Christmas Stroll draws crowds to Elburn Businesses have giveaways and special attractions

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – Marquis Hough walked along Route 47 on Saturday night in Elburn, wearing an outfit that included ornaments, holiday lights and artificial Christmas tree greenery.

Hough, whose mother, Liz, owns the Beautiful U Resale Shop, was getting into the spirit of the Elburn Chamber of Commerce’s annual Christmas Stroll.

He smiled as a few people looked a couple of times after noticing Marquis Hough wasn’t a mere decoration.

“The first time they see it, they are just kind of shocked, ‘This is a moving tree,’ ” Marquis Hough said, adding that he enjoyed the experience.

The Beautiful U store was among many Elburn businesses participating in the Christmas Stroll, which this year shifted to a Saturday afternoon that just happened to

also be Small Business Saturday.

Activities took place at the Town and Country Public Library, Lighthouse Academy and Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District.

Many businesses stayed open later than usual, and several were crowded with patrons enjoying giveaways and special attractions.

At Ream’s Elburn Market, a piano player offered entertainment for part of the evening. At the recently opened Corner Grind coffee shop, employees were handing out free hot chocolate and pastries. Scouts were handing out s’mores at the fire station.

The library long has been a major hub for the Christmas Stroll, hosting Santa and Mrs. Claus, as well as musicians and attractions, such as Magic Matt making balloon animals and a marionette show.

Also, patrons could have some apple cider and cookies in a meeting room. Among those performing were Kristin Paxinos and Ben Westfall of Da Capo Music Studio.

Paxinos and Westfall served as the chairs for the event. There was a new feature at the library this year

– a light show decoration provided by Brian Larsen, whose Larsen Light Show won a contest on ABC-TV last year.

That was turned on at 5 p.m., after a short proclamation by Elburn Village President Dave Anderson, who said he was pleased to be “given the opportunity to open a new chapter in the holiday observance here in Elburn.”

Much of the activity took place in the library’s youth services area. Dwayne Nelson, the library’s youth services and reference librarian, said he expected about 1,000 visitors to the library.

“This is what it’s all about,” he said, as he looked outside of his office and watched the crowds at each attraction. He said the library’s staff will work hard on the decorations, and it is gratifying to see a strong response.

He also praised artist Val Pieroni, who decorates the library’s windows and many windows of businesses around town.

Elburn resident Anne Kuntz was at Beautiful U. She said she always goes to the Christmas Stroll, and she marked her calendar for the

traditional date, which is the first Friday in December.

After she learned the Christmas Stroll was moving to the first Saturday after Thanksgiving – and that the Elburn and Countryside Community Center’s Jinglepalooza event would be Friday – she decided to mark both dates on her calendar.

Kuntz, embracing the Christmas spirit with large snowman earmuffs, said her Christmas Stroll experience had been pleasant.

She showed off a “retro Santa decoration” that she would be buying at Beautiful U, and said she had enjoyed a visit to the Corner Grind.

She was headed to more businesses and, eventually, the library.

“I love walking downtown here,” she said. “It’s one of the reasons I moved here.”

At Beautiful U, store owner Liz Hough said the shop had been busy all weekend.

She said it provided a great opportunity to share Beautiful U’s mission of providing a “Christ-centered, family-style intervention program for atrisk pregnant teens and teen mothers.”

The business has been in

its downtown Elburn location since April, and she said there have been so many donations that it’s been difficult to keep up.

“We’ve been very blessed,” she said.

Caitlin Hathaway, who volunteers at Beautiful U, said those who run the store were “incredibly inspirational.”

She said she has been impressed with their graciousness and kindness, and that they help many who are in need.

She smiled as she watched groups of people walk through the store, either to browse the merchandise or to sample cookies and refreshments.

At Schmidt’s Towne Tap in downtown Elburn, people were gathering for the post-Christmas Stroll raffle drawing. Westfall called the turnout for the festival “extraordinary.”

He said organizers sold “way more raffle tickets” than they thought they might.

He said the raffle raised $3,000. He said it went well, “the mayor gave a speech and the lights went on, it was perfect.”

“It’s what it’s supposed to be,” Westfall said.

Batavia welcomes Santa Claus at annual event

“Last year we had a problem,” the local business owner said. “Last year Santa Claus almost missed Batavia because we did not sing loud enough.”

Voting began on Facebook Wednesday and ended at noon Sunday, Felkamp said. Girl Scout Troop 4953 won with a tree decorated as Olaf from “Frozen.”

As a reward, troop members were invited onstage to be recognized and helped in the lighting of the community tree, Felkamp said.

Fire damages Campton Hills home KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com CAMPTON HILLS – A laundry room fire caused $75,000 in damage Saturday to a Campton Hills home, according to a news release from the Fox River and Countryside Fire/Rescue District.

Firefighters arrived at the 7N300 block of Fox Bend Drive at 1:45 p.m. Saturday to find smoke coming from the rear of the single-family, two-story residence, the release states.

The fire reportedly was in the first-floor laundry room

area, and the situation was under control by 2 p.m. According to the release, the fire had been burning “for some time,” but the fire’s growth was limited by a closed door between the laundry room and kitchen.

“Melted items on shelving indicated extreme heat had been present during phases of fire growth,” the release states, noting “extensive overhaul” is required in the room.

Smoke damage also was present throughout the home.

Damage to property was estimated at $25,000, and dam-

age to contents was estimated at $50,000. The homeowner told fire officials he left around 11 a.m. and returned about 1:30 p.m. to find light smoke in the home, according to the release.

No injuries were reported.

A dog reportedly was removed from the house before the fire department’s arrival.

The release indicated the fire was under investigation.

Fox River and Countryside was assisted by units from Pingree Grove, Burlington, South Elgin, Elburn and Elgin.

Batavia company files complaint against PetSmart

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – A Batavia-based company that manufactures metal litter scoops is claiming that PetSmart breached a contract with the company.

In response to the complaint, PetSmart corporate communications manager Erin Gray said that as a standing practice, PetSmart doesn’t comment on pending claims.

Charles Firth, owner of DurAnimals and creator of the

DuraScoop line of cat litter scoops, said PetSmart in May stopped selling his product after 10 years of brisk sales and replaced it with a knockoff.

“From 2004 to 2014, it was their number one-grossing litter scoop,” Firth said. “They made a knockoff of our product.”

According to Firth, PetSmart was required to give his company a three-month warning as part of signed vendor agreement.

He said he is stuck with tens of thousands of

PetSmart-branded scoops and has filed a $346,981 claim with the American Arbitration Association.

“Had they told us, we would have stopped making them,” Firth said.

DuraScoop also sells products through websites such as Amazon.com and wholesalepet.com.

The company’s metal litter scoop also was used to clean tar balls from beaches in Alabama and Louisiana after the Deepwater Horizon oil rig spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010.

ST. CHARLES – A neighbor of a woman killed Friday afternoon in a crash reacted with shock Saturday after a 23-year-old St. Charles man was charged with aggravated driving under the influence in the incident.

“It’s heartbreaking,” neighbor Chandler Claps said Saturday. He lives on Green Willow Lane, a few doors down from the home of 65-year-old Joshua E. Susan Gorecki.

News of the crash spread quickly through the neighborhood along the Fox River.

Bond has been set at a $1 million for Joshua E. Spudich, 23, of the 400 block of South Second Street, St. Charles.

Spudich was charged with four felony counts of aggravated DUI and one felony count of possession of a controlled substance, one count of driving under the influence of drugs, one count of driving while license revoked and one count of improper lane use.

Gorecki was taken to Delnor Hospital in Geneva, and died as a result of the injuries suffered in the crash, according to a release issued by the St. Charles Police Department.

An autopsy will be conducted Monday, Kane County Coroner Rob Russell said. A preliminary hearing is set for Dec. 10, according to court records.

St. Charles police and fire departments at 2:05 p.m. Friday responded to a crash at the intersection of North Second Street and Timbers Trail.

According to the release, the preliminary investigation showed that Spudich was driving a 2003 Hyundai Santa Fe south on Second Street when he drifted across the center median and struck head on a 2004 Toyota Corolla driven by Gorecki, who was driving north on Second Street. Claps said he drove past the crash scene.

Spudich initially was treated and released by medics at the scene. He later was taken to Delnor by St. Charles police and treated and released for minor injuries, the release stated. Police are not releasing any other details of the crash at this time, as the report is still being completed. Spudich previously was charged by St. Charles police in April 2010 for unlawful possession of alcohol. He also was charged by Geneva police in August 2010 with driving under the influence of alcohol.

Spudich and three other teens in November 2010 were accused of robbing a group in a park in unincorporated St. Charles Township. He was charged with aggravated robbery in that incident.

After slow start, East zooms past North

The St. Charles North boys basketball team owned the opening eight minutes Saturday in the third-place game of St. Charles East’s Ron Johnson tournament but the North Stars’ momentum screeched to a halt as the host Saints pulled away for a 70-49 victory.

When it was through, it was hard to believe North held leads of 19-9 after the first quarter and 33-30 at halftime.

“I think we were still a little reeling from the loss to St. Joe’s [on Friday] when we came out,” East coach Pat

Woods said. “I don’t think we were ready to play to be honest, and obviously North was ready to play. [Jake] Ludwig got hot early, and when he gets hot, it’s really tough to stop them.”

Ludwig, North’s standout senior guard, sizzled during the first half, scoring 16 points on 6 of 6 shooting from the floor, but he crashed to the floor hard late in the second quarter and was held scoreless the rest of the night.

“I don’t know if that impacted him but after that he really wasn’t the same,” North coach Tom Poulin said. “But I thought Jake competed hard and gave us everything he had.”

Ludwig and East senior guard Cole Gentry were

all-tournament selections, and Gentry turned in another quality performance. He led the Saints with 24 points, making all nine of his free throws.

While Gentry thriving is nothing new for the Saints (31), the emergence of senior big man Jack Bronec is. Bronec keyed East’s third-quarter surge, scoring all eight of his points in the quarter, eventually commanding a double team from the undersized North Stars (2-2).

The 6-foot-8 Bronec played sparingly as a junior but a concerted offseason push in the weight room along with his skill development is paying early dividends. He acknowledged some frustration with how his junior season played out.

“I was a little bit but it was just not the right time for me, but now it is,” said Bronec, now a starter for the Saints.

Added Woods: “When he came in here freshman year, there was a question of whether he was going to make the team or not. To work his way up as he did is just a real credit to him and the effort he put forth to make himself a better player.”

Two of Bronec’s field goals in the third quarter were pointblank, stick-backs of his own misses, to Poulin’s chagrin.

East’s other primary frontcourt player, senior Mick Vyzral, had a double-double, notching 11 points and 11 rebounds.

“If we don’t back people up, if we can’t box somebody

out and back them up or get around and deny the ball into the post, we’ll be in trouble because we have no size,” Poulin said. “That’s a battle we’re going to fight all season.”

Shooting guard Jake Clodi added 10 points off the bench for the Saints, who played without starting forward James McQuillan (concussion suffered Friday against St. Joe).

Senior forward Jack Callaghan chipped in 12 points for North, which will aim to troubleshoot swiftly. The North Stars and Saints will have their first conference meeting in a week, also at East.

St. Joseph topped Plainfield East in overtime in Saturday’s tournament championship game.

“To be honest, I gave a lot of energy and kept everyone from keeping their heads down, and just kept pushing through,” Thomas said as to why he was named most inspirational.

Thomas, a junior point guard, finished with seven points, two rebounds and three assists. Thomas, Coffey, and Peez combined for only one turnover and the team only six.

The tough Batavia defense held the Bulldogs in check, forcing 12 turnovers and holding CMLA to only 37.5 percent from the floor.

Chicago Marine Leadership fell to 0-4 in tournament play while the Bulldogs won the Ken Peddy Windmill City Classic for the first time since 2009.

Coach Jim Nazos was happy with the way his team played.

“I thought throughout the tournament, we were consistent,” Nazos said. “That was

a tough game to play coming out of [a close win against St. Francis on Friday], emotions were running high and Marine was ready. They played well early. I thought we spurted when we had to and it was enough to pull away there towards the end.”

Earlier Saturday, St. Francis (2-2) dropped its final contest in the Ken Peddy tournament, 53-43, to Wheaton Warrenville South. The Spartans cut the Tigers’ 45-35 lead to seven on a 3 by Mike Shaw and then to 49-43 on a Jason Sullivan 3-pointer with 56 seconds left. In the end, it was too much Josh Ruggles for Wheaton Warrenville South.

Ruggles finished with 22 points on 3 of 4 second-half 3s and 4 for 4 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter. The Tigers made 8 of 9 free throws down the stretch to ice the game.

A former Wheaton Academy star, Ruggles finished with a game-high 22. Shaw finished with 14 to lead the Spartans.

“We are a work in progress,” St. Francis coach Bob Ward said. “Our best basketball is ahead of us.”

Kaneland’s Dylan Vaca, Batavia’s Jacob Roberts, Wheaton Warrenville South’s Ruggles and Matt Dacy-Seijo, Chicago Marine Leadership’s Ward and St. Francis’ Jason Sullivan were named to the All-Tournament Team, along with MVP Peez.

Geneva rolls to tourney title

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com CRYSTAL LAKE – Those that attended the Crystal Lake Central Tournament and saw Geneva play all wanted to know the same thing. What is in the water in Geneva?

The Vikings’ length is unlike anyone had seen in the area in a long time.

After winning its first three games by double digits, Geneva continued its dominance in the championship game Saturday night, beating the host Tigers, 64-31.

The Vikings (4-0) were once again led by Buffalo-bound Nate Navigato, who scored a game-high 21 points, knocking down three 3-pointers. The more Geneva continued to dominate its games throughout the tournament, the group began to realize it can put together something special this season.

“The ceiling is sky-high for our team this year,” Navigato said. “We can still get better with certain things, but not even being at full strength and playing this well really shows how good we can be once everyone is healthy.”

The team is playing with-

out top point guard Pace Temple because of a knee injury suffered in the Class 7A football playoffs. Coach Phil Ralston saw much more of what he wanted to see from certain players he is looking to prove themselves.

“A lot more of the guys stepped up today and I’m proud of the effort that everyone gave,” Ralston said. “No one is going to feel bad for us that we’re not fully healthy as a team, but I keep telling the guys that if we continue to do the things that make us successful, we will only get better.”

Forward Bennett Fuzak also contributed eight points for the Vikings, who received the highest praise from Crystal Lake Central coach Rich Czeslawski after the game. After presenting the championship plaque, Czeslawski had a talk with the Geneva team, which he later explained.

“There are college teams that are envious of their size,” Czeslawski said. “Even if we played a perfect game, I think they still would have beat us. I told them after the game that, as a coach, these are the years you wait for.

That is a very special team over there.”

BATAVIA – The Batavia boys basketball team wrapped up an unbeaten four-game run through the Ken Peddy Windmill City Classic.

Despite trailing, 13-12 after the first quarter, the Bulldogs battled back to pull out a 6446 win over Chicago Marine Leadership Academy.

Junior guard Canaan Coffey kept the Bulldogs afloat early, knocking down three of his first four 3-point attempts. Coffey led all scorers with 17 points, 11 coming in the first half.

Senior Chasen Peez was named the tournament MVP after posting 13 points and seven rebounds. Peez went 4 of 7 from the field and knocked down five free throws down the stretch. The 6-foot-7 senior had his hands full guarding Marine Leadership Academy senior Dwayne Ward, who finished with 17 points and seven rebounds, including an emphatic dunk in the first half. However, Ward was only 1 of 5 from the free-throw line, committed three turnovers and fouled out with 5:57 remaining in the game to take the wind out of the visitors’ sails in what was only a 10-point game.

After a three-point play by Coffey with 2:54 left, the Bulldogs took a 56-42 lead, essentially putting the game out of reach.

Dear Abby: For those who are looking for gift suggestions for older parents, may I offer what my kids do for us? They live far away and usually visit us in the spring and fall.

Before they leave, my daughter scrubs my bathroom shower and the rest of the room, cleans my refrigerator, oven, kitchen cabinets, my carpets – things that are difficult for me to do. While she’s inside doing that, my sonin-law is outside trimming trees and bushes, doing general yard cleanup in the spring and raking leaves and disposing of them in the fall.

In addition, during the months BEFORE their visit, my daughter is setting aside and freezing small portions of entrees so we will have future dinners from her meals. She also freezes an assortment of different soups in zip-lock bags, laid flat so they will fit well in my freezer.

While they’re here, they cook all the meals and do the cleanup. What a wonderful gift!

Even if some families don’t cook, they could make up small meals with deli purchases and freeze them for their parents.

Nothing could be appreciated more. Instead of buying a useless gift because “We didn’t know what to get you – you said you didn’t want anything,” these are gifts that keep on giving! – Truly Blessed In Montana Dear Truly Blessed: I agree.
