had the chance to photograph Amy Roloff last week as she volunteered at the Northern Illinois Food Bank in Geneva. Roloff is a mom of four and helps her family run their farm, Roloff Farms, in Oregon. Of course, she and her

family also star in the TLC reality show “Little People, Big World.”

The show is one of the only reality shows I still watch occasionally. I was so pleased to find that Amy is exactly the same in real life as she is on “reality” TV. She was funny

and seemed to have a great time working alongside several other area volunteers as they batched bags of cranberries and potatoes to be distributed to needy families.

She was just another volunteer for the day and was not at all the

“celebrity” in the group. As she hoisted a heavy bin of potatoes, some of the volunteers tried to help her and she just smiled – said she had it and said, “I’m a mom.”

Campton Hills’ administrator gets board support

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com CAMPTON HILLS – Campton Hills trustees voted this week to reinstate its village administrator’s computer access and to hire a second law firm to represent the board of trustees on legislative matters.

The board previously had voted this month to reinstate Village Administrator Jennifer Johnsen, to counter Village President Patsy Smith’s action placing Johnsen on paid leave Nov. 21.

Although Johnsen had returned to work, she did not

have her computer, and her access to the village’s network had been blocked, she said.

The board’s actions took place this week in a regular meeting, followed by a special meeting from 7:30 p.m. Tuesday to 2:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Smith objected, saying, “She is not even supposed to be at work.”

Julie Tappendorf, of Ancel Glink, the law firm trustees hired to advise them, said Johnsen’s suspension “was not lawful from the outset” because Johnsen’s employment contract gives discipline and termination authority to the

If the weather doesn’t cooperate, the farm’s large wheeled hay wagon can be pulled by a tractor.

Holiday sleigh ride sessions will be from 6 to 7 p.m., 7 to 8 p.m. and 8 to 9 p.m. Dec. 26, Dec. 27, Jan. 2 and Jan. 3.

Those ages 15 years and younger must be accompanied by a paying adult, which is $10 a person for residents, $15 for nonresidents.

At the end of the about halfhour ride, guests are invited to the farm’s kitchen for cookies and hot chocolate while Christmas songs from the era play from an actual 1920s-period working radio.

“This is not a public official; this is an employee approved by the Village Board,” Tappendorf said. “The president’s opinion is that she has unilateral authority, but in my opinion, Johnsen is a contract employee, and this gives it to the Village Board.”

Tappendorf said her legal opinion was that the board corrected Smith’s action by reinstating Johnsen at a previous meeting. But Smith did not allow Johnsen access to her computer and village email, which violated the board’s pre-

vious action, Tappendorf said.

“Even though she has been back at work, she did not have computer email or server or network access,” Tappendorf said. “When she was put on leave by the village president, all her computer passwords were changed, and her access was taken away. The board’s action directed the village president to restore her access.”

Johnsen was away from the Village Hall on Thursday, and she said she could not confirm that all her access was restored.

She said she was told her

computer was returned to her office.

Johnsen is the village’s first administrator, beginning her job Jan. 27. The village was incorporated in 2007.

As to the addition of Ancel Glink to advise the trustees, village attorney William Braithwaite said the law allows the board majority to have their own attorney for legislative matters.

“They wanted to bring forth some of these ordinances, which they did Tuesday night,” Braithwaite said.

“They can consult with the legislative attorney if they wish.”

‘Information highway’ has capacity to grow

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – For the last several years, Kane County has been working to build an “information highway” – a fiber optic network that officials hope to build upon.

It began as a concept in 2005 as a potentially costly investment since one mile could cost $100,000 to $150,000, Chief Information Officer Roger Fahnestock told the Administration Committee on Thursday.

With plans to lay 30 miles of fiber, he said, that would have meant a multi-million dollar price tag.

The county, however, reduced costs by building the network as an overlay of the traffic management system, he said.

Slides that accompanied his presentation indicated base construction costs were almost $766,000.

DuPage Tech Park, Interstate 90, Interstate 88 and NIUnet, a high-speed fiber optic network built by Northern Illinois University, Fahnestock said.

It is more cost-effective than the monthly fees a telecommunications company would charge, Fahnestock said. Additionally, it also provides greater capacity than what the county could lease, he said, noting that only a fraction of its capacity is being used.

County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen asked Fahnestock about what could cause the system to fail. Potential problems include construction crews cutting the fibers, puddling of water in vaults and freezing, which resulted in two repairs last winter, Fahnestock said.

He noted the system will

become more reliable as more redundancies are added, but the county does have a service contract to provide emergency repair services.

As for future plans, Fahnestock said, priorities include addressing public-private partnerships and looking at an east-west branch to serve communities west of Randall Road.

Committee Chairman Ron Ford, D-Aurora, suggested looking at ways to attract businesses, and therefore jobs, with the network.

DeKalb Police Sgt. Steve Lekkas said police conducted an extensive investigation that involved numerous ground, water and air searches. They have interviewed hundreds of people, followed up on hundreds of leads, and receive calls about the case, he said.

Lekkas said any attention on a case is positive because it keeps it fresh in the community.

“A lot of times you don’t know what could trigger somebody to make a call,” he said.

And although police still are following up on a lot of leads, Lekkas said they lack the information that would help to break the case wide open.

DeKALB – Almost eight years after Bradley Olsen disappeared, his mother hopes to shed light on his case with a segment in a TV program.

On Saturday, a 15-minute segment of “Crimestoppers” providing insight into the eight-year search will be featured at 11 p.m. on WPWR-TV, said Sue Olsen, Bradley’s mother.

“After eight years, every little piece, it’s like a monstrous

puzzle with all these little bitty pieces,” she said. “It might be that one piece in the corner that’s missing to make all the rest of it just match together even more.”

This fall, Olsen was approached by Lisette Guillen, executive producer and host for “Case Files Chicago,” who wanted to feature Bradley Olsen’s case in her program.

Sue Olsen said she instantly agreed, as she hoped the program would help to turn up new leads.

Since her son’s disappearance Jan. 19, 2007, Sue Olsen has been relentless in her efforts to find any information leading to his whereabouts.

The lottery is set for Jan. 12 to Jan. 21 for classes operating out of Fox Ridge, Ferson Creek and Norton Creek elementary schools.

A five-day-a-week, half-day, morning or afternoon preschool program will be offered at those schools for the 2015-16 school year. The program is open to 3to 5-year-olds who live within the district’s boundaries and

will be 3 by Sept. 1, 2015, and are not eligible for kindergarten.

Monthly tuition is $275, and a $100 annual nonrefundable registration and materials fee will be required at registration.

Tuition, registration and material fees are pending school board approval.

An enrollment lottery will be held because space is limited. Names will be drawn Jan. 22, and parents will be notified that day if their child was randomly selected. Those not chosen will be placed on a waiting list.

Geneva police increasing seat belt enforcement KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – Motorists traveling through Geneva over the holidays should make sure they are wearing their seat belts, as the Geneva Police Department is ramping up enforcement beginning today, according to a city news release.

The increased enforcement is planned through Jan. 4.

Additional patrols will take place at night, when seat belt use is at its lowest and when

impaired driving poses its biggest threat, the release stated.

A seat belt compliance check is set for Monday at one of the city’s major intersections.

State law mandates that everyone must wear a seat belt when traveling in a car, and Geneva officers are prepared to ticket violators.

BLOOMBERG NEWS Just after noon Wednesday, President Barack Obama stood behind a lectern in the Cabinet Room of the White House and announced the end of the Castro era.

His decision to normalize ties with Cuba, and loosen restrictions on travel and commerce is a bold and overdue change in course, closing one of the last wounds of the Cold War and promising to open up new relationships and economic opportunities throughout Latin America.

Cuba’s release of Alan Gross, a U.S. Agency for International Development contractor jailed for the past five years on trumped-up espionage charges, paved the way for Wednesday’s announcement, which officials had been working on since the spring. The United States also released three imprisoned Cuban intelligence agents for a U.S. spy held in Cuba for more than 20 years.

Cuba is still a repressive one-party dictatorship that supports other abusers and tyrants.

In that respect, the embargo the U.S. has kept in place for the past half-century cannot be said to have achieved its purpose.

Yet Cuba is also changing: The regime has long been more focused on survival than exporting revolution, and its people have more economic and political freedom now than ever before.

The initiatives the administration has announced will accelerate those changes for the better.

They will make it easier for Americans to travel to Cuba, for Cuban-Americans to send more money home to their families, and for Cubans to build homes, start their own farms and businesses, and plug into the Internet (which only five percent of the population now does).

Like the Castros and their most die-hard Cuban-American opponents, the embargo on Cuba is a relic that does more harm than good.

Obama has wisely used his executive authority to set the stage for its demise.

Now it’s Congress’s turn to finish the job and end the embargo once and for all.

Holiday season’s brightest illuminations “You remind me of someone,” our Maggiano’s waitress said to my wife, Tia. How did we get here? Let me fill you in.

Our family had just been to the “Illumination.” No, not a recounting of the moment I learned how babies were made.

Rather, the “Illumination” at Lisle’s Morton Arboretum, displaying trees in imaginative, prismatic variety. At one station, for example, a stand with three metal cones urges passersby to talk or screech into them. When my son, Jay, squawked birdcalls, a tree’s gangly branches changed hues.

“Colorful speech,” I joked.

“No one laughed, Dad,” my daughter, Molly, said.

The walk’s highlight (no pun intended) came with a Beethoven (or whomever) symphony synced to a forest of harmonized rainbow complexions, rivulets of streaming lights and flashes of diamond snowflakes.

Watching with others, ranging from babies in strollers to seniors in wheelchairs, I thought about the greatest gift Christmas, Hanukkah, or Kwanzaa bestows, bringing people together. And, if we’re lucky, offers marvelous, memorable scenarios.

On the way home, we stopped at Maggiano’s where, halfway through dinner, our waitress – call her Sally – thought Tia “someone

Hearing this before, I suggested, “Meryl Streep?”

“Yes! Meryl Streep!” Sally cried, thrilled.

“I don’t have her nose,” Tia pointed out (ha-ha), “but I wouldn’t mind being thin and rich.”

“For a hundred dollars,” I offered Sally, “we’ll take your picture with her.”

“That’s funny!” she laughed.

Later, holding up a gallery of Meryl photos Jay found on his iPhone, I told Sally, “Family pictures.”

“That’s funny!” she roared again.

We left a good tip. Meryl could afford it.

Next day, we shared Thanksgiving dinner with relatives. Everyone brought something: moist, buttery turkey; bacon-granulated mac and cheese; creamy bean, mushroom and crispy onion-topped casserole; sweet potato soufflé; lumpy garlic mashed potatoes.

When no longer stuffed, we desserted on homemade chocolate-raspberry pie; crisscross-crusted apple pie; pumpkin pie bites with gingersnap crust; and nutrich chocolate pecan pie. Assorted

ice creams and a bowl of whipped cream stood by in case our trans fats got lonely for their friend cholesterol.

And potables? All in the family.

Our nephew partnered in producing an Argentinian wine, Rule of Three, Malbec 2012. The dessert beer (yes, beer!) came from Begyle, a Chicago microbrew where a cousin works; Imperial Pajamas, a stout aged in bourbon barrels, hinted at bourbon, chocolate, vanilla and heaven.

Between bites, we feasted on delicious banter.

The following day, Black Friday, symbol of cutthroat sales and lines, another “It’s a Wonderful Life” thing occurred. Jay’s emailed Christmas list read: “Dear Santas, even though I have all I could ever want, a loving family, a warm house and a fishing pole or two, I could use ... ” The Beatles were right: You can’t buy me love – just like you can’t buy life’s most endearing moments. Times returning as reminiscences often arrive unheralded, like large, promising, doorstep packages from far-away relatives.

Here’s wishing everyone a holiday season illuminated with wonder-filled gifts.

aylor Williams is halfway home on her recovery from ACL surgery, but the Geneva junior already has been through the wringer.

A soccer and basketball athlete, Williams floundered emotionally after her identity as a top athlete temporarily faded once she tore her ACL playing soccer in August. Williams said her simmering angst remained mostly bottled up in the early weeks and months.

“I just kept everything inside to the point where I just snapped,” Williams said.

Finding more effective ways to address the struggles of recovering athletes like Williams – physical, psychological and emotional struggles – is the mission of Angels and Athletes, a new organization spearheaded by Ken Loebel, of Geneva, and Julie Williams, Taylor’s mother. Angels and Athletes staged a kick-off event Tuesday night in Geneva at which Loebel and several speakers outlined their preliminary vision for an expanded support network for injured athletes and their families.

To that end, Tuesday’s event at Old Towne Pub & Eatery in Geneva included NFL quarterback Chandler Harnish, who,

via Skype, delivered a presentation to the crowd of athletes, parents, coaches and supporters, in which he described overcoming medical adversity that threatened his college football career when he played at Northern Illinois.

sometimes as unfortunate as it is, an injury can help bring you closer together as well, especially if that kid takes a leadership role on the bench. If kids look up to them and they’re a leader, then that doesn’t change.”

Williams remains involved with the Vikings’ girls basketball team this winter, helping chart statistics on the bench.

Although maintaining her connection with teammates is appreciated, it’s no substitute for the thrill of competition that athletes have come to crave.

Ken Loebel said he’d like for Angels and Athletes to potentially facilitate a support group where injured athletes and/or family members can vent their feelings and concerns, a step that might be less stigmatized than going to a counselor or psychologist.

Julie Williams said it’s difficult for those who don’t have highly ambitious athletes in their families to recognize how a loss of identity occurs when they are sidelined for an extended period. Watching teammates succeed in their absence can prompt mixed feelings – and

accompanying guilt.

“This is how they have evolved to be the person that they are,” Julie Williams said.

“Just because you’re an athlete, not everything’s handed to you.

There’s a lot of work involved in being an athlete, and I think sometimes people get the wrong idea.”

Although Angels and Athletes’ chief organizers are Geneva parents, they intend to reach out to athletes throughout the Tri-Cities, and broaden their scope from there.

St. Charles East graduate TC Hull, now a freshman soccer player at Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, tore his ACL twice in succession, costing him his senior season with the Saints.

Hull said Angels and Athletes’ mission of strengthening the support network for injured athletes is “a perfect thing to do,” saying letters of support he received from former Saints goalkeeper Charlie Lyon, who went on to play at Marquette, helped counter his mental funk.

“I got a couple letters from him telling me to ‘Keep going, keep going,’ ” Hull said. “Differ-

ent stuff like that is what kept me motivated, from those kinds of players who I look up to.”

The name of the organization, “Angels and Athletes,” originated from what Ken Loebel described as his prayers to angels to trade his healthy knees for those of his ailing daughter, Michaela, who was reeling physically and emotionally to the extent she questioned whether she should abandon playing sports.

Ken Loebel wonders if something spiritual was at play considering his knees soon acted up while Michaela’s improved, but on a more tangible level, he emphasizes that anyone can be an injured athlete’s angel – a teammate, a coach or anyone who takes the time to lend support.

Michaela Loebel, now a college soccer player at Nebraska, eventually fended off her doubts and returned for the late stages of her senior basketball season.

“But I can tell you that on senior night … when it was all over, she gave me a hug that lasted about 7 minutes, and she was bawling, and I was probably bawling,” Ken Loebel said. “That was the first time she let it out.”

Although that refers to a recommended mindset for recovering athletes, it also applies to the new organization’s ambitions.

Some of Angels and Athletes’ plans already are established (such as monthly written correspondences expressing encouragement to recovering athletes and a work-in-progress website, angelsandathletes.org, to share recovery resources with athletes and their families).

Others (setting up a scholarship program for athletes who have fought through medical adversity, a possible book featuring athletes and coaches’ perspectives on the recovery process) need additional vetting before becoming reality.

If nothing else, Angels and Athletes intends to spread awareness to people in injured athletes’ lives that they can make a profound difference in smoothing the recovery process.

Geneva girls basketball coach Sarah Meadows’ program has dealt with several major injuries to key performers in recent seasons, most often the dreaded ACL tear. In the case of the ACL, not only are athletes assured six-plus months of grueling rehabilitation from surgery, but despite the countless success stories, there are no guarantees they’ll emerge the same caliber athlete they were before.

“The whole injury itself is sad because you think of the kids that have it, all the work they put in to getting to the point where they’re at, and then it’s just gone with one move or one freakish thing,” said Meadows, among the coaches in attendance Tuesday. “So the injury itself is sad to watch, but you’ve got to build those kids back up. Life’s not over.

Like Mr. Loebel said [Tuesday], you’ve got to decide what you want.”

Meadows strives to create a tight-knit, supportive atmosphere while keeping an eye on recovering athletes for warning signs – such as changes in demeanor or slipping grades – that might indicate the need for a deeper conversation.

“Unfortunately we do have experience with that, but we’re more than just a team, we’re like a family,” Meadows said.

“We all enjoy each other, we all care about each other. I think

editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles North girls basketball team forgot who it was for a few minutes Thursday night en route to a convincing 7449 victory against Larkin.

Playing the run-and-gun style that was their signature last year, the North Stars got themselves into a track meet with Larkin early on.

Trailing, 4-3, and 9-5 early in the first quarter, North coach Sean Masoncup called timeout to remind his squad that it was a new year and new North Stars team on the floor.

The reminder worked as the North Stars (6-3, 3-2 Upstate Eight Conference River Division) went on a 13-5 spurt to close the first quarter, and never looked back.

“We forgot who we were in the first two minutes,” Masoncup said. “We wanted to run and gun. We called timeout and talked about getting the ball into Claire (Jakaitis).”

The message got through as Jakaitis, a 6-foot-2 junior who transferred from Montini, got the ball and had 10 first-quarter points. She finished with 14 points for the game. Jakaitis added five rebounds and a blocked shot.

Nichole Davidson, a 5-11 senior, also scored inside almost at will for the North Stars. She led North with 22 points in the contest. Davidson also had seven rebounds and a steal.

“With Claire, Nicole and Morgan (Rosencrants, a 6-1 junior), no one is going to match our size, nobody except maybe Geneva,” Masoncup said.

Most of the North starters sat the fourth quarter as the Royals never got closer than 14 points in the second half.

That’s up to the North Stars, Rooney insists, and how they take to training.

“In a world where they can get things instantaneous, this isn’t a sport where you get anything instantaneous,” Rooney said. “It takes time. As does every sport. Right now, we’ve got to get kids to understand that body movement … fluidity and being able to hold water and be stronger.

“We’ve got a lot of work to do. But I’m looking forward to it. It’s going to be an interesting, interesting couple months here of them learning to achieve something that they can actually achieve, which I believe they can achieve.”

Rooney remains optimistic, and admits he must “keep things relaxed” as he did during girls season. The North Stars girls finished fifth at November’s state meet after tying for 31st the season before.

Again, Rooney won’t yet discuss the boys matching the girls’ climb, but the effort and dedication remains a benchmark.

arose. “Santa” ended the interview much as he did the first time I spoke with him during Geneva’s run to the 2008 Class 7A state championship game, his junior prep season.

Exhausted of questions for the moment, I grinned at Santacaterina and told him I knew what I was walking into before asking if he had anything to add.

“One last time: I love my momma and I couldn’t be more

happy to be here,” Santacaterina said.

Batavia grad Arlis savoring last months as mat man Logan Arlis had to get back to the mat. Because this is it.

Knocked out of much of last season with what he called a “constant knee injury,” Arlis – a redshirt senior wrestler at Illinois and a former Batavia Bulldog — worked all offseason to recover, to get back to action, fueled by the knowledge that is the last season he’ll ever spend competing in the sport he loves.

“It’s my last year, last year on the mat probably ever, so I’m kind of real excited about it, wanting to leave it all out there this year and do everything I can,” Arlis said.

“It’s unreal how fast time goes by. I was starting here at 125 (pounds) my freshman year. That seems like last

year. And now in a couple months it’s going to be all over. That blew my mind how fast everything went by.”

After a trip to California this fall during which Arlis competed in nine matches, the Illini are in the midst of a monthlong break. They last competed Nov. 29 and won’t compete again until Dec. 29. Arlis has been looking forward to that upcoming tournament, the Midlands Championships at Northwestern, for a long time.

“It’s been awesome, the hunger to compete again,” Arlis said. “And I can’t wait for Midlands, a big tournament coming up here that I’ve been training hard for in December over Christmas break. And

ON CAMPUS Vinnie Duber that’s held at Northwestern every year, one of the biggest tournaments of the year. I’m excited to train for that, to go up north and wrestle where my family can make it, come see me.

“Especially my dad, too, he coached me through high school, and he makes the drive to anywhere remotely close to Illinois, he’ll drive out to watch me wrestle. I know he’s real excited to see me compete this year.

“This will be the first time that he’ll see me compete in

actual competition in a year.”

Arlis’ father, Tom, coached him in high school and is still an assistant coach at Batavia, and as Arlis mentioned, this will be the first time his dad will get to watch him wrestle since that injury.

“I think he’s going to enjoy it a lot,” Arlis said, “and I’m just going to enjoy the whole atmosphere. It’s a great tournament, one of my favorite tournaments to wrestle in.”

But aside from just getting to compete in front of family and friends, Arlis is looking forward to kicking off the second half of his final season not too far away from his hometown, and to wrapping up his wrestling career in strong fashion.

“I want to go out there and leave everything out there, just wrestle to my fullest potential this year and hopefully get a shot to wrestle in Big Tens and nationals. We’ll see how everything works out at the end of the year,” he said.

“But I just want to leave it all out there and be able to walk away knowing that I put everything, my heart and soul, into wrestling and be ready to move on to a new chapter in my life.”

Sometime early in the boys swimming season, St. Charles North coach Rob Rooney starts updating a handful of countdowns on the team whiteboard.

Even before that time, there’s a constant in the North Stars’ seasonlong preparation for the Upstate Eight Conference, sectional and state meets.

“We’ve got a lot, a lot of work to do between now and then,” Rooney said. “I’m really happy with the number of boys we have. But the big difference right now between boys swimming and girls swimming is that the girls are serious 365 [days a year]. The boys, we need to get more kids serious 365.

And that’s a little bit of the way society is right now.

“But I think that I’m up for the challenge for the three months and then I’m up for the challenge for the nine months after that of making sure that they’re being fit and working out and being part of the program, things like that.”

Rooney happily trumpets his messages with increased volume, as practices feature a few more athletes than past seasons. Two of them, juniors Stephan Hutchinson and Joe Myhre, were part of North’s 10th-place 200-yard freestyle relay at the 2014 state meet.

North finished tied for 34th in the team standings, and countdowns notwithstanding, it’s much too early to project the

NOTEWORTHY Bulldogs-Saints redux St. Charles East still is dealing with a season-opening spate of injuries that includes veteran senior Ramon Lopez (160 pounds) and a pair of other starters.

Saints coach Jason Potter hardly is using their absences as a crutch for a 35-18 home loss Dec. 12 to Batavia – or anything else that might transpire in the near-term.

“It’s good for the future to see some young guys who are behind some really good kids get an opportunity and go out and make the best of it,” Potter said.

Batavia gained an early edge in the Upstate Eight Conference River Division race with its win against East, the twotime defending league champs.

Throughout the week, Bulldogs coach Scott Bayer preached the message of unlocking potential.

“If we can do that this season, we’re going to be tough in the conference. If we don’t, then we’re going to be hoping for individual success,” Bayer said. “I think these guys know, though, that we have a team that can be competitive.”

A daunting early-season schedule

Much like a tried-and-true recipe, wrestlers follow established guidelines this time of year and throughout the season.

Many enjoy snacking in their early days in the sport before the premium on weight control grows in high school.

“I used to love wrestling as a kid, and I still do, but now it’s a lot different having to make weight and stuff,” Batavia

Kaneland has remained competitive despite missing a number of regulars because of injury, namely brothers Nick and Adam Mish, the Knights’ 113- and 120-pounders.

Adam Mish (sprained shoulder) seems a safer bet for an earlier return than Nick, who’s dealing with an ACL issue.

“I don’t want to count on him being back anytime soon, just because it’s an ACL,” Knights coach Joe Orosco said.

Austin Kedzie has shined at the top of the lineup in the Mishes’ absence.

“I’m happy with what we’re doing.

We’ve just got to keep focusing on the basics,” Orosco said. “As long as we don’t veer off from the basics and we get a couple of guys back from injury, I think we’ll be in a good position.”

COMING ATTRACTION Two months ago, Fabyan Parkway served as the de facto Mason-Dixon line when the Class 7A football playoff pairings were released. So it goes for the wrestling postseason draw, which was revealed this week and features Batavia and Marmion together in a 3A regional but grouped in a sectional separate from St. Charles East, St. Charles North and Geneva. The Bulldogs are regional hosts. In 2A, Kaneland and Burlington Central are together at the Belvidere Regional.

Still, ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ Just before Christmas, some good news and some bad news. I was one of those many saddened by the passing of Pastor Larry Hilkemann mostly of Geneva and – recently – an outreach minister at my church in St. Charles.

It so happened that in his early time at church, both my daughter and I were struggling with health issues. Pastor Larry picked up our “cases” and began a series of regular visits to home and hospital, in two households.

Once he got us all straight in his plan, he quickly went to the heart of our concerns and prayed, accordingly, and with deep conviction that he invited us to share.

NEIGHBORS BRIEF Kiwanis club teams up with troop support group

The St. Charles North and St. Charles East high school drill teams united for their annual Kick-A-Thon fundraiser to help fight cancer in October. The event raised a record-breaking $100,021.14, which was announced Dec. 6 at the beginning of a crosstown rival varsity basketball game between St. Charles North and St. Charles East at St. Charles East High School. Proceeds were donated to the Geneva chapter of the Living Well Resource Center, the American Cancer Society and Fox Valley Food for Health.

This fall, the St. Charles Kiwanis Club donated more than 100 boxes of peanuts to the Fox Valley Troop Support group. Support group members Kathy Tobusch and Chris Johnson spoke about the organization and thanked the St. Charles Kiwanis Club for its support at a recent club meeting.

The support group began in 2007, when Tobusch sent a care package to her son stationed in Iraq. His fellow GIs asked if she could send them one as well and, soon, she was busy supplying troops with items such as peanut butter, canned goods, toilet paper, shaving cream and – the most popular item – baby wipes, states a news release.

Donations of food and personal hygiene items are their primary need, while monetary donations help cover the cost of shipping more than 30 packages a month to Iraq, Germany, Africa, Kuwait and Japan.

The St. Charles Kiwanis Club meets every Tuesday at noon at PNC Bank, 2600 E. Main St. in St. Charles. For membership information, contact Diane DeWitte at 630-377-7402.

Dear Abby: I have been divorced for more than a year and recently started dating a very nice man, “John.” My eldest daughter and her children live with me. I’d like to be able to invite John over to our house, but my daughter doesn’t want “strange men” around her kids, which I understand. Half of calories from ‘sugar alcohols’ count as carbs Dear Doctor K: I have Type 2 diabetes. Many low-carb and sugar-free products contain “sugar alcohols.” What are they? Do they count as carbohydrates?

Dear Reader: Type 2 diabetes is marked by elevated levels of blood glucose, or sugar. Untreated or poorly controlled diabetes can lead to serious complications, including heart attacks, kidney failure, amputation and blindness.

An important part of controlling blood sugar involves making healthy food choices. People with diabetes should be particularly mindful of carbohydrates.

Carbohydrates are like a chain with a number of links. When a carbohydrate with many links enters your stomach and intestine, it is broken down into multiple small pieces. The smallest piece, the single link in the chain, is primarily what is absorbed into the blood. The most important small sugar is glucose.

Table sugar is a two-link carbohydrate that is easily broken down into glucose. If you were to swallow 10 teaspoons of table sugar, it would quickly enter your bloodstream. That’s not good.

You want to eat carbohydrates that are broken down in the gut more slowly so that they enter the bloodstream more slowly.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff We’ve talked about this concept before: Foods that contain carbohydrates that are rapidly broken down into glucose have a high glycemic index and high glycemic load. A steady diet of such foods is not healthy for people with diabetes – or for anyone else.

Carbohydrates are the major component of bread, pasta, cereals, fruit, milk, vegetables and beans. They have more of an impact on blood sugar levels than fats and proteins do.

For years, doctors advised people with diabetes to avoid table sugar or foods with lots of sugar.

That’s still good advice, of course.

But these days, the taboo against sugar has been replaced by an emphasis on overall carbohydrate control.

What does that mean? First, limit carbs to about half of your total calories for the day. Equally important, primarily eat carbohydrates with a low glycemic load.

You asked about the many so-called sugar-free foods that contain sugar alcohols. Examples of sugar alcohols (also called polyols) include sorbitol, xylitol

and mannitol. These sweeteners are often found in sugar-free chewing gum, candy, cookies and ice cream.

Polyols do contain some calories and carbohydrates. But only half of the sugar alcohol is digested and absorbed into the bloodstream. On the other hand, nearly all the table sugar in the diet enters the blood. If you count carbohydrates, as many people with diabetes do, count half the calories from sugar alcohols as carbohydrates.

Products containing sugar alcohols do have drawbacks.

If eaten in large quantities, for example, they can have a laxative effect.

Dr. Wallace: I’m a student at St. Olaf College. This past summer I worked as a food server at a relatively expensive and upscale restaurant and resort on Gull Lake in Minnesota. There were times when I served a group of all men and other times when I served a group of all women. Of course, I’m interested in earning as much money as possible, so I always give excellent service.

I consider myself to be a superior food server because I care about people I serve and also want to make good tips.

I have to say that men are much more generous when it comes to leaving a tip. Women, on the other hand, are embarrassingly stingy.

For example, the men will tip between 15 percent and 25 percent of the bill, while women tip between 5 percent and 15 percent. Not only that, women are much more demanding and some are very rude.

Of course, there are a few exceptions to this tipping pattern.

Your comments, please. – Female Food Server, Northfield, Minnesota Dear Female Server: I have never been fortunate enough to be a food server, but I can say that I reward good food service to the tune of about 20 percent because I appreciate the effort of servers who have a stressful and demanding job.

Please read the following letter I received from another female food server a few years ago. It looks like female diners still need to work on their generosity: Dr. Wallace: I’m a 19-year-old college sophomore, and I’m a part-time waitress at

When it comes to tipping for superb service, women are second-class citizens.

Men usually tip between 15 and 20 percent with 20 percent being more common. Women tip from zero to 15 percent and the average is under 10 percent.

Whenever I see a table of four women sitting in my service area, I cringe.

Yesterday evening was typical. Four women, dressed to kill, were seated at my station.

They all ordered expensive meals with a bottle of wine and dessert and coffee. The total bill was $142 before tax. I was expecting at least a $20 tip. My expectations were too great. These “liberated” women left $8 ($2 each).

Since we want and expect equal rights, we’ve got to act equal, especially when it comes to tipping. Please print my letter. In yesterday’s deal, declarer used an opponent’s opening bid to help him place the missing honor cards. This can also be done by the defenders. Look at the North and East hands. South is in four spades after the given auction. West leads the heart ace. How should East plan the defense?

South’s two-spade rebid guaranteed at least a six-card suit.

With only five spades, he would have shown a second suit, rebid in no-trump or raised clubs. North jumped to game, of course.

At trick one, East had no desire for his partner to shift to another suit. So he encouraged with his heart eight. West cashed the heart king and played a third heart to East’s queen. Now East shifted to the diamond queen. However, declarer won with his ace, drew trumps and claimed.

The diamond suit was a deadend street. East should have counted up the high-card points. He had seven, dummy held 13 and West had already produced seven in hearts. That left only 13 unaccounted for. Surely South had them all.

And if he did, the defenders were not winning a trick in the minors.

Their only chance was to gain a trump trick. When the defenders have taken every possible side-suit trick, it cannot cost – and might gain – to concede a ruff-and-sluff.

If East had led his last heart, West could have ruffed with his spade eight. Then, after dummy overruffed with the queen, East would have been assured of a trump trick.
