am once again a gym rat, as high school basketball and wrestling are now in full swing.

I had forgotten how fast-paced a boys basketball game could be, especially when it’s between two

rival teams like St. Francis and Wheaton Academy.

Skogsberg met with community members on Thurs-

day afternoon in the Kaneland High School library. On Wednesday, the other finalist – Todd Leden – was at a similar meeting. As with Leden’s meeting, Skogsberg’s session featured questions that audience members wrote on index cards. School board member Veronica Bruhl read the questions and moderated the event.

A new superintendent is scheduled to be announced at Monday’s school board meeting at Harter Middle School in Sugar Grove.

Skogsberg talked of his experiences, including a back-

ground as a teacher. He added that he also still is in the classroom as an instructor at Aurora University. He said he knows five languages – English, sign language, Spanish, Swedish and Hungarian.

He said he was impressed with the Kaneland district, adding “a lot of what’s happening now is really good.”

He said he was not a micro-managing type, and it is important to trust those in charge at each building.

Asked how he could increase communication, he said he always aims to have people say that he communicates too much, rather than not enough.

He said school districts in general are facing great financial challenges because

of funding issues. He said the idea will be to prioritize where the district is going and what is best for the students while at the same time, weighing that with being good stewards of taxpayers’ money.

One question addressed special education. Skogsberg said he appreciated that. He said he overcame challenges himself.

“I was a kid in special ed,” he said. “Look at me now.”

He said he had been in his current position for more than two years.

He said Taft School District 90 is a one-school, gradeschool district that feeds into Lockport High School. He previously was the principal at Minooka Junior High

Batavia School District 101 moving ahead on maintenance facility

by April, according to district officials.

Pat Browne, the district’s director of buildings and grounds, updated school board members about the project at Thursday’s school board finance committee meeting. Some residents had criticized a decision by the board in September to lease a building at 804 Main St. owned by former school board president Ron Link for its new maintenance facility.

The district is leasing the building to replace Batavia High School’s aging maintenance building. Browne told school board members that plans call for making the new facility ready for potential occupancy by April 1.

However, Browne said that date is not cast in stone.

“It might be tricky,” Browne said. “There are items that need to be done that are weather dependent, such as weather proofing.”

During a health and life-safety inspection of the district’s 48-year-old maintenance shop in September 2013, the school district was cited for a number of violations and was told that immediate cor-

rections needed to be made, including the installation of a sprinkler and fire alarm system, and to cover the foam insulation installed on the underside of the roof deck.

Browne said the district

looked at several properties, but that Link’s building was the best suited for the district.

He said the current maintenance building is at the end of its useful life expectancy.

According to the Athena Sus-

tainable Materials Institute, the expected service life of that building is 51.6 years.

Browne said it would cost about $400,000 to remodel the building for the district’s needs.

SEEING FRESH FACES Principal turnover common at schools in, near Tri-Cities

asloboda@shawmedia.com Jarrod Buxton, who spent 10 years teaching sixth-grade language arts at Haines Middle School in St. Charles, wasn’t necessarily looking for a job change.

“I definitely was not running out of the classroom,” the 34-year-old said. “I absolutely loved what I was doing.”

But the last three principals he worked for encouraged him to go the principal route, he said, and their prodding paid off. He pursued the necessary degree and is in the midst of his first year as principal at Lincoln Elementary School.

“I love it,” Buxton said. “I love the interaction I get to have with students.”

Many schools in and near the Tri-Cities have gotten new leaders in recent years. According to the Illinois Report Card, 27 of the 40 schools in the Batavia, Geneva, Kaneland and St. Charles districts have had more than one principal in the past six years.

“At the elementary level, almost every building but two have changed principals since I’ve been here,” said Becky McCabe, area assistant superintendent for elementary education in St. Charles. She is in her sixth year with the district.

In some cases, the districts’ principal turnover resulted from retirements. In the past five years, district officials said, St. Charles School District 303 has had seven principals retire, and Batavia Public School District 101 has had one such retirement. The districts each will have a principal retire at the end of the year, they said.

When a principal retires, McCabe said, schools not only lose some history but also experience and relationships that have been built with families and teachers.

“You lose that comfort of, I know who that person is,” she

said.

Steve Pearce, assistant superintendent of human resources in Batavia, said firstyear principals also have their advantages. For example, he said, they don’t come in with preconceived notions, and they provide a fresh perspective that allows them to ask a lot of questions that could lead to improvements.

But, he added, they also

can be a “big risk” to districts because the stakeholders – teachers, community members – often want their principal to have experience. He said those candidates can be difficult to get.

“A lot of the best principals, they’re not looking to leave where they’re at,” Pearce said, noting they are typically very committed to their school, loyal to their staff and deeply care

about the vision the school board and superintendent has set forth for them.

In the early 2000s, there was a nationwide concern about having to replace experienced principals. According to a 2002 position statement adopted by the National Association of Secondary School Principals Board of Directors, it was estimated 40 percent of principals would retire in the next decade.

“School districts nationwide report principal vacancies and a serious lack of qualified applicants to replace them,” according to the statement.

Pearce has experienced otherwise, citing recent interviews for the principal position at Rotolo Middle School.

“We have not seen a huge impact,” he said. “It was a good candidate pool.”

But he and Craig Collins, the assistant superintendent for human resources at Geneva School District 304, said

there’s a new concern facing Illinois districts: the changes in requirements for becoming a principal.

“Essentially starting last year, principals now must complete a program that is far more rigorous than what prior programs were,” Collins said.

He said the new requirements in and of themselves aren’t necessarily bad, but he is concerned the relatively small candidate pool for principals will become even smaller during the next five to 10 years.

“My worry is that we’ve taken it too far,” Collins said, “and we’ve provided a disincentive for individuals to pursue an interest in school leadership.”

Meanwhile, Buxton – the first-year principal in St. Charles – is learning that every day in his new role is truly different.

But whatever his responsibilities for the day are, he said he tries to be among the students for at least an hour. His goal is to be a positive influence for them, he said, noting he doesn’t want to be thought of as a disciplinarian.

And whatever he does accomplish one day, he knows more will be waiting for him the next.

“Never will I leave a day feeling like my work is done,” Buxton said.

The Illinois Appellate Court has ruled that Alia Bernard – sentenced in a 2009 crash that killed a St. Charles couple – can file a new motion to withdraw her guilty plea.

She had been sentenced to seven years in prison. It later was reduced to six years, but the appellate court ruled that the case return to trial court as it existed when Bernard initially was sentenced to seven years in February 2012.

In making its ruling on Wednesday, the court overruled previous decisions den y i n g t w o Alia Bernard attempts by Bernard to withdraw her guilty plea. Bernard was sentenced in February 2012 after she pleaded guilty to two counts of felony aggravated driving under the influence in a crash that killed Wade Thomas, 44, of St. Charles and his wife, Denise Thomas, 45, his passenger.

Kane County Judge Karen Simpson, who since has retired, last year rejected a motion by Bernard to withdraw her guilty plea. Associate Judge Allen Anderson,

who also since has retired, in August 2012 upheld the plea, but he did reduce Bernard’s sentence from seven years in prison to six after her attorney filed a motion to reconsider her sentence.

“Defendant shall be granted reasonable time in which to file a new motion to withdraw the guilty plea and/or reconsider the sentence, if counsel concludes that a new motion is necessary,” the ruling stated.

The crash occurred about 8:20 a.m. May 23, 2009, at the intersection of Route 47 and Smith Road in Blackberry Township, south of Elburn.

A vehicle in the southbound lane on Route 47 stopped to turn left onto Smith Road, followed by two more vehicles, waiting for several motorcycles to pass.

The motorcycles were heading north.

Bernard was driving a 1999 Toyota Solara, which hit the last stopped vehicle in the rear. The collision created a chain reaction that pushed the first vehicle into the path of the oncoming motorcycles, killing the couple. In all, the crash involved three cars and six motorcycles.

Aggravated DUI means a death or injury occurred and increases the penalty to six to 28 years in prison. Toxicology tests showed Bernard had marijuana in her system at the time of the crash. Bernard’s attorney at the time, Bruce Brandwein, said Bernard consumed marijuana several days earlier but was not impaired at the time of the crash.

St. Charles attorney: McIlvaine’s project ‘98 percent done’ St. Charles resident Clifford McIlvaine is nearing completion on his decades-long improvement project.

St. Charles city attorney Phillip Luetkehans said he inspected McIlvaine’s property, at 605 Prairie St., on Thursday morning with city officials.

“It is 98 percent done,” Luetkehans said, after a hearing Thursday on the case. “There are a few items that we are asking him to screen. We’re getting closer. We’re glad that Mr. McIlvaine is trying to comply with code.”

McIlvaine has agreed to screen the items, Luetkehans said. The next hearing on the

case is set for Jan. 28.

Kane County Judge David Akemann last year allowed the city of St. Charles to proceed with repairing McIlvaine’s property, including correcting an unfinished roof.

The city had sued McIlvaine in 2010, pushing him to finish an improvement project that was started Clifford more than 30 McIlvaine years ago. A work schedule later was agreed upon in court.

In court last month, McIlvaine signed a three-page agreement requiring him to

This year’s event will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home, which is at 100 S. Third St. in St. Charles. It is described as “a forum for commemorating loved ones during the holidays.” Moss, the owner of the funeral home, as well as the Moss Family Funeral Home in Batavia, said many have embraced the event. One year, he said, more than 20 members of a family attended the event.

“It is such a powerful service,” Moss said.

An updated concept plan for Lexington Club includes 112 single-family homes on 112 lots, with an average lot size of 4,823 square feet. Lexington Vice President Bill Rotolo presented the plan Monday to the Planning and Development Committee for its members’ feedback.

The initial plan, approved in January 2013 over objections from residents, called for 102 town homes and 28 single-family homes on a 27.3-acre former industrial site, according to the city’s executive summary of the document.

The plan is being changed to better meet the demands of current homebuyers, according to paperwork related to the plan.

“The homes are designed in both plan and elevation to be better, not bigger,” states an unsigned document in the application from Palatine-based BSB Design.

St. Charles aldermen said

the latest concept plan is an improvement from the 2013 plan for the site, which is located between North 5th and 12th streets and bordered by the Chicago and N.W. Railroad to the north and State and Dean streets to the south.

The number of town houses was one of several concerns residents had about the original plan, Ward 1 Alderman Ron Silkaitis said on Thursday.

Silkaitis said he noted during the meeting Monday that the developer plans to seek a few variances for the updated concept plan.

“I think if they lowered the density, a lot of those other items will take care of themselves,” Silkaitis said. “We’ll see what they come back with next year after they revise it.”

Should the developer continue with this concept plan, map and planned unit development amendments will need to be approved by the St. Charles City Council, as well as a preliminary plan and final plat.

Any submitted amendments and plats will first go before the city’s Plan Commission, said Ellen Johnson, a planner in the city’s Planning Division.

Nominating papers will be accepted from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays through Dec. 22. The documents should be submitted to the local election official’s office in Room B235 of Building B at 1700 Spartan Drive in Elgin. Petitions may be filed in person or by mail.

If needed, a lottery for simultaneous, 8 a.m. first-day filings will be held Dec. 23.

Aging of boomers make end-of-life issues urgent THE WASHINGTON POST In September, the Institute of Medicine started what it hoped would become a national conversation on how well we’re prepared for dying.

It published a 500-page report, “Dying in America: Improving Quality and Honoring Individual Preferences Near the End of Life,” which found that neither individuals nor the health care system are at all ready for the inevitable.

The Post’s Jason Millman wrote that the report “outlined comprehensive recommendations for tackling an issue that’s only getting more pressing as 10,000 baby boomers join Medicare every day.”

Those recommendations included educating Americans to begin thinking about the end of life early on, along with suggestions for improving access to hospice care and training more doctors in palliative care.

On Tuesday, in an effort to prompt discussion, the Annals of Internal Medicine published four commentaries touching on the issues raised in the report.

Below are excerpts from two.

From “Can the United States Buy Better Advance Care Planning?” by University of Pennsylvania professors Scott D. Halpern and Ezekiel J. Emanuel: “Despite nearly 30 years of effort to get persons in the United States to complete advance directives, a recent trial of patients most likely to benefit from them – those with unequivocally terminal illnesses and limited life expectan-

cies – showed that only one half had completed one. Many persons in the United States still spend time in the last six months of life (and often die) in intensive care units. Too many patients in the last days of life receive aggressive treatments, including surgery, and too few have adequate symptom control.

And more than 25 percent of Medicare dollars are still allocated to care for patients in their final year of life – a proportion that has not changed in decades.”

For too many of these immensely vulnerable patients and their families, the trauma inherent in having a loved one become critically ill and die is compounded, rather than alleviated, by a system that is ill-prepared to provide clinically sound patient- and family-centered care. In addition to causing physical and emotional suffering, this failure contributes to soaring health-care costs that put enormous strain on families and our economy.”

take corrective action when issues involving improprieties and failure to follow the law come to my attention. Doing what is “politically” correct and keeping the peace to prevent attacks on my reputation in an effort to get re-elected in April 2015 or walking away quietly to preserve a legacy is the wrong thing to do right now.

Watching elected officials and management employees take action and shortcuts to benefit themselves personally, rather than taking their fiduciary responsibility seriously and

acting accordingly, is discouraging and demands a response from me. I understand that no one likes to get called on the carpet, and unfortunately during this time of my tenure, holding people accountable is called for.

After everything comes to light in the next few weeks, I think a prudent person would say that it took a lot of guts for President Smith to take action and persevere.

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – The St. Charles East boys basketball team spent minimal time in the locker room Thursday against Batavia, returning to the floor to see plenty of the pee wee game unfolding as halftime entertainment.

Nothing against the visiting locker room in Batavia. The Saints just didn’t have a whole lot to correct.

Riding a tremendous firsthalf showing, the Saints clobbered the Bulldogs, 76-57, to continue their blistering start in Upstate Eight Conference River Division play.

“We didn’t make that many adjustments,” East senior for-

ward Mick Vyzral said. “We just wanted to come out and do the same thing, keep the pressure on.”

East led, 22-6, by the end of the first quarter – despite no points in the quarter from standout senior Cole Gentry – and built its advantage to as many as 24 points before settling for a 40-21 halftime lead.

The surging Saints (6-1, 3-0 UEC River) can now turn their attention to Saturday’s showdown with unbeaten Geneva. All 12 Saints who played Thursday scored, led by Vyzral (14 points), Jake Asquini (12 on four 3-pointers) and Evan DiLeonardi (11).

“We have a lot of different weapons and I think we’re doing a good job of meshing those

together because it makes it that much harder to guard,” East coach Pat Woods said.

The Saints were 15 for 22 from the floor in the first half, with DiLeonardi showcasing mounting confidence attacking the rim. He made 5 of his 6 field goal attempts in the half.

“The thing with Evan that everyone forgets is he was playing soccer for six months, so as good of an athlete as he is, you can’t just step onto the basketball court and start scoring points,” Woods said. “The more comfortable he gets, the more of a weapon he’s going to be.”

Batavia (4-3, 0-3 UEC River) has lost three straight after opening its season with four victories at the Windmill City

Classic. Bulldogs coach Jim Nazos always emphasizes defense but the Bulldogs weren’t able to account for East’s myriad scorers.

“They do a really good job at what they do,” Nazos said.

“There’s not just one weapon, there’s six or seven. They’re a good team. They don’t miss open guys and they don’t miss open shots. We have to make sure what they do is contested a little bit more and it’s got to be a little bit more of a harder look.”

Senior forward Chasen Peez led Batavia with 16 points and reserve guard Brett Bowman added 10.

The Bulldogs limited Gentry to eight points but Gentry and the rest of East’s starters

yielded extended playing time to a productive bench, which was paced by Jake Clodi (nine points).

East forward James McQuillan – a starter to begin the season – missed his fourth straight game after suffering a concussion but warmed up with the team and has been cleared to return to action, Woods said.

The Saints might need their whole arsenal Saturday against the unbeaten Vikings.

“I’m very excited because we’re ranked and they’re ranked,” Vyzral said. “The hype is there. They’re big.

We’ve got to rebound. I think if we just keep playing the way we’re playing and come out with energy, I think we’ll be alright.”

“It’s kind of one of those things where when you’re trying to become the best team in the country, you’re just going to have those kids that are going to have to wait their turn for their time to step in that lineup and shine,” Cadets co-coach Donny Reynolds said.

While Marmion’s junior class – including Trace Carello, Matt Ferraro, Nathan Traxler and Lucas Warren – provides the team’s core, several freshmen emerged from the start of practices last month.

It starts at the top of the lineup, where Sean McKenna and Matt Ortiz look to be threats.

“They’re going to have to win some key matches at some key times, and I think they’re ready for it,” Reynolds said.

Any victories this weekend figure to be especially gratifying. Today and Saturday, the Cadets will compete at the Walsh Jesuit Ironman Tournament in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, an event Marmion co-coach Ryan Cumbee has called the best high school tournament in the nation.

Frazier, Rahn earn academic award: The National Football Foundation has selected Batavia senior Noah Frazier

as one of three Chicago-area recipients of its Scholar-Athlete Award.

Frazier’s recognition also includes a $5,000 scholarship.

Ranked first in his class of 506 with a 4.375 grade-point average, Frazier helped the Bulldogs to a fourth straight UEC River title in 2014 as a fullback/defensive end. Frazier participates in a number of other extracurriculars, including wrestling, National Honor Society and English National Honor Society. He’s the president of Batavia’s Student Athletic Board and vice president of its National Spanish Honor Society.

He also volunteer coaches for Batavia Youth Football and Batavia Pinners Youth Wrestling and is active in his church.

Frazier will be honored as part of an annual awards ceremony, set for Feb. 16 at the Bears’ Halas Hall. He’ll be joined by Aurora Central Catholic senior quarterback/ cornerback Matt Rahn, a product of Kaneland Harter Middle School in Sugar Grove, who also received the award.

Gatorade honors Haggerty: Molly Haggerty already has two “Gs” in her surname, so why not another prominent

one for her mantel?

Gatorade on Thursday recognized the St. Francis junior outside hitter as its 2014-15 Illinois Volleyball Player of the Year, the first Spartan to earn the award in its 30-year existence.

A Nebraska recruit, Haggerty helped the Spartans to a 38-4 record and a third consecutive IHSA Class 3A state title in November. She contributed 381 kills, 152 digs, 53 blocks and 20 service points to the title season. Haggerty also carries a 3.31 grade-point average and is active in volunteer work.

Batavia wrestling coach Scott Bayer planned to devote much of this week’s pre- and post-practice addresses to the concept of unlocking potential.

The Bulldogs know there’s an opportunity to follow through when they visit twotime defending Upstate Eight Conference River Division champ St. Charles East tonight.

So why shy from the issue?

The Saints also have captured the past two UEC tournament championships, and return several key members from last season’s team.

“It’s going to come down to who scores the most bonus points and who gets the most falls and [major decisions] and [technical falls] and things,” Bayer said. “I’m hoping that we’ve got the firepower to get that done, you know. I think they certainly do. They lost a couple guys [to graduation], but they’ve got some good guys in their lineup. There’s a couple guys in their lineup that have beat our guys before, you know, so hopefully, we’ve gotten better and hopefully we match up with them.

“I definitely think we’re going to be competitive. We’re going to be going to their place.

It should be a pretty fun atmosphere. I know a bunch of kids from Batavia are going. It’ll be good for both our programs to put it on the line. I’m excited about it.”

East, which returns Class 3A state qualifying senior Keone Derain at 152 pounds, opened the conference season with a comfortable victory against Geneva. The Saints rolled, 42-23, on the road last month.

“Yeah, they’re a tough team, but we’re really, really excited to get after them,” Bulldogs sophomore 126-pounder Seth Winkle said. “They’re tough where we’re tough, and I think we match up well against them.”

Charles North boys basketball team snapped a threegame losing streak Thursday night with a 79-29 thrashing of Streamwood in an Upstate Eight Conference River game.

The North Stars scored the first point of the game 20 seconds into the first quarter on a Griffin Hammer free throw and never relinquished the lead.

“We asked the guys to play harder than they ever have.

We felt like we’ve left some possessions out there in previous games and we haven’t played 32 minutes of basketball,” said North Stars coach Tom Poulin about the lopsided win. “Defensively, we worked a lot since the St. Pats game on our defense and we spent a lot of time on executing offense. I thought we executed well. We gave everything we had every second on the court.”

The North Stars (3-4, 1-1 UEC River) led, 18-5, at the end of the first quarter and 32-11 at halftime. The Sabres, who were playing without three of their starters, were limited to three baskets in the first half.

“Missing three starters isn’t

helping our cause,” said Sabres coach Paul Kowalyszyn.

“St. Charles is a good team and they are well coached. They targeted our weaknesses, ball handling and in guard play.”

Streamwood’s shooting woes continued into the third quarter, where it made only two baskets.

North widened their lead to 59-19 at the end of the quarter.

Starter Jake Ludwig and reserve Armon Osborne led the North Stars’ scoring with 15 points apiece.

Ludwig scored 10 of points in the first half. Osborne did most of his scoring in the second half – scoring 13 points in the final sixteen minutes including three 3-pointers.

Jack Callaghan chipped in 12 points for North while teammates Hammer and Mikey Schroeder contribute eight each.

Marton was the top Streamwood scorer with 11 points.

North hopes to get to the .500 mark Saturday when it hosts UEC River rival Elgin.

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE WEST CHICAGO – Rob Olsen rolled the St. Charles East boys bowling team’s high series in Thursday’s 3,305-3,018 dual win against visiting Larkin.

On Tuesday, when the Saints scored a breakthrough 3,493 against DeKalb in another victory at Bowling Green, Olsen was elsewhere in the pecking order.

East isn’t complaining.

“Every single time, it’s a new name or it’s two to three or four or all five guys dominating,” Saints coach Steve Dessauer said.

The Saints held off the Royals behind their depth after Olsen’s 745 series. Cole Cartee (646) and Dean Mudlong (639) also contributed.

“We’re killing it,” Dessauer said. “But props to Larkin.

Their program is doing really well.”

Shelby is the leading scorer so far this season for the 5-0 Central Lady Rockets.

She is averaging 13 points a game, while shooting over 36% from 3 point range, and has over a 2:1 assist to turnover ratio.

Bailey Crimmins helped lead the Knights to the IC Thanksgiving Championship. Crimmins, a 6’2” junior post player, averaged 10.8 points and 5.8 rebounds per game while shooting 50% from the field.

In the six games so far this season, Hannah has scored 30 or more points three times. She is currently averaging 26.8 points per game and 12.8 rebounds this season.

“We’ve been playing really well as a team,” senior wing Abby Novak said.

“We’ve been taking advantage of each other’s strengths and realizing each other’s weaknesses and not putting them in position to do that. So that’s really been our big thing, is us playing as a team.”

Make no mistake, the Vikings haven’t cruised in each of their victories since a breezy start to last month’s Glenbard East Rachel Bach Tournament.

The Vikings only were scheduled for weekend action this week, hosting West Chicago today before visiting St. Charles East on Saturday, which gave McCloughan time to heal while providing newcomers the chance to jell in practice.

Freshman guard Margaret Whitley has emerged quickly, scoring 14 points at North and 20 in Saturday’s 56-46 win at Batavia.

“Everyone’s definitely been really welcoming,” Whitley said. “It’s made it a lot easier, coming into a high school and playing varsity basketball with people that are really making it a lot easier. I really enjoy playing with them.”

club to host annual holiday luncheon KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE neighbors@kcchronicle.com ELGIN – The Fox Valley Newcomers and Neighbors club will host its holiday luncheon Wednesday, Dec. 17, at the Elgin Country Club, 2572 Weld Road, Elgin.

The event will begin at 11:30 a.m. with a meet-and-greet, followed by a noon luncheon and presentation. The featured speaker, Pam Schutt, will share holiday fashion ideas using a variety of accessories. Schutt will teach attendees how to get a new look using jewelry, scarves, belts and more.

The luncheon menu will include a winter salad of mixed

greens and assorted rolls; and a choice of roasted pork loin, salmon with dill sauce or seasonal roasted vegetables; followed by a dessert of peppermint ice cream with a chocolate truffle. Lunch will be served with lemonade, tea or coffee.

Following lunch, there will be a 50/50 raffle with funds going toward the Anderson Animal Shelter in South Elgin.

To learn more about what it means to volunteer, Fox Valley Jewish School, a school associated with the Fox Valley Jewish Neighbors group in Geneva, is helping the homeless in the community.

Students made 15 sack lunches – just a portion of what’s needed – Dec. 7 for St. Charlesbased Lazarus House, a shelter for people in need in the Tri-Cities.

Parent Laura Steele delivered the lunches to Lazarus House that same day, and adult guests of Lazarus took the lunches to work the next day, according to a news release.

“The pre-K through grade two kids decorated paper lunch sacks with stickers and drawings and then filled each of them with a hearty meat and cheese sandwich, an apple, a can of seltzer water [and] a small bag of cheese popcorn,” said project coordinator Amanda Littauer, in the release.

In addition to the lunches, students made table decorations for the shelter’s upcoming Christmas meal.

“All of the kids went outside on a walk to collect twigs and other natural items for use in the holiday centerpieces,” Littauer said in the release. “The grade-three-and-up kids made centerpieces from cinnamon-scented pinecones – the natural items that the kids collected – and various craft materials.”

Students at Fox Valley Jewish School focus on helping a different local nonprofit each year.

In past years, the school has worked with Field of Dreams in Batavia and the Fox Valley Wildlife Center in Elburn.

The program provides a general Jewish education and does not adhere to any one particular branch of Judaism.

Preventing sleep apnea also will help your heart Dear Doctor K: At my last checkup, my doctor asked if I snore. When I told the doctor that my husband says I snore a lot, the doctor said snoring can be a sign of heart disease, particularly in postmenopausal women. What does snoring have to do with heart disease?

Dear Reader: Snoring is not a sign of heart disease, but it can be a sign of sleep apnea. And people with sleep apnea are at greater risk for heart disease.

Sleep apnea is a condition that causes brief, repeated pauses in breathing throughout the night.

A woman’s risk of sleep apnea rises after menopause. That’s when levels of the hormone progesterone (which increases the number of breaths per minute) decline. In addition to affecting your slumber, sleep apnea can threaten your heart health.

My colleague Dr. Lawrence Epstein is associate medical director for the Sleep Clinic at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He explains that sleep apnea is a risk factor for high blood pressure, which raises the risk of both heart attacks and strokes. Sleep apnea also is more common in people who are obese. And obesity is itself a risk factor for heart

So, that’s why your doctor asked about snoring. If you have sleep apnea, you may be at higher risk for heart disease.

Snoring is just one sign of sleep apnea. Other signs include daytime drowsiness, morning headaches or mood changes.

If your doctor suspects sleep apnea, he or she may refer you for a sleep study. This test can confirm or rule it out.

The gold standard treatment for sleep apnea is continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP).

CPAP blows air into the airways to keep them open at night. It is nearly 100 percent effective at treating sleep apnea, and it improves blood pressure in people with sleep apnea who have heart disease.

But here’s the catch with CPAP: You have to use it. Some people find CPAP uncomfortable at night and don’t use it as prescribed.

There are other options. For example, an oral appliance, which looks like a mouth guard

or retainer, can help prevent your tongue from falling back and blocking the airway while you sleep. For many people who find CPAP uncomfortable, this is a pretty good option.

If you do have sleep apnea, try some lifestyle changes. They may reduce your apnea episodes enough to avoid the need for treatment.

• Turn over. In some people, apnea occurs only when they’re on their back. If that’s true for you, buy a body pillow to keep you on your side.

• Avoid alcohol. Alcohol is a muscle relaxant. It can slacken the tissues of your throat while you sleep.

• Stop smoking. Cigarette smoking causes the upper airway to swell.

• Lose weight. One of the best ways to prevent – or eliminate – sleep apnea is to shed extra pounds.

These changes not only can improve your sleep apnea, they also may reduce your risk of heart trouble and strokes.

Mom still cooks for husband Dr. Wallace: Ken and I have been married for six months and I’ve got a problem. Everything in our marriage is perfect except for one thing. Every day after work, Ken stops by to see his mother and about half the time she coaxes him to stay for dinner because she “just happens to have one of his favorite dinners in the oven.”

I’ll admit I’m not the best cook, but I’m learning. Last night, I prepared my first meatloaf, but when Ken came home, he told me that he already ate at his mother’s and had meatloaf.

There’s nothing like making a comment push-button finger in cheek. However, at the bridge table, push the opponents around as much as you can. They will feel uncomfortable and make more mistakes.

In today’s deal, look at the West hand. North opened one diamond, East overcalled one heart and South responded one spade. (This guaranteed at least a five-card suit; he would have made a negative double with only four spades.)

What should West have done?

I agree with North’s opening bid. A good six-card suit and two aces make that hand too strong for a weak two-bid. (If South has, say, the diamond king, heart ace and club king, three no-trump will be a strong favorite. With a good long minor, always think “three no-trump.”)

West knew of at least a 10-card heart fit, so jumped to four hearts, the 10-trick level. Then after two passes, what should South have done? (Yes, maybe East should have bid five hearts!)

South liked his hand for offense, so understandably rebid five clubs. North corrected to five spades, and all passed. (Agreed, East might have sacrificed in six hearts doubled, which would have cost only 300.)

Five spades would have failed if West had guessed to lead a club, but why would he have done that?

After the heart-ace start, South ruffed, drew two rounds of trumps and ran the diamond jack. Declarer was able to discard four clubs from his hand on dummy’s long diamonds.

WHEREAS, the Board of Trustees of the Burlington Community Fire Protection District, Kane and DeKalb Counties, Illinois, caused to be prepared in tentative form a Budget and Appropriations Ordinance, and the Secretary of this Board has made the same conveniently available for public inspection for at least thirty (30) days prior to final action thereon; and WHEREAS, a public hearing was held as to such ordinance on the 20th day of November, 2014, and Notice of said hearing was given at least thirty (30) days prior thereto as required by law, and the Board having met all other applicable legal requirements.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED by the Board of Trustees of the Burlington Community Fire Protection District, Kane and DeKalb Counties, Illinois, as follows: Section 1. That the fiscal year of this Fire Protection District began on June 1, 2014, and will end on May 31, 2015.

The foregoing appropriations are appropriated from the above revenue sources including proceeds of a special Section 2. That the following Budget and Appropriations Ordinance containing an estimate of the revenues available and expenditures and the appropriations contained therein be and the same is hereby adopted as the tax for ambulance service purposes provided by 70 ILCS 705/22 Section 3. That all unexpended balances of any item or items of any general appropriation in this Ordinance Budget and Appropriations Ordinance for this fire protection district for this fiscal year; and the following sums of money, or as much thereof as may be authorized by law, are hereby appropriated to defray the necessary ex- be expended in making up any insufficiency in any other item or items in the same general appropriation and for penses and liabilities of the Burlington Community Fire Protection District, for its fiscal year beginning June 1, the same general purpose of any like appropriation made by this Ordinance.

Section 4. The Board Secretary shall cause a certified copy of this ordinance to be filed with the County Clerks 2014, and ending May 31, 2015, for the respective objects and purposes, as hereinafter set forth, namely: of Kane County and DeKalb County within 30 days of its adoption, as required by 35 ILCS 200/18-50 Section 5. That the invalidity of any item or section of this Ordinance shall not affect the validity of the whole Burlington Community Fire Protection District or any other part hereof.
