Negotiations heating up in Kaneland KANELAND CONNECTION Al Lagattolla SUGAR GROVE – The president of Kaneland’s school board said Monday she was hopeful negotiations between School District 302 officials and the Kaneland Education Association can continue, if necessary, during the upcoming winter break.

The board’s president, Teresa Witt, read prepared comments at Monday night’s school board meeting at Kaneland Harter Middle School in Sugar Grove. Meanwhile, the KEA’s assistant chief negotiator, Tim Larsen, read a prepared statement of his own, featuring a harsh tone that suggested that it seemed like board members will “continue your unnecessary game of chicken with the KEA.” Contract negotiations between the two sides are continuing, with a session set for Thursday, as they work on a collective bargaining agreement. On Tuesday, Patrick Crimmins, the chairman of the district’s citizen advisory committee, resigned his position. In his letter, sent to board members, he stated it is “appalling and irresponsible” that teachers have had to wait since April to get a contract done.

“Regardless of what happens when, the injury to morale here is great,” Crimmins wrote. “It may not recover.

On Monday, Larsen criticized the school board for “being terrible stewards of the community’s money.” Teachers have said they hope to improve teacher retention by boosting the base salary and that the district has money in reserves that could accomplish that. Also, they have noted – despite two recent pay freezes – that has not resulted in savings for taxpayers, as the district continues to collect the maximum amount possible in property taxes to build its reserves.

Last month, KEA members voted “in favor of moving forward with an intent to strike.”

The board’s position is that teachers have been offered a fair raise. Witt said teachers would see a salary increase of between 15 percent to 18 percent over the three-year contract. She also said the number of nontenured teachers at Kaneland is 30 percent, less than Geneva (49 percent) and Batavia (32 percent).

She said the reserve funds are necessary, especially because of “our state’s precarious financial position and the possibility of a property tax freeze and shift of teacher pension costs from the state to local school districts.”

Larsen, however, said that isn’t the best use of the district’s funds.

“If you’re not going to spend the taxpayers’ money on maintaining a quality staff to provide that excellent education and reinstating the programs cut for students, then I say give that money back to the taxpayers,” he said. “They will do better things with all of that money for the community than you will.”

ST. CHARLES – A St. Charles District 303 grad did not win a nationally televised singing competition Tuesday, but he is forever grateful for the experience.

Jeffery Austin, 24, finished in fourth place on the ninth season of NBC’s “The Voice.”

The results were announced Tuesday night in the last few minutes of a four-hour, twopart finale that began Monday.

Kentucky native Jordan Smith, 22, received enough votes to be declared the winner of the show.

Austin, whose real last name is McClelland, graduated from St. Charles North High School in 2009. He said he auditioned for the show in January on a whim and survived multiple eliminations to become one of the show’s four finalists.

“From the bottom of my heart, thank you for getting me here and giving me the most amazing experience of my life,” Austin wrote Tuesday night on his Twitter account after the show. “I’ve loved every minute.”

Austin sang multiple times on the show Monday and Tuesday. He performed Don Henley and Stevie Nick’s song “Leather and Lace” with Gwen Stefani, his “Voice” coach and No Doubt singer.

On Tuesday Austin and singer Tori Kelly performed a duet of her song “Hollow.” He also sang Amy Winehouse’s song “Tears Dry on Their Own” with fifth-place contestant Madi Davis.

Austin did not appear to walk away from the show empty-handed. In a previously taped segment airing Tuesday, the finalists walked out

Public hearing set on proposal for former Cetron factory site in Geneva

bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A proposal to build a five-story, 219-unit apartment building at the former Cetron property on Richards Street has some neighbors concerned.

The Geneva Plan Commission will have a public hearing on the proposal at 7 p.m. Thursday at Geneva City Council chambers at 109 James St., Geneva.

The 4.5-acre project, proposed by Marquette Companies in Naperville, includes the extension of Seventh Street north from West State Street to Peyton Street, changing it from a T-intersection to a four-way intersection.

The proposal also includes a 353-space parking structure, 106 surface parking spaces and a 5,940-squarefoot retail building, as well as amenities, such as a pool, courtyard, dog run and bike washing area, according to the nearly 300-page proposal.

Teresa Keenan, who lives in the 500 block of Peyton Street, is among those who are concerned about the project.

“I think that we do need some apartment-style homes in downtown Geneva,” Keenan said. “I don’t think [an apartment building] will go unfilled. But that development is too big, too many stories tall. It should be scaled back down … to three stories.”

Keenan said she plans to be at Thursday’s hearing.

Michael Olesen, the owner of Stockholm’s in Geneva, who lives in the 200 block of North Sixth Street, said he also plans to attend.

“I have many concerns about the scope of the project, but I am waiting for more information from [developers] and making an informed decision then,” Olesen said.

Peyton Street on the north, State Street on the south, Richards Street on the west, and Seventh Street – once it’s extended north – to the east. The redevelopment proposal also includes a parcel at the southeast corner of the extended Seventh and Peyton streets, according to the proposal.

The company demolished the former Cetron light-bulb factory in March.

Marquette’s project management director, Jeff Prosapio, did not return voice mail messages seeking comment.

City staff could not comment, spokesman Kevin Stahr stated in an email.

“Given the scope of this project, city staff has spent the better part of a year reviewing and working with the builders on the proposed development,” Stahr stated in the email. “The public hearing Thursday is the next step in the development process, and gives community members their first of sev-

eral opportunities to weigh in on the matter.”

The nine-item agenda includes various text amendments to the city’s adopted Downtown Station-Area Master Plan, to its zoning map and to its zoning ordinance, a request for rezoning, preliminary and final approval of a planned unit development.

Plan commission Chairman Dave Rogers said the hearing might have to be continued another night, depending on how Thursday’s session goes.

“It’s really difficult to anticipate what is going to happen, [but] if we’re not going to finish Thursday, we might cut things off at 10 p.m.,” Rogers said. “It’s very possible that this is going to take more than one meeting.”

Rogers said that even if the hearing concludes this week, the commission would not vote that night, as it typically defers action to the following meeting.

Mayor Kevin Burns said he welcomes the discussion about the Marquette proposal, as the city has been “contemplating and embracing opportunities to increase housing in the downtown area.”

“This proposal has been a long time coming and gone through many iterations,” Burns said. “Thursday is the first full-blown introduction to the community. Compliments and concerns can be recorded and shared. We look forward to the conversation.”

But Burns cautioned that the conversation should be “based on facts.”

“My hope is that the conversation that takes place at the plan commission and ensuing Committee of the Whole and the City Council are fact-based. And that citizens and elected officials and appointed officials refrain from hyperbole,” he said.

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A continued hearing on a proposed drug and alcohol treatment center near Campton Hills drew another crowd of about 100 people to the branch court in St. Charles.

The Kane County Zoning Board of Appeals continued the hearing after nearly four hours of testimony Monday, and an additional three hours Tuesday – without finishing.

ZBA Chairman Joseph White said the hearing will continue at 7 p.m. Jan. 19 at the same location.

Maxxam Partners LLC is seeking a special use to convert the former Glenwood School for Boys, at 41W400 Silver Glen Road, into a 120-bed private pay, luxury treatment center.

Among members of the public who testified against the facility was Patricia Hartmann of Plato Center, whose farm fields are about a mile from the proposed treatment center.

“I’m speaking for a lot of the farmers, a lot of the neighbors in the area,” Hartmann said.

“In my opinion, a rehab drug center … is not good for our area, and neither is it good for them. I feel a center of this type should be located near a hospital.”

Hartmann said the site would be better suited to what the Glenwood School was, possibly a boarding school or academy, or as a college field study campus, a retirement facility, retreat center, or business or environmental center for studies.

“I don’t wish to be known as the home of the second largest drug rehab center in the state,” Hartmann said. “I vote against Maxxam coming in and developing a drug rehab [facility]. I state my disagreement, and I hope you vote against it.”

In other testimony, Deric Wahlgren, a security consultant with Alarm Detection

Systems Inc. in Aurora, said his company’s security proposal included a license plate video of all vehicles coming in and out, monitoring of all building exteriors with key fob controlled access and thermal imaging in a virtual fence that can detect movement.

Wahlgren said with this technology, it takes seconds for police to be notified if necessary.

BATAVIA – A bookkeeping business that operates out of a home is looking to expand its reach and eventually move into a space in downtown Batavia, its owner said.

Jessica McGrail is the owner of Dollar and Sense Bookkeeping Inc. in Batavia.

She offers multiple services from her home office, including bookkeeping, payroll, administrative services, QuickBooks and more.

“I decided that this was the time to start to grow a little bit,” McGrail said.

McGrail said her clients include Batavia businesses, such as Glen Galis Concrete Contractor and a few restaurants in Naperville.

McGrail’s mother, Jennifer Weber, started the business in 2000 under the name Geneva Business Services on Houston Street. McGrail worked for her mother on a part-time basis during her high school and college years, according to the business’

website.

When Weber died unexpectedly in 2009, McGrail said she lost her mother and her best friend. Weber’s clients at the time asked whether McGrail would continue her mother’s work. McGrail accepted the challenge and moved her family to Batavia. “[It] is such a wonderful place,” McJessica Grail said.

Anthony J. Brenner, 95, formerly of Palatine and Barrington, was born Aug. 21, 1920, in Kansas City, MO to Anthony and Anna (nee Ehrenreich) Brenner.

He passed away peacefully on Saturday, Dec. 12, 2015. Anthony was a graduate of St. Louis University and spent 30 years as an English professor at Wilbur Wright College. He was also an adjunct professor at Harper College and DePaul University. In addition to his love of literature, he enjoyed classical music, woodworking, gardening, golf and daily word puzzles.

Harold Thomas “Tom” Cadell Jr., 80, passed away at Delnor Community Hospital, Geneva, IL, on Sunday, Dec. 13, 2015.

Tom is survived by his wife of 58 years, Loretta Young Cadell, who he married Nov. 9, 1957, in Lansing, IL. He is also survived by his children, Timothy P. Cadel, his wife, Sandra, and son, Alex, his daughter; Peggy Anne, her husband, Michael Guillory, and children; Jamie Biggers, Jacob and Josie Guillory, son, Patrick E. Born: Nov. 6, 1960; in Geneva, IL Died: Dec. 10, 2015; in N. Aurora, IL Kathleen “Kathy” Totz Doan, age 55, of North Aurora, loving wife of Douglas Kent Doan and loving mother to Amber Kathleen Doan, passed away on Dec. 10, 2015, after a four and a half year battle with cancer.

Kathy was born in Geneva, on Nov. 6, 1960, to Clay and Marcia Totz. Kathy graduated from Geneva Community High School and went on to receive a Bachelor of Arts degree in French and Business from Northern Illinois University. She married to Doug Doan on May 9, 1987, and gave birth to her daughter, Amber, on June 15, 1988.

Most recently she was employed as a substitute teacher through Kane County, working primarily with special education classrooms. She became well-known and loved by many students. Her love of art, interior design, literature and beauty, as well as her faith, were an inspiration to the people that knew her. Though she thought of motherhood as her greatest success, she will be remembered for her thoughtfulness, kindness and sensitivity toward many people.

Kathy is survived by her parents, Clay and Marcia Totz; her husband, Doug Doan; her daughter, Amber Doan; her brother, Terry Totz; her sister, Marcia Hodge; a granddaughter due to be born on Feb. 25, 2016; and her cat, Edward.

MARJORIE A. HOLBROOK Born: April 13, 1934 Died: Dec. 14, 2015

Marjorie A. Holbrook of Batavia, age 81, died Dec. 14, 2015, at Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights, IL. She was born April 13, 1934, in Aurora, the daughter of Carl and Vera (Johnson) Anderson and lived her entire life in Batavia. During her first 10 years, she lived on Batavia’s west side in a house built by her grandfather, Nels Emmanuel Johnson, before her mother was born. The house had been remodeled in the 1920s by her father to include a modern kitchen, indoor bathroom and closets in the bedrooms.

Marj attended Grace McWayne and Louise White Elementary schools and Batavia High School where she graduated in 1952; it was the first class to graduate from the “new” gymnasium.

In high school she played violin in the orchestra and sang with the choir.

After graduation, she began working for the Beacon-News in Aurora as a file clerk and then became a reporter. In the early 1960s, she worked for a time as editor of the Batavia Herald, but returned to the Beacon in 1967. She was a reporter and section editor for the Beacon and later The Daily Courier News in Elgin until she retired in 1999.

During her newspaper career, she won several awards including those from Associated Press, Illinois Press Association, Men’s Fashion Association and Copley Newspapers’ Ring of Truth Award in 1979 for investigative reporting.

She and Harold Holbrook were married Dec. 13, 1953, in Batavia; he died in 2009. Shortly after their marriage they had a house built on South Prairie Street by her father, Carl Anderson, who was a well-known Batavia contractor. Over the years, three additions were added to the original four room house. Marj lived in the house until 2014 when she moved to the Lutheran Home in Arlington Heights, IL. Marj and Harold had six children and eight grandchildren. Their four sons and spouses are: Dan and Linda Holbrook of Aurora; John and Connie Holbrook of North Aurora and their children, Ashley and Tony Walz of Plano, Whitney and Ryan of Plano, Patrick (P.J.) of North Aurora, and Lt. Matthew

McConnell USAF Colorado Springs, Co; James and Vicky Holbrook of Geneva and daughter Meagan of Fairfax, VA; Robert and Mary Holbrook of Huntley.

Marj, was a long-time member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, where she sang in the choir for many years and served on several committees. She was a faithful volunteer at the Batavia Food Pantry and the Batavia Depot Museum and also wrote articles for the Batavia Historian, the food pantry and her church.

Kaneland board approves levy

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Kaneland’s school board on Monday night approved its 2015 tax levy, with a 5-2 vote.

The total operating levy is $44.15 million, according to Kaneland School District 302 documents. Associate Superintendent Julie-Ann Fuchs said the district expects to receive $42.7 million of that. Including more than $10 million in bonds and interest, the total levy is listed at $54,636,680.

There was little discussion of the levy during Monday’s meeting, as board members previously had approved a tentative levy. The same two board members who opposed the tentative levy – Ryan Ker-

ry and Pedro Rivas – voted no Monday. There were no comments during Monday’s public hearing on the levy.

During previous discussions on the levy, in October, Fuchs said that for some, the tax bill could go down. For a house valued at $200,000, for example, she said at the time, the bill could be $150 less than it was in 2014.

However, she said, if a home’s value increased, then the new assessed value would be used to calculate the tax bill.

On Monday, Rivas acknowledged the argument that if the district doesn’t seek the maximum amount possible, it loses that money every year. But, Rivas said, “on the other side from the households … they see an increase that never goes away.”

Evan is a senior guard on the St Charles East basketball team. Evan led the Saints to a 3-1 record at the the STCE Ron Johnson Thanksgiving Basketball Tournament where he was named to the All-Tournament Team.

As a captain of the girls swim team, Myanna qualified for the IHSA State Meet for the third year in a row. This year she made the All-State Team, placed 10th in the 200 Freestyle, and 6th in the 100 Butterfly. She also took down her old record in the 100 Butterfly this year.

Myanna is an outstanding student and building leader and has a great work ethic.

Dylan, a Junior on the boys bowling team, continues to be a leader. He recently finished 10th individually, averaging 222 for 6 games, in the 48 team Plainfield North Tournament on November 21st.

Her consistent good play and hard work were the key to victories against LaSalle-Peru and Pontiac as she scored 20 and 19 points respectively. Morgan’s leadership has played just as big a part as her skills on the court, and is why she is the Stars Player of the Month.

SUGAR GROVE – A 20-year-old Aurora man was injured Tuesday morning when he was struck from behind by another car while he was pushing his car, police said.

Sugar Grove Police Chief Pat Rollins said the injured man was pushing a 2010 Toyota Yaris in the westbound lanes between the on and off ramps of Galena Boulevard over Route 56 when he was struck about 9:30 a.m.

Police are not identifying the injured man until after his family is notified, Rollins said. The injured man was flown to Advocate Good Sa-

maritan Hospital in Downers Grove with life-threatening injuries, Rollins said.

Galena Boulevard is two lanes in each direction, with turn lanes. The speed limit is 50 mph, Rollins said.

Jorge Espinosa, 18, of the 500 block of Wingpointe Drive, Aurora, was driving a 2007 Chevrolet Malibu, which struck the Yaris driver from behind, Rollins said. Police cited Espinosa for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and not having a valid driver’s license, Rollins said.

The roadway was closed for 2 ½ hours while the Kane County accident reconstruction team assisted with diagramming and a follow-up investigation, Rollins said.

How to go (safely) in the snow Yes, winter has returned.

No one can change the weather, but – with proper preparation – many common problems associated with winter driving can be overcome.

Now is the time to be thinking about how to prepare our vehicles for all that potential cold and snow.

There is a systematic approach to prepare our vehicles for what is sure to come. The main areas of concern that should be on everyone’s checklist include the battery, cooling/heating system, lubrication system and above all – the tires.

The mood of the battery determines whether the engine will start eagerly or just grumble and groan. The best way to keep the battery happy is to make sure it can hold a full charge and is ready to deliver the energy needed to crank a cold, sluggish engine. A simple battery and charging system evaluation now will reveal potential cold-weather start-

The vehicle’s cooling system (aka, the “I want heat now!” system) is vital to protecting the engine from freeze damage. A 50/50 mix of antifreeze solution and water will give the engine what it needs to survive the brutal cold. Inspecting belts, hoses and other cooling system components will make sure things function as designed.

One of the more common questions associated with cold weather driving is, “How long should I let my car warm up?” It is generally agreed that a warm-up time of about 30 seconds followed by driving the car normally is better than letting it “chug away” in the driveway. Long idle times simply waste gas and contribute to deposit buildup in the engine.

In order to maximize cold weather starting and minimize internal engine wear, change the engine oil on schedule and check the level every couple of weeks or so (based on your engine’s oil consumption rate). When in doubt, use the recommended grade and type of oil endorsed by the manufacturer.

Keeping the vehicle in contact with the road and pointed in the desired direction is a top priority, and that is the primary job of the tires. While good traction is a must under all driving conditions, when snow and ice enter the picture, driving can quickly become a white-knuckle experience.

Dedicated snow tires will improve handling and traction at temperatures below 45 degrees. Regardless of tire type, all tires need two things to do their job properly: adequate air and sufficient tread. Check and adjust tire pressure every couple of weeks, and replace them now

– in my opinion – if the tread depth is at the legal limit (1⁄16 of an inch). In fact, there is ample evidence to suggest that twice that amount (1⁄8 of an inch) is the least tread depth needed for best traction, handling and stopping distance.

Now that you have a plan for making sure your vehicle is in top shape for efficient and safe winter driving, it’s worth mentioning that the best winter driving advice anyone can offer is: If the weather looks bad and you don’t have to go out, stay inside. It’s really not that long until spring.

Nuclear insecurity THE WASHINGTON POST Three times in the past 16 years – Bulgaria in 1999, France in 2001 and Moldova in 2011 – containers of highly enriched uranium have been seized by authorities, according to an article published online last month by the Center for Public Integrity, a nonprofit investigative news organization. In each case, the person holding the uranium said it was part of a larger cache for sale.

Such proffers have in the past been made by employees at nuclear facilities in the former Soviet Union who smuggled the material out of their plants. In 1992, a worker diverted about 3.3 pounds of weapons-grade uranium from a facility in Russia, taking it home bit by bit, storing it on his balcony. He was arrested at the local train station, planning to travel to Moscow to sell it.

But the three containers of highly enriched uranium have something in common that until now has been kept secret. According to the article, forensic analysis

by U.S. and French nuclear scientists strongly suggests that the materials came from the same source.

The analysis indicates all three samples were produced in the early 1990s at a Russian nuclear facility, the Mayak Production Association, located near the town of Ozersk in the Ural Mountains region of Chelyabinsk.

The uranium could have been removed in the chaotic early years after the Soviet Union collapsed, when many such facilities were poorly guarded, and it may now be anywhere.

The theft raises the unsettling possibility that someone has tried three times since

1999 to sell highly enriched uranium that could be used for a nuclear explosion or a dirty bomb. Seven people have been arrested in the three cases, but officials described them as low-level functionaries in a shadowy international ring with Moldovan and Russian connections; the seller’s identity is not known.

This is the most worrisome unresolved case of illicit trafficking in such materials anywhere in the world, the article says. It is a disturbing uncertainty in the age of terrorism.

For 2½ decades, the United States has made a serious global effort to prevent nuclear materials from falling into the wrong hands. Real progress has been achieved in securing and reducing the use of civilian highly enriched uranium, but by one estimate, 61 metric tons of it remain spread across more than 100 facilities in 25 countries.

The more difficult area for action is fissile material in military facilities, with 1,300 metric tons of highly enriched uranium and 500 metric tons of plutonium remaining worldwide at the end of 2013 – enough for tens of thousands of bombs.

President Barack Obama launched nuclear security summits in 2010, which helped galvanize cleanup and lockdown efforts, but much remains undone as the last summit approaches next spring.

Meanwhile, cooperation with Russia has collapsed.

Nuclear security is too important to be neglected. It is not just in the interests of the United States, but vital to every country that nuclear materials be made safe and kept far away from terrorists.

‘Wrestling shape’ the holy grail for multi-sport athletes

The next, he’s alone on the wrestling mat, dressed in a spandex singlet.

As a senior on the St. Charles East football and wrestling teams, McDermott has participated in both sports since he was 6 years old. He’s a veteran that’s familiar with the transition from the football field to the wrestling mat.

He’s familiar with the challenge of making weight and

building his cardiovascular conditioning. McDermott has also built skills that cross over into each sport, perhaps most importantly a focus on success that Saints wrestling coach Jason Potter said is unique to wrestling.

“Wrestling teaches athletes to compete on a different level than other sports,” said Potter, who is also the defensive coordinator for the Saints sophomore football team. “It instills a competitive edge that allows athletes to get over the fear of losing. Standing alone on a mat in front of a crowd, a wrestler is completely vulnerable.

“The fear of failure might scare some athletes away. But for those that stick with it, that grind it out through intense competition, they have a mindset where all they think about is winning. The fear of losing is gone. That’s a mindset that’s a recipe for success in every sport.”

It’s a mindset that prompts Potter to recruit East football players to the wrestling program.

“I’m a wrestler first, but I love football,” McDermott said. “In wrestling you’ve got to be mentally tough. I feel a lot more pressure. There are no

teammates to help me out on the mat. It’s just one-on-one out there.”

During a football game, McDermott is supported by 10 teammates who have spent their careers gaining weight, adding muscle and becoming more agile. It’s a stark contrast to the scene McDermott is faced with in the winter.

Humidity and sweat hang in the air of a mat room and provide a distinct smell. It’s a palpable mixture of rubber matting and exertion. Wrestlers walk around in hoodies and headgear. They jump rope or rehearse moves with a partner.

There’s a lot of action and it seems like everyone is moving all at once.

Gone is the damp grass that hosted afternoon football practices in the fall. When interviewed for a story on football audibles earlier this fall, Batavia football coach Dennis Piron said players enter the season in optimal condition, which allowed coaches to further offensive and defensive strategies.

Yet when wrestling season starts, Potter has prepared an entirely different form of practice routine.

optimal weight. Which is why Kaneland coach Joe Orosco has preached Knights wrestlers eat a balanced diet.

“There’s an ideal diet for

guys that need to maintain weight,” Orosco said. “Lean proteins from chicken, turkey and fish will help. As will fiber from vegetables and fruits. We want athletes to eat foods that provide prolonged periods of energy.”

Orosco also wants wrestlers to solely focus on what they can do to be successful on the mat. Orosco has seen the battle with a scale before a meet cost wrestlers matches.

“There’s been a lot of times where I see a guy break just stepping off the scale,” Orosco said. “You can lose a match at that point, after weighing in.”

You also can treat the weigh-in as a progression in a cycle. For some, it’s a process encompassing two sports seasons, not just one.

“We have to mentally snap into wrestling mode right away,” Potter said. “The first two weeks to transition from football to wrestling are really busy. We’ve got to make wrestling practice intense and hard. I love football and coach it, but it doesn’t come close in terms of providing the cardio needed to be a wrestler.

There’s nothing like wrestling.

Guys are just dying that first week of practice.”

In a football game there are incomplete passes, huddles between plays and timeouts. When wrestling starts, McDermott said he had different cardiovascular conditioning requirements.

“The conditioning in the two sports is a lot different,” said McDermott, an outside linebacker for the football team and the Saints’ 152-pounder during wrestling season.

“For football, you prepare for a three-hour game. But there are breaks. There are huddles and the play isn’t continuous. A wrestling match is just six straight minutes, there’s no break time. That first few weeks of wrestling I feel out of shape.”

It’s a furious six minutes that wrestlers prepare for and a grueling three hours football players face. But a focused mindset isn’t the only interchangeable skill between football and wrestling.

The close-quarters combat that takes place at the line of scrimmage happens in a split second. Offensive and defensive linemen engage in a fast and furious hand battle when the football is snapped. Receivers have defensive backs assigned to jam their route and throw it off-kilter.

When a wrestling referee blows the whistle, similar scenarios unfold. Which wrestler will gain wrist control, move an opponent’s head, escape or prevent an escape could determine the outcome of a match.

East heavyweight Max Schumann is a guard on the football team. He transitions from protecting the quarterback and opening lanes for running backs in the fall to going head-to-head with the biggest wrestlers in the state in

the winter.

As a football player that was recruited by Potter to be a wrestler as a freshman, Schumann said he’s honed the ability to hand fight more proficiently with defensive linemen, make short, quick moves in a confined space and understand leverage when lined up against a bigger, stronger opponent because of the time he’s spent on the mat in the winter.

“It’s become a lot easier for me to move someone in front of me in football,” Schumann said. “I know what it feels like to be lower than them now.

I know it takes more than strength.”

Unlike football players, wrestlers also face a continual challenge to maintain their weight. In football season

Fitzgerald expected Richmond-Burton, the two-time defending Big Northern Conference East boys basketball champion, would find a way to make it a struggle. He was right.

“I knew they were capable of doing that,” Fitzgerald said. “They’re a good-shooting team. We needed to shut them down in the fourth when they made that comeback.”

Central withstood R-B’s best shots, regrouped and held on for a 65-56 victory Tuesday night that lifted it to 7-0 overall, 2-0 in the BNC East. The Rockets closed the game on a 12-6 run over the last 4:36.

Central coach Brett Porto thought, after a few frenzied minutes as R-B hacked the lead to 53-50, the key was feeding Fitzgerald, a 6-foot-5 senior, who led all players with 22 points.

“We talked throughout the game about trying to get Ryan the basketball, let him make decisions,” Porto said. “With his skill level, we could get him attacking himself or have him get it to guys attacking the hoop.”

It was mainly Fitzgerald’s passing in the fourth quarter that helped Central to its first 7-0 record since Porto has been coaching.

Appearing on the MLB Network’s “High Heat” program during the winter meetings, D’backs general manager Dave Stewart acknowledged the 21-year-old Swanson’s potential ceiling but also referenced Arizona’s urgency in the National League West race in 2016 and beyond.

“Dansby Swanson is a quality young man. He’s going to be big,” Stewart told viewers.

“We think that he’s going to be a professional for a long time. … We did not give up players that weren’t good players, but in any deal that you make, somebody is going to hurt. Both sides are going to hurt a little bit. … But what is the cost to win?”

Stewart, an occasional visitor to Geneva as a player agent when the Cougars were aligned with the Oakland A’s from 2003 to 2010, traded another firstround draft pick to Atlanta during the 2015 season. Cougars and Midwest League officials support Major League Baseball’s recent recommendations to extend protective netting at ballparks.

Issuing a statement at last Dick week’s annual Nussbaum winter meetings, MLB commissioner Rob Manfred suggested teams offer screens between the near sides of both dugouts – those closest to home plate – and for all field-level seats within 70 feet of home plate.

“We feel like we’re in pretty good shape, but we’ll make all the arrangements to make sure that we’re in full compliance,” Cougars general manager Curtis Haug said Tuesday.

“It’s something that’s been discussed over the last year or two, but I think that Major League Baseball finally took a stance on it, which is good, I think.”

MWL president Dick Nussbaum felt it was an easy decision in the name of promoting fan safety, especially for a 16team league that set an attendance record by attracting 4,233,904 fans in 2015.

“I know that some of our clubs already meet or exceed some of those recommendations,” Nussbaum said. “The clubs are right now in the process of evaluating what, if anything, they need to do.”

In its release, MLB said game tickets likely will indicate whether a seat is behind protection by 2017.

“Everything revolves around the dugout and home plate area when it comes to fan interaction,” Haug said, “whether it’s pregame first pitches for fans trying to get autographs … foul balls going into the stands.”

The Class-A Cougars, entering the second season of a two-year player-development contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks, are set to host Clinton in the 2016 season opener at 6:30 p.m. April 7.

They’ll manage: Haug said the 2016 field staff could be announced “any day now,” and that D’backs officials indicated

several fresh faces likely would descend on Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.

“As of now, it looks like a whole new field staff, which will be interesting,” Haug said.

Dear Dr. K: I’m 65, and my doctor says it’s time for me to be screened for osteoporosis. But isn’t this condition painful?

Dear Reader: Osteoporosis is a condition in which bones become less dense, weaker and more likely to break. But unless it leads to a broken bone, osteoporosis is not painful.

Osteoporosis is a disease that causes no symptoms for many years – until it suddenly does. And “common sense” leads many people to ask why they should bother to have tests to diagnose it, or treatments to improve it, if it’s not causing any symptoms. The answer also is “common sense”: so it never will cause you symptoms.

Most people with undiscovered and (therefore) untreated osteoporosis have never had a fracture. That means they’ve had no symptoms related to their weakened bones.

The gold-standard screening test for osteoporosis is “dual energy X-ray absorptiometry” (DEXA). For this procedure, a machine sends X-rays through bones in order to calculate how dense the bones are.

The density of bone is determined in large part by the amount of calcium deposited in the bone.

The process is quick, taking only five minutes.

And it’s simple: You lie on a table while an imager passes over your body.

DEXA can measure bone density at the spine, hip, wrist or total body.

The DEXA scan or ultrasound will give you a number called a T-score.

This number represents how close you are to average peak bone density in the population at large. T-score results are interpreted as follows: • If your T-score is minus 1 or greater, your

Most were about bidding, and in recent years he has updated and republished them. The latest two are “Tips on Bidding” and “Tips on Competitive Bidding” (Master Point Press).
