ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – An injured motorist who sought help at a gas station last week knew his vehicle had been struck by something but refused to believe police about what did happen – that he was hit by a train, according to a Kane County Sheriff’s Office report.

A sheriff’s deputy met Felipe Rivera about 4:20 a.m. Dec. 11 and learned the 38-year-old Elgin resident left a work Christmas party about 11 p.m. or midnight and was heading home when he blacked out and was struck

by something, according to the report.

Rivera reportedly told the deputy that he was stuck in his car for a while and called out for help. No help arrived, and he couldn’t find his phone, police reported, so he crawled out. He started to walk home but stopped at the gas station because he was in too much pain to go farther, according to the report.

With a tip from the South Elgin Police Department, the deputy visited the area of Route 25 and Gilbert Street in St. Charles Township, where a Nissan Maxima was reportedly lying east of Route 25 at the railroad crossing south of Gilbert Street.

The car had “extensive damage,” the report says.

The railroad stop arm for northbound traffic on Route 25 also was reported to be

damaged. Police learned that the last eastbound train went by that location at 1:45 a.m., according to the report.

The report indicated authorities determined that Rivera either fell asleep while stopped northbound at the railroad tracks and drifted into the side of the train as it went east, or he blacked out while driving and drove into the side of the train.

The deputy reported Rivera was very surprised he was hit by a train and refused to believe it.

Rivera, of the 100 block of Gifford Street, was charged with driving under the influence, driving with a suspended license and disobeying a signal indicating the approach of a train.

He was released on a notice to appear, and his car was towed.

And, yet, the great outdoors still has a great deal in store and much to explore, even when temperatures dive and ponds freeze. For toddlers and teens, civic groups and senior citizens who love going outdoors to explore natural surroundings but are hesitant to do so at this time of year, “Nature On the Go” programs offered by Hickory Knolls Discovery Center take the snow show on the road and bring the outside in.

“When it’s cold and miserable, no one wants to come out for field trips,” said Lauren Kulinski, nature programs supervisor. “Yet schools are still open; day care still operates; and indoor-bound people still want to interact with what’s happening outdoors. So, for people who can’t get out into nature, we’ll bring nature to you.”

For winter wimps who think of Mother Nature as a fair-weather friend, the staff of traveling naturalists at Hickory Knolls Discovery Center has designed programming suitable for all age groups. Hourlong, interactive programs

abound with artifacts, photos and other hands-on elements to engage the imagination and bring the programs to life.

Perfect for day cares and preschools, as well as senior living and assisted care facilities, the Nature On-the-Go programs are especially popular as part of St. Charles School District 303’s after-school enrichment activities, as well as with home-school organizations, according to Kulinski.

Little ones can learn about snakes, turtles and lizards – oh, my! – through the “Scaly Friends” program or discover the various adaptation and survival skills employed by “Winter Animals,” while “Who Who Hoot” unearths the mysterious, magical world of owls.

Teens will love learning how to make simple machines, such as catapults and blasters, during “Marshmallow Mania,” or they can test their competitive nature through the “Go Green! Recycling Olympics” that explores different methods for recycling and reusing materials. And for those who aren’t going to let a little thing like snow keep them from getting around, “Making Tracks” promises to be a real snowshoe adventure.

Don’t wait on losing weight Trainers say there’s no need to hold off until New Year’s Day to start a routine

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com Planning to make big lifestyle changes in 2015? Local fitness experts said waiting until Jan. 1 isn’t necessary.

With the upcoming gamut of holiday food and parties, trainers recommend maintaining current workout routines, or starting a routine for those who don’t already do so, to stay ahead of the game.

“You’ll burn off some of the calories that will come from all the gatherings,” said Chris Hylton, owner of River West Family Fitness, 108 1st St., Batavia. “Starting before the holidays is always a good time.”

A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2000 concluded that the average weight gain during the holidays is one pound.

This average increase, however, did not appear to go away during the study participants’ spring and summer months, resulting in an continual

weight increase over time, according to the study.

The owners of various fitness centers say they always see an uptick in membership in January, which they attribute to people using the new year as a fresh start. Those feelings don’t always continue later in the year, said Danny DeKing, co-owner of Pound 4 Pound Fitness, 21 S. Main St. in Elburn.

“We see a downslide in the number [of members] as the year continues on,” DeKing said. “People get motivated based on New Year’s resolutions. When that wears out, people start to fade out.”

To encourage residents to start their fitness goals early, Hylton, DeKing and other local fitness centers are offering package deals and reduced memberships for those that join this month.

Getting started on two key tasks – exercise and dieting – will be difficult for anyone that is usually sedentary, Hylton

said. The orientation for a new RiverWest Fitness customer includes a discussion of their goals and a review of how to use the training equipment in the facility.

A little support can go a long way for those starting an exercise regiment. Most fitness centers offer personal, one-on-one training so someone is there to keep customers motivated. Hylton also finds that those who work out with a friend or in groups tend to hold themselves more accountable.

St. Charles resident Virginia Kammerer has found an interest in Zumba classes and other workouts offered at the Curves located at 1578 E. Main St. in St. Charles. She said Jeanine Fitzmaurice, owner and franchisee of the St. Charles location, is a great motivator and always urges customers to push harder and further their limits.

“I try to go three times a week,” Kammerer said. “I feel

better for it, frankly.”

Fitzmaurice said walking is a good introductory exercise for someone who doesn’t already stay active. But it should be complemented by strength training to build muscle, she said.

Nearly all local fitness center owners encourage people to use portion control at various holiday gatherings this season. This could range from selecting the holiday drinks with the fewest calories to having to just one cookie instead of a handful, DeKing said.

“I do want people to enjoy the holidays … but we have to make better choices when [we] are out at restaurant and parties,” Fitzmaurice said.

No matter what time of year, the results will only be as significant as what the individual contributes, the owners said.

“Really it comes down to hard work and dedication,” Hylton said.

GENEVA – Applying for jobs in Kane County government is about to get easier.

The county is preparing to spend about $95,200 on a paperless recruiting software system that will allow applicants to apply for multiple jobs at a time and to do so electronically.

On the county’s end, Human Resources Executive Director Sheila McCraven said, the software will automate the current paper-based process, which she described as labor intensive.

According to agenda documents, the system from NeoGov of El Segundo, California, will let staff focus on more important issues than the administrative work of sorting through an “endless stream of applications and resumes.”

Other improvements include statistical tracking for equal employment opportunity purposes, scheduling between all parties involved in a candidate’s recruitment process and collaboration between hiring departments and offices, documents show.

“I think it’s going to be a big improvement for the county,” McCraven told the Human Services Committee on Wednesday.

The documents indicate the software will be implemented over the next four to six months at a cost not to exceed $95,200 for a three-year contract.

The system is budgeted, McCraven said. The funds previously were awarded to the information technology department from the Grand Victoria Casino fund.

The committee recommended approval of the purchase.

Sony Pictures has canceled the Christmas Day showing of “The Interview” after several theater chains decided not to show the movie because of threats of violence from the hackers behind a cyberattack on the studio, according to news reports.

Before Wednesday’s announcement, Classic Cinemas, which operates Charlestowne 18 in St. Charles, posted a statement on its Facebook page indicating it already had decided not to show the movie. Cinemark, which operates Cinemark Tinseltown USA in North Aurora, also had chosen not to show the movie.

It is with great sadness that I share with you today that Kelly Kaye Bullock, age 69, of South Barrington and Swan Valley Montana, passed away Monday, December 15, 2014 at St. Alexis Hospital in Hoffman Estates.

Kelly graduated from College of Lake County with Honors and was licensed as a Registered Nurse in both Illinois and Montana. She was Secretary and Treasurer for Bison Gear & Engineering Corporation in St. Charles, Illinois and served two terms as Barrington Township Trustee.

She was born October 26, 1945 in Dayton, Ohio to Eddie and Marion Campbell.

GENEVA – A dog owner who was disturbed by a letter he and others in his neighborhood received asked police to document the incident, according to a Kane County Sheriff’s Office report.

According to the report, a resident of the 0S300 block of Grengs Lane near Geneva contacted the sheriff’s office Dec. 10 after getting a letter addressed to “Dog Owner” that contained a copy of the Kane County Animal Control ordinance.

Parts of the document were highlighted, police reported, and the resident was “very disturbed” by this highlighted phrase: “ordering the humane destruction of said animal.”

The resident has a dog, but the sheriff’s office never has been to his home for an animal complaint, police reported.

Other dog owners in the neighborhood also got a letter, according to the report. The report indicated none of them had a previous animal complaint.

One recipient reportedly went to Animal Control to see if it had sent the letter and was

told no and got the same answer from the sheriff’s office.

Lt. Pat Gengler wrote in an email that official agencies normally will use official letterhead and envelopes. With so many scams out there, he recommended that recipients of such mail shouldn’t take the information in it at face value.

“A good rule of thumb is that anytime you receive any correspondence like this that appears to come from an official agency, like the sheriff’s office, do some of your own research first before you respond,” Gengler wrote.

The recipients reportedly believed a woman who has yelled at dog walkers and has told their dogs to “shut up” was responsible.

Police reportedly contacted the woman, who claimed to have also gotten a letter.

The report indicated the woman, who doesn’t have a dog, agreed with the letter, was happy it went out and said the dogs in the neighborhood bark too much.

Police told her to contact the sheriff’s office if she ever has an issue with dogs barking excessively, according to the report.

Village weighing removal of dam

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com NORTH AURORA – Village officials are studying whether to remove the dam near North Aurora Village Hall as a way to improve the quality of the Fox River.

The topic was discussed at Monday’s Committee of the Whole meeting. Earlier this month, the Fox River Study Group, along with members of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, made a presentation to the North Aurora Village Board.

The Fox River Study Group is a coalition of different groups, such as the Friends of the Fox River, Sierra Club and Fox River Ecosystem Partnership, working together to assess water quality in the Fox River watershed. The IDNR has stated its intent to remove dams to improve water quality, aquatic habitat and recreational safety.

The dam in North Aurora is owned by the IDNR and maintained by the Fox Valley Park District. Officials are looking at a possible intergovernmental agreement between the village, the Fox Valley Park Dis-

trict and the IDNR regarding the dam’s removal.

“We would like to see the river revert back to what it was,” North Aurora Village President Dale Berman said at Monday’s meeting. “We don’t need the dam.”

Berman previously had said removing the dam would improve safety. A teenager drowned trying to go over the North Aurora dam in the 1990s.

Village Administrator Steve Bosco said several items still need to be addressed, including determining the cost estimates for removing the dam and the maximum amount of funding the IDNR will provide for the project.

Other issues that need to be addressed include determining the impact of dam removal on water levels along public and private property, and determining whether engineering, construction and long-term maintenance would be needed to keep the former millrace running along North Aurora Riverfront Park, Bosco said.

According to the Washington Post story, there was no credible intelligence to indicate there is an active plot against movie theaters in the United States, said an official with the Department of Homeland Security who asked not to be identified during an investigation.

Former STC man gets 15 years for sex crimes KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com A former St. Charles man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison Tuesday after he was convicted of sexually assaulting a child in his family, according to a news release issued by the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Ramiro Fonseca, 43, who most recently lived in Texas, previously was convicted by Kane County Circuit Judge Susan Clancy Boles of two counts of criminal sexual assault, which is a Class 1 felony, and criminal sexual abuse, a Class 2 felony.

According to the release, during the trial, prosecutors presented evidence that between July 2009 and February 2011, Fonseca committed multiple acts of sexual penetration with the victim, who was younger than 18 at the time.

Fonseca and the victim are relatives. The crimes took place at Fonseca’s residence in St.

Charles.

After Fonseca moved to Texas, the victim disclosed the crimes to a counselor, who reported the information to the Illinois Department of Child and Family Services as required by law, the release stated.

In addition to Ramiro the prison term, Fonseca Fonseca must register for life as a sexual offender.

The sentence is six years for each sexual assault count and three years for the sexual abuse count, the release stated. The terms are to be served consecutively. According to Illinois law, Fonseca must serve at least 85 percent of each of the six-year terms, and he is eligible for day-for-day sentencing on the three-year term.

He received credit for at least 336 days served in the Kane County jail.

The 4-1 vote came four hours after the board’s regular meeting and more than 90 minutes into a special meeting that immediately followed. Trustee James Kopec cast the lone vote not to extend Police Chief Daniel Hoffman’s contract. Trustee Al Lenkaitis was absent.

In a memo given to trustees and the media, Village President Patsy Smith stated she was giving notice that she would veto a Dec. 2 board action in which the board extended Hoffman’s contract from its Dec. 27 expiration to May 2015, when Smith’s own term formally ends.

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – A Chicago man will be sentenced next month after pleading guilty to felony armed violence in connection with an armed robbery in January at the Batavia Pantry on East Wilson Street.

Antwann L. Hunt, 28, recently pleaded guilty to felony armed violence in the Jan. 25 robbery. His sentencing hearing is set for Jan. 23.

He remained in Kane County Jail on Wednesday evening on a $300,000 bond. Hunt has a listed address in the 1300 block of South Spaulding Avenue in Chicago, but police said he was staying at the Batavia Apartments in the 1100 block of East Wilson Street in Batavia at the time of the robbery.

has previously said. A clerk suffered minor injuries after a brief struggle with Hunt, who had a knife, Bretz said. The clerk was treated at the scene.

In addition, a Batavia police officer was injured during a foot pursuit that took place after the robbery. The police officer was taken to a local hospital, where he was treated and released, police said.

Tis the season for acts of charity My bedroom is taken over by an army of lovable stuffed snowmen with silly red and green colored hats and cookie-decorated scarves. But oh, I don’t mind it one bit.

Those plush snowmen also are accompanied by several close friends, including a bundle of elves and a reindeer or two.

All of these fellow buddies live peacefully around a glittery pink Christmas tree placed on top of a jewelry box on my dresser.

I even have childhood stockings dangling from my doorknobs and evergreen garland draped along my headboard. To top off my Christmas-themed room, I have homemade paper snowflakes hanging from my ceiling, which allows me to visualize fluffy snow gliding through the crisp winter air. Although I take pride in my carefully decorated winter wonderland of a bedroom every year, this obviously is not the most vital part of the holiday season.

At my high school, I’m vice president of an after-school volunteer group called Interact Club. (I’ve been part of this club since it began my freshman year.) In the club, we’re dedicated to helping nearby groups and organizations in need.

Throughout the school year, I will tutor third-graders at an elementary school or package cans of food at the Northern Illinois Food Bank, among other events. Although I’m glad to give up a portion of my time to help out year-round, I must say that there’s no better time to volunteer than in December. Surely, the events during this month are just so much more heartwarming and festive. Particularly, there are two volunteer opportunities my friends and I specifically sign up for every holiday season.

For the past few Christmas Eve mornings, I’ve volunteered to spend time at a home for people with developmental disabilities and special health care needs.

THE FIRST AMENDMENT

Volunteer groups are assigned to one patient, so it’s a very personable occasion. Truly, it’s such a sweet moment to share in the patient’s happiness as they open their gifts.

Furthermore, if you have smaller children or simply admire dazzling Christmas lights, then you probably are aware of the local Mooseheart Holiday Lights extravaganza. Last year was my first time helping out there, and it was probably one of the simplest, yet merriest places I’ve volunteered.

For one thing, I got to see a bunch of kids’ lovable smiles (and some crying frowns) after they met Santa Claus. Additionally, I assisted kids at a crafts table while they colored Rudolph coloring pages, and I also showed children how to make a Christmas snowman craft. Really, this lighthearted night was indeed a treat. (I even got a free cup of hot cocoa to top it off.) I’m thoroughly looking forward to going again this year.

Ultimately, I’d personally like to wish everyone a merry Christmas, happy Hanukkah or whatever holiday you celebrate. May you all find comfort with your families and make everlasting memories with friends. Bake some sugar cookies, snuggle up by the fire with a blanket and just cherish life during this joyful, lovely season. After all, the holidays come around only once a year.

Set torture out of bounds THE WASHINGTON POST If Dick Cheney’s views carry the day, releasing the Senate intelligence committee’s horrifying account of CIA torture after Sept. 11, 2001, hardly will have been worth it.

NBC’s Chuck Todd pressed the former vice president Sunday on what he would consider torture, if not extreme sleep deprivation, shackling people with their arms over their heads for 22 hours at a time, sealing detainees in coffin-size boxes and, yes, waterboarding.

“Waterboarding, the way we did it, was, in fact, not torture,” Cheney said.

Here is how the CIA did it, according to the Senate report: “Abu Zubaydah’s waterboarding sessions ‘resulted in immediate fluid intake and involuntary leg, chest and arm spasms’ and ‘hysterical pleas.’ A medical officer who oversaw the interrogation of [Khalid Sheik Mohammed] stated that the waterboard technique had evolved beyond the ‘sensation of drowning’ to what he described as a ‘series of near drownings.’ ... During at least one waterboard session, Abu Zubaydah ‘became completely unresponsive, with bubbles rising through his open, full month.’ He remained unresponsive after the waterboard was rotated upward. Upon medical intervention, he regained consciousness and expelled ‘copious amounts of liquid.’ ”

“Now, you can look for various definitions” of torture, Cheney said Sunday.

The U.N. Convention Against Torture, to which the United States is a signatory, defines torture as “any act by which severe pain or suffering, whether physical or mental, is intentionally inflicted.” If much of what the Senate report detailed is not torture, those words have little meaning.

The CIA admits those officers and contractors who went even further than what the Bush administration sanctioned, using techniques CIA Director John Brennan described as “abhorrent,” weren’t duly punished a decade ago. They should be now. But the most productive thing that can come from this dark episode is a stronger, clearer national understanding of what torture is – and that its practice is off-limits.

“The allegations are false and/or embellishments. Included in the released docu-

ments are items that were included in my annual personnel evaluation, which I vehemently contradicted,” Hoffman said.

“There are certain items that can and cannot be released regarding personnel issues, and I believe this release of information crosses that line.”

Kopec said the reasons Smith listed for not extending Hoffman’s contract were valid.

But Village Administrator Jennifer Johnsen, as Hoffman’s immediate supervisor, said his contract should be extended. Johnsen said her evaluation of Hoffman included several performance goals and recommended that he remain as chief.

“He has done an excellent job in his role as chief, especially given the difficulties in

serving in a newly incorporated community,” Johnsen said.

Trustee Laura Andersen called Smith’s list of reasons

“allegations that have not been proven” and said she agreed with Johnsen’s recommendation regarding the chief.

“Here we have something, in my opinion, that was leaked

prematurely,” Andersen said of Smith’s list. “This is the management style we have here at village hall. This is a destructive path, and it is going to drag us down.”

St. Charles resident publishes second book Linda Brodine authors ‘Gramma, Please Tell Us More Stories!’

Brodine has published a second book, “Gramma, Please Tell Us More Stories!,” the sequel to her first book, “Gramma, Please Tell Us A Story!” Both books are available at Brodine’s website, www. quilt-stories.com, Town House Books in St. Charles and Prairie Shop Quilts in Batavia, among other locations.

Kane County Chronicle reporter Eric Schelkopf had the chance to talk to Brodine about her new book.

Eric Schelkopf: So, does the book title kind of sum up the book?

Linda Brodine: It is a continuation of the type of stories from “Gramma, Please Tell Us A Story!” Between the two books, there are 13 unique stories altogether, either featuring my children or my grandchildren.

We raised our children out in the country in Utica, so most of the stories I write have to do with nature and the wide open spaces. It just is a little bit of a different lifestyle than children who grow up in town, or in the city.

It was really wonderful. A lot of times, you don’t really appreciate your surroundings. As time went on, we realized that we sort of lived this magical, wonderful life out in the country.

Schelkopf: So, these stories are based on when you lived in Utica?

Brodine: Well, not all of them. Some of them are, and others are based on the experiences of my grandchildren.

Most of my stories are based on the experiences of my children and grandchildren, and some of their requests for stories about things like dinosaurs. I can’t have really lived through that time, but I sure can tell stories about it.

We’re working on a third book, “Grandpa, Please Tell Us A Story.” That will be based on some of my husband’s experiences growing up. When you’re an author, once you start, you get new ideas all the time, and they take on a life of their own.

I just feel very blessed, to have been able to tell 13 stories so far, and then hopefully some more in the future.

Schelkopf: So, the titles of the books, “Gram-

ma, Please Tell Us A Story!” and “Gramma, Please Tell Us More Stories!” are quite literal?

Brodine: They are. They are totally literal. That’s how it all started.

I’m pushing my grandkids on a swing, singing them swinging songs and telling them fairy tales. They wanted something different, so I expanded on that and started making things up.

From there, I started remembering more experiences that my own children had and then I started developing stories from the ideas that my grandchildren presented to me. I have nine grandkids, and each one of them is so unique and so different.

So, there are plenty of ideas to go around when you’re around them. I just kind of developed ideas from them, a lot of times without them even knowing it.

My daughter, Jennifer, is my editor.

And I trust her tremendously.

She’s excellent with punctuation and

idea development. She never wants to change the ideas in the story, but she definitely wants all of it to make sense.

She looks at it from the perspective of a general, independent reader. Then she looks at it as a parent reading to a child.

She has three children of her own.

Then she tries to see it from a child’s perspective. So, it’s very helpful to have her do that for me. We’re a great team.

Schelkopf: And you also incorporate your love for quilting in the books. I understand you created a themed quilt for each of the 13 stories, and have created quilts that you showcase at quilt and craft fairs and at presentations.

Brodine: Each quilt actually does tell the story. So, when I go to a school or library, I can tell the story from the quilt.

The kids get such a huge kick out of it, because it’s a combination of the three arts – the writing, the illustrations and then the quilting.

Eric Schelkopf: Great talking to you again.

The last time I talked to you was in 2009, when you were part of the Mega Winterfest with Kellie Pickler at the Mega Center at Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles. Of course, you are coming back to town with your own Christmas show and your new Christmas album, “ONE Christmas – Chapter 1.” How long have you been thinking about making this album?

LeAnn Rimes: It actually kind of came about very quickly last year. The last Christmas album I made was 10 years ago, so I was thinking, “Hey, it’s kind of time.”

I didn’t want it to be another 10 years before I was able to record another Christmas record. I decided that I wanted to stretch it out for the next three years.

I selfishly did it, too, because I really, really love Christmas. I love all these songs, obviously. We haven’t even gotten to what we will be putting on the second EP. Schelkopf: Was it hard choosing the songs for this album? How did you go about doing that?

Rimes: Not really. Honestly, these are the first ones that popped out to me.

I knew I wanted to record “I Want A Hippopotamus for Christmas.” It’s my absolute favorite Christmas song. It’s so fun.

It was fun to play around with songs that I’ve heard or listened to my whole life. A lot of it is just me and a couple of instruments. And I think there’s something very sweet about that.

With “Blue Christmas,” I think we really brought out the sadness of it. It runs the gambit of emotions that Christmas can conjure up for many different people. It can be a very different Christmas, depending on what your

Schelkopf: During the Arcada show, are you also going to be doing songs from throughout your career?

Rimes: I’ve done Christmas tours before where it is kind of half and half, my music and Christmas music.

Between the last Christmas record and – now – this EP, it definitely lends itself for a full show. We do two of my songs.

Other than that, it’s really all holiday music.

Schelkopf: Are you going to do “Blue?”

Rimes: We do “Blue Christmas” into “Blue.” It had to happen.

Schelkopf: At age 14, you became the youngest person to receive a Grammy Award.

How do you think your music has evolved since then?

Rimes: I’ve evolved, just from a little girl into a woman, going through major life changes. I think all of that affects my music. I think I’m a lot less fearful of what I say and what I dive into as a songwriter. I definitely open myself up more than I ever have, and I think that’s where my best music comes from.

Schelkopf: What do you think of today’s country music scene? Are there artists, country or otherwise, who you respect?

Rimes: You know, it definitely has changed. I feel like there was a much broader spectrum and a lot more women in country music back in the ’90s. It was definitely an easier place to break into. But I love Miranda Lambert. I think she is probably my favorite as far as country artists go.

She is willing to take risks and write true stories. The country artists I grew up on, they were these real artists writing about what they were living.

You got a real connection, and they were very heartfelt stories and songs.

I feel like we have lost a lot of that.

So, it’s nice to see someone like Miranda who actually does that.

Emotion on reserve Vikings’ bench savors spotlight in romp

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva junior guard Jen Cale usually smirks when public address announcer Jason Santo gives her teammates the big-shot treatment during home girls basketball games.

As the first quarter of Wednesday’s rout of Glenbard North wound down, she struggled for a moment to contain herself.

“JEN CAAAAAALE!” It was happening.

Much like several teammates, Cale enjoyed a season-high in minutes during a 54-16 nonconference victory.

The first three of her seven points off the bench will arguably have the longest shelf life thanks to an assist from Santo’s pipes.

“Yeah, it’s pretty cool,” Cale said.

“I’ve been dreaming of that since, like, fifth grade. It was awesome.”

Even the music operator pushed the right buttons during a breezy game.

Moments after the first quarter buzzer sounded, a concert version of Bachman

Turner Overdrive’s “Takin’ Care of Business” blared over the PA system.

Geneva (9-0) ostensibly accomplished that feat without stereo accompaniment in the game’s first 2:30, cruising to a 9-0 run on 4 of 5 shooting.

Overall, the Vikings opened on a 21-0 run and saw seven players score in the first quarter. Missing a few players because of illness or injury – including top guard Jennifer Deegan – Glenbard North (4-6) didn’t register a field goal until the 1:18 mark on a Sarah Petzold layup.

It was 26-6 Vikings after eight minutes. Glenbard North shot 2 of 8 from the field in the quarter to Geneva’s 9 of 16, struggling to cope with the Vikings’ pressure and offensive efficiency.

“We definitely have a lot of guards who can step up. And posts,” Cale said.

“We have a good team this year. I’m excited about it. And we all support each other, which makes it a lot easier to go deeper in our bench.”

The Vikings shared pleasantries well after the game ended. Senior guard Kate Rogers, celebrating her birthday, distributed cupcakes. Classmate Emma Peters, a post, capitalized on her mom’s role as snack bar coordinator and scarfed a slice of leftover Aurelio’s cheese pizza.

It’s likely Peters would have enjoyed the perk no matter her performance, but the pie surely tasted better with a field goal and sound interior defense to

her name.

“It’s a lot of fun,” Peters said. “I mean, all the girls are great, and I’ve been playing with these girls since sixth grade, so they’re all my best friends.”

Starters Grace Loberg (10 points) and Abby Novak (eight) led the Vikings, as nine other teammates scored.

Senior forward Janie McCloughan wasn’t one of them, missing her fourth straight game with a mild concussion suffered late in a Dec. 4 victory at St. Charles North. Vikings coach Sarah Meadows said McCloughan had “probabably her best day” Wednesday, but she’ll err on the side of caution when it comes to her return. McCloughan still has not been headache-free.

Nevertheless, McCloughan displayed some athleticism in streetclothes, showing off dance moves to the Fall Out Boy hit “Centuries” as the halftime break wound down. Meadows suggested McCloughan’s personal intermission could last another few days.

The Vikings face a pair of struggling Upstate Eight Conference River Division foes – Streamwood and Elgin – on Friday and Saturday before beginning Montini Christmas Tournament play on Dec. 26.

“I have her in class [as a PE leader], and even tonight at the game, it’s Janie showing up,” Meadows said. “It’s her personality. She looks better. So I think she’s making progress, it’s just going a lot slower than we initially thought.”

The Cougars’ most recent former parent club announced its respective 2015 minor league field staffs Wednesday.

Kane County’s current affiliate plans to follow suit within the next few weeks.

Arizona Diamondbacks farm director Mike Bell said Wednesday that “we’re getting closer to be able to do that” as the front office prepares for the looming moves.

“We’re probably shooting for some time just after the first of the year,” Bell said. “We typically do it much earlier, but we’ve had some things shuffled Mike Bell around.”

Bell said the organization’s Class-A affiliation switch from South Bend to the Cougars was not causing the delay.

In September, South Bend and Kane County essentially traded player-development contract partners, with the Cubs leaving the Cougars after two seasons – including a Midwest League title run in 2014 – for the eastern reaches of their Midwestern fan base.

Arizona was aligned with South Bend since 1997, the only MWL affiliation it has known.

“Every year it’s different, though [with the minor league timetable].

There’s nothing set in stone,” Bell said. “Sometimes you’ve got it ironed out, you’ve got it ready to go.

But then ... there’s a chain event or a trickle-down, so you’ve got to deal with that.”

The Diamondbacks underwent a handful of front office changes in the offseason, including naming former major league right-hander Dave Stewart as general manager.

Bell said he could not speculate who might manage the Cougars in the organization’s 25th anniversary season, but there’s at least one candidate out of the running.

Mark Grace, a first baseman who spent 13 of his 16 big league seasons with the Cubs before finishing his career with Arizona, joined the Diamondbacks as assistant hitting coach in October.

In 2014, Grace was the hitting coach for Arizona’s Short-A affiliate in Hillsboro, Oregon, helping the Hops to the Northwest League title.

“It’s great for him,” Bell said. “I figured it was a matter of time when he was back in the big leagues, anyway.”

Former longtime South Bend manager Mark Haley will not return to the Diamondbacks system, electing to remain in South Bend to operate the new baseball academy adjacent to the club’s home field.

The South Bend franchise renamed itself “Cubs” from “SilverHawks” this offseason and will serve as main tenants of the year-round facility.

J.R. House, an infielder for parts of five big league seasons with Pittsburgh, Houston and Baltimore, managed Hillsboro for the past two seasons and could be in line for a promotion.

Beloit, Burlington, Dayton, Peoria and West Michigan have announced their 2015 MWL field staffs.

The Cougars open the season at 6:30 p.m. April 9 against Cedar Rapids.

MJ moving up: Mark Johnson, the Cougars’ manager from 2013 to 2014, climbed another rung in the Cubs’ organizational ladder when he was assigned Wednesday to Advanced-A Myrtle Beach.

A first-round draft pick of the White Sox in 1994, Johnson will be based closer to home than he ever has been during his managerial career. The Warner Robins, Georgia, native spent two seasons with Short-A Boise before coming to Kane County.

The 2014 MWL manager of the year, Johnson earned a nod as Baseball America’s minor league manager of the year this month.

Pitching coach David Rosario and assistant hitting coach Chris Gutierrez also ascended to Myrtle Beach after spending last season with the Cougars.

Whew: In addition to Class-A Kane County, the Cubs switched affiliates at the Advanced-A and Short-A levels, leaving Daytona and Boise, respectively.

The Boise defection especially threatened to rattle Gary Van Tol, the former Hawks manager who has lived in Boise with his family since 2008. His wife, Chrissy, is a senior associate athletic director at Boise State.

Van Tol could exhale with this week’s assignments. He will remain in the northwest, managing the Cubs’ new Short-A club in Eugene, Oregon.

ELGIN – Batavia forward Chasen Peez went wild in the fourth quarter Wednesday night, scoring 18 points in the final 8 minutes of the Bulldogs’ Upstate Eight Conference River game at Larkin.

But the late stages of the game offered minimal solace for Peez and the Bulldogs, who fell to the host Royals, 71-58.

Peez was hard on himself for waiting so long to find his groove, scoring all but four of his game-high 22 points in the fourth quarter.

“Not playing hard the whole game,” Peez said.

“Picking and choosing when I want to play hard, I guess. I really need to mentally commit myself to the whole game and Chasen Peez not just the fourth quarter. I’ve been doing that a lot for some reason.”

Batavia coach Jim Nazos assessed the 6-foot-7 Peez’s night more charitably.

“He does a lot of nice things, and I really think his best basketball is still ahead of him this year,” Nazos said.

“He’s had some games where he’s put up some numbers, but I think he can do a lot. … That fourth quarter could be a microcosm of what a whole [game] could be.”

Batavia’s first road game of the season slipped from the Bulldogs’ grasp during a third quarter in which the Bulldogs were outscored, 21-9, putting the visitors in a 49-33 hole entering the fourth quarter.

Batavia committed seven turnovers in the quarter.

Larkin is known for its defensive pressure, but Nazos thought much of his team’s woes were self-inflicted.

“They speed you up a little bit,” Nazos said. “But I thought we had some bad turnovers that were unforced that were just some poor decisions.”

But Peez helped keep the game interesting late, notching a trio of 3-pointers among his fourth-quarter outburst. One of those brought the Bulldogs to within 60-52 at the 2:46 mark but the Bulldogs came no closer.

Defensively, the Bulldogs had difficulty corralling Larkin’s big men, with sophomore Christian Negron (15 points) and senior Daniel McFadden (14) each doing their share of damage in the paint.

“Negron’s long, McFadden’s strong,” Nazos said. “Nice punch there.”

Larkin coach Deryn Carter is enthused by the way the burly McFadden has progressed.

“He’s doing everything right on and off the court,” Carter said. “We’re proud of where he’s at. He got dinged up, hurt his shoulder or bicep so he had to sit the fourth, but he’s a force down there.”

Batavia (5-4, 1-4 UEC River) trailed by only four at halftime, 28-24, thanks largely to the Bulldogs’ free-throw shooting (8 for 8 in the half) and foul trouble for Negron, which kept him on the bench for most of the second quarter. Canaan Coffey’s 3-pointer off a Jacob Roberts assist sent the Bulldogs into the locker room on an upbeat note.

For the game, Batavia was 19 of 20 from the line, with a late Peez miss finally denting the Bulldogs’ perfection.

Coffey made all six of his free throws en route to a 14-point night for the Bulldogs, who return home Friday against Elgin, the same night Larkin (7-3, 4-1 UEC River) visits St. Charles North.

In the Saints’ lone loss against St. Joseph, Gentry was scoreless during the first quarter before finishing with 23, and he was held to two first-quarter points en route to scoring 24 in the Saints’ first meeting with St. Charles North. The second North meeting was much the same – three points in the first quarter, 21 for the night.

HITTING REWIND Somewhat lost in Saturday’s muchhyped matchup between Geneva and St. Charles East – in which East star Cole Gentry and Geneva counterpart Nate Navigato each scored 29 points – was a dynamic performance by Vikings big man Loudon Vollbrecht.

Vollbrecht turned in one of his best performances of his career, scoring 23 points, including a pair of dunks, one of which beat the first-quarter buzzer to give his team a 19-15 lead.

COMING ATTRACTION After posting blowout wins against Streamwood and Elgin last weekend, North will have a chance to measure up against a tougher conference foe Friday when Larkin visits St. Charles.

Given the North Stars’ limited size, defending Larkin forward Christian Negron could require some creativity.

Friday’s postseason pairings announcement revealed DeKalb, Batavia, St. Charles East and St. Charles North will join host Geneva in an IHSA Class 4A regional in March.

With East and Geneva (one loss each) seemingly in the early stages of excellent seasons, it could be construed as a rotten break to be lumped together in regionals, but Saints coach Pat Woods said he wasn’t disheartened – or surprised.

“I talk with (coach) Al Biancalana out at DeKalb,” Woods said. “He and I like talking hoops a lot, and we predicted exactly what it was. I’m fine with it. I think if you look record-wise at how we’ve had success with the teams that are in it, I don’t care who we play, we have to beat four teams to [win a sectional], so it doesn’t matter who we play.”

The Saints struck first against the Vikings on Saturday, winning the teams’ first conference meeting, 77-69, in St. Charles. Woods is keeping the win in perspective.

“I think it was important in the conference race,” Woods said. “I’m not putting too much stock into it. … I think we’ve been tested a lot with our schedule, and it starts right away with our Thanksgiving tournament. I think that prepares us for big games like [Saturday] that we’re going to see down the road.”

Geneva is guaranteed another shot at East on Feb. 5 in Geneva, and by then, the Vikings hope to have senior guard Pace Temple back from injury. Temple is the lone returning backcourt member who logged heavy minutes on last year’s Vikings who made a Class 4A sectional final.

A third and even juicier meeting in a regional final also is a legitimate possibility given the postseason draw.

For now, however, the focus remains the conference race, and East (4-0 Upstate Eight Conference River) is the last remaining unbeaten in conference play.

“The gauntlet has been put down,” Geneva coach Phil Ralston said after Saturday’s loss. “Now it’s time for us to respond. It’s as simple as that.”

Now those same players are finding out Cutler has been benched from more leaks to the national media. It is hard for me to accept that this is the smartest move in light of that reaction.

When asked Wednesday whether he believed he’d succeeded in getting the most out of Cutler, Trestman responded, “I think that’s evident I haven’t, up to this point. Am I working at it? Yes. But we’ve seen moments, but we haven’t done it on a consistent basis. I can’t hide from that. I haven’t been able and we haven’t been able to do the thing that we want to get done. I’m trying to give you the most truthful answer, and that is we’ve seen moments of it, but it’s not where we need to go. It’s not where we need to be.”

But he gave absolutely no indication Cutler would be benched and seemed to indicate the opposite when asked to comment on broadcaster Jon Gruden’s suggestion he should have gone to Clausen on Monday night.

Several members of the media tried to help Trestman lay blame on Cutler, his body language and performance, but his answer was, “Part of this discussion is all about the way we played on Monday night, and I understand that. We

We lost because our team lost, and we didn’t coach as well as we can coach, and they played better than us. Those are the most important reasons, and certainly we want to focus in on the quarterback.

But the reasons why we lost go far beyond interpretation about somebody’s looks. When they’re 5-9, nobody’s happy about that.”

It’s impossible to believe it came without Emery’s input.

Could it be either Emery, Trestman or both believe they can save their jobs by having Clausen jumpstart the offense, thus justifying the release of Cutler, the digestion of $38 million worth of dumb and thus convincing ownership all will be well if they are brought back for another year of chaos without the “evil QB?” If so, they’re even dumber

or more out of touch with reality than we thought possible.

Before a move like this, you have to both ask and answer the question: What positive of any kind can come out of it? If there is one, I just don’t see it.

At some point, this clown show has to stop.

For reasons that are unclear to me, Marc Trestman elected to give his players an extra day off Wednesday, confusing his apparent belief that by going overly easy on his players it will make them play better with the job of being a head football coach.

What are they doing now?

Is there anyone out there who actually believes the Bears as a team or any individual player would have performed better Monday night if Clausen had been under center?

Does anyone really believe Clausen has a future as the starting quarterback of the Bears?

Is there some misguided perception at Halas Hall that players, coaches and fans will somehow be satiated or even pleased by the punishment and public shaming of Cutler?

ADVICE Open adoption could help grandmother Dear Abby: I am writing this in response to “Un-Grandparent in Ohio,” whose pregnant teenage daughter has decided to place her baby for adoption.

My daughter and son-in-law adopted their newborn daughter in an open adoption. Each summer the adoption agency sponsors a picnic that is attended by birth and adoptive parents, grandparents and other family members – and, of course, the adopted child. During the rest of the year, our daughter sends the birth mother photos and letters, going through the same agency.

I can only imagine the sadness Un-Grandparent is feeling. I hope her daughter has chosen an adoption agency like this one so she will be able to share in her grandchild’s life. – Grateful Adoptive Grandmother Dear Grateful: I welcomed feedback from readers about that

Breast- or bottle-fed, babies’ eating habits start early Dear Doctor K: I’m pregnant and am getting a lot of pressure from family and friends to breast-feed. I’m not ruling that out, but I’d like to know what the research shows about the benefits of breast-feeding.

Dear Reader: Breast-feeding can be a contentious issue. On the one hand, there’s no question that breast-feeding is healthy for babies. But some mothers prefer not to breast-feed, and others simply can’t for a variety of reasons.

So, how much difference does breast-feeding make to a baby’s health? A series of articles recently published in the journal Pediatrics gives us an idea.

The studies updated earlier studies, published in 2008, that examined infant feeding practices from birth through 12 months.

The new studies followed up with the same moms and children six years later. Here are some of the findings: • Prolonged breast-feeding (several months) and delaying solid foods led to fewer ear, throat and sinus infections. But it had no effect on colds, lung infections or urinary infections.

• Prolonged breast-feeding and delaying solids didn’t change whether children were likely to

• Breast-fed babies have slightly healthier diets later in childhood. However, they are just as likely to eat sweets and snacks as children who were bottle-fed.

• Infants who were given sugar-sweetened beverages in infancy had twice the risk of obesity as older children and adults.

• If babies don’t eat many fruits and vegetables, they are less likely to eat them when they are 6 years old.

• If babies were bottle-fed (either with formula or pumped breast milk), their mothers were more likely to try to get them to finish their food when they were 6 years old.

The bottom line is that good – and bad – eating habits start early. It’s less a matter of breast-feeding versus bottle-feeding. It’s more about starting healthy eating habits right from the start. For instance: • Don’t give children juices or sugar-sweetened beverages.

• Start giving fruits and vege-

tables when children are babies, and not just in baby food from jars.

• Food should be properly cut into pieces smaller than the size of a pea. Pieces of solid food larger than that can get stuck in a baby’s windpipe.

• Don’t give a baby nuts, popcorn or hard candies.

• Sticky, gooey foods such as gummy candies, marshmallows and even peanut butter can be hard for a baby to swallow.

Avoid giving them.

• Don’t make children finish their food, whether it’s a bottle of formula or the food on their plate. Letting them listen to their own hunger cues can help prevent future obesity.

On that last point, if I wanted to leave the table before finishing what was on my plate when I was a kid, my mother would say, “Remember the starving children in India.” Fortunately, I’m not obese. I think it’s not in spite of my mother’s advice; I think I just inherited good genes from my two slim parents.

Two months ago, my grandfather died and my grandmother came to live in our house, and since the moment she moved in she has made my life miserable.

This made me so mad that I called her a “stupid old woman.” This bothered her because she started crying, left the table and went into her room and shut the door.

Now I really feel terrible. I went to her room and told her that I was sorry, but she said to “jump in the river and drown myself” and then slammed the door. In today’s deal, how should South declare in four hearts? West leads the diamond two. East wins with his king and tries to cash the ace, but South ruffs.

North’s two-diamond cue-bid showed three-card or better heart support and at least game-invitational values. (In contrast, a jump raise to three hearts would have been pre-emptive, indicating four hearts and a weak hand.) Declarer started with nine top tricks: one spade, six hearts and two clubs.

If the opponents had retained a respectful silence during the auction, South might well have drawn trumps and hoped that West had either the club queen or spade king. Now, though, it was likely that both of those cards rested in East’s hand – although West might have held the club queen.

South played a heart to dummy’s jack, cashed the club ace, ruffed a diamond in his hand and cashed the heart ace, happy to see the nice break. Then declarer played a club to dummy’s king.

When the queen did not drop, South ruffed dummy’s last diamond and exited with a club. East took the trick, but was endplayed.

A spade lead would have been away from the king, and when he tried a club, South discarded a spade from his hand and ruffed on the board.

If West had won trick nine with the club queen and shifted to a low spade, South would have let East win the trick with his 10 or jack.
