Santa, treats and holiday fun at Christmas in Kaneville On the Web

Al Lagattolla KANEVILLE – Paxton Greiff approached Santa Claus, then took a step back.

He took a candy cane, waited a second, then moved closer.

Eventually, both 2-yearold Paxton and his big sister, Kierston, 5, were comfortable enough to tell St. Nick what they wanted for Christmas.

And since they were the only ones in line at the time to see Santa late Saturday morning at the Kaneville Fire Department, the pressure was off.

That is among the features the kids’ parents, Cortland residents Mark and Heide Greiff, talked of enjoying at the annual Christmas in Kaneville festival.

Heide Greiff grew up in Kaneville, and the Greiffs said they come to the event every year. Mark Greiff said the kids have fun. Pointing to Paxton, he said his son “is definitely shy.” Then he noted that Paxton soon was telling Santa he wanted a toy combine and trains.

Heide Greiff said such an event is especially fun when “you personally know Santa.”

Kaneville Village President Pat Hill attended the event and, in an email, called Santa at the fire department “the main highlight” of the event. Hill, also the owner of Hill’s Country Store, wrote “everything went as planned” at the event.

“Everyone enjoyed the tractor rides throughout the village,” Hill wrote. “We had a nice crowd at the library for the musical performances. The bank and Hill’s Country Store were busy

with customers enjoying breakfast, desserts and ice cream. We had a nice crowd go through the historical houses and look at all the old vintage Christmas ornaments and decorations. The cookie walk went well.”

At the Kaneville Public Library, Ray Christiansen, the library’s director, smiled as he called the day “crazy busy.” As he spoke, Elyse Napoli’s music students prepared for a recital, and crowds were forming nearby.

“It’s a good thing,” Christiansen said. “For as small as a library as we are, to have a couple of hundred people come through is really

At the community center, Karen Flamand sat at a table that featured items promoting the Kaneville Township Historical Society. Also, baked goods were sold at the table. Whatever did not get sold, she said, would head to Hill’s Country Store, where Hill “will sell it for us.”

Hill is battling breast cancer, and signs supporting her are visible throughout the town and at her store. A sold-out event in Hill’s honor took place later Saturday at Fishermen’s Inn. Outside of the fire department, volunteer firefighter Brett Gobeli talked about how the community is coming together for Hill and how “we all look out for one another.” A seven-year resident of the town, Gobeli said he enjoys living in Kaneville.

“I loved it as soon as I walked in,” Gobeli said.

Forest Preserve Commission elects new leader

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – For the first time in 12 years, the Kane County Forest Preserve Commission has a new leader.

Kane County Board member John Hoscheit, R-St. Charles, officially stepped down from the position Tuesday.

“If there is a time to transition, it’s a good time,” he said.

Board member Mike Kenyon, R-South Elgin, was elect-

ed as the commission’s new president, beating out fellow board members Phil Lewis, R-St. Charles, and Barb Wojnicki, R-Campton Hills.

Kenyon thanked his opponents and his colleagues for their support.

“You talk about big shoes to fill,” Kenyon said.

With a term that began in 2002, Hoscheit is the county’s longest-serving president of the commission, county officials said.

Repeated referendums and

land deals that can take several years to complete were among the reasons why he stayed president for so long, Hoscheit said, noting the intensity is not as strong now.

“It’s time to give someone else the opportunity to lead,” he said.

Because his term with the County Board expires in 2016, he said, he has time to help with the transition in leadership.

SUGAR GROVE – A Sugar Grove resident’s report of finding stolen items in her home led to the arrest of a 43-yearold man, according to Sugar Grove police reports.

The woman – who had been away from her residence in the 100 block of East Park Avenue for several days – called police the morning of Nov. 5 about finding electronics that weren’t hers, police reported.

Televisions reportedly were on the couch, a laptop computer was on the kitchen counter and several musical items, including four speakers, were in the garage.

According to police, Erick N. the comput- Johnson er’s opening screen led them to Solid Rock Ministries, a church at 7S641 Barnes Road in Sugar Grove Township just miles away.

A Kane County sheriff’s deputy later that day informed Sugar Grove police that the church appeared to have been broken into recently, as several windows were boarded up

Also Tuesday, the County Board approved the standing committee appointments for 2015. About half of the committees will have new leaders.

“All of you [were] selected based on merit,” County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen said.

man possessed heroin at time of fatal crash

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles man charged in a Nov. 28 crash that killed a 65-yearold St. Charles woman had heroin in his possession at the time of the crash, according to court records.

Joshua E. Spudich, 23, of the 400 block of South Second Street, faces four counts of aggravated driving under the influence, a Class 2 felony; possession of a controlled substance, a Class 4 felony; driving under the influence of drugs, a Class A misd e m e a n o r ; Joshua driving with a E. Spudich revoked license, a Class A misdemeanor; and improper lane use, a petty offense.

Spudich’s preliminary court hearing is set for today.

He remains in the Kane County Jail on a $1 million bond.

Spudich suffered minor injuries in the crash, which happened about 2 p.m. Nov. 28 at North Second Street and Timbers Trail in St. Charles.

According to police, Spudich was driving a 2003 Hyun-

dai Santa Fe south on Second Street when he drifted across the center median and struck a northbound 2004 Toyota Corolla driven by Susan Gorecki.

She died in the crash.

At the time of the crash, Spudich possessed less than 15 grams of a substance containing heroin, and marijuana was detected in his system, according to court records.

Kane County Coroner Rob Russell has said an autopsy on Gorecki confirmed the preliminary cause of death was directly related to the crash.

Toxicology samples also were collected and sent to a forensic lab for results. During his monthly media briefing Tuesday, Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon said he will be prosecuting the case himself. This is not the first time Spudich has been charged in Kane County. His past charges include unlawful possession of alcohol in April 2010 in St. Charles and, in Geneva, driving under the influence of alcohol in August 2010.

In November 2010, he and three other teens were accused of robbing a group in a park in unincorporated St. Charles Township. He was charged with aggravated robbery in that incident.

RICHARD F. JONES Richard F. “Dick: Jones, age 60, died peacefully at his home on Lamma Island, Hong Kong shortly before Thanksgiving.

He was born on October 20, 1954, in Chicago, to John W. and Nancy B. Jones, the third of five children. His early years were spent in Wayne and then St. Charles. Dick was a 1972 graduate of St. Charles High School, and a graduate of Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington.

His entrepreneurial spirit surfaced while still a student. With business partner, Chris Rompel, Dick Jones created RoJo’s Ice Cream, which eventually grew into local lunchtime

powerhouse, RoJo’s restaurant in St. Charles.

While pursuing a career in photojournalism, Dick traveled the world extensively. Upon visiting and falling in love with Hong Kong, he trained to teach English as a second (or third) language in order to earn permanent resident status there. He then returned to photojournalism, freelancing for many of the major international news organizations, to pursue breaking stories all over Asia.

He was a member of the Hong Kong Foreign Correspondents Club.

Dick’s work was perfect for him, providing the opportunity for much travel and adventure. However, he enjoyed returning to the Fox Valley periodically to visit his family and many friends here. Another “home away from home” was Washington State and the Pacific Northwest where he also enjoyed a large circle of close friends.

At home on Lamma Island, Dick began a tradition 20 years ago that continues to this day. What started as his self-created 40th birthday party, grew into an annual music festival named “Dickstock”. Each year it is one of the largest social gatherings on the island, often featuring up to five bands, headlined by local favorites, The Bastards, with occasional

appearances by the Yung Shue Wan Wankers.

Dick was predeceased by his parents; as well as his beloved sister, Laurie.

He is survived by brother, Doug (Mary) Jones; sisters, Susan Jones and Emily Jones (Andrew) McMillin; nieces, Melisa Jones (Tony) Coletto and Kate McMillin; nephews, Brian Jones, Drew and Robbie McMillin; and great-nephews, Max and Alex Coletto.

At 1:00 p.m., on Saturday December 20th, a memorial service will be held at Yurs Funeral Home, 405 E. Main Street, St. Charles. Immediately following will be a reception at The Office, 201 E. Main Street.

Larry Hilkemann, 71, of Geneva passed away peacefully at Delnor Hospital on December 6th.

He was born in Norfolk, NE to Herbert & Elsie Hilkemann on April 12, 1943. Larry spent more than 45 years in ministry with the United Methodist Church. He served churches in Plato Center and Burlington, Arlington Heights, Geneva, and Naperville. He then was appointed District Superintendent and spent 6 years serving the UMC DeKalb District. Following his time on the Bishop’s cabinet, he continued his parish ministry in Winfield and St. Charles.

In his messages he employed a relatable style that invited exploration of faith relative to life. One of his greatest joys was being with people and knowing their stories.

He is survived by his wife, Bonnie;

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Larry Hilkemann spent 45 years in ministry in the United Methodist Church. Even after he retired, he still served congregations, said the Rev. Mary Zajac at Baker MeLarry morial United Methodist Hilkemann Church in St. Charles.

“He was very special to our congregation,” Zajac said.

“He served two churches after he retired. He loved to be a pastor.”

Hilkemann, 71, of Geneva, died Saturday at Delnor Hospital in Geneva.

Hilkemann was an active pastor in the area for 17 years at Geneva United Methodist

Church, Zajac said. After his retirement, he served a Winfield church and Baker Memoiral as an associate in pastoral care ministries, she said.

He served churches in Plato Center and Burlington, Arlington Heights, Geneva and Naperville. He was appointed district superintendent and spent six years serving the United Methodist Church DeKalb District.

“This was one of his natural strengths,” she said. “He was much loved in every church he served. He will be sorely missed here. He loved ministry ... and was much loved.”

The visitation for Hilkemann will be from 4 to 8 p.m.

8 Longtime Methodist pastor Larry Hilkemann dies at 71

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com A former Elburn woman who was injured in a fatal 2012 head-on Campton Hills crash has sued the estate of a Wisconsin woman who died in the crash, as well as a Wheaton man, according to court records.

Erin Pazin, currently of Elgin, seeks unspecified damages from the estate of Jennifer Liston and Bruce Greenberg of Wheaton, according to a lawsuit filed earlier this month.

Pazin was a passenger in a vehicle that was struck in a head-on crash on Dec. 1, 2012, in Campton Hills. The

driver of the other vehicle was Liston, who died as a result of injuries in the crash, according to the suit.

Maple Park resident Zachary Bingham, 18, also was killed in the crash, along with his dog, according to the Kane County sheriff’s office.

Bingham, who was Pazin’s boyfriend, was the driver of the car Pazin was in.

Pazin argues that Liston was negligent in operating the 2003 Nissan Altima that she drove in the crash.

Greenberg was the owner of the Altima, and Pazin argues that he negligently entrusted Liston with his car. The complaint also states that Greenberg observed Liston

consume alcohol before the Dec. 1 crash.

Diana Law, managing partner of the Law ElderLaw firm in Aurora, has agreed to be appointed as special representative of Liston’s estate, according to a petition in the case file. Neither Law nor Greenberg on Tuesday could be reached for comment.

A management conference for the case is scheduled for Feb. 19, according to court records.

The Bingham family filed the first lawsuit in connection to the crash against the Kane County sheriff’s office.

That suit is next due in court Dec. 17.

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com “Deep cleaning” of all schools in Kaneland School District 302 was to take place Tuesday night after students and staff members had experienced flu symptoms, according to a notice posted on the website of every school in the district.

The notice was signed by Renee Goier, the district’s interim superintendent. She noted that “many staff members and students” in the district “have experienced flu-like symptoms and have missed school.”

McDole Elementary School in Montgomery had been hit particularly hard, according to the district office.

The notice did not suggest that any schools would be closed. The notice stated there is a Kane County Regional Office of Education recommendation that if 20 percent or more of students at a school were to be absent because of illness, the school should be closed for a thorough disinfecting of the entire building. Goier’s notice stated that “none of our buildings are approaching

that 20 percent mark.”

Goier’s notice indicated that Mark Payton, the district’s director of building and grounds, would coordinate the cleaning, which was to begin once all children had left, “so we can keep the schools operating as normal for the rest of the week.”

“We are all committed to the safety and health of the young boys and girls who walk through our doors each morning,” Goier’s note indicated.

Flu cases extend beyond the Kaneland district in Kane County. Tom Schlueter, the health communications coordinator for Kane County’s health department, said numbers indicated flu cases were on the rise throughout the county.

For instance, for the week of Nov. 23 to 29, 8.72 percent of participating hospital emergency room visits was for flu-like illnesses. That number was continuing to rise during the past four weeks.

“We are sending out information to the schools advising them to keep an eye on things and encourage students and parents and staff to get the flu shots,” Schluet-

er said, adding that residents should take precautions and cover their coughs, wash their hands and stay home if they are sick.

9 Sugar Grove • A resident of the 700 block of Evergreen Lane, Sugar Grove, reported Tuesday, Nov. 11, that for the past three weeks he had been getting calls about a change to his bank account password.

After contacting the Federal Trade Commission, he learned that about 40 accounts had been opened with his Social Security number.

• Joseph Soto, 34, of the 43W700 block of Nottingham Drive, Elburn, was charged Friday, Nov. 21, with illegal transportation of alcohol and driving with a suspended license.

He also was arrested on a McHenry County warrant for failing to appear in court on a driving under the influence charge.

• A customer at Jewel-Osco, 465 N. Route 47, Sugar Grove, reported Friday, Nov. 21, that she forgot to take her $50 cash back from the self-checkout lane, and it was gone when she went back to get it. Video reportedly shows another woman taking the money.

• A fence was reported vandalized Monday, Nov. 10, in the 200 block of Carlton Mews Court, Sugar Grove. Repair costs were estimated at $50 to $100.

• An unlocked vehicle in the 500 block of Mallard Lane, Sugar Grove, was reported burglarized Wednesday, Nov. 5. Nothing was reported missing.

SUGAR GROVE – Residents will see their village property taxes increase by an average of $7.30 next year as the result of a $1.54 million tax levy that the Sugar Grove Village Board recently approved.

The board recently approved the $1.54 million tax levy, an increase of about $33,000 from 2013, or 2.2 percent. Village Board trustees Kevin Geary and Sean Herron voted against the increase.

The taxes will be collected next year.

Of that amount, about $22,734 is attributable to existing property and $10,437.84

is attributable to new growth, Sugar Grove Village Administrator Brent Eichelberger said. The estimated average increase for a household is about $7.30, he said.

The village represents about 6 percent of a resident’s tax bill, Eichelberger said.

Eichelberger said that while the village hates to raise taxes even a dollar, the village has known costs that are going up.

At the same time, he said, the village is trying to reduce the burden on taxpayers through improving its sales tax base.

In addition, Eichelberger said an industrial park that is being planned near Route 47 would further diversify the village’s tax base.

“That helps not only the village, but all the other tax bodies,” he said.

Thanksgiving Eve operation nets 7 drunken driving arrests

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Kane County’s Thanksgiving Eve no-refusal operation resulted in seven drunken driving arrests.

“The goal really is no arrests,” Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon said Tuesday during his monthly media briefing. “The goal is to educate the public and change their behavior.”

Despite the arrests, McMahon said he thought that message got through as many people who chose to drink that

night made alternative transportation arrangements. The operation included 13 municipal police departments, including Algonquin, Aurora, Batavia, Carpentersville, East Dundee, Elburn, Elgin, Geneva, Huntley, Montgomery, Pingree Grove, St. Charles and West Dundee, along with the Kane County Sheriff’s Office and the Illinois State Police Districts 2 and 15.

Batavia police charged Austin R. Runde, 26, of the 2200 block of Countryside Drive, Aurora, with driving under the influence and other offens-

es. Aurora police charged two people with driving under the influence – Lisandro Bonilla, 53, of the 500 block of East Galena Boulevard, Aurora, as well as Marcus D. Reynolds, 39, of the 700 block of Fulton Street, Aurora.

Illinois law states that a person is presumed to be unlawfully intoxicated for the purposes of operating a motor vehicle if his blood-alcohol level is 0.08 or higher. A person with a BAC below .08 can be charged with DUI if they are impaired.

From 11 p.m. Nov. 26 to

3 a.m. Nov. 27, officers who stopped and then arrested a suspected drunken driver – a driver who lawfully was stopped for a moving violation and subsequently displayed signs of impairment or intoxication – transported the suspect to the local police station.

At the station, the suspect was asked to submit to a Breathalyzer test. Any suspect who refused to provide the sample was instructed that a search warrant would be sought ordering them to provide the sample if they continued to refuse.

BATAVIA – Batavia aldermen at Tuesday’s Committee of the Whole meeting recommended approval of a second extension of the redevelopment agreement for the proposed new Walgreens store in downtown Batavia as Batavia Enterprises works out more details on the project.

The full Batavia City Council is set to vote on the recommendation at its meeting Monday. Because of the long time frame required to complete the environmental assessments for the project and to negotiate a lease with Walgreens, Batavia Enterprises is seeking an extension with the city, Batavia Community Development Director Scott Buening said in a memo.

In September, aldermen approved extending the time frame to Dec. 31 for Batavia Enterprises to complete its due diligence for the project. As part of the new extension, Batavia Enterprises would have to start on the project by May 1 or the city could terminate the agreement.

In light of the second extension, 3rd Ward Alderman Dan Chanzit asked Batavia Enterprises Vice-President Austin Dempsey, “Is there a chance that this project might not happen?”

Dempsey told aldermen that Batavia Enterprises is “committed to trying to make this happen.”

“I believe wholeheartedly we will get this thing across the finish line,” Dempsey said.

Batavia Enterprises wants to move the Walgreens from its current location at 138 W. Wilson St. in the Batavia Plaza into a 14,500-square-foot building with a drive-thru just east of East China Inn in the same shopping center. Plans are to demolish the former Swanson’s Hardware store/Prairie Path Cycles store at 122 W. Wilson St. to make way for the project.

Batavia Enterprises owns Batavia Plaza. Batavia aldermen in February approved a redevelopment agreement for the project. The project is in a tax increment financing district. Under the proposal, Batavia Enterprises would receive $450,000 from the city as the project moves forward, and another $693,000 that would be paid out over 12 years if the project generates enough TIF money to cover it.

Costs for the new Walgreens store are estimated at about $6 million, which includes a 10 percent contingency of about $520,250. Because the property has poor soil, the new building would have to be built on concrete caissons or piers, which is estimated to cost $275,000.

Nativity scenes play role in telling the story of Jesus’ birth

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com As the time drew near for the main happening at Saturday’s “Silent Night Live” event at Hosanna! Lutheran Church in St. Charles, visitors crowded around the gym area, where actors would soon perform a live Nativity scene.

Children and adults in the audience cheered and clapped as performers portrayed the birth of Jesus. It is the third year the church has staged such a live scene. Lynette Anderson, the church’s director of children and family ministry, said the hope is “that we could help the real meaning of Christmas come alive to the children and their families.”

Leaders at several local churches said such scenes can drive home that message.

That can be done with a live Nativity scene, in which performers portray the story in a brief presentation. Also, some churches will employ a display that might stay up throughout the Christmas season. For some, such a display won’t be complete until Christmas Eve, when baby Jesus will arrive.

Anderson said this is the third year Hosanna! has put together a live Nativity performance at the church, which is at 36W925 Red Gate Road in St. Charles. St. Charles resident Marie Kowalski participated in Saturday’s event, playing an angel. Kowalski said her family was eager to play a role in the celebration, saying such scenes can make viewers “feel like you were there.”

Performances have become an annual tradition at Geneva Lutheran Church, which is at 301 S. Third St. in Geneva. The location puts the church in a prime spot to be a showcase in the city’s annual Christmas Walk. Julie Slifka, the church’s interim director of children, youth and family programs, said the church has

been staging a live Nativity at the festival for more than 20 years. She said it has become “not just a part of Geneva Lutheran’s tradition, but also Geneva’s tradition.”

Slifka said middle school students at the church participate in the Nativity performance each year, and she said it’s a big deal for them. There are three presentations with three different casts, she said.

“They look forward to be-

ing eighth-graders because eighth-graders get the first choice of the parts they play,” Slifka said. “Mary and Joseph are quite sought-after [roles].”

While she enthusiastically spoke of Geneva Lutheran’s live Nativity tradition, Slifka added that scenes that use figures and stay up throughout the Christmas season are “absolutely essential to the season. They are a constant reminder of the meaning of the season.”

These scenes can be viewed throughout the area this season. At The Holmstad, a lifesized Nativity will debut at 2 p.m. Saturday at the facility’s annual Christmas open house event. A live Nativity will be performed, and then, as of

Monday, the scene will be on display, and it can be viewed through early 2015. The Holmstad is at 700 W. Fabyan Parkway in Batavia.

At St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Church, 8S055 Dugan Road in Sugar Grove, the Rev. Bob Jones said a Nativity outside of the church eventually will fill up. On Christmas Eve, Jesus will be added, he said.

He said there also is a scene inside the church that includes a manger that will remain empty until Christmas Eve. “They’re all reminders of the true meaning of Christmas,” he said. “We can get lost easily in all of the modern, more commercial notions of Christmas. This reminds

people of where the day actually came from – two words, Christ Mass … a special Mass for Christ.”

At Holy Cross Catholic Church, 2300 Main St., Batavia, the Rev. James Parker said he anticipates a Christmas Eve service in which the lights will be turned low and then baby Jesus will be placed into his manger in the Nativity scene.

He is in his first year as pastor of the church, but he said he previously was an associate pastor at Holy Cross and was familiar with the tradition, with parents sending their kids to pray before baby Jesus.

“This reminds us of God’s great love for us,” he said.

Encouraging the vote THE WASHINGTON POST Given that it’s the world’s oldest living democracy, it’s odd the United States puts so many obstacles between its citizens and the voting booth.

It’s not perhaps odd, but it is depressing how many Republican-led states over the past several years have added to those obstacles.

So it’s nice to be able to report a bit of good news: Illinois lawmakers last week approved reforms that will improve access to the ballot box, casting aside unconvincing objections from the local GOP. It is sad the legislature felt it had to rush its package through before Illinois’ Republican governor-elect takes over. Not everything in the bill, which includes many technical improvements, hits a hot-button election issue.

But it advances reforms that conservatives have fought against lately – even though improving voter access should be a bipartisan priority.

Illinois tested a sameday registration program in a few locations during last month’s election.

Massive lines resulted, indicating there is plenty of demand among people who hadn’t successfully cleared the voting registration hurdle before Election Day. Same-day registration systems also make it easier to fix voter roll errors on the fly. The legislature’s bill would make same-day registration permanent and available at many more voting precincts, thus preserving the benefit while shortening the lines.

Even that is not as far as reform-minded states could go: Making voter reg-

istration automatic, rather than opt-in, would be even better.

Short of that, it would help to integrate voter registration systems into various state agencies that regularly interact with citizens. The Illinois bill, for example, would require the Illinois’ Driver Services and Vehicle Services departments to take and transmit registrations to voting authorities electronically.

Illinois’ leaders also voted to expand early voting opportunities, including, very sensibly, the three days leading up to Election Day. GOP efforts to discourage voting, particularly among the poor, continue.

The usually stated goal is to prevent fraud, but little fraud takes place; sadly, the likelier motivation is discouraging Democratic turnout. The federal Voting Rights Act offers less protection from such maneuvers since the Supreme Court gutted one of its key provisions last year.

Voting access advocates nevertheless are hoping the high court will strike down restrictive voting laws after the fact.

The flurry of last-minute appeals before this fall’s elections was only the latest reminder of how the system is moving in the wrong direction in several states. The court set aside some of the worst restrictions, such as Wisconsin’s voter identification law.

But some stayed, including Texas’ voter ID requirements.

Illinois has the better idea. This is a democracy; let’s not discourage people from voting.

Fake Christmas trees and trimmings were on display; ads and stories began to appear on TV and in the papers. The hype had begun.

What should be a day more concerned with reverence and hope for mankind has deteriorated into something called “the holidays.” The celebration has become one of money and greed.

Spend to show your family you love them. Use that credit card to shower them with gifts they may not need, want or use. The pressure has become so intractable that many resort to giving cash or gift cards. It’s much less stressful, as Christmas should be.

As a child, I remember elders telling how, as children, they received one gift for Christmas, and maybe an orange. The holidays have become a form of propaganda, an effort to get people to reject the truth and influence

a change in their behavior or thinking. The giving and receiving of gifts is not a prerogative. The wise men gave gifts to baby Jesus, not to each other. Jesus gave of himself, as also did the “Little Drummer Boy,” and so should we. That is closeness, love and caring – that is Christmas. Charles Schulz’s Linus knew the meaning of Christmas, and, finally, so did Dickens’ Ebenezer Scrooge. Yes, there are economic consequences. But gifts can be given any time of year.

There may be an argument for giving gifts to children, or a gift of appreciation to a family member or friend. But, again, gifts can be given any time.

The word “holiday” refers to a religious day, a day intended for leisure and/or recreation and the suspension of business, which

businesses do, after taking it to the limit in a quest for profit.

Along with Thanksgiving and New Year’s, which are completely different, the story of the Christ child is beginning to read: “The wise men followed the star to Bethlehem, where they found baby Jesus in the manger. And they called it ‘the holidays.’ ” Papers will report how much money was spent, how much profit business made. What they won’t report is what the holidays did for “goodwill toward men.”

Whatever the moneyed interests want to call it, there will always be those who will still call it Christmas and celebrate its true meaning and import.

Have a very merry money.

By TRAVIS ZUELLIG editorial@kcchronicle.com SYCAMORE – A modest sixpoint halftime deficit turned into a second half “disaster” for the Kaneland girls basketball team Tuesday against unbeaten Sycamore.

The Spartans came out on a mission to make sure that their unbeaten run to start the season would continue. Sycamore held the Knights to three points in the second half and beat Kaneland 46-20 at home.

“I think the second half was awesome. We held them to three points,” Sycamore’s Madelyne Johnson said. “Our first half was kind of rocky, but coming out in the second half and holding a team to three points is a job well done.”

Johnson led all scorers with 14 points and showed her range from outside by knocking down three 3-pointers. The Sycamore defense was causing havoc for Kaneland. The Knights turned the ball over 23 times and shot 21 percent from the floor.

“Defensively, I was very impressed. To hold a quality team like Kaneland to three points says a lot about our defense,” Spartan coach Brett Goff said.

“We were trying to keep the ball out of the middle because they were hurting us in the first half, so I thought our girls did a very good job in the second half.”

Kaneland had problems early in the contest by having two starters, Vanessa Gould And Morgan Weber, out. But, the kept the score close.

The Spartans scored 16 points in that third quarter and held the Knights to three points. Johnson scored six points and Hopkins scored four points in the quarter.

Lauren Goff, who just returned from surgery, scored six points to cap the quarter.

“It is always a tough game against Kaneland and it’s a conference game.” Johnson said. “It is another conference win so I am proud.”

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com WHEATON – St. Francis boys basketball coach Bob Ward let his team have it during an early timeout Tuesday.

The rant was nothing the Spartans hadn’t heard many times before from their defensive-minded coach, although it was delivered even more emphatically than usual.

“The point was defense,” St. Francis junior Gabriel Johnson said. “It’s always defense, seriously. He’s always on us getting up the [help] line, D’ing up our man, high close-outs, everything.

I thought we did that really well and changed the game, really, defensively.”

After a lukewarm start, St. Francis took control for a 61-41 win against local rival Wheaton Academy. The Spartans used a 15-0 run during the third quarter to bust the game open.

“Other than them just daggering us to start the game, I thought we really came back and had really, really good defensive possessions,” Ward said. “And offensively, we kind of took care of the ball. At this point of the year, we’re not real pretty offensively, but I do think we’re ahead defensively, and I thought our offense was efficient.”

With usual sharpshooter Jason Sullivan struggling early, St. Francis (3-3) came to life behind Johnson, a 6-foot3 guard who canned his first six shots from the floor and scored a career-high 24 points.

Johnson, sporting a purplish shiner under his right eye from a wayward elbow last week against Hampshire, is the younger brother of former Wheaton Academy standout Lucas Johnson, giving the matchup extra sizzle.

“Yeah, of course,” Johnson said. “I get to go home, give my brother a little nudge, like we beat them. … It was a good game for us. I’m glad we won.”

Ward said Johnson’s progress is striking considering his relative lack of basketball experience.

“He’s a kid that, actually, when he was a young kid where everyone’s playing basketball, hundreds of games, he was a wrestler, believe it or not, and a very good one,” Ward said. “So this is really kind of like his third year of really playing, so he’s got a nice feel for the game, and he plays hard.”

Wheaton Academy (1-6) led 9-2 after a trio of early 3-pointers, two from guard Bryce Sandberg and one from forward Anthony Polinski.

But St. Francis surged within a point by the end of the quarter and led, 29-20, at halftime.

Thorpe honored: Marmion football and boys track coach Dan Thorpe was honored with the Fr. Alcuin Deck Distinguished Service Award by the school for the first semester of the 2014-15 school year.

According to a school news release, the award is “presented to an individual in recognition of outstanding contribution and faithful service to Marmion Academy and in gratitude for exemplifying a spirit of charity and dedication as a member of the Marmion faculty and staff.”

Purple Ace fever is spreading through the St. Charles East softball program.

East senior Olivia Cheatham committed to the University of Evansville softball program Friday, the same decision reached earlier by classmate Alex Latoria.

Latoria’s earlier choice boosted Evansville’s stock, Cheatham acknowledged.

“We’ve played together since we were 7 in rec league,” Cheatham said. “We started off our first season of softball together, and it’s kind of cool to be finishing together.”

Cheatham, who was promoted to varsity part-way through her freshman year, has been a key cog in the Saints’ unprecedented run of consecutive 30plus win seasons the past two years, including an IHSA Class 4A runner-up finish in 2013.

Cheatham visited Evansville – which competes in the Missouri Valley Conference – last month, and fielded a scholarship offer from Purple Aces coach Mat Mundell shortly thereafter.

Evansville, located in deep southern Indiana, was the first Division I school to pursue Cheatham, who also considered the University of Indianapolis and Olivet Nazarene.

“I always wanted to push myself to play at the highest level so I was really excited that I was given the opportunity [to play D-I softball],” Cheatham said.

Cheatham’s junior season dragged in the late stages because of a knee injury that she played through. She said she’s been healthy in recent months.

A shortstop for the Saints last season, Cheatham said she likely will play either in the middle infield or the outfield for the Aces. She said Evansville’s elementary education program and small size also made it a strong fit.

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – A quick glance at the scoreboard midway through the first quarter offered more than a hint about which team would win Tuesday’s girls basketball game between Batavia and Streamwood.

After handling the Sabres, 54-32, in Upstate Eight Conference River Division play, the Bulldogs insisted another inanimate object was partially responsible for the surge.

Batavia’s locker room board listed “create chaos,” “cause panic” and “don’t let them be comfortable” among the night’s objectives. More often than not, those things persisted.

“We started off with a good hit, then we lost it a little bit, but then we started picking it up once we realized that we lost our intensity,” Bulldogs junior forward Shea Bayram said.

Batavia (5-4, 3-1 UEC River) cruised to a 13-0 run to start the game, and did not surrender any points until the Sabres’ Kiana Jeremiah hit a layup with 3:35 remaining in the first quarter.

Success started with Hannah Frazier’s usual heroics.

The junior forward entered the night averaging 26.8 points and 12.8 rebounds a game, and had collected 14 points and sev-

en rebounds by the end of the opening quarter, when Batavia led, 20-4.

Frazier finished with 22 points and 10 boards, shining against Sabres sophomore center Jenejha Williams, who also stands 6-foot-2.

“We’ve just got to go in confident every game and expect the best and play our hardest,” Frazier said.

Batavia also struck behind its ball pressure defense, especially in the first few minutes.

Streamwood started a pair of freshmen at guard in Madelin Exline and Tamia Brown, but Jeremiah, a senior, largely was responsible for the ballhandling. Two quick Sabres turnovers, including one on a 10-second call, created the first of ample scoring opportunities as the Bulldogs kept hustling and adding to their initial lead.

The Bulldogs grabbed a 3517 advantage at halftime, and coach Kevin Jensen was ready to shuttle in the second team – including bench scoring leader Madeline Slater (six points) – whenever necessary after the break.

“His whole thing was just keep playing hard, and we’ll get you subs,” Frazier said. “If he could get subs in and out faster, then we can keep our tempo up without getting tired. So that was a lot of that. Just keep playing hard.”

Bethany Orman had nine points for Batavia, matching Streamwood co-leaders Cayla Hawkins and Jeremiah.

Streamwood opened a stretch of four straight games against Tri-Cities foes with a lopsided result that was common in its first few games.

The Sabres saw a threegame winning streak snapped, and know the upcoming schedule gets no easier with visits to St. Charles North and Geneva on the next two Fridays before a matinee home game against St. Charles East on Dec. 20.

“We’re playing a stretch now with the four tough teams, and we’ve got to take care of the basketball. We absolutely have to take care of it,” Sabres coach George Rosner said. “If we can take care of it, we can get good shots, get it into [Williams] and play off of that, then we’re going to be in the games.

And we’re capable of it. We just made a couple bad decisions tonight.”

Whenever that happened, the Bulldogs followed directions and prepared to pounce on the Sabres.

“I thought there were moments where there was chaos for them, they did panic and they were not comfortable,” Jensen said. “We’re just going to keep pushing our kids to try and get more of that all the time.”

Aurora Central Catholic boys basketball beat Bison KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE AURORA – The usual suspects struck for the Aurora Central Catholic boys basketball team Tuesday night, which means several Chargers pushed one another for the scoring lead.

Mac Cowen scored 22 points to lead four ACC players with at least 16 points, helping the Chargers defeat Fenton, 79-70, in their Metro Suburban opener.

“A lot of different guys were able to put up some points,” ACC coach Nate Drye said. “We gave up too many points on defense, but we were able to pull it out because we had that nice

balance.”

Mario May (19 points), Evan Schuetz (16) and Brett Czerak (16) followed Cowen for the Chargers (3-2, 1-0 Metro Suburban).

Drye envisions a tight league race against competition that also includes Wheaton Academy, Glenbard South and Riverside-Brookfield.

“It’s pretty solid top to bottom,” Drye said.

Let us praise the White Sox! The South Side team always seems to ride in the slip-stream carbon monoxide spewed by the Cubs in their shiny, overpriced, miswired limousine, but maybe not now.

As the Jon Lester sweepstakes continue into the night, the Sox quietly have done some things that, in the beloved hot stove league season, have made Sox fans perk up with joy.

How does snatching starting pitcher Jeff Samardzija and closer David Robertson sound?

The Sox got Samardzija, the former star receiver for Notre Dame and ace for the (ahem) Cubs in a trade with the A’s, and they picked Yankees reliever and World Series winner and 2011 All-Star Robertson via free agency. Oh, did I mention Samardzija was a Cub, traded away at the end of last season by the dog-mess, quasi-minor league team on Addison Street?

I did? (Not like that’s a big deal or anything in the North-South civil baseball war or anything.)

Well, did I mention Samardzija, 29, was an All-Star, too, or that he had a 2.99 ERA last season, with 202 strikeouts?

People (Cubs fans?) say Samardzija was just 7-13 last season and has a blah career record of 36-48. I will counter with the fact he regularly goes deep into games and then is let down by bad hitters and lousy relievers more times than Kate Upton has been let down by faulty brassiere structure.

His 1.07 walks and hits per inning pitched in 2014 is the best of his career. His WHIP with the A’s in the second half of the season (0.93) was his best ever. If he has arm troubles, that’s news to all.

I wore the leather mini. When Tom arrived home, he couldn’t keep his eyes or hands off me. We never made it to the party and had the best sex we’d had in years.

Before that night, our love life had been practically nonexistent.

Joint support supplements vary in effectiveness Dear Doctor K: I have osteoarthritis. It’s improved some with physical therapy and weight loss, but not entirely. Should I give “joint support” supplements a try?

Which ones?

Dear Reader: Your question reminds me of two of my patients.

“John” was a man in his 50s whose pain from arthritis in his knees made it hard for him to play pickup basketball. Physical therapy and pain medicines helped, but not completely.

“Helen” was a woman in her 60s who loved gardening. Arthritis in her knees caused pain every time she knelt to dig up or plant something. Conventional treatments helped a lot, but she still was in pain.

Many of my patients with osteoarthritis are like these two.

They benefit from physical therapy, weight loss and medications to reduce pain and inflammation.

But some, despite trying these treatments, still end up with pain, stiffness and limits on their day-today functioning. So I understand when they ask about joint support supplements.

Here are some of the more popular osteoarthritis supplements on the market and the evidence for – or against – giving them a try: • Glucosamine and chondroitin. A major study of these supplements in The New England

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff Journal of Medicine concluded that they may help relieve pain in people with moderate to severe osteoarthritis pain. If you fall into this category, try the glucosamine-chondroitin combination for two to three months. If you find it eases your pain, it’s reasonable to keep using it. If not, save your money.

• Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO and methyl sulfonyl methane (MSM). The handful of clinical trials on these substances show that they are no better than a placebo (sugar pill) when it comes to pain reduction.

• S-Adenosylmethionine (SAMe). A 2009 review looked at four clinical trials that compared SAMe against a placebo. The difference between the supplement and sugar pill was small and possibly due to chance.

• Boswellia serrata. In one review of this herbal remedy, people who took 100 milligrams (mg) of B. serrata daily for three months said their pain was moderately lower and their functioning slightly better, compared with those who took the placebo.

• Avocado soybean unsapon-

ifiables (ASU). Results from six studies of ASU, another herbal remedy, found that taking 300 mg daily for three to 12 months slightly improved pain and functioning.

I usually support my patients’ decisions to try glucosamine and chondroitin. But I warn them that just because a supplement is natural doesn’t mean it’s safe. And that supplements, like medications, can cause side effects such as stomach upset, nausea, skin rashes and allergic reactions.

More worrisome are potential drug interactions. For example, glucosamine and chondroitin could interfere with the widely used blood thinner warfarin (Coumadin). Also, the FDA does not monitor the dose and purity of supplements, as it does for conventional drugs.

My patient “John” was on warfarin for an irregular heartbeat.

Even though I monitored his dose, he had a bad nosebleed, stopped glucosamine and chondroitin and switched from basketball to swimming. “Helen” was luckier. The same supplements nearly eliminated her knee pain and produced no adverse effects.

Dr. Wallace: I hang around with a group of guys who drink alcohol once in a while. I tried it once, but I don’t like it, so I don’t touch the stuff at all. None of my friends take drugs of any kind.

All of us are athletes and we don’t want drugs to cause us to perform poorly and jeopardize our chance for a college athletic scholarship.

My dad is straight and narrow and is always griping about my friends and their drinking habits.

He keeps telling me that alcohol is as bad as drugs and that they should be ashamed of themselves for breaking training rules. I say no big deal!

If every athlete were suspended from playing sports for drinking alcohol, then a lot of schools would have to abandon high school athletics because of a lack of participants.

I’m not saying that it’s all right to drink. I’m just saying that it is worse to use drugs than alcohol.

What do you think? – Ryan, Fort Worth, Texas Dear Ryan: Sometimes people think that consuming alcohol is no big deal because it’s a legal substance for those 21 and older. A teen would not be in serious legal trouble if caught drinking a beer, but would have very serious problems if caught with cocaine or heroin.

But alcohol is, indeed, a drug and can lead to addiction. Health officials say it is the most abused drug. I have yet to find any source that found that consuming alcohol will enhance athletic proficiency, but there are many sources that give data on the hindrances caused by alcohol to athletic performance.

If your friends are good enough athletically to possibly earn an athletic scholarship to a

’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace college or university, why would they chance it for the sake of consuming alcohol?

I’d prefer my son to drink a bottle of beer than take a hit of cocaine or heroin, but I wouldn’t want him to hit anything but a ball!

Dr. Wallace: I’m a very busy teenager. I’m involved in student government, drama, music and cheerleading. I’m also in the honor club, study a lot and get good grades. I am also active in my church as a youth counselor.

Here’s my problem.

My mother has assigned me household chores.

If I don’t do them, I’m punished by not getting my allowance for a week (I get $20), and I really need the money. I’ve tried to tell my mom that it isn’t fair for a busy person like me to have to do a lot of chores during the school year. I have no complaints about doing them in the summer.

I’d like your opinion, please. – Kaylee, Atlanta, Georgia Dear Kaylee: The thing about chores is that somebody has to do them.

It would be nice if they went away during the school year and were around only in the summer when you had more time.

You are obviously a very responsible teen and a wonderful daughter, but it’s important that you fulfill your family responsibility – doing your chores well and on time. Do your chores and let some activities of low priority pass.

He was pointing out how computer analysis can affect the understanding of a position.

In bridge, hand evaluation changes as an auction proceeds.

Ask yourself two questions: How does my hand compare with what partner is expecting? How well does it fit with partner’s hand?

Look at today’s North hand.

Your right-hand opponent (West) opens one spade; you pass, East raises to two spades, partner makes a takeout double and West jumps to four spades. What would you do now, if anything?

How does your hand compare with what partner expects? It is great! You could have nothing, but you actually have 10 points.

(You might have made a takeout double over one spade.) How well does your hand fit with partner’s?

Beautifully! All of your points are in the suits he has shown.

You could double, expecting the opponents to fail (and here gain 200 points). But with everything meshing so well, you should be willing to bid five of a minor.

Now comes the hard part.

You should not guess the minor.

Instead, bid four no-trump. This isn’t Blackwood, because you cannot be strong enough to think about a slam. Instead, it shows at least two places to play and asks partner to suggest the trump suit. Here, he bids five diamonds, which you pass.
