Dick Durbin, D-Illinois, on Wednesday announced the omnibus appropriations bill for fiscal 2015, which preserves federal funding for scientific research and development programs that support work at both Fermilab in Batavia and Argonne National Laboratory in Lemont.

The bill must now be voted on by both chambers of Congress and signed into law by President Barack Obama.

“We need to do more for our national labs,” Durbin said in a news release. “The omnibus appropriations bill protects funding for the ongoing research at both Argonne National Lab and Fermilab, but we can’t lose sight of the important role these labs play in keeping the United States competitive in this fast-paced global economy. Investing in their potential for scientific and technological innovation now will put our nation at the forefront of discovery in the future.”

long baseline neutrino experiment, a primary focus at Fermilab.

Fermilab is the nation’s premier high-energy physics laboratory and employs more than 1,257 people, including

physicists, engineers and computer professionals, according to the release.

The laboratory leads U.S. research into the fundamental nature of matter and energy.

STC man charged in fatal crash appears in court

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles man charged in a Nov. 28 crash that killed a 65-yearold St. Charles woman had his preliminary court hearing Wednesday.

Joshua E. Spudich, 23, of the 400 block of South Second Street, faces four counts of aggravated driving under the influence, a Class 2 felony; possession of a controlled substance, a Class 4 felony; driving under the influence of

drugs, a Class A misdemeanor; driving with a revoked license, a Class A misdemeanor; and improper lane use, a petty offense.

According to police, Spudich was driving a 2003 Hyundai Santa Fe south on Second Street when he drifted across the center median and struck a northbound 2004 Toyota Corolla driven by Susan Gorecki.

Gorecki died in the crash.

During the hearing in front of Kane County Judge Clint Hull, Spudich was told he qualifies for having a public

defender represent him. His next hearing is set for Jan. 8.

Spudich remained in the Kane County Jail as of Wednesday afternoon on a $1 million bond, according to Joshua online records.

Spudich Spudich suffered minor injuries in the crash, which happened about 2 p.m. Nov. 28 at North Second Street and Timbers Trail in St. Charles.

At the time of the crash, Spudich possessed less than 15 grams of a substance containing heroin, and marijuana was detected in his system, according to court records.

Kane County Coroner Rob Russell has said an autopsy on Gorecki confirmed the preliminary cause of death was directly related to the crash.

Toxicology samples also were collected and sent to a forensic lab for results.

During his monthly media briefing on Tuesday, Kane County State’s Attorney Joe

McMahon said he will be prosecuting the case himself.

This is not the first time Spudich has been charged in Kane County. His past charges include unlawful possession of alcohol in April 2010 in St. Charles and, in Geneva, driving under the influence of alcohol in August 2010.

In November 2010, he and three other teens were accused of robbing a group in a park in unincorporated St. Charles Township. He was charged with aggravated robbery in that incident.

ST. CHARLES – Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon is hopeful a new state law that takes effect Jan. 1 and will set forth new procedures for suspect lineups will help reduce any cases of mistaken identification.

“The goal is to get it right,” McMahon said Tuesday during his monthly media briefing. “No victim wants to misidentify the wrong offender. But it also is to protect the rights of the defendant.”

The new law requires suspect lineups to be conducted by an independent administrator, unless it is not practical.

It also requires an automated computer program – or other device – that can automatically display a photo lineup to an eyewitness in a manner that prevents the lineup administrator from seeing which pho-

wants to misidentify the wrong offender.

THE FUTURE OF CORNEAL TREATMENT? Currently, when the clear outer lens on the front of the eye (cornea) needs to be replaced, the cornea of a donor is used to conduct a corneal transplant. One of the most common transplants performed, it is often recommended for patients with vision problems caused by a thinning cornea (usually due to keratoconus), scarring of the cornea (due to infection or injury), or vision loss caused by cloudiness of the cornea (usually due to Fuchs’ dystrophy). While current procedures call for harvesting donor tissue from deceased individuals, researchers were recently able to regrow human corneal tissue using adult-derived human stem cells. It is hoped that this may lead to the future use of stem cells in reversing corneal damage.

P.S. The ability to regrow corneal tissue may have a great impact on the lives of many since loss of corneal tissue is one of the leading causes of blindness.

The law applies to both live and photo lineups. The new law also requires that an audio and video recording of the lineup be made, when practical, for documenting all statements made by the eyewitness.

In addition, it requires the lineup administrator, when practical, to separate all eyewitnesses in order to prevent the eyewitnesses from talking to each other before and during the lineup procedure.

The law requires every law enforcement agency to have written procedures regarding suspect lineups.

McMahon said he didn’t know how many cases of suspect misidentification have occurred in Kane County.

“It has certainly been an issue in wrongful convictions across the country,” he said.

She was 70.

Topinka, of Riverside, was re-elected to a second fouryear term as state comptroller last month. She also served as state treasurer from 1995 to 2007 and ran for governor in 2006.

Bike and pedestrian crossing work planned for Kirk Road site

Kane County plans to install pedestrian-activated warning lights for crossing at that site.

“It provides an extra warning device for drivers,” Steve Coffinbargar, assistant director of transportation, told the Transportation Committee on Wednesday.

Other improvements planned for that site include sidewalk removal and replacement, pavement markings and roadway signs.

The project initially went

out to bid in June, but the low bidder came in 40 percent over the engineer’s estimate, Coffinbargar said.

That prompted a redesign for a November letting, which returned four bids, he said.

The low bidder was Virgil Cook and Sons Inc. of DeKalb, with a proposed contract amount of $69,913.17 – about 9.5 percent over the engineer’s estimate.

Staff, however, is recommending approval, Coffinbargar said, noting Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program funds will cover about $56,980 – or 89 percent – of the costs.

The county’s anticipated participation is almost

$13,000.

In other news, the county is seeking County Board approval to spend about $154,000 to replace two plow trucks and about $180,600 on snow plow equipment that will be placed on the vehicles. Both items are budgeted.

The county has used less, staff said. Last year, staff said, crews were out daily after Dec. 1, and so far this year they have gone out six to seven times and have used about 1,500 tons of salt and some sand.

“Judy Baar Topinka was a towering figure in Illinois politics during her many years of service, and I was always impressed by her ability to build relationships across the aisle and get the job done,” Hultgren said.

Kane County Development Committee Chairman Kurt Kojzarek also recognized Topinka’s service and requested a moment of silence for her at the end of Wednesday’s meeting.

ST. CHARLES – An IRS scam has affected St. Charles residents, police announced Tuesday in a news release.

The latest incident, which was reported Nov. 29, involved a woman receiving a voice mail where someone claimed to be with the IRS. The message stated the woman needed to call a phone number, or an arrest warrant would be issued in her name, the release states.

The woman called the number – 585-444-7131 – and spoke with a male subject who had a strong Middle Eastern accent, according to the release. That male disconnected and called the resident back from a different number – 800-829-1040 – which is actually the listed telephone assistance number for the IRS. During the second call, the male told the resident she owed $2,000 in back taxes, and if the amount was not paid immediately, a warrant would be issued for her arrest, the release states.

The resident complied with the man’s request to go to Meijer and purchase $2,000 in Reloadit Cards. After receiving the numbers, the man immediately disconnected, according to the release.

Two similar incidents occurred in June, according to St. Charles police. The two June phone calls came from a 202 area code, which covers Washington, D.C. In the second June case, the offender was able to “spoof” both the IRS phone number in Washington, D.C., and the St. Charles Police Department’s main phone number to make it look on Caller ID as if the calls were legitimate. Also in the second case, the offender identified herself as a St. Charles police officer, the release states.

A resident unfazed by the scam recently forwarded to the police department the actual voice mail he received as part of the scam.

If there ever is a question as to the legitimacy of a government phone call, contact the agency, or contact the St. Charles Police Department for assistance.

Residents who feel they have been a victim of a scam are asked to contact St. Charles police at 630-377-4435 to make a report. The IRS does track the reports and is actively working these fraud cases.

The city is looking to approve a contract with Kansas-based CivicPlus to design and host its website. As proposed, the contract would not exceed $36,000.

Howard Chason, the city’s information systems director, told aldermen at Tuesday’s Committee of the Whole meeting that the current website was designed by the city’s information systems department and is more than nine years old. The site was last updated five years ago.

“Technology changes such as the use of tablets and mobile computing – coupled with limited staff time – has us looking to outsource the site’s design and hosting to CivicPlus,” Chason told aldermen.

Chason said the website is in need of a facelift, including improving the navigation of the site and its design. In July, city officials asked companies to submit proposals for designing and hosting Batavia’s website. The city received 16 proposals and narrowed the list to six.

The six companies gave a presentation and demonstration in front of a committee of city employees. The committee narrowed the list to three candidates, who were brought in for a second demonstration.

The committee then unanimously chose CivicPlus as the best company to design and host the city’s website.

According to Chason, CivicPlus has more than 1,700 government clients, including the cities of Geneva and Elgin.

“I really do like that these guys have so much municipal experience,” 7th Ward Alderman Drew McFadden said.

Attorney Matthew Welch submitted a written motion to have interim village clerk John Strauss replaced on the Campton Hills Electoral Board by a court-appointed public member.

Welch’s motion was granted during a village Electoral Board meeting Tuesday at the Congregational United

Church of Christ, 40W451 Fox Mill Blvd., Campton Hills.

“The nature of the objections [is] most likely going to require his testimony,” Welsh said of Strauss, who said he was fine with Welch’s motion.

Campton Hills Village President Patsy Smith on Dec. 3 filed objections to the nominating petitions of Village Trustee Harry Blecker, who is running for village president; Trustees Susan George and Laura Andersen, who are seeking re-election; and trustee hopeful Michael O’Dwyer.

In all of her objections, Smith wrote that the candidates did not circle the proper word on the statement of candidacy form; gave the wrong date of the election, indicating Feb. 24, as opposed to April 7; and filed the nominating petitions before the

Welch on Tuesday also submitted written motions to strike and dismiss Smith’s petition objections. Ken Shepro, Smith’s attorney on the matter, will have until Dec. 16 to respond to the motion, and Welch will then have 72

A letter was sent Wednesday morning via email to Kane County Chief Judge Judith Brawka to seek the appointment of a new member to the village electoral board, Village Attorney Bill Braithwaite said. As the village attorney, Braithwaite automatically is designated as the Electoral Board’s attorney.

The Electoral Board agreed to recess Tuesday’s meeting until 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Campton Hills.

Todd Leden, an administrator at Fenton Community High School District 100, was introduced Wednesday as the first of two finalists for the Kaneland superintendent position.

Leden, currently the Fenton district’s associate superintendent and the principal at Fenton High School, has ties to the Tri-Cities. Leden worked in Geneva School District 304, serving as an assistant athletic director, teacher and girls basketball coach at Geneva High School.

District 100 Leden was introduced Wednesday at a meeting at the Kaneland High School library, with community members invited to ask questions. Leden fielded questions that participants wrote on index cards. The questions were read by Krauspe. Leden said he was an Aurora native who has spent 25 years in education and that he considers the Kaneland position ideal.

He said he considers himself to be a collaborative person, but he said there are situations in which a top-down structure is a better fit. He fielded questions on bullying, curriculum, leadership style and difficult decisions he has had to make while in his position at Fenton.

On bullying, he spoke enthusiastically about bringing a safety-tip hotline to the district, in which those affected could click on an item online, and the concerns would go directly to him. He said a key issue is social media, where a lot of bullying might take place.

He said there could be assemblies and efforts to educate students about using social media appropriately.

He also spoke of an organization at Fenton, Students United, or STUNT. Leden said he would plan town-hall meetings in the communities that make up Kaneland, to learn the characteristics that make each community special.

Brian, 23, remembers his teens as a “blur of partying.” He says that the fuzziness is a product of years of using marijuana daily, with occasional use of other drugs.

At 17, he dropped out of school, left home and got a job. Over the next few years, he says that his drug use increasingly got in the way of his work and relationships, even causing him to miss work and lose interest in favorite past times. But what finally got Brian into addiction treatment was a deepening depression.

“I was used to being down on myself, but now I even had suicidal thoughts,” he says. “I didn’t think I’d act on them, but I knew I needed help.”

At the Edward Hospital ER, Brian underwent a psychological assessment. A Linden Oaks at Edward counselor, in consultation with a psychiatrist, recommended that Brian start treatment in Linden Oaks’ partial hospitalization program, which runs Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Depending on a person’s needs, the Linden Oaks Addiction Program also offers an intensive outpatient

“Brian’s situation illustrates some of the problems that can occur with marijuana use,” says Beth Sack, manager, addiction services at Linden Oaks. She says that the level of THC — pot’s primary mind-altering ingredient — was 3.76 percent in 1995. Today it’s 15 percent. “Some people do become both psychologically and physically dependent,” she confirms.

Patients in Linden Oaks’ partial hospitalization program participate in group and individual therapy, daily meditation and addiction education sessions. When there is a dual diagnosis, such as chemical dependency and depression, the person receives treatment for both issues.

Brian will soon finish his partial hospitalization program. Follow-up will include individual sessions with his therapist and NA (Narcotics Anonymous), a community-based support group.

“The program already has helped me big time,” says Brian. “The group process helped me get over some of my shyness and social anxiety. If I were the adult me talking to my younger self, I would say, ‘I know that pot has a reputation as an “innocent” drug, but if you have a genetic predisposition and an addictive personality like I have, it can mess up your head. And the window of being able to stop it can close quickly.’”

Kane County Recycles to host free event Saturday

St. Charles receives $100K state grant KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – The city of St. Charles was awarded a $100,000 grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, according to a news release issued Tuesday.

The award will be used for two St. Charles Police Department projects and one St. Charles Fire Department project, the release states.

St. Charles police plan to construct a shelter at its Public Safety Training Facility on Route 38, west of Peck Road, according to the release. The police department also will purchase and install a remote video camera system in the downtown St. Charles area of 1st, Walnut, 3rd and Cedar streets.

The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity administers and oversees nearly 10,000 grants each fiscal year and partners with businesses, local governments, nonprofit organizations, workers and families to enhance the state’s economy, the release states.

Remembering Judy Baar Topinka Before she was a politician, Judy Baar Topinka was an award-winning journalist.

Topinka, 70, died early Wednesday, less than a day after she suffered a stroke. She was the first woman in Illinois to serve in two state constitutional offices. She had just won re-election in November as state comptroller.

Topinka served the public as a journalist before devoting her life to public service as an elected official.

She attended Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism and graduated in 1966. After graduation, she worked part time for the Berwyn, Cicero and Stickney-Forest View Life Newspapers before being hired full time in 1971.

In her journalism career, Topinka was a reporter, education editor, feature writer, feature editor and photographer. She won awards from the Illinois Women’s Press Association, the Illinois Press Association and the Illinois State Medical Society.

Topinka, a Republican, morphed into one of the most outspoken politicians in Illinois and was a trailblazer for women in politics.

A lifelong Riverside resident, she won election to the Illinois House in 1980. She moved to the state Senate in 1984. Ten years later, she was elected to the first of her three terms as state treasurer.

In 2006, she unsuccessfully ran against Rod Blagojevich for Illinois governor. She returned to public office in 2010, when she was elected state comptroller.

In every stop along the way, Topinka had one thing in mind: Making Illinois a great place to live. Her style might have been considered unorthodox. Her personality might have been off-putting to some. But her dedication to Illinois and public service can’t be questioned.

Christmas on a high school budget As of today, there are 14 days until Christmas. So many seasonal activities to do, so little time ... and most pressingly, so little money to accomplish those aforementioned activities. Luckily, over the years, I’ve found a way to enjoy the holiday season spending little to no money. So, without further adieu, let’s dive into 10 things I’ve found that any high school student would love to do this December (and probably can afford!).

1. Who doesn’t love sledding? Wheeler Park and Fabyan Forest Preserve both have some awesome hills that I’ve soared down many a time. There’s something about racing down a snowy slope, the wind in my hair and the cold nipping at my nose, that makes me feel like a little kid again.

2. One of my family’s favorite traditions is driving around and looking at Christmas lights. Whether the display is over-the-top elaborate or just simple, I love seeing different decoration styles. For example, Cheever Avenue in Geneva

3. There’s no better way to get in the holiday spirit than by listening to Christmas music. I enjoy everything from 93.9’s selections on the radio to my family’s own CD collection. There’s something about it that just brings the holidays to life.

4. Christmas movies are one of the staples of the season, and watching them is one of my favorite holiday activities. After all, who doesn’t love Hallmark Christmas films, “Elf,” or a personal favorite from my childhood, “My Little Pony: A Very Minty Christmas”?

5. Bring Christmas caroling back! Get a group of friends together and spread some cheer with your voices. You never know, it just might give a Scrooge exactly what he needs to get in the

spirit!

6. Do you want to build a snowman? As young Anna and Elsa would agree, there’s something magical about building a snowman right in your front yard, and somehow I love it no matter how old I get!

7. Feeling crafty? How about making some paper snowflakes? Though my mother never particularly enjoys the bits of colored paper that clutter the floor after a snowflake-making spree, I’ve always found happiness in making them and placing them around the house.

8. Drink hot chocolate!

Need I say more? And as Starbucks’ Peppermint Hot Chocolate is one of my alltime favorite drinks, I daresay I’ll be doing this quite a bit this holiday season!

9. A sure way to stir up some spirit is by making (and eating) Christmas cookies. My mom’s mint meringues are the best, and – of course – we all love those peanut butter cookies with the Hershey’s Kiss in the middle. My mouth is

watering just thinking about them.

10. Last but not least, let’s not forget gifts. However, you don’t need a flashy, expensive present to make someone’s day. It’s often the homemade gifts that mean the most, such as pictures, letters, crafts and, of course, food! The time you put into a thoughtful gift for someone will lead to joy and gratitude on Christmas morning.

As you can see, a bursting bank account isn’t necessary to enjoy the holidays. In fact, the best ways to celebrate are usually the ones that don’t require lots of money. So, I encourage you to get out in the community, explore new ways to cherish this special time of year ... and be sure to eat plenty of Christmas cookies!

BYOB IN THE TRI-CITIES Restaurants that allow diners to bring own wine, beer becoming more common?

But the ability to bring-your-own-beer – or other alcoholic beverage – to a restaurant in the Tri-Cities seems to be gaining momentum, providing ample opportunity for patrons to forgo amped up alcohol prices without forgoing the alcohol.

E&S Fish Company and Liu Brothers Bistro in St. Charles; Tusk Thai and Thai Village in Batavia; and Bangkok Restaurant in Geneva are a few establishments that allow patrons to bring their own alcohol – specifically wine and beer – to dinner.

The concept often is employed in places unwilling to fork over a healthy liquor license fee or that don’t have enough allocated space for alcohol storage and a bar, said E&S Fish Company owner and chef Ernesto Candia.

“We’re not really a restaurant; it’s something I’m doing on the side, because ...

I love cooking,” Candia said of his 36-seat St. Charles fish market, which also serves seafood-inspired dishes at dinner – only by reservation – three nights a week.

Reservations for white table cloth-style dining can be made any time between 6 and 8 p.m. Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The restaurant also is open for lunch, serving items such as sushi and fish sandwiches.

Regular customer Greg Vogelman of Geneva has been exercising his right to BYOB at E&S for years, visiting for lunch and two or three times a month for dinner with his wife, Susan.

“It’s the freshest fish in town,” Greg Vogelman said, while also citing Candia’s culinary prowess as the culprit of his repeat visits.

Vogelman, who often brings in wine and – on special occasions – champagne when dining at E&S, said there should be more BYOB restaurants in the area because, “You get a better value.”

times,” Vogelman said. “If you’re going to spend $80 on wine, why not buy an $80 bottle of wine instead of buying a $20 bottle of wine and paying $80 for it.”

Alcohol can be a big-ticket item for business at many restaurants, but Candia said he charges enough for the meal to cover costs. He can see why BYOB isn’t a logical option for bigger restaurants. “[It’s] not for the big restaurants because they want to make big money, but I don’t really care about that,” Candia said.

One of the newest gastronomical haunts to join the BYOB scene is Liu Brothers Bistro, located in the Tin Cup Pass shopping area along Route 64 in St. Charles.

Having opened in February of this year, St. Charles native Kevin Hawkins – who owns and manages Liu Brothers alongside the Beijing-born chefs and owners Kevin and David Liu – said BYOB is allowing customers to explore more of the Asian bistro’s menu.

“I’ve had, on more than one occasion, a customer tell me, ‘I usually don’t order appetizers because I’m having to pay $9

In addition to the restaurant being BYOB, Beijing Chinese cuisine that boasts bolder flavors, uses natural ingredients and doesn’t have any MSG set his place apart from other Chinese food eatery’s, Hawkins said.

If the BYOB concept isn’t gaining momentum in the suburbs now, Hawkins said, he thinks it will in the future.

“We are so busy now that we started the BYOB,” Hawkins said. “It just took off like crazy, so I think we’re going to keep it.”

One restaurant that made the switch from BYOB to restaurant-with-full-bar was El Molcajete in Geneva.

About five years ago, the Mexican

eatery utilized the BYOB concept for six months while it awaited a liquor license.

When the restaurant officially did away with BYOB offerings, owner and chef Isaias Gomez said business went down for the first two weeks when regulars stopped coming, but picked back up within a month.

“Business has been good ever since,” Gomez said.

So good, in fact, that Gomez has opened a second location under the same name, serving the same fare and in the same town. The second El Molcajete restaurant is located on Third Street in downtown Geneva, has a full bar, two decks and is “three times bigger” than its original counterpart, Gomez said.

Only time will tell whether such a blossoming concept will continue to flourish in the suburbs, but – as for the Tri-Cities – it’s safe to say that BYOB is here to stay.

Meatballs, gnocchi must-haves at rustic Riganato GENEVA – “Oh my God!” was all I could say after my first bite.

The velvety Jalapeño Gnocchi warmed my palate like a cashmere blanket. Before long, I began popping each jalapeño-, ricotta- and manchego-stuffed piece of perfection like popcorn. The generous portion of fresh cilantro- and walnut-laced pesto sauce layered each piece like frosting on a cake, amplifying the richness of flavors and texture. The subtlety of the jalapeño supplies the faintest pinch of spice, while the walnut adds a delicate, almost untraceable, layer of crunch.

While entrenched in a gnocchi-infused, foodie free-for-all, I seemed to have completely disregarded the fact that it was an appetizer – meant for sharing. Luckily, my dining companion was having a similar experience digging into the ricotta-stuffed Meatballs Riganato, two beautifully-seasoned, baseball-sized meatballs, lying in a sea of thick and tangy house-made tomato sauce.

I had no idea what to expect when I visited Riganato Old World Grille in Geneva for lunch on a Friday afternoon.

What I discovered was a cozy, fireplace-lit room with friendly staff serving fresh, high-quality, rustic Italian and Greek fare at a reasonable price. If you have a bucket list for dining in Kane County, make sure this place is somewhere near the top – it would be a shame to miss.

Open for lunch and dinner, Riganato’s menu has something for everyone.

Salads, burgers, sandwiches, paninis, kabobs, steaks, chops, chicken, seafood, extra-thin pizzas and pasta line its menu. Swimming common link for Rosary graduate Sykstus Right now, it’s all about paying attention to detail.

Most sports have breaks, but not many have the month-long break between the first and second halves of their seasons like collegiate swimming and diving does.

For University of Illinois swimmer Sarah Sykstus – a Batavia native and Rosary graduate – it’s all about using this long time off to her advantage, to pay attention to the details.

“You kind of looked back on how you did individually and how you did as a teammate and the team as a whole in the first half, and then you see what you can improve on in the second half,” Sykstus said. “You can recharge your batteries, you don’t have a meet for a while. It’s just all on cleaning up those details and just improving on things that you did in the first half.”

Sykstus and the Illini last competed Nov. 22. They won’t compete again until Jan. 16.

ON CAMPUS Vinnie Duber That’s almost two months between meets, something that might drive some a little stir-crazy.

But Sykstus and her teammates rely on one another to make it through the massive break in the middle of the season.

“It can be long, but at the same time it’s good because you’re just going to get back into training, you’re going to just focus on the pool, you’re going to focus on practicing,” she said. “Just focus on your details, just focusing on doing the best you can in practice. It can be hard staying focused, but you just rely on your teammates, rely on your coaches to get you through this time.”

Sykstus said the break is used to work on those little

things you always hear coaches talking about. The attention to detail is what could make the difference in a big second-half improvement.

“Just working on those details like those turns, my starts and just staying in the best possible shape I can. Just keeping up with all of the work that we focus on during the season. Just keeping my focus in practice,” Sykstus said.

Now a junior at Illinois, Sykstus has had plenty of time to get acclimated to the not-so-little details of her life outside the pool. Going from private Rosary to the largest public university in the state had the potential to be a real culture shock, not to mention the fact Rosary is an all-girls school.

But Sykstus found comfort where you’d expect, with the swim team. And it’s because of that she thinks there’s really not that much difference between the way things were

at Rosary and the way things are now in Champaign.

“The school, obviously, is a lot larger than Rosary. But I see my teammates every day, and that’s how it was back at Rosary,” she said. “Those are the girls – I live with all my teammates, and those are the girls I rely on outside at school and inside of the pool.

They’re my best friends, and that’s how it was at Rosary. I feel like that’s a big similarity between the two.

“But obviously in classes, it’s different. I have boys in my classes, and that’s not how it was at Rosary. But it’s the same here. My best friends are on the swim team, and that’s how it was at Rosary, as well.”

“He’s going to continue to improve and we’re going to be better because of it,” Poulin said. “He’s a great kid, positive attitude attitude, works hard every day and really wants to be on the floor. He doesn’t expect to just be given minutes. He’s trying to earn minutes every day, and we’re real proud of Griffin’s progress.”

Osborne, meanwhile, led North with 14 points, although 11 came when the game was out of hand in the fourth quarter.

While Osborne is capable of scoring in bunches, his shot selection and concerns about defense make him somewhat of an X-factor for the North Stars, although Poulin expressed confidence he can earn a more prominent role as the season unfolds.

“The more games we play, the better he’s going to be, and the more time we have in the gym practicing, the better he’ll be,” Poulin said. “We believe in him. … We believe he’s going to play a role for us as we go forward, we really do.”

Spartans’ football players making presence felt St. Francis made the deepest football playoff push of any area school, and with a big contingent of the basketball team having played for the Class 6A state semifinal football team, a challenging start to hoops season was to be expected.

But after Tuesday’s 61-41 win against Wheaton Academy, Spartans coach Bob Ward is detecting progress, especially from football transplants such as Mike Shaw, Steven Fassnacht, Will Purdom and Clint Bobowski.

“They’re kind of coming back,” Ward said. “You can see their legs are kind of coming back. That just gives us that much more depth.”

Bobowski, quarterback of St. Francis’ football team, is a coach-pleaser who takes his defensive and rebounding responsibilities to heart.

“He’s a program guy,” Ward said. “He really kind of gets what we’re trying to do.”

HITTING REWIND After starting the season 4-0, Batavia dealt with a double-dose of adversity last weekend, losing consecutive home games to Upstate Eight Conference River foes West Chicago and Geneva.

The Bulldogs, who have yet to play a road game this season, will try to rediscover their winning form with home games tonight against St. Charles East and Saturday against Streamwood.

St. Charles North boys basketball coach Tom Poulin acknowledged he didn’t quite see St. Charles East coming – at least not this early in the season.

The Saints have shined in the season’s early going, including posting a pair of double-digit victories over Poulin’s North Stars. The Saints are fresh off a dynamite weekend in which they won at two-time Upstate Eight Conference River champion Larkin before topping North, 72-62.

Poulin assigned a heaping portion of the credit for East’s success to senior point guard Cole Gentry.

“I didn’t think [East would start this strong] from what I saw in the offseason, but when you have someone like Cole, you should expect it,” Poulin said. “He’s a special player. He can get wherever he wants to on the floor and he’s a coach on the floor and he makes his teammates better.

“In high school basketball, a guard like that is as valuable as it gets. You can always zone a big guy and you can faceguard a shooter, but somebody that has the ball in his hands and runs the show can dominate a high school game, and that’s what he does each night out. He’s very impressive, and he does it with class.”

Gentry scored 24 points in the St. Charles rivals’ meeting during the Ron Johnson Thanksgiving tournament and added 21 points without playing the fourth quarter in Saturday’s rematch.

Preventing another such outburst will be the goal when North and East meet for a third time Jan. 17 at North, although minimizing Gentry’s scoring – and playmaking – is a vexing task, as Poulin’s squad has seen firsthand.

“He’s a very, very good basketball player, and it’s hard to limit how much he impacts the game,” Poulin said. “It’s very hard to kind of take him out of the equation from time to time. You want the ball out of his hands, but it’s hard to make that happen.”

Stephen Paea has been a bit of an oasis in this desert of a Bears season.

In his fourth year with the Bears after being drafted in the second round out of Oregon State, he easily has had his best season as a pro and arguably has been the Bears’ best defensive player.

And as the Bears’ luck would have it, he also is a free agent after this season. And whether it’s in Chicago or with another NFL club, Paea’s ship is about to come in.

We’re not talking silly money like what the Cubs’ Jon Lester or Paea’s teammate, Jay Cutler, recently received.

But Paea is going to sign a contract in March if not sooner that will allow him to set his family up for life, and it couldn’t happen to a nicer young man.

I had a chance to spend a little time with Paea on Tuesday evening as he came out to meet fans and sign autographs at the annual Northwest Herald and Chicago Football Toys for Tots drive in Vernon Hills.

Paea left no doubt about how he hopes his contract situation works out.

“I want to stay right here,” he told me. “Definitely, my family’s really comfortable here, I love my teammates, and I want to stay a Bear.”

But do the Bears want Paea back?

“Making those extra moves really helped solidify the direc-

tion I wanted to go, which was being a Chicago White Sox,” Robertson said Wednesday.

The Sox announced their four-year, $46 million deal Wednesday with the 30-year old Robertson, two days after the deal was made alongside the acquisition of Samardzija.

That side-by-side news rocked the winter meetings and seemed to instantly make the Sox look like contenders in the AL Central.

As you might expect, Robertson has bought into that notion.

While you have recommended volunteering, joining health clubs, going to church – and staying out of bars – something I have yet to see mentioned is a community-based arts organization.

Someone who is musically inclined might look for a local band, orchestra or community chorus.

But I’d like to put in a word for community theater. A person doesn’t have to be a performer; these groups need people to build sets, make costumes, locate props, run the backstage operations during a performance, etc. In the front of the house, they need people for promotion, selling tickets, and ushering and soliciting donations from sponsors.

I met my husband of 30-plus years through a community theater group, and know of several other long-term marriages that

Keeping your neck in neutral position should eliminate pain Dear Doctor K: I’m a woman in my late 40s, and I have mild but aggravating neck pain that flares up from time to time. Can you suggest simple changes I can make at home and at work that might help?

Dear Reader: There are many things you can do to minimize your risk of recurring neck pain.

Start by keeping your neck in a neutral position whether you are sitting or standing. That means your head should balance directly over your spine and not lean forward or be cocked to one side.

Here are some more tips: • At the computer or desk, keep your head balanced directly over your spine as much as possible.

Set your chair height so both your feet can rest on the ground, and sit with your buttocks far back in your chair, using a small pillow to support your lower back if needed.

That’s what I’m doing as I write this column at my desk at home. But it wasn’t always that way. Until recently, when I worked at home, I used my lightweight computer with its small screen. That small screen, plus my aging eyes, caused me to bend forward a lot to read what was on

When I told my wife that my neck was hurting, she said: “I think it’s because you don’t use a big flat screen at home like you do at work. You’re hunched over a lot.”

Also, when you’re working at your computer or doing any type of desk work, get up and move around every half-hour. (I’ve put a detailed illustration of proper desk posture on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

• When using a telephone, a headset, earbuds or speakerphone are good options to help keep your head in a neutral position for hands-free talking. Headsets are available for both your desk phone and cellphone.

• If you are sitting in a chair while reading, maintain an upright posture. Hold the book

so you don’t have to lean down or forward to see it.

• Avoid wearing high heels, which change the alignment of your entire body and stress neck muscles.

• Choose a lightweight purse or backpack, and don’t overload it. Use a backpack designed to put weight on your hips instead of just your upper back, and don’t sling it over one shoulder. With heavier loads, use a wheeled pack or briefcase. If you must use a shoulder purse, alternate which shoulder you use.

• If you drive long distances, periodic breaks can help to reduce or prevent neck strain.

• Sit far enough from a TV or movie screen that you can watch without tilting your head back.

Don’t sit off to the side, which forces you to turn your neck for long periods.

If you follow these simple suggestions, your neck pain should be considerably reduced, or even disappear.

Dear Teens: According to a study reported in the journal Pediatrics, more than 25 percent of teens engage in sexting, and those who send explicit photos are more likely to become sexually active a year later. But the study did not find a link between the sending of sexually explicit photos and texts and risky sexual behavior over time.

Pantone’s color of the year: Marsala

By JURA KONCIUS The Washington Post Take a look inside that bottle of marsala wine sitting in your bar you once bought for that Italian chicken recipe. That earthy, reddish-amber color is what Pantone has named its 2015 Color of the Year.

Marsala “enriches our mind, body and soul, exuding confidence and stability,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, in the announcement.

Unlike other “Colors of the Year” put out by paint companies, Pantone’s color forecasts are used across many industries besides home design and interiors, whether fashion, consumer products, graphics or packaging.

As a major color authority, Pantone charts corporate color direction.

So, what made it go with marsala? Pantone officials said the color is already big in clothing, handbags and wearables. And they believe it

goes well with warmer taupes and grays, and umber, golden yellow and turquoise.

So, what do color experts think of marsala?

“It’s nice, but it surprises me,” said color consultant Jean Molesworth Kee, owner of the Painted Room in Alexandria, Virginia. “We have been veering from red or burgundy wall color now for years. This has a dusky, earthy quality.”

Kee said she could see marsala used in “an ethnic bohemian place.”

She added, “It’s muted and it reminds me of Morocco or of faded old Oriental rugs. It would go nicely with warm, sandy colors and browns.”

I called another color expert who hadn’t yet heard the news.

“This name doesn’t sound good,” said Washington designer Annie Elliott, whose firm is called Bossy Color.

“You can pair it with hunter green and you can be right back in 1987. It is so depressing,” Elliott said. “I hate burgundy, and it doesn’t even have the guts of burgundy. It looks tired.

It already looks like it has been washed too many times. We are in for a rough year.”

Although many of the anointed colors are big in the paint department, marsala seems to be a strong hue that perhaps will show up more on upholstery, table linens and tableware, as well as in fabric prints, rather than on powder room walls.

One of my savvy colleagues said: “Marsala looked like a cute nail polish color. I can also imagine it as a lipstick. A bedroom? Not so much. But then, that’s why the Color of the Year changes annually.”
