Work expected to begin this month

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – After Batavia city officials and aldermen complained about the condition of the former Siemens factory site at Van Nortwick Avenue and McKee Street, Siemens officials announced cleanup of the site will begin in the next few weeks.

Siemens officials Wednesday sent a letter to residents living near the site explaining that the work will begin.

The letter states the work will include the demolition of asphalt pavement and concrete slabs in the parkways along McKee Street and Van Nortwick Avenue, adjacent to the factory site.

The work is set to begin the week of Nov. 17. No changes will be made to the existing curbs along Van Nortwick, according to the letter.

While roads near the site will remain open during the construction work, there could be occasional lane closures, the letter states. In addition, during some phases of the project, parking will not be

Siemens officials on Wednesday announced that the company soon will begin cleaning up its former factory site in Batavia at 1000 McKee St. allowed on the street.

Siemens’ buildings were demolished in 2009, but the building foundations have not been removed. Batavia Community Development Director Scott Buening has said the foundations were supposed to have been removed by June and replaced with grass.

The city in June filed a complaint against Siemens in Kane County Circuit Court.

After the pavement and concrete slabs in the parkways are removed, the next step will involve removing the foundations and slabs on the property. However, that can’t begin until the results of additional soil borings and any

subsequent environmental remediation is completed.

“We anticipate this will be during the 2015 construction season,” the letter states.

Siemens eventually plans to place topsoil and seed in areas that have been demolished that will require restoration.

“We’ve been trying to work with them on it,” Buening has said. “It is in need of attention.”

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A few riders on Wednesday objected to Metra’s proposed fare increase during a public hearing at the Kane County Government Center in Geneva.

Officials from the Regional Transportation Authority and Metra were at the three-hour hearing, which was one of four held Wednesday to gather public input on their proposed 2015 budgets.

The biggest talking point at the hearing was a proposed 10.8 percent fare increase in Metra’s 2015 budget. If approved by Metra board members on Nov. 14, the fare increase would become effective Feb. 1, 2015.

“I’m opposed to the fare increase,” Attorney Travis Maisel said. “At some point it will get so expensive that people won’t want to ride it.”

The change in fares is being proposed in part to offset the costs of Metra’s long-term mod-

ernization plan, said Demetrios Skoufis of Metra Government Affairs at the hearing. Metra – for the first time in its history – will issue bonds starting at $100 million. The fare increase will help pay down the debt, Skoufis said.

Metra also provided projection for various fare increases in each of the next nine years following 2015. Skoufis said the Nov. 14 vote is only for the 10.8 percent fare increase.

The fare increase projections provided for future years could change for a variety of reasons, such as a change in state or federal funding, Skoufis said. The modernization plan will allow Metra to update some of its locomotives and train cars, some of which date back to the 1950s, he said.

Metra also has to comply with the implementation of positive train control, which he described as a GPS safety system that would override the conductor’s ability to control the train in emergency situations.

GENEVA – Rick Nagel – the county contract employee who has run Kane County Connects for the past six months – addressed some of the criticism it received Wednesday after his monthly update to the Executive Committee.

“If I’m guilty of sin in this endeavor it’s that I’ve tried to run Kane County Connects like a newspaper,” Nagel said.

The initiative – which aims to engage people with county government and provide them with information they can use – has a website, an e-newsletter and a presence on social media. Last month, it briefly featured an opinion page, which ran such election-related opinion pieces as letters for and against a fire district referendum and Sheriff Pat Perez’s endorsement in the sheriff’s race.

Kane County Board member Mike Donahue, R-Geneva, was among those who called such content “inappropriate.”

Police nab motorists for speeding through traffic safety campaign editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – A recent traffic safety campaign in St. Charles netted five citations, one arrest and four warnings, according to a St. Charles Police Department news release.

The three-day enforcement period ended Sunday and was done in cooperation with and funded by the Illinois Department of Transportation. It was part of a statewide program to reduce the number of traffic fatalities.

Other content was challenged in August, when Batavia Township resident Ellen Nottke filed an ethics complaint against County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen and Nagel, alleging the chairman’s political fundraiser was listed in the e-newsletter. Nagel said the decisions of what to run and what not to run are based on the content he thinks will be most valuable to county residents.

“I want to speak very plainly here,” Nagel said. “Chris Lauzen is not the editor of Kane County Connects, and he has not and does not direct its daily content.

“So to anyone who wants to criticize the initiative, I ask only that you direct the criticism toward me. I’m not a soldier falling on my sword here; I’m just an old newspaper guy taking personal responsibility for his actions and decisions.”

Board member Melisa Taylor, who is on the committee but wasn’t at the meeting, said she doesn’t believe Lauzen is not involved.

During that five-year period, 166 people were killed in drunken-driving crashes on Halloween night, and in 2012 19 percent of fatal pedestrian crashes on Halloween involved drunken drivers.

Unofficial results indicated that Kramer, a Republican, received 74,221 votes to Democratic rival Willie Mayes’ 44,477. The race was among several key decisions residents faced on the ballot.

In Batavia School District 101, the resounding defeat of the $15 million referendum – 8,017 no votes to 2,814 yes votes – solidified opponents’ stand against the possibility of increasing their property taxes.

Select voters in the Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District rejected disconnection and transfer to the Fox River and Countryside Fire/ Rescue District, with 1,292 no votes to 443 yes votes, also according to unofficial results.

Tuesday’s wins and losses are paired with a voter turnout of 46.61 percent, which was lower than in previous years, according to the Kane County Clerk’s website.

Kane County Director of Elections Suzanne Fahnestock said there were 227,725 registered voters, and 106,141 ballots were cast, including 26,137 early votes.

In the 2010 mid-term election, there were 260,429 registered voters and 129,050 votes cast for a turnout of 49.55 percent, according to records on the county clerk’s website.

“I really can’t say why,” Fahnestock said. “Because we do our part, for sure.”

Kane County voting numbers lagged, she said, because of new laws extending the grace period to register and vote. She said the county had five such polling locations, and some did not finish until 8:45 p.m. Tuesday.

••• Kramer will begin his first term as sheriff Dec. 1. He credited his win to his campaign team – and learning from his loss to current Sheriff Pat Perez four years ago.

“I did not make the same mistakes,” Kramer said. “I did a good job of connecting with the community and voters by going door-to-door. I had wonderful volunteers who got me great sign locations, went marching in the parades. Every little bit counts, and I did all the right things. When you have a great game plan, the outcome is going to be solid.”

The biggest change in the sheriff’s office will be how service is delivered, Kramer said.

“I am a big proponent of a

leadership model called ‘servant leadership,’ ” Kramer said. “One of the Rotary slogans is ‘service above self.’

It has to float down from the managers. It requires a different culture at the sheriff’s office, not top-down and very authority-driven.”

Kramer said a top-down authority model creates workers who cannot make decisions on their own and are always waiting for their boss to tell them what to do.

“When you’re making lifeand-death decisions, you have to be confident in making the right decisions based on good training,” Kramer said. “You can’t go wrong when you treat people ethically.”

Lisa Farley, a supporter of the referendum, said voters were turned off by what they perceived as a tax increase.

“I thought that the message was not clearly explained,” Farley said.

BLACKBERRY TOWN SHIP – Kaneland-area sports groups plan to work with Blackberry Township to develop some of the land recently bought by the Kane County Forest Preserve District, county officials said.

The forest preserve district paid about $625,000 to buy the 62.67-acre Westlake parcel, also known as the Gum Farm in Blackberry Township, said Jerry Culp, the district’s director of planning and development, on Tuesday. Funds for the purchase came from the Open Space referendum passed in 2011.

The district will own the land but plans to enter into an intergovernmental agreement with Blackberry Township, so its leaders can develop the land with local sports groups. The land purchase is significant for the groups, who do not operate under a park district and have limited space for their practices and games, said Kane County Board member Drew Frasz, R–Elburn, on Tuesday.

Elburn resident John Van Bogaert was the liaison who connected organizations, such as Elburn Baseball and Softball and the Kaneland Youth Football League to Blackberry Township Supervisor Fred Dornback. As a friend of the athletic programs, Bogaert said he is aware of the ongoing struggle to find a dedicated area for the children to play.

“It’s nice to finally have support from the county ... to have a foundation for the future to make this happen,” Bogaert said Tuesday.

Frasz said the sports groups would develop only a portion of the land for future use. The groups likely would use the area of the Westlake parcel directly south of McNair Field, which they currently use, he said.

The district will maintain the land as open space and restore other portions of it to prairie or woodlands in the future, Culp said. There is no firm timeline yet for other development plans as the land still is in use by a farmer who is under contract for a couple more years, he said.

He reportedly described himself as a disc jockey in the electronic music industry and a professional makeup artist who had several jobs recently, which is why he had a large amount of cash on him. Police reported that the officer did not locate any money, and Padilla claimed the security guards must have taken it.

Padilla denied that the nylon pouch and its contents were his and provided several theories as to why the drugs couldn’t be his, police reported. He was taken to the DuPage County Jail after an assistant state’s attorney authorized the felony charges, according to the report.

His next court date is Nov. 18.

ST. CHARLES – A Hampshire woman faces felony charges after she injured another woman’s face with a glass beer bottle at a downtown establishment, according to a St. Charles police report.

Johanna L. Bablitz, 32, of the 2400 block of Rockport Road, was charged Saturday with aggravated battery and aggravated Johanna battery with a L. Bablitz deadly weapon, both felonies.

The altercation began when a “highly intoxicated” 23-yearold woman kept bumping into people as she danced at the Filling Station, 300 W. Main St., in the midnight hour, police reported.

When she bumped into Bablitz, Bablitz reportedly pushed back, and a shoving and pushing match ensued.

At one point, police reported, Bablitz used a glass beer bottle to strike the woman on the left side of her face near her eye, causing the bottle to break.

Witnesses told police Bablitz left the establishment with a man dressed as Beetlejuice.

Police located Bablitz, who apologized and asked about the woman’s physical condition, police reported.

The report indicated a nurse at Delnor Hospital in Geneva told an officer the woman had four “extensive lacerations to her face” and were “definitely disfiguring.”

At minimum, police reported, the cuts would require stitches.

Bablitz said the incident was an accident and she was getting frustrated that the woman kept bumping into her, police reported.

Police reported the injured woman was released to her parents by 4 a.m.

Bablitz is expected in court for a status hearing at 9 a.m.

They will both be remembered for their enduring optimism and Nancy’s incredible perseverance through her long battle with Parkinson’s.

Nancy was a loving daughter, wife, mother and grandmother and will be greatly missed. She is survived by three children, William (Sharon) Parkin of Colorado Springs, CO, Thomas (Lori) Parkin, of Montgomery, and Kathryn (Len) Donile of Geneva; six grandchildren, Allison, Alec, Andrew, Christine, Lauren and Robert; and great-grandson, Nathan.

When he finished college, he joined the Air Force Air Police in Chicago, before working for the family business, Zimmerman Ford, full-time. When he was 32, he met Christine, who he later married.

Michael was the father of Skott, Tiffini, Lance, Anthony and Nicole, and the grandfather of eight. He loved the beach, golf, tennis, travel, and was an avid sports fan.

ST. CHARLES – A River Grove man faces felony drug charges after authorities found him at Pheasant Run Resort with ecstasy, according to a St. Charles police report.

Marc Anthony Padilla, 20, of the 2800 block of Struckman Avenue, was charged S u n d a y with felony possession of a controlled substance with Marc Anthony i n t e n t t o Padilla deliver and possession of a controlled substance.

A police officer was at the resort on East Main Street providing assistance with

crowd control during an electronic music event when hotel security requested an officer to a room, police reported.

Disruptive party noise, loud music and talking was coming from the room, police reported. About 40 people were inside the room, which also contained a “large amount” of open, discarded alcohol containers, smelled of marijuana and, the officer reported, had a powder drug on a coffee table.

Police reportedly found Padilla with a nylon pouch containing capsules that had a presence of ecstasy, and another bag that held a scale, pills and more capsules.

Along with the Friday Live! programming, students in grades three through seven also have the option of taking part in Saturday Night Out, a similarly-structured program conducted in partnership with the Elite Sports Center on 220 North Randall Road near Route 64. Supervised by the Elite Sports training staff, participants can spend most Saturday nights during the school year from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. using the open gym to play games, such as dodge ball or ga-ga ball. The cost is $15 a person and includes refreshments for the kids and, of course, unlimited fun. For an extra $10, participants also have access to the center’s fully automated indoor batting cages.

In musican-speak, it’s a hang – a place to meet friends, grab a slice of pizza, listen to some music, maybe play a few games. In park district-speak, it’s Friday Live! – a place where you can do all of these things, but only if you’re in grades three through six. Any older, and it’s off limits. And that means you, mom and dad.

Simply put, kids stay in, parents go out.

“It’s a great place for parents to drop the kids off, maybe go out for dinner, catch a movie or run some errands,” said Rosie Fasching, recreation supervisor for Friday Live! – as well as aquatics and youth programming. “It gives them a few hours on a Friday so they can decompress from the week.”

For the ’tween crowd, it’s a few hours where they, too, can let off steam at the end of their week – whether that means just getting together with BFFs, playing a video game or running around the gym to their heart’s content.

For both parents and kids, however, the emphasis is on fun and safety.

Held two to three times each month from 6:30 to 10 p.m. at the Pottawatomie Community Center, Friday Live! programs are closely supervised by St. Charles Park District staff. Active areas are confined to the gym and multi-purpose rooms; there is no access to either the lobby or the preschool and Adult Activity Center wing of the building.

Parents must accompany their child to check-in at the registration desk and come into the gym to pick their child up at the end of the evening.

Beyond that, though, the kids get to pretty much take over the north end of the center, Fasching said.

Each Friday Live! revolves around a central motif.

Some are sports-related

(dodge ball tournament), while others are just plain fun (show up with a crazy hairstyle and outfit). One half of the gym is set up as an activity area where kids can play basketball or take part in a game related to that night’s theme. During the Nov. 21, “Carnival Night,” for instance, kids might play ring-toss or compete in a sack race. During the Dec. 12, “Silly Sock Night,” they might channel their inner Tom Cruise and take part in a sock-sliding contest.

The other half of the gym is devoted to music, spun

by DJ Rick Federici, who also bestows fun give-aways – everything from beaded necklaces and glow sticks to Frisbees and water bottles.

There’s also a photo booth, where friends can mug up for shots similar to those produced by the kind of photo stations seen at malls and county fairs. By the following Monday, the photos can be found on the park district’s Facebook page.

Down the hall from the gym, one of the center’s multi-purpose rooms is set up as a concession stand, complete with kid-favorite treats, such as pizza, pop, chips and candy.

“Sometimes we’ll do food based around the theme for the night,” Fasching said.

“For Carnival night, I’d like to have a snow-cone machine.”

Another multi-purpose room is devoted to games.

Friday Live! guests have access to two game consoles and three computer stations loaded with Minecraft.

“Every kid loves Minecraft,” Fasching said.

Attracting dozens upon dozens of kids on a regular basis, with new participants arriving each week, Friday Live! nights are a big part of the preteen social calendar, according to Fasching.

“They usually come in with their friends or will wait for the others to get here,” said Fasching. “They really do look forward to it.”

Police: Teen driver cut off, sought retaliation

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – A college student running late to class last week was charged with aggravated assault after retaliating against another driver who pulled in front of him, according to a Sugar Grove police report.

Evan M. Boewe, 19, of the 1000 block of Robinson St., Elburn, reportedly was driving fast on Route 47 just after 11 a.m. Oct. 29 because he was late to class at Waubonsee Community College when another motorist pulled in front of him at the Interstate 88 intersection.

The police report indicated Boewe’s speed shortened the amount of time the other driver had to see his approached,

and the driver pulled in front of him without realizing it.

Boewe, however, took offense to being cut off and retaliated by cutting off the other motorist, police reported.

The other motorist pulled to the side to avoid a collision, and Boewe got out of his car with the intent to yell at the couple for their driving, police reported. The couple felt threatened by Boewe’s angry approach, and the passenger punched the teen in self-defense, police reported.

Boewe was charged with aggravated assault, a Class A misdemeanor, as well as possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana.

Police reported he was released on his own recognizance.

City, McIlvaine work to resolve differences Order expected to be presented to judge today

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com The courtroom saga regarding Clifford McIlvaine’s St. Charles home soon could be over.

Kane County Judge David Akemann last year allowed the city of St. Charles to proceed with repairing McIlvaine‘s property at 605 Prairie St., including correcting an unfinished roof. The city had sued McIlvaine in 2010, pushing him to finish an improvement project that was started more than 30 years ago. A work schedule later was agreed upon in court.

The city and McIlvaine are working to resolve their differences, and an order is expected to be presented to Akemann today. Details of the order were not immediately available Wednesday afternoon.

“We’ve come to an agreement to resolve the issues,”

McIlvaine attorney Philip Piscopo said Wednesday. “We’re all hoping that this will bring the project to an end.”

Akemann recently ruled the city was within its bounds when the city had a conventional roof installed on McIlvaine’s St. Charles home last year.

Piscopo had filed a motion that the city didn’t have the authority to change the style of the roof. In a written ruling, Akemann dismissed the motion, saying the city’s actions in repairing the property “do not constitute a taking or damaging of his property and do not constitute a violation of due process.”

St. Charles hired Absolute Construction and Roofing to install a conventional asphalt roof on the house. McIlvaine wanted to install a foam and steel roof, for which he had obtained a permit.

McIlvaine briefly was jailed in 2012 when he refused to comply with the city’s plumbing code as part of the overall project. The project was supposed to be completed by the end of September 2012, according to the order.

The Kane County Health Department is advising residents that the Bellevue, Nebraska, firm of Marathon Ventures Inc. is voluntarily recalling various retail and bulk packages containing raw macadamia nuts as a precautionary measure because the products might be contaminated with salmonella, according to a news release from the health department.

Sugar Grove Public Library refinances debt Saves nearly $1 million

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Sugar Grove Public Library officials acted this week to refinance the district’s remaining debt on the new library building to save nearly $1 million.

The board approved refinancing the remaining $6.25 million, lowering the interest rate to 2.325 percent from 4.9 percent, saving $995,295, library director Shannon Halikias said.

“This will shorten the number of years we are paying back bonds,” Halikias said. “We eliminated the last [year’s] bond levy.”

The original $8 million bond issue was approved by voters Nov. 2, 2004, records show with a repayment schedule through 2023. After the official closing on the bond refinancing Nov. 19, the new payoff year will be 2022, Halikias said.

The bond refunding is being handled by Ehlers of Lisle financial consultants.

Steve Larson of Ehlers said the nearly $1 million in savings will be reflected in the property tax levy over the remaining life of the bond issue.

“That’s a lot of savings by taking one year [off] the payments,” Larson said. “The benefits will be in small increments over the years.”

Ehlers’ fee for handling the sale is $19,500, Larson said.

The Sugar Grove Public Library District received an A-plus rating from credit rating company Standard and Poor’s, Larson said.

“An A-plus rating demonstrates that the district is managing their funds wisely, despite the limited amount of income coming into the operating funds,” Larson said.

“We are paying things on time despite the fact that we are extremely cash challenged,” Halikias said.

Autumn leaves and pumpkin things Who is that off in the distance?

Could it possibly be a teenage girl wearing black leggings, a comfy blue sweater and a pair of $200 beige UGG boots? Why, yes it is.

Now, what is she holding?

Oh, golly, she’s drinking a pumpkin spice latte with extra whip cream. Wow, she is so hip.

I admit, I just described myself during the autumn season. However, I can assure you all that I’m not the only one who’s obsessed with the current weather. With it being the month of November, fall is at its peak. I couldn’t be more content as I munch on a sugary apple doughnut and get lost in a corn maze. There’s just something special about this season that makes me want to come home from school and put on a pair of fuzzy socks, curl up on my couch and casually sip warm apple cider while lighting a pumpkin vanilla candle.

Additionally, the scenery outside is like a color explosion with vibrant leaves swiftly falling to the ground. As I drive to school every morning, the lovely autumn nature makes my drive less painful.

I even can roll my car windows down and breathe in the crisp, frigid air (although I usually just crank up the heater because I’m always cold). As well, it always is entertaining to play dodge-the-squirrel while I drive. The trickiest part of that game is definitely trying to avoid a heart attack when a squirrel pops up out of nowhere with a nut in its mouth.

Then again, there are some parts of autumn that just can get overbearing, like the taste and aroma of pumpkin in 30 different variations. I remember there was once a time when pumpkin was solo. Now there’s apple pumpkin, pumpkin sugar, ginger pumpkin and so on. Gosh, just leave pumpkin alone.

BEFORE THE DIPLOMA Denise Cartina and came across millions of pumpkin food products. There were entire pages dedicated to all things pumpkin. I was amazed to find pumpkin spice marshmallows, pumpkin spice M&Ms, pumpkin spice Oreos, pumpkin pie yogurt and let’s not forget pumpkin spice vodka. I personally can say pumpkin pie yogurt is amazing, but are pumpkin spice marshmallows actually not nauseating? I need to know.

I also cannot forget to mention I saw an advertisement for whipped pumpkin pie spice peanut butter.

Now, this ad just made me irritated. I really love peanut butter, so why have I never tried this before?

But, hello, I think everyone has hopped on the pumpkin bandwagon. There’s no denying that a breakfast of fluffy pumpkin waffles with a side of coffee that’s been transformed by a pumpkin pie creamer isn’t exceptionally delectable.

Yes, I’m guilty of having pumpkin cinnamon hand lotion that reminds me of my grandparents’ home. Yet, I would be lying by stating I never would complement that lotion with a purchase of pumpkin body spray.

I’m not saying pumpkin flavors and scents have to disappear.

Large corporations should just tone down on the pumpkin craziness. Perhaps we all just should go back to enjoying autumn, pre-pumpkin takeover. Let’s give apples and pecan pies some appreciation, too.

What will Republicans do with their victories?

THE WASHINGTON POST Republicans collected a significant victory in Tuesday’s midterm elections, gaining control of the Senate to go with their control of the House. With that win comes an increased level of responsibility for the nation’s fortunes. They no longer can behave like a petty opposition party. If the GOP wants to prove before 2016 that it is better at governing than the Democrats, this is its chance to address a backlog of problems – to seek results, rather than continue to blame others for failure.

That is not the only possible path, of course. Ascendant Republicans could conclude that a strategy of rote anti-Obama opposition and ideological point-scoring put them on a path to power and should be maintained. For their part, Democrats might be tempted to discount Tuesday’s results as the inevitable consequence of a uniquely tough Senate map; they, too, might see little reason for give and take. President Barack Obama

could turn to unilateral executive decisions that take compromise off the table.

But those depressingly familiar strategies haven’t worked out well for the country, and they haven’t worked for the parties, both miserably unpopular, according to exit polls. Republicans captured battleground Senate seats and made close runs at some others. At the same time, they did not claim anything close to 60 seats, the magic number that would allow them to bypass Democrats, and of course the White House remains in Democratic hands. The country has empowered Republicans – to share power.

Republicans, then, should treat the next two years as an opportunity to legislate in good faith, not to push serious work beyond the next election in the fantasy that the country permanently has turned in a more conservative direction.

For his part, Obama should not embark on his final two years with an assumption of Republican intransigence that would be self-fulfilling.

Author writes about St. Charles in new book Book signing planned Nov. 20 at Arcada Theatre

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com In her second book, “Haunted Nights at Drumheller Castle – Ethereal Quandary: A St. Charles Tale,” Bartlett resident Faly Colaizzi continues the tale she created in her first book, “Haunted Nights at Drumheller Castle: A St. Charles Tale.”

Colaizzi will have a book signing for her new book Thursday, Nov. 20, at the Arcada Theatre, 105 E. Main St., St. Charles. During the event, which will be from 6:30 to 10 p.m., she will read selections from the book.

Kane County Chronicle reporter Eric Schelkopf had the chance to talk to Colaizzi about the new book.

Eric Schelkopf: So, your new book is a continuation from your first book?

Faly Colaizzi: Both books are set in St. Charles. The first book is set in 1967 and the second book is set in 1970, so it’s three years later.

And in the series, I wanted to make a distinction between the two books, so the second one is called “Ethereal Quandary.”

Schelkopf: And there’s significance in having it at the Arcada, since one of the chapters in your book features the theater.

Colaizzi: Yes, chapter eight in both books – it just happened that way – both are about the Arcada Theatre. And also the Gallery of Ghoulish Homes Tour, put on by the St. Charles Park District, is featured in chapter nine.

I would go on the tour through their homes, and actually sat and wrote about them.

Schelkopf: What made you want to write the second book?

Colaizzi: The first book is 146 pages long. The second book is 344 pages long.

It really turned out to be more of a novel.

Writing a 344-page book is astonishing to me.

Schelkopf: Was the process hard?

Colaizzi: Not so much the writing. It was more when I got into the editing process. It was torture.

Basically, I had written notes for almost a year. And I was thinking to myself, “Wow, I’ve got a really good storyline for part two.”

In the second book, I added a bunch of new characters.

Once I had about a year’s worth of notes, I basically sat at my computer and started typing away.

Before I knew it, I was about 80 pages into it. The whole entire process took about three years. It was a lot of work.

Schelkopf: For people who live in the area, are they going to recognize a lot of things you are writing about? What should people expect from the book?

Colaizzi: There’s a lot of historical fiction that I talk about. I talk about the Burchell Hotel, which was one of the first hotels in St. Charles.

There are a lot of historical facts that I put in there, and I interweave them into my story. My story is a historical fiction tale.

The Drumheller Castle is obviously the Dunham Castle in Wayne, but how I write about it in the books is that the town of Wayne is very much adjacent to St. Charles. It’s kind of like this town of Wayne is more like a ghost town with a castle in it.

And that’s why I set the books in 1967 and 1970, because I kind of wanted a little of an old-fashioned feel to it. All my books are printed on more of a yellowish kind of paper and a real crisp white paper because I wanted that antique feel. Every sentence is handcrafted.

I actually live about seven minutes away from the Dunham Castle.

I wrote it as a classic Halloween tale that people could put on their shelves and read it to their grandkids someday, or just keep as a keepsake. The second book is a psychological thriller, so there’s a lot involved in the story, but there’s one storyline of this child who has this neardeath experience that comes out of it with all these paranormal powers.

And in the second book, you think this kid is going insane, but he’s really not.

It’s kind of a trick ending, and of course it ends well, but there’s a lot of twists and turns in this book.

I really think my readers are going to enjoy it.

Altmayer chasing field, former Geneva running standouts Junior’s sectional performance puts her among elite

That’s about the time the Geneva girls cross country program was at the peak of its recent heyday, a run that included consecutive Class 3A team state championships in 2007 and 2008.

Last weekend, Altmayer steered discussion to the dynasty once more. Her runner-up finish of 17:02 at the IHSA Class 3A St. Charles East Sectional at LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve marked the second-fastest time in the program’s steep history.

Four years ago, Kelly Whitley set the standard by finishing in 16:43 at the state meet at Peoria’s Detweiller Park. At the time, Almayer admittedly “wasn’t into the whole running scene” or charting the standout athletes of the past.

She certainly is now.

“Now that I’m going to the same meets they went to and I see how they did there, I so wish I would have followed

“And I’m really jealous of what they did because that’s so great.”

Not unlike the majority of the sectional field – only Streamwood senior Gabby Juarez (16:58) was faster – Altmayer since has left her former sports behind to fully pursue cross country and track.

She stopped playing soccer her freshman year, and elected not to continue as a guard in the girls basketball program this season.

Even before then, Altmayer hovered in the stratosphere of Whitley – a triathlete now running at Wisconsin – Illi-

nois-Chicago standout Tess Ehrhardt and other top Vikings runners of the past. In 2012, she finished her debut state meet in a 36th-place 17:27, which still was among the top marks in program history.

Altmayer credits an offseason camp with Arlington Heights-based SUB5 Peak Performance Running for helping bolster her strategies and lowering her times this fall.

In mid-September, she ran the state course in 17:26 at the First to the Finish Invitational, but hopes the weather and stakes help conspire to an even faster effort two months later.

“Since it’s so wide open at Detweiller, you always have so

many people yelling for you, shouting for you, and that encouragement, you don’t really get anywhere else,” Altmayer said. “So it really propels you forward.”

Geneva finished as sectional team runner-up to Naperville North while besting its projected seed according to DyeStat IL, the noted cross country and track website.

Returners such as senior Brooke Nusser, junior Emma McSpadden and sophomores Emma Ehrhardt and Mary Grace Neville have flanked Altmayer throughout the season.

Freshmen Sarah Mozden and Taryn Christy rounded out the top seven at sectionals.

Classmate Brittany Caskey was the team’s sixth runner at regionals, fueling Geneva’s depth and coach Bob Thomson’s dilemma about the final two state spots.

“It’s a nice problem to have when you have a little depth,” Thomson said, “but sometimes I wish it was more cut and dried.”

For Altmayer, the only thing close to regret on her part boils down to revisionist history.

She still wishes she were more in tune to Geneva’s cross country past, but also relishes the opportunity to thrust herself into the narrative.

“I was really pumped that I finally moved up,” Altmayer said.

“You never want to lose in the semifinal with a chance to play in the Pepsi final, but it helped us. We approached training different after that moment. The guys believed in what we could be, and they’ve pursued that.”

The Warriors have seldom been seriously tested since, with Tuesday’s supersectional against Peoria Notre Dame an obvious exception.

A last-minute goal in regulation from Notre Dame tied the score, but Wheaton Academy

Michael Carver –both starters who missed the final weekend with injuries last year – have helped solidify the Warriors.

Goal scoring dynamo Ty Seager (36 goals) is the team’s marquee player, but the Warriors have proven well-rounded, including a back line of right back Parker Setran, central defenders Andrew VanNispen and Carver and left back Hunter Finnegan who have exceeded expectations. Setran and Carver started last year.

“We were a little worried coming in what our defense was going to look like because we lost Marshall West … but we’ve had 15 shutouts I believe

and only 13 goals scored on us before the Peoria game, so I think our defense has been huge, for sure,” Setran said.

Brooke expects rugged challenges this weekend, beginning with a Springfield team that is 25-3. But based on the Warriors’ extensive postseason experience and the demeanor of this year’s group, he thinks there’s plenty of reason to anticipate a rosier ending this time.

“Everyone always ask me ‘Are you guys ready to go, are you ready for the big game?’

The answer is always ‘Yes,’ but it’s been rooted just in a sense of calm,” Brooke said.

WEST CHICAGO – Playing in the IHSA Class 2A final four is not new for the Wheaton Academy boys soccer team, but this year’s Warriors might be uniquely equipped to finish the job.

The Warriors will play in the state semifinals Friday against Springfield, marking the program’s third straight advancement to the season’s final weekend. Wheaton Academy is looking for a different outcome this time after settling for fourth place in 2012 and 2013.

This year’s Warriors (23-11) enjoyed the most dominant regular season during the three-year run, with their lone loss coming in a Sept. 20 Pepsi Showdown semifinal against Morton. Since then, only a tie against Batavia has interrupted the Warriors’ string of wins.

Wheaton Academy coach Jeff Brooke said the 2-0 loss to Morton was a transformative point in his team’s season.

“We went back to training

junior midfielder Jacob Kapitaniuk supplied the decisive response late in double overtime. Brooke called the tense victory “a stretching moment” for the Warriors.

Kapitaniuk missed last season’s run with an ACL tear, but has become a major piece of this season’s success, leading the team with 14 assists.

“We do feel that this is a special team,” Kapitaniuk said.

“Every team and every year is different. We’re very confident in what we do right now and what our playing style is.”

Kilbride leads way for Waubonsee soccer Batavia native shooting for national title Numbers, both big and small, have defined the season for Haley Kilbride.

Kilbride – a Batavia native and Rosary graduate – and her Waubonsee Community College soccer teammates have seen big numbers work in their favor all season. Massive goal totals have accompanied most wins – 14-0, 15-1, 8-0, 7-0.

The scores and margins of victory have been gigantic, and it’s why the Lady Chiefs are one win away from a trip to the national championship tournament.

Waubonsee went undefeated in conference play – and has lost only twice all season – and plays in the championship

game of the regional playoffs Saturday. A win would send the team to the NJCAA Division I National Championship Tournament in Florida.

In two playoff matches so far, the Chiefs have outscored their opponents by a combined 19-0, a couple results that echoed the trend from the regular season.

“I think we were all surprised the competition didn’t seem as great as it was last season,” Kilbride said. “But I think that we’d been working really hard in our offseason and working on shooting and finishing.”

That work most certainly paid off.

But although the big numbers have helped the team excel, it’s the small numbers that have turned Kilbride into the player she is today, the player who earned a captaincy on her team, who was named her conference’s and region’s

ON CAMPUS Vinnie Duber player of the year.

Kilbride is small for a college athlete at 5-foot-2, 100 pounds. Despite that build, she’s managed to succeed on the field, even when going up against bigger players has been a little scary.

“At times it’s really intimidating because as soon as someone puts the body on me, I tend to go down,” Kilbride said. “But I just use the one thing I have, which is speed.

So I just use that and foot skills to get around the girls.

That’s kind of been working for me this season.

“It’s made me have to be a player in different ways other than putting a body on the ball and push someone off because I can’t always do

that. All your struggles make you better. As a kid, all my coaches told me, ‘You have speed. So that’s what you need to use.’ ” That kind of style, not letting a size difference get in the way of being a top-flight player, has inspired her teammates and turned her into a leader. Even if she hasn’t been very vocal, leading by the example of overcoming that size difference has made her a magnet for teammates seeking her leadership.

“I’m not one so much to lead by words,” she said. “I’m usually more on the quiet side, so I try to lead more by action. But I think I’ve tried to lead by example and help other girls on the team struggling with something by giving my input, and they can take it or leave it or whatever they want. But a lot of girls come to me for advice. So I try to give it to the best of my ability.”

As Kilbride’s soccer-playing career at Waubonsee is coming to an end, she and her teammates have their sights set on the ultimate prize, a national title. This year, with all the winning and all those big margins of victory, Kilbride says she thinks this team can get it done.

“It’s a good way to kind of end your [career] at Waubonsee,” she said. “I knew our team had potential to go last year, but we kind of crumbled a little at the end. But this year, we know how it is, so we’re all trying to stay strong and take it one game at a time and not get too ahead of ourselves.”

Kane: Versteeg ‘one of our best players right now’

Ottawa’s Erik Karlsson, the 2012 Norris Trophy winner as the league’s best defensemen, stood between him and the crease. Versteeg faked going to his right, then swooped to his left, leaving Karlsson flat-footed and helpless as he slipped right by. A quick deke later, Versteeg

had similarly undressed goaltender Craig Anderson and slipped the puck in on the far side for a goal.

It was a dazzling play on a pair of brilliant moves – two moves Versteeg might not have had the ability, nor the confidence, to make last season.

“He’s playing great,” Patrick Kane said. “He might be one of our best players right now.”

After posting a goal and an assist Tuesday night in Montreal, Versteeg now has three goals

and two assists on the year. He’s looking more like the Versteeg of the more distant past and less like the Versteeg of the recent past, the shell of himself he was by the end of last season as he slogged his way through the long recovery from major knee surgery.

And with Patrick Sharp out potentially weeks with an apparent knee injury – the Hawks had no update on Wednesday, and won’t address his status until after today’s practice – Versteeg could be primed to

step into an even larger role to help fill the skill void.

“I thought he’s gotten better every single game since he’s returned from the injury,” Hawks coach Joel Quenneville said. “He’s got some quickness, sees plays, has a high-end IQ out there offensively. He can contribute [to the point] where it’s a threat no matter who he’s playing with.”

Kane said that Versteeg seems “excited” to be playing.

“Relieved” could be another word for it. After spending

his summer working out and finally putting behind him the knee injury he suffered in March of 2013, Versteeg had an outstanding preseason, and looked faster and more dangerous than he had last season.

Then, two days before the regular season started, he suffered a lower-body injury at a practice. He was “devastated,” and wondered if he was in for another season of struggles.

But he wound up missing only four games, and it appears he hasn’t lost a step.

Fourth time’s the charm?

Whether St. Charles East or Benet wins tonight’s IHSA Class 4A Bartlett Sectional final girls volleyball match, that figures to be the refrain for either side.

East seeks its first win against Benet in four tries this season. The Redwings are looking to eliminate their fourth consecutive Tri-Cities opponent this postseason en route to their fourth successive sectional title.

“They’re all great players on that team,” Saints senior libero Anne Hughes said. “I think having played them three times also helps us. We know what their tendencies are. We know that they’re a 5-1 (alignment), who their key hitters are, how many defenses.”

Third-seeded East (30-8) pushed top-seeded Benet (37-1) to three sets when the traditional powers met in mid-October at the Mizuno Cup at Aurora’s Great Lakes Center. Like Mosquera, Fara – a Northwestern recruit – is flanked by a number of impact underclassmen, including setter Sara Nielsen and left-handed swinging outside hitter Veronica Snelling, both sophomores.

“They’re disciplined and they follow what they’re supposed to. We’re just going to have to come out and play as hard as we can,” Saints coach Jennie Kull said.

“That’s all there is to it.”

Batavia (regional semifinal), St. Charles North (regional final) and Geneva (sectional semifinal) have vowed similarly since the postseason started.

Benet defeated Batavia and North in the regular season before meeting again in regionals. Tuesday marked the first meeting of the fall between the Vikings and Redwings, who needed three sets to decide the outcome.

“You know, we don’t get to choose the fact that we’re in the Bartlett (Sectional) and are from [Lisle],” Redwings coach Brad Baker said. “It’s never really happened. This is the first time we’ve been [scheduled] to play these guys. The IHSA switched and did what they did.”

As a result, Saints coaches didn’t have to scramble to scout a potential sectional final opponent. Tonight, for the fourth time in six weeks, they’ll see the Redwings.

Bears’ defense prepares to try to slow down Rodgers

He’s doing the things he does on Sundays consistently day in and day out so it’s a challenge. It’s competition.”

Rodgers has owned the Bears of late, winning the past nine games that he started and finished against them. Asked how the Bears managed to have success against Green Bay last season at Lambeau Field, Bears linebacker Lance Briggs responded quickly and with brutal honesty.

“Shea (McClellin) took out Aaron Rodgers,” Briggs said Wednesday.

If anyone has the secret to understanding Rodgers, it’s Jared Allen.

Allen has registered 15.5 sacks against the Packers since 2008. Allen, who missed the

Week 4 game against the Packers because of pneumonia, said the key to containing Rodgers is to try to make him one-dimensional and to force the Packers into third-and-long situations.

But then there’s dealing with Rodgers, who was 22 of 28 for 302 yards and four touchdowns against the Bears in September at Soldier Field. In addition to defending against Rodgers’ quick release, Allen said that much of trying to keep him in check comes down to understanding what his game is all about.

It’s something Allen has spent a career doing.

“You’ve got to know Aaron – you’ve got to study him and know what he’s going to do,” Allen said Wednesday. “He will

give you shots to get to him because he has the ability to go down the field at any given time and he’ll take those shots on you.

“So you’ve got to keep rushing and you can’t get tired of, three-step, three-step, ball out, ball out, ball out, ball out, ball out. It’s just a game youv’e got to play.”

As the Bears discovered in the loss earlier this season, they can’t allow Rodgers the time to sit in the pocket and pick the defense apart. This season, Rodgers has completed 67.6 percent of his passes and has been only intercepted three times while throwing for 19 touchdowns.

Despite the Bears’ inability to pressure Rodgers in Week 4, Rodgers expects a different story Sunday when the Bears will look to start the season’s second half with a victory.

“I think any time you’re playing a team that is coming off the bye, you have to expect some unscouted looks,” Rodgers said in a conference call with Chicago beat reporters on Wednesday. “That’s just the way teams

LAKE FOREST – Willie Young once had a private conversation with Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

What was said between the two will remain top secret, Young said Wednesday, until the veteran defensive end who leads the Bears in sacks this season actually adds Rodgers to the list of quarterbacks he has gotten to over the course of his five-year NFL career.

Doing that, Young and his teammates understand, is easier said that done. Even though Rodgers has been sacked 20 times this season – including once in the Packers 38-17 win over the Bears in Week 4 – getting to Rodgers will be a priority Sunday at Lambeau Field.

But as Young has discovered, putting pressure on Rodgers and actually finishing him off are two different things. It’s part of what makes Aaron Rodgers, well, Aaron Rodgers.

“Everybody in the league, everybody in the United States of America knows about this guy Rodgers,” Young said Wednesday at Halas Hall. “...

He doesn’t do anything anything wrong.”

So how do the Bears add to the 252 times Rodgers has been sacked during his career?

“You’ve got do the best you can to get there,” Young said.

And for the Bears defense, that means understanding what it is going to get on Sunday from Rodgers.

Allen said he and his teammates will do their best to play to Rodgers’ weaknesses – which as Young can attest to – aren’t high in number. But if the Bears hope to leave Lambeau with a victory while snapping Rodgers’ personal run of success against the Bears, they know it will start with making Rodgers feel uncomfortable.

HPV vaccine benefits include reducing risk of cancer Dear Doctor K: My daughter’s pediatrician would like her to have the HPV vaccine. I’m not sure. Is there evidence the HPV vaccine has some real benefit?

Dear Reader: Yes, there is evidence – overwhelming evidence.

And with this vaccine, the benefit is not that it will reduce the risk of a short-lived illness, like the flu. This vaccine will reduce your daughter’s risk of getting a common and life-threatening cancer.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the main cause of cervical cancer and genital warts. The linkage of this virus to cancer, and the ability of a vaccine against the virus to reduce the risk of cancer, are solidly established. So much so, in fact, that the discovery of HPV’s connection to cervical cancer was honored with the Nobel Prize.

There are two different forms of the HPV vaccine, Cervarix and Gardasil. Both are safe and effective. The Cervarix vaccine protects against two HPV types, which cause 70 percent of cervical cancers. The Gardasil vaccine protects against these two types as well as two others, which cause 90 percent of genital warts. Gardasil also has been shown to protect against cancers of the vulva,

Vaccination is recommended for girls aged 11 to 12 years. But it may be given as early as age 9.

The vaccine is also recommended for females 13 to 26 who did not get the vaccine earlier. The vaccine is given as three injections over a six-month period.

(Vaccination with Gardasil is also recommended for boys ages 11 or 12, to prevent anal cancer and genital warts.)

Based on conversations I’ve had with my pediatrician colleagues, I’d guess your concerns have to do either with either safety or sexual behavior.

Let’s start with safety. Side effects are possible from any medical treatment, including vaccines.

But extensive studies have shown that the HPV vaccine is safe for the vast majority of people.

You may also worry that getting the vaccine will give your daughter the green light to have sex. I’m not aware of any evidence that kids given this vaccine are more likely to have sex as teens

than kids who aren’t given the vaccine.

This vaccine is about cancer, not sex. The idea is to give the vaccine well before any sexual activity – and exposure to HPV – begins.

The HPV vaccine has already had a big impact. A study published in 2013 showed that since doctors began to routinely give the HPV vaccine in 2006, the occurrence of the cancer-causing HPV strains covered by the vaccine has dropped by 56 percent in girls ages 14 to 19 years.

Remember, though, that the vaccine does not protect against all types of HPV. It is not an absolute guarantee against cervical cancer. As your daughter gets older, she still should get screened for cervical cancer even if she has the HPV vaccine.

The bottom line is that a series of three shots will protect your daughter from a form of cancer that can cause premature death.

That’s a gift any parent would want to give his or her child.

Dr. Wallace: My mother asked me to write to see what advice you have for a major family problem.

I share a room with a younger sister who has been stealing things from me and hiding them. She also has stolen things from my mother. I know that she is stealing because I have seen her place things on her dresser that I know weren’t hers, but when morning comes the article has somehow vanished in the night.

We think that she is putting things in boxes and then hiding the boxes. Mom is afraid that she will start stealing things from her friend’s house and maybe even steal from stores. I hope you can give us some advice on how to solve the problem. – Nameless, Moncton, New Brunswick Dear Nameless: Since it’s so obvious that your sister is stealing things, why haven’t Mom and you confronted her, especially when she puts things on her dresser that are not hers? Have your mom discuss the problem with your sister and you together. It’s better to be upfront than to keep silent and hope the problem goes away by itself.

Your sister has an emotional problem and I’d advise that she acquires professional counseling to find out what is causing her to steal.

Dr. Wallace: I’m a 15-year-old girl and have two younger brothers who are 12 and 13. We live in a nice house with two very special parents. I would have said two perfect parents except that they have one huge flaw: They both smoke. And to make matters worse, they smoke at home.

According to the association, about 50 million non-smoking adults are exposed to secondhand smoke and about half of all American children live in families with one or more smokers. And now comes the sad news.

The association says that those who come into contact with secondary smoke are 1.3 times more likely to wind up with heart disease, lung cancer or other respiratory illnesses than non-smokers who enjoy smoke-free environments.

According to Dr. William Douglas at the American Heart Association, secondary smoke could be a contributing factor to the deaths of 40,000 non-smoking Americans every year.

That, in itself, should convince your parents to stop smoking altogether!!

I hope not a lot! First, perhaps North should have responded one no-trump, but especially since he was a passed hand, one can understand two clubs. Now, though, South should not have rebid two spades. Never rebid in a five-card suit unless you have absolutely nothing better to do. Here, South, knowing his side did not have game values, should have passed over two clubs. (Agreed, he might have raised to three clubs, because on a better layout of the East-West cards, three no-trump would have been makable.)

Against two spades, West led the diamond seven, second-highest from a weak suit. East won with his king and returned a diamond. South won with his jack, cashed the spade ace (a questionable play), and led a low heart to dummy’s queen. East took the trick and inaccurately tried to give West a diamond ruff.

(If South had four diamonds, he probably would have rebid two diamonds, not two spades.) Declarer discarded his club eight, but then misguessed by finessing his club jack.

West won and gave his partner a club ruff. When East returned a heart, South won and played a trump, but West won, gave his partner another club ruff with his spade jack, and received a heart ruff in return for down two.
