Kaneland board race taking shape MAPLE PARK – At least three incumbents and three newcomers will be running for election to the Kaneland School District 302 Board, according to paperwork filed through Tuesday afternoon.

Candidates will be running for four available seats on the board in the April 7 consolidated election.

Gale Pavlak, the board’s secretary, is among those who have filed. Pavlak is an Elburn resident. Also running for re-election will be Sugar Grove residents Tony

KANELAND CONNECTION Al Lagattolla Valente and Peter Lopatin.

Teresa Witt, the board’s vice president, has not yet filed for re-election. Candidates have until Monday to file. Also running for the board will be newcomers Ryan Kerry, Dan Nagel and Jerry Elliott. Kerry is an Elburn resident. Nagel and Elliott both live in Aurora.

Elburn board candidates In the filings for the Elburn Village Board, two candidates have filed for the three open board seats, both incumbents.

Trustees Bill Grabarek and Dave Gualdoni will be running for re-election. One more seat is open, that of Craig Swan.

Swan was appointed to the board after board member Ethan Hastert resigned because he was moving to Campton Hills. At the time of his appointment in early

November, Swan had said it was unlikely that he would run in the April election.

Village President Dave Anderson had said he selected Swan, in part, because he did not want to give another candidate “a head start.”

Anderson had said he heard from three residents who had been interested in the open seat.

Police investigate stolen mail

Lane closures planned for several area roads

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Police Department has an open investigation into several pieces of stolen mail, the department announced Monday in a news release.

At about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, officers were dispatched to the area of Blackhawk Trail for a suspicious person possibly stealing packages from door steps, the release states. The caller stated that he approached the person and then called the police.

The person drove away in a black-colored Jeep, striking a mailbox and post, as well as brushing the caller with the vehicle, according to the release.

Officers found the black Jeep and made contact with a 21-year-old St. Charles man in the area of 1500 East Main Street. The man was questioned and subsequently arrested on suspicion of battery, the release states.

long to the man. At this time, there appears to be about 12 to 15 victims of mail theft that the department had been able to identify as of Sunday.

The case still is under investigation, and as of Tuesday, no other charges have been filed in connection to the incident, said Lisa Blackwell, St. Charles police department spokeswoman.

Anyone who has additional information about this incident, or who has any mail or packages missing, is asked to contact St. Charles police at 630-377-4435 and ask for Officer Sheets.

According to a news release from the Kane County Division of Transportation, traffic will be reduced to one lane for geotechnical soil borings and pavement cores at these locations this week, weather permitting: Bunker Road from 1,000 feet south of Keslinger to the LaFox Metra Station; Keslinger Road from 500 feet west of Bunker Road to 1,200 feet east of Bunker Road; and LaFox Road beginning at Dillonfield Drive and extending south for 1,000 feet. KANELAND’S NEW LEADER Contract for incoming District 302 Superintendent Leden starts July 1

UGAR GROVE – Todd Leden received warm applause Monday night, as he was introduced as the next superintendent of Kaneland School District 302. His sons, Andrew and Evan, led the crowd assembled in the Pledge of Allegiance at the board meeting at Kaneland Harter Middle School in Sugar Grove.

Leden, 47, was unanimously approved by the Kaneland school board. The Geneva resident currently is the principal and associate superintendent at Fenton High School in Bensenville.

From 1997 to 2004, he worked in Geneva School District 304, where he was a teacher and a coach.

When he decided he wanted to become a superintendent one day, he said he thought of some places that might make sense.

“I thought someplace like Kaneland would be perfect,” Leden said, adding that it’s a good fit because it is a kindergarten-through-12th-grade district, which appeals to him.

The Fenton district is a high school district, though he said he also would have been pleased to eventually be a superintendent at Fenton, as well.

At a meeting with the community last week, Leden said the Kaneland job was the only superintendent position he had sought.

Leden has a doctorate in education from Aurora University. He earned a master’s of education in educational leadership and athletic administration.

Cheryl Krauspe, president of the Kaneland school board, said she was happy to welcome Leden to the district.

Krauspe said Leden will make a base salary of $175,000. She said it is a three-year contract.

His contract starts July 1, and he will spend the remainder of this school year at Fenton as the district works toward completion of a major construction project.

“I believe that he is the one who will lead us to the next level at Kaneland,” Krauspe said. “I believe the foundation is there, and I

believe we are going in the right direction. But I believe it’s going to take a strong leader to pull it all together.”

Leden said he will stay informed of Kaneland issues and will attend district events and school board meetings.

The district still has the services of Renee Goier, the interim superintendent. Goier is under contract for 100 days with the district, and Krauspe said she has 53 days remaining.

“We will stretch those days,” Krauspe said. “We will be frugal with her time.”

Leden was joined at Monday’s meeting by his

wife, Jennifer, in addition to his sons. His daughter, Lexi, was unable to attend.

Leden said he is familiar with the area, since he has a sister who lives in the Kaneland district. He said he has been to the district’s schools several times. He said he lives on the west side of Geneva, and he is close to Kaneland schools.

Krauspe said Leden will be “rock steady.”

“He’s got a vision,” she said. “He’s got the drive for improvement and to add rigor. But he’s relational. He is a communicator. He is a collaborator. He’s approachable.”

Leden said he is not concerned about reports he has heard about board members clashing at meetings. He said he would “not want to judge” the situation until he had an opportunity to see it in action.

“I do get the newspaper, and I have seen people share comments,” Leden said, adding that “every board is different, and every board has a different makeup.”

ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – Investigators as of Tuesday afternoon have not yet determined the cause or origin of a fire that caused an estimated $200,000 in damage at a St. Charles Township home, fire officials said.

The occupants of the home at 6N021 Oak Run Court in St. Charles Township were making arrangements to live elsewhere Tuesday morning because the building sustained smoke and water damage, said Greg Benson, chief of the Fox River and Countryside Fire/ Rescue District.

No one was injured in the incident, which the district first received as a report of a structure fire at a large two-story home at about 12:54 a.m. Tuesday, according to a district news release.

Upon arrival, firefighters found a large amount of fire coming from the garage area and into the living space above the garage, the news release states. The fire also had ex-

$150,000 of property damage and $50,000 of damage to the contents.

An investigation is being conducted by the Kane County Fire Investigation Task Force, with support by the Kane County Office of Emergency Management command van.

8 New police cars coming

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ELBURN – The Elburn Police Department next year will replace two of its current squad cars with new vehicles, thanks to a purchase approval from the Elburn Village Board.

The board unanimously voted Monday to approve buying two new Ford Interceptor Utility squad cars in an amount not to exceed $71,414.36, Village Administrator Erin Willrett said on Tuesday.

The squad cars will replace a 2008 squad car and a 2009 squad car, Elburn Police Chief Steve Smith said.

The delivery date of the new cars will occur by early

March at the latest, Smith said on Tuesday. They should be in use by the end of March after usable equipment from the current squad cars is transferred over, he said.

Beginning with this purchase, the police department plans to follow a structured vehicle replacement plan that will involve replacing a squad car or two every year, Smith said.

“We try to take very good care of the squads that we have, but they are used a lot by a lot of different people and there’s a lot of wear and tear on them,” Smith said.

The Elburn Police Department currently has six cars for patrol duty and two utility vehicles, Smith said.

JAMES R. STROTHER Born: June 21, 1919; in Lancaster, KY Died: Nov. 5, 2014; in San Diego, CA James R. Strother of Indianapolis passed away at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, November 5, 2014, at the Canyon Hill Senior Home in San Diego, California at the age of 95.

He was born June 21, 1919, in Lancaster Kentucky to the late Rev. Clarence and Nell (Compton) Strother. He attended school in New Albany, IN. and graduated from the University of Louisville with an engineering degree in 1941.

After graduation, he married his high school sweetheart, Geraldine Thompson, on May 17, 1941, and moved to Indianapolis to begin a career with General Motors where he helped design and test experimental aircraft engines for WWII fighter planes.

Mr. Strother spent the next 40 years developing and promoting practical applications and industrial uses for gas turbine engines with various companies. He traveled extensively, both nationally and internationally and made many round-the-world trips.

Mr. Strother was a member of the Central Baptist Church and enjoyed singing in the Choir. He was an avid music enthusiast and delighted in listening to local jazz groups when not relaxing at home with a good book.

He was generous man who donated over 4500 hours of volunteer time and over 9 gallons of blood to local blood banks.

Preceding him in death was his wife, Geraldine; and a brother, David B. Strother.

Surviving are 3 children, Vicki Woolley of Batavia, IL, David T. Strother of Lafayette, IN., and Capt.

James M. Strother of San Diego, CA., and a brother Dr. Edward S. Strother of Muncie, IN. Also surviving are 7 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren.

Northern Illinois University geologist Reed Scherer, an Elburn resident, will ring in the new year in the Antarctic.

Scherer in the next couple of weeks will head there as part of a team of scientists who will drill through about a half-mile of Antarctic ice to investigate the grounding zone where the West Antarctic Ice Sheet on land meets the ice-covered Ross Sea. They are working to predict the effect of climate change on rising seawaters.

As part of the expedition, Scherer will be looking at microscopic fossils from plankton that used to be living in the ocean base, before the ice filled it. He will be there for about a month, until February.

“We can find from these fossils when there was open water in the past, and a lot about the conditions when the ice was smaller,” Scherer said. ‘What we’re trying to do, of course, in the big picture, is figure out whether the ice is retreating now, since now we have the evidence from the fossils that the ice has disappeared before in the past. We know that the basic state of the ice is relatively unstable, and we want to know whether there is much of a potential human influence over the future of the ice sheet with continued warming.”

Joining him will be Ross Powell, also of Elburn, who is the project’s chief scientist.

The work is a continuation of the work they did as part of an expedition in the 2012-13 winter season.

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Incumbent 5th Ward Alderman Tom Simonian filed nominating papers Tuesday, seeking a two-year term in the April 7 consolidated election.

Others who filed for alderman in Geneva were incumbents 3rd Ward Aldermen

Dean Kilburg and Mary Seno, and 5th Ward Alderman Craig Maladra.

Also filing were Pat Lenski for the 1st Ward and James Radecki and Eleanor Hamilton for the 4th Ward. Radecki had previously served as alderman.

Lenski’s term on the Geneva Park Board is up, and he confirmed Tuesday that he is not looking for another term on that board, but rather a term on the City Council.

The term of park board member John Frankenthal also is up. A spokeswoman said no one had filed for either term.

The Geneva Public Library board has one two-year term and four four-year terms that are up.

Incumbent Zachary Craft filed for the two-year term, while incumbent Robert Shiffler and newcomers Ellen Fultz-Schmid and Dana Hintz filed for the four-year terms.

Four people filed to run for three four-year seats on the Geneva School District 304 Board.

They are incumbents Mary Stith and Kelly Nowak, and newcomers Taylor Egan and Evelyn Schneider.

The filing period continues until 5 p.m. Monday.

Roads, bridges, tunnels should matter to Americans

By NOAH SMITH Bloomberg News It’s almost a cliche at this point – the United States needs to spend more on infrastructure. Other countries are running circles around us in the infrastructure department. It’s fashionable to blame this on the Republicans’ scorched- earth tactics against President Barack Obama, and on conservative distrust of government spending in general. And those are certainly factors.

Problems with state and local government finances are another issue.

But there is a third factor many people ignore: America’s abnormally high infrastructure costs.

As in the health care industry, we pay through the nose but get very little bang for our buck.

A recent example is the price tag of the World Trade Center Transportation Hub in New York. The new train station’s cost has soared to double the original estimate, now almost at $4 billion and still climbing.

That’s $4 billion.

For a train station.

If you think that’s an isolated example, think again. Blogger Alon Levy has compiled an amazing list of rail projects in the U.S. and other countries, and found that U.S. costs are much, much higher than those of other rich countries. For example, New York’s East Side Access project in Manhattan and Queens – connecting the Long Island Rail Road to Grand Central Terminal – has cost anywhere between $4 billion and $8.1 billion a kilometer (six-tenths of a mile) of rail line. The 7 train

subway extension to Manhattan’s west side has cost about $1.7 billion a kilometer. By comparison, Tokyo’s Toei Oedo subway line cost only about $350 million a kilometer. A train line in Denmark, by the way, cost only about $170 million a kilometer.

If we don’t figure out how to bring these costs down, we’re going to continue suffering from subpar infrastructure and all the economic problems that result from that – slower growth, lower productivity and impaired urbanization.

What are the reasons for the insanely high costs? As with health care, there are a lot of causes. Blogger Scott Beyer rounds up a few suspects. These include: 1. The Davis-Bacon Laws, which mandate high wages for infrastructure workers; 2. Government-labor

agreements that mandate the hiring of union workers; 3. “Buy America” laws; 4. A torturous environmental review process that is used by opportunistic landowners to drive up the value of their property; 5. The Transportation Alternatives Program, which mandates things like bike lanes; 6. Mysteriously high administrative costs; and 7. Toll bans on most interstate highways.

Some of these seem more important, some less, but three main themes emerge.

First, we force up wage costs intentionally. Second, we value the pocketbooks of landowners more than other countries. And finally, we have a more inefficient bureaucracy.

The first of these is something that conservatives and

libertarians should want to attack, since they are generally opposed to unions and to wage floors. The second is something that liberals should want to curtail, since boosting property values isn’t on any liberal’s to-do list.

And the third is something that should appeal to third-way moderates who want to make American government more efficient.

Infrastructure is reaching the point where it’s too important to be used as a political football.

As with health care, we can no longer afford not to cut costs.

Brown wraps up achievement-rich career STC North product ready for Huskies’ bowl game next week against Marshall

eKALB – Ryan Brown versed himself in whirlwinds even in the earliest stages of his Northern Illinois football career.

Nearly five years ago, as a high school senior, Brown visited campus as a football recruit before rushing home to play in a St. Charles North boys basketball game.

NIU’s Mid-American Conference rival, Western Michigan, also coveted Brown then, wanting the lanky, 6-foot-6 offensive line prospect to grayshirt.

He ultimately redshirted as a preferred walk-on with the Huskies, but no matter the color that precedes Brown’s name, he sees everything accompanying his final collegiate game clearly.

“It’s crazy, you know.

It seems like just yesterday, I was leaving North,” said Brown, who’ll start at right tackle in next week’s Boca Raton Bowl against Marshall. “You know, time really does fly when you’re here. It seems long when you do it, but when you look back, it was a short time, so it’s crazy.”

Brown briefly entered reflection mode after NIU beat Bowling Green for the MAC title earlier this month, the final touches on an 11-2 regular season that triggered the Huskies’ seventh consecutive bowl appearance.

He remembered shuffling along the line as a tackle on both sides before settling in as the starter at right tackle for all 13 games this season, gaining a deep understanding of football along the way.

He recalled meeting up with his older brother, Patrick, then a Miami Dolphins offensive lineman, when NIU made its landmark trip

Brown left North with a reputation as a soft-spoken big man in both his varsity sports, albeit one who consistently made an imprint whenever he played.

Standing in a hallway outside the Huskies’ indoor Chessick Practice Center after a recent workout, Brown spoke with the same calm tones.

Although this wasn’t one of those instances, he’s exhibited a penchant for pumping up the volume through the years.

“He’s very talkative. He’s

evolved. He’s grown up a lot that way, and I’ve been with him from the start,” Huskies offensive line coach Joe Tripodi said. “I wouldn’t call him a shy guy around his guys, you know.

“All of us, you get us in our room, there’s no shyness. Outside, some of the bigger guys are a little quiet.

But, yeah, he’s a great leader. Not afraid to call people out. He’s not afraid to get after some of the young guys, as well as the older guys.”

Schroeder responded by sinking six straight free throws down the stretch as the North Stars held off a furious rally to win, 60-46, in an Upstate Eight Conference River Division boys basketball game.

“They made a nice comeback,” Schroeder said. “We

came out in the fourth with kind of no energy, but big players step up, so we stepped up and made free throws when it counted.”

Schroeder, who finished with 19 points, including a trio of 3-pointers, went 6 for 7 from the line, all in the final 1:42. Teammate Jake Ludwig jokingly claimed that Schroeder is a 99 percent shooter from the line, but Schroeder estimated he makes about 80 percent.

“Mike battles, and he’s a kid that you can trust in any moment,” North coach Tom Poulin said. “Mike’s been playing well, so we’re happy with what Mike’s giving us.”

Ludwig gave the North Stars (5-4, 3-1 UEC River) a game-high 28 points on 11 of

15 shooting. He singlehandedly outscored the Wildcats (2-5, 2-3) well into the third quarter as the visitors roared to a 4219 lead.

“I wasn’t really trying to assert myself that much,” Ludwig said. “My teammates found me when I was open, and we did a good job of driving and kicking, and our defense created our offense.”

But West Chicago stormed back into contention, using a 20-4 run to cut the gap to 4639 midway through the fourth quarter.

West Chicago’s Mike Biggs scored all 13 of his points during the streak, which ended when David Pozna scored on a layup off a Ludwig assist.

“You know a well-coached team is going to make a run,

and that’s what they did,” Poulin said. “I thought our defensive intensity dropped just a little and they got hot, and then they started believing.”

Ultimately for the Wildcats, the awakening didn’t come soon enough.

“In the second half, we decided to start playing basketball the way we know how to,” West Chicago coach Bill Recchia said. “The last two games, we came out here sort of not understanding that this is a varsity basketball game and the intensity that’s required at this level. They’re learning.”

Quinn Ricci had 11 points for West Chicago, while point guard Peter Dolan added 10 points, seven rebounds and seven assists.

Grace Loberg helped keep the Geneva girls basketball team unbeaten Saturday with a huge effort at St. Charles East, collecting 22 points and 17 rebounds as the Vikings remained atop the Upstate Eight Conference River Division. Loberg, the Kane County Chronicle-St. Charles Bank & Trust Athlete of the Week, spoke with Chronicle sports reporter Kevin Druley about the night. Here’s an edited transcript:

St. Charles North outfielder Jordyn Wolfe is known for her speed on the softball diamond, and she was just as swift in making her college decision.

Wolfe, a sophomore, recently committed to Louisville, becoming the latest among an impressive string of North softball players to choose a Division I college destination.

“I love how they they support their student-athletes, and they’re a top 25 program in the nation,” Wolfe said. “It’s going to be very competitive but I’m up for the challenge, and [Louisville has] great coaches, fabulous facilities and all the sports are competitive.”

Louisville took notice of Wolfe during a summer showcase in California as Wolfe competed with her travel program, the Beverly Bandits. She visited the campus in October, attending a Cardinals football game against Florida State.

“It was really nice,” Wolfe said. “My whole family went down there. We were on the field at the beginning of the football game, but more than that it was just the college experience, how it felt. The dorms were wonderful, everything was nice, clean, and I talked to my academic adviser and felt very comfortable with everything.”

Wolfe and her family made a return trip to campus over Thanksgiving weekend – on the down-low – to affirm their first impressions, and the trip solidified Wolfe’s choice. She chose Louisville over Illinois State, Northern Illinois and

Brown shuffled around the line as a result while gradually bulking up. He weighed about 255 pounds on the day he visited NIU in early 2010 and since has grown to around 300. Brown credits the persistent programs of Huskies strength and conditoning coach Brad Ohrt as well as a healthy intake of protein shakes for helping him maintain his bulk.

Huskies center Andrew Ness can attest to the plight of one of his best friends on the team.

“Oh, we give each other a lot of [garbage] about it,” Ness said. “We all call each other fat. But we all have trouble keeping weight on, so we all try and eat as much as possible and see if we can out-eat each other.”

No matter his measurements, Brown figures to register as a sizable luminary on one of his potential stops next summer. He’s heard North football coach Rob Pomazak, who was not with the program when Brown’s prep career ended, would like him to speak with players.

There’s lots of time between now and then – could Brown wind up in an NFL training camp like his brother, who’s now out of football?

– but Brown has no trouble keeping an open mind. His thoughts aren’t completely flooded with NIU flashbacks.

“We’ll see what happens, you know. I’m just trying to focus on this game, and if it happens, it happens,” Brown said. “If it doesn’t, I’ve been lucky to play here, [be around for] five championship games and got to go to five bowl games. So I have no regrets at all.”

BC boys basketball struggles at home KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE BURLINGTON – The Richmond-Burton boys basketball team dominated Burlington Central for stretches Tuesday night in a 61-48 Big Northern Conference East game.

R-B harassed BC with its 1-2-2 three-quarter court ball press, and forward Reggie Banks and center Joey St. Pierre staged their own personal battle in blocked shots.

Banks (6-foot-5) finished with seven, along with 15 points and eight rebounds.

St. Pierre (6-9) had six blocks to go with team highs of 18 points and 12 rebounds. “[The blocks] carried over to the offensive end, too,” Banks said. “We get more confidence, and it builds up the team. It’s really helpful.”

The last time R-B came to Burlington was one of its worst performances of 201314, a 70-46 loss in January.

This time, R-B seized control in the second quarter and led by as much as 16 points in the third quarter.

“It’s better to give than to receive is an old saying that we’ve all heard. So we’re focusing on teaching kids to follow God’s Word, and give what they can to others through service and kindness. It doesn’t need to cost money; kindness is free,” explains Terri McCormick, director of Development and Communication, Faith Christian Academy (FCA).

For the month of December, FCA is promoting R.A.C.K.: Random Acts of Christmas Kindness. Students in this Geneva elementary and middle school are encouraged to do something kind each day for another person in their community.

“There are an infinite number of toys, electronic games, and treats in today’s world. No matter how much our children have, they will always want more.” McCormick says. “We want to change this mindset and

raise awareness of caring and giving for our students. We aim to teach them to be thankful for what they do have, and to give to and think of others.

“We know that children model behavior from what they see others do. That’s why it’s important to run a program like this at school. We want students to learn together the value of helping others and bringing them joy,” McCormick says.

Expectations vary by grade, and each student is encouraged to participate. Young children are urged to say a kind word to another, smile, share a toy, draw a picture, or comfort a friend or family member.

The acts are listed and hanging throughout the school. The goal is to keep the generosity and kindness going indefinitely past the school corridors and into the homes and community.

Eagles show resilience Aurora Christian withstood a late flurry from Indian Creek in Saturday’s nonconference home win, its first game without leading scorer Kirsten Madsen, who injured her knee in the closing minutes of Friday’s practice.

Madsen underwent an MRI on Monday, and Eagles coach Burney Wilkie confirmed she tore her ACL and is out for the rest of the season.

“Just to get the win without Kirsten, it showed the girls life goes on. We can still do this,” Eagles coach Burney Wilkie said. “It was good.”

In the name of civility, there’s no need for “NO BOYS ALLOWED” signs at Batavia girls basketball practices.

Of course, there’s no longer a need for boys, either.

Two seasons removed from fielding a varsity team of just eight players – a deficiency that prompted the occasional intergender scrimmage – the Bulldogs welcomed 16 players this winter.

“It’s a totally different world just from the amount of girls,” Bulldogs junior forward Hannah Frazier said. “I think it’s nice having the confidence that you don’t have to worry about getting tired or in foul trouble or anything like that.

It is nice to have such a large bench.

Our practices are a lot easier now that we can scrimmage.”

Growth is a theme throughout the program.

Fourth-year Bulldogs coach Kevin Jensen, also a math teacher, recently crunched the numbers. In 2012-13, he said, the sophomore and freshman teams featured 11 and 13 players, respectively. Those figures now have expanded to 14 and 19.

That makes for a lot more crimson and gold on Batavia benches instead of the sore sight of strings of vacant chairs leading to the water or Gatorade cooler.

“It just gives us more competition, too, to fight for minutes in our games,” junior forward Shea Bayram said. “And just the atmosphere with everyone cheering each other on and stuff during games is just really great.”

Batavia won 13 games in Jensen’s debut season, then 18, then 21 in 2013-14.

Last season, the Bulldogs captured the program’s first regional title since 1990 and advanced to a 4A sectional final.

Jensen suggested the rosters could expand again in 2015-16, and finds winning isn’t the only ingredient fueling the growth.

“I’m hoping that girls all the way up and down the community are seeing that, that there’s a place for a lot of people in this program, which in the long run, is going to help us. Whoever it is,” Jensen said. “Eventually, those numbers are going to be a huge, huge deal for us. So I think somebody’s seeing it. Wins and losses, yeah, we want to win, but I hope we’re providing a pretty awesome experience for these girls, and that’s why we’re getting more and more coming and

Geneva stays sharp, defeats North Carey: Bowl practices like ‘stealing time’

ST. CHARLES – Bowling is one of those competitive team sports where a squad cannot strategize to thwart an opponent, it just has to play a little better.

The Geneva boys bowling team did just that Tuesday, beating St. Charles North, 3,078-2,977, at St. Charles Bowl.

In doing so, the Vikings spoiled the North Stars’ senior night for the first group of seniors that bowled for North coach Jeff Fett for all four years.

“You can’t play defense so you bowl steadily better and better. The team bowled well tonight,” Geneva coach Jordan Zimberoff said. “Generally, when we put up a 3,000plus team score at an away bowling center we are really happy. That means we averaged over 200 per guy per game so that’s a really good score.”

Fett saw some bright spots for North.

“Individually, we had we had some seniors that bowled strong 230s and 260s,” Fett said. ”Putting it all together in one match is another story.”

Geneva won the first and third games by scores of 999985 and 1,077-946. North salvaged the second one, scoring 1,046 pins to Geneva’s 1,002.

“I was happy to see a nice, close match,” Zimberoff said.

“I like to see competitive ones where kids are in it all the way to the end.”

“I have three bowlers tonight, Spencer Sharpe, Evan Schmidt and Mitchell Spencer that all bowled well – in the 600s,” Zimberoff added.

Spencer’s three game total of 635 edged out Schmidt for the match’s series high by one point. Sharpe’s threegame total was 630.

Spencer also had the game high score for the Vikings, bowling a 224 in the second

round.

North senior Nathan Ioriatti’s took North’s series high with a three-game score of 626.

In the first game, Ioriatti marked in the first nine frames. In the second game, after notchi ng a nine in the first frame, he earned a strike or spare for the rest of the game.

Fett singled out two other North seniors: Alex Kummet and Nick Coghill.

“Kummet finished strong, bowling 266 in the last game,” Fett said. “The score was the game high for the match.”

“Nick, another one of our seniors, started off real strong,” said Fett. “His first two games were in the 230s.”

Geneva returns to the lanes today hosting Elgin.

St. Charles North competes next Saturday when it takes part in St. Charles East’s Black & Blue & Orange Invite.

The Vikings also will bowl in the tournament.

This season, there are a whopping 76 Football Bowl Subdivision teams participating in bowl games. And for the seventh straight season, the Huskies are one of them.

It’s a chance to pad the season with one more win and enjoy some time in the sun. It’s also a good opportunity to get a head start on next season.

Each team that makes a bowl is allotted up to 15 practices. In NIU’s case this season, the Huskies will have 12 because of their early matchup against Marshall in Tuesday’s Boca Raton Bowl.

It’s a chance for younger players and guys who are redshirting to finally get in some legitimate reps, and get

a head start on next year’s campaign when they hope to compete for playing time. “[The practices are] huge, because this is really where you start your development for your young guys. This is really where you start that progression of getting them into the two-deep by the end of fall camp next year,” Carey said at Tuesday’s news conference at the Yordon Center.

“What I always call it, you’re stealing time, because usually you don’t get to work with these guys if you’re not in a bowl game.”

Celiac disease is a disorder in which the body can’t tolerate gluten. The gluten triggers an immune reaction, causing inflammation of the lining of the small intestine. In the short term, a person with celiac disease may experience gas, bloating, abdominal cramps and fatigue.

Celiac disease also can cause symptoms in parts of the body distant from the gut, including the brain, bones and kidneys. Over time, if the problem remains unchecked, celiac disease damages the small intestine so that it can’t properly absorb nutrients from food. This can result in diarrhea, weight loss, anemia, malnutrition, joint pain, osteoporosis and even infertility. (On my website, AskDoctorK.com, I’ve put an illustration showing the effect of

Diagnosing celiac disease generally requires a blood test and a biopsy. During the biopsy, a small sample is snipped from the wall of the small intestine and checked under a microscope for damage.

The treatment for celiac disease is a completely gluten-free diet. This stops the harmful immune reaction in the gut, and the symptoms the disease can have outside the gut. And it also allows the intestinal lining to heal.

We used to think of celiac disease as primarily involving children and being very severe.

And it can be. Even a crumb of food with gluten can trigger such massive diarrhea that a child can die of dehydration if he or she doesn’t get prompt treatment.

But as our tests for the disease have gotten better, we’ve recognized that the disease can produce much milder symptoms and can start later in adult life.

Gluten sensitivity is a recently recognized illness that is different

from celiac disease. We don’t yet understand it, and some doctors don’t believe it really exists. People with this condition have celiac disease-like symptoms but do not test positive for celiac disease.

These patients are often asked to remove all gluten from their diet.

If their symptoms improve, they are usually diagnosed with gluten sensitivity.

Gluten is found in foods such as pasta, bread, wheat cereals and many baked goods. It can also be in less obvious items such as sauces, soups, salad dressings, medications and candy.

Luckily, these days, more and more gluten-free foods are appearing on grocery store shelves.

And there are many alternatives for foods traditionally made with grains – everything from rice pasta to millet, quinoa or chickpea flour. I used to be a skeptic.

Today I encourage patients who think they may be gluten sensitive to try a gluten-free diet. And to stick with it if it makes them feel better.

Girls are 10 percent more likely to have eating disorders Dr. Wallace: I enjoy reading your column in our Goshen, Indiana, newspaper. Whenever you print a teen’s concern about eating disorders such as anorexia or bulimia, the teen requesting information is always a female. Do guys ever suffer from eating disorders?

What percentage of these anorexics are girls, and how many actually die from their eating disorders? – Nameless, Goshen, Indiana Dear Nameless: Guys also have serious eating disorders, but girls are about 10 times more likely to develop one.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, about 15 percent of all teenage girls who diet develop anorexia, and 20 percent of them die from it.

The large discrepancy between males and females can be traced to social pressure.

Our society frowns on overweight females while tolerating extra weight on boys. Many girls are preoccupied with their weight at an astonishingly young age, according to Stefanie Gilbert, who practices with the Metropolitan Psychiatric Group in Bethesda, Maryland. She found that, as early as first grade, some girls are expressing concerns about their weight and even engaging in eating disorder behaviors.

A research study at the University of Missouri found that 50 percent of all females have been on a diet at some point in their lives before entering high school. In some cases, parents have encouraged their daughters to go on a diet.

It’s not uncommon

’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace for parents to make crude remarks about weight to their young daughters (but rarely to their sons). This is extremely unwise. A University of Minnesota study suggests that girls with parents who make comments about their daughters’ weight are more likely to become depressed and go on extreme diets.

Dr. Wallace: I’m 16 and have been “interested” in a guy for about three months. Lately, he has started showing interest in me, and last night he called and asked me out.

Today at lunch break, his ex-girlfriend came up to me and warned me that he was a “sex fiend” and that he would put tremendous pressure on me to have sex with him. At first I thought she was jealous of me, but the more we talked the more I believed her.

She appeared to be a very nice girl – honest, friendly and sincere.

She said she ended the relationship.

Should I talk to him about this before I go out with him? – Nameless, South Bend, Indiana Dear Nameless: My first thought was to tell you to go out with him and to find out for yourself if he is or is not a gentleman, but I’ve changed my mind.

Don’t go out with him! I normally tell teens not to listen to idle gossip, but in this case I get the feeling his ex-girlfriend is telling the truth.

Everyone opens hands like North’s these days, with two decent suits and no rebid problem. South, with a tough rebid, plunged into the obvious-looking vulnerable game.

When the dummy comes down, it would be easy for declarer to throw an interception. There seem to be at most three losers. But a good quarterback will wonder what might go seriously wrong. The only answer is a 4-0 spade break. Then there appear to be four losers. Is there any way to throw a touchdown pass?

Only if South can eliminate his heart loser. And that requires West’s having the diamond king and East’s having the diamond jack. But declarer also needs a dummy entry once a diamond winner has been established.

South, after winning with his heart ace, cashes his spade ace.

When the bad break is revealed, declarer leads his diamond queen, planning to run it, but West covers with his king. South wins with dummy’s ace and leads the diamond 10, intending to discard his heart seven.

However, East covers with his jack. Declarer ruffs, plays a spade to dummy’s carefully conserved king and throws his low heart on the diamond nine.
