Ideal conditions for a whole lot of geese GOOD NATURED Pam Erickson Otto Canada geese, you might have noticed, are everywhere these days.

With the summer breeding season over, these ubiquitous waterfowl are back in their flocks – a great winter survival strategy – and are teeming about cornfields, athletic fields and other grassy expanses. They also are paddling around local wetlands and other water bodies, and in general making themselves hard to miss. Even at night, when you can’t see them, it’s not hard to know where they are – their honks and squawks give them away every time.

The birds and their sounds are unmistakable.

And if you follow the old adage of “birds of a feather flock together,” it would be logical to think all those geese belong to one homogeneous group. After all, they certainly look the same. But looks, as they say, aren’t everything.

What we actually are seeing right now are two different groups, or subspecies, of Branta canadensis. Individu-

They might look similar, but the flocks of geese present throughout the Tri-Cities actually represent two different subspecies, the giant Canada goose and the interior, or Hudson Bay Canada goose. Research this winter will examine the dynamics of these two groups and help determine future management strategies. als of B.c. maxima, the giant Canada goose, make up our resident population. These guys are nonmigratory; that is, they might fly short distances in search of food, water or breeding territory, but they are present in the Tri-Cities year round.

The other group is a migratory subspecies, B.c. interior, also known as the Todd’s goose or Hudson Bay Canada goose. These birds, identified as part of the Mississippi Valley subpopulation, arrived in our area a

few weeks ago.

To the casual observer, the two subspecies appear nearly identical. True to its name, maxima is a little bigger; meanwhile, interior has a somewhat darker coloration, especially along the back. If you’re not familiar with the nuances of birding, these differences can be hard to spot.

But what’s easy to see is the birds’ behavior. Our resident birds, used to people, used to traffic and (unfortunately) used to handouts,

hold their ground or shift away slowly when approached. The interior geese, however, are much more skittish. The slightest movement, cough or, in my case, click of a camera shutter, can spook a flock and send them airborne amid a din of honks and flapping wings.

It might not sound like a big deal, this business about goose subspecies. After all, the physical differences between the birds are minor, and the behaviors are, for most people, a novelty at best.

But for scientists who study birds, the migratory flocks are displaying some changes that may indeed be significant. During the past several decades, these birds seem to have changed their habits with regard to migration. That is, they’re not flying as far south as they used to.

Migration for any species is difficult, and for a goose, in particular a flight south easily could end up being its last. For one thing, hunting season is in full swing. Migration flights also are physically taxing. Birds must be in top physical condition, and be able to find quality

Early tickets available for Geneva’s Christmas House Tour

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – No sooner had tickets gone on sale for the annual Geneva Christmas Walk and House Tour than Joyce Peterson dropped by the Geneva Chamber of Commerce office to buy six.

“We’ve been going every year with my daughters, and we love it,” said Peterson, 77, a Geneva resident. “I have four daughters. Three will join us and two granddaughters, so there will be six of us this year.”

The house tour features five Geneva homes decorated for Christmas. The tour will be the same days as the Christmas Walk, on Dec. 4 and 5. The Christmas Walk kicks off the holiday shopping season in downtown Geneva with special events, a tree lighting, and the arrival of the Swedish symbol of the season – Santa Lucia – and Santa Claus.

House tour tickets will cost $30. Participants go for self-guided tours from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Dec. 4 and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 5. A Holiday Tea at the Congregational Church is included in the ticket price.

The Simner house was part of the Geneva Christmas Walk and House Tour last year.

This year’s tour, set for Dec. 4 and 5, features five local homes decorated for the holidays. Tickets are available at the Geneva Chamber of Commerce by calling 630232-6060.

Peterson said the family has never missed a house

“The houses are decorated beautifully. We get ideas and go for lunch and go to the different stores,” Peterson said. “We never missed a house, even when it was cold.

It’s a very special holiday

time that starts our holiday.

I love Christmas. I have seven Christmas trees and approximately 50 to 100 Santas. I have six children and 15 grandchildren, so our house is very lively at Christmas.”

Peterson said she keeps the

house tour books and has favorites.

“One of the homes I had written down that was absolutely our favorite was the Serluco house on James Street,” Peterson said. “That was our favorite.”

MEASURES OF SUCCESS

Longtime instructor offers piano, composition lessons

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – The year when Carol Hoepe decided she could truly teach music composition was 2005.

That’s when she helped then-Batavia High School junior Kurt Isaacson write a 12tone musical piece, which requires the use of all 12 pitches on the chromatic scale.

When Isaacson played the challenging piece for his teacher, Hoepe said, the teacher’s chin dropped.

“It was pretty tremendous, it really was,” she said. “The expression on [the teacher’s] face was ‘I can’t believe he did it.’ ” Isaacson went on to receive degrees at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and Stanford University before becoming a Los Angeles-based composer.

Hoepe since then has helped dozens of other students win state and national awards and prepare for further studies in music.

Hoepe teaches weekly piano, harpsichord and music composition lessons out of her Batavia home. Although she formally began offering composition in 2005, she has taught piano for “a few decades” since she was 18.

In all, Hoepe estimates she has taught more than 1,500 students and counting.

The students will come up with four measures every two weeks until they have four lines of music in two months, Hoepe said. As the students develop their pieces, Hoepe will give feedback and make suggestions for improvement.

One of Hoepe’s students, Geneva High School sophomore Kate Kilmer, 15, started composing music in first grade because of her musical siblings. Kilmer was a firstplace winner in 2014 in the small ensemble division of the Illinois Music Education Association annual composition contest.

tion in 2014 in the elementary division of the Music Teachers National Association state-level composition contest in Illinois.

Ellie said piano and composition lessons with Schubert helped her learn how to play violin and also have a better grasp on the music used in the Immanuel Lutheran

Church choir in Batavia.

Hoepe organizes several events where her students will come together and perform their pieces, including an annual spring recital at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Aurora.

St. Charles parade deadline extended

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The Downtown St. Charles Partnership is giving businesses and organizations even more time to participate in the upcoming Electric Christmas Parade.

The deadline for parade entries has been extended to Wednesday, the partnership announced Friday.

Executive Director Lynne Schwartz said the partnership – which organizes the event – has continued to get inquiries about submissions, so it extended the deadline to be fair to anyone who might have missed earlier deadlines.

Set for 5:30 p.m. Nov. 28, the parade is the final activity during Holiday Homecoming, a two-day event that begins with at 5 p.m. Nov. 27 with the lighting of the lights on First Street Plaza in downtown St. Charles.

Schwartz described the parade as “such a beloved event” that spectators have braved inclement weather, including rain a few years ago.

“It really hasn’t stopped people from coming out,” she said.

Businesses, nonprofits and other organizations wanting to participate in the parade must complete and return the parade entry form, safety guidelines and certificate of insurance.

The application fee is $250 for businesses, $125 for Downtown St. Charles Partnership members and free for local nonprofit organizations.

Fox Valley Hospice undergoes name change to reflect services GENEVA – Fox Valley Volunteer Hospice in Geneva is changing its name to Fox Valley Hands of Hope to reflect the agency’s expansive services for bereavement.

“We’re really trying to help people understand what we do,” said Kathy Melone,

“We already help a lot of people who are struggling with grief,” Melone said. “All services are free of charge. If you were to have a child die

or parent or spouse – people have to work through that grief. What we do here is provide one-on-one counseling and support groups. It’s our mission to give people hope.”

The name change came over the summer as the agency’s board of directors sought to change its logo and tweak its mission statement, she said.

hosting a celebration of its transition to its new name at a public event, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Nov. 17 at Hotel Baker, 100 W. Main St., St. Charles. There will be a presentation at 6:30 p.m. Hors d’oeuvres, wine and beer will be served.

Coach George “Chick” Evans, from 1950-1952, earning three varsity letters in football and a letter in golf.

He played fullback and defensive back for Evans’ Northern Illinois teams, including the undefeated 1951 team that won the IIAC title and went 9-0-0 and received a bid from the Tangerine Bowl.

Obtaining both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from NIU, Pheanis began his coaching career in 1953-54 as head football coach and athletics director at Warren Township High School and as head football coach at McHenry High School in 1955-57. At the request of Mr. Evans, Jack returned to NIU in 1957-58 as an assistant in football as well as basketball and swimming and undertook men’s golf as interim coach for three seasons.

Under Head Football Coach Howard Fletcher, Jack coached the Offensive and Defensive Backs and designed and implemented the Huskies’ famed spread office during an era when Northern first moved into the national spotlight. During Jack’s football coaching career at NIU, the team won three IIAC titles (1963-65), made three Mineral Water Bowl appearances (1962-63, 1965), and won the NAIA/AP College Division National Championship (1963). Jack’s spread offense was utilized by the Dallas Cowboys as the model for their shotgun offense of the late 1960s.

In 1969, Jack began what would

become a 37-year career as the Head Men’s Golf Coach, building upon his success as interim golf coach from 1958 to 1960, in which his 1959 golf team captured the NCAA College Division Midwest Regional and his 1960 group won the IIAC links crown.

Jack’s teams produced two major-college All-America selections in Mick Soli and Greg Dick, four NCAA Tournament qualifiers, and 17 all-conference performers.

His teams won seven league team championships that included NIU’s first-ever MAC Championship in 1976 and again in 1985, and four Mid-Continent Conference Championships.

Coach Pheanis was named Conference Coach of the Year six times and had three Academic All-Americans.

Coach Pheanis is the only individual in the school’s history to be enshrined into the NIU Athletics Hall of Fame four times: as an individual in 1988, as head coach of the 1976 men’s golf team, as assistant football coach on the 1963 NCAA College Division National Championship football team that finished 10-0-0, and as starting fullback on the 1951 IIAC title football team that went 9-0-0.

In 2002, he served on the committee to name the playing surface at Huskie Stadium “Brigham Field” in honor of his friend and longtime Huskie Athletic Director, Dr. Robert Brigham. He helped found NIU’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes chapter, and spearheaded the incep-

tion of the Midwestern Regional Golf Tournament that fielded teams from both the MAC and the Big Ten. He was also instrumental in moving the golf team to its current location in Sugar Grove at Rich Harvest Farms, and envisioned and worked toward the Huskies’ hosting the NCAA Golf Championship at that wonderful facility.

He is survived by his wife of 41 years, the former Ruth Benson of DeKalb; sons, Mark (Terri) of Geneva and Mike (Shawn) of Gulfport, Florida; stepdaughters, Kathryn (Lane) DeVries of Arcata, California, and Sue (Curt) Peterson of Rockford; stepson, Brian (Katie) Hart of Byron; grandchildren, Erin Gidley, Sean and Kasie Pheanis, Alaina Ginsberg, Jackie Maxwell, Natalie and Hannah Hart, Steven and Samantha Bradley, Amber Solar, and Tony and Sarah DeVries; great-grandchildren, Riley Gidley and Ava Solar; and sister, Jeannine Gilfoy from Olympia Fields.

He was preceded in death by his

parents; and stepson, Stephen Hart.

Friends, family and Huskies are invited to attend the Memorial Mass for Coach Pheanis at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 11, at St. Mary Catholic Church, 321 Pine Street, DeKalb, with Fr. Dean E. Russell officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Park Cemetery, DeKalb, with full military honors. Following the burial, a life celebration will be held from 11:30 to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at River Heights Golf Course Clubhouse at 1020 Sharon Drive, DeKalb.

Coach Jack W. Pheanis, 87, of DeKalb, Illinois, passed away Friday, November 6, 2015, at Pine Acres Retirement Center.

Born December 30, 1927, in Chicago Heights, the son of Mark and Vera (Mackler) Pheanis, Jack attended Mount Carmel High School in Chicago and played football there until he transferred to Bloom Township High School in Chicago Heights. He played halfback on two South Suburban Conference championship teams making all-league as a senior. Upon graduation, Jack enlisted in the US Army and served in Korea, just prior to the outbreak of the Korean War. He was a corporal with the Combat Engineers from 1946 to 1948 operating road graders and bulldozers. After leaving the service, Jack enrolled at the University of Illinois where he played football on their freshman team until rupturing his appendix during one of their final games. Earning his freshman numerals at the U of I, he transferred to Northern Illinois University and played football under

KEA moves forward with intent to strike

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – Saying the goal is to allow Kaneland School District 302 to “attract and retain our teachers,” the chief negotiator for the Kaneland Education Association said Friday there is hope a new agreement with the school district can be reached soon.

However, the KEA, which represents teachers in the school district, Thursday “voted overwhelmingly in favor of moving forward with an intent to strike,” according to information posted on its web-

site, keaiea.wordpress.com.

Susan Acksel, the chief negotiator, said Friday those with the KEA “are still very confident we are going to reach an agreement” without a strike. She said the previous contract expired June 30.

Acksel said the sides have been in mediation since September. Although Thursday’s action is the first step in the process of declaring on strike, it would be at least four to six weeks before there would be a strike vote. She said the KEA believes the sides are not far apart.

Luckily for the geese, it would seem our area offers them much of what they’re looking for in overwintering grounds. Sure it still gets cold here, but cold to a goose is not much of a threat. As anyone who ever has worn a goose down coat will tell you, those soft under-feathers are great insulators.

Plus, our area offers two elements essential to geese, both resident and migratory – readily available food and open water. Leftover grain in farm fields is free for the taking, as is the turfgrass in our yards and parks. Combine this abundance with an absence of hunters and unfrozen stretches of river, and you end up with a chilly but otherwise Eden-like setting for both subspecies.

Which, for us, translates into a whole lot of geese.

Waterfowl ecologists are interested in these prevailing trends, and considerable research is being conducted in the Chicago area to try to define just how many of our winter geese are residents, and how many are migratory. Only after these populations are characterized can effective management strategies be implemented.

This winter, researchers from Southern Illinois University will be in St. Charles collecting Canada goose DNA samples as part of a broader study examining goose populations in the greater Chicago metropolitan region. In addition to gathering data on population proportions, the scientists will be observing daily movements, food types and roost characteristics, and how weather influences these factors.

Pretty neat, huh?

“We feel our last proposal we have is fair and can meet the needs of the district and the KEA,” Leden added.

Kaneland’s school board meets Monday at Kaneland Harter Middle School, which is at 1601 Esker Drive in Sugar Grove. The meeting starts at 6 p.m., which is an hour earlier than the board’s meetings typically begin. An executive session will be near the beginning of the meeting, and the agenda indicates the board will reconvene in open session at 7 p.m.

The agenda also lists a second executive session in which the same issue is to be discussed, as well as two other issues, including student disciplinary cases and “appointment, employment, compensation, discipline, performance or dismissal of specific employees.”

The first executive session indicates action is not anticipated as a result of the executive session. The one at the

end of the meeting indicates there would be possible action as a result of the executive session. Leden on Friday said he would not want to provide many additional details about executive session items, including which item might see possible action as a result of the session.

The KEA has planned a public forum at 7 p.m. Thursday in the cafeteria of Harter Middle School. Acksel said the KEA would provide more details and information and would answer questions from those who attend. Leden said the district likely would have a representative at the forum.

Leden said the district had no immediate plans to stage its own forum.

Acksel noted the KEA is hoping to improve on teacher retention numbers. She said information shows onethird of the teachers are not tenured, meaning they have been with the district for less than five years. She said the one-third figure is the highest it has been in Kaneland in recent years. In addition to that, she said some teachers had accepted positions at Kaneland, only to resign and instead go to a different position in another district. She said the

Leden said the district’s latest offer is “something that’s within our means.” He added there is not a district goal for the retention of teachers, saying “you can’t control that number.” He said there are several reasons a teacher might not stay at a district for at least five years. He said compensation is one of them, “but it’s not the only factor.”

The superintendent said about 200 hours of negotiations had taken place, and the district hoped to resolve the issue with the smallest impact possible on students. He added “we do value all of our teachers” and said district officials “have bargained in good faith.”

“We look forward to settling this as soon as possible,” Leden said.

As a parody of “The Hunger Games,” the show follows Katskills Wintergreen as she competes in the Humor Games, “a comedy show to the death that the leaders of the

country of Panfire developed to keep their people in line,” according to a news release.

Katskills and the other tributes must use their quick wit, best jokes, and perfect comedic timing to win the games, where the penalty for a bad joke is instant death.

The stage crew has a set planned that emulates a stand-up comedy club. The crew is headed by Sean Tait and Todd Mielcarz, and the play is directed by Jen Pauley.

Police: Stolen Jeep damaged mailboxes in Campton Hills

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com CAMPTON HILLS – A Jeep stolen from a Campton Hills residence was used to damage mailboxes before it was left near a jogging path, according to village police reports.

Reports indicate police were dispatched Oct. 4 to the suspicious vehicle, which was behind homes in the 40W200 block of William Cullen Bryant Street in the Fox Mill subdivision.

Upon arrival, police reportedly found the four-door Jeep Cherokee parked in the grass next to a creek. It was registered to a nearby resident who, when contacted by police, believed the vehicle was in his driveway in the 4N200 block of Booth Tarkington Street, police reported.

The Jeep had been left unlocked with the keys inside, police reported.

Nothing appeared stolen from the vehicle, but the seat was moved forward, indicating a shorter person operated the Jeep, according to reports.

Reports also indicated a small scratch was on the hood, and scrape marks were on the tires.

Three mailboxes were reported damaged the night before in Fox Mill – one in the 3N800 block of John Greenleaf Whittier Place and two in the 3N700 block of Walt Whitman Road. The reports indicated the mailboxes were damaged by the Jeep.

A second vehicle at the Jeep owner’s residence also was left unlocked and had a navigation unit stolen, according to reports.

• David W. Shriver, 50, of the 6N400 block of Route 31, St. Charles, was charged Saturday, Oct. 31, with driving under the influence and improper use of an electronic communications device.

• Lauren P. Piotrawski, 21, of the 1000 block of Kramer Lane, Sandwich, was charged Friday, Oct. 30, with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

• A man reported Friday, Oct. 16, that someone fraudulently withdrew $850 from his bank account at a bank in Chicago. He told police his debit card was still in his possession.

• Michael A. Mays, 45, of the 600 block of White Oak Way, Yorkville, was charged Wednesday, Oct. 14, with improper lane use, driving under the influence and driving with a blood-alcohol content of more than 0.08 percent.

• A burglary was reported Sunday, Nov. 1, at Shore Louie’s Boom! Pizza, 151 Route 38, Elburn.

The side glass door was reportedly shattered by a rock. An iPad, cash register containing $100 and $1,800 from elsewhere in the store were reported stolen.

• Vandalism was reported Thursday, Aug. 27, at a park pavilion near Third and North streets in Elburn. Two benches of two picnic tables were damaged, possibly by teens.

• Vandalism was reported Monday, Sept. 21, at the excavation site of a new subdivision, Norton Lake, which is off Route 64 east of Fox Mill in Campton Hills. Someone reportedly removed the gas caps from five excavating machines, which allowed rain to enter the gas tanks. It wasn’t yet known if the engines sustained damage, but the cost to drain and refill the tanks was estimated at $1,000. Another piece of machinery was reportedly covered in pink spray paint, causing an estimated $2,000 in damage.

Recognizing Veterans Day Wednesday, Nov. 11 is Veterans Day. And many Kane County groups have been anticipating the national holiday, which has the purpose of honoring “America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good,” according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

In St. Charles, the St. Charles Arts Council, American Legion Post 342, AMVETS Post 503, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5036, People for the Arts/East High School and St. Charles School District 303 are involved in the inaugural Celebrating Veterans Through Art event, which runs today through Nov. 14 and includes concerts, art projects and videotaped interviews with veterans.

In Aurora, Marmion Academy will host its annual Veterans Day Observance Ceremony at 3:30 p.m.

Friday, where the Marmion JROTC Cadet Corps will honor all veterans during an after-school formation and parade that the public is welcome to attend.

Rowing club connecting with area students The Saint Charles Rowing Club is on a mission to raise funds for a dock and other items, as highlighted in a story by Kane County Chronicle reporter Ashley Sloboda this week.

Drawing high school students from around the region, the club “was founded in 2012 to offer an alternative to high-impact and traditional ball sports; engage teenage athletes who have not yet found an opportunity to compete at an elite level; and engage in the truest form of teamwork and competition,” according to www.saintcharlesrowing.com.

The club seems to be having a positive impact on students, many of whom have earned scholarships to colleges. Those affiliated with the group also recently shared stories with the Chronicle about students finding a passion for rowing, whereas they might not have felt so strongly about more traditional sports.

Disney’s warming to idea of streaming video

By DREW HARWELL The Washington Post Disney chief executive Bob Iger, whose global media empire includes TV giants ABC and ESPN, has plenty of reasons to defend traditional television in an age when viewers continue to trim or get rid of their cable bill.

But on Thursday, Iger instead explained why viewers keep running from the way TV has always been watched – and why the world’s largest entertainment giant is seeing more promise in streaming video directly to viewers on the Web. Viewers today “don’t just want to sit in a living room on a couch and watch our product on a fixed screen on the wall with a remote control in their hand,” Iger told analysts Thursday on a conference call.

“They want to do it in many more ways, and they have the authority, thanks to technology, to make those decisions.”

Batavia scores early, rides momentum to quarterfinals

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com CHICAGO – It wasn’t the smoothest football game Batavia coach Dennis Piron can say he has coached, but the only thing that mattered was the final result.

Batavia scored on its first play from scrimmage and jumped out to an early lead as quarterback Kyle Niemiec contributed five total touchdowns to lead the Bulldogs past Simeon, 35-14, Friday night in the Class 7A second-round playoff game at Gately Stadium.

The win vaulted Batavia (10-1) into next week’s quarterfinals against the winner of today’s game between CaryGrove and Benet. It also improved Piron’s road record to 26-0 since taking the reins of the program in 2011.

Up next: Batavia plays either Cary-Grove or Benet Academy in the quarterfinals, TBA Three of Niemiec’s passes – and he’d like to say it should have been four – found tight end Glenn Albanese for touchdowns. Niemiec found his top target, Canaan Coffey, for a 68-yard score on the first play from scrimmage.

“To start off a game like this in that way was huge,” Niemiec said. “It’s something that grabs the momentum right away and you could see that helped us do our thing right from the get-go. Simeon is a great football team and made things tough for us, but

we’re happy to get to win and move on.”

Albanese entered the game with four touchdowns this season, and could have equaled that total on a pass from Niemiec on a 4th-and-1 that looked to be caught, but was ruled incomplete.

Niemiec, who passed for 208 yards and rushed for 83 more, also found the end zone with his legs on a 30-yard run down the sideline midway through the fourth quarter.

He was without Coffey – who Piron said got “dinged up” – for the second half. Piron said he thought Coffey would be ready to play next week.

“He’s a special player, isn’t he?” Piron said of Niemiec. “(Simeon) did a lot of nice things, are very fast and strong up front, but Kyle was able to make some plays. He’s especial kind of kid. With that

“Kyle is a great quarterback,” Albanese added. “He does so many things that help you win games. But one big thing is the amount of preparation our coaches put in.

It’s almost hard to lose these games when they prepare us like they do.”

The defense was led by defensive backs Tyler Holl and Brett Bowman, who each intercepted Simeon senior quarterback Dakota Turner.

But the offense shined for most of the night as Albanese finished with just three catches, all for scores, while Coffey still managed to pull in four catches for 100 yards and that opening score, despite only playing one half.

Simeon (7-3) got a big game from wide receiver Malik Holcomb, who hauled in nine receptions for 127 yards and one of the two Simeon touchdowns on the night.

But, in a game that featured 22 penalties, and a few more that ended up being declined, plus an elongated stop of play for an injured Simeon player, there was one bottom line the Bulldogs cared about.

Piron joked that he hopes Batavia’s white away jerseys that continued to remain unbeaten could be “hung up for a few weeks” with the hopes that the Bulldogs can set up shop at home for the next two weeks.

The 2013 Class 6A state champs need wins in the quarterfinals and a potential state semifinal to return to the scene of their title, Huskie Stadium in DeKalb.

The stuff of a boisterous and well-traveled Geneva cheering section won’t be needed until next season. The host Boilermakers handed Vikings players an early equipment pick-up, too, with a 41-22 victory in the second round of the Class 7A playoffs.

“We didn’t play well. We didn’t play well in a playoff game, and this is what happens,” Vikings senior quarterback Sean Chambers said.

“I don’t know if we came out with the right attitude. They definitely did, and you could see it in the score tonight.”

“I know. I was reading all about him,” Vikings senior running back Justin Taormina said. “I heard he’s a track star, and he proved it today. I mean, props to him. He had a (heck) of a game.”

The Vikings (9-2) were bidding for their second successive Class 7A quarterfinal berth, but the Boilermakers, who face the winner of today’s Niles North-Eisenhower game next week, foiled those plans seemingly from the start.

Geneva players and fans literally saw red on the way to the stadium – that’s the color of the street signs in

this Kankakee County town.

Still, the figure of speech came true when Vikings senior defensive back Donny Friedel fumbled the opening kickoff and the Boilermakers’ Jacob Wakeley recovered, giving Bradley-Bourbonnais great field position at the Vikings’ 30.

Although the Vikings limited the Boilermakers to a 42yard field goal – including a key pass deflection from Friedel on a fade toward the end zone – the hosts scored the all-important first blow.

Geneva drew to within 10-7 early in the second quarter, as Chambers scored on an 8-yard keeper before Brendan Hines’ extra point. Its next two drives, however, resulted in turnovers – one on downs and another on a sliding Karsten Aurella interception on a short pass intended for Taormina that the Boilermakers tipped.

ley-Bourbonnais erupted for a 52-yard passing touchdown from quarterback Owen Starr to Harrell. Harrell caught the ball in on the left side around the 10-yard line, then traveled the final distance to the end zone with a defender hanging from his back, feverishly trying to haul the 5-foot-10, 175-pounder to the ground.

“We found him. That’s one thing we did,” Vikings coach Rob Wicinski said. “We can’t say we didn’t find him.

“Power to them. It’s the basics.”

Taormina ignited the sideline and the Geneva crowd when he turned a screen pass from Chambers into a 55-yard touchdown. Trouble was, the score and Brendan Hines’ point-after simply trimmed the Boilermakers’ lead to 3814. Bradley-Bourbonnais, which sacked Chambers four times, led, 24-7, at halftime, when Geneva already had been flagged for seven penal-

ties.

The Vikings’ seniors were their predominant playmakers Friday. As Taormina worked to come untracked – he added an 18-yard touchdown reception from Chambers to cap the scoring – classmate Jack Wassel contributed 10 receptions for 82 yards after missing four games due to team disciplinary reasons.

Wassel lateraled the ball to burly senior lineman Loudon Vollbrecht on the game’s final play, which saw Vollbrecht lumber upfield for nine yards. He favored his knee and received attention from the Geneva training staff, but walked off the field under his own power.

“It was just a great year,” Taormina said. “I thank all the coaches, I thank all the players, I thank the fans, I thank the Geneva community for just a great year. And just following us. It was an awesome ride.”

Marmion’s Burroughs happily catches bug Team hails dedication

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com Andrew Burroughs’ Marmion boys cross country teammates and coaches rave about his surging confidence this season.

Surely, they’ve caught a glimpse of the self-deprecation that accompanies it.

Burroughs, a senior from Elburn, gave way to reflection this week as he prepares for today’s Class 3A state meet at Peoria’s Detweiller Park. That naturally led him to his humble cross country beginnings, those not-so-salad days as a sixth-grader at Kaneland Harter Middle School.

“Actually,” Burroughs smiled, “I was one of the worst kids on my team.”

The intervening six years have treated Burroughs far better. Part of Marmion’s postseason roster in each of his high school seasons, he finished third in 16:19 at the St. Charles North Regional at LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve and covered the soggy Stuart Sports Complex course in a ninth-place 15:40 at last week’s West Aurora Sectional.

“He’s really come a long way since freshman year,” Cadets assistant Nate Colwell said. “He ran phenomenal again for us (Saturday), and he’s in the right state of mind.

He’s going to be in the right spot for us … in Peoria, hopefully.”

Burroughs qualified as an individual for the 2014 state meet, joining teammate and eventual Kane County Chronicle Runner of the Year Brady Bobbitt.

Burroughs placed 98th in 15:24, nestled in the top half of a field of 217 athletes. Energized from a diligent summer regimen – including workouts with Marmion’s sister school, Rosary, which also is statebound – Burroughs feels he has extra incentive to shine this time.

their program, but to contribute to what they hope is a solid overall score. Marmion placed fourth at West Aurora and advanced to state as a team after narrowly missing the state cut last fall. It’s the Cadets’ first state berth in 3A. “I love the camaraderie; I love the team,” Burroughs said. “I’ve got a ton of mem-

ories from running, and I’m really glad that I do running.”

Two older brothers preceded Burroughs at Marmion, with one, Joe, competing in cross country. Seeing his brother’s perseverance pushed Andrew Burroughs, who took a hiatus from running in seventh grade before returning to stay the follow-

ing year.

“It helped me,” Andrew Burroughs said. “He wasn’t the best runner, but still, just seeing him do it – practice and do all that – just showed me how it is.”

Kickoff comes an hour after the final race of Burroughs’ prep career.

The Kaneland boys and girls programs advanced as teams in 2A, helping bring Burroughs full-circle with his first running buddies.

“They’re good guys,” Burroughs said.

He was referring to more than skill level.

What a relief: Geneva junior Emma Ehrhardt admitted she couldn’t differentiate between the feeling of sweat and raindrops after the girls sectional race at Stuart Sports Complex.

“Yeah,” she grinned. “It’s all the same, really.”

Ehrhardt and the rest of the state meet field don’t figure to have that problem in Peoria, where the forecast calls for sunny skies and highs in the mid-50s today.

Making matters even more agreeable is the flat course awaiting runners at Detweiller Park.

“Detweiller is flat and a great place to run when conditions are what they’re saying they’re going to be,” East boys coach Chris Bosworth said.

Burroughs finds the state course similar to Stuart Sports Complex.

“Flat and not many declines or inclines,” he said.

Et cetera: The Batavia girls relished a school drumline sendoff before departing for Peoria on Friday morning.

“Just proud of my team,” Bulldogs junior Maia Howorth said. “We’re really running well.” ... Matt Ronzone of Batavia, father of Rosary runners Madison and Megan Ronzone and Marmion runner Michael Ronzone, confirms he did some moving of his own during sectional weekend.

The Batavia Bulldogs Football team just wrapped up a 5th consecutive title and senior Derek Nutley has burst on the scene as one of the top defensive players in the UEC River.

Derek has recently broken the Batavia Football school sack record with 14 sacks this season. He also has another 6 tackles for loss and has hit or hurried QB’s an amazing 28 times.

Brynn Warrick is a junior at South Elgin High School and a big contributor to the Girls Golf team. She qualified for the IHSA State Meet and finished tied for 71st in the state. Brynn has played on the Varsity Girls Golf team since her freshmen year and has improved every year. South Elgin High looks forward to Brynn repeating as a State Qualifier again next school year.

Lexi DeWaard has been one of the key performers for the Burlington Central Volleyball team. She presently has 71 serving aces and 196 service points both of which lead the team. Lexi has also contributed with 26 spike kills, 28 blocks, 146 digs and 616 assists which also leads the team.

Megan Furtney has been a key contributor to the St. Charles North Girls Golf team this fall. Megan finished 5th in the IHSA state golf tournament and also compiled a 37.5 9-hole average and a 73.7 18-hole average.

Will Marshall helped the Kaneland High School Boys Golf team finish the year strong with some great individual scores down the stretch. In the Northern Big 12 Tournament he tied for 6th place with a score of 81. In the IHSA regional he tied for 6th with a score of 78. In the sectional he tied for 6th with a score of 78. At State he placed 4th with scores of 75 & 72.

Everyone was real excited.

Batavia girls basketball coach Kevin Jensen saw his team exit the Class 4A playoffs early last season, in the regional semifinals, and he, along with the Bulldogs returning from that team, want to make up for it. While continuing to help out as an assistant coach for the Batavia football team, Jensen got his first official opportunity to work with the girls this season as practices began Monday. Jensen caught up with Kane County Chronicle sports reporter Chris Casey for the latest edition of the Weekend Chit-chat. Jensen talked of the team’s expectations, leaders and more. Here’s an edited transcript:

Put five periods at Geneva High School together before a 12:25 p.m. dismissal and you’ve got a mad dash to practice at Fox Valley Ice Arena.

Such is life for Chicago Steel forwards Jake Nielsen and Nico Blachman, who balance junior hockey with their final credits before graduation.

“I think it’s great,” Blachman said. “The teachers have been helping, and overall, the students are nice. It’s Jake Nielsen been easy to get around.”

Nielsen and Blachman, both 17, share the double life with five teammates.

A player’s school depends on the location of his billet, or host, family. Zimmer’s host parents requested he return after a blissful cameo during the stretch run of the 201415 season, when the United States Hockey League’s Steel were based in Bensenville.

Nielsen and Blachman live together in the Mill Creek subdivision of Geneva, where many hockey players’ longtime offseason passion is ubiquitous.

“We both like to golf,” Blachman said. “We just don’t have much time.”

Only six games are scheduled on Mondays Nico through ThursBlachman days, however, giving players ample opportunity to assimilate before they’re on move to the rink.

“I didn’t really have a strategy going into it,” Nielsen said. “I had one gym class where some of the football guys just came up to me and started talking to me. So that’s how they became my friends.

And they connected me with a few other people throughout the school.”

Geneva’s student television station, GTV, recently profiled Nielsen, a gesture that ultimately increased his visibility, he said.

Junior hockey athletes throughout North America follow similar patterns each season, uprooting themselves from home in a bid to pursue dreams of an eventual pro career.

Steel coach Dan Muse spent six seasons as an assistant with the Ivy League program before moving on to the USHL in August.

“There’s a lot of guys in the league that I recruited, to be honest with you. Either recruited and they’re going to Yale or guys that I got to know,” Muse said. “The hockey world’s such a small world. It really is. I mean, you can connect the dots pretty quick, whether it’s some kids I coached in camps over the summers, some kids I recruited when I was at college.

Parenting isn’t for sissies.

I’ve been saying it for years now, and wow, I’m really feeling it this week.

Everyone’s well, and there’s nothing particularly outrageous going on (ha! – that I know of), for which I thank my lucky stars, but it’s just been a bit of a marathon, lately.

You know how kids’ bodies go through periods of growing pains, where, quite literally, they grow taller overnight?

You may recall my mention of Noah, sitting at the bottom of the stairs one morning as we talked, a few years ago, when I did a double take and decided his arm looked longer than it had just the night before. Yeah.

And this week it was Holly, who walked past and struck me as taller, somehow. Well, it seems the same thing happens on our kids’ insides, too. Their quest for independence also

TALES FROM THE MOTHERHOOD Jennifer DuBose appears to grow overnight (like one of those magic sponge dinos, it does!). Kind of like when their heads were bigger than their bodies, or vice-versa, and sometimes things didn’t quite hang together coherently.

Teenagers ARE competent, and they ARE capable, in many wonderful ways – just not ALL the ways, and not always all at once, yet. We may see glimpses of them as fully realized adults, as they try different attitudes on for size, but these glimpses can be fleeting. Completely normal and totally typical stuff, for sure, but sometimes these growing pains stink. For kids, too. In spite of our desire to give

them a wide berth, this twosteps-forward, one-step-back dance we do with our children isn’t always seamless – and sometimes we step on each other’s toes. I do my share of the unwitting toe trampling, too, let me tell ya. Mom-of-the-year, here. Ironically, last week I was awarded first place for best columnist from the Northern Illinois Newspaper Association at the organization’s annual awards banquet. (Ha! Ya coulda knocked me down with a feather, shocked as I was!)

When my editor suggested I bring my kids along, I had to tell her I couldn’t. It was a parenting thing. See, before I knew I’d be winning some kind of award, Noah started a new part-time job. He absolutely loves working at Trader Joe’s.

He regaled me with all kinds of cool factoids he’d learned about the company, and his plans for

establishing himself as a valued employee, so when he volunteered his new employer’s protocols for requesting time off, I wasn’t surprised when he agreed that doing so early on wouldn’t be a great game plan.

Meta-communication, and all that. I’d recently had the same discussion with my daughter, where her activities were concerned, so when the awards fell on a night when she had soccer practice and he already was expected to work, their previous commitments had to come first.

Which was fine. Yes, I’m a huge show-up-and-cheer-for-eachother’s-stuff kind of mom, and yeah, I could have pulled the “mom’ card” and made them go, but mixed-message-city, right? (And besides, the event ended up being the perfect chance to socialize with those fun Chronicle gals, so all’s well that ends well.)

Award or not, I didn’t really feel like writing a column this week, banged up as my toes were from tangoing with my kids. I just wasn’t up to being all quippy and fun. I’m still not. I cried when I made the goulash Wednesday night, after debating with so-and-so about such-and-such – although the onions and daylight savings silliness probably didn’t help.

Fortunately, however, the sun set on that wonky day and then rose again, and by Thursday morning we actually shared a few laughs about our mutual missteps. We’re not winning any Mirror Ball dance trophies, over here, just trying to put one foot in front of the other. So far, so good.

‘Flavorful’ chocolate mousse wins high praise Tom’s Cookbook Library Tom Witom “Flavorful” (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt), a new cookbook by food writer and chef Tish Boyle, may have – as its subtitle notes – “150 Irresistible Desserts in All-Time Favorite Flavors.” But it only took a single recipe to mark this as one of the most noteworthy dessert collections of the year. That’s saying a lot about the talented Boyle, co-editor of Dessert Professional Magazine and author of four previous volumes: “The Cake Book,” “The Good Cookie,” “Dinner Desserts” and “Chocolate Passion.”

Boyle’s latest work may represent her finest hour. She covers a lot of flavors, including vanilla, fruit and citrus, coffee, chocolate, cheese and nuts.

A real standout is Two-Tone Milk Chocolate Mousse with Sweet-and-Salty Almonds (recipe below). Try it and don’t

be surprised if it becomes your newest, most favorite chocolate treat.

Two-Tone Milk Chocolate Mousse with Sweet-and-Salty Almonds (Makes 4 servings)

Soft Ganache:

• 3 oz. milk chocolate, finely chopped • 3 oz. bittersweet chocolate, finely chopped • 1 cup heavy cream

Sweet-and-salty Almonds:

• ¼ cup slivered blanched almonds • 2 tsp. light corn syrup • Pinch of coarse salt

Milk Chocolate Mousse:

• 8 oz.. milk chocolate, chopped • 1 ½ cups heavy cream, divided

Sweetened Whipped Cream:

• ½ cup heavy cream • 1 Tbl. confectioners’ sugar • ½ tsp. vanilla extract Make the Ganache: Place both chocolates in a medium bowl and set aside.

Heat the cream in a medium saucepan over medium heat

“It only took a single recipe to mark this as one of the most noteworthy dessert collections of the year,” writes columnist Tom Witom of “Flavorful,” a new cookbook by food writer and chef Tish Boyle. until it just begins to boil.

Pour the hot cream over the chocolate and let it stand for 1 minute to melt the chocolate.

Whisk until well blended and smooth. Pour the ganache into six 8-ounce glasses, dividing it

evenly (just over ¼ cup a glass).

Refrigerate the ganache until firm, about 1 hour.

Make the almonds: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with a silicone baking mat or parchment paper. In a bowl, toss the nuts with the corn syrup and salt until well coated. Spread the nuts on the baking sheet, separating them as much as possible, and bake, stirring once with a spatula during baking, until golden, 6 to 8 minutes. Set aside to cool.

Make the mousse: Place the chocolate and ½ cup of the cream in a large bowl, and set the bowl over a saucepan half full of barely simmering water.

Heat, stirring frequently, until the chocolate is completely melted and the mixture is smooth. Set the bowl aside and let the chocolate cool completely.

In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, whip the remaining 1 cup cream at medium speed until it just holds very soft peaks (don’t over whip, or the

mousse will be greasy).

Scrape about one third of the whipped cream into the bowl of chocolate and, using a rubber spatula, quickly fold the cream into the chocolate until half blended. Scrape the remaining cream into the bowl and fold it in until the mixture is completely blended and without any streaks.

Pour the mousse on top of the ganache in the glasses, dividing it evenly. Refrigerate the mousse for about 1 hour before serving (or up to 8 hours).

Whip the cream and serve: In a bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, whip the cream, confectioners’ sugar and vanilla at high speed until the cream holds medium peaks.

Bad fats still are bad for you Note to readers: This column is an update of one that originally appeared in May 2013.

Dear Dr. K: I’ve read in your column about “good fats” and “bad fats.” I’ve also heard that recent studies challenge which fats are “bad.” Can you shed a little light on this issue?

Dear Reader: I don’t blame you for being confused. One problem with medical studies is that they don’t always agree.

That’s why we often need a lot of them to determine the “truth.”

Let’s start at the beginning. For years, you probably heard that all fats were bad for you and carbohydrates (“carbs”) were good. That was nonsense. We need both fats and carbs in our diet.

We need to eat mainly “good fats,” and to minimize the intake of “bad fats.” Which are which?

For many decades, hundreds of scientific studies have found that eating lots of saturated fats is unhealthy. Saturated fats are found mainly in meat and whole-fat dairy foods.

Now, a recent study that got a lot of coverage in the media claimed to find that saturated fats were not unhealthy, after all. Don’t believe it! What that study showed was that if you reduce saturated fats in your diet (which is supposed to be healthy) but replace the saturated fat with refined carbohydrates, your health won’t benefit. That’s because the refined carbs are as bad for you as the saturated fats, or worse. If you replace saturated fats with good fats, however, your health will benefit.

In the past 25 years, largely from research done by my colleagues here at Harvard, another kind of fat also has been fingered as “bad”: trans fats.

Trans fats are found in margarine, particularly hard stick margarine; commercially baked goods

There is no safe level of trans fats, and you should eat as little of them as possible. To do so, avoid packaged foods where the package label says they contain “partially hydrogenated” oils, and look for the amount of trans fats on the Nutrition Facts panel.

In the U.S., trans fats may soon be a thing of the past. Several cities have banned the use of them in restaurant cooking. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has labeled them as “no longer generally recognized as safe,” and moved to eliminate them from the commercial food supply over the coming years.

Now to the good fats: polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats.

Good fats can help lower LDL (bad) cholesterol and prevent heart disease.

There are two types of polyunsaturated fats: omega-3 fatty acids and omega-6 fatty acids. Omega-3s come mainly from fish, especially fatty fish like salmon and sardines.

But you can also find them in flaxseeds, walnuts and canola oil. Omega-6 fatty acids are present in safflower, soybean, sunflower, walnut and corn oils.

Good sources of monounsaturated fats are olive oil, peanut oil, canola oil, avocados and most nuts.

So, in my opinion, the science continues to show that the good fats – polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats – are good for you, and the bad fats – saturated and trans saturated fats – are bad for you.

all babysitters is to protect the children in their care.

A reliable babysitter is one who has successfully completed the Basic Life Support course offered by the Red Cross, which includes training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

If an emergency arises, the sitter should know to call 911 to obtain immediate assistance.

Next to your telephone you should have a list with this 911 number at the top and your home address so the sitter can give the information without delay.

The list should also have the following numbers: your cell phone number and also

’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace the number where you can be reached (in case your cell phone is not working), a trusted neighbor’s number, a nearby family member’s number (in case you are some distance away), and the numbers for the police and fire departments and the local hospital just in case the 911 number does not go through directly in your area.

Sitters should not watch television while the children are awake unless the parents give their permission and the children are also watching.

Sitters shouldn’t use the telephone for personal calls and should not have visitors.

The house doors should remain locked and should not be opened for strangers.

Sitters should always remain in control.

When in doubt, common sense should be their guide.

Competent babysitters are invaluable and should be compensated in a manner that reflects their worth.

Not at the bridge table – we much prefer to triumph without there having been any danger to our contract. In this deal, for example, how should South play in four hearts after West leads the diamond king?

South starts with nine top tricks: one spade, seven hearts and one diamond. If East has the club ace, there will be no problems, but the bidding strongly suggests West will hold that card, and if so, declarer is in danger of losing one spade and three clubs. If West does have the club ace, unless West leads a club himself, South will need to get two spade tricks ... and without letting East, the danger hand, on lead.

If South wins the first trick, draws trumps, and attacks spades, East will get in with his king and shift to the club queen. The secret is not to take the first trick. Declarer wins trick two with dummy’s diamond ace and discards a spade. He draws trumps, leads his last spade to dummy’s ace, then runs the spade jack, discarding a club if East plays low. When West takes the trick, he is endplayed. A spade return sets up a winner; a diamond lead concedes a ruff-and-sluff; and a club play is away from the ace.

Or, if East covers the spade jack, South ruffs, crosses to dummy with a trump, and runs the spade 10, pitching a club from his hand, for the same endplay.

This deal would defeat many declarers because they would win trick one, then stop to think. Take your time after the dummy appears.
