Section to highlight Bulldogs’ season EDITOR’S NOTEBOOK Kathy Gresey The Kane County Chronicle will celebrate the Batavia Bulldogs state championship win with a commemorative section next week.

The 12-page, magazine-style section will highlight the Bulldogs football season.

It will include a recap of the state championship game, a week-by-week recap of the season, a team photo, additional photos, memorable quotes from players and coaches, stats and a guest column from Claire Jacobi, a Batavia High School senior who spent the season on the sidelines with the football team.

In addition, the section will include congratulatory ads from local businesses, as well as information about how to order a season DVD from BATV. The commemorative section will be distributed to subscribers and single-copy vendors Friday in Batavia.

Copies of the section also will be inserted into the Batavia Republican, a sister paper of the Chronicle, on Dec. 26.

••• ‘Tis the season to give back.

Earlier this month, the Kane County Chronicle invited Paula Yensen, executive director of the United Way of Central Kane County, to speak to its employees about the organization’s annual fundraising campaign.

Paula was joined by Sue Tansey,

director of development for the DayOneNetwork. The two spoke about the importance of United Way and how the group assists organizations in Kane County.

The goal of the United Way of Central Kane County this year is to raise $450,000. And I’m proud to say the Chronicle has helped contribute to that amount.

Our office set a goal of raising $600 for the organization, which it did meet.

That amount will be matched by a $500 contribution from Shaw Media, which owns the Chronicle and is a supporter of United Way. Of course, any amount – no matter how big or small – is much appreciated by the local organization.

Whooping cough is caused by a bacterial infection and is defined as persistent, violent and rapid coughing lasting at least two weeks. A highly contagious disease, whooping cough is spread by breathing in the bacteria expelled during a coughing fit or sneeze.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported the number of cases in Illinois increased two-fold between 2011 and 2012.

The pertussis vaccine is offered to mothers and others in close contact with infants in an approach called “cocooning,” the release stated.

“Cocooning surrounds and protects infants from the disease until they have built up immunity through their own immunizations, which do not start until two months of age,” Farrell said.

ics outside of its offices, Farrell said in the release.

Eligible children may receive all the CDC-recommended vaccinations through the agency’s Vaccines for Children’s program.

The vaccines’ doses are provide by the federal government free of charge.

Cadence Health is responsible for staffing and supplies. In total, the program in Kane County has provided vaccinations worth more than $130,000, according to the release.

VFW and American Legion struggle to reach young veterans

t 52 years old, Mark Powell says he is one of the youngest members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion posts in St. Charles.

Powell – who helped revive the city’s Memorial Day parade several years ago after the older veterans “ran out of energy” and canceled it one year – said the lack of younger members doesn’t bode well for the VFW, which sold its building to the city this year.

“In two years if nothing changes, I think it will be the end of the VFW here in St. Charles,” he said. “You’ve got to have younger members joining these groups.”

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, about 25,400 veterans live in Kane County.

Representatives of veterans organizations in the Tri-Cities reported their memberships total fewer than 200, but the number of active members vary depending on the function and time of year.

Dan Clark, commander of American Legion Post 75 in Geneva, said his organization boasts about 195 members, but membership declines each year, primarily because World War II veterans are dying.

“Unfortunately, we haven’t been able to replace them at the same rate,” Clark said.

Bob Pennington, an 88-year-old World War II veteran who attended last month’s Veterans Day ceremony in St. Charles, said he wished new veterans would join the VFW and American Legion.

“We need fresh faces to keep the organizations going,” he said.

Clark, who waited to join the American Legion until his daughter was older, said he understands that young veterans likely are more focused on starting a family and a career than joining veterans organizations.

“Unless something changes at the national level, I think these clubs – the doors are going to close one by one,” Powell said.

Clark suspects the traditional veterans organizations have been replaced by resources and communities online.

“I think veterans are less inclined to come to a brickand-mortar facility,” he said.

“We need to find the marketing tools that reach out to this generation.”

But perhaps the biggest obstacle in getting new members is not knowing the identities

of the younger veterans, several local VFW and American Legion representatives said.

“There’s just no way to find the guys, either,” Powell said.

“If we knew where 500 veterans were in St. Charles, we’d probably put together a campaign to reach out to them.”

For Powell and Dave Jordan, a veteran retired from the Naval Reserves, encouragement from WWII- and Korean War-era veterans prompted them to become active in veterans organizations, they said.

Jordan has belonged to American Legion Post 504 in Batavia for 16 years, he said, but he was just a paying member until about three years ago, when WWII veteran John Nuckles encouraged him to

become more active.

“He would always come to our house every year to collect the dues,” Jordan said.

“He finally got to the point saying, ‘Us guys are getting old. You youngsters should come to a meeting.’ ” And so Jordan did.

In addition to contributing to the community, Jordan said, participating in a veterans organization is a good way to meet others with common experiences and interests. He said it can be a potential networking opportunity.

“Your civilian career could be enhanced,” he said.

Powell said a lack of participation in veterans organizations is part of a larger problem.

A few dozen St. Charles

Mark Powell, member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion posts residents might attend the city’s Veterans Day celebration, he said. If the thousands of veterans in Kane County aren’t willing to come out and honor veterans on that and other holidays, he said, that’s part of the problem, too.

“The city bends over backwards for us,” Powell said, “but we don’t know how to inspire the 26,000 veterans in Kane County to come out and join us.”

A representative from the American Legion’s headquarters in Indianapolis did not return a phone call seeking comment about membership recruiting efforts. An email to the VFW National Headquarters was not returned.

8LOCAL BRIEF Parking in snow routes prohibited in Geneva GENEVA – When road conditions become hazardous in Geneva, streets that are posted with “Snow Emergency Route” signage are cleared of snow and ice first.

Snow emergency routes typically are streets that have a large volume of traffic and higher speed limits. Parking on all snow routes is prohibited when the snowfall exceeds two inches or more.

Once snow emergency routes have been cleared of snow and ice, crews will target secondary roadways, alleys, culs-de-sac and dead-end streets.

Parking is not permitted on secondary streets when there

is a snowfall of three inches or more.

It is strongly recommended residents remove their cars from the streets when a snow storm is forecasted to avoid being ticketed or having their vehicles towed.

Parking is not permitted on secondary streets at any time within 12 hours after a snowfall of three inches or more or until a street has been plowed to the curb.

Depree M. Sharp, 29, of the 100 block of North Jefferson Street, Batavia, was charged Friday with two counts of residential burglary and two counts of theft, both felonies.

The charges are the result of

an investigation from residential burglaries that occurred in April and October on the 400 block of Houston Street and the 0-100 block of North Jefferson Street, respectively.

Batavia police detectives are continuing the investigation and pursuing the possibility of additional victims of similar offenses, according to a news release.

Police officials could not be reached for comment.

CANDACE L. HEIDEMAN

ST. CHARLES – David H. Phipps, 87, formerly of St. Charles, died Sunday, Dec. 8, 2013, at Lewis Memorial Christian Village in Springfield.

David was born March 17, 1926, in Stevens Point, Wis., the son of Dr. Cornelius Phipps and Grace Hart Phipps. He married Alice Blaufuss on Feb. 5, 1955.

He is survived by his wife, Alice; daughter, Peggy Goetsch (husband, Warren) of Williamsville; son, D. Scott Phipps (wife, Susan) of Moscow; and five grandchildren, Heather Goetsch of Brooklyn, N.Y., Andrew Goetsch of Charleston, Matthew Goetsch of DeKalb, Michael Phipps of Palatine and Ryan Phipps of Columbia, Mo. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Mary Jane Phipps and Elizabeth Ullrich; one brother, C. Mark Phipps; and one grandson, Colin Phipps.

David was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Europe during World War II and later during the Korean conflict. He graduated from Lincoln High School in Manitowoc, Wis., and attended the University of Missouri. He retired from Chicago Staple in 1996.

David loved history, woodworking, taking the backroads, being with his family and sailing. He was actively involved in scouting, including the Sea Explorers. His generous spirit, storytelling, quick wit and hearty laugh will be greatly missed. He was loved by everyone who knew him.

Cremation was accorded by Lincoln Land Cremation Society.

The family will host a memorial gathering from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 22, at St. John United Church of Christ, Seventh and Maple streets, Lincoln. A private family service will follow. Memorial contributions may be made to Wounded Warriors Partnership or the donor’s choice.

CHARLES – A St. Charles church that receives hundreds to thousands of dollars in donations this time of year through its “poor boxes” reported Monday that money and gift cards were stolen from the objects, according to a St. Charles Police Department report.

Because checks were in the boxes, employees of St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 2900 E. Main St., were convinced that donations were not down but that someone was stealing the money, police reported.

As a test, an employee placed $6 in one of the poor boxes – which are locked and placed around the church – on the afternoon of Dec. 5.

The cash was gone when she checked the box Monday morning, police reported.

A $125 gift card to Walmart was reported missing from elsewhere in the church.

Police reportedly found no signs of tampering and advised the church to collect donations another way and to be more safety conscious.

It is not known how much money was stolen, police said.

The church employee declined to comment when contacted Friday afternoon.

Vivien and other student council members presented more than 800 toys Friday to organizers for the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program that benefits families in need.

“I hope their Christmas will be more merry,” she said.

Grace McWayne fourthgrade student Madison Foy brought Connect Four, a game that she has enjoyed with her own family.

“I thought other kids would enjoy it,” Madison said.

Patrick Kackert, Toys for Tots coordinator for Kane County, said the donation was greatly appreciated.

Grace McWayne students have worked over the past few months fundraising and collecting new, unwrapped toys to help support the Toys for Tots program.

“Our donations are down this year,” Kackert said. “This

will really give it a boost.”

The donation represented the largest made by one organization to Toys for Toys this holiday season, Kackert said.

“They have definitely gone above and beyond,” he said.

The mission of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program, which began in 1947, is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December and distribute the gifts to children

in need.

This is the fifth year the school has collected toys for the program.

“I think they will like them and be surprised,” she said.

Advanced Disposal will collect leaves in paper yard waste bags that are left on the curb on scheduled garbage collection days.

A bird with supreme acrobatic talents GOOD NATURED Pam Otto Every grade school has one. You know what I’m talking about – the kid who could climb onto the monkey bars and, in one or two deft maneuvers, defy gravity.

At our school, it was a boy named Danny. He’d flip and spin; he’d hang upside down; he’d swing with ease from bar to bar.

In short, Danny was a lot like a white-breasted nuthatch.

About the same size as a sparrow – though sleeker in shape – sitta carolinensis is, first and foremost, an important member of our woodland ecosystems. But it also is one outstanding acrobat. If there’s a tasty morsel at the end of a tree branch, it will swing and sway as much as needed to nab it. If there’s a tasty morsel underneath the branch, it’ll hang upside down to grab it. And if that tasty bit is way low on the tree’s trunk, this talented bird will head down – with the greatest of ease – to stab at it with its narrow, upturned bill.

Common in rich woodlands throughout Kane County, white-breasted nuthatches are active foragers that can be identified by their distinctive trait of hopping face-first down tree trunks. These birds also are frequent visitors at birdfeeders and sometimes are mistaken for black-capped chickadees. are easy to spot just about anywhere there are hardwood trees and, in the winter, bird feeders. Even better, they’re easy to identify. The bird’s namesake white breast is balanced by a blue-gray back and wings; its white head is topped with a black cap that extends down the

nape, or neck. Many birds also have a light, rust-colored cast to the feathers on the lower part of the belly and underneath the tail.

At first glance, the

white-breasted nuthatch can appear similar to another bird common in our area, the black-capped chickadee. But confusing these two birds is like getting Santa Claus

mixed up with Father Christmas. The differences are significant, if you just know what to look for.

For one, chickadees’ black caps extend below their eyes, and are accessorized with a black throat patch. The white-breasted nuthatch’s black “cap” is really more of a toupee. It covers only the top of the head and neck; the bird’s facial feathers are white.

Another difference is in the birds’ bills. Chickadee bills are short and pointy, just right for carrying away small bits of wood as the bird excavates a nest. They also do a good job of pecking away at seed husks and nutshells.

In comparison, the white-breasted nuthatch’s bill is longer and thinner. It can “hatch,” or peck open, nuts and seeds but is not used for homebuilding. Instead, white-breasted nuthatches shop around for ready-made homes – cavities already created by chickadees or woodpeckers.

Although many local birds forage on tree trunks, only nuthatches glean with their head pointing downward. It’s a behavior unique to the genus, and one that’s unmistakable.

And as any birder will tell you, unmistakable identifying characteristics are invaluable, no matter what the species.

(Note: Red-breasted nuthatches also occur in Kane County, in winter, and display this

same head-down behavior.

But because they’re typically associated with conifers, their distribution is limited. Count yourself lucky if you see a red-breasted nuthatch.)

White-breasted nuthatches occupy a broad niche in our local ecosystems. They feed on insects as well as seeds. In fact, many people first become acquainted with this bird when it visits a feeder to feast on two of its favorites, peanuts and sunflower seeds.

But it’s in its natural habitat, our oak-hickory woodlands, that this bird really shines. There you can watch them flit from branch to branch, often hanging upside down as they poke and prod in search of food.

Residents ask board to ‘lower the levy’

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Residents plan to attend Tuesday’s Batavia School District 101 Board meeting to request the school board lower the district’s proposed levy.

“They want a break,” said Batavia resident Sylvia Keppel, who started a website, www.lowerthelevy.com.

“They need a break.”

The school board meeting will begin at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday at the Rosalie Jones Administration Center, 335 W. Wilson St., Batavia. The hearing on

the school district’s 2013 tax levy, payable in 2014, will begin at 7 p.m.

The meeting will be streamed live online on BATV beginning at 6:45 p.m. To accommodate additional attendees who don’t plan to make public comments, a satellite location will be set up at Batavia High School, 1201 Main St. To drive their point across, Keppel and others have posted 100 “Lower The Levy” yard signs across the city. Batavia School District 101 has proposed a $73 million levy, up from last year’s $66 million extension.

As proposed, the owner of a home valued at about $230,000 would see taxes decrease by about $20 next year.

Assistant Superintendent for Finance Kris Monn has said this year’s levy will need to be large enough to capture all of the equalized assessed value returning to the district’s tax base from the expiration of Aurora’s tax increment financing district No. 2, which includes the Chicago Premium Outlets mall in Aurora and significant industrial properties in the Interstate 88 corridor.

the Aurora TIF No. 2 properties has allowed the school board to begin to restore some of the reductions made over the past four years, especially in the area of class size and instructional support.

Keppel has proposed that the money from TIF No. 2 be distributed back to taxpayers through a decrease in the levy.

“If that money were to be distributed to the tax base, that would result in a drop in property taxes for the average homeowner of a $240,000 house of nearly $400,” Keppel said.

GENEVA – Geneva city officials will consider a $4.7 million request for the 2013 general city property tax levy, a 2 percent or $92,000 increase over last year’s levy of $4.6 million.

Aldermen acting as the Committee of the Whole approved the estimated levy last month. Aldermen are expected to take final action on the levy at the City Council meeting 7 p.m. Monday at city hall, 22 S. First St., Geneva.

The proposed increase would cost a house with a market value of $250,000 an additional $35, officials said.

A house with a market value of $350,000 would have an in-

crease of nearly $50 in taxes, and a house valued a $450,000 would have an increase of nearly $65 in taxes, officials said.

The property tax levy is a portion of the city’s overall operating expenses of $16.3 million, records show. Geneva gets almost $12 million in revenue from other sources, such as state income tax, sales tax, permits, court and parking fines and other fees.

The city’s general operating levy will decrease almost 3 percent to reduce the levy for liability and ambulance to increase the police pension levy, officials said.

The levy for retirement is proposed to increase nearly 15 percent to meet the requirements.

THE WASHINGTON POST Congress disgraced itself by refusing to toughen gun laws after the slaughter of children a year ago at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., yawning in the face of a national tragedy. Meanwhile, the battle for reform in state capitals continued and intensified.

Some states that already had lax gun laws, mainly in the South and Midwest, moved to relax them further, in the apparent belief that a Wild West approach would promote a safer citizenry. Montana enacted a measure barring healthcare providers from asking patients whether they own guns; Tennessee cut the waiting period for people who want a handgun permit after they leave a drug or alcohol treatment program; and Alaska and Kansas nullified some federal firearms laws so that they will no longer apply in those states.

According to an analysis by The New York Times of state legislation enacted since the Newtown massacre, about two-thirds of the 109 new firearms laws around the country loosen restrictions.

The irony and tragedy of such efforts is that many states with the most anemic gun laws already have the highest rates of gun deaths, according to a new report from the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. By further relaxing restrictions on weapons, those states may invite even more gun violence.

Meanwhile, eight states have enacted major reforms to curb gun violence in the year since Sandy Hook, the Brady Campaign’s report shows, and a dozen others enacted at least some laws to address the problem.

The survey dents the image of invincibility enjoyed by the National Rifle Association and its brethren in the gun lobby. In fact, America’s gun laws are an evolving patchwork. That offers some hope for further reform, but it also undercuts the effectiveness of restrictions that are in place. Criminals stymied by one state’s restrictions can cross a border to procure what they need in a neighboring state.

Residents’ voices vital in school tax levy process Some residents assembled at a recent Kaneland School District 302 Board meeting applauded when board member Tony Valente strongly criticized fellow board members for what he said was a “tax to the limit” mentality. But it’s unfortunate that Valente’s continued comments throughout the night veered off topic, distracting from a vital conversation that affects so many in the community.

In Kaneland, the levy increase will be 4.58 percent. Julie-Ann Fuchs, the district’s assistant superintendent for business, has laid out the impact for taxpayers: a $425 increase in annual taxes for an owner of a $200,000 home, $638 for the owner of a $300,000 home, $850 for the owner of a $400,000 home and $1,063 for the owner of a $500,000 home. The levy increase was approved, with two board members – Valente and Pedro Rivas – voting against it.

The issue stretches much wider than Kaneland, as homeowners throughout the region are facing higher school taxes. In Geneva School District 304, there will be a

1 percent levy increase, where the owner of a $315,000 home will see taxes increased by $305. And in St. Charles School District 303, that impact will be 2.5 percent.

The Batavia School District 101 levy decision is set to be made next week, but some residents there already are protesting an increase.

Some residents who showed up at Kaneland’s recent meeting said the increase is too high, and it’s not as if it’s a one-time increase. In 2012, the amount levied boosted tax bills $469 for those who owned a $200,000 home and $702 for those who owned a $300,000 home. In 2011, the increase was $337 on a $200,000 home.

That adds up, and residents are right to suggest that those numbers will just keep growing. School districts say that they must seek more tax money because of a declining equalized assessed value. At Kaneland, officials said if the amount asked in the tax levy were lower, services or positions might need to be cut. Rivas has said he wants to see details on what would need to be eliminated.

But Valente pointed out a specific expense he said the district could live without – saying the assignment of two individuals to serve as interim athletic directors for the remainder of the school year would be unnecessary. One is to make $250 a day, not to exceed 100 days, and the other is to make $500 a day, not to exceed 70 days.

While board members – including Rivas – approved the athletic director decision, school districts should consider hearing from residents on such matters. A school district’s residents should be allowed to weigh in on what the district can live without, much like a business suffering through a difficult time would work with those within its operation to make tough choices.

What are the options? Is there another way? What can be done to cut costs? These are questions school boards should be asking, and residents should be partners in the process.

Significantly raising taxes on an annual basis isn’t a good long-term solution.

8SOUND OFF I am calling to express my disgust with not only my taxing school district – St. Charles – but all the school districts who continue to grab more and more money from taxpayers.

People have lost their jobs, have had hours cut and wages cut, and yet the public schools cut very little and refuse to stay within a reasonable budget.

My family is very close to losing our home, and I am very angry with the public schools about this. Please remember these school board members at election time.

The majority of U.S. citizens are Christians.

Christmas is about the birth of Jesus Christ. It is peace on earth and goodwill to men.

A shout out I would like to give a shout out to CarCare on Keslinger Road. They changed my high school daughter’s flat tire free of charge. We appreciated the help, especially because it was 15 degrees outside.

What about the bricks?

Two weeks in a row about the lady in the handicap parking spot. I still would like to know what happened to the bricks they took out of the library sidewalk, and the man was putting them in his truck.

Does anybody know where they went?

Where are our tax dollars going? Where did those bricks go? Who took them?

Not worth a hill of beans It is funny. People worry about the little things that are not worth a hill of beans. It is a no-brainer. It is the law, and we are supposed to follow the law, not stretch it to fit our convenience.

The law is the law – no parking in handicap spaces is the law. Why don’t people worry more about the big things, like

having the unions work with the governments to help the state instead of complaining nothing is fair.

Let’s face it. Life is not fair.

There was a teacher on the news who said she is only getting $60,000 a year to live on.

Now come on, people who live on Social Security only get $500 to $2,000 a month to live on, and have to wait until they are 65 years old, not 45 or 50 like the union people.

The unions are for themselves and no one else, or else why do the teachers unions always strike when kids are in school instead of during the summer.

Why can’t the unions change instead of wanting everything?

You don’t always know Regarding the woman with the handicap parking spot, I don’t know why she called in the first place.

But I have to say, sometimes there are circumstances other people aren’t aware of.

When we take my mother to a fast-food restaurant, my mother uses a walker, and if we are to park in a regular spot to let her out, those spots are too far from the door.

If we stay in the parking lot and don’t pull into a spot, drivers behind us have to wait while my husband pops the trunk.

We get the walker out of the trunk, we unfold the walker, we get my mother out of the

car, and then she has to cross in front of our car and cross a line of traffic in the fast-food driveway.

If we pull into a handicap spot, we are out of the way.

She can get into the restaurant quickly and safely, and my husband parks the car.

You can say she’s handicapped and entitled to be there, but we don’t have a handicap sticker.

So, it’s something to consider.

Our pulling into the handicap spot for my mother is actually doing a service for the other cars who would be sitting behind us for four minutes while we get her out.

Also, yes, Lincoln Park for lights.

Obama and Mandela To many of us, Obama is America’s Mandela.

This is ridiculous I guess with all the commercial duping that is going on to American citizens, we need a whole new system of measurement in the United States.

For instance, I just bought a ream of paper for my copy machine, and I happened to notice instead of 500 sheets being a ream, now it’s 400.

They duped us out of 100 sheets of paper, and the cost is still the same as 500 sheets.

Canned goods – 16 ounce cans of vegetables are now 12 ounces. Cans of soup are now eight-ounce cans. They are charging for smaller cans of soup.

A half-gallon of ice cream is no longer a half-gallon of ice cream, it’s a quart and a half.

It’s really sad that there is no integrity in our advertising, there is no integrity in our corporate system, there is no integrity in our law.

We have no integrity in the United States.

The measurements don’t mean anything – a foot-long hot dog is not a foot.

A foot-long bun is not a foot.

So it’s kind of like – what real-

ly is [actually] what it says it is anymore? Even our food is artificial.

Orange juice is not 100 percent orange juice. We need some truth here. This is ridiculous.

How do you know?

I’m responding to the person who was seeing [people] who have handicap cards but don’t appear to be handicapped.

If you look at me in the store, you would think I was not handicapped by my physical appearance.

But I have very severe heart problems, and I have breathing problems. I cannot breathe that good, and I have severe heart problems, so I can’t walk very far at all.

This is responding to the person who says she sees people with handicap cards but they don’t appear to be handicapped.

It’s not what you look like, it’s about what your heart problems are.

You cannot get a handicap card without a doctor’s permission.

The doctor has to examine you, and you can only get one under the doctor’s guidelines.

If he feels that you need one, he can give you one. If he feels you don’t have one, he cannot give it to you by law.

You can’t go by how you look. I have severe heart problems and severe breathing problems.

One time I was walking and I couldn’t find an electric cart, and I almost passed out.

Not festive without lights Nov. 30, I attended the annual St. Charles Christmas parade and I think that I saw a Dick Pond truck that was in the parade with no Christmas lights on it or decorations.

This is just not right. It should be required to have some lights or decorations on it to be in the Christmas parade.

The Dick Pond truck gets the Scrooge award this year.

jschwab@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The St. Charles East boys basketball team solved the sluggish starts that have proven costly in early-season conference losses.

There’s still loads of room for improvement when it comes to closing games out, but the Saints can happily troubleshoot that area after their giant exhale Friday night.

East saw its 18-point, second-half lead shrivel to one point late, but the Saints fought off Geneva, 61-57, in a dramatic Upstate Eight Conference River clash.

“We were really stressing we’ve got to come out early and hit them,” East junior guard Cole Gentry said.

“Thank God we got that big lead because they made a nice run, but that’s what we’ve been stressing all week – we’ve got to come out ready, come out ready, and we did.”

The Saints doubled up the Vikings for a 28-14 halftime lead, and led 4426 late in the third quarter after consecutive 3-pointers from senior Dom Adduci.

But Geneva (6-2, 1-1 UEC River) cranked up the tension with a huge fourth quarter effort.

Junior post Mike Landi scored 10 of his 12 points in the fourth quarter – including a pair of 3-pointers – and Vikings standout Nate Navigato drained a 3-pointer to slash East’s lead to 57-56 with 34 seconds to go in the game.

The final 30 seconds were even wilder than the rest of the quarter.

Adduci split a pair of free throws to make it 58-56 with 25 seconds to play, and tight AJ Washington defense on Navigato – a major theme of the night – forced a Vikings turnover to return possession to the Saints.

East junior Zach Manibog then split two free throws for a three-point Saints lead with 8.5 seconds to play.

With Geneva facing a three-point deficit, Gentry made an executive decision to foul Geneva point guard Cam Cook with 4.7 seconds left to prevent the Vikings from hoisting a potentially tying 3-point shot.

Gentry said he feared another clutch moment for Navigato.

“I’ve played with Nate forever,” Gentry said. “He hit one last year, and I had a nightmare about that, so I was like, I’ve got to take this foul.”

Cook made the first free throw and missed the second, but the ball was tapped out of bounds to Geneva, giving the Vikings the ball, trailing 59-57, with 3.5 seconds to play.

But in a game in which the whistles largely went Geneva’s way – the Vikings were in the double bonus in the second half before being called for a single foul themselves – Navigato was whistled for an offensive foul as he tried to clear space on the Vikings’ inbound play, effectively squashing the home team’s comeback bid.

Navigato, who erupted for 41 points Saturday against Bloomington, scored all 18 of his points in the second half, when he made 11 straight

free throws.

But the rangy Washington’s shutdown defense on Navigato in the first half loomed large.

“I knew I had to beat him to the spot,” Washington said. “Stay down.

He pumps a lot, he’s got good moves.

I stayed down and hoped that I had help, and fronted him in the post.”

Geneva coach Phil Ralston said his team’s costly first half extended well beyond Navigato’s slow start.

“This wasn’t a Nate issue – this

was a team issue,” Ralston said. “This was us not setting picks to get guys open in the post such as we had designed it. Guys not running plays. We had some guys that were running one play, and guys were running another play. So it’s a lack of communication, too.”

East (3-4, 1-2 UEC River) has had Geneva’s number in recent seasons, and the Vikings might have caught the Saints at a tough time Friday.

After opening the conference schedule with losses at Larkin and at St. Charles North, the Saints desperately needed the win.

“On the board in the classroom before the game, we put ‘Conference championship,’ ” East coach Pat Woods said. “Because, in my opinion, if we wanted a chance at it, we had to win tonight. Tonight was a do-or-die win to keep us in the race. We’ve got some ground to cover if we still want that as our goal, and I think we do.

“I don’t think it’s unreasonable because, I tell you what, with the different teams we’ve saw already plus the ones I’ve scouted, there’s no one that’s going to go through this conference undefeated, in my opinion.”

The Saints looked much more like the team they expect to be on Friday.

Adduci led East with 19 points, while Gentry – who has battled a balky back – was up to his old tricks, scoring 13 points and making a few slithering moves to the basket that supported his contention that he’s nearing 100 percent, physically.

East also benefited from crucial contributions from role players such as Manibog (10 points, three 3-pointers in his first start) and junior Jake Asquini, who hit a 3-pointer to put East up, 56-51, with 1:44 left in the game.

“The thing about it is we got thrown into this conference race so early with, in my opinion, the three toughest teams in conference, on the road,” Woods said. “So we’re just still trying to find our way.”

Junior guard Pace Temple notched 10 points for the Vikings.

Both teams must move beyond Friday’s emotional finish with conference play continuing tonight. Geneva heads to Elgin and St. Charles East takes on visiting Streamwood.

“She’s just coming on,” Geneva coach Sarah Meadows said. “We saw that mismatch all night. … Janie read that and she’s going to attack the basket.”

The Saints fought back, primarily behind the play of senior guard Amanda Hilton, who scored 16 points.

With 2:26 left in the first half, Hilton drove to the basket, was fouled, and hit the free throw to cut Geneva’s lead to 25-23.

Hilton, however, did not get a lot of help from her teammates. Hannah Nowling had nine points and five rebounds, but she and Hilton were the only Saints to score in the second half.

“I talked to the girls about finishing – finishing a shot, finishing a quarter,” East coach Lori Drumtra said. “This was a 4-point game with two minutes left in the [second] quarter and all of a sudden they go in [to halftime] with a 12-point lead. It’s silly turnovers. It’s not getting rebounds. I mean, how many offensive boards did they get? Any team that gets two or three shots at the basket – they’re going to make those.”

The Saints had 26 rebounds compared with 37 for the Vikings, which included 11 on the offensive end.

Abby Novak grabbed nine boards for Geneva to go along with seven points. McCloughan nabbed eight rebounds, and Santos and Michaela Loebel had five apiece.

“Coming off our first conference game, our loss against Batavia, we needed to come into this game meaning business, and I think that we got that done,” McCloughan said. “It is definitely a confidence boost.”

GENEVA – A lot of teams would be happy to win five of their first seven games, but the Geneva girls basketball team entered Friday’s Upstate Eight Conference River Division game against St. Charles East far from pleased with their play so far this season.

“Our team was in a slump,” Geneva senior Sidney Santos said. “We had a team meeting. We were discussing how to make each other better because this team is so close and we really work good with each other. It showed tonight.”

The Vikings (6-2, 1-1 Upstate Eight Conference River DiviSidney Santos sion) closed the first half with a 10-0 run to break open a tight game and went on to rout the Saints, 60-38.

St. Charles East (4-5, 1-1) had trouble stopping Geneva’s post players, particularly 5-foot-10 junior Janie McCloughan.

She led all scorers with 19 points, most coming on back-door cuts to the basket.

“When we really unite as a team and get our passes down, that’s when we’re at our best,” McCloughan said.

“I think we really excelled at that tonight.”

Most of the passes to McCloughan came from the high post and most of those from Santos, who finished with a double-double – 14 points and 10 assists.

“We read the mismatch,” Santos said. “She had someone shorter guarding her and she is so great at the back-door cuts. She’s so quick.

She honestly made the passes easy because she got away from her defender and was wide open. She always does a good job of reaching her hands up and calling for the ball.”

By JARED BIRCHFIELD editorial@kcchronicle.com ELGIN – Free throws did not have much of impact in the first half of Friday night’s Upstate Eight River Conference game between St. Charles North and Larkin boys teams.

The North Stars did not go to the free-throw line in the first 16 minutes of the game while the Royals only sank two.

However, free throws were a major factor when it counted in the fourth quarter. Larkin scored its last 11 points of from the free-throw line to claim a 69-54 win.

Larkin closed the game on a 16-0 run.

“The game definitely slipped away,” said North Stars coach Tom Poulin. “We had them where we wanted them in the first half. I think

our guys got pre-occupied with the foul situation and they let that creep into their heads.”

The game did not start out well for North (5-3, 2-1 UEC River), as starter Erik Miller collided with a Larkin player 30 seconds into the contest and dislocated his shoulder when he fell to the court.

Tyler DeMoss replaced Miller and made an immediate impact on the game, making the first two North Star baskets. The senior scored eight points before fouling out in the fourth quarter.

North led, 13-10, after the first quarter. The North Stars held their biggest lead half way through the second quarter, 19-13, on a Jake Ludwig 3. The junior guard scored a team-high 22 points. Larkin (6-1, 2-0) rallied to tie the game at 27 at the end of the half.

“They wanted it more to-

night than us,” Ludwig said.

“They seemed to get every loose ball.”

With North only trailing by a point, 36-35, late in the third quarter, Larkin’s Kendale McCullum went on a personal 11-6 run to give his team a 47-42 lead at the end of the quarter. The senior led all scorers with 23 points.

“I expect our seniors to come through and finish games,” said Larkin coach

Deryn Carter. “Today, it was Kendale.”

“We knew there would be a run the third quarter,” Poulin said. “I wasn’t pleased with the way we reacted. We reacted as if that was the end of the game and not the third quarter.”

The North Stars reclaimed the lead briefly at the 4:19 mark in the fourth quarter on another Ludwig basket, 5453. McCullum answered with

a 3-point play – a basket and a free throw to put Larkin back on top, 56-54. McCullum scored the last basket on Larkin’s next trip down the court to widen the Royals lead, 58-54. Four different Royals player then went to the freethrow line to score the final points.

Alec Goetz scored 15 points for the North Stars while Taylor Boley scored 12 for the Royals.

do better in the second half,” Peez said. “We just needed to stick to what we know, I guess, and run the offense and trust and buy-in completely.”

The Warriors recaptured the lead early in the fourth quarter on five straight points from Chris Karkazis.

After Peez was called for an offensive foul, Waubonsie Valley’s Nick Karkazis buried a 3 with 3:52 to go that made it 46-40.

The Batavia offense sputtered thereafter, with Pieczynski missing a point-blank lay-in and Canaan Coffey missing the front-end of a one-and-one bonus freethrow attempt.

A Peez 3 with 1:27 to go cut the lead to 48-43 but the Warriors went 5 for 6 from the line down the stretch to ice the game.

Nazos was pleased that the Bulldogs stayed in the game despite turning the ball over 21 times and trying to get Micah Coffey and Tucker Knox acclimated with the team after returning from the football field.

“We’re taking strides defensively; we’re not there yet

but we will just because I’ve seen the strides we’ve taken,” Nazos said. “Once we start getting stronger with the ball and start seeing things offensively, we’re going to get there.”

Waubonsie Valley clamped down on Micah and Canaan Coffey, limiting the sharp-shooters to just one 3-pointer and a combined 10 points on the night. Peez led the Bulldogs with 13 points, 11 of which came in the second half.

“We knew coming in that

they could shoot. We knew coming in that Micah was on a high winning the state title in football and the younger one [Canaan] was the leading scorer coming into the game so we knew we had two brothers to stop,” Waubonsie Valley coach Chaz Taft said.

“Our emphasis was to get on the two Coffey brothers, limit their touches and try to get them to catch the ball high.”

Jay DeHaan led all scorers with 18 points for Waubonsie Valley while Chris Karkazis added 14.

AURORA – Ugly was a perfect way to describe the way the Batavia boys basketball team played in the first half Friday against Waubonsie Valley.

The Warriors jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the opening moments of the quarter, yet Batavia somehow found itself down, 24-19, at the half.

Batavia buttoned things up in the second half, elevating its defensive pressure and briefly taking the lead before eventually falling, 5746. Despite the loss, Batavia coach Jim Nazos can sense that big things are ahead for the Bulldogs.

“I thought things changed about four minutes into the first quarter. The first two minutes, they were the first to the ball and the first through a screen,” Nazos said. “The first quarter on and three minutes into the fourth, we were fighting to catch up and came back. I like us right now and I think we have some mental checkouts at times that we have to

take care of, but I like this team.”

Batavia (2-4) was indeed checked out for the first couple of minutes of the first quarter as Waubonsie Valley (3-4) forced four straight turnovers, not permitting a Bulldogs shot attempt until five minutes into the quarter.

Undeterred, the Bulldogs slowly whittled played their way back into the contest, climbing to within 19-16 on a Canaan Coffey Micah Coffey 3-pointer with 3:52 to go.

Trailing, 24-19, at the break, Batavia used 3-pointers from Tyler Lovestrand, Danny Pieczynski and Chasen Peez to take a 33-30 lead with 3:03 to go in the third quarter.

Peez knocked down another 3 later in the quarter that helped the Bulldogs take a 3836 advantage into the fourth quarter.

Knights’ Carter ready for fresh start at SIU Kyle Carter’s decorated cross country career at Kaneland closed in anticlimactic fashion.

The accomplished runner will have a chance to regroup in track and field season, and then he can give cross country another crack in college. On Thursday, Carter announced his Division I commitment to run next year at Southern Illinois.

SIU stood by Carter after a difficult day last month as the senior struggled – by his high standards – at the IHSA Class 2A boys cross country state meet.

Carter’s senior year was complicated by hurrying back from a stress fracture that hampered his training and kept him out of the lineup in the season’s early stages.

“In some ways I think the pressure of wanting to do so well and hearing what other colleges were talking about, ‘If you run this time, we might have this kind of

money for you,’ was a perfect storm for one crummy day, but that doesn’t spoil what he’s done for his entire cross country career,” Kaneland coach Chad Clarey said.

“He had to work his way back up from missing the first six weeks to being our No. 1 runner [at the end of Kyle Carter year].

“This is something he richly deserves, and we’re very grateful SIU sees some of the great things for him that we see for him.”

Clarey said an SIU coach as well as one of the Salukis’ runners met with Carter after the state meet in Peoria. That meeting made a favorable impression on Carter, who also was considering Division I options such as Iowa State, Illinois State, Western Illinois and Idaho.

“A lot of the same talent he possesses that he’s shown us, particularly with the 800 and mile, they like those opportunities he can bring to that team, and the 400 as well. … It seemed like a very good fit,” Clarey said. “He really liked the coach. It just kind of meshed with what he was looking for.”

As a junior, Carter clocked a 15:22 at the IHSA Class 2A state cross country meet to lead the Knights to a 13th place team finish.

That time was more than a minute faster than Carter ran last month, but Clarey said Carter was not back to full health, and is taking time off now to regroup before jumping in to track and field training.

Warriors retain football coach: Wheaton Academy football coach Brad Thornton had the interim tag removed from his title on Friday after guiding the Warriors to a 4-5 record in his debut season.

The Warriors will transition from the Suburban Christian Conference to the Metro Suburban Conference next year.

A former Wheaton College football player, Thornton was an assistant football coach at Evangelical Christian in

Memphis, Tenn., before being hired as an English teacher and interim football coach at Wheaton Academy in June.

“The school has expressed an earnest commitment and desire to invest in the program and help it take steps towards sustained success,” Thornton said in a news release from the school. “We have already gotten off to a strong start this offseason and have a group of returning players hungry to make the playoffs next year.”

Five Knights finished scoring in double figures as Kaneland cruised to an 83-63 win. A contest that was competitive early saw the Knights earn their first win in Northern Illinois Big 12 East play this season.

“We have a lot of competitors and players that want to be out here and play,” senior John Pruett said.

“Every day in practice, coach says it is the next guy up all of the time. John Pruett Everybody knows their role. Just get out there and do what you do.”

Pruett scored 15 points for Kaneland (3-2, 1-1 NI Big 12 East) and added five rebounds and three assists. Tyler Carlson added to the scoring with 11 points and was one rebound shy of a double-double.

“John, Drew [David] and Tyler are the leaders of our team, but [balanced scoring] has kind of been the trend throughout the year so far. We have multiple people that are scoring,” Knights coach Brian Johnson said. “Everybody is very unselfish. It is nice to keep people involved, and who doesn’t like playing on a team where you are going to get the ball?”

Kaneland led, 39-31, at halftime. The Hubs closed the gap to six on multiple occasions during the second quarter.

But in the second half, the Knights came out firing.

the lead to 51-33. Kaneland pushed the ball off of rebounds and turnovers throughout the game.

“We just constantly practice getting the ball and push,” Pruett said. “We just try to out-run teams. We try to get up the floor as quick as we can to get easy buckets.”

Kaneland forced 15 Rochelle turnovers and outrebounded the Hubs, 34-21.

“We contested shots a little bit better and they tired out,” Johnson said. “They worked really hard on the floor and we capitalized on that.

“You have to make them work on defense, and I thought that if we could get the ball down the floor a little bit, we could tire them out.”

After opening the fourth quarter on an 8-0 run and pushing the lead to 24, the Knights coasted to the victory.

Dylan Vaca finished with 14 points and five rebounds.

Ryan David added 10 points and Ben Barnes was the spark off the bench with a team-high 16 points.

Drew David chipped in with six points and four assists.

Kaneland’s next game will be Tuesday at Hinckley-Big Rock.

“We played well, but there is always room for improvement,” Pruett said. “We are a young team and it is early in the season, but we gave up a lot of points. We just need to tighten up our defense.”

Do you like how you guys were able to deliver a knockout punch early [against Waubonsie]?

It’s different than playing last year. Playing up with the two seniors and the other two that are returners, it’s a lot faster and a higher talent, so I had to catch up with it.

Playing out there like that, it’s so much fun, I love it.

I’m playing with my sister and Liza’s like my sister. I’m playing pretty much with my family, which is awesome. I love it.

What have you taken from each of those two girls’ games, your real sister and your other “sister”?

BATAVIA’S SHEA BAYRAM

Well from my real sister, she has definitely given me a lot of confidence. She’s been making me practice shooting, post moves, and then from Liza, I’m watching her skills with dribbling and getting a lot out of that, and they’re also coaching me as the season goes on. It’s awesome.

I think my role is mostly defense on it because early on, when I started basketball, I always focused on defense because that’s one thing I love about playing. I just love the fact of stopping the main player on the team and having them score less and just saying you accomplished that, is just a good feeling.

This season’s been off to a great start, especially with the win over Geneva. You guys feel pretty good about where things are headed?

Yeah, I think we were really excited after that Geneva win. It boosted our confi-

dence up even more, and we’re just excited to go to Montini and Oswego to play more games and play harder teams, and get us better.

Coach (Kevin) Jensen talked about how he wants you guys to be relentless with that press and not just settle for the first wave, keep coming at teams.

How much does he harp on that, and how good do you think you guys can be in your press?

I think if we work on it more that we’re going to get it down. We’ll probably stop them at half court, and even if we don’t, then we’ll get a steal [at the defensive end]. If we practice it more, I think we’ll get fast and get to where everything is just second nature.

Northern Illinois’ Heisman Trophy finalist was in New York City for the first time Friday.

He got to see Times Square for the first time, meet four of the candidates – Johnny Manziel, Tre Mason, Jordan Lynch Jameis Winston and Andre Williams (AJ McCarron is in Baltimore attending the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award presentation), and had lunch with them before speaking to the media Friday afternoon.

Lynch’s parents – Jim and Sheila, who met him at LaGuardia Airport early Friday morning – were taking everything in as well. It was also their first trip to the Big Apple.

“They’re loving every second of it,” Lynch said before a group of reporters. “Their phones are actually dead right now from taking too many photos.”

After NIU’s 7 p.m. practice Thursday night, Lynch went home to do laundry. He didn’t get too much shut-eye as he had to get up around 3 a.m. for a 6 a.m. flight to New York.

With the situation he was in, the lack of rest didn’t really matter.

“I’m only running on a few hours of sleep,” Lynch said. “This is keeping me awake, it’s kind of surreal.

I’m happy to be here and it’s an honor and a privilege.”

Friday night, Lynch was scheduled to take a tour of the city with his family, and he had hoped to meet some of the previous Heisman winners today.

In a way, he’s sort of the odd man at the event.

Present are players from Florida State and Auburn, the two schools playing for the national title, and McCarron representing Alabama,

winner of three of the past four crystal footballs.

Even Boston College, which boasts RB Andre Williams as a finalist, has had a previous Heisman winner in Doug Flutie.

Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel won the award last year.

Lynch is attempting to become the first player from a non-BCS conference to win the Heisman since Ty Detmer did so back in 1990, although he’s a longshot.

Winston is a heavy favorite to win the award.

Lynch said his Huskie teammates were planning on getting together to watch today’s ceremony, while coach Rod Carey is scheduled to be with Lynch in New York today.

Friday, Lynch enjoyed the experience, but really couldn’t put it in perspective.

“It hasn’t really sunk in yet. I really won’t look back on it until this season’s over with,” he said. “Twenty years down the road, I think it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, especially from the path I took and the journey, being at Northern Illinois, Mid-American Conference. It’s a dream come true.”

Batavia girls basketball sophomore Shea Bayram has slotted in nicely to the starting lineup for the Bulldogs, especially as a key component of the Bulldogs’ defense.

The 5-foot-10 Bayram’s older sister, Erin Bayram, is a 6-2 senior for Batavia and a Division I recruit (Boston University). Shea Bayram said she also maintains a sister-like relationship with close friend and Bulldogs standout Liza Fruendt. Wagner claims 200th career win

A 1992 graduate of Kaneland High School where she was an All-Little Seven Conference selection in basketball, Wagner went on to star for Aurora University.

She was a three-time NCAA Division III All-American, was selected the Northern Illinois Intercollegiate Conference (NIIC) Player of the Year three times, and was named Aurora’s Female Athlete of the Year three times.

The Spartans’ all-time leading scorer with 1,693 points, Wagner’s jersey was retired upon the conclusion of her last game and she was inducted into Aurora’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2009.

In addition to her coaching duties, Wagner works as Waubonsee’s Assistant Athletic Manager.

She also runs Waubonsee’s intramural programs, handles all of the school’s on-campus athletic events and serves as facilities coordinator for the college’s gymnasium, Erickson Hall.

Waubonsee Community College women’s basketball coach Dana Wagner collected her 200th career coaching victory as the Chiefs hung on to defeat the St. Ambrose University junior varsity team, 73-68, Sunday.

Waubonsee improved to 9-3 overall on the season as it won its fourth game in a row.

Sophomore forward Ashley Wilk led the Lady Chiefs in scoring with 17 points.

Center Emma Darby added 14 points, LaDesha Nelson chipped in with 13 and Bailey Klaas scored 12 in the win.

The Chiefs suffered loss to Kishwaukee on Tuesday and Rock Valley on Thursday to fall to 9-5 on the season.

Waubonsee returns to action Wednesday when it faces Indiana Dabney University’s junior varsity squad in a neutral-site contest at Elgin Community College before returning home Jan.

This season is Wagner’s 15th year overall leading Waubonsee’s basketball program. Under her guidance, 22 players have been named to the All-Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) First Team. The Chiefs have finished second in the ISCC three Dana Wagner times during her tenure, including two years ago when they won a school-record 11 straight games.

Wagner also directed Waubonsee’s volleyball program for two seasons and was the softball head coach for 11 years, helping guide the 2007 team to the ISCC title and a record-setting 33win season.

Additionally, Wagner was named the ISCC’s Female Coach of the Year for 2005-06.

Xbox One rates high on son’s wish list ‘Tis the season for gift-giving – and receiving – and my dear son wants the new Xbox One. It retails for a whopping $499. Add tax and insurance, and factor in the absurd reality that it’s completely incompatible with the stack of games he already has for his “old” Xbox gaming system (seriously?), and you’re talking a huge chunk of change.

People still buy cars for less. Ain’t gonna happen. No way, no how.

Besides, didn’t Santa just bring another Xbox a few years ago?

“All of my friends are getting one,” Noah said. Some, he would have me believe, already have.

“Time to get some new friends.”

Yes, I said that. I’m not proud. Or maybe I am. I can’t decide.

The only thing I like about the Xbox he already has is that, while I would prefer the kids do more of that old-fashioned “hanging our together” stuff, at least, with the Xbox, they’re not merely holed-up alone in their boy-caves cuddling plastic controllers.

They’re talking to each other. It could be worse.

As for Xbox’s latest incarnation, though, the communication technology isn’t that great. Early reviews suggest that it reportedly yields “uneven voice control,” among other bugs in the system yet to be sorted out. Well, good. All the more reason to scratch this pricey heap of hardware off my list.

In spite of the bugs, it’s still, apparently, at the top of Noah’s friends’.

And what if they get them? He can’t

very well interact with them in “Xbox world” if they’re on “planet Xbox One,” right? What’s a parent to do?

Sometimes I can’t believe I’m even having these conversations in my head. Classic first-world problem, but still, here it is. A dilemma that must be dealt with, however un-original.

Every generation wrestles with it. In my day, I wanted those trendy Jordache Jeans my friends wore. I ended up wearing the Barbara Moss brand, instead. But I digress.

I know my kid’s friends. I know their parents. I know at least a couple who might also balk at the price, if not the waste. Xbox claims its already sold over 2 million units of the “One” in just its first three weeks on the market, but I can’t believe that all of Noah’s friends’ parents will actually fall in line, too. I took an informal poll. At least one person I know volunteered that she, too, isn’t game. Evil mom that I am, I didn’t stop with my own friends.

“Hey, whatcha think about that

new Xbox?” I asked one of Noah’s, on our way to soccer practice last week.

“My parents said no,” he replied.

Ha, I always knew I liked them. So perhaps Noah won’t be alone in Xbox360-ville? I could tell by his expression in my rear-view mirror that he’s not convinced.

“Hey, if you want it so badly,” I told him later, “remember, you have a job.” He’s a soccer referee. “It’s an awesome exercise in, ‘Is this thing really so valuable to you that you’d be willing to part with your own hardearned cash to get it?’”

It may be. I’m not sure what’s up, but it seems my son may implement a work-around to this conundrum. He’s stopped asking for the Xbox One. Now he just wants cold, hard cash in his stocking. We’ll see what Santa brings.

There’s a gift in here, somewhere.

‘The Lifeguard’: Despite its flaws, the film takes honest look at crisis

Kristen Bell in “The Lifeguard,” a film that is something of a cliche. Still, Bell’s nuanced performance as a woman in early-onset mid-life crisis is good enough to warrant a look.

By MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN The Washington Post I can guess why “The Lifeguard” didn’t get a wide theatrical release this past August. The dramatic tale of Leigh (Kristen Bell), a 29-year-old Associated Press reporter who returns to her small hometown to take up her old lifeguarding job – and an affair with a 16-yearold boy (David Lambert) – is something of a cliche.

Haven’t we seen the dynamic of the woman who finds herself in the arms of a younger man, while attempting to find herself, as recently as last year’s “Hello I Must Be Going”?

(Both films, oddly enough, feature swimming pools

on the poster, an apparent allusion to getting in over your head.) At least in “Hello,” the boy was 19. There’s something creepy about “Lifeguard’s” central – and, yes, abusive – relationship, which would be obvious if the genders were reversed.

Still, Bell’s nuanced performance as a woman in early-onset mid-life crisis is good enough to warrant a look.

And to its credit, the film, written and directed by first-time feature filmmaker Liz W. Garcia, does acknowledge at least some societal censure of the sexual misbehavior, if only in the form of Leigh’s friend Mel (Mamie Gummer), an assistant high-school prin-

cipal. Gummer, the daughter of Meryl Streep, turns in an eminently watchable performance as a woman struggling with her own marriage. As for what to do about her icky best friend, Mel is steadfastly ethical.

More bizarrely, the boy’s father (John Finn) pretty much shrugs off the affair.

That’s probably because his son Jason, by the unexpectedly dark end of the film, has experienced far worse trauma than anything inflicted on him

by Leigh. “The Lifeguard” is a much heavier film than “Hello I Must Be Going” and involves plot elements about homosexuality and suicide.

Still, it’s a measure of

our strange tolerance for female-to-male pedophilia that some of us can look at a relationship like Leigh and Jason’s as more “How Stella Got Her Groove Back” than “Lolita.”

Despite its flaws and blind spots, “The Lifeguard” is not bad at all. It presents a mostly honest appraisal of what it feels like to be so lost that your moral compass doesn’t even work.

• “The Lifeguard” is rated R and contains sex, nudity, drug use, obscenity and smoking. The film is 98 minutes. It is available via Amazon Instant, Google Play, iTunes, Netflix and Vudu.

Religion puts girl at odds with her parents Dear Abby: I’m 16 and come from a devout Roman Catholic family. My parents have taken my brother and me to church every Sunday without fail my entire life. We pray before meals, before school, at bedtime and at other times every day.

My problem is, I have never felt very religious. Since I was 10 I have challenged the teachings of the church and, as I mature into adulthood, I’m beginning to identify as agnostic. When I told my parents, at first they were angry and disappointed. Then they told me I was “just going through a phase.” I know this is more than a phase. It’s a personal belief.

The stress of constantly having to lie to my parents about my faith is tearing me apart to the point that it interferes with my schoolwork and social life. How can I convince them that this isn’t a phase, and that I’m not the Catholic girl they want me to be? – Agnostic In Stockton, Calif.

A living will speaks for you when you can’t Dear Doctor K: I’m drawing up a living will, but I don’t understand many of the medical terms I’m encountering. Can you help?

Dear Reader: Many people, certainly including me, have asked themselves how they would want to be cared for if they became very sick and unable to speak for themselves. The two most common ways of doing that are to designate one trusted person, such as your spouse, who knows your wishes to make decisions for you – a health care proxy. Another is for you to write a living will.

In a living will, you specify how you want to be cared for. Living wills can be the sole way you make your wishes clear to the doctors who someday may be in charge of your care. It also can be a guideline for someone who is your health care proxy.

A living will is used to determine how aggressive you would like your medical treatments to be as the end of life nears. I’ll explain several terms that you probably are seeing in a draft living will. As you read, think about whether you would, or would not, want certain procedures or care.

• Artificial nutrition. When you are unable to swallow anything by mouth, nutrients and fluids

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff can be supplied through a tube inserted through your nose into your stomach. Such a tube can’t be left in long-term (beyond a few weeks). For longer-term use, a tube can be inserted directly into your stomach. That requires a minor surgical procedure. Also for longer-term use, a tube called a catheter can be placed into one of your veins if your gut isn’t working properly.

• Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and advanced cardiac life support. If your heart or breathing stops, CPR can be used to try to resuscitate you. CPR is a combination of chest compressions, artificial respiration and defibrillation. In artificial respiration, air is squeezed through a mask placed over your mouth and nose to move air in and out of your lungs. Defibrillation delivers an electric shock to your body.

This can restart your heart if it has stopped beating. The next step is advanced cardiac life support, including mechanical ventilation.

• Mechanical ventilation. A

ventilator or respirator pushes air into your lungs if you cannot breathe on your own. A tube attached to the machine is inserted into your nose, mouth or neck (through a small surgical procedure). However the tube enters your body, it is passed down into the trachea (windpipe). Mechanical ventilation can be used shortterm as a bridge to recovery, or long-term.

• Organ-sustaining treatment.

This is a set of drugs, medical procedures and machines that can keep you alive for an indefinite period of time. Mechanical ventilation is one common example. Another is kidney dialysis, a machine that cleans toxins out of your blood when your kidneys cannot do the job. Such treatments cannot cure a terminal condition.

I’m like most people. I didn’t exactly look forward to drawing up a will or a living will. But I saw the burden that not having done so caused the families of my friends and patients. That convinced me to do it.

Daughter needs tips to improve grades Dr. Wallace: My daughter is in her first year at a private parochial high school. She has above average intelligence, but all through public intermediate school her grades were below average. She is really trying, but she admits her study habits are not good. Any suggestions will be deeply appreciated. She wants good grades! – Mother, Boston, Mass.

Mother: Although successful study habits don’t come naturally, there are some valuable tried-and-true study techniques that most teens can learn quite easily. I suggest you review these with her: • Taking an active approach to studying is the best beginning – just reading the assignment isn’t enough! Writing causes “muscle memory.” According to the book “Study Smarts,” the muscles in your hand actually “memorize” what you have written.

So while you read, jot down relevant topics and key phrases. But remember, if a sentence says, “There are three primary colors: blue, red and yellow,” don’t write down the name of the colors alone – you won’t remember anything later on. It would help to also name something that is that color.

• Concentration is the key. When you study, concentrate for a block of time. Read or study for 50 minutes at a stretch; memorize for 30 minutes.

You use time better when you limit it.

• Did you know that your brain works best during the day? One hour of daylight studying equals one and a half hours at night.

• Also, alternate the kinds of subjects you study. For instance, don’t study science formulas after algebra; they’re too much alike. Study

’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace French conjugations instead and you’ll learn both topics better. After each study session, have someone quiz you – it makes you actively remember what you have learned.

• However, even the best of study techniques can’t always help a teen concentrate on French conjugations or trigonometric functions. But, taking a well-deserved and refreshing study break can revive concentration when those eyelids start to droop.

• A cool shower offers a stimulating study break. Although a warm shower or bath usually relaxes you, a cool shower can be incredibly invigorating for even the most tired, study-clogged brain. Or briefly watch your favorite TV show.

• Concentration requires a lot of energy, and a good way to get your second wind is to eat a piece of fruit.

Fruit contains fructose, a form of sugar that is believed to provide quick energy. Exercise can also provide a much-needed lift. Exercises such as jumping rope or lifting weights get your blood circulating and boost your energy level by reminding your brain that you are, indeed, awake.

Teachers are eager for students to learn and will assist in every way they can. Meet with a teacher if the time ever comes when you need assistance.

I’m glad that your daughter wants to earn good grades because by developing good study habits, she will succeed.

At the bridge table, we make a lot of mistakes. But with luck, as we gain experience, we make fewer of them. This week, we have been handling the trump suit. Here is one last example – let’s get it right!

West leads the diamond king against six spades. How should declarer plan the play?

The South hand is very honorable, with, in Chicago and rubber-bridge scoring, 150 in aces and 150 in spades. It also has 11 winners. Can partner produce an extra trick or two?

In this auction, South’s jump to three spades showed a solid suit, set that suit as trumps, and asked partner if he had anything. North’s raise to four spades denied an ace or a king. South’s leap to six spades was understandable, although risky with those two losing diamonds.

South must discard one diamond from the dummy on his third top heart and ruff his last diamond in the dummy.

He wins with his diamond ace, cashes the three top hearts, and exits with a diamond. He takes the next trick and ruffs his last diamond with dummy’s spade eight, so there’s no risk of an overruff. Then he draws trumps and claims.

Finally, note that this is one deal in which the very bad trump split was lucky. If West had been able to lead a trump, and the defender who took the diamond trick could have led another trump, the slam would have failed.
