ST. CHARLES – Even before sunset, people were lining up and down Main Street in St. Charles on Saturday, staking claim their viewing locations for the St. Charles Electric Christmas Parade.

Folding chairs loaded with blankets for warmth soon filled the curbs until there was standing room only. Some staked out their spaces from front windows in local restaurants, so they could eat dinner and view the parade without being in the cold. Others stood in the beds of pickup trucks that were parked in the side streets.

Among those eager to see the parade was Sandie Robertson of West Chicago and her family, as they sat on the landscaping stones in front of Baker Community Church.

“We do it for the family,” Robertson said. “I’m here with my sister, my three grandkids, my daughter and

her husband. Everybody comes out. This is our fourth year.”

The best part?

“I like the excitement of the kids,” Robertson said.

“That’s it.”

Mary Kotsiris of Maple Park said she was there because coming to the parade is a family tradition.

“We come back every year,” Kotsiris said, adding she had been coming for more than 15 years. “We just decided to come down and see it with my niece.”

But this was the first time for Mitch Gansemer, a 14-year-old freshman at St. Charles East, to see the parade.

“My parents are here, so I went,” Gansemer said. “I ha-

ven’t seen it before.”

It was Jay Doherty’s first time to see the parade, as well.

“We came to see a great parade, see what kind of floats that they have, see the characters, get into the holiday spirit,” said Doherty, a Bartlett resident. “I knew my family would like it. We got the little kids that would like it.”

The Downtown St. Charles Partnership hosted the Holiday Homecoming weekend, which included the parade. Festivities and events began Friday with the Lighting of the Lights and continued Saturday with a free holiday movie, visiting Santa and free horse-drawn sleigh rides.

Attorney Ken Shepro Elburn Christmas Stroll ‘bigger, better’ to face Chris Lauzen in Kane County Board chairman primary race

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com Former Kane County Board attorney Ken Shepro on Monday filed to run against incumbent Chris Lauzen in the Kane County Board chairman Republican primary race.

Shepro, a Wayne-based attorney, said he filed his paperwork Monday afternoon, including 849 signatures on his petition.

“I feel that my own 12-plus years in county government makes me uniquely qualified to be the county board chairman,” Shepro said Monday.

“I worked with almost all the elected officials and the county board on legal and substantive issues.”

Shepro in the late 1990s began working for the county on various litigation matters before he became the Kane County Board attorney starting in 2004.

Lauzen, who was an Illinois state senator for 20 years, defeated Geneva Mayor Kevin Burns in the 2012 primary and Sue Klinkhamer in the general election to win his first term as board chairman.

“I’m just delighted,” Lauzen said of having a challenger. “I welcome the competition and comparison.”

In other county races in the March 15 general primary election, John Shoemaker of North Aurora will face Tao Martinez in the Democratic primary for Kane County coroner, according to the Kane County Elections website. Bob Tiballi is running against incumbent Rob Russell in the Republican primary for coroner.

Plainfield resident Jesse Maggitt on Monday filed to run against Jim Walz of Gurnee and John J. Hosta of Spring Grove in the 14th Congressional District Democratic primary, according to the Illinois State Board of Elections.

Incumbent U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Plano, is running unopposed in the Republican primary.

Glen Ellyn residents Gerald “Jerry” Drabik and Gordon “Jay” Kinzler will face incumbent U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam, R-Wheaton, in Ken Shepro the 6th Congressional District Republican primary.

Robert Marshall of Burr Ridge will face Amanda Howland of Lake Zurich in the Chris Lauzen D e m o c r a t i c primary for the seat.

DuPage County Board member Tonia Khouri, R-Wheaton, along with Republican candidates Nick Stella of Darien and Herman B. White of Naperville, are vying for the seat of incumbent U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, D-Naperville.

Foster is running unopposed in the Democratic primary.

Also, incumbent State Sen. Jim Oberweis, R-Sugar Grove will not face competition in the Republican primary, according to the Illinois State Board of Elections.

St. Charles School District 303 board member Corinne Pierog also is unopposed in the Democratic primary for Oberweis’ seat.

A lottery for simultaneous petitions, which were filed for the March 15 general primary on 8:30 a.m. Nov. 23, will be at 9:30 a.m. Dec. 9 at the Kane County Clerk’s Office (Building B), Kane County Government Center, 719 S. Batavia Ave., Geneva.

Questions about the lottery can be answered by the Kane County Election Authority at 630-232-5990, according to a news release.

ELBURN – The annual Elburn Christmas Stroll helped raise nearly $4,000 for the Elburn Chamber of Commerce’s Kaneland Scholarship Fund, one of the event’s organizers said Monday.

The event, hosted by the chamber, took place Saturday. Ben Westfall, one of the event co-chairs, said he was “thrilled” the event was able to raise more than last year’s festival, when about $3,000 was raised. The money was raised through a raffle associated with the festival.

Elburn’s Town and Country Public Library was buzzing with activity for the annual event, and businesses in Elburn’s downtown area on Route 47 offered attractions, as well, including face painting and crafts. Some offered hot chocolate and other sweets. There were choirs performing at some locations. For the second year, the Elburn Christmas Stroll took place starting on a Saturday afternoon, and it stretched into the evening.

Westfall said businesses reported a lot of activity during the festival. At one point, he said, Corner Grind ran out of hot chocolate, and Schmidt’s Towne Tap had a waiting list.

“The downtown was packed,” Westfall said. “It was a good turnout. I think the event was bigger, better

At the library, there were several stations of events going on at any given time.

Santa Claus saw children throughout most of the festival. A line for Magic Matt’s balloon animals remained lengthy even as the Christmas Stroll was winding down.

Among those watching

the entertainment at the library were Louis and Mildred Balika. Louis Balika, 93, wore a hat identifying him as a World War II veteran, and he was in a wheelchair being pushed by his son-in-law, Elburn resident Al Isberg.

Isberg, who recently retired as Elburn’s fire marshal, had been part of the Christmas Stroll for years, because the fire department usually participated at its previous location near the library on North Street.

The fire department since has moved to Route 38 and was not part of this year’s festival. With Isberg now retired, he said he was able to just help his in-laws enjoy the entertainment. He said

“It’s a family event,” said Marguerite Ledone, vice president of volunteers for the event. “Everything is free, unless you want to buy something. I think it’s been a tradition in Sugar Grove on and off for at least 20 years.

It started with a small group of people, and it built up.”

Ledone said organizers need about 100 volunteers for the event.

“We are a bit shorter than last year, but we always seem to have enough,” Ledone said. “Even if they show up the day of the event, I’ll use them somehow.

There’s always something to do.”

This year marks the St. Charles company’s 30th in business, giving it an opportunity to thank current and previous employees for their contributions, said Peter Schwartz, vice president and co-owner.

“We think it’s quite a milestone,” he said.

To celebrate, Streng will host a 30th anniversary celebration beginning at 5 p.m.

ST. CHARLES – St. Charles soon will be home to another car dealership.

Fox Valley Auto Group recently celebrated the groundbreaking of its new site for Fox Valley Volkswagen, which is relocating from West Chicago to the DuPage Expo Center site at 4050 E. Main St. in St. Charles, according to a news release.

By now, the steel frame of the showroom is going up, the release stated, indicating the business is expected to move from West Chicago in August 2016.

The St. Charles location not only will allow the dealership to expand physically – it will have nearly twice the number of service bays as the West Chicago site – but it also will allow it to add more jobs, the release stated.

The 2015 Parent Satisfaction Survey will be conducted from Monday to Dec. 16 at district.d303.org, according to a district news release.

A variety of topics will be covered in the survey, including teachers, curriculum, instruction, principals, administration, buildings and food service.

“We encourage all District 303 parents to complete the

survey,” Executive Director of Assessment David Chiszar stated in the release. “We have had high levels of participation in recent years, and the more participants we have, the greater the accuracy of the survey.”

The anonymous survey takes about 10 to 15 minutes to complete and is available in English and Spanish, the release stated. It indicated parents should complete one survey for each of their children who attend a District 303 school.

The results are expected to be presented to the school board in January or February.

LOCAL BRIEFS Taylor Farms Pacific Inc. recalling celery products

Taylor Farms Pacific Inc. of Tracy, California, is recalling its celery products because they may include celery that could potentially contain E. coli 0157:H7, stated a news release from the Kane County Health Department.

The products are being recalled “out of an abundance of caution” because of a Celery and Onion Diced Blend testing positive for E. coli in a sample taken by the Montana Department of Health, the release stated.

The Celery and Onion Diced Blend tested by the state of Montana was used in a Costco Rotisserie Chicken Salad that has been linked to a multi-state E. coli outbreak. In Illinois, the celery products were distributed to Costco stores only, and there have been no immediately reported illnesses related to the recall in the state, according to the release.

Escherichia coli O157:H7 is a bacterium that causes a diarrheal illness, often with bloody stools. Although most healthy adults can recover completely within a week, some people

can develop a form of kidney failure called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome, the release stated, noting HUS is most likely to occur in young children and the elderly.

The condition can lead to serious kidney damage and even death, the release stated.

Customers who have any recalled products are urged to discard the affected products.

Receiving a diploma from the Stanford University Mass Media Institute, Charlotte went on to complete her Master of Public Administration at Notre Dame de Namur University in Belmont, California.

She began her work in defense of abused and neglected children with the founding of Communications for Youth, a non-profit in the San Francisco Bay Area before relocating to the Chicago area and being appointed by the Governor of Illinois to the Statewide Committee on Child Abuse and Neglect (SCCAN). Continuing her child advocacy commitment, she founded CASA of Kane County in the greater Chicagoland area.

Bringing her commitment to the program with her to the Carmel area when she and her beloved husband, G Robert Evans retired to Quail Meadows she introduced many to CASA who would go on to volunteer or serve as board members.

Charlotte was a passionate artist in oil painting, an accomplished pianist and very much enjoyed Bridge. Most of all Charlotte was a people person making friends where ever she was and always lighting up any room she entered.

She will be missed by many.

Charlotte is survived by her husband of over 33 years, G.

Shodeen has submitted a concept plan for the Prairie Center, a proposed redevelopment of the nearly 30-acre parcel near Route 38 and Randall Road in western St. Charles.

Monday’s meeting was held to elicit constructive, relevant feedback before the Plan Commission and Planning and Development Committee consider the developer’s application in January.

Three injured in 2 crashes on Beith Road in 14-hour period KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com VIRGIL TOWNSHIP – A 69-year-old Campton Township man was in serious condition Monday after a weekend crash with a semitrailer on Beith Road, according to a hospital spokesman.

The man, who was driving a 1992 Lincoln Town Car in Saturday’s incident, previously was listed in critical condition, but he had improved to serious condition

by Monday at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, a spokesman said.

The driver was identified as David Abram, 69, of the 42W400 block of Beith Road, in Campton Township near Maple Park, according to a statement from the Kane County Sheriff’s Office.

maritan from the scene, deputies stated in a news release.

The Saturday morning incident was the second serious crash with injuries that Kane County Sheriff’s deputes responded to within 14 hours on Beith Road.

The Lincoln was heading west at 6:40 a.m. Saturday on Beith Road when it struck a semitrailer that was blocking the road while backing into a driveway at 45W160 Beith Road, according to the statement. The truck’s driver, Tyutyunnyk Mykhaylo, 41, of the 45W100 block of Beith Road, in Virgil Township near Maple Park, was not injured, according to the statement.

The first crash occurred at 4:30 p.m. Friday, when a 2012 Ford E-150 van, driven by Charles Males, 63, of the 4000 block of Nottingham Avenue,

Norridge, was traveling east on Beith Road, according to the release.

Males disobeyed the stop sign at the intersection of Beith and Route 47 and struck a 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer, driven by Dana Wynn, 24, of the 0 to 100 block of Penny Lane, Sycamore, the release indicated. Wynn was traveling south on Route 47, according to the release.

Both drivers were taken to Delnor Hospital in Geneva, with Males suffering potentially life-threatening injuries, according to the release. Delnor did not provide information about their conditions.

No citations have been issued. Sheriff’s deputies and the Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team are continuing to investigate both crashes.

He compared one option to the mixed-use development in Mill Creek west of Geneva.

Prairie Center could have luxurious residential units with elevators and underground, heated parking, he said.

The other option had fewer residential units that would be more basic walk-ups with surface parking, Patzelt said. He noted it would have more of an apartment-complex feel.

Amundson said it was clear Shodeen doesn’t like the latter, less luxurious option because Patzelt “did [his] best to make us not like it.”

Deadly game on guns

THE WASHINGTON POST A spare few paragraphs in the local and national media described the death of Shelby Elizabeth Sims. The 23-year-old South Carolina woman was killed early Nov. 14 by her husband when, as police recounted, his gun fired while he waved it around during a card game. Her death demands attention not because it is an anomaly but rather an example of the tragically commonplace: pointless deaths that occur when guns are readily available.

Jeremy Sims, 25, who has been charged

by Spartanburg County authorities in his wife’s death, was drinking alcohol and smoking marijuana before his gun went off, police said. Had Sims not had access to a gun, probably the worst consequence of his behavior would have been a hangover. Instead, his wife of four years is dead; their child was placed in protective custody; and he faces a murder charge.

Most of the national debate about gun violence has centered on mass shootings; but for all their unquestioned horror, they account for only a fraction of the carnage that results from guns. Nearly 300 people a day are shot in murders, assaults, attempted and successful suicides and unintentional shootings. Every day, on average, nearly 90 people die from gun violence. Particularly heartbreaking, as we have written, are the instances of children who are accidentally killed, too often by other children. The numbers – and the tragedies behind them – are a result of U.S. gun policies that allow and even encourage firearms to circulate freely.

We do not know why Sims had a gun, or why, as police said, he brought it to a card game. Perhaps, like many Americans who have bought into the argument of the gun lobby, he thought it necessary for self-defense.

But having guns in homes actually increases risks. There is a higher chance that a gun in the home will result in an accidental shooting, be used in a suicide or a suicide attempt, or escalate an argument to a lethal end, than it being used for self-protection. This country can continue to ignore those facts, but, in doing so, it plays a deadly game.

You will be able to see for yourself the many ways the information can be used to compare your health with the community in which you live, as well as the communities in the region.

Your neighborhood plays a big part in your health. Where you live dictates your ability to find healthy food (such as proximity to grocery stores) and opportunities for physical activity (such as living within

Here are only two examples: • 3.4 percent of our residents, or about 17,500, live more than one mile from a grocery store and are considered to be low-income. Why is this important? Access to healthy foods is essential for preventing and managing health conditions, such as diabetes and high blood pressure. For older adults, the increased risk of some cancers and chronic disease can be reduced by eating a diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables.

• 7.5 percent of Kane County adults, nearly 30,000, have been diagnosed with diabetes. Why is this important? Diabetes is a leading cause of death in the United

States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 25 million people have diabetes, including both diagnosed and undiagnosed cases.

Further, it is possible to use the “Indicator Comparison Report” button, which allows the user to pick one of dozens of health conditions and combine with them with others, an important feature because it allows you to see how different conditions affect other health risks.

ATAVIA – Dennis Piron has seen a number of football players come through Batavia High School in his time teaching and coaching, but he never has seen anyone quite like Canaan Coffey.

Walking up and down the sidelines during Batavia games this season, one of the Bulldogs’ statisticians, JR Robinson, would say on a regular basis, “That No. 3, I

don’t know if you know, but he’s a pretty good player.”

Well, it was Coffey in that No. 3 jersey, and it was nearly impossible to limit the senior receiver and Kane County Chronicle Football Player of the Year.

Coffey set single-season school records with 83 catches and 1,154 yards. In the past two seasons, Coffey has accumulated 142 catches for 1,886 yards and 20 touchdowns – 11 this season.

“He’s as special a player and receiver as we’ve ever

had come through Batavia High School,” Piron said. “A lot of receivers we have had could do different things, but as a complete package – the route running, hands, skill, deep routes, short routes, athleticism making catches – he’s in a class of his own and has set very lofty goals for future Batavia Bulldogs football players.”

One thing that no doubt made Coffey the player he was this year was the relationship he had with quarterback Kyle Niemiec.

Best friends since elementary school, the “duo,” as Niemiec called it, grew up playing football together.

Niemiec knew that on any given night, he and Coffey had developed such a chemistry to the point where they know exactly what the other was thinking or going to do in a certain situation.

Although Niemiec didn’t catch a pass from Coffey on their senior night, which was something he joked about trying with Piron, neither would be in the po-

sition they are without one another.

“Being best friends for so long, that relationship that we have has continued to grow,” Niemiec said. “We bring it out there on the field and it helps so much.

We always tell each other that we wouldn’t have done the things we did this year without each other. But just always knowing what we’re going to do out there. He’s a special player.”

FIRST TEAM OFFENSE Kyle Niemiec, Batavia, sr., QB The Upstate Eight Conference River Division’s Offensive Player of the Year completed over 65 percent of his passes, throwing for 2,753 yards and 24 touchdowns. The senior signal-caller also was named to the Illinois High School Football Coaches Association Class 7A All-State Team and ran for 408 yards and 11 rushing scores in leading the Bulldogs to the 7A quarterfinals.

Justin Taormina, Geneva, sr., RB The Minnesota Mankato commit led the Kane County Chronicle area in rushing, carrying the ball 258 times for 1,491 yards. His season was highlighted by a 40-carry, 272-yard game in the first round of the 7A playoffs against Oswego East. He also was a threat in the passing game, hauling in 14 catches for 272 yards. His 22 touchdowns – 18 rushing – were a team-high and a key reason why the Vikings had the success they did this year.

DEFENSE Glenn Albanese, Batavia, jr., TE The 6-foot-6 Albanese, a Louisville baseball commit, caught 23 passes for 360 yards and seven touchdowns. His performances didn’t always include touchdowns, as he was one of the better blockers in the area.

Austin Vickery, Kaneland, sr., OL The 5-foot-11, 185-pound Vickery was one of the main reasons dual-threat quarterback Jake Marczuk had the season that he did (rushing for 1,000 yards). Vickery helped a Kaneland offense average nearly 150 yards rushing a game this season and win its first ever 6A playoff game.

Zach Sims, Batavia, sr., OL An All-UEC Conference River selection, Sims was a mainstay in the Batavia offensive line all season. Much of the team’s offensive success hinged on the stability of players such as Sims on the line all year.

Canaan Coffey, Batavia, sr., WR The Kane County Chronicle Player of the Year set a single-season school record for catches (83) and yards (1,154) while snagging 11 touchdowns in his last go-around with Batavia. His most memorable moment came on an 88-yard catch and run for a score against Geneva that helped seal a victory in the UEC River title game.

Loudon Vollbrecht, Geneva, sr., OL Despite tearing his ACL on the final play of Geneva’s season, Vollbrecht was one of the strongest linemen in the area, using his 6-8, 290-pound frame to provide running room for Taormina and creating space for Chambers in the pocket.

Ryan Skibinski, Geneva, sr., WR Skibinski took over as Geneva’s No. 1 weapon in the pass game, catching a team-high 54 passes for 698 yards and scoring 10 total touchdowns, one of which was on his only rush attempt of the season.

He caught two game-winning touchdowns from quarterback Sean Chambers on final drives during a 9-2 season.

Sam Ambrogio, St. Charles North, jr., OL As a North captain, Ambrogio was one of the leaders of a North Stars team that won seven games and advanced to the 7A playoffs for the second straight season.

With the likes of quarterback Zach Mettetal returning, as well as Ambrogio, the North Stars look to be one of the area’s stronger programs moving forward.

Jayson Reckards, St. Charles North, sr., WR Reckards was a big-play threat in a strong offensive attack for North. The Valparaiso commit had 30 receptions for a team-high 490 yards, but, more importantly, found the end zone nine times for the North Stars.

Isaac Hawn, St. Charles North, jr., OL Hawn, who was invited to the 2016 U.S. Army National Combine, was alongside Ambrogio giving Mettetal and company space to operate an up-tempo offense. Hawn’s presence helped North enable several speedy playmakers.

Nick Candre, St. Charles East, sr., P There were a few good punters in the area this season, but none more steady than Candre.

He missed a few games because of injury, but did connect on 12 punts, averaging less than 40 yards an attempt.

Andrew Kray, Kaneland, sr., DL Kray, a senior captain, has been a leader of the program since Day 1. The senior had a team-high 16 tackles for loss among his 76 total tackles to go with seven sacks. He was a menace to opposing QBs, forcing three fumbles. Named to the Illinois Football Coaches Association Class 6A all-state team.

Steven Kemp, Geneva, sr., DL Kemp was the rock in the middle of the Geneva front line. His 7.5 sacks were a team-high and he finished second on the team with 82 tackles. He also was used as a fullback in the rushing attack for the Vikings and was one of the stronger Geneva players this year.

Quinn Calcagno, St. Charles North, sr., DL Despite his 5-9 stature, the 205-pound Calcagno was one of the hardest working defensive linemen in the area.

Frequently giving up size to opposing offensive linemen, Calcagno had 53 tackles and three sacks.

Colin Thurston, Batavia, sr., LB Thurston, the leader of the Batavia defense, made a team-high 95 tackles this season, 11 of which came for a loss. Also had four sacks and helped the Batavia defense allow only 18.5 points a game

Jack Russell, St. Charles East, sr., LB Russell was the vocal leader of the Saints since the end of last season. Russell made 30 tackles,

eight of which were for a loss. Adding to his on-field play, Russell, an All-UEC Conference River selection, helped East finish just one win away from becoming playoff eligible.

Tim Green. Geneva, sr., LB Green led Geneva with his 95 tackles while providing sturdy play that helped the Geneva defense stay in the UEC River title game with Batavia in Week 8. He helped the Vikings to a nine-win season, booking a spot in the second round of the 7A playoffs.

Jake Spaniol, St. Charles North, sr., DB Spaniol was one of the most intense defensive backs in the area. He was a leader on and off the field for the North Stars. His 62 tackles were a team-high, and he also intercepted a pass for the 7-2 North Stars.

Brett Bowman, Batavia, sr., DB Drawing the assignment of the opposing team’s top receiving target, Bowman had a team-high nine passes defensed and three interceptions. Bowman also was a contributor on offense, rushing five times for 23 yards and a touchdown.

Donny Friedel, Geneva, sr., DB Friedel made 38 tackles and had a team-high six passes defensed. Friedel played both ways, rushing for 77 yards and also hauling in a 33-yard touchdown against Batavia in the UEC River title game.

Hunter Regelbrugge, Kaneland, jr., DB Regelbrugge led Kaneland with his 79 tackles and boosted Kaneland’s defense down the stretch, fortifying a unit that steered the Knights back to the playoffs after a one-season layoff.

SECOND TEAM

SPECIAL TEAMS Adam Durocher, St. Charles North, jr., K Durocher, an All-UEC Conference River kicking selection, was 5 for 5 on field goal attempts this year. Durocher was 42 of 48 on extra point attempts.

Derek Nutley, Batavia, sr., DL Nutley, the UEC River’s Defensive Player of the Year, was a nightmare for opposing quarterbacks all season. His 16.5 sacks are a Batavia single-season record and a large part of why opposing quarterbacks were rarely comfortable in the pocket against the Bulldogs.

Nutley also retuned a fumble for a touchdown and had 56 tackles.

Piron keeps Batavia on the move

The hours he puts in not only during the season, but the offseason as well made senior quarterback Kyle Niemiec say with a laugh that, “Piron probably spends Dennis Piron more time at the school and around football than he does at home.”

But between Niemiec and receiver Canaan Coffey, they know how good Batavia has it to have someone such as Piron at the helm.

“He honestly just loves what he does,” Coffey said.

“Coaches sometimes forget guys’ names or leave people out; that’s just not him. Piron includes everyone, he knows

Niemiec thinks the time

and preparation are 100 percent a reason why Piron has amassed a 52-7 record in his five seasons, but knows the main reason why he’s earned sustained success is the connection he makes with each and every player.

“My dad and I talk about it all the time. Piron is such a likeable guy,” Niemiec said.

“It’s funny because if you think about it, a head coach and players’ relationships aren’t often the best. But he’d do anything for us and I know I can speak for at least 99 percent of the team and say we’d do anything for him.”

Piron may spend a lot of time talking and thinking about football, but there is no denying that he’s done one thing since coming to Batavia that continued this season: win.

He posted a grade school picture to Twitter of the pair with pads on after Niemiec was named a member of the Illinois High School Football Coaches Association Class 7A All-State Team.

“Ever since eighth grade really ... we knew we’d be playing football together for a long time,” Coffey said. “It was weird because we both played quarterback and wide receiver then and once he became QB and I was receiver in high school, the chemistry was just flawless once we got out there.

I couldn’t have done any of the things I did this year without Kyle or the rest of my teammates.”

After coaching Coffey’s older brother, Micah, who quarterbacked Piron and the Bulldogs to the 2013 Class 6A state championship, Piron believes there is something the family displayed on a regular basis, without effort.

“Bottom line is that they wanted to win,” Piron said.

“Canaan was very humble and was just so excited to be part of a team that had a great opportunity to be successful. But he never demanded the spotlight.

He would never request anything happen for statistical purposes, he just wanted his team

to win. In the course of doing so, he was a very successful and special player.”

Piron said it wouldn’t have surprised him in the least if Coffey had joined Niemiec on the all-state team, knowing how much both meant to the program’s success.

Coffey’s football career ended with Batavia’s loss to CaryGrove in the 7A quarterfinals, and his commitment to play basketball at Indiana Wesleyan means his collegiate legacy will lie in another sport.

But the path he left and the things he did for Batavia football won’t soon be forgotten, especially if Piron’s at the helm.

Dennis Piron could not have walked into a better situation when he became head coach at Batavia five years ago.

Since the Batavia product and longtime assistant took the reins, there has been a culture developed unlike many other high school football programs around.

In 2015, Piron led the Bulldogs to a 10-2 record and their fifth consecutive Upstate

Eight Conference River Division title, not having lost a conference game in any of those seasons. For his efforts and accomplishments in a season in which he guided Batavia to the Class 7A quarterfinals, Piron is the 2015 Kane County Chronicle Football Coach of the Year.

“I’ve been very lucky with what I’ve walked into since I became head coach here,” Piron said. “It’s almost obscene how many games we’ve been winning, but what stands out more to me is the work ethic of the kids that come through this program. I’ve had great kids, a great coaching staff and support system around me and it’s the best place in the world to be a head coach.”

But it has seemed that, especially this season, there isn’t really a situation Piron is

Mike Wilkins’ rise to the role of co-captain of the Geneva boys bowling team isn’t programmed into the database, but all you’d need is an Mike Wilkins image of the Vikings senior and a lightning bolt, and you’d have a start.

Wilkins competed in basketball as a freshman but Jordan ultimately quit Zimberoff and joined bowling “kind of because my friends were doing it,” he said.

A few years later, he and the Vikings are bidding to build on the best season in the program’s short history. Geneva advanced to sectionals in 2014-15 and is eager to take the next step behind Wilkins, classmate and fellow co-captain Max Spencer and a mixture of returners and promising newcomers.

“We’re off to a strong start. … Our core group of guys are pretty good, and we have other guys who are really just beginners,” Geneva coach Jordan Zimberoff said. “So it’s interesting this year. We’ll see how we do.

Seniors Mario Gelfuso and John Zupke join Spencer and Wilkins as team leaders, helping foster an environment that blends competitiveness and enjoyment.

Sure, the Vikings take their craft seriously, but they also realize they’re honing it at a bowling alley, where the aforementioned animations and other sound effects can be difficult to overlook.

“It’s really the chemistry; we really get along well,” Wilkins said. “And that helps us keep streaks going and get out of cold

There’s plenty of time for younger bowlers to get acclimated, too. The competition season spans from early November through the final weekend of January, when the state tournament descends on St. Clair Bowl in downstate O’Fallon.

“We don’t have a whole lot of depth, but we’ll be competitive in conference and hopefully in some of the tournaments that we’re at,” Zimberoff said. “We think at the end of the year we’ll have a decent shot at moving on to sectionals, then after that we have to have a good day to have a chance to go on to state.”

Geneva will welcome its latest challenge Thursday when it hosts fellow Bowling Green tenant St. Charles East in an Upstate Eight Conference River Division dual.

The Saints finished third in the state last season, and often loom as a barometer for the Vikings, especially when East and Geneva entertain separate programs simultaneously.

“It feels like as they build up, then we feel the pressure to build up,” Wilkins said. “The competition in the alley kind of helps each other get better. …

A lot of days we’ll have meets right next to them, and it’s kind of cool to watch what they’re doing, see if we can beat them even if we’re not competing that day.”

The Bulldogs managed only two 3-pointers in the first quarter but found the touch from the 3-point line in the second quarter. Twelve of Batavia’s 19 second-quarter points were the result of 3-point shots. Carter Eberhardt (11 points) sank three.

Coffey was named to the all-tournament team, along with Kaneland’s Ryan David and Dylan Vaca and Gabriel Johnson of St. Francis.

Lake, Brandon Schleicher hit a pair of free throws with 2.8 seconds to play to boost the 4-0 Vikings to the title, their second straight in the tournament.

Barrington grabbed a 43-42 lead with just over three minutes to play.

Although Geneva graduated much of its core from last season’s IHSA Class 4A fourthplace finisher, the team boasts its share of depth.

“We still have a lot of quality kids who work hard,” Vikings coach Phil Ralston said.

One such player is Jordan Vedder, who complemented returner Bennett Fuzak as a scoring option throughout the tournament.

“This game, it can get real personal,” McPhee said.

“When you win, it’s all fun, and when you lose, it’s very personal. I think the last two games that we lost – Minnesota and Denver – a lot of guys took it upon themselves that this game going in was personal.

“The quarterback said he loved beating up on us. Who does he think we are? We ain’t the team of last year or two years ago, three years ago. It’s 2015, Chicago. A lot of guys took it personal, especially when somebody said, ‘I love beating up on your brother.’

I ain’t gonna let nobody come beat my little brother up. We went in there, and we slapped them on his [butt]. They need to go ask them how that feels.”

McPhee and his fellow defenders clearly didn’t take kindly to Aaron Rodgers saying after his team’s 31-23 Week 1 victory at Soldier Field that the Packers “always enjoy beating the Bears,” that on the heels of Mike McCarthy proclaiming his team would kick the Bears’ butts.

But McPhee isn’t resting on the laurels of one win, even one as significant as Thursday’s, with the Bears relevant with regard to postseason talk after an 0-3 start. The Bears host San Francisco at noon

“I think it’s the same, but it’s a little bit more sense of urgency now,” McPhee said of the defense’s mindset. “Now, we know we got an opportunity to win out these next five games and possibly get a wild card in the playoffs, so everybody got their mindset on San Francisco and we’re ready to go in for battle.”

The Bears have ascended to No. 2 in the NFL in pass defense, which, for some, might mask their recent struggles defending the run – 4.8 yards a carry allowed ranks 30th, and the Bears have permitted their

two highest rushing totals of the season in consecutive weeks – just not McPhee.

“Not in the run game,” McPhee said when asked how much pride he takes in the defense’s role in Chicago winning four of its past five. “We ain’t doing good in the run game right now, so hopefully we can tighten up the screws. I think our secondary is doing a great job of covering; they did that all year. But we just got to get better in the run defense, and that’s what our focus got to be in because San Fran going to come in here and probably try and run the ball down

our throats.”

One of the most encouraging aspects of the defense’s ascent has been the increasing contributions from Lamarr Houston and Willie Young as McPhee has managed a sore knee that forced him to miss Week 10, playing only 56 percent of snaps since.

But an injury the staff has admitted could affect its best player the rest of the season clearly hasn’t hampered McPhee’s mood after the Bears’ Thanksgiving triumph.

“It was great. My turkey was great. Thanksgiving was great,” he said.

SPORTS BRIEFS Steel players earn USHL honors

CHICAGO – The United States Hockey League announced Monday that Chicago Steel goaltender Daniel Vladar has been named CCM/USHL Co-Goaltender of the Week, while Ruslan Rakhmatov has been selected as Defenseman of the Week. Each played a large role in Chicago’s perfect 3-0 Daniel Vladar week, extending the team’s current point streak to six games (5-0-1-0).

Vladar returned to action this weekend after missing three games with an upper-body

injury. The 18-year-old from the Czech Republic stopped 68 of the combined 69 shots he faced this weekend in a home-and-home series against Dubuque, including a 36-save shutout on the road Saturday night.

Following the two victories, Vladar ranks second among USHL goaltenders with a 1.97 goals against average.

Vladar, who was selected by the Boston Bruins in the third Ruslan round (75th overall) of the Rakhmatov NHL Entry Draft in June, split honors with Ben Blacker of the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders.

The tango was introduced in Argentina about 1902, but didn’t become the latest dance craze until about 1916. It spread to Paris, the United States and Europe, and remained a favorite until the 1920s.

The tango was popular in upperclass dance parlors and has gone in and out of favor. Early tango dances were very daring, and in some countries they were restricted by law. But dancing couples were among the first wind-up tin toys for children in the 1800s. Around 1916, a dancing toy with figures of a man in tails and an elegant woman in a pink dress was made by the German Gunthermann Company (1877-1965). Wind the key hidden under the woman’s dress, and the couple dances in random patterns.

Although the toy was sold in a box labeled “Tango,” it is sometimes called the “Waltzing Couple” or the “Dancing Couple.” The toy, in excellent condition with the box, sold at a James Julia auction in Maine in June 2015 for $3,851.

Several other dancing couple toys have been made. In the 1930s, there was a Japanese key wind 6-inchtall celluloid toy by Masudaya. The woman has a red dress. The toy sells today for about $40. In the 1960s, a Japanese company, Tokyo Plaything Shokai, made a dancing toy for Hikari Toy Products. The figures are tin with vinyl heads and the woman has a blue dress. It sells for about $360 to $400. The idea continued,

and modern dancing toys have modern clothes, the latest dances, music and electronic controls. *** Q: I have a collection of Chinese mud figures and would like to know their value. Are there collectors interested in these figures?

A: Mud figures are small partiallyglazed pottery figures made in China in the 20th century. They originally were made for fish tanks or planters.

Most figures are of farmers, scholars, workers or merchants.

Other pieces are trees, houses and similar parts of the landscape. The figures have unglazed faces and hands but glazed clothing. They were made by hand, often by members of the village where they were made.

Reproductions have been made.

There isn’t a big market for mud figures. Price depends on size, condition and interest in the design.

They sell online and at auctions for about $10 to over $100. *** Q: I collect memorabilia connected with movie cowboys including Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, Hopalong Cassidy and Tom Mix. A friend who moved here from Australia gave me his childhood collection, a box of Hopalong games and ads. None were items I have seen. Many were made in Australia. Were his movies seen in Australia? When?

A: Hopalong Cassidy was a character in 28 books, starting in 1907. The character was in movies from 1934 to 1948. Sixty-six films were made. In 1948 William Boyd, the most famous star who played Hopalong, bought the television rights to the character from the

However, the technique already has been modified to edit multiple genes simultaneously.

The CRISPR technology has the potential to affect our lives beyond curing diseases. Experiments are underway to see if it can reduce the number of disease-carrying insects, or to grow hardier crops.

Any powerful new technology can, as you say, also be scary. A panel of distinguished scientists recently urged the world’s scientific community to refrain from using CRISPR to edit genes in human eggs or sperm until more is known about whether there may be potentially harmful results.

There are two lessons in the story of CRISPR. First, we humans are smart enough to make breakthroughs like CRISPR, but not smart enough to know from where those breakthroughs will come.

CRISPR was discovered by scientists pursuing an arcane question: how bacteria defend themselves from viruses. The scientists were not trying to invent a technique for editing human genes.

Teens: You might feel uncomfortable strapped into your seat riding in an automobile, but riders should buckle up every time if they value life and health. Riding around unbelted is unwise. Accidents happen without warning, and people who are wearing seatbelts have a much better chance of escaping serious injury and death.

Here’s why: In a 30-mph collision with a solid object, an unbelted driver or passenger slams into the windshield, the instrument panel or the steering wheel and column at more than 100 times the force of gravity. The unbelted occupant of the 30-mph crash hits the windshield or other interior surface of the vehicle with the same impact as a fall from a three-story building. The impact of a mere 20-mph crash is roughly equivalent to catching a 200-pound weight dropped from seven feet. Ouch!

An unbelted rider holding a child on his or her lap in a 30-mph crash is thrown forward with the force of one-and-a-half tons. The child could be crushed to death.

Seatbelts help vehicle occupants “ride down” the force of the crash (the first collision) by holding them in place and preventing contact with either the interior of the vehicle or

Nameless: I have never favored parents’ letting calendars absolutely determine when their child begins dating. A teenager’s maturity, dependability and trustworthiness are far better gauges. Some teens are mature enough to date when they’re 14, while others need to wait a few more years.

This is not an easy decision for a parent to make, but in your case, I’d have to agree with your mom.

P.S. I’m impressed with your GPA. Dr. Wallace: My ex and I dated for more than a year, but we broke up because we were becoming too serious. Both of us now are dating others. Dear Dr. K: My son said he learned in school about a powerful new technique for editing genes that could possibly cure diseases. It also sounds a little scary. Can you tell me more?

Dear Reader: Your son probably is talking about a technique called CRISPR. This technique already is having a great impact on biological research, and it may someday help cure some human diseases.

Many diseases are caused by defects in how genes are built. This, in turn, can cause a defect in how the protein made by the gene is built. A good example is the first disease in which a genetic defect was identified: sickle cell anemia. The disease brings terrible pain and damages organs.

It can even cause strokes to occur in children.

Without treatment, it can be fatal.

In sickle cell anemia, the defect is in the gene that makes a protein called globin. Globin is inside red blood cells and carries oxygen to all parts of the body. The CRISPR technique allows a scientist to find that defect in the gene and correct it.

So will CRISPR cure sickle cell anemia? Maybe. But it won’t be simple.

Editing genes in cells in a laboratory dish is one thing.

It’s quite another matter to edit genes in the cells of a living animal or human. Diseases typically affect certain cells in certain organs. So, to correct those diseases requires targeting just those genes, in just those cells and organs, deep within the body. That is a real challenge.

Nevertheless, some success already is being reported in editing genes inside living animals. For example, the technique was recently used to edit a gene in a mouse’s liver that affects the level of cholesterol in the

Bridge writers can be predictable, but some use the chameleon system of bidding. They make the bid that fits the hand they have, not what their convention card says. For example, in today’s deal, what should North rebid with his hand?

One writer said that he must bid two diamonds, fourth suit game-forcing, because a three-heart rebid would be only game-invitational. He sarcastically called it modern bidding.

But what would he have done with ace-doubleton of spades and six hearts to the king-queen-jack? No doubt he would have recommended a game-invitational three hearts!

The advantage of two diamonds is that you hear another bid from partner (here, three clubs, to show the long suit) before continuing with three hearts.

Over the writer’s forcing threeheart rebid, South might well bid three no-trump, which North would probably pass. Then they would miss a makable seven-club contract.

After fourth-suit-forcing, the auction over three hearts would probably continue three no-trump – four clubs – four diamonds (control-bid) – four hearts (control-bid) – Blackwood – six or seven clubs. Admittedly, in seven clubs, South must guess the play. With this layout, he must establish dummy’s heart suit. You can work out the play.

The key point is that with strain and level uncertain, keep the early bidding as low as possible.
