t was an interesting Monday morning this week as dozens of community members and elected officials gathered on Anderson Road in Elburn to officially open the new Anderson Road bridge, linking Route 38 to Keslinger Road.

The bridge, which crosses over the Union Pacific tracks on the south side of town, including the extension of Anderson Road, has been planned for two decades.

But as I drove into town Monday morning for the ceremony, I noticed a dense fog hovering over the area. The bridge was not visible at all. In fact, the street sign about 20 feet in front of me barely was visible.

It’s hard to show through a photograph the new extension and bridge – which was slated for the front page of the next day’s newspaper – when you can’t even see it. I

Gia Mia pizza bar to open in Geneva

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Gia Mia, featuring pizza baked in a woodfired oven, is in the works to open at 13 N. Third St., Geneva, the former location of the Great Harvest Bread Company, which closed in 2014.

This will be the third restaurant for Geneva resident Brian Goewey, who is part of a group of investors who owns another Gia Mia in Wheaton, which opened in April, and Fire+Wine in Glen Ellyn, which opened in 2012.

Although the sign on the building states it will open this fall, Goewey said the Geneva location instead is on track to open early next year.

“We had to do a complete overhaul,” Goewey said.

“There wasn’t electrical or plumbing or anything usable in the building, but we’ll definitely be open by March 1 or sooner.”

Goewey said his family has two children, and they have lived in Geneva for 10 years.

“We live real close to downtown, and I’ve been trying to find a reason to do a project there,” Goewey said.

“We love the town. We just had this opportunity that was right for us.”

Local high school grads rank community colleges, Midwestern universities among top choices

hen David Friedman began applying to colleges, he didn’t expect he would end up at a two-year school.

Attending a four-year college was the expectation, the 2014 St. Charles North High School graduate said, noting that choice was popular among his friends.

Friedman ended up declining his acceptance to the University of Illinois at Chicago to continue his education at Elgin Community College, which initially was “kind of under the radar,” he said.

But ECC – along with Waubonsee Community College – is among the most common institutions local students pick immediately after high school graduation, according to districts.

Other popular colleges among Batavia, Geneva, St. Charles and Kaneland students are such state schools as Northern Illinois University and Illinois State University, and other Midwestern schools, including Iowa State University, Indiana University and the University of Wisconsin campuses, the districts reported.

Knowing where the high school graduates go to college is helpful when talking with eighth-grade parochial school students and their parents as they consider their high school options, Geneva High School Principal Tom Rogers said.

Similarly, when new families move into the Tri-Cities area and tour Geneva High School, they often ask about the Batavia and St. Charles schools, Rogers said. He said he tells them they can’t go wrong with either of those communities.

“I think we’re fortunate to have great schools in the Fox Valley area,” Rogers said, noting that is reflected in the list of colleges the local graduates

attend.

On average, he said, about 20 percent of Geneva graduates take advantage of community colleges, but alumni also have gone to Ivy League schools and institutions abroad.

“It’s just good information for us to share with people,” Rogers said.

Diane McFarlin, assistant principal at Kaneland High School in Maple Park, said the affordability and scholarship opportunities make Waubonsee attractive to students.

Other schools within Illinois are popular among Kaneland grads, who tend to stay within the Midwest, she said. But, she added, their education also has taken them to such East Coast schools as Salem State University in Massachusetts.

McFarlin said guidance counselors help students through the college application process.

“I think it’s a real important thing to make sure we counsel kids correctly,” she said. “We want their dollars to really count.”

Friedman, who lives in South Elgin, said ECC’s lower tuition contributed to his decision to forgo his acceptance to UIC. Teachers would caution him and his classmates about college students becoming unfocused and dropping out, he said.

“Spending $19,000 a year just to get thrown off course didn’t seem like a good plan,” he said.

The North alumnus is working toward an associate degree in engineering science and is eyeing four-year schools to continue his education, he said.

He said he is “very glad” he decided to attend ECC but not for the reasons he initially would have thought, such as saving money.

“There’s a lot going on at ECC,” Friedman said, noting his involvement with the honors society Phi Theta Kappa.

Districts also warned that, because of a different scoring system, the PARCC results might create a perception of lower test scores. Rather, “they are simply different,” according to news releases from both Kaneland and Batavia School District 101.

Scores for Kaneland High School, for instance, indicated only 3 percent of students were proficient in English language arts and 11 percent were proficient in math. In 2014, the PSAE indicated 64 percent of students were proficient in reading and 61 percent were proficient in math.

With today’s release of the district- and school-level PARCC scores, central Kane County educators are cautioning people from reading too much into the results.

“We have questions about this test,” Geneva School District 304 Superintendent Kent Mutchler said, describing it as a “first best attempt at having a new test.”

PARCC – or Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers – last year replaced the long-used Illinois Standards Achievement Test and the Prairie State Achievement Examination.

Educators said it is difficult to find meaning in the results because there is no historical context.

“I just don’t see a lot of help out of this right now,” St. Charles School District 303 Superintendent Don Schlomann said.

Kaneland School District 302 Superintendent Todd Leden expressed similar sentiments.

Delays expected on Randall Road in St. Charles for repairs KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – Motorists should expect delays on Randall Road in St. Charles as the city makes repairs, according to a Kane County Division of Transportation news release.

Weather permitting, the manhole and pavement repairs are scheduled for 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to noon Monday in two locations south of Dean Street,

the release stated. It indicated steel plates will be in the roadway from Friday afternoon through Monday morning. Drivers should expect lane closures and delays and should be alert for workers, according to the release.

ELGIN – A 46-year-old St. Charles man has died after he was hit by a car in Elgin on Wednesday. He was identified as Donald G. Francis, according to the Kane County Coroner’s Office.

A spokeswoman said the coroner’s office had no address for Francis, but that his family lives in St. Charles. A preliminary autopsy report showed he died of multiple injuries because of being hit by a car, but no toxicology results will be available for several

weeks, the spokeswoman said.

Francis was walking in the roadway at 5:25 a.m. when he was struck by a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix that was traveling south on State Street at Route 20, according to a news release from Elgin police.

The 54-year-old driver from Elgin was not injured, according to the release, but Francis was taken to Presence St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin, where he was pronounced dead.

Elgin’s traffic unit is continuing to investigate the crash. Anyone with information is encouraged to call 847289-2661.

The city of St. Charles offices will be closed Dec. 24 and 25, as well as Jan. 1, the release stated.

Regularly scheduled refuse pickup is planned for the weeks of Dec. 21 and 28, according to the release.

The release indicates Christmas trees will be picked up during the weeks of Jan. 4 and 11 on the scheduled refuse day. A sticker will be required after this two-week period, the release stated.

Trees should not be placed in disposal bags, and residents

must remove all decorations, including tinsel.

Holiday lights and unwanted electronics may be dropped off at the St. Charles electronics recycling container at the public works facility, 1405 S. Seventh Ave., St. Charles, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays, excluding holidays.

Geneva Paw Boss inventors to be on ‘The Big Pitch’

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The Geneva inventors of Paw Boss, a method of cleaning dogs’ feet when they come into the house, will be featured on the Fox Business Channel, a cable network.

Kevin Skibinski and his son, Jake, did the audition during the summer in Las Vegas to a panel that included Kevin Harrington, formerly of “Shark Tank,” for his new show called “The Big Pitch.”

After each product pitch, Harrington and fellow panelists evaluate the product. It could lead to a half-hour infomercial, Skibinski said.

The Skibinskis’ audition was accepted for broadcast at 3:30 p.m.

Dec. 20, he said.

“We’re ecstatic about it,” Skibinski said. “Our pitch is one of many se-

lected to air.”

According to the show’s website, www. thebigpitchtv.com, products selected can gain exposure and marketing.

Skibinski’s Paw Boss, which launched this year after a trial-and-error invention period with his sons, offers clean water reservoirs to wash dogs’ dirty paws when they come into the house.

While Skibinski said sales of Paw Boss had not earned enough for him to quit his day job, he is selling the product all over the world, with most of it being sold online.

“I’ve sold to countries in Europe, in the United Kingdom, Australia,” Skibinski said. “I’ve sold several to Hawaii, a lot to Florida and Texas. We’re having very good sales.

It’s one of those things – there’s 76 million homes with dogs, so there’s definitely a market there.”

The release from Kaneland indicated several factors – including standardized-test fatigue, a focus on Advanced Placement tests and the number of students who opted out of the PARCC – might have contributed to the scores.

“Once we have individual test results for students, we will take some time to compare students’ scores to other academic data, such as ACT scores and their grade point average (GPA) as an internal auditing mechanism to gauge effort and preparedness,” the release stated.

Some districts, including Batavia, indicated they would release individual student PARCC scores next month in conjunction with other performance measures, such as MAP scores and report cards.

“Our students are not defined by a single test score,” Batavia’s chief curriculum officer, Brad Newkirk, stated in a release.

Educators said changes already are planned for the second year of PARCC. One change includes reducing the number of testing windows from two to one, Mutchler said.

“There’s bound to be improvements on this year,” he said.

To the Editor: A Republican candidate for president, Dr. Ben Carson, was leading in the polls. He apparently had great success as a neurosurgeon. He grew up in the slums and overcame great obstacles to his success. But he has told the public he was violent as a boy and tried to harm his mother. He also claims he attempted to stab a friend in the belly with a knife, but the blade hit the boy’s large buckle and that saved the boy’s life. He changed his ways when he got religion.

Perhaps this is true, but perhaps it isn’t. It certainly does make an excellent storyline for an autobiography.

That is exactly what has happened. He wrote such a book – and others – and he’s making a mint. All of the publicity of being a presidential aspirant has helped in the sales. He has taken time off from campaigning to sign books.

Let’s just assume his story is true. If in fact it really is true, is that the type of person we want in the presidency? Obviously not, in my opinion.

We certainly expect our president to support the law and not have a record of trying to kill anyone. If he made it up to sell books, would you forgive him and wonder how truly religious he really is? The media has made an effort to check this story by talking to a number of people who knew him as a boy. They could not remember any violent behavior. When confronted by the media on this question, he lost his laid-back demeanor and accused them of being unfair to him. He has said it is all right to vet a candidate, but no one in the past has been treated so badly.

This obviously is not true. President Obama has been repeatedly harassed by the media, and in our history, going back to President Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln, it is common practice.

Does he truly believe that you can run for president and not be asked difficult questions by the media?

Why Hillary Clinton had a good year

By JONATHAN BERNSTEIN Bloomberg View I’m a fan of The Washington Post’s Chris Cillizza, but when he gets one wrong, it’s often a doozy. And saying that Hillary Clinton had the “worst year in Washington” is about as wrong as you can get.

Yes, Clinton did, as Cillizza remembers, suffer through a scandal, and she emerged with bruised polling numbers, at least when it came to perceptions of her honesty. If the award was “worst summer in Washington,” I could see Clinton as a contestant, although Scott Walker and Matt Williams would be stronger choices.

For the year, though?

One year ago, Clinton was the leading candidate for the Democratic nomination, perhaps in the best position any nonincumbent has been in modern times. Yet two potentially strong contenders, Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Vice President Joe Biden, were lurking around the edges of the con-

test, not exactly active candidates but not far from doing what candidates at that stage do. Nor was it entirely clear yet how strong Clinton’s grip on party actors might be when she stumbled the way all candidates do.

A year later, Warren and Biden no longer are threats. Although Sen. Bernie Sanders put together an impressive campaign, he’s about as weak a major opponent as Clinton could have imagined drawing. In the closest similar case, Al Gore in 2000 had to defeat Bill Bradley, who was far more broadly acceptable to the party than Sanders is now, mainly because most Democrats believe Sanders would be a disastrous general-election candidate.

Meanwhile, Clinton has amassed more support from party actors than any previous nonincumbent in the modern era. A potential threat from a House select committee that appears to exist just to do opposition research on her has turned into a bad joke. The summer scandals seem to have died down; they could return, but it’s not

clear if voters will care. And her performance in the marathon session in front of that select committee quieted the whispers that her age might be an impediment in her campaign.

Sure, not everything is perfect for Clinton. The economy hasn’t boomed, and Barack Obama’s approval ratings remain mediocre, leaving the general election more or less a toss-up at this still early point. And it hasn’t been a good year for her record as secretary of state, particularly her close involvement in Libya policy.

But overall I’d consider her at least a contender for “best year” honors – because locking up a presidential nomination early is an impressive (and underrated) accomplishment. (If I had a “best year” vote, I’d likely opt for Paul Ryan, or maybe Marco Rubio, or there’s always Bryce Harper.)

Worst year? Not even close.

“We don’t have a lot of depth,” Govea said.

Just 18 wrestlers – spread across each level – populate the mat room, but Govea gushes about the effort Austin Macias of each one and how it makes these Rockets “a special group.”

“The group of kids that I have, I can’t speak bad about,” Govea sad. “They come every day to work, they put the work in and battle. They put the work in every meet. … We might have a few holes in the lineup and the scoreboard doesn’t always go your way, but each one as an individual, they do their best at each weight and they battle.”

Returning Class 2A state qualifier Austin Macias, a sophomore who climbed two weight classes to 120 pounds, helps anchor the Rockets alongside veteran seniors Adam Mengel (145) and Ray Rushing (152).

Freshman Nick Termini, perhaps following the lead of Macias’ 39-win season in 2014-15, also is shining in the early season at what Govea calls “a man’s weight class,” 126.

“It’s hard to come back from down 18 points,” Govea said, a nod to the team deficit BC faces by forfeiting three weight classes. “Our guys are learning the value of what it takes to compete as a dual team, getting those bonus points.

“Then the goal just becomes bringing home individual hardware at every tournament that we’re at.”

Schedule toughens eager ’Dogs Justin Major watched from a capacity crowd last year as Batavia entertained Geneva in the Batavia Fine Arts Center,

an unconventional venue that clearly was ready for prime time.

“Yeah, I wanted to be up there,” Major said, “and this year I probably will, so I’m pretty excited for that.”

Major credits practice partners Andy Posledni and Josh Fischer for fortifying him during his freshman season at 120, although the Bulldogs’ rigid early season schedule also has done the trick.

Duals against Glenbard North, Minooka and Sandburg, among others, already have provided valuable tests as Batavia braces for the Upstate Eight Conference River Division portion of its schedule.

“That helps a lot,” junior 138-pounder Seth Winkle said. “When we come out in conference, it just makes it seem a little bit easier. When we come out against St. Charles East, it prepares us for them. The top teams in the state, getting those duals in is important.”

“It’s tough, especially when you don’t know what anyone’s doing after just playing with them for a couple days,” Walker said. “You just kind of play your own game, move the puck, get the puck and just work hard.”

Kiersted earned a permanent spot with the Steel doing just that. He served as a fill-in down the stretch last season before shining during the summer, catching the eye of Muse and Co. “Yeah,” Kiersted said, “it’s an exciting move when you get called up to come play. … It’s a little nerve-racking for them at first, but I think the transition with the guys that came this weekend and earlier have been so far good this year.”

Former Cougar Heesch joins Cardinals

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Former Cubs prospect Michael Heesch, a Prairie Ridge product who pitched with the Cougars in 2013 and 2014, was selected Thursday by the St. Louis Cardinals in the Triple-A portion of the Rule 5 Draft Michael for unproHeesch tected minor leaguers.

The draft is one of the final phases of baseball’s annual winter meetings and includes a major league and minor league portion.

Because Heesch was left unprotected by the Cubs, who drafted him in the eighth

round in 2012, he could be selected by clubs to pitch at a higher level for a $12,000 fee.

Heesch was 8-2 with a 2.24 ERA for Advanced-A Myrtle Beach (South Carolina) in 2015, striking out 49 and walking 24 in 64⅓ innings over 33 appearances. He helped the Pelicans to the Carolina League title one year after pitching for the Cougars’ 2014 Midwest League championship club.

Heesch, 25, is 18-13 with a 2.93 ERA in four minor league seasons, striking out 194 and walking 83 in 257⅔ innings over 94 appearances and 22 starts.

Rasich said Witczak’s two 3s put an end to the Royals’ comeback hopes.

“We got it down to eight at one point and then she hit those 3s,” Rasich said. “That was the dagger.”

The Royals hit six shots from behind the arc themselves, including three by sophomore center Syndney Drozdowski.

Her nine points led the Royals.

She also had five rebounds and a steal.

Witczak and Audrey Soto led the Bandits with 12 points each.

Kalleses felt going to a manto-man defense from a 1-2-2 zone made the difference.

“They were picking us apart in the zone,” he said. “We have to switch to man-to-man.”

AURORA – Long-range shooting keyed the Resurrection girls basketball team’s 5441 win over Rosary on Thursday night.

Eight 3-pointers, including six in the first half, kept the Bandits’ lead in double digits for much of the Girls Catholic Athletic Conference contest.

A 6-0 run to open the second half pushed the Bandit lead to 19, but Rosary kept battling, and when junior guard Caitlyn Unruh hit a jumper early in the fourth quarter, the Royals had cut the Resurrection lead to 44-36.

H o w e v e r , Don Rasich on consecutive trips down the floor, Bandits guard Ivy Witczak hit 3-pointers to push the Resurrection lead back to 14 , and Rosary never trimmed the lead back to single digits.

Still, Royals coach Don Rasich was pleased with his squad’s effort.

“I am proud of the girls,” he said. “The last two games, things have not come together.

We have struggled shooting, and that is a really good Resurrection team. They are one of the top teams in the conference.”

Training benefits Three Fires Council KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE neighbors@kcchronicle.com The Boy Scouts of America Three Fires Council 2015 Training Academy brought together 770 adult leaders and youths for program-specific training Nov. 14 – an 11 percent increase from the previous year and a record for the council, a news release from the organization stated.

The annual Training Academy, which was at East Aurora High School, offered more than 180 different training classes from which to choose, and participants were able to select up to five different courses during the day.

“Mission Possible: The Spy WHo [sic] Trained Me” served as the theme for the day.

“Every Scout deserves a trained leader,” Joe Wiltrout, Scout executive for the Three Fires Council, stated before the event, according to the release.

“Over 143 staff members, both professional and volunteer, worked diligently to provide formal leadership training and enrichment courses that will enhance each Scout’s experience in the program,” the release stated. “Adult participants selected from formal

The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law. The Three Fires Council serves more than 22,000 youths throughout all or parts of Kane, DuPage, Kendall, DeKalb, Will and Cook counties.

There seems to be a new symbol of Christmastime giving.

It’s called “The Ugly Sweater.”

Perhaps this is a breakout from the persistent school-of-thought that authorizes the practice of gifting something needed, rather than something desired? As many of us experienced during those growing-up Christmastimes, warm-weather gear – such as gloves and scarves – filled those spaces under the bubble light and tinsel tree.

Underwear? New snow boots (the kind with buckles)?

A nice thick woolly sweater with a bold pattern?

All dutifully wrapped with classic green or red paper (blue and white might be tolerated, but surely no pastel paper).

So, the aim to be practical with enough flair to be tolerated has morphed into “The Ugly Sweater,” which is part joke, part body warmer and part show off.

The only remaining issue is who gets one.

In my family, the “Ug” is a fine swap for those who gauge the best gift for a granny to be a shawl, warm slippers or a book with large print. Here’s an “Ug” for the spouse who moans each year, “I never know

what to get for you.”

People – try to think chocolate! Glamour! Giggles!

Also in my family, there comes the time to expect the “Ug” with dozens of tiny Badgers, always in bright red and sized for one and all.

How about securing a red “Ug” for a volunteer bell ringer with The Salvation Army? A great gift for the city/county snow plow driver to show thanks. Stitches outlining hearts, tiny Christmas trees and jingle bells in a bulky turtleneck format should do nicely.

Sure, we’d all probably prefer some new coffee blends, an invigorating fragrance, a special something from someone who truly knows us. But you must understand the never-yet-suppressed need to give something practical, something – according to my world – you really need.

There still is plenty of time to stuff the stockings at Lazarus House, adopt a pet from a shelter or make plans for a Christmas church service. Never mind those who point a finger of scorn, if they haven’t seen you before. Sit up front with the children who understand their faith.

24 Warfarin should be monitored to make sure dose is correct Note to Readers: This column is an update of one that originally appeared in August 2012.

Dear Dr. K: I recently

had a stent placed and am now taking warfarin. I hear this medicine causes bleeding. Is it really necessary for me to take it?

Dear Reader: Warfarin is an anticoagulant, or blood thinner. It decreases your blood’s ability to clot. There are times when we need our blood to form clots. If we cut our skin and it starts bleeding, or if an ulcer in our stomach starts bleeding, we need the bleeding to stop. When the blood forms clots, bleeding stops.

On the other hand, some conditions tend to increase the tendency of the blood to clot. Some people inherit genes that make their blood clot more easily. A stent in an artery of the heart, like you have, makes the blood clot more easily.

Stents are wire mesh cylinders that open up the middle of an artery that is partially blocked by cholesterol-rich plaque, or atherosclerosis.

Widening the artery improves the flow of blood to a part of the heart. However, if a clot forms inside the stent, it can cause the very thing the stent is supposed to prevent: a heart attack.

For that reason, people are given any of several “blood-thinning” drugs to reduce the risk of clots for at least a year after a stent is placed.

Blood-thinning drugs other than warfarin are often used.

You might ask the doctor who prescribed the warfarin why he or she chose that particular blood thinner.

My guess is that you have another condition that is best treated with warfarin. That could be the irregular heart rhythm called atrial fibrillation, an artificial

Anyone taking warfarin should be regularly monitored with a blood test called a protime/ INR. This test tells if the blood is thinned just the right amount. The dose of warfarin is adjusted depending on the result.

The effects of warfarin on blood clotting can be influenced by other drugs you may be taking. For example, some antibiotics and antifungal drugs increase warfarin’s blood-thinning ability; others do the opposite. So be sure the doctor who is prescribing warfarin knows if you start a new medicine or stop an old one.

For example, another doctor that you see may start or stop a medicine.

Although he or she should inform the doctor prescribing the warfarin of the change, don’t assume that’s happened.

And if you get an overthe-counter drug at the drugstore, let the doctor know.

If you are prescribed a new medicine since your last protime/INR test, you can find out online if that new medicine might have an interaction with the warfarin. Type “drugdrug interaction checker” into a search engine; you’ll find sites that make this easy for you.

Many doctors use computerized systems that check this for them when they are ordering a new medicine, but double-check yourself to be sure.

Victor Mollo, who was born in Russia but lived most of his life in London, wrote many stories about bridge-playing fauna. Mollo died in 1987, but some years later, a cache of unpublished articles was found, enough for four books. The final collection, “Last Call in the Menagerie” (Master Point Press), appeared earlier this year.

All of these books feature unusual deals with some instructive elements and humorous narrative. The main character is the acerbic Hideous Hog, who knows how to get the best out of his partners and worst out of his opponents. In this deal, the Hog sat North, and his partner was the Rueful Rabbit, a very weak player who was born under a lucky star.

In this rubber-bridge deal, the Rabbit ended in five hearts. How did he plan the play after West led the spade king?

The Hog had carefully hidden his spade ace between the four and five.

He was worried that East would be void in spades and did not want the Rabbit to waste the ace.

So, West took the first trick and continued with the spade queen.

Then, as the Rabbit pulled the four into the middle of the table, the ace jutted out.

The Rabbit ruffed, cashed his heart ace, played a heart to the queen, discarded a club on the spade ace, ruffed the third round of clubs in his hand, returned to the dummy with a trump, and discarded a diamond on the club eight – the only way to make the contract.

Dear Abby: I made a big mistake three years ago.

When I found out my husband was cheating on me, I became vengeful and sought revenge.

I ended up sleeping with my sister-in-law’s boyfriend to get back at my husband and at her for some things she did in the past. It took my pain away – for a bit.
