Elburn Village Board to consider police chief’s resignation

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ELBURN – Elburn’s police chief for the past seven years plans to step down soon, according to officials.

The Elburn Village Board on Monday will consider and vote to approve the resignation, separation agreement Steve Smith and release of Elburn Police Chief Steve Smith, according to the board’s meeting agenda.

T h e b o a r d Pat Perez also will vote on an agreement with former Kane County Sheriff Pat Perez to act as interim police chief. The meeting begins at 6:45 p.m. Monday in the Elburn Village Hall, 301 E. North St., Elburn.

The board will consider Smith’s resignation in part because Smith wishes to retire, Elburn Village President Dave Anderson said. The documents related to Smith’s resignation will be available once

approved by the board, Anderson said.

“He’s done a good job,” Anderson said of Smith.

The agenda items involving Smith and Perez will be done in open session, and there are no closed session items on Monday’s agenda.

Before becoming chief, Smith was a commander in El-

burn, Anderson said.

Smith also worked at the St. Charles Police Department for 23 years ending in 2004, when he retired as a commander, St. Charles Deputy Police Chief David Kintz wrote Thursday in an email.

Once Smith officially steps down, Anderson said he would like to follow Sugar Grove’s model of assembling a group to assess the candidates that come forward for police chief.

After rounds of interviews, Anderson said he plans to appoint a successor with the advice and consent of the Village Board.

Perez said Anderson reached out to him about a month ago regarding an interim police chief role.

Perez discussed taking on the work with his family, who were in agreement with him working in Elburn as long he could return to retirement after a replacement is appointed. Perez also does some work for the McHenry County-based McGrath Consulting.

“I know the Elburn community and the business owners,” Perez said. “I’m part of the Kaneland School District. …

We’re kind of kindred spirits out here.”

Many first showings of ‘Star Wars’ movie sell out at local theaters

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Geneva resident Joe Karpierz remembers going to a theater to see the first “Star Wars” in 1977 as a recent high school graduate. “i just enjoy the spectacle of space movies,” Karpierz said Thursday. “[This] is going to be bring a lot of memories back.”

Karpiez was one of more than 2,000 people who went to the first local showings of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” on Thursday at the Randall 15 IMAX movie theater in Batavia.

The movie is set 30 years after “Return of the Jedi,” the 1983 film that was the last installment of the original Star Wars trilogy.

Randall 15 had 16 different “Force Awakens” showings scheduled in different formats such as 2-D and IMAX 3-D between 7 and 11:30 p.m.

Thursday, six of them were sold out, theater manager Jeremy Curtis said.

The last large major movie opening for the Batavia theater was the midnight showings of “The Dark Knight Rises” in 2012, Curtis said.

“This could be the biggest opening of all time,” Curtis said of “The Force Awakens.”

The year-end holidays are always a busy time for the theater, but Curtis said he added more staff in anticipation of the Star Wars opening being a significant event for many people.

The theater made sure to stock up on IMAX 3-D glasses, popcorn and drinks, Curtis said.

“I’m not going to spoil it for anybody,” Gorbett said of his post-screening plans.

Although Curtis said it was more common to see people wearing “Star Wars” T-shirts to the openings than costumes, there were a couple of lightsabers and Stormtrooper outfits spotted in the Batavia theater’s lobby.

“All of them are pretty equal,” Booth said. “There’s none of them that you wouldn’t drink.”

Bill Balluff, the president of the Kane County Water Association, presided over the event.

He said it is an opportunity to put a spotlight on what the water experts do.

“They work 24/7 all year long to make sure we get good, clean water that we take for granted,” Balluff said.

BATAVIA – John Dillon, Batavia’s superintendent of water and sewer, smiled Thursday afternoon as he held a plaque declaring that the city’s water has the best taste in Kane County.

Batavia won the Kane County Water Association’s annual taste test, held at the Lincoln Inn. It was the first time Batavia had won the contest since 1997, the first year the event was held.

“It’s an honor for Batavia, certainly,” Dillon said. “We have been in this competition for many years. Obviously, we are proud of our public water supply in Batavia.”

Batavia was among the Kane County municipalities brought in a quart jar filled with water from their system. Recent winners included Elgin (2011 and 2014), Aurora (2008 and 2013), Montgomery (2012), Geneva (2009 and 2010) and Elburn (2007). The event featured three

“It’s going to take away from the look of our city,” Davidson said. “I don’t think this is what our town is about. ... I think you’re trying to squeeze too much into too little space.”

Resident Dan Morrison, who lives on Richards Street, agreed it was too big.

“What you have here is a five-story fortress,” Morrison said. “When I see this, I see a fortress.”

The hearing is expected to be continued, officials said.

10 Tentative labor deal in place in Kaneland

According to a news release sent by both organizations, the agreement is on a four-year contract, which would make it effective through the 2018-19 school year.

BATAVIA – Two men were charged with attempted burglary after they were found Wednesday night with a ladder on the side of the Batavia Ace Hardware, according to police.

Christian Dean Seidelman, 36, of the first block of Whitney Way, Montgomery, and Lawrence R. Lynch, 46, of the first block of Anns Lane, Aurora, were charged with one count each of attempted burglary and criminal trespass to a building, according to a Batavia police news release.

Seidelman also was charged with one count each of possession of burglary tools and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, the release states.

By KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – Batavia police continue to investigate an apparent Wednesday night robbery of a pizza delivery man at gunpoint on the city’s east side, according to a news release.

The incident occurred at about 10:20 p.m. in the 300 block of Woodland Hills Road in Batavia, the release states.

“There is no one in custody at this time, but it’s still an active investigation,” police Detective Kevin Bretz said Thursday during a phone interview.

The 51-year-old-driver reported delivering an order to a residence in the 300 block of Woodland Hills Road when he

was grabbed from behind, according to the release. During a struggle, the driver was shot in the head with what appears to be a compressed air pellet gun, the release states. He sustained a non-life-threatening injury to the scalp.

At some point, the struggle went to the ground at the scene, Bretz said. The man also sustained scrapes and bruises about his body during the incident, according to the release.

The man was treated at an area hospital and released, the release states.

The offender is described as a black man with a height of 6 feet, 3 inches and a medium build, according to the release. He was wearing dark clothing and a ski cap.

The offender ran from the scene and entered a dark-colored sport utility vehicle, possibly an older-model Jeep Cherokee, and left the area south on Woodland Hills Road, the release states.

It was not yet determined late Thursday morning if anything had actually been taken from the driver, Bretz said.

The delivery driver works at a Batavia business, but Bretz declined to disclose the name of the business.

Police will continue to follow up on leads and conduct interviews, Bretz said. There have been no other armed robberies of delivery workers in Batavia, he said.

“Hopefully, [this] is the only one,” Bretz said.

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles police and fire departments will be in a Salvation Army red kettle bell-ringing showdown from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Blue Goose Market, 300 S Second St., St. Charles.

Called Guns-N-Hoses, volunteer bell ringers from both city entities will man the red kettles in a “friendly competition,” said John Arthur Anderson, the St. Charles Township supervisor and a Salvation Army advisory board member.

Anderson brought the idea to St. Charles police and fire officials, who both agreed to participate.

Health law’s biggest threat yet comes from Congress BLOOMBERG VIEW After dozens of futile votes to repeal President Barack Obama’s health care law, Republicans in Congress finally may have found a winning strategy: Delay or suspend the taxes that pay for the program and enfold the provisions in a larger spending bill that has to pass.

Even congressional Democrats are on board with the plan – at least this year. But these taxes are crucial to the success of health care reform, and Democrats need to ensure the delays and hiatuses remain temporary.

Each of three taxes targeted in the spending bill is defensible on its merits. The first, the socalled Cadillac tax on high-cost, employer-sponsored health plans, does more than just help to pay for the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare; it also is meant to help control health care costs by giving employers an incentive to direct less compensation toward health benefits and more toward wages.

The design of the tax could be improved, but the goal of lower costs is beyond dispute. By delaying the tax for two years, the bill sets back that goal.

The other taxes frozen by this deal don’t do as much to promote efficiency, but they’re important in helping to pay for the law. One of the effects of the health law has been to increase the revenue of many health care providers. So the law taxes some of that new revenue – including a 2.3 percent tax on sales of medical devices and an annual fee on health insurers. The spending bill lifts the device tax for two years and the insurance tax for one.

If those three taxes are delayed or lifted only for the time agreed to in the omnibus bill, it will cost the federal government an estimated $30 billion in lost revenue over two years. That’s a big if. Once Congress suspends a tax, it’s very hard to reinstate it. Permanently repealing these three taxes would cost $257 billion by 2025.

One of the chief Republican arguments against the Affordable Care Act has been that, contrary to official projections, the law wouldn’t pay for itself. After five years, that warning has failed to come true. Now the law’s opponents are changing the law to match their predictions.

It’s neat trick. But it does nothing to advance the goal of a more inclusive and efficient health care system. If Republicans really want to be taken seriously on health care reform – and they do – they might want to spend less dreaming up ways to undermine Obamacare and more time proposing ways to improve it.

THE FIRST

Batavia wins ‘The Event II’ before packed house that sparked both schools

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com BATAVIA –The stage was set for the Batavia wrestling team hosting Geneva in what became known as “The Event II,” but this time in the Bulldogs’ gymnasium instead of the Batavia Fine Arts Centre.

Aside from a loss to begin the match, the Bulldogs made sure not to disappoint the packed gymnasium, which included its famed blow-up Bulldog head. Batavia won nine of the final 10 matches to cruise to the Upstate Eight Conference River Division dual victory over the Vikings, 52-12, Thursday night.

The event drew a large crowd from both schools. The Batavia student section took the tug-of-war in the halftime break of the meet, but wrestlers made sure to focus on the task at hand despite the hoopla.

“I think it was harder for some of the younger guys to adjust and not feel the nerves,” said senior Derek Nutley, who won by fall in his match at 182 pounds. “Once we got into the heart of our lineup, that’s where we feel most confident and we took off from there. It was a really cool atmosphere and once you realize it’s just another match, it settles any nerves and you can focus.”

Nutley’s pin of Geneva’s Cole Campbell was the third consecutive win by fall for the Bulldogs (4-6, 3-0 UEC River) – this first two of which came from Nolan Adams (160) and Nick Benson (170).

Those three pins were also part of seven straight match wins for Batavia, after Geneva’s Michael Donatelli won by decision, 8-4, at 126 pounds over Batavia’s Dylan Doranski.

Batavia coach Scott Bayer was obviously happy with the team result, but still feels his team can always improve.

But with the atmosphere of the night, he was expecting things to not be as clean as usual.

I think more than anything it was good for the sport. I think we showcased a great dual here tonight, and whether or not the team score was close, there were some very competitive matches out there today.”

Geneva (6-6, 2-1 UEC River) and coach Tom Chernich were expecting the atmosphere they got and Chernich thought his team battled in every match. While the team result may not have gone in the Vikings’ favor, Cher-

nich felt there certainly were positive takeaways from the dual.

“I think any packed gym like this will add a bit of that nervous energy,” Chernich said. “It showed, but I did feel like there were a lot of competitive matches and thought for the most part we battled very hard. We’re a young team and situations like this can help us grow, but overall it was an awesome night for both teams and we were proud to be a part of it.”

Joining the three pins in wins of that streak for Batavia were Michael Doranski (132 pounds), Seth Winkle (138), Matt Sutherland (145) and Curtis Paton (152).

Geneva’s Alex Crowe gave the Vikings a bit of light at 195 pounds with a win by decision (9-5) to break the Bulldogs’ streak. But after Crowe’s victory, two more wins by fall came for the Bulldogs to end the match, thanks to Dylan Uzmecki and D’Andre Meadows.

“There were some things to improve on, like our sloppiness at times, but all in all, I was happy with our aggression tonight,” Bayer said. “We got a lot of the first takedowns and took control of matches when we needed to. I also thought our conditioning was fantastic tonight and thought it was clear than we won that area as well.”

Masoncup lends Austin supportive ‘Voice’ Sean Masoncup flipped the script on the garden variety prep roundup call Tuesday night.

Usually, it’s myself or sports reporter Chris Casey asking coaches the questions: What was the score? Who were some stat leaders? What did you think?

After obliging with information on the St. Charles North girls basketball team’s road rout of Hoffman Estates, however, Masoncup had a request of his own. Could I please keep quiet about what was transpiring on the season finale of NBC’s “The Voice”?

He had it taped at home.

Masoncup and the rest of the viewing world now know that local-boy-madegood Jeffery Austin, a North and Haines Middle School product, finished fourth in the national singing competition. The 24-year-old Austin’s time as a Haines student overlapped with Masoncup, a physical education teacher.

“It’s been pretty cool at Haines,” Masoncup said. “I had zero to do with any singing ability, though. That’s for sure.”

Austin recently gave a concert at Haines, which tightened the whole six-degrees-of-separation dynamic considerably, especially for the young student body.

Masoncup became a supportive Austin tweeter (and retweeter) well before that. He also is approaching veteran status as a devoted “Voice” guy.

“My wife and kids watched it religiously for about the past six years, and they sort of rankled me in the last two,” Masoncup said, “so it’s been pretty cool to see a kid from our hometown do it. He’s got a heck of a voice, a heck of a talent.”

And a formidable fan club back home.

Home for the holidays: Many Steel parents – that’s biological, not billet – meet their sons in the middle and travel to their share of home games at Fox Valley Ice Arena. Some even follow the USHL club on the road.

Although those maneuvers undoubtedly steel these young men in the midst of the long-nomadic junior hockey culture, there’s arguably no substitute for staying put.

24 Dulled sense of taste can have many different causes Dear Dr. K : Over the past year or so I’ve noticed my sense of taste isn’t as sharp as it used to be.

What could be happening?

Dear Reader : Taste buds line your tongue, throat and the back of the roof of your mouth. When food or drink stimulates them, they send a message to your brain allowing you to identify the taste as sweet, sour, bitter, salty or savory.

In addition, thousands of nerve endings on the moist surfaces of the eyes, nose, mouth and throat help you experience the food you’re eating.

They convey sensations such as heat, cold and texture.

The aroma of food also is an important element of taste. A food’s aroma travels from the mouth to the nose via a channel at the top of the throat.

That’s why it’s difficult to taste anything when your nose is stuffed up.

Since the mechanisms of taste are complicated, it makes sense that there are many ways for them to go wrong. Here are a few of the more common problems: • Since smell and taste are so intricately linked, a problem with smell can make foods lose taste. Your sense of smell can be impaired by a blocked-up nose. Common conditions that cause nasal stuffiness may impair taste, including allergies, secondhand smoke, a sinus infection, or infection or small growths in the nose.

• Many medicines, including some antibiotics and antihistamines, can alter your sense of taste. Tell

• Dry mouth causes your mouth and throat to feel severely parched. It also affects your ability to taste because saliva has a complex impact on taste. Many commonly used medicines (such as antihistamines) can cause dry mouth.

• After age 50, the number of taste buds starts to decrease. As a result, your sense of taste may decline with age.

• Cigarettes damage taste buds, dulling the sense of taste. The good news: If you quit, your sense of taste returns.

• More serious problems, such as diabetes, liver disease, kidney disease, Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease, can diminish the senses of taste and smell.

I have a theory (unproven) that some viral infections can affect the nerves that send smell and taste signals from the mouth and throat to the brain.

I had a bad viral infection when I was a pre-teen, and since then my sense of smell has not been as good.

If you’ve noticed a change or a problem with taste that lasts for more than a week or two, it’s worth talking to your doctor.

Co-worker needs counseling – big time Dr. Wallace: I’m 19 and the guy I’m dating is 21 and we both work in the same office.

We started saying hi about two weeks after he was hired. Two weeks later we were dating and have been seeing each other socially for three months. He is handsome, very intelligent and has a great sense of humor. We have lots of fun when we’re together, and he has been a perfect gentleman.

Then last week, a female employee told me she had to tell me something she thought I should know. She said another employee had told her this guy had been arrested a year ago for physical abuse of the girl he was dating.

When I confronted him about what I thought to be just a rumor, he admitted it. He said they were at a party and this girl was flirting with another guy when he lost his cool and punched her in the face. Someone else at the party called the police and he was arrested. He said that’s the only time he ever became angry and punched a girl, and he promised me it would never happen again.

I’m still in shock at what he told me and I’m not so sure I could trust him not to be physically abusive to me. Please give me your advice about this situation. – Confused, Phoenix Confused: Stop debating.

Eliminate this guy from your life immediately. He didn’t simply argue with his date when

Dr. Wallace: I would like to have a pet. My friend has a pet wild rabbit. His brother caught it about two months ago and it seems very tame. They keep it in a cage and it seems to like it there. They feed it carrots and lettuce.

Now his father is saying he has to give the rabbit away or return it to the wild. I want to take the rabbit for my pet, but I want to be prepared when I present the proposal to my parents.

One well-produced book is “The Power of Positive Bidding”

by Wladyslaw Izdebski, Dariusz Kardas and Wlodzimierz Krysztofczyk (Weidenfeld & Nicolson). It is subtitled “Bidding Secrets of the Italian Champions.”

The authors point out that Italy has easily the best record in European and world team championships in recent years. They believe that the primary reason is the Italians’ bidding.

The various methods are explained and highlighted with many deals from those tournaments.

The second chapter compares the different meanings for a two-notrump opening. A lot of tournament players have abandoned the strong, balanced interpretation, and the authors argue that this is a mistake, because if you are forced to open at a lower level, you give the opponents an opportunity to disrupt the auction.

In this deal, West’s one-club bid was natural but unlimited. North threw in a very weak one-diamond overcall, and despite West’s powerful one-no-trump rebid and East’s use of Stayman, East-West sold out to three spades. To make matters worse, that contract was unbeatable.

South lost only one spade, two hearts and one club.

At the other table, West opened two no-trump, East used Stayman, West denied a major, and East signed off in three no-trump.

After North led the diamond jack, West won with his king and carefully played the clubs (ace, overtake the 10 with dummy’s king, and cross later to the eight and nine) to end with 11 tricks: one spade, four hearts, one diamond and five clubs.
