Animals in spotlight at children’s workshop

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com SOUTH ELGIN – Luke Risch is the first one to admit that he’s more of a dog person than a cat person.

But the 11-year-old St. Charles youth on Sunday found himself snuggling next to the cats at Anderson Animal Shelter.

“The cats here are nice,” Luke said.

Luke and others participated in the shelter’s Santa Paws workshop,

a fundraiser for the nonprofit shelter. This is the second year of the workshop.

“It’s educational for the kids,” said Christin Meyer, director of humane education at Anderson Animal Shelter. “They get to work with the animals.”

The children also participated in a number of other activities, such as making treats for the dogs at the shelter. Connor Lipe, 9, of St. Charles decided to use bacon in the treat he made.

“I think that one of the dogs will like it,” he said.

Meyer’s own dog, Ponyo, a French Bulldog, also got plenty of attention.

She adopted her from Anderson Animal Shelter two years ago. Ponyo was appropriately dressed in a Santa Claus outfit.

“She’s my little mascot,” Meyer said.

Lauren Guajardo, 7, of South Elgin, couldn’t help petting her.

“She’s really cute,” she said.

St. Charles police set for traffic campaign KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – On Friday, St. Charles police officers will begin a traffic enforcement campaign that focuses on impaired drivers and seat belt violators, according to a St. Charles Police Department news release.

The campaign, which is conducted in conjunction with the Illinois Department of Transportation’s

“Click It or Ticket” and “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” programs, will last through Jan. 5.

Goals include reducing the number of severe injury and fatal traffic crashes; increasing the use of seat belts, child safety seats and booster seats; and lowering the incidents of impaired driving involving injuries and fatalities.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Adminis-

tration, seat belt use is the single most effective way to protect people and reduce fatalities in motor vehicle crashes.

Research has shown that when lap and shoulder belts are used properly, the risk of fatal injury to front seat passenger car occupants is reduced by 45 percent, and the risk of moderate to serious injury is reduced by 50 percent.

ST. CHARLES – As he shopped Saturday alongside several St. Charles police officers, Logan Gagnepain, 12, said he planned to at least browse the video game aisle at Super Target in St. Charles during the department’s first Shop with a Cop event.

“This is my first Shop with a Cop, and I’ve gotta say this is very generous of them,” he said.

Members of the Metropolitan Alliance of Police Chapter 27 – the St. Charles Police Department’s union – partnered with Super Target to shop for toys with six children whose families are being assisted by Lazarus House in St. Charles.

Seventeen police officers showed up Saturday to go shopping, and only three children were able to make it. Detective Jerry Schomer, union president, said an illness and possibly the weather kept a few families at home, but officers still planned to give them gift certificates and a stocking filled with gifts.

Schomer said the union donated $500 toward the shopping spree while Target donated $200 and offered to give a 20 percent discount on all items bought Saturday. Officer Bridget McCowan, who helped organize the department’s first Shop with a Cop, said she hoped to make it an annual event that grows each year.

She said Super Target was especially generous in helping coordinate the event because it was put together somewhat at the last minute. Store manager Evan Lenchner said in addition to the discount and $200, the store also donated wrapping paper and food from the store’s cafe. Target volunteers also were on hand to assist with shopping.

“We want this to happen every year,” he said. “Next year, we hope to give $500 to $1,000.”

St. Charles Police Chief Jim Lamkin said he had done a Shop with a Cop event while working in Elgin and wanted to bring it St. Charles.

do. I’m really proud of them,” he said. “I did this when I was younger and never forgot it.”

The three children who were able to make it to Super Target on Saturday picked up a variety of gifts – including some to give to their family members. Hannah Gagnepain, 11, picked up a present for her mom, along with a new basketball, a Nintendo DS game and a popcorn maker.

McCowan said she contacted Super Target about a month ago and wasn’t sure what to expect for the first event.

“For their employees to come out and pull this off was more than I expected. [The officers’] support of this is priceless,” she said. “Next year, we’re going to be doing fundraising for this and working to find avenues to fundraise so we can help more children next year.”

Batavia upset bid unravels in 4th quarter

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – As fleeting as the Batavia boys basketball team’s rut was Saturday night against Larkin, it was enough to deprive the Bulldogs of a big-time upset.

Batavia saw its double-digit fourth quarter lead punctured in a hurry by Upstate Eight Conference River power Larkin, which stormed past Batavia late for a 69-65 win.

The Bulldogs lost despite outscoring the Royals, 39-0, from 3-point land.

“It’s frustrating to know we were there,” Batavia senior guard Micah Coffey said.

“We had the opportunity to put that game away. It just kind of shows the fight that we can have. We kind of see glimpses of where we can be, we’ve just got to be there all the time now.”

Coffey’s 3-pointer with 5:15 to go in the game put Batavia ahead, 59-49.

But the Royals (7-1, 3-0 UEC River) negated that 10-point deficit in less than two minutes, catching the Bulldogs at 60-all on senior guard Kendale McCullum’s coast-to-coast layup that turned into a threepoint play with 3:18 to go.

McCullum, perhaps the top defender in the conference, cranked up his team’s energy throughout the fourth quarter, when he scored 13 of his 19 points.

“They did capitalize on some of our turnovers, and when they capitalized, they scored in like three seconds some possessions,” said Batavia coach Jim Nazos, whose team dropped its fourth straight game. “Maybe in a run we’ve got to dig in, really get in a gap better, force another turn and draw some possessions out for them offensively. But they’re good.

“We did have a couple rough turnovers, a rough patch there, but our rough patches are going down from halves to quarters to minutes, I guess. We’ve got to look at it in a constructive way and

Despite momentum swinging dramatically to Larkin midway through the fourth quarter, Batavia (2-5, 0-2 UEC River) had several chances to tie or take the lead after Bulldogs junior Chasen Peez drained the team’s 13th and final 3-ball of the night to tie the game at 65 with 1:34 to

play.

McCullum’s slashing basket put the Royals up, 67-65, with 1:02 left. Peez then was fouled and missed both free throws with 48 seconds to go, but Bulldogs junior Danny Pieczynski gathered an offensive rebound.

Coffey misfired on a 3-pointer but Pieczynski

snared another clutch offensive rebound, and Batavia called timeout with 30 seconds left. A well executed backdoor cut positioned Coffey to tie the game, but he was unable to finish in traffic.

This time, Larkin gathered the rebound, but the Royals’ Brayden Royse missed two

free throws with 20 seconds to play, giving the Bulldogs new life yet again.

Peez tried to tie it but missed a shot in the lane, and Larkin’s Jones then converted a pair of free throws with 5.2 seconds left for the final margin.

Although the once-hot Bulldogs’ shooting touch eluded them late, Nazos was proud of his team’s late-game grit, particularly Pieczynski’s efforts on the glass.

“He’s somebody who practices hard and does a lot of good things,” Nazos said.

“There’s not a possession that he isn’t fighting and doing things.”

Batavia led, 35-30, at halftime, during which Royals coach Deryn Carter only spent a few minutes with his team in the locker room before returning to the bench by himself.

“To be honest, there wasn’t much I had to say that was going to be positive so I tried to keep it as brief as possible,” Carter said. “And I needed to collect my thoughts, and I needed to do a better job. I didn’t do a good job in that second quarter so I knew myself well enough to get out, kind of relax and get back to coaching.”

The Bulldogs’ lead swelled to 13 points twice in the late third quarter before Larkin’s ramped-up sense of urgency took a toll on Bulldogs ball-handlers in the fourth quarter.

“We can’t make a habit out of this,” Carter said.

Jones led all scorers with 24 points, while Peez led Batavia with 21 points. Coffey’s football rust appears to be eroding; he had five of the Bulldogs’ 3-pointers and scored 16 points. Pieczynski and reserve forward Ryan Olson scored eight points each for the Bulldogs.

It was certainly a more encouraging performance for Batavia than the Bulldogs have exhibited the past couple weeks, but the result made that difficult for the Bulldogs to appreciate.

“Tomorrow we can take a look at where we were good,” Coffey said. “But tonight, it hurts.”

Beebe hands off Aurora Christian program to younger brother Dave

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com Ten years ago, Don Beebe felt a calling to take over the Aurora Christian football program.

Coaching high school was not just a lark for the former NFL receiver and six-time Super Bowl participant. Beebe took the program’s mentoring potential to heart, helping orchestrate a stadium and eventually a state championship-caliber program at the small, faith-based school.

But Beebe is a man of great ambition, and the time finally arrived when running the Eagles’ football program no longer fit on his front-burner. On Friday night, Beebe announced at the Eagles’ postseason banquet that he has stepped down as head coach and will be replaced by his younger brother, Dave Beebe.

Dave Beebe has been defensive coordinator for the Eagles since Don Beebe took charge in 2004.

“I know that it’s right,” Don Beebe said. “It doesn’t mean it’s not going to hurt, but I know it’s right. What gives me great comfort is that Dave is going to take the program over, and it’s going to be fan-

tastic.”

At least for the short term, Dave Beebe is hopeful that Don will stay on as the Eagles’ offensive coordinator in a transition something reminiscent of the one made at Batavia when Mike Gaspari and Dennis Piron essentially swapped responsibilities.

Don Beebe cited two main factors in relinquishing the head coaching post less than a month after the Eagles were eliminated in the IHSA Class 3A state semifinals. An upcoming movie project based on the central role Christianity has played in his life journey figures to lead to other opportunities to speak of his religious convictions, and he also intends to see all of his son’s future college football games; Chad Beebe is wrapping up his freshman season at Northern Illinois.

The movie is expected to explore similar themes to the ones tapped by author Denise Crosby in “Six Rings from Nowhere,” a book released in 2012 about Beebe’s underdog story.

For the movie, Beebe is partnering with Desert Wind Faith Films, and executive producer Steven Camp said the movie will feature original storytelling beyond what went into the book.

“It’ll be a lot of what Denise wrote, no question about it, but the nice thing about this group is they’re giving me final say because I do not want a Hollywood story here,” Don Beebe said. “I want a a story based on truth and not something that’s not true and fantasized.

My story is crazy enough as it is that you really don’t have to make up a whole lot.”

No, Don Beebe will not play himself in the movie, he brushed off with a laugh.

“I don’t know the first thing about this stuff,” Don Beebe said. “I’m as wet behind the ears as you can get but I’m just going to enjoy that deal and know full well I’m very blessed and honored to potentially have this happen, but knowing full well why. This isn’t about Don Beebe. It’s about my faith and potential platform I’ll have to share that faith.”

Don Beebe consistently maintained that molding young men into devout Christians, using football as a tool, dwarfed wins and losses at Aurora Christian. Coaching winning football, though, also came naturally to the Kaneland graduate, whose Aurora Christian teams went 97-26 in 10 years, featuring consecutive Class 3A state championships in 2011 and 2012.

I have only my brother, his wife and their kids. I’m on Social Security disability and I barely make it each month.

They are financially much better off than I am.

I lost my wife a year ago.

Because this is your first Christmas without your wife, it’s no wonder you feel alone.

At this time of year, many people do. A way to lessen the sense of isolation would be to do something for someone else.

If you’re able, volunteer at a food bank, a homeless shelter, a senior center.

It will give you less time to brood, and you will feel welcome and needed.

Phyllis Diller said, “We spend the first 12 months of our children’s lives teaching them to walk and talk and the next 12 telling them to sit down and shut up.” At the bridge table, some players are scared of 12 -- the number of tricks needed for a small slam. Others zoom that high whenever there is the faintest aroma of slam in the air. But the ideal is between those two extremes. This week, let’s study some of the factors for accurate slam bidding.

First, when two balanced hands face each other, combined point-count is a surprisingly reliable indicator. Some years ago, I ran a computer analysis.

I gave the partnership’s hands no five-card suit and no 4-4 fit. I found that when the total pointcount was 33, six no-trump was a favorite; but when it was only 32, that slam was an underdog.

Here is an easy example for the bidding, but not so simple in the play. How can South make six no-trump after West leads the club 10? South’s two-no-trump rebid shows a balanced hand with 18, 19 or a poor 20 points. It is in principle forcing to game and does not deny four spades.

South cannot risk a nonforcing one-spade rebid with that strong a hand. South has 11 top tricks: three spades, four hearts, two diamonds and two clubs. The clubs might split 3-3, but that is unlikely both mathematically and given the opening lead.

However, the contract is assured if declarer takes trick one, unblocks dummy’s diamond ace-king, returns to his hand with, say, a spade, and leads the diamond jack to drive out the queen. The diamond 10 is trick 12.

District Contract Manager (DCM) The DCM will manage the distribution within a geographic area for ACI Midwest, LLC responsible for negotiating contracts with Independent Contractors, managing delivery fees, and achieving service targets. This is a salaried position. Market salary provided commensurate with experience. Previous supervisory experience required. Previous newspaper distribution experience is a plus.

Must have reliable transportation, proof of insurance and valid driver's license. Typical work schedule begins at 1 am.
