SOUTH ELGIN – Luke Risch is the first one to admit that he’s more of a dog person than a cat person.

But the 11-year-old St. Charles youth on Sunday found himself snuggling next to the cats at Anderson Animal Shelter.

“The cats here are nice,” Luke said.

Luke and others participated in the shelter’s Santa Paws workshop, a fundraiser for the nonprofit shelter. This is the second year of the workshop.

“It’s educational for the kids,” said Christin Meyer, director of humane education at Anderson Animal Shelter.

“They get to work with the animals.”

The children also participated in a number of other activities, such as making treats for the dogs at the shelter. Connor Lipe, 9, of St. Charles, decided to use bacon in the treat he made.

“I think that one of the dogs will like it,” he said.

Meyer’s own dog, Ponyo, a French bulldog, also got plenty of attention. She adopted her from Anderson Animal Shelter two years ago. Ponyo was appropriately dressed in a Santa Claus outfit.

“She’s my little mascot,” Meyer said.

Lauren Guajardo, 7, of South Elgin, couldn’t help petting her.

“She’s really cute,” she said.

Committee OKs late-night permit fees Later permits cost extra; bars can be denied based on history with police calls

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – St. Charles’ Government Operations Committee on Monday approved a proposal that would allow bars to stay open later if liquor licensees are willing to pay extra.

Under the proposal, the closing time for bars would be at midnight, but liquor licensees can apply for late-

night permits to stay open until 1 a.m. or 2 a.m.

The later permits would cost extra, and bars can be denied based on their history with police calls.

Police Chief Jim Lamkin explained that the proposal – which still needs approval from the City Council – mainly effects those with Class B and Class C liquor licenses.

Fee schedules vary depending on the type of liquor

license.

According to the proposal, a licensee with a base license renewal fee of $1,200 that wishes to stay open until 1 a.m. would pay an additional $800 annually, which would total $2,000.

A licensee with a base renewal fee of $1,200 wishing to stay open until 2 a.m. would be charged an additional $2,300, with a total renewal fee of $3,500.

Lamkin said the proposal

provides an exception that allows all bars to stay open until 2 a.m. on New Year’s Eve. Fifth Ward Alderwoman Maureen Lewis, who also serves on the city’s Liquor Commission, said she had not heard much feedback from bar owners about the proposal, but noted that she received a letter from the owner of a bar that’s outside of the downtown area.

She said members of the

Liquor Commission were in support of the proposal.

Mayor Ray Rogina, who serves as the city’s liquor commissioner, said he thinks the proposal will help sway certain “behaviors” of downtown bars.

“It seems to me it’s the end of a long road we discussed way back in the spring,” he said. “That’s not to take away from the good licensees. But I think we’re on the right track.”

New Year’s Eve fireworks display to celebrate city’s 180th birthday

To commemorate the city’s birthday, Batavia aldermen Monday approved a permit to allow for a fireworks display on New Year’s Eve near the Peg Bond Center on the Batavia Riverwalk.

“We are the first community in Kane County to celebrate that milestone,” Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke told aldermen.

The last time the city had fireworks on New Year’s Eve was to celebrate the arrival of the millennium in 2000.

Schielke said the idea

would be to make the evening a family-friendly event, with activities beginning at 9 p.m.

“It will be a nice event to bring the kids to,” Schielke said.

Also as part of the event, the newly formed Batavia Community Band plans to perform a few songs at the Peg Bond Center, Schielke said.

The band recently played at the city’s Celebration of Lights festival.

In other business, the winners of Batavia MainStreet’s banner contest were recognized.

Batavia MainStreet teamed up with Batavia High School graphics design students to create seasonal banners that will be placed on light poles in

downtown Batavia.

Students designed up to three banners to be displayed in the downtown in the spring, summer and fall in the 2014-15 seasons.

Winners were chosen by a combination of Facebook likes and a judging committee.

The winners included: Hunter Nott – spring banner, Brooke Belair – summer banner, and Cassie Sychta – fall banner.

In addition, the runners up also will be displayed on the Batavia Plaza and Finn Street parking lot poles. Those include: Ken Ryan – spring banner, Colby Green – summer banner and Lauren Tollios – fall banner.

Looks a lot like Christmas Number of neighborhood holiday displays sign of the season

ATAVIA – To say that Batavia 1st Ward Alderman Garran Sparks’ house at 943 Bluestem Lane in Batavia is decked out for the holidays is an understatement.

Sparks’ display is so big that it takes up both his front and backyards.

Sparks welcomes people to walk a lighted path that extends from the street to the rear yard of his house.

It is one of the shining stars among holiday displays, which can be seen throughout the area.

While some opt for more modest decorations, some go all out. Sparks’ display started out on a much smaller scale.

“I started just putting lights in front of the house,” Sparks said.

The display continues to get bigger and bigger every year – and taller, in the case of the 45-foot-tall blue spruce tree that is in his backyard this year.

With the help of a cherry picker, Sparks was able to get all the lights wrapped around the tree.

Walking along the path, one will encounter a variety of decorations, including Santa and his sleigh and even a peacock.

For the fourth year, Sparks is collecting food donations for the Batavia Interfaith Food Pantry. Those who come out to the display can drop off donations in a box at the beginning of the path.

Last year, Sparks collected between 12 to 13 shopping carts of food for the pantry.

According to its website, the Batavia Interfaith Food Pantry is in need of such food items as cereal, beef stew, beef chili and baby food, and other items such as dish soap,

laundry detergent, shampoo and conditioner, paper towels and bar soap.

This year’s display almost didn’t happen because of the harsh weather conditions the area has experienced lately.

“Two weeks before

Thanksgiving, I had three inches of water in my backyard and one week before Thanksgiving, the ground was frozen and I couldn’t get the stakes in,” Sparks said.

But with the help of his daughter, son-in-law and

their kids, Sparks was able to finish this year’s display.

He said laying out the path is probably the hardest part.

“I have to put stakes in every foot and a half,” he said.

Sparks doesn’t even know how many lights are includ-

ed in the display.

As part of the display, the two-story shed in his backyard is decorated with lights that are synchronized to music.

Like others, Sparks has made the transition to LED lights, which have become more popular in the past few years.

He said the display doubles his electric bill for the month.

“It’s equivalent to running the air over the summer during the hottest month,” Sparks said. “It’s typically about $400, about $200 more than I would usually pay in the winter.”

Sparks’ holiday display has become a tradition in the neighborhood, said his next-door neighbor, Shelly McEachern. She said her family looks forward to it every year.

“My three kids grew up on Garran’s lights,” McEachern said. “The whole neighborhood enjoys it.”

Sparks said the work and expense he puts into his display is worth it.

“I like to see kids’ reactions,” he said. “And when you open up the blinds in the house, you can see the lights from every window. It kind of brightens up winter.”

Homeowners aren’t the only ones going all out for the holidays. Malone Funeral Home, at 324 E. State St. in Geneva, is bathed in holiday lights during the holiday season.

“It’s become a tradition,” said Dennis Malone of Malone Funeral Home. “We have been doing it at least 15 years. It’s kind of grown over the years.”

And people have come to expect them, he said.

“We get a lot of compliments,” Malone said. “People just enjoy seeing it decorated like that.”

Police show up in force for Shop with a Cop

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – As he shopped Saturday alongside several St. Charles police officers, Logan Gagnepain, 12, said he planned to at least browse the video game aisle at Super Target in St. Charles during the department’s first Shop with a Cop event.

“This is my first Shop with a Cop, and I’ve gotta say this is very generous of them,” he said.

Members of the Metropolitan Alliance of Police Chapter 27 – the St. Charles Police Department’s union – partnered with Super Target to shop for toys with six children whose families are being assisted by Lazarus House in St. Charles.

Seventeen police officers showed up Saturday to go shopping, and only three children were able to make it. Detective Jerry Schomer, union president, said an illness and possibly the weather kept a few families at home, but officers still planned to give them gift certificates and a stocking filled with gifts.

Schomer said the union donated $500 toward the shopping spree while Target donated $200 and offered to give a 20 percent discount on all items purchased Saturday.

Officer Bridget McCowan, who helped organize the department’s first Shop with a Cop, said she hoped to make it an annual event that grows each year.

She said Super Target was especially generous in helping coordinate the event because it was put together somewhat at the last minute.

Store manager Evan Lenchner said in addition to the discount and $200, the store also donated wrapping paper and food from the store’s cafe. Target volunteers also were on hand to assist with shopping.

“We want this to happen every year,” he said. “Next year, we hope to give $500 to $1,000.”

St. Charles Police Chief Jim Lamkin said he had done a Shop with a Cop event while working in Elgin and wanted to bring it to St. Charles.

“This is probably one of the nicest things these guys can do. I’m really proud of them,” he said. “I did this when I was younger and never forgot it.”

The three children who were able to make it to Super Target on Saturday picked up a variety of gifts, including some to give to their family members. Hannah Gagnepain, 11, picked up a present for her mom, along with a new basketball, a Nintendo DS game and a popcorn maker.

Johnathan Mosley, 11, got the top gift on his list – a new Xbox gaming system.

McCowan said she contacted Super Target about a month ago and wasn’t sure what to expect for the first event.

“For their employees to come out and pull this off was more than I expected.

[The officers’] support of this is priceless,” she said.

“Next year, we’re going to be doing fundraising for this and working to find avenues to fundraise so we can help more children next year.”

Dar Johnson, home suffering from a lengthy illness, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2013. He was born July 7, 1941, in Muskegon, Mich., to Elizabeth (Ade) and Edwin Johnson, went to Trinity Lutheran School and later graduated from Muskegon High School.

Dar earned a B.A. in education from Concordia Teachers College, River Forest and an M.S. and Ed.D. in education from Northern Illinois University. In 1962, he married Dorothy (Dotty) Homan. They had two children, Todd and Britt.

Dr. Johnson taught at Immanuel Lutheran School, Dundee, before moving to District U-46 in Elgin.

He was principal of Hillcrest Elementary and Udina Special Education School for 12 years before holding several administrative positions in U-46 and then becoming superintendent of schools in both Jackson, Michigan and Evanston.

During this time, he also was an adjunct professor for Roosevelt University in Chicago.

Dar and Dotty took an early retirement and worked for the Evangelical Church of America as lay mission developers. After knocking on many doors in the community of Newaygo, Mich., they opened the doors of Body of Christ Lutheran Church where they served as pastors for two years. They then moved to Batavia to be close to grandsons.

For many years Dar taught adult Bible Study. He was an avid reader, cross country skier, cyclist, jogger, tennis player and arrowhead hunter. He loved history and visiting historical sites in the United States. He was a gifted educator who loved children and being with them. But most of all Dar loved the Lord and his family and enjoyed spending time with them. His five grandsons were very precious to him.

Dar was preceded in death by his parents, Elizabeth and Edwin Johnson. He is survived by his

Former North student inspires bill to require AED, CPR training

CHARLES – Lauren Laman, a former St. Charles North High School student who died in 2008, has inspired a bill that would require Illinois high school students to learn how to use an automatic external defibrillator and administer CPR. State Rep. Dan Burke, D-Chicago, introduced the bill to the House of Representatives in late October, according the Illinois General Assembly website, and Lauren Laman’s parents are working to get the word out about the proposed high school graduation requirements.

Lauren Laman was 18 when she died after her drill team’s practice at the school, as the Kane County Chronicle reported Feb. 11, 2008.

The coroner had said she died from a heart condition.

“My family decided that we would work together, and in her memory, try to get a law passed requiring training as part of high school requirements for graduation.”

An automatic external defibrillator, or AED, was nearby when Lauren Laman collapsed at the school, said George Laman, who said his family has been pushing for the bill.

“Our daughter passed away, and they did not use the AED, which was her only

chance of survival,” he said.

“My family decided that we would work together, and in her memory, try to get a law passed requiring training as part of high school requirements for graduation.”

He said Lauren was diagnosed with a mitral valve prolapse, which he said is a common heart condition that’s also known as a heart murmur. George Laman, a former firefighter and paramedic, said AEDs are easy to use and said “time is of the essence” in a cardiac situation.

“An AED has made all the changes in the world because almost anybody can use it,” he said. “It’s very easy to use, and people are protected

by Good Samaritan laws. ...

That’s the only way people in sudden cardiac arrest are going to live.”

Good Samaritan laws protect individuals who assist a victim during a medical emergency, according to HeartSafe America.

City Administrator Mary McKittrick said if a district is created, it will have no impact on individual property taxes.

Fares for Ride in Kane service increases by $1 GENEVA – Geneva senior citizens and disabled residents who utilize the Ride in Kane transportation service will have to pay $1 more per ride starting in 2014.

Since its debut in 2008, the regular fare for rides within 10 miles has been $3. However,

because of escalating fuel costs, the basic fare will increase to $4 starting in January.

The cost for rides exceeding 10 miles will remain the same price at a $1.50 for each additional mile.

Riders are not required to tip the driver.

Geneva sponsors the Ride in Kane program for seniors age 65 and older and disabled residents. The city instituted additional regulations starting in September, including: • All Geneva clients are now serviced by Pace buses (no taxi rides); • Use is restricted to a maximum of 30 one-way rides each month per rider; and • The program service area is limited to Kane County.

Antibacterial washes would have one year to prove they’re safe to remain in U.S. stores, part of a proposal by regulators to address 40 years of debate on overuse of germ-killing chemicals.

Antibacterial soap has gained “widespread consumer use” despite a lack of data showing added health benefits, the FDA said Monday.

The common active ingredient, triclosan or triclocarban, also may be linked to hormone imbalances and antibiotic resistance, the FDA said.

New safety standards would affect as many as 2,000 products including Henkel AG’s Dial, although they won’t apply to hand sanitizers such as Purell.

The FDA also stopped short of addressing mouthwash, cosmetics and cleaners that also have the chemicals. Some companies such as Johnson & Johnson, Procter & Gamble Co. and Lysol-maker Reckitt Benckiser Group Plc have started phasing out triclosan.

The FDA first floated a plan in the 1970s to limit the use of triclosan and acted largely because of a lawsuit by the Natural Resources Defense Council. The New York-based environmental advocacy group prodded the FDA to act specifically on triclosan, though after review, the agency proposed evaluating a wider array of chemicals.

“FDA continues to recognize that there are a lot of gaps about the safety and effectiveness of triclosan,” said Mae Wu, a lawyer with the health and environment division at the NRDC. The court-ordered deadline for the final rule is 2016.

If companies haven’t provided data to support germ-killing claims by then, they will either have to remove the antibacterial ingredients or eliminate the claims from the products’ labeling.

The proposal is positive for consumers if companies reformulate the soaps to remove the chemicals in question, Wu said. If they choose only to relabel the product as a regular soap, allowing them to keep triclosan in the hand washes, consumers won’t be protected, she said.

WASHINGTON – Facebook, Wal-Mart and other companies planning to use facial-recognition scans for security or tailored sales pitches will help write rules for how images and online profiles can be used.

The U.S. Department of Commerce will start meeting with industry and privacy advocates in February to draft a voluntary code of conduct for using facial recognition products, according to a public notice. The draft will ready by June.

“We are very skeptical about stomping on technology in the cradle,” Mallory Duncan, senior vice president of the Washington-based National Retail Federation Inc., said in a phone interview. “It’s not a good idea to develop codes or laws that freeze technology before you have the ability of determining what it’s capable of achieving.”

In Britain, Tesco Plc is installing face-scanning technology at its gasoline stations to determine customers’ ages and gender so tailored advertisements can be delivered to them on screens at checkouts.

Retailers may be able to compare customers’ images from security cameras with law enforcement photo databases.

Facebook, Apple and other Internet companies have been trying to restore consumer confidence that they protect privacy amid an international backlash over revelations that the U.S. National Security Agency has collected data on their users.

The American Civil Liberties Union and other privacy groups want laws, not voluntary standards, to prevent face scans from being used for spying and tracking. Trade groups like the retail federation, which represents WalMart, oppose regulations or laws they say might cripple an emerging market estimated

to reach $6.5 billion by 2018 by MarketsandMarkets, a Dallas research company.

Facial-detection technology uses a mathematical formula to create a digital template of a person’s face, otherwise known as a faceprint. It underlies one of the more popular Internet activities – tagging yourself and others in photos uploaded to social media sites like Facebook or within photo management applications such as Apple’s iPhoto.

An advertising and technology agency in Nashville, Tenn., called Redpepper is testing an Internet application in which users agree to give access to their Facebook profiles and have their faces scanned by cameras at local businesses when they walk in or by. The application then delivers customized advertising deals to their smartphones.

Meanwhile, facial scans are becoming more common to establish identity for secure access to buildings or devices.

The FDA is giving companies and consumer groups six months to comment on the proposal with an additional 60-day rebuttal period, and expects the standards to take effect one year after the rule is made final.

J&J has said none of its baby-care products contain triclosan, and the company plans to eliminate the ingredient from adult items by 2015.

P&G has said it will remove the substance by next year. Reckitt said in October it plans to remove the ingredient from all U.S. products by the end of 2014.

OPINIONS LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Pension ‘reform’ unfortunate To the Editor: Recently, the state legislature took the unfortunate step of passing major pension “reform” legislation that few had the chance to fully understand.

The 300-plus page bill was crafted behind closed doors – and the ink was barely dry – when it was plopped on lawmakers’ desks one day before they were asked to vote on it.

Many are wondering why the vote was scheduled the day after the filing period for candidates to be on the March ballot. Not to be cynical, [but] this looks bad.

The public deserves to know what their elected officials are voting on. That’s why I’ve been a proponent of 72 hours public notice before the legislature votes on any state budget.

This $160 billion proposal – which spans generations – de-

served nothing less. But my call for hearings went unheeded.

I voted against this bill for several reasons. First, I don’t believe it was drafted to meet constitutional standards and stands a very real chance of being struck down by the courts.

I’m also very concerned about how the moneys “saved” by this bill will be spent.

We all know what happened with the 67 percent income tax hike. They promised us it would get our fiscal house in order. But what happened? We’re actually worse now than we were before the tax increase!

The bill contains no guarantee that the moneys will be spent wisely, and if history is any guide, they won’t be. I’m concerned that Gov. Quinn and the Democrat-controlled legislature will use the money to expand government, not pay off old bills.

I also voted against this bill

because of how retirees and public sector employees were treated. For years, they did their part, faithfully making their pension contributions. And now, when the state is dramatically changing the promises it made to them, workers and employees were shut out of the process.

That’s not right. I value the service and sacrifices made by our public sector employees and retirees.

Remember what Nancy Pelosi famously said about Obamacare, as it was ramrodded through Congress – that they needed to pass the bill to find out what’s in it. Obviously, there’s been a lot of “buyer’s remorse” from that decision.

We should have learned our lesson!

A guide to individual charitable donations

By KEN STERN Slate ’Tis the season of giving: of gifts, of parties and of donations to charities. Some 40 percent of all individual charitable donations are made in December.

For many charities – such as Teach for America, which received 80.5 percent of all individual donations for 2012 in December, and Save the Children, which raked in 68.6 percent of donations in that same month – end-of-year fundraising is the difference between a successful year and financial hard times.

The American charitable sector is the largest in the world, with Americans con-

tributing more than $300 billion a year in money plus $260 billion in volunteer time. With 1.1 million charities to choose from, it’s not easy to decide where all that money should go. Yet all the data show that American donors are just not interested in putting in much time or effort into making those decisions.

The fact that you’re reading this piece indicates that you don’t fall into that two-thirds of no-research donors. And of course, it’s easy to criticize the giving habits of American donors but much harder to provide specific, constructive advice – that’s why most holiday-giving advice columns are so toothless and generic. We’re

hoping that this one proves to be more useful.

Rule No. 1: Go for a high-impact donation. This might sound like it’s from the “No Kidding” Academy of Donor Advice. But in fact only a small subset of donors – representing 16 percent of all donors and 12 percent of all donations – define themselves as “high impact,” supporting the charities that create the most social good.

Rule No. 2: Don’t get obsessed with efficiency. The most pervasive – and most destructive – myth around giving is that “efficiency” is the best measurement of charities, and that overhead spending should be kept to an absolute minimum. Yet

there’s no established correlation between efficiency and effectiveness; many of the investments that are disparaged as overhead – such as research and evaluation, training, technology and planning – can be critically important to building great organizations.

Rule No. 3: Remember that you’re on your own. There are more than 150,000 people in the U.S. who work in the mutual fund industry with the sole purpose of helping people make sensible investment decisions. Conversely, there are fewer than 100 people whose job is to provide the public with information on making effective donations.

Rule No. 4: Consider who needs your help. Because of all

our old, hard-to-break habits in how we give, we badly underweight support for those in need. Less than 12 percent of charitable donations end up with human service organizations, which provide housing, food and nutrition programs, youth development, disaster relief and other services.

Rule No. 5: Give when you are ready. Federal tax incentives have relatively modest impact on overall giving, but they certainly do affect the timing of giving: Twenty-two percent of all annual online giving now occurs on Dec. 30 and 31. But when you’re trying to support the most effective charities, rushing to get in a last-minute donation is not a recipe for success.

Frazier’s gains spilling over Batavia junior carrying football bravado onto the mat

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Noah Frazier earned a 4-1 decision victory at 195 pounds to cement the Batavia wrestling team’s 31-26 win against Waubonsie Valley Friday night.

Speaking on the eve of the dual, Frazier assessed matters with far less pandemonium than the kind that greeted him before the final bout of the night.

“A little rusty on the mat,” he said, “but you get better quick. The only way to fix it is just get mat time, and I’m getting plenty of that.”

Just a few days removed from helping the Batavia football team to the Class 6A state title as a defensive end and tight end, Frazier happily has thrown himself into the trenches indoors. He credits the

football run for added vigor on the mats, and those who have spent time with him in both sports firmly agree.

“He has the strength and the technique. He has the know-how. He just needs to believe in himself enough to do it,” Bulldogs senior 220-pounder Connor McKeehan said.

“And I think he has more of that confidence than he’s ever had before. So I’m excited for him. It should be a fun year with him.”

Frazier hardly had a good time during his sophomore wrestling season.

Although his 18-18 record at 182 marked a sizable jump from a 8-19 mark at the same weight class as a freshman, it still wasn’t up to Frazier’s standards.

Like the rest of his IHSA brethren, he entered regionals with a clean slate but was

unable to advance past the first stage of the state series.

“More the won-loss record and my performance,” Frazier said. “Came in with higher expectations than what I ended up doing. And I think that also has helped motivate me to make sure that this year’s better.”

Frazier worked to balance his two sports since the spring, joining freestyle Greco tournaments when he could fit them in around football camps. He also gained plenty from coach Scott Bayer’s wrestling-football crossover skills camp.

He described the wrestling team’s trip to a team camp at Northwestern as “a great bonding experience” that also showed Frazier new techniques. Listening to Wildcats junior heavyweight Mike McMullan – an NCAA finalist last season – and Jake Herbert, a former two-time champion at

184, especially struck a chord.

Within the Bulldogs’ own mat room, Frazier is fast gaining name recognition himself.

Just ask sophomore practice partner Dylan Uzumecki.

“I’ve learned quite a lot from him,” Uzumecki said. “He’s really strong.”

Opposing quarterbacks learned as much in the fall, as Frazier set a new single-season program with 13 sacks.

Like the school’s Bulldog mascot, Bayer and Co. are salivating about seeing crossover success.

“He physically has been ready for varsity wrestling,” Bayer said, “but I think he’s starting to gain confidence.”

Frazier doesn’t think, he knows.

Even the meek can tell you that has long been an important step on the path to self-assuredness.

For the movie, Beebe is partnering with Desert Wind Faith Films, and executive producer Steven Camp said the movie will feature original storytelling beyond what went into the book.

“It’ll be a lot of what Denise wrote, no question about it, but the nice thing about this group is they’re giving me final say because I do not want a Hollywood story here,” Don Beebe said. “I want a story based on truth and not something that’s not true and fantasized. My story is crazy enough as it is that you really don’t have to make up a whole lot.”

No, Don Beebe will not play himself in the movie, he brushed off with a laugh.

“I don’t know the first thing about this stuff,” Don Beebe said. “I’m as wet behind the ears as you can get but I’m just going to enjoy that deal and know full well I’m very blessed and honored to potentially have this happen, but knowing full well why. This isn’t about Don Beebe. It’s about my faith and potential platform I’ll have to share that faith.”

Don Beebe consistently maintained that molding young men into devout Christians, using football as a tool, dwarfed wins and losses at Aurora Christian. Coaching winning football, though, also came naturally to the Kaneland graduate, whose Aurora Christian teams went 97-26 in 10 years, featuring consecutive

Class 3A state championships in 2011 and 2012.

Dave Beebe said his brother gave him free rein to mold the Eagles’ defense, which caught up with the program’s vaunted spread offense as a dominant unit in its own right in recent years.

Dave Beebe said he and his brother have had many conversations about an eventual transition.

“We knew the time was inevitable but it wasn’t until this year that it was a differ-

Camp said it is too early to size up the movie’s breadth, but speculated that Don Beebe feeling compelled to mentor young athletes at Aurora Christian likely would be included. Fundraising for the project already is underway.

Don Beebe said Aurora Christian is “still my home,” noting that he has two daughters who attend the school. A branch of his popular sports training business, House of Speed, also operates out of Aurora Christian.

“I will always wear my state championship rings more than I wear my Super Bowl ring,” Don Beebe said. “Matter of fact, I never wear my Super Bowl ring. I take more pride in the sense that we won a state championship with a bunch of innocent kids. The Super Bowl was great, don’t get me wrong, it was great, it was awesome … but when you’re getting 16 and 17 year old kids to do crazy things and win a state championship, that’s so rewarding for me.”

Ten years ago, Don Beebe felt a calling to take over the Aurora Christian football program.

Coaching high school was not just a lark for the former NFL receiver and six-time Super Bowl participant. Beebe took the program’s mentoring potential to heart, helping orchestrate a stadium and eventually a state championship-caliber program at the small, faith-based school.

But Beebe is a man of great ambition, and the time finally arrived when running the Eagles’ football program no longer fit on his front burner. On Friday night, Beebe announced at the Eagles’ postseason banquet that he has stepped down as head coach and will be replaced by his younger brother, Dave Beebe.

Dave Beebe has been defensive coordinator for the Eagles since Don Beebe took charge in 2004.

“I know that it’s right,” Don Beebe said. “It doesn’t mean it’s not going to hurt, but I know it’s right. What gives me great comfort is that Dave is going to take the program over, and it’s going to be fantastic.”

At least for the short term, Dave Beebe is hopeful that Don will stay on as the Eagles’ offensive coordinator in a transition reminiscent of the one made at Batavia when Mike Gaspari and Dennis Piron essentially swapped responsibilities.

Don Beebe cited two main factors in relinquishing the head coaching post less than a month after the Eagles were eliminated in the IHSA Class 3A state semifinals. An upcoming movie project based on the central role Christianity has played in his life journey figures to lead to other opportunities to speak of his religious convictions, and he also intends to see all of his son’s future college football games; Chad Beebe is wrapping up his freshman season at Northern Illinois.

In addition to the movie – which could be completed as soon as fall 2015 – Camp said Don Beebe’s story will help spark an up-and-coming website, nevergiveup.org, that Camp thinks has the potential to become the “most powerful faith-based initiative on the planet, I really do.”

A West Aurora graduate, Camp said he’s been drawn to Don Beebe’s life story for many years.

“We believe this faith-based film will be very warmly embraced by our target audience but we also think this film has

Kaneland’s Komel can’t pass up CMU Kaneland senior right tackle Joe Komel lamented a lack of motivation early in his football career.

The events leading up to Saturday’s verbal commitment to Central Michigan illustrate a newfound assertiveness.

Acting upon last week’s visit to Kaneland that snapped a lengthy lull in communication, the Chippewas called Komel at 9 a.m. Saturday. He accepted their scholarship offer some four hours later.

“I got the call, they offered a scholarship and not long after that, I knew it was something I couldn’t pass up,” Komel said.

The past few days have prompted plenty of reflection from Komel, a 6-foot-3, 290-pounder who projects as a guard with the Chippewas.

Of course, he recalls the good times with the Knights, who lost just one regular season game during his two varsity seasons. But Komel quickly asserts none of it would have been possible without teammates such as Alex Snyder – a fouryear starter on the offensive line – and his coaches.

Assistants Mike Thorgesen and Pat Ryan were especially helpful in shaping Komel’s emergence on the Knights’ front five.

“Oh, boy. Freshman and sophomore year, I was big but I didn’t have much fire under my butt, I guess you could say,” Komel said. “I was scared for a starting spot on varsity because I always started because I was big, but I wasn’t sure if that would happen. … I worked my tail off going into junior year, and the rest is history.”

Chippewas coaches consulted defensive end Blake Serpa, a former Kaneland standout, about Komel. Much of Serpa’s insight came from conversations with Komel’s older brother, Sam, a close friend who now plays baseball at NCAA Division II Flagler College in St. Augustine, Fla. “He’s got a good family and I got closer with his family my senior year because of Sam, so it’s pretty exciting to know his family is going to be there,” Serpa said.

Northern Illinois offered Komel a walk-on spot, which he also was considering.

North girls on early roll: The St. Charles North girls bowlers entered Saturday’s Strikefest Invitational at Joliet’s Town & Country Lanes with several unknown variables.

Chief among them: what to expect in a 44-team event.

The North Stars left for home with a much better idea of how they can expect to fare for the rest of the season.

“Going in there not knowing anything and coming out of there with 11th place is really good,” North senior Bobbi Jo Buhlman said.

Much like their counterparts on the boys side, North touts plenty of depth this season, led by Buhlman and fellow seniors Ashley England and Ashley Montgomery.

The Strikefest effort capped a solid week for the program that began with a fourth-place finish at the Rockford Jefferson Tournament on Dec. 7, North’s best showing at the event. On Thursday, Buhlman rolled a career-best 298 in the first game of a dual against East Aurora at Aurora’s Parkside Lanes.

Naturally, quite a crowd piled up as word of Buhlman’s gem spread. She hit strikes on her first 11 rolls before finishing with an 8-count.

“I wasn’t really paying attention to everyone else in the bowling alley,” Buhlman said.

“I only found out afterward that there were so many people watching.”

FOOTBALL Turnstile success at state: At DeKalb, the first IHSA state football finals held in DeKalb drew almost 30,000 fans to Northern Illinois’ Huskie Stadium over two days, per IHSA spokesman Matt Troha.

Troha also said the Friday attendance to watch the Class 1A-4A finals was just more than 10,000. Batavia brought an impressive haul to witness its eventual 6A victory on Saturday afternoon.

One of the main reasons NIU secured the bid for the state football finals in odd-numbered years through 2021 was its proximity to Chicago and the potential for more fans to attend if the finals were closer.

That proved to be true in 2013.

Troha said the attendance for last year’s state finals in Champaign at Illinois’ Memorial Stadium was “around 26,800.”

The Friday attendance was a little more than 8,000 in 2012.

WEST CHICAGO – The St. Charles East boys bowling team overcame a 299 individual game from an Oswego athlete Monday to win a nonconference dual, 3,216 to 3,022 at Bowling Green Sports Center.

“It was a well-rounded effort by the entire team in a pretty big, high-scoring match,” Saints coach Steve Dessauer said.

Matt Markovich, Dean Mudlong and Alex Paschal all rolled over 650 series to boost East, which has enjoyed several strong individual performances during an early-season surge.

“Once every single player can put it together, we feel like we can dominate and put together a strong run,” Dessauer said.

The IHSA will not proceed with a boys and girls lacrosse state series in the spring of 2014, as the entry numbers required to begin a state series were not met, the IHSA announced Monday.

The threshold to concurrently begin a boys and girls lacrosse state series is 65 schools entering to participate in the boys lacrosse state series and 40 schools entering to participate in the girls lacrosse states series.

The entry numbers were met for girls lacrosse with 43 schools entering, but the boys lacrosse entry number was 55. The IHSA board requires

both to reach the benchmark in order for the State Series to begin.

“We remain confident that lacrosse will become a sanctioned IHSA sport in the near future,” IHSA executive director Marty Hickman said in a news release. “The number of schools competing in the sport has continued to grow. However, we also know that financial restraints have prevented many schools from committing to the sport and believe it is in the best interest of the schools, and the sport, to wait until we reach the previously established benchmarks before beginning a state series.”

Peez earns praise for Bulldogs One of the bright spots in Batavia’s 2-5 start has been the play of junior forward Chasen Peez, who has been the Bulldogs’ most consistent offensive threat in the season’s first month.

The 6-foot-6, 205-pound varsity newcomer’s latest impressive outing came Saturday, when Peez led the Bulldogs with 21 points in a 69-65 loss to Larkin.

Peez has shown the ability to score both on the interior and from beyond the 3-point arc. Bulldogs coach Jim Nazos is high on the forward’s upside.

“Chasen can do a lot of nice things offensively,” Nazos said. “ … As you play against the better teams, there are a lot of little things you can do better within the game that he’s finding out right now that I think are really going to make him the player he wants to be.

“Sometimes he just thinks the size can get a board, and it can’t. You’ve got to get position first. Sometimes he’s about a step off of the help [defense]. I think once he gets going fluidly on both ends, he’s going to be a very nice player. I think his best basketball is ahead of him.”

Peez also has shown he’s unafraid to take big shots.

His 3-pointer with 1:34 to play Saturday tied the Larkin game at 65.

“That kid has soaked up a lot of coaching,” Batavia senior Micah Coffey said.

“He’s got some unbelievable talent. Everyone can see he can shoot, he can get in the post. … Obviously he can get better, but he’s been a huge

playing time but has been playing very well at practice as of late,” Knights coach Brian Johnson said. “He got a nice opportunity against Rochelle. He’s very quick and was able to capitalize on some turnovers and missed shots from Rochelle to get something down the floor very fast.”

Barnes, listed at 5-foot-10, is a quality long jumper in the Knights’ track and field program. If he continues to produce off the bench, Johnson said it would be a boost for the Knights’ backcourt rotation.

“We ride Drew (David) and John (Pruett) and Tyler (Carlson) very hard during games,” Johnson said. “They play a lot of minutes. It’s nice to be able to get Drew and John some breathers here and there and have an option [in addition to] Connor Fedderly, with Ben Barnes.

“We’re moving in the right direction,” Nazos said.

“You’d like to see it get rewarded with a win a little bit, too, but that’s coming.”

Even thrilling games sometimes yield anticlimactic finishes. Geneva had the ball out of bounds under its offensive basket, trailing by two points with 3.5 seconds to go, as the Vikings sought to come all the way back from an 18-point deficit Friday against St. Charles East.

But Navigato was called for an offensive foul before the Vikings had a chance to inbound it, wiping out a chance for a buzzer-beater.

“The only issue that we had is that I think they knew the play was coming a little bit,” Geneva coach Phil Ralston said. “We probably needed to have a secondary action off of that.”

Despite momentum swinging dramatically to Larkin midway through the fourth quarter, Batavia (2-5, 0-2 UEC River) had several chances to tie or take

the lead after Bulldogs junior Chasen Peez drained the team’s 13th and final 3-ball of the night to tie the game at 65 with 1:34 to play.

McCullum’s slashing basket put the Royals up, 67-65, with 1:02 left. Peez then was fouled and missed both free throws with 48 seconds to go, but Bull-

dogs junior Danny Pieczynski gathered an offensive rebound.

Coffey misfired on a 3-pointer but Pieczynski snared another clutch offensive rebound, and Batavia called timeout with 30 seconds left. A well executed backdoor cut positioned Coffey to tie the game, but he was unable to finish in traffic. This time, Larkin gathered the rebound, but the Royals’ Brayden Royse missed two free throws with 20 seconds to play, giving the Bulldogs new life yet again.

Peez tried to tie it but missed a shot in the lane, and Larkin’s Jones then converted a pair of free throws with 5.2 seconds left for the final margin.

Jones led all scorers with 24 points, while Peez led Batavia with 21 points. Coffey’s football rust appears to be eroding; he had five of the Bulldogs’ 3-pointers and scored 16 points. Pieczynski and reserve forward Ryan Olson scored eight points each for the Bulldogs.

BATAVIA – As fleeting as the Batavia boys basketball team’s rut was Saturday night against Larkin, it was enough to deprive the Bulldogs of a big-time upset.

Batavia saw its double-digit fourth quarter lead punctured in a hurry by Upstate Eight Conference River power Larkin, which stormed past Batavia late for a 69-65 win.

The Bulldogs lost despite outscoring the Royals, 39-0, from 3-point land.

“It’s frustrating to know we were there,” Batavia senior guard Micah Coffey said. “We had the opportunity to put that game away. It just kind of shows the fight that we can have. We kind of see glimpses of where we can be, we’ve just got to be there all the time now.”

Coffey’s 3-pointer with 5:15 to go in the game put Batavia ahead, 59-49.

But the Royals (7-1, 3-0 UEC River) negated that 10-point deficit in less than two minutes, catching the Bulldogs at 60-all on senior guard Kendale McCullum’s coast-to-coast layup that turned into a three-point play with 3:18 to go.

McCullum, perhaps the top defender in the conference, cranked up his team’s energy throughout the fourth quarter, when he scored 13 of his 19 points.

“They did capitalize on some of our turnovers, and when they capitalized, they scored in like three seconds some possessions,” said Batavia coach Jim Nazos, whose team dropped its fourth straight game. “Maybe in a run we’ve got to dig in, really get in a gap better, force another turn and draw some possessions out for them offensively.

But they’re good. McCullum’s good, and that (Andrew) Jones kid has got a lot better, too.

VIEWS Hub Arkush The idea that Jay Cutler had to knock the rust off against the Browns before settling in for his third most efficient passing day of the season – his 102.2 passer rating trailed only his 128.1 vs. New Orleans and 106.5 vs. the Giants – is wrong.

Cutler completed his first three passes and then five straight after his first interception to Tashaun Gipson ended the Bears’ opening drive.

By the end of the day his performance was really just Jay being Jay and leading arguably one of the Bears best offensive performances of the season, considering the Browns, at least statistically, are the second-best defense they’ve faced.

Putting up 440 yards, 179 on the ground and 261 through the air, and balancing 31 rushes and 33 pass attempts, Cutler led an impressive show and I thought earned a B on the day.

Obviously, the bad picks have to stop, but hey, at least to this point in his career that’s Cutler.

I’ve got an A for the running backs. Matt Forte allowed the Bears to control the tempo of the game all afternoon and was the key to a 9½-plus-minute advantage in time of possession while being extremely productive with 24 carries for 127 yards.

And it was great to see Michael Bush finally bust out with a 40-yard touchdown run to seal the victory.

The receivers earned a B+.

Martellus Bennett, Earl Bennett and Alshon Jeffery caught all 15 passes they were targeted with – Martellus six, Earl four and Jeffery five – for 164 yards.

Brandon Marshall made big plays and showed leadership with how he handled the two Cutler picks, and Marshall and Jeffery both had very good days blocking.

But they can’t get an A with Martellus Bennett putting the ball on the ground and giving up a 51-yard T.J. Ward return for a touchdown.

I’m also going to give the offensive line a B+. They did allow Cutler to get sacked twice, but on a number of other throws he was able to relax for quite a while in the pocket against one of the league’s better pass rushes.

More importantly I thought the line had one of its best run-blocking days of the year.

For those of you who are ready to bench the Alshon Jeffery end around, they can’t.

While teams now see Jeffery coming, the fake to Jeffery coming around and pitch back to Forte going the other way is one of the best misdirection run plays in the league.

The defensive line gets a C+. Jeremiah Ratliff was extremely active and disruptive,

The flip side of that is there again were no quarterback sacks for the Bears, and holding a team to just 8 yards more than its average rushing yards a game isn’t a great win, but it was an upgrade for these guys.

The linebackers get a B-, but it’s a mixed bag. James Anderson was very good, Jon

Bostic wasn’t and Khaseem Greene was mostly invisible.

I have to give the secondary a B+. Chris Conte and Major Wright were up and down, for the most part just kind of there, but Tim Jennings was very good and Zack Bowman was outstanding for the second week in a row.

Josh Gordon was the hottest player in the NFL

coming into this game, and for 59 minutes the Bears held him to two catches on 10 targets for just 24 yards.

Finally, there is coach Marc Trestman and his staff, and from me it’s a B+. They were right about Cutler and steadfast in their resolve.

I still expect the defense will cost them a playoff spot, but they can’t go out and make plays. All they can do is coach them, and considering what they’re working with, they may be doing as much as they can.

It was not a medical theory or a science, but rather a way to “determine” the character and temperament of a person. In 1796 a German physician, Franz Joseph Gall, began teaching a discipline he called phrenology - the study of a patient based on the bumps on the patient’s head. Gall said there were 27 different bumps, each caused by the brain mass inside the skull. He called each bump an “organ,” and very soon prints and 3-D ceramic heads covered with “maps” of the brain were produced - all of them collectible today. From about 1810 to 1840, phrenology was widely accepted. From the measurement of the skull and the size of the “organ” inside, Gall claimed to identify character traits. For example, he said that all women had undeveloped organs for success as artists or scientists, but that their other organs indicated they were religious and good at child care. But the heads are popular conversation pieces. Phrenology items recently offered for sale online included an iron inkwell stand topped by a 6-inch-high milk glass head with appropriate marks, six different styles of busts marked with black lines showing the “organs,” and charts old and new. You also can find instruments to measure the bumps, and even a bicycle helmet painted with the names of the bumps. Can you tell me what they’re worth?

A: Jaycee Furniture made reproduction furniture in traditional styles. The company was founded

by Jack Cohen in 1947 and closed in 1998. Carson Pirie Scott & Co. was a furniture store headquartered in Chicago. It started when Samuel Carson and John Pirie founded a drygoods store in Amboy, Ill., in 1854.

The company moved to Chicago during the late 1860s. It became Carson Pirie Scott & Co. when Robert Scott became a partner in 1890.

The company still is in business, now operating under the name Carson’s. The labels on your chairs suggest they were sold after 1950. The chairs would sell as useful pieces of furniture, but not as antiques. The price probably will be less than half the cost of a similar new chair. *** Q: I have a couple of vintage issues of a French comic book titled “Les Pieds Nickeles.” Is there a collecting club for this sort of thing?

A: The French comic strip titled “Les Pieds Nickeles” (loosely translated as “The Nickel-Plated Feet Gang”) was first published in 1908. The strips must have been collected later for publication as comic books.

Several U.S. auctions specialize in selling old comic books, although yours is not well-known here and won’t be high-priced. One club for collectors is the Comic Book Collectors Club (ComicBookCollectorsClub.com). *** Q: In 1973, I was working for the post office in Whitewater, Calif.

When the post office moved into a trailer, all of its furniture was sold or tossed. I was lucky enough to buy a wooden postal sorting table for $5.

100 small cubbyholes - four rows of 25. The table is 70 inches long by 26 inches deep. Including the case, it’s 64 inches high. The case is stamped on the back: “516-B Carriers Routing Case & Table, Property of the Post Office Dept., from Corbin Cab’t. Lock Co., New Britain, Conn., 1929.” We consider it a family heirloom, but would like to know what you think of it.

A: Corbin Cabinet Lock Co. was founded in 1882 and still is in business. Today it’s owned by the Eastern Co., based in Wheeling, Ill. Corbin sold all sorts of locks, post office boxes and postal furniture to the U.S. Post Office Dept. (now called the U.S. Postal Service). The 1929 date on the back of your case probably is the date the piece was made. Collectors hunt for old post office furniture like your case-table.

It could sell for more than $1,000 if it’s in excellent condition. *** Q: Can you give me any information on an Effarsee Midget Antenna? It’s built into the back of a nice picture of a tall sailing ship.

A: The Effarsee Midget Antenna is a radio antenna made by the Fishwick Radio Co. of Cincinnati. The name “Effarsee” comes from spelling out the initials (FRC) of the company’s name. Most radios made today have a built-in antenna, but early radios required an outdoor or indoor antenna to receive radio signals.

Fishwick advertised an indoor antenna in the “Citizen’s Radio Call Book” of March 1927. The ad said the antenna was easy to install, didn’t require climbing on the roof, wasn’t likely to be hit by lightning and could be hidden behind a picture or drapes or under a carpet.

The antenna was about the size and shape of a picture, and the wires were covered with plain parchment.

Condensers at each end provided tuning, range and volume. It sold by mail for $4. Your antenna combined with a picture was probably made in about 1927. *** Tip: Don’t buy collectors something for their collection. Controlling the pet population in this country is a good place to start being truly kind to animals. Each year, animals year a thousands of dogs and cats are abandoned and then killed.

Sometimes people get a pet and find out, too late, that they can’t care for it. All too often, the pet is then abandoned or left at a shelter.

1. Don’t get a pet unless you are really prepared to care for it. Read at the library about how to care for the pet you want, and then decide if you truly have the time it takes.

2. If you have a cat or dog, get it spayed or neutered so that it won’t breed and produce young.

So these unwanted pets also end up in shelters, where many of them must be put to death.

A good home for Justin would be a big house so he could __________ around. You will have fun if you get him. He will win over a bunch of people.

Scott Hagan paints barns – literally.

His artwork, his master craftsmanship, can be found all across the country.

You see, Scott turns barns into his canvas in order to create gallery worthy paintings. From abstract designs, to complex birds, to advertising that rivals the faded vestiges of our roadside past, Scott does it all. And, sadly, he’s one of the few remaining true barn artists left. There are those who “paint” barns with vinyl. Scott arrives with his truck, scaffolding, brushes, buckets of paint and his artist’s eye.

Generally, each commissioned piece of art takes about three days, depending on the prep work required. That can involve a total stripping down to the bare wood in order to achieve the proper base for the new paint. Then Scott does what he loves; he breathes new life into what many might have thought a lost cause, and leaves behind him a colorful piece of treasured Americana.

Scott also adorns gymnasiums (walls and floors) with his artistry, as well as silos, buildings, football field 50-yard lines, and just about anything else of size and substance. Whatever the client can imagine, be it mascot, logo, image, or message, Scott can make it happen. His work has received accolades in many newspapers and magazines, including The Wall Street Journal and USA Today.

Ripley’s Believe It Or Not even did an article about him. Yes, he’s that talented and dedicated to his art. And, yes, he will speak at schools and groups, depending on his availability.

DA Kentner: I know you started by painting the Ohio Bicentennial logo on barns. But what was it that convinced you to turn that endeavor into a career?

Scott Hagan: I really did not know it would turn into a career, in time it just developed into one. It was hard initially to convince myself that it was possible to have enough projects to make a living.

Today much of my success relies on people finding my website, and social media.

Artist Scott Hagan paints barns all across the country. you’ve been asked to paint, and what has been the most difficult “canvas” to work on?

SH: The most difficult areas to paint are the metal buildings. While they seem to last forever, the shape of the surface requires an extra amount of patience.

For me the most unusual image was this: In a new school’s gym, I painted a huge picture of the “Old School” with the school’s mascot coming out of it. This was the center feature of the gym!

DK: Your current personal goal is to paint a barn in every Scott Hagan turns barns into canvas in order to create state. How close are you now? gallery-worthy paintings.

DK: The detail you incorporate on such a huge scale is incredible, and you do it by hand, no air brushing. Why did you opt to hold true to the methods and techniques of the past?

SH: I like to use the brush for several reasons. For one it’s what I do best and learned on. Two, it puts the paint on thicker that way – air brushes in my experience won’t hold enough volume for the size of the area I am painting. On occasion however, I have used aerosol cans but usually for effect.

DK: What has been the strangest thing

states (I think). I’ll be adding a new state in the spring – Massachusetts; a Betsy Ross-style flag on a building. I’ll also be in the Cape Cod area in the near future.

DK: Any parting thoughts for readers or folks interested in contacting you?

SH: Sure, I am best known for painting barns, but really my skill is painting anything large on most any surface. I really enjoy painting in school gyms and facilities. The travel is also a fun perk of the job, and I hope to visit some of the west/mountain states in the future.

Overeager mother-in-law spoils surprise Family’s falling out Dear Abby: My mother-in-law sent my 7-year-old son a gift and a card for his birthday. They arrived about a week early. A few days before his birthday, she called and asked if he had received them. He said he had, but before he could explain that he hadn’t opened them, she started talking about the gift inside, revealing the surprise.

I have now “heard” she’s upset with me and my son for this awkward moment. She says that from now on she would like a phone call when her cards or gifts arrive, so she can “hear his enjoyment over the phone even if they arrive early.” I don’t think my son did anything wrong.

When a gift arrives in advance of an occasion, must it be opened immediately? Or can it wait for the actual birthday or Christmas? Sometimes he likes to open one present at a time, write a thank-you note, then open the next, stretching out his gift-opening over a few days. Is this a social no-no? – Wondering

Dear Wondering: Gifts are usually opened the day of the occasion. When the occasion is a birthday, the usual expectation is that the presents will be opened at the party. At that time a verbal thank-you is offered. A thank-you note should be written a very short time later.

Your mother-in-law may have called for reassurance that her gift had arrived. She should not have revealed what it was. You did nothing wrong. The mistake was hers.

Dear Abby: My good friend “Derek” is in his 30s and just started his first serious relationship. He told me after a week together that she was “the One” and that he loved her. I told him I was happy for him and suggested he take things slow so they

could really get to know each other.

I had a party two nights ago where he introduced his new girlfriend. They spent most of the time making out like teenagers in front of everyone. Some guests were so uncomfortable they left early.

I haven’t seen Derek since, and I’m worried not only that he’s moving too fast to make up for lost time, but that he’s doing it with someone who also is oblivious to how socially unacceptable their behavior was. Ever-present anxiety interferes with daily living Dear Doctor K: I worry a lot.

Should I be worried that I worry too much?

Dear Reader: I’m a little worried that you’re worrying about worrying. But only a little.

Anxiety (worry) can be a healthy response to uncertainty and danger. But constant worry and nervousness may be a sign of a condition called generalized anxiety disorder (GAD).

GAD is characterized by debilitating worry and agitation about nothing in particular or anything at all. In contrast, other types of anxiety disorders, such as specific phobias, arise from particular situations. For example, some people become suddenly very worried if they see a spider – any spider, not just a black widow or a tarantula.

People with GAD tend to worry about everyday matters. They can’t shake the feeling that something bad will happen and they will not be prepared. They may worry to excess about missing an appointment, losing a job or having an accident. Like you, some people worry about worrying too much.

Physical symptoms are common in people with GAD. They can include a racing heart, dry mouth, upset stomach, muscle tension, sweating, trembling and irritability.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff Does this sound like you? If so, see your doctor. He or she will probably ask you to describe exactly what you mean when you say that you feel anxious. Are you worried much of the time? Do you become frightened in particular situations? Do you have physical sensations, such as sweating or palpitations, along with emotional symptoms? The answers to these questions will help your doctor determine whether you have an anxiety disorder, and if so, which one.

As part of the checkup, the doctor will evaluate whether you have depression. That’s because anxiety and depression often coexist. He or she may order tests to check whether your symptoms have a medical cause.

Often a primary care physician will refer you to a psychiatrist or psychologist for a final diagnosis and treatment.

If you have GAD, therapy can help. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is particularly helpful.

CBT helps people recognize when they are misinterpreting events, exaggerating difficulties and mak-

ing overly negative assumptions.

This form of therapy can help you learn new ways to respond to anxiety-provoking situations.

Medications can also be an important part of treatment. There are several widely prescribed anxiety medicines, too many to name in a short column, but the most common types of anxiety medicines are called benzodiazepines.

Doctors commonly prescribe antidepressant drugs to treat anxiety. There are even more anti-depressant medicines than anxiety medicines. They can be particularly effective when a person suffers both from anxiety and depression.

In my experience, many people suffer from GAD. They worry all the time, and it interferes with their lives – but they don’t seek help. I see them among my friends, family and colleagues.

When it’s appropriate, I suggest they seek help. They don’t often take my advice. That’s a shame, because treatment really can be effective. So, I hope you will seek help to relieve your anxiety.

Since then, I have not seen my grandfather or my grandmother.

I really love them, and it makes me sad that I can’t be with them. My mom is very stubborn and refuses to have any contact with grandpa.

Last week, my mother got a call from Grandma saying that Grandpa is very ill and that he wants to see me and make peace with my mom. I was excited because I thought that I would see Grandpa and Grandma again and that Mom and Grandpa would be friends.

But this is not going to happen. Mom told me she was not going to see her father and that if he died, she wouldn’t attend his funeral.

I told my mom that I wanted to see my grandparents and find out about Grandpa’s illness, but she said that she wouldn’t drive me there. If I went, I’d have to have someone else do the driving. I called my dad (my parents are divorced), and he said that he would be glad to drive me to and from my grandparents’ house. He also said that he would like to see his former in-laws because he likes them.

Even though Mom said I could see my grandparents, she is upset that I called my dad. Should I call Dad and tell him that it’s best if he didn’t pick me up?

I’m 14 and still have four more years living with Mom, so I don’t want her mad at me for all this time. What should I do?

How would you critique the auction? North’s response of two no-trump was the Jacoby Forcing Raise, showing at least game-going values with four or more spades. South’s three-club rebid indicated a singleton or void in that suit.

First, although North’s hand has only nine high-card points, with three first-round controls, it is worth a game-force in spades. (The hand has only seven losers: two spades, two diamonds and three clubs.) It is not normal to start with the Jacoby Forcing Raise when having a short suit. It is typical to respond with a splinter bid, but North and South were treating a four-heart response as natural, not showing heart shortness and spade support.

On this deal, though, two notrump should have worked well because North heard that his side had at most one club loser, not the three he was initially worried about. Now he should have control-bid three diamonds or made a four-heart splinter bid. North’s jump to four spades was discouraging. (Yes, he was worried that he had only nine points, but the auction had told him that his hand was worth far more.)

Six spades made easily, South taking six spades, five diamonds and a heart ruff in the dummy.
