Tuesday marked my 19th year photographing election night festivities. Every election night is different and has a different tone. There were years early on in my career when I would have to, somehow, get to eight or 10

different campaign parties and headquarter locations.

Some festivities were big, some small. Some candidates were in their homes with their families, and there were some candidates whose parties took over giant

hotel ballrooms.

Tuesday I followed just one race, the race for Kane County sheriff. I started my night with Democrat candidate Willie Mayes Sr., and after not seeing any election results for several hours, I amused myself

with the festive balloons Mayes and his family used to decorate their party room at the Holiday Inn in Aurora.

Geneva History Museum plans Civil War program

WHAT: The Geneva History Museum will present “Recollections from the Civil War.” The event includes guest speaker and Geneva History Museum archival volunteer Steven Dexheimer. Veterans Day tribute set at Cantigny Park

Eagle Brook Country Club sold for more than $9.6M

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Eagle Brook Country Club in Geneva has been sold for more than $9.6 million, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

CNL Lifestyle Properties Inc., a Florida-based real estate investment trust company, sold 46 golf-related properties in about 10 states in June for $320 million. It plans to

sell two remaining golf courses, as well, according to the SEC filing.

Eagle Brook was sold on Sept. 30, township property records show.

Two other Illinois golf courses included in the sale were the Tamarack Golf Club in Naperville and the Ruffled Feathers Golf Club in Lemont.

A spokeswoman for CNL Lifestyle Properties said no one was immediately avail-

able to comment.

CF Eagle Brook Arcis LLC bought the entire portfolio of golf assets, according to SEC filings.

According to township property records, the tax bill is sent to Fortress Investment Group in New York.

Eagle Brook opened in 1992, according to its website.

CNL Lifestyle bought the country club in 2007 for more than $15.8 million, township property records show.

LIFELONG DEVOTION Batavia woman receives 2014 Roscoe Ebey Citizen of the Year Award

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – A Batavia woman on Thursday was honored for her 28-plus years of volunteer work with the Fox Valley-area homeless community.

Carolyn Sprawka received the Roscoe Ebey Citizen of the Year Award at the Kane County Sheriff’s Office in St. Charles Township.

A group of about 30 people, including Ebey family members and sheriff’s office staff, attended the presentation on Thursday.

“Congratulations, Carolyn. You are most deserving of this honor,” Kane County Sheriff Pat Perez said during the event.

Sprawka started as a volunteer more than 28 years ago at Hesed House, a homeless shelter and resource center in Aurora.

She was quickly asked to join its board of directors and in three years became the board’s president.

She held that position for 20 years until recently retiring, said Kay Yotz, the Geneva resident that nominated Sprawka for the Ebey award.

Sprawka was instrumental to some of Hesed House’s expansions and still works as the shift coordinator at Geneva United Methodist Church for both Hesed House and Lazarus House in St. Charles, Yotz said.

“This is a woman that doesn’t know how to say no,” said Yotz, who works with Sprawka at Rempe-Sharpe and Associates in Geneva.

Sprawka admitted her laundry does not always get done in a timely manner, but she finds the time she spends at the shelter to be more significant.

Sprawka wanted to decline the award and the recognition at first, which Perez said is a common reaction among past participants.

She relented and now hopes her journey can influ-

ence others.

“Everyone can do some-

thing,” Sprawka said during the presentation. “I hope people are inspired to look around and see what they could do.”

Perez said people like Sprawka are the very reason why the award was started in 2007.

The award is named after Roscoe Ebey, a World War II veteran murdered in his bedroom.

Kane County Sheriff-elect Don Kramer said during the campaign season that he intends to continue the Ebey award, which Ebey’s son, Richard was pleased to hear about on Thursday.

After 39 years, home improvement project could be nearing an end

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A home improvement project begun 39 years ago may finally come to an end, if embattled property owner Clifford McIlvaine finishes the last items by Dec. 8, according to an agreed order with the city of St. Charles.

McIlvaine signed the agreed order Thursday during an appearance before Kane County Judge David Akemann at the Geneva courthouse.

The three-page agreement requires McIlvaine to remove five commercial vehicles and a trailer with antique engines. A diesel boom truck and a foam equipment trailer must be kept off of the prop-

erty overnight. He also must completely bury a fiberglass tube.

The agreement also states if he completes all these tasks, the city will withdraw its current complaint and McIlvaine can get an occupancy permit.

The city sued McIlvaine in 2010 over the uncompleted project he started in 1975.

Both sides are to appear in court again Dec. 11.

City attorney Phillip Luetkehans said there are no assurances that McIlvaine would complete the project.

And even if he does complete things as detailed in the agreement, the city is expected to follow up with court papers seeking more than $100,000 in fines and attorney fees.

McIlvaine attorney Philip Piscopo said the current agreement clears up ambiguities in past agreed orders between his client and the city.

As to the possibility of fines levied against his client, Piscopo said they would take a “wait-and-see” attitude.

“Right now, the focus is on getting this project completed,” Piscopo said.

For his part, McIlvaine criticized the city for suing him because none of the previous work permits issued by St. Charles had a deadline for completion.

“The city of St. Charles has created a new class of criminal – being slow,” McIlvaine said. “I’m slow. I’ve been slow all my life. I had permits for the work and no time limit.”

The event, called “Walk the Red Carpet for Stephanie,” is in honor of Stephanie Metz Boyer, a St. Charles resident of 40 years who was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer in May. It will be from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at Fox River Harley-Davidson, 131 S. Randall Road, St. Charles.

Attendees will enter the event on a red carpet while they have their photo taken, said Boyer’s sister Renee Alborn. They can then dine on catered food and enjoy a chair massage or mini facial and then later a performance by the group Step 9.

Born: April 12, 1940 Died: Oct. 30, 2014 Michael George Zimmerman, was born in Geneva, IL to Lois and William Zimmerman in 1940. He was the brother of Jack Zimmerman.

The family lived in St. Charles, IL. In high school, he was a track athlete and football player. At Denver University, he played football and studied business. When he finished college, he joined the Air Force Air Police in Chicago, before working for the family business, Zimmerman Ford, full-time. When he was 32, he met Christine, who he later married.

Michael was the father of Skott, Tiffini, Lance, Anthony and Nicole, and the grandfather of eight. He loved the beach, golf, tennis, travel, and was an avid sports fan.

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Chamber of Commerce on Thursday highlighted its successes and looked to the future at its annual membership breakfast.

Chamber members packed the St. Charles County Club to hear about the organization’s growth this year.

A total of 167 new members joined the group between January and October – that’s double the number of new members that joined in 2013, said Kristine Kowalski, Chamber board chairman.

The Chamber has completed more than 50 ribbon-cutting events this year through October, Kowalski said. Current membership stands at 657 members, which is a 20 percent increase over the group’s 2013 membership.

“All in all, 2014 was a very successful year,” Kowalski said.

Kowalski said the Chamber’s 2015 goals include financial strength, a net membership increase of 20 percent and hiring a full-time membership coordinator.

Most times, the interior portion of the front five shares a bond within that bond.

The Vikings surely won’t shy from running the ball against Rockton Hononegah’s 3-3 stack defense in Saturday’s IHSA Class 7A second-round playoff game at Burgess Field.

When they do, left guard Joey Wagner, center John Boenzi and Hood will look outward to towering tackles Ben Baker and Division-I prospect Loudon Vollbrecht, but also to themselves.

“I think we rely on each other, because when we’re pulling, you know, we can’t really get where we’re supposed to be if there isn’t a good push on the opposite side of the line, if they don’t control their man or where they’re supposed to be,” Wagner said. “We definitely rely on each other more, and I think that kind of helps us out, almost. Just because we’re so tight-knit, we can trust that we’re going to get that push so that we can get down the line and trap the man we’re supposed to have.”

Geneva – like Hononegah 9-1 – enters Saturday averaging 198 rushing yards a game, including 5.7 yards a carry.

Success like that only is built on stability, and the Vikings have banked on their share since Week 2.

That’s when Hood returned to his roots in the program. An offensive lineman at the lower levels, Hood played defense as a junior. He spent time on both lines in Geneva’s narrow home win against 6A contender Richards in Week 2, but stayed put at guard after that as the Vikings’ defensive line emerged as a strength.

Hood’s confidence and grasp of offensive line techniques transferred over, as he described a heavy overlap.

“A lot of it does,” Hood said.

And we’re constantly going up against the O-line as D-linemen and vice versa, so we all pretty much know each other on both sides. So it worked.”

About the only quandary related to the move sprouted on the recruiting end. It’s a small sample size, but Hood, an NCAA Division III prospect who also has made overtures to recent Geneva pipeline and D-II program Grand Valley State, appears on tape more often as a defender.

Asked for a preference on a position after high school, Hood, maker of pancake blocks, waffled.

“Probably wherever they want me, honestly,” he said.

“Wherever I can go, I’ll play.”

Hood’s next stop isn’t exactly foremost on his mind as Geneva aims for its first quarterfinal berth since 2008.

Geneva is confident it has the components to make a deep run, and it starts up front. Augmenting the offensive line’s seasoned starters, senior Sean McKenzie rotates through the line. McKenzie impressed in 2013 when he went from swing tackle to starter after an ACL injury to Quinn Einck.

“Just gives us more depth, and that’s always good,” Geneva coach Rob Wicinski said.

The defensive line keyed

a marked turnaround from last season’s struggles on ‘D,’ which has especially delighted Hood, who recorded one tackle before switching to the other side of the ball.

“It’s great to see how we’ve stepped up from last year and are kicking butt,” he said.

Geneva’s offensive line also has been known to take names at various fast food establishments near campus. The group occasionally dines out separately from weekly positional dinners, breaking away for a bite after post-practice meetings.

Left tackle Baker (6-foot-7, 285 pounds) and right tackle Vollbrecht (6-6, 255) arguably stand out most once the group finds a table. But blending in – not so much with the crowd as each other – always has been the goal.

Although similarly stingy – it has allowed 111 points in 10 games – CaryGrove commands much of its attention behind a vaunted triple-option offense that has produced at least 42 points in the past eight games, including a 52-14, first-round rout of Niles North.

“We really want the kids to believe in the fact that we can make a run here,” North Stars coach Rob Pomazak said.

“And although we play a really good team in Cary-Grove, we feel like we have a great opportunity to kind of, as we would say, slay the giant and play the underdog role. We’ve done it all year, and I think a lot of teams haven’t given us a whole lot of respect. And I think when we toe up against somebody, you have to respect the fact that we’re a good football team.”

“That’s their go-to offense, obviously, and if we shut that down, I don’t know what they’re going to turn to,” North junior nose tackle Quinn Calcagno said.

“So I guess we’ll see what happens.”

Thus far, containing the Trojans’ triple option has been easier said than done.

“It’s hard to simulate in practice more than anything,” C-G coach Brad Seaburg said. “Our game speed is hard to simulate and it’s very difficult to, in a week, to try to rep that in practice. We have a hard enough time repping shotgun plays for our guys because our guys are so used to being under center.”

North has not opposed a triple-option offense in Pomazak’s two seasons, but Pomazak finds the North Stars’ recent foes have helped them “grease the wheels” for what they’re about to face.

Whether it has defended a read option or double wing attack down the stretch, North has responded.

Senior defensive lineman Jordan Bergren (13 sacks, 23 tackles for loss) might not have the opportunity to rush the passer given the nature of the triple option, but he and the rest of the

“It’s just kind of assignment football, what coach has been saying,” North Stars junior defensive back Jake Spaniol said. “Everyone’s just got to do their assignments. Go play by play, can’t fall asleep. Can’t fall asleep in the secondary if they’re running that much, because then they’ll put a back out, a tight end out, something like that. So just got to stay awake and do your assignment every single play.”

The buzz in the stands

Best-case scenario for the North Stars Dual-threat quarterback Nathan Didier and his complement of weapons maintains its stretch run momentum. Pomazak called Didier “spot-on” last week, especially in the second half of a 34-22 win at Rolling Meadows. Running back Dom Sidari is cleared to play after nagging, early season back issues sidelined him last week, but sophomore Eric Lins is adept at shouldering a sizable load.. Lins leads the North Stars in rushes (116), yards (521) and touchdowns (eight). At receiver, Blake Kastein has four touchdown receptions, while Kyle Novotney, who opened the season at quarterback, has three.

“One thing that people don’t look at is our ability to distribute the football to a lot of different kids,” Pomazak said. “There’s a few athletes who are game-breakers for us.”

The X-factor Since 2004, C-G is 25-9 in the playoffs, North advanced to a 7A quarterfinal that same season. This is the program’s first postseason trip since.

NIGHT AND DAY North assistant defensive coordinator Rick Magsamen offered a unique spin to the usual fare of preseason team goals.

This week, the North Stars accomplished Magsamen’s objective by contending with the challenges of practicing after daylight savings time, when darkness engulfs the area around 5 p.m. each day.

“It’s really cool. It’s a good team-bonding experience,” Calcagno said. “I mean, practicing in the light all the time, it just kind of gets repetitive. Now it’s changing up a little bit, so we’ve got to kind of stick together.”

The North Stars shifted to their stadium for the latter stages of some workouts this week.

“We talk about doing things at the beginning of the season. Now we’re actually doing them,” North Stars junior defensive back Jake Spaniol said. “It’s really cool. It’s a great time.”

THE MIGHTY QUINNS Three Chronicle-area teams remain in contention entering the second round of the IHSA football playoffs. Two of them feature defensive linemen with the same name.

Sort of.

To be technical, St. Charles North junior nose tackle Quinn Calcagno is the true moniker minder considering the given first name of his relative, St. Francis senior defensive end Quinn Calcagno, is “Pasquale.”

“My dad, every once in awhile, he’ll bring him up,” North’s Calcagno said.

“Through other guys in the program, we’ve heard about his sacks … and stuff like that.”

St. Francis’ Calcagno, the Chicago Catholic Green’s Defensive Player of the Year, has a team-best 8½ sacks and 12½ tackles for loss. He earned six of those sacks during a 29-0 shutout of Hales Franciscan in Week 5. North’s Calcagno has five sacks, tied for second-most on the team.

The Quinn connection – North’s Calcagno believes they’re second cousins, but they’re not “super close” – hasn’t spoken in some time. For that reason, North’s Calcagno is fuzzy on why his kin became “Quinn,” but hazards a guess anyway.

“I mean, it’s such a cool name, so. …”

North’s Calcagno grinned.

Per babynames.com, “Quinn” is of Irish descent and means “descendant of Conn.” Incidentally, Lakes, St. Francis’ second-round opponent, features a senior tight end/guard named Nikko Conn.

Saints can’t clip Redwings in final

The Saints had a pair of game points in the first set of Thursday’s IHSA Class 4A Bartlett Sectional championship match, but East couldn’t close out, and paid the price in a 29-27, 25-16 loss to the Redwings.

Benet (38-1) completed its whitewashing of the Tri-Cities volleyball scene, with Batavia, St. Charles North, Geneva and now East composing Benet’s four postseason victims.

“When we didn’t get that first game, I thought, ‘Oh, boy, what rabbit can I pull out of my hat at this point?’ because that letdown was huge,” East coach Jennie Kull said. “We were down so much (10-3) and then fought back and fought back and got to that point where I felt like we were going to be able to push them to the edge, and then we made those

“She has a really fast arm swing and she knows how to attack the ball,” East middle hitter Alex Mazanke said. “We were fortunate enough to get a couple blocks up on her, and then we just couldn’t close her out all the way. St. Francis is hopeful to welcome one potential outlier back to the lineup this week. Senior running back Steven Fassnacht, sidelined since breaking his ankle during a Week 3 loss to Marmion, practiced last week and politicked for playing time against Grayslake North, but to no avail.

He’s looked even stronger in workouts this week, and would provide a boost to the offense and the team’s intangibles.

Will Purdom (131 carries, 535 yards, four touchdowns) has spelled Fassnacht nicely since mid-September. Fassnacht averaged 7.5 yards on 28 carries and scored five touchdowns before his injury.

“He’s been nonstop rehabbing. That’s just the type of kid he is,” Fitzgerald said. “He’s a competitor. He’s passionate about playing and being on this team.”

The Saints shared the Upstate Eight Conference River title with Geneva and St. Charles North, and also followed those teams’ postseason fate in falling to Benet.

“At the beginning of the season, I can tell you that I didn’t think that we’d be competing at this level,” Kull said. “They’re here right now and doing this against a Benet team, and we’re pushing them to the limits. I think they all achieved greater than we could have ever expected.”

Mazanke expressed pride in East’s final performance.

“Couldn’t ask for anything better,” Mazanke said. “It was a great game to go out on.”

“Trying to play great defense and trying to run the ball really well,” Mertens said.

“A combo of defense, running the ball and special teams has kind of been a focus of ours.”

Extra point: Lakes defeated host Grayslake North, 37-14, in the season opener, limiting Indiana-bound Knights running back Titus Booker. Booker missed last week’s playoff game against St. Francis with an injured hamstring.

VERNON HILLS – The St. Francis girls volleyball team rolled to its fourth straight sectional title Thursday, sweeping Wauconda, 25-14, 2512, to win the IHSA Class 3A Vernon Hills Sectional title match.

“The girls started the match well, and they ended it well,” Spartans coach Peg Kopec said. “Could not complain at all. Did a great job.”

Two-time defending state champion St. Francis (35-4) advances to play former Suburban Christian Conference rival Marian Central for the Belvidere Supersectional title at 1 p.m. Saturday.

The Spartans defeated the visiting Hurricanes, 25-13, 2522, on Aug. 29 to open the season. Should they earn another victory Saturday, the program would advance to its fourth straight state tournament.

Injury to Sharp means Despite strong start, opportunity for Morin Bulls have concerns

mlazerus@suntimes.com Peter Regin plus David Rundblad does not equal Patrick Sharp. The Blackhawks know this.

So with Sharp out “probably three to four weeks,” according to coach Joel Quenneville, it’s going to fall on everyone to fill the void left by the Hawks’ most prolific shooter, scorer and power-play point man.

“It’s not just going to be one guy that steps up and makes up for a player like Sharpie,” Patrick Kane said. “It’s just not going to happen. Jeremy Morin It’s going to have to a whole group effort.”

Sharp suffered an apparent knee injury Tuesday night in Montreal. It came in the third period on a hit in the corner by Alexei Emelin – just as the long-dormant Patrick Sharp Hawks offense finally was coming to life. The Hawks on Thursday recalled Regin from Rockford, where he was tied for the team lead in points with four goals and six assists. Brandon Saad moved up from the fourth line to the second line, taking Sharp’s spot on the left wing alongside Andrew Shaw and Marian Hossa. Meanwhile, Brad Richards moves up to Sharp’s spot on the first power-play unit, and Rundblad and Michal Rozsival will rotate in Richards’ spot on the second unit.

That’s the ripple effect created by losing a player of Sharp’s caliber and versatility.

“It’s going to be hard,” Hossa said.

“But on the other hand, somebody else has a chance to step in. Some-

body else is going to have more ice time. I’m sure there are lots of hungry guys to fill that spot.”

Count Regin among those hungry guys. After playing 17 regular-season games and five playoff games with the Hawks last season after a trade from the New York Islanders in January, Regin was ecstatic to re-sign over the summer. But he didn’t make the team out of training camp, cleared waivers and was sent to Rockford.

“It was a tough couple of days,” Regin said. “It wasn’t what I expected. … But after the first couple of days I kind of got over the disappointment and started thinking what I could do to get myself back.”

With 10 points in 11 games, including two overtime goals – he had one Tuesday – Regin caught the Hawks’ attention. Quenneville said “six or seven guys” were under consideration to be called up in the wake of Sharp’s injury, but Regin provides experience (239 games with the Hawks, Islanders and Ottawa Senators), familiarity with the team and versatility, as he can play all three forward positions.

Regin will play on the fourth line with Richards and Jeremy Morin, but hopes his hot start will translate to the NHL. “Obviously, it’s a different level, and you can’t do all the same things,” he said. “I’m not going to get the same amount of ice time. I probably played close to 20 minutes down there with a lot of PP and stuff – I don’t expect that tomorrow [against Washington]. But it’s nice to see the puck go in a couple of times, and make some passes. And I think mentally that gives you some confidence that you can make plays, even if this is a higher level, I feel confident right now that I can help this team out.”

He’d better be. Along with everyone else in the room.

“We’ve been dodging bullets,” coach Tom Thibodeau said after the latest Bulls win Wednesday.

Thibodeau was talking about his squad again losing the rebound battle, this time to Milwaukee. However, he could have been talking about any number of concerns with this team.

“We haven’t even done it yet,” guard Derrick Rose said, when asked about him and his teammates clicking on all cylinders. “We’ve had games where we’ve played really good basketball, but defensively we haven’t done it.

“Offensively, we’re fine, we’re scoring a lot of points, but we know this year it’s all about defense, and that will hopefully get us to a championship.”

Nitpicking?

Maybe, especially since the good this team has shown five games into the season has far outweighed the bad.

Joakim Noah playing on one good knee and then battling flu-like symptoms, the daily Rose drama, losing the rebounding battle in four straight games … yet, they will go into Philadelphia today moving closer to full strength, as well as once again playing a very winnable game.

“Oh yeah, we just really learned from that Cleveland [loss],” forward Taj Gibson said. “We just learned from it.”

That learning starts in the middle, as the returning core of Bulls players are starting to figure out how valuable the addition of Pau Gasol just might be.

“We practice hard, we challenge each other in practice, and I just feel like he’s really in a groove right now, he’s back to his old tricks, he’s motivated,” Gibson said of Gasol, and his

practice battles with the two-time NBA champion. “That’s good for us. It’s a real good thing when you can just throw the ball down low and know you’re going to get something out of it, either a foul or a good shot to the basket.”

In other words, the antithesis of the Carlos Boozer Era. Not only is Gasol, along with Mike Dunleavy, one of only two starters to answer the bell for every game, but was averaging 18.8 points – second to Jimmy Butler’s 19.7 points a game – led the team with 10.6 rebounds a game, and has 2.6 blocks a contest.

And while it’s taken a bit of time to accept the Thibodeau way, at 34 years old, he’s been as good as advertised.

“For sure, it was re-energizing decision,” Gasol said of life away from the Los Angeles Lakers. “That was one of the main reasons why I made a change, to rejuvenate, to re-energize, to re-motivate myself and be in a position to win.

I want to help a team be a contender for a championship.”

Enough so that Gasol has even understood the heavy workload the last two games with Noah sidelined. Forty-one minutes clocked in on Tuesday, and another 36 Wednesday.

“Forty (minutes a game) is probably excessive on a consistent basis, but from 30-35 (a game) I’m OK with it,” Gasol said. “I think that’s something I actually kind of want myself, to be out there for that long.”

As far as the 4-1 record, Gasol is obviously thrilled with it, but it comes with a warning.

“This league isn’t about five games, 10 games or 20 games,” Gasol said. “You have to do it consistently throughout a season. And not just when you feel great but when you’re banged up. It’s always good to start off well, but now you have to build on it and keep getting better.”

A significant family milestone this week: The highly rambunctious twin girl grandchildren started pre-school.

Forgive a grandma’s pride as I end with precious stories about children and Jesus.

When my Grandpa Steve passed away, we took the twin’s mother, our daughter, to the funeral home.

We had told her that he had gone to be with Jesus.

Our wonderful friend, Jane Norris, approached us, saying Christina was making the rounds of opening drawers and cabinets.

When she gently asked what she

was looking for, the reply came: “I’m looking for Jesus!”

Now her own children, Leia and Olivia, went shopping with their dad, Danny.

At the store, he pointed to a picture and asked: “Who is that?”

They each replied “Jesus.”

Olivia asked why He was on a cross. Danny answered: “He died for our sins.”

Olivia: “That’s nice.”

As Mark Mitsui, deputy assistant secretary for community colleges for the U.S. Department of Education, sees it, the answer to that question has changed substantially in recent years – and community colleges have played a large role in that transition, serving as an educational launch pad for the hopes and dreams of many students who are parents, likely have work off campus, may be veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces or may even be the first in their family to ever attend college.

Recently, Mitsui visited Waubonsee Community College to meet with the college’s students, faculty and administrators to hear their stories, learn of their triumphs and challenges and take that information back to Washington, D.C. During his visit, Mitsui conducted a one-hour Q-and-A session in a lecture hall packed with dozens of Waubonsee students.

Mitsui, who most recently served as president of North Seattle Community College in Seattle, Washington, said in the approximately one year he has served in his current role in the Office of Career, Technical and Adult Education, he has met with delegations from multiple foreign governments who wish to replicate the U.S.’s community college system in their countries.

“Community colleges produce the people who help to make this country run,” Mitsui said in a release from WCC. Mitsui fielded a range of questions, including those on such topics as college affordability, maintaining state funding for community colleges and how to maximize a

Mitsui noted changes to financial assistance rules, essentially capping interest rates on student loans and creating more flexibility for those repaying loans.

And Mitsui, together with Waubonsee President Dr. Christine Sobek, encouraged students to take advantage of the benefits Waubonsee and other community colleges offer, which include strong connections to local employers and other key resources.

“No matter what industry you want to go into, your instructors probably have those connections to the people in your industry, who already do what you want to do,” Mitsui said. “Get to know them. Take advantage of that while you are here.”

Phytonutrients can add color to a healthful diet Dear Doctor K: You’ve mentioned phytonutrients in a few recent columns. What are they?

And what can they do for our health?

Dear Reader: Let’s begin by breaking “phytonutrients” into its two parts. First, “nutrients.”

These are chemicals in our environment that we need to get inside our body, usually through eating foods that contain them.

Nutrients are a necessary part of our body chemistry. Indeed, many are necessary for the life of most living things. Nutrients include carbohydrates, proteins and fats. They also include metals – such as iron, copper, iodine and zinc – and vitamins. I’d call oxygen and water nutrients, too.

Now to “phyto.” The word comes from the Greek word for “plant.” And that’s primarily where you can find phytonutrients – in plant foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, dried beans and nuts. These natural compounds give plants their color, flavor, smell and texture.

Phytonutrients are powerful and healthy substances to include in your diet. There is growing evidence that they play a crucial role in helping to maintain human health and prevent a number of diseases, such as macular degeneration and some cancers.

Some of the more well-known phytonutrients are isoflavones (in soy); lignans (in flaxseed and whole grains); carotenoids, such as beta-carotene (in carrots and dark, leafy greens), lutein and lycopene (in brightly colored fruits and vegetables); and flavonoids (in red-blue tinted fruits).

On my website, AskDoctorK. com, I’ve put a table listing additional types of phytonutrients, foods you can find them in and their health benefits.

Choosing colorful foods (M&Ms don’t count) helps ensure that you get as many phytonutrients as possible. Typically, the deeper the color, the more phytonutrients present in the food. Notable exceptions are cauliflower, garlic and onions, and whole grains, which contain plenty of these healthful substances.

The growing interest in phytonutrients has created a vast supply of supplements lining store shelves. But in general, a pill can’t do what diet can. Getting your phytonutrients from plant-

based foods ensures that you’ll get a variety of nutrients that work well together. For example, a single serving of vegetables may provide more than 100 different phytonutrients. The crucial interaction of these phytonutrients is generally lost when you’re getting only one or two substances in a pill.

To maximize your intake of phytonutrients: • Eat phytonutrient-rich foods frequently throughout the day.

This helps keep blood levels of these components constant and ultimately more effective.

• Eat at least five to nine servings a day of fruits and vegetables.

• Create a meal around vegetables and fruits. Fill half your plate with color.

• Savor the skins of the fruits and vegetables you eat, assuming you like the taste. The skins often are rich in phytonutrients.

• Regularly include a wide array of whole grains in your diet.

• Cook your vegetables if that’s how you prefer to eat them. Most phytonutrients are heat-stable.

Dr. Wallace: Is it possible to love two guys at the same time? I honestly can’t choose between a boy who attends my school and a boy who goes to my church. I’m dating both guys and if I had to pick one over the other, I couldn’t do it. – Susan, San Jose, California Dear Susan: When you’re a teenager, “being in love with two people at once is not only possible, it’s healthy.” So says New York psychotherapist Judy Freedman, one of a number of deep thinkers on this topic I consulted so I could give you a considered answer. Turns out you’re on good footing with all of them.

Carol Botwin, author of “Love Lives: Why Women Behave the Way They Do in Relationships,” says that being open to more than one person at a time is part of learning what living and loving are all about.

When a teen dates two people at the same time, she adds, she is allowing herself to experiment and grow, and that, of course, is all to the good.

Dr. Pearl Goodman, a psychologist, says that one of the tasks of the teen years is to experience feelings of love outside the family, and it’s not surprising that teens often fall in love with two people at one time. And author Mary Kellogg feels it is quite normal for teens to be attracted to more than one person at a time, confessing that she found herself in love with two very different boys at one point during high school.

So I can tell you on good authority, Susan, that being in love with two people at the same time, at your age, is not

Dr. Wallace: What’s better for college acceptance, very high grades and no extra activities, or good grades and participation in many high school activities? My parents and I disagree.

Susan, Ames, Iowa Dear Susan: Somehow I think you favor the extracurricular plan for college entrance. But it is possible to earn the highest grades and to also participate in an activity program.

A study by the University of Michigan of more than 700 high school valedictorians found that 87 percent of these extremely academically gifted students took part in at least one extracurricular activity and 76 percent were involved in two or more.

Colleges and universities, including Harvard, Yale and Stanford, look favorably on students who participated in a variety of school activities while still maintaining good grades. Such participation demonstrates a well-rounded student.

Since you are in the 10th grade, you still have time to earn top grades and still be a well-rounded student.

Do your best to achieve that goal. That way, your parents and you will all be extremely happy!

Dear Abby: My husband and I have been married for eight years.

We have no children of our own, but he has an 18-year-old daughter from a previous relationship who has been coming over every other weekend and holidays since she was 10. Even though she lives with her mother, she has a dedicated room that’s packed to the gills with her clothes, games, toys, etc.

A bridge deal is full of possibilities, some fact (what actually happened) and some fiction (what might have happened). This deal is a good example. It could be played in a duplicate, and each table would have a different auction or card-play sequence.

First, after North passes, should East open three clubs?

This would normally promise a seven-card suit, but as there is no weak two in clubs, many pairs would start with three clubs, even in second position (where one tends to be the most conservative), because the suit is so strong.

When this board was originally played, East passed, South opened one diamond, and West produced a two-spade weak jump overcall, not caring that he held four hearts. North made an aggressive raise to three diamonds Now South should have shut his eyes and bid three no-trump.

Yes, that contract can be defeated if West leads a club, but why should he?

However, South tried for game with four diamonds and North passed, of course.

West chose the interesting lead of his singleton trump (instead of the spade king). What should South have done?

Declarer started with nine top tricks: one spade, three hearts and five diamonds. So he immediately conceded a club to arrange a club ruff in his shorter trump hand for a sixth diamond trick. As the cards lay, he could not gain two ruffs for 11 tricks. If you are curious, try it.
