7 ways to avoid holiday weight gain PARK PERSPECTIVES Natalie Seidel Just one week until Christmas, and my pants are already feeling tighter.

Sugar cookies, hot toddies, Graham’s chocolates and Coca-Cola in glass bottles are just a few of my favorite things – and in abundant supply this time of year. Should I be watching all those extra calories? Bah, humbug!

Christmas without these necessary indulgences wouldn’t be Christmas at all.

So, I say, don’t be a Grinch – dig in! The Geneva Park District offers plenty of opportunities to get active and burn off that extra eggnog in the coming weeks.

• Ice skating – weather permitting, ice skating is available a Wheeler Park.

According to the Mayo Clinic, skating at a moderate pace can burn more than 500 calories per hour. Bundle up, grab your skates and create lasting winter memories on the ice with family or friends.

• Work it out over winter break – before 2014 group fitness classes begin, the Stephen D. Persinger Recreation Center will offer winter break fitness classes, Dec. 23 through Jan. 4. Instructors will lead motivating, hourlong morning workouts, such as TurboKick, Zumba and Spin Intervals for just $5 each ($7 for nonresidents).

• Hike in the snow – Peck Farm Park’s rolling

Chance to explore outdoors Kane County Certified Naturalists program offers nature-centered education

There’s still time to sign up for the Kane County Certified Naturalists program, which starts in January. The cost to join is $250 and includes six core classes, three field trips, 15 hours of additional coursework and 15 hours of volunteering or additional coursework.

t. Charles resident Suzi Myers said she considers joining the Kane County Certified Naturalists a life-changing experience.

Through the program, she helps out at the Kane County Forest Preserve District’s Maple Sugaring Festival – one of her favorite volunteer opportunities, she said.

“I usually work at the tapping, and to see the kids see the sap come out of the tree, see how watery it is and see it cooked down to the thickness of real maple syrup … that’s always fun to see their little eyes,” she said.

Myers was a member of the first Kane County Certified Naturalists program – a yearlong program that trains naturalist volunteers and offers opportunities to learn more about the area’s natural history and ecology.

The program is a partnership between the St. Charles and Geneva park districts and the Kane County Forest Preserve District.

Pam Otto, manager of nature programs and interpretive services at the Hickory Knolls Discovery Center, a facility of the St. Charles Park District, is one of the Kane County Certified Naturalists instructors. Otto writes a column that appears weekly in the Kane County Chronicle.

“Most people who sign up for the class are curious about what’s in their backyard,” she said.

Those who join go through six weeks of courses centering on a new topic each week, such as earth sciences, geology, weather and climate and aquatic ecosystems. They are required to take a certain amount of “Learn from the Experts” courses that are offered through each partner agency. The group goes on several field trips each year to areas such as woodlands and creeks, where they catch crayfish.

you’re 65 as when you’re 5,” Otto said.

The program culminates with a certificate, which Otto said carries a lot of weight with nature-centered agencies in Kane County. She said the program gives people a good foundation to volunteer as an instructor at various agencies or to teach children about nature when the park districts host school functions.

manager of the Geneva Park District’s Peck Farm Park, said many Kane County Certified Naturalists volunteer at the park’s Butterfly House.

“I just think that probably the overriding thing is that people don’t realize we have all these great things in their backyard,” she said.

Otto said Kane County Certified Naturalists often are surprised to form friendships through the program,

and Myers said she noticed that.

“The people you meet become your friends because you have a common interest,” Myers said.

Otto said many members also make important connections about nature in Kane County. Before joining the Kane County Certified Naturalists program in 2007, Kimberley Haag said she didn’t realize how crucial Kane County’s native plants were.

Haag said that fact inspired her to add all sorts of native plants in her own yard in Campton Township.

“Learning about native plants and prairies and how crucial that is to the survival of the species – whether it’s

insects, animals or birds – [is] an absolutely crucial thing to help species of all animals survive,” she said of the fact that surprised her most while in the program.

Spreading awareness of the “treasures” in Kane County’s natural areas is one of the program’s many benefits, said instructor Valerie Blaine, nature program manager for the Kane County Forest Preserve District.

“By people learning more about the natural world, it leads to more appreciation.

It leads to more caring and a sense of stewardship,” she said. “KCCN definitely raises awareness and appreciation. … You’re never too old to learn.”

Myers agrees.

“If people are sitting on the edge and wondering if they should get into this program, get off the edge and just jump in,” she said. “It’s a phenomenal program. You’re constantly learning. You take a little more ownership of the facilities that we have.”

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Julia Davies had backed her Tesla Model S into a parking space on the fourth floor of the St. Charles parking garage Monday so she could demonstrate how to use the garage’s newest amenity – an electric car charger.

Davies, of St. Charles, was on hand for a ribbon-cutting ceremony, along with two representatives from local dealerships who showcased a Chevy Volt and a Nissan Leaf, to celebrate the new charging station going live. She showed a small crowd how she plugged her car in and explained that her Tesla could travel as many as 300 miles on one charge.

She said she and her husband, Gregg Yedwab, brought up the idea of installing a charging station with the city of St. Charles because they didn’t know of any existing

charging stations in the city.

“It’s not so much that we need a charging station in downtown St. Charles,” she said. “But the whole electric car community out there knows they can come out and shop while they’re charging.”

The charging station – a ChargePoint brand – is connected to a mobile application that tells electric car owners where the nearest charging station is and whether it’s in use. Two cars can be charged at a time and vehicles are limited to two hours. Each charge costs a few cents, which the city of St. Charles pays for, so electric car owners can charge their vehicles for free.

The charging station cost about $13,000, and a grant through the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity will help offset about $6,500 of the cost in the form of a rebate, St. Charles Electric Services Manager Tom Bruhl has said.

Longest Night Service set for Thursday

With Christmas songs on the radio, holiday concerts on television and performances of “The Nutcracker” on local stages, December is a very musical month. It’s no different at Waubonsee Community College. We just finished our end-of-semester concert season, with our steel band, chorale, woodwind ensemble, jazz ensemble and rock band all performing over the past few weeks.

Music is not confined to a particular month here on campus though. Any day you can stroll through Von Ohlen Hall at our Sugar Grove campus and hear an array of music. There is a rich variety of music taught here, including composition, audio production, piano, guitar, brass, woodwinds, steel drums, violin, organ, string

instruments, percussion, vocal and several credit and noncredit music appreciation classes.

Last month, we were happy to host the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference Jazz Festival, which saw eight community colleges from the northern Illinois area getting together to learn and perform. Four well-known musicians, including Richie Cole, Brian Finn, Larry Gray and Vern Spevak, served as judges and performed a special evening concert with Waubonsee’s jazz band, directed by Jeff Ford.

In addition to campus concerts, our ensembles also perform throughout the region and the country. The steel band, directed by Frank Check, has been very active in the community, playing at the Swedish Days parade in Geneva, the Fourth of July parade in Aurora and for students at local middle and high schools.

Children’s theater to present holiday program ST. CHARLES – Steel Beam Children’s Theatre, 111 W. Main St. in downtown St. Charles, presents its annual holiday show, “Sing Along with Santa.”

It features a short, interactive musical play, followed by visits with Santa. Marge Uhlarik-Boller of Elgin directs this year’s play “Elves on Strike,” written by her and Kate Quan of Wheaton.

There will be audience participation and goodies for the children.

Performances are on Saturdays and Sundays through Dec. 22, and reservations are suggested, as this show usually sells out.

Dr. Mark Lathan, also takes part in community music making, performing regularly at Wesley United Methodist Church in Aurora, the annual Lifelong Learning Institute luncheon and the Illinois Choral Directors Association Choral Festival at Harper College each April.

The jazz band has performed in 12 states over the years, and – this April – it will travel to Eau Claire, Wis., to compete in a national jazz festival. Waubonsee has won several first place awards in past competitions, most recently at the jazz festival at the University of Nevada in 2011.

Just as our ensembles have won awards, so, too, have our faculty members.

Geneva resident Gibby Monokoski, professor of music/instrumental, recently received the Fox Valley Orchestra’s first-ever Champion of the Arts award for his dedication to the arts and arts education. The orchestra also

named the principal percussion chair in his honor.

Our faculty is proud to open all its students up to new sounds and new possibilities – whether the students are serious musicians heading for lives on stage or simply heading for lives as appreciative listeners.

Among those Waubonsee alumni making a career in music is Ashley Lewis, who is known for her bluegrass vocals and mandolin work with her band, Ashley Lewis and Legacy. She writes, “Sound is fleeting, like life, it lasts only an instant, so we must learn to live in the moment, long for the next note and love the journey of our song.”

Police to crack down on drunken drivers KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com CAMPTON HILLS – Campton Hills police are about to crack down on certain traffic violations, such as drunken driving.

Beginning Friday, village police will participate in the annual statewide “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign, according to a Campton Hills Police Department news release.

The enforcement period ends Jan. 5.

Police Chief Dan Hoffman said in a release that his officers will be aggressively looking for impaired drivers during the crackdown period and will arrest anyone caught driving drunk. Those violating seat belt laws also will be ticketed.

“You’ll see us making lots of stops during this highly visible enforcement period, and if we suspect anyone is driving while intoxicated, officers will show zero tolerance for drunk driving,” Hoffman said.

Data indicates the holiday season is a particularly deadly time because of the increased number of impaired drivers on the roads, according to the release.

“The December holiday season is the ‘most wonderful time of the year,’ and we are going to keep our roads safe for travelers heading to visit friends and family,” Hoffman said.

The crackdown is supported by national and state paid advertising, creating a comprehensive campaign to curb drunken driving during the holiday season.

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – The organizer of a loosely formed group opposed to the Batavia School District 101’s proposed $73 million tax levy said she will seek the replacement of board members after they unanimously approved the levy Tuesday night.

“We’re going to try to recruit and replace school board members,” Sylvia Keppel said after the vote.

Keppel, who started a website, www.lowerthelevy.com, was among those who spoke

against the proposed levy during a hearing before the vote. Keppel and others have posted 100 “Lower The Levy” yard signs across the city. A few residents spoke in favor of the levy.

Board member Jon Gaspar said lowering the levy would result in cuts to programs and larger class sizes.

“My best interest is for the success of this district,” he said.

School board members approved a $73 million levy, up from last year’s $66 million extension.

As proposed, the owner of a

home valued at about $230,000 would see taxes decrease by about $28 next year. School district officials pointed out that neighboring Geneva School District 304 is expected to increase taxes by $300 next year for the owner of a $315,000 house and that St. Charles School District 303 is expected to increase taxes by $295 next year for the owner of a $300,000 house.

Assistant Superintendent for Finance Kris Monn has said this year’s levy will need to be large enough to capture all of the equalized assessed value returning to the dis-

trict’s tax base from the expiration of Aurora’s tax increment financing district No. 2, which includes the Chicago Premium Outlets mall in Aurora and significant industrial properties in the Interstate 88 corridor.

“The projected EAV from these properties is just above $92 million,” Monn said.

“Without these properties, our levy request would have been approximately 1.6 percent higher than last year, not the 12.92 percent we are recommending with the TIF properties returned.”

ZORA ALEXANDER TURNBAUGH Born: June 7, 1921; in Peoria Died: Dec. 14, 2013; in Asheville, N.C. GENEVA – Zora Alexander Turnbaugh, 92, a longtime Geneva resident, died Saturday, Dec. 14, 2013, in Asheville, N.C. She was born June 7, 1921, to George and Anna Alexander in Peoria. She majored in journalism at Western Illinois State Teachers College. In 1942, Zora married Dr. Roy C. Turnbaugh, later Geneva’s superintendent of schools from 1965-1986. He predeceased her in October 2005.

Zora spent most of her adult life as a homemaker devoted to her family, the comforts of home, entertaining and cooking for friends.

She had a deep and abiding love for classical music and was an omnivorous reader. Beginning in her mid 50s, she worked at the East Room of the Third Street shops in Geneva, later becoming a buyer. In the process, she gained a loyal following of customers who appreciated her impeccable fashion sense and integrity. Zora was known among family and friends for her generosity, her kindness, her quick wit, her

gifts of food, her love of company, her spirited discussions of politics and her devotion to her church.

She was a member of the Geneva Lutheran Church and the P.E.O. Sisterhood.

Zora is survived by her son, Dr. Roy C. Turnbaugh (Donna) of Weaverville, N.C.; her daughter, Dr. Anne Turnbaugh Lockwood of Portland, Ore.; two grandchildren, Andrew (Elizabeth) of Grayslake and Peter (Jessie) of Somerset, Mass.; and two great-granddaughters, Isabella (Andrew and Elizabeth) and Hazel (Peter and Jessie). She is also survived by her sister, Anita Heuermann; and many nieces and nephews.

eschelkopf@shawmedia.com ELBURN – Photographer Jan Baumgartner has created a winter wonderland in the comfort of her own home.

Baumgartner recently built a holiday-themed studio as part of her photography business, which is based in her home in the Nottingham Woods subdivision near Elburn.

The holiday studio is currently available by appointment only.

The studio includes several white Christmas trees, a decorative model train and artificial snow.

“I’m trying to create an experience that doesn’t depend on the weather,” Baumgartner said. “As much as I like real snow, and I love being outdoors, it’s not my favorite place to try to stage a shoot.

The kids get cold, and sometimes you have the snow and sometimes you don’t. I like to try to bring the outdoors in.”

studio as bringing a new dimension to her photography, and she has tried to make the display realistic as well as whimsical.

“There are snowflakes, for example, that are hung from the ceiling at different distances from the camera,” Baumgartner said. “I try to create a sense of depth.”

She started her photography business in 2009 after graduating from the Massachusetts-based Hallmark Institute of Photography. Before that, Baumgartner worked in Waubonsee Community College’s marketing and communications department for about eight years.

“I began the business really from scratch,” Baumgartner said. “I didn’t have a lot of capital to put into it. I kind of had a tough go at the beginning.”

ELBURN – A new car dealership recently opened in Elburn that specializes in “niche” vehicles.

Tom Scardamaglia, owners of Windy City Muscle Cars, said while the dealership has a physical location in Elburn, he considers his business an Internet-based warehouse dealership.

“People that are looking to purchase my vehicles know exactly what they want,” he said.

The business opened about a month and a half ago at 217 Paul St. in Elburn and can be found online at www.windycitymusclecars.com.

One of the cars in Scardamaglia’s inventory is a 2013 Bentley Continental GTC convertible that previously was owned by actor Nicolas Cage, he said. He said he has both new and old cars, including a 1969 Camaro Z28, a 1966 Dodge Coronet and a 2007 Mustang

He said he’s been in the car business for many years and said owning his own specialty car dealership has been his passion. He said he spent nine years selling Toyotas, which eventually became boring.

But that background gave him plenty of connections to the car industry, he said.

“I have access to hundreds of thousands of cars at wholesale every day, as far as the new stuff,” he said. “I follow up on leads from people – friends of friends, family members, other people in the business. I’m constantly searching for cars for the niche market of cars I’m trying to specialize in.”

In addition to car sales, Scardamaglia said he also offers inside and outside car storage, appraisals, and disassembly and final assembly.

WINNING TEAM Horse, rider, owners work together on championship

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com CAMPTON TOWNSHIP – Five years ago, John McGuire set out to acquire a horse “that could do absolutely everything.”

McGuire, now 71 years old, said he “looked all over the country,” but couldn’t find the perfect fit, until he saw some footage of a mare named Saphira. He teamed the horse with local rider Heather McCarthy, and he said he knew he had his winning team.

Saphira now is 9 years old, and McGuire, his wife, Marilyn Johnson, and McCarthy know they have a winner.

Saphira was honored as the United States Dressage Federation’s Dressage Horse of the

Year at the fourth level.

The next goal? The 2015 Pan Am Games.

The horse resides with McGuire on his property in Campton Township, near Elburn. McGuire, once an NFL draft pick, selected by the Baltimore Colts, likens his team to a football franchise.

“Heather is my Tom Brady,” he said. “I’m the coach, and my wife is the owner of the team.”

And there is Saphira, who McGuire called “spectacular.” He praised the mare’s “cool and calculating demeanor” and said Saphira and McCarthy were a perfect team.

“She has a following around here, and Heather has a following,” he said.

She competed at the U.S. dressage nationals with two horses – McGuire’s Saphira and Sandro Paix, owned by Sandi Chohany. She’s been competing in championships for years, and the whole endeavor has been something she has been a part of for years. She said she has been working with horses for most of her life.

“I can’t remember my life before horses,” McCarthy said. “I’ve been riding since I was a really little girl.”

McGuire said he had known her since she was 12, and “she never lets you down … she gives it her all.” He said he considers her to be part of his family. He said he

chose to compare her to NFL star Brady, a two-time Super Bowl MVP, because she delivers when it counts most.

“She knows when to go for the long bomb or the short pass,” McGuire said. “She rides to win. … I think you should always play to win.”

He said he has confidence that she could achieve that in any situation, and he said in Saphira, McCarthy “has got a NASCAR that is capable of beating everybody in the race.”

“Heather, at some point, is going to beat everybody in this country,” he said, adding that “she has the capability and the brains to reach the highest levels.”

McCarthy said the Pan Am Games would be “a realistic goal for me. … It’s something that is in my sight.”

She said she would like to compete at the international level, and she said she would love to be in the Olympics someday.

“That’s every girl’s dream,” she said.

Sugar Grove welcomes new finance director

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – The village will welcome a new finance director, Pat Chamberlin, who will begin her official duties Jan. 6, village officials said.

Sugar Grove trustees approved an agreement with Chamberlin at their Nov. 26 meeting. Her salary will be $93,500.

With 12 years of experience, Chamberlin has extensive knowledge in the areas of budgeting, auditing, analysis, payroll, utility billing and debt management, as well as a back-

ground in risk management.

Chamberlin currently is working as the city finance manager for the city of Belvidere, a Boone County city, about 12 miles east of Rockford.

“I’m definitely excited.

They are on the forefront of a lot of things I have an interest in,” Chamberlin said of Sugar Grove. “They received the Government Finance Officers Association award for their budget and audit, and I want to continue to receive those important awards.”

Chamberlin said when she worked in the finance department for the city of Rockford from 2000 to 20005, the city re-

ceived the government finance recognition every year.

“I am looking forward to working for a growing village and serving the residents of the community,” Chamberlin said.

Village President Sean Michels said officials were confi-

dent that Chamberlin would be a good complement to the village and to its management team.

“With her extensive finance background, I think she’ll be a real asset to the village and a part of our team,” Michels said.

Chamberlin earned bachelor’s degree from Millikin University and an MBA from the Illinois Institute of Technology.

Furthermore, many are totally influenced by powerful, monied lobbies to whom they cater rather than the beleaguered taxpayer who elected them. The cost to us for career politicians is incalculable, not only in real dollars but also in ineffective or no legislation. “We the people” are suffering, and many in Congress don’t even care.

They don’t want to risk being re-elected, rather than taking a stand on serious problems without regard to “party,” but rather loyalty to this great nation to preserve democracy and ensure its people the prosperity and protection they deserve.

Make no mistake – term limits will fairly effectively eliminate those who want a career at taxpayers’ expense and attract many who truly want to serve and improve this country in the traditions of its history.

Many have died for this country. Senators and representatives, how many of you are willing to fall on your sword for this country and those you’re supposed to serve?

Presuming too much about level of American privacy THE WASHINGTON POST The bulk collection of phone “metadata” by the National Security Agency – records of who’s calling whom, when and for how long – is a potentially powerful tool that could, if abused, reveal sensitive facts about nearly every American’s life.

The practice, disclosed by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, demands extensive checks to guard against misuse. The government has said its oversight process already is strong. To varying degrees, a federal judge and a task force appointed by President Barack

Obama now have disagreed.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the task force, which was set to submit a sealed report to Obama over the weekend, would like to see a higher legal standard applied before the government can access phone records. It reportedly proposed an end to the bulk collection of records, instead calling on the NSA to approach phone companies and ask for records as investigators need them, on a case-by-case basis.

Government officials have seemed open to considering this arrangement but have voiced concern that investigative speed may be lost in the

interest of privacy protection.

To make such a case, they will have to do better in demonstrating the national security benefit of the program. On Monday, U.S. District Judge Richard J. Leon signaled skepticism on that score as he issued an injunction to prevent the bulk collection. He stayed his action to give the government a chance to appeal, but he expressed the view that the government was likely to lose its legal case. He ruled that the NSA, in maintaining a running five-year phone-records database, likely is in violation of the Constitution’s Fourth Amendment

restrictions on unreasonable searches.

Rejecting the applicability of a 1979 ruling that offered no constitutional protections to metadata, Leon argued that Americans’ relationship with technology has changed drastically now that cellphones and tablet computers are so ubiquitous and powerful. The government’s ability to collect information in bulk and hold it in perpetuity changes the context decisively from the 1979 case.

Moreover, he wrote, the government provided far too little evidence to show that its collection has proved valuable; in none of the three

examples the government cited was immediate access to phone records necessary.

Without a more convincing account of its value, Leon wrote, he could not find that pressing national interests outweighed the reasonable privacy concerns.

The NSA’s activities will continue to be litigated in court and in the court of public opinion. If the government is to emerge from Snowden’s revelations with the authorities that officials insist are crucial, it will have to do more to demonstrate why they are essential and how Americans’ privacy is being protected.

To the Editor: There is no question that our federal government is virtually ineffective in critical ways as a governing body. Everyone, be aware that our federal debt is now $17 trillion – that is a 17 with 12 zeroes after it – which many taxpayers don’t know how to write, let alone comprehend the cost to themselves and their children for many years to come.

There is only one way to correct this – Congress has to spend less money for many years than the government has coming in.

Congress needs to get some guts and enact legislation that will help achieve this end. For example, enact an effective term-limits bill. Senators should only be allowed to serve two terms of six years each, and representative should be allowed to serve only three terms of two years each.

Right now, there are no term limits, which allows congressional wannabes to make a career out of being a senator or representative, along with a guaranteed paycheck, medical, retirement and other benefits no private sector worker has (un-

Not Mooseheart’s Mangisto Deng. Deng tries to make lifting and pushups part of his pregame and even halftime routines. On Tuesday, the South Sudan native provided evidence that nontraditional methods can work for certain players, flashing a smooth jumper throughout Mooseheart’s 96-53 pummeling of Harvest Christian.

“Before the game, I actually work out for a little bit,” Deng said. “When I play, I feel much better, I feel like I have a lot of energy. … If I didn’t work out for a little bit or do pushups, I feel like I’m not strong enough to shoot the ball.”

Mooseheart coach Ron Ahrens said Deng’s weight-training regimen is made easier before home games, such as the one Tuesday.

“It must loosen him up,” Ahrens said. “We’re doing some band work and he’s doing some lifting and, man alive, he’s come out and shot the ball really well, and he’s shot the ball really well here, which has been nice.”

The 6-foot-7 Deng counted numerous jumpers – including a trio of 3-pointers – as part of his 32-point outburst.

He had 22 points at halftime, by which point the Ramblers (6-2) had doubled up Harvest Christian, 52-26.

Mooseheart power forward Makur Puou – who stands 6-10 – had 25 points, 11 rebounds and seven blocked shots, including a signature sequence early in the fourth quarter when he swatted a shot before running the floor and finishing with a powerful dunk on the offensive end.

Remarkably, the 7-1 Nyang isn’t the tallest kid in the

A 7-3 freshman, Bol Riek, hangs with the team but does not project to play basketball at the school based on more stringent IHSA transfer protocols that went into effect in the aftermath of an investigation last year into the arrivals of Nyang, Puou and Deng at Mooseheart.

Ahrens said Riek’s arrival demonstrates Mooseheart is not interested in luring promising athletes for the sake of on-court success.

“Regardless of what the

IHSA says, our mission is still our mission,” Ahrens said. “We’re going to bring in kids, we’re going to give them a good education, we’re going to give them a nice place to live, we’re going to get them outside of a dangerous country such as [South Sudan]. … We’re going to do what we do. I guess we’re proving our point.”

The Ramblers will take their customary extended holiday break before returning to action Jan. 7 at the United Center against Gage Park.

Rich Martin, president of the Illinois High School Lacrosse Association, said many more schools have agreed to play by IHSA rules, but a faction of those programs would not go the extra step of agreeing to sign up for an IHSA state series, which came with additional fundraising hurdles.

“It’s created a convenient loophole for some schools to opt out and stonewall the progress of high school lacrosse,” Martin said. “I think the coalition of them are probably saving their district some money or saving their program some money but they’re also holding the rest of the league back. A lot of that has to do with financial considerations, but some of these schools have been playing for 10-plus years.”

Martin, however, places most of the blame for the stalled progress of high school lacrosse in Illinois on

the IHSA. “I think the IHSA should just kind of read the tea leaves, say 90 teams are playing, either we’re going to do it or not,” Martin said.

“We could get to 120 teams out there and still have this loophole and still not have them sponsor the state tournament.”

It doesn’t bode well for lacrosse becoming a mainstream high school sport when a community like St. Charles isn’t on board.

While Geneva was among the schools ready to take the plunge on the boys side (Kafer said there is not enough female participation for a girls team), St. Charles East and St. Charles North were part of a bloc of schools that decided they were not ready to support the transition.

Considering St. Charles is an affluent community with a strong foothold of lacrosse participation and success at the club level, the district’s reluctance to commit to fielding official, high school teams speaks to how far the sport still has to go.

St. Charles North boys lacrosse coach Sean McCaffrey said more of a “transition period” is required, although the sport’s popularity can no

longer be considered a new development.

“That’s just kind of the state of the economy in Illinois,” McCaffey said. “The state defaulted on a lot of things and [school districts] don’t have the budget. I know the Naperville schools and a lot of schools are owed tons of money from the state, so that played a huge factor for us.”

In the news release Monday, IHSA executive director Marty Hickman said “We remain very confident that lacrosse will become a sanctioned IHSA sport in the near future. The number of schools competing in the sport has continued to grow.

However, we also know that financial restraints have prevented many schools from committing to the sport and believe it is in the best interest of the schools, and the sport, to wait until we reach the previously established benchmarks before beginning a state series.”

St. Charles East athletic director Mike Sommerfeld wonders if the IHSA could expedite the process if it took a less conditional approach.

“I think if they just said ‘It’s going,’ it would force schools to think ‘Well, a lot

of kids are playing it,’ ” Sommerfeld said.

Kafer noted that school districts would not necessarily have to pay the full freight to officially add lacrosse programs, with options such as participation fees and fundraising available to help lessen the burden.

But Sommerfeld said the St. Charles district likely would have to contribute “thousands of dollars” toward the programs, adding that the district also has space concerns.

“If you can give kids opportunities to do something, that’s what you want to do,” Sommerfeld said. “That’s why all of us are here, so from that aspect, that part is disappointing. But there are a lot of questions that need to be answered, big picture-wise.”

Most of those questions have been circulating for much of the past decade.

Whether schools are any closer to finding answers is up for debate.

shoulder injuries during his career – quirkily enough, all stemming from games against Larkin, according to Miller.

For however long the 6-foot3 Miller is sidelined, Poulin said it likely will take a combination of several players to make up for the athleticism, rebounding and defensive prowess that Miller supplies.

“It creates an opportunity for some guys that have been working really hard, like Tyler DeMoss, Johnny Davern, Brendan McCarthy – we’ve got a handful of guys that have been putting time in and are anxious

to get on the court for extended periods of time,” Poulin said.

Extra rest for Ludwig aside, Poulin said he is glad to play Friday.

The Upstate Eight Conference does not schedule boys basketball games on Fridays as consistently as some other conferences.

“That’s just the way I remember [high school basketball], and how I would prefer it,” Poulin said. “We’ll play whenever they tell us to play, but if I had my choice, I’d have Friday games whenever possible.”

The path to transition lacrosse from a club sport to an IHSA-sanctioned high school sport continues to be winding, and it’s testing the faith of the sport’s proponents.

On Monday, the IHSA announced boys and girls lacrosse will not include an IHSA state series in spring 2014, the latest setback in what has been a frustratingly fluid timetable for those eager to see lacrosse take on the same structure as mainstream high school sports.

“I really thought it was going to become a reality two years ago and then when it didn’t, I still thought it was just a matter of time before it happened,” Geneva athletic director Jim Kafer said.

“And now, I’m not so sure, because it’s hard to say what position schools will take as far as whatever type of program they have, whether it’s a club or just loosely affiliated with the school or whatever. I’m not as optimistic now as I was as recently as six months ago.”

St. Charles North’s blueprint for success during Tuesday’s girls basketball game against Crystal Lake South sounded elementary enough even if the team hadn’t recognized youth players before tipoff.

As the North Stars followed through after a tight first half, their grins and the path to a 68- Sean 60 victory only Masoncup widened.

“We definitely just start out mellow,” junior forward Nichole Davidson said, “and then Morgan once we get the Rosencrants hang of it, we start playing as one and our strengths show up more.”

North (5-6) trailed, 31-30, at halftime, remaining close despite a Crystal Lake South rebounding edge keyed by senior forward Sara Mickow’s game-high 20 boards.

While North’s pep band performed “I Saw Her Standing There” during an early timeout, coach Sean Masoncup found himself yelling the title of another Beatles song more often.

Shouts of “Get back!” greeted a number of North Stars lapses to return to the defensive zone as the Gators worked the ball upcourt in transition. A 43-27 advantage on the glass allowed Crystal Lake South (8-5) plenty of chances to try, at least in the early going.

“We realized that we can’t double-pressure on the ball and keep pressuring the ball in the backcourt,” North sophomore forward Morgan Rosencrants said. “We needed to get back on ‘D’ so we wouldn’t get beat.”

Attacking the basket and defending with more even aggressiveness after the break allowed North to open the third quarter on a 9-0 run. Davidson, who finished with a game-high 21 points, scored seven points in that span.

Rosencrants wasn’t far behind, scoring 14 of her 20 points after halftime. Ashling Davern was next with 17 points, darting up the floor to follow plays after contributing a handful of steals.

With the North Stars (25 for 55, 45 percent) outshooting the Gators (20 for 57, 35 percent), any quick burst proved even more crucial.

“They came out and they just matched our intensity and took it to us there for a little while,” Crystal Lake South coach Kyle McCaughn said. “We went toe to toe with them for the better part of that first half, but, boy, they made a nice run there at the start of the third quarter, and we just didn’t respond.”

North overcame a double-double from Mickow, who tied Chanel Fanter for the team lead with 16 points. Kianna Clark added 12 points, including a runner that dropped just before the final buzzer.

By then, North knew it was about to exhale with a victory. Masoncup praised the team’s decision-making down the stretch as “just being heady.”

“Once we realized that we were up, we just kept going,” Rosencrants said. “We needed to build on our lead.”

“Every year, you kind of feel a different dynamic, and every girl wants it more than anything this year,” senior point guard Liza Fruendt said. “We’re all just very tied together, and it’s just a different dynamic.

Everyone works so hard every single day, and when you have 11 girls working hard every single day, good things are only going to come out from it.”

Batavia carried only eight players on last season’s team but still prospered, jumping from 13 victories to 18 while challenging for the UEC River crown until late in the season.

Fruendt and senior center Erin Bayram – best friends since elementary school – pledged to make the most of their final campaign together during summer workouts. Committing to NCAA Division I programs just before the season – Bayram to Boston University, Fruendt to Missouri State – only stoked the urgency.

“Honestly, since we’re such a young team, we have fire in our belly,” Bayram said. “We want to prove that we’re the team to beat, and we just want to go out there every game and have fun and just enjoy.”

Batavia has zoomed to a 3-0 start in UEC River play, including its first victory against Geneva since the 2007-08 season.

BC seeks earlier bursts While Burlington Central enters next week’s Dundee-Crown Christmas Tournament with a 9-0 record, the Rockets have had to be resilient more often than coach Mark Smith would like.

BC recovered from sluggish starts against Hampshire and Rockford Christian last week, but is hoping to keep cruising behind more even play.

“We’re looking for some consistency,” Smith said “We’re starting off games a little bit slow, and you can’t do that at Dundee-Crown. We’ve got to hopefully learn our lesson.”

In addition to the Rockets, who won 27 games and reached a Class 3A super-

sectional last season, top competition at Dundee-Crown includes Barrington, Evanston, New Trier and Prospect.

In your face Natasha Brown’s eye-popping rebounding totals haven’t been the only constant during Aurora Christian’s early-season surge.

Harassing – and fluctuating – defense also has helped the Eagles win seven of their first 10 games entering this week.

Aurora Christian has allowed no more than 48 points in its current four-game winning streak.

“The defense is starting to come together again,” Eagles coach Jerry Tokars said.

“We’re usually a pretty strong defensive team. Our defense is once again showing its colors, which is good.”

Aurora Christian always has played a combination of defenses under Tokars and continues that trend, showing looks in man-to-man, man-press and zone-press depending on matchups and situations.

I think I made a lot of improvement. Last year I was a little bit undersized and this year I feel like I’ve gotten a lot bigger and stronger, and I feel like my shots have gotten a lot better.

How big were those matches last week against Leyden and Geneva?

It was my first week back. I wasn’t completely in shape. I was just pretty happy to get the fall, but I feel a lot better now. I think I kind of got back in the groove.

If you had to pick one teammate to help you with some difficult homework, who would it be and why?

Because of injury, St. Charles East sophomore D.J. McDermott made a belated season debut last week, and wasted no time making his presence felt at 120 pounds, scoring wins by fall Thursday against Leyden – East coach Jason Potter’s former program – and Friday against Geneva in a match that loomed large in the Upstate Eight Conference River race. McDermott then won another match against Antioch on Saturday before taking his first loss against Cary-Grove.

McDermott, the Kane County Chronicle-St. Charles Bank & Trust Athlete of the Week, spoke with Chronicle sports editor Jay Schwab about his hot start. The following is an edited transcript:

ELGIN – Wood bowling lanes often pose a double challenge to those going toeto-toe with them.

St. Charles North girls bowlers proved quick studies during Tuesday’s 2,809 to 2,090 victory against Larkin at Elgin Lanes, which offers a wood – not synthetic – setting.

After rolling an 864 in their first game, the North Stars kept climbing, eventually producing a season-best

1,019 in Game 3.

“The girls are doing an amazing job of adjusting to their conditions, and that’s a big difference between this year and years past,” North coach Lindsay Madej said.

Bobbi Jo Buhlman (590) and Mari Elias (564) scored the top series for North, while Lynn Byers’ 245 was the team’s high game.

North’s team score also was its best for a dual this season.

“We’re right where we want to be right now,” Madej said.

Idris Elba talks about playing Nelson Mandela in ‘Long Walk to Freedom’

By ED SYMKUS More Content Now When “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom,” the warts-and-all dramatic look at the life of Nelson Mandela, premiered earlier this year at the Toronto International Film Festival, the charismatic British actor Idris Elba (Stringer Bell on “The Wire”), who stars as Mandela (also known as Madiba), was there with the film, talking about how he went about portraying the early days of the South African president.

The film is currently scheduled to open across the U.S. on Christmas Day (though the release date might be moved up). Due to the recent death of Mandela, it was decided to run the interview, which was conducted on Sept. 10, now.

Ed Symkus: You never got to meet Nelson Mandela because of his health problems during production. How did you go about capturing the essence of the man for the role?

Idris Elba: We built Orlando (where

Mandela and his family lived in Soweto) on a stage, from every single detail.

So, Idris stepping into the shoes of Mandela was aided by the fact that I was completely surrounded. It was a 360 set.

My early preparations involved me actually going to South Africa and staying there and understanding and just being an observer. I began to feed off that. Everywhere you turned, anybody you talked to could talk about Mandela in some way or form.

So, I would really just soak that up.

We were working with people there who had been through the struggle.

But there were also people who were younger than the struggle, and had just heard, and their reference of Mandela is a different reference.

So, it was an energy thing. I just plugged into the energy of Mandela and the way people respect him. And I think that helped me craft my performance.

ES: Were you at all nervous about playing such an iconic person?

Did you have any qualms about including those aspects of his character?

IE: We were very keen to portray Mandela as a man, as a human being, and that included some parts of his life that might not be as flattering as we might think. That was an important part of the performance for me.

We’ve seen the saintly Mandela that we all know and love, but I think it was important for us to explore and take the audience on a journey prior to that.

I’m 41, and it was around that age that he became an activist, but he’d lived a very full life prior to that.

And when you understand that, you understand how long of a walk that freedom is.

For me, as an actor, that was a challenge. I didn’t want to deface Mr. Mandela in any way, but I didn’t want to portray him in a way that wasn’t honest. I think we achieved it gracefully and honestly. It was important that we had both sides of the character, the good and the bad.

Use teen’s motivation to help him stop smoking Dear Doctor K: I recently discovered that my teenage son is smoking. How can I help him quit?

Dear Reader: Parents can do many things to help their teens quit smoking. First and foremost, if you smoke, stop. It will be hard for your teen to take you seriously if you’re telling him to do something you won’t do.

If you did smoke and have already quit, talk to your son about your experience. Discuss the challenges you faced when trying to quit. You may have noticed that teens often believe they are both immortal and invincible.

They often believe they can quit smoking whenever they want. But adolescents often spend less time than adults mentally preparing to quit smoking. That can reduce the chances that they will succeed.

Teens are also more likely than adults to act on impulse and discount long-term consequences. You may have noticed that, too. As a result, you may need to spend extra time educating your son about why it’s important to stop smoking.

Provide specific advice about how to avoid situations where peers might be smoking, and discuss what he will do when the

Ask your teen why he is smoking, and what you can do to make quitting possible. If your son is smoking to relieve stress, suggest that the two of you play some games (ideally, athletic, but computer games are OK, too) a few times a week to burn off steam in a healthy way.

Another strategy is to take advantage of your teen’s motivations. What things are really important to him, and how can quitting smoking help him achieve those things? Teenage boys, for example, may be more likely to try to quit smoking if they want to participate in school sports. If that’s the case, emphasizing the physical benefits of quitting may help.

There’s no sport that doesn’t require healthy lungs for maximal performance. Your teen may not connect smoking to diseases like lung cancer and heart attacks that generally occur decades later.

But smoking is damaging your son’s lungs now: He is not getting

enough oxygen into his blood, or removing enough carbon dioxide waste from his blood. That will negatively affect his performance.

If his sport is basketball, and he is as gifted as LeBron James, his smoking may not matter. But if he is a normal kid, it may matter a lot.

In another example, if a teen is smoking in order to stay thin or lose weight, he or she should be given information about nutrition and exercise along with stop-smoking strategies.

When your son tries to quit, be ready for the mood swings and crankiness that can come with nicotine withdrawal.

If you are not making progress, look into stop-smoking programs for teens. Smoking cessation programs can help teach behavioral techniques to manage temptations.

Finally, ask your son’s pediatrician whether quit-smoking medications are an option. These include nicotine replacement, bupropion and varenicline.

Dr. Wallace: I’m planning to have a Christmas theme party at my house, and seven couples will be invited.

We will have lots of food and much laughter.

Dr. Wallace: I’ve got a very unusual problem and I need all the advice I can get.

I’m really not a very popular guy; I’ve only been dating for three months, and I’ve only dated two girls.

Both of them attend my church. I’ve gone out with girl No. 1 about five times and I’ve dated girl No. 2 seven times. I really like both girls a lot and want to continue dating both of them.

The problem is that they both want me to drop the other one, and they each told me that if I didn’t drop

Dear Mother: All schools that are staffed with dedicated instructors and permit the students to study and learn in a safe, comfortable environment can be considered superior, be they private or public.

Dear Abby: A couple of years ago, my husband informed me that he likes to dress in women’s clothing. Since then he has read books, is seeing a counselor, and the reality is, he is transgender.

He now wears his hair long and has long fingernails.

I have tried to be understanding and have gone places with him when he is dressed as a woman.

He has met other transgender people who have either made the full transition or are content without it. I allow my husband time with these new friends without me.

I have reconciled with these activities and I’m OK with them so far. But I have told him that if he decides to change his gender to female, I will not be able to be married to him. He’s on hormones at the moment and has told me he plans to start testosterone blockers.

Bidding a slam without blackwood

There is an old saying that real bridge players don’t need Blackwood. Of course, before bidding a slam, Blackwood of one ilk or another is often used. But on some deals it will not help, and the partnership needs to employ control-bidding (cue-bidding).

Look at this deal. South opens two clubs; North responds two diamonds, not being quite strong enough for a two-heart positive with that relatively weak suit; South rebids two spades; and North raises to three spades, promising a smattering of points.

(Some players would make a four-club splinter bid, showing the singleton, but I like fourcard spade support for that action.)

Now, if South uses Blackwood, he learns that his partner has one ace – but he does not know if it is the useless heart ace or the invaluable diamond ace. Instead, he makes a four-club control-bid, showing a first-round club control (ace or void), expressing slam interest, and asking partner if he has a suitable hand. North, with a terrific hand, makes a four-diamond control-bid.

Now South, wondering about the club situation, control-bids four hearts. And when North control-bids five clubs to show his second-round control (king or singleton), South leaps majestically to seven spades.

South ruffs the heart lead, cashes his club ace, ruffs a club in the dummy, returns to his hand with a trump, ruffs the club queen, carefully ruffs a heart in his hand (does not play a diamond!), draws the last trump and claims.
