitting assessment.

“I think I’d sum it up and say that the lights were a little bright for us tonight, you know,” he said.

Batavia (11-2, 3-1) trailed by 19 points at the half and 24 after three quarters. First-half shooting woes (7 for 25 overall, 0 for 7 from 3-point range) accumulated with the home team’s frustration.

Already in possession of a number of would-be signature wins – including a victo-

ry against traditional power Trinity at its own Thanksgiving tournament – the Bulldogs struggled to keep up. Geneva darted into passing lanes on defense and weaved through Batavia’s full-court pressure on the other end.

“Playing on the road at Trinity without friends and family and amped up because it’s our rival is different than it was tonight,” Jensen said. “And I think very quickly, we got our adrenaline so high and we never could recover and just kind of seemed gassed today.”

The Bulldogs still challenged their rivals until the end. Batavia cut the lead to 15 in the fourth quarter and had a chance to draw closer before senior Hannah Frazier

(19 points, 10 rebounds) was blocked from behind when she tried to convert steal into a layup.

Junior post Grace Loberg (eight points, 13 rebounds) nearly registered a double-double for the Vikings, who did most of their damage from the backcourt.

Margaret Whitley led the team with 13 points – including a 3 at the second-quarter buzzer – while Borkowicz (12) and Hart (eight) followed.

“I think that we all knew that this was going to be our first real test, and so we talked about that all week,” Geneva coach Sarah Meadows said.

“And so the girls responded. They put in the work this week, and it showed.”

ST. CHARLES – Talks about rebounding and showing patience on offense are starting to turn into action for the St. Charles East girls basketball team.

The Saints dominated on the boards and showed patience on offense in a convincing 53-14 victory over Streamwood in an Upstate Eight Conference River Division contest Friday night.

East outrebounded Streamwood, 27-18, and worked the ball inside for layups against

the Sabres’ zone defense. Ashley DiOrio led the Saints with nine rebounds.

“We’ve talked about rebounds, about not getting the job done, and we did that tonight,” Saints coach Lori Drumta said. “We’ve talked about being patient on offense, and I thought we were very patient on offense.”

Drumta said she and assistant coach James Hawkins also have talked to the squad about not settling for 3-point attempts when there are opportunities to work the ball inside for easier shot attempts.

In the latest edition of the Weekend Chit-chat, Uzumecki caught up with Chronicle sports reporter Chris Casey to talk about the atmosphere of the dual and picking up an important win. Here’s an

Talk about what you thought of the atmosphere Thursday night.

I think a lot of the underclassmen really felt a bit of pressure, but the more experienced guys kept a little more calm. I think that’s why some of the younger guys went for moves early that got them in trouble. It was that early adrenaline, but once everyone calmed down, they did a good job.

When you have some of that experience, being a senior, do you lend advice to some of the

Yeah, of course you always try. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t always help. But I’m here to help whenever any of the guys need me. Having been there before, and having

wrestled in a similar event like this last year, I think it’s important to be there and help the younger guys shake off those nerves. Once they do that, it’s just another meet and they wrestle how they are capable.

It seemed like the middle of your lineup really took control of the dual against Geneva.

A lot of our more experienced varsity guys are in the upper weights so that’s why we do so well once things get into that area. We feel that we have good chances to win when we’re either ahead or within reach when we get

to our most experienced wrestlers.

Picking up this win heading into the middle stretch of the UEC season, do you guys feel your confidence is where it needs to be at this point?

Yeah, I think a win like this helps us push forward through the rest of the season. It also shows us that we can match up with most teams in the area and our conference. At the beginning of the season, with the guys we have, we set out to be the team to beat in our conference and I think we are right there.

GENEVA – The Cougars will welcome their soon-to-be-announced 2016 field staff and organizational brass when the club hosts a “Meet the Diamondbacks” hot stove event at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark on Jan. 29.

Mindy and John Wessel of St. Charles hosted a holiday party this past weekend, and the guests, comprised mostly of their fellow Leafs Hockey Club families, had one simple requirement for attending: They were asked to bring an unwrapped toy or two for Toys for Tots of Kane County. This is the second year the Wessel family has hosted the event.

With more 100 guests, close to 200 toys were donated.

Oh, boy. If only Christmas trees could talk.

Forget about the nice hot-cocoa-and-holiday-tuneswhile-you-gather-’round-andhang-ornaments stuff. What about the back story, of how the thing came to be in your house in the first place? No small feat, right?

As for my family’s current tree, it occurred to me – at 9:30 the Saturday morning we got it, a mere three hours before Noah was due for his shift at Trader Joe’s – that we had barely enough time for the tree to be picked, plucked and purchased before he went to work. (The tree is an all-handson-deck project from which no one is exempt, in my house.)

He was scheduled to work the next day, too, but Holly, my elf, my gift-wrapper-extraordinaire-for-whom-I-am-eternally-grateful, who deserved a

reward, pined for a tree – and future weekends weren’t slated to be any freer – so the time was NOW. Off we went.

Thrilled at my cleverness, that I’d discovered, like a precious jewel, the one moment in December when we’d all be available to make the magic happen, I beamed as I backed my Subaru out of the driveway and we headed out of town toward our go-to tree lot. No manner of bickering or brooding could dim the sun that shined in my heart, delighted as I was with the knowledge that we’d have just enough time the next morning, too, before Noah reported back to work, to trim the tree together.

Oh, happy day!

But there were no trees at the tree-lot. Huh? This unwelcome discovery didn’t factor into my plans, and the clock was ticking. Plan B is

“Mom.” “Yes.” “I’ve got things to do, and – where are we GOING?” one of my teenagers asked as we passed another barn.

“West,” I replied, grinning and barely stifling an impulse to quote Horace Greeley (who – according to some reports – actually quoted John Babsone Lane Soule, when he popularized, “Go West, young man ...” but I digress). “We’re going West, further into the country, where the tree farms live,” I said all sing-songy, sounding

vaguely like a preschool teacher on drugs. Yes. Because I was feeling giddy. Because there had to be tree farms. Because this was my ONE AND ONLY MOMENT. I took a deep breath and tightened my grip on the wheel.

Suddenly it dawned on me where I’d find another tree lot. So I reassured my passengers that I was turning back toward home at the next light, prayed my vision wasn’t merely a figment of my addled imagination, and – halleluja!

– a few miles down the road there it was, glowing like the star of Bethlehem. Our magic moment was bound to happen, after all. Christmas was saved!

(Never mind the close call we had when we realized that we needed to stop on the way home for a new tree stand.)

into the house, which always reminds me of that year we considered heading in trunkfirst. Not a good game plan, lest you risk taking ALL the needles off. Yeah. And then there’s the year when we considered resorting to taking the kitchen door off the hinges altogether. I’m drawing a blank.

Did we? Didn’t we? Maybe it’s best I don’t remember.

All that matters is that we pulled it off, again. Tree. In. Stand. That’s what I’m talking about.

Oh – and yes, Noah did make it to work on time.

30 Relieve constipation with more fiber and exercise Dear Dr. K: There are

so many laxatives on the market. Which one should I take for my constipation?

Dear Reader: Anyone suffering from constipation should start by boosting fiber and fluid intake. That may do the trick, and you may not need a laxative. If you are age 50 years or younger, the target is 38 grams of fiber per day for men and 25 grams per day for women.

For men and women over 50, aim for 30 and 21 grams per day, respectively.

Whole-grain foods, brans, fruits and vegetables are good sources of fiber. When introducing fiber to your diet (or fiber supplements, as I discuss below), do so gradually.

Too much, too fast can cause gas, cramping and bloating.

Drink lots of water or other liquids. It’s important to get enough exercise, which also promotes regularity. The way I explain it to my patients is that when you exercise, you “joggle the stuff in your intestines around and loosen it up.” (I don’t believe that this has been scientifically established – perhaps because most scientists have better things to do.)

If these measures fail, laxatives can help ease the passage of stool through the bowel. Following is a list of different types of oral laxatives, along with a few examples of each.

They work in a variety of ways; you can see which type best fits your needs.

BULK-FORMING AGENTS: These fiber-based products take a day or so to work. They are very effective and safe to take indefinitely, every day.

Take them with plenty of liquid. The most widely used are: • wheat dextrin (Benefiber) • bran (in food and supplements) • calcium polycarbophil (FiberCon) • methylcellulose (Citrucel) • psyllium (Metamucil)

bine with feces to soften the consistency of stool: • Docusate (Colace, Surfak) is generally safe for long-term use.

• Mineral oil should not be used every day because it reduces absorption of fat-soluble vitamins.

OSMOTIC AGENTS promote secretion of water into the colon. They are reasonably safe, even for long-term use. The most widely used is polyethylene glycol (Miralax), which has been shown to help children with functional constipation.

SALINE LAXATIVES attract and retain water in the intestines. This increases pressure and release of stool. The most widely used are various preparations of magnesium (milk of magnesia, Epsom salt).

STIMULANT LAXATIVES

They’re best used for occasional constipation, not on a daily basis: • bisacodyl (Dulcolax, Correctol) • casanthranol (Peri-Colace) • cascara (Naturalax) • castor oil (Purge) • senna (Ex-Lax, Senokot)

CHLORIDE-CHANNEL AGONISTS cause additional fluid to be secreted into the intestine, making it easier to pass stool. This prescription medication • called lubiprostone (Amitiza) • is intended for adults with persistent severe constipation who have not responded to other therapies.

I’m 20 now and fully employed as a hairstylist and engaged to be married to a wonderful guy who loves me very much.

I was only 14 years old when my parents divorced.

My mother got custody of me only because my father didn’t want me, and it turned out that she didn’t want me, either.

A couple of months after the divorce, she took me to my grandparents’ house and never came back for me. I love my grandparents but they were unable to cope with a young teenager. They gave me a nice room of my own and plenty to eat, but there were no rules and I had no discipline at all.

I started hanging around with the wrong crowd and before long I was into booze, drugs, and, finally, sex. I stayed in school but my grades were pretty bad because I was too busy partying to study.

Finally, I ended up in the hospital from an overdose of drugs. This turned out to be the turning point in my life because I really thought I was going to die. I prayed that if God would spare my life, I would do all in my power to change my life for the better.

Thankfully, I lived and was released from the hospital on a Friday. On Sunday, I went

Dear Abby: I am an administrative assistant. Part of my job is to make the arrangements for our department Christmas party. Every year, we go out in a group of about 15 people. I no longer wish to attend these events. Group settings make me nervous.

In addition, we all have to buy gender-neutral gifts to exchange.

I have tried to talk with my boss about it, but he doesn’t seem to understand.

We have bi-monthly staff meetings, and after everyone is done with business, we always have discussion time for things other than work. Most of us have lunch together every day and talk then. We also have group birthday celebrations four times a year.

I get a sick feeling every time I think about going to this party, and then the headache of trying to choose a gift that won’t be made fun of. (I am not good at it.) Last year I called in sick so I wouldn’t have to attend. I have tried taking a personal day off, but then my boss gets mad at me.
