Two hurt in 2-car crash in Campton Hills

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com CAMPTON HILLS – Two people suffered injuries and one of them was cited after a two-vehicle crash Wednesday in Campton Hills, officials said.

The Fox River and Countryside Fire/Rescue District and Campton Hills police were dispatched at 1:54 p.m.

Wednesday to the crash, which occurred on Burlington Road near Far View Court, Fox River Fire Chief Carl DeLeo said.

Susanne Jensky, 72, of North Aurora was first taken from the crash to Delnor Hospital, then transferred to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, according to police.

Jensky was in stable condition as of 9:25 p.m. Wednesday, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

Jensky was headed east in a minivan on Burlington Road when she, for an unknown reason, veered into the westbound lane of traffic, according to a police report.

ST. CHARLES – A passenger on a motorcycle suffered a minor foot injury after being hit by a car shortly after 3 p.m.

Wednesday in the 700 block of Randall Road, St. Charles police said.

The driver of the car, Monica McGlinchy, 42, of St. Charles, was cited for improper lane use, St. Charles Police Cmdr.

‘And Then There Were None’ set for this weekend If you go

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Agatha Christie’s murder mystery, “And Then There Were None,” will be performed this weekend at Geneva High School.

Show times are 7:30 p.m.

Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday in the auditorium at 416 McKinley Ave. Tickets are $7.

Director Konnie Kay Sherry, who teaches theater and dance at Elgin Community College, said the rehearsals are going well.

“I have 11 actors, and I’m thrilled with them,” Sherry said. “They have come a long way, working on accents and characters. They will be doing British and Cockney accents. It’s fun.”

Assistant director Lexie Pihera said she is in charge of organizing the stage direction for all of the actors.

“It’s a pretty small cast compared to what we usually have,” Pihera said. “I love [Christie’s] writing. I love the

Suit over St. Charles sushi bar tumble dismissed with prejudice

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A Sugar Grove woman’s lawsuit against a St. Charles restaurant recently was dismissed with prejudice, according to court records.

Attorneys for Sarah Chacon of Sugar Grove and Wok’n Fire, 181 S. First St., St. Charles, agreed Oct. 22 to dismiss Chacon’s case against the restaurant with prejudice, according to a court document.

Court records indicate costs related to the suit were paid.

“It is further ordered that the court retains jurisdiction to adjudicate/address outstanding liens and to enforce the terms and conditions of

the settlement agreement,” the document stated.

One of Chacon’s attorney’s, Justin Stoner, declined to comment Wednesday on the terms of the settlement agreement. A message left for Don McGarrah, one of the attorneys representing Wok’n Fire, was not immediately returned Wednesday afternoon.

Chacon went to Wok’n Fire for its third-year anniversary celebration Dec. 15, 2012, according to the original complaint.

The dining area, including the elevated sushi bar counter, reportedly was transformed into a night club.

to dance with employees on the sushi bar counter, which was adjacent to a temporary disc jockey stage, according to the complaint.

Alcoholic beverages also were being served, even to patrons who were encouraged to dance on the counter, according to the lawsuit.

Chacon “fell off of the sushi

bar counter temporary dance floor over the sneeze guard window and into the pit where the sushi chefs normally worked,” the complaint stated.

The complaint indicates Chacon suffered severe and permanent injuries, medical expenses and, among other hardships, loss of wages.

Kaneville brother and sister both fighting through issues caused by low muscle tone

alagattolla@shawmedia.com KANEVILLE – Emma Sohst has two children who are unable to walk, and she said caring for Travis and Lily Whitman can be a challenge.

The Kaneville resident spoke of how Travis, 5, and Lily, nearly 1, have spent time at hospitals for treatment for a condition that causes them to have very low muscle tone. She said her husband, Robert Whitman, works overtime hours as often as he can at his job at Caterpillar to help pay for the kids’ care. Night nurses are needed for the children, and when that’s not able to be arranged, Sohst or her husband must stay up all night to provide care as the children sleep.

Despite all of that, Sohst said she considers herself fortunate. Travis has for years depended on the use of a ventilator, a tracheostomy and a feeding tube, and Lily has similar issues. But Sohst said Travis is able to talk and express himself and participate in kindergarten at Blackberry Creek Elementary School.

She said he can get around with the use of a wheelchair, and he and his sister have formed a strong bond. She said Travis has been able to participate in such activities as fishing.

“People think we are sad all of the time,” Sohst said. “But really, we’re happy most of the time. Look at all that he can do.

We don’t want him focusing on what he isn’t able to do. We get excited for him, and he gets excited.”

A fundraising effort launched by a friend, Becky Smith – who said she has known Robert Whitman for more than 20 years – has raised more than $17,000 during a period of months. There are many expenses, Sohst said, including a specialized van that was donated but will need to be replaced. Sohst said Travis was a few months old when a pediatrician mentioned he was “floppy” because of low muscle tone. Then, when he was about 5 months old, he became ill. At first, she said she thought it was a cold, but she discovered it was pneumonia.

He was tested, but she said the cause of the floppiness couldn’t be identified. Soon after, he was placed on a ventilator, given the tracheostomy and the feeding tube. He is unable to clear his lungs, and Sohst said he has abnormally high carbon dioxide levels.

She said she knew she wanted Travis to have a sibling, saying “I couldn’t imagine growing up without my sister.” She said there was no way to know

Lily would be born with the same issues, but she said they identified Lily’s issues shortly after she was born. At least that time, she said, she knew what to expect.

Sohst said the low muscle tone is the cause of the issues.

They are unable to walk. She said they spend a lot of time lying next to each other. While they are sleeping, they might need care during the night, and the night nurse will start the feeding process, as well as provide medicine, “otherwise, we wouldn’t be able to sleep,” Sohst said.

While it’s unknown whether Travis and Lily will be able to walk someday, Peggy Whitman has hopes her grandchildren one day will be able to do just that. She said she is optimistic about the future.

“Travis is going to make

his mark on this world,” Peggy Whitman said. “I used to cry when he was little, but now I know this is who Travis is. Do I hope he could walk? Yes. Will I be disappointed if he doesn’t?

No. … He brings so much joy to everyone he meets.”

Fundraising and awareness

Peggy Whitman has scheduled her first fundraising event to be from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday at West Chicago VFW Post 6791, 431 N. Neltnor Blvd., West Chicago. Pulled pork and hot dogs will be served.

She said there will be live music, raffles and many silent auction items. The cost is $10, and kids can attend for free. Tickets are available at the door, and she encouraged those who intend to go to call

Smith, who started the online funding effort, said she has heard from some who questioned the fundraising efforts, but she said some “don’t realize that Robert works his fingers to the bone. … They don’t get a lot from the state or any agency.”

Smith said she has been amazed at the generosity of the donors.

“A lot of the donations we’ve got are from people we don’t even know,” she said, adding, “a lot of the larger donations are from complete strangers.”

Sohst said there are many needs. For instance, a lift is needed at the home. Ultimately, they’ll need to redo a bathroom to provide a special shower. The van the family uses was donated, but the replacement will be costly.

Sohst said all of the effort is worth it.

“It might be extra work taking care of them, but they are our kids, and we do whatever we can for them,” she said.

“There are lot of people in a lot worse situations than we are.”

Martha Moon Cox passed away in Prophetstown, Illinois, with her husband, Bob Cox at her side.

Martha was born June 11, 1930, and raised in Ohio, the third child of O.P. Moon and Catherine Fauver, after sister, Margaret and brother, Bill.

She taught elementary school in various locations including Rocky River, Ohio, Oakland, California and New Rochelle, France. While in Ohio, she received her master’s degree in education at Case Western, and married Robert Cox in 1962. They made their home in Glen Ellyn and Batavia, where Cathy and Bob were raised.

CORNEAL RINGS Older patient often develop a grayish ring or arc around the corneas of both eyes. “Arcus senilis,” as it is known, is composed of lipid/cholesterol deposits and typically does not cause vision problems and does not require treatment. Neither has it been found to be linked to cardiovascular disease. However, when “corneal arcus” develops in individuals under the age of 40 (“arcus juvenilis”), it is recommended that patients get blood tests to determine their blood cholesterol levels. And because the average person with high cholesterol does not have an arc of any type, the absence of arcus senilis should not necessarily be taken as an indication that blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels are not high.

Pearl Blass, age 97, of Batavia, peacefully went to rest on Nov. 4, 2015.

She was born Dec. 14, 1917, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the daughter of Johan and Helen (Techel) Bril. She was a loving mother to her daughters, a generous and loving grandmother to her grandchildren and a doting, loving great-grandmother.

Pearl enjoyed many things. She loved to read, play golf, play cards, travel (31 countries), and she especially loved her family and many friends. She believed in “Make new friends, but keep the old - One is silver and the other gold.” Her sunny, friendly, kind disposition made her a friend to everyone she met.

She worked at the Batavia Public Library for 38 years. Many Batavia children will remember her as the lady who told the great stories.

The children’s room at the library at the corner of Lincoln St. and Wilson St. was dedicated to her and she was the keynote speaker at the dedication of the current beautiful library building.

Over the years, Pearl loved to volunteer. She had many positions at the United Methodist Church of Batavia, serving 13 years as the Financial Secretary, many years as a Sunday School teacher, as Circle chairman, as UMW treasurer, as Nursery Supervisor and in many other positions. She volunteered at the Hi-Hat Shop, at the Batavia Depot Museum, as a delivery lady for Meals on Wheels, and at the library after her retirement at age 80.

She was a long-time member of Chapter EA of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, serving in many capacities.

She was also a member of the Chippers and Par Pals Golf League and the Batavia Historical Society.

Pearl and her husband, John, moved to Batavia in 1940, when Furnas Electric Company relocated from Milwaukee. They enjoyed 48 years of marriage.

She was predeceased by John; her brother, Burton LaBril; a great-grandson, Gilbert; and by her parents.

Concert to raise adoption awareness

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com BATAVIA TOWNSHIP – A concert to raise adoption awareness and money for an orphanage in China will be at 7 p.m. Saturday at Sanctuary Church, 1S430 Wenmoth Road, Batavia Township.

Four local musicians – J. Brian Hill, Howard Clark and Candy Kless of Geneva and Nancy Small-Killeen of St. Charles – will perform, along with a community choir of 20 local singers.

Hill said the concert is free, but a freewill offering will be accepted. The offering will be sent to Henan Kids International, an orphanage in China.

Gift items will be available to buy at the concert, Hill said.

“We hope to raise $5,000 toward a goal of $10,000 by Nov. 14,” Hill said. “We have a concert here and one in Iowa. Then, we are looking for matching corporate donations.”

Hill said he was expecting about 150 to attend the concert.

“I’d like to double that, but I’m being realistic,” Hill said.

At a recent Geneva City Council meeting, Hill and Clark spoke about November being National Adoption Awareness Month.

Hill said there are agencies around the world that help children to “find their forever

families.”

“There are millions of children everywhere, all over the world, that don’t have a mom or a dad to tuck them in at night or hold them when they’re hurting or to wipe away their tears when they cry,” Hill said. “This concert is intended to help one of those agencies.”

Hill said he has four children, two of which were adopted internationally.

“Howard also has a younger brother who is adopted. He also has a son who is adopted,” Hill said. “For us, adoption is a way of life.”

“Please come to the concert,” Clark said. “Invite all your friends for the benefit of adoption awareness.”

Pottawatomie Community Center is exactly what the ’tween crowd does during “Friday Live!” nights. Open to children in grades third through sixth, the center becomes a place to meet friends, grab a slice of pizza, listen to some music and play some games – a great place and way to let off steam at the end of their week.

Such episodes of spontaneous playtime can be nicely balanced through more focused recreational activities. Although it may sound like a contradiction in terms, “structured play” takes the art of having a good time to new levels through programs and lessons that emphasize fun while slipping in a little learning.

It’s like mixing spinach in with spaghetti – kids won’t realize they’re soaking

up important skills while they’re caught in the excitement of playtime.

“Structured play emphasizes skills development with the intention of having fun,” Caine said. “It also provides socialization opportunities and the chance to make new friends.”

Music classes, such as “Music Together Sing-aLong,” and art programs, such as “Pee Wee Picasso and Play,” may appeal to budding choristers and artists, while sports programs, such as “Fencing” and “ProForce Baseball Fundamental Instruction,” introduce young athletes to alternative activities, as well as reinforce basic skills in established sports – all while stressing fun, along with imparting the rules of the game.

According to police reports, Schmidt struck the victim on the head and body with open hands, threw a pitcher of water at him and tried to push him while he entered a stairwell to go to the basement.

• Benjamin S. Amato, 23, of the 1200 block of Shoop Circle, Geneva, was charged Sunday, Oct. 11, with possession of marijuana and received a written warning for driving without wearing a seat belt.

LOCAL BRIEF ‘Koats for Kids’ fundraiser set for Tuesday in STC

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Breakfast Rotary Club will host its annual “Koats for Kids” fundraiser from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

Tuesday at the Beehive Tavern and Grille, 204 W. Main St., St. Charles.

The Beehive has offered to donate a portion of dinner sales that night to “Koats for Kids.”

The funds received from the dinner sales – along with any other donations – will go toward buying new coats for children, which will be distributed by Lazarus House in St. Charles and the Tri-Cities Salvation Army.

Kohl’s has given the St. Charles Breakfast Rotary Club a

$1,000 grant that will go toward buying the coats, a news release from the Rotary Club stated.

Related events at the Beehive on Tuesday will include a 50/50 raffle and drawings for Beehive gift certificates.

Are online classes really better?

I am pretty fortunate to have been born in the late 1990s. I grew up in a time where I still was able to have a traditional childhood and play with dolls and color in physical coloring books, but I also was introduced to new kinds of technology, such as computers (remember the lovely dial-up tone?) and the classic iPod, for example.

I didn’t grow up using iPads in my elementary school classes, nor were a bulk of my academic assignments online. I didn’t get a touch-screen cellphone when I was 8; I got my first phone (it slid open and even had a keyboard) for my 13th birthday. Whether or not our society wants to accept it, we live in a fast-paced digital age. Advances in technology are plentiful every year, so much so that it’s hard to keep up with. There’s no need to question why children are more wrapped around electronics now, since it just has to do with the age in which we live in.

During my speech class last week, my teacher asked for our thoughts on online classes. Specifically, my teacher wanted our opinions on how we would feel if we had the chance to take a speech class online without ever coming to class once.

Some classmates of mine were a bit iffy about the idea of a speech class online. The whole part of a communications class is to get up in front of a full class of students and talk. Thus, if classes completely were online, surely this would ruin the experience you would get out of taking a class in-person.

My teacher hinted all speech classes are headed in this direction, being completed online.

Although I have yet to take one, online classes are good in some aspects. Having an online class often means you complete your coursework

However, taking an online course definitely has its drawbacks. There’s not the same, if any, social interaction with other students (which is the best part about school, right?); there are days when the Internet connection just won’t cooperate; and you need to have a lot of personal motivation to actually get your online assignments turned in on time.

It makes you wonder if one day all schooling will be online instead of in a physical classroom. It seems a majority of kids nowadays have held cellphones and tablets in their hands by age 4, so perhaps an online class won’t be anything shocking for them. Perhaps it’ll be the norm for a young child to get up in the morning, grab his or her laptop and watch a few video clips to learn academic material.

When my teacher spoke to us about our speech class getting moved fully online, possibly next fall, people seemed slightly concerned. I don’t blame my teacher; I am not thrilled about the whole idea either, if I had to take that version of the class. Luckily, I took speech this semester, while it still is in-person.

Americans spend more on stuff they don’t need

By MARK WHITEHOUSE Bloomberg View What makes the U.S. economy grow? A look at consumer spending data offers a simple – if perhaps troubling – answer. Increasingly, it’s people buying stuff they don’t need.

Any effort to separate wants from needs involves subjectivity. One person’s luxury may be another’s necessity. That said, some categories of spending tracked by the Bureau of Economic Analysis – such as jewelry and restaurants – consist primarily of stuff pretty much anyone, if pressed, could do without. Such goods and services make up almost a fifth of personal consumption, or an annualized $2.3 trillion in the three months through September.

For most of the past six decades, this non essential

consumption played a secondary role in economic expansions, with spending on more important items, such as groceries and shelter taking the lead.

In the new millennium, however, the roles have switched. Since the current recovery began in mid-2009, spending on stuff people don’t need has grown at an average annualized rate of 3.3 percent (adjusted for inflation), compared with 2 percent for other stuff.

The increasing importance of non essential spending has various possible interpretations. On the bright side, it could be a sign of greater overall prosperity: If people largely have taken care of their basic needs, then the ups and downs of consumption simply might be migrating to discretionary items. Notably, in the past two recessions, spending in

non essential categories also dropped much faster than in essential ones.

Alternatively, it could reflect the increasing concentration of wealth in the hands of the rich, who naturally devote a larger share of their expenditures to luxury goods and services. Their income has become more volatile in recent decades, so perhaps their spending is doing the same, driving faster growth in non essential goods during recoveries. If so, that could mean a bumpier ride for less affluent folks.

Whatever the explanation, the message for a fragile global economy is the same: If you want it to keep growing, you’d better hope Americans keep buying stuff they don’t need.

‘What If God Wrote Your Bucket List?’

Catching up with St. Charles author Jay Payleitner

He’s worked in advertising on Michigan Avenue in Chicago, done television spots with former Chicago Bears head coach Mike Ditka for Midway Airlines and was on the design team that helped name Sun Chips for Frito-Lay, he said.

He married his high school sweetheart, current St. Charles Alderman Rita Payleitner. But through his days of long commutes to downtown Chicago from St. Charles, where Payleitner was born and raised, he decided that it wasn’t for him and returned to where he grew up, to get involved in writing and publishing.

He has now written and received help publishing 16 books, his latest of which is titled, “What If God Wrote Your Bucket List? 52 Things You Don’t Want to Miss.”

The book was released in September, and Payleitner said that it is available in most book stores, as well as on Amazon’s website, amazon.com, and his website, fathers52.com.

Many people have bucket lists – maybe not exactly ones that are written out, but most people have things that they would like to accomplish during their lifetimes, including Payleitner. The St. Charles author caught up with Kane County Chronicle reporter Chris Casey to discuss his latest book, as well as the reason some of his other books have

ballpark – if you say you’ve done all of those things, you think, wow, that’s all there is? God’s bucket list, in my humble opinion, is understanding some truths.

Every individual has value. We were not put here by accident. So, this book basically talks about personal anecdotes that lead to lessons learned and incredible truths and opportunities that God wants us to grab onto.

Chris Casey: Tell me a little about this book.

What makes it different from any other list or book about bucket lists?

Jay Payleitner: In the eyes of culture, success is owning and winning. Those are the types of things on traditional bucket lists. Those certainly aren’t bad things, but if you cross every item off your list – like swimming with dolphins, getting your Ph.D., seeing the Eiffel Tower or going to every Major League Baseball

Casey: A lot of your books have the number 52 in the titles (i.e. “52 Things Husbands Need From Their Wives,” “52 Things Sons Need From Their Dads,” etc.). Why 52?

Payleitner: That’s a good question.

Because of my experience in advertising and radio production, I learned to write short. I like to make a point and be done with it. I guess you can say I like to convey my thoughts economically ... keep them short and to the point. I can make

my point in three pages of a book. So, three pages times 52 makes a book. When you’re writing this 70,000-word novel, no way, that’s not the way to convey my point. One-thousand words can do it, and that’s where the 52 comes from. It’s hard to explain sometimes, but that’s what I follow and have stuck to.

Casey: A lot of your books also deal with family and relationships. Is there a reason for that?

Payleitner: Well, I love speaking for groups, especially fathers. It became apparent to me that the most effective fathering is done by folks who know the heavenly father and have that foundation. It’s almost like getting back to the basics, you know, putting first things first. Most of my books deal with families, marriage and relationships, but – to me – the most important relationship is with God and the plan he has for us.

The course’s locale aside, it’s anything but normal during the third weekend in October. Perpetually windy and often damp, it loomed as the final challenge of Mar-

shall’s debut season. Naturally, the Kane County Chronicle Boys Golfer of the Year kept charging and got the best of it.

Marshall placed fourth in the state with a two-day, 5-over-par 147 at Weibring, earning the highest finish for a freshman in program history and Kaneland’s best overall effort since Milo French’s runner-up showing in 2002.

er and the rest of his team considered Marshall unflappable before and after his trip downstate. Marshall swears he has nerves; you simply don’t see them.

“Honestly, everybody gets rattled. Everybody feels that on the inside,” Marshall said.

“But the way I cope with it is just from the support of my friends, my family and my coaches.”

Golf is a burgeoning bond and passion between Marshall and the men in his family – his father, John, and his older brother, Jack, a junior defensive back on the Kaneland football team.

Still “pretty hyped” after

the state tournament, Will Marshall seldom took a break from his usual regimen, heading to the Knights’ home course of Hughes Creek in Elburn or Geneva’s Mill Creek Golf Club to take some extra swings.

“Honestly, it doesn’t really feel like practice when you love the sport that much,” he said. “It’s really just going, and I feel like I’m playing out there and having some fun.”

Marshall isn’t fooling anyone with that statement. Although it took a few tournaments for him to arrive at the conclusion, Meyer, who completed his 11th season guiding the Knights, thinks Marshall

blocks potential distractions with the best.

Marshall averaged 38.1 for nine holes, narrowly off the pace of Kaneland junior No. 1 golfer Jake Hed. The Knights counted Marshall’s score in the top four in every event but one, the Rock Falls Classic on Sept. 5.

“I don’t think we’ve ever had a freshman who’s shown that level of consistency and that level of play from start to finish,” Meyer said. “He obviously really turned it on during the state tournament and played his best golf at the very end – which was good

‘MEGAN’S GAME WAS VERY STRONG’ St. Charles North freshman Furtney shines from the beginning, finishes strong

No, the St. Charles North freshman isn’t new to town.

She simply is no stranger to the regional and national junior golf circuit, either.

When she isn’t training locally – which seems like blasphemy to such a diligent player – Furtney’s offseason plans include occasional trips to Bradenton, Florida, where her coach, Tim Sheredy, operates a teaching academy.

“I definitely want to play college golf,” Furtney said.

“That’s not even a question.

It’s just kind of where I want to go and what I’m looking for in a school.”

Furtney turned 15 in September and realizes she hasn’t even completed one-eighth of her high school studies. Still, she isn’t abandoning her aspirations anytime soon.

Why should she?

A solid prep debut still ended short of her ultimate goal. Competing at the IHSA Class AA state tournament at Hickory Point Golf Club in Forsyth, she finished fifth individually with a two-day, 3-over-par 147, three shots behind champion Madasyn Pettersen of Rockford Guilford.

“Both days, Megan’s game was very strong, and the past couple weeks of the season, she was really able to dial in her irons and get her putts rolling toward the hole,” North Stars coach Irish Whalen said.

“I feel like she just executed her shots very well.”

Furtney figures she began making that her serious goal in seventh grade after first picking up a club when she was 5 or 6.

“I was kind of like, ‘Whoa.

I can actually do this. I can compete,’ ” she said. “And that kind of just kicked in to my competitive side of things, considering in my whole family, we’re really competitive.

So it just naturally kind of kicked in for me.”

Joining the North Stars merely kept those juices flowing. North finished 11th as a team in AA last fall behind program stalwarts Gianna Furrie and Kate Lillie, juniors who welcomed an infusion of talented freshmen in Sarah Arnold, Emma Hayes and Furtney in 2015.

North improved to fourth place this season, with Furtney averaging a team-best 37.5

for nine-hole events and 73.5 for 18. Lillie (38.4 and 76.4) followed in both categories, while Furrie, the KCC Player of the Year in 2013 and 2014, was next at 39.2 and 79.6, respectively.

The North Stars opened the season with a 299 at their first invitational. Along the way, they established a new school record for a nine-hole dual with a 151 against Wheaton North at Pottawatomie.

That score helped vault North throughout the stretch run. Lillie and Furtney both shot 74s to lead North to an Upstate Eight Conference River Division title at St. Andrews in West Chicago earlier that week, giving way to regional and sectional team titles.

at the Burlington Central Regional at Sycamore Golf Club.

On Oct. 12, however, she did one better, shooting a 3-under 69 at the Oak Park-River Forest Sectional at Cog Hill No. 1 in Lemont, finishing as the medalist by five strokes.

Furrie “was really pulling for” Furtney, asking for updates when she saw other teammates on the course.

Furtney, meanwhile, simply harnessed the consistency she hopes to cultivate during the offseason.

“I’m just able to hit a pretty good amount of fairways, and when I don’t, I’m able to scramble, and I know how to get out of trouble pretty well,” Furtney said. “So I think that helps kind of shave off a couple strokes. And also, just the distance I have has been able

to help me get ahead of a lot of other people.”

Furtney means her strength off the tee, not her parents’ frequent driver or flier miles. She works with a personal trainer at a favorite practice venue, Cantigny Golf in Wheaton, and is privy to the latest in college golf regimens through her cousins.

Kenzie Neisen recently completed her sophomore season at Oklahoma State.

Her older sister, Steffi Neisen, golfed at Nebraska.

Again, Furtney has no qualms about announcing her intentions to follow in their footsteps. But she’s also enthused about the team atmosphere at North, an aspect of golf she hadn’t fathomed until this season.

natural gift she has. But with Maya, it’s more repetition. We work on her all the time and don’t let her tip at practice. It may come easier for Meegan, but both get a lot of repetition at practice.”

Another GCAC school, St. Francis will look to uphold its top seed in the Class 4A East Aurora Sectional when it takes on Naperville North, which defeated No. 2 St. Charles North in three sets Tuesday.

“I mean, they’re a good team,” Huskies sophomore outside hitter Ariana Budnik said, “but if we play like we did (Tuesday) and stay sharp, we’ll hopefully get a win.”

Kaneland coach Tom Fedderly is more than familiar with Montini. When the Knights moved up to Class 6A for this year’s IHSA football playoffs, along with the unbeaten Broncos, he knew the road would go through Montini, as it often does.

Montini, the top seed in 6A this season, will host No. 9 Kaneland on Saturday in the second round of the playoffs. But Fedderly doesn’t just know how strong the Montini football program is, he also has witnessed it.

The Knights met Montini in the 2010 and 2011 Class 5A semifinals, both times when Kaneland was in the position that the Broncos enter Saturday’s matchup – unbeaten and the No. 1 seed. Montini got the better of the Knights both times.

“The road always goes through [Montini] or Joliet Catholic,” Fedderly said. “It’s just how it works. They are a fantastic program and there’s a reason they have had the success that they do. They’re very well coached and have skill at every position, and this year is no different. We have our hands full, but we’re very excited to get out there this weekend.”

After both of those matchups with Kaneland, Montini went on the win a state title.

The Broncos have been to the 5A state championship game in each of the past six seasons.

They won four of those games, but have lost the past two, both to Sacred Heart-Griffin, which also is unbeaten and the No. 2 seed in 6A this year.

“And never complains. Just an absolutely good boy. He’s gotten himself strong in the weight room. He’s probably pound-for-pound our strongest kid. At 175 pounds.”

Taormina enters Friday’s second-round game at Bradley-Bourbonnais with 244 carries for 1,456 yards and 18 rushing touchdowns this season. He also has two receiving touchdowns.

First quarter crucial for ’Dogs:

The playoffs already present a level of unknown about opponents. But after watching film and scouting and scheming, teams ideally head into matchups as best prepared as possible.

Although Batavia and coach Dennis Piron certainly are confident in their prepardeness level for Friday’s Class 7A second-round game against Simeon at Gately Stadium, there still is a higher level of unknowns than usual.

After losing its opener to East St. Louis and a Week 3 defeat at the hands of 10-0 Phillips, Simeon hasn’t played a ton of competitive, meaningful games. A Week 5 game, in which the Wolverines edged Curie, 33-21, has really been it.

Sure, Simeon comes in with a seven-game winning streak, but Piron knows his team will provide a test unlike many the Wolverines have seen.

“This game will be the first legitimate game they have played in some time,” Piron said. “But it also makes it difficult to gauge a lot of things about them on film. They have taken care of their business, so you give them credit there, but it’s hard to see too much.

“We have used film from last year and have assumed they will do many similar things, but the first quarter will obviously be very critical to come out and make the necessary adjustments to shut down what they want to do.”

Former pool rivals ‘just doing college’ at UIC Cats and dogs living together.

Turns out a high school rivalry can melt away pretty quickly when former St. Charles North North Stars and former St. Charles East Saints team up in the college ranks. Nick Kowaleski and Shaun Seuschek used to go head to head as high schoolers, but now the two are teammates – and roommates – with the Illinois-Chicago men’s swimming team.

Kowaleski, a former North Star, and Seuschek, a former Saint, never competed in the same event in high school, but they remember squaring off as members of rival teams. Now they have the same goal: Delivering strong performances for the Flames.

“Nick, he’s one year younger than me, but I swam against him for three years,” said Seuschek, a senior. “It was kind of cool to come back into college and see him again after I transferred into UIC. Back when we were in high school, he was at North and I was at East, and it was always a big meet when we would swim against each other.”

Seuschek transferred in ahead of last season after two years at Colorado Mesa University. Seeing a familiar face was helpful in his transition.

“It was a lot easier to

ON CAMPUS Vinnie Duber make friends when you’re living with your teammates and you’re always with them, pretty much bonding with them 24-7,” he said. “It was an easy transition.

“It was just easier to hang around. If you’re hanging with people you don’t really know at all, it’s kind of hard to talk interests. We’re basically all swimmers, so you usually talk swimming stuff, but it was nice to have people that I knew that I could talk with and already have some background with.”

In the pool, things are going well. Both Kowaleski and Seuschek had good things to say about how their seasons are going after an offseason of work.

Kowaleski competes in the 50-,100- and 200-meter freestyle, while Seuschek competes in the 100 and 200 breaststroke as well as the 100 butterfly and 200 individual medley.

“I knew that we were going to have a young team coming in. We lost a couple of seniors that were pretty strong at the conference level,” Kowaleski said. “So I guess one of my biggest goals was to fill that place and hopefully become a role

“So far, I’m doing really, really well compared to last year,” Seuschek said. “This summer, I actually lifted weights a lot more, so that kind of helped me with my strength coming into this season. Also, just staying in the water was a big portion of what kept me in shape this summer, swimming in the mornings, whether it was the mornings or the afternoons, just keep moving around, trying to stay healthy with what I eat.”

Speaking of eating, Seuschek said the guys do a lot of cooking at their apartment, whipping up delicacies such as omelettes and pork shoulders.

But it wouldn’t be the college life without hunting for free food, either.

“We actually cook a lot,” Seuschek said. “We eat a whole bunch. Every morning, we’re doing breakfast, we make a big omelette, we split it. And then we make oatmeal, and then we watch ‘Mad Men’ or other shows on TV. We eat a lot and watch a lot of TV. “We’ve actually been into getting big pork shoulders from Costco and cooking those up. Every Sunday, we try to go to Costco and try to get as many free samples as we can while we’re shopping.”

But there are plenty of other activities outside the pool for the two roommates that don’t have to do with food.

“We do a lot of stuff. When you’re in the city, there’s a lot to do,” Kowaleski said.

“It’s really exciting to go downtown, seeing the parks, Grant Park, Lincoln Park, we just go down. We had a team scavenger hunt the other weekend, which was pretty exciting, team bonding and whatnot. But Shaun and I, we hang out around the apartment, sometimes we go to the park and toss a ball around.

“Just doing college.”

Hed won the Kaneland Regional at Hughes Creek with a 74, while Marshall tied for second on the team with a 78.

A blow-up hole on No. 16 at the Freeport Sectional a week later ultimately cost Hed a shot at repeat medalist honors and a state berth. Marshall remained steady with a 78, two shots behind the leader and one ahead of Knights junior Brett Glennon, who joined

him in Normal.

Thanks to his brother, Marshall had golfed with several of the team’s Class of 2017 members before high school, easing his transition entering the season and creating a natural outlet for consoling Hed and other teammates who weren’t able to channel a lengthier postseason ride.

“Will wasn’t tagged as our No. 1,” Meyer said, “but he was pretty much right there.”

Marshall, who turns 15 next week, began taking golf more seriously at age 12. A vote of confidence from his dad, who felt his son had the skill to win on the Illinois Ju-

nior Golf Association circuit, offered a boost.

Such affirmations haven’t stopped. Marshall still is steeled by a conversation his family and Meyer had in his hotel room after the opening round at Weibring. Meyer was all smiles just thinking about his pupil’s strategy and mental state.

unable to manage Weibring’s fast greens down the stretch.

“It’s an accomplishment to make it to state as it is. It’s just a feat by itself,” Marshall said.

He’s eager to make a routine of it for years to come, but first Marshall has Kaneland basketball tryouts next week, then maybe baseball in the spring.

It’s tough to fathom him succumbing to the pressure of taut free throws in the final seconds or a sharp ground ball with two outs and runners on base in a tie game.

• Artificial sphincter. The doctor inserts an artificial device that circles the anal sphincter. It keeps the anus closed until the person squeezes a control pump to open it. This allows a bowel movement to pass. Afterward, the cuff gradually closes.

• Colostomy. Colostomy usually is done as a last resort. This procedure reroutes feces from the rectum and anal canal.

Instead, feces leave the body through a surgically created opening in the abdomen.

While surgical techniques can be effective, non-surgical techniques often provide sufficient relief that surgery is not required. That’s good news, given that millions of people experience periodic or frequent fecal incontinence.

Dr. Wallace: Last month, I went to a good friend’s funeral.

She and her boyfriend were celebrating his 18th birthday and had driven to a nearby town to meet up with another couple. During the celebration, her boyfriend had more than his share of alcohol.

They were driving home when their car ran off the road and struck a tree headon. Both teens were killed instantly.

The police concluded the crash was due to alcohol and excessive speed. If our laws say the legal age to drink alcohol is 21, how can these underage teens get all they want?

I have lost a dear friend all because this young driver felt it was necessary to consume alcohol so he could feel like an adult.

When will the younger generation ever become able to control their urge to drink alcohol? – Nameless, Detroit Nameless: It is sad, but true, alcohol is readily available for those teens who choose to drink it for many different reasons, such as “to feel adult” or to “escape the

It’s difficult to teach alcohol is harmful and not acceptable when as a society we sell the stuff by the barrel.

How many teens think it’s OK to drink because they observe their parents consuming alcohol?

Although drivers younger than 21 make up only 10 percent of the motoring population, youthful drivers account for more than 25 percent of alcohol-related highway fatalities.

Alcohol-related traffic accidents are the number one killer of those aged 15 to 24.

We must never “toss in the towel” and say teenage drinking wins.

Abstaining from alcohol is a way of life, and this philosophy must be nourished in the home by wise, loving parents.

And these young people also need the support of their school, church and the entire community if they are to survive and succeed.

Dr. Wallace: I’m 18 and have

a “strawberry” birthmark on my cheek about the size of a quarter. It has always bothered me and I have wished that I could get rid of it, but it was an expensive procedure that my parents couldn’t afford when I was younger, so I just got used to it.

Now that I have a job, my insurance at work will pay part of the expense and I’ll be able to pay the rest.

My problem is that my parents and grandparents all think it would be just wasting my money to have it removed.

Dear Reader: In Wednesday’s column, I discussed non-surgical treatments for fecal incontinence. Today, I’ll discuss surgical treatment options.

When everything works properly, feces move from the colon into the rectum, which sits at the end of the digestive tract. The rectum has walls that stretch to hold the stool. Two circular muscles are present in the last inch of the rectum, or anal canal. The internal anal sphincter, which is not under your conscious control, is squeezed shut most of the time to prevent leakage. The external anal sphincter, which you do control, surrounds the internal anal sphincter. I’ve put an illustration on my website, www.askdoctork. com.

Nerves tell your brain when your rectum is full.

That tends to loosen your internal sphincter. It also sends a message to your brain: “If you don’t do something, you’re going to have a bowel movement.” If you choose to delay a bowel movement, your brain sends signals that tighten the external anal sphincter, and holds feces inside.

You also tighten a second muscle that loops around the rectum, and holds in the stool.

If things aren’t working properly, you may need surgery to fix the problem. The procedure will vary based on what is causing your symptoms.

Procedures can involve the following: • Bulking agents. Bulking agents are injected into the anal canal to keep it closed. The procedure is simple and is usually done in an office setting. But its effectiveness, particularly over the long term, has not met expectations. So I’ll say no more.

• Sacral nerve stimulation (SNS). In this minimally invasive surgery, the surgeon inserts a kind of pacemaker. It provides continuous electric stimulation to the muscles of the pelvic floor, and thereby

“Tiny houses exist in sort of a legal gray area, neither explicitly allowed nor expressly forbidden,” said tiny-home owner Jay Austin of Washington.

Though the District of Columbia recently banned “camping” in tiny-house-like structures, Austin said he has been told the provision is unenforceable.

America is having a big love affair with tiny houses. There are television shows: “Tiny House Nation” and “Tiny House Hunters.” There are movies: “Tiny: A Story About Living Small” and “Small Is Beautiful: A Tiny House Documentary.” Pinterest has more than 900 boards devoted to tiny houses, and design website Houzz showcases thousands of tiny-house photos.

“Many Houzz readers have been fascinated by the idea of a portable home they can pay off quickly and personalize down to the smallest detail,” editor Sheila Schmitz said. And you know a concept has arrived when “Portlandia” skewers it: Check out the “Microhouse” episode.

Why are Americans, whose homes average about 2,200

square feet, so obsessed with tiny homes? Perhaps they are responding to the benefits tiny-house owners cite: financial and emotional freedom, a greener lifestyle, the satisfaction of building one’s own refuge.

The phrase “’tiny house” put a name to the movement that was already there,” said Thom Stanton, a tiny-home builder in West Virginia.

Stanton said two groups are fueling the movement: millennials, because their college loans have put traditional houses out of reach, and retiring baby boomers looking for affordable homes with minimal maintenance. Meanwhile, traditional homeowners are contributing to the trend by building tiny houses on their properties to shelter guests, family members or caregivers, or putting them on vacation land.

the land where the house now sits. Instead of the freedom he sought, he now has some degree of responsibility as a property owner. As the only one of his friends who owns a place, he often hosts cookouts and gatherings around his fire pit.

His cabin-like house has a gable metal roof and is clad in western red cedar. The door opens to a spacious living area filled with a refurbished love seat. The other end has an L-shaped kitchen and bathroom tucked under the loft. Including the trailer, it cost about $20,000.

His parents insisted he include a flushing toilet rather than a composting one because they feared he’d never be able to find a girlfriend otherwise.

(Since then, Riedel has decided to become a priest; he will attend seminary at Catholic University this fall.)

Even the tiny-house movement can include the desire for more. “There’s a bit of pressure to build niftier, cuter, tinier, bigger, more cleverly, more artistically, etc.,” he said, which is something he’s had to fight against.

Pasadena, Md., residents Greg and Renee Cantori have had a tiny house parked to the side of their 1,400-square-foot 1970s ranch home for three years, awaiting their retirement.

The Cantoris, who believe in collecting life experiences rather than material things, have had long careers in the nonprofit sector. Greg, 55, has been bike commuting on and off for 30 years, cycling 50 miles round trip for his job in Baltimore.

So it’s not surprising the couple chose a post-career tiny-house lifestyle. “We will be doing things that we enjoy and spending time together doing it,” he said.

A tiny house “becomes your launchpad,” said Raleigh, N.C., architect Sarah Susanka, author of the “Not So Big House”series who promotes building homes that are small but higher quality. “It’s a lot easier to live in a tiny house when you’re in a beautiful place,” she said. “A version of this is the micro units in cities where the city itself becomes your living room and dining room.”

Many retirees travel the country in RVs, he said, but a tiny house “feels like a real house.” The cottage-like blue house with white trim is a lightfilled space with dormers and beadboard ceilings and walls. It has a large loft that fits a queensize bed and a smaller loft for a twin; Cantori split a stepladder in half to create rungs for each loft of the 238-square-foot home.

On the main level, the house has a sitting area, kitchen and bathroom. The house has a shower/ composting toilet on the far end.

They want to buy solar panels and a rain collection system.

The Cantoris bought the $19,500 house three years ago in preparation for the retirement plan, but also because they needed a guesthouse and office.

Though affordability was one reason he wanted to build a tiny house in 2012 (it cost about $50,000 including materials and labor), there was an “element of financial freedom I didn’t expect,” he said.

Austin spent six months making weekly trips to Goodwill to downsize from his 700-square-foot studio. “Driving away felt for a few minutes like panic. That panic subsided after a few miles, then it felt really freeing.” By the time he was done downsizing, it took only a few trips on his bicycle to move in.

“There is a trend in tiny-house design in which everything becomes miniaturized. I was more interested in a space that was small but not scaled down,” Austin said. He prioritized the kitchen counter over clothing storage, extending the plywood countertop into the space that originally was going to be a 4-foot closet.

Natural light was also important to Austin. “I put in five big windows and a huge skylight over the loft. I didn’t want the house to feel tiny,” he said.

The rustic and industrial house has charred western red cedar siding installed on the vertical. The small living room has bench seating on both sides with storage underneath. The kitchen countertop is butcher block with a matching table across the aisle. He stores his bicycle on brackets above a window.
