Polar Express runners triple in 2nd year

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Geneva resident Kevin Russell made many children and adults happy Sunday by wearing a full Santa outfit on the Fox River Trail.

At one point, a couple near the Fabyan Windmill waved him over, so he could be included in their wedding photos.

“I’m glad I could spread some Christmas cheer,” Russell said, adding that it was his girlfriend Amy McTeague’s idea to wear the Santa outfit.

Russell and McTeague, dressed as an elf, were two of the more than 275 runners in the second annual Underground Polar Express Fun Run on Sunday.

The 3.1-mile run took participants from the Batavia Riverwalk up through Geneva and back down to finish at the Batavia Pal Joey’s on the east side of the Fox River.

The run, which Batavia resident Karen Willuweit and her friends started in 2013, combines their interest in raising money for charities and their love of running.

The run benefits a different charity every year, Willuweit said. Proceeds from the first race in 2013 went to the Batavia Interfaith Food Pantry, and all of the money raised from Sunday’s race will go to Batavia-based Suicide Prevention Services of America.

STC incumbents, newcomers file for election

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com Several incumbents and two new faces have filed Monday to run for various St. Charles public offices in the April 7 consolidated election, according to paperwork filed Monday in the various offices.

St. Charles resident Trish Beckjord is running for one of three open commissioner seats with four-year terms on the St. Charles Park Board.

The seats of board Presi-

dent Bob Thomson, board Secretary Nancy Cox and board Treasurer Jim Cooke are up for re-election in April. As of Monday, only Thomson and Cooke had filed to run again.

St. Charles Library District resident Anne Francissen is running for one of three open seats with four-year terms on the district’s library board.

The seats of board Treasurer Norman Huntley and Trustees Michael Hill and Daniel Prath are up for re-election in April. As of Monday, the only

library board incumbents that had filed to run were Prath and Hill.

The St. Charles City Council alderman candidates that filed Monday included incumbents Dan Stellato of Ward 1, Rita Payleitner of Ward 2, Todd Bancroft of Ward 3 and Ed Bessner of Ward 5. Steve Gaugel, a current St. Charles Plan Commission member, filed Monday to run in Ward 4.

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Former Batavia High School social studies teacher John Dryden is among eight candidates running for three seats on the Batavia School Board in April.

Monday was the first day for candidates to file for the April 7 consolidated election. They have until Monday to file their nominating petitions.

Because all Batavia school board candidates filed at 8:30 a.m., there will be a lottery at 10 a.m. Friday at the Kane County Clerk’s Office to determine ballot placement.

Dryden recently retired

from Batavia School District 101. He made local and national headlines last year when he instructed his students that they had the Fifth Amendment right not to incriminate themselves before answering an in-class survey about emotional and atrisk behavior.

In addition, Batavia School Board President Cathy Dremel filed to run for re-election, along with board member Melanie Impastato, who was appointed to the board in June 2013 after the resignation of school board member Kathleen Roberts.

Other Batavia School Board candidates include William “Bill” Gabriel, Ellen Knautz, Christopher Lowe, Michelle Olache and Ron Rechenmacher.

Dinwiddie filed a nominating petition for the 1st Ward, and 3rd Ward Alderman Dan Chanzit, 4th Ward Alderman Susan Stark, 5th Ward Alderman Lucy Thelin Atac and 7th Ward Aldermen Dave Brown filed for re-election.

In addition, Michael Russotto and Ron Rechenmacher filed to run in the 6th Ward.

There were no candidate submissions Monday in Campton Hills, wrote John Strauss, interim village clerk, in an email. Three candidates who filed Nov. 21 to run for trustee seats and one who filed to run for village president were challenged by Village President Patsy Smith. A hearing on the candidate petition objections is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Dec. 23 at Congregational United Church of Christ, 40W451 Fox Mill Blvd., Campton Hills.

Geneva hopefuls file for offices

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Candidates for various offices in Geneva filed nominating papers Monday, the first day to file for the April 7 consolidated election.

Four filed to run for three open four-year terms on the Geneva District 304 School Board – incumbents Mary Stith and Kelly Nowak and newcomers Taylor Egan and Evelyn Schneider.

Six filed for alderman in Geneva, including incumbents 3rd Ward Aldermen Dean Kilburg and Mary Seno

and 5th Ward Alderman Craig Maladra.

Also filing were Pat Lenski for the 1st Ward and both James Radecki and Eleanor Hamilton for the 4th Ward.

Radecki previously served as alderman.

Those filing to run for the Geneva Public Library board are incumbents Zachary Craft and Robert Shiffler, and newcomers Ellen Fultz-Schmid and Dana Hintz.

The library board has one two-year term and four fouryear terms that are up.

No one has yet filed for two vacancies on the Geneva Park Board.

COVER STORY From lawman to Catholic deacon Ramsey now serving at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Batavia

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – The Kenneth Ramsey most people know is a tough guy.

He was a lawman for 35 years, first in Batavia, then as a sheriff’s deputy, eventually serving as sheriff of Kane County from 1994 to 2006.

Ramsey also was a soldier, with 41 years in the U.S. Army and having served in Vietnam.

He spent 10 years at the Pentagon and 10 years teaching at the U.S. Army Intelligence School. Ramsey was in training for Desert Storm when the operation ended, he said.

In retirement, the lifelong Batavia resident began a third career, that of deacon at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Batavia. He was ordained through the Diocese of Rockford on Sept. 27 after six years of instruction and preparation. As a deacon, he can marry, bury and give blessings.

Now at 66, instead of sleeping late, he assists at 6:30 a.m.

Mass every weekday, as well as on Saturday and twice on Sunday. On Tuesday nights, he teaches a class for adults who are converting to Catholocism. On Wednesday nights, he teaches religious education to eighth-graders.

Although deacons in the Chicago and Joliet dioceses are allowed to wear the clerical collar, the diocese deacons do not. Ramsey said he follows a national trend of deacons wearing gray because priests wear black. His shirt has a deacon’s cross on it, a cross draped with a red sash.

Through the Holy Cross St. Michael Ministry of Compassionate Care, Ramsey also helps plan funeral services, does prayers for funerals and visits those who are homebound, sick and dying.

“I have experienced unusually high amounts of death and destruction in my life,

having been both a soldier and a policeman,” Ramsey said. “I have experience with a lot of death and destruction and people at the worst time of their life – when their loved ones are dying, when they are dying. I just feel that is where I am called to serve God, with the sick and the dying.”

Ramsey’s wife of 43 years, Peg, said she is excited for him in this role.

“It’s not a new profession; it’s a calling from God,” she said. “He served the public.

He served his country. This is a continuation of service, to serve God and the community at Holy Cross. It’s a gift he discerned he had, to serve in this capacity.”

The Rev. Jim Parker, pastor at Holy Cross, praised Ramsey as a deacon.

“I’m just delighted,” Parker said. “He knows the community; he knows the people. He is loved by the community. He is trusted by the community.”

••• The middle child of three, Ramsey was an altar boy under the late Monsignor William Donovan, the Holy Cross priest for whom Donovan Bridge was named in Batavia.

He grew up in the subdivision known as Batavia Highlands, which is in Geneva School District 304, so he graduated from Geneva High School, Class of 1966.

His mother was devout; his father was not, as Ramsey recounted in the story of his faith journey, “From Carrying the Badge to Carrying the Cross,” which he shares during public speaking engagements.

“He was a volatile, brutal person that beat all of us regularly,” Ramsey wrote about his father. “In fact, my father once pushed me out of the car in front of a church one Sunday without stopping because I insisted on going to Mass.

Ramsey said his mother took her children to church, but she could not receive the sacrament of communion until the church annulled her marriage.

As he was growing up, Ramsey said he went to seminary when he was 17, but that only lasted a few months.

“I knew that I had an attraction for my faith,” Ramsey said. “But I was not called to be a priest.”

••• Becoming a deacon was not the original plan, Ramsey said.

“My wife and I were going to move down to southern Illinois. We bought a house and we were planning to move down there,” Ramsey said.

“That’s when our son got sick.”

On Jan. 9, 2008, his 32-yearold son, Kenneth Jr., was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer, a totally inoperable, stage 4 neuroblastoma, he said. The couple had four living children, Ramsey said, noting they lost a fifth child who was stillborn, so facing the loss of another child was devastating.

“The day we found out about his tumor, the doctors said it would be best if I was the one to tell him,” Ramsey said.

He went to the chapel at

Delnor and began praying.

“And I got thinking, here I am asking God to give me the strength and the right words to tell my son and the rest of my family that he’s dying.

Why would God do anything for me? What have I done for God? And I told God, regardless of what occurred with my son, that I was going to dedicate the rest of my life to try to be a better person and serve Him and do what I could.”

The Ramseys set their plans aside, sold the downstate house and stayed in Batavia to be with their son. They saw him through chemotherapy and radiation and waited for the end.

“Miraculously, the tumor disappeared three years ago.

He’s cancer-free right now ... seven years now in January,” Ramsey said. “The doctors say most likely it will come back, and more often than not, it does come back, especially brain tumors. God has been great.”

It wasn’t long after his son’s diagnosis that Ramsey began to listen to people who told him he’d be a good deacon. He said he’d heard it for years but never took it seriously.

“That night after I prayed, it seemed to sound different.

Maybe God would like me to do that,” he said. “Maybe this is His way of calling me to it, having people insisting, every time I turned around, ‘Ken,

ever think of becoming a deacon?’ ” ••• Ramsey was 60 when he started the diaconate instruction process, five years older than when the church wants its deacons to be ready to serve. Ramsey said he received a waiver for his age.

Twice a week, every Tuesday evening and every Saturday all day long, for six years, Ramsey drove out to Rockford.

“It’s a lot of theology, a lot of philosophy. All the rules, regulations, laws of the Catholic Church,” Ramsey said.

“You have to write papers, take tests. It’s a very intense process .... I learned more of the in-depth knowledge of what Roman Catholicism is.”

Deacons are ordained members of the clergy, Ramsey said. Most are married, but they also take a vow of celibacy. If their wives die before they do, they can never remarry.

He also spent an extra year in study to learn the Byzantine Catholic rite.

“Whenever I get my permissions to function as a Byzantine deacon, as well as a Roman deacon, I would be the first and only bi-ritual deacon in the Rockford diocese,” Ramsey said.

Deacons in the Byzantine church cannot marry, bury or baptize or give blessings. Instead, their role is in the Divine Liturgy – known as the Mass in Roman Catholicism – reading from a 40-page script of prayers.

Ramsey would be allowed to serve as both types of deacons, should he get the proper permissions.

At Holy Cross, his main role as deacon is to proclaim the gospel every day and preach every Tuesday.

Ramsey said he would remain a deacon and not consider becoming a priest.

“Priests are very special in my mind. It takes a very special man to be a priest, and I don’t think that would be me,” Ramsey said. “I’m better in the world that I’m in.”

SUGAR GROVE – Todd Leden will be the next superintendent at Kaneland School District 302.

Leden, 47, currently is the principal and associate superintendent at Fenton Community School District 100. He emerged as the successful candidate after BWP and Associates conducted a search for a new superintendent after the Todd departure of Jeff Leden Schuler, who left early in the school year to become the superintendent at Wheaton Warrenville District 200. Renee Goier has been serving as the Kaneland district’s interim superintendent.

Cheryl Krauspe, president of the Kaneland school board, stated in a news release that Leden had a background “rich with high-quality, challenging experiences, which make him the ideal candidate to lead district initiatives and drive improvements, while building on the excellent foundation of the Kaneland school community.”

Leden will begin working in Kaneland on July 1. Last week, at a session when community members were invited to meet candidates, Leden indicated he would be based at the Fenton district for the remainder of the school year, as there is a major construction project in place that he wants to guide to com-

pletion. The other candidate introduced to the public was DJ Skogsberg, the current superintendent of Taft School District 90 in Lockport.

In the release, Leden stated he was “honored and privileged to be the next superintendent of Kaneland District 302.”

“I look forward to the duty and responsibility of working with a dedicated staff of district professionals, community members, parents and students to provide an education experience that all stakeholders will be proud of,” he stated in the release.

Leden has ties to the Tri-Cities area, having previously served as an athletic director, teacher and coach at Geneva High School.

At last week’s meeting, he spoke of a familiarity with the Kaneland district, saying he regularly attends the annual Sugar Grove Corn Boil festival and shops at Ream’s Elburn Market.

According to the release, Leden’s “emphasis on building relationships through effective communication, combined with his extensive administrative experience and collaborative leadership approach, made him a standout among those considered.”

“He epitomizes the quality of leadership required for public education today,” Krauspe stated in the release. “The entirety of his administrative and educational experiences have prepared him to fulfill the responsibilities of our Kaneland superintendency.”

North Aurora OKs demolition of Activity Center

NORTH AURORA – The North Aurora Activity Center will soon see the wrecking ball.

Trustees voted Monday to approve a $355,739 contract with Site Recovery Services Inc. to demolish the building at 1 N. Lincolnway. The North Aurora Activity Center has been closed since March because of structural damage.

Trustees in May decided the building was not worth saving.

The village will pay for the demolition from the insurance money received for the village’s property loss – $68,764 – as well as funds from the closing of the North Aurora Activity Center fund – $92,002. Other funds will come from reserves in the village’s capital projects fund.

Demolition of the building is expected to start in early February, following asbestos removal and the removal of underground storage tanks, Village Administrator Steve Bosco said.

Trustees on Monday also approved an ordinance permitting village staff to dispose of or sell surplus items from the building.

“Some of the items such as bricks with carvings may be retained by the village for historical purposes and other bricks can be made available for residents who would like to have a historical memento of the building,” Bosco told village trustees.

The building is not currently within a tax increment financing district, but the TIF statutes provide that costs associated with redevelopment, including demolition costs, may be eligible for future reimbursements with TIF funds if those costs are included as part of a future redevelopment plan, North Aurora Finance Director Bill Hannah told trustees.

The North Aurora Activity Center at 1 N. Lincolnway remains closed because of structural damage to the roof’s building. Engineers have been analyzing the structural integrity of the entire building.

Trustees on Monday also approved an ordinance approving the demolition costs for reimbursement through tax increment financing funds.

“It doesn’t obligate you, it simply provides the mechanism in the future,” Hannah said.

Share and Care Learning Center, which was one of the main tenants in the North Aurora Activity Center, found a new permanent home in the former Rainbow Tile building at 12 John St. in North Aurora.

The North Aurora Activity Center originally served as North Aurora Grade School from 1933 to 1968.

The Friday Nite Spot – a volunteer-run activity for fourth- through eighth-grade students – also has been housed at the North Aurora Activity Center.

Bosco told trustees Monday that discussions are ongoing to find a new home for Friday Nite Spot.

No one wants to hear they have a cavity. Follow these guidelines to properly care for your teeth and reduce your chance of tooth decay.

Your mouth harbors lots of bacteria. Combine that bacteria with a diet high in sugar in an acidic environment and you’ve got thriving bacteria.

“If that decay is not removed, it starts to eat away at the tooth,” said Dr. Ronald Murphy. His practice is located at 1605 W. Wilson St., Suite 114, Batavia.

A healthy diet and good oral hygiene, including regular check-ups with your dentist, is key to preventing tooth decay and cavities.

Oftentimes, as a person grows and develops through their teenage and college years, their habits lead to developing more cavities. Habits like drinking soda and other sugary drinks and straying from a regular brushing routine all contribute to tooth decay, Murphy said.

“Once they get in to the workforce and they have a regular routine and a schedule, their habits improve,” Murphy said.

Murphy advised that energy drinks and the sheer amount of sugar and their acidic properties are especially harmful to teeth.

“If you really want to get scared and be informed, look at what’s in these energy drinks,” he said.

Signs of tooth decay include sensitivity and brown or black discoloration. A chalky white stain that changes over time can also be an indicator of tooth decay.

“When someone is developing staining, we want to know why it’s turning color,” Murphy said.

Bacteria can also roughen the surface of teeth, enabling them to catch food particles and decay and stain the teeth as well. In the older population, Murphy advised that as the gums recede and darkish brown spots become visible, that is also a sign of tooth decay.

ST. CHARLES – A St. Charles city committee Monday heard a review of the city’s latest financial monthly results.

Julie Herr, the city’s assistant finance director, presented data for the month of October to the Government Operations Committee. October marks the sixth month in

the city’s current fiscal year, which began May 1.

Herr’s presentation contained a summary for each of the city’s four main operation funds – general, electric, water and wastewater.

Monday’s presentation and subsequent discussion focused on the general fund, which accounts for the majority of city operations. The city’s largest general fund revenue stream, sale and use tax,

is trending 6.3 percent above the previous year to date and trending 1.7 percent above budget for the year, Herr said.

Alcohol tax revenue is coming in ahead of the previous fiscal year’s results by 5 percent, as well as the budget by 1.2 percent. Hotel tax revenues and electric franchise fees, while showing increases over previous year-to-date results, are expected to come in under budget by 1.3 percent

and 2.5 percent, respectively, the written October report states.

Telecommunication tax revenues and state income tax disbursements are below budget predictions and the previous year results, according to the report.

GENEVA – Geneva aldermen unanimously accepted a report Monday of its prioritized goals from a November planning workshop.

Patty Gentrup, of the Novak Consulting Group, who facilitated the workshop, summarized the outcome. Gentrup said city officials adopted a

strategic plan in April with seven visions and 97 discrete goals.

“That was a little too much to tackle at one time,” Gentrup said.

GENEVA – Cathleen Tymoszenko was named the head of Geneva’s Economic Development Department, replacing Ellen Divita who resigned in October after seven years, officials said in an announcement Monday.

The Economic Development Department provides retention, recruitment and training resources to attract and help businesses grow, as well as coordinates special event permits, promotes tourism and communicates with the city’s business community.

Tymoszenko was director of community development for West Dundee since 2005.

There, she created and oversaw the department that was not only responsible for economic development, but planning, zoning, historic preser-

vation, building permits and code enforcement.

She also negotiated development approvals for newly annexed commercial, industrial and residential areas, according to the announcement.

While there, Tymoszenko spearheaded an effort to institute a tax increment finance district, securing a large-scale commercial reCathleen development, Tymoszenko and completed a new comprehensive plan for the village.

After graduating from DePaul University, Tymoszenko began her career as director of tourism for Schiller Park in 1988.

Get ready for drones The WASHINGTON POST The potential for unmanned aircraft – also known as drones – to make life easier is tantalizing, eliciting images of tiny package-delivery devices zipping around town so UPS trucks wouldn’t have to.

On the other hand, as The Post’s Craig Whitlock reported, the Federal Aviation Administration has received 25 reports of drones nearly striking manned aircraft in the past six months, often near airport runways. So, should the government crack down or loosen up? In fact, it should do both.

The FAA currently allows recreational drone operators – hobbyists – to fly their

miniature aircraft with a few restrictions, which include that they fly their drones where they can see them, away from airports and below 400 feet. The number of near-collisions, however, suggest that the FAA can’t adequately enforce those rules on the thousands of hobbyists in the United States.

Aviation experts warn about errant drones striking helicopter rotors or getting sucked into jet engines with disastrous consequences.

Meanwhile, flying drones for commercial purposes, whether to dust crops, film television shows or take videos of real estate for sale, remains mostly forbidden.

The FAA has granted a

few exceptions to its prohibition, for example to some Hollywood camera operators.

But the agency still is in the process of writing rules under which regular commercial drone flights could occur without a special exception for every operator.

(One potentially interested party is Amazon.com, which is led by Jeffrey Bezos, who also owns The Post.) The Wall Street Journal reported last month that the FAA is leaning toward a very restrictive requirement that every commercial drone operator carry a traditional pilot’s license.

Here’s what should happen instead: The FAA should finally release rules

governing commercial drone flights shorn of the absurd requirement that operators must have hours of cockpit time in real planes.

Commercial drone pilots should have adequate practice on the equipment they are actually using, and they should be up to speed on FAA rules on unmanned aircraft, air traffic control practices and how to deal with bad weather.

They don’t need to know how to land a Cessna.

If the FAA doesn’t make that clear, Congress should.

Meanwhile, the FAA also should find better ways to keep drones out of sensitive airspace. It already is tracking down operators responsible for breaking the

government’s fairly simple restrictions, and it takes pride in its efforts to educate hobbyists about the rules.

It could do more of both.

Yet, the most effective new enforcement tool also might have to come with Congress’s blessing.

Some manufacturers are already building systems into their recreational drones that prevent them from breaching the FAA’s 400-foot ceiling or getting too close to airports.

Lawmakers should give the FAA the authority to mandate that these restrictions are written into recreational drones’ firmware – and if Congress doesn’t act, the industry should do so voluntarily.

Aurora Central Catholic takes physical battle of Edgelawn

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com AURORA – Bragging rights prosper for a far greater time than either team’s commute when it comes to the Aurora Central Catholic-Rosary girls basketball rivalry.

Although the Chargers and Royals no longer share a conference, the banter between the schools doesn’t graduate, unlike a handful of program alums who helped comprise Monday’s crowd.

Visiting ACC beat Rosary, 57-43, largely behind its ability to produce longer stretches of more fluid play. Fouls and missed shots were aplenty, but the Chargers (8-1) proved to be in more frequent possession of consistency.

“We had more horses tonight,” Chargers coach Mark Fitzgerald said.

Playing for the first time in 10 days, Rosary (2-6) lost its sixth straight game as it struggled to find a rhythm.

The Royals have not won since starting the season 2-0 in their year-opening tournament.

Last week’s scheduled visit to Nazareth Academy was postponed because of a formidable flu bug that spread at Nazareth.

In any event, both the Royals and Chargers enjoyed plenty of free-throw practice, combining for 74 attempts from the line. Senior guard Kalie Soris led ACC with 14 points, while sophomore post Taylor Harazin added 13.

Rosary senior guard Quincy Kellett led all scorers with 17 points, but even she was susceptible to dry spells. The Royals didn’t register their first second-half points until Megan Conlin converted a three-point play at the 4:41 mark. The Royals still trailed, 38-23.

Rosary had just two field goals until the 5:18 mark of the second quarter, when Kellett sparked the Royals with a personal 5-0 run. Her 3-pointer with 4:33 to play before halftime brought Rosary to within 14-11, but was soon followed by an all-too-familiar sequence at the other end.

Chargers guards found the 6-foot-3 Harazin in the post for a layup that produced a threepoint play after a foul and free throw.

ACC entered the bonus with 1:55 left in the first quarter and shot 12 for 21 from the line in the first half, attacking the hoop aggressively and putting many of the Royals’ regulars in foul trouble.

Before long, however, the Chargers experienced a similar affliction, as personified by one sequence in the final minute of the first half. Soris banked in a running onehander to provide a 26-19 lead,

a play that started when freshman post Sabrina Ganofsky, a Batavia resident, swung her hands in the passing lane on an inbounds play.

Hustling back to defend moments later, Soris was whistled for her third foul. ACC led, 26-20, at the break, but both sides faced strategic shortcomings because of foul trouble.

Rosary athletic director/ public address announcer Mary Lou Kunold invited any of either school’s alumni to stand up for recognition before tipoff. A few years from now, she might get a better response when prompting participants

of this game to rise to their feet.

The lone meeting between the Edgelawn Drive neighbors this season – recent conference realignment split the traditional rivals – included plenty of meaningful minutes from reserves. One of them, Ganofsky, had eight points in her season debut. She suffered a concussion during fall league play.

“This is her first game as a varsity Charger,” Fitzgerald said. “She stepped up big.”

And helped ensure bragging rights. They’ll last a little longer this time around.

Near the end of their trip, the group of 10- and 11-yearold Chargers won the national championship for their age group, prompting a famous retort of modern sports winners great and small.

“For the kids, they’re such an ESPN generation,” Char-

gers coach John Golden said.

“The fact was after they won, a lot of them were saying, ‘I’m going to Disney World.’

Literally, our hotel was right down the street from Disney World.”

Despite that proximity, Tri-City players actually won the final three games of their 2014 season at Hillsborough Community College in Plant City, Florida, some 45 minutes southwest of Disney. Fourteen of the team’s 18 players accomplished the same feat in the cadet division in 2013, helping curtail potential distraction in The Sunshine State.

“We bring a lot of structure to it, so for the coaches and players it’s a business week,” Golden said. “For the family, it’s more like spring break.”

Part of the United Youth Football League, Tri-City encountered a far different routine last week than it did during the regular season portion of its eventual 13-1 finish.

Accustomed to playing weekly on Sundays, the Chargers arrived Dec. 5 in Florida and were required to weigh in the following morning.

The championship tournament, composed of regional winners throughout the country, began Dec. 8, when Tri-City defeated a team from Philadelphia.

Wins against foes from Staten Island, N.Y. (Wednesday) and the championship victory against a Mount Vernon, N.Y. team Friday followed. In between, Golden and his staff pored over game film and worked to balance practice time with players’

own school study sessions.

Of course, the Chargers are used to juggling classroom concepts with plenty of football jargon. The offense, led by quarterback Tommy Rittenhouse, incorporates several formations into its attack, including the Wildcat, Pistol, Pro and I. Parents chipped in to the effort, as well, rotating hotel rooms to host healthy meals throughout the week.

“I always tell people when I pick a team, I pick the parents first,” Golden said.

Golden’s son, Johnny, played center and nose guard for the Chargers, just another of the many bonds the program shared this season.

“I don’t know if I can put it into words yet what it feels like to see the kids give the effort that they did and overcome the adversity that they did. ... And then to have those memories with your son, too, it’s hard to describe,” Golden said.

For the moment, the Chargers stand atop the junior pee-wee football landscape, if not Space Mountain.

Pressure quarterbacks, study business, enjoy the underrated scenery of Oxford, Ohio.

In no particular order, that’s the looming agenda of St. Francis senior defensive end Quinn Calcagno, a St. Charles resident who committed to play his college football at Miami (Ohio) over the weekend.

The Redhawks offered Calcagno a scholarship about six weeks ago, around the time St. Francis’ run to an IHSA Class 6A state semifinal Quinn started. He Calcagno heard plenty of feedback about Miami’s Farmer School of Business in the interim, but the actual experience nearly overwhelmed him during his campus visit this past weekend.

“It’s like the Ritz,” Calcagno said. “You walk in and there’s marble walls and some kid playing piano, like Beethoven stuff. Just ridiculous.”

Miami’s program is in the midst of its own fine-tuning under coach Chuck Martin, who finished 2-10 in his first season in 2014, losing five games by one possession or less.

“Last year, they went 0-12 and this year, they’re competing in every game,” Calcagno said.

Calcagno also weighed Ivy League recruiting interest after leading the Spartans with 101 tackles and 12 sacks during a 10-3 season.

But the Bulldogs’ returning starter at point guard was sidelined by illness Monday, meaning the team had to find alternate solutions in its Oswego Hoops For The Troops tournament matchup against Thornwood.

The Bulldogs pulled through for a 44-31 win against the T-Birds.

“We normally count on [Orman] and then we help her out sometimes but we decided we were all going to do it together and just help each other out and just calm each other down with handling the ball because it’s such an important thing in the game, so we all just took the responsibility as one,” Batavia junior Shea Bayram said.

In addition to Orman’s absence, Batavia also was missing junior Emily Lasse, who sprained her ankle during Saturday’s tournament-opening loss to Naperville Central.

Batavia coach Kevin Jensen liked the way some of the Bulldogs’ reserves answered the call.

“Morgan Erickson, it gave her another start, she’s had a couple, but this was her first chance to really get a lot of time without Bethany right next to her, and I thought she played real well,” Jensen said. “I was pumped that she took one to the hole early in the game and got that layup.

She did a good job.”

Anna Rakos, a freshman who began the season on the sophomore team, also saw more time than usual. Jensen called Rakos a quality ball-handler who “knows the flow of the game pretty well.”

Batavia (6-6) led at halftime, 20-8, after Thornwood (2-8) went scoreless during a second quarter in which the T-Birds missed all six of their free throws.

The Bulldogs’ south suburban opponent lacked shooting touch but proved a difficult matchup on the glass, which kept Thornwood competitive.

“They were really good with crashing the boards and stuff,” Bayram said. “They forced us to box out because the teams we normally play it’s more of who can jump higher, but they were like ‘No, we’re going to go get it,’ so we pretty much had to fight back and show them that we’re strong and we can go grab boards, too.”

The T-Birds came as close as five points, 28-23, at the 6:20 mark of the fourth quarterbut a Bayram layup and short jumper by junior post standout Hannah Frazier slowed Thornwood’s push.

Frazier, playing in front of Division I coaches from Valparaiso and Bucknell, scored a game-high 17 points to go with 11 rebounds and three blocked shots.

Bayram added nine points, including consecutive jumpers during the second quarter.

Batavia almost lost a third key cog when forward Stephanie Rodriguez aggravated a wrist injury and left the game during the second quarter. But after testing her shot on an adjacent court in Oswego’s auxiliary gym, Rodriguez returned to open the second half.

“We give her a hard time,” Jensen said. “She’s always falling on the ground. It’s the goalie in her.”

The Bulldogs return to tournament action Wednesday against Marian Catholic.

CHICAGO – The Cubs wined Jon Lester. Sent his wife flowers. Even sent the avid hunter some camouflage hats with the Cubs logo.

“I’ve got the hat in my bag at the hotel,” the Cubs’ newest pitching said.

Team president Theo Epstein revealed he would have closed the biggest deal in franchise history if a deer stand if that’s what it would have taken. “I was prepared to soak myself in deer urine,” he said.

Turned out all it took was sincerity. Persistence. And a no-trade clause. And $155 million.

Now comes the hard part.

Lester, who will be 31 when he opens the first season of his six-year deal, has two World Series titles with the Boston Red Sox. But he was in the minor leagues when Epstein’s Red Sox busted the 86-year-old Curse of the Bambino in 2004.

The Cubs were in on Lester from the first day of free-agency, sending him a 15-minute video showing the Cubs’ plans, then were first in line to fete the three-time All-Star in a day’s worth of face-to-face meetings and presentations with top team officials.

That was the whole thing, just speed them up and get them out of their comfort zone, and I thought we did that.”

The Vikings led, 37-34, on an off-balance, high-arching 3-pointer from Navigato at the halftime buzzer.

A pair of baskets from senior guard Daniel Santacaterina had the Vikings ahead, 4135, but East took its first lead of the second half on a Jack Bronec put-back in the midst of its 21-0 blitz, which finally came to a close on a layup by Geneva’s Loudon Vollbrecht (23 points, six rebounds) to bring the Vikings within 56-43 to close the third quarter.

From there, the Vikings were cooked, particularly with Gentry running the show.

“We’re not the type of team that’s going to be able to chase a team like St. Charles East,” Geneva coach Phil Ralston said. “That’s because they’re going to try and spread you out and make it a foul-fest late.

Credit St. Charles East for being able to impose their will on us, but shame on us for allowing it to happen, too. We have some guys who have got some growing up to do.”

While the injured Temple’s potential season debut in 2015 should greatly bolster Geneva’s backcourt, Ralston is seeking improved, fundamental play from the rest of the squad in the meantime.

“I think having Pace back will make a big difference, but that’s not the only issue we have,” Ralston said. “We have other guys who need to grow up and be varsity basketball players. It’s about [setting picks], catching the ball, making good passes. A lot of our turnovers were just off of very poor pass play. That’s just the reality.”

The Saints had four starters in double figures, with Mick Vyzral (15 points), Asquini (11) and Evan DiLeonardi (10) joining Gentry.

Junior wing James McQuillan returned after missing four-plus games with a concussion, chipping in five points in limited time off the bench.

The first step for any customization, Roppo says, “before I even look at the car, is to meet with the customers and discuss what they want to accomplish. We can do a restoration for $15,000, or it can exceed $200,000. It all depend how much the customer wants to restore or change. When you’re customizing cars, many parts need to be individually made to

fit and work well.”

Roppo makes sure he and the customer are clear on the goals and cost, to avert any surprises and fulfill the customers’ expectations. He encourages customers to be involved in every step of the customization, and invites them to watch and inspect the work.

Work on the ‘65 Mustang meant customizing it with an Italian Momo steering wheel (usually seen in racing cars and in Ferrari’s), a custom engine, upgraded rear suspension, topgrade aluminum wheels, and “a seamless body.”

Roppo explains that this “one-of-a-kind” Mustang was sprayed with six coats of deep black paint and two coats of primer, wet-sanded to buff out any “ripples,” and finished with multiple coats of clear to achieve a lustrous “mirror finish.”

He oversees all car restoration, customization, and repair at his two Batavia shops, at 901 N. Raddant Road. In business since 2010, Roppo recently expanded operations to accommodate more automotive work, including work on imported and exotic cars.

ST. CHARLES – The Geneva boys basketball team isn’t short on much, but polished ball-handlers is one such element.

St. Charles East succeeded in its mission of cranking up enough defensive heat to throw the Vikings’ paint-oriented attack off-kilter. The Saints used a decisive 21-0 blitz during the third quarter to take command and held off the Vikings, 77-69, in Saturday’s marquee, early season Upstate Eight Conference River matchup.

Geneva (6-1, 2-1 UEC River) committed 25 turnovers compared to 11 for East (7-1, 4-0 UEC River).

“That was our game plan was ball pressure because we know they’re missing Pace Temple and they’re short on ball-handlers,” East senior guard Jake Asquini said. “We really wanted to get up on them, pressure them full court, to make them feel uncomfortable, and it worked. They had [25] turnovers.”

East point guard Cole Gentry and Geneva wing Nate Navigato – strong contenders for conference player of the year honors – canceled each other out with 29 points apiece. But while Gentry is as natural a point guard as they come, the 6-foot-7 Navigato had to shoulder much of his team’s ball-handling duties.

“Size is great and [the Vikings] have a lot of it and they have some very skilled size guys, but I still think guards control the game, and I think we have one of the best guards in the state in Cole Gentry,” East coach Pat Woods said.

“It’s tough, Nate had to bring the ball up most of the time and then try to create his shot.”

Gentry was credited with seven steals and followed his pattern of revving up his offense as the game unfolds. He scored 20 points in the second half and continued another of his trends – lights-out, fourth-quarter free-throw shooting (8 of 8).

“We had a speed advantage for sure,” Gentry said. “Obviously they’re bigger, they

Tradition claims that it was the bubonic plague in the 14th century that inspired the creation of beer steins.

Many people had noticed that there were more deaths in filthy places in town than in clean sections, and that there were clouds of insects along with the illness in Central Europe. By the early 1500s, laws had been passed that all food and beverages served in public must be covered to keep insects away. The common drinking glass was a mug, so a hinged lid with a thumb-lift was added - and the stein was created. Since beer was already a common beverage and its taste was improved when lids helped prevent spoilage, beer consumption increased and so did the manufacture of steins.

They were made of pewter, wood, stoneware and, for the very wealthy, ivory. Painted or carved decorations were added. A 1-liter stein made of carved ivory with scenes of cherubs drinking wine sold at a Fox stein auction in September 2014 for $5,760. *** Q: I bought a Chinese lacquered cabinet from a friend who inherited it from her parents. Her father, a merchant seaman, bought the cabinet in Hong Kong years ago. It’s 35 inches tall and 41 inches wide. The top opens up like a chest, and both the inside of the top and the outside of the cabinet are painted and inset with jade. Is the chest valuable?

A: Your chest probably would sell for a good price. Chinese antiques are “hot” these days - sought by collectors here and in China. Lacquered cabinets are especially desirable and can sell for prices into the thousands, as long as they’re high-quality and in great

condition. *** Q: I would like to know the value of a silver medicine spoon that belonged to my grandmother when she was a nurse at the turn of the 20th century. The handle curves back and turns under. There is a red cross on the back of the handle stamped, “Red Cross Medicine Spoon JB & SM Knowles, Prov., RI, USA.” The goldwashed bowl ends in a pouring spout and is marked on the back “Pat. 1901, Sterling 925/1000.” What’s it worth?

A: Your medicine spoon, patented in 1901, was sold by druggists. The bent handle allows the spoon to rest level on a table so a teaspoon of medicine can be poured into it. J.B. & S.M. Knowles of Providence, R.I., was in business from 1875 until 1905. Your spoon is worth about $150. *** Q: I have some Hess toy trucks from the 1960s and ‘70s. I think Hess Corp. releases a new toy nearly every holiday season. Are mine worth much?

A: The first Hess toy truck, sold in 1964, was a tanker-trailer that would sell today for about $120. Others from the 1960s and early ‘70s are even pricier. The 1970-’71 fire engine can sell for close to $500 if you have the original box, and the 1966 tanker ship with its box lists for well over $1,000. *** Q: I have a Jim Beam decanter that’s shaped like a baseball. It’s 10 inches high, has a batter at the top and reads, “Professional Baseball’s 100th Anniversary, 1869-1969.” It has never been opened. What is it worth?

A: Jim Beam whiskey dates back to the late 1700s. The company started selling Kentucky Straight Bourbon in special containers in 1953. The bottles were made by Regal China Co. of Chicago, which made several series of

Multiple non-drug treatments relieve hand joint pain Dear Doctor K: I have osteoarthritis in my hand. Could you recommend some drug-free treatments to relieve the pain?

Dear Reader: Osteoarthritis causes stiffness and pain in the joints. It develops when cartilage – the connective tissue that covers the ends of bones – deteriorates.

In a joint, the ends of two or more bones come together. The softer and more flexible cartilage that covers the ends of the bones acts as a cushion. If the cartilage were not there, the hard bones would grind against each other.

Over time, the space between bones narrows and the surfaces of the bones change shape. This can eventually damage the joint. In the hand, the most common places for osteoarthritis are the joint at the base of the thumb and the last joints before the tip of the fingers.

Here are some non-drug treatments you can try instead of, or in addition to, more traditional treatments: • Heat. Moist heat can help raise your pain threshold and decrease muscle spasms. Simply apply a warm, moist towel to your sore joint. You can also buy gel packs that can be warmed up in the microwave.

• Topical treatments. Many topical creams and gels, such as

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff Bengay and Aspercreme, can be rubbed directly onto affected joints to temporarily reduce inflammation and pain. These products often contain salicylate, a relative of aspirin, plus menthol or eucalyptus. Creams and lotions containing capsaicin (an extract of pepper) can also help relieve pain. The capsaicin produces a slightly unpleasant sensation that “distracts” the brain from paying attention to the pain signals from your arthritic joint. You need to use these products several times a day, because their effects are temporary.

• Splints. Hand splints can provide pain relief, improve function and realign the joint of your hand if needed.

• Exercises and joint protection.

An occupational therapist (OT) can recommend devices that can help if your hand has lost some strength or function. Examples include long-handed grippers, electric can openers or doorknob turners. An OT can also suggest exercises to improve your function. (I’ve put an illustration on my

website, AskDoctorK.com, of an exercise that may help to improve range-of-motion in your hands.)

When possible, try to move your hand when you’re feeling less pain or are pain-free, and rest it when pain intensifies.

• Paraffin wax bath and heat treatments. Sometimes therapists recommend a warm paraffin wax bath to temporarily relieve symptoms of hand osteoarthritis. You dip your hands into wax melted in an electric appliance that maintains a safe temperature. After the wax hardens, the therapist wraps the treated area in a plastic sheet and blanket to retain the heat.

Treatments take about 20 minutes, after which the wax is peeled off.

Paraffin bath kits are also available for home use.

If these non-drug treatments don’t give you sufficient relief, consider over-the-counter pain medicines. Particularly if hand pain is reducing the amount of time you can spend at something you love – like gardening or playing the piano – take action. Above all, don’t just do nothing!

Learn to turn other cheek Dr. Wallace: I’m a regular reader of your column and I usually (not always) agree with your advice. I believe in nonviolence and I always disagree when you encourage teens to fight back when confronted by a bully.

Never, ever, do I think that physical violence is a way to solve a problem, be it on the school playground or on the battlefields. If we would all learn to turn the other cheek, it would be a better world! – Sarah, San Jose, California Dear Sarah: After asking for advice on dating or parent issues, another major concern for teens is bullying.

I receive at least 10 letters or emails per week on this despicable subject. The plot is always the same – the bully seeks out a “victim” who can be easily harassed. This gives the bully a sense of power and status since most bullies are cowards who prey on those smaller or weaker than they are. Bullies rarely go after someone stronger than they are because they know they would wind up the loser.

In most cases, the bullying can be stopped if the school administration is aware that bullying can be a major school concern. When discovered, the bully is effectively disciplined and the parents are notified. They are informed that if a bullying incident occurs again, their bully may be sent home for the rest of the school year.

And it’s possible that the parents would need to home school the former student.

Many victims are afraid to inform school personnel or even parents because they

Students being bullied hate going to school so much that some even contemplate ending their lives. Again, let me say that schools with administrators who use effective discipline to eliminate bullying will stop the problem before it escalates into something more severe.

I also firmly believe in nonviolence. When bullying is a problem, everything should be done to peacefully and effectively eliminate it.

But when the administration doesn’t protect all of the students all of the time, I encourage the student who is being harassed to stand up to the bully and defend himself or herself.

I have received a goodly amount of letters such as yours advocating nonviolence. They advocate turning the other cheek and predict that, in time, the bully will get tired and stop the nefarious behavior.

With my educational experience, I can say that this solution is seldom successful.

But the majority of readers who responded to my defend-yourself philosophy agreed with me. Many of those who responded said that they also were victims of a bully and they wished that they would have had the courage to defend themselves.

A good bridge player can advance his score if he wins 10 tricks when playing in a four-level contract – as South is in today’s deal.

How should South plan the play in four hearts after West leads a trump?

Declarer must assume trumps are 3-2 – and a low-trump lead almost always means that they will be. With losers in spades, hearts and diamonds, it looks like South needs the club finesse to work – but, as we shall see, that is a mirage.

The simple – and here unsuccessful – approach is to win the first trick, cross to dummy’s diamond king and run the club queen. However, West wins with his king and returns his remaining trump. Declarer can take the trick, cash his diamond ace and two club winners (discarding a diamond from dummy), and ruff a diamond in the dummy. East, though, calmly discards a spade. When South continues with the ace and another spade, East takes the trick, cashes his high trump and leads a blacksuit winner. Declarer ruffs, but West wins the last trick with his high diamond for down one.

Instead, South should go for these 10 tricks: one spade, three hearts (the ace, king and a long trump), two diamonds, two clubs and two ruffs. At trick two, declarer should play a spade to, say, dummy’s jack. East wins and leads another trump, but South takes the trick, plays a spade to dummy’s ace, ruffs a spade, returns to dummy with a diamond, ruffs the last spade and concedes a club. He must fashion those 10 tricks.
