Readers give feedback on awards, coverage It’s been awhile since I’ve included reader feedback in my column.

The following is what we’ve recently heard about our news coverage.

First, reader Jim Ledbetter responded to my Oct. 26 column, which detailed the 18 awards that the Kane County Chronicle received last month from the Northern Illinois Newspaper Association.

Police: Woman charged in underage drinking party

BATAVIA – Charges have been filed against a Batavia woman in connection with an underage drinking party that took place last week, according to a Batavia Police Department news release. Vanessa R. Vanessa R. Fania Fania, 40, is charged with hosting an unlawful residential gathering.

Police said similar charges are pending for a second adult, also 40.

The matter is expected in Kane County Branch Court

Batavia police responded to the 200 block of South Prairie Street about 9:30 p.m. Nov. 1 for a reported underage drinking party.

Upon arrival, officers reportedly saw several youths running away from the property.

Investigation led police to a large underage gathering inside the home, police said.

Police noted several people were in a detached garage, and a bonfire was in the backyard.

Twenty-one minors reportedly were charged with underage drinking. Police said they cannot release the minors’ names because they were younger than 18.

St. Charles-based company plans to open coworking spaces in Tri-Cities

asloboda@shawmedia.com As president of a St. Charlesbased company that designs spaces for tomorrow’s workplace, Mara Hauser knows the market for big corporate offices is changing.

Companies are downsizing, seeking workplaces with less square footage and smaller furniture budgets, she said.

These trends, along with Hauser’s participation in the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses program, have led The Hauser Group to create a new division focused on a different kind of model: coworking.

Coworking is a style of work characterized by a shared working environment and independent activity.

For example, Hauser said, instead of designing workspace for a company with 200 employees, her new venture – Catalyst Coworking – would design “great, inspirational spaces” where 200 people could come to work.

“I’ve never been so excited about something,” Hauser said.

The coworking movement Coworking is a concept that has gained momentum in recent years, as documented by Deskmag, an online magazine that studies the topic.

In addition to Chicago, Deskmag lists coworking sites in such U.S. cities as Seattle; Los Angeles; Portland, Ore.; and Nashville, Tenn.; as well as locations in other countries, including Australia, Germany, Brazil and Mexico.

Hauser – who once worked out of her basement – said coworking gives those who operate from home, coffee shops and libraries a dedicated workspace free of such distractions as chores, barking dogs and kids.

It also gives independent workers a place where they can collaborate and network with others, she said.

Hauser understands the value of collaboration. As a young business owner – she bought her first company at age 29 – she said she had a lot to learn.

For her, she said, the National Association of Women Business Owners was a resource that provided networking and mentoring opportunities.

With coworking, Hauser said, users might not work in the same field, but they could have skills, such as copyediting, that would benefit one another.

Deskmag found that to be true in its inaugural Global Coworking Survey.

“By attending a coworking space, many individuals report making new acquaintance who have had a positive effect on their own work,” the publication reported.

“Within the last two months, 43 percent of survey respondents reported meeting one to three helpful acquaintances, while another 43 percent have found four or more such connections.”

Coworking in St. Charles and Batavia In all its surveys on coworking, Deskmag has found that the majority of co-workers –

slightly more than 50 percent – are freelancers. The rest are entrepreneurs with employees or are employees of a company, according to the surveys.

Locally, Hauser said, census data on the number of people who work from home in the Tri-Cities and the Fox Valley support the need for the office space Catalyst Coworking aims to provide in St. Charles and Batavia.

“We know the population is out there,” she said.

Clients of Catalyst Coworking could rent desk space to fit their needs and would have access to meeting rooms, phone booths for private calls, Wi-Fi and, among other amenities, a community coordinator who

Sharon O’Leary of Murray Commercial Real Estate is helping the company find the right space, preferably between upscale and trendy with an urban feel, she said, noting the target size is between 5,000 and 7,000 square feet.

“We’ve identified a few spaces in downtown St. Charles and Batavia,” O’Leary said. “It’s still in the process.”

Meanwhile, Catalyst Coworking is hosting events to help build a community among independent and contract workers.

“We all want to do better at our business,” Hauser said.

“We all want to help each other.”

EDNA V. STROM Born: Jan. 27, 1919; in Babcock, Wis. Died: Nov. 5, 2013; in Dixon LILY LAKE – Edna V. Strom, 94, of Lily Lake, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2013, at Heritage Square in Dixon, her residence for the past four years.

Born Jan. 27, 1919, in Babcock, Wis., Edna was the eldest child of Carl and Fredrika Olson who had immigrated from Sweden. Early in her childhood the family moved to the Wasco farming community, where she attended school and graduated from St. Charles High School in 1936. For the next several years, Edna worked in Chicago as a secretary at Sears Roebuck & Co. On Sept. 7, 1940, Edna was married to Anders Elof Strom at Grace Lutheran Church in Lily Lake, their family church for all of their lives. To this union were born five children. Elof and Edna moved their family to the Strom farm in Lily Lake in 1952. Edna was active in her church, where she directed choirs, taught Sunday school, led the women’s group and organized the 75th and 100th year anniversaries of the church. She was an

excellent pianist and frequent soloist for weddings and funerals, especially if songs were requested to be sung in Swedish. She was involved in her children’s schools and activities.

In 1962, she began a nearly 30year career at St. Charles National Bank, which is now known as Fifth Third Bank in downtown St. Charles. Beginning as an executive secretary, she retired as vice president at what then had become Old Kent Bank. During these years she also was active in and served as president of the local Tri-Cities Zonta group, an international professional business women’s organization.

During her lifetime, she maintained regular correspondence with many cousins in Sweden. She visited their homes in 1979 and 1990, and hosted them in hers more than a dozen times over the years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elof, in 1985; an infant son, Lowell Anders; a great-granddaughter; her parents; brothers, Carl and Roy Olson; sister, Leona (Mrs. Earl) Anderson; and nephew, Chuck Olson.

STC man accused of DUI, eluding police

Ronald W. Weddell, 57, of the 900 block of South Eighth Street, was charged with felony aggravated fleeing and eluding police and four misde-

meanor offenses: driving under the influence of alcohol, driving with a blood-alcohol level of more than 0.08 percent, speeding and driving without lights when required.

Cicada parasite beetles emerge from subterranean hideaways in mid-autumn. The spectacular antennae on this individual indicate that it is male. and allow these fascinating animals to perform the job to which they have been assigned.”

Meet “Sandy,” an extraordinary beetle that literally dropped into our lives here in the naturalist department one sunny day last week.

Native Illinois, our natural history program for third-graders, was winding down out in the Hickory Knolls Natural Area, when one of our instructors, Kim Haag, happened to look down.

Hooked onto her leg was not, thankfully, a third-grader, but rather an insect that measured about an inch long – big enough to notice, yet not so large as to elicit a “Yow!” Mostly brown, with a black pronotum, its coloring was attractive but not remarkable.

Its antennae, though, were nothing short of spectacular.

Wow! Jeanette Joy, who had been playing the role of a Potawatomi Native in the program, came over and agreed that the beetle was unlike any she had seen before. Although surrounded by artifacts that dated back hundreds of years, she also had a smartphone, and proceeded to snap several pictures of the decidedly unique critter.

From there, the race was on to identify the little bugger.

Thanks once again to our favorite online field guide, BugGuide.net, it wasn’t too hard to track down the beetle’s family, Rhipiceridae, the cedar beetles. As beetle families go, this one’s pretty small, with only one genus, Sandalus, and five species occurring in North America.

I’m hesitant to try to identify this insect down to species, since very little is known about the family. But to me, the exact name doesn’t matter as much as its ecological niche or job is.

Sandalus beetles parasitize cicada nymphs. Female beetles are gifted with the ability to track down the slits in tree branches where female cicadas laid their eggs. The female beetles lay their eggs in or near the same location, and when the eggs hatch the little larvae – which, astoundingly, have legs, but only until they advance to their next stage of development – dig down and latch onto the young cicadas.

Sandalus larvae go through what is known as hypermetamorphosis. Whereas most baby beetles spend much of their juvenile lives as lumpy grubs, young Sandalus larvae start out as triungulins – silverfish-like creatures with well-developed legs, which they use to get them where they need to go – down, down

underground, to where the cicada nymphs are feeding, on tree roots.

Nobody really knows what happens after that, but the presumption is that the beetle larvae feeds and molts several times, then pupates and emerges as an adult. Then it’s the common adult insect drill of mate-and-die. No feeding is necessary, as nutrient needs were met by the cicada nymph.

Besides, at least in our area, there really isn’t time for food.

Adult Sandalus beetles conduct their business late in the year – October is typical – and there are some reports of mating activity even after snow has fallen. The beetles are known for congregating on tree trunks, probably near

When was the last time you, or someone you know, uttered those fateful words, “Oh, it’s just a bug,” then proceeded to spray, swat or stomp to smithereens some unfortunate member of Class Insecta?

It’s true, insects’ generally small sizes make them seem insignificant. The cecropia moth, which happens to be the largest insect native to Illinois, seems miniscule when compared to, say, an African Goliath beetle larva, which can weigh as much as a Quarter Pounder. But even a Double Quarter Pounder with cheese is small and inconsequential when compared to a mighty human being. (Now, a mighty hungry human being would beg to differ, but we’re not going there right now.)

Something I like to call The Yow Factor plays a role, too, when it comes to public perception of insects. We tend to think that two legged creatures are “like us,” while four leggeds are at the very least “familiar” – all the more so if we can work them, eat them or keep them as pets.

But when the leg-count total starts to creep higher, so too do people’s heebie jeebies.

Six legs can cause uneasiness; eight legs, unrest; and when the number hits 10 or more, a primal “Yow!” often results. I can’t help but remember the day a giant desert centipede, Scolopendra heros, appeared rather suddenly in the bookstore at Carlbad Caverns in New Mexico. “Yow!” doesn’t begin to describe the sounds tourists and staff alike uttered as the eight-inch creature scuttled its way cross the floor and beneath a bookcase.

I know it’s asking too much for everyone, everywhere, to appreciate all arthropods, all the time. But if we dial back the number of legs to six, and focus – for today – on just one family, we may find the Yow factor changing to Wow, as in “Wow, insects are amazingly important. In the future I will consider putting down my spray/swatter/shoe away

where they emerged from the ground. Males fly about, relying on those fantastic antennae to detect female chemical cues.

Once mating occurs, it’s all over for the adults. It’s up to their progeny to carry on the important work of helping to control cicada populations.

The next time you, or someone you know, is tempted to whack a bug (or spider, or centipede, or ...) stop for just a second to consider just why that creature exists here on Earth. You’ll soon see, there’s really no such thing as “just a bug.”

If you’re a fan of things like cicada parasite beetles, you may be interested in meeting others who share that special sort of enthusiasm.

Resident offers debt-reduction plan

But Oberg said Garrett is mistaken that the district has $60 million in reserve.

“That is the fund balance at the end of June. That has early tax dollars in there,” Oberg said. “Those dollars have to pay for the whole year before we get more tax dollars in there.”

Oberg said the only reserves are $14 million in a working cash fund used for in-district cash-flow loans.

“It’s not our savings account – it’s the fund balance,” Oberg said. “When we say reserves, that is what we have left after we bring in all our revenues and expenses. But that changes at any point in time, from month to month, we have revenue coming in, expenses going out. It’s a moving target.”

Garrett disagreed.

“Call it whatever she wants. Nine [fund] balances are adding up to $82 million,” Garrett said. “The district still has got a lot of money to enact a debt repayment plan.”

GENEVA – As Geneva District 304 ponders how best to tame its future debt payments, a district resident with expertise in municipal bonds has offered a different scenario.

Dan Garrett, who lost a recent bid for the school board, met with district officials this week to discuss his proposal.

Garrett said he plans to present his debt-reduction strategy at the next Finance Committee meeting and school board meeting, both on Monday.

The finance meeting is at 5:30 p.m. and school board at 7 p.m., both at Williamsburg Elementary School, 1812 Williamsburg Ave., Geneva.

The district’s challenge is how to contain increased annual debt payments on its various building bond issues.

The district’s payment for 2013 was $18.7 million, but it is scheduled to go up to $20.3 million for 2014, $22 million in 2015, $23.6 million in 2016, up to nearly $25 million in 2018.

Instead of supporting any

scenarios presented recently by the district’s bond underwriter, William Blair, Garrett recommended the district use a portion of its cash reserves to buy back some of its bonds.

“Using your own money to call bonds, that should be one of the options,” Garrett said.

“Take $30 million from $60 million we have in reserves and invest in our bonds, and make interest on it. In 2017, it is the first time we can pay debt back early,” Garrett said. “Every time we call some bonds, we save interest on that amount. So after three or four years, we’re saving $1 million every year by having paid that off early.”

Following the debt payment schedule over the next 11 years, Garrett said the district not only would save $11 million – $1 million per year – it would save $15 million in interest.

“It’s a pretty good return to avoid all that interest,” Garrett said. “The problem with the William Blair plan is, it does not pay anything off

OPINIONS OUR VIEW: THUMBS UP/THUMBS DOWN Thumbs up: Politicians and community leaders of all kinds gathered Monday afternoon in Elburn, plunging shovels into the earth at a groundbreaking event to mark the beginning of the Anderson Road extension, which ultimately will bring a much-needed bridge crossing to the area.

It is a vital project that required a great deal of cooperation and coordination – including more than $21 million in state, local and federal funding. Officials from Kane County and Elburn were there, along with state Rep. Kay Hatcher, a representative from U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin’s office and those representing ShoDeen and Kaneland School District 302.

Anderson Road currently ends at Prairie Valley Street in Elburn. The extension will push the road past the Metra station area in Elburn and over the tracks. At this point, those driving through Elburn are prone to be stuck at the tracks on Route 47, where studies show 105 trains a day pass through. In the future, drivers will be able to avoid train traffic by taking Anderson Road.

Years in the making, the project ultimately is an example of what government and community leadership should be – people coming together and working hard to help create something that will benefit thousands of people.

Thumbs down: To bullying that takes place in any scenario. It’s a horrible practice, and those victimized by bullies can be made to feel so awful that they no longer can get through the day.

The reaction to a recent NFL case – in which Miami Dolphins offensive lineman Richie Incognito was suspended after he was accused of bullying actions against teammate Jonathan Martin – was encouraging. In the past, it’s likely such reports would have been dismissed, and the bullied player might have been told to toughen up or leave.

This time, the report has been taken seriously, and it has opened up a greater discussion about bullying in professional football. At least an NFL player has the option to leave a situation like that. In our schools, students don’t always have that choice, and they have to suffer every day. It has been a locally documented problem, with recent developments – a St. Charles mother has filed a lawsuit against St. Charles School District 303 and another child’s parents after she said her son was bullied at school.

Bullies, however, do have a choice. They’ve made a decision to make someone else’s life miserable, and they often are aware of the effect they have.

Bullies operate best in silence, so the prominence of such cases is important. When someone makes the decision to be a bully, it sends people scrambling to react. How should bullies be punished? How can the victim be protected? There is a simple solution for those who are bullies – just stop what you’re doing.

It’s not OK to be a bully.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR It’s not really ‘all about the kids’ To the Editor: Geneva taxpayers, your school district superintendent, Dr. Kent Mutchler, just got a raise and a new employee contract. If you aren’t aware, it’s no surprise, as it was discussed in a closed-door session and then approved when the public meeting was reconvened after the audience left.

Here is what it includes: • Employment from July 1, 2013, through June 30, 2018; • 100 percent of premiums paid for medical and dental for him and immediate family; • A base salary of $203,720 for the 2013-14 school year, which is a 2.5 percent increase over the previous year (total compensation with benefits being higher than that); • A term-life insurance policy in the amount of twice his base salary; • A yearly $5,000 contribution to a tax-deferred annuity program; • 100 percent payment of required contributions to the Illinois Teacher’s Retirement System and Teacher’s Health Insurance Security Fund; • 30 sick days a year that can accumulate from year to year to an unlimited number; • 4 paid personal days a year; • 25 paid vacation days a year (10 of these days can rollover to the next year); • 6½ vacation days a year that can be sold back to

the district at the rate of 260th of his base salary (in 2013-14, that rate is $783.54 a day); • In 2013, an additional $9,000 contribution to a tax-deferred annuity in recognition of 2012-13 performance; • With prior consent of the board, Dr. Mutchler can undertake professional development; • Paid membership fees for five different associations; • $400 toward a yearly physical; • $800 a month for travel expenses; • And a two-year interest free loan to finance a vehicle purchased from the district.

Yes, you read that right, a two-year interest free car loan for an employee that is compensated more than $200,000 per year. If the teachers felt they were slapped in the face last year, how should taxpayers feel this year?

The school board will be voting on the 2013 tax levy in the next two months, with a possible maximum increase of 1.7 percent. Your taxes will increase because of ridiculous spending like Dr. Mutchler’s contract. It is time that residents demand the insanity stop.

I would like to know who ordered that beautiful, healthy maple tree cut down, the one in the 1700 block of Indiana Avenue. To the caller of “Not a good solution,” who suggested that it would be cheaper to pay the penalty for not having insurance and continue to use the ER for health care, I have very good insurance.

I have had to visit the ER several times, and I could tell you, I would hate to have to depend on the ER doctors for my health care. I have known of two cases where they had to be hospitalized and were released too soon because they had no insurance. Both died within days. If you don’t have anything else, you do need insurance.

West Chicago honors Geneva couple’s business

By MARY BETH VERSACI mversaci@shawmedia.com WEST CHICAGO – When the Andersens were looking to go into the coffee industry, they knew they wanted to do things differently.

Rather than working with just anyone, Eric and Krista Andersen of Geneva sought to benefit small farmers from around the world directly by partnering with importers and foundations that support farming communities with education and other services.

“We don’t want to just hand them money and say, ‘Go for it,’ ” Krista Andersen said. “The whole point of our

business and of our importers and the foundations we work through is education.”

The Andersens’ West Chicago-based company, FreshGround Roasting, was named Small Business of the Year by the city in recognition of the business’ unique setup and story, and the growth it has seen in its first two years as a niche business in the community, said Rosemary Mackey, the city’s marketing and communications coordinator.

FreshGround was started in 2011 and is located at 100 Arbor Ave. in downtown West Chicago. It sells six kinds of coffee beans, as well as a few blends, through its

website.

Customers can choose to have the coffee sent to them or pick it up at locations throughout the Chicago area.

In addition to selling coffee, the company also offers tasting and brewing classes for local clubs and other groups.

FreshGround Roasting engages in direct trade, which means that what the Andersens pay for the coffee beans they import directly supports the farmers that harvested those beans, Krista said.

Before opening their business, they had heard about direct trade but learned more through their own research.

“We discovered more of that potential and knew right

away that that’s what we’d rather do,” she said.

The farms that provide coffee beans to FreshGround Roasting are located in Ethiopia, Honduras, Mexico, Papua New Guinea and Uganda.

Often these farmers don’t receive a fair amount for their beans because they don’t know their products’ worth, Krista said.

Together with her husband, she hopes to change that reality through the education provided by their partners.

East students to collect food for Salvation Army

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – About 65 representatives of the St. Charles East High School student council plan to visit various subdivisions next week to collect food for The Salvation Army.

The food drive is set for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 16.

Teresa Dang, a member of the council’s executive board, said in an email that the students hope to collect more than last year’s total of about 2,005 cans.

The subdivisions the students plan to visit include Cornerstone Lakes, Pheasant Run Trails, Stuarts Crossing, Charlemagne, Majestic Oaks, Kingswood, Royal Fox, Fox Mill, Fox Chase, Persimmon Fields and Cambridge.

Those wanting to donate should leave nonperishable goods in a paper bag on their

front doorstep.

According to the Salvation Army Tri-City Corps’ website, canned soup, canned fruit, jelly and boxed dinners are items the food pantry always can use.

The Salvation Army, located at 1710 S. Seventh Ave. in St. Charles, distributes these items in food bags: soup; canned meals or canned meats; skillet dinners or box dinners, such as Hamburger Helper; pasta sauce; dry pasta; macaroni and cheese; mashed potatoes, stuffing or crackers; ramen noodles; canned or bagged rice; canned pasta, such as ravioli; canned vegetables; canned fruit; peanut butter; jelly; hot or cold cereal; and, if available, condiments and baking goods.

His platform is to bring industry back to the United States with tax incentives.

Hosta said the nation has lost 30 percent of its manufacturing jobs, directly related to imports in the last 12 years.

“I believe that the founding fathers of our country were dedicated to U.S. companies, protecting U.S. industries through tariffs,” Hosta said. “Since World War II, we have fallen away from that.

abroad. ... I think that is very anti-American. The cry of the American people is for them to be faithful to this country and bring industries back.”

Hosta also supports protections for Social Security and welfare, and said unemployment and food stamp programs need to be reviewed and strengthened – not cut.

“The elderly are scared, extremely concerned that benefits will be cut or have to be cut,” Hosta said. “And people on disability – you can’t just turn your back on them. As

a society, we are obligated to these people.”

Hosta is the second Democrat to declare for the primary, following Dennis Anderson of Gurnee. Anderson lost to incumbent Hultgren two years ago but announced in August that he would seek the Democratic nomination again. Hultgren announced in September his intention to seek re-election.

The 14th District includes seven suburban counties – Kane, DuPage, DeKalb, Will, McHenry, Lake and Kendall.

By DENNIS D. JACOBS editorial@kcchronicle.com HOFFMAN ESTATES – Friday’s IHSA Class 2A boys soccer state semifinal with St. Ignatius took on a familiar feel for Wheaton Academy.

Unfortunately for the Warriors, it ended with a familiar result.

For the second straight year, Wheaton Academy lost a state semifinal in a penalty-kick shootout. Last year, the Warriors made just one of three penalty kicks in a 2-1 loss to Peoria Notre Dame.

This time, Wheaton Academy (22-4-1) converted on six of eight attempts, but the Wolfpack (19-5-2) made seven to come away with a 2-1 win.

“We didn’t perform well in [last year’s] shootout. I guess we’re getting better,” Wheaton Academy coach Jeff Brooke quipped. “We’re just not quite there.”

For the first 59 minutes of the match, it looked like the Warriors were there. They played better in the first half, putting five shots on goal to three for St. Ignatius.

Wheaton Academy defenders Zeb Lewis, Marshall West, Parker Setran and Daniel Bergquist did an outstanding job in the opening 40 minutes limiting the Wolfpack to long shots that were relatively easy saves for goalkeeper Drew Sezonov. Meanwhile, the Warriors created several good scoring chances that severely tested keeper John Marks.

“I feel we were lucky to get out of that half without having been scored on,” St. Ignatius coach James Luzzi said.

That luck for the Wolfpack ran out less than 10 minutes into the second half when a corner kick by Wheaton Academy junior midfielder Lucas Hoepner found the right foot of West, who drilled the ball into the right corner of the goal.

“Lucas Hoepner played a great ball in,” Brooke said.

“We’d been going to the near post and he swung it in a little deeper and Marshall with just a clinical finish – volley to the window.”

St. Ignatius scored the equalizer 10 minutes later when Bryan Long laid out to get a head on a crossing pass from Marco Sanchez, and put it past Sezonov.

Sezonov was then called

upon to make several tough saves down the stretch to send the game to overtime.

“I thought after they scored, emotion started to overtake us,” Lewis said.

“Also fatigue started to set in. The combination of that made us not play defensively as well as we were.”

Wheaton Academy regrouped, however, and again

had the better run of play in the two 10-minute overtime periods. Marks alertly made a save in the first overtime on a shot by Casey Zimmerman off a quick restart, and came up big again in the second overtime, making a solid save on a good, low shot by Ty Seager.

St. Ignatius did not put a shot on goal in either overtime, and Lewis said the War-

riors were confident heading into their second semifinal shootout in as many years.

“It was literally the exact same situation as last year,” he said. “We were thinking, ‘This is our shootout. We’re gonna get this.’ That’s one of the best shootouts I’ve ever seen.”

The first three St. Ignatius shooters converted their penalty kicks, while West and Sam Hardy scored for Wheaton Academy. Marks made a save on a low shot by Seager to give the Wolfpack an advantage, but Sanchez immediately gave it back by missing the left post.

Bergquist and Zimmerman made good on their shots to send the shootout into sudden death.

The first three St. Ignatius shooters again all scored, as did Lewis and Hoepner, but Marks punched away an attempt from Grant Rougas to send the Wolfpack into Saturday’s championship match against Chicago Washington.

The Warriors will try to improve on last year’s fourthplace state finish in the thirdplace match against Rochester.

“That’s a helluva way to lose the game,” Luzzi said. “I feel extremely bad for Wheaton. They played their hearts out.”

eneva stormed to the program’s first girls volleyball sectional title behind an attack that came from all angles.

Grace Loberg smacked 14 kills in Thursday’s Class 4A Geneva Sectional final victory against St. Charles North, and Ally Barrett and Hannah Lanasa weren’t far behind with nine apiece.

It’s been that way for much of the Vikings’ breakthrough postseason, which continues with tonight’s St. Charles East Supersectional against New Trier. With Kyley Thompson also getting in on the act, having such a stable of hitters makes it easy for coach KC Johnsen to embrace a 6-2 alignment under most circumstances.

“As much as I like one setter,” Johnsen said, “it’s hard to not let all four of those hitters play.”

Setters Courtney Caruso (senior) and Megan Cameron (junior) enjoy orchestrating the offense together, and why not?

None of Geneva’s primary four hitters stands shorter than 5-foot-10. Barrett and Loberg, both standout freshmen, are fittingly 6-2.

“Oh, we’re so spoiled,” Caruso said. “It is just the best setting everyone. I can just set them any ball, and I know they’ll take care of it. If they make one mistake, they know that they just have to get the next one. They’re amazing. They’re incredible to play with.”

Johnsen salutes Caruso as “about as fierce a competitor as we’ve had” while calling Cameron “very athletic and very smart.”

Sometimes, though, simply lofting the ball to the streaking player helps alleviate pressure.

With the third game of the North match tied at 20, Loberg collected three kills around a pair of North Stars errors.

“I love being set, but it’s also great to switch it around each time,” Loberg said. “But

Geneva needs 50 more

points to advance to the state semifinals at Illinois State’s Redbird Arena in Normal next weekend. New Trier, last year’s state runner-up, has swept each of its four postseason matches to date.

With no recent history against the Trevians to rely on, Geneva knows the best bet is focusing on itself.

“It’s just who you play with and being comfortable with each other,” Caruso said.

Then settling in as the offense takes turns challenging the opposition.

Berry eager for return to QB spot St. Francis football player Justin Berry has drilled extensively at quarterback, taking lessons since age 9 at the position he one day hopes to play collegiately at the Division-I level.

This season, the St. Charles resident took a detour on that path for the good of his team.

Berry wrapped up his sophomore season at St. Francis when the Spartans were eliminated by Glenbard South last week in the first round of the IHSA Class 5A playoffs. After playing quarterback for the freshman team last year, Berry got the call up to varsity as a sophomore, but was shifted Justin Berry to cornerback, as senior Zach Prociuk was the Spartans’ QB. “To be honest, I did [struggle with it] because I’ve been working on it so much,” Berry said. “I’ve been working on it so much during the offseason and put in so much work, but it was really [important for the team to help on defense], so that kind of helped me out in dealing with not playing quarterback. But it wasn’t very easy.”

Berry expects the hiatus from quarterback to be a oneyear scenario, although he said he’s been told he’s skilled enough to play on both sides of the ball going forward.

Still, QB is where his heart is set, and where he believes his future lies. Berry already has scholarship offers from Arizona State, Temple, Akron and Youngstown State. He planned to visit Purdue this weekend, and the Boilermakers’ in-state rival, Indiana, also has shown interest, as has Boston College.

While focusing on defense took some adjusting, Berry said he enjoyed the season.

“It was really exciting and really fun for me,” Berry said.

“A lot of people would expect to be treated kind of different because you’re a sophomore but when you go out there and work just as hard as [upperclassmen] do, they really learn

St. Francis had an unfortunate break for its playoff game with Glenbard South, a 47-28 loss last Saturday in Glen Ellyn. The Spartans had to play without all-state candidate running back James Butler (concussion), a rough way to take on an undefeated opponent.

Berry said the Spartans – who finished 5-5 – were confident they could play with Glenbard South, even without Butler.

“I think the hardest thing for us was seeing how hard we fought and how hard we practiced all week, and not coming out with the win,” Berry said.

Butler was one of numerous Spartans who, from a health standpoint, limped to the finish line this season.

Berry feels fortunate he’s not among them, and is ready to attack offseason workouts.

“I feel great,” Berry said.

“I’m extremely blessed to finish the season with zero injuries whatsoever. So many guys on our team ended up kind of nicked up with injuries. I was extremely happy I didn’t miss a play, didn’t miss anything in terms of injuries, so I’m extremely happy to come out of the season healthy.”

Berry originally planned to attend St. Charles East, but made a late decision to enroll at St. Francis just before freshman year.

He said he followed the Saints’ season, too, and remains in touch with several of the East guys.

“It’s actually fun to keep up with them and stay in touch with them and not lose the relationships I had, even though I’m at St. Francis,” Berry said.

New Cubs manager Rick Renteria managed the Cougars in 1999, when the club was a Florida Marlins affiliate. He guided Kane County to a 78-59 record and was Midwest League Manager of the Year that season.

In an age of baseball where firsttime managers are enjoying unprecedented success – World Series skippers John Farrell (Red Sox) and Mike Matheny (Cardinals) had no previous managing experience at any level – it’s heartening for Scarsone to watch a fellow dues-payer cash in.

“Obviously, it’s good news,” Scarsone said. “Anytime that you’ve got a chance to see someone else doing pretty much the same plan you’re on, it gives you the reassurance it’s still possible. With anything, as long as we know we’ve got an opportunity, that’s sometimes enough to keep you working.”

Before Renteria, Carlos Tosca blazed the Midwest League-to-Major Leagues path when he managed the Toronto Blue Jays from 2002 to 2004, nine years after guiding the 1993 Cougars.

One of Tosca’s players on that club was catcher Mike Redmond, who joined the Marlins as manager in 2013.

The Cougars rightly promote the players who have graduated from Country House burgers and host family stays to four-star restaurants and hotels. With Renteria and the emerging Scarsone, the club is building bragging rights along the other side of the foul lines.

Like Renteria, Scarsone climbed through the minors as a player to reach the majors. Now, he’s hoping to do the same as a manager.

“Kind of floating in that no-man’s land between Triple-A and the Major Leagues gave me a foundation to talk to my players with real life examples and not just blowing smoke up on them,” Scarsone said. “The Triple-A level seems like it’s fit me pretty well.

Now it’s just a matter of an opportunity presenting itself.”

Rick Renteria’s recent hip surgery prevented him from traveling to Chicago on Thursday, the day he was named the Cubs’ new manager.

The Renteria Curtis Haug remembers rarely took any opportunity to associate himself with baseball sitting down.

Yes, the Renteria who will guide the North Siders is the same Renteria who managed the Cougars in Geneva in 1999. Haug, the Cougars’ general manager, was an assistant GM for the then-Florida Marlins affiliate, but he hasn’t forgotten the man who seldom made like his initials and got some R&R. “He had a great rapport with the fans. He had a great rapport with the front office, the seasonal staff. Pretty much everyone at the ballpark,” Haug said. “He was just a good people person. It’s not often that a manager has all that positive interaction with the entire ballpark, which was good.”

Renteria earned Midwest League Manager of the Year honors in his lone season with the Cougars. The club finished 78-59 and advanced to the second round of the Western Division playoffs, where it fell to eventual league champion Burlington.

The Bees were a White Sox affiliate then, and Cubs director of player development Brandon Hyde played in 65 games.

The White Sox no longer have a farm team in the Midwest League and the Marlins have since switched their nameplate to Miami, but the Cougars’ current two-year player-development contract with the Cubs now ties everything together like a tightly stitched Rawlings.

“I think this strengthens our connection between the Cougars and the Cubs moving forward,” Haug said.

“It’s just a great connection.”

Renteria, 51, had five winning seasons while managing in the Marlins’ and San Diego Padres’ systems from 1998 to 2001 and 2004 to 2007. He joined the Padres’ major league staff in 2008 and spent the past three seasons as manager Bud Black’s bench coach.

The Renteria hiring especially resonated east of San Diego. Steve Scarsone, who makes his offseason home in Arizona, has ascended the Oakland A’s system since managing the Class-A Cougars in 2009, landing with Triple-A Sacramento (Calif.) last season.

Marmion senior wrestler Anthony Bosco plans to jump from 106 pounds to 113 this season. The move heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll make next year is of a far greater scope. The St. Charles resident recently committed to wrestle collegiately for North Carolina, which gained Boscoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s services over suitors such as Southern Illinois-Edwardsville and John Carroll. Catching up with Kane County Chronicle sports reporter Kevin Druley for the latest edition of the Weekend Chit-chat, Bosco addressed his college choice and thoughts on following up on a fourth-place finish at 106 in Class 3A. The following is an edited transcript:

Congratulations on North Carolina. What was the timetable with recruiting?

We came into contact in June this past summer and had been talking for a while. â&#x20AC;Ś It was a little slower process than the rest of them, but I got to know the coaches a lot better and got to meet a lot of the guys on my visit and see their dedication. And thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s what I want to be a part of. I want to be a part of a team that wants to win.

Which other schools had you been considering?

I had taken a couple of other visits, to SIU-E and [NCAA Division III] John Carroll, then made my official visit to UNC on Tuesday and Wednesday of last week. â&#x20AC;Ś My parents [Mike and Kathy] and I sat down with me at the end of my visits and we talked about what was best for me. â&#x20AC;Ś North Carolina, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s going to help me achieve my goals in academics and in wrestling.

Do you have any family in North Carolina or in that region?

I have an aunt [his momâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sister] in South Carolina, but other than that everyone else is in the Midwest.

Weekend Chit-chat with MARMION WRESTLER ANTHONY BOSCO SIU-E and John Carroll are a little closer to home. How much did being part of a bigger Division I program drive you?

Division I, I guess, has always been a high priority for me. Getting an opportunity to A, find a new culture in an East Coast school and B, get to wrestle in a D-I school and at a place thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s second-tonone in academics, it was a hard opportunity to pass up.

Amanda Lulek, a Geneva graduate, is a freshman defender for the Hawkeyes.

Lulek was named to the Big Ten All-Freshman team earlier this season after playing in all 20 matches with 17 starts. The defender began the season as a reserve before being inserted into the starting lineup Sept. 1 at Pacific. She has played for a Hawkeye defense that has registered nine shutouts.

Lulek was credited with her lone assist at Illinois on Sept. 27.

The penalty led to a punt, and the Lions scored 21 points afterward en route to a 40-32 victory.

The Bears play the Lions again Sunday, and since Mills’ false start, they have run 299 plays in four-plus games without committing another one. “[The offensive linemen] didn’t say anything about it,” Mills said about his miscue, then laughed. “And I didn’t bring it up.”

Five offensive linemen who never played together before this past offseason, a brand-new coach and offensive system, yet this group doesn’t flinch.

“It is unusual,” said offen-

sive coordinator and O-line coach Aaron Kromer. “I just attribute it to their hard work and the confidence they have in what they’re going to get done.”

Unusual? Try remarkable. Let’s put in perspective how impressive the Bears’ discipline up front has been through nine weeks.

• The next-fewest amount of false starts in the league through nine weeks is four, by the Dolphins, Giants and Colts.

• The Chiefs have 15 false starts. The undefeated Chiefs, that is.

• Since 1999, the fewest number of false starts a Bears team has had through nine weeks is five in 2000.

• The Bears had 17 false starts through nine weeks last season, and 25 on the year. They’re on pace for two this season.

• In each of the past 11

BEARS INSIDER Kevin Fishbain seasons, the Bears have had at least 23 false starts. The fewest they had since 1999 came in 2001 when they had nine, and went 13-3.

• As good as the Saints’ offenses were during Kromer’s time in New Orleans, they never had fewer than 11 false starts through nine weeks.

At first, Bushrod wasn’t too excited to discuss the feat. Superstitious? Maybe, but he then explained that it’s a simple focus of the unit.

“Those kinds of penalties, they hurt our team,” Bushrod said. “They’re going to happen through the course of the year. Bottom line, we’re just trying to eliminate negative plays.”

“It’s always been a point of emphasis. At this point, we’ve done pretty well,” he said. “I don’t think we can be evaluated until the season’s over because it’s how you look back at it.”

In Bourbonnais, the group had its struggles with false starts and went on to commit eight in four preseason games.

“We had a few in the preseason and a few in Bourbonnais. Just working on it each day, listening to Jay’s voice and not listening to anybody else’s voice [helped the improvement,]” Mills said.

“Coach always says to hear Jay’s voice and nothing else.

It’s not going to be easy, but once you hear Jay’s voice, it should be fine.”

Kromer said that the team has used a “blasting speak-

er” during practices to get used to the noise, something that shouldn’t be a problem the next two weeks back at Soldier Field.

Trestman has been impressed with the growth he has seen since the summer from the O-line, but also showed a hint of superstition about discussing the team’s false starts. Well, false start.

“They’ve been spending a lot of time together No. 1, working with Jay and his snap count No. 2, and the job Aaron’s done coaching them is all part of the growing process,” he said. “I don’t want to talk too much about I just hope we continue to have that focus and concentration.”

Faith Christian Academy finishes 7th at state KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE Faith Christian Academy, a private school serving Geneva-area families for 32 years, capped a record volleyball season by finishing in seventh place out of 24 schools at the Lutheran Sports Association state tournament Sunday in Springfield. While downstate, the Falcons broke the school record for victories, as their 39 wins were the most in the volleyball program’s 19year history.

The Falcons opened the tournament facing defending state champion Peoria Christ Lutheran School in the first round of pool play Nov. 1. Peoria entered the weekend as the tournament’s No. 2 seed and owned a 27-1 record, but Faith Christian handed Peoria its second loss of the season with a 25-20, 25-17 victory. Several Falcons led Faith to victory.

Gigi Crescenzo delivered nine kills, Anneliese Lockner and Jessica Smith had nine assists apiece, and Lockner went 14 for 14 serving with five service winners. The win was Faith Christian’s 36th of the season, breaking the single-season school record for victories. The previous mark was 35 wins set in 2011.

FCA went on to win its pool with a 3-0 record, beating Salem Lutheran of Jacksonville, 25-7, 25-9, and Trinity Lutheran of Edwardsville, 22-25, 25-15, 25-11. Lockner blistered Salem Lutheran with 11 for 11 serving and eight service winners while Smith and Lauren Caprini had five assists apiece.

The Falcons bounced back Sunday, defeating Our

Savior’s Lutheran School of Springfield, 25-10, 25-11, to earn seventh place. FCA finished in 12th place in its first appearance at state in 2011. Lockner and Nicki Smith propelled the Falcons with 9 for 9 serving, while Caprini registered a team-high eight kills.

Representing FCA at state were team captains Caprini, Lockner and Will along with Nicki and Jessica Smith, Crescenzo, Anna Verhage, Jessica Chiaro and Meagan Clemens. Faith Christian concluded its season with a final season record at 39-8. The varsity squad’s record was 24-6, while the JV team went 15-2. FCA enjoyed many season highlights, including the championship at the 12-team Aurora Central Catholic Eighth-Grade Invitational, a first-place tie at the Aurora Christian Tournament and a third-place showing at the Elgin St. John Lutheran Tournament. The Falcons also reached a milestone when they registered their 400th win in the history of the program in a victory at Cross Lutheran School of Yorkville Sept. 16.

FCA has amassed a 434-113 record in 19 seasons of volleyball.

Also representing the Falcons this season were Corrin Schulze, Mackenzie VanDerSnick, Paige Petty, Liz Watson, Rose McCormick, Grace Hansen, Jessica Kohlmeyer, Julia Turek, Bethany Nielsen, Clara Demaray and Taylor Tinnes.

Difficult life events call for cleansing I’m cleaning up my act. No, not my wardrobe (sorry, Holly – she says she wishes she could nominate me for the old television show “What Not to Wear”), but the rest of it.

And no, I don’t mean my house. I mean the important stuff.

A number of things happened recently, including the death of a close friend due to cancer and medical adventures among family and friends, that remind me that there’s so much about life over which we have precious-little control – we’re swimming in a toxic soup of God-knowswhat, for one thing, and I’m ticked-off about it – but there are a few things over which we do.

We can choose to feel vulnerable to the possibilities or we can take matters into our own hands and do what we can to minimize the “toxic load” we expose ourselves and our children to. Many believe that it’s the pileup of toxins in our bodies that has the cumulative effect of making conditions ripe for disease. This mama bear’s inclined to agree, and prefers to take action.

Teflon-coated cookware (prone to being scratched and releasing carcinogenic fluorocarbons into air and food)?

Out you go. And you, you old, plastic containers of questionable safety? You’re out of here, too. So is the supposedly safe BPA-free stuff for which I already have stainless-steel or glass replacements.

Awesome side-benefit? My kitchen storage woes have all but disappeared, too, but I digress.

It goes without saying that I almost

TALES FROM THE MOTHERHOOD Jennifer DuBose never drink out of plastic water or soda bottles. No thanks. And I’ve long-since ditched those plastic sandwich baggies in favor of the wax paper ones. I’m on a roll.

And hit the road for good, Mr. Microwave, with your sneaky radiation and nutrient-killing rays.

What’s that, you say?

“Nooooooo!” was my kids’ chorus.

“What about microwave popcorn?”

“What about it?” I replied.

We haven’t made microwave popcorn in this house in well over a year, since I saw that diacetyl, the chemical added to create a buttery flavor, has been linked to debilitating lung damage in microwavable-popcorn factory workers and, in some cases, in consumers.

No thank you. I may be a killjoy, but I’ll pick my poisons.

I’m way past opting for organic milk and produce not sprayed with poisonous pesticides (studies show that some cannot be washed off, no matter how hard you try). Been doing that for years.

I’m also getting pickier about buying meat only from grass-fed, cage-free animals fed organic food.

Pricey? You betcha.

But the way I see it, until our voices are heard and our votes counted, we can

pay up now at the grocery store or pay much more later, at the pharmacy and in co-pays.

And what about those meals we eat out? I can only think of two eateries in our area, off the top of my head, which serve organic, “clean” food – the SweetGrass Café at Soup to Nuts in Geneva and Fresh D’Lite in the Geneva Commons.

(Prasino in St. Charles was my favorite, until they closed last year. I still miss those fish tacos.)

Is that really it?

You don’t have to be a liberal to be fed up with the added junk called “food” that we’ve been fed, but the “toxic load” doesn’t just come from things we consume. Consider other things our society has long subscribed to, that may do more harm than good, like dental X-rays and fluoride trays used on young children, for example. Why do these every year, as a matter of course? I like to do a “cost-benefit analysis,” if you will.

Is there pain or evidence of disease?

Well, OK then. Do an X-ray. Do my kids have “soft” teeth? Had multiple cavities?

None and none, where mine are concerned.

So, consequently, we’re forgoing what I think are unnecessary X-rays and fluoride treatments. Remember, it’s about the toxic load. Less is more.

I’ve also had it with antiperspirant products containing aluminum (long-considered a likely carcinogen), particularly now that my kids are adolescents.

For years I’ve tried other products, those not containing aluminum, thus

only possessing deodorant qualities. The trouble is, they tend to leave me sticky and soupy.

Nuff said.

But, two months ago, I finally stumbled upon a product that doesn’t.

Hallelujah! DeOm deodorant, made by local mom Kaylene Shannon (of Elgin), contains natural and organic ingredients and can be ordered from her website ticklebodycare.com (check out reviews on her Facebook page, too, Tickle Body Care).

I’m hoping local retailers will carry it soon as it’s my new deodorant of choice.

While not billed as such, it also, in my opinion, works quite well as an antiperspirant. I love, love, love DeOm and will never go back to the other junk! Nor will my kids, if I can help it.

“You’re always changing stuff in my house!” Holly laments, though she does like this stuff. Noah rolls his eyes. (He still hasn’t tried it, but perhaps he will, in time.) But a mom’s gotta do what a mom’s gotta do. That said, every mom (and dad) has her own threshold. What gives me peace of mind may be different from what gives you, yours. Cool. So be it.

Come to think of it, another known carcinogen? Stress.

Worrying too much about this stuff can certainly be stressful, so I don’t worry for long. I just get it done.

ELGIN – The four-piece, all-women band Stella! will perform at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, at Elgin Community College in Elgin.

The performance will take place in the SecondSpace Theatre, located in the Building H Arts Center on the Spartan Drive Campus, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin.

The band, which hails from southeast Michigan, was created by singer-songwriter Jo Serrapere.

Serrapere was inspired to put together a new group to showcase country-roots songwriting.

The band includes Serrapere and three other musician/songwriters – Jen Sy-

Mystery authors write debut novel, ‘Thoreau at Devil’s Perch’ lived in separate spheres at that time.

And to make it all the more interesting, we decided to have the two characters telling the story develop a strong sexual attraction for each other as the mystery unfolds.

Beth Oak: It’s not just a sexual attraction. Julia and Adam have loved each other since they were children. Their love might even go back centuries. They could well be soul mates that have lived past lives together. This ties in with Thoreau’s open-mindedness to the possibility of reincarnation.

By DA KENTNER More Content Now B.B. Oak is the pseudonym for the writing duo Ben and Beth Oak. Connecticut natives, they met at Boston University and have been together ever since. Besides the enjoyment they find in each other, the pair of writers has an affinity for Henry David Thoreau.

It is this kinship and respect, as well as a love of mystery that inspired the Oaks to create a unique, though very real, role for the iconic Walden Pond resident.

In Beth and Ben’s debut novel, “Thoreau at Devil’s Perch,” Thoreau adopts a Sherlock Holmes style of investigating as the storied author and poet seeks to identify the killer of a young black man he found at the bottom of a rocky crag called Devil’s Perch. Told through the voices of Thoreau’s partners in this investigation, displaced lovers Julia Bell and Dr. Adam Walker, the Oaks draw upon Thoreau’s own documented words, passions and survival skills to create a scenario so believable, many will agree that Thoreau could have rivaled the greatest detectives of the time had he chosen that pursuit.

The Oaks go to great detail to remain true to the era, and the end results are carefully crafted settings, such as the woodlands, town streets and businesses, and even a den of ill-repute. Historical fans will find little to raise a brow at.

Thoreau fans will discover a character much like the man himself who speaks in his time-tested manner that has kept readers enthralled for centuries.

Mystery fans will have their powers of observation tested against that of Thoreau, the American version of Holmes.

And, of course, if Thoreau is Holmes, then star-crossed lovers and narrators Adam and Julia are Watson.

“Thoreau at Devil’s Perch” has something for everyone. Most of all, it contains a very enjoyable, well-written story utilizing uncommon characters that will create fans for books to come.

And, yes, the next tale in the series is on the horizon.

DA Kentner: Placing Thoreau in any role

DA: Even Sherlock Holmes grew and changed as a character. Will readers see Thoreau grow as well in future books, and if so, what areas do you see as potential areas for change?

B.B. Oak, the pseudonym for the writing duo Ben and Beth Oak, wrote “Thoreau at Devil’s Perch.” other than “expected” could have been a literary death knell. But you pull it off. What gave you the self-confidence to turn Thoreau into a man determined to solve a murder others scoff at?

Ben Oak: Thoreau’s own self-confidence inspired us. He never gave a hang about what others expected of him. It was Thoreau, after all, who coined the phrase about marching to the sound of your own drummer.

Like all great gumshoes, he was a loner with his own sense of honor and justice.

Beth Oak: And he was a master of observation and deduction, as his journals demonstrate. So, we simply portrayed him as he was in life, a natural born detective devoted to seeking out the truth and fighting injustices.

DK: Julia and Adam are risky characters – cousins in love. Why create an atmosphere of forbidden romance for them in a story already rife with intrigue?

Ben Oak: We wanted the mystery to unfold from both a male and female perspective because men and women

the first book opens, filled with expectations and wide open to change.

Ben Oak: As in real life, he’ll become less a loner when he leaves Walden Pond. He’ll form very close relationships with others.

Beth Oak: Especially with Mrs. Emerson. In our second book, Thoreau is living with Lidian while Ralph Waldo travels in Europe.

Ben Oak: Thoreau has a lot of trials and disappointments ahead of him, but he’ll always remain purposeful and principled. We intend to stay true to the basic elements of the real Thoreau’s character, which we find inspiring.

Beth Oak: And we hope to show him as he really was, a vital young man full of joy and warmth and love.

DK: Any parting comments for readers?

Ben Oak: The sort of historical mysteries I want to read are well-researched, have fascinating characters that reflect the era, and are filled with rousing action and unexpected plot twists. Weren’t those the criteria we used when we wrote our book?

Beth Oak: Yes, but it’s up to the readers, not us, to declare if we met them. My only parting comment for them is that I hope they enjoy reading “Thoreau at Devil’s Perch” as much as we enjoyed writing it.

Prevent flat spots on baby’s head by varying his position Dear Doctor K: I know it’s safer for my baby to sleep on his back, but I’m worried he’ll develop flat spots on the back of his head.

What can I do to prevent this?

Dear Reader: Flat spots on the head are becoming more common in babies. As you suspect, that’s likely because more babies are sleeping on their backs than on their bellies.

We want babies to sleep on their backs to decrease the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Since the “Back to Sleep” recommendation went into effect in 1994, the rate of SIDS has dropped by half.

But sleeping on the back does put pressure on the back of a baby’s head. Babies have soft, malleable skulls. This helps them get through the birth canal and allows for the rapid brain growth that happens during infancy. It also makes their skulls sensitive to pressure, especially when that pressure is always in the same place.

Flat spots don’t cause brain damage or affect brain function.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff They can, however, lead to teasing if the shape is very abnormal.

To prevent flat spots, change the position of your baby’s head throughout the day: • Give your baby “tummy time” when he is awake and being watched. Do this for at least a few minutes a few times a day.

• Carry your baby in a sling or other baby carrier to take pressure off his head.

• Vary the position of your baby’s head when he is lying down.

You may have to literally turn his head so he is facing the other way.

If your baby prefers one side to another, position his seat or bassinet during the day so that the more interesting things to look at are on the less-preferred side.

Few parts of our body were built to take constant challenge and pressure. Many parts are always working – like the heart and lungs. However, even they get a bit of a rest at night. And our bones, muscles and joints regularly get a break during the day and when we sleep.

Bed sores, for example, develop when sick people in bed all day are not turned regularly to put pressure on different parts of their body.

So, there are ways to protect the shape of your baby’s head and to prevent flat spots from forming on his soft skull. But whatever you do, keep putting your baby on his back to sleep! It greatly reduces the risk of SIDS.

Responder redoubles, but opener runs

After the opener bids one of a suit and the next player makes a takeout double, if the responder redoubles, it shows at least 10 high-card points and often a desire to try to penalize the opponents. So, if fourth hand (the advancer) bids a suit, the opener (unless he can double with length there) typically passes to give his partner a chance to double.

In contrast, what does it mean if the opener bids immediately, in front of his partner?

The answer is that the opener has a minimum or subminimum opening bid with offensive, not defensive, values. An example is the North hand in the diagram.

He has only 11 high-card points and a hand that is built for declarer play, not defense. South, a tad disappointed, signs off in three no-trump.

West leads the heart three, and East puts in the eight. After winning with his king, how should declarer proceed?

South starts with only five top tricks: one spade, two hearts and two diamonds. However, he can hope to win at least six diamond tricks, if not seven. But he must be careful not to play a diamond to dummy’s jack. Then he would fall foul of the foul 4-0 split.

Instead, declarer must finesse dummy’s nine on the first round.

Here, he ends with 11 tricks: one spade, two hearts, seven diamonds and one club. But even if East could take the first diamond trick, the contract would be safe.

Finally, note that many experts play an immediate jump rebid but opener also indicates a bare 11 or 12 points, with a hand having even more winners and scant defensive values.
