Friends ready to ‘Give Back to Pat’ Events set to benefit ‘Purple Store’ owner, who has breast cancer KANELAND CONNECTION Al Lagattolla KANEVILLE – If Pat Hill knew a customer needed an item she didn’t carry at Hill’s Country Store, friends said she would be quick to make sure that item was at the Kaneville store as soon as possible.

Lynette Werdin, a longtime member of the Kaneville Township Historical Society, said if a customer needed the item badly enough and Hill had something at home that would help, Hill would go home to find the object and bring it to what’s also known as the “Purple Store.”

“She’s done so many good things,” Werdin said.

Werdin said fellow residents are ready to give back, now that Hill is in need. Hill, who is Kaneville’s village president, revealed in a Facebook post last month that she has “stage 4 breast cancer, as well as in my liver and bones.”

“I am really trying to be strong,” Hill wrote. “Please pray for me and my family. I would appreciate all of your thoughts and prayers for me to overcome this. Thank you

all for being so kind to me.”

Since, at least two events have been scheduled to benefit Hill.

Annette Theobald, owner of Paisano’s and a Kaneville resident, said there had been “an outpouring of folks wanting to help in any way possible.” She and Werdin

noted Hill has donated and helped with many raffles, fundraisers and events.

Another longtime friend, Sycamore resident Lee Newtson, said he “will have the honor of working the door” at the Fishermen’s Inn event. He said Hill is “always doing something for somebody.”

Newtson said he goes on trips to help victims of disasters, such as tornadoes, and Hill will pack Newtson’s vehicle with items for those who need help. Then, she’d also pack him food and drinks for the trip. She said Hill also would help raise funds, and on one memorable trip, Newtson said Hill had helped raise funds for two families, and he ended up bringing two checks for $1,025.

“Pat was always there to help,” he said, adding “she just seemed like she couldn’t do enough to help these people out. … It’s unbelievable the things she has done for some people.”

On Tuesday, Hill added a new Facebook post, in which she thanked “everybody who has been so supportive to me and my family with your outpouring of love and prayers.” She said she appreciated meals, gifts, flowers and donations.

Swan returns to Elburn Village Board Former trustee to serve remainder of Hastert’s term

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – Looking to fill a vacancy on the Elburn Village Board, Village President Dave Anderson turned to a familiar face.

Craig E. Swan, 70, who previously spent more than

a decade on the board, was sworn in at Monday night’s meeting. The move was u n a n i m o u s - Craig E. Swan ly backed by trustees. He replaces Ethan

Hastert, who resigned from the board last month because he is moving to Campton Hills.

“If there is any way I can help my village, I want to do it,” Swan said after taking his seat on the board.

Swan was elected to the Elburn Village Board in 1996,

and he then was re-elected twice. He did not run for re-election in 2009.

Anderson said he heard from three residents who were interested in the open seat, but because the seat is up for election in April, he said it would “behoove us if we appointed a former trustee.”

Anderson said he did not want to give one of the other candidates “a head start.” Af-

ter the meeting, Swan said he does not plan to run in April.

“I don’t think you should ever slam doors, but at this point, I don’t,” Swan said.

Swan said he was “pleased to be back in this seat.” He said it was “an exciting time for the town and an exciting time to be on the board.” He participated in the board’s discussions and votes during the evening.

COVER STORY Kramer claims win for county sheriff over Mayes

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com Republican Donald Kramer of Geneva won the hardfought race for Kane County sheriff Tuesday, with 72,480 votes – which was more than the 42,382 votes earned by his Democratic rival, Willie Mayes of Aurora, according to unofficial results.

“We pledged to run the best campaign we could, to put forth our ideas and let the voters decide,” Kramer said in his victory speech at Aurelio’s Pizza in Geneva.

“So tonight, the voters sent a clear message what direction they want the sheriff’s office to go forward,” Kramer said. “To those of you who have worked so hard – knocking on doors, passing out literature, calling

friends, visiting neighbors and supporting our fundraisers – I can’t thank you enough. You’re the team.”

Speaking from the Holiday Inn in Aurora, Mayes offered similar sentiments in conceding the election.

“We put forth the best campaign we could,” Mayes said. “We have seen the totals, and the voters have spoken.”

Kramer, 56, retired after 30 years at the sheriff’s office.

Mayes, 52, has 28 years of experience – 22 at the sheriff’s office, and he still is working there. Both achieved the rank of lieutenant.

Both men have extensive education and experience, and both had fathers in law enforcement. Mayes said his father was the first African-American officer in Au-

rora.

At times, the comments between the two were sharp.

Kramer returned fire that Mayes was only a lieutenant because Kane County Sheriff Pat Perez wanted to position him to run for sheriff – not because he was qualified.

Mayes criticized Kramer that he was hired and promoted by his father, George Kramer, when he was sheriff, while Mayes had earned his promotions.

Burd said she wanted to give voters a choice, and said: “I did that, either way it’s resolved. … It’s really sad when you have only one candidate to choose from.”

“When I got into this, everybody said there was no way I could win,” she said.

Burd, the former mayor of Yorkville, said the experience was “a lot different compared to running for municipal elec-

tions.”

“It’s a huge area,” Burd said. “I really put my heart into it. I went out knocking on doors. … We fought a good fight. I made a lot of friends and talked to a lot of people.”

Of Wheeler, a small business owner who will be serving in his first elected office, Burd said, “I hope he does well.”

Burd said she plans to stay active and fight to make a difference. But she said she does

not believe she will participate in another election.

“I don’t think I will run again for any office,” Burd said. “I doubt I would ever do this again.”

Wheeler won in the Republican primary in March, dominating a race against three other candidates – Julie Cosimo, Beth Goncher and Bill Keck. In the primary, Wheeler earned more votes than the total combined from his three opponents.

A referendum question asked about 3,000 voters in the Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District whether they wanted to disconnect and

transfer to the Fox River and Countryside Fire/Rescue District.

Voters answered with a resounding no – 1,292 to 443, with all seven precincts reporting.

“I’m glad to see that the voters had a chance to vote on this, and they decided to keep the department that has been providing them with quality service for many years,” Elburn Fire Chief Kelly Cal-

“It’s been a long process – since July – when all of this was announced, and I want to apologize to all the citizens and residents in our district that this even had to take place. I don’t believe it was called for.”

Residents in the proposed disconnect area had petitioned to get the question on the ballot.

Oberweis concedes race to Durbin

About 10:40 p.m. Durbin led with more than 1.5 million votes, compared to Oberweis’ 1.2 million votes, according to unofficial election results statewide.

Durbin on social media thanked voters for their support and wrote that he was honored to be their senator for another six years.

U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee early Tuesday evening released

a statement congratulating Durbin on his victory against Oberweis.

No one fights harder for Illinois and America’s working families than Durbin, wrote Bennett, who is chairman of the committee.

Oberweis thanked his family and volunteers during his concession speech at Oberweis Dairy & That Burger Joint in Glen Ellyn. He said he called Durbin to congratulate him on the election and told the crowd they did what they could to hold him accountable in the race.

Joining Durbin and Oberweis in the Senate race was Sharon Hansen, a Libertarian candidate. At about 10:40 p.m. she had about 107,500 votes statewide.

Voters Tuesday night soundly defeated Batavia School District 101’s $15 million capital improvement referendum.

According to unofficial results from Kane County and the Aurora Election Commission, 3,027 residents voted “yes” and 8,400 voted “no.”

“We are glad the public cared enough about the district to show up and vote, and we are glad the school board cared enough to ask the question,” Batavia School Superintendent

Lisa Hichens said in a statement. “BPS101 Board members put the alternate bond question on the ballot specifically to get direction from the public on capital improvement projects going forward.

Today, voters gave us their opinion through a majority ‘no’ vote, and we will honor that by continuing to fund capital projects through the district’s annual $1.5 million operations and maintenance budget. Projects will be done in phases, and some will take several years to complete.”

Roskam rolls to 5th term in U.S. House

Leading by wide margins in the polls all night, Roskam said his priorities will be on righting the nation’s economy once he returns to Washington, D.C., to represent the 6th Congressional District for another two years. The work on

the economy starts with a reformed tax code, energy independence and business-friendly regulations, he said.

“I’m going to Washington, D.C., to be a part of the solution,” Roskam said. “A competitive tax code, regulatory reform and independent energy policies are all the foundations that you can build a strong economy around.”

Roskam, a Wheaton attorney, celebrated his re-election victory with supporters at the Arrowhead Golf Course in Wheaton after Mason, a Democrat from Naperville, conced-

ed nearly 90 minutes after the polls closed Tuesday.

A strong incumbent with House GOP leadership experience, Roskam maintained a convincing lead as results trickled-in across the 6th Congressional District, from southern McHenry County to northwestern Cook County.

Hultgren tops Anderson in 14th Congressional District race

Anderson previously lost to Hultgren during the 2012 general election.

Hultgren, in a statement released Tuesday evening, thanked his family for supporting him while he is in office.

He also thanked others who helped with his campaign.

In Kane County results, Rauner and his lieutenant governor candidate, Evelyn Sanguinetti, dominated the unofficial totals, gaining

66,816 votes, or 62.9 percent, with all 228 precincts reporting.

Quinn and his lieutenant governor candidate, Paul Vallas, received 35,532 votes, or 33.4 percent, of the Kane County unofficial totals.

Libertarian candidate Chad Grimm and his lieutenant governor candidate, Alexander Cummings, received

2,583 votes, or 2.4 percent, of the Kane County unofficial totals.

Unofficial vote totals from the Aurora Election Commission told a different story.

With 70 of 73 precincts reporting, Quinn had 8,419 votes, or 52 percent. Rauner had 44.5 percent of the vote, and Grimm was receiving 3.2 percent of the vote.

OBITUARIES DANNY VAN TASSEL Danny Van Tassel, age 64, of Genoa, formerly St. Charles, passed away November 3, 2014, at his home.

He was born to George and Margaret Van Tassel in Union City, PA. He graduated from St. Charles H.S. in 1968. He was a member of the American Legion, VFW, and a Member of the Loyal Order of The Moose. Danny worked for the United States Post Office retiring from the South Elgin Office in 2005. He was an avid bowler, along with playing rolle bolle at Ray’s Evergreen Tavern. Danny will be most remembered for being a die-hard Cubs Fan “There is always next year, Go Cubs!”

He is survived by his two daughters, Jennifer (Brian) Hall, Shannon Van Tassel (Ed Rowland); four grand-children, Randall Glazier Jr., Matthew Hall, Michael Yankle Jr., Mikayla Rowland; one sister, Patti Heathershaw; and two nieces, Wendy (Justin) Abernathy, Lori (Cole) Hodges.

Real climate-change test is moving from words to deeds BLOOMBERG NEWS The latest United Nations report on climate change is a collection of previously published findings and grimly familiar statistics. Nonetheless, it raises anew a crucial question: How can we move from admonition to action?

The planet is warming, says the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Human activity is the dominant cause; the consequences of failing to change this trend will eventually be dire; the costs of addressing the danger aren’t great. All this was known. Doing something about it – that’s the hard part, and where most politicians, especially in the United States, are failing.

The timidity of governments has overtaxed the IPCC and made it ineffective. The panel’s synthesis of the science is indispensable and authoritative, but the IPCC is poorly equipped to carry the political burden of changing policy.

Expecting the IPCC to play such a prominent role has shifted attention from common-sense precautions to the impossible quest for scientific certainty. The case for affordable policies to reduce climate change doesn’t require scientific certainty; it’s a matter of prudently insuring against risk. Choosing the precautions that strike the best balance between costs and benefits while spreading the burden fairly is fundamentally a political task.

Rather than dwelling on scenarios of planetary disaster that put distant generations in jeopardy, policymakers ought to look harder for low-cost actions that make sense – and are seen to make sense – immediately.

Shifting from coal-fired power generation to renewable sources of energy, for instance, reduces emissions of particulates as well as carbon, with fast-acting health benefits.

Supporting research into cheap solar power and complementary battery technologies would advance other kinds of profitable innovation, as well as curb greenhouse gases.

Many humdrum carbon-reducing technologies already make economic sense regardless of climate change, because they save money. Such opportunities should be encouraged and exploited wherever possible.

Consumers can play their part by voting with their paychecks – spending on fuel-efficient cars, for example, or more effective home insulation. Businesses can invest the same way. In many industries, they’ve already started. Cities can take the initiative, too – the more that do, the better.

Taken together, all this can go a long way. Yet there is no substitute for a national and even global strategy.

Long-lived investments have to be planned years ahead.

A guiding framework for longer-term policy is needed as well, which is where carbon taxes come in. The carbon-tax approach gives producers a clearer idea of what to expect.

The result would be smarter investment and, other things being equal, faster growth. In addition, smart international coordination (which effective climate policy requires) would be easier.

Governments shouldn’t need yet another new IPCC report to get them to change their policies. The science may not be settled, but it’s clear enough to warrant action, and it has been for years. The deficit now is in political leadership.

kdruley@shawmedia.com BARTLETT – St. Charles East girls volleyball players shouted and embraced one another indiscriminately once Tuesday’s second IHSA Class 4A Bartlett Sectional semifinal ended.

A similar brand of “whatever works” steered the Saints to a 25-22, 20-25, 25-20 victory against Glenbard West.

“Everyone was scrambling for balls, and we knew collectively as a team just to believe and we could do it,” Saints senior middle hitter Mikaela Mosquera said. “Coach (Jennie) Kull told us before, ‘Just believe and we’ll get the job done together.’ ” Now comes the ultimate task for the 30-8 Saints: defeat top-seeded Benet for the first time in four tries in Thursday’s sectional final.

“We’re just going to try to forget about the past three games against them, because we’re a whole new team than we were at the beginning,” East senior libero Anne Hughes said.

Glenbard West coach Pete Mastandrea called the defeat the wrong end of “a game of inches” for the second-seeded Hilltoppers (30-8).

To be sure, the match swayed toward either side throughout the night, with Glenbard West touting Duke-bound outside hitter Natalie Schilling and East answering with its own stable of NCAA Division I recruits.

As leads came and went, No. 3 seed East often returned to the comfort of serving to zone four, the Hilltoppers’ left front. If that strategy didn’t produce aces – Mosquera had three, while Hughes had

“Coach Kull gave us the zones to serve,” Hughes said. “We all just do what she tells us to do, and we trust our coaches with what they’re doing.”

completely engulf them moments after the match ended. With many East backers dressed in fashionably late Halloween costumes – Gumby and Superman among them – Kull and Bui dashed underneath a celebratory, arms-extended receiving line.

Kull and the Saints credited the fans’ depth along with their own. Sophomore

outside Kyla Augustine paced East with 10 kills, three more than Megan Schildmeyer. Avery Macklin’s powerful, left-handed swing also showed up in key spots, namely at the end of the first set.

East raced to leads of 4-0 and 6-2 in the third set before Glenbard West rallied to tie the score at 10-all. Each time, the Saints seemed to find an answer, and it rarely was the same.

“Here’s the thing: every game, it’s someone else,” Kull said. “I think, ‘OK, you can scout us all you want, but somebody else comes on in another game. …

It’s just everybody.’ Everybody is needed at some point during the season. I think that’s what’s been so special, and that’s why we don’t want this to end, because it is a really special group. They all really help each other out.”

Hughes (26 digs) and Chloe Rojas (15) sparked East’s defense and helped get the ball to Schildmeyer and Morgan Kull, who contributed 15 and 14 assists, respectively. Mosquera added seven blocks and seven digs.

Shortly after the crowd dispersed, Mosquera found Benet middle Rachael Fara, a Northwestern recruit and her Sports Performance club teammate.

They, too, shared a smile, but Mosquera wasn’t averse to talking strategy moments later.

“We’ll just have to stack up on her and adjust to her,” Mosquera said.

“They have some good outsides and a great defense. It should be a fun game.”

Benet bulldozes through Tri-Cities teams

At least one Redwing offered the ultimate praise to Geneva – the latest in that number – upon Benet’s 25-17, 22-25, 25-16 victory in the opening Class 4A Bartlett Sectional semifinal.

“A lot of these teams are very good, and deserve a regional or sectional title, and they aren’t getting the chance,” Benet senior middle Rachael Fara said.

No question this sectional is loaded, leaving Geneva (308) feeling at least some contentment about pushing the top seed to the brink.

“Benet just fought back a little harder, but we played with heart,” Vikings senior middle Maddie Courter said.

“I’m really proud of us.”

The Redwings (37-1) earned their first victory of the season against Geneva after scoring their second wins against Batavia and St. Charles North, respectively, at last week’s Neuqua Valley Regional.

At 6 p.m. Thursday, Benet will aim to beat St. Charles East for the fourth time in 2014 when the teams meet in the sectional final. The Saints pushed the Redwings to three games in last month’s Mizuno Cup. Fourth-seeded Geneva followed suit Tuesday behind its usual suspects. Although the Vikings’ passing struggled in spots, sophomore outside hitters Grace Loberg (13 kills) and Ally Barrett (seven) provided plenty for the Redwings to sweat about when the Vikings were on.

Wicinski (28 digs) and setter Megan Cameron (15 assists, 10 digs) also kept the team afloat with solid swan songs.

“To come back after that first set and compete the way we did and take a set from them, it shows a lot of character that they didn’t kind of roll over,” Vikings coach Annie Seitelman said. “They weren’t intimidated. They rose to the occasion.”

Benet shrugged off Loberg’s fast start in the first set, turning an early, 2-all tie into a 12-5 edge thanks to a deep attack led by Dana Griffin (11 kills) and Veronica Snelling (10).

Loberg (kill) and Barrett (block) shined again at the start of the second set, and Geneva ultimately pulled through even as the Redwings kept nipping at a 15-9 Geneva lead.

“We just had great energy and we just had a really positive attitude, so that really contributed,” Courter said.

The Redwings ultimately channeled their own mojo in their bid for a fourth straight sectional title. The Vikings claimed the program’s first sectional last season. Benet scored the first three points of the third set and kept Geneva at bay down the stretch.

“We kind of, sort of took a game off, which is not typical of Benet volleyball at all,” Fara said. “So that served as a reminder that we need to go at it every single game we ever play … every single point.”

Mikayla Lanasa had 17 assists for Geneva, while Loberg added eight digs.

The Vikings returned much of their firepower from the 2013 team that nabbed the program’s first sectional title.

“It’s been an awesome run,” Courter said. “I’m really happy that I was a part of it. I love all my teammates.

They’re really supportive, and I hope they can keep the tradition going.”

We didn’t play our best, but I think she’s kind of the glue that keeps us

Marian Central (24-14) led by as many as 11 points four times during the third set before closing out the match at 25-15.

“We have a lot of weapons that we could use, matchup-wise, against Rosary’s front row,” Marian coach Laura Watling said. “I thought Rosary played phenomenal defense.

They played really scrappy, so it was challenging. We had to figure out some new ways to get kills against them.”

Marian was led by Sydney Nemtuda (11 kills), Rachel Giustino (nine kills) and Alex Kaufmann (15 digs).

Sophomore libero Martha Konovodoff piled up 29 digs for

the Royals while fellow sophomores Erin Burke (team-high 10 kills) and Hart (five kills, three blocks) also loomed large for an up-and-coming Royals team.

“Growing together as a team, each year we’ll get better and better,” said Hart, a St. Charles resident.

Junior setter Brooklyn Martner added 12 assists for Rosary, which fell apart in Game 1 after taking an early, 5-4 lead.

The Royals and Hurricanes had not met this season after previously sharing the Suburban Christian Conference.

“I thought it was kind of nice and fitting that we got to finally play them,” Watling said.

Dixon upends Burlington Central for sectional upset ROCHELLE – The Burlington Central girls volleyball team entered Tuesday’s Class 3A Rochelle Sectional semifinal against Dixon having won more than twice as many matches this season as the Duchesses.

Central was a major favorite to advance, but the Rockets played as if that burden weighed them down.

Dixon shocked Central, 18-25, 25-20, 25-22, to advance to Thursday’s sectional final against Marian Central.

Rockets coach Marv Leavitt acknowledged the stakes likely factored into an uncharacteristically mistake-prone night for the Rockets (31-7).

“Absolutely,” Leavitt said.

“With a senior group, they were feeling some pressure that they were the favorite, and it shouldn’t be this close.

The other team was just playing loose and ready to play.”

That other team – Dixon – improved to 16-18 on the season after playing “the match of our lives,” according to Duchesses coach Bunyan Cocar. Cocar said the Duchesses appeared to feed off an ener-

gized crowd, especially in the decisive third set.

“I have some young girls in there, and they need some positive energy,” Cocar said.

“I’m actually glad they made us switch sides after the second game so that we were serving in front of our fans. I think that helped us a lot.”

Leavitt said Central committed about 40 unforced errors in the match and also considered the Rockets’ serv-

ing weaker than usual.

“Serving has been a key part of our game all year,” Leavitt said. “Their libero’s a great passer and kept them in a lot of long rallies, and we were never able to get on one of our service runs which has been so typical of our team all year.”

An upset seemed especially unlikely after Central largely controlled the first set, which ended with consecutive aces

By DEREK WOLFF editorial@kcchronicle.com ROMEOVILLE – A season ago, Jacob Kapitaniuk could only sit and watch as Wheaton Academy’s boys soccer team was knocked off by Rochester in the third-place game of the Class 2A tournament while he dealt with an ACL injury.

What a difference a year makes.

The man his teammates affectionately call “Kappy” sent Wheaton Academy back to the state semifinals with a 98th minute strike in the second overtime period to defeat Peoria Notre Dame, 3-2, in Tuesday night’s 2A supersectional matchup at Lewis University.

With the two sides just 1 minute and 5 seconds away from a penalty kick shootout, senior midfielder Jha’Lon Johnson took a ball from outside back Parker Setran up the right blank before finding Kapitaniuk open in the middle of the 18.

Kapitaniuk took the cross and beat Peoria Notre Dame goalkeeper J.R. DeRose near post for the game winner.

“Jha’Lon Johnson settled it, saw me in the middle and I took a quick touch,” Kapitaniuk said. “I finished it. I take every shot with confidence; you have to know what you’re doing before you get the ball.”

Johnson said the pair trusted the play to work after pulling it off in the past.

“We’ve gone through this play many times in practice and in a game before, and I know he can hit it so I just saw him wide open and gave it to him,” John-

son said. “I let him do what he does best.”

Wheaton Academy advances to Friday’s 1 p.m. state semifinal against Springfield at Hoffman Estates.

Even with the late lead, Wheaton Academy still needed to close out the game. It would need to do it facing the exact same scenario it had at the end of regulation; a one-goal lead with a minute to play.

That proved difficult the first time around, as Peoria Notre Dame (16-5-4) rallied in the final minute to tie the game at 2-2 with 26.6 seconds remaining.

Junior midfielder Tommy Driscoll took a pass from Cullen Kuntzman up the right side of the 18 and finished with a fantastic strike from 12 yards out that went upper-90 on the far corner before celebrating emphatically in front of the elated Irish support section.

But the Warriors wouldn’t be deterred by the late equalizer.

Wheaton Academy (23-1-1) had outshot the Irish, 17-9, heading into the first overtime period and continued to get chances before Kapitaniuk’s fatal strike.

Warriors coach Jeff Brooke said his team rallied after Driscoll’s goal and knew it could still accomplish the task at hand.

“The kid [Driscoll] hit a great shot,” Brooke said.

Peoria Notre Dame led, 1-0, at halftime in a first half that was dominated by Wheaton Academy, which outshot the Irish, 7-2, after squandering plenty of chances.

The Irish earned a free kick in the 11th minute from 40 yards

out, and with the ball going against the wind the booming cross found Kuntzman in the 18 after sloppy play at the goal line.

Kuntzman’s shot was stopped by Setran’s body on the goal line, but the rebound came right back to the Irish midfielder, who buried the second chance with a header.

Wheaton Academy continued to look for the equalizer and got it from Johnson on a penalty kick in the 56th minute.

Six minutes later, the Warriors took their first lead on the night on a strange play.

Midfielder Lucas Hoepner fed the ball to forward Ty Seager, whose cross found Reid Culberson in the box. Culberson’s shot hit the crossbar and deflected straight down, with the officials ruling it crossed the goal line.

The goal incensed the Irish, who looked to equalize down the stretch in regulation and nearly got level a minute before the game-tying-goal from Driscoll.

Driscoll unleashed a shot in the box that was deflected by Warriors goalkeeper Drew Sezonov, with Irish midfielder Grady Schliepsiek sailing the rebound high and wide.

The ensuing drama of the late equalizer and the elation of the game-winner in OT was a whirlwind of emotions, but the victory gives the team another chance to capture a state championship, Johnson said.

“We finally get the opportunity to go back down to state and actually get the job done this year,” Johnson said. “This whole night was just a range of emotions. At one point, I thought I might cry.”

champions last year for a reason, and I think they should go very far again.”

Legacy Performance has its own weight room at its Tyler Road facility and shares turf space with Kane County Dugout. Biel said he’s basically “a one-man show” for now, but suggested former Geneva football teammates Sean Grady (now an assistant coach at Geneva’s sophomore level) and Michael Ratay (wrapping up his college career at Grand Valley State) could become involved going forward.

Biel acknowledged going into business for himself requires some bravado but said family and friends have been supportive.

“They helped me paint and structure out my gym with me so it’s been quite a ride,” Biel said. “Football and all the adversity in life have allowed me to be very confident in what I do but to take that step forward of opening up your own company, I didn’t think it was going to be extremely hard to do, but obviously, there are always going to be days you have to learn as you go and learn from other people as well.”

Bryce Biel is proud of his new gymnasium, but the former Geneva football standout said his sports training business is more about mindset than equipment.

Biel, who opened Legacy Performance gym in St. Charles on Saturday, thinks he can find his niche in the competitive Tri-Cities sports training landscape by connecting with athletes on a psychological level in addition to lending strength, speed and agility training expertise.

“Everyone does a really good job at what they do but it’s creating an atmosphere and facility where the kids want to learn and embrace [the goal] of making their own legacy, whether it’s in high school or college or 20 years down the line, creating a legacy that will always be known,” Biel said.

“With everyone else in the area, it is really finding your niche. I’m in a primarily baseball and softball facility. That’s a really large aspect of my clientele right now. I want it Bryce Biel to be able to be diverse, but baseball and softball are a very large part of my clientele right now.”

Biel was a senior offensive lineman on the 2008 Geneva football team that advanced to the IHSA Class 7A state championship game, falling to East St. Louis. He played college football at Millikin, but a knee injury ended his playing career, leading him to Elmhurst College, where he graduated with a degree in exercise science and became a student assistant football coach.

Since graduating from Elmhurst in December 2013, Biel has worked in a couple capacities, including as an assistant strength coach at Northwestern. Biel credits his time under decorated Northwestern strength and conditioning coach Allan Johnson, a 2003 inductee into the Strength and Conditioning Coaches Hall of Fame with helping shape his training strategies.

Her run of 17:02, good for second overall, helped vault the Vikings into a runner-up team finish, as well, and a spot in this week’s state meet at Peoria’s Detweiller Park. Altmayer, the St. Charles Bank & Trust-Kane County Chronicle Athlete of the Week, addressed her race with Chronicle sports reporter Kevin Druley. The following is an edited transcript: What was your strategy at sectionals?

For the most part, I was in third the whole time and then we got to “Reality Check,” the big hill that’s right at the end. I know one of my strengths is being able to push the hills, so I was able to reach the top group and use the

big hill to make my kick. ... That was the plan.

How did you feel about the team’s finish and progression?

I’m really proud of our team right now. It was so unreal that we got second. We were so pumped. ... We know that we’re not done yet and we have so much to prove at state, and we’re planning to do that.

What do you like about the state course?

I love that it’s flat, for the most part, and it’s quick. It’s a fast course.

How does the team pass the time on long bus rides like this one?

We’re goofing around and we bring one of those little portable speakers and we blast the music.

It’s a good time, and it’s really fun.

It’s time to give some midterm grades to the Bears’ coaching staff and front office.

As we all know, it already has been a tough few days for coach Marc Trestman, but there actually is a story here that I haven’t seen or heard anyone report yet.

Trestman is a member of the head coach’s class of 2013, and when you stack him up against his classmates, the results are disappointing at best.

Much has been made recently of the Bears choosing Trestman over Bruce Arians, but that really just scratches the surface of the decision authored by general manager Phil Emery.

Of the six new head coaches last season, only Trestman inherited a winning club in the 10-6 Bears. After a 2-14 season, the Jacksonville Jaguars tabbed Gus Bradley as their guy, and the Kansas City Chiefs went after Andy Reid after a 2-14 campaign of their own.

The Philadelphia Eagles were 4-12 in 2012, causing them to wave goodbye to Reid and bring in Chip Kelly.

Arizona had a 5-11 season in 2012, and although they were the last to fill their head coaching job, they still were able to hire the reigning NFL Coach of the Year in Arians.

Buffalo’s answer to a 6-10 season was Doug Marrone, and the Chargers followed a 7-9 season by adding Mike McCoy. In spite of being given the best team at the time, other than Bradley, Trestman has

Lower risk of diabetic nephropathy with lifestyle changes Dear Doctor K: I have diabetes.

My doctor says I’m at risk for diabetic nephropathy. What is that?

What can I do to prevent it?

Dear Reader: Diabetic nephropathy is kidney disease that is a complication of diabetes.

Your kidneys are made up of hundreds of thousands of small tubes that filter your blood and help remove waste from your body. In people with poorly controlled diabetes, these structures thicken and become scarred. Over time, the kidneys lose their ability to remove waste products from the blood.

To prevent diabetic nephropathy, you need to control your blood sugar. Diet and exercise can powerfully lower it. I’m sure you already know what you should be doing in terms of lifestyle changes, but it’s worth repeating.

Aim to: • Achieve and maintain a healthy weight.

• Exercise regularly. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise, most days of the week.

• Eat a healthy diet, which includes avoiding added sugars; minimizing refined carbohydrates like white bread and white rice; minimizing saturated fats

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff and cholesterol; limiting calories; and emphasizing vegetables, fruits, whole grains and healthy oils.

You also need to control your blood pressure. Like diabetes, high blood pressure injures the kidneys. In fact, the combination of both diabetes and high blood pressure is particularly damaging to the kidneys.

Even worse, your kidneys play a crucial role in the body’s control of blood pressure. If they are damaged further, your blood pressure can get worse. It’s a vicious cycle.

Failing to take care of your blood pressure leads to more kidney damage. That leads to higher blood pressure – and that leads to more kidney damage. You get the point. Aim to keep your blood pressure below 130/80 mmHg. Lifestyle changes to control blood pressure begin with weight loss, regular exercise and a healthy diet. In addition, cut back on salt in your diet, limit alcohol and quit smoking.

Any person who has diabetes

and high blood pressure should also take one of two types of blood pressure medications. These drugs – angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACE inhibitors) and angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) – protect against kidney damage in ways that go beyond lowering your blood pressure.

You also should avoid medications that can have harmful side effects on the kidneys. For example, ask your doctor if you should avoid nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) pain relievers such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin).

A low-protein diet, in which protein contributes 10 to 12 percent or less of total calories, also may slow or stop the progression of kidney disease.

Once the damage is done, kidney disease can’t be reversed.

But if you do develop diabetic nephropathy, good blood sugar and blood pressure control, and treatment with one of the two types of medications I mentioned, can slow its progression.

• All fruits, making sure you include plenty that are rich in vitamins A and C, such as citrus, nectarines, peaches, strawberries, cantaloupes and other melons.

That is timely because this is Guy Fawkes Night in England.

Fireworks are set off and bonfires burn an effigy of Guy Fawkes, whose gang tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament in 1605.

There were fireworks when today’s deal was played. What do you think of the auction, what should West lead against three clubs, and what is the outcome?

East’s passed-hand takeout double was aggressive but acceptable.

South was right to rebid one spade.

Then West might have passed, but one no-trump was reasonable. That should have been passed out (and defeated), but South could not resist one more bid. West’s two-spade call was imaginative, given South’s one-spade rebid. That contract would have required excellent guesswork by West; however, one can understand North’s three-club raise.

West found the best start: a low trump. South took the trick with his king and led a low spade. West carefully put up his eight, but then strangely shifted to the diamond six, instead of continuing with the club jack (not that that defeats the contract if declarer plays hearts twice through West).

Declarer won with his diamond ace and should have led a heart or ruffed a spade, but he played a diamond to dummy’s king and ruffed a diamond low. West happily overruffed and led the club jack, on which East discarded his heart four to give West count in the suit.

So, when South won and finally tried a heart, West ducked and the contract had to fail.
