Annual event benefits The Salvation Army centers

“We don’t have to go too far in the world to find the needy – they are here,” said Samantha Olivas, an Aurora resident.

Olivas and many other donors Saturday dropped money into about 40 red kettles across the Tri-Cities during the fifth annual Colonial Café Match Day for The Salvation Army.

The donations made to all of the red kettles in St. Charles, Geneva, Batavia, Aurora, Naperville, Elgin, Algonquin and Crystal Lake on Saturday will be matched up to $30,000, said Lt. Betsy Clark, officer for the Tri-City Corps.

Donations collected in the Tri-Cities on Saturday totaled $54,297, not including the Colonial match, she said.

When the donations from all of the participating area corps were added up with the $30,000 Colonial match, the total came to $176,741.91.

“We’re just so happy,” Clark said. “We’re just really grateful that when we put the opportunity out there … to meet the needs of the community, people respond, and that’s very encouraging to us.”

Colonial Café started matching donations up to $10,000 five years ago and gradually increased it, said John Arthur Anderson, whose family owns the Colonial restaurants. Anderson also serves on The Salvation Army board in St. Charles.

Colonial Café has seven restaurant locations, including two in St. Charles.

Geneva resident Owen Eldridge said Colonial was generous for offering to make a donation match. He put money Saturday inside a red kettle outside the Starbucks location in downtown Geneva.

Henri said his daughters have joined him for volunteer bell-ringing shifts for at least the past 12 years.

“It’s something that I wanted them to get involved in,” Henri said. “We live in a nice community, and it’s a way to give back.”

urday brought her sons Adam, 10, and Logan, 6, to one of her bell-ringing shifts for the first time.

When they asked what The Salvation Army was, she had them read about the organization on her phone on the way to her club-organized shift outside the Batavia Jewel-Osco.

The Deitchmans were joined by first-time ringers Margaret Perreault and her daughter, Maggie, 9.

Other first-time ringers included St. Charles East High School juniors Brent Hull, 17, and Jordan Hieber, 16, outside of the Blue Goose Market in St. Charles. They greeted every shopper who passed them, including donor Angie Hirter and her Geneva family.

“It’s good to have resources for people who need it,” Hirter said of The Salvation Army.

I recently read an article where St. Charles was featured for being a wonderful place to live, work and play. Laura Macklin-Purdy, business development representative at the St. Charles Chamber of Commerce, is a longtime resident of St. Charles and was quoted saying, “It’s absolutely stunning and beautiful; I feel like I’m on vacation every day.”

Then, just the other day, St. Charles was listed No. 1 as the top Christmas town in Illinois and a magical place to visit during the holidays.

As you are scrambling to finish holiday shopping, remember to shop local – visit our lovely downtown area and enjoy what St. Charles has to offer. New programs, initiatives to begin under Boles’ leadership as chief judge

bschory@shawmedia.com As new Kane County Chief Judge Susan Clancy Boles begins her two-year term this month, she leaves her felony courtroom to begin a role as leader of the county’s third branch of government – the judiciary.

In her role as the chief judge, she will see that the judiciary is run in compliance with Supreme Court rules and that the courthouses are safe for the employees and the public – particularly the civil court on Third Street in Geneva.

“Safety, not only for the public, but for employees who work over there,” Boles said. “That is something I will focus on, as well.”

Also as chief judge, Boles will speak to the Kane County Board about the judiciary’s issues, as well. Boles said she will be overseeing the fruition of programs and initiatives begun under previous chief judges, such as the new court case management system, which was begun under former Chief Judge Keith Brown.

“A lot of duties of the chief judge are the same from one judge to another,” said Boles, 50. “There are certain roles that don’t change by statute. Court services never changes by statute. And there are budgetary constraints.”

Brown still is involved in the court case management system because he is chairman of the Kane County Commission for Technology and Strategic Planning Commission to implement it.

“It is not completed yet,” Boles said. “We are in the conversion process, and everyone is diligently working toward it.”

The program relies on risk analysis to reduce recidivism, so those being held in jail, pending a trial or court date, are really the individuals at the highest risk of not showing up in court or are a danger to others, she said.

Court services hired additional employees to go into the jails to conduct a risk analysis for those appearing on bond call, Boles said. They will conduct follow-up interviews to provide information to the judge at bond court to assist in making a determination about the defendant, Boles said.

The judge at bond call is the first judge an arrested person normally sees after arrest, Boles said, so having this information helps that judge “make a complete and knowledgeable

determination regarding bond for an individual.”

“We are working together diligently to get all the ducks in a row on that, Judge Brawka and I are,” Boles said.

Another duty of the chief judge is assigning judges to courtrooms. Boles said judges typically are reassigned after 2 ½ to three years.

“Some courtrooms really benefit from consistent assignments, three- to five-year assignments,” Boles said. “It helps to have judges rotate – not only for the judge but for litigants – to have fresh eyes on it.

That way, the judiciary are able to sit in any courtroom and be effective in any courtroom.”

Boles said new judge assignments will begin Jan. 11.

Other courtrooms, such as drug court or treatment alternative court, do better with consistency, so those judges are assigned for at least two years,

Boles said.

“I do recognize a need for mental health treatment,” Boles said. “Before I was in delinquency (court), I was in abuse and neglect (court), and I saw how mental (illness) and substance abuse. ... I saw how it can blow up a family.”

Each division of the courts – such as felony or civil – has a presiding judge who serves as a conduit to the chief judge and helps run things within their particular divisions, she said.

Brown, who retired as a judge last year, said serving as chief judge from 2008 to 2012 “was the highlight of my judicial career.”

“It gave me an opportunity to provide leadership and direction to the entire court system,” Brown said. “It also provided me an opportunity to have contact with the overall community in order to create a dialogue in order to have judiciary serve

its constituents.”

Brown praised Boles as the choice for the new chief judge.

“I’ve known Susan for a number of years,” he said. “I’ve watched her blossom, not only as a judge but as a leader in our legal community. I believe she is a fine selection and will service the public well. She is not only a nice person but a very smart, intelligent jurist.”

Boles was appointed as an associate judge in April 2007, and the next year, she was appointed as a circuit judge to fill out Judge R. Peter Grometer’s term after he retired. She ran for election in 2010 and was elected. She will be on the ballot for retention on the November 2016 ballot.

Although judges can be rotated in and out of various courtrooms, Boles was elected chief judge by other circuit court judges. She is the second female chief judge, following Brawka.

“It is an honor and one I was very humbled by and thrilled by at the same time,” Boles said. “I look forward to working collectively with the other branches of government and to be effective in my role.”

Although a chief judge traditionally does not have a court call, Boles said she might want to pick that up again during her term.

“Not in full, but in some capacity at some point,” Boles said. “I’ve had a lot of people tell me that is a crazy thought, that I will not have a lot of time in the day to do that and learn all aspects of this position.”

Boles acknowledged that being chief judge means she will “have a lot of things on my plate.”

“Really ... what is best for the public is what my job is,” she said. “That is who we serve – looking at our population and determining what is best and safe for the public.”

‘Ultimate Playhouse’ belongs to St. Charles family KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – The winners of “The Ultimate Playhouse” raffle, benefiting Changing Children’s Worlds Foundation, were Jamie and Eden Anderson of St. Charles.

The playhouse, which was designed and built by John Hall Custom Homes, recently was delivered by crane for the Andersons’ daughter, Eva, 6.

The playhouse, which is 12 feet, 6 inches tall, includes features such as Wi-Fi, insulation, a sleeping loft, LED light-

ing and USB ports.

The playhouse was raffled off at the charity’s Sept. 19 fundraiser at Pottawatomie Park in St. Charles. Raffle proceeds fund the Geneva charity’s empathy-based parenting programs throughout the area.

Executive Director Kimberly Svevo-Cianci stated in a news release that the charity’s priority is supporting parent and child programs where funding is not available.

The charity will begin a new ultimate playhouse raffle next year.

N. Aurora man creates holiday signs for second Hesed House fundraiser NORTH AURORA – A North Aurora man has expanded his fundraiser for Hesed House and a veteran in its second year.

In 2014, Doug Jobe auctioned off a piece of wood he found that had a likeness of the Virgin Mary with baby Jesus. The winning bidder told him to keep the object and paid him double the bid for a total of about $1,000.

This year, Jobe made 112 holiday yard signs and offered them to people for a minimum $25 donation. Thanks to generous donors and those who simply gave without asking for a sign, Jobe estimates the fundraiser will reach a total of $6,500 by Wednesday.

“I’m happy today – everything’s been sold,” Jobe said Sunday.

Jobe created 60 snowmen and 52 Christmas tree signs with discarded fencing he requested from Paramount Fence Company in Batavia.

On Nov. 20, Jobe began to use his woodshop in his garage as the base of operations for the fundraiser. He sprayand hand-painted the twofoot snowmen and four-foot Christmas trees, personalizing them with family names upon request.

Jobe was a custom stair builder for 25 years before he became a caregiver to his mother, Rosemary Jobe, after she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.

Jobe was born and raised in Batavia before his family moved to North Aurora. Old friends and acquaintances were able to reconnect with Jobe through the fundraiser when they ordered signs and came to pick them up at his North Aurora home.

Jobe this week plans to use about half of the money raised to buy items for Hesed House, a homeless shelter and resource center in Aurora.

The other half of the money will be given to a to-be-determined veteran, possibly through a local Veterans Affairs office, Jobe said.

Jobe is done making signs for the year, but he will continue to accept donations for the fundraiser through PayPal through Sunday.

Terry worked for many years at the family business, Fox Valley Restaurant in Geneva, IL, before he began a career with Eagle Concrete, Batavia IL. He most recently relocated to Largo, FL where he and his wife purchased a printing business, Minuteman Press of Largo. Terry’s greatest joys were his grandson Cole, The Chicago Bears and cooking.

He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Paula (Bedal); his son, Eric (Desiree) Cryer of Elgin; his mother, Dolores of North Aurora; grandsons, Cole of Burlington and Colton of Elgin; his brother, Jim (Margo) Lefaver of North Aurora, IL; Mary Maxon of Aurora, IL; Peggy (Mark) Fodge of DeKalb, IL; Pam Crosby of Sebring, FL; Linda (Jeff) Chaney of St. Charles, IL; BJ Cryer (Angie Hysjulien) of Sandwich, IL and many other dear relatives and friends.

Ken made a career in banking, was past President and Board of Director of Geneva Savings and Loan. Ken helped organize the St. Charles Jaycees, was past President of the Geneva Lions Club, past Commander of the Wasco American Legion, member of the St. Charles Moose, and St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in St. Charles. Ken also was an auctioneer, working with his father and later with his

son, Gregory. A long time resident of St. Charles, he and his wife, Blanche, retired to Lake of the Ozarks, MO in 1994.

Ken was predeceased by his wife of 40 years, Blanche Scott Carlson; his parents, Arthur and Dora (Nagel) Johnson; his brother and sister-in-law, Wesley and Elaine Johnson; and his former wife, Joyce Krebs.

He is survived by his children, Gregory (Melynda) Johnson of Lexington, KY, Lynette Cesar of Elburn, and David (Kristine) Johnson of Campton Township; 5 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. ST. CHARLES – More than 100 people packed the branch court Monday in St. Charles where the Kane County Zoning Board of Appeals began its hearing a proposal for an alcohol and drug addiction treatment center near Campton Hills.

Maxxam Partners LLC is seeking a special use permit to convert the former Glenwood School for Boys, at 41W400 Silver Glen Road, into a 120-bed private pay, luxury treatment center.

Attorney Keith Brown, representing Maxxam, said the facility will be state-ofthe art, and on the tax rolls, generating more than $300,000 in property taxes a year, and having the potential to become one of the best facilities in the country.

For all the positives, Brown said, neighbors “have been upset in the past.”

“I am a retired judge. After talking to [neighbors] and lis-

tening to them,” Brown said.

“The unspoken problem we have in Kane County … we have a drug problem.”

Brown said the facility would not have an adverse affect on property values.

“I am proud to say it: This project will be one of the top places in the country, one that will make our community proud,” Brown said.

But ZBA member Gerry Regan, a Plato Township trustee, said what he hears from people is they are afraid.

“People in the neighborhood are definitely afraid,” Regan said. “Addicts are addicts, whether you are on heroin or whatever. If somebody doesn’t want to be there and leave – that is what has the people frightened. What is the answer to that?”

Brown said an untreated addict in a neighborhood is more dangerous that those who want to be treated.

The hearing continued to 10 p.m. with the possibility of reconvening at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

The world’s collective pledge

THE WASHINGTON POST Representatives of nearly 200 countries Saturday reached a climate change agreement that was two weeks, and decades, in the making. The Paris agreement is a landmark in the world’s response to manmade climate change, with every nation that matters acknowledging the problem and pledging to respond. But the hard work lies ahead.

Opponents, including many in Congress, no longer can claim that action is pointless because big emitters, such as China, never will cooperate.

What negotiators in Paris achieved might prove analogous to the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, which

began modestly and – over decades – steadily ratcheted up ambition among nations to liberalize international trade.

At its core lie pledges from 187 countries to cut their emissions or projected emissions of greenhouse gases, the drivers of global warming. Through the most significant piece of the deal, these pledges were the least contentious point of negotiation. The commitments were decided in world capitals sometimes months in advance.

This is what gives them force: They reflect established emissions-cutting policies that countries – such as the United States, China and European Union nations – already are implementing.

Taken together, the pledges will get the world a bit short of

halfway to the medium-term emissions reductions necessary to limit global temperature increase to 2 degrees Celsius. That’s serious progress. But it still is far from where the world needs to get, as negotiators acknowledged.

After days of wrangling, they agreed that the world should limit warming to “well below 2 degrees.” This is a fine ambition, but it might turn out to be little more than wishful thinking.

To contain warming even to 2 degrees, countries must continually increase their emissions-cutting commitments. As much as anything else, the Paris agreement is about setting ground rules for future pledges. Nations will be expected to report on their

emissions levels regularly.

By 2023, and every five years thereafter, negotiators will gather to “take stock” of how countries are doing – and how much more they need to contribute.

The Paris agreement also enshrines the principle that countries should be held to their promises. The principle remains controversial, particularly whether nations will submit to in-country reviews. Negotiators agreed that countries will undergo “technical expert review,” leaving some limited but stillto-be-worked-out “flexibility” for developing countries, if they can show they need it.

There’s little good reason for “flexibility” on transparency, and it’s important that major

emitters, such as China, not be able to wriggle out of accountability. But technology might simplify this issue: Measuring various countries’ emissions will probably soon be done by satellite.

Important elements of the rules are still to be worked out. But the basic structure of the world’s response to global warming is taking shape. Now, the increasingly isolated critics of climate action will have to explain not only why they reject science but also why they would harm U.S. standing in the world by seeking to slow the progress so many countries are making. To save the earth from terrible injury, the United States should instead be leading, as it so often has done in the past.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR His silence is deafening

To the Editor: It has been more than two months since the last mass killing in Oregon and more than two weeks since the most recent in Colorado. And yet our congressman, Randy Hultgren, once again has demonstrated that gun violence in America has not yet risen to a level where he’s willing to work with others in Congress to discuss or help pass some bi-partisan, common-sense steps that might start to curtail some of the violence.

I might try to rationalize his inaction by saying that he doesn’t want to tarnish his high NRA ratings. Or that this gun violence is such a complicated, complex issue, and really what can one person do? Or that this is not a gun issue, it’s a mental health issue. Or that there is just no middle ground to be found in Washington these days.

No rational person believes that passing a bill will solve all gun violence, but we should expect our representatives to express more than just words of condolence for these victims – we should expect and demand that they show courage and independence to take on even the most difficult, politically uncomfortable issues.

So far, congressmen like Randy Hultgren are content to remain silent. Nothing said, nothing done. And the loss of innocent victims continues.

Changing lane assignments Kaneland girls bowlers make do without facility in district

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com Beth Trafton lives within walking distance of Mardi Gras Lanes in DeKalb, home of the Kaneland girls bowling team.

It’s an undoubted perk for the program’s longtime assistant coach, but Trafton would surrender it in an instant.

She’d rather see the Knights’ commutes on the team bus curtailed than her own.

“There’s an awesome corner at the corner of (Route) 47 and Keslinger (Road) in Elburn. There’s a big, empty corner,” Trafton said. “It only costs, like, I don’t know, somebody told me $4.5 million or something to build a bowling alley. I mean, it’s no big deal.”

Delivering that last bit with a grin and good humor, Trafton is nonetheless straightforward in her message: Kaneland could field far more than 12 athletes, the team’s size this season between varsity and JV, if a bowling center rested within the borders of Kaneland School District 302.

Until a large donation or the world’s biggest bake sale transforms reality, however, the nomadic Knights operate happily. Whether in transit or in shoes, they’re rolling.

Northern Illinois Big 12 counterpart DeKalb also practices and hosts competitions at Mardi Gras Lanes, and a Barbs’ banner rests next to the Knights’ on a side wall of the 36-lane facility.

Be it ever so 20 minutes from the Kaneland campus, there’s no place like home.

“I like that I’m always used to it, and it just helps me do better when we’re at home when we’re used to the lanes,” Knights junior Grace Lindgren said.

Lindgren grew up bowling, much like Jim McKnight, Kaneland’s coach since 1989, who drives the bus to the alley. He did the same when the Knights were based at AMF Valley Lanes in North Aurora, which closed in 2010.

Whatever his route, he is no stranger to related or even repeat trains of thought on the ride. Despite a cultural change that has marginalized bowling in some areas, the Freeport-bred McKnight relishes the opportunity to be around the sport and guide students eager to learn.

“Me, growing up ... in the (1960s) and ’70s, bowling was king. Everybody bowled,” McKnight said. “Kids, that was your Saturday recreation. Everybody bowled. Sometimes even on Sunday afternoons. But I think bowling had a bit of a downturn in the ’80s and especially the ’90s. It’s a very different game than it was.”

On a state level, the opportunity to participate in high school bowling has steadily grown. The IHSA first offered girls bowling as a state series sport in 1973. This season’s field will include 220 schools – 15 fewer than 2014-15 but 137 more than McKnight’s first season at Kaneland.

Boys bowling debuted as an IHSA state series sport in 2002-03, when 111 schools entered. The 2015-16 field will include 190 schools.

McKnight and Trafton aren’t dis-

puting the importance of these opportunities, they simply know what would increase them for Kaneland students, even the ones using house shoes and bowling balls.

“Just to have that Saturday morning youth league where they get used to it and stuff makes a huge difference,” Trafton said. “We don’t have that.”

McKnight also acknowledges the climate shift in youth and club sports, and figures the climb toward specialization also has claimed a few would-be participants.

CHICAGO HEIGHTS – The Batavia girls basketball team routed Thornwood, 74-19, Monday in Marian Invitational play, improving to 11-1 overall and 3-0 in the tournament.

The Bulldogs beat Bloom Township by 22 and Neuqua Valley by 27 to open tournament action Saturday.

Batavia will face either Rich East or the host Spartans for the tournament title at 2:15 p.m. Saturday.

Duhawks an experience that they won’t soon forget.

“It’s the best team and best atmosphere I’ve ever stepped on a soccer field with,” Higgins said. “Sure, the loss is painful and I’ll be the first one to say we were very emotional after, but it doesn’t take away from the bond and experience that none of us had ever gone Kevin Higgins through before.

These guys are my buds and out of around 400 teams, we were playing as one of the final two on the last day of the season. That’s pretty special.”

It all did not come easy from the beginning, however, for Higgins. He attended Waubonsee Community College, playing as a freshman before transferring to Loras – a school his two older brothers, Mike and Chris,

attended – for his remaining three years.

He did not record a minute of playing time during his sophomore campaign, remaining as a reserve for the duration of the season. Higgins admitted it wasn’t the easiest thing to do, coming from Geneva. He earned All-Upstate Eight Conference honors and made the all-regional and all-sectional teams throughout his career.

“As a competitor, you’re never satisfied. You always want to be out there helping your team,” Higgins said. “Everyone that comes to Loras was a great player on their high school team, so some guys handle that transition better than others. I had to pay my dues and learn new things, and looking back, I think it was really beneficial.”

Higgins still trained with the team on a daily basis, learning what he said was a much different system at Loras, play-

ing man-to-man marking on the back line.

This was a transition Higgins picked up fairly quickly, despite not spending a significant time as a defender until his senior year at Geneva.

“It’s kind of cool because a lot of the guys that were reserves with me and put in their time were ones really contributing on this team,” Higgins said.

“It’s awesome to think that a lot of that success came from that group that were brought in and learned this system that well.”

From that struggle and putting in his dues, Higgins then started 13 games and appeared in 19 as a junior, before appearing in all 24 games this year, starting 21.

Even though his soccer career at Loras is over, Higgins still plans to stay in sports, earning his degree this spring as a sports management major, saying he hopes to work somewhere in sports event planning.

Although Kaneland has produced several collegiate bowlers through the years, most recently 2015 graduate Dominique Lee of Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Missouri, those cases are the exception.

“They don’t tend to stick with it,” Trafton said. “It’s got to be a priority.”

Yorkville, a second-year program that defeated Kaneland last week at Mardi Gras Lanes, finds the same predicament.

Although Yorkville Bowl is not far from campus – and fittingly adjacent to a thoroughfare named Leisure Street – coach Julie Renda, a four-year bowler at Hoffman Estates, said the Foxes are “in the infant stages” of building a youth feeder program.

In the here and now, though, Yorkville enjoys a luxury some don’t.

A survey conducted by Elburn’s Chamber of Commerce during last year’s Christmas Stroll revealed citizen interest in a bowling alley is there.

Trafton already has a corner picked out, but she and McKnight would be agreeable to

other locales.

The Knights receive a piece of candy for each strike they roll, and on 4 or 4:30 p.m. match days, it’s sustenance before dinner.

Kaneland bowling parents, like the children they support, are well-traveled. Imagine one of them being in position to say the candy will spoil the meal instead.

Any emotion other than heartbreak was hard to imagine for Kevin Higgins or any member of the Loras College men’s soccer team.

Higgins, a Geneva graduate, and the Duhawks made a run to the NCAA Division III national championship game, but fell to Amherst (Massachusetts) College, 2-1, on Dec. 5. The loss not only ended Higgins’ Loras soccer career, but those of many seniors who he had formed bonds with.

Higgins, a defender, assisted on the Duhawks’ lone goal in the championship match, finishing his season with two goals and five assists.

Although devastation seemed to be the general theme throughout the team when the final whistle sounded, Higgins has had some time to reflect on the unforgettable experience

since the contest in Kansas City, Missouri.

“It was a pretty crazy experience,” Higgins said. “I’ve been playing soccer for a long time and this was the most emotionally, physically and mentally demanding season I’ve had in any sport. We knew coming in that we had the talent and just needed to put it together.

As heartbreaking as it was to lose at the end like that, with each day that goes by, you start to appreciate it and everything that came with an opportunity like that.”

Higgins said he never had played in an atmosphere like he did in the NCAA tournament, as the Duhawks (18-5-1) picked up victories over Carthage, DePauw, Wheaton and Calvin before falling to Amherst in the title game to end a nine-match winning streak.

Higgins also credited the Loras fan base for traveling to see the team play, giving the

Burlington Central turned more heads than usual when it thumped Crystal Lake Central, 111-38, to open its season and Thanksgiving tournament last month.

Although the point spreads have tightened since then, BC’s stranglehold on foes has been no less dominant during a 7-0 start. The Rockets entered Monday’s game against Rockford Christian looking for a 3-0 mark in Big Northern Conference East play, having won their first two league games by 32 and 48 points, respectively.

“We’ve got five kids that have played a lot,” Central coach Mark Smith said.

“We’re anxious to play the next couple weeks, then anxious to get to the Dundee-Crown tournament.

We’re playing pretty well right now, but we want the competition to pick up a little bit.”

Central returned much of its core from a fourth-place, Class 3A state tournament in 2013-14 but suffered an early postseason exit last season.

The personnel – and narrative – aren’t altogether different this time around, either, as the team still clicks behind usual suspects such as Kayla Ross, Shelby Holt and Sam Pryor.

“They’re really eager to make it happen this year,” Smith said.

Dundee-Crown tournament play begins Dec. 26 and runs through Dec. 30.

It doesn’t seem like something that should have been that hard to do, but we did seem to have a hard time fouling them, and that hurt us, too, in the end.”

Despite his lack of varsity experience, Talarczyk fits the exact mold of a Saints boys basketball player. He showed that Saturday night.

The 6-foot-6 forward used his size and ability to make plays both inside and outside the arc, scoring 22 points and adding nine rebounds to lead the Saints past North, 69-50, in the year’s first battle between the two schools in the Upstate Eight Conference River Division.

North girls, East boys win

GENEVA – Senior forward Jordan Vedder and junior guard Dominic Navigato carried the Geneva boys basketball team to a 63-40 exhibition game victory Saturday night against Churchie, an Australian travel team.

Vedder and Navigato each had 19 points as the Vikings dominated the third quarter, breaking the game open by outscoring the Aussie team, 29-10.

The Vikings led by as many as 15 points in the first half until a 13-3 Churchie run to close the first half had Geneva up, 26-21, at halftime.

“We came out the third quarter and performed,” Vikings coach Phil Ralston said. “We talked at halftime about protecting our home floor. We talked about our home winning streak.”

The win puts the Vikings’ home winning streak at 22 games.

Geneva has not lost on its home floor since falling to St. Charles North in Janu-

ary 2014.

Ralston said he was happy for the cultural experience his players got playing against their Australian peers and getting together to share pizzas with them after the game. Several Geneva families also provided lodging Saturday night.

From a coaching standpoint, however, it was a little tough on him.

“I pride myself on scouting the heck out of teams.

It’s kind of hard to get tape on them,” Ralston quipped.

Vedder and Navigato combined for six 3-pointers – five of them in Geneva’s dominant third quarter.

“Our bigs (Vedder and Navigato) did a great job shooting the ball,” Ralston said. “I was a little surprised they didn’t guard them closer when they hit (the 3-pointers).”

Navigato said Churchie was difficult to match up against.

“Their offense was a little different than everyone else we’ve played against,” Navigato said.

Guido Gambone (1909-1969) was an important Italian ceramic artist in the 1950s and ‘60s. His colorful vases in modern shapes with almost comicstrip-shaped animal figures were very different from designs by earlier Italian makers. He used thick glazes that left a rough surface. Although he lost his leg in 1934, he became director at Industria Ceramica Salernitana in 1935, and in 1943, he started his own pottery in Vietri. In 1950, he moved again and worked at his own pottery with his son Bruno (1936-present). After Guido died, his son took over the company and today makes and sells minimalist vases in muted colors, very different from the colorful abstract and playful works of his father. Guido Gambone marked his pieces with the name “Gambone,” a donkey and the word “Italy” for many years, but some later work is signed only “Gambone, Italy.” Bruno signs all his work Gambone, Italy. *** Q: We have a mission-style rocking chair with a metal tag that reads “Karpen Guaranteed Upholstered Furniture, Chicago - New York.” It has a removable cushioned seat. What can you tell me about the maker and age of this piece?

A: S. Karpen & Bros. was founded

by Solomon Karpen in Chicago in 1880. Within a few years, all of his eight brothers were involved in the business. By 1899, the company was the world’s largest maker of upholstered furniture. Tables and other non-upholstered furniture were also made. A showroom opened in New York in 1905, a factory in Michigan City, Indiana, in 1916, and a factory in Los Angeles in 1927. The company was sold and became part of International Furniture in 1952. The Karpen name was used on furniture for several years. Your rocker was made between 1905 and 1916. *** Q: I’d like some information on “Happy Boy,” a Royal Worcester figurine of a child lying on his back with

his knees up and his hands under his head. It’s stamped on the back “Happy Boy, modeled by F.G. Doughty” and has what I think is the date stamp for 1941 and the number 3010.

One source I found reads “model No. 3010, Happy Boy, was made by F. Gertner.”

A: “Happy Boy” was modeled by Freda Doughty and was produced from 1932 to 1948. Freda and her sister both worked at Royal Worcester.

They were born in Italy and moved to England as children. Freda made figurines of children while her sister did large bird figurines. Happy Boy was reported as worth over $1,000 a few years ago, but the value of figurines has gone down and it may not sell for as much today. *** Q: I have an old silver serving spoon marked with two crossed tools and the letters “K” above and “B” below. One of the tools is a hammer. Can you tell me who made this spoon?

A: Krider & Biddle used this mark between 1860 and about 1870. Peter L. Krider was in business in Philadelphia about 1850. John W. Biddle became a partner in 1859 and the name of the business became Krider & Biddle in 1860. The company made flatware, hollowware, and medals. It was sold to new owners about 1870 and the name was changed. *** Q: I have an old iron bank. The base is a 5 3/8-inch square and it’s 7 1/4 inches high. There are doors pictured on each side with the words “Columbia Bank” over each door. The bottom is marked “Made by Kenton Hdwe. Mfg. Co., Kenton, Ohio, USA.” The bank has a combination lock. Is

A: Collectors call your bank the “Columbia Bank.” It was made by the Kenton Hardware Manufacturing Co., which started as Kenton (Ohio) Lock Manufacturing Co. in 1890. Kenton began making toys in 1894 and changed its name. The company’s earliest known “still” banks (as opposed to “mechanical” banks that have moving parts) are the Columbia series, cast-iron banks that depict the Administration Building at the Chicago World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893 in four different sizes. Some are painted. Original cast iron banks are popular with collectors. Your 7-inch Columbia bank was made between 1893 and 1904. They have sold for $350 to $1,100, depending on condition, especially the amount of paint still intact. *** Q: Is there a market out there for a matchbook collection?

pain following a stroke

Dear Dr. K: I’ve been in pain ever since I had a stroke about six months ago. What will relieve it?

Dear Reader: Pain is a frequent complication of stroke. It generally falls into one of two types, local or central.

Local pain results from joint and muscle problems.

Strokes can make some muscles weak and stiff.

That, in turn, can make the muscles hurt when they move (or are moved).

It also can cause the bones in a joint moved by those muscles to shift out of their proper place, producing pain in the joint. Treatment is fairly straightforward and may involve a variety of options: • range-of-motion and stretching exercises; • over-the-counter or prescription pain relievers and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs); • use of a sling or armrest to support a weak shoulder; • strategic positioning of a weak leg while in a wheelchair or in bed; • cortisone injections to reduce inflammation.

Electrical stimulation of the involved muscles, botulinum toxin injections to relax tight and stiff muscles, or acupuncture may also help.

Less common, but more difficult to manage, is a neurological condition called central pain syndrome (CPS). CPS results from damage to sensory pathways.

What are sensory pathways? Sensations (like pain, heat, touch, vibration) from all over the body travel up nerves to the spinal cord. From there they travel up the spinal cord to different centers in the brain. Strokes can affect those centers. As a result, the brain misinterprets normal sensory input as painful sensations.

Central pain is typically constant and moderate to severe in intensity. The pain may be felt over a large part of the body or in

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff specific areas. It is always on the side of the body affected by the stroke. It may be felt as a burning pain, pins and needles, or a pressing, sharp or aching pain.

Pain medications may not be effective. However, anticonvulsants such as gabapentin (Neurontin) and pregabalin (Lyrica) may help. Stress tends to increase the intensity of all symptoms. Therefore, managing stress may also help reduce pain.

Another stroke complication that causes pain is spasticity, an involuntary contraction of your muscles. This leads to stiff, tight muscles and tendons that make stretching difficult. Without treatment, the affected muscles may remain in abnormal and often painful positions.

Treatments include: • physical therapy that involves stretching the affected muscles and using braces that hold the muscles in a normal position; • medications, including muscle relaxants and anti-anxiety drugs known as benzodiazepines.

• Botulinum toxin (Botox) injections, which can ease spasticity by blocking the signals sent from nerves to muscles. Injections of a different toxin, called phenol, reduce nerve impulses to the spastic muscle. A third possibility is an implanted pump that delivers a muscle relaxant to the spinal cord.

Finally, a doctor can surgically correct a tendon that has become contracted and permanently shortened due to spasticity. So you have many options to treat the pain you’re suffering following your stroke.

Thanks for caring about teenagers Dr. Wallace: I’m writing this letter to you because it’s good therapy for me and I don’t want one teen to travel down the same drug path that I followed.

I’m an 18-year-old guy who is a recovering drug addict.

I was hooked on many drugs for several years, but my main addiction was to cocaine and crack (snorting and injecting).

I began smoking marijuana at the age of 12 and before long I was doing a lot of drugs.

By the time I was 16, my habit was costing me up to $100 a day. I earned my money by working honestly, as well as dealing drugs and stealing anything and everything.

Before I suffered a breakdown last June, I went through $200 in 24 hours getting the drugs to support my habit.

In July I realized that drugs were going to kill me and I didn’t want to die. I asked for help and was placed into treatment. Three times in the hospital I was rushed to the emergency room because of withdrawal complications. The head doctor told me I would die if I didn’t stay clean.

I am now out of the hospital and it has been really hard to stay away from drugs. I’ve only used marijuana twice and LSD once, but I’ve been clean for the last 58 days now and I’m very proud of myself. I’ve made a lot of progress and I’m still obsessed with drugs, but with my faith in God, I’ll make

Please tell me what I should do. He wanted me to come to California after I graduated from high school, and I graduated in June of this year.

David Bird, the prolific bridge-book writer from England, has got to the nitty-gritty of the game in “52 Bridge Mistakes to Avoid” (Master Point Press).

The highlighted errors are split 13 on bidding, 25 on declarer play and 14 on defense. Each chapter contains a few deals and ends with a list of useful tips.

This layout is in the chapter entitled “Not Thinking Straight,” which could refer to every mistake anyone makes.

Dear Abby: I’m writing about the letter you printed from “Excited in Maryland” (Aug. 16), whose wife makes snide comments about his impending retirement. That milestone is the biggest, scariest life change people make – a time marker like no other.

With many people, our identity is tied to our careers. In my case, I enjoyed a long, successful career as a social worker, counselor, teacher and mother. I wasn’t the primary breadwinner and was able to work less than full time. When I retired seven years ago, my day was my own, with little accountability to my husband. I had quiet when I wanted it, music of my own choosing, ate when and what I wanted – and complete privacy all day, every day.

My husband, one of the nicest men I’ve ever known, retired two years ago, and I still haven’t come to terms with the fact that he’s home all the time. He doesn’t ask me to do anything differently, but he’s HERE, which means my definition of privacy has changed. I realize how lucky I am to have him, our long marriage, our health, our kids and financial stability. I just need a predictable block of time I can depend on to have the house all to myself.

That letter writer’s wife may be worried about the huge change that is coming.

My husband has enough interests, hobbies and projects that he’s always busy, but we are different people. He can get lost in his project while I’m “on alert” for any interruption, real or imagined.

A couple of my friends have decided to postpone retirement because they don’t want to be home all day with their husbands. They are both mental health therapists, but they can’t talk
