Runners for event triple in 2nd year

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Geneva resident Kevin Russell made many children and adults happy Sunday by wearing a full Santa outfit on the Fox River Trail.

At one point a couple near the Fabyan Windmill waved him over, so he could be included in their wedding photos.

“I’m glad I could spread some Christmas cheer,” Russell said, adding it was his girlfriend Amy McTeague’s idea to wear the Santa outfit.

Russell and McTeague, who was dressed as an elf, were two of the more than 275 runners in the second annual Underground Polar Express Fun Run. The 3.1-mile run took participants from the Batavia Riverwalk up through Geneva and back down to finish at Batavia Pal Joey’s on the east side of the Fox River.

The run, which Batavia resident Karen Willuweit and her friends started in 2013, combines their interest in raising money for charities and their love of running.

The run benefits a different charity every year, Willuweit said. Proceeds from the first race in 2013 went to the Batavia Interfaith Food Pantry, and all the money raised from Sunday’s race will go to Batavia-based Suicide Prevention Services of America.

“Last year, we had 80 people and [operated] it out of the trunk of my car,” Willuweit said. “This year, it blew up and turned into this wonderful grassroots run.”

The cause was a personal one for Willuweit this year. She said her brother, Brian, 33, committed suicide in 2008 and Suicide Prevention Services counseled and helped her family.

Stephanie Weber, Suicide Prevention Services executive director, told participants after the run that 84 cents out of every dollar donated to the organization goes to direct services for people who reach out to it for help.

“We operate on a shoestring budget … because we want to save lives,” Weber said.

St. Charles North, East drill teams raise more than $100,000 at Kick-A-Thon KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The drill teams from St. Charles North and St. Charles East high schools united to raise $100,021.14 with its annual Kick-A-Thon event.

The total raised was announced Dec. 6, before the schools’ varsity basketball

teams played.

Proceeds were donated to the Geneva Chapter of the LivingWell Resource Center, the American Cancer Society and Fox Valley Food for Health. It was the 21st anniversary of the event, and during that time, the fundraiser has brought in $878,040, according to organizers.

Organizers noted that many former drill team members returned to kick for the event.

Fire marshal: Be aware of Christmas tree dangers KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@shawmedia.com The Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshal issued a news release reminding the public about the dangers of home fire incidents involving Christmas trees and decorations during the months of December and January.

Christmas trees, holiday decorations, overloaded extension cords and the use of candles are linked to seasonal homes fires during the holiday season, according to the release.

“As people engage in a variety of tasks and activities, often times basic fire safety takes a second place in the list of priorities,” said Larry Matkaitis, the state fire marshal, in the release. “Residents should be proactive in discarding old decorations, extension cords, and remember to water natural Christmas trees frequently”.

Last year in Illinois 91 home fires reported were caused

by Christmas trees and other decorations, the release stated. According to the National Fire Protection Association, between 2007 and 2011, fire departments in the United States estimated that two out of five fires were linked to Christmas trees, holiday lights and other decorations, between December and January.

On average, the origin of 230 home fires were Christmas trees. Those fires resulted in the deaths of nine civilians, 22 injuries, and close to $18.3 million in direct property damages.

The OSFM offered the following tips to residents: • When using an artificial tree, be sure it is labeled, certified or identified by the manufacturer as UL listed. Make sure artificial trees are tested and labeled as fire resistant.

• When using a fresh tree, make sure the green needles don’t fall off when touched.

This could mean that the tree is brittle and dry, therefore

making it hazardous.

• Before placing the tree in the stand, cut an inch or two from the base of the trunk. Add water to the tree stand, and be sure to water it daily. Put the tree in a sturdy water stand.

• Make sure the tree is not blocking an exit and is at least three feet away from any heat sources such as fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents or space heaters.

• Always turn off Christmas tree lights before leaving the room or going to bed.

• After Christmas, get rid of the tree. Dried-out trees are fire hazards and should not be left in the home or garage, or placed outside the home.

• Use lights that have the label of an independent testing laboratory, and make sure you know whether they are designed for indoor or outdoor use. Only use “indoor” lights indoors, and “outdoor” lights only outdoors.

• Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords, or

loose bulb connections.

• Use no more than three light sets on any extension cord. Extension cords should be placed against the wall to avoid tripping hazards.

Avoid running cords under rugs, around furniture legs or across doorways. Do not overload extension cords, outlets

or power tips.

• Never use lighted candles to decorate the tree. Read the manufacturer’s instructions for the number of LED strands that are safe to connect.

• Bring outdoor electrical lights inside after the holidays to prevent hazards and make them last longer.

Saints hand Vikings their 1st loss

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The Geneva boys basketball team isn’t short on much, but polished ball-handlers is one such element.

St. Charles East succeeded in its mission of cranking up enough defensive heat to throw the Vikings’ paint-oriented attack off-kilter. The Saints used a decisive 21-0 blitz during the third quarter to take command, and held off the Vikings, 77-69, in Saturday’s marquee, early-season Upstate Eight Conference River matchup.

Geneva (6-1, 2-1 UEC River) committed 25 turnovers compared to 11 for East (7-1, 4-0 UEC River).

“That was our game plan was ball pressure because we know they’re missing Pace Temple and they’re short on ball-handlers,” East senior guard Jake Asquini said. “We really wanted to get up on them, pressure them full court, to make them feel uncomfortable, and it worked. They had [25] turnovers.”

East point guard Cole Gentry and Geneva wing Nate Navigato – strong contenders for conference player of the year honors – canceled each other out with 29 points apiece. But while Gentry is as natural a point guard as they come, the 6-foot-7 Navigato had to shoulder much of his team’s ball-handling duties.

“Size is great and [the Vikings] have a lot of it and they have some very skilled size guys, but I still think guards control the game, and I think we have one of the best guards in the state in Cole Gentry,” East coach Pat Woods said. “It’s tough, Nate had to bring the ball up most of the time and then try to create his shot.”

Gentry was credited with seven steals and followed his pattern of revving up his offense as the game unfolds. He scored 20 points in the second half and continued another of his trends – lights out, fourth quarter free throw shooting (8 of 8).

“We had a speed advantage for sure,” Gentry said. “Obviously they’re bigger, they outrebounded us by a lot, but we thought we could make up for it with their turnovers. We wanted to speed them up. That was the whole thing, just speed them up and get them out of their comfort zone, and I thought we did that.”

The Vikings led, 37-34, on an off-balance, high-arching 3-pointer from Navigato at the halftime buzzer. A pair of baskets from senior guard Daniel Santacaterina had the Vikings ahead, 4135, but East took its first lead of the sec-

From there, the Vikings were cooked, particularly with Gentry run-

ning the show.

“We’re not the type of team that’s going to be able to chase a team like St. Charles East,” Geneva coach Phil Ralston said. “That’s because they’re going to try and spread you out and make it a foul-fest late. Credit St. Charles East for being able to impose their will on us but shame on us for allowing it to happen, too. We have some guys who have got some growing up to do.”

While the injured Temple’s potential season debut in 2015 should greatly bolster Geneva’s backcourt, Ralston is seeking improved, fundamental play from the rest of the squad in the meantime.

“I think having Pace back will make a big difference but that’s not the only issue we have,” Ralston said. “We have other guys who need to grow up and be varsity basketball players. It’s about [setting picks], catching the ball, mak-

ing good passes. A lot of our turnovers were just off of very poor pass play.

That’s just the reality.”

The Saints had four starters in double figures, with Mick Vyzral (15 points), Asquini (11) and Evan DiLeonardi (10) joining Gentry. Junior wing James McQuillan returned after missing four-plus games with a concussion, chipping in five points in limited time off the bench.

Woods was proud of his free-flowing offense finding ways to produce despite the Vikings’ glut of towering defenders.

“I can draw up 10 thousand, million plays, but to teach kids to make reads on the fly in crucial situations, we do that all the time [in practice],” Woods said.

The Saints and Vikings will meet again Feb. 5 in Geneva and could see each other a third time in a Class 4A regional to be hosted by the Vikings.

A pair of Rosenfeldt midcourt steals midway through the fourth quarter helped East to a quick 6-0 run that cut Geneva’s lead to 48-40.

Novak, who had nine points, scored a layup moments later, and the advantage was back to 10.

Geneva maintained its distance down the stretch behind a 17 for 28 effort from the free throw line, highlighted by Whitley’s 10 for 11 night. East was 5 for 11 from the line, and the discrepancy between free throw attempts was just part of what accumulated on an off night.

Kyra Washington’s 3 from the top of the arc cut Geneva’s lead to 52-47 with less than a minute remaining, but that was the last time the Saints threatened.

“Even with all of that against us, I thought they were in the game right until the very

end,” East coach Lori Drumtra said. “I thought they were maybe a 3-pointer or so away, and we’d be right back into it. We’d get a little bit of a burst going, and then just couldn’t sustain it for whatever reason. We’d miss a layup or miss a basket or foul or something like that.

It was hard to really get in rhythm like we like to do.”

Rosenfeldt (nine points) and Washington (eight) followed Claussner for the Saints.

Drumtra said she was “not crazy about” playing on backto-back nights – the Saints won at Batavia Friday – but in the next breath added the Vikings had to do the same. And without a top player.

Meadows said McCloughan remains day-to-day, adding that she looked “more like Janie” during Saturday’s shootaround.

“I’m sure this band isn’t helping her at all,” Meadows

grinned as the schools’ boys teams warmed up for the nightcap of a girls-boys doubleheader.

Until McCloughan is back inspiring bands once more, the Vikings still feel confident in

their rotation. And then some.

“I think we’re just looking for each other as a team, playing like a team,” Whitley said.

“And when we’re looking for opportunities to score, that’s just part of it.”

ST. CHARLES – Most of the Geneva girls basketball team shared the court with players other than senior stalwarts Janie McCloughan and Abby Novak last season.

Maybe that’s why the Vikings looked so comfortable climbing to a double-digit, first half lead against St. Charles East on Saturday.

With McCloughan out for the third straight game with a mild concussion and Novak fighting early foul trouble, the Vikings’ depth and youth shined against the Saints in a 57-49 Upstate Eight Conference River Division victory.

“I mean, it’s a good accomplishment,” Vikings sophomore post Grace Loberg said.

“People like Margaret [Whitley] and Kate [Rogers], they did amazing. Stephanie [Hart], she’s doing good things, as well. And we knew we’d have Abby, and Janie we know will be back playing.”

Loberg ranked among the usual suspects leading the way for Geneva (8-0, 4-0 UEC River).

She was promoted to the varsity as a freshman around this time last season as the Vikings absorbed injuries.

On this night, Loberg finished with 22 points and 17 rebounds and had notched a double-double by halftime, when the Vikings enjoyed a 3020 lead.

With East (7-2, 3-1) owing part of its fast start to the aggressive play of freshman post Sara Rosenfeldt, Geneva coach Sarah Meadows challenged Loberg to bring her own physicality.

Loberg wasn’t the only one to respond. Freshman guard Margaret Whitley continued to excel in a starting role, matching Loberg’s 20 points – the same total for East senior guard Katie Claussner.

“Our passing was going very well,” Whitley said. “It got kind of sloppy with the press break with throwing it in the middle and getting it stolen by Sara, but we got over it and did well with moving the ball and finding everyone.”

Dear Let Down: The most important ingredient in any relationship is communication, and you and Alex have been together long enough that you should be able to level with each other. Dear Abby: Recently, our state became one that allows same-sex couples to wed. My partner, “Alex,” and I have been together for 18 years. We had planned to be married last spring, but a death in the family put our wedding on hold.

When I found out about the ruling, I expected Alex to be excited and suggest we go ahead and marry. To my disappointment, he didn’t seem to care. He hasn’t mentioned marriage once, and when I bring it up, he’s quiet and doesn’t respond.

We’re older, and because of health issues we don’t have an active sex life. I’m wondering if my relationship with him has been downgraded to “roommate” without me realizing it. Do I push this?

We have all heard the expression “necessity is the mother of invention,” penned by Jonathan Swift. It was amended by Mark Twain (“necessity is the mother of taking chances”) and Thorstein Veblen (“invention is the mother of necessity”).

How does Swift’s line apply to this deal? South is in three no-trump. After West leads his fourth-highest spade, what should declarer do?

North was aggressive in jumping straight to three no-trump. But he decided that if his diamond suit was worth five tricks, the contract would probably make. Alternatively, if partner could not get more than two or three tricks from the suit, probably even two no-trump would be too high. Also, by not inviting game, he kept the defenders in the dark about the strength of South’s hand.

Note that if North had raised to two no-trump, South would have had a close decision. Yes, he had only 15 high-card points, an apparent minimum, but he had three aces, one king and respectable spot cards. So it would have been reasonable to bid game, especially when vulnerable.

Now back to the play in three no-trump. South started with eight top tricks: two hearts, five diamonds and one club. He needed a ninth from somewhere. At the table, South played a low spade from the dummy at trick one. East won with his jack and returned the suit, giving the defenders the first five tricks.

It was a necessity for South to call for dummy’s spade queen. His best chance of not only a spade trick but also his ninth winner was that West had underled the ace-king.

If East had either of those honors, the contract was almost certainly unmakable.
