Carrying on traditions of all kinds CHAMBER CHAT

Laura Rush Everyone can think of a tradition they have carried on – maybe one that started many decades ago. The tradition may have been modified, but the underlying idea still exists. Traditions give us a sense of familiarity and security. We are reminded of special times growing up. I feel traditions are a way to honor generations before us.

You may have a unique tradition for a specific holiday, the first day of school or even when the first flakes of snow fall. The point is, we can all think of one, and hopefully it brings a smile to our faces.

Growing up in Geneva, I was extremely fortunate to live around the corner from my grandparents. When my mom said no, Grammy always said yes and “running away” to her house was very easy. From as far back as I can remember, a Christmas tradition we had was Santa’s visit on Christmas Eve to my grandparent’s home. About an hour into the evening, pre-present opening – but post Swedish dinner – the doorbell would ring, followed by the sound of jingle bells. Coincidentally, this always would coincide with one of my uncles disappearing for an unspecified period of time. My brother and I would charge to the front door. The lock never quite worked right and was difficult to open. I now believe my grandfather – being remiss in getting it fixed – was actually part of a grand getting-the-door-opendelay tactic.

While my parents were commenting on the reindeer prints in the snow and assuring us they saw a glimpse of Santa as he flew away, we anxiously picked up the presents that were placed on the doorstep. I felt so special thinking Santa made a special stop just for me.

As the years went by, the three of us got older and this excitement was reserved for my younger cousins – until Christmas Eve 1985.

I was a senior at Geneva

High School and, like my friends, was eagerly awaiting my college acceptance in the mail. My best friend, and later my college roommate, had already received hers, so my anticipation was on high alert.

The doorbell rang, the bells jingled and the little ones scurried to the door. I was being cool, sitting with the adults, when one of my younger cousins brought me a present. A shirt size box that was very light. I was a bit

confused, as it had been years since I had been part of this tradition. I thought because my cousins were getting a little wiser, they may have questioned why I hadn’t been receiving a gift, so this was just to appease them. Hence, I did what anyone with a present on their lap would do. Tore the wrapping paper away and pulled the top of the box off.

What came next, nobody was expecting. A very loud – some family members say deafening – scream. It was my acceptance to University of Illinois that had come earlier in the week and my parents wrapped it up. My 90-plus great-grandfather, who had trouble hearing, was jarred out of his seat. I was ecstatic to be part of the tradition again.

We now have Christmas Eve at our home. We have modified it a bit as family is mixed with friends, and the Swedish dinner has gone by the wayside. However, Santa still rings the doorbell and his jingle bells still can be heard. My children don’t receive presents anymore, but my cousins’ children do. And it still is as sensational as it was all that time ago. Maybe this year, Santa will leave a little something for my daughter and son, just for tradition’s sake. Too bad my daughter’s acceptance to Drake already arrived.

Celebrating the holidays in Geneva is a tradition that never grows old for me.

Book by Batavia family puts face to teen depression

ATAVIA – On the outside, Batavia High School junior Brooklyn Belair seems like your typical bubbly, fun-loving teenager.

But since the eighth grade, Belair said she has battled anxiety and depression. That battle is documented in the recently published book, “Brooklyn’s Battle: A Daughter’s War with Anxiety and Depression.”

The book is authored by Belair’s mother, Kimberly Loveday. Belair contributed her poetry and prose to the book.

“Until I had read her poetry, I didn’t know what it was like for her,” Loveday said.

Belair is not alone in her battle. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, about 11 percent of adolescents have a depressive disorder by age 18. The book is dedicated to the memory of Batavia High School students Quincee Ariel Barnes-Miller, Dylan Wagner and Marmion Academy student Ben Wilkinson of Batavia. All committed suicide in the last three years.

Their suicides hit home for Loveday.

“It was when Dylan and Quincee committed suicide that I kind of stepped back and was like, ‘Wow, this could be really happening in my house,’ and started looking for the changes that were going on and reached out and got some help,” Loveday said.

“It was at that point that we realized how serious things were for her.”

For Belair, her poetry represented a way to express her feelings. She said it was a way to get something out in a creative way.

Belair’s therapist had suggested she publish her poetry.

“Her therapist was using it with other clients,” Loveday said. “The therapist had suggested that she publish her poetry because it had been helping a lot of her other clients.”

sion was being diagnosed last year with reflex sympathetic dystrophy/complex regional pain syndrome after suffering a sprained ankle at a Batavia High School cheer camp.

It is a chronic systemic disease characterized by severe pain, swelling and changes in the skin.

Belair had planned to be a cheerleader in college.

“It can happen after a minor injury,” Loveday said “There is no cure.”

Belair said she is trying to stay positive, despite the injury, she said “last year was

pretty bad after the initial diagnosis.”

“There’s just a lot more in store for life,” she said.

“There is always something to live for.”

Belair said she hopes the book helps remove the shame and stigma of having anxiety and depression and that it will compel other teenagers to seek help. Belair is part of Party in the Park, which hopes to educate the public about depression while raising money for Batavia-based Suicide Prevention Services of America.

In July, the event raised more than $11,000 for Suicide Prevention Services of America. Party in the Park organizer Emily Roberts said she appreciated Belair’s efforts to put a spotlight on the issue of teen depression.

“Brooklyn and her story really embody the vision of Party in the Park,” Belair said. “The ultimate goal is getting more teens to reach out when they are in trouble.”

Thanks to Mother Nature disrupting the Sugar Grove residents’ plans to spend the weekend out of town, Hubbard and her daughters – Savannah, 4, and Abby, 1½ – were able to participate in Saturday’s holiday activities, which included breakfast with Santa, a cake walk and children’s crafts.

Activities were held at four locations, including John Shields Elementary School and Sugar Grove United Methodist Church.

By late morning, the Hubbards had visited the Sugar Grove Public Library for face painting and visited with Santa Claus at the Sugar Grove Community House.

Seeing Santa was, Hubbard said, “Savannah’s first thing

she wanted to do.”

With temperatures well below freezing Saturday, Holiday in the Grove organizer Diana Baker said she wasn’t sure how the weather would affect attendance. But, she said, two of the three breakfast times sold out – each could accommodate about 150 people – and at one point about 200 people were in the Community Building during a performance by the Kaneland Youth Orchestra.

And, judging by the number of brochures taken at John Shields Elementary School, Baker estimated attendance had reached 400 by noon.

“It has been going very well,” Baker said while overseeing the raffle table among the holiday craft show vendors.

In another room, several children, including 6-yearold Nicholas Casey, gathered around a storyteller reading a holiday tale.

“We come every year,” the Sugar Grove boy’s mother, Cara Casey, said.

In addition to liking the craft vendors, she said, they enjoy decorating cookies with Mrs. Claus and the library’s activities. It also is easier to get a picture with Santa at Holiday in the Grove than at a mall, Casey said.

Rudy Zeithammel of Lombard brought his daughter, 2½-year-old Grace, to the event to socialize with friends from Sugar Grove.

While the father and daughter didn’t make it for breakfast, the girl got her picture taken with Santa, Zeithammel said. He noted they planned to spend about half a day there before partaking in holiday events in their hometown.

Plans for next year’s Holiday in the Grove – set for Dec. 6 – will begin in January, Baker said.

While the volunteers have been fabulous, she said, the organizing committee needs more members. She directed interested individuals to the event’s website, www.holidayinthegrove.com, for contact information.

ST. CHARLES – Rita Tungare, director of St. Charles Community Development, has been recommended to fill the city’s vacant position as director of the Community and Economic Development Department, according to a news release from the city.

The Planning and Development Committee was slated to review the recommen- Rita Tungare dation Monday evening. Pending the committee’s approval, the recommendation would go before the full City Council for consideration at its Dec. 16 meeting.

Should Tungare be appointed as director of the Community and Economic Development Department, she would be responsible for overseeing both the economic and community development functions, states the release.

Upon council approval, the search would begin to fill a position for an Economic Development Division Manager.

If appointed, Tungare would replace Chris Aiston, who retired from his post as economic development director in July. Michael Mertes left his job as economic development coordinator in July for a job in another suburb.

Tungare assisted the city in rewriting its comprehensive plan, as well as managed many redevelopment projects including First Street, Lexington Club, Eastgate Commons

and Charlestowne Mall, according to the release.

Mayor Ray Rogina said he anticipates saving about $100,000 a year by combining the Economic Development and Community Development departments under one umbrella, which he said he anticipates also will add more efficiencies to the newly formed Community and Economic Development Department. He said the Economic development division manager also is a new position.

“Rita was the logical choice. I’m ecstatic about it,” Rogina said, noting that she played an integral role in restructuring the two departments. “I don’t think we’ll miss one beat combining two departments at all. We’ll be just as effective moving forward.”

Tungare has been with the city of St. Charles since 2000, when she started as a community planner. In 2001, she was promoted to senior planner and became assistant director of Community Development in 2006. She has held her position as director of Community Development since 2008.

Prior to working in St. Charles, Tungare worked as senior planner for the village of Addison.

She holds a master’s degree in urban planning from the University of Illinois at Chicago, a master’s degree in architecture from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana and a bachelor’s degree in architecture from the University of Bombay, India. She also is accredited by the American Institute of Certified Planners.

Board approves resignation of STC teacher

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The District 303 Board of Education on Monday voted to approve the resignation of the St. Charles middle school teacher accused of having and distributing child pornography.

The St. Charles School District 303 Board approved Jerome McCauley’s resignation, effective Dec. Jerome 3, according to McCauley agenda documents.

Superintendent Don Schlomann, who had indicated the school board would begin the process for dismissing McCauley, said without McCauley’s resignation, it could have taken up to 90 days to complete the dismissal process.

In addition to multiple school board meetings, he said that process could have involved a hearing process, which would be a lot like a trial, only in front of the school board. Schlomann said Mc-

Cauley submitted his resignation sometime last week.

“It’s beneficial certainly for the school district. It saved us legal fees and time,” Schlomann said. “I suspect it helped him because it allowed him to focus his resources on his criminal defense.”

The 45-year-old Sycamore resident was charged Oct. 28 on charges of having between 1,000 and 1,500 images and five to 10 videos of child pornography, some showing 12-yearold girls, according to DeKalb County court records.

His bond was set at $1 million, which a DeKalb County judge declined to reduce last month.

McCauley taught at Wredling Middle School and worked for District 303 for nearly 20 years, district officials have said.

He was placed on administrative leave without pay once district officials learned of the charges against him.

McCauley is next expected in court Jan. 9 for a status hearing.

No interim director for library board

GENEVA – Samuel J. Difazzio, 90, of Geneva and formerly of West Chicago, died Friday, Dec. 6, 2013, at Greenfields of Geneva.

He was born Feb. 11, 1923, in Geneva, to Dominic and Pasquala Difazzio.

From 1960 to 1987, Sam was an inspector for the DuPage County Building and Zoning Department.

For over 15 years, he volunteered for the West Chicago Fire Department. Beside the love for his family, Sam enjoyed his cottage in Michigan, gardening and his friends he made at Greenfields of Geneva.

Sam is survived by his sons, Jim (Gail) of Elburn, Jerry (Judy) of St. Charles and Tom (Naomi Bronski) of Lanark; four grandchildren, Jeff, Kris, Jacob and Justin; three great-grandchildren, Alec, Jessica and James; two sisters, Margaret Buss of Glen Ellyn and Santa Conde of Texas; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lorraine; two brothers, Tony and Santo; and two sisters, Jennie Savegnago and Annie Emma.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 12, at St. Peter Catholic Church, 1891 Kaneville Road, Geneva.

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The average St. Charles homeowner likely will see an increase of 2.5 percent or less in the school district portion of the property tax bill now that the District 303 School Board has approved its 2013 tax levy.

The board approved the tax levy Monday evening for an aggregate tax levy of $161,253,257.

Seth Chapman, the district’s chief financial officer, told the board that the average homeowner likely would

The board also approved a debt service levy abatement for 2013 in the sum of $1.8 million.

Chapman said the district’s debt service will drop by $16 million by 2017, when it will go from $22 million to $6 million. In the past two

years, the district has abated $4.3 million.

“We have expiring debt service in 2017 and the Board of Education is trying to be cognizant of that,” Superintendent Don Schlomann said.

“For two years, we were able to lower that by $4.3 million.

You’re abating that increase so it’s not nearly as much impact on taxpayers.”

Patti Lopuszanksi, who spoke during public comment during the tax levy hearing, questioned why the

special education fund was more than $10 million in the 2013 levy when last year, she said, it was about $2 million.

“Is there a reason that increase is so significant?” she asked. “I really have not read about program changes for next year.”

Schlomann explained that each individual fund within the levy is, “in some respect,” interchangeable.

“It’s just a matter of bookkeeping as to where they are,” he said. “There is an in-

crease in costs, but not by the tune of $8 million.”

While the difference between this year’s and last year’s special education fund doesn’t mean the increase will be as much as $8 million, board member Kathleen Hewell said she thinks there needs to be an increase in special education funding because the state isn’t paying as much as it used to.

“We can see the students, multiple students, who are costing the district $100,000 a year,” she said. “I’m not defending it; I’m saying we’re stuck doing it.”

The total levy request for 2013 is nearly $80 million.

The board could have approved the maximum allowable extension of 1.7 percent, or more than $80.5 million, but voted to levy nearly $650,000 less.

The district’s 2012 levy was $78.5 million.

The percent that can be requested is based on the consumer price index.

Taxing bodies in Illinois make their levy requests to the county based on what they need and the equalized assessed value of property within the district.

The 1 percent levy request would increase property taxes on a house with a fair market value at $315,000 by $305, officials said.

Sandra Ellis of the taxpayer watchdog group, TaxFACTS, said even a zero percent levy would bring in more than $2 million to the education fund, Ellis

said.

“When are you going to stop the trend of increasing the tax levy?” Ellis said.

“You should vote ‘no’ on increasing [the] levy tonight.”

TaxFACTS co-founder Bob McQuillan said enrollment has declined, but expenditures increase.

“We are now in a situation where the assessed value on our homes and the enrollment is declining – and district costs are rising,” McQuillan said. “Where does this nightmare end?”

“I think we are levying what we should at 1 percent,” Lamb said. “We are going to be drawing down our reserves.”

McCormick cast the lone “no” vote, as he did when the board voted on the levy resolution last month.

McCormick supported a zero percent levy increase.

Retiring library director celebrated at reception

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Diana Brown – whose name for some is synonymous with the St. Charles Public Library – celebrated 39 years of service Sunday during a retirement reception held in her honor.

“It’s just been a wonderful, wonderful experience,” Brown said.

Brown, who has served as library director for 35 years, is retiring at the end of the year.

In a brief program, representatives from the St. Charles Public Library District Board of Trustees, St. Charles Public Library Foundation and the city commended Brown for her service.

“We simply cannot thank you enough, Diana,” said Roman Seckel, foundation president.

Mayor Ray Rogina read from a proclamation honoring Brown’s dedication and leadership to the community.

“Diana Brown’s leadership has caused the St. Charles Public Library to become an integral part of the fabric and culture of the city of St. Charles,” Rogina said. “… Diana Brown has accomplished all of this while leading with creativity, foresight, respect and integrity.”

were good friends with Brown. She was “beyond kind” to them when they got older, Craig said, noting she and her brother had moved out of town.

“She is just a dear, dear, dear person,” Craig said. “I know the community benefits tremendously from her spirit of giving.”

Pam Salomone, the library’s communications and marketing manager, said Brown does what she does from the heart – not so that she can receive accolades.

“It’s been an honor to work with her,” Salomone said.

Youth Services Manager A. Denise Farrugia said in 25 years, her department has grown both in staff – three employees to 16 – and in collection size, which is more than 140,000 items. She said Brown enabled the growth by fully supporting the department so that it could be responsive to the community’s needs.

Farrugia described the St. Charles Public Library and community as “such a perfect fit” for Brown, and Salomone added that – for many – the library and Brown are interchangeable.

“Everything the library is is because of Diana,” library board President Tory Haines said.

Colin Brown – Brown’s son – said his mother’s work with the library was an avenue for her to serve the community.

“We’re all proud of her,” he said.

Morton Grove Public Library Director Pam Leffler has been chosen as Brown’s successor. She is expected to begin Jan. 2.

Deadline looms for proposed church redevelopment

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Developers have until Jan. 17 to submit their qualifications for the redevelopment of the former First Baptist Church building in downtown Batavia.

Aldermen in August approved a staff recommendation that the city issue a request for qualifications for potential purchasers, and that the purchasers be given the option to maintain or demolish the entire facility.

The deadline for those to submit their qualifications is 4 p.m. Jan. 17. There will be a pre-submittal conference at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Batavia Government Center, 100 N. Island Ave., to answer questions about the process.

Aldermen in 2005 approved the purchase of the building for $715,000 as part of a project to straighten the Route 25 jog.

But the city and the Illinois Department of Transportation have dropped the project in part because there is no money to pay for it, and

city officials said the project would cause more problems than it would solve.

In 2009, S.B. Friedman, a Chicago-based company aldermen had hired to assist the city in the redevelopment of the building, suggested the site could be used for townhouses, condominiums, offices and stores.

City officials have said they would like to get the building back on the tax rolls. A Northbrook-based firm, WJE, has estimated it will cost at least $3.1 million to repair the former First Baptist Church building at the corner of Washington and Wilson streets in downtown Batavia so the building can be reused.

The firm has inspected the building and recommended repairs be made to the exterior and interior of the 1889 church, 1930s addition and 1959 classroom wing, as well as the building’s mechanical systems.

The firm recommended the city budget between $3.1 million and $3.5 million for the work.

OPINIONS LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Our God-given intelligence To the Editor: Last month, I was asking grown folks where they were on Nov. 22, 1963. One lady replied: “Third-grade classroom, and another teacher came and spoke to our teacher, and it got very quiet. School was dismissed.”

I always continue to ask with regards to the lone gunman claim offered by the Warren Commission and U.S. government. The woman stated, “The government thinks the public is stupid.”

Why were one ambassador, one information officer and two security personnel – both former Navy SEALs – murdered in Benghazi?

Did the security personnel have no weapons in which to defend our embassy? There was a call for backup ... none came.

Jay Carney said it was “... a long time ago.” Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said, “ ... what difference does it make ... ?” U.S. government

blames a video shown that day or the day before the attack.

“The government thinks the public is stupid.”

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said with reference to the housing bubble burst that they never thought it would be that bad.

The hedge fund speculators that bet the bubble would burst made billions.

In Illinois, the pension issue has been brewing for decades – only recently has Springfield cried an alarm about who is going to pay.

So, when the next election rolls around, let the American public reflect our God-given intelligence.

A little-noticed benefit of health care reform THE WASHINGTON POST Should you get surgery for your back pain or stick with physical therapy? When is heart surgery preferable to drug treatment? And which drugs should you take?

Before too long, thanks to the Affordable Care Act, you might get some answers.

Doctors, hospitals and researchers often don’t have the information they need to gauge the effectiveness of one test or treatment against another – or against none.

That’s one reason they order too many tests, prescribe too many drugs and encourage too many medical procedures. That wastes money – perhaps hundreds of billions of dollars every year – and exposes patients to unneces-

sary risks and side effects.

One little-heralded part of President Barack Obama’s health care reform law proposes to change that, possibly transforming medical practice for the better – but also probably inciting renewed political warfare over health care “rationing.”

In July, the government began collecting a small tax on health insurers and sending the proceeds to the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute – or PCORI – an advisory committee tasked with ushering in a new era of medical care based on comparative effectiveness researchasically, rigorous review of what works and what doesn’t. The panel will have about $3 billion to spend through the end

of the decade. One of PCORI’s latest grants went to set up a research network that will pull in data on patient experiences across the country, a task that could get much easier with the increasing use of digital medical records.

Imagine thousands of data points on the fate of those who took one hypertension drug rather than another.

The concept is simple enough. The government should have delved into this sort of research with such ambition many years ago, as health care costs rose steadily above inflation. Yet there are challenges. Maybe a treatment affects women differently from men, or the young more than the old.

The statisticians will have to tease out those and other

confounding effects. Results will not always be clear.

Even when they are, people will have to be convinced.

Many will resist giving up a test or a drug they have come to trust, even if it’s proven ineffective. Consider the backlash when government researchers recommended that younger women stop getting regular mammograms. Doctors who make their living from certain treatments will warn of dire consequences to their patients’ health. That’s why financial incentives also will have to be reformed.

PCORI will encounter its share of political dogfights.

Republicans will invoke the specter of government-imposed rationing. Some have already tried to ax the panel.

Democrats will balk at the committee’s research as heartless number crunching. Removing ineffective treatment from the health care system will be far from painless.

But the alternative – throwing money into the cash-gobbling health care industry with little measurement or accountability – should be much less tolerable.

In fact, the Affordable Care Act’s comparative effectiveness provisions don’t go far enough; the law bars the government from examining the cost effectiveness of medical practices in the most straightforward way. That analysis should at least be available for the public to consider.

For the first half of high school, Jesko compensated for the team void by playing setter for the Geneva boys volleyball team after swimming ended.

He took to volleyball spontaneously a few years ago, simply playing with a ball that had been lying

around. Swimming struck him much more deeply and at a younger age, as Jesko turned the early influence of his mother, Julie, into a passion.

That helps explain why Jesko elected to give up boys volleyball this season. Jesko said Academy Bullets, his new club after an earlier stint with St. Charles Swim Team, requires members of its elite program participate in no other extra curriculars.

“It was hard because I do miss the sport, but I knew that swimming is something I want to do in college and swimming is something I’ve been geared toward for the majority of my life,” Jesko said.

Geneva junior Nathan Jesko qualified for the IHSA boys swimming and diving state meet in the 100-yard backstroke last season while narrowly missing the cut in the 100 butterfly.

If things went his way, he’d focus only on a few events again this winter.

Trouble is, Jesko competes for the Academy Bullets club, and only represents the Vikings when the state series comes each February because Geneva does not have a pool or field a team.

“It’s hard to specialize because there’s so much room for so many events, so they just put you in everything,” Jesko said.

Call it an inconvenient truth that could have Jesko on his way to conveniently expanding his profile.

Although he may turn his attention toward a fraction of races in two months, Jesko knows the club scene only is making him stronger.

Jesko leads a group of at least four fellow Vikings in that endeavor. Sophomores Eric Dallesasse, Cody Heckendorf, Tim Hope and Connor Todd might not train together much, if at all, during November, December and January, but are united for sectionals and hopefully beyond.

Geneva social studies teacher Mary Keyzer, a former swimmer at Yorkville – which also does not offer a team – doubles as a coach and requisite faculty reprentative during the state series. She’s set to meet with her five returners and any potential freshmen swim-

That being said, Jesko also is focused on club nationals, and may not follow the same tapering pattern for IHSA events as the athletes he’ll compete against.

Still, as with any swimmer, short-term goals find ways of jumping to the forefront when Jesko walks on deck.

“We all want to qualify for state,” he said, “so it’s just a competitive atmosphere, and it’s all positive.”

Negron had nine rebounds and swatted a couple shots in Larkin’s 82-65 win over East, and he figures to become even more of a force as he acclimates to high school basketball. Royals coach Deryn Carter said the more minutes for Negron, the better.

“We just want him playing, to be real honest,” Carter said. “He’s got a lot of athletic ability, he’s got a lot of skill set. The more he can play, the more he can get out here and just kind of go with the flow, the better

“We don’t have any role for him because we want him to just continue to improve every day.”

Batavia boys basketball coach Jim Nazos is a defensive-minded guy, so it comes as little surprise that he’s pointing to that end of the floor as the Bulldogs’ biggest room for improvement in the coming weeks.

“I think we have the ability to score,” Nazos said. “What we’ve really got to do is take the next step defensively.

To beat really good teams, we’ve got to be able to hang in a game when offensively we’re not playing that well.

That’s got to be the next step for us. If we’re not doing well offensively, well, we better be around it so when it happens, it’s in [striking] distance to maybe get it at the end. It’s not happening right now.”

The Bulldogs also figure to take a step forward when Micah Coffey and Tucker Knox return to form. Both jumped in last week just days after completing their 14-game football journey that ended with a Class 6A state championship.

“They’re not as good right now as they’re going to be next week and even the following week, but they’re two of our guys who I think understand the things we want to do defensively,” Nazos said. “ … They’re going to get there because they understand what it takes to get to that spot.

“They’re two good leaders for us and they’re going to do nothing but get better, and we’re going to get better.”

The Northern Illinois senior quarterback was named a finalist for the Heisman Trophy on Monday. He was so excited that he tweeted he was a finalist about five minutes before the official announcement was made on ESPN by 1996 winner Danny Wuerffel.

“NYC here I come!! Thanks to the coaches teammates and media relation couldn’t of did it wt out them!” he posted.

Lynch then deleted the tweet and resent a different version later.

He will join Auburn running back Tre Jordan Lynch Mason, Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron, Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston, Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel and Boston College running back Andre Williams.

It is the first time since 1994 that more than five finalists have been chosen to attend the Heisman’s presentation ceremony, which will be at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Best Buy Theater in Times Square.

“It’s a great honor and a great accomplishment, but I couldn’t do it without my coaches, teammates, family and the support staff,” Lynch said. “It’s hard [to be selected from a nonautomatic-qualifier school]. One of the big-

gest things is you have to win games, have a winning team and your stats have to separate you from the bigger schools. I knew if I had a chance to get there, it would be a good individual season, and I knew it would take a great year as a team for us.”

Lynch led the Huskies to a 12-1 record this season and a berth in the Poinsettia Bowl.

He broke his single-season record for rushing yards by an FBS quarterback with 1,881 yards and has accounted for a school-record 46 touchdowns this season.

Lynch finished seventh in the voting last year after leading the Huskies to their first Bowl Championship Series bowl game in program history where they lost to Florida State, 31-10, in the Orange Bowl.

“This is a great honor for him and it recognizes the great career he has had,” NIU coach Rod Carey said in a news release. “It is so well-deserved that he gets to go to New York. I’m also very happy for NIU, that along with Jordan’s accomplishments, our team and our university will be put on center stage in New York.”

Lynch becomes the first player in NIU history to be named a finalist for the Heisman. The Huskies have had standout players in the past, but none of them made it to New York. Running back LeShon Johnson finished sixth in 1993 after leading the nation in rushing and Michael Turner failed to crack the top 10 during NIU’s 10-2 season in 2003.

Within a few moments Sunday afternoon, Steven Fassnacht heard Greg Purnell transform from St. Francis football coach to former St. Francis football coach with an announcement at the end of the team’s postseason banquet.

More than a day later, the Spartans’ junior running back/safety still was marveling at the way Purnell didn’t change his tone while retiring after a lengthy career.

Telling players that “it was time,” Fassnacht said, Purnell, 66, will step down after seven seasons but remain in his role in St. Francis’ development office. He was 47-26 with the Spartans and guided the team to the Class 5A state title in 2008, one of the final jewels of a nearly three-decade run that began in his native Iowa.

“I was surprised he kept his composure,” Fassnacht said. “All that time and after that many years to step away from something like that, I was surprised.”

Marmion coach Dan Thorpe, who learned of the news through Purnell’s email to several Suburban Christian Conference counterparts Monday, called the move “a loss for high school football, a loss for St. Francis.”

Indeed, Thorpe felt strongly about Purnell, who held just as tightly to his Wing-T offense until this season, which ended with the Greg Purnell Spartans’ fifth playoff berth in the Purnell era.

“Nobody ran the Wing-T better than Greg Purnell,” Thorpe said. “His state championship team was three plays, and you knew they were going to run it and he knew they were going to run it, and doggone it they ran it down your throat and they won a state championship.”

Purnell, who could not be reached for comment, won three state championships at Linn-Marr High in Marion, Iowa, helping him earn enshrinement in the state’s

football coaching hall of fame.

In the years before taking the St. Francis job, Purnell went on a coaching sabbatical as he recovered from hip replacement surgery and advanced his profile in high school and college development offices.

As St. Francis’ major gifts officer and annual fund director, he helped raise funds for numerous projects, including Kuhn Memorial Stadium, which opened for what proved to be his final season.

“It’s a mix of phone calls and lunches, breakfasts, coffees, dinners,” St. Francis President Tom Bednar said.

“It’s amazing the time that he puts into both.”

Bednar said Purnell often met alumni or potential donors early on a Saturday before a football practice or game.

Fassnacht expects similar multitasking next fall, and for however long Purnell keeps working at the school.

“He loves football so much,” Fassnacht said, “I doubt he’ll be able to stop thinking about it.”

Gritty North Stars top East

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A pajama-clad St. Charles North student section stormed the court Saturday after its muses put an important early-season argument to bed.

North boasts the better boys basketball team in St. Charles right now, as a physical 68-58 Upstate Eight Conference River Division victory against East prepared the North Stars for the mosh pit that was to come.

Efficient defense and rebounding powered host North (5-1, 2-0 UEC River) in a game that saw both teams struggle from the field.

“We worked all week on getting boards and box-outs in our zone,” North senior forward Erik Miller said. “We take a lot of pride in that zone, you know.

It works.”

Shooting woes also sprouted when the schools’ girls’ teams met to open the crosstown doubleheader, but East eventually got untracked for a 72-68 win.

On the boys side, the Saints (2-4, 0-2 UEC River) ultimately were relegated to hoisting deep 3s and fouling the North Stars – who converted 15 of 22 fourth-quarter free throws – down the stretch.

After the game, East coach Pat Woods stressed that patience would only benefit his team in the long-term, which includes a Jan. 18 rematch with North. With guard Cole Gentry (back) only recently returning to the lineup and center David Mason still mending from a broken foot, the Saints aren’t working with their full complement of options.

By STEPHEN BOURBON editorial@kcchronicle.com CHAMPAIGN – One day after thrashing rival Batavia by 21 points, the Geneva boys basketball team looked flat against Bloomington.

Down by 13 points midway through the third quarter, Geneva junior Nate Navigato wouldn’t allow his team to lose.

Navigato put the team on his back in the second half and finished with a career-high 41 points in a 61-57 win against the Purple Raiders at the Country Financial Centennial Shootout at the University of Illinois on Saturday.

Navigato was an efficient 10 for 12 from the floor, but made an equal impact from the charity free-throw line hitting 19 of 23 attempts.

Navigato scored 33 of his points after halftime.

“He played a whale of a game,” Geneva head coach Phil Ralston said. “He’s al-

ready got three offers and close to 20 schools looking at him. Anyone who saw him tonight knows why; he pretty much has the whole game.”

The Purple Raiders looked as though they might run away with the game, pushing their lead to 39-26 early in the third quarter.

But Bloomington had no answer for Navigato, and he brought Geneva (6-1) back into the game.

“Coach always tells me that if you’re not shooting when you’re open, you’re being selfish by passing,” Navigato said. “I take that to heart, and if I’m open, I have confidence that I can score.”

The junior earned a layup and the foul to bring the lead to 39-28 and an ensuing technical foul on Bloomington’s Jacob Romani gave the Vikings two additional free throws and the ball.

From that point on, Navigato went on a personal 15-2 run to put the Vikings ahead, 43-41. The two teams traded

blows down the stretch, but a technical on Bloomington head coach Michael Mosley gave Geneva the lead to end the game.

The Vikings jumped out to a quick 12-5 lead behind six points from Navigato, though the Purple Raiders would respond in the second quarter and make a run to take the lead before halftime.

Bloomington went on a 17-7 run in the second quarter and was fueled by Geneva turnovers against the Purple Raiders’ full-court press.

But there was too much Navigato down the stretch, and the Vikings pulled out a win after not playing up to Ralston’s standards for much of the game.

“We took a timeout and I told the kids we’ve abandoned everything we said we were going to do in this game,” Ralston said. “We said one of our keys was to get the ball inside on them, and Nate took over from there.”

North coach Sean Masoncup called the sequence the

difference in the game, but his team still was in position to seize control late. East’s 12 second-half free-throws to North’s three ultimately proved the difference. A rebounding edge helped, too.

“I felt like we had control of the game a majority of the time and kept our fans cheering, which was huge,” Hilton said. “It picked us up, we were all supportive, and when it came down to the big plays, we made them. It was great.”

Guard Katie Claussner secured arguably the biggest rebound down the stretch, hustling to corral her miss after splitting a pair of free throws.

Moments later, she found Kyra Washington for a lay-in that put East ahead, 67-62.

Separate Sam Novak 3s in the closing minute weren’t enough.

“The great thing about these kids is they never give up,” Masoncup said. “I’ve got great kids and I’m proud of them, and we’ve talking about getting close and getting over that hump of how to win a basketball game.”

So it is possible to buy a piece of jewelry by Alexander Calder for far less than one of his large mobiles. Or an electric fan or pedal car designed by Viktor Schreckengost, who is best known for making the ceramic “Jazz Bowl,” an icon that has sold for as much as $200,000. Works by famous artists can be part of your collection if you buy war bond posters (Norman Rockwell) or advertising figures (Maxfield Parrish) or teapots (Michael Graves). Lockwood de Forest (1850-1932) was an American artist and decorator who worked in the American Orientalist style, influenced by his travels in India and the Middle East. By 1915, he had moved to California, and his paintings were typical California landscapes. Today collectors are again searching for some of his furniture, jewelry and textiles made after 1879 at the Ahmedabad Wood Carving Co. and later at Tiffany.

De Forest’s furniture was modeled after chairs he had seen in Indian palaces. It was hand-crafted of teak, brass and other materials.

A pair of 1881 chairs designed by de Forest sold for $242,500 at Bonhams New York in Sept. 2013.

But bidding on the chairs may have gone that high because de Forest used them in his own home - and they were later purchased

by William Randolph Hearst, the famous newspaper publisher.

A: Mottahedeh & Co. was founded in 1929 by Rafi and Mildred Mottahedeh. The couple had the largest privately held collection of Chinese Export porcelain in the world at that time.

The company made reproductions of pieces in the collection as well as copies of other fine china. The reproductions were sold at Tiffany and Co. and gift shops. Mottahedeh also made reproductions of museum pieces, including items made of porcelain, brass, crystal, silver and stoneware. It has made reproductions for the White House, the State Department and several museums and historical sites.

The company was sold in 1992, but it’s still in business, making reproductions. It has headquarters in Cranbury, N.J. A: Durable Toy & Novelty Co. invented a single-coin Uncle Sam’s register bank in 1906. The three-coin version was first made in 1923. It was made of cold rolled steel, and instructions for operating the bank were painted on the back. The bank accepts nickels, dimes and quarters and can’t be opened until $10 has been deposited. Western Stamping Co. bought Durable Toy & Novelty Co. in 1958 and continued to make the three-coin bank until the 1980s.

Production was moved to Asia in the 1960s, and the bank was then made of tin instead of steel. The

At 66, he has an uneasy relationship with the pedestal – the one that he at once covets, disdains and sometimes doubts he deserves. The one that people want to place him upon – except when they don’t, during those dispiriting droughts when the music-buying public all but forgets him.

He certified himself a contender for the guitar-hero crown almost from the start, in a band that took his last name, at Woodstock in 1969.

His frenzied solo on “Soul Sacrifice” went old-school viral, thanks to the film of the hippie music festival.

There followed a series of pioneering albums that almost single-handedly invented pop world-beat music. The congas, timbales and Afro-Latin guitar and organ rhythms on smash covers such as “Black Magic Woman/Gypsy Queen” and “Oye Como Va” redefined the parameters of rock-and-roll.

“I don’t consider myself a guitar player as much as I am a seeker who wants to manifest his vision through that particular instrument,” he said in 1978.

Then, seemingly out of nowhere, his 1999 album, “Supernatural,” won nine Grammys, posted astronomical sales and lodged Santana in the download queue of a new generation. On nearly every track, his guitar accompanied – shared the pedestal with – a trendier singer, such as Dave Matthews, Rob Thomas of Matchbox Twenty, Everlast and Lauryn Hill.

“I’m not a poodle who you just throw a little bone or a biscuit to, and I dance for you, man. That’s why, perhaps, when they’re celebrating this Mexican, Carlos Santana, at the Kennedy Center in Washington, it’s

a big canasta [that is being honored]. Canasta is like a basket, with not just a guitar [inside], but a person who loves uplifting consciousness.”

He deems the Kennedy Center’s history of having rarely honored Latinos to be typical of so many American institutions trapped in an Anglo-European thrall. Yet he considers it no favor to be cast in the self-limiting role of one of the two Latinos (along with opera singer Martina Arroyo) being honored this year, to help correct that record. True, he was born in Autlan de Navarro, Mexico, and honed his guitar chops in the streets and dives of Tijuana.

But the identity that matters most to Santana – his artistic and spiritual self – is bigger, embracing roots from Mali to Haiti to Cuba to

the Mississippi Delta.

“I’m more than just a Mexican with a blower on the presidential lawn at the White House,” he says. “I represent a whole bunch of other people.”

Even though he has recorded and toured with jazz keyboardist Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter, a little, insecure part of Santana has always worried that he couldn’t keep up with such aces.

“I’m still learning the difference between respect and fear,” he says. “They all say the same thing to me: You’re one of us. But as soon as I’m in the room, and they start playing, I’m like, oh, damn. Because they’re so – I’ll say it like this: They are an ocean. I’m a big lake.

Someone else is a swimming pool. I’m somewhere in the middle.”

Wife hoping for baby wants man to stop using drugs Dear Abby: My husband and I want to start a family, but until now our circumstances have not made this possible. After a big move and starting a new business, we have decided it’s about time.

My problem is my husband uses drugs to relieve stress. I don’t feel he abuses them; it just takes the edge off after a hard day’s work like a glass of wine does for me sometimes. I would like him to stop taking the drugs while we are trying to conceive in case it could affect the baby.

Relief from hemorrhoids comes from simple strategies Dear Doctor K: What are some self-help strategies to treat hemorrhoids?

Dear Reader: Hemorrhoids are a common but painful and uncomfortable problem. Fortunately, simple measures can ease most hemorrhoid discomfort and help them heal.

Hemorrhoids are swollen veins. Veins carry blood back to the heart. Hemorrhoids can develop in the anus and the rectum, just inside the anus. Many people have both. These swollen blood vessels can bleed. When they get inflamed, they can make bowel movements intensely painful. (I’ve put an illustration of hemorrhoids on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

I spoke with my long-time colleague Dr. Jacqueline Wolf, a gastroenterologist and associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. She offered this advice to care for hemorrhoids: • Step up the fiber. Start by adding fiber to your diet. Fiber makes stools softer and easier to pass. It also reduces bleeding.

Aim for 25 to 30 grams a day.

The best food sources of fiber include beans, broccoli, carrots, bran, whole grains and fresh fruits. You can also take a fiber

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff supplement. Try an over-thecounter powder such as psyllium (Metamucil) or methylcellulose (Citrucel). Some of my patients prefer the newer soluble fiber preparations, such as dextrin.

(There are several brand names, but you can find dextrin in the “ingredients” list on the bottle.)

To avoid bloating and gas, add fiber to your diet gradually over several days.

Dr. Wolf also recommends the following during flare-ups: Mix a tablespoon of mineral oil with applesauce or yogurt and eat it at breakfast or lunch.

This allows stool to slide by more easily.

• Strain less. Don’t sit or strain on the toilet for long periods of time. This can cause more hemorrhoids and worsen symptoms.

• Don’t delay bowel movements during flare-ups. Putting off bowel movements can worsen constipation, aggravating hemorrhoids. Elevate your feet with a step-stool as you sit on the toilet.

Doing so changes the position of the rectum, making stools easier to pass.

• Consider off-the-shelf remedies. Many over-the-counter products, such as witch hazel-infused pads and soothing creams, are effective. Your doctor can also prescribe stronger preparations if needed.

• Don’t forget sitz baths. Simply soaking the inflamed area in warm water can help reduce inflammation and discomfort. The easiest way to do this is to sit in a bathtub filled with enough water to soak your behind. Some people alternate hot and cold water baths; some add vinegar, salt or baking soda to the water. I’m not sure any of this adds value.

If, despite these measures, symptoms worsen or don’t improve, you may need to talk to your doctor about various medical procedures. Some can be done in the office; some involve minor surgery. But the self-help strategies outlined above give relief to most people with hemorrhoids.

Parents should be the ones to explain the facts of life, and to teach their students how to drive the family car. When I was a high school administrator, several parents met with me to discuss the school teaching a course on “Credit Card Etiquette – the Do’s and Don’ts of Using the Card.”

I told them that this is important for teens to learn from the very best teachers – Mom and Dad. Students can learn the basic math skills in school, but the parents should teach them how to manage their money!

How should declarer proceed after ruffing?

This week, we are looking at six deals from one of my classes about handling the trump suit correctly.

This is the hardest, in my opinion – unless you have seen the theme before.

In the auction, North’s rebid is a double negative, showing a really bad hand. In the old days, pairs used two no-trump; now, three clubs is popular.

Each has pluses and minuses.

Over three spades, it is reasonable for South to bid six spades, hoping that he will not have two heart losers. If North has three hearts, maybe the suit will break 3-3; and if he has a doubleton, there is a chance for a ruff or two on the board.

Some of my students immediately cashed their two top hearts, then ruffed a heart with the spade nine. That would have been correct in seven spades, but here it cost the small slam.

East overruffed and returned a trump, leaving South with a heart loser.

The careful declarers ruffed the third heart with dummy’s spade jack. Then they returned to hand and ruffed their last heart.

It did not matter that East overruffed, because South had the rest.
