Sign brings a little peace to Batavia

PARK DISTRICT DISH Kari Miller The holiday season is a busy time – the hustle and bustle of shopping for that perfect gift, family parties, school concerts, prepping your house for out-of-town guests, and the list goes on.

It’s so easy to get wrapped up in the stress of it all, but one local business owner wants Batavians to slow down and take a moment to think peaceful thoughts.

Craig Foltos, owner of Foltos Tonsorial Parlor, wanted to bring a little peace to downtown Batavia. He came up with an idea to add a piece of art to the pedestrian bridge that would also have a positive message.

“I see the bridge every day, and it needed some artwork,” Foltos said. “I wanted it to be something that would help put good thoughts in people’s heads. What better message than peace?”

Years ago, Foltos approached Chris Behmer, former Batavia Park District commissioner, about the project. After several years of conceptualizing, the park board gave the project a green light.

Foltos stepped up to bring the project to life, but he couldn’t do it alone.

He reached out to Terry McCarter and Jim Hagemann who helped cut and paint the letters, which took approximately 40 hours. Foltos

Every year since, the park district’s parks department has undertaken the great effort of installing the letters.

It takes three staff members a total of eight hours to install the 12-foot-tall letters in “Peace” and “Earth” and the 8-foot-tall letters in “On.” But the effect the sign has had on the community has been well worth the effort.

“I can’t tell you the num-

ber of people who tell me they love the sign,” Foltos said. “People use it on their Christmas cards, and you can regularly see people taking pictures of it.”

Earlier this year, Foltos spearheaded efforts in cooperation with the park district and city of Batavia to light the sign. Key players began brainstorming fundraising opportunities when an anonymous donor came forward to provide the lighting. The “Peace on Earth” sign was officially dedicated during the Celebration of Lights Festival on Dec. 1.

“I’ve wanted to put lights on it from day one, but this year we made it happen,” Foltos said. “The park district’s Executive Director Allison Niemela was instru-

mental in helping to light the sign. We couldn’t have done it without the help of the park district.”

This holiday season, take a moment to drive through downtown Batavia to appreciate the beauty of the Peace Bridge and what it represents.

“If the sign can make people think about peace for a little bit, that’s a good thing,” Foltos said. “It helps bring civility to the community, and it makes you feel better to think peaceful things.”

Sugar Grove resident competes on ‘Wheel’

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Dan Johnston of Sugar Grove was able to fulfill a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity earlier this year when he appeared on an episode of “Wheel of Fortune,” which aired last month.

“I’ve always loved that show,” he said. “I watched it all the time growing up, and I still watch it every night.”

The episode featuring Johnston aired Nov. 6. He said he started the process of becoming a contestant about a year ago, when he submitted an application.

After sending in a video explaining why he wanted to be on the show, he received an email in April inviting him to a private audition in Chicago, alongside about 70 people.

“They wanted to see how

energetic you were, how you called letters and if the letters made sense,” he said of the audition, which included a written portion. “They ended up sending about 50 people home, and they kept about 20 there.”

Johnston said the producers told the remaining contestants they could expect to receive a letter in the mail in the next two weeks if they’d been selected to go on the show.

He said the two-week mark came and went without getting a letter. But it arrived on the 15th day after the audition, he said.

“I was just so excited about it,” he said. “You can only be on that show one time in your life.”

In August, he flew to California with his wife and a friend to compete on “Wheel of Fortune.” Johnston said he’d always told himself that if he

ever competed on the show, he would try to be aggressive on the toss-up rounds.

He said on the very first toss-up round, though, he buzzed in and froze when game show host Pat Sajak called his name.

He said he also got hung up on the phrase, “passing the torch,” because he said he was too focused on figuring out the first word of the phrase, which he thought might have been “casting.”

“Well, it didn’t turn out as well as I had hoped for,” Johnston said of the game. “I really thought I’d do well on the show. I came in last out of everyone there, but I won $3,400, so I’m happy I got something out of it.”

“Pat Sajak was really nice,” he said. “After each round, he said, ‘Dan, hang in there.

You’re doing really good.’ ”

Police: Gaffey arrested after violating order of protection

By CHRISTI WARREN cwarren@shawmedia.com STERLING – A former superintendent of the Illinois Juvenile Prison Schools was arrested last week after he violated an order of protection filed against him by the mother of his 2-year-old daughter, police said.

Kye Gaffey, 41, of Sterling, was arrested at his home at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Sterling Police Detective J.D. Sanders said, and was given notice to appear.

Sanders said he couldn’t comment on what that violation was specifically.

Also last week, Gaffey was charged with disorderly conduct, a misdemeanor, for an alleged altercation that occurred between him and his daughter’s mother, Nicole Dettman, on April 28.

It was this event that originally sparked Dettman to obtain an emergency order of protection against him.

According to court docu-

ments, just after 6 p.m. April 28, Gaffey and Dettman had a fight that stemmed from a comment about an improperly installed car seat, culminating with Gaffey entering Dettman’s home.

When Dettman, holding their daughter, Kye Gaffey asked him to leave, Gaffey instead moved to within 6 to 8 inches of her and, “pointing his finger in an aggressive manner,” said, “You’re going

to be [expletive] sorry. I’m going to put you in the [expletive] ground if you keep making me look like a stalker.”

He then left the home.

In 2009, Gaffey was named athletic director at Dixon High School, where he had been assistant principal for four years.

He was athletic director for a year before becoming principal at Auburn High School in Rockford.

Near the end of his first year, the school board voted to dismiss him, but wouldn’t say why. He was the fourth principal to serve within two

school years.

Until recently, Gaffey was the superintendent of the Illinois Juvenile Prison Schools.

He was fired in August after being arrested with his wife, Jennifer, 42, of Sterling, in St. Charles on misdemeanor charges of trespass and criminal damage.

Police said that he and Jennifer went to her ex-husband’s house to check on the living conditions of Jennifer’s son.

According to police reports, a neighbor reported the Gaffeys were inside the house while the family was away on

vacation.

Jennifer Gaffey’s ex-husband later filed an emergency order of protection against the two.

Kye Gaffey has since been accepted into Kane County’s pretrial diversion program.

After paying a $570 fee, serving 50 hours of community service and refraining from being charged with any other crime for nine months, his charges will be dismissed.

It’s unclear whether last week’s Whiteside County charges will affect his enrollment in the program.

Board approves coroner’s budget request

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Following the Kane County Board’s unanimous approval Tuesday of his request for extra funds, Coroner Rob Russell said he was disappointed that Chairman Chris Lauzen took the opportunity to misrepresent and “browbeat” him.

“It just shows his ignorance of what it is we do,” Russell said.

The board approved amending the 2013 fiscal budget by about $88,000 to cover short-

falls in the areas of autopsies, toxicology, overtime and fuel costs.

But before the vote Lauzen presented several slides addressing such topics as the coroner’s budget for the next three years, the recent mishap with a morgue freezer and ideas for moving forward.

Quoting from multiple newspaper articles about the broken freezer, Lauzen criticized Russell for using the late November incident as a way to advance his budget position.

Four Batavia firefighters hurt in blaze

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Four Batavia firefighters suffered minor injuries fighting a house fire Tuesday morning at 308 S. Harrison St. Three of the firefighters were treated at the scene, and one was treated at a local hospital and released. The firefighters were hurt after a fall inside the house, Batavia Deputy Fire Chief Randy Banker said.

“One was on a ladder, and the other three were working on the stairs below,” Banker said.

All of the occupants in the house were able to get out safely.

However, the owner was treated at the scene for a minor injury after ceiling material fell on him as he was escaping from the house, Banker said.

The fire caused an estimated $175,000 in damage and left the house uninhabitable.

“It is a total loss,” Banker said.

Six people were in the house at the time of the fire, he said.

When firefighters arrived at the scene at 5:47 a.m., the single-family home was fully engulfed, with fire on all three floors and through the roof.

“There was a significant amount of fire,” Banker said.

Firefighters had the blaze under control at 6:30 a.m. The origin and cause of the fire is under investigation, Banker said.

In his slides, Lauzen said preventive maintenance rather than publicity could have been Russell’s primary focus.

He asserted a year is enough time to inventory equipment and perform maintenance.

Russell said he is sorry the broken freezer caused a black eye to the county, but he doesn’t intend to conceal the conditions.

“We’re done hiding behind things that aren’t true,” he said. “I’m not going to hide behind some facade.”

Moving forward, Lauzen listed several proposals, including reevaluating the cost of autopsies, reviewing autopsies and defining the coroner’s investigation role with law enforcement.

Russell said he has nothing to hide regarding the autop-

sies, because the reasons for each are documented.

“If they want to challenge me on that, that’s fine,” Russell said.

Ex-student, Marmion settle lawsuit

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com AURORA – A lawsuit against Marmion Academy in Aurora for injuries a student suffered when a science experiment went awry was settled this month for an undisclosed sum, court records show.

Zachary Bennett of Aurora, now 19 and a former student, sued earlier this year for injuries he suffered May 11, 2011, when he slipped and fell on his face during a science experiment. The complaint was amended to correct the year of the incident, which was incorrectly stated as 2010.

The parties settled this month. Kane County Circuit Judge James Murphy dismissed the case with prejudice Thursday, meaning no further action can be brought.

“All matters of dispute between the parties … [have] been satisfactorily compromised and settled,” Murphy wrote in his stipulation and order to dismiss. His order also noted that both parties agreed that the suit be dismissed.

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Batavia police are asking for the public’s help in identifying a man who was trespassing at the Batavia Government Center early Saturday after breaking a glass door to gain entry.

Batavia Crime-Stoppers posted a video of the man on its Facebook page.

At 3:28 a.m., the man smashed a wooden Christmas decoration through a locked glass door on the building’s south side that leads into

the Batavia City Council chambers, Batavia Detective Sgt. Shawn Mazza said.

The Batavia Government Center is at 100 N. Island Ave., next to the Batavia Riverwalk.

The video shows the man walking through the lobby near the City Council chambers and going up to the building’s second floor.

The man then is seen fleeing the building through an eastside door.

“One of the officers came out to see what was going on after being notified by the records clerk,” Mazza said. “He ran southbound from

the municipal complex onto the foot bridge.”

Police were not able to locate the man, Mazza said.

Police do not know the man’s motive because nothing was taken from the building, Mazza said.

The Batavia Police Department is offering a $50 incentive to the first person who positively identifies the man.

Those who have information can leave a message on the Batavia Crime-Stoppers Facebook page or call the department’s investigations division at 630-454-2500.

She was a graduate of Orchard Park High School and later attended and graduated from Valparaiso University in Indiana, where her studies were concentrated in pre-med and philosophy. While at Valparaiso, she joined the Alpha Phi Delta sorority.

She actively was engaged in research when she married James (Jim) Hoelscher, who preceded her in death. She also was preceded in death by her parents; and sister, Joan of Foxboro, Mass.

She is survived by daughter, Stephanie (Steve) of Montpelier, Vt.; Robert (Susan) of Lakewood, Colo.; and Stewart (Nancy) of Naperville. She has five loving grandchildren, Winslow, Caitlin, Alexander, Samuel and Oliver. Her brother, Robert, of upstate New York also survives her.

After living in St. Louis and Kansas City, she and her family moved to Batavia in 1969. She served as the director for Keeler School in Aurora, a facility for developmentally disabled children. She then began her extended career in the auto sales business, which

ended with employment at Lexus of Naperville, where she worked up until 12 months before her death.

She was dedicated to her clients, providing personal attention to the customers’ desires and tirelessly assuring that each sale was a rewarding experience for the customer. She had a loyal client base in which all her sales were derived from referrals or repeat customers.

A lifelong lover of the arts, she was devoted to the study of archeology, history, science, architecture and her beloved and ever evolving garden, where she always sought to try different plants and designs.

She was ever eager to share whatever knowledge or experience with others. She was a very active member of her church.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 21, at Calvary Episcopal Church, 222 S. Batavia Ave., Batavia.

Randy Swikle, who has been a newspaper adviser at Johnsburg High School, said those benefits have helped draw today’s students to student journalism. Swikle is a member of the Illinois Press Foundation and Northern Illinois Newspaper Association boards. In the classroom, he said, he could tell which students had taken journalism “just by the questions they would ask.” He said the skills they acquire would be helpful in any occupation, and there also is the opportunity to make a meaningful impact.

Swikle said, adding that students can learn to be more discriminant readers and recognize the most important information.

“It’s part of what journalism does – provide analytical skills and research skills. …

How do you go about getting information? This is more than the kind of research you are going to get from going to a library. In journalism, much of your research has to be original. You have to get to the source and ask great questions so you can get a great story.”

At St. Charles East, Smith said that is the real eye-opener – some students get nervous when they learn they have to conduct interviews.

“I think that when they do stick with it, they’re going to get a really great experience,” Smith said, adding that sometimes “they come in, and they want to make up horoscopes,

and unless you are some kind of astrologer and you want to make charts, no.”

Those who stay, she said, can improve their research skills and have a positive experience.

Kaneland Krier adviser Kim Reese credited her predecessor, Laurie Erdmann, with doing much to help the organization at her school.

Reese said students typically will come up with story ideas that are relevant to fellow students. Last week, students were working on stories about self-taken photos or “selfies,” and bus safety. She said administrators have been helpful and supportive.

“It’s an outstanding program,” she said.

Students said they have enjoyed it. Maddy McDermot, a sophomore from Elburn, said “it’s been better than I thought it would be. We’re like a big family in here.”

Michael B. Semmens, 21, of the 500 block of Bradbury Lane, also was charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and leaving the scene of an accident.

resident – told police that he was driving east on West Main Street near Corporate Reserve Boulevard at about 4:20 a.m. Sunday when he saw a car rapidly approaching from behind.

The car driven by Semmens – a blue 2006 Honda Civic – was found, parked and unoccupied, with heavy front-end damage about a half-mile east on the 2900 block of West Main Street, police reported.

Geneva police reportedly located Semmens in Geneva with his parents and brought him to the St. Charles Police Department. Semmens refused field sobriety tests and a breath test, police reported, adding he smelled of alcohol and his eyes were glassy and red.

The report indicated he was released on a personal recognizance bond and is expected at the Kane County Judicial Center on Jan. 8.

Michael Francis Gruesen, of the 0-100 block of Stirrup Cup Court, St. Charles, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving with a blood-alcohol content of more than 0.08 percent and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Police responded to the 1300 block of Fox Chase Boulevard in St. Charles at about 10:53 p.m. for a report of a 2012 Honda Accord with major damage in a resident’s

yard, police said, noting the horn wouldn’t shut off.

According to reports, the car was heading south on the 1000 block of Keim Trail when it left the road, hit a mailbox, hit a stop sign and Michael hit the curb Francis of Fox Chase Gruesen Boulevard before coming to a stop in the yard.

The yard was reportedly torn up from the vehicle.

Gruesen had no obvious injuries, police reported.

Gruesen was released on his own recognizance and is expected at the Kane County Judicial Center at 1:30 p.m.

Elburn voters in 2011 approved a referendum giving the village the authority to negotiate such agreements on their behalf. Following the end of the first program in 2012, the village again went to bid and selected a two-year term with FirstEnergy at a fixed rate of

4.72 cents per kilowatt hour.

In comparison, ComEd’s rate was 6.005 cents per kilowatt hour in November. In the program’s first two years, participating Elburn households have saved an average of $474 in electric supply costs, with a cumulative villagewide savings of $864,000, officials said.

“We will be over $1 million at the end of August in cumulative savings,” Elburn Village President Dave Anderson said.

“We can save people money without any cost involved.”

To date, 2,200 households

participate in the program as well as a few small businesses, Anderson said. New residents are not automatically enrolled in the program, but can join at any time by calling FirstEnergy at 888-651-5200.

There is no fee to join or leave the program.

Those who are enrolled with other suppliers first should check with their current supplier to determine whether they would be subject to any early termination fee before joining the village’s program.

ST. CHARLES – The city has begun annual maintenance on residential sanitary sewers.

The sewer lines will be repaired – if necessary, cleaned and have liners installed. Work will be performed by contractor Hoerr Construction and is expected to be completed by March.

Residents might experience temporary inconveniences during this project. The curing time requires eight to 10 hours, during which the sewer service to homes or businesses will be sealed off at the public main.

Limiting wastewater while the service is off line will help assure a better final product

and also reduce the risk of sewer backups, the city said in a news release. Residents will be notified 24 to 48 hours in advance if their service will be offline. For information, call Mike Burnett at 630-377-4405.

Township officials ponder options for McNair field lease

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com BLACKBERRY TOWN SHIP – Blackberry Township officials hope to renegotiate a lease for McNair field so more than 700 youth baseball and football players can continue to use it – and then they plan to try to buy the five acres for their permanent use.

Township officials said at their meeting Tuesday that they will schedule a special meeting possibly Jan. 2 to discuss the issues and then meet with the property owners before their first regular meeting of the new year on Jan. 14.

“I think we should have a meeting, come up with a decision and make them an offer,” township trustee Harley Veldhuizen said.

“If they are not interested in selling, then we would do this [lease] as a short-term objective and then move toward acquisition of other property – possibly the property immediately south,” township trustee Jim Michels said.

The lease for the five acres the youths have played on for 10 years expired April 30, Supervisor Dennis Ryan said, before he took office May 20.

The lease with property owners Transmission Relay Corporation of Burr Ridge, charged the township $1 a year for the youths to use the property, officials said, but none of the rent checks were

ever cashed.

The low rate for the lease was connected to a sales agreement from the property’s previous owner, whose children were involved in baseball.

The previous owner wanted a portion of the property reserved for athletic purposes, officials said.

Before the township meeting, Ryan met with county board member Drew Frasz, R-Elburn, and representatives of the youth baseball and football players to discuss their concerns regarding the lack of a lease for the next season’s play schedule.

Ryan said he and highway commissioner Rod Feece met with the property owners last month to break the ice and start negotiations. Before they met last month, Ryan said all discussion was between their lawyers.

“The discussion was cordial,” Ryan said. “They said they would not consent to any football activity ... No football any time, for practice or games.”

The youth football program has used a portion of the property for practice.

Eric Marler, vice president of Kaneland Youth Football and secretary of Elburn Youth Baseball, said their aversion to football could be related to worries about injuries.

“You can get hit with a bat and have the same damage, the same liability,” Marler said.

Aldermen hear plans for Thomle building

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Aldermen at Tuesday’s Joint Committee of the Whole meeting heard two proposals for the redevelopment of the city-owned Thomle building in downtown Batavia.

The city has been exploring whether to sell the building at 2 E. Wilson St. in downtown Batavia. Since 1997, the city has owned the historical building, which was built in 1876.

St. Charles-based Corcoran Commercial Real Estate presented aldermen with its proposal to acquire the Thomle building and combine it with the 4-6 E. Wilson St. building to develop restaurant space on the first floor and five apartments on the upper levels.

“We can attract the type of operator that will bring more

people into the downtown,” Ryan Corcoran of Corcoran Commercial Real Estate, told aldermen. “It might serve as an anchor to bring more people downtown.”

Plans include for the restaurant to have a 1,500-square-foot deck that would overlook the Fox River along with three apartments on the second floor and two apartments on the third floor.

Corcoran is seeking financial assistance from the city, but the amount of assistance has not yet been disclosed.

Aldermen also heard a proposal from Michael Grudecki, president of Vignette Home Decor in Batavia. to turn the city-owned Thomle building in downtown Batavia into an upscale establishment, Tini Lounge, that will specialize in martinis.

Grudecki said the establishment would create ex-

citement in the downtown.

He said his proposal would be privately funded.

“Downtown Batavia is lacking what Geneva and St. Charles already have – a lot of people downtown,” he told aldermen.

The city in the past has rented the Thomle building to businesses at a reduced rate to encourage new businesses into the downtown.

The latest business, Simonetti Studios, last year moved from the Thomle building to a second-story loft space at 30 Shumway Ave. Grudecki’s plan also includes renting out the building’s lower level to another tenant.

“I want to keep the incubator space to give other businesses the same opportunity,” he said.

Aldermen plan to discuss the proposals in January.

Gun research shows which behaviors can put others at risk BLOOMBERG NEWS Some people, according to the federal government, are more dangerous than others.

Among those so designated are convicted felons, fugitives, drug addicts and people prone to domestic violence. All are prohibited, under federal law, from owning a gun.

The government’s power to restrict gun ownership has limits. At the same time, authorities have an obligation to protect society from the scourge of gun violence.

And as it turns out, the list of People Who Should Not Be Allowed to Possess a Gun might be inadequate.

That’s one conclusion from a new study that identifies specific criteria that increase a person’s risk of committing gun violence.

Being convicted of a violent misdemeanor is one, for instance. As are two or more convictions in five years for drunk driving or drug possession. And so is being subject to a temporary restraining order for domestic violence (the federal standard is a permanent restraining order).

What to do with such data?

The researchers, a collection of gun violence scholars at major universities who call themselves the Consor-

tium for Risk-Based Firearm Policy, recommend temporary prohibitions on gun possession of up to 10 years for anyone who matches one of the risk profiles. (Similarly, they call for a temporary prohibition on gun possession by anyone who recently has been hospitalized involuntarily – another sizable risk factor.)

By restricting access to firearms for everyone in the designated groups, the consortium contends, lives will be saved. Yet it also is true that such restrictions would inhibit the constitutional rights of very many people who never would commit gun violence.

So is the loss of individual rights worth the increase in public safety?

Possibly. More important, at this juncture, is to debate the question. For too long, research into gun violence has been starved of funds by legislators beholden to the gun lobby. Mayors Against Illegal Guns, co-founded

by Bloomberg LP founder Michael Bloomberg, has estimated that public research funding for gun violence prevention is about $2 million annually. In 2011, for comparison’s sake, the National Institutes of Health spent $21 million studying headaches.

More research can help connect the dots on gun

violence, identifying risk patterns. As evidence accumulates, Americans can weigh specific choices – whether to restrict gun rights for repeat drunk drivers, for instance, or to accept the increase in the risk of gun violence that such drivers represent.

Guns are a prime artifact and symbol of a fierce culture war. But perhaps not every issue concerning guns must be so contentious. As researchers – and voters – gain more knowledge about the ways and means of gun violence, there is reason to hope that more choices can be illuminated by facts and more decisions made by consensus.

Kaneland Youth Orchestra to present holiday concert SUGAR GROVE – It’s not that the members of the Kaneland String Ensemble and the Kaneland Prep Strings haven’t performed in public.

The middle and elementary school students have been featured at various community events, most recently last weekend’s Holiday in the Grove in Sugar Grove and Monday’s School District 302 Board meeting at Harter Middle School.

But Dec. 19 will mark the first holiday concert presented by the Kaneland Youth Orchestra, a Sugar Grove-based nonprofit that aims to provide string education to youth in Kaneland.

Directed by Andrea LaFranzo, the concert is set for 7 p.m. in the Harter Middle School cafetorium. Admission is free.

“She just loves music,” Burroughs said, noting the girl’s grandfather played fiddle.

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com WEST CHICAGO – Forced into a passive mode offensively for much of the night, Josh Ruggles finally had enough.

The Wheaton Academy junior 3-point sniper was face-guarded all over the floor throughout Tuesday night’s game against St. Francis, and if that weren’t agitating enough, Ruggles said some late-game trash talking at the free throw line further emboldened him to act.

With the score tied and a little more than 1:30 to play in the fourth quarter, Ruggles knifed to the baseline and swished a pull-up, short jumper for the go-ahead basket in the Warriors’ eventual 59-55 win against the rival Spartans.

The basket put Wheaton Academy on top, 54-52, and the Warriors led the rest of the way.

“I just was thinking attack, and see if we could get something,” Ruggles said. “I think we were at the bonus at that point, and they’re calling those fouls more, so I was thinking I either get to the line, or worst case scenario I just kick it out and we set it back up.”

Extreme patience was called for on Ruggles’ part based on the way the Spartans elected to defend him.

Ruggles, who won an international 3-point shooting competition earlier this year, has become accustomed to extra defensive attention, but said the Spartans “took it to more of an extreme than other teams have,” with St. Francis guards Kevin Blank and Nick Fabianski leading the charge.

Ruggles attempted only one 3-point shot on the night and scored half of his eight points from the foul line but said he’s fine with being guarded that way since it creates openings for teammates.

“He’s not going to force anything, and that’s a good thing and a bad thing, because he needs to get some shots off,” Warriors coach Pete Froedden said. “As a result of people guarding him the way they guard him, we

Wheaton Academy (5-2, 1-0 SCC Blue) led, 44-37, entering the fourth quarter but the Spartans (2-3, 1-1 SCC Blue) tied the game three times in the quarter, including 52-all on a pair of Jason Sullivan free throws with 1:53 to play.

But Ruggles’ shot and late production from guard Christian Smith helped the Warriors salt the win away.

Wheaton Academy made 9 of its 10 free throws in the final quarter.

Trailing at the half, Wheaton Academy moved ahead courtesy of a 12-3 burst in the third quarter that put the Warriors up, 40-35.

Ten players scored for the deep Warriors, led by 14 points from 6-foot-8 senior Gordon Behr and 13 points from the 6-10 Fuzak, a junior.

Behr and Fuzak also combined for 17 rebounds and helped limit the production of Spartans forward Kilian Brown, a capable interior scorer who gave up several inches in the paint.

“We’re long,” Froedden said. “You’re going to have to score over guys. And we’re just learning how to not foul with our length.”

St. Francis senior Zach Prociuk scored his team’s first nine points, helping the Spartans start the game on solid footing.

The Spartans maintained a modest lead for most of the opening half and led 29-25 at the break. Prociuk finished with a game-high 17 points and tied the game twice in the fourth quarter.

“He’s one of our senior

leaders,” Spartans coach Bob Ward said. “He’s a football kid and he’s really been working hard on his offensive game.

He scuffled a little bit in some of our early ones but he really came out tonight and he was really impressive all over the floor, defensively and offensively.”

Adam Hart and Sullivan scored 11 each for the Spartans while junior Michael Shaw (10) gave the visitors a fourth double-digit scorer.

Fuzak and his brother, 6-7 sophomore Bennett, are in their first seasons at Wheaton Academy. The brothers, who recently moved to Geneva, were previously homeschooled.

“Coach Froedden, he’s given me a lot of things to really think about, so I’ve just been eating it up,” Chandler Fuzak said. “I’ve been doing what he tells me to, and it’s giving me success and the team success.”

What was your mindset against Geneva?

I just trusted my teammates, and when I trust my team-

mates, all I can do is have fun, put a smile on my face and trust that I’m going to do what I know how to do. And that’s what I try to do, and it came out be our game [Friday].

What have you liked about the girls/boys doubleheader format?

It’s just fun. The Batavia-Geneva rivalry is something that you’ll never get back. I can’t even begin to explain. Even when people are yelling and stuff and you’re on the floor, no one is a part of a rivalry like this.

It’s very special. So to play in a game like this, then with the boys, we get to support them since they’re supporting us. It’s just a really cool feeling.

“They all wanted to be there,” Dennis said. “It wasn’t like they were forced to. When they showed me the tour, there were kids in the weight room when they didn’t have to be, kids running sprints when they didn’t have to be, so it shows everyone is really committed to the program and winning.”

In the short term, Dennis’ zeal for winning applies to what he anticipates being a bounce-back spring for the North Stars in 2014.

North had an uncharacteristically lukewarm season last year, and North Stars leaders such as Kansas State recruit Cory Wright and Dennis are determined to avoid a repeat next season.

The 5-foot-10, 190-pound Dennis swung one of the few reliable sticks for a quiet North offense.

“I hated that,” Dennis said of North’s struggles last year. “It was a rough way to end the year, but it’s not how this year is going to happen. We’ve got a lot

of work to do and we know it, and I think that bad taste really set a fire under everyone that we need to go out and win the conference this year and go deep in the playoffs.”

If the North Stars improve, other North players could soon be on Richardson’s radar. Dennis said he expects Richardson to keep close tabs on the St. Charles area from a recruiting standpoint in the coming years.

Liza Fruendt made an imprint on a big weekend for Batavia, leading the team in scoring in Upstate Eight Conference River Division home wins Friday and Saturday. Her 31 points in Friday’s victory against Geneva helped the Bulldogs defeat the Vikings for the first time in six seasons while starting Fruendt on a path that earned her accolades as The Kane County Chronicle-St. Charles Bank & Trust Athlete of the Week. The following is an edited transcript of a conversation between Chronicle sports reporter Kevin Druley and Fruendt:

St. Charles North senior Jack Dennis is glad to know there will be at least one familiar face when he arrives at Tiffin University next year.

In fact, that friendly face is the main reason Dennis chose the Division II school in Ohio.

Dennis, a first baseman/ corner outfielder for the North baseball program, will reunite with former North Stars assistant coach Jim Richardson, a new assistant at Tiffin. Richardson orchestrated Dennis’ recruitment.

“I’ve known [Richardson] since, I want to say, early freshman year,” Dennis said. “I started taking hitting lessons with him, and the bond just grew. I loved his coaching style, so when I heard he went to the college level, first of all I was sad because I didn’t have him as a coach anymore, and then I was like ‘Oh, I might have a place to play.’ ” Richardson worked under North head coach Todd Genke from 2007 to 2012 before spending a year as an assistant coach at Judson University, then moving on to Tiffin.

Dennis committed to Tiffin last month after visiting the school in October. His observations of the Dragons’ players on the visit helped convince Dennis to

For the first 16 minutes of Tuesday’s Northern Illinois Big 12 East girls basketball game against Rochelle, VanBogaert would have preferred to hear “mulligan” instead.

VanBogaert missed each of her first-half field goal attempts as the Knights sloughed to a tie at the break. By the time Kaneland emerged with a 44-38 victory, however, VanBogaert boasted the hot hand and the key shot – a 3-pointer midway through the final quarter that provided precious breathing room.

“My confidence inside, I knew I could do it,” VanBogaert said. “After missing all those shots, I had to pick myself back up. I had to make some.”

Kaneland (4-4, 1-1 NI Big 12 East) snapped a two-game skid by holding off a game effort from Rochelle (4-5, 1-1).

With Hubs forwards Ally Gould (13 points, 12 rebounds) and Lauren Murphy (12 points) playing effectively in the paint, the Knights worked to make even the slightest difference down low.

VanBogaert did her part with 11 rebounds, while senior center Kelly Wallner added 10 points and seven boards.

Wallner had four of her points at the free-throw line, including three in the final 21.6 seconds that iced the game.

“I was just focusing on what I do in practice,” Wallner said. “My coach [Ernie Colombe] tells me just keep your shot the same. Don’t worry about the score, worry about the free throw. So that’s what I was doing.”

points), point guard Caroline Heimerdinger (seven) and shooting guard Amber Winquist-Bailey (six). This time, the Knights brought the defense to match.

Kaneland charged to a 21-point first quarter in Saturday’s matinee loss to Antioch before stumbling to score 25 points the rest of the game against the Sequoits.

That combo proved especially frustrating given Colombe’s early outlook for a team that seemed more offensive-minded than past groups. Remaining consistent is an overarching goal each season, and with a 10-day layoff facing the Knights before their opener in the Ottawa Tournament, the concern isn’t going away.

“Just go hard at practice and work every day,” VanBogaert said.

Rochelle finished 15 of 41 (37 percent) from the field and was 8 for 16 from the line.

Kaneland’s 10-for-19 freethrow effort effectively was a wash and its 30 percent showing from the field trailed the Hubs, but the Knights had two 3-pointers to Rochelle’s zero.

Something had to give in a physical matchup, right?

“The difference in the game was hitting shots,” Hubs coach Tony Rowan said.

“We missed a lot of good opportunities where they made a lot of good opportunities.”

Van Bogaert, who scored the first four points of the second half as part of a 7-0 run, especially likes that last part.

“I think this is good that we went through that,” she said. “It builds us up.”

BATAVIA – The Batavia girls basketball team held off scrappy Larkin on Tuesday to take a 62-42 Upstate Eight Conference River Division victory.

“It was one we needed to get and be confident with,” said Batavia coach Kevin Jensen. “I think we had some real nice stretches, but I think we we had some times where we needed to be a little more focused and have a little more effort.”

The Bulldogs (6-1, 3-0 UEC River) scored the first 11 points of the game. Larkin scored its first basket at the 4:20 mark on a jump shot by Haley Casebeer.

“It wasn’t our best game,” Fruendt said. “But it was good effort by everyone.”

Larkin (1-5, 0-2) rallied in the third quarter and outscored the Bulldogs, 13-8.

The Royals closed the gap to 12 points (38-26) on two Victoria Patterson free throws. The senior guard scored 16 points for Larkin.

The quarter ended with the Bulldogs ahead, 42-28.

The Batavia starters watched the first half of the third quarter from the bench as Jensen wanted to give his bench more playing experience.

“It was good to get our full squad a lot of minutes since we have nine games in the next two and a half weeks,” Jensen said.

Vikings coach Sarah Meadows pledged her team would “kind of shy away” from Bloom’s fast-paced style in long stretches. She was hoping Geneva could slow things down one night earlier.

“We’re getting looks, we just can’t make a basket,” Meadows said. “Part of that is, I think, we’ve got two passes and we take a shot. Three passes and we take a shot. I think that we can get a better shot ... maybe we wait, and we’re a little more patient, and we get [a hot shooter an open shot], and then we get more success right there.”

they help us improve. It’s fun to play in those tournaments, because you get to play teams that you don’t always see, so it’s different competition.”

Kaneland visits LaSalle-Peru in its regularly scheduled NI Big 12 road crossover in February.

As a champion of chivalry, Sly gets the appropriateness of the whole “ladies irst” thing. But opening doors isn’t the same as scheduling basketball games, so here’s to giving the girls the second slot in some of these conference doubleheaders once in a while.

St. Charles East coach Lori Drumtra tested herself upon hearing five of her players scored in double figures during Saturday’s 72-68 win at St. Charles North.

As she scanned her memory, one of the first Saints Drumtra identified was the last player to accomplish the feat in order of appearance.

Senior reserve guard MacKenzie Meadows scored 10 of her 13 points in the first half, striking most often with smooth jumpers around the baseline and elbow.

“She gave us a little bit of a spark off the bench there at the beginning of the game when we were a little bit tight.

And I’m sure that North, their adrenaline was flowing, which I kind expected,” Drumtra said. “She came in and really gave us a nice lift.”

Sophomore Hannah Vitkus added 10 points off the bench, the only other nonstarter to reach double figures.

By MATT PUTTIN mputtin@shawmedia.com A new fieldhouse project is underway at Waubonsee Community College, and is expected to significantly upgrade the Sugar Grove school’s athletic facilities.

The $19 million, 59,000-square-foot fieldhouse broke ground Friday.

“This was one of the projects we had outlined in our 2020 College Master Plan,” Waubonsee assistant director of marketing and communications Stephanie Wennmacher said.

The 59,000-square-foot facility will support Waubonsee’s athletic programs, credit and noncredit physical education, wellness instruction and general recreation for students and the community.

“The fieldhouse will be a great facility, not only for our student-athletes, but for our student body and the community at large,” Wennmacher said.

Features of the fieldhouse include three indoor courts.

Two will have traditional athletic flooring, while the third will have artificial turf to accommodate soccer, baseball and softball practices for Waubsonee’s athletic programs.

The second floor will feature a three-lane suspended running track, along with a 2,500-square-foot fitness/ dance studio with its own sound system.

The fieldhouse will be connected to the east side of existing Erickson Hall, with a new main entrance and lobby providing access to both buildings.

The project will include renovations to Erickson Hall, including the addition of an athletic team workout room, an upgraded athletic training room, new locker rooms and a remodeled athletic study hall.

Designed by Cordogan, Clark & Associates, the fieldhouse is expected to open in early 2015.

Moments later, his face lit up with a smile.

Meet Adam Podlesh, the Bears’ new kickstand.

Previously, Podlesh had served as the Bears’ punter.

He had booted 225 punts in 44 games with the Bears after notching 229 punts in 59 games with Jacksonville.

But the Bears did not need Podlesh to punt Monday against the Dallas Cowboys. Every possession on offense except the last led to long, sustained drives that ended with points.

Hey, at least Podlesh was able to serve as the holder for field goals and extra points.

“I have a text message from my dad,” Podlesh said as he dressed in front of his locker after the game. “He said, ‘Great holds out there.

I’m sure your punts in warmups were great.’ ” Well, were they?

“Yeah, actually,” Podlesh said with a shrug. “I had a pretty good day. Not that it counts, but yeah, I felt comfortable going out there.”

Games can be unpredictable, and punters never know how much or how little they might be needed.

But the odds of a zero-punt performance are miniscule – it had not happened to Podlesh since Sept. 19, 2010, with the Jaguars – so he and long snapper Patrick Mannelly stayed ready

every time the offense took the field.

By the fourth quarter, Podlesh started to wonder whether he might post a goose egg.

“I didn’t want to jinx it,” Podlesh said. “But it seemed as though that was going on.”

Kind of like baseball players keeping quiet in the late innings of a no-hitter?

“I don’t know if it’s the same thing as pitching a no-hitter,” Podlesh said with a laugh.

OK. That explains why teammates did not mob Podlesh at the end of the game.

If the Bears go the rest of the season without needing Podlesh to punt, he won’t complain a lick. He told his teammates as much after the game.

“I actually told Josh [McCown], ‘Hey, if we do that the next three weeks, that’s fine with me,’ ” Podlesh said. “As long as we get W’s.”

Whether Lynch really is among college football’s elite remains up for debate among those who wonder whether the talented quarterback would put up such mind-blowing numbers if he played in a bigger conference.

But this much is true: Lynch isn’t shying away from the competition.

“I’m going there to win,” Lynch said. “I’m not going there to come in last or to second place. I’m going there to win.”

Lynch’s phone hasn’t stopped ringing since Carey called Monday afternoon.

Among those who called Monday night was former NIU coach Jerry Kill, who was out recruiting when the announcement was made and didn’t learn that Lynch was heading to New York until about 11 p.m.

He then proceeded to call Lynch’s phone 12 times. The two finally spoke Tuesday morning.

Lynch said Tuesday he would trade the trip to New York in a minute for a chance to play in the Fiesta Bowl. The loss admittedly still stings.

But being recognized for a body of work that has landed him among college football’s best is sure to be a weekend Lynch never will forget.

Lynch said the enormity of the accomplishment might not even hit him until he’s on a plane to New York.

Hopefully, his mom keeps her phone charged.

DeKALB – Jordan Lynch’s Heisman Trophy game of phone tag began at 4:45 p.m.

Monday.

That’s when Northern Illinois coach Rod Carey called his senior star quarterback and asked, if he wasn’t busy this weekend, if he’d have a problem jetting off to New York as one of six finalists for college football’s biggest individual honor.

Tag. You’re it Jordan Lynch.

Being the good son he is, Lynch decided to include his mother, Sheila, on the game.

He called her cellphone while she was at work. No answer.

Called again. Nothing. Called again. Still no mom. How’s a kid supposed to pass on what’s perhaps the biggest news of his life – or at least his college football career – if his mom’s cellphone battery is dead?

“There’s no point in having a cellphone these days,” Lynch said Tuesday. “I told my ma, I called her 100 times.

So she kind of gets it for not picking up the phone and charging it.”

Lynch placed a call to his dad Jim’s cellphone. Nothing. No answer. Really? He tried again, his frustration with his parents’ cellphone habits quickly mounting. No one picked up.

“I don’t know what [my dad’s] deal was,” Lynch said.

By this point Monday, Lynch had tweeted that he was indeed heading to New York, a city he never has visited, to vie for a trophy that no Mid-American Conference player – let alone one from NIU – ever had won.

In his haste to break the news to someone, Lynch inadvertently preceded ESPN’s announcement by a good 10 minutes.

Lynch’s second straight record-breaking year with the Huskies landed him in the same room as athletes from bigger schools who play in front of bigger fan bases.

Lynch said Tuesday he’s excited to get to New York and rub elbows with the Heisman elite. He wants to meet Bo Jackson, who won the award in 1985.

‘Saving Mr. Banks’ going to enthrall ‘Mary Poppins’ fans

By ED SYMKUS More Content Now I went to “Saving Mr. Banks” filled with, if not quite negative thoughts, then at least a feeling of ambivalence. Yet I came out of it in fine fettle, even humming a few bars of “A Spoonful of Sugar.” I am no fan of the Disney film “Mary Poppins,” one of the biggest hits of 1964, and still a movie that just about everyone I know still recalls fondly. Nor do I generally like songs in my movies. Nor did I have any clue as to what the title meant – who is Mr. Banks, I wondered.

Well, I still think it’s not a very good title (Yes, I did see “Poppins” some years ago, but I sure didn’t recall it was about the Banks family). But almost from frame one, I fell under the spell of this story-behind-the-story of how “Mary Poppins” almost wasn’t made. It seems that the book’s author, P.L. Travers (Emma Thompson), was quite the crank, and so protective of her magical floating nanny, she wasn’t going to let anyone mess with her. Especially not this Walt Disney fellow (Tom Hanks), who, in her mind, just made frivolous cartoons.

Cinema history books reveal that it took Disney 20 years to convince the British writer (born in Australia) to even visit his studio, to get her to meet with the scripter and songwriters who were trying to fashion the film, and to get her to sign over the rights to her beloved creation. Though “Saving Mr. Banks” is about one of the most popular kids’ films in the world, it really isn’t a film

“Saving Mr. Banks” stars Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson. It is rated PG-13. for kids. This one’s for the adults who loved it and who remember it and who, though they might have heard that there some problems making it, sure don’t know how big those problems were.

Thompson gets one of the juiciest parts she’s ever had in Travers, who insisted that everyone call her Mrs. Travers, not Pamela (and certainly not Pam), even while Disney insisted that everyone call him Walt. And though Hanks plays it low key, Thompson goes for the rafters, and beyond.

This is the story of the stepping-on-egg-shells relationship between Travers and Disney, as well as the one she had with the film’s songwriters – the brothers Robert and Richard Sherman (B.J Novak and Jason Schwartzman) – and one of its adapters, Don DaGradi (Bradley Whitford),

in a cramped rehearsal-writing room.

I’ve got a feeling that things have been cleaned up a bit in this telling of it, because it’s kind of fun to watch her literally take over the writing sessions, insisting that “This is my film and I shall have it my way,” while everyone around her is bursting with great creative ideas but fuming with frustration.

The drama of this film is that she had to be there, had to be able to nix this or that, or she wouldn’t assign over those rights. It’s quite fascinating to see how “Mary Poppins” took shape, and how, obviously, she was finally won over (it was the song “Let’s Go Fly a Kite”), but “Saving Mr. Banks” falters a bit with an overuse of flashbacks to Travers’ childhood (which include a wonderful performance by Colin Farrell as her

seemingly happy but troubled father). But all is made up for with joyous, crackling turns from Novak and Schwartzman, along with little side ingredients like a snatch of the Dave Brubeck Quartet’s version of “Heigh-ho” on the soundtrack.

To set the record straight, Thompson stars in this film, and Hanks is in a supporting role. And even though it’s the actors who bring it all alive, this is really a celebration of storytelling. Note: Make sure to stay for the end credits.

There’s a neat surprise in the middle of them.

Today’s insulin injections cause minimal pain, discomfort Dear Doctor K: I have to start taking insulin for my Type 2 diabetes. It sounds complicated.

What do I need to know before I start?

Dear Reader: The first thing you need to know is that it is simple to learn and do, and the discomfort is minimal. Tens of millions of people all over the world do it every day – and probably most of them were afraid that it would be complicated and painful before they actually started taking insulin.

Insulin is a natural hormone that lowers blood sugar in all of us. In people with diabetes, the body no longer can make enough insulin to keep the blood sugar level normal. Doctors usually recommend insulin for people with Type 2 diabetes when diet, exercise and pills cannot keep blood sugar levels low enough.

Insulin lowers blood sugar levels more effectively than any other available diabetes drug.

Insulin can’t be taken as a pill; it must be taken by injection or with an insulin pump. (Insulin pumps are generally reserved for people with Type 1 diabetes.)

A diabetes educator will teach you how to measure, prepare and administer the injections.

Most people use syringes or insulin “pens.” A pen injector uses disposable needles and insulin cartridges. There are several formulations of insulin. They vary based on how quickly they start working, how long it takes for the insulin to peak and how long it remains active. Different types of insulin can be used alone or in combination.

The type of insulin and how much and how often you use it varies from person to person.

You’ll work with your doctor or diabetes educator to develop an individualized insulin program.

Your goal is to maintain a blood sugar level that’s as close to normal as possible without having your blood sugar dip too

low. Low blood sugar can have dangerous consequences of its own. If the sugar goes too low, you can become tired, confused and disoriented. You can even lose consciousness.

Your blood sugar level is affected both by what you eat and how much insulin you take.

Most people on insulin or other diabetes medicines check their own blood sugar levels with simple home kits. The doctor may recommend adjustments in the dose of insulin based on these blood levels.

You’ll learn to manage your blood sugar by testing your blood once or twice a day to determine whether you need to adjust your insulin dose.

You’ll use a glucose meter to do the testing; that’s standard equipment for most people with diabetes.

You can refrigerate insulin or store it at room temperature.

But don’t freeze it. Also, discard insulin that has expired or looks cloudy or otherwise strange.

Be honest, are you overweight?

Dr. Wallace: I’m a 16-year-old young lady. I have excellent grades, a wonderful set of parents, and I’ve been told that I have a very pretty face.

But I also have a major problem. My family doctor gave me a complete physical examination last week and told me that I’m 40 pounds overweight, but that was my only concern. He said that I should start a healthy eating program immediately geared to losing one pound a week by counting calories.

He said my food intake should include fresh fruits and vegetables and lean meats that include white meat of chicken and turkey and tuna fish. I have a calorie chart so I will be sure to have an accurate calorie count.

I will also start a daily (morning) walking plan.

I’m not going on a crash diet, but I am going to lose a pound a week. I can’t tell you how my extra weight has hindered my social life because you might not believe me. I’m contacting you because I pray you answer my letter so the world will know that I’m serious about reaching my goal. If you use my email in your column, I will cut it out of the paper and tape it on our refrigerator as a reminder to “Think Thin.”

Lisa: Keep plugging away. Medical research indicates that every cigarette smoked increases one’s chances of damaging one’s health.

At 50 cigarettes a day, Mom’s in an extremely high-risk category for contracting a smoking-related illness, many of which, of course, are fatal. Your ultimate goal should be for Mom to stop smoking, but getting her to cut back would be a good start.

Elizabeth Gaskell, a 19th-century English novelist and short-story writer, said, “How easy it is to judge rightly after one sees what evil comes from judging wrongly!”

At the bridge table, how easy it usually is to see the winning line after going down from playing wrongly. This deal is a good example of that. West leads the club queen against four spades.

How should South proceed?

A less experienced player follows “rules” and has trouble spotting when they are not appropriate. Here, declarer would see nine trumps and think “nine never” – do not finesse for the queen; instead, play for the drop. But when the queen does not appear and he turns to diamonds, East ruffs the third round and shifts to the heart queen, giving the defenders one spade and three hearts.

Let’s analyze this deal without using rules. If spades are 4-0, especially if West has them all, South is in difficulty.

But if the trump split is more favorable, he is sitting prettier.

Outside spades, declarer has six winners: four diamonds and two clubs. So he needs only four spade tricks, not five. Next, he can lose four tricks only if East gets on play and leads a high heart through South’s king, with West having the ace. Then declarer could lose one spade and three hearts. It is time for an avoidance play. After winning the first trick, declarer should play a spade to dummy’s ace and follow with a spade to his jack. Here, that brings home an overtrick. But even if the finesse were to lose, the heart king and the contract would be safe with West on lead.

Emotions run high as Kaneland OKs levy SUGAR GROVE – The Kaneland School District 302 Board approved the district’s tax levy Monday night, in a three-hour meeting at Kaneland Harter Middle School that featured emotional comments from residents and tension among board members.

There were no changes from the tentative levy that was approved in October. The total levy is $52,210,825 – a 4.58 percent increase – and Julie-Ann Fuchs, the district’s assistant superintendent for business, previously laid out the impact for taxpayers: a $425 increase in annual taxes for an owner of a $200,000 home, $638 for the owner of a $300,000 home, $850 for the owner of a $400,000 home and $1,063 for the owner of a $500,000 home.

Board members Gale Pavlak, Teresa Witt, Peter Lopatin, Veronica Bruhl and board President Cheryl Krauspe voted for the levy.

Board members Tony Valente and Pedro Rivas voted against it.

Residents talked during a public hearing on the tax levy, with eight speaking against it and two commenting in favor of the district’s action.

Elburn resident Nancy Schnaitman told board members that while they did have the right to vote for the levy, “just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should do it,” a theme that was repeated during the public comments.

KANELAND CONNECTION Al Lagattolla After the public got its say, Valente spoke. He called the tax levy “backdoorish” because district officials are increasing funding in transportation and special education to make up for a potential shortfall in the education fund, brought about because the district has reached its maximum tax cap.

Fuchs has said the district would face huge cuts without increasing the funding in transportation and special ed.

Valente pointed out what he said was an example of what the district wasn’t doing to save funds – pointing to the assignment of Ralph Drendel and Rudy Keller to positions as athletic directors. The move, which was approved, calls for Drendel to make $250 a day, not to exceed 100 days, and Keller to make $500 a day, not to exceed 70 days. Longtime Kaneland athletic director Leigh Jaffke resigned in October.

Valente said the district could live without that position for the rest of the school year. Superintendent Jeff Schuler disagreed, saying every district he had been associated with had an athletic director.

Valente then tore into fellow board members, saying, “I’ll tell people what the

philosophy of some of these board members is … it’s to tax to the limit.” Valente, a Sugar Grove resident who works as principal at Proviso East High School in Maywood, also criticized the fact that some administrators and principals don’t live in the district, calling them “carpetbaggers.” Valente said the district needs to make “sweeping” changes of administrators.

Some residents applauded after Valente spoke, as they did during public comment when other residents spoke.

Valente sparred extensively with board member Witt, who told Valente that “you have an ax to grind, and we are sick of it.” Witt defended the vote, saying without an increase more than 13 teaching jobs could be eliminated.

Later, they exchanged barbs again, with Witt taking issue with Valente’s criticism of her reading a prepared statement. Valente called Witt a “rubber stamp.”

Witt told Valente that the board members “are sick and tired of your bullying ways, and it will stop.”

Pavlak said that while taxes were rising in Kaneland, they remain lower than other districts, using Batavia as an example.

Pavlak said the district had cut more than $7 million from its budget, adding that teachers have taken a pay freeze.

Bruhl said the district had been “extremely frugal when

it comes to your money as taxpayers.”

Rivas said he didn’t want to point fingers, but he felt – like residents must do at home – that “we need to tighten our belts.”

Krauspe said the board had “made cuts we needed to make” and “tightened the belts we needed to tighten.”

She said she took “great offense” at Valente’s comments.

“You have a right to your opinion,” she told Valente.

“But you do not have the right to your own facts.”

The discussion didn’t end after the tax levy vote.

Valente spoke during a presentation on long-term financial planning. Lopatin said he understood that the levy and financial planning were conversations that did overlap, but he said they were separate issues.

He said the “conversation Tony is forcefully pushing” on expenditures was “a big conversation to have,” and “tonight is not the night.”

The last word came in public comment. Jason Mann, who spoke earlier in support of the board’s action, said he wanted the board to do something “to stop board member grandstanding.”

Education in Action “Crumpled Classics”

Laughter abounded at Kaneland Harter Middle School during the weekend before Thanksgiving, as the school’s Drama Department presented their annual fall play on November 22 and 23. This year’s show, “Crumpled Classics,” by Craig Sodaro, parodied some of Literature’s most well-known and beloved stories, such as “Romeo and Juliet,” “Frankenstein,” and “Sherlock Holmes.”

However, hilarity ensued when the quirky characters made the stories “more relevant to today’s audience.”

Romeo and Juliet came from families who owned rival fast-food restaurants and “Shirley Holmes” and “Joni Watson” solved the case of the missing toothpick.

Next on the bill is the Harter Middle School production of “Seussical, Jr.,” a musical extravaganza starring everyone’s favorite Dr. Seuss characters, in April 2014.

Almost 500 people attended the two performances, and the 28-member cast, consisting of students in grades 6-8, was very pleased with how the show turned out.

Helping out behind the scenes was a technical crew of about a dozen students, assisting with set painting, props, lighting, and costumes and make up. With parent and faculty volunteers and the support of the Kaneland Performing Arts Boosters, the production owes its success to the entire Kaneland community, for which the middle school Drama Department is very grateful.
