Children, families enjoy ‘Shop with a Sheriff’ event

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Ten-year-old Caden Nobel smiled as he clutched a skateboard and a bag of Minecraft Legos after Christmas shopping at the Batavia Wal-Mart.

But this was no ordinary spree Wednesday: It was the annual Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 14 Shop with a Sheriff event.

“And I’m getting Nerf guns and I got a present for my little sister, a toy,” Caden said, holding up a Peppa Pig. “This is my favorite,” Caden said, hugging the Minecraft Legos to his chest. “I love Minecraft and I love Legos.”

“It means a lot,” said his father, Michael Nobel of Aurora, about the Shop with a Sheriff event. “It goes a long way. Some of us don’t have what others may have. For them [the FOP] to step up and buy my kids some presents – it means a whole lot.”

About 50 sheriff’s deputies, some still working and many retired, participated, which included 163 children and individuals, retired deputy John Stoffa said.

DoBanney Wesley of Aurora and her two sons, Jamie, 11 and Jaden, 10, also participated.

they go after the bad guys – I watch this show they call ‘Cops.’ And I like that show.”

Murphy gave Collins a hug.

“Crystal is doing a great job of shopping for her friends, as well,” Collins said. “She’s doing a great job. The candle is a gift for someone. And the wallet is a gift for someone. So she is thinking about others.”

Sheriff’s Deputy Nick Wolf and K-9 Erin, a bloodhound, also came to help out the shoppers.

“Her job is to find people,”

Wolf said.

But with such an arresting presence, people had no trouble finding Erin, with many stopping to pet her and take her photo.

Store manager Crystal Semmerling said it was a great event.

“We’re so excited to support the Kane County Sheriff’s Department FOP and be a part of this event,” Semmerling said. “We really enjoy having all the kids in the store and seeing the smiles on their faces.”

Batavia police searching for suspects in Walgreens theft

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Batavia police are asking for the public’s help to identify two people suspected of retail theft at a Walgreens store.

At about 9:25 p.m. Dec 1, one male and one female entered the Walgreens at 1918 W. Fabyan Parkway in Batavia, police said. Video surveillance

shows the two people concealing between $500 to $1,000 worth of cosmetics in a purse and leaving the store without paying for the items, Batavia Detective Kevin Bretz said.

“They were in the store for about three minutes,” Bretz said Wednesday.

A surveillance video still shows the man wearing a black jacket, blue jeans and a knit cap. The woman’s

hair was mostly blond, and she wore dark pants, a longsleeved top and a light-colored scarf. It is unknown whether the store’s anti-theft system inside the entrance beeped or sounded when the suspects left, Bretz said.

A vehicle description from the incident also was not available. Anyone with information is asked to contact Batavia police at 630-454-2500.

Couple bringing Cherrycello liqueur to St. Charles stores

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – After years of development – and encouragement from friends – St. Charles resident Ed Grzesik has bottled up the flavors of his Montana cherry orchard for public consumption.

His and his wife’s Cherrycello – a liqueur similar to limoncello but made with cherries instead of lemons – has been on the market for about two weeks, he said.

The drink is sold under his company’s name, Glacier Country, at Binny’s Bever-

age Depot and Lundeen’s Discount Liquors, both in St. Charles.

It is made from sweet cherries grown in northwestern Montana at an altitude higher than 3,000 feet, Grzesik said.

That altitude allows the cherries to be picked later than cherries grown elsewhere in the country, leading to better flavor, he said.

The cherries are handpicked in the cool morning hours and taken to a nearby distillery the same day, he said, adding that they are cleaned, pressed and put into vats with vodka to marinate

POLICE REPORTS Kane County Sheriff’s Office • Joshua F. Lopez, 22, of the 800 block of Shepherd Lane, Elburn, was charged Friday, Dec. 4, with driving without insurance and driving without a license. He also was arrested on a warrant for failing to appear in court on a charge of driving with a suspended license.

• A front door and mailbox were reported damaged Sunday, Dec. 6, in the 5N500 block of Creek View Drive, St. Charles. Damage was estimated at $200 for the door jamb and was unknown for the mailbox. The resident believed the damage was related to another vandalism incident that happened two weeks earlier.

• Roger Lee Pendry, 51, of the 100 block of Dixon Drive, Batavia, was charged Sunday,

Dec. 6, with driving under the influence of alcohol and improper lane use after his vehicle reportedly went off the road and got stuck on a guardrail along Green Road near Elburn.

• The Blackberry Inn, 1S731 Route 47, reported Monday, Dec. 7, that $30 was stolen from the business Tuesday, Nov. 24.

• A snowboard valued at $800 was reported stolen Tuesday, Dec. 1, from the 4N000 block of Ferson Creek Road, St. Charles.

• Police responded to a call Thursday, Dec. 3, about a green recycling bin that had been set on fire in the 1N700 block of Brundige Road, Elburn. The contents reportedly burned to the ground. A garbage can also was reported missing. The total loss was estimated at $100.

They received support from Whistling Andy Distillery in Bigfork, Montana, Grzesik said, noting the owners liked the taste of Cherrycello and offered to make it.

But, he said, the transition from private to commercial production wasn’t instant, as making Cherrycello at home isn’t the same as making it in a distillery.

Research and development took about three years, he said, and about 18 months was spent on coming up with recipes that use Cherrycel-

St. Charles man charged with DUI in 3-car crash in Geneva

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A St. Charles man was charged with two felony counts of driving under the influence in connection with a three-car crash that injured two people, according to Geneva police reports.

Roberto C. ChaconJimenez, 58, of the 2000 block of Wessel Court, St. Charles, is being held on a bond of $75,000 in the Kane County Jail. As of Wednesday afternoon, he remained in the jail.

According to police reports, Chacon-Jimenez was driving a 1998 Pontiac Sunfire north in the curb lane in the 300

block of Randall Road, 300 feet south of Williamsburg Avenue, shortly after 7 p.m.

He hit a Roberto C. 2 0 0 4 Nissan ChaconRogue that Jimenez was stopped in traffic. The Rogue, in turn, rear-ended a 2014 Mazda CX5, according to a crash report.

Chacon-Jimenez got out of his car and yelled at the Nissan driver “for being stopped at a green light,” then went back to his car, according to police reports.

Two Wayne residents in the Nissan were taken to Delnor Hospital in Geneva with injuries that were not life-threatening. ChaconJimenez also was taken to the hospital, but he refused treatment, according to the crash report.

Chacon-Jimenez was charged with two counts of aggravated driving under the influence causing great bodily harm and driving too fast for conditions. The felonies have a penalty of one to three years in prison and fines of up to $25,000 on each count.

Chacon-Jimenez is scheduled to appear in court again Dec. 17.

ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – A Geneva native was among four individuals the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office honored for their contributions to the office, public safety and public service in 2015, according to a news release issued Tuesday.

Kaitlin Kerstetter, an assistant state’s attorney, received the office’s Ace of Spades Award in recognition of her work in traffic and misdemeanor trials, the release stated.

She has been with the office since 2014, according to the release.

The other honorees were Assistant State’s Attorney Bill Engerman, deferred prosecution program Director Michelle Halbesma and Assistant State’s Attorney Andrew Whitfield, according to the release.

Named prosecutor of the year, Engerman first joined the office in 2001 after more than a decade in private practice, the release stated. It indicated he left in 2008 for a position in DeKalb County and returned to Kane County in March 2011.

In the release, State’s Attorney Joe McMahon stated it was a pleasure to honor Engerman.

“He is respected by all in this

office, and he is respected by his peers in the legal community,” McMahon stated. “That respect recently was highlighted when Bill was the first Kane County ASA to serve as president of the Kane County Bar Association.”

Halbesma was named the office’s employee of the year.

A 22-year employee, Halbesma has provided the diversion program with tangible certainty of its effectiveness, the release stated. A recent study showed the recidivism rate among participants is about 8 percent, meaning that about 92 percent of those who complete the program do not return to the criminal justice system within three years.

She also works with other state’s attorney’s offices to help them establish similar pretrial diversion programs, according to the release.

“Michelle is everything I could ask for in an employee,” McMahon stated in the release.

“She’s conscientious, caring, hardworking, efficient and willing to be a trend-setter. Her efforts here have really helped me understand how to best use our limited resources.”

Whitfield, who is assigned to the Child Advocacy Center, also received an Ace of Spades Award. He previously won the honor in 2008 and 2014.

Vandals target decorated homes near Geneva

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com BLACKBERRY TOWNSHIP – Vandals in recent weeks have targeted homes decorated for the holidays in a subdivision just west of Geneva, according to Kane County Sheriff’s Office reports.

In each of the three cases reported since Nov. 30, the Mill Creek residents discovered wires cut for their lighted decorations.

A resident of the 0N200 block of Sulley Square in Blackberry Township reported the damage Nov. 30, telling authorities this was the third straight year such vandalism had occurred, according to a report.

The set of Christmas lights appeared to have been damaged by a wire-cutting tool,

as it had a “smooth cut in the wiring,” police reported. The estimated damage was $50.

On Dec. 3, a resident of the 0N500 block of Sounders Drive in Geneva Township reported he first noticed damage to a lighted Christmas decoration several days earlier but chalked it up to an animal’s doing.

He contacted police Dec. 3 after lights for a set of four plastic candy canes didn’t work, police reported, noting that a wire was cut. The decorations reportedly were valued at $30.

A resident of the 0S900 block of West Burnham Lane in Blackberry Township reported Monday that her Christmas lights were damaged overnight. The wire was cut in several places, police reported.

The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum has planned its second Lincoln art contest. The deadline for submissions is Dec. 18.

Three individuals caught on camera at Wasco Nursery

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com CAMPTON HILLS – The Campton Hills Police Department is investigating a burglary in which three individuals were caught on camera at Wasco Nursery and Garden Center for more than two hours, according to a police report.

Police were called to the business, at 41W781 Route 64 in Campton Hills, about 9:10 a.m. Sunday, several hours after its garage and several vehicles were burglarized, according to the report.

Signs of forced entry were evident, and various tools were stolen, police reported.

Loss was estimated at more than $900, according to the report.

Food had been thrown on the break room floor, a ther-

mostat had been removed from a wall, lockers had been opened, and clothes, boots and loose change had been discarded on the floor, police reported.

According to the report, security footage showed three males were on the property from 2:53 to 5:10 a.m. They appeared to be 5-feet-11 to 6-feet-tall and weigh 185 to 200 pounds, police reported.

Two of the males appeared to be 18 to 20 years old, kept their faces concealed and wore hooded sweatshirts, sweatpants and possibly gym shoes, according to the report.

An age estimate was not included for the third subject, who wore a jacket, possibly jeans and hiking boots, police reported. The reported indicated that he was also seen climbing on the roof and, at 4:44 a.m., riding a bike through the parking lot.

‘The most wonderful time of the year’ With Thanksgiving behind us and a majority of December still ahead, I can now officially say we’re in the midst of the Christmas season. It’s a picture-perfect couple of weeks, from twinkling lights and decorations to beloved songs and time with family. Every time December rolls around, I can clearly see where the songwriter got the inspiration for these lyrics: “It’s the most wonderful time of the year.” I couldn’t agree more. There’s just something about this season that warms the heart and brings endless joy.

For me, Christmas celebrations and activities begin long before Dec. 25. The day after Thanksgiving, my family begins the often week long process of decorating our house for the holidays. The tree goes up first, and we decorate it afterward with the abundance of ornaments we’ve acquired throughout the years. I always enjoy seeing my “Baby’s First Christmas” ornaments, as well as ornaments we’ve traditionally purchased from previous vacations. Decorating the tree is like a trip down memory lane combined with the fun of family time, making it the perfect activity to kick off the holiday season.

While the inside of my house is being adorned with all kinds of decorations, the outside is being decked out as well. The front lawn hosts a lit-up nativity, a scene that looks especially beautiful when surrounded by falling snow. I always enjoy my family’s “Christmas light drives” as well. We all get in the car and drive around to see what festive lights other homes have put up in anticipation of the holidays. We usually encounter some lovely displays, as well as some unique ones that always elicit a chuckle.

Nevertheless, it’s a fun way to see how other houses and neighborhoods get in the holiday spirit.

All the fun doesn’t only happen at home, however. At school, the

One of my favorite ways to celebrate Christmas is by attending my church’s weekend services during the month of December.

They combine music, a compelling message about the Advent season and other elements to create a wonderful experience. It’s a great way for me to affirm my faith during the holiday season.

If I tried to write down all the ways I celebrate Christmas and all the special traditions my family has, this column would probably go on for much longer than my word limit allows. I hope that everyone has their own ways to enjoy this special season in whatever form they choose, and can experience the same happiness I do. Just like the song says, it truly is “the most wonderful time of the year.” I wish you all the joys of the holidays!

How TV networks are giving Trump an advantage

By JIM TANKERSLEY The Washington Post There was a moment right around Halloween when American television networks seemed to tire of Donald Trump.

After months of dominating his Republican presidential rivals on cable news, the real estate mogul suddenly found himself trailing Ben Carson and Marco Rubio in on-air mentions, according to Internet Archive data collected by the GDELT Project.

The moment didn’t

last long.

Trump is back to dominating other Republicans – and even the Democratic front-runner, Hillary Clinton – in TV exposure.

That’s true, even if you only look at exposure on Fox News.

Looking at the seven-day period ending Dec. 6 – before his latest comments about blocking Muslims from entering America – Trump’s advantage is massive.

It’s overly simplified to say all this exposure has put Trump atop the

Republican polls; Jeb Bush also has been on TV a lot, and he’s languishing in low single digits.

But it’s a clear economic advantage for a candidate to get free air time, saving his or her campaign the expense of buying TV ads.

Since he entered the race, Trump has pressed that advantage tremendously, and the networks have gone along with it.

‘Keeping your clientele happy’ Salerno’s On The Fox prides itself on old-school look, quality product

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Joseph Salerno may be the owner of Salerno’s On The Fox in St. Charles, but he didn’t create the Italian-American eatery.

The restaurant, located at 320 N. 2nd St. in St. Charles, recently celebrated 40 years of business after opening in St. Charles in 1975. What started out as a small tavern in Berwyn turned into what Salerno’s On The Fox is today.

Salerno’s uncles, Vince, Arnie and Joe, started the tavern in Berwyn, just as a bar where people could come and enjoy a beverage. After a while, they decided it was time to offer an alternative to chips and peanuts, and thus came the pizza, followed by what are now signature dishes at Salerno’s On The Fox – lasagna and ravioli.

“My grandmother went in the back and broke a broomstick in half and started rolling some dough,” Salerno said. “Once they saw how much everyone liked the pizzas, they thought, ‘Imagine how much people will like the lasagna and ravioli.’ They started experimenting and they kept extending the menu more and more.”

Salerno said people come into the restaurant all the time, saying how remarkable it is that he has created and maintained the atmosphere he has. While he’s happy and proud of the Salerno name, he knows that it isn’t something he created.

“Our generation of cousins had it easy,” Salerno said. “My father and uncles came here not knowing a word of English and created something. They had no computer system, no tickets that ran, just a piece of paper to write down orders. To this day, I still laugh to myself at how un-

“We did not make these places; we carried it on,” he continued. “They made the product; we just kept it going.”

Through the years, the dishes served at Salerno’s On The Fox have hardly changed.

All of the pastas are homemade, as is the sausage, which Salerno said he personally makes twice a week.

Could Salerno and his father, Adam, make the restaurant more innovative, throwing more TVs on the walls? Or adding high top tables and chairs to compete with new restaurants opening in the area?

Sure. But why would he?

“Why ruin history? You could easily change a lot about this place,” Salerno said. “There have been small changes, like the ceilings and chandeliers, but the product? I’ll never change that.”

Salerno said that in the 40 years Salerno’s On The Fox has been in business, it has been running stronger than it ever has been. And that goes from the strong customer base that loves the tradition, to hostesses – one currently working at the age of 81 – to cashiers and bartenders.

“These kids that are now 30 years old

that come back in here were our servers and people that worked for me,” Salerno said. “You can ask anyone, they don’t come into work every day for a paycheck.

They love this place as much as I do.

We’re always here [the family], and the customers and people involved in this place continue to drive me to work every day. That’s more of a success story to me than any paycheck. We don’t look at clocks. We never have. The top priority is keeping your clientele happy. We have two types of clientele – the Joe Salerno upand-coming customer base; and then the Adam Salerno customers who have been coming in for 30 years – and you have to keep everyone happy.”

As long as Joseph Salerno, or anyone with the Salerno last name, is in charge of Salerno’s On The Fox, you can bet that the old-school charm and homemade product will remain.

Vikings call on nonconference foe from Down Under

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com GENEVA – When looking for another nonconference game to fill up his team’s schedule, Geneva boys basketball coach Phil Ralston was starting to get desperate.

But never did Ralston nor athletic director Jim Kafer realize just how far that search would expand.

Jim Kafer Kafer corresponded with an organizer that brings Australian basketball teams to the United States for an opportunity to play against American teams, asking if the Vikings would be interested in hosting a team this season.

Once Kafer discussed it with Ralston, it was decided.

The Anglican Church School, or “Churchie,” as it is colloquially known, will visit Geneva all the way from East Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, to play the Vikings on Saturday night.

“It’s kind of a strange situation, but we were in desperate need of a nonconference game,” Ralston said. “We got reached out to and we thought, ‘We need a game, let’s go, bring them over.’ ” “They asked if we’d be interested in playing an Australian team,” Kafer said. “We wanted to figure out a few things, but once we got all of the details worked out and heard about everything, we got it put together. It’s a unique experience for them, for our guys, and I can tell you that a lot of us are looking forward to it.”

Ralston mentioned that Churchie had come over to the States during last basketball season to play Naperville Central and Benet. Officials from those schools were Kafer’s first go-tos when deciding whether it was something Geneva wanted to do.

“They were very complimentary and positive about it, saying that it was a great experience for them,” Kafer said of his talks with Benet. “We also wanted to find out the competition level to make sure it wasn’t, in effect, a professional team and not be the best thing for our players. But I don’t want to say they are comparable to an Illinois powerhouse, but definitely very competitive.”

Kafer also mentioned that scheduling the game required IHSA approval, which was eventually granted. With international players becoming more popular on rosters of col-

legiate and professional teams, Kafer was told that the Australians view this trip as more than just an experience.

“I think they look at this as a chance to showcase some of the talent they have in Australia,” Kafer said. “I’m sure they come to experience a different sort of game and see how things are here, but they want to showcase some of their kids and what they bring to the table. It’ll be an exciting night.”

Churchie, an all-boys private high school, will take on a Vikings team that is off to a strong, 5-1 start, after beating Bartlett on Tuesday night.

Senior forward Bennett Fuzak said he’s looking forward to the experience of having a team the Vikings aren’t very familiar with come to Geneva

for what they know will be a memorable day. The Vikings plan to have a pizza party – with all three levels (freshman, sophomore and varsity) playing Churchie – after the games before another nice gesture by many of the families of the Vikings’ players.

“It’s definitely a fun thing, but a lot of the Australian players will be staying at our houses Saturday night,” Fuzak said. “It’ll be interesting to see what they go through in everyday life and vice versa. I think it’ll be a cool culture change for both of us.”

Fuzak will have two members of the Churchie team staying at his house, while fellow senior Jordan Vedder will host three players. Vedder joked that he had never been to

Australia or “never heard an Australian talk,” though in all likelihood, he meant in person.

Kafer said he would imagine, but couldn’t be sure, that Churchie will play more than just the Vikings during the team’s trip to America. While happy for his team to schedule another nonconference game, Fuzak had a wry smile about just how far outside the conference this team is.

“Yeah, it’s just a little bit outside the conference,” Fuzak said. “I never thought I’d have a game against a team from Australia, but it’s a great opportunity to play someone we’re not exactly used to seeing.”

Geneva and Churchie will tip off at 6 p.m. Saturday.

“It was the furthest place I could think of in my tod-

dler mind,” Kim Griffin said, “Kevin has it engraved in the inside of his wedding ring, so it’s really a part of us.”

The book may end, but the Griffins’ story doesn’t.

“I’m still receiving chemo treatments every two weeks, at least for the near future,” Kevin Griffin said. “There are days that I don’t want to get up, and even more when I can’t.

“Kim’s book has given me a focus. I’ve always been proud of her, but her work on this book has helped to pick me up and try to do everything I can to help her spread news about her writings. She is my wife and has also become my caregiver, and this book goes so far in showing everyone else the incredible woman that me and my boys

As a wife and mother, Kim Griffin has enjoyed many victories and joys as well as challenges and frustrations.

Nothing, though, could prepare her for what’s she’s endured for the past five years with her husband, Marmion boys lacrosse coach Kevin Griffin.

Kevin Griffin was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2010. It went into remission the following year, but then Kevin Griffin it came back.

Kim Griffin has been by his side all along the way, offering even more than emotional, loving support and companionship. She’s helped with case management, including a myriad doctor’s appointments, chemotherapy treatments and radiation treatments, as well as assistance with activities of daily living, advocating and more.

Performing multiple roles is common for the spouse of a cancer patient, but storyteller isn’t one of them.

Kim Griffin has been telling the family’s story in journal entries at www. caringbridge.org. She has now turned them into a book, “Love You to the Woods and Back,” which is now available at www.amazon.com. It will also be available at other retailers shortly. She also hopes to have a book signing in the near future.

She had been overwhelmed with constant phone calls and emails from friends and family asking how Kevin Griffin was doing, so her journal proved to be the easiest and best way for her to communicate.

“Kevin’s originally from Canada, so there’s people from all over who were call-

ing and emailing, and then are the people he works with and at Marmion all wanting to know what’s going on,” Kim Griffin said. “This became our answer to everyone’s request for information.”

Writing became therapeutic for Kim Griffin, something she experienced years earlier.

She wrote letters to her father after he passed away in 1993. She then read them aloud.

“It was very helpful for me,” she said. “It helped him get through what I was going through.”

Just like the journal has helped her the past several years.

Turning her journal entries into a book was never her intention, and if not for a coincidental conversation at the end of a dinner, it may never have happened.

Author Pat Casiello, of Warrenville, was at that dinner.

“My husband had done business with Kevin for years, so he knew his story and we think he’s remarkable,” Casiello said. “Toward the end of dinner I found out that Kim’s an avid reader and I told her that I write novels with my sister under the name K.M. Daughters. Kim told me she’d be so honored if I would sign in and read the journal she’s been keeping, so I did.”

Casiello was captivated when she became one of the close to 43,000 visitors online.

“It blew me away,” she said. “There’s quite a few of

North grad Dieter savoring final swimming season Swimming a mile sounds incredibly grueling.

Even for Chris Dieter, a St. Charles North product and senior swimmer at Miami (Ohio), who swims a mile on a fairly regular basis. He admitted it’s not the world’s most enjoyable activity.

“It’s not the funnest.”

Dieter was a sprinter in high school, but as his college career has progressed, he’s become more of a distance swimmer. He Chris Dieter competes in the 100-meter, 200, 500 and milelong freestyle.

And it means a heck of a lot of practice.

“NCAA regulation has us at about 20 hours of training a week, so within 20 hours, we can get maybe anywhere from 50,000 to 70,000 yards a week,” Dieter said. “And my distance group that I’m training with, we’ll usually be hitting the top ceiling of that, around 60,000 to 70,000 yards a week, though that’s not as many yards as we did in high school, I can say.

High school was a bit rougher. But as your body ages, you don’t need the same type of training. I’ve been able to swim faster, training smarter and not harder.”

That’s an awful lot of swimming.

But it’s what Dieter loves doing. And as a senior, his time as a college swimmer is

ON CAMPUS Vinnie Duber almost over. In fact, Miami’s swimming season lasts just a few months into the new year. After wrapping up the Miami Invitational this past weekend, there’s a significant break, and the RedHawks won’t compete again until mid-February. Conference and national championships follow in March, and then the season is over.

With so few opportunities to compete left, Dieter has changed gears this season, not so much worrying about performance and instead focusing on soaking in these moments.

“As my coach said, sometimes I’ll get psyched out before a meet and I won’t swim well. But throughout this season, it being my last go-round, it’s mainly just been about having fun,” Dieter said. “This is the last time I’m going to do everything. I’m not going to spend the night before the meet worrying about how well I’m going to do because this is the last time I have to do it.

There’s no point in worrying.

Just get out there, have fun racing the guys next to you, have a [heck] of a time.”

Dieter will graduate in May, meaning he’ll have a couple of months of being what he called “a regular college student,” something

“I definitely want to stay

on deck with the team,” Dieter said. “A lot of alumni from our team will come back, especially the last few months when you’re waiting in between the season’s end and graduation. I’d like to be on

deck with the team, help out during training, kind of be a student coach, so to speak. So I’ll definitely still be there. It’s too big a part of my life for me to just throw away.”

As for what Dieter said he’ll miss most, it comes back to that rigorous training. It sounds like a ton of hard work – and it is – but Dieter also said it’s been a time that he’s enjoyed the most, getting in the pool with some of his closest friends.

“I know a lot of people don’t like the practices, but when you’re training really hard and you’ve got a bunch of your friends in the lanes next to you and you’re racing fast during practice, that’s one of my favorite parts of it,” he said. “So I guess I would say just training in the pool with my friends. My closest friends here are on the swim team just because we’ve spent so much time with each other.”

The most reliable way to prevent recurrences is to take a low dose of an antibiotic used to treat UTIs. There’s some room to experiment here. If you have frequent UTIs, ask your doctor about the following strategies and which one might work best for you: • take a low dose daily for six months or longer; • take a dose only after you have sex, particularly if the recurrent UTIs tend to follow having sex; • keep a supply of antibiotics in the medicine cabinet, and take them at the very first symptoms of a UTI to shorten the duration of symptoms.

If you would like to avoid taking antibiotics, there are two “natural” alternatives. Probiotic vaginal suppositories containing Lactobacilli have had promising results in premenopausal women like you. What about cranberry juice?

The evidence it can reduce the number of recurrent UTIs is weak.

Furthermore, you have to drink 8 ounces of it a day for six months to a year. There is a lot of sugar (and calories) in that much cranberry juice.

be in your best interest to attend a different high school just to be closer to a boyfriend. And I seriously doubt you would be permitted to attend a different high school just because your father works nearby.

Switching high schools is no easy task. Students must

attend schools where they reside, period. It would require a special hearing to allow you to attend the high school attended by your boyfriend. At this hearing, your request probably would be denied.

Dr. Wallace: I’m 20, divorced and the mother of a 1-year-old daughter. I have a full-time job as a secretary for a pediatrician, and my salary allows my daughter and me to have our own apartment. It is not too far from my mother’s home, and she is a wonderful baby sitter for my little Lacey. (She won’t allow me to pay her, so I find really great gifts for her to surprise her now and then.) My mother thinks Lacey needs a male role model in her life, and she keeps telling me I need to find a husband who can be a father to her. My husband and I want to know what I can do to prevent them.

Dear Reader: Many women know well the symptoms of a urinary tract infection (UTI).

You might feel a frequent urge to urinate, yet pass little urine when you go. It might hurt when you urinate.

Your urine might be cloudy, blood-tinged and strong-smelling. Furthermore, many women have a tendency to get repeated UTIs. UTIs usually are caused by bacteria that live in the gut and are present on the skin around the rectum.

There, these “bad” bacteria compete for food with “good” bacteria called Lactobacilli. If the bacteria are carried from the rectum to the vagina, they can enter the urethra (the tube that carries urine from the bladder) and infect the bladder.

Some women inherit a condition that makes it easier for the bad bacteria to stick to the lining of the urethra. That, in turn, makes it easier for the bacteria to cause an infection of the urethra and bladder. That’s why a tendency to have recurrent UTIs tends to run in the family.

Risk factors for UTI vary with age. Before menopause, the most common risk factors are sexual intercourse and use of spermicides.

Sex can push bacteria up the urethra and into the bladder. And spermicides may kill off beneficial good bacteria in the vagina, making it easier for the bad bacteria to multiply.

After menopause, the numbers of protective Lactobacilli in the vagina naturally decline.

Dear Abby: I remarried when my son, “Kevin,” was 5.

He’s now 20. My husband has always tried to be a good dad to him even though Kevin was challenging at times.

Kevin is now in the military. Before he left, he adopted a dog, “Leisel,” that’s a year old. Kevin will be deployed overseas for three years and wants us to take her. We have a dog and cat, a big yard and three teenage daughters who want Leisel, but my husband says no. He says it was a mistake to get the dog in the first place, and Kevin needs to learn a lesson and do the hard thing and give her up.

I agree it was a mistake, and I really don’t want another dog, but I’m willing to do it for my son. Lots of parents get “stuck” with their kids’ pets. They roll their eyes and just do it. Who is right?

However, unless that trick is a ruff, usually you should try immediately to establish a trick that you can cash when in with your ace.

The chance that partner has a void in a red suit is surely zero. So, where might you build up a winner? The best chance is to find partner with the heart queen.

Bruce Neill, who has represented Australia in seven world championships, did lead a low heart, the only start to defeat the slam. Declarer drew trumps and discarded his heart losers on dummy’s diamonds, but then had to lose two club tricks.

Be aggressive against small slams, cautious against grand slams.

He had designed the city’s first shipping-container apartment building on a privately owned site near Catholic University, which opened in September 2014. Dubbed SeaUA, referring to both its structure and the university, the four-level stack of blue corrugated boxes fronted by floor-to-ceiling windows drew a crush of media attention and calls and emails to Price from developers across the country. The college students who moved into the four six-bedroom apartments quickly got tired of the gawking.

“At first, it was kind of funny,” said Jamie Young, a senior who moved into the top floor with seven buddies from the football team. “After the 20th person asked to come to take a tour, we said, ‘It’s our house. It’s not a museum.’”

Price can rattle off these facts and figures, something his students are not as adept at yet. “You’re underselling it,” he tells one mumbler.

He wants his students to be skilled at pitching ideas in the real world of developers, zoning boards and skeptical neighbors. That comes easy to Price, who is a talker. When he gets going, he can be both punchy – “that flagstone ... is so patio suburban” – and ponderous – “nostalgically watered-down exterior decorating will shape our very human character into one monochromatic, bland whisper.”

Price was introduced to shipping containers in New Mexico during the 1970s when they were used in passive solar housing. Their moment passed with the energy crisis.

He moved to Takoma Park, Maryland, in 1980 and built a practice in preservation and designing modernist buildings with minimalist interiors and lots of glass. Among them is his own 2004 house in Northwest Washington with a copper-clad front, a glass

bridge and a four-story wall of windows in the back.

The popularity of industrial-style and sustainable design led to a resurgence of “cargo chic” in the early aughts. By then global economic forces had created a chronic surplus of empty containers. According to Marc Levinson, an economist and author of “The Box,” standardizing the size of the containers dramatically reduced the expense to ship goods from low-cost labor centers in Asia to markets in the West.

Today, thanks to the West’s huge trade deficit with China, it can be more cost-effective to send new containers full of goods than to pay for used ones to be sent back empty.

At any given time, experts estimate, 2.5 million containers are sitting empty around the world. That includes hundreds of thousands at U.S. ports such as Baltimore, which handled about 126,000 empty containers in 2014, Maryland Port Administration spokesman Richard Scher said. Finding uses for the containers has become irresistible to eco-minded architects and consumers.

A notable exception is

TreeHugger writer Lloyd Alter, whose father ran a container leasing business and who used them in architecture school projects. He said using containers can be wasteful because a three-story container building has enough steel for a 16-story conventional building. With conventional methods getting more sustainable all the time, Alter said, “there are far more greener ways to build.”

Price said the value of containers as cheap, readily available building modules shouldn’t be underestimated.

He believes they will one day displace the most common form of low-cost modular housing in the United States: the double-wide. “If you combine, in the simplest fashion, Legos with Ikea, suddenly you’re in a whole different ballgame,” he said, because “the working Joe and Josephine would be able to afford their own housing.”

As of early September, there was still no word from D.C. officials about the fate of the vacant city-owned lot.

If his design isn’t approved, Price said, it will be because of “a tyranny of the few.”

They only make money when their deal closes.

On the other hand, they are consultants. They advise buyers and sellers throughout the deal process, ideally giving their clients advice that is disinterested from their own financial outcome.

Often, these two objectives are aligned and there is no issue. For example, a listing agent makes more money if he is able to sell a house for a higher amount. However, there are many situations where the right advice for a client is not aligned with the agent’s monetary incentives.

For example, a buyer’s agent makes more money when his buyers buy a house for a higher amount.

The majority of successful real estate agents are true professionals who take the long view. Their advice is in their clients’ best interests.

Some agents go further by being fully transparent when conflicts arise (which they often do) and make certain any conflicts are fully disclosed to their clients.

So how do you know your agent is doing the right thing and giving you the best advice? Here are 11 things that your agent should be telling (or asking) you: • Stay put: From a purely financial perspective, you want to move in life as few times as possible. Let’s face it, moving is expensive. Once you add up the transaction fees, costs of moving, costs to furnish your new place, etc., it’s a lot of money. Further, in the early years of paying off an amortized mortgage, your monthly payment goes mostly to interest. As you

hold the mortgage longer, your payments increasingly go to paying principal.

Staying put is a great forced savings tool.

• More house, more problems: As a buyer, you should try to find the most modest home that will make you (and your family) happy. The larger the home you own, the more expenses and headaches you will have. Whether you are looking to buy a two-bedroom, salt-box house or a 6,000-square-foot, five-bedroom home, one key question you should be considering is whether the house is too big for your current and future needs.

• Your home is not an investment: A very common question our buyer clients ask us is whether a particular house is a good investment. We subscribe to the Robert Kiyosaki (author of “Rich Dad, Poor Dad”) way of thinking and tell our buyers not to consider

And the larger the home, the more expenses it will generate: more taxes, more maintenance, and more money to furnish it, clean it, etc.

• When buying, think long term: If the time horizon is long enough, almost all real estate will appreciate in value. The problem is, the real estate market is cyclical and no one knows when the peaks and valleys will occur.
