I

n the final minutes of Kaneland’s playoff victory over Belvidere North, players and coaches on the Kaneland sideline all were holding their proverbial breath. Drew Franklin was about to kick what would be the game-winning field goal for Kaneland.

The kick was good, and the players and coaches went

crazy. As a photographer who has been in this situation many times – with close games on the football field, basketball court or volleyball court – I tend to hold my breath a little bit, too. I have to watch what the players are doing, and, at the same time, predict what the sideline or bench will do, depending on the outcome.

On Friday, the Knights made that field goal and held Belvidere North to win the game. I knew the players would rush the field, so I did my best to get in a good position to capture the best possible moment.

In the mix of the chaos in the seconds after the clock ticked down to zero, I noticed Kaneland senior Steven Van Horn

St. Charles chosen for IMEA solar project KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – The Illinois Municipal Electric Agency plans to build its first utility-scale solar project within St. Charles, according to a city news release.

The release indicates the ground-mounted solar panel array and energy storage system – which will cover about four acres – are planned for a city-owned lot in the Legacy Business Center on South

Kirk Road and Legacy Boulevard.

It is expected to produce enough electricity to power 75 homes and has an estimated useful life of 20 years, according to the release.

The St. Charles City Council on Monday approved a siting agreement with IMEA, essentially clearing the way for the project, the release stated.

It noted the city won’t incur any ownership, maintenance or construction costs.

“St. Charles is very pleased

to be chosen through a competitive process as host of this new, environmentally responsible power generation facility,” Mayor Ray Rogina stated in the release.

“It fits well within the efforts of our Green Practices and Initiatives program.

I commend the work of the city’s team – led by city Electric Services Manager Tom Bruhl – that spearheaded the location of the facility in St. Charles.”

In the release, IMEA Pres-

ident and CEO Kevin Gaden stated IMEA is excited to bring the project on line in 2016.

“St. Charles is an ideal location for this investment, and the city and its leadership are to be commended for their work in securing this for the city,” he said in the release.

“And while the city will receive the direct output of the carbon-free energy, the project’s benefits will flow to our entire membership.”

According to the release,

the 500-kilowatt project will be built and operated by a consortium of Convergence Energy LLC, Continental Electric Construction Company and Solar Power and Light LLC, with the output sold to IMEA under a long-term power purchase agreement.

The lithium-ion battery energy storage system will provide revenue-generating grid stability services managed by Intelligent Generation LLC, a Chicago-based software company, the release stated.

By Gina Kraman A car shudders upon braking. Another one leaks black, oily fluid while the check-engine light blinks. Other cars’ engines knock, rattle, and smell burnt.

These are problems that Chris Urben solves every day as manager and master mechanic, Geneva Repair Shop, Batavia.

“Sometimes the problem is simple to diagnose and fix. Often it’s complicated, especially when problems occur intermittently -- disappearing before we can detect it, and returning without warning,” Urben says.

He explains how repair shops can plug a diagnostic tool into the car’s data line to learn the “trouble code.” There are more than 800 codes for the engine alone, Urben says.

While some repair shops charge a fee to “pull the code” to diagnose the problem, Geneva Repair performs the service for free, unless the problem requires a significant amount of time to diagnose. Trouble codes

are standardized, which simplifies detection for some car problems.

However, some problems are more challenging to discover, and merit a test drive from the mechanic.

“Customers have used their cell phones to record their car’s problematic noise. However, the recording is often muffled; it’s best to hear the sound directly.

Different problems emit noises at different pitches. Anytime you hear a constant sound you consider ‘terrible,’ or the car is handling poorly, get it checked out immediately to avoid further engine damage,” Urben advises.

After repairing cars for more than 30 years, has Urben been stumped by a problem he can’t diagnose? “Those intermittent problems can be frustrating to solve, as they may just occur at certain speeds under specific conditions. Sometimes we have to make our best guess on what the problem can be, and fix it.

We work with the customer until it’s right, which may take a few tries.”

Mayor: ‘Many, many business owners in St. Charles deserve a tip of the hat’

Participating in sports gave them “instant friends” with each move, Steve Alf said, also crediting football and wrestling for keeping them out of trouble and teaching them skills they now apply to their business.

And so, he said, the dealer-

ship’s sponsorship of the Athlete of the Month program with the Kane County Chronicle is not just a sponsorship or a donation. It’s a way for them to be a part of the community they love, he said.

“This is home to us,” Steve Alf said, noting he lives in St. Charles and his brother lives in Batavia. “We care about this community and the people in the community.”

St. Charles Toyota isn’t alone in its community sup-

port.

Mayor Ray Rogina said businesses in the city not only provide financial support for such activities as parades, special events and fireworks at the St. Charles East-North football games, but they also volunteer time and provide space for The Salvation Army bell ringers during the organization’s annual Red Kettle Campaign.

“Many, many business owners in St. Charles deserve a tip of the hat,” he said.

The city recently recognized one such business, American Powder Coatings on South 38th Avenue, after its president, Dave Suvagia, presented Rogi-

na with a $2,000 donation to the city’s Neighbors in Need utility bill assistance program.

County state’s attorney urges ‘safe’ Thanksgiving celebrations ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon wants people to enjoy themselves this Thanksgiving, but he also wants them to get home safely.

So, for the fourth consecutive year, the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office will

By Carmen R. Heflin According to the Environmental Protection Agency, in 2013, Americans generated about 254 million tons of trash and recycled and composted about 87 million tons of this material. On average, we recycled and composted 1.51 pounds of our individual waste generation of 4.40 pounds per person per day. Trash can be either landfilled, composted or recycled.

If the trash cannot be used it ends up in a landfill which is a carefully designed structure built into or on top of the ground that separates the trash from the area around it.

The purpose of the landfill is to bury it not break down trash.

It contains minimal amounts of oxygen and moisture, which prevents trash from breaking down rapidly. Landfills are carefully filled, monitored and maintained while they are active and for up to 30 years after they are closed.

Some items that you might think are trash can be placed in

a recycling bin to be converted into reusable material. Items that can be recycled include cardboard; paper; food boxes; mail; beverage cans; food cans; glass and plastic jars; jugs; plastic bottles and caps; and glass bottles.

In some cases, the waste can be composted. This is the process of making a pile of wet organic materials, such as leaves and green food waste, and waiting for the materials to break down into humus.

This process can take up to months but after the compost, which is rich in nutrients, can be used for landscaping, horticulture and agriculture.

Next time you have trash, consider where it is going and how long it will be there. If you can recycle or reuse, you are saving the environment and valuable landfill space.

Officers will work the roadside safety check detail at an unspecified location or locations within Kane County, the news release stated.

The officers will watch for motorists who are operating vehicles in an unsafe manner, driving with a suspended or revoked driver’s license, transporting open alcoholic beverages or driving under the influence, according to the release.

The Illinois State Police has zero tolerance for impaired driving, the release stated.

Roadside safety checks are

designed to keep roads safe by taking dangerous DUI offenders off the road, according to the release. Alcohol and drug impairment is a significant factor in nearly 40 percent of all fatal motor vehicle crashes in Illinois, the release stated.

LOCAL BRIEF The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program is taking applications that can lead to help with gas and electric bills for seniors, people with disabilities, families with children ages 5 and younger and anyone disconnected from their utilities.

Appointments are available in Aurora, Elgin and DeKalb on a first-come, first-served basis because of limited funding that has been caused by the state’s budget impasse, a news release from Community Contacts Inc. stated. The energy-assistance program offers a once-yearly benefit for eligible households, including both renters and homeowners. Applicants who do not pay their energy bills directly also may be eligible for assistance, and households do not have to be behind on their bills. A reconnection component is available for those who are disconnected from their energy services. The program will open to the general public Dec. 1.

Woman charged with DUI after crash

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A Wheaton woman was charged with driving under the influence and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident when she rear-ended a stopped car and pushed it into cross traffic at an intersection, according to police reports.

Bonnie J. Coen, 47, of the 1400 block of Groton Lane, Wheaton, also was charged Oct. 26 with illegal transportation of alcohol.

According to a crash report, Coen’s 2003 Buick LeSabre struck the rear of a 2009 Ford Focus while both vehicles were in the 1500 block of East State Street, 10 feet east of Kirk Road at 10:10 p.m. that night.

The Ford was stopped for a red light when Coen’s Buick rear-ended it and pushed the Ford into the intersection of Kirk and East State Street, according to the crash report.

The other driver, a 25-yearold woman from Gilberts, kept driving across the intersection so as not to be hit by cross traffic, according to the crash report.

Coen also continued through the intersection and struck the rear of the Ford a second time, then continued pushing the Ford down the street, according to the crash report.

At one point, Coen tried to drive away, but the Ford’s driver and a witness in a pickup truck both blocked her in until police could arrive, according to the crash report.

The other driver was injured and taken to Delnor Hospital in Geneva, according to the crash report.

Court records show Coen used her driver’s license as bond and is scheduled to appear Nov. 18 at Kane County Branch Court.

GENEVA – Wrinkles and acne scars, watch out. A new business has opened in Geneva – Epic Med Spa, 5 N. Third St., located above Starbucks.

The business does Botox injections, fillers and micro-needling. And it also provides the services of a regular spa, said owner Frank Bennardo.

“It’s a brand new state-ofthe-art facility,” Bennardo said. “We have Botox for taking away wrinkles and filler for different areas of the face – to give fuller cheekbones or smooth out the cheeks.”

Botox injections use forms of the botulinum toxin that temporarily relaxes the facial muscles that cause wrinkles, the Mayo Clinic website, www.mayoclinic.org. stated.

Micro-needling involves a pen-sized device with 25 needles that inject microscopic holes into the face, prompting the body to generate its own collagen to fill in wrinkles, Bennardo said.

The business has been open for about four months and is hosting a ribbon-cutting ceremony and grand opening with tours from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Bennardo said the ribbon-cutting ceremony will be in the upstairs hallway leading to the 900-square-foot spa.

It will offer hors d’oeuvres, coupons for discounts and specials for free procedures.

Bennardo of St. Charles said he also has owned House of Salons at 1 N. River Lane in Geneva for the past 18 years.

Each treatment can range from $50 to $450, he said.

“I am 54 years old, and you name, I do it,” Bennardo said.

“I do the Botox, the Xeomin every four months, religiously. I’ve been doing this for 10 years. My wife does it, too.

We’re not bashful about it.

If anyone asked me, I’m not bashful, I’ll tell them.”

Athough most customers are women, Bennardo said more men are coming in for treatments, as well.

“Women – when it comes to their looks, they will spend it. We’re trying to get men out of the closet – [that] ‘It’s OK to look good if you’re a guy,’ ” Bennardo said. “It’s OK to look 55 if you’re 55. I can make you look 40. … If there is something out there to make me look better – and I can afford it – I do it. I’m not vain. Everybody wants to look good.”

Batavia High School presents ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’

Performances of the play will be held at 7:30 p.m. tonight and Saturday at the Batavia Fine Arts Centre, 1201 Main St., Batavia.

Batavia High School English teacher Joshua Casburn adapted Shakespeare’s original play and is directing the production for the first time, according to a news release.

Batavia High School senior Mikkel Knutson, who plays Puck in the play, said he and other performers will recite Shakespearean verse but speak in their regular Midwestern accents.

“So often Shakespeare’s plays are perceived to be overly-talkative, slow moving and boring, especially when performed by high schools,” Casburn stated in the release.

High school hockey – now and then

Forget the Cubs; hockey is back – and I’m not just talking the Hawks.

Sitting in the stands at Geneva’s Fox Valley Ice Arena, I watch Marmion Academy (where I’m on the faculty) face off against giants looming over the Cadets; with our roster sporting only four upperclassmen, our youngest players can look as diminutive as tee ball hitters.

But man, can they skate and stick handle, scoring in the opening minutes. Thoughts of a rout are dashed, however, when the Brobdingnagians put in two.

“After that second one went in,” Marmion goalie Brett Hengesbaugh will tell me in class the next day, “I said to myself, ‘They’re not getting another one.’”

They don’t. Brett shuts out the offense while we score three, including Jared Weaver’s breakaway goal, flipping the puck over the goalie’s shoulder.

“Hey, Rick,” you’re thinking, “I didn’t know you even knew how to skate.”

My wife, from Glen Ellyn, didn’t either. When first dating, because I grew up in Chicago, she feared I’d fall on my butt when inviting me to skate on Lake Ellyn. Ha! Asking if I know how to skate is like asking Jake Arrieta if he knows how to play catch.

Well, OK, that’s a stretch.

Although, as a boy, back when winters still froze moving water solid, my brothers and I skated up and down Rock Creek.

During my teenage years at Marvelwood, then a small, nascent Connecticut boarding school counting fewer than a hundred students, the only things needed to join the team were skates, stick, gloves and gumption.

Lacking large-donor alumni, the school also lacked an artificial rink; every November we laboriously erected our wood and chicken wire rink, board by board. We shot pucks off plywood until the first snowstorm laid a base thick

Marmion’s game, played on a state-of-the-art rink, rock music blasting, NHL-style scoreboard hovering over logo-painted ice, and stands packed with fans, spurred me to both mourn and celebrate my early hockey days.

Mourn them because my parents, in Chicago, saw none of my games; our rink froze or puddled depending on fickle weather; and those pre-dawn flooding hours dragged slower than cold syrup.

Celebrate them because the sport held more than slipping onto sparkling, Zamboni-smooth ice.

Every ice hillock, dirt patch and exposed stone threatening to trip us we knew better than the rips in our gloves, making our goals, the few scored, that much better earned.

I no longer play hockey. In my 20s, playing in a men’s league, skating backward I caught a crack and fell, hurting something that never fully healed. Aside from after-school pickup games with Marmion students on the campus pond – before it lost out to a parking lot – I gave it up.

I do, however, revisit the old Marvelwood rink every now and then, when memories freeze the past solid, and the imagination turns emotions hard enough to skate on.

Megyn Kelly of Fox News mocks Republicans’ debate demands

By ERIK WEMPLE The Washington Post The front offices of major TV news outfits have been quiet in the face of a draft document from Republican campaigns outlining a number of requests – demands, even – targeted at networks that host Republican presidential debates, following a widely criticized CNBC debate last week.

Among the requests: below 67 degrees on the debate stage; opening and closing statements; no “yes/no” questions without time to elaborate; and preapproval of graphics and bio information to be used on the broadcast.

That last one sounds like a non-starter, considering that TV networks have, you know, editorial prerogatives and the

like. Monday night on her Fox News program, host Megyn Kelly riffed through the requests/demands and couldn’t resist poking fun at them.

“Approval of any on-screen graphics aired during the debate – yeah, that’s gonna happen,” said Kelly, mockingly.

She returned to the outrage later: “Can you imagine having to submit our graphics for approval to the candidates? Good luck with that,” she said to Fox News’ Chris Stirewalt.

“I can’t, and we won’t,” responded Stirewalt.

The draft document stems from a meeting Sunday in Virginia at which many of the campaigns expressed their frustration with the efforts of the Republican

National Committee to negotiate debate terms with the networks.

Though a representative from the campaign of Donald Trump was present at the meeting, his operation announced Monday that he’ll be doing his own negotiating.

Now the networks face the prospect of negotiating separately with the RNC, Trump and a coalition of other campaigns.

What about fan clubs – can’t they have a voice in all this?

Of all media actors commenting on this debate debate, Kelly has the standing to whack away at this absurd Republican debate draft. She co-hosted the excellent Aug. 6 debate in Cleveland, which featured strong and adversarial questioning of the debate participants.

Batavia takes impressive 25-0 road winning streak to Simeon

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Since becoming Batavia’s head football coach in 2011, Dennis Piron has only lost at one venue.

That’s his program’s home field, Bulldog Stadium. Piron has developed quite the winning streak on the road.

Entering tonight’s Class 7A second-round playoff matchup against Simeon at Gately Stadium, Piron is 25-0 away from Batavia, with one of those wins coming in the 2013 state championship game, a 34-14 win over Richards that was played on a neutral field at DeKalb’s Huskie Stadium.

So it shouldn’t come as a surprise the Bulldogs are as confident as ever heading into what they expect to be a hostile environment tonight.

“I think heading into games away from home, this program always has that extra edge,” senior receiver Canaan Coffey said. “We want to win on another team’s field. I think we go into games with the mindset that teams are overlooking us or think because they are at home, they should beat us.

We feel like we have something to prove every time we’re out there, home or away, but our main goal in those hostile environments is to show them what Bulldogs football is all about.”

Overall, Piron is 51-6 at Batavia, and along with the likes of Coffey, linebacker Colin Thurston and quarterback Kyle Niemiec and company, the Bulldogs (9-1) earned the No. 4 seed in the 7A playoffs.

The team’s lone loss this season came at home in a nonconference matchup with Naperville Central. But the idea of Piron not losing a road game as he coaches in his fifth season is quite the feat.

Thurston echoed Coffey’s thought that Batavia has “something to prove” on the field in away games because Piron has instilled the mindset in players that nothing is going to be given to them, especially at this time of the year.

“We know we have to take it from them,” Thurston said.

“They want to defend their field, so we know we have to earn each and every single one of these wins. Even winning that many in a row, we still prepare and put in the same amount of hard work to make sure we’re ready to go.”

What is it about the Batavia

football program that brings out the best in each team under Piron? He really doesn’t have the complete answer.

“There’s not a lot of outside distractions, I think,” Piron said. “It’s a clean operation. …

You get on the bus, you go play the game and you come home.

In the past, we’ve had great success on the road and I’m not exactly sure why. Maybe it’s the matchups or the luck of the draw, but even in the regular season, our teams seem to play better when these bigger games are on the road.”

The players have more of an idea. They are the ones actually executing the game plan that they credit Piron and the coaching staff for spending countless hours coming up with.

“I definitely think it’s overlooked,” Coffey said. “They

don’t get near the credit they deserve for how much time they put in. The long nights and hours they put in, you can see how much they care about this program. Piron loves his job so much and wants to see us succeed.”

In his third season as head coach, Piron brought a state championship back to Batavia, thanks in large part to workhorse running back Anthony Scaccia.

Although Scaccia was one of the leaders of that group – along with then-quarterback Micah Coffey, Canaan Coffey’s older brother – Scaccia knows strong leadership and preparation that Piron’s teams have put in contributes largely to the success, especially away from home.

“I’ve known Kyle (Niemiec)

and Canaan for close to 10 years,” said Scaccia, now a redshirt freshman at Butler. “They are great leaders and have been there before. Having that experience gives them composure to not get flustered in situations where they are in an unknown or tough place.

“Piron is the kind of coach that you just believe in,” Scaccia added. “He has every player believing in the game plans, the schemes and you know you have a good chance to win anywhere you go.”

Having already notched road wins against 8A power Oswego in the season opener, as well as 7A playoff teams Geneva and St. Charles North, Batavia is eager to put on those unblemished white uniforms and try to make it 26 straight wins away from home.

The next test awaits for Geneva, heading to Bradley-Bourbonnais to take on the Boilermakers in the second round of the Class 7A playoffs. Geneva, which last met the Boilermakers in 2007, took care of Oswego East in the first round, thanks in large part to a record-setting game from running back Justin Taormina, while Bradley-Bourbonnais saw fireworks of its own after upsetting Glenbrook North, 60-59, in double overtime on a twopoint conversion attempt.

As these games grow in magnitude, longtime Geneva coach Rob Wicinski doesn’t plan to change what the Vikings are all about.

“We’re going to do what we do best,” Wicinski said. “If you’ve seen us play, you know what we like to do, so we’re going to continue to do it. We’re excited to get down there and have a good time.”

The marquee matchup

Geneva’s offensive line against the Bradley-Bourbonnais defensive line will be something to watch in this one. Wicinski said he has yet to see a

complete performance from his offensive line, yet the team sits at 9-1 on the season. He thinks the unit is close to breaking out, and despite not having played that well in Wicinski’s eyes last week, were able to create enough room for Taormina to run for 282 yards and four touchdowns on a Class 7A playoff record 42 carries.

“I said if the (offensive line) didn’t play well, we’d be in trouble last week, and they didn’t play all that well, but we weren’t in trouble,” Wicinski said. “One of these games, they are going to pop and come alive, so if they do that, we’ll be in pretty good shape.”

Wicinski knows the Bradley-Bourbonnais defense, led by linebackers Mason DeLong and Camren Douglas, flies around and does enough to make things interesting for his group.

The X-factor

Geneva must contain the junior playmaker. In the team’s first round game, Harrell scored six touchdowns, four of which came on the ground. Yes, he lines

up in the wildcat formation and runs the ball, especially near the goal line. All four of his carries in the first-round win went for touchdowns.

Harrell also threw the game-winning two-point conversion pass to end the game. He also is a defensive back, so it will be rare to see him leave the field.

On the season, the 5-foot-11 Harrell has 14 total touchdowns, seven apiece on the ground and receiving. Needless to say, the Vikings would like to keep the ball out of his hands.

Best case-scenario for the Vikings

As Wicinski said, do what you do best.

Sure, quarterback Sean Chambers will need to protect the ball and make a few plays with his arm and feet, but it will be important to get Taormina going again.

He may not need a blockbuster performance this week for Geneva to advance, but will need his fair share of touches.

The Vikings also look to welcome the return of receiver Jack Wassel (387 yards, six touchdowns), who Wicinski said was questionable after missing the past four games due to team disciplinary

reasons.

Best case-scenario for the Boilermakers

Develop a rhythm between Harrell and quarterback Owen Starr early. I think it’s important for Bradley-Bourbonnais to give the Vikings’ defense fits with that connection early and often if it wants to pull off a second straight upset.

Harrell won’t need six touchdowns this week, but he’ll need to have a big game.

Geneva likes to play in chaos, so keeping things simple and getting an early lead would help, as well.

Spartans’ sweep sets up dream matchup

Naperville North took the court with the utmost confidence, despite the fact that the Huskies were playing perennial girls volleyball power St. Francis.

The Huskies had already knocked off a couple top Tri-Cities teams to get to Thursday’s Class 4A East Aurora sectional final, disposing of Geneva in a regional title game last week and then stunning St. Charles North in three sets in a sectional semifinal on Tuesday.

Could they continue their amazing run?

Not with Molly Haggerty (14 kills) and Kamryn Malloy (nine) on the other side of the net. That duo has an extraordinary knack for destroying the faith of even the most confident

The Spartans didn’t cruise, but they never allowed to the Huskies to enjoy much momentum or go on any lengthy runs as they won their fifth straight sectional title, 25-22, 25-21.

St. Francis, the three-time defending Class 3A state champion that climbed to Class 4A this fall, punched its ticket to what’s certain to be a memorable match against Benet at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Class 4A Bolingbrook Supersectional.

The Redwings earned the Class

4A state title last season and have won three of four.

It’s a dream matchup for St. Francis senior and Batavia resident Olivia Sauls.

“The competition in 3A wasn’t nearly as tough as this,” Sauls said. “Every game in 4A has been a new challenge, and Naperville North was no different. They came out and played hard. Every game gets harder and harder and now we get Benet. Ever since I was in grade school, I wanted to play Benet because of the rivalry.

I’m so excited for that.”

St. Francis (36-3) had a difficult time pulling away from the Huskies in the first set, but after a tie at 13, the Spartans gained a 15-13 lead and never looked back. Haggerty sparked the initial run with a pair of kills, but Kamryn Malloy, Cat Wilson and Laney Malloy also came up with big plays before Haggerty finished things off with a kill.

“We saw that they played

insane defense and noticed that they set to the outside a lot,” Haggerty said. “In practice, we were switching me and Kamryn around to adjust to their defense because they got up on every ball, so we rotated and had hard hits to the corner and everything worked out for us.”

Naperville North (28-11) had its biggest run at 4-0 in the second set, but once again the Spartans quickly recovered.

A pair of beautifully placed balls from setter Daniele Messa highlighted a 3-0 run by St. Francis that gave it the lead for good at 17-14.

Laney Malloy added eight kills, Wilson contributed five blocks, while Becca Fernandez had 10 digs and six service points. Messa delivered 30 assists.

Burke paced Rosary’s attack with five kills. Konovodoff had nine digs, while setter Julia Gauthier contributed eight assists.

Fox spoke of “baby steps” for a program that will graduate just one senior, middle hitter Rachel Ping, before next season.

Rosary climbed from a regional semifinal victory in 2013 to a regional title last fall to a 2015 ride that soon will be etched in program annals. The 1978 team, by the way, reached the elite eight, giving next season’s group an early benchmark.

“I honestly think this is the best-bonded Rosary team that I’ve been on,” Gauthier said.

“We all are just so close, and we’re all really good friends. It’s not like we’re just friends at volleyball and not during the day in the school. We’re all talking to each other all the time. We honestly love each other, and we’re a family.”

Royals coach Rachel Fox knew of the Friars’ strengths from last month’s road loss in Girls Catholic Athletic Conference play, and her players did, too. On this night, it simply didn’t help pay dividends.

“It was everybody,” Fox said. “They have great pin hitters, great middle hitters, so it’s hard to defend when you have to be ready for everybody.

They hit to the places we talked about. It’s just our block the first (set) was not lining up with what we practiced and our defense didn’t know where to go.”

Fenwick, conversely, channeled all the right leaps, swings and moves.

“Right now, we don’t even think about it,” Carpenter said.

“When I go up to hit, I’m not thinking about it. I just go, and I know that I’m just going to put everything into it. And there’s no thought process. I just go up

there, and I’m like, ‘You know what? I’m just going to go up there, and I’m going to hit that ball. That’s all I’m going to do, and there’s nothing to it.’ ” Reflection naturally came to the Royals more fluidly after the match, when teammates, coaches, parents and a student section that also featured baritones from brother school Marmion convened on one side of the court.

Fenwick athletes and backers stood on the other side, toting a sectional plaque they will hope to augment at Saturday’s IC Catholic Prep Supersectional.

It was too late to close the gap, but Royals junior outside hitter Erin Burke still had a pulse on what separated the teams as Fenwick grew increasingly comfortable.

“I think once we started realizing all the pressure that was on us, we started getting into our own heads and thinking too much,” Burke said. “Volleyball is a game where you just have to play, use your athleticism, use the instincts you have to give

Military Appreciation promotion gets new spin

GENEVA – Numerous Chicago Steel hockey players and coaches boast family ties to the United States Armed Forces and soldiers from other countries.

Such connections figure to add significance to today’s 7:30 p.m. Military Appreciation Night game against Muskegon (Michigan) at Fox Valley Ice Arena, but there certainly are more threads than those outside the rink.

The Steel are set to wear special jerseys created and manufactured through a partnership with Chicago-based custom apparel company Rags of Honor, which offers employment opportunities to homeless veterans.

“To me, there’s a lot more meaning there than just buying the (camouflage) jerseys or something that’s been done before,” Steel coach Dan Muse said. “I’ve never heard of anybody doing this. I think it’s awesome. I think it’s really cool.”

Fans can bid on the gameworn jerseys – white with a red, white and blue Steel logo – during an in-game silent auction. Proceeds benefit the Illinois Veterans Assistance Fund. All active military and veterans will receive free admission, with their guests admitted at a $3 discount.

Helping students from Africa succeed

By TERRY WARD neighbors@kcchronicle.com Two women from the Fox Valley area are working with the Bridge2Rwanda program to bring highly-motivated high school graduates from Africa to study at universities and colleges in the United States and other countries. The students compete for scholarships in Kigali, the capitol of Rwanda.

St. Charles resident Cheryl McGuirk, a former social worker for Batavia School District 101, and Batavia resident Linda Murphy have been involved in the Bridge2Rwanda program, which was formed in 2007 to help expand Rwanda’s global network of friends by encouraging direct foreign investment and creating opportunities for Rwandan students to study abroad.

as leaders, educators and entrepreneurs to help their countries continue to develop.

As a new student support coordinator for 32 students in the Bridge2Rwanda program, McGuirk went to Rwanda for two weeks, where she met staff,

donors and board members affiliated with the organization.

That included a two-day conference, and – during the trip – McGuirk interviewed students and got to know them, before their arrival at colleges.

A highlight of her trip involved a two-hour trek into the mountains of northern Rwanda to spend an hour with gorillas. There were two silverbacks, two females, several youngsters and one 9-monthold baby – all a family – she said.

“It was an amazing experience being so close to them,” McGuirk said.

When she returned, she spent the summer helping students with their travel arrangements and interviewing host families. Host families provide support for the students, including taking in the students during school vacations and contacting McGuirk as needs arise.

McGuirk communicates regularly by Skype and sup-

ports the students during their four years of college. She offers assistance and counsel for any academic, social, personal or cultural issues.

Once students graduate, they are encouraged to return to Africa to begin their careers.

The first class of Bridge2Rwanda scholars was launched in 2011, stated www.bridge2rwanda.org. In 2014, students from South Sudan, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo joined the fellowship.

Since 2012, nearly 100 students have received four-year scholarships to at least 50 universities in five countries, stated Bridge2Rwanda literature. The colleges and universities have included Harvard, the University of Chicago and Dartmouth.

Bridge2Rwanda creates partnerships with potential employers, including businesses, nonprofit groups, government institutions and global corporations that could be expanding in Africa.

The commercial features an animated version of the dealership mascot, Ferdinand the Fox, playing the role of a news anchor while delivering news about the dealerships.

The commercial was chosen from more than 4,000 entries and was judged by the Academy of Interactive and

Visual Arts, a 700-plus member organization, a news release stated.

“On behalf of the Davey Awards and the Academy we applaud MAN Marketing for their dedication and commitment to perfection,” said Linda Day, executive director of the Davey Awards, in the release.

“We offer our congratulations once again for a job well done.”

MAN Marketing President Ed Mallof was thrilled with the honor, the release stated.

“We are proud to represent the Fox Valley Auto Group and thank them for their continued confidence,” he said in the release. “They give us the freedom to flex our creative muscle.”

The grant award is for a maximum of $500,000. The new program will begin in fall 2016, and will enroll a maximum of 20 students in order to meet the terms of the grant, a news release from Waubonsee stated.

The Dunham Fund Quick Path degree program will allow students to earn an associate degree – traditionally

a two-year degree – in one year. The program will be intensive and will require a full-time commitment on the part of the student.

This innovative program will be unique to the district and region, and will allow students to enter the workforce quickly, or – if they desire – to enroll in a four-year institution and be able to receive a bachelor’s degree in three years, the release stated.

Dr. Wallace: I’m a senior in high school and I’m a very good student with an A-minus average. Neither of my parents went to college, but they are encouraging me to go to Ball State University next year and to follow my dream of becoming an elementary school teacher. I really love children, and I already teach a Sunday school class for primary age children.

I had a job this past summer in a fast-food restaurant. I liked the job and was glad to earn good money for college. My boss said I was a good employee and asked me if I wanted to continue to work a few hours every week while I go to school. Do your boyfriend a big favor by encouraging him to quit drinking. No matter how much he consumes, it’s a waste of money and could lead to big-time trouble.

Dear Dr. K: I’m in my 80s. These days, I’m not very hungry, and I eat a lot less than I used to.

My daughter is worried I’m not getting enough nutrients. Is she right?

Dear Reader: Of course, I don’t know if you are getting enough nutrients, but your daughter is right to be worried about it. For one thing, you say you’re not eating much. People normally start to have a reduced appetite as they get into their 70s and 80s, but it’s not a dramatic change.

When people of any age who have had a good appetite most of their lives suddenly lose their appetite, I worry they are ill. In particular, the combination of poor appetite and losing weight without trying always worries a doctor about cancer. If you’re losing weight, talk to your doctor.

Obviously, not eating much is one way a person doesn’t get enough nutrients. On top of that, getting enough nutrients through diet becomes more challenging as we age. Our bodies don’t absorb nutrients as well as they once did. So it’s important to make the most out of the foods we do eat. One way to do this is by choosing more nutrient-dense foods.

These foods provide more nutrition bang for the calorie buck.

I spoke to Liz Moore, a registered dietitian at Harvard-affiliated Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.

She described nutrient-dense foods as those that contain an abundance of nutrients and other healthful substances, such as vitamins, minerals, fiber, lean protein and unsaturated fats, without having an excess of calories. Nutrient-dense foods contrast with those that have low nutritional value and lots of calories – such as chips or soda.

North used Stayman before putting his partner into three no-trump.

West led a fourth-highest club two.

Declarer started with only three top tricks: one spade and two clubs. (I do not remember another three-no-trump contract with so few instant winners.)

He could establish four diamond tricks, but still needed a couple of heart winners as well. If East had the heart ace, the timing was not that critical, but with West having that ace, South had to be careful.

Declarer, to retain his only guaranteed hand entry, took the first trick with dummy’s king and attacked diamonds. East won the second round and returned a club. South took that trick, cashed his diamonds, discarding two spades and one heart from dummy, then attacked hearts. West could win with his ace and take two club tricks, but declarer had the balance.
